Why JoJo Was the Only Right Choice for Bachelorette

$

0

You already know how we felt about the prospect of Caila as the next Bachelorette. So when Chris Harrison announced during After the Final Rose that the role would actually be filled by JoJo, we were elated, to say the least.

Ben put both Lauren B. and JoJo in a tricky spot by declaring he loved each of them. But as we knew going into the finale, he could only walk away with one woman. So his reject seemed like the perfect choice for Bachelorette. Not only does she get another shot at love after Ben broke her heart on national television (in a way that no other Bachelor has ever done), but this becomes probably the smartest move producers have ever made.

For the first hour-and-a-half of the finale, we watched Ben flip flop back and forth between the two women, until he finally just had to pick one and get this thing over with. But we felt every second of Ben’s breakup with JoJo. She poured her heart out to him, and he let her. Then, he proceeded to blindside her, even though he promised he would never do that.

So, while you were literally aching for JoJo’s heart and wishing she could find a better man than Ben to make her whole again (or something like that), ABC and the Bachelor producers were striking up an ingenious plan for her to be the next Bachelorette. Okay, so it didn’t happen at the exact moment you were watching obviously, but you catch our drift.

Having a runner-up as the lead of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette is pretty unprecedented for the franchise. But the last few episodes of Ben’s season were truly unbelievable and so captivating. Producers couldn’t have asked for a better set-up for this summer’s Bachelorette. See, on some level you can forgive Ben for saying ILY to two women and proposing to one of them since his castoff will get another chance to find Mr. Right—a journey that you’ve been invited on. You’re also extremely invested in JoJo now and desperate to find out how she’ll recover from Ben’s rejection.

Caila as the Bachelorette could in no way match up to the opportunity that is JoJo. And America is totally okay with what feels like a quick turnaround announcement because they believe JoJo was wronged and they want to see the show make that right for her. The same cannot be said for Caila, and producers surely realized that.

For those of you who have already marked your calendars for the May 23 premiere of The Bachelorette, are these words ringing all too true for you? That’s what we thought. Yet again, Bachelor nation has sucked you in, and we’ll be right there with you.

17-Year-Olds Can Now Vote in the Ohio Primaries

Important news for 17-year-old Ohio residents: You may now be eligible to vote in the primary elections! A judge ruled Friday that 17 year olds, who will be turning 18 before the presidential elections in November, are now allowed to vote in the primary elections, according to the Associated Press.

This is great news for those who are feelin' the Bern, as Sanders has been dominating the millennial vote. The ruling is especially important because Ohio is a key swing state; one that could prove to be a close race between Sanders and Clinton. Naturally, the Sanders campaign has been fighting for this ruling.

"This is a huge victory for 17-year-olds across Ohio," Brad Deutsch, an attorney for Sanders' campaign, told the AP. "Their votes for presidential nominees will now count when they vote on either Tuesday or over the weekend in early voting.

The ruling is based on the difference between the words 'elect' and 'nominate.' You must be 18 years old to vote in an election, but because a primary isn’t technically an election, the rules should be different. The primaries allow citizens to vote in order to nominate a candidate from their own party. Therefore, if you will be able to vote for president in the fall, you should also have a say in which of the candidates from your party receives the nomination.

This is definitely a victory for 17-year-olds who want a voice in their democracy.

Is Caitlyn Jenner Now Supporting Hillary Clinton?

Caitlyn Jenner has made it quite clear that she supports Republican candidates, and she's made some comments that have led people to assume she's definitely not in favor of Hillary winning the election. Considering that minorities have been scrutinized by Republican candidates, it's a bit strange that Caitlyn would support such individuals. And of all the candidates, Hillary seems like the best candidate to enact real change for women, especially those in the LGBTQ community. However, that doesn't mean that Caitlyn is completely close-minded. In fact, a recent Instagram post has everyone wondering if she has changed her mind.

#learningfrommygirls #willingtolisten

A photo posted by Caitlyn Jenner (@caitlynjenner) on

In the photo, she's joined by Candis Cayne, Zackary Drucker, and Hillary Clinton. So, is she supporting a Democratic candidate? Not necessarily. Just because Caitlyn is seen in a photo with Hillary doesn't mean that she's voting for her. But it does show that she's open to change, and hearing what Hillary has to say. Let's face it, being open to suggestions is a good place for Caitlyn (or anybody, for that matter) to start.

Bernie and Hillary Agree that Trump is ‘Literally Inciting’ Violence

Donald Trump’s rallies have been full of violence and riots recently, as the possibility that he will win the Republican nomination becomes greater and greater. Naturally, Trump has not condemned the violence, but applauded it and even excused his supporters’ actions. Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have teamed up in accusing Trump of inciting violence.

According to New York Magazine, Donald Trump offered to pay the legal fees of the man who allegedly punched a black protester at one of his rallies. “What this means is that Donald Trump is literally inciting violence with his supporters. He is saying if you go out and beat somebody up, that’s okay, I’ll pay the legal fees,” Sanders explained during a CNN town hall on Sunday night. “This is an outrage and I would hope that Mr. Trump…tells his supporters that violence is not acceptable in the American political process.”

Clinton followed Sanders’ lead with a similar statement at the town hall. “It is clear that Donald Trump is running a very cynical campaign pitting groups of Americans against one another. He is trafficking hate and fear,” Clinton said, according to CNN. “You don’t make America great by tearing down everything that made America great.”

These statements came as the two Democratic candidates were making closing statements before five more states’ primaries on Tuesday. The Democratic nomination could still go either way, making these primaries even more important.

Outside of Sanders and Clinton’s accusations, Trump had some of his own issues with the two candidates. He blamed Clinton and Sanders supporters for showing up at Trump events, accusing them of telling their voters to do so. Trump even threatened Sanders in a Tweet, telling him to be careful or “my supporters will go to your [events]!”

One of the notable riots came on Friday before a Trump rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago. According to BBC, hundreds of protestors gathered there, and fights broke out between them and the Trump supporters. Trump postponed the event, saying that the police recommended that he do so. However, a Chicago Police Department spokesman said that the force never told Trump to postpone anything, and in fact assured him that the police could keep him safe, according to CBS.

Just one day later, a man unsuccessfully tried to rush Trump while he spoke onstage in Ohio. Trump’s campaign manager has even been accused of assaulting journalist Michelle Fields, formerly of Breitbart.

Trump’s campaign of “hate and fear” is already inciting violence and hate among the crowds—imagine what would happen if he won the nomination. That doesn’t sound like “Making America great” to me.

9 Snacks You Don’t Need to Refrigerate or Cook

While some collegiettes have the luxury of living in apartment-style dorms complete with microwaves, refrigerators and full ovens, many of us are forced to make the cold trek down to the dining hall every time we want a snack, which is just the worst when it’s late or it’s too cold outside. By keeping a stash of appliance-free, non-spoiling snacks on your shelf, you can curb your hunger and keep yourself going between meals! Try keeping some of these great fridge-less treats on hand for easy, healthy snacking.

1. Dried Fruit

A busy week can leave you with rotten bananas and bruising apples that you were sure you would eat before they went bad. To ensure that you always have a fruity and sweet snack available, try keeping some dried fruit on hand!

Dried fruit won’t go bad and is just sweet enough to satisfy your dessert cravings.

However, beware of the sugarcoated look-a-likes and candied fruit that may masquerade as a healthy treat, and instead choose the natural, unsweetened and organic options. But even unsweetened dried fruit has more calories than fresh fruit, so keep your snack size portion to a handful or two. A quarter-cup serving of dried cherries has 130 calories with 32 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein. You can keep snack-sized portions in small Ziploc baggies so that you’re not tempted to keep reaching back into a big bag.

Nicole Gartside, a senior at NYU, suggests trying fruit leathers as an easy snack. Fruit leathers are a happy medium between dried fruit and gummy snacks, and Nicole says that they’re “just sweet enough to hit the spot. They come in so many different flavors and they don’t take up any room at all in your dorm!”

Stretch Island Fruit Co. makes all-natural fruit strips out of dried, pressed fruit puree (think healthy Fruit Roll-Ups!). One of these “Orchard Cherry” Fruit Strips has just 45 calories and 12 grams of carbohydrates, and it counts as half a serving of fruit.

2. Mixed Nuts

Just a handful of protein-packed nuts can keep your hunger at bay. Whether you prefer almonds, cashews, pistachios or peanuts, this snack can be perfect to keep on hand when you feel like you can’t quite make it until dinner. Raw, unsalted nuts are your best bet, but lightly salted or roasted nuts can help cure your salty-chip craving!

Nuts provide your body with essential healthy fats, but they do have a high caloric value, so be sure to limit your serving size. One quarter-cup of whole, plain almonds has 170 calories, 6 grams of carbs and 6 grams of protein. For proper portion control and a great on-the-go snack, try the 100 Calorie Packs from Blue Diamond --each pack has 3 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein. Throwing one of these mini packs in your bag in the morning can be just what you need to hold you over between classes!

Trail mix is an especially filling snack that can satisfy your salty, sweet and chocolaty cravings all in one bite. However, store-bought trail mixes are often loaded with extra salt or chocolate, so if you’d like a healthier variation, try making your own! Try out different nuts like almonds, peanuts, cashews and pistachios with your favorite dried fruit and dark chocolate bits (or skip the chocolate altogether if you have the willpower) until you find your perfect ratio. The nuts will fill you up with protein, while the fruit will give you the kick of energy you need to make it through your next class. Make a big batch and split it up into sandwich bags for portion control and perfect on-the-go snacking.

3. Granola Bars

Granola bars are the Holy Grail snacking option for collegiettes. The options are endless—whether you’re looking for something salty, nutty, fruity, sweet, crunchy or chewy, there is sure to be a brand for you.

Fruit-and-nut bars are an even healthier alternative, so check out the assortment of bars offered by KIND. The original Fruit & Nut Delight Bar has 17 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein in just 200 calories!

Not all granola bars are created equal, so look for bars with all-natural ingredients and few preservatives. Some good options are LARABARs and FiberLove bars. Because they’re pre-packaged, it’s easy to just throw a bar in your bag if you need a quick snack between classes to silence your growling stomach.

4. Popcorn

Throw away the greasy potato chips that used to be your late-night snack and grab a bag of pre-popped Skinny Pop or Boom Chicka Pop for a guilt-free snack that’s low in calories. The Original Skinny Pop Popcorn has 155 calories in a four-cup serving with 15 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein. Better yet, Skinny Pop offers 100-calorie bags for snacking on the go and easier portion control. Look for these healthy popcorn options, and you may find you like them even better than the butter-filled recipes offered by many microwavable popcorn brands!

5. Roasted Seaweed

You may not have expected to snack on seaweed, but when roasted with a little salt, this natural snack provides a great alternative to chips! These paper-thin snacks are perfect to munch on without making you feel weighed down.

The Roasted Seaweed Snacks from Trader Joe’s offer 2 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein in only 60 calories per package! Eating your greens has never tasted so good.

6. Wasabi Peas

If you’re struggling to get your daily dose of vegetables while at school, trying snacking on them during the day! Wasabi peas are perfect if you’re looking to spice up your snack routine, so try picking up a bag next time you’re at the store.

One quarter-cup serving of Trader Joe’s Wasabi Peas contains 4 grams of protein, 19 grams of carbs and 120 calories. Because these peas are wasabi-coated, be careful not to overindulge. Luckily, the peas are so spicy you probably couldn’t eat the whole bag in one sitting!

7. Healthy Crackers

Natural and organic crackers can be a great way to fill up when you need something crunchy to snack on. While cheesy and super-salty options might be appealing, choose organic, multigrain alternatives. Mary’s Gone Crackers are organic and vegan, and they don’t contain dairy, gluten or trans fats. A 13-cracker serving of the original flavor has only 140 calories, 21 grams of carbs and 3 grams of protein.

For added protein and extra flavor, top your crackers with peanut butter or almond butter. Luckily, peanut butter and almond butter are both fridge-less, so they’re perfect to keep in your room to jazz up your favorite snack. Two tablespoons of Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter have 140 calories, 7 grams of protein and 6 grams of carbohydrates.

8. Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans

For a sweet treat when the coffee shop feels too far away, try keeping dark-chocolate-covered espresso beans in your room. Sophie Dodd, a junior at Middlebury College, likes to keep couple of these espresso beans in her room for late-night studying. Just a few of these can satisfy your sweet tooth and give you the extra energy you need; each bean contains about 8 mg of caffeine.

If you don’t have a coffee machine in your room and the campus coffee shop is too far of a hike, these coffee treats are the perfect boost. Because they’re coated in chocolate, treat these beans as a dessert and only consume them in moderation—after a few of these, you won’t need that dining-hall brownie you’ve been craving all day!

9. Dry Cereal

Though milk and cereal seems to be the perfect breakfast, a few handfuls of dry cereal can also be a great midday snack. The flavor possibilities are endless, but we suggest trying Special K Original or Kashi GOLEAN cereal as your new favorite snack.

Kashi GOLEAN is high in fiber and protein if you’re looking for a filling and nutritious snack. Both cereals are low in fat, and a few handfuls are perfect to snack on throughout the day. Keeping small sandwich bags on hand is a great way to make this an on-the-go snack, so scoop a few handfuls of your favorite cereal into a Ziploc bag and keep it with you to munch on throughout the day!

Whether your campus has dropped to negative temperatures or your walk to the dining hall is just too daunting in the middle of the day, keeping non-spoiling snacks on hand ensures that you won’t be caught hungry. Try these and more healthy snack ideas from Her Campus and toss the potato chips and chocolate bars in the trash!

Two Northwestern Students Charged For Vandalizing Chapel With Racist, Homophobic Graffiti

Two freshmen at Northwestern University near Chicago have been charged with a hate crime after spray-painting racist and homophobic messages inside a campus chapel.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Anthony Morales, 19, and Matthew Kafker, 18, were charged on Saturday with felony vandalism, hate crime to a place of worship, and criminal damage to property for writing several offensive messages, as well as Donald Trump's name, on the walls, offices, and the organ of the Alice Millar Chapel last Thursday.

The graffiti included a swastika, drawings of penises, and other racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks. It was discovered early Friday morning by University Chaplain Timothy Stevens, just hours before the university was set to host an event at the chapel.

"It was just kind of like 'oh my goodness, this is really hideous,'" he told the Daily Northwestern. "My first thought was I need to report this and we need to get it removed."

Following a review of the surveillance video, Morales and Kafker were arrested on Friday afternoon with bail set to $50,000. They were released on Saturday after posting bond.

"Northwestern is committed to creating a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all of our students, faculty, and staff," said University President Morton Schapiro in a statement. "This disgusting act of hatred violates the deepest values and core commitments of our university and is an affront to us all."

The two students have also been placed on interim suspension, barring them from campus.

Ariana Grande Does a Flawless Jennifer Lawrence Impression

Ariana Grande is no stranger to epic celebrity impressions. During her visit to Saturday Night Live this weekend, she put her skills on display, tackling spot-on takes on Britney Spears, Rihanna and other pop stars. You might remember the "Dangerous Woman" singer doing something similar on Jimmy Fallon's late-night show months ago. In a Family Feud sketch, though, Ariana did an impression nobody could have predicted.

While acting as both the host and musical guest on SNL, Grande's impression of Jennifer Lawrence proved to be one of the most memorable moments of the night. Ariana shocked us all with her raspy, J. Law-esque voice and her "I'm just a regular girl" act. In one part of the sketch, she explains her Pringles addiction to Steve Harvey (Kenan Thompson): “Every day is my cheat day. You know what I mean?” To which Thompson replies, “How annoyingly relatable.” You really just have to see it for yourself to believe it.

New Survey Shows That Teens Are Not Into the Gender Binary

Teens these days are pretty much saying "Bye, Felicia" to the gender binary. No, seriously. As Broadly so elegantly puts it, Generation Z is "queer AF" and there's even a study that proves it.

According to a survey conducted by the J. Walter Thompson Innovation Group, young Americans aged 13 to 20 are a lot less rigid when it comes to gender and sexuality. When given the option to rate their sexuality between 0 and 6, 0 being totally straight and 6 being completely homosexual, over one-third of the group surveyed said they were somewhere in the middle.

In terms of gender, one-third agreed that gender does not define a person as much anymore, and only 44 percent of those surveyed claming to buy clothes specifically designed for their gender. While we're obviously still fighting the iron grip of gender stereotypes right and left, these statistics show a major change in thinking among younger people.

"We're even more confident about this for this particular survey because we see clear patterns across the different questions that show that Gen Z has a more complex and less binary approach to gender than millennials," Shephard Laughlin, the director of trendspotting at J. Walter Thompson, told Broadly.

The news doens't really come as much of a surprise when you consider how often we hear news of Jaden Smith killing the game in dresses, skirts, and other forms of clothing normally marketed toward women. The 17-year-old actor even made fashion headlines when he landed a deal with Louis Vuitton womenswear in January. With other young celebrities like Girl Meets World star Rowan Blanchard coming out and claiming that she doesn't want her sexuality to be exactly defined, this comes as a sign that gender fluidity is being pushed to the forefront and becoming more widely accepted by the general population.

Is This Swedish Tanning Spray Blackface?

After being picked up on social media and spreading to other news sources, Emmaatan, a Swedish tanning salon, is facing controversy for a spray tan product that is being called blackface, according to Cosmopolitan. In before and after photos on the company’s Instagram, users appear to have tans after using the spray that err a little too far past a sun-kissed golden glow.

Tanning is problematic in and of itself for various reasons (skin cancer risk from tanning beds, for example), but this is extreme. In response to the newfound attention on the company, Emmaatan’s latest Instagram post, apparently by the individual who started and runs the salon, states, “I love all skin types and that’s why I think [people] should be able to choose for what they feel good in, as long as you respect [people] around you.” The post also claims that the color appears dark at first but then washes off in the shower to become more golden.

On Emmaatan’s website, spray tan shades available for purchase include “Caramel,” “Chocolate,” “Onyx,” and the most astonishing of all, “Black.” While the Instagram post seems heartfelt, these shade names are seemingly impossible to reconcile.

The company and its products are being lambasted on Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and in article comments. One reads “Don’t like us, but you want to look like us...seems to be the real hate is coming from a place of envy.”

Blackface is cultural appropriation at its most extreme; it is an offensive fetishization of the black body. While some forms of cultural exchange can be complimentary of the culture that is being imitated, this is certainly not one of those cases. Hopefully Emmaatan comes out with an official statement of apology and reconsiders its practices and the message it promotes as a company some time soon.

Here's Proof That We're Getting a 'Gilmore Girls' Wedding

The long-awaited four-part Gilmore Girls revival is coming to Netflix, and fans are DYING to get some of the dirty deets to hold them over until its release.

Whether by the good graces of the Gilmore Girls gods or an extremely irresponsible prop guy, we finally have something to get excited about. On a tour of the Warner Bros. Studio, one particularly sleuthy fan used her best investigative skills to uncover perhaps the biggest spoiler of all time. A wedding!

A fixture of some kind (which could easily house a lavish centerpiece) with a hold sheet reading “Wedding” on it certainly merits a celebration. The mystery hold sheet still begs the question, who’s getting married?!? Luke and Lorelai? Rory and Jess? Rory and Logan? Or another couple entirely?

All we have to do now is sit back, wait somewhat patiently to find out and pray for dope centerpieces at our own weddings.

Court Dismisses Case Of Accused Rapist in Mattress Protest

$

Last year, you may recall stories of a female Columbia student protesting the school’s mishandling of her sexual assault case in the form of visual protest art: Emma Sulkowicz carried a dorm mattress around with her during the 2014-2015 school year, intending to do so until her alleged rapist, Paul Nungesser, was expelled or otherwise left campus. Nungesser was not found responsible by Columbia, and Sulkowicz brought the mattress with her to graduation.

Nungesser himself filed a lawsuit in April 2015 against Columbia University and an art professor at the school (Sulkowicz’s senior thesis adviser), claiming that Sulkowicz’s protest was an act of harassment. This past Friday, his case was dismissed by a federal court. This decision was because Nungesser did not claim that Sulkowicz “‘ever attempted to touch him, spoke to him, followed him, or otherwise interacted with him...[or] used his name in any of her public statements,’” according to The Huffington Post, and thus, does not provide grounds for a harassment case.

Nungesser’s lawsuit was based on a Title IX claim that the university failed to protect him in the face of the accusations and that he faced gendered harassment as a result. For Nungesser to make this claim also suggests that “‘those who commit, or are accused of committing, sexual assault are a protected class under Title IX,’” which they are not, as said by U.S. District Court Judge Gregory H. Woods.

Nungesser and his defense will reportedly continue to fight for his case in the form of new lawsuits. Meanwhile, Sulkowicz recently had her first independent show at a Los Angeles art gallery.

Sulkowicz did receive lots of support from schools across the country, but also faced enormous amounts of criticism and harassment by those individuals who did not believe her allegations of rape or her protest.

This all-too-common shaming reaction to college women bravely coming out with cases such as these only makes it harder for other victims, male and female, to come forward with their experiences and get justice. Hopefully the rejection of Nungesser’s case by the court will give assault victims some hope.

Forever 21 Released a Men's Shirt Referencing Rape

Forever 21 put out a jaw-droppingly terrible shirt for men that is guaranteed to make you shake your head. The shirt reads, “DON'T SAY MAYBE IF YOU WANT TO SAY NO.” Hm...Doesn't that sound like a guy trying to make an excuse for why he sexually assaulted someone? It’s messages like this that are feeding the confusion about consent in our culture. The "yes means yes" definition of consent can be muddled when shirts like this are on the market.

Of course, a Forever 21 representative apologized for the shirt, saying that the clothing retailer “strives to exemplify the highest ethical standards and takes feedback and product concerns very seriously," according to Refinery29.

According to the rep, Forever 21 has now removed the shirt from their website. "With regards to the T-shirt in question, upon receiving feedback from our customers, we took immediate action to have it removed from our website. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by the product," the rep said.

Forever 21 certainly isn’t the first fast fashion store to put out an offensive product. Dolce & Gabbana released a pair of "slave sandals" just a couple weeks ago, and Urban Outfitters has a loooong history of pissing people off with seemingly completely thoughtless designs. It really makes you wonder who is giving all these products the green light. For now, let’s be thankful that this shirt is no longer for sale.

Derrick Gordon to be First Openly Gay Player in March Madness

Derrick Gordon, a basketball player from Seton Hall, is set to become the first openly gay player to participate in March Madness, the Huffington Post reports.

Gordon was the first Division 1 basketball player to come out as gay in 2014, when he was a player at the University of Massachusetts. Of course, the Seton Hall team has received a lot of media attention because of this, but Gordon's not really interested in talking about his sexuality—he just wants to focus on playing the game.

This year marks the first time in 10 years that the Seton Hall Pirates will be going to the NCAA tournament. ThinkProgress reports that Gordon has been in the tournament three times, as he's transferred a couple of times during his college career—but the first two times, he had not yet come out to his teammates.

While Gordon is still currently the only out Division I player, his team has been very supportive. In a 2015 USA Today interview Gordon’s coach, Kevin Willard, praised the team for their acceptance. “For us, the fact that he’s gay is an old story," Willard said.

Clearly, Gordon is an accomplished athlete, but he should also be commended for coming out in the current athletic environment.

More People Have Watched Taylor Swift Videos Than They Have Basically Anything Else

These days, it seems like people are more addicted to their phones than anything else. Between DVR and Netflix, who needs to watch live TV anyway? Perhaps one of the reasons we're all glued to our phones (aside from group texts and Instagram) is YouTube. What begins as watching one video turns into 15, and before you know it, you've spent hours on the popular site. YouTube is also our main source for watching music videos from today's biggest artists, including Taylor Swift. The award-winning singer's videos have broken records on YouTube, but a new study found that people actually watch more TSwift videos than they do network television shows. Given the massive popularity of the cat-loving crooner, we're not surprised that people watch more of her videos than any show on TV. Let's be honest, you've probably watched the "Bad Blood" video more times than you'd like to admit.

In a study conducted by Nielsen, it was discovered that there are quite a few artists whose music vids have racked up more viewers than popular TV shows. Aside from Drake and Rihanna's impressive numbers, Taylor's videos have accumulated far over a billion viewers over the years. As of now, Taylor's most-viewed music video is the one for "Style," which has over 1.5 billion views in total. When the highly-anticipated video for "Bad Blood" was released last year, it received approximately 18 million views over the course of just one week. So there you have it—Taylor is dominating the world, and this Nielsen study further proved that. Keep on slaying, Tay.

Starbucks is Introducing a New Spring Frappuccino

Have the seasons really changed if there's no new Starbucks drink to try? After its 2010 release in Japan, the Cherry Blossom Frappuccino is making its debut in the United States to celebrate the arrival of Spring, according to Cosmopolitan.

According to Starbucks Newsroom, customers in Japan can get a new Sakura Blossom & Strawberry Latte or Frappuccino this year! Sakura means “cherry blossom” in Japanese, which fits perfectly with the flowery season that is Spring. Due to the lack of cherry blossom-flavored stuff in the U.S., the drink contains strawberries and cream, white chocolate syrup, and matcha green tea drizzle, according to Today, giving the drink a green and pink tint.

Much like the fleeting weather of Spring, this frappe is only available for a limited time, from March 15 to March 20, which marks the first official day of the new season. So, while we can only enjoy the Cherry Blossom Frappucino while it lasts (which unfortunately isn’t long), we can start to make the most of what will become our new pink flower addiction all season long!

5 Things Your Gynecologist Wishes You Knew

Going to visit the gynecologist regularly is an extremely important part of every woman’s life. It’s also understandably a little terrifying because of how personal an appointment can be. Still, that shouldn’t deter you from making an appointment, because gynecologists ultimately care about your health and will be an essential source of information regarding periods, contraception, sexuality and diseases relating to your reproductive organs. Later on in life, they will also be there to answer your questions about menopause, infertility and prenatal care.

We talked to Dr. Julie Chor, an obstetrician/gynecologist and assistant professor at the University of Chicago. She specializes in adolescent gynecology, family planning and delivering babies. Dr. Chor provided several essential things you need to know about gynecology. So what are you waiting for? Find out what your gynecologist wants you to know about everything down there.

1. Visiting the gynecologist does not equal getting a pelvic exam

A pelvic exam is pretty much exactly what you picture when you think of visiting the gynecologist. The doctor will ask you to lay back and put your feet into stirrups, and then insert a speculum into you, which is used to check the inside of the vagina and cervix. It may sound intimidating, but remember it’s not all a gynecologist does. As Dr. Chor says, “This exam can be important, but is not necessary in every encounter with a gynecologist!”

2. You should start getting pap smears once you hit 21

The pap smear is a test that is used to check for cervical cancer. Your gynecologist will again use the speculum to see the interior of your vagina and cervix, and then gently scrape the opening of the cervix to collect cells that will later be examined under a microscope. According to the National Library of Medicine, you will need to avoid having sex and using tampons or douches at least 24 hours before the test. Be sure to schedule your appointment around your period too, as bleeding might lessen the accuracy of the results.

As Dr. Chor explains, “This important [pap] test screens for abnormalities of the cervix that can progress to cervical cancer, but this testing is not started until 21 years of age. In fact, unless a woman has an abnormality on her pap smear, pap smears are only performed every 3 years between the ages of 21 and 30.” Remember, while both are common procedures, a pap smear is not the same as a pelvic exam. “Many women mistake a pelvic exam (which can include a speculum exam and/or an internal bimanual exam) with a pap smear. Not every pelvic exam includes a pap smear,” Dr. Chor says.

In addition, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that young women see a gynecologist starting between age 13 and 15 - not for internal pelvic exams but for an external examination.

3. You really should visit the gynecologist every year

It is recommended that you see a gynecologist at least once a year. “While pap smears are normally performed every three years, it is recommended to check Gonorrhea and Chlamydia yearly in this age group and to check in regarding other important reproductive health issues,” Dr. Chor says. Even if you feel completely healthy or are not sexually active, there are a ton of reproductive health issues that the gynecologist will check for. “Such issues include menstrual cycles, contraceptive needs, sexually transmitted infections, pelvic pain, the list goes on.”

You should also remember to get STI (sexually transmitted infection) screenings, which are not a part of the annual gynecological check-up. Most importantly, growing a strong relationship with your gynecologist means that you will understand and learn how to take care of your body early on.

4. Birth control can do more for you than prevent pregnancies

Although its name suggests a one-track purpose, birth control actually has a lot of uses. “There currently is a wide spectrum of birth control options out their [there] - ranging from pills to Depo-provera (aka “the shot”) to several different intrauterine devices and the contraceptive implant,” Dr. Chor says.

“While these options are most commonly used to help prevent pregnancy, they are also used to help with a host of other reproductive health issues,” Dr. Chor continues. “These other issues include irregular periods, heavy periods, menstrual cramps and acne.” Before you decide to take birth control, consult with your gynecologist to see which type of medication fits your needs the best, whether it’s through a pill, a shot, with short-term or long-term effects. If you’re a beginner to this whole birth control thing, first check out this handy guide to The Pill.

5. Get HPV-vaccinated!

HPV, or the Human Papillomavirus is a viral infection that causes genital warts or cancer in the cervix, vulva, and in other reproductive organs. There are over a hundred types of HPV, and many do not cause problems. HPV infections usually clear up without any intervention within a few months after acquisition, and about ninety percent clear within two years. A small proportion of infections with certain types of HPV can persist and progress to cancer. Since it is spread through oral, vaginal and anal intercourse, it is extremely important for women who have engaged in penetrative sex to get vaccinated. Dr. Chor says that the recommended age for receiving the vaccine is 9-26 years old, so collegiettes who haven’t received the vaccine yet should set up an appointment as soon as possible. Ideally, women should get the vaccine before they become sexually active, so the sooner the better. If you are sexually active and you have not yet taken the vaccine, it’s possible that the vaccine will be less effective because you may have been exposed to one or more types of HPV that the vaccine is designed to target.

In addition, the HPV vaccine, unlike some other vaccines you may have taken as a child, comes in a series of three doses that must be given over a course of six months. The second dose must be administered one to two months after the first does, and the third must be given six months after the first dose. There are actually two HPV vaccines that protect different types of HPV. The bivalent HPV vaccine prevents HPV 16 and HPV 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancers. Meanwhile, the quadrivalent vaccine prevents not only HPV 16 and 18, but also HPV 6 and 11, which cause 90 percent of genital warts.

Keep in mind that getting HPV vaccines does not mean you should forego cervical cancer screenings. Ultimately, it's important to consult with your gyno to see which treatments you are recommended to receive.

As you can see, gynecologists are an essential resource when it comes to understanding your body. While this article provides a snippet of the information gynecologists have for us collegiettes, it’s best to set up an appointment with your gynecologist to get the full scoop!
