The Reason This Amazon Executive Passed on 'Big Little Lies' Is Horrifying

Eight-time Emmy winner Big Little Lies is a major success, thanks to HBO and the powerful women that brought the characters to life. Before the show found a home at HBO, Netflix, Showtime and Amazon were also pitched the miniseries, but given recent allegations against a now former Amazon executive, Roy Price, Big Little Liesis obviously better off.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Price passed on making Big Little Lies an Amazon series because he wanted more nudity from the female characters. Price reportedly said he didn't want the show unless Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon would "show their tits,"Refinery29 reports. Price supposedly discussed the show at a staff holiday party and "mused aloud why he would greenlight the show if they didn't [show their breasts]." After hearing this, it's clear Amazon wasn't the right place for Big Little Lies.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only disturbing story that's come out about Price. He was suspended, and later resigned, after he was accused of sexual harassment by Isa Hackett, an executive producer of Amazon's The Man in the High Castle. Price reportedly made crude comments and jokes and pressured Hackett for sex. Price is also close with Harvey Weinstein, who is in hot water for sexual harassment. How convenient.

Due to Price's ousting, questions are being raised about other shows whose fate Price had a say in. Anna Camp tweeted about her short-lived Amazon series, Good Girls Revolt, "He cancelled #goodgirlsrevolt a show about sexual discrimination and harassment in the workplace." Disgusting.

Though I'm thankful Big Little Lies chose a different network and has had insane success, my stomach turns at the way Price handled a show that involves serious themes like domestic abuse.

With Price gone, I hope Amazon series can live and die by their merits—not by the inclusion or exclusion of female nudity.

'This Is Us' Taught a Scarily Relevant Lesson About Racism

When This Is Usopened in a '90s video rental store this week, I was totally expecting another heartfelt storyline from the Pearsons’ past, like the washing machine episode. Although watching the family try to pick out what movie to rent was a great blast from the past, the seriousness of this particular moment in time quickly set in. When a snowstorm hit just as Kevin and Kate came down with chickenpox, Rebecca’s slightly estranged mother Janet arrived to help run the house. Cue the generational cycle of mother-daughter drama and, most importantly, Janet’s inappropriate treatment of Randall.

We caught hints of how Janet viewed Randall differently from her biological grandchildren in Season 1, but as anyone knows, being trapped in a confined space with extended family can open a pretty messy can of worms. The severity of the issue appeared here, with Janet not only giving Randall a racially stereotyped gift of a basketball, but also making comments about the other kids in ways that panned out negatively in their adulthood. She gave Kate a small dress, telling her to make it her “goal” dress, and told Kevin to avoid scratching his face because it’s basically where the money is. Grandma was way more influential than we thought, huh?

Cabin fever made its mark when Janet mused about how Randall was the only Pearson to get into private school. Rebecca snapped, calling out Janet for failing to see Randall’s efforts to be noticed, saying “the twins and Randall” as if he isn’t part of the family and even treating Rebecca’s childhood maid the harsh way she did. If there’s anything Season 2 has proven to me so far, it’s that Mandy Moore needs an Emmy nomination next year.

Just as you were probably praising Rebecca for accusing her mother of being a racist, the show revealed that Randall witnessed the entire conversation, leading to a sit-down with his parents about racism. In addition to Randall's hilarious reaction when Rebecca and Jack brought up Martin Luther King Jr. (“Did Grandma shoot him?”), the conversation was sweet, simple and scarily relevant to today’s social climate.

By teaching their son that racism can disguise itself with a nice-sounding tone, Randall became the cautious person we know him as in the present day. From telling Kevin that "I'm still black" when they were wrestling on a public street to stepping in when neighbors were suspicious of William, he's well aware of the racist subtleties that are automatically built into our society.

His parents' lesson from 1990 also rang true to the current atmosphere of the country. While the United States is more divisive than ever, it's easy for people to write off racist behaviors as a generational flaw or non-existent. But Mama and Papa Pearson encouraged Randall to be aware of these little moments that suggest something greater.

"I’m not one that would be the first to be able to give a conversation on what it is to be black and to experience racism, nor are Jack and Rebecca," said show creator Dan Fogelman in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "So they’re struggling with a complicated topic that they’re already in a difficult position to comprehend or explain in the right way…We have a really diverse writing staff and we tried to attack all viewpoints and not turn this into an afterschool special."

Having dealt with racism (and black hair in Randall's present-day storyline) so powerfully, the This Is Us team definitely succeeded in sharing this important lesson and crucial moment in the Pearsons' story.

Apparently Ivanka Trump Had a 'Punk Phase'& The Internet Is Going Nuts

Every girl goes through phases. There's the blue eyeshadow period of middle school, the prep school look and of course, the rebellious punk, among others. When you think of Ivanka Trump, you probably see poised style and sensible fashion choices, not an angsty punk rocker. But alas, according to The Cut, it was once true...kind of.

In her mother's memoir, Raising Trump, Ivanka comments on her teenage “punk phase.” She writes, "In the nineties, I was really into Nirvana. My wardrobe consisted of ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts." Sure it did, Ivanka...sure it did. She goes on to describe an incident with blue hair dye. “One day after school, I dyed my hair blue. Mom wasn’t a fan of this decision. She took one look at me and immediately went out to the nearest drugstore to buy a $10 box of Nice n' Easy. That night, she forced me to dye my hair back to blond. The color she picked out was actually three shades lighter than my natural color…and I have never looked back!"

Obviously, Twitter had some words. Users took to the platform to mock Ivanka's childhood and troll her so-called #punklife.

Some brought up the good old days of Hot Topic fashion.

While we're not quite sure just how truly "punk" Ivanka Trump was, we can certainly relate to having a weird phase here and there.

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Reportedly Had Tea With the Queen, & I'm Swooning Over the Royalty of It All

For those who are not avid watchers of the Royal Family, rumors about a possible engagement between Prince Harry and his girlfriend of just over a year, Meghan Markle, have been swirling. While nothing on the wedding front has been confirmed, we do know what the cute couple was up to last week: They were reportedly having tea with Queen Elizabeth II.

Last Thursday, the couple reportedly met with Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace and had tea in her sitting room around 5 p.m. The sit-down lasted for about an hour. According to some sources, this was the first time Harry's grandmother had officially met Meghan, although some outlets have reported that the two met this summer.

Regardless, it seems Meghan and Harry are happy and in love. I can’t imagine how nerve-racking it must be to meet the Queen of England, but I’m sure an accomplished and incredible woman like Meghan made a great impression!

George W. Bush Didn't Name Names But Low-key Came For Trump In A Speech On Patriotism

Former president George W. Bush recently gave a speech at the Bush Institute’s Spirit of Liberty event in New York. While Bush didn’t call out President Trump directly —like Trump tends to do when talking about anyone he disagrees with— many of his statements seemed to be directed against the bigotry and prejudice of Trump.

And unlike Trump’s random and largely unnecessary tweets, Bush’s statements were clear and meaningful. As Politico reports, Bush’s speech follows Senator John McCain's similar call for rediscovering American democracy just three days ago.

"We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil," McCain said. Bush’s words echoed McCain’s: “Our identity as a nation, and unlike many other nations, is not determined by geography or ethnicity, by soil or blood. Here are a few of our favorites:

In honor of liberty, Bush began by stating, “The health of the democratic spirit itself is at issue. And the renewal of that spirit is the urgent task at hand.”

“Free governments are the only way to ensure that the strong are just and the weak are valued,” he said. “When we lose sight of our ideals, it is not democracy that has failed. It is the failure of those charged with preserving and protecting democracy.” Basically, it’s all on Trump. If he fails, it’s not democracy that’s failed - it’s him.

We’re forgetting core American ideals, such as the American dream, replaced by decreased trust in our government and increased political polarization. In what seems to be a reference to Trump’s proliferation of rumors and downright false statements, Bush said: “Bigotry seems emboldened. Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication.”

America first is not American. “We have seen the return of isolationist sentiments – forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places, where threats such as terrorism, infectious disease, criminal gangs and drug trafficking tend to emerge.”

“In all these ways, we need to recall and recover our own identity. Americans have a great advantage: To renew our country, we only need to remember our values.” Our values include diversity, tolerance, and inclusivity. Making America great again means making America great for all people.

Bush also directly condemned white supremacy and the lack of positive role models in our political landscape today: “Our young people need positive role models. Bullying and prejudice in our public life sets a national tone, provides permission for cruelty and bigotry, and compromises the moral education of children. The only way to pass along civic values is to first live up to them.”

Ending on a positive note, Bush urges America to remember its core values. "The American spirit does not say, “We shall manage,” or “We shall make the best of it.” It says, 'We shall overcome.'"

Meanwhile many critics considered Bush's speech a "too-little, too-late" move after being less-than-vocal during the election. Others pointed out that many of Trump's more extreme policies and stances found their roots and gained momentum during the years of W. Bush's presidency.

Yet, it is still a bit a relief for many to hear a politician condemn the extremes of Trump-era politics

10 Ways to be Environmentally Conscious on Campus

$

It’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough to help the environment. We’ve all had that “oh no” moment when you throw away something you should have recycled or realized you turned the shower on to warm up and forgot about it. Those things don’t make you a bad person, I promise. Where do you start if you want to make a difference in the environment? What does it mean to really live an eco-friendly life, and how much of a difference can you make when you have limited space on campus?

There’s always something you can do to help. Apply some of these little changes to your life and before long you won’t even think twice about them.

1. Recycle

It seems like such a simple solution, but you’d be surprised at how many people skip over the recycling bin when it’s sitting right next to the trash can. Many colleges have what’s called single-stream recycling, which means you can throw any recyclable in the bin without having to worry about whether it counts as glass or plastic or paper. If you don’t have one already, set up a second trash bin in your room specifically for your recyclables like water bottles and cardboard boxes.

2. Buy less stuff

Look, I love online shopping just as much as the next girl, but buying excessive products is really putting a strain on the world. Yarina Valverda, the editor-in-chief of Fashionhedge, an ethical fashion blog, says, “My #1 and simplest rule is simply to buy less stuff. You can get nerdy about which fabrics and suppliers to go for, but the truth is that most people do not have the time to do research on everything they buy. Everything you buy is a signal that you send out to the world about what we want more of, so limiting mindless, unnecessary purchases could slow down the excessive production of garbage.” Everyone wants to revamp their wardrobe once fall starts to roll in, but try to work with the clothes you have to create fun, trendy outfits. It’s also the perfect excuse to borrow (or steal) some clothes from your friends’ closets, which is arguably one of the best parts of living in a dorm.

3. Think about your food

Food and food scraps play a bigger part in the buildup of waste than most people realize. In general, meat leaves a bigger carbon footprint than leafy vegetables like lettuce and spinach. Rebecca Beaulieu, a senior at the College of the Holy Cross and co-chair of the EcoAction Club, suggests participating in Meatless Mondays, or at least trying to limit your meat intake during the week by making sure you eat everything you take to reduce waste. You can even try to go vegan for a day. Keep an eye out for farmer’s markets or opportunities to buy local.

4. Be mindful of your energy use

Everyone has been there: you’re lying in bed charging your laptop, watching Netflix, and you get the notification that it’s fully charged so you pull the charger out and continue on with your binge-watching. Every lazy girlhas done it. But one of the biggest wastes of energy is leaving things plugged in when you’re not using them. Try to unplug your chargers, lamps, and fans when you aren’t using them. Other ways to cut back are to take shorter showers and make sure to pay attention to central heat or air conditioning at your school. If the heat is turned on, make sure you close your windows so the heat energy isn’t being wasted.

5. Cut back on your waste

Pay attention to the packaging your food comes in. Most times you aren’t able to control if a grab-and-go sandwich comes in a plastic container, but be conscious of how much you pick that option over something that comes with an eco-friendlier option. Opt for a reusable coffee cup or travel mug for your morning coffee and carry around a reusable water bottle to fill up throughout the day. Some colleges even let you purchase a reusable plastic container for the dining hall, a much better option than letting countless Styrofoam containers piling up. Rebecca says, “Be mindful of buying things that will just be thrown away, and pay attention to printing on both sides of the paper instead of just one.”

6. Clean up after yourself

Walk down any college campus after a wild Saturday night and you’ll be sure to find it littered with crushed cans, plastic cups, and broken bottles. This type of waste is so harmful because plastics, metals, and glass don’t decompose. It may feel like common sense, but the next time you’re out look for designated places to throw out or recycle your trash.

7. Shop smart

When you do decide to splurge on something new, do your best to shopecofriendly brands. Rebecca says, “Vote with your wallet. This means when you go to buy a new sweatshirt, do some research about where you want to buy the sweatshirt before buying from a company that uses unsustainable methods or works out of a sweat shop in India.” She suggests using the “Better World Shopper Guide” to find out if the brands you’re shopping are sustainable and eco-friendly. Valverda suggests checking out the thrift-store first, and shared that some of her favorite brands to shop are Reformation, Amur, Stella McCartney, and Maiyet. You can also check resale sites like Poshmark and eBay.

8. Skip the drive

In college, there are so many other options of transportation for the times you need to get off campus. Go for a walk with friends instead of driving; it’s a great way to get to know the community surrounding your college. Take the bus or subway if that’s available. It’s cheaper than gas so it will save the environment and your wallet. If you do need to drive, carpool with friends or use ride-sharing apps.

9. Save paper

It’s so easy to cut down on your paper use, but lots of people throw away a scrap without a second thought. Always try to print on both sides of a piece of paper, even pieces of scrap paper and fliers you come across during the day. If you’re able to, take notes on a laptop or tablet during class, and if you can’t make sure to completely fill a piece of paper before starting a new one. If you have to turn in hard copies of essays or assignments, use the backs of them to take notes when you get them back.

10. Get educated and get involved

Find out about your school’s policies on sustainability. If you don’t like what you see, get involved and get your voice heard! Most schools will have some iteration of an environmental club (like Eco-Action at Holy Cross, which Rebecca co-chairs). Start going to meetings and find out what they’re doing to live a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. Find out about local community initiatives that you can get involved with, like beach clean-ups if you live near the coast or volunteering at animal sanctuaries.

Halloween only comes once a year (unfortunately), and you're probably going to spend it with your whole squad, so why not coordinate an awesome AF costume theme for your group? Don't worry if your squad isn't the most creative bunch—we've got you covered with the best co-ed group costumes this year.

1. Archer

Bringing the animated to reality.

2. Riverdale

If someone in your group isn't down to dress up as Archie and the whole crew, then are they really your friend?

3. The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead group costume is the perfect group costume compromise for those lazy AF people who just wanna throw on a cowboy hat and put some gauze on their eye to become Carl (pronounced Coral). Plus, it appeases those extra people in your group who want to spend hours in the bathroom, pretending that they're an FX makeup artist, to look sort of like a zombie.

4. All the People Trump’s Fired So Far

Or you could go as Trump’s current cabinet, just with a Survivor theme to your costumes. After all, political humor is the sexiest Halloween costume you can wear.

5. The X-Men

While the Justice League might be trending right now with the movie and all, every secret superhero enthusiast knows that the X-Men are the most BA group of crime fighters.

6. The Ghostbusters Squad

Show all those ghosts and ghouls that y'all aren't afraid of no ghosts.

7. Fast Food Chains

It's the perfect idea for salty friend groups.

8. All of Taylor Swift's Alter Egos

Rock Taylor’s infamous curly locks and red lipstick from 2009 or her current look as a snake goddess.

9. Condiments

Whether you want to strut to your Halloween bar crawl as ketchup, mustard, mayo and hot sauce or go as the whole summer BBQ (including the adorable hot dog) is entirely up to your crew.

10. Pokémon

While Pokémon Go might be irrelevant, everyone loves Pokémon (if you don’t, you’re just lying to yourself). You and your friends could go as members of Team Rocket, or if you're a bunch of lazy guys and gals, you could forego the hassle of DIY-ing and get some comfy Pokémon onesies.

11. Emojis

It's the ideal costume theme for any tech-savvy collegiette. The real question is if you're sobbing face or laugh-crying face.

12. Trump's Tweets

Because nothing is scarier than Trump's Twitter feed. Spooky.

13. Powerpuff Girls and the Rowdyruff Boys

Who wouldn't want to dress as their favorite bubbly crime fighters?

14. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Sorry, Hulk—we all know Gamora is the baddest green superhero.

15. Kim Possible Characters

While all those Insta-couples will be glammed up as Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable, your crew will be filled with Shegos, Bonnies and Dr. Drakkens.

16. The Office

Because there's so much more than an endless parade of Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly costumes.

17. Games of Thrones Characters

Just don't fight over who gets to be the Mother of Dragons. There are plenty of other GoT costumes you can nail.

18. Futurama

After all, there's always a Zoidberg in the group.

19. Disney Princesses and Princes

It's the perfect group costume idea if your friend group is literally filled with couples (or if you just want to torment your besties who are crushing on each other).

20. The First Family

Whether you want to dress up as Ivanka Trump or Donnie, it’s surprisingly easy to look like the Trump clan. First, get gussied up in your most ridiculously expensive clothes (knockoffs are acceptable). Second, sell your soul to Nixon’s ghost. Then, profit from all the Halloween costume contests you enter.

21. Skeletons

After all, the skeleton is a Halloween fashion that never dies.

22. Game of Thrones Dragons

Seriously, dragons are better than mermaids anyway.

23. Rugrats

After all, the diapers will come in handy if the restroom lines are extra long. Just don't fight too much about who gets to be Reptar.

24. Taco Bell Sauces

Because how else will anyone know your love for Taco Bell's fire sauce and their fire new clothing line

25. The Royal Family

Who wouldn't want to wear one of the queen's extravagant monochromatic outfits?

26. Star Wars

Between the eight Star Wars movies, the possibilities are practically endless.

27. The Incredibles

Because a skin-tight, red-and-black bodysuit will make it easier for your drunk ass to find your friends in a crowded bar.

28. Power Rangers

Because we should still be celebrating that epic 2017 movie.

29. The Stranger Things Kids

The perk of dressing up as Eleven is you can carry around Eggo waffles all night (so you don't get too hangry).

30. Grey’s Anatomy

Because f--k being sexy nurses—sexy doctors are way better.

31. Baywatch

Dressing as a Baywatch babe is the closest I'll ever get to Zac Efron.

32. A Six Pack

Dressing up as the bottom top shelf of a bar is seriously dated, which is why dressing up as a six pack (or 24 pack) of Natty Light is much classier.

33. Cards Against Humanity

Better yet, wear a few giant cards so everyone at your Halloween party can play a round of life-sized Cards Against Humanity.

34. Bob's Burgers

After all, Tina Belcher is goals.

35. La Croix Flavors

Step up your basicness and dress up as your favorite drink (that isn't served with a green straw and extra whipped cream).

36. Snapchat Filters

If you all use Fenty beauty products, then you'll even get that flawless glow that Snapchat filters use to hide your face demons, pores and RBF.

37. Westworld

The flies in your Dolores and Teddy costumes are optional.

Taylor Swift Reportedly Said No to Appearing on Karlie Kloss's New TV Show, So True Friendship Must Be Dead

Back in the prime days of Taylor Swift's Instagram-famous squad, it was well documented news that one of the star's closest BFFs was model Karlie Kloss. There were hints of the two's friendship fizzling out when Karlie's name didn't appear on Taylor's "Look What You Made Me Do" shirt alongside other friends' names, but now there may be more truth behind the rumor. Cosmopolitan reports that Taylor has reportedly turned down an offer to appear on Karlie's latest TV project. She wasn't kidding about being a new Taylor, huh?

Karlie announced via Twitter this week that her shortform show Movie Night with Karlie will debut on Freeform this December. Accompanying the announcement were photos of guest stars such as Kendall Jenner and Ashley Graham with Karlie.

The show is described as Karlie and her gang watching films while baking and playing games. Reports of Taylor declining a guest appearance trace back to The Blastwhich cites "scheduling issues" as the reason why she couldn't stop by the set. Given the fact that her Reputation album drops in November, this could be a totally truthful, innocent excuse. However, after Karlie's snub from that infamous T-shirt, Swifties may have some concerns about this news. After all, the Taylor we all know and love probably wouldn't turn down a reason to bake, right?

Although I hope the girls are just busy with their own careers at the moment, Karlie's show does sound like fun. Movie Night with Karlie is scheduled to premiere on December 28.

Trump Gave Himself a Literal 10/10 on His Response to Hurricane Maria

Puerto Rico's recovery efforts following Hurricane Maria are still ongoing, and the tension between the island's government and President Donald Trump hasn't exactly made the process any easier. After accusing San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz of "poor leadership," lightheartedly tossing paper towel rolls at hurricane victims while visiting the island and telling officials that Puerto Rico "threw our budget a little out of whack," Trump definitely hasn't made the greatest impression on the still suffering victims. Despite not picking up on proper social cues during tragedy, Trump said that, on a scale of one to 10, he would rate his response to Hurricane Maria a 10, HuffPost says.

"I'd say it was a 10," Trump said at a White House event with Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. "I give ourselves a 10...We have provided so much, so fast. We were actually there before the storm hit."

Although the president seems optimistic about Puerto Rico's status, statistics prove differently. After the entire island lost power due to the storm, government data reports that about 80 percent of residents still don't have power over a month later, while 30 percent don't have drinking water. There's even a possibility that these figures are actually higher, as volunteer workers in Puerto Rico claim that the reality of the situation is much worse.

Gov. Rosselló didn't comment directly on Trump's rating, but when Trump asked him if the United States did a "great job," Rosselló said, "You responded immediately, sir...We recognize that there are some logistical limitations that we have in Puerto Rico...A lot still has to be done."

Trump also stirred some feathers by saying that he believed Hurricane Maria was far worse than Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Speaking to reporters, he said, "It was, in many ways, worse than anything people have ever seen."

In response to the president's thoughts on Katrina, HuffPost pointed out that while at least 45 people have died as a result of Maria, over 1,000 died from Katrina.

Although any chance of Trump lowering his own rating of helping Puerto Rico is likely slim, we'll have to wait and see if his administration continues trying to provide substantial aide.

Leonardo DiCaprio Was Considered for the Lead in 'Hocus Pocus,' but Was Just Too Busy to Commit

Despite the news that Disney Channel is planning a Hocus Pocus remake, I've still allowed myself to get excited over marathoning the original Hocus Pocus this Halloween season. As far as I'm concerned, the movie is perfect as is, but there's now reason to believe it could have been even better. Director Kenny Ortega revealed to Entertainment Weekly that even though he wasn't available to film the movie, a young Leonardo DiCaprio met with him about playing the film's teenage lead Max. Um, mind blown.

"[The casting ladies] said, 'We're sending you an actor today but he's not available but you're going to fall in love with him but you can't have him,'" Ortega revealed in a chat about the movie's history. "They were like, 'You need to see this guy because he'll inspire you and if nothing else, he'll help you find the right guy to play Max.'"

If I had the chance to meet a pre-Titanic DiCaprio, I'm pretty sure I'd fall in love with him too. Ortega certainly wasn't immune to the young actor's charms. "He's just the most sincere and most centered and a wild child at the same time," he said.

DiCaprio was ultimately unavailable for the role because he was in consideration for roles in This Boy's Life and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and even felt awkward about meeting Ortega when they both knew the discussion was futile.

"Obviously, he left and incredible things happened for that young man," Ortega said. "But meeting him awakened me to the kind of spirit and fun and sincerity that I was looking for in an actor and when Omri Katz came around, I fell in love again and he was our Max."

Although DiCaprio's career obviously didn't suffer from turning down the role, fans are understandably intrigued by what could have been. I mean, we could all use a seasonal DiCaprio movie in our lives, right?

Count me in as someone fascinated by this story. Although we have plenty of films to catch DiCaprio in all of his '90s beauty,

10 Signs You're Getting Too Old to Trick-Or-Treat

$
0
0

We've all had that final year of trick-or-treating where we know when we leave the house in our PG-13 costumes, it'll be for the last time. But how do you know when that year should be? Your senior year in high school? When you turn eighteen? How about when you're twenty-one? Below are the tell-tale signs it's time to start handing out the candy instead of asking for it!

1. You can't get your costume at Walmart anymore.

Usually, we hit a certain age where it doesn't matter what we dress up as. We just want a cheap costume so we can get as much candy as possible without spending a lot of money. Once you're too big for those $24.99 princess costumes at Walmart or Target, it's time to retire the trick-or-treat bag.

2. You have to start avoiding certain houses.

As a kid, you don't know or really care who lives where. But once you start having to avoid that one house around the corner because your ex lives there, we recommend you shut it down.

3. Your costume involves a tight dress and some form of animal ears.

The second you stop wearing kid-friendly costumes and start buying short dresses to mimic a Playboy bunny, don't even bother going door-to-door. Because mothers around the neighborhood probably won't be on board with your costume.

4. You'd rather drive around than walk.

Part of the trick-or-treat charm is walking door-to-door! Being exhausted but knowing you're tired because of that pillowcase full of Reese's is so worth it. When you decide you'd happily trade in your walking shoes for your car, it's time to drive to a party instead.

5. You worry too much about the calories.

That's really how you know you're too old to get the candy—when you care too much about how it affects your health.

6. You reminisce about the times when you got the good candy.

Because that was all that mattered when you were in middle school.

7. You can buy alcohol for yourself.

Time to just drink wine and hand out the candy at this point, ladies!

8. Pre-gaming is somehow part of your plan.

Drunk trick-or-treating probably isn't the best thing to do since cars and street lights are involved.

9. You don't get the costumes kids are wearing.

Once you're out of the loop with kids' costumes, leave the trick-or-treating to them!

10. You've tried every candy corn flavored alcoholic drink you can get your hands on.

Just no.

It's sad when we're no longer young enough to get free candy - but think about the things we can do now. Like, going to bars in costume and getting into scary, haunted attractions. Make Halloween enjoyable and buy your own candy if need be!

HC Wake-Up Call: Ann Arbor Officials #TakeAKnee, John Kelly Defends Trump's Call With Military Widow & Starbucks Holiday Cup Is Accidentally Revealed

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

#TakeAKnee Hits City Council

During a City Council meeting in Ann Arbor, Mich., four of the 11 elected members knelt down during the Pledge of Allegiance. The officials are not the only City Council members to do so—16 New York City council members knelt in front of City Hall in September, while more than a dozen knelt during the Pledge in a San Diego council meeting earlier this month.

"For me it is a position of great respect," said kneeling official Chuck Warpehoski. "Taking a knee today was a chance to give attention and hope and prayer that the words of our Pledge of Allegiance 'liberty and justice for all' would be fulfilled."

John Kelly Defends Trump's Call to a Soldier's Widow

In response to the controversy surrounding claims of what President Trump said to a fallen soldier's widow, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly defended the president's call in a briefing room appearance on Thursday. He chastised Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson for listening into friend and military widow Myeshia Johnson's call with the president, saying, "It stuns me that a member of Congress would have listened in on that conversation...And I thought at least that was sacred." He compared Wilson's actions to a nationwide loss of respect towards women, life and religion.

Kelly is particularly tied to this upset because he lost his own son in battle in 2010. Seemingly in response to Trump allegedly telling Johnson that her husband "knew what he signed up for," Kelly shared his personal experience of losing a family member active in the military, saying, "He knew what he was getting into by joining that one percent. He knew what the possibilities were because we were at war."

This Year's Starbucks Holiday Cup Design May Have Accidentally Been Revealed

Thanks to a Reddit user sharing a photo of a festive-looking cup recently received in a Starbucks order, we have a potential spoiler about what 2017's holiday cups look like. Anyone who considers themselves a coffee drinker probably understands how seriously some people take the annual design, which has changed around in recent years, but this artwork definitely looks like it could win over any critics! Whether or not this is the actual design, the holiday cups are due to come out in early November.

I’m More Sexually Satisfied While Single—Here’s Why

$

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

For some reason, there’s some weird stigma about single women either being sex-deprived, desperate or complete f**king nymphos. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying casual sex, some of us just don’t want casual sex right now. Thankfully, us single gals don’t necessarily need another person to have a fulfilling sex life.

As someone who’s perpetually single AF, but who also loves sex, I’m a master at satisfying myself sexually. In fact, I’ve been more sexually satisfied in my last three years of singledom, than I’ve been in any relationship, and here’s why.

1. I just focus on myself

While pleasing someone else can be sexually liberating, focusing on my own sexual pleasure obviously makes me feel more satisfied. Plus, I don’t have to fake my orgasms anymore or worry about that awkward, mid-sex dirty talk. (Unless you count me yelling at my vibrator because its batteries died mid-climax as dirty talk.)

Masturbation is key to your sexual satisfaction, but not that same old mundane routine you do before bed (because every girl should have a solid bedtime routine). Masturbation should extend past using your trusty fingers all the time. That’s right, it’s time to use your single woman status to experiment with sex toys. Trying different sex toys can help you learn more about your own body— what turns you on, what doesn’t and what’s best left for special occasions. While the online sex toy selection can be intimidating (and costly, seeing as you can’t really return a toy you don’t like) for a first-time sex toy shopper, you can easily go to your local sex toy shop and ask for help. Don’t be intimidated— the shop employees are literally there to help you, so use them as a resource.

Once you find what sex toys (or lack thereof) work for you, then you can focus on pleasing yourself without having to worry about any sex-related issues or questions from your nonexistent partner.

2. There's no pressure

Seriously, I don’t have to worry about having sex with another person. I get it, sex is supposed to be this magical bond between you and another person (or three). But let’s face it, most people have some form of sex-related anxiety.

While casual hookups used to be my thing, they’re now just draining. I used to have to plan a one-night stand seven business days in advance because I subconsciously felt the need to wax my entire body and paint my face with makeup, just to impress some guy who’s going to spend thirty minutes struggling to find my clit anyway. Although I generally feel more comfortable with my female suitors because they know the struggle of getting ready for a date (albeit a sex-date), it’s still tiresome to spend time on getting to know a new sexual partner and their sexual (and emotional) needs and desires, just so you can selfishly get off.

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I know that I don’t want or need the pressure of dealing with another person in the bedroom (or on the kitchen counter) when I’m single. Because I’m single, I still have the option to have a one-night stand or find an FWB.

3. Sexting

Sexting is one of my most provocative past times. And I’m not talking about the “sexting” where that one frat boy snaps you asking for nudes at 3:01 a.m. Honestly, just sexting is far more erotic than any nude, porn or awkward five minutes of “bliss" to me. Unless of course, the person you’re texting still hasn’t figured out the difference between “you’re and your,” in which case you need to drop that person ASAP, because grammar is sexy AF.

I get it. I just spent six paragraphs in the last section explaining why casual hookups aren’t my thing anymore, so how on earth do I find people to sext?

Don’t worry, I don’t just type a random number into my phone and start sexting away (but maybe that’s why I’ve been single for the last three year). Instead, I approach people who I already trust. Thankfully, I have a couple former f**kbuddies who enjoy a good sexting sesh. Granted, they’ve moved several hundreds of miles away (probably to avoid me), so there’s minimal risk that they’ll nag me about DTRing or hanging out. If you don’t have a trusted former lover on the backburner, see if one of your single friends would be interested in some late-night sexting. After all, if you’re close friends with them, then you should feel comfortable enough to at least discuss this proposition.

Regardless, healthy sexting can help you learn more about yourself and how you can satisfy yourself, both sexually and emotionally. Yes, I said emotionally because sexting isn’t just about virtually stripping each other’s clothes off and getting into it. There’s still some form of emotional connection attributed to the act. Not to mention, regular sexting can help you develop your vocabulary and become a more imaginative writer. Who knows, maybe you could become the next E.L. James?

Whether you choose to sext, have a one-night stand or buy every sex toy in your local sex shop, you shouldn’t feel pressured into seeking a relationship to feel truly sexually satisfied. After all, exploring the best way to sexually satisfy your single-self is key to truly figure out your sexual needs and being comfortable with your single status. Otherwise, how are you going to expect someone else to please you, when you’re still figuring out all your kinks and quirks?

'Happy Death Day' Star Israel Broussard on Making a Horror Film That's Relatable to College Students

Happy Death Day is not your typical horror movie. Sure, you might jump or scream out of fear, but mostly you’ll be laughing or hanging on to the edge of your seat in suspense. The Universal Studios film, which was released Oct. 13, focuses on a sorority girl named Tree who gets killed on her birthday. She then wakes up and relives the same day over and over again, dying every time.

Tree tries to figure out who is killing her and why—all she knows is it’s a creepy hooded person with a baby mask. After being killed by everything from a shattered bong to a knife stab, she wakes up day after day in a dorm room that belongs to Carter, a helpful college guy.

Israel Broussard, who plays Carter in Happy Death Day, was initially drawn to the film because of the fun script and relatable character he portrays. He really likes Carter because he’s homey and “overall just a good kid. I kind of wanted to attack that role and see what I could do with it,” Israel tells Her Campus.

Since the plot is similar to the movie Groundhog Day, Israel says he was skeptical at first. “I wasn’t sure what I was about to get into, but when I read the script, it actually had a lot of humor, had some heart, had some suspense and it had some horror,” Broussard says. “So I feel like it was a big package.”

The 23-year-old actor grew up in Mississippi before Hollywood agents discovered him in 2008. He moved to Los Angeles and has since starred in Flipped and The Bling Ring. Now he’s acting alongside Jessica Rothe, who plays Tree in Happy Death Day.

But Israel actually isn’t a horror or slasher fan himself. “That was another thing that was interesting about doing this, though, because I wanted to know how a horror film is made because I’ve always been turned off by them,” he says with a laugh. Broussard watched It when he was 11 years old—needless to say, it scared him for a long time, turning him away from the genre. “But then I saw Paranormal Activity, which I liked because there wasn’t anything too gory or there’s not like a devilish face popping out at you.” He also enjoyed the suspense in The Strangers. “I love stuff like that. But when it comes to horror like Saw or TheTexas Chainsaw Massacre, I can’t handle stuff like that.”

Happy Death Day, however, incorporates more humor, with references along the lines of, “What does my tuition even go toward?” when the electricity goes out in the sorority house, or when two sorority sisters say “byeee” to each other in an annoying, nasally voice. Israel likes that the comedy really appeals to our younger generation. “I feel like it doesn’t take itself too seriously,” he says. “It was important to us on set if there was a line that just didn’t click with our generation, it wasn’t going to go in.” Since the movie takes place at a college, the team wanted to keep it natural and relatable. “That’s kind of where we went with the stereotypes. We generalize a lot with this movie, but at the same time the stereotypes kind of have this center around them that I think everybody can relate to a little bit."

Israel’s favorite scenes to film took place in Carter’s dorm room, where every day in the film begins. He liked establishing the characters. “We knocked that out first so I feel like that’s when everything started clicking,” he says. However, filming in the dorms was a little tedious because the dorm room was a set, so they took one wall down and switched to the other. Even though the film repeats the same day, same outfits and same sequences, Broussard says they kept it original during every scene and take. “It was actually a lot easier than anticipated, creating each new day because naturally when somebody responds different, so do you,” he explains. “We knew what our guideline was, we knew what we had to say, but we had room to spice it up a little bit, and we had fun with that.”

And Israel didn’t have too much trouble getting into character for Happy Death Day because he’s also a little timid like Carter. “Carter is kind of painted as the good guy in this film. He’s got his shy flaws and whatnot, but he doesn’t have the narcissistic tendencies like a lot of the other characters do—which I think everybody’s got a little ego in them. I think Carter is even almost a little too good to be true, but for the most part, he’s the one I’d relate to the most. I like being respectful to people. I don’t like imposing myself on anyone else. I am shy. So with those aspects, I can relate to him.”

While we’re all laughing and screaming our way through Happy Death Day, Israel will be working on other films. He's starring in Extinction, which is about a dad having recurring nightmares about his family. “Next thing you know there’s aliens coming and annihilating him, and it’s the story of him trying to figure out how to save his family and where the dreams are coming from. It’s a really cool story.”

Also on the horizon is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, based on the 2014 YA novel of the same name, about a girl’s love letters being exposed. “We just finished filming that in Vancouver in July. That was a fun set,” he says. “I saw a rough cut of it, and it’s a lot of fun. I really hope the fans enjoy it.”

Between aliens, romance and horror, it looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of Israel. Both Extinction and To All the Boys I've Loved Before are set to be released in 2018.

Happy Death Day is in theaters now.

Be Prepared & Have a Backup Plan with Plan B One-Step®

The below article has been syndicated to Her Campus from The Bostonista. In her piece, Kara Weymouth explores the lack of knowledge students have surrounding emergency contraception, and communicates why filling in those gaps of information is crucial for college students and adults alike. Read below for her thoughts on Plan B One-Step®. Read the full post here.

This is a sponsored post by Plan B One-Step®

Way back when I was a freshman in college, I remember sitting in a clinic with a friend as she tearfully pleaded for a prescription for emergency contraception. It was the spring of 2004 and emergency contraceptive pills weren’t yet available over-the-counter, even for an 18-year-old adult. At the time, it was a murky topic. My friends and I knew that it was available (somewhere) and that it worked (somehow) but that was it. That was all we really knew. We relied on word of mouth and the opinions and experiences of the other women on our dormitory floor.

"You have to take it immediately afterward," one girl advised. "No way, it works up to two weeks later, because you have to see a doctor first!" another argued. "I think it causes a....you know," someone whispered. "No way, it just kills the sperm!" Basically, we were all pretty clueless, and none of those responses were accurate.

Today, over a decade later, information about Plan B One-Step® is much more readily available. Still, when Teva Women's Health sponsored a survey conducted by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University to gauge college student's knowledge and attitudes toward emergency contraception in 2016, they found some students knew few of the basic facts when it comes to over-the-counter (OTC) emergency contraception*. In my opinion, that means it's time for all of us (college students and adults alike) to get schooled on Plan B One-Step® together!

Plan B One-Step® is the first FDA-approved emergency contraceptive to be available over the counter. It contains levonorgestrel, the same hormone used in many birth control pills—just at a higher dose. It should not be used as regular birth control because it is not as effective. That said, Plan B One-Step® is a backup plan that helps prevent pregnancy when used as directed and taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner it's taken, the better it works. If you have any questions about whether you should take Plan B One-Step®, you should ask a healthcare professional and only use it as directed.

When used as directed, Plan B One-Step® helps prevent nearly 7 out of every 8 potential pregnancies. The sooner it's taken, the better it works. Plan B One-Step® is not an abortion pill. It will not work if you are already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy. It is not intended for routine use because it is not as effective as regular birth control methods. It does not protect you against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Of course, most of us are more likely to ask a friend than to call a doctor or a pharmacist with an embarrassing question. Just recently, a friend asked me, "How often can I take Plan B One-Step®?" Neither of us wanted to ask the pharmacist in case she judged us for possibly making a mistake more than once! But we still didn't know the answer!

I realized that we shouldn't be embarrassed or fear judgment. Neither my friend nor I had done anything wrong. My friend and her boyfriend had used their regular contraceptive and it failed. Life happens! Seeking out emergency contraception is the responsible course of action! My friend knew she was at risk of pregnancy, and she's not in a place in her life where motherhood makes sense yet. And that's okay!

So, I swallowed my nerves and fear of judgment and with Plan B One-Step® in hand, I approached the pharmacist. You know what? Instead of being shamed for needing Plan B One-Step®, she reassured us. You can use it when you need it, but it should never replace regular methods of birth control because it is not as effective as using a regular birth control method correctly and consistently. You should always use it as directed, she explained. She let us know that Plan B One-Step® must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure to help prevent pregnancy. The sooner it's taken, the better it works. My friend purchased Plan B One-Step® and a bottle of water, and took it immediately. I even bought a dose to have in my own medicine cabinet, just in case.

Some women may experience side effects, such as a period that is lighter, heavier, early or late; nausea; lower abdominal pain/cramps; tiredness; headache; dizziness; breast tenderness; and vomiting.

Plan B One-Step® can usually be found in the family planning aisle at many retail stores when you need it—without a prescription or ID, and with no age restriction. I feel empowered, knowing that I already have it should I need it. If you need it, a $10 coupon and mobile rebate are available at www.PlanBOneStep.com to help you save on Plan B One-Step®.

The point is, whatever your reason for choosing emergency contraception, there is nothing to be ashamed of when you're making informed decisions! I'm proud of my friends (and, in all honesty, myself) for knowing what was best at the time. Seriously, we all need a backup plan at some point in our lives and I’m so happy that Plan B One-Step® is here when we need it!

10 Easy Halloween Costumes You Can Make With Things You Already Own

$

Dressing up for Halloween is undoubtedly fun, but doing so can take a lot of effort. If you’re feeling lazy this year, don’t let that stop you from going out and having a great night! There are plenty of costumes that require nothing more than things you can find around your dorm, sorority house or apartment. Get ready to dig through your closets because we’ve got some of the best (and easiest!) costumes right here.

1. Miley Cyrus

While many people have dressed up as the twerk-crazy Miley Cyrus when she performed at the 2013 VMAs, it’s super easy to wear one of her everyday outfits as a costume.

No matter what she’s wearing, it’s always full of color. Simply open up your closet, look for your brightest top and pair it with a non-matching skirt. Or head over to Goodwill and start hunting for '80s-inspired jackets, dresses, etc. Add in a pair of sneakers and crazy accessories, and you’re done! Don’t forget to stick your tongue out all night, too.

2. Tourist

With Hawaiian-themed parties always happening, you or one of your friends is bound to have a button up flower shirt. If not, these are easily found at Goodwill or other thrift shops!

You’ll also need any combination of the following: a fanny pack, sunglasses, a visor, a map tucked into your waste and an old camera around your neck. By no means do you need all of these accessories, but if you can round up most of them by digging around your house, go for it!

3. Barden Bella

Did somebody say Pitch Perfect? This costume is super easy to piece together, and everyone will know what you’re referencing!

For this, grab a navy fitted jacket or blazer, and a white collared shirt to wear underneath. You’ll also need a navy skirt. The outfit is, of course, incomplete without the signature scarf tied around your neck, so grab a yellow or blue one. Wear any pair of short heels and your hair in a bun, and you’re officially a Bella.

4. Runaway bride

This costume is almost too easy to put together, and you’ll be comfortable all night.

Find your favorite little white dress for the focus piece. You probably won't have a veil, but if you really want one, they’re cheap and easy to make. Throw on your sneakers, and for those ladies looking to go the extra distance, you can make a marathon bib with paper and markers. That’s pretty much it for this costume!

5. Mary Poppins

If you thought the runaway bride costume sounded easy, you’re going to love this one. Everything you need to be Mary Poppins can definitely be found somewhere among your belongings.

For starters, you’ll need to pull your hair up—whether or not you want to add a black hat is up to you. Wear a crisp, white button-up, a black skirt, and black tights. To make your costume a little more unique, you could add the red bow tie. You’re going to need Ms. Poppins' black umbrella and carry-all tote, regardless, though!

6. Lorde

Due to her distinct, goth look, Lorde is the perfect simple Halloween costume. This one is especially fun because you can get creative with it!

If there’s one part of Lorde's look you'll never see her without, it’s her dark lipstick. A maroon or wine colored shade is spot-on. She almost always wears black, so choose from an LBD or another dark outfit. Braid your hair back as she typically does, throw on some chunky black boots and voilà!

7. Risky Business

Who would’ve thought that Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear would become such a long-lasting collegiette costume tradition?

Throw on a white button-up shirt that’s long enough to wear without pants. Be sure to have on spandex or athletic shorts underneath, though. Forget shoes—all you need are some mid-calf socks. Add in a pair of black sunglasses and get ready to slide into whatever party you’re going to.

8. “A” from Pretty Little Liars

While you might be mistaken for a burglar, there’s no better way to pay tribute to one of the greatest shows ever.

Black pants, a black hoodie, black gloves—that’s pretty much it. However, since we now know that (spoiler alert) CeCe is A, you can add little twists to make this costume more fun. For example, if you don’t already have blonde hair, use a wig! Curl your hair and add some red lipstick, too. To make this a little more distinctive, you could use red masking tape and put an “A” on your back!

9. Flower child

We know you have a flower headband somewhere, so break it out and get ready to embrace your inner hippie!

Though you can wear pretty much anything from places like Urban Outfitters, try to find something in your closet that’s full of fringe or decked out in flowers. A dress is ideal, but you could also wear printed flared pants or jeans. Your look won’t be complete without you throwing out a peace sign, so be sure to do so!

10. Straight Outta T-shirts

Straight Outta Compton was one of the biggest movies last year, and it turns out there's plenty of ways to spoof its title.

Sure, you could buy pre-made shirts, but where's the fun in that? Making your own—with funny phrases like Straight Outta the Library, Straight Outta Class or Straight Outta [insert name of popular building on your campus here]—is easy to do with a pack of plain tees and fabric pens or Sharpies. Plus, you'll earn respect if you keep the references specific to inside jokes at your school.

Just when you thought you were going to stay in and watch scary movies while your friends had fun without you, you’ve been saved. These costumes require hardly any effort but are still super cute. Happy hunting!

Ariel Winter Is Almost Unrecognizable In Her Latest Magazine Shoot

Ariel Winter truly revamped Hollywood glam during her recent appearance on the cover of LaPalme magazine, and we're not mad about it at all.

The 19-year-old Modern Family star slayed in a bright-red, form-fitting dress, complete with the ~deepest~ V-neckline and textured puffed sleeves that scream old '80s fashion. Her voluminous, jet-black bangs along with a subtle metallic lip grant Winter a sophisticated look that still sports her own body boldly. We almost didn't recognize her at first, but goodness is this look good

The tagline, "Ariel Winter: Living By Her Own Rules" is especially interesting as it speaks to Winter's push-back toward the public's sometimes negative view of her body. Winter has run into her fair share of issues regarding body image, but despite the controversies, she's managed to keep her head held high and stay poised against absurd criticisms. The rest of the feature highlights Winter in clothing that showcases her own tastes for the classic and sophisticated. Check out the rest of Winter's photos in LaPalme magazine, right here!
