HC Wake-Up Call: Las Vegas Shooting Timeline May Be Incorrect, NFL Thinks 'Everyone Should Stand'& Deadly California Wildfires

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

The Timeline of Events During the Las Vegas Shooting Might Be Incorrect

More than a week after a deadly shooting that killed 58 and wounded nearly 500 people, BuzzFeed News reports that MGM Resorts, the company that owns the Mandalay Bay hotel from which the shooter fired shots onto the crowd at Route 91 Harvest music festival, is disputing the timeline of events that's been widely accepted by authorities. In a statement made on Tuesday by a spokesperson for MGM Resorts, the company said that the current timeline of what happened on October 2, "may be incorrect."

Meanwhile, on Monday, Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo revised details about the night of the shooting, saying a security guard in the hotel was shot before the shooter opened fire into the crowd below, instead of after the shooting began, as authorities had previously believed. If the new timeline is true, many are wondering why it took authorities so long to reach the shooter and whether the hotel immediately informed police that a security guard had been shot.

The Commissioner of the NFL Says 'Everyone Should Stand' During the National Anthem

In response to recent controversy surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement saying, "everyone should stand" during the national anthem, The Huffington Post reports.

"The current dispute over the national anthem is threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country," Goodell said in a letter that was sent to all 32 NFL teams.

The commissioner barely made references to the reasons (a.k.a. police brutality against people of color), that many players are kneeling, instead vaguely referring to them as "critical social issues."

Wildfires Have Killed 17 People in Northern California

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds have been injured after wildfires spread across at least 52,000 acres of Northern California beginning on Sunday night, The New York Times reports. An estimated 2,000 buildings have been completely destroyed by the fires, and as of Tuesday, at least 17 large wildfires were still believed to be burning. Authorities said that many of the fires spread so quickly that there wasn't enough time to give evacuation notices, and many were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night. 200 people are still reportedly missing.

What to look out for...

Friday the 13th is this Friday — and considering it's October, it's going to be an extra spooky one, making it the perfect excuse to indulge in a PSL or finally get ahead on picking a halloween costume.

Mensa Is Offering To Help Trump & Tillerson Have an IQ Face Off Because Everything Is Ridiculous

Have you ever had a friend who just keeps talking down at you like she’s so much smarter, and all you want is to prove her wrong? It looks like our executive government can relate. According to The Washington Post, Mensa, otherwise known as the “International High IQ Society”, offered to administer an IQ test to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to help them get over their “who’s smarter?” feud.

Reports of the feud started last week, when NBC News and other news outlets released articles claiming that Tillerson had referred to Trump as a “moron” after a meeting at the Pentagon back in July. He didn’t say it in private, either; members of Trump’s national security team and cabinet officials were present.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert denied this comment, saying, “The secretary did not use that type of language to speak about the president of the Unites States. He did not say that." That’s pretty convincing, but, also, if I’d called my boss a moron, I’d have my spokesperson deny it for me too.

Trump doesn’t seem to be too worried about the drama, though. When Forbesasked him about Tillerson’s comments, he said, "I think it's fake news, but if he did [say] that, I guess we'll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win."

So, enter Mensa, the organization that refers to itself as “an international society whose only qualification for membership is a score in the top 2 percent of the general population on a standardized intelligence test.” According to The Hill, Mensa’s communications director Charles Brown, said, “American Mensa would be happy to hold a testing session for President Trump and Secretary Tillerson.”

Of course, there are way more important scandals going on in the executive government right now, such as Trump’s dealings with Russia. But we’re always suckers for some petty drama. May the smartest man win!

The Utah Police Officer Who Handcuffed & Dragged A Nurse For Doing Her Job Was Fired

Utah police officer Detective Jeff Payne has been fired after forcibly arresting a nurse who refused to draw blood from an unconscious patient in July.

According to CNN, Alex Wubbels, a nurse at the University of Utah hospital, would not draw blood from the patient, as hospital policy required the patient’s consent in order to draw blood. Wubbels could not get the patient’s consent, as he was unconscious. Payne then proceeded to arrest Wubbels.

Police body cam footage recorded Wubbels backing away from Payne and screaming as he forcefully handcuffs her and drags her to a police car. "I've done nothing wrong! I've done nothing wrong! Why is this happening? This is crazy," Wubbels yelled as he dragged her. Minutes later, Wubbels was released without being charged.

ABC News states that “The Salt Lake City Police Department said it fired Det. Jeff Payne after an internal investigation found he violated department policy when he arrested University of Utah Hospital nurse Alex Wubbels on July 26.” Payne’s supervisor, James Tracy, was demoted two ranks, from lieutenant to police officer, because of his role in the arrest.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said in his letter notifying Payne of his termination: “"I am deeply troubled by your lack of sound, professional judgment and your discourteous, disrespectful and unwarranted behavior, which unnecessarily escalated a situation that could and should have been resolved in a manner far different from the course of action you chose to pursue.”

Unfortunately, Payne’s termination will not bring in an end to the pattern of excessive force by the police. Hopefully, however, it will promote dialogue on what constitutes police brutality and encourage citizens to be aware of their rights when it comes to arrests. Flex Your Rights provides helpful information on how to interact with police. It’s important that we are all educated on our rights so that we can fight police misconduct as effectively as possible and contribute to the conversation on police brutality.

After Las Vegas, When Will It Be Enough For Change On Gun Control?

$

Following the mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead and nearly 500 people injured after a gunman opened fire on a country music festival on October 2, Her Campus contributors reached out to reflect on the ongoing national  conversations and to critically address the volume of mass shootings they've witnessed throughout their lifetimes and, in many cases, the lack of action they believe politicians have taken to address them.

By Lauren Wigren

To all the freedom-loving gun advocates who offer “thoughts and prayers” every time tragedy strikes, you ought to rethink your priorities— and I mean really consider them. I get it: You like to hunt. You live in a tough neighborhood and want to feel safe. You want your family to be safe. It’s your right and you don’t want the government to take your liberties away.

Whatever your reasoning is, I know you don’t want anyone to get hurt and that you have a logical explanation for why you want (or maybe even need) a gun.

What I’m struggling to comprehend is why you would ever need a semiautomatic rifle that can easily fire multiple rounds with the use of perfectly legal adjustments, such as a bump stock. If you really feel the need to protect yourself, get a revolver or a pistol. Likewise, for hunting, invest in a rifle specifically for hunting. There is no need for ordinary citizens to own military-grade weaponry such as semiautomatic assault rifles, and frankly, I want to see these hazards banned.

Think of all the innocent children and adolescents at Columbine and Sandy Hook. Try to put yourself in the shoes of moviegoers in Aurora, in 2012, who never thought a fun night out would result in the violent death of a loved one. Think about all the club-goers at Pulse and all the music enthusiasts in Las Vegas who were dancing, singing and having the time of their lives one minute—then fearing for their lives, or lying dead themselves, the next.

How could you not want to enact change? I believe in God and will pray right alongside you; however, like most other people, I’ve come to the valid conclusion that praying is just not enough. At least not anymore.

There have been more than 1,500 mass shootings in America since Sandy Hook, and that will have only been five years ago this December. Sandy Hook alone should have been enough to get the ball rolling. The fact that we watched children get shot to death and did absolutely nothing is sickening and a slap in the face to the victims’ families and friends to say the least. The fact that we’ve allowed this senseless violence to continue so much further is even more infuriating.

Before you reiterate the narrative that “bad guys will get guns anyway, even if they are illegal,” consider this: Australia, after experiencing the worst mass shooting in the nation’s history in 1996, restricted gun access, banning automatic and semi-automatic weapons, instilling a waiting period for gun purchases, and renewing gun licensure requirements.

There have not been any mass shootings in Australia since. Maybe we’ll never be completely rid of gun violence, but we can certainly decrease it if we were just willing to try.

As a law-abiding citizen who wants to go to restaurants, movies and concerts without fearing for my safety, as a future teacher who wants to ensure that my classroom will be a safe and comfortable environment for my future students, and as a person who wants to someday have a family of my own and does not want to raise children in a violent, unsafe society, I demand action be taken.

I am fed up with being constantly reminded of the second amendment, legislature that was written when guns were not capable of what they are now. I am disgusted by the lack of empathy shown by both citizens and politicians who somehow think their right to a semiautomatic weapon, regardless of whether or not they actually use one, is more important than someone’s child. I’m frustrated that just because we cannot eradicate gun violence completely, we are somehow justified in not trying to do anything at all to ensure our fellow citizens’ as well as our own safety.

Change needs to happen. We cannot keep letting the unthinkable happen, especially now that tragedies occur so often that we have become almost desensitized to them.  As both an American and a global citizen, I demand gun control.

Have your own thoughts on the gun control debate? Let us know.

7 Reasons Your Weight is Fluctuating (& How to Deal)

$

Whether you had one too many margaritas at the bar or ordered takeout more times than you’d like to admit this past weekend, we’ve all experienced it –– the fear associated with stepping on the scale and reading a number that is a few pounds heavier than you expected. While the scale probably isn’t lying, don’t let the number it reads weigh you down!

Fluctuations in your weight are actually completely normal, and we enlisted the help of Dr. Charlie Seltzer, MD, of Lean4Life Weight Loss & Fitness Solutions, to explain why. Read below for the truth behind weight fluctuations.

1. You're looking at the scale way too often

When it comes to body image, the scale is not the end all, be all. In fact, it is only one point of information in a set of many!

"You don’t need to see the scale move on a day to day basis," Dr. Seltzer says. "I encourage people not to get too happy when the scale is down and not to get too discouraged when the scale is up." So, just how often should you be stepping on the scale? According to Dr. Seltzer, it is good to weigh yourself once a day, in the morning, after you use the bathroom.

If you find yourself checking the number it reads obsessively, you may be at risk of a deeper psychological issue. "Eating disorders are very common and the association with the scale is a warning sign," Dr. Seltzer says. "At the end of the day, anyone can lose weight ––what matters is not that you do it but how you do it. If you're doing it in a way that makes you miserable, then something isn't right." Keep calm and remember that the most important thing isn't how you look, but how you feel!

2. You’re not staying hydrated

Water is a key factor in your daily weight fluctuations. For example, if you do cardio at the gym for an hour and don’t hydrate properly afterwards the scale could read a few pounds lower than expected because you burned off that water weight when you were exercising.

According to Dr. Seltzer, this is because hydration plays a major part in the number you see on the scale. "This is why it's important to keep in mind that there are many factors besides the number on the scale that go into play when it comes to your body," he says. "You can't live your life by the scale, but you can't disregard it either." Keep this simple fact in mind the next time you weigh yourself!

3. You’re constipated

This one might seem obvious, but there is more to it than you think. Constipation can be triggered by numerous things: from your period to your stress levels, to a lack of sleep, to your travel habits, to your diet (and then some). If you feel struck by a backed up system, drinking more water and eating fiber-rich foods will help get things moving.

4. Carbs make your body harbor more water

Everyone knows that carbs are a big villain in the weight-watching world, but does anyone actually know the reasoning behind it? Well, we’ve gotten to the bottom of it. Our bodies can store a lot of carbs. When you eat more carbs than your body currently needs ––and we all know how easy that is–– the leftover carbs get stored in your liver and muscles until they are ready to be used. These leftover carbs cause the body to store more water than it otherwise would.

The scale is going to move no matter what you eat ––carbs or anything else. So, Dr. Seltzer recommends that students focus on healthy eating habits rather than the number on the scale. "If you have too many carbs, don't worry too much," he says. "Too much of anything can make you gain weight, so just focus on making healthy calorie choices."

Reilly Tuccinard, a junior at the University of South Carolina, understands how hard it is to maintain a healthy weight in college, especially with the temptations of food and alcohol. "I find that refraining from buying snacks and always keeping fruit, veggies and lean proteins in my kitchen are the best way to ensure that I'm on track," Reilly says. "Focus on eating what makes you feel good and working out a healthy amount!" Weight fluctuations are inevitable, but making body-conscious decisions about what you are eating is a great step to avoiding them.

5. You’re consuming too much sodium

Have you ever been hungover, eaten a greasy meal, chugged a massive bottle of water and felt like a bloated loaf of bread? This is because water and salt are extremely attracted to each other. "If you're not used to eating a lot of salt, the excess sodium will cause your body to hold onto water," Dr. Seltzer says. "Because of this, any water you drink will fill up in your body ––first in your muscles, and then elsewhere."

Believe it or not, drinking more water is actually the solution to this problem (besides cutting down on your salt intake, of course). "Drinking more water will generally cause you to retain less water over time," Dr. Seltzer says. "There are two hormones that control your salt and water intake [aldosterone and anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)]. If you're chronically eating a lot of salt or drinking a lot of water, you can process both more quickly. If you're not used to eating a lot of salt or drinking a lot of water, when you do, you bloat."

PSA: Potassium-rich foods are also a big problem-solver. Can someone pass us a banana?

6. Your period is about to start

Feeling bloated around the time of your period is not something new. But, what is the cause of this feeling? "Women on their period will generally weigh a little more because it makes you retain more water," Dr. Seltzer says.  "It has to do with high estrogen levels."

If you find yourself unhappy with your body's appearance during your period, don't cry and cram in a three-hour gym session. Relax and understand that this is a completely natural process! In a few days, your body will be back to normal.

7. You're drinking too many sugary alcoholic beverages

Drinking is an obvious part of the college lifestyle ––and whether you consider yourself a frequent drinker or not, alcohol could be causing your weight to fluctuate! However, it is possible to add alcohol into your diet in a healthy way.

"The first thing is to understand that in college you're going to drink," Dr. Seltzer says. "Drinking has calories. Drinking also makes you eat more calories. You have to work it into your routine ––if you know you're going out and are going to have three vodkas one night, then balance those drinks with your other calories during that day." The next time you go to the bar, shy away from the super sugary or fruity drinks. Your body will thank you!

It is important to keep in mind that weight fluctuations are extremely natural and normal –– so don’t let them bring you down, collegiettes! Rather than torturing yourself by obsessing over an inconsistent number on the scale, focus instead on how you look and feel.

Lush’s New Fall Scent Just Topped Pumpkin Spice & We Are Shook

Alright October babes, I know how much you love your daily PSLs and pumpkin-scented everything, but people grow––and the reign of pumpkin spice has officially ended. You’re probably wondering how any other scent could top something so iconic as pumpkin spice, yet Lush Cosmetics has finally done it. Say hello to your new obsession: Cardamom Coffee.

Lush made their Cardamom Coffee perfume available in the UK last winter, but the beautiful little bottle is finally making its way to North America. Let me just say, you’re going to want to coat your body in this immediately. Cardamom oil and rose oil are the main ingredients of the perfume, which create a smoky, sweet smell to make you feel warm and relaxed. If you could bottle the feeling of fall, this would be it. The aromatic perfume transports you to crisp Saturday mornings spent wrapped in a fuzzy blanket and drinking hot chocolate, and the long-lasting wear means you can feel the autumn bliss all day. Plus, according to Ayurvedic medicine, cardamom seeds serve as a means to fight depression in the form of tea, so say goodbye to your winter blues, too!

Be warned, though coffee may be in the title, this smells nothing like your typical cup ‘a joe. The scent is much more evoking of an exotic spice than traditional coffee brew, but I’m not complaining. The perfume can be purchased at Lush’s three Gorilla Gallery Tours in 30mL ($76.95) or 100mL ($154.95) liquid perfumes, or a solid perfume ($15.95). Don't worry if you can't make the tour; you can buy your own bottle at North American Lush shops or online later this month. In the meantime, stay up to date on all of Lush's launch dates and new perfumes on Facebook and Instagram. It's time to kiss pumpkin spice goodbye, and welcome a warm cup of Cardamom Coffee into your life this fall season!

Kevin Might Suffer the Most From Jack's Death on 'This Is Us,'& I Only Just Realized It

Before this week’s episode of This Is Us, Kevin definitely wasn’t the most popular of the Big Three among fans. Between Randall making us sob regularly and Kate inspiring us by following her singing dreams, struggling actor Kevin just fell a little flat. It wasn’t his fault—after all, he spent most of Season 1 torn between two women we didn’t really care about before his secret ex-wife/childhood sweetheart appeared to put Kevin in a redeeming light.

But if there’s anything “Deja Vu” conveyed, it's that this former high school athlete has more going on inside than I thought. When working opposite Jack’s hero Sylvester Stallone in his big break movie, Kevin was forced to think about his dad when Kate brought up Jack’s fanboy-ing to Stallone. The movie legend then addressed the siblings’ loss with Kevin, telling him, “There’s no such thing as a long time ago. There’s only memories that mean something and memories that don’t.”

Although Kevin acting touchy about the loss of Jack was briefly seen before, Stallone’s exchange with him triggered an exploration that suggests Kevin’s failure to ever come to terms with or healthily express his grief. He flashed back to his childhood memories with Jack and, notably, there were none shown from beyond Kevin’s tenth year. As we’ve all seen, Jack was literally Superdad when the triplets were little. He struggled with his drinking but suppressed it before they were old enough to notice. It wasn’t until they were teenagers that both Jack’s alcoholism and his marriage struggles became evident to them. Of course Kevin's happiest memories with his father would be from childhood.

It hasn’t been said, but I’m willing to bet that Kevin severely drifted from both his parents in high school. He was consumed in his relationship with Sophie and didn’t tell either parent when he started having sex (to be fair, not many kids would). While Kate was obviously close to Jack even as a teenager, Randall sided more with Rebecca, having witnessed Jack yelling at her during the couple’s blowup. This natural distance would’ve only intensified when Kevin wasn’t initially with his grieving siblings after Jack’s death. Again, he had Sophie, either bottling up his grief entirely or confiding in her instead of family, which probably turned out badly for him once they divorced.

His whereabouts after Jack’s death seem to still strike guilt in Kevin. He told Kate, “It’s really hard for me with Dad,” clearly holding back tears. We also caught a glimpse of Kevin’s leg injury and Jack giving him his necklace, which seems to rule out Kevin hurting himself in the house fire.

Playing alongside grown Kevin acting out a war scene, the time of his injury seems to be the definitive, haunting moment for him when it comes to his father. Was this the only time the two bonded when Kevin was older? Did he see his father as an actual person at that moment? What transpired for Jack to want to give Kevin the necklace?

The ultimate insight we received about Kevin and his lingering grief came from Kate. Glancing at Jack’s urn at the end of the episode, she remarked, “He’s just like you.”

Cue Kevin popping pills to deal with his bad leg. Suddenly, his reluctance to discuss Jack made incredible sense. With the possibility of Kevin facing his own addiction out there, a terrifying biological connection emerges. Does Kevin see himself in his father, who avoided difficult emotions and refused to acknowledge his alcoholism until it was almost too late? Kevin made a big point of telling Kate that he doesn’t have to be sad and damaged, which basically tells us he’s exactly that.

Between the episode’s major hint of Kevin’s health condition and deeper insight into his relationship with Jack, Kevin may very well be the triplet still suffering the most from their dad’s death. Given the producers’ promise of a heartbreaking performance from Justin Hartley, this is just the beginning of Kevin’s new arc.

Blue Ivy Just Wore A Dress That Costs More Than Your Yearly Rent

Forget becoming a doctor or a lawyer. When I grow up, I want to be Blue Ivy Carter! Regardless of the fact that I am 16 years older than the famous tot, she already has the life that I aspire to possess one day. At five, the daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z is already a regular in the tabloids and fashion blogs, has a top-selling song dedicated to her and is the youngest person to ever appear on the Billboard charts.

To top of it all off, she also got to wear a stunning Mischka Aoki dress that costs more than my yearly rent. #GOALS. At a wedding in New Orleans this past weekend, the toddler sported a dress that retails between $3,456.90 and $5,577.50. With the last name Carter, I probably wouldn’t bat an eye at that price either.

The designer uploaded a string of photos showing off the look, and you have to admit, Blue Ivy looks uh-mazing.

Here’s to hoping that Sir and Rumi are just as fashionable as their big sister. And Bey and Jay, if you’re ever looking for more children, I’ll happily put myself up for adoption.

Nope! It’s actually Andele Lara, Rihanna’s uncanny doppelganger who just happens to be working on a collab with Patrick Starrr. The resemblance is so similar that Lara has even had to write on her blog, “I’ve never had a career of being a 'Rihanna Look Alike'– Yes, there is a little resemblance to Rihanna but NO; I am NOT a Rihanna lookalike.”

While not a singer or Fenty Beauty founder, Lara has done some pretty impressive things of her own. She works as a social media influencer and runs an inspiring blog, Grow & Glow. "I have blended my passion for personal growth, fashion, beauty and wellness into an authentic mission to empower millennial women to dream big while nurturing their own self-love/care, confidence and beauty," she states as her personal mission. 6 Surprising Careers To Consider If You Love Writing

$

Gilmore Girls’ Rory Gilmore has long set the standard for career mapping as someone who loved to write. As early as high school, she knew she wanted to be a journalist. She wanted to document the world around her, make a difference with her words and, most importantly, see and do “something.” She worked for the newspaper at every school she attended and often compared her professional aspirations to those of CNN chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour.

But that’s not how things worked out for Rory. In the end, she was offered a job as a high-school teacher and later decided she was better suited to be a novelist. Her fictional story is telling of a more realistic concern: is journalism your only career option if you love to write? We spoke with professionals who share this love of writing and whose careers, while not in journalism, still allow them to pursue their passion. Here are six other career paths to consider if you love writing.

1. Content Marketing

People who pursue a career in content marketing spend their time creating branded content like blogs, social media posts and even video series.

Marketing executive Lizzi Hart says that she had no idea what content marketing was as a journalism student but was intrigued by a job opening titled, “Write for The Guardian and more.” Her main role is now link building and search engine optimization (SEO), which is basically getting external pages to link to the product or service she’s promoting. “It’s not the typical news pieces I thought I would be writing as a journalist,” she says, yet her work has appeared in The Independent, Business Insider and even Cosmopolitan!

Like Hart, Sarah Linney, content manager for real-estate start-up Triplemint, studied and worked in journalism before landing her job as content manager for a real estate company based in New York. Previously, she says, “I would just churn out copy day in, day out, which didn't leave much room for autonomy and creativity." Now, she produces tons of interesting multimedia content about life in the city.

A career in content marketing will consistently challenge you to stay creative and innovative in your work because every project is different!

2. Psychologist

This might come as a shock but psychologists spend quite a bit of their time writing about mental health and wellness. In fact, you've probably come across a number of online articles about human behaviors, mental processes and helpful methods for coping with life in general that were written by psychologists. Dr. Jude Miller Burke, author of The Adversity Advantage: Turn Your Childhood Hardship into Career Success, has been a practicing psychologist for more than 25 years. She writes every day, sharing her expertise in her books, articles and speeches. "I am determined and passionate to communicate the path of resilience to overcome obstacles and move on to greater happiness in life," she says. Writing allows psychologists to reach and help more people.

3. Non-Profit Grant Writing

What could be better than using your writing skills to help others? Grant writing is an invaluable skill that requires you to be both persuasive and concise in your work. Grant writers work primarily for businesses, educational institutions and, of course, nonprofits that benefit from external financial aid. Your work can make life-saving research a reality or set into action grassroots campaigns for important policy changes.

Christina Disbrow works as the founder of and grant writer for All Write, All Write, All Write, a boutique firm that strives to provide administrative and fundraising support to small nonprofits. “I’ve always loved to write and help people. Nonprofit grant writing has allowed me to combine both of these passions into a career,” she says. Grant writers must be able to explain how their cause will benefit from the grant and why it deserves to be considered. This process requires vision, persuasiveness, creativity, motivation and attention to detail. It’s a lot like putting together a compelling narrative!

4. Screenwriting

Writing for film or television might seem like a long shot, but if you’ve always had a passion for creative writing, it might be worth looking into.  Screenwriters have a knack for storytelling; they know how to turn action into words with ease and precision. As a screenwriter, you can write scripts for feature films, television shows, commercials and even video games. It’s not just about creating interesting and naturalistic dialogue; some scenes may have no dialogue at all. At its core, screenwriting is more about documenting a visual story in great, descriptive detail.   Creating interesting characters, developing backstories that span years, writing tear-jerking monologues—that’s what screenwriting is about. This is no easy career path but it is certainly rewarding.

Daphne Mallory and her daughter Sabya Clarke work together as screenwriters. Mallory says she has always been committed to telling stories and has written for The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine and others in the past but her true joy comes from writing science-fiction film and TV scripts. Mallory says that she and Clarke, who studies filmmaking at the California College of the Arts, have written three television pilots, several short films and even an original feature film.

5. Academia

You might think that your professors have it easy only showing up to classes a few times a week but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Professors spend the majority of their time working on their research and trying to get their work published. In fact, to get tenure, professors are required to have a minimum number of scholarly books and articles already published.

Dr. Luz Claudio, author of How To Write and Publish a Scientific Paper: The Step-by-Step Guide and tenured professor of environmental medicine and public health, says, “Most of [my] time is spent writing scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals and writing grant proposals to support [my] projects.” In fact, she recently tracked her work activities and found that almost 70 percent of her time is spent writing.

Another common misconception is that writing for academia is boring or restrictive, but it’s actually far more liberating than you might think. You can pursue a career in academia in almost any specialization: philosophy, Italian literature, neuroscience, media studies and so much more.

6. Public Relations

Public relations is a lot like advertising. You’re tasked with selling a favorable image of your client or brand and much of your work revolves around getting them featured by the appropriate media outlets. That’s why public relations specialists must be excellent writers. Suki Mulberg Altamirano, founder and CEO of Lexington Public Relations, says, “Good writing is essential to successful media relations. You’re constantly leveraging this skill from writing pitches to creating client dialogue.”

PR specialists working at an agency often write and pitch multiple press releases in one day! And because they work closely with the press, they run on tight deadlines. When a news outlet requests a client biography or a descriptive write-up about a product you’ve pitched them, you’ll need to get back to them as soon as possible before they move on to the next thing to meet their own deadlines.  If you can be persuasive in your writing and quick on your feet, this is the job for you.

The best thing about a passion or talent for writing is the versatility it offers you professionally and leisurely. Many professional writers maintain their own personal writing projects, like a blog or journal, just for fun. You can write from almost anywhere and life is never short of inspiration. If you love to write, don’t limit yourself to one or two over-saturated career options. The more you write, the more you’ll find that you develop your own voice and niche. Figuring out just where you belong in the writing world will follow.

A Video of Ben Affleck Groping Hilarie Burton on 'TRL' is Going Viral Following His Harvey Weinstein Statement

An old video of Ben Affleck groping One Tree Hill star Hilarie Burton on MTV’s Total Request Live made its rounds through the internet on Wednesday. According to the Daily Mail, the incident took place back in 2003, when Affleck was hosting the show. However, the date and briefness of the crime—yes, groping is a form of sexual harassment, which is a crime—doesn’t make it any less serious.

Affleck took to Twitter to apologize for this incident, writing, “I acted inappropriately toward Ms. Burton and I sincerely apologize.” Somehow, his apology seems less sincere, seeing as he only acknowledged his mistake after the 14-year-old video clip went viral.

People explains that the clip resurfaced after Burton tweeted the video herself. Burton reminded the world of the crime committed against her after a fan, in reference to Affleck shaming Harvey Weinstein, explained that Affleck also harassed Burton. “He also grabbed Hilarie Burton’s breasts on TRL once. Everyone forgot though,” Shanice Brim said on Twitter.

Burton responded to the tweet, saying, “I didn’t forget.”

Burton's words are a chilling reminder that victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment never forget. These crimes live with their victims, yet these crimes are often ignored or understated by the public and their own aggressors.

This viral clip of Affleck grabbing Burton’s breast resurfaced shortly after Affleck took to Twitter to demonize Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment. In a statement posted to his account, Affleck said of Weinstein, “I am saddened and angry that a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, sexually harass and manipulate many women over decades. The additional allegations of assault that I read this morning made me sick. This is completely unacceptable, and I find myself asking what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen to others. We need to do better at protecting our sisters, friends, coworkers and daughters. We must support those who come forward, condemn this type of behavior when we see it and help ensure there are more women in positions of power.”

If Weinstein’s actions are so “unacceptable,” then why would you grope someone’s boob?

While this might seem like a powerful monologue to deliver (especially since Affleck drafted it just a day before International Day of the Girl), Affleck is a man who committed sexual harassment himself, so his Twitter speech loses most of its credibility. Plus, I can't help put notice that he was able to deliver a certified novel about Weinstein's wrongdoings, yet he could only be bothered to post one sentence about what he did to Burton. Although, what can you expect from an Affleck?

What's more shocking than Affleck's underwhelming, 14-years-late "apology" is that MTV never reprimanded him for his crime at the time, even though it's clear in the video that Burton was extremely uncomfortable in her encounter with him.

These repugnant acts show that even celebrities aren’t immune to sexual assault or harassment. While they might seem like “untouchables,” it’s vital that stars like Burton, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow speak out against rape culture. If you or anyone you know is a victim of sexual assault or harassment, please don’t hesitate to report it or contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline, because nobody should ever fall victim to these crimes.

Miley Cyrus Spilled the Tea on Her Wild Years During Carpool Karaoke, & It's Epic

I love celebrities who noticeably calm down after a bit of a wild period, and Miley Cyrus is definitely becoming one of these stars. Things were a little crazy for her a couple of years ago, but she has seemed to develop a new kind of maturity recently. She spilled the tea on her crazier moments in her Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden, revealing the truth about her infamous “Wrecking Ball” video and how sober she was for that VMAs performance. This is the tell all I’ve wanted for years.

Although Refinery29 reports that Cyrus quit smoking marijuana, that didn’t stop her from discussing her past with it while doing Carpool Karaoke. When Corden asked if she was high while performing “We Can’t Stop” at the 2013 VMAs, Cyrus actually gave a bit of a disappointing response.

“Actually zero,” Cyrus said of how high she was then on a scale of one to 10. “Zero. I can’t smoke before I go on stage. I get too scared...That’s just me...That’s how insane I am. That’s just normal.”

However, she did admit to being at a 10 while filming the “Wrecking Ball” video, also discussing what she thought of to muster up tears for the song. “I had a puppy who died, [who] was like, my number one,” she said. “I thought about my puppy the whole time. That’s how much I loved my puppy.”

Although the karaoke bash was severely missing a Hannah Montana singalong, Cyrus proved that she has definitely learned from her crazier moments. “I think the first VMAs [in 2013 with the] twerking, Robin Thicke...led me to being the activist that I am now because I realized if that many people were going to talk about something that I did or something that I do that I should make it a good thing,” she told Corden. “And I should make it something that can change people’s lives rather than be a controversial conversation that does nothing but become a fun Halloween costume for people.”

Nicely said, girl. I’m glad to see Cyrus growing up and living her best life today. Check out her full Carpool Karaoke segment above!

20 Couples Halloween Costumes for 2017

What better reason to have an SO than to dress up with someone in couples-themed costumes on Halloween? You may not always have a partner for this kickoff to the holiday season, so when you're part of a couple, you need to jump on that opportunity and get creative with your costume choice.

Luckily, there are tons of possible costume ideas based on 2017's popular and relevant couples in real life and pop culture. Below are 20 couples Halloween costumes that would work best this year, so you better get started on putting together your outfit!

1. Jon Snow and Daenerys from Game of Thrones

Forget the fact that Kit Harrington is engaged to Rose Leslie, who played Jon Snow's lover Ygritte. The biggest GoT couple news this year was Jon getting down with Dany, who's his aunt. In these costumes, you and your SO will likely stir up plenty of attention (and fan theories) at your Halloween party.

2. Evan Hansen and Zoe Murphy from Dear Evan Hansen

Even if you aren't a musical theater fan, you probably found yourself jamming out to "Waving Through a Window" from the Tony-winning show Dear Evan Hansen. The best part about dressing up as Evan and his crush Zoe is the casualness of the costumes—everything you'd need is likely already in your closet!

3. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Again, this can be a super simple choice since these two have only made one official public appearance, but tbh, we all fell in love with them this year. Find white and black button-downs, two pairs of shades and perhaps a ginger wig, and then you're good to go!

4. Sebastian and Mia from La La Land

This couple perfected this look ahead of Halloween, and based on this pic, it looks like choosing this costume means you'll dance the night away!

5. Yorkie and Kelly from "San Junipero"

The popular Black Mirror episode received endless praise, including Emmy awards for Outstanding TV Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series. Dressing up as Yorkie and Kelly involves some great '80s-inspired clothing, so a visit to a thrift store may even be necessary!

6. June/Offred and Nick from The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale definitely isn't a model for great relationships, but these two may be the exception. By dressing up as this couple, you're also bringing even more attention to the Emmys' Best Drama-winning series

7. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

Dressing up as this power couple is a good idea any year, but I think it's safe to say that, amidst the uncertainty of 2017, Chrissy and John were true saviors this year.

8. Betty and Jughead from Riverdale

If you're an intense Riverdale fan (or just have a crush on Cole Sprouse in this role), dressing up as Bughead is a must.

9. Selena Gomez and The Weeknd

If there's a particularly glamorous couple in your life, suggest one of 2017's biggest celebrity pairs to them for an epic Halloween costume.

10. Chip and Joanna Gaines

To honor the Gaines'last season of Fixer Upper, break out your flannels and work boots to dress up as this DIY couple.

11. Jack and Rebecca Pearson from This Is Us

For the perfect blend of sweetness and vintage style, try copying the Pearsons' wedding day look with your boyfriend. One couple already did it with some pretty fantastic-looking results!

12. Steve Trevor and Diana from Wonder Woman

If your guy knows that you're powerful and do perfectly well on your own, he probably won't mind finding a Steve Trevor turtleneck to accompany your fierce Diana.

13. Ally and Ivy Mayfair-Richards from American Horror Story: Cult

This couple's fate in the ongoing season of AHS is still up in the air, but AHS characters and Halloween go together like peanut butter and jelly.

14. Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez

Remember that America's Next Top Model shoot where the girls played both parts of famous celebrity couples? If the same shoot happened today, J. Lo and A-Rod would've been included in its lineup. Like with Selena and The Weeknd, this costume choice is for a fashionable pair that's willing to go over the top.

15. The Distracted Boyfriend Meme

You may have to tread carefully to find a third person that's cool with crashing a couples costume, but if you and your SO already have a third wheel who's both aware and proud of that status, try it out!

16. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip from The Crown

The actual Elizabeth and Philip are still alive and well, but the story of their early days was explored on the Netflix hit's first season. Guys, English royals can be sexy! Find yourself a luscious fur coat (ideally fake) and your SO a tux with tails.

17. Nomi and Amanita from Sense8

The Netflix sci-fi series will end with a proper finale next year, but Nomi and Amanita were one of the show's most solid couples.

18. Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty

Remember these two? They're not a real-life couple, but they were paired onscreen in 1967's Bonnie and Clyde and reunited this year to present the Best Picture winner at the Oscars. As we all saw, it didn't go so well. If you love your Halloween costume to include a good cultural reference, dressing up as Faye and Warren is the way to go!

19. Jim Hopper and Joyce from Stranger Things

Joyce is getting a different love interest in the Netflix series' upcoming second season, but if you have a soft spot for these old high school friends, get a sheriff's outfit for your SO and perhaps some Christmas lights for yourself.

20. Belle and the Beast

Belle and her hairy beau are in again, thanks to the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake that hit theaters earlier this year. So if this book-smart princess is your fave, it's the perfect time to dust off your yellow ball gown.

With so many shows, movies and tweets to turn to for inspiration, your couples Halloween costume is bound to be a memorable one.

Taylor Swift Is Launching Her Own Lifestyle App

Taylor Swift is not taking the era of her Reputation album lightly. Soon after news broke of her December concert appearances and her sliding into fans' DMs, it has now been announced that Swift will launch a lifestyle app called "The Swift Life." This girl sure knows how to market, huh?

PEOPLE reports that Swift's app will incorporate posts from different social media outlets to promote any Swift-related news and updates. She will work with the company Glu, which has also produced celebrity apps such as "Katy Perry Pop" and the infamous "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood." I can't help but notice how ironic it is that the company has worked with others who don't exactly get along with Swift.

In addition to the new app, Swift will reportedly release personalized emojis known as "Taymojis." If you're a diehard Swiftie, the end of the year looks like it'll be quite the magical time for you.

A video promoting the lifestyle app says it will launch in late 2017 and feature exclusive pictures and videos. Fans can share content for both friends and Swift to see, and music will be added to the system on a weekly basis.

"I think you guys are really going to like this," Swift said in the promotional video, then joking, "I mean, I hope. It would be preferable if you did."

Glu CEO Nick Earl calls the app a "new digital entertainment project" and "a deeply social environment." No matter how officials want to label it, fans are bracing themselves for the start of this new community.

A College Student Injured in the Las Vegas Shooting Sues the Hotel Where the Shooter Stayed

A college student injured in the Las Vegas shooting is suing MGM Resorts, the owner of the Mandalay Bay hotel, for negligence towards maintaining the hotel in a "reasonably safe condition,"BuzzFeed News reports. 21-year-old Paige Gasper, a student at Sonoma State University, was hit by a bullet during the mass shooting at the Route 91 country music festival earlier this month.

"This is the America we live in where people can do horrible things," Gasper's lawyer said at a press conference on Wednesday. "By failing to plan for it, we put a lot of people in danger."

Gasper's lawsuit also calls out Live Nation Entertainment, which hosted the festival, as a defendant. Also named as defendants are shooter Stephen Paddock's estate and the manufacturer of the bump stock device that Paddock used in the attack.

The lawsuit addresses the hotel's alleged failure to respond quickly to Paddock shooting a hotel security guard. Speaking against the new timeline of the shooting, which claimed that the guard was shot six minutes before Paddock began attacking the crowd below, MGM said, "We cannot be certain about the most recent timeline that has been communicated publicly, and we believe what is currently being expressed may not be accurate."

"This lawsuit is not about gun control," Gasper's lawyers said, instead focusing on Paddock's success in sneaking several weapons into the hotel room without staff noticing. "He spent at least four days stockpiling weapons and ammunition. One would wonder how the room service or cleaning staff did not notice what was going on."

The Sonoma State Star newspaper reports that Gasper was with six friends when the shooting began during country singer Jason Aldean's festival performance. She is currently recovering from a liver laceration and fractured ribs caused by her bullet wound. According to BuzzFeed, she was trampled by the crowd while her friends were helping her escape, but a stranger found her and brought her to a hospital in his truck.

Gasper's mother Heather Selken said at the press conference that choosing to file a lawsuit was difficult, but that "for change to happen, the hard things have to happen.""We want change to happen so this won't happen to you, your children and your families," she said.

Before the lawsuit came about, MGM Resorts announced its donation of $3 million for shooting victims and first responders. As Gasper has a long recovery ahead of her, a GoFundMe page has raised over $4,000 in her name.

HC Wake-Up Call: Wildfire Death Toll Rises, NBC News Refused to Publish Weinstein Story & A Twix Bar Spread

California Wildfires Have Killed at Least 23

The Northern California wildfires that began on Sunday night have now killed at least 23 people, BuzzFeed News reports. Hundreds have been reported missing, while states of emergency have been declared in seven counties of the northern region. The majority of deaths have occurred in Sonoma County, while 13 deaths came as a result of a fire that burned about 28,000 acres. Several towns have been evacuated, and at least 7,000 people in Napa County has lost power.

Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano said in a press conference that he thought the fires would be "one of the worst natural disasters in California history."

NBC News Wouldn't Let an Employee Publish His Harvey Weinstein Story

Hollywood is buzzing with film producer Harvey Weinstein's recently revealed history of sexual harassment, but NBC News contributor Ronan Farrow had an early scoop on the story earlier this year. The Huffington Post reports that Farrow obtained an audio recording in March of Weinstein admitting to groping a model and then scored an interview with one of his victims in August. Beginning his reporting in January, he had gathered plenty of sources on the subject, but NBC executives told him he still didn't have enough and asked him to stop his investigation. When the network refused to let him use an NBC camera for his interviews, Farrow paid for a film crew himself and eventually turned to The New Yorker with his story. Following the publication of the initial New York Times report, NBC News was the only Big Three network not to share the story on its evening news.

Move Over, Nutella; Twix Spread Is Coming Through

Nutella is my go-to jar of happiness, but it looks like it may have some competition soon. POPSUGAR reports that the latest delicious spread is Mars Twix Spread, available for only five dollars at Cost Plus World Market. A reviewer calls the UK-based spread "a buttery blend of ground-up Twix bars" with biscuit pieces visible within. It seems that this is a great alternate for anyone who isn't a fan of Nutella, and you can easily find it in Cost Plus or its online stores.

A Former Trump Foreign Policy Advisor Is Pleading The Fifth In Russian Probes — Here's What That Means

$

Carter Page, a former foreign policy advisor in President Donald Trump’s campaign, wants to use his Fifth Amendment rights in regards to the ongoing Russian probe investigation.

Politico explains that Page told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he won’t testify in the investigation panel.

In case you haven’t kept up with the news in the last several months, the Senate Intelligence Committee has been thoroughly investigating any links between Russia and Trumps campaign for the last several months.

CNN elaborates that Page has “demanded” to be able to publicly testify in front of the investigation panel and has even offer to attend the committee’s opening hearing on Nov. 1. However, Page wants to “plead the Fifth Amendment,” which could impede the committee’s investigation.

Slate explains that Page has previously been employed by Merrill Lynch. However, he took a hiatus from Trump’s campaign once word got out that he was traveling to Moscow (which just makes it a bit more suspicious when he vehemently refuses to cooperate with an investigation).

“Page has been demanding the government release information about his communications that were picked up during surveillance operations. Page contends that he does not want to be caught in a ‘perjury trap’ since the government has more detailed records about his communications,” CNN says.

According to The Washington Post, the FBI obtained a FASI warrant back in April, which allows the organization to monitor Page’s communications

Given Page’s visits to Russia and his ties to the presidential campaign, can he actually plead the fifth? Well, that depends. If the Senate Intelligence Committee chooses to subpoena Page, then he will be required by law to attend any and all court hearings and testify as a witness.

While the Fifth Amendment allows a citizen to refrain from commenting on or answering any question about criminal cases, the Fifth Amendment doesn’t protect citizens in the court room who are legally bound to be there and testify. If Page is issued a subpoena to testify in the investigation, then he must cooperate.

Page does have the right to contest the subpoena (if the committee ever issues him one), which would require his lawyer(s) to quash the subpoena. While placing a motion to quash the subpoena would require a legal battle from Page and his lawyer(s), if his motion was granted, then the subpoena would be demeaned useless.

Granted these are all hypothetical situations, but if Page were to be issued a subpoena and his efforts to quash the subpoena failed, he still could choose not to comply (because he is an adult with free will after all). However, that would lead him to be in contempt of the court (which is also a crime).

Although the committee has yet to issue a subpoena for Page, he might not be able to plead the fifth forever. Nevertheless, Page's obstinacy to plead the fifth essentially just delays the Senate Intelligence Committee's investigation.

7 Times Varchie Gave Everyone the Feels During Riverdale's Season 2 Premiere

After five months, Riverdale finally returned to The CW Wednesday night and left viewers with plenty of OMG moments. While we can all agree that Bughead is #RelationshipGoals, we can't ignore the fact that Archie and Veronica, aka #Varchie, are just as worthy of attention—and the Season 2 premiere proved that their relationship is stronger than ever. Let's reflect on the Varchie moments that gave us ALL the feels.

1. When Veronica woke up the morning after the Jubilee, proudly wearing Archie's shirt

I wouldn't mind wearing one of Archie Andrews' shirts, TBH.

2. When Archie felt overwhelmed by the aftermath of Fred getting shot by an unknown man at Pop's and tried to push Veronica away—but she refused to leave his side

Getting through a tough time is so much easier with a loyal person by your side.

3. And let's not forget that steamy AF scene, when Veronica decided it would be best to keep Archie company in the shower

A shirtless KJ Apa scene? No complaints here.

4. When Archie let out all the emotions he was bottling up inside and Veronica was there to comfort him

5. When Archie told Veronica that he doesn't deserve her because she's basically an amazing and incredibly supportive GF

6. When Fred had a hallucination that showed Archie and Veronica getting married

A post shared by Multifandom (@voidsalvxtore) on

It wasn't real, but a girl can dream, right?

7. When Archie admitted to Fred that he's crazy about Veronica

I'm not crying, you're crying.

Don't you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Here's hoping that this season brings even more "aww"-worthy moments from this couple.
