5 Ways To Upgrade Your Time Management Skills From High School To College

$

The independence that comes with college life can be exhilarating and liberating—but it also comes with responsibility, collegiette. Having class for only four hours a day sounds awesome, but it doesn’t mean that you should surf YouTube and online shop your days away. Managing your time wisely is what can make or break your first year of college, so it’s important to have some idea of how you’ll handle all your glorious free time. Her Campus is here to help you with that by taking common high school activities and translating them to college life, so you won’t fall victim to procrastination or get lost in a mountain of unread notes during dreaded midterm week.

During high school you… had sports practice right after school.

In college you should… go to the gym right after class.

Why: Depending on where your classes, dorm, and fitness center are located, sometimes scheduling workouts can be more difficult than you realize. Factor in a shower afterwards with time to make it to your next class or social event and it’s enough to make a collegiette blow off the whole thing. So in order to avoid wasting a good workout day watching Bachelorette reruns, figure out at the beginning of each week how many times you want to work out and when it would be most convenient to go. Write it down in your planner or put a reminder on your phone, so you remember to bring your workout gear with you that day. And once you decide to go, follow through! You wouldn’t blow off high school soccer practice, would you?

During high school you… had a study hall period every day.

In college you should… treat your breaks in between class like study periods.

Why: You may have an hour or two break before your next class, and a nap sounds oh so tempting. But just say no, collegiette! Instead of sleeping or goofing off in between class, bring homework or books with you and find somewhere to study. You don’t have to go all the way back to your dorm; it could be at the library, the student center, or a local coffee shop. Giving yourself time to catch up on schoolwork during the day also frees up your nights, leaving you more time to catch up on your beauty rest and relax.

During high school you… woke up the same time, five days a week.

In college you should… wake up the same time, five days a week.

Why: Adjusting to a sleeping schedule in college can be hard—sometimes your neighbors are loud or your roommates keep you up at night. Not to mention pulling all-nighters and college feeling like one huge slumber party. By going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day during the week you’ll get the right amount of sleep each night and your body will feel more rested. So even if class doesn’t start at the same time every day, try to get yourself on a consistent sleep schedule – it does wonders in the long run. Check out what happens if you don’t get enough sleep in college and you’ll be scheduling a bedtime every night!

During high school you… did your hair and makeup every morning before class.

In college you should… embrace your natural beauty.

It sounds cheesy, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true! Don’t let me stop you from rocking a great outfit and killer hair to class, but depending on the feel of the campus, chances are most students go for a more casual look during the week. So wear what you feel most comfortable in—whether it’s skinny jeans and a fierce top or a hoodie and leggings, as long as you still look somewhat pulled-together. You can pick certain days of the week when you want to dress up for class or other commitments, and on off days wear a more relaxed outfit.

During high school you… had homework assignments to complete at night on a regular basis.

In college you should… devote an hour each night to reviewing notes from class that day, doing the reading, or getting started on future assignments.

Depending on the class, sometimes your entire grade is based on three tests for the entire semester (or even fewer!). No homework or extra credit to fall back on. In order to ensure that you kick butt in your classes you should go over what was taught that day, so instead of learning and then forgetting you’ll be committing it to memory. These ten study tips to get you back in school mode will get you on the right track. Yes, boring we know. But you’ll thank us when test time comes and everyone’s cramming to learn a month of material and you’ve been studying it for a few hours each week already.

14 Signs You've Been Friends With Someone for Way Too Long

Sure, we may say that we have a bunch of best friends, but really, we all have that one friend who has been there for it all. At this point, getting rid of her would be a scary thought. Not just because you love her, but because she's seen you go through your awkward stage, which, let's face it, is enough to keep you friends forever.

1. She laughs at all of your jokes.

You can always count on her to make you look like the comedic genius you know you are.

2. Her parents treat you like a dysfunctional adopted child whom they aren't afraid to set straight.

Your best friend gets in trouble and you get in trouble for letting her get into trouble.

3. Your arguments never last long, because neither of you can go very long without talking to the other.

"Wait, what were we even fighting about?"

4. You've compared yourselves to famous BFFs, and you know exactly who is who.

Bonus points if you know which one of you is Cory and which is Shawn.

5. You have a language of your own.

One side-eye is all it takes with you two.

6. You know that those ugly Snapchats are a sign of affection.

And you trust her to screenshot only the really funny ones.

7. You're not afraid to steal food off of her plate.

Just make sure you leave a little bit for her.

8. You've shared a bed more times than you can count.

There is nothing like a good, old-fashioned sleepover.

9. You Facebook stalk every person she talks about.

And you take each other's opinions very seriously.

10. She tells you how it is.

You aren't afraid of talking about the things that bother you, because you both know that it will only make you closer.

11. She hates the people you hate.

And even if she doesn't have any real reason to, she'll hate them on principle.

12. She isn't afraid to poke fun at you, especially about that ninth-grade boyfriend who ended up a convicted felon... but you know that she does it because she loves you.

But if anyone else makes fun of you, it's on. Because...

13. She always has your back.

Even when she knows you're wrong or overreacting.

14. You might end up at different schools in different states with different people, but you know that the second you reunite, you'll fall right back into your routine of Nutella and Netflix.

You both know your friendship is one that will stand the test of time.

Here's to many more years of doing stupid things together and laughing about it as hard as you can!

We love the way a good pair of heels can make our legs look killer, but when it comes to comfort, they’re not always our first choice. When you want to add some height but still be comfy enough to rock your shoes all day, what’s a girl to do? Luckily, this season offers plenty of platforms, block heels and wedges galore, all of which keep you as comfy as your favorite Birkenstocks and as confident as your go-to stilettos.

Read on to shop our picks!

1. Block heels ($31.28 at Glamorous)

Block heels have the same glammed-up vibe of a pair of spiky stilettos, but their similarities end there—the chunky block shape adds stability and comfort, making you way less likely to be limping around by the end of the day.

2. Chunky platform sandals ($100 at River Island)

It turns out this summer’s most major shoe trend, the '70s revival wooden soled platform, is actually one of the comfiest too! The platform adds height, but tricks your feet into feeling like you’re wearing a much lower heel.

3. Flatform sandals ($32.90 at Forever 21)

Flatforms are the best of both worlds—extra height and a shoe that feels like your comfiest pair of flat sandals. Not to mention their on-point '90s nostalgia vibes!

4. Platform ankle booties ($35.50 at ASOS)

For an extra height boost, try switching out your go-to pair of flat ankle booties for a pair of equally comfy platform kicks! The grey suede on this pair goes with everything.

5. Platform brogues ($119 at Zara)

There isn’t a fashion girl on earth who isn’t lusting after those infamous Stella McCartney flatform brogues – this metallic Zara lookalike is the next best thing.

6. Statement wedges ($53.99, Charlotte Russe)

Meet your new going out shoe—these graphic black and white wedges are perfect for that edgy cool-girl look for a night out, but the wedge shape will have you dancing all night long.

What are your favorite comfy-but-cute footwear picks, collegiettes?

7 Tech Necessities You Need To Rock This School Year

Between our laptops, phones, tablets and e-readers, it’s safe to say that we love our technology. Can you blame us? It makes life so much easier to have the Internet at our fingertips, plus we can do things so much faster (like Facebook stalking…er…we mean writing papers…) To make sure you’re plugged into the newest technology trends, here are seven of the best tech accessories to rock this school year.

1. A phone charging case

You know that sinking feeling when your phone reaches three percent and there’s no charger in sight. Well this year, you’ll never have worry about your phone dying in the middle of the day with this super stylish phone charging case ($99, Office Depot)! It’s lightweight, protects your phone and holds 100% charge right when you need it.  Talk about a lifesaver.

2. A sleek laptop

Perfect for when you’re stuck in the library, this durable laptop will be your ideal study companion. With its thin design, it’s easy to take anywhere you go and its 500GB of memory will help you store all your assignments, music and photos. While it’s not the  cheapest thing on this list at $329.99 (Office Depot), a laptop will always be a good investment.

3. A laptop case

Now that you have your super cool laptop, you need an equally awesome case to carry it in! We’re obsessed with this preppy case from Herschel ($39.99). Not only is it adorable, it’s also double-lined with fleece so your laptop will always be protected. Plus, it comes in a variety of color combinations to match your personal style!

4. A single-serve coffee machine

If you’re not a coffee lover already, college will make you one. As much as we crave our Starbucks lattes, our caffeine habits have the potential to break our banks fast. Although this Keurig brewing system comes in at $99.99 (Keurig), investing in one will help you from going (completely) broke! Keep it classic with the silver finish or pick a pop of color with Faded Rose or Emerald.

5. Wireless headphones

Whether you’re hitting the gym or studying in the library, you can’t go wrong with a solid pair of headphones. Now you can go cord-free with these wireless headphones ($99, Office Depot), complete with volume, play/pause and skip controls. They also last for five hours so you can rock out no matter where you are on campus!

6. Bluetooth speakers

On a similar music note (pun intended), bring the party wherever you go with this cute portable speaker from Walmart ($19.50). Available in four different colors (check out that hot pink!), this speaker is tiny but powerful. It can connect to any device that has Bluetooth and lasts up to six hours. Anyone else feeling a dance party coming on?

7. A trendy Fitbit

Sometimes finding the motivation to work out can be tough. But with a Fitbit, it’s easy to keep track of your fitness goals, plus you can put it in stylish accessories to compliment your outfit! We absolutely love this edgy bracelet ($78, Bezels & Bytes) that perfectly holds any Fitbit flex tracker inside. You do have to buy the Fitbit separately ($99.95), but pairing fitness and style is always a win-win to us!

Whether you need a new laptop or want to keep track of your fitness goals, we’ve got you covered. This is your year to become tech savvy with these trendy, cutting edge accessories!

You Need These New Chip Flavors in Your Life

For the second year in a row, Lay’s has created the “Do Us A Flavor” challenge. This competition asked participants from all over the country to submit what they think should be Lay’s newest, and greatest, flavor. They first selected a base chip: wavy, kettle cooked, thin, etc. Next, they were allowed three flavors to put on the chip, and contestants finished up their application by stating which city this flavor represented and why. The creator of the winning flavor has the chance to win one million dollars!

After testing and creating submissions, Lay’s finally released their top four flavors—without telling anyone what they were. They shipped all four flavors to various media outlets, such as Cosmopolitan and Delish, who were asked to guess what the flavors were and write an article on their findings. Lay’s even stepped it up this year with marketing by installing vending machines in Los Angeles that held the four mystery flavors, encouraging the public to chime in on the delicious guessing game. They had some pretty interesting guesses, too: Barbie hair, thanksgiving stuffing, and California roll were all common flavor interpretations.

Finally, Lay’s has released the four finalists to the public: Southern Biscuits and Gravy, Greektown Gyro, New York Reuben and West Coast Truffle Fries. The new chips are available in stores starting July 15, and the contest will end on July 27. So make sure you taste all flavors, vote for your favorite flavor, and wait until the end of the month for Lay’s to reveal the winner of this year's Do Us A Flavor challenge!

11 Sisters We Want to See in Balmain's Sibling Ad

As far as celebrity friend groups go, one of the crews who consistently set the standard for our #squadgoals are the sister duos of Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Gigi and Bella Hadid. These girls are constantly killing the fashion game whether they are on the red carpet or on a grocery run, and Balmain Paris’ new ad campaign is no exception. Our favorite sisters, along with supermodel siblings Joan and Erika Smalls, are the faces of the French fashion house’s fall campaign and we just cannot handle how amazing they look.

Unfortunately, only the Jenner, Hadid, and Smalls girls are featured in the campaign. However, here are a handful of other stylish sisters who we think would totally slay this ad.

1. Beyoncé and Solange Knowles

We don’t even understand how Balmain could have a sister ad and not include these ***flawless divas.

2. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian

Sure, Kim already has a Balmain ad with Kanye but for all the head-to-toe Balmain looks that these ladies sport, having them as a face of the brand should be a no-brainer.

3. Sofia and Nicole Richie

With Sofia being named the new It girl of Madonna’s “Material Girl” fashion line and Nicole having her own fashion line, these sisters are taking the fashion world by storm and deserve an ad to celebrate their success.

4. Serena and Venus Williams

These sisters completely slay everything that they do (Wimbledon, for example) and this campaign would be no different.

5. Zooey and Emily Deschanel

Not only are they two of our favorite ladies on television, but those piercing, blue eyes would make for absolutely stunning pictures.

6. Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen

These ladies have become so accustomed to being behind the scenes of fashion as of late, so we would love to see them in front of the camera!

7. Tia and Tamera Mowry

Tia and Tamera will forever be our original #sistergoals and a Sister, Sister ad is something us '90s girls never knew we needed until now.

8. Vanessa and Stella Hudgens

Vanessa has been the face of Bongo’s ad campaign and her little sister is currently the face of Mudd along with Noah Cyrus and Allie Simpson. We would love to see these gorgeous sisters share a high-fashion campaign.

9. Dakota and Elle Fanning

The lovely blondes are oh-so-fashionable already and would totally give Kylie and Kendall a run for their money!

10. Hilary and Haylie Duff

Our lips definitely would not be sealed if these sisters joined in on the sibling fun.

11. Cara and Poppy Delevingne

How can you even think of doing high fashion without this sister act?

What famous sisters would you love to see in the Balmain campaign, collegiettes?

5 Money Lessons Every Graduette Should Know

$
0
0

In the words of Ms. Carrie Bradshaw, “I like my money where I can see it—hanging in my closet.”

Oh… don’t we all Carrie, don’t we all… but as graduettes, there comes a time where we must put on our big girl pants and learn to take care of business. With real world jobs and responsibilities comes the grown-up stuff we wish we didn’t have to worry about—including taking control of our finances. Sure, the “b” word (“budgeting”) has crossed our mind a few times, but it always seems so difficult and tedious, and something that should be happening in the future. If you’re like most twentysomethings you may not even know where to start, let alone successfully manage your finances. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered with these five money lessons.

1. Close your account at “Bank of Mom and Dad”

During college, many of you weren’t able to completely support yourselves. Whether you had an entire expense account to blow, or had grocery money tossed to you every now and then, it was nice having parents who loved you, cared about you, and supported you… even when you were away at college. However, becoming dependent on this safety net is often what keeps many collegiettes, and graduettes, from being able to succeed and thrive financially on their own.

Utilizing your parent’s resources every once and a while when the going gets tough is okay, but if you find that you’re consistently short on rent, bills, or in a perpetual state of “broke and fabulous,” you may want to reconsider how you are managing your money. By slowly weaning yourself off the financial cushion provided by your parents, you’ll gain the ability to become an independent and responsible adult.

Rather than relying on your parent's financial account entirely, try using them as a source of financial advice and knowledge. Find out how they saved in the past, what mistakes they may have made, and what you can do to assure you can have a financially stable future.

2. Start saving RIGHT. NOW.

One of the hardest lifestyle changes that take place in your twenties is learning that saving is not only smart, but necessary, when learning to manage your money correctly. As new members of the “Real World Club” with a new job, salary, and apartment, we find ourselves in a constant state of movement—and always seem to be reaching for more instant gratification. It’s difficult to save and put money away for later years, especially when we really want that new cherry red convertible, wardrobe, or even something as small as the designer bag you saw at the mall the other day.

We get it; saving money is HARD. In the past, working menial jobs throughout college with such little income made it hard just to afford Taco Tuesday night. Yet now, with a degree and full-time job, there’s no more room for excuses.

As we enter our after-college lives, the concept of saving is something we often put off. We think, “I’ll start next year,” or “after this paycheck” or the next… or the next… But the longer you wait, the more we’ll regret it in the future. As painful as it is to save now, it’ll be even more painful to look back ten years later and wish you started today. We’re not only talking about saving for a rainy day… we’re talking about the big picture.

According to Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, President of Charles Schwab Foundation, “The sooner you start saving and investing, the easier it is on your budget… the sooner you start the less you have to save because you have time on your side.”

In other words, the money you save and invest today will be worth so much more 10, 20, and 30 years from now thanks to compounding interest; no matter how little the amount may initially seem. On the other hand, if you wait to start saving 10 or 20 years down the road, the money saved will have less time to gain interest, meaning you’ll ultimately end up with less, even if you're saving more each month. Experts from Forbes.com suggest saving at least ten percent of your income annually in your 20s in order to properly prepare for retirement.

Sure, it would be nice to actually spend our entire hard-earned paycheck month after month, but in reality, what you come to learn in your twenties is that saving may not be as overrated as it seems. So take our advice. Start saving. Start early. Start now.

3. What in the world is a credit score? And how can I get one?

In college, we were taught everything from political theories to chemical formulas—most of which we’ll never use again. Through all the lectures and exams, you’d think we’d have at least learn more about this whole credit score thing.

According to Investopedia.com, a credit score is defined as a number that reflects an individual’s '"credit worthiness” and is used by financial lenders and institutions in order to see how likely a person is to pay back his or her debt. This number is calculated to be anywhere from 300 to 850. The higher the number, the better the score.

As you may know, a bad credit score can keep you from doing a lot of great things in life such as buying a car or a house. Without a good credit score, lenders have a hard time trusting you enough to lend you money, or to let you open a credit account. So if you need good credit in order to even get approved to start building good credit, how in the world are you ever supposed to start in the first place? Fortunately, you’re not the first to ask this question, and there are a lot of experts and resources that can help you answer this and many others.

A great place to begin is at your local bank. Speak with an advisor about opening your first line of credit. Every card is different, so be sure you know the benefits and drawbacks (for example, whether there are any fees, and what the interest rates are), and what you need to do to get approved.  If you’re unable to get approved on your own, you may be able to work out other options.

Try looking into a credit card that specifically caters to college students or recent grads, such as Discover It or Capital One’s Journey Student Credit Card. These cards often offer perks and benefits that are specifically helpful for twenty-omethings. These perks can include point redemption on items you spend the most on such as gas or restaurants. This can be particularly helpful for building credit because many find it helpful to use these cards specifically for the rewards categories only. If you’re worried about falling into debt, or overusing your card, try using a card with gas rewards exclusively at gas stations. This can also help for budgeting purposes as you’ll be able to see exactly how much you spend on gas each and every month. Just be sure to only spend what you can pay back. Pay regularly, pay on time, and you’ll be on the right track. Be sure to do your research and you’ll be one step closer to a better credit score in no time.

4. Organize, budget, and take control

Figuring out things such as income, bills, expenses, and taxes can all seem pretty overwhelming at first. Where do you even start? Whether you have one bank account or two, two lines of credit or six, what’s important is that you are able to organize everything into one place. Mint is a great app that not only helps you organize your finances, but budget and take control of them as well. With Mint, you’re able to see all your accounts in one place; you'll see how much money is coming in and how much is going out, so it's easy to get a glance at what you're spending on. At the end of each period, you are able to see a snapshot of your overall wealth and debt. Additionally, Mint will give you a free credit score every month provided by Equifax. Although there may be multiple methods of managing this information, the important part is that you find a method that works for you and that you are able to stick with it.

Start by penciling out a plan. A standard way many people go about organizing finances is giving “every dollar a job.” As we talked about earlier, you’ll need to start saving for retirement and your “rainy day emergency fund” as soon as you start having income. That gives at least 15 to 20 percent of your income the job of providing security.

Next, you’ll need to budget expenses. This includes everything from rent, utilities, food, car payments, student loan payments, and other bills. While this will typically vary for each individual, be sure that you adjust your budget and planning to your own needs. Although you may have been able to afford going to dinner and a movie every weekend while living at home, now that you’re in the real world, lifestyle changes may need to be made in order to live within your means and for you to achieve your financial goals.

5. Differentiate between wants and needs

Understanding the difference between wants and needs may seem pretty basic, but believe it or not, this is probably one of the most difficult lessons we have to learn in our twenties. Self-indulgence and self-control are at a constant battle in the real world. It’s almost as if each and every item just shouts at you saying, “HEY! You deserve me! You need me!” #thestruggle. But as much as you think you need a new dress for your hot date this weekend, in reality, it wouldn’t kill you to just wear your go-to LBD.

On the other hand, legitimate needs such as doctor appointments and car maintenance often tend to get put on the back burner because they are such large expenses, and putting down that much at once might feel excessive, no matter how necessary. At the end of day, as much as you may hate to admit it, these are the actual needs that your income should be spent on. Sure, it’s okay to treat yourself from time to time, but there’s a big difference between buying a nice new pair of shoes that make you look like a million bucks and buying a pair of shoes that cost nearly a million bucks. Just like anything else, moderation is key.

Agreed, we all need to treat ourselves from time to time whether it be dinner with friends, or a mani-pedi just to relax for a bit, but be sure that these “needs” still correlate and are added within your budget. If you feel there is something you just can’t live without, be sure you know that while your money is going towards one thing, it is being taken from another. If you stick to your budget and savings plan you’ll see that in order to get what you want, you need to make sacrifices. If that means taking a trip to the secondhand store for work clothes, or seeing a early matinee movie instead, that’s okay. It may seem difficult now, but if you gain a grasp of it all now, it’ll be that much easier to achieve your financial goals in the future.

Managing your finances after graduation can be quite a struggle but just like anything else, these things take time and patience. It won’t be easy at first, and there may be a lot of trial and error, but if you start now you’ll be thanking yourself years down the line. Do your research, spend wisely, and stay organized; you’ll have your finances under control in no time.

Sad News: Netflix Will be Raising Their Prices Soon

$
0
0

Devastating news, collegiettes, Netflix will be raising their prices in the near future. Currently, we’ve been paying $7.99 a month to feed our Orange is the New Black and House of Cards addictions, but that will be changing soon.

There’s no word yet on how much the prices will go up, but according to Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, “[they]want to take it very slow.” So fear not, it looks like prices will be safe until next year, and even then they won’t be going up by too much. This may not be such a bad thing considering that Netflix is also talking about adding more content.

“Over the next decade I think we’ll be able to add more content and have more value and then price that appropriately,” Hasting said.

The streaming service will also be cracking down on mass password sharing, so instead of sharing your best friend’s brother’s cousin’s account with ten people, it may be time to invest in your own.

While this news may seem devastating on the surface, it may mean added content for a much better viewing experience. An extra dollar or two a month for more shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt doesn’t seem so bad.

How She Got There: Reham Fagiri, Co-Founder of AptDeco

Name: Reham Fagiri

Job Title and Description: Co-Founder of AptDeco

College Name/Major: BSc. in Electrical Engineering/University of Maryland College Park and MBA/University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School

Website: www.aptdeco.com

Twitter Handle: @aptdeco

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Reham Fagiri: My day varies quite a bit, and it would be hard to describe a "typical day." As a young startup with a team of only six, it means that I’m very involved in every aspect of the company - from marketing, product development to scouting out a new office and decorating the space (we just moved!). Typically though, I get in around 9AM and sit down with my co-founder and team to plan for the day ahead. This includes chatting about any media interviews we have scheduled and what new features/announcements we have in the works and how we intend to execute them. Not surprisingly, a lot of my day is spent on email coordinating logistics, dealing with customer enquiries, working with our engineers and ensuring we are providing the best level of customer service to our customers.

What is the best part of your job?

RF: I love coming in to work every day knowing that I am working on something that I have built that answers a need to a problem that I saw within the market. It’s a pretty amazing feeling knowing that I’m putting my time and energy into something that emanated from a problem that I had with trying to sell my own furniture and knowing that I’m providing a safer, more streamlined way so that others can avoid the stresses and inconvenient hurdles that I faced.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

RF: After I completed my undergraduate degree, I began working at Goldman Sachs in engineering and eventually tech management. I was part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) chapter at the University of Maryland College Park, so right before graduation I attended SWE’s national conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I met Goldman Sachs reps during the conference and we stayed in touch. A few weeks later I was invited for an interview and the rest is history.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

RF: Where to start? When you’re starting your own business, so much is unknown, which is both terrifying and incredibly exciting. Business and grad school can only prepare you for so much, the real learning comes on the job and I think this applies to every industry. Everyone tells you how hard it is starting your own business but I guess you don’t fully understand it until you actually do it. There’s so many different things to consider and it takes time to learn how to prioritize what is most important and deserving of your time. There is really no magic formula for success; it’s all about trying different things with the knowledge that some things will work and some will not.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

RF: I would have to say my co-founder Kalam Dennis, who is also one of my closest friends. Everyone always tells you never to go into business with friends but we’ve made it work and I feel my professional life and our company is all the better knowing that what we have built AptDeco on the foundation of a strong friendship. Building a startup is hard! It’s the most extreme roller coaster. Having someone that you’re close with is very beneficial to help manage the ups and downs to keep your sanity.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

RF: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” —Steve Jobs, Apple Inc. co-founder, chairman and CEO.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

RF: I’d say not monitoring our business expenses closely enough almost cost us our business at one point in time.

As a founder I had to quickly learn the art of juggling many things at once. Despite that, we all know it’s human nature to want to spend more time on the things you enjoy versus the things you don't. For me, focusing on the growth of the business was exciting and fun but it came at the expense of monitoring our financial health more closely.  While our business was reaching amazing heights, frankly, at times we couldn’t even keep up with it. I was amassing a huge bill and it dropped like a hammer one month. It's amazing to see how an expense can balloon if you don't watch it closely. Thankfully it was a lesson we were able to rebound from and, now monitor every dime we spend, literally!

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

RF: When Kalam and I were accepted into Y Combinator for AptDeco, that was pretty surreal. We attribute so much of our success to what we learned during our time there.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

RF: You’ve no doubt heard it before, but professionalism is a really core component when it comes to being hired. Dressing the part and going that little extra way will always make a good impression on any future employer. I also don’t just look at the candidate’s qualifications, but also their personality and how I see them fitting in with the rest of the team. You end up spending a lot of time together working as a small team so it’s really important that everyone gets along. Sending a thank you note and writing a killer cover letter go a long way too. Do your research on the company and make your application personal and you’ll be surprised how much further that gets you!

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

RF: Do extensive research. Know more than anyone else regarding what you’re working on. (i.e. in tech = be the best coder). Combine knowledge with unrelenting will and you’ll make it!

This Man Loves Burritos So Much, He Got ‘Engaged’ to One

Ever get annoyed by all the lovey couples and engagement photos on Facebook? Then you have something in common with David Sikorski, a San Francisco-based writer who decided to express his love for burritos by staging engagement photos with one.

"I've reached the age where my Facebook is now filled with engagement and baby photos," Sikorski told The Huffington Post. "I already had a strong burrito love, so I called one of my music photographer friends…and naturally she jumped at the idea."

With his one true love, aka the carne asada burrito from Taqueria La Cumbre in San Francisco, Sikorski traveled all over the city for the perfect engagement photos.

They took a long walk on the beach.

Then did some sightseeing by the Golden Gate Bridge.

And what engagement photos would be complete without a cheesy, gazing-into-each-other’s-eyes pic?

Eventually, Sikorski got hungry and ate the original burrito, but he wants his spoof on engagement photos to encourage others to "embrace whatever love situation—or lack thereof" they’re in. "Some people are going out and getting married," he said. "And others are fine just enjoying a good burrito."

Thank you, Sikorski, for validating our true love for Mexican food.

7 Questions to Ask Your Boss Before Your Internship Ends

When it comes to internships, we've all had our fair share of "what if" moments—what if I had done this one project differently? What if I had gotten to know so-and-so better? What if I had just gone up to my supervisor and asked the questions I wanted to ask?

Collegiettes, it’s officially time to change the "what if" to the "just did." It’s pretty safe to say that we’re all trying to get the most learning and networking out of our internships, so don’t be hesitant to go up to your supervisor and ask a lot of good questions. You'll impress your boss and get some answers at the same time. Plus, you might never get another chance like this once your internship ends! So take advantage of your intern status now and check out these seven questions you should definitely ask your supervisor while you're still interning for her.

1. "Can I touch base with you about both your expectations of me and my personal goals for this internship?"

You might have some huge aspirations for your internship—being a major contributor to a project or landing a full-time job, for example—but your supervisor might not have the darndest clue. If you're going to get the most out of your internship, you have to make sure that you and your boss are on the same page when it comes to the larger goals of your internship and actively working to achieve them. Ideally, aim to touch base multiple times throughout the internship so you know you're on track from both your supervisor's standpoint and your own.

"It's all about timing and the power of access," says Kimberly Rolfe, the director for business engagement at Whitman College. "If you're still on their payroll, they're more likely to give you their attention. An employer wants an engaged and energized intern—especially if they're looking to transition someone into full-time employment."

But with your supervisor zipping around all day and having his or her hands full 24/7, it might be hard to squeeze in a few words. In this case, you have to be creative with finding ways to get the answers you need. If you need advice determining the best approach for reaching a supervisor, coworkers can shed some light on how they've had success.

"I recommend a scheduled one-on-one, but you have to know your audience," Rolfe says. "If your supervisor is a better written communicator, then you'll get a more useful response via email.  If they are incredibly busy, you have to figure out how you'll get their time and attention to have a meaningful dialogue."

Once you've got your boss's attention, convey your enthusiasm by showing interest in not only achieving your own goals, but also helping the company achieve its goals. What do you hope to take away from this internship? Are you learning the skills you were hoping to gain? How are you contributing to the company? Is your work meeting your supervisor's expectations? According to Rolfe, the answers you and your supervisor come up with should include the expected outcomes for both the employer and the student.

"A demonstrated interest in the outcome not only for the individual, but for the organization shows the supervisor that the intern is committed to learning, interested in the field and invested in their future," Rolfe says.

There's a lot of give-and-take, and the over-quoted phrase "You get what you give" is actually pretty appropriate in this case.

2. "What do you feel is currently missing from the team, and how can I fill that gap?"

Every team has its weaknesses, and as the flexible, free-to-wander, not-yet-established intern, you're in the perfect position to fill in those weak spots. Find a niche for yourself, and you'll be ready to go. If a team has been struggling to find someone who is good at or willing to do X, establish yourself as the go-to person for X. That way, you'll end up doing more meaningful work, feeling more like a part of the team and learning a lot.

"One of the most valuable questions I asked a new supervisor—long into my career—was what they were needing from the team in place that they felt was missing," Rolfe says. "Then, I was able to focus my efforts in that area to make myself more valuable to the organization and my supervisor.”

You can make yourself irreplaceable by acquiring the skills that are needed. If it's something more technical, find resources in your network or online to help you gain those skills. If it's a soft skill, like communication or teamwork, "dig a bit to find out what success in those areas would look like to your supervisor," Rolfe says. She also suggests interns fine their areas of expertise and hone those skills, but not at the expense of other work that the department or organization may need.

"Your job as an intern is to learn from the organization in whatever way the internship is structured, so that should be your primary goal," Rolfe says. "It's a delicate balance between creating your individual value and adding that value to a project team or department to contribute to organizational goals."

In the end, being considerate and aware of what the organization needs from you goes a long way and can even put you in a better position to be offered a full-time job!

3. "How am I doing? What can I do to improve, and how can I go about doing so?"

It's great to go full speed into a new internship, but it's also important to remember to take some pit stops from time to time. Some collegiettes may have a few bumps and winding roads along the way; some may not. Some may zip by a few stop signs without even realizing it, and some collegiettes won’t. No matter what your road conditions and driving habits are, it's always a good idea to check in with the authorities every now and then.

Your supervisors are there to help you succeed, so make sure you're giving them the opportunity to give you feedback. If you're not doing so well, ask them for critique. While it's definitely hard to take critique, it’s one of the best ways to learn.

"We are a society that thrives on success and winning, but there is so much more to learn from failing and the critique of those you work with," Rolfe says. "My tip for taking criticism well is to ask for an honest assessment and then just listen. Ask clarifying questions if necessary, but do not respond, do not argue, do not feel that you need to defend—you're there to learn."

In fact, make sure to take notes when your supervisor offers critique to show that you're earnest about understanding it.  Thank your supervisor for the time and then take time to digest the information you've been given. How do you feel about it?  How can you improve and adjust?  What are you missing that they need, and how can you bring that to your work? According to Rolfe, there’s no need to respond unless you've been asked, but simply adjust your work style to address the critique or follow up if you need further clarification.

And if you're getting pats on the back, still ask your supervisor for things you can do better. After all, there's always room for improvement!

4. "How did you get to where you are today?"

Let's admit it—people love talking about themselves. Your supervisors are probably no different! But instead of talking about their latest successes at the shopping mall or the fun they had at the party that you totally shouldn't have missed, your bosses will shower you with pieces of sage advice they’ve learned from their own experiences.

But really, at a time when you're trying to figure out your future career path, your supervisor is a fantastic resource. Bosses have been where you've been (oh, right; they were our age once!) and have taken both right and wrong turns, yet, through it all, they've somehow navigated the industry and ended up where they are today. Keep your ears open, because there's some invaluable advice amidst the life stories.

"I personally tend to ask questions about what choices my supervisors made to make it to the career they are in," says Josephine Barnor, a rising senior at the University of Tennessee and an intern at Ernst & Young. "Gaining … insights about your career choices helps you make a right decision."

You can really ask this question to anyone—supervisors, alumni and network connections. Usually, it's asked during either your initial or final meeting with the supervisor or over a casual lunch break or ad hoc conversation.

"It's a great way to kill time on the way to a meeting or waiting for one to start," Rolfe says. "I would dive right in with a casual tone so it sounds like small talk but allows them to share their insight and experience with you."

If you listen to their stories, you’ll be a whole lot better at writing your own. And we promise they won't be like another one of those, "When I was your age" stories your grandmother always tells!

5. "Could you recommend people in the field whom I could talk to about my career?"

Networking, networking, networking—you can never do enough. And when it comes to building a career network for yourself, your supervisor is definitely not someone you want to consider lightly. Supervisors might know people who may be willing to mentor you or provide invaluable information about the industry. Before you leave an internship, make sure to strengthen those ties.

"I would certainly recommend that any intern ask not only their supervisor, but also coworkers to connect them to others in the field that would be a valued resource for information that could help shape their career," Rolfe says.

Plus, asking for contacts also shows your genuine interest in the field and in the future. It's a win-win!

6. "What courses do you suggest I take in school to maximize my learning?"

At the end of the day, you're still a student, and your main objective is still to learn. While you may have already gained lots of hands-on experience from the internship, you're still going to have to rely on learning in the classroom when the summer's over. Before you have to return back to campus, remember to ask your supervisor what courses you can take at school to continue learning, growing and preparing for you career.

Josephine thinks this is the number one question to ask supervisors toward the end of internships in order to gain insight and to show initiative for career preparation. Before you ask, however, Rolfe suggests first re-considering the answers you received from question #2 above, because you might already have received similar advice already.

"If you're enjoying the internship and want to return to the organization or continue to pursue the field, then I would certainly seek out their advice for the ‘must haves’ - whether you choose to add them to your academic program or seek out that learning via other methods is then up to you," Rolfe says. "However, ensure that you've considered [previous conversations] before you specify to the course level to avoid redundancy.  It can also be very valuable to seek out their opinion if you are considering post-grad education."

Your supervisors will already be familiar with what you've been working on during the internship and are in a position to suggest wise next steps for you to take regarding your academics.

7. "What skills or traits are my real assets?"

At this point you're probably thinking, “enough with the improvements; let's focus on the good stuff!” Wish granted. While it's useful to ask for critique and focus on improvement, sometimes it's nice to look at what you're doing right. And who better to ask than your supervisor? Not only will this make your ego happy, but this will also give you insight into what you're genuinely good at, which will help you find a career that's right for you.

"Looking back on the direction my career took after my internship, I wish I would have asked her what skills she felt were my real assets," Rolfe says. "If I had known that earlier in my career, it might have saved some frustration down the road.  People are often happy to share where you need to improve, but hearing what you do well so you can focus on using those skills more in your work is very helpful."

Of course, it's hard not to sound like you're fishing for compliments. One way to ask this question in a more humble way is to simply ask what strengths you bring to the team and how you're adding value to the work being done.

"Everyone has strengths that they bring to an organization, and if a supervisor is building their team well, they are balancing the strengths of the team to create a stronger whole," Rolfe says. "Sometimes a supervisor will turn this question around on you and ask the same thing of you, so be prepared to share what you see as your contributions and assets."

Whether the things you'll hear are reassertions or surprises, learning about your real assets will not only help you figure out the right career path for you, but will also help you learn more about who you are as a person.

Although the summer is quickly coming to a close (can you believe it?), there’s still time for you to approach your supervisor and ask some great questions. She’s there to help you get in as much learning and networking as possible, so take every chance to listen to and learn from her while you still can!

What's even better than our favorite scoop of Ben & Jerry's? Gelato—the rich and decadent Italian version of our beloved summertime treat. Made with less fat and air than ice cream and served at a slightly warmer temperature, gelato has a soft and slow-melting texture that's impossible to outdo. Basically, we're addicted, and now you will be too.

Gelato is unique in that it offers extremely vibrant and strong flavors. The indulgent, concentrated tastes that tickle our taste buds are unbelievably dreamy, and the wide array of mouth-watering varieties is about to get a whole lot larger, thanks to gelato-making genius Talenti.

A brand boasting an already-incredible repertoire of authentic and high-quality gelato (and sorbetto) flavors, Talenti is ready to expand their collection by handcrafting customized flavors to match their fans' personalities.

Yes, you can now be matched to the perfect personality-inspired gelato flavor—one made specifically for you.

But how? By accessing your various social media accounts, Talenti will create a fictional flavor that's basically you in gelato form. Intrigued and amazed? Same. According to Refinery29, Talenti will be using an impressive algorithm that matches a huge database of common words to their corresponding tastes (such as sweet, salty, and spicy). Once your flavor personality is determined, Talenti will dive into a pool of yummy ingredients to compose a unique, custom treat.

Visit Talenti's Flavorize Me webpage to get in on the magic. And once you're matched, rejoice in the knowledge that your custom fantasy flavor may actually become a reality! That's right—you have until August 22 to check out your custom flavor, and Talenti will be tracking all of the results. Then, by September 15, Talenti may reach out to you with the exciting news that your flavor has been selected for actual production!

According to the website, users have already been matched to some crazy flavors, including Cocoa Chestnut Almond (yum) and Apple Cider Cabernet Ginger Cake (...interesting?). Not sure you're adventurous enough to try one of these wild mixes? Talenti will also provide you with an existing flavor that they feel represents you best, so you can get in on taste-testing without the wait (or the guilt—these babies are 30% less fatty than ice cream and never contain high-fructose corn syrup, which as far as we're concerned translates to being healthy).

Of course, this awesome new campaign begs the question, what flavor would Her Campus be?

Best of luck, collegiettes, and be sure to let us know if your flavor is chosen!

Instagram Banned #Curvy So #Curvee is the New #Curvy

You’ve probably heard about free the nipple; well now there’s free the curves. Instagram has been trying to limit the nude photos shared on the social network and as a result #curvy has been made unsearchable. This has left many curvy women aggravated with Instagram’s policy, with many women opting to use #curvee instead.

The recent emergence of movements such as #effyourbeautystandards has inspired many women to embrace their curves and to love their bodies exactly the way they are. These women want Instagram to #bringcurvyback so that they can proudly flaunt their curvy looks.

“My curves are a part of who I am, they help make me beautiful. I may not have the ideal body, but I'm comfortable the way I am most of the time and am learning to love myself,” user jadeyface92 wrote. It’s inspiring that these women have found a way to love themselves in a social climate that often promotes the opposite. We hope Instagram sees this and brings #curvy back.

Siri is Standing Up for Caitlyn Jenner

This realization is currently circulating the Internet: Siri refers to Caitlyn Jenner only by the name she currently identifies with. When asked questions using Caitlyn's former name, Siri will automatically correct you, and respond with the name Caitlyn. How awesome is that?

Siri knows more than just Caitlyn's name, as seen in the screenshot below.

While Siri's sassy response to the question, "What is zero divided by zero?" recently made its rounds online, we think this bit of iPhone knowledge is much more important. We're glad to see that Apple is on top of its game when it comes to this relevant LGBTQ+ topic.

Why One Direction is Totally Fine Without Zayn

Let's face it, One Direction is the boyband of the decade. Up until this year, the band had every kind of guy you could want: the flirt, the funny one, the sensitive one, the bad boy and the Irishman (who doesn't love a good Irish man? Hello, Gerard Butler!). Anyone who is anyone knows who they are and 90% of the population secretly likes them. But then we all got our hearts broken when Zayn Malik (the bad boy) decided to leave the band. While we all mourned the loss, here's why One Direction is doing just fine without him.

We can't deny that they looked great as a fivesome...

...But as a foursome, they still look amazing.

And as great as this group selfie is...

...Their first-ever group selfie without Zayn looks even better (sorry not sorry).

We also know we can't deny Zayn singing sounded like angels singing...

...but him being gone gives others a chance for more solos.

And while we may miss Zayn's crazy hair styles on stage...

We still get to watch Harry make his man bun.

And we all know Zayn was fun to be around...

...But that doesn't mean they can't have just as much fun without him.

Then there was Zayn's bad dancing and hate for it that always overshadowed everyone else's...

So now we can watch the other boys more closely.

So now that the resident bad boy of the group is gone,

We guess this means one of these guys is going to have to take his place!

Sorry Niall girls, but we don't think he could really fill the position, he's wayyyyyy too adorable.

And Louis may have the tattoos, but we really need him to keep being the funny one.

Then there's Liam, who sure can rock the bad boy snapback-and-tattoos look.

Or Harry...

But despite many fanfictions, that smile just screams "I'm an adorable, flirty guy who apologizes to dogs after I trip over them."

While One Direction was awesome with all five guys, we love them with the four that are left, too. Without Zayn, they're still touring, releasing a fifth album, and it looks like Liam gets to take the reigns as the bad boy of the group! We'll always watch the 'Night Changes' video and wish Zayn sat across from us at the table and we'll always wish he would ask us "vas happenin'?!" But life moves on, and up is really the only one direction to go in!
