The Weeknd Is Teaming Up With Marvel Comics To Release A Graphic Novel Based On His Own Superhero

As if The Weeknd hadn’t slayed my life enough already with his sultry, sexy songs, he’s about to slay even more as a sultry, sexy superhero.

The Canadian singer has partnered up with Marvel Comics to create a graphic novel series called The Weeknd Presents: Starboy, based on his 2016 hit song and album titled Starboy. The first issue will be released on June 13.

I can’t even with him. The man even looks good as a comic book character.

According to Marvel, Starboy’s story involves the fictional city of Alphatron “in the grip of a crime wave, as the terrifying Jack “The Chef” Smiley has unified all criminal organizations with his ruthlessness and strategic genius. Not content with brutally murdering his victims, Smiley also feasts upon their flesh.” Uh oh! It looks like it’s up to Starboy to save the city.

The Weeknd is apparently a big fan of comics. “Marvel is the pinnacle of success in their field and I’ve been a lifelong fan of their work," he said. "To be able to partner with them is a dream come true.”

Marvel does appear to be hitting a high point right now, specifically with Black Panther (which features The Weeknd on its soundtrack) topping the box office for the past several weeks and breaking tons of records. Because the movie was so successful, that encourages Marvel to partner with unique perspectives to create new superheroes.

I can’t wait to read The Weeknd’s series, and I hope comic book fans are as passionate about it as he is—after all, he’s “Earned It.”

How to Fall Back in Love with Your Major

$

0

You entered college bright-eyed and ready to take on the world. You declared your major and then found yourself second guessing it all. The classwork began to pile up, the exams got harder and you suddenly began questioning if this is even the field you want to be in.

You feel burned out, but it happens to a lot of us. The key, however, is knowing when to take a step back and reevaluate the situation to determine if you’re just stressed out or truly uninterested. Before you lose all hope, try these five ways to fall back in love with your major.

1. Remind yourself why you chose your major in the first place

Before you make any hasty decisions, it’s always best to reflect upon why you started something in the first place. “Make a list of reasons why you choose [your major] in the first place and where you saw yourself going with it at that time,” said Kaitlin Manion, a graduate student at Temple University. “Then make a list of frustrations about why you're ‘falling out of love’ with it and see if there's a solution.” When you are able to see all the reasons you selected your major in the first place, it might help reignite the spark you once had.

2. Understand that every major has its problems

It can be easy to see your friends who chose different majors enjoying their college experience more, whether that be with less schoolwork or more engaging classes. However, everyone’s college journey is unique and is designed to prepare you for your own future. Don’t get caught up in comparing yourself to others. Understand that every major has its setbacks, and that you may just be experiencing one of those.

3. Seek advice

Sometimes all we need is a pep talk to get us out of our funk. Seeking advice from a professor, counselor, friend or even someone in your desired career field can shed light on your current situation. They might have even experienced the same lull and can give you first-hand knowledge of how to overcome it. Molly Crum, a senior at James Madison University, says, “I always think talking to professionals who had the same major as you when they were in college is helpful when you're feeling uninspired. It's a reminder how what you're learning in your major classes can be applied to the real world and lead you to have a job you love someday.”

Related: What Your Major Should REALLY Be Called

4. Focus on the end goal

Oftentimes we find ourselves caught up in the stress of situations and we forget to remind ourselves what we’re working towards. Creating a mini mood board for your dorm room that is covered in inspiring pictures and positive words of affirmation can be a daily motivator to keep going. Or, simply sitting down and writing out all the positive outcomes that come from completing your major can spark new interest. Gillian Bosonetto, Director of Career Development at Mars Hill University says, “It can be helpful to volunteer or even shadow someone in the field that you're thinking of going into, as it connects to your major, to see where the true value of your courses may lie. Summer breaks or internships can be a good opportunity to do get into the field, hands-on. Sometimes just seeing what work is like without the subject knowledge and/or credentials is enough to motivate you again into mastering the subject, or sometimes the light bulb goes on, and you can see why the course that is challenging you is so important."

She also recommends taking a break or trying some alternative courses, if you have the time, as another way to refresh your energy around your original goal. "And if perhaps that original goal was not the right one, you may find another path that attracts and inspires you even more," she says. "There are many paths to fulfillment, and often we come full circle back to our initial choices and preferences, but discover other rewards along the way. No one specific major is the magic silver bullet to career or life success, but not completing any major is likely to be much more frustrating and discouraging in the long run. Be gentle with yourself and seek help as often as needed, but also be honest about how much work and commitment is required. If it was easy, everyone could do it and it wouldn't have as much value. Stay the course, unless you truly have found a better option. Everyone regrets completing a degree—said no one ever!"

5. Branch out

One of the greatest things about college is how many options you have. If you’re uninterested in one of your classes, try taking an elective completely different from your major, in order to balance things out. Abby Piper, a junior at Notre Dame, says, “If you can fit it in your schedule, take some other kinds of classes, whether they be gen-eds or another minor or major. I think anyone would get a little bored of only taking one subject.” Most universities offer a wide-range of minors to add to your major, so seek out new courses and don’t be afraid to ask what your options are.

Remember life greets you with challenges daily, so take this bump in the road like you would any other, and work through it. Good luck, collegiettes!

San Francisco Just Became the Largest City to Officially Ban the Sale of New Fur

In recent years, many luxury designers like Gucci and Versace have stopped using real fur. Just earlier this week, San Francisco became the first official major city to ban sales of new fur items according to Time Out San Francisco, paving the way for a more ethical industry.

The ban applies to all newly produced fur accessories and clothing, but doesn't include vintage pieces or anything made from sheepskin and lambskin. Anything purchased online will also not be deliverable to a San Francisco address and will be put into effect early next year.

"The sale of fur products in San Francisco is inconsistent with the city's ethos of treating all living beings, humans and animals alike, with kindness," explained Katy Tang, San Francisco's district supervisor, in a press release. "We’re trying to pave the way to a less cruel future of fashion."

A great win for animal rights activists everywhere, we hope San Francisco will inspire other cities to become part of the movement!

This Is Why You're Not Seeing Plus-Sizes Available in Zendaya's Boohoo Collection

Zendaya recently released a gorgeous spring collection with fashion retailer Boohoo, but one thing seems to be missing. Although sizes 2 through 20 were advertised to be available in her line, plus-sizes were not seen at the time of launch, according to Teen Vogue. Fans were left wondering why, with one user tweeting, "Really disappointed to find that @Zendaya's boohoo edit (advertised for sizes 2-20) does not have inclusive sizing across the board. #why?"

Zendaya took to Twitter herself to respond to the issue, explaining that her collection sold out quickly in those sizes. "I've looked into it, apparently the curve sizes sold out first and that's why they're not showing up as available."

Boohoo released their own statement on Twitter as well, explaining that they experienced some technical issues and they're working on restocking items that sold out.

Hopefully they'll have the items back on the online shelves as quickly as they flew off them!

In An Amazing Move Toward Inclusivity, ASOS Will Soon Be Showing Different Sized Models for Each Outfit

Don't get me wrong - online shopping is amazing. You don't have to brave traffic, spend hours in line, or even change out of your pajamas. You can't try pieces on though, and for many people, that's one of the most stressful parts of shopping for clothes via the web. Thankfully, fast-fashion mega brand ASOS is working on making online shopping a little easier for us who don't have the typical "model" figure.

Interestingly enough, the initial news came from a Twitter user by the name of Eleanor, who gleefully posted a screenshot of ASOS's new app feature.

Quite the departure from the typical divide between "regular" models and "plus-size" models, it looks like soon, ASOS will be listing each item with representations for three or more body types. If you go to their website now, it's likely you won't find anything just yet, but the feature is well on its way. Keep in mind too, that Eleanor's profile says she lives in the United Kingdom, so the images she's posted are likely from the ASOS U.K. domain.

As of now, there's no word on exactly when these changes will be fully implemented, but we're hoping other brands take notice and step up in the meantime.

Leave it to Steven Colbert to bring out the badass in anyone. Well, to be fair – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was already one, you just might not have known it yet. Turns out, she's also a bonafide style icon as well! Just take a gander at that workout shirt she's rockin' during her interview:

Kitschy tees aren't the only way RBG builds her enviable #aesthetic, oh no. According to The Cut, she's got a scrunchie collection that would make even Heather Chandler blush. But back to the "Super Diva" shirt that speaks so clearly to my soul. Did you know that you too can be a proud owner/wearer of this amazing shirt, all while benefiting a great cause? All sales from the RGB Workout Tee ($30) will be donated to 2Unstoppable, an organization which "partners women diagnosed with cancer with other women to encourage and support physical and emotional fitness during and after cancer treatment." Has there ever been a better way to declare your awesomeness? I think not.

Now if I can just find myself a pair of those iconic glasses, I'll be set.

Taco Bell's Sauce-Inspired Tortilla Chips Are Heading To Stores & Nobody's Body Is Ready

If Taco Bell’s various hot sauce flavors and tortilla chips are two of your favorite things in the world and you’ve been wishing that you could, somehow, connect these two delicious things, look no further. Taco Bell is bringing a line of hot sauce-inspired tortilla chips to grocery stores, according to Eater.

The fast food chain already partners with Kraft foods to sell sauces, dips, shells and seasoning mixes. These new chips will be produced by Sugar Foods.

There will be three chip flavors to choose from, and they’re all inspired by the hot sauce Taco Bell serves, down to the design of the bags. “Classic” flavor will just be seasoned with salt and “mild” and “fire” will be flavored with various peppers and spices. In an interview with CNBC, Taco Bell chief brand officer Marisa Thalberg said, “Our sauce packets are one of the brand’s most unique aspects and were the natural choice for both the flavors and packaging of our tortilla chips.”

It would be natural to consider these new chips to be an obvious competitor for long-standing champion of all things flavored tortilla chips: Doritos. There may also be some worry out there over the future of the Doritos Locos Tacos.

However, there’s nothing to suggest Taco Bell is doing away with the fan favorite, and a company spokesperson for Taco Bell further dispelled that fear, saying, “There are no plans to replace the Doritos Locos Tacos shells with these chips flavors. . . We wanted to create tortilla chips that stood out as uniquely Taco Bell, in both their sauce packet flavors and packaging.”

You’ll be able to find these chips at your local grocery and convenience stores starting this May.

I Tried Microneedling to Get Rid Of Acne Scars, AKA Stabbing My Face With a Dozen Needles

$

Microneedling. Microrolling. Stabbing yourself in the face with a lot of needles. Whatever you want to call it, it's a newer trend in the ~mainstream beauty~ world, and it's an absolute favorite for many, especially the internet. Microneedling has tons of skincare benefits, and I wanted those benefits like, ASAP.

If you've watched Face Mask & Chill on our Instagram Story before, or read this series, you know a couple things about me. 1) That I'm willing to try basically any and every skincare trend, 2) that I have sensitive, combination, acne-prone skin, and 3) that my main goal when it comes to skincare these days is to get rid of old acne scars.

As soon as I learned about microneedling, I was instantly sucked in. So when Stacked Skincare sent me a Micro-Roller, it was pretty much the most exciting day of my life. Okay, it's an exaggeration, but honestly, I was pumped. I started to seriously do my research, figuring out what to do (and what not to do) with a micro-roller, what other tools and products I needed to make it happen, and how to use the micro-roller without just destroying my skin.

So WTF is microneedling? According to Stacked Skincare, their "spiky wonder tool uses safe stainless steel needles to gently micro-exfoliate and creates the appearance of smoother, plumper, firmer-looking skin." The Internet basically claims it's a life-saver for people with acne scars who are sooo close to finally being over their acne if only those damn scars would disappear. Enter micro-roller, the magical guy who helps refresh your skin and get some new, flawless cells to the surface.

Here's how it went down.

First, the preparation. Before you use a micro-roller, you want to make sure your skin is fresh and clean. I washed my face with my usual cleanser and let it air dry.

Next, I grabbed a serum. I went with one of my go-tos, the Noni Glow Face Oil by Kora Organics. It's calming and gentle enough that I felt comfortable using it alongside a new, more aggressive tool. I pressed the serum into my clean skin with my finger tips, and then it was time to roll.

When it comes to using a micro-roller, you want to roll it over your face vertically, horizontally and diagonally. You can even roll it over your neck and lips. Pro tip: DON'T do this every day. Use three to five times a week max, and make sure you clean it in between uses with 70 percent alcohol so you're not shoving nasty stuff into your skin.

Here's what happened.

At first use, I was nervous. My skin was pretty red, and it felt more sensitive than usual. I washed it with a really gentle cleanser and avoided layering on any of my usual acids or more intense products. But as I continued using the micro-roller throughout the week, my skin seemed to adjust to the needles, and by the third use my skin wasn't getting red at all. Instead, I was getting some serious glow, and my face felt more alive somehow. It basically looked like I'd had a dozen orgasms without the sex hair and sweat. The glow was real, you guys.

At the end of the day, I'm obsessed with this product, and will 100 percent be integrating it into my routine. What kind of sucks is that you're supposed to replace it every month, but considering that I don't get massages or facials or anything, I feel justified spending $30 a month on a product I'll get multiple uses out of. It's such a cool tool and I'm glad they're bringing microneedling to the ~lazy gal~ who doesn't have the time or money to pay a professional.

Try this, just make sure to do your research first, and find a serum that works with your skin's needs! I'm p sure you won't regret it.

Too Many People Were Preoccupied With Whether Joe Biden Or Donald Trump Would Win In A Fight & It Was Embarrassing AF

Of all the things people could possibly be discussing in regard to politics, the question of whether or not one politician could beat up another one doesn’t seem like it should even be considered for discussion outside a reddit fantasy league or a playground. So, obviously absolutely everyone is talking about whether President Trump could take down former vice president Joe Biden. Because of course they are.

The Washington Post reports that the general consensus among cable news reporters regarding Biden’s recent comment that he would “beat the hell out of” Trump while speaking at the University of Miami is that it was hypocritical. Some reporters also consider Trump’s tweet returning fire to be equally inappropriate and out of line with the usual, notable exceptions.

Biden spoke to the University of Miami College Democrats on Tuesday. The comments about beating up Trump came while he was discussing sexual assault and the infamous Access Hollywood tapes that surfaced during the 2016 elections came up. He disparaged Trump’s crude commentary to women and said that he’d rather “take him behind the barn and beat the hell out of him” than debate him.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s because Biden said almost the exact same thing in October of 2016 in reference to the same “locker room talk.”

Trump decided to hit back at Biden for his comment, taking to Twitter on Thursday to say that he could easily beat up “Crazy Joe Biden,” and that he “would go down hard and fast, crying all the way.”

CNBC’s Mike Brzezinski said Biden shouldn’t “say things like that,” lest he “play into the president’s game.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham condemned the fact that Biden was speaking against sexual assault while condoning physical assault. Even as she said this behavior was inexcusable, she made sure to make one thing clear: She believes Trump would win in this hypothetical fight.

Sean Hannity not only sought to establish that Trump would be the one to come out on top of a potential fight between the two; he also said he, too, could take down Biden, no problem. He also made sure to point out he trains MMA, just to really bring the intimidation in this increasingly strange fight.

The fact that this conversation is even happening at all, never mind the fact that national news anchors are weighing in on it, might just be the most ridiculous thing that has happened in 2018 so far. It is childish and the furthest thing from professional.

(But, come on, Biden would totally win.)

Katherine Langford Says She Wants To Direct A Film About Two Girls Falling In Love & Hey Man, I'm Down

Hollywood's youth seems like it genuinely wants to leave the industry better than they found it, by making some changes in on-screen representation.

Katherine Langford of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why did an interview with BuzzFeed alongside her Love, Simon co-star Nick Robinson, where she talked about wanting to direct movies one day. She described her dream movie to make, which involves a love story between two girls. "I really like the idea of capturing parts of yourself that you keep to yourself and you don't show to people. I think that's really cool,” she said. “I had this idea to tell when you fall in love with someone, but from a girl's perspective for another girl. I had a friend who told me about that. She just had a really beautiful story."

Since the high school coming out story in Love, Simon has been received really well, fans have been wanting there to be a similar movie that would give visibility to girls in the LGBTQ community.

There do appear to be a lot of similarities in the plots of movies depicting same-sex love stories, and the sooner we see more diversity in the way the stories are told, the better.

While Langford says she “(doesn’t) feel ready to direct something” just yet, this project wouldn’t be her first time exploring fairly uncharted territory for teen viewers. 13 Reasons Why (controversially) discussed issues of depression, suicide, and sexual assault—and now, Love, Simon is sparking conversations about the gay experience in high school.

It’s super cool that this is how Katherine wants to branch out, and I hope she gets to see her dream movie become a reality!

Do You Remember Your Old AOL Screen Names? Well, Demi Lovato Just Revealed Hers & They're Hilarious

Ah, the good old days of the Internet. You know, the days before social media hit and we would display our feelings via an away message or AIM profile. But covertly, of course, because we weren't at the bleeding, open wound stage of things yet.

We also tried to create something that was symbolic; a cool name that let people know we were allowed to go on the Internet and also what we were about. For instance, I was GlitterGirl43813 and as a person who loves all things sparkly, I stand by this as true to my nonexistent brand.

Superstar Demi Lovato was not immune to the heyday of the Internet when thinking up a cool screen name was all the rage. Billboard reveals that in a recent stop at the SiriusXM radio show Morning Mashup, the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer revealed her screen names were just as cringe-worthy as the rest of ours!

"I had Demilicious and Little Kelly because I was obsessed with Kelly Clarkson," Demi said.

Yes, you see, stars, they're just like the rest of us with their bad screen names and love for Kelly Clarkson.

After No One Showed Up To This Boy's 'Stranger Things' Party, Millie Bobby Brown Promised To Make It Up To Him

If there's anything pure left in this world, it's the cast of Stranger Things.

Earlier this week, Twitter user @ayenalambat tweeted that her younger brother had invited eight boys over for his Stranger Things birthday party and not one of them showed up.

According to Teen Vogue, the party had everything one could possibly need: A Stranger Things lights cake, Christmas lights adorning the walls, the show's logo splattered across everything (including the birthday boy's t-shirt!) and a red beverage (likely fruit punch) that was appropriately named "Demagorgon blood."

The tweet went totally viral and caught the attention of so many people. Other users were claiming that this time in his life is rough and that kids can be harsh. Others claimed that he should decline any invitation to the missing kids's future parties. Others tweeted in a landslide about how they would be there next year to support him with as many people as they could muster.

Also hoping to catch an invite next year? The show's cast!

Eleven herself, Millie Bobby Brown, tweeted his sister back saying, "What!!!! Oh Well You can let them all know that everyone on behalf on Stranger things would’ve come." She also said that she thought he was awesome and would like an invite next year.

But the fun didn't stop there! Seeing Brown's response, fellow star Gaten Matarazzo chimed in saying that he would bring the pudding.

And to think, no one wanted to come to this amazing party! Look how it has turned around and garnered such a huge and positive response.

Here's to hoping he has a much better birthday next year—we're sure he will.

People Are Coming For Camila Cabello After Her Air Guitar Performance On 'Ellen'& Fans Aren't Having It

Camila Cabello just released her new single "Never Be The Same," and after performing the song on Ellen this week, she's come under fire for her "strange" guitar playing. See for yourself below. It's actually pretty cringe-worthy, unfortunately.

I just don't understand what happened. She usually kills it when she performs, so what's the deal? I'm not alone in this thought, either, as Twitter users didn't hold back their feelings about her random strumming.

Though it was painful to watch, Cabello's Camilizers were quick to defend the singer, who apparently knows how to play guitar. I can't say I blame them, they have the evidence to show for it.

She may be able to play guitar, but I still want to know why it looked so strange. Maybe the sound cut out? Maybe it was intended to be a prop? I don't know. Camila might chime in to let us know what happened. All awkwardness aside, the new single is fire—and we all know she crushed those vocals, at the very least.

Just keep doing you, girl. You're crushing it despite the minor setback.

A 'Thor' Reunion Is Happening As Tessa Thompson & Chris Hemsworth Come Together For A 'Men In Black' Spinoff

Some familiar faces from Thor: Ragnarok will appear in a spinoff of Men in Black as Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson join the cast.

The film is still very much in-the-works, as there's not much information out just yet. But, we do know it's slated for a 2019 release, and it will be written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who wrote Ironman, and directed by F. Gary Gray.

Tessa has also been dropping hints on Twitter that the spinoff will feature a more female-heavy cast, which is so exciting.

The plot also remains unknown at the moment, but there have been hints relating towards a more expansive cast and storyline, according to The Hollywood Reporter."Akin to how Jurassic World revived the Jurassic Park film series, Sony's reboot is to feature new characters rather than Agents K and J, portrayed by original trilogy stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, respectively, and will build on the contemporary sci-fi world in which they operated,"THR states. "Details are being kept hidden under a New York City ventilation tower, but sources say the new project is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope."

We have a long wait to find out just how the movie will look, but I can tell you it already sounds awesome. I can't wait to see how they evolve MIB.

Student Activists At Pennridge High School In Pennsylvania Got Detention For Walking Out, But That Hasn't Stopped Them Yet

On Wednesday, March 14th, thousands of high school students across the country walked out of school in honor of the victims of the Parkland shooting. Many schools supported this walkout and even sent faculty and staff members out with the students to ensure that it was done safely. However, as the ACLU states on its website, “Because the law in most places requires students to go to school, schools can discipline you for missing class. But what they can’t do is discipline you more harshly because of the political nature of or the message behind your action.”

At Pennridge High School in Pennsylvania, the school issued a statement to families prior to the walkout telling them that the school would be holding an assembly in honor of the victims of the Parkland shooting.  According to The Morning Call, “the notice also warned that students who left school for a walkout would be doing so without permission and thus would face the normal consequences.” So 225 students at Pennridge High School decided to walk out of class anyway, even though they knew they would face consequences.

“It was against the wishes of the school board and the school administration, but we did it anyway, because we knew that we have to honor the victims,” Jayson Badal, one of the students who walked out, told Her Campus. “The best way we can honor them is to bring about change to make sure this never happens again.”  Her Campus reached out to Pennridge High School for a comment.

The 225 students who walked out received detentions, which Badal says they knew ahead of time they would receive. During the detention, the students wore Parkland victims’ names on their shirts and sat with their arms linked. They referred to the detention as “a modern sit in.”

The walkout at Pennridge High School is a perfect example of civil disobedience, which the ACLU defines as “the refusal to comply with certain laws as a form of protest.” The students knew that the school had a right to give them detention for walking out, but they decided to do so anyway to bring attention to their cause.

“We took our detention, and we gained incredible influence from that. That influence gave us such a big platform, and that platform is what we’re using to do some good,” Badal said. “It’s really inspiring to know that now we’re able to help someone to make a difference.”

Badal encourages other students across the country to be willing to take hits for what they believe in.

“If it’s important to you and you believe in it 100% and you know that this is going to make our society better, fight for it no matter what," Badal said. "And if people support you and people reaffirm that with you and you find the people who see the world the same way you do, hold onto them because they’re the people who you’re going to be with and they’re going to be awesome.”

The students at Pennridge High School will be joining the students from Parkland at the March For Our Lives on Saturday in DC.

“All we wanna do is inspire other kids so they know they can fight for what they believe in," Badal said.

5 Ways to Make (& Maintain) Connections at Your Internship

$
0
0

We’ve all heard it over and over again—making connections that will be helpful down the road is one of the most important parts of having an internship. How to actually establish and maintain these connections, though? Kind of a different story. If you’re interning this summer, it can be helpful to come up with a game plan ahead of time so you know how to form relationships with your boss and coworkers before you head into your first day at the office. Luckily, we talked to experts and collegiettes who have been there, done that, to get the scoop on being your office’s most memorable intern this summer!

1. Get friendly, but keep it professional

One of the best ways to connect with both your internship boss and other interns is easier than you think—just be your friendly, outgoing self! While you should always make sure to maintain professional relationships first, Liat Tzoubari, who has managed interns for Apartable, an apartment search website, says that being social allows interns to connect with the rest of the office on a more personal level.

“Interns often come into a workplace feeling intimidated, and there is no reason for them to feel that way,” Tzoubari says. “After all, we chose YOU! Be confident and mingle with your coworkers; it's the best way to ensure they hire you if/when interested. Grab coffee with your boss, go for lunch with your coworkers, or even just ask someone you work with if they want to go for a quick five-minute walk to get some fresh air.”

Lynn Chalati, a collegiette at the University of Ottawa and an intern at a law firm, says getting to know her manager well has allowed her make a connection beyond just a professional one.

“We make a point of getting together once a day to chit-chat and talk about the day’s work,” Lynn says. “She’s now a reference on my resume and one of my Instagram followers! It's nice to be friends and not just colleagues while still keeping it professional.”

Need some ideas for building personal relationships? Start small. When appropriate of course, stop by the desks of coworkers and people in your department to chat. Once you’ve gotten to know specific people around your office better, inviting them to coffee is also a great idea! Don’t limit it to your department, either—branch out and get to know others within the company to set yourself apart from a sea of interns!

While it’s important to remember the line between making friends and getting too personal, getting coffee with coworkers or lunch with your boss will ensure that you’re not just lost in the shuffle!

2. It’s all in the attitude

Ultimately, it all boils down to having a good attitude and being an intern that your bosses will want to connect with now and later down the road. Carlota Zimmerman, a career coach and writer for The Huffington Post, says your attitude makes all the difference.

“The best and most natural way to develop professional relationships during your internship is to be a professional worth knowing,” Zimmerman says. “That means, coming in early with a great attitude, NOT Facebooking at work—unless maintaining your company’s Facebook and social media presence is part of your responsibilities—accepting more work with good graces, and doing whatever is necessary, whatever you can do, to forward your company’s goals.”

When you go above and beyond your basic intern duties and come into the office with a positive attitude, people will notice—and will be more likely to want to get to know you and keep in touch once your internship is over. Something as small as coming in early, staying late or asking your boss what else needs to be done before you leave for the day will set you apart as an intern your company will want to hire down the road!

3. Ask for advice

Learn about your industry

Remember the saying, “There’s never a bad question?” This especially applies to your internship! It’s always a good idea to ask as many questions as you can about your industry in order to show that you are interested in learning and growing through your internship. Jeff Kear, who manages interns for his business Planning Pod, says asking questions is the best way to show interest in your internship.

“For example, interns should set up internal Q&A meetings with employees inside the organization to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of those people,” Kear suggests. “These things demonstrate the intern's interest in learning and taking on responsibilities, and they also give them extended access to people who can help them advance their career when they graduate.”

Learn about your boss’s career path

Asking your boss questions about her career path is also a great way to not only learn about how to make it yourself, but to also develop a relationship with her. Natalie Elliot, a freshman at California Lutheran University and a former Her Campus intern, says setting up a meeting to ask her boss questions about her boss’s career has allowed her to stand out among her peers.

“After my first week, I emailed my boss and told her how much I'm loving my internship so far and asked if she would have time to meet so I could ask her about starting her own business,” Natalie says. “She loved that I wanted to hear what she had to say!”

When you ask questions, not only does it show you’re super interested in your boss’s career path and the company you’re interning for, but it creates opportunities for conversation on a more personal level and shows you’re excited to learn. Bottom line: if you have a question, don’t be afraid to speak up!

4. Social media can be your best friend

Okay, so you shouldn’t be checking Facebook at work. But using social media to keep in touch, especially post-internship, is a definite do! Saniya Kahn, who just graduated from Molloy College, says that when it comes to connecting with other interns, using social media is a must.

Several interns connected on LinkedIn or Facebook and exchanged numbers and emails to keep in touch throughout the year,” Saniya says. “We all came from different backgrounds, schools, and parts of the country, but having those internship memories together helped us stay in touch long after.”

Part of making connections at your summer internship is ensuring that they’ll last beyond the three months you’ve spent as an intern! Especially when it comes to your fellow interns, don’t be afraid to start pressing that “follow” button on Twitter or to connect with them on LinkedIn—these are the people who you’ll be working with (or for!) in the future, so maintaining a relationship with them is a must!

A word of caution: when it comes to your superiors and social media, it may be a good idea to be choosy about which (if any!) platforms you use to connect with them. While LinkedIn and Twitter are usually safe bets, be careful when it comes to accounts you may not keep as professional, like Facebook. (After all, no one wants to be remembered by a former boss as the intern whose weekend debauchery showed up constantly in her news feed!)

5. Keep in touch

Once you’ve made the connection, actually staying connected with your former boss in a non-awkward way can be slightly trickier territory. Tzoubari says that a quick note to check in and give updates about your own career can make a big impact.

“Even a simple email over the holidays saying, ‘How are you? How is everyone at the office? Happy holidays to you and your family!’ with a quick update about how you are doing goes a long way,” Tzoubari says.

Saniya agrees that periodic notes and email updates have been the easiest way for her to keep in touch after her internship was over.

“Once the internship ended, I kept in touch by giving periodic updates about things like school and where I was traveling to next through email,” she says. “I also made sure to send an email wishing the people in my department that I had established those initial relationships a happy holiday season and well wishes for a happy new year.”

There’s no need to sweat when trying to connect post-internship—it’s all about the little things! Whether you send a holiday note or ask your boss to meet up for coffee, it will remind your boss and former coworkers of what great work you did as an intern and will set you up to be remembered for potential jobs down the road!

Ultimately, looking for those small opportunities to bond and connect with your boss and coworkers can have a huge impact on the connections you make during and after your internship—make them count!

6 Ways to Handle a Stressful Job or Internship

You have classes all morning, scarf down lunch before the staff meeting at 3:00 followed by answering phone calls and emails all afternoon until the fundraising event for your club at 7:00. Suddenly it’s pitch black outside, and as you finally get to sit down on your couch for the first time all day, you can’t help but feel like your work-life balance is completely out of whack. Here are some easy and effective ways to go from overworked, overwhelmed and overloaded to cool, calm and collected in the office.

Any collegiette knows that being a student while holding down a job or internship can lead to extremely jam-packed weeks. Following these six tips can help you alleviate stress, while still excelling at work and tending to your own needs.

When your job or internship has you clocking in way more hours than you signed up for, answering emails from your bed at 1 a.m. and canceling plans with your loved ones last minute, it might be time to stop and take a step back. Follow this easy and effective guide to de-stressing from your crazy job or internship to re-discover your love for your career without sacrificing your personal well-being.

1. Say yes because you want to, not because you’re available

Being the “yes” person at work always makes a great impression, but when you sign up to work whenever you have free time in your schedule, soon you may feel stretched in a million different directions. Instead, next time the boss asks who can take on the extra client they just signed, or stay an hour late to re-file paperwork, consider if it’s a task you’d actually enjoy doing or gain valuable experience from, not just if you’re schedule is open.

2. Space out your productivity

We’ve all been there: You’re making a PowerPoint for your next internship presentation, while trying to answer emails, watch some YouTube videos and stay up to date on you favorite celebrity’s Instagram story. Suddenly three hours have passed and you’ve made two slides. You’re left feeling like you worked all day, but you don’t really have anything to show for it. Instead of making your whole day semi-productive, pick a few hours to really focus on just your work assignment to get it done and then give yourself an hour of full de-stressing and relaxation. When you go to bed that night you’ll feel both accomplished and zen.

3. Rediscover your hobbies

Right now might seem like the worst possible time to add even more to your plate, but rediscovering the activities you’ve put on the back-burner to focus on work might just be the break you so need. Whether it’s baking, shopping at farmers’ markets, doing community service or taking your pooch on a hike, finding even an hour on your weekends to dedicate to your passion will allow you to feel like yourself again and fully recharged once the work week rolls around.

4. Take a technology time-out

Most jobs and internship positions require working on some sort of technology for the majority of the day. To avoid becoming an electronic zombie, try putting down the phone and laptop when you leave the office for the night. When balancing several editorial positions became too much electronic time for senior Kristin Perrone from Siena College, she learned to de-connected when she clocked out. “After coming home from my summer internship this past year, I made a point of hanging out with my family and talking to them rather than going straight to my bed and watching Netflix,” she said. “Your eyes really don’t need more exposure to a screen after a full day’s work.”

5. Consult a trusted work mentor

It’s never a good idea to bash your company or a fellow employee, but talking to someone who’s been in your shoes may give you valuable advice on how to handle all your responsibilities at work. Maybe you’re taking on a job solo that someone else at the office wants to help you with, or not using a certain system that would cut the time you spend on an assignment in half.

6. Walk it out

When it all gets too much and you feel like your head is going to explode, it’s best for you and those around you to just remove yourself from the situation for a bit. Take a 15-minute walk outside on a nice day or even on a different floor of your building to give your brain a break and your body some light exercise. You’ll come back feeling cool as a cucumber.

7. Focus on the bigger picture

When things are getting crazy, sometimes it’s best to take a step back to gain perspective. Cassidy Lawson who earned her Master of Education degree in College Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University in Virginia, now works at the Career and Academic Planning Office at JMU. From her personal experiences with multiple leadership positions, studies in graduate school and work advising students starting their careers, Cassidy suggests concentrating on the bigger picture. She recommends “focusing on what you can accomplish and how you can leave your mark in a positive way.” Instead of trying to take on every single task at work, spend time figuring out what you’re most passionate about and what skills and experiences you want to gain from your job, and prioritize your time on those projects.

Remembering to take time for yourself, ask for help, make a change when needed, and trying these tips, will help reset your work-life balance, making you a happier in the long run.

There's A Giant Floating Garbage Island That's Twice The Size of Texas & It's Pretty Frightening

It looks like the phrase "everything's bigger in Texas" is no longer true. Due at least in part to human's need to have more and bigger everything, we've created a gigantic amount of waste that's contaminating our oceans. According to scientists studying these garbage piles in the ocean, there is a floating garbage island that is now twice the size of TexasUSA Today reports.

You've probably heard of the garbage island in the middle of the ocean. However, there are multiple garbage piles accumulating in the ocean and they are probably bigger than most of us realize. These garbage piles accumulate in something called gyres, which are spots where the oceans' currents move in circles, making it the perfect gathering spot for trash to become trapped. There are five Gyres in the ocean — the North Atlantic Gyre, the South Atlantic Gyre, the North Pacific Gyre, the South Pacific Gyre and the Indian Ocean Gyre.

Last fall, environmentalists called on the United Nations to officially declare and recognize this garbage patch as a country called "The Trash Isles,"CNN reports. Nearly 200,000 individuals agreed to become citizens, including former Vice President and environmentalist Al Gore.

Adults Need To Step Up & March Because We Owe High Schoolers A Better, Safer Future

I get to spend Wednesdays hanging out with high school students as part of an after-school mentoring program. I love Wednesdays. Valentine’s Day was on a Wednesday this year, so naturally, the students asked me quite a bit about my relationship status. (It’s really not that complicated—I’m just single, but somehow that was pretty difficult for them to understand.)

Toward the end of the workshop, we were talking about food from different cultures, and I mentioned, “One time this guy gave me potato chips from India and they were so good."

“Wait!” one of the students said. “I thought you said you’ve never had a boyfriend.”

“I just said he gave me potato chips,” I said.

“Why would he give you potato chips if he wasn’t your boyfriend?” the student asked.

I was still laughing, baffled by our conversation, as I took my coat off the coat rack and walked the students out to the bus, which was waiting outside. After I hugged them goodbye and they got onto the bus, I reached into my pocket and checked my phone.

I had a notification from NBC news, which read: “At least 17 people were killed in a South Florida high school shooting. A former student is in custody.”

Think about it for a minute: What is the last interaction you had with a high school student?

Allow yourself to really take it in. Do you have a sibling in high school? What’s the last thing that he or she said to you? If you’re in high school, recall the last conversation you had with one of your classmates before you drove home from school. Close your eyes. Remember the voices, the speech patterns, the phrases that only high school students use. Keep your eyes closed until you can vividly picture the expression on that high school student’s face.

Seventeen people were murdered for going to school that Wednesday. Fourteen of them were high school students.

Evil has existed for as far back as humans can remember, but this doesn’t provide me any solace, and it certainly doesn’t provide any solace to the kids who had to watch their friends die. They were texting their parents, telling them how much they loved them and how scared they were. Can you imagine?

They took videos of the shooting, and you can watch them and hear gunshots and then screams. Kids were screaming because their friends were beside them getting murdered and they didn’t know if they were next. They hid in closets for hours as the dead bodies of their friends and teachers lay outside. They are only in high school, and they will have to live with this memory for the rest of their lives.

There is no way to reckon with this, no way to excuse this, no way to process this. This isn’t the way the world is meant to be.

I am not in policymaking. I don’t understand all the nuances of gun control. But children are being murdered in my own country, and I cannot stomach the idea of sitting back and watching this happen. The gun control debate in our country has been incredibly divisive for as long as I can remember, and neither side is perfect. I wish I had an easy answer. I wish I knew exactly what legislation needs to pass in order to prevent another school shooting without infringing upon the fundamental rights of the American people. Trust me, if I did, I would be using every platform I have to make it known.

But the reality is that this debate is far more complicated that any of us can begin to recognize, and in order to make progress, we must acknowledge that. Mass shootings are a uniquely American problem because the extent to which guns are a keystone of our culture is a uniquely American phenomenon. Would it be naive to believe that a gun buyback program like the one in Australia would work here, when Australia never had a comparable number of guns or gun supporters?

And then there’s the question of the 2nd Amendment. As soon as we no longer respect our Constitution, our country will fall apart, because the Constitution is what guarantees us the right to protest, to speak out against the government, to vote, to tell police officers they can’t come in our homes without a warrant. We must acknowledge that it also gives us the right to arm ourselves in case the government grows to be too tyrannical—which was a perfectly valid concern at the time it was written.

So what does that mean, how does it apply in today’s world, and how can we ensure that when we seek to protect the lives of the American people, we don’t somehow undermine the Constitution?

Would the same legislation that would have prevented Parkland also have prevented the shootings at Sandy Hook? What about the countless gun deaths that occur as a result of domestic violence or gang violence? How can we ensure that the NRA’s First Amendment right to lobby the government doesn’t infringe upon our inalienable right to life?

Instead of asking these difficult and complicated questions, people are covering their ears to the opposing argument. I see it on Facebook every single day. Very few people acknowledge the complexity and difficulty of this gun death epidemic facing our country. People care more about their political ideology than about saving lives.

Meanwhile, children are being murdered. So maybe it's high time to sit around a table with people you usually disagree with, and ask these difficult questions. We won’t get anything done if we continue to sit in corners with our arms folded and pout, “No! I’m right!”

Think back to those high school students that you know. These students have a legitimate fear that they will be shot and killed when they go to school. In a country where citizens have such an extensive ability to participate in the political system, there is absolutely no reason that we should accept this as fact.

Nothing I can do will mitigate the pain that the students in Parkland will have to suffer the rest of their lives. That is a reality I will never be able to process.

And yet I refuse to accept the idea that this will be a reality for countless more students in the future. The gun control debate may be messy and complicated, but it is well worth it. I promise to sit down and have these ugly conversations. I promise to exercise my right to protest, to engage in debate, to do as much research on the topic as I can.

This country was fundamentally founded upon the inalienable right to life, and the quintessential role of government is to protect this right. High school students across the country have organized a march that, at its core, exists to promote their right to live. High school students are putting in the work. They’re researching, they’re debating, they’re asking the difficult questions.

As Emma Gonzalez said in her speech, they "will be the kids you read about in textbooks." I believe she's right, because she is putting in the work that it takes to make a difference.

If I owe anything to the high school students I love so much, it’s to march for their lives. I don’t know what it will take to ensure that I never get another notification telling me that kids — just like them — were murdered, but I will not rest until we come up with something.

4 Killed By Gunman in France Hostage Situation, Including French Officer Who Swapped Places With Hostage

The hostage situation in southwestern France has come to an end after the gunman killed three people and was then killed by police officers. The gunman, identified to reporters by Interior Minister Gérad Collomb as 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim, entered the Super U in Trébes, France after hijacking a car and began shooting. Witnesses say he shouted "God is great" in Arabic and said he was acting on behalf of the Islamic State. Lakdim was from the neighboring city of Carcassonne and had a reputation as a petty criminal and drug dealer.

According to Collomb, Lakdim had "abruptly taken action" without any clear planning. "We had monitored him," said Collomb, "and we believed that he was not radicalized." Collomb also stated that Lakdim acted alone.

Retired policeman Christian Guibbert was shopping for groceries with his wife and sister-in-law when the incident occurred; he escaped through an emergency exit. Guibbert told French media that he heard gunshots and saw a "very agitated" man armed with a handgun and knife.

"He was yelling threats at people, 'everybody on the ground,'" said Mr. Guibbert. "'Allahu akbarm' yes, he yelled that several times." Mr. Guibbert then hid his family and other customers in a meat locker, called the police and escaped through an exit.

According to a bulletin issued by Amaq News Agency, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. Lakdim was described as a "soldier of the Islamic State" and the bulletin claimed the attack was a response to the group's call to action to target enemies. The language suggests Lakdim was inspired by the Islamic State but not directed by it.

According to Collomb, Lakdim first hijacked a car, killing one person and injuring another. He then came into contact with a group of police officers in Carcassonne. He shot at them, wounding one. He then drove to the supermarket and fired shots as he entered, killing two people and taking one hostage.

A 45-year-old police officer voluntarily traded places with the female hostage. The police officer, Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame with France's gendarmerie, left his phone open on a table, allowing police outside to listen to the conflict.

More gunshots were heard and the police stormed the store, fatally shooting Lakdim. According to Collomb, the lieutenant colonel was "seriously wounded" in an "act of heroism."

President Emmanuel Macron responded to the attack from a news conference in Brussels where he is attending a European Union summit meeting, saying, "We believe that it is indeed a terrorist attack."

Several French reporters claim that Lakdim was demanding the release of Mr. Abdeslam, the only surviving member of the Islamic State group that has killed 130 in and around Paris in a series of attacks since November 2015. Collomb did not confirm these reports, saying that Lakdim called for the "liberation of prisoners."

Beltrame, who bravely swapped places with the hostage, ended up succumbing to his wounds on Saturday, after being shot in the neck by the gunman, CNN reports.

"Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame died in the service of the nation to which he had already contributed so much," Macron said in a statement. "By giving his life to end the murderous escapade of a jihadist terrorist, he died a hero."

This is the first attack since the lifting of the state of emergency in France that was put in place after the November 2015 terrorist attacks. There have been no large scale attacks since one in Nice in July 2016, though several small attacks on individuals have taken place. This is also the first attack since the passing of the counterterrorism law that makes permanent some emergency measures.
