9 Collegiettes Tell Us About the Best Mascara They've Ever Used

There's nothing quite like a few swipes of an amazing mascara to give us the confidence we need to take on the day. When our lashes are on point, the day just gets better. Plus, fluttery lashes are the perfect compliment to any lip color or eye makeup look, or even with no other makeup at all!

Since mascara always seems to make the list of collegiette makeup essentials, we asked nine collegiettes what their go-to formula is for ***flawless lashes.

Elizabeth Gallo, a senior at Messiah College: Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthening Mascara ($15)

"I have really long eyelashes, so this mascara goes on my lashes smoothly and never seems to run out. It also doesn't come out thick when I put it on, which saves time in the morning, especially when I am sometimes in a rush to get ready."

Felicia Beaton, a sophomore at Bunker Hill Community College: Maybelline Lash Sensational ($8.99)

"I tried this mascara on a whim, even though I usually don't like Maybelline mascaras. I ended up loving it because I don't have to use a ton of layers to make it look amazing, and I don't have to use three or four different mascaras to get the same effect."

Amanda Ragione, a senior at Pennsylvania State University and Alexandra Sakellariou, a junior at McGill University: CoverGirl Waterproof Lash Blast Volume ($8.99)

"I love it because it lasts all day, doesn't smudge, and holds even when I start to sweat on a hot summer day." - Amanda

"I've literally been using this for seven years and I've never found anything that I like better. I have blonde eyelashes and it makes my eyelashes super black, but not in an unnatural way. I rarely get clumps and it also helps make my eyelashes longer. It also succeeds at being waterproof, but it's easy to get off with decent makeup remover, and you can't beat the drugstore price." - Alexandra

Julia Krom, a junior at New York University: Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara ($16.50)

"I love Clinique mascaras because a lot of them come off with just water, so there's no need to use makeup remover. Also, I love that the curling mascara has a curved brush, so there's no need to curl your eyelashes either! It's especially good for travel because it's everything you need in one wand."

Sabrina Nelson, a sophomore at Reed College: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23)

"I love Too Faced's Better Than Sex mascara because it lengthens my lashes AND makes them look fuller. It's perfect for everyday because it's just the right amount of flirty without taking it over the top. Plus, the packaging is a super cute pink, it has a fun name, and brush is contoured so it's super easy to use."

McKenna Bulkley, a junior at University of Missouri:Tarte Lights, Camera Flashes Statement Mascara ($23) and Benefit Cosmetics "They're Real!" Mascara ($24)

"For day, I love Lights, Camera, Flashes! It's awesome—it makes my lashes look so long and soft, I'm amazed every time I put it on! For going out, you can't go wrong with Benefit's 'They're Real!' mascara. It really adds a wow factor to your lashes!"

Bailee Abell, a junior at University of California, Santa Barba: NYX Cosmetics Pin-Up Tease Boudoir Mascara ($5.99)

"NYX Pin-Up Tease is so underrated, but SO fantastic. Only a couple dollars from the drugstore and super comparable to Benefit's 'They're Real!' mascara. I love how it separates my lashes while giving me lots of length."

Courtney Klauber, a recent Rowan University graduate: L'ORÉAL Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara ($7.99)

"L'ORÉAL Voluminous Carbon Black mascara is amazing. The waterproof version doesn't budge all day and makes your eyes look big and bright. The formula is good for sensitive skin and contact wearers as well."

What's your favorite mascara? Have you tried and loved any of the mascaras mentioned here?

The 7 Struggles of Being a Sarcastic Person

$
0
0

You have the best poker face in the world. You often say things you don’t mean to be taken literally, and people just figure out what you really mean half the time. So you’re a sassy, sarcastic betch. That’s your style; it’s what you do. But the rest of the world doesn’t seem to understand the struggles you go through as a naturally sarcastic person.

1. Whenever you’re just trying to be funny, basically no one gets it.

Sarcastic jokes are an acquired taste. And somehow, no one else seems to get that. It’s a joke, people! Can’t they tell you’re kidding? Every time you try to be funny, everyone just stares back at you, wondering how to interpret the situation. Cue the crickets.

2. Sometimes you genuinely cannot help it.

You didn’t ask to be naturally sarcastic; like Lady Gaga said, you were born this way *hey.* There are some moments when you wish you could maybe lay off the sarcasm a little bit, but it is ingrained in you, and you can’t stop won’t stop.

3. People who don’t know you assume you’re a b*tch.

You can come off as a little rude at times, and you’re aware of it. But once people get to know you, they realize it’s just part of your charm. They learn to love your rugged edges. You’re seriously tired of hearing how “intimidating” you were when people first met you. Underneath your sarcastic facade is a heart of gold. Why can’t they understand?

4. You have little patience for people who don’t understand sarcasm.

Seriously, have these people never heard of sarcasm before? It can be downright frustrating constantly having to explain yourself. Sure, sometimes your sarcasm is a little more discreet than others, but when you're laying it on super thick and people still stare at you like you have a third head, you just want to stare right back. It's called sar-cas-m.

5. No one trusts what you say.

The rare moments when you actually try to be serious get lost in confusion because no one knows whether you’re being sarcastic or not. Literally everything you say is questioned. Your friends just stare at you with a raised eyebrow as you try to explain that yes, it is in fact raining outside, and you weren’t just kidding.

6. You’re basically the worst at receiving compliments.

Just like no one trusts you, you're sometimes wary of trusting others. Sarcasm is a hard language to understand, and even though you’re basically fluent in it, the occasional unexpected compliment will throw you off. Does your hair actually look nice, or was that a blatant dig at the fact that you haven’t showered today?

7. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

It is what it is, and if people can’t deal, then that’s their problem. You’ve accepted the fact that your sarcasm is a part of who you are. So maybe the rest of the world may never fully understand. That just makes you a beautiful, unique creature. If being sarcastic is wrong, we don’t want to be right!

TV Shows

1. Freaks and Geeks (Netflix)

This fantastic show stars young James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel (among others) as high school students in the early '80s. Unfortunately, it was canceled after one season, but it still has a strong cult following. Freaks and Geeks is funny, heartwarming, and relatable. What’s not to love?

2. Skins (UK) [Netflix]

Skins is a controversial show, but it is also addicting. The show features a different cast of characters every two seasons. You’ll fall in love with each group of friends, but you’ll definitely have a favorite set. Follow along as these British teens grow up, get in trouble, and fall in and out of love. You’ll be hooked after just a few episodes.

3. Angel (Netflix and Amazon Prime)

This Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff stars David Boreanaz as Angel. After leaving Sunnydale (and Buffy Summers), Angel heads to L.A. There, he teams up with characters new and old to fight evil, help out those suffering from supernatural problems, and redeem the crimes of his past. If you’re a Buffy fan, Angel is definitely worth checking out. Though the premise is similar to Buffy, Angel has a much darker feel.

4. Better Off Ted (Netflix and Amazon Prime)

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, Better Off Ted is a witty show with a great cast of characters. Though there are only two seasons, you’ll enjoy watching this satirical office comedy and laughing at all of the crazy antics. Oh, and FYI, Portia de Rossi (Arrested Development, Scandal) is one of the show’s stars.

5. Sirens (Netflix)

Another comedic show that was axed too soon, Sirens follows three EMT paramedics in Chicago. The show is funny, smart, offbeat, and sometimes crude. It’s a great choice to watch with a group of friends. You’ll love the way the characters interact, and your guy (or girl!) friends will appreciate the raunchy jokes.

Pop some popcorn and turn on your computer. With this list, you won’t be bored for a long time.

What to Expect in Your First College Relationship (& How to Make it Work)

$

0

You’re a few weeks into your freshman year of college and a certain campus cutie has caught your eye in class. But you’ve never had a college relationship, and you know it’s so different than high school. There isn’t a Sadie Hawkins dance for you to make your move, and you don’t spend a full school day in the same building with him five days a week. So, how do you start a relationship in college? How do couples make it work? What should you expect? Read on to learn how college relationships are different than high school ones.

You’ll have more to learn about each other

College is different than high school in that the people you meet won’t know a lot about your past. You probably haven’t met your new boyfriend’s parents yet and you have no idea who his friends are from home. “It was really hard for me to accept that my boyfriend had ‘another life’ at home,” says Emily from Indiana University. “I wanted to be a part of it, and eventually I was, but it was a struggle at first to hear about all these people and things I had no idea about.”

You can have sleepovers together

For most girls in high school, it probably would have been impossible to have a sleepover with her boyfriend. Now that you’re in college, you can have a sleepover with your guy as many nights as you want! There aren’t any parents around to say no and no one is checking in on you at night. “My boyfriend and I have sleepovers a few times a week,” says Jill from University of Denver. “It’s not a big deal in college, and I love being able to see him at the end of my day.”

You might have roommate tension

No matter how much your roommate likes your boyfriend, she probably doesn’t like him as much as you do (let’s hope!). The fact is, she might get annoyed if he’s over every day and night, and that’s something you have to consider. In high school, there was no one else around when your boyfriend came over. Now, remember to check with your roommate before you have your boyfriend over for an extended period of time.

You’ll have to prioritize

Like in high school, you’ll have to find a balance of spending time with your boyfriend, your friends, in outside activities, and on your schoolwork. Your friends will want to spend time with you just as much as your boyfriend does so you’ll have to find the time. School will be a demand, too – college is all about balance.

You’ll have more freedom

You make your own schedule in college, and choosing how to spend your time is completely up to you. If you want to ditch a class to spend time with your boyfriend, you probably won’t have to answer to anyone about it. If you decide to stay in one night and cuddle with your guy, that’s okay. College is all about freedom – you can spend as little or as much time with your man. “My mom used to nag me whenever I would spend a few consecutive days in a row with my high school boyfriend,” says Katrina from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “It was so annoying. Now I can do whatever I want – no one is monitoring my time!”

You might have to do your relationship long-distance

Most likely, your new boyfriend isn’t from your hometown so during school breaks and summers you’ll have to be long-distance. The two most challenging periods will be winter and summer breaks since they’re the longest. “I hate the time apart from my boyfriend during breaks,” says Rachel from the University of Missouri. “We always plan trips to see each other at least once to make the time apart more manageable.”

You’ll have to compromise

In high school, you probably had to take turns paying for dates or switch off visiting each other’s houses. And it’s the same in college – all relationships take compromise. “Me and my boyfriend try to take turns hanging out with each other’s friends since we don’t have the same friend group at school,” says Liz from the University of Missouri. “It takes some getting used to but it’s good to be there for each other.”

In order to maximize your college relationship experience, here are a few tips and tricks:

  • Be open to new experiences: there are plenty of chances to try new things and put yourself out there in college. It’ll be a great way to meet guys or bond with your new boyfriend.
  • Keep reminders of the past: have photos handy and memories to share with your new boyfriend so he can feel connected to who you were before college
  • Stay grounded: don’t let your new relationship rule your college experience. Try to make new friends and get your GPA up as high as possible.
  • Keep separate identities: There are plenty of chances in college for the two of you to spend time alone, but don’t always take them. Hang out with friends and do things separately – you’ll be closer for it in the end!
  • Make your own memories together: Do fun things that you can only do in college like tailgate all day before a huge home football game, spend an entire night together studying in the library, or play hooky from class (as long as they don’t take attendance and you can get the notes from someone later!) so that you can sleep in.

Every relationship you’ll ever have will be different than the one you had before it, regardless of whether it was in high school or in college. What you have to remember is that despite the differences, there are a few things that are important in every relationship, like trust, commitment, honesty, and compatibility. Find someone in college who shares your same values, and you won’t ever have to make a big change from high school to college. Grow and learn together – but most of all, remember to have fun, collegiettes!

Although it's sad to say goodbye to college friends for a few months, sometimes living with your 'rents isn't so bad!  Here are the many freedoms of being an (almost) adult during the best season.

1.  You can get up whenever you want.

Waking up at noon is completely acceptable.

2.  Having the whole place to yourself is awesome.

When your parents go to work, you can just build, you know, a FIRE PIT in your kitchen! (Would not suggest...)

3.  Getting the car all to yourself...

If you don't get a car on campus, now is the time to take a joy ride.

4.  You can get snuggled up and eat cheese with no judgement.

No one needs to know your REAL Friday night plans.

5.  ALL. THE. FREE. FOOD.

Eat a whole pizza when no one's watching (or better, if everyone is watching).

6.  Seeing old friends is the best.

*insert happy dance here*

7.  Enjoying your time alone...

8.  Getting a sick internship.

This might not be a realistic setting...but hey, a girl can dream.

And this is why summer is the best season. We're so not ready for school to start again...

Why This Year's Emmy Nominations Are So On Point

$

0

The 67th Emmy nominations are out, and we are not disappointed. TV is changing, and we like the direction it’s going in. Wondering why we are such big fans of this year’s Emmy noms? Hint: It’s all about diversity. Here are our five main reasons why this year’s Emmy nominations are so on point.

1. Nods toward game-changing shows

Shows like Transparent and Orange is the New Black, both of which feature transgender characters, are up for Outstanding Series (comedy and drama, respectively). Transparent has a good chance of winning, which would raise awareness and acceptance of transgender individuals.

2. Recognition for our favorite leading ladies

Feminists and girl power icons are all over this year’s nominations. Amy Schumer, Viola Davis, Amy Poehler, Uzo Aduba, and Tina Fey are among the actresses up for awards in various categories. All we can say is “Yaass!”

3. More nominations for African American actors and actresses

According to TIME, in 2014, only three out of 40 actors and actresses nominated for lead and supporting roles were black. This year, there are three black actors alone up for best actor in a comedy series, and nine out of the 40 nominees are black actors and actresses. This threefold increase is worth mentioning, even if it’s not as much change as we would like to see.

4. The possibility of “first time” winners

Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) and Taraji P. Henson (Empire) were both nominated for lead actress in a drama series. One of these two African American women could make history as the first black woman to win the Emmy in one of TV’s most competitive categories.

5. Prevalence of streaming series

Netflix and Amazon Prime are taking over. House of Cards, OITNB, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bloodline, and Transparent are each up for a number of awards. Streaming sites are here to stay, and they are upping their game with incredible original series.

While Hollywood may not yet be where we’d like it, this year’s Emmy nominations are proof that things in the television industry are changing for the better. Minorities, transgender individuals, and feminists are seeing more screen time, and it's just as important to see them gain more recognition for their work. If that’s not something to be proud of, then we don’t know what is.

The 8 Timeless Rules of Style

$

0

Fashion is ever changing. Freshman year style definitely won’t be the same three years later, and most of our high school attire is pretty obsolete at this point. However, no matter how trendy you try to be, remember that there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed! There are always those rules of fashion that just shouldn’t be broken, no matter what year it is. We talked to image consultant Brian Maynor, who gave us his timeless rules of style.

1. Mix and match trendy and classic pieces. With the pressure to keep up with all of the latest trends, many people are under the assumption that every article of clothing they wear has to be trendy, when that’s really not the case. “It’s good to have one trendy piece if your entire outfit has those classic pieces like straight-leg jeans,” Maynor says.

2. “If you have to put ‘too’ in front of it, then it’s too much,” Maynor stresses. Too baggy, too tight, too short, too long—none of these are good.

3. Chipped nails are always a no-no. Would you go to a job interview with chipped, bright red nail polish? Of course not! So why would you go anywhere else that way? Clean nails always work in your favor, while a neutral polish is always chic. You can even brush on your favorite color as long as your nails look neat and clean. Let’s leave chipped nails in the past.

4. Tousled and unclean are two totally different things.“You can tell when someone puts their hair into a quick, loose bun and when they just throw dirty hair up,” Maynor says. Even when you don’t want to look entirely put together (we all strive for that “I just rolled out of bed, but don’t I look amazing” look, right?), make sure that you don’t look undone: a loose top and boot-cut jeans are fine as long as you don’t pile on a baggy jacket over them. In that circumstance, Maynor advises to keep your jacket fitted.

5. Fresh makeup is always best. We all have those days when we wake up super late after being out all night. Instead of pulling out the makeup remover and reapplying everything, we swipe on some fresh lipstick, grab some mascara, barely wipe off our eye shadow and rush out the door. But we shouldn’t be doing that! Maynor reminds us “you can’t touch up your makeup from the night before and make it look good.” So start from scratch for your best look!

6. Dress for your body. No, that doesn’t mean piling on layers of clothes if you’re heavier, nor does it mean wearing all fitted clothes all the time just because you’re more petite. “A lot of my clients have body image issues and they think camouflaging is covering up, but big and boxy clothes make you look big and boxy,” Maynor says. Find clothes that actually fit your body type so you look fabulous and not frumpy.

7. Always strive for balance. Showing your cleavage, your legs and your stomach is always a fashion don’t. But unless it’s winter, you don’t need to be covered up from head to toe. Try and find a comfortable balance. “If you’re wearing a low neckline, drop the hemline of your skirt,” Maynor advises.

8. Prepare for the day ahead! Remember when you were in elementary school and your mom made you pick out your clothes the night before school? Go back to those days! “Would you rather take 10 minutes at night to pick something out or be fumbling around in the dark, half asleep, trying to pick out your outfit?” Maynor says.

Trends are always changing, and with the fashion-conscious society we live in, it’s hard not to keep up. But just remember that there are always those basic rules of fashion that never go out of style. Although they might be easily forgotten when we wake up too late to do our hair or forget to take off that chipped nail polish (for the second week in a row), try to keep these timeless rules of style in mind.

While you might be skeptical that the same stuff Santa gives the Naughty List can be used in your beauty routine, hear us out. Considered the new “it” beauty ingredient, charcoal has been found to effectively remove bacteria from your skin, reducing oil and acne. It’s mostly found in face masks and scrubs, but more and more beauty products have activated charcoal powder in them to help your skin and hair as well! If you’re willing to try this traditionally grimy ingredient, check out these five charcoal-rich beauty products.

1. Bioré Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser ($6.99)

This face wash is guaranteed to “free your pores” with its charcoal-infused formula. You might feel dirty washing your face with a black cleanser, but it foams white and then rinses off clear! Your skin will feel refreshed and smooth, plus it’s gentle enough to use daily.

2. Origins Clear Improvement Purifying Charcoal Body Soap ($15)

Purify your whole body with this body soap from Origins. It helps remove all the daily buildup you get on your skin, and you’ll love the fresh scent of clove and wintergreen when you use it. Its natural formula also won’t dry out your skin, but rather, leave you feeling refreshed all day.

3. Sephora Bamboo Charcoal Blotting Papers ($8)

Everyone hates that midday shine, so restore your matte look with these charcoal blotting papers. They absorb the oil on your face without leaving residue or messing up your makeup. Charcoal is also antibacterial, so using these daily can help reduce acne!

4. Garnier Clean+ Blackhead Eliminating Scrub ($7.99)

Get rid of those stubborn blackheads with this deep cleaning facial scrub. The charcoal micro beads draw out all the dirt that causes blackheads in the first place. Besides unclogging your pores, this formula also uses salicylic acid to help prevent pimples.

5. Sort Of Coal Kuro Shampoo ($21)

If you can get past the fact that this shampoo is black, you'll learn it can be really helpful if you have greasy hair. Produced in Japan, this unique shampoo helps absorb the oil in your hair, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Don’t worry, it won’t leave dark residue in your luscious locks!

Are you going to get on board with charcoal beauty products?

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Molly

$
0
0

Move over, marijuana: MDMA, sometimes called “Molly,” is having a moment. From Miley Cyrus coyly name-dropping the drug in “We Can’t Stop” to the alarming articles on blogs and news sites citing its danger, Molly has been everywhere. We talked to collegiettes across the country and Dr. Mason Gomberg, a pediatrician, about some of the things you may not know about Molly.

1. Combining Molly with other substances is extremely dangerous

Because Molly is considered a club drug, which means that people often use it at raves, concerts and clubs because of its euphoric effects, people often mix it with other drugs or alcohol. According to Gomberg, this is a potentially lethal combination.

“MDMA should not be mixed with other drugs, for most drugs are not fully pure, containing chemicals that can dangerously interact with each other,” he says. “One of the more common drugs used with MDMA is alcohol. This is a very bad combination because it often exacerbates the negative effects due to the diuretic effect of alcohol.”

A drug is diuretic when it causes you to urinate more often, sometimes causing dehydration. As you’ll read next, Molly can dehydrate you too, so combining it with a diuretic seriously jeopardizes your health.

2. It makes you super dehydrated

As Gomberg explained, mixing alcohol and Molly can make you dehydrated. Why? Taking Molly elevates your temperature, making you thirsty. Combined with alcohol, which makes you urinate more often, you’re at risk for dehydration. But even taking Molly alone increases your chance of dehydration.

On the opposite end, it can also cause you to become over-hydrated. Some Molly users will overcompensate for their thirst and high temperature by drinking a ton of water. However, drinking too much water can disturb the salt and electrolyte balance in your body, Gomberg says. Both dehydration and over-hydration can cause your body’s organs to fail, leading to harm or, in severe cases, death.

3. It’s definitely not “pure”

Molly is what some people say is the “purer” form of MDMA, Gomberg says, but the drug is far from pure. Because Molly is illegal, and therefore not regulated, what you think you’re ingesting could contain anything. Drugs are often laced with other substances, and the contents of the capsule you take can vary.

According to EcstasyData.org, an independent laboratory pill testing program, MDMA can contain everything from ibuprofen to aspirin to acetaminophen—all painkillers. Because you really have no idea what you’re taking (a capsule could be one part ecstasy, another part ibuprofen), you’re putting your body at risk because you don’t know how the drugs may interact.

4. Abusing Molly can put you at risk for mental health problems

While trying Molly once or twice will not put you at risk for long-term effects, using it regularly (several times a month or more) for several years will. “Long-term users of MDMA are more prone to depression, anxiety and memory loss,” Gomberg says. “It has also been proven that long-term use of MDMA causes brain damage by interfering with serotonin communication in the brain.” Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates your mood, sleep and appetite.

“I sometimes feel glum for a few days after [taking Molly],” Lizzie, a junior at Vassar College, says. Whether or not you already suffer from anxiety or depression, using Molly regularly can impair brain functions, causing you to feel down.

5. It’s becoming more and more popular

According to a 2010 United Nations  drug report , around 10 to 25 million people use Molly at least once a year. While there aren’t a lot of statistics about Molly use among college students, a 2002 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health noted that use of the drug increased between 1999 and 2000.

The drug is also illegal in the United States. “MDMA is illegal and considered a Schedule I drug due to the fact that it has high potential for abuse, lack of safe use and no current accepted medical use,” Gomberg says.

Then why is the drug so popular? Gomberg says Molly has become popular because of its feel-good effects and the fact that it’s relatively cheap. Molly’s increase in popularity means you’re more likely to come across it at college parties. Prevalence also can make the drug seem not as harmful, since it may appear that “everyone is doing it.” However, not everyone is, and those who are doing it are taking a huge risk.

The bottom line

MDMA can be fun, but the negative side effects are plentiful and dangerous. “The negatives of MDMA outweigh all the positives. It is not worth it. Your brain is precious—do not damage such a precious part of your body,” Gomberg says.

“College is the best time of your life and it is a time to explore and learn,” he says—not a time to damage your brain and body.

You LOVE makeup. From splurging at Sephora to writing your beauty blog, you consider yourself a straight-up pro. But that doesn't mean there haven't been some struggles along the way. Here are the 14 thoughts we have when putting on makeup.

1. I’m totally going to try out that fun eye makeup tutorial I watched last night.

They make it look so easy!

2. Or should I opt for a more natural look?

3. I’ll just go heavy on the liner and skip the eyeshadow all together.

4. Okay, primer is applied and it's time to nail the winged liner.

5. UGH, I messed it up.

6. Why do I always make this face when I’m applying mascara?

Does everyone do this, or is it just me?

7. Should I use foundation or tinted moisturizer today?

Bad acne day calls for foundation.

8. Now time to cover up that massive pimple, aka the planet growing on my face.

Thank goodness for concealer.

9. Setting powder calls for sheer and even coverage.

10. Should I try contouring this morning?

LOL. Nah.

11. Should I go for a pink or a red lip?

If I use red, it will probably end up all over my teeth...again.

12. I’m going to try over-lining my lips a little.

I really just want to achieve the Kylie Jenner look.

13. I totally nailed my look today! This calls for a selfie, or two or three.

14. Bow down because my look is ***flawless today.

Makeup on fleek.

The 17 Scariest Moments of a Girl's Life

$

Sometimes the scariest moments in a girl's life aren't the ones that happen while she's watching a horror film, they're the ones that happen when she's least expecting it. Just reliving some of these may be enough to send you into an adrenaline-filled Nutella binge, so beware!

1. The moment you look in a mirror and realize you've had something stuck in your teeth since breakfast.

And you wonder if your friends really care about you at all if they let you walk around this way.

2. Sending a text to the wrong person.

Nothing is scarier than realizing you sent a message that says, "I hate Karen so much" to Karen.

3. Dropping your phone into a pedicure bath.

And your life flashes before your eyes.

4. Sending a booty-call text to your mother.

Not a chance she'll let this one go.

5. Hearing a knock on the door right after you've already taken your bra off for the day.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

6. Remembering that you're wearing Spanx mid-hook-up.

There is no sexy way to remove Spanx.

7. The moment right before you fall over in heels and stumble ungracefully while trying to find your balance.

You can try all you want, but chances are, you're going down.

8. Waking up from a particularly long nap and forgetting where you are and what time it is.

It's even scarier if you wake up and think that you slept through the night.

9. Running into an awkward hook-up on campus.

And you avoid each other like the plague.

10. Being called on in class while you were on Tinder.

Now they all know what you're up to.

11. Forgetting the address on your fake ID.

And now you'll have to wait outside for your friends.

12. Reading your texts from last night.

Simultaneously informational and incredibly terrifying.

13. Or having your friends recount your actions.

And they will laugh at you instead of with you.

14. Realizing that you have an assignment due at midnight... at 11:45 p.m.

And you quickly have to come to terms with the fact that your grade is going down the toilet.

15. The moment you lose your internet connection while taking an online exam.

Cue the crying and frantically emailing your professor.

16. Meeting someone for the first time and revealing something you could have only known from stalking him or her on Facebook.

Oh, you're a competitive water-skiing champ, right?

17. Being asked what you're doing after college.

Why do people think it's okay to ask this?

Pretty horrifying, right?

It's been 20 years since Clueless debuted in theaters, and we're STILL referencing the iconic film. Can you blame us though? Who could forget the classy and chic outfits worn by style icon Cher Horowitz? It may be 2015, but those plaid skirts and knee highs are still super cute—just ask Iggy Azalea.

In a book fittingly titled As If!, journalist Jen Chaney shares the inside scoop on the cult classic. Compiled from interviews with the cast and crew, fun facts, film stats, and other fun details, this book is the perfect read for any fan of Clueless. Although many of the movie's fans adore Cher's iconic outfit choices, Alicia Silverstone admits to having a different attitude. In fact, Silverstone confesses that she got rid of her costumes. We know what you're probably thinking right now:

How could she possibly abandon the iconic wardrobe and character that kickstarted her Hollywood career?!? It seems a bit harsh, if you ask us. While Alicia initially kept her stylish ensembles once film production wrapped, she ultimately decided to part ways with her cute sweaters and preppy skirts. “I didn’t do a very good job at saving any of them. I was stupid about that whole thing. I think I gave them all away,” Alicia admits in Chaney's Clueless tell-all.

R.I.P Cher Horowitz's wardrobe, you will be greatly missed by fans. Please excuse us while we rewatch Clueless on Netflix, and engage in a little retail therapy at the mall.

July 19 is National Ice Cream Day and what better way is there to celebrate than by wearing items that pay homage to our favorite frosty treat? From earrings to socks to rain jackets, we’ve rounded up 11 items that will put our love affair on full display.

1. Carry it with you

This bag from Modcloth ($39.99) looks good enough to eat.

2. For the girl on a budget

NYLON knows we can’t afford professional help, but we’re happy to settle for this sweatshirt ($45) and Drs. Ben & Jerry.

3. When the sun's out, bring the cones out

We’re not even worried that these cone-adorned sunnies from Nasty Gal ($31.50) might impair our vision.

4. Sleep together

Eating ice cream in bed is nothing to be ashamed of. We all do it, as Forever 21’s nightgown ($14.90) clearly sympathizes with.

5. Erase your rainy day blues

We like ice cream no matter the weather, but this ASOS trench ($45) will definitely make rainy days more fun.

6. Keep a private stash

This girly bralette from ModCloth ($29.99) may remain unseen by mostly everyone else, but at least it’ll be close to your heart.

7. Romp around

One thing we’re sure of—we’ll never outgrow our love of ice cream or rompers. This one from ASOS ($36) should help make that promise last.

We don’t blame you for supposedly hearing the ice cream jingle even when there’s not a truck in sight. These Nasty Gal earrings ($14) may be a bit distracting.

Which of these items would you wear to show off your love of ice cream, collegiettes?

How to Modernize These 5 Iconic Looks From 'Clueless'

Clueless is celebrating its 20-year anniversary on July 19, which is making us feel both super old and incredibly nostalgic. Cher Horowitz was arguably our first style icon, and we distinctly remember begging for some tartan as soon as we watched this cinema classic. While Cher's style epitomized our childhood outfit goals, we still find ourselves craving to channel her inherent class (and sass). That's why we've compiled a list of modern takes on some of Cher's to-die-for looks—take a look for the perfect inspo to flaunt your fashion sense like a true Beverly Hills Babe.

Full Tartan

Cher Look #1

Capulet plaid jacket
wildfang.com

Polo Ralph Lauren green skirt
$120 - houseoffraser.co.uk

Frye chelsea boots
amazon.com

Thought rocking full-on plaid was a thing of the past? Think again! As long as your pieces are sleek and paired with a neutral top underneath, there's nothing that says you can't match a plaid blazer and plaid mini skirt and still look incredibly chic. Pair a red and green tartan pattern with some modern Chelsea boots for a fall outfit that's the look of every prep school girl's dreams.

Pretty in Prep

Cher #2

J Crew blue cardigan
$105 - jcrew.com

Lands End plaid skirt
landsend.com

Keds sneaker
keds.com

A-line skirts, soft, lightweight cardigans, and adorable white sneakers? As far as we're concerned, these closet staples never left. Rock them with ease to look darlingly classic and well put-together.

Sporty Chic

Cher #3

Crop top
$11 - newlook.com

Superga slip on shoes
$195 - farfetch.com

Cher's black, pleated shorts are coincidentally one of the newest returning trends to the fashion scene. Everyone's fawning over sports-inspired looks these days, which means making a few small edits to Cher's ensemble (like replacing the white-on-white cardigan and top with an athletic-accented white sweater) will create an outfit that's the definition of posh. Pampering your feet with black, calf-hair slip-ons is a must-have, and don't abandon the scrunchie—it's seriously adorable!

Wild and Western

Cher Outfit #4

Madewell denim tank
madewell.com

We won't deny that this suede-and-denim look was one of Cher's riskier choices, which is exactly why pulling it off today will earn you even bigger brownie points in the eyes of your fashion-obsessed friends. Turns out suede button-up miniskirts are in again, and a variety of denims have been making their way into our closets for as long as we can remember. For a modern take on this wild outfit, keep the skirt the same but switch Cher's top for a chambray tank—it's less bulky and more sleek. Instead of tan, knee-high socks, wear trending tall fringe boots to complete the outfit. The final look will make onlookers swoon.

Sheer and Sultry

Cher Outfit #5

Silence Noise long sleeve tee
urbanoutfitters.com

Acne Studios black jeans
bagheeraboutique.com

Sole Society short boots
solesociety.com

Excuse us while we're overtaken with style envy. Cher's mesh night-out ensemble is something we'd wear in a heartbeat, and there's really nothing we would change about this sexy look. Grab a mesh long-sleeve top, an incredibly edgy strappy bralette, some high-waisted black skinny jeans, and black booties to finish. Cher's jewelry is also on-point, so pick up a long, drapey chain necklace with delicate pendants to top it all off.

Think Cher's style is outdated? As if! These outfits definitely prove otherwise!

9 Signs You’re in a “Better-Than-Nothing” Relationship

$

Chances are, even if the words have never left your mouth, at some point in your life you’ve probably found yourself thinking about a relationship, “Well, it’s better than nothing.” And if these words have crossed your mind about your current relationship, it’s time to listen up and make a change.

Dating coach Mary Gorham Malia refers to this concept as “Better-Than-Nothing” (BTN) relationships. These BTNs are exactly what they sound like—situations where collegiettes fall into dull, incompatible or second-rate matches just because they feel that any relationship is better than no relationship at all.

Sound familiar? Read our nine signs your relationship might be a BTN to figure out if it’s time to move onto a match you really deserve.

Sign #1: You Have to Remind Yourself Why You’re Still in the Relationship

In a BTN relationship, you might find yourself coming up with reasons to stay with your partner that have to do with everything but your partner themself.

“In your head it’s, ‘It’s better than being alone,’” Malia says. “‘It’s better than being lonely. It’s better than having no one to hang out with on the weekends. It’s better than going to dance by myself.’ But it’s not a relationship where you go, ‘This is just so great. This person is so amazing. I am so lucky to have them in my life.’ They’re really different kinds of relationships.”

The perks that you consider don’t have to be emotional. Your partner could have a nice car, provide regular physical gratification or even be a great study partner. Or, in the case of Iris*, a Northwestern University senior, he could simply be conveniently located.

“I lived in a dorm that was three-fourths of a mile away from anything useful on campus. He lived in a dorm that was a lot more centralized,” she says of her freshman year BTN boyfriend. “Ergo, a convenient place to sleep.”

Sign #2: You Don’t Imagine Your Breakup as Hard… But You Don’t Embrace Being Single

A lot of the time with BTNs, there might be a sense of ambivalence that you find yourself ignoring. Sure, you can like your partner well enough, but take the time to imagine the two of you breaking up. Is the thought hard to swallow… or can you easily picture yourself moving on? If it’s the latter, it might be time to do just that.

Kelsey Mulvey, a Boston University senior and HC’s How She Got There editor, says her high school boyfriend was textbook BTN.

“We were good friends, but he simply wasn't the type of guy for me. Since we were good friends and I never had a boyfriend before, I decided to give it a chance,” she says. “Since we were such good friends and I was comfortable in the relationship, I was afraid that the alternative was being alone.”

If you often find yourself gravitating toward relationships and are uncomfortable with being alone, it might be telling of why you’re in your current relationship in the first place. And what might that reason be? You guessed it––because it feels like it’s better than nothing.

Sign #3: You Ignore Things That Would Normally Bother You

We’re not saying that every little issue should be cause for a breakup, but do you find yourself ignoring the big stuff? Are you completely bored when you’re together? Do you have nothing in common? Do you fight too much? Silencing your thoughts about why you should ditch your relationship might help you deny its BTN status, but it won’t make the relationship any better.

Kate*, a 24-year-old professional, struggled for more than two years with her BTN boyfriend in college, whose family often interfered with their relationship.

“We fought at least once a week about his demanding, crazy sister and his mom, who was even worse,” she says. “[I thought], ‘I can impress his mom eventually. She’ll see.’ I was in total denial.”

Only you can determine good reasons to ditch a deadbeat relationship, but “putting up with it is better than being alone” should never be one of them.

Sign #4: Time Away From Each Other is too Easy

We don’t advocate co-dependent relationships where every moment apart is unbearable, but never missing your partner isn’t a good sign! If you find your time away comes with no great emotional strain––or worse, you find it refreshing and preferable––you’re lacking a sense of attachment that you’d feel if you really cared about your partner.

More than that, time away from your partner can be telling of which path you should pursue, both in ending things and what you do after your relationship.

“I went home for the summer and rediscovered how great it was to be myself outside of the context of relationship,” says Iris. “That provided me with the clarity I needed and sort of set the ball rolling for our breakup at the end of the summer.”

Sign #5: You Worry About Losing His Friends More Than Losing Him

If you’ve built a relationship with a person, it’s completely natural to worry about the things that would change if you broke up. Whether you share a group of friends, an extracurricular activity or just a nice routine together, it can be hard to imagine how things would be disrupted after a breakup.

“We had the same friend group, which as a freshman [was] invaluable,” says Iris. “Breaking up with him [meant] putting my entire social foundation in jeopardy.”

Pay attention to these worries. If these outside circumstances are the only things tying you to your relationship, it’s time to cut loose. Those reasons alone aren’t enough to keep you in a relationship you’re otherwise not invested in.

Sign #6: You Can’t Remember How or Why Your Relationship Began

Ever found yourself in a relationship before you made the actual decision to do so? On a college campus where relationships often grow out of hook-ups or other uncertain circumstances, stumbling into a relationship like this can lead to BTN territory.

This happened to Iris, who found herself in a relationship around Christmas her freshman year after about a month of hooking up.

“Because college time is weird, it didn't feel like we were moving too fast,” she says. “But in retrospect, if we had known each other even a little bit longer, it probably wouldn't have happened.”

The same might be the case for you: if you let yourself be swept into a relationship without much enthusiasm, it might be time to enthusiastically get yourself out of it instead.

Sign #7: You Always Feel Guilty

So far we’ve been talking about you, but what about him? Remember: You both deserve more than a BTN. If you have a sense of guilt or discomfort you can’t place about your relationship, ask yourself if you might be feeling bad for leading him on. Is it obvious that there’s an imbalance of feelings and that you’re a lot less invested than he is? Everyone deserves to be with someone who cares for them and values them, so don’t let your BTN be a placeholder until something better comes along. The earlier you end it, the better. It will save him the heartache and you the trouble of a nasty breakup.

“He cried; I didn’t,” says Iris of her breakup with her BTN. “He said I was the person that he saw himself being with through all of college, maybe even beyond. And it wasn't until then that I fully realized how much more he was invested in things between us. I felt bad for hurting his feelings, but worse that I hadn't ended things earlier, because I think it would have saved him a lot of heartbreak. Clearly he was under the impression that things were more serious than I ever intended them to be.”

Sign #8: Talking About the Future Makes You Uncomfortable

Do you cringe every time your partner tries to make future plans with you? Whether it’s discussing meeting the parents, post-grad arrangements or something as simple as going to your sorority formal a month from now, finding yourself constantly wanting to change the subject is a red flag.

You might have thought that you were just a commitment-phobe, but if talking about the future makes you uneasy, it might just be the thought of the future with him. If you don’t want to talk about it, it might be time to ask yourself: is it because you don’t see this particular relationship having much of a place in your future?

If the answer is yes, make sure you speak up. Not being ready to talk about the future isn’t necessarily a huge problem, but not being upfront about it is, especially if your partner is on a different page.

“Feel free to keep it casual, but make sure you’re communicating with each other and that you’re really setting those expectations,” says Malia.

Sign #9: Before Reading This List, You Suspected it Would Apply to You

Chances are, if you’re in a BTN, you already know it and just haven’t done anything about it yet. Malia doesn’t call them BTNs for nothing––many collegiettes stay in them because they’ve successfully convinced themselves that the relationships are better than nothing. But women who keep themselves tied down in BTNs are denying themselves the satisfaction of finding someone who is not only better than nothing, but better than plenty of other things as well.

The bottom line? You’re better than a Better-Than-Nothing relationship, so don’t be afraid to make the leap toward experiencing something actually worthwhile, whether that means a relationship you're genuinely invested in or just having fun being single.

“If you stay with a BTN, that makes you unavailable when the right person shows up, and that’s one of the lessons that I’m trying to teach women,” says Malia. “Yeah, okay, date. Have fun. But don’t think that means having to settle.”

Her Story: I Catfished A Guy (& We Fell In Love)

$
0
0

Like many people, on Wednesday nights I eagerly turned on MTV to watch Catfish. But unlike most, I have actually been in a similar situation. When watching the show, I’ve felt bad for some of the people doing the Catfish—I know how upset and self-conscious you have to be to create a fake profile on social media. I know this because I Catfished someone.

During the beginning of my freshman year, I was not into underage drinking or hooking up like my friends were, and grew apart from many of these people because of the differences in our social lives. I was lonely, and I had issues with my self-confidence. At the time, many of my schoolmates were dating, and I couldn’t get a single guy to look at me. I hit the point where I didn’t want to be myself; I wanted to be someone, anyone else—so I created a fake MySpace profile using pictures from a girl I had seen on YouTube. I used my real name and my real city in the biography, but I added a couple years to my age.

I spent an entire day making albums for “me” and setting up an entire profile with the fake pictures. I added my real MySpace account as a friend on this new one, and when I logged out, I had one friend. The next day I woke up with over 50 friend requests, from both guys and girls around my fake age and in my city. I added them back and continued to receive requests and messages just to chat. I started messaging back and forth, getting to know these people. I created friendships and inside jokes with so many new “friends.” I had so much fun sharing my deepest, darkest secrets and thoughts. No one judged me. I could be the person I was on the inside with these people because they didn’t care.

One day when I logged in, I had received a friend request from a guy named Gary. He was around 19 years old and was super cute, with these amazing hazel and green eyes. I added him, and we messaged back and forth for quite a while.  He was the best person I’ve ever talked to. He was so smart and funny, calling me sweet names and complimenting me. We exchanged phone numbers a few weeks after talking and started to text, but since I only had 250 texts a month, we started having nightly phone calls.

We would talk every single night about random things, like wanting to have big families, his job at Best Buy, or my school. As we started getting closer and closer, I stopped messaging other people on my MySpace page—I only wanted to talk to Gary. He told me he really liked me and wanted to hang out with me. That was when I knew I was in too deep. We only lived about 20 minutes away from each other, but he didn’t really know who I was. He couldn’t meet the girl in the pictures, and I was sure he didn’t want the real me. I lied to him and told him I was going to school in California and moving away in a few weeks. He was hurt, but he thought that we could still meet one day.

We continued to have our deep conversations over the phone every night, and then, after weeks of these nightly phone calls, we began to call each other in the morning, too. It got to the point where I was falling asleep on the phone around 12:00 a.m. and then waking up at 5:00 a.m. to call him before I went to school. After a few months of talking on the phone every single day, he told me that he was in love with me, and he trusted me so much he wanted to tell me about his ex-girlfriend. Gary told me his last girlfriend had lied to him and told him she was 17. After they had dated for a while, he found out she was really 15. He was extremely upset because he had been so honest with her while she had been deceiving him throughout their relationship. This made me feel extremely guilty—I was doing the same exact thing his ex had done. I was dishonest to Gary during our entire “relationship.” The part that hurt me the most was that I knew I had to end it, and the only way I knew how to do it was to stop talking to him. This was very hard for me because I was honestly and truly in love with Gary.

I deleted the fake MySpace page and left him a voicemail telling him I couldn’t continue our relationship anymore because I hadn’t been honest with him. I didn’t tell him I had used fake pictures. He left me voicemails and texts asking me why and what he had done. I tried to avoid these pleadings, but eventually had to answer him and beg him to stop calling. It didn’t work, so I told my parents I was receiving unwanted calls, and they had my number changed. That was the last time I had any contact with Gary.

Five years later, I still think about Gary every single day. I had never felt so much remorse before, nor have I since. It’s not an excuse, but at the time I didn’t understand what I was doing to him. I know now how wrong I was. I played with his feelings and I treated him so badly. Although we have never met, I believe Gary was my first love. I want to apologize, but I’m afraid of the repercussions. I know there are ways for me to contact him—I still remember his last name—but I do not know if I could ever do it.

I plan on going away to college and putting this all behind me. I’ve never told anyone this story and now that I have gotten it out, I feel like I can move on.

I’m not sure if it is hypocritical of me, but this situation has made me very wary about trusting others, especially on the Internet. I find myself more reserved around strangers and it has become very difficult to be confident. This situation has changed me, and I know I’ll never do anything similar again.

17 Thoughts We Have While Looking Through Old Facebook Photos

Maybe you want to reminisce on the "glory days." Maybe you're trying to find an old picture. Maybe you're just really bored. But regardless, you have decided to look through your old Facebook photos and slowly realize the old days were the farthest thing from gloryful and despite how cool you thought your color-coordinated braces were they most definitely were not. Here are 17 thoughts every girl has while looking through old FB photos.

1. Aw, look how skinny I was…

Guess it’s true you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.

2. Ew, look how skinny I was! If I turned sideways, you might’ve lost me.

3. How in the world did I think that outfit was even remotely acceptable?!

4. No really, was I blind, or was there something in the Kool-Aid?

5. I was a walking Hollister advertisement.

An unfortunate looking, might-be-mistaken-for-a -wig, possibly-making-them-negative-profit advertisement.

6. Who invented the duck face?

7. Like honestly, who said you know what the most sexy animal to impersonate would be? A duck!

8. And why did we all go along with it?
