8 Things Successful Women Do in the Mornings

0
0

Starting your day can be a hassle, especially when you aren’t doing it the right way. In an effort to catch up on as much sleep as possible while still ensuring that you arrive to work on time, it’s easy to skip the most important parts of waking yourself up, invigorating your body and mind and preparing for the long day ahead so that you can be the best you that you can possibly be!

When you’re just jumping out of bed, throwing on your clothes and makeup and running out the door, you’re most likely left with droopy eyes, a rumbling stomach and dragging feet, which all come together to create a grumpy, virtual zombie. You could make it through the day as such, but wouldn’t you rather be fresh-faced and energized?

It’s not difficult! There are ways to be ready to take on the world, things that just shouldn’t ever be skipped. You might forfeit a teeny bit of sleep in the mornings, but the revitalizing results of preparing for your day the right way are definitely worth it.

1. Wake up energized

We can all probably agree on the fact that waking up to an alarm that sounds like a fire alarm is not pleasant or refreshing. Instead, try creating a pump-up playlist of your favorite songs to use as your alarm. If you set it on shuffle, you’ll wake up to a new song every day and you’ll have a great mix to get ready to. Hairbrush singing, sock dancing and all!

Once you’re up and at it, open those blinds and let the sunshine in! Seeing the sun will alert your brain that it’s time to wake up and start the day!

2. Make some time for a workout or yoga session

When you’re up before the sun on a workday, exercising is probably the last thing you want to do before heading into the office, but it’s in your best interest to push through that feeling of laziness and hit the pavement!

Reilly Tuccinard, a junior at the University of South Carolina, makes time for the gym first thing when she wakes up. “I usually feel exhausted and unmotivated, but after I finish a morning workout, I am so ready to start my day,” she says. “It's the best way for me to get focused and excited for my busy schedule—especially since I know that my workout is done and I don't need to worry about it for the rest of the day.”

Rachel Crocetti, an alum of Hofstra University and a producer at InStyle.com, takes her dog for a walk around her neighborhood in the mornings. “I avoid listening to music while walking her so I can say hi to neighbors. It always puts me in a great mindset for the day when I have a great morning walk!” she says.

If you can’t make it to the gym in the morning or don’t have time for a walk around your neighborhood, a good stretch routine or yoga session can help to loosen you up and be ready for the day ahead, too.

3. Take care of your skin

This one is super important, especially if you’ve worked out or are going to be heading out into the sun! Exercising is going to cause you to get sweaty, obviously, and the salt in your sweat can dehydrate your skin! It’s important to wash your face and moisturize, even without a workout.

Em, a graduate of Siena College and a Resident Director in New York, makes sure to wash her face every morning. “I can't start my day without doing it, but if I’m running late I have to at least splash my face with cold water,” she says. “Otherwise, I feel really groggy.”

“I also feel incomplete if I don't wear sunscreen on my face or neck. I'm making more of an effort to apply it on my arms and legs, too,” Em adds. Sun exposure, even without sunburn, can lead to skin cancer in the future. UVB rays penetrate the epidermis (the first layer of skin) and cause permanent genetic damage that can lead to skin cancer. UVA rays can penetrate even deeper into the skin, and cause lasting damage that leads to wrinkles, sagging and pronounced spider veins.

4. Make sure you hydrate

One of the first things everybody should do upon waking up in the morning is hydrate. Proper hydration has countless benefits for your body. It keeps your metabolism up, and it’ll make sure your brain doesn’t make you think you're hungry when you’re really only thirsty. Drinking enough water aids in the transformation of energy, which will keep you awake and in action instead of feeling sleepy. It also helps to build and maintain your muscles and aids your gut in digestion.

Lizzy Peper, a marketing coordinator and graduate of Marist College, chooses hot water with apple cider vinegar and lemon to jump-start her digestive system, or iced green tea for an additional energy boost from caffeine. “They are both great to have in addition to a glass of water with breakfast, and I find they are easier to get down in the morning than just gulping only water!” she says.

Sarah Madaus, a sophomore at Temple University, also likes to add apple cider vinegar to her water. “It gets my metabolism revved up,” she says.

Drinking water regularly will make you feel healthier, keep you feeling fuller for longer, and make your skin glow more than you probably knew it even could.

Keeping a water bottle next to your bed or a glass on your bathroom counter, ready to be filled, is a surefire way to make sure you’ll remember to drink up! If water isn’t your favorite choice, there are tons of ways to spice it up and make it more desirable to you, including squeezing fresh fruit into it, or letting fresh fruit soak in it overnight to infuse it with even more nutrients and flavor!

5. Eat a good breakfast

You know what they say, right? “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” so you definitely don’t want to be skipping this meal! Eating breakfast has been credited with such feats as increasing your metabolism, lowering late-night snacking rates, preventing obesity, improving your nutrition and improving your concentration.

“I always make sure I have a quality breakfast in the morning," says Lizzy. "My job can get pretty busy so if I don't fuel up in the morning, I'll burn out before I get the chance to grab something for a late lunch." She likes treating herself to a banana smoothie bowl topped with granola, oatmeal with peanut butter or cereal with fresh fruit to energize herself in the mornings.

6. Boost your self-confidence

Sometimes, the last thing you want to do is leave your home to go out to work, run errands, hit the gym, visit a friend or family member or be surrounded by society. You’re tired, you don’t feel good, you don’t look good. Whatever the reason is, there are ways to boost your mood as you get ready to leave the house!

Some have go-to mantras to repeat in times of struggle or preparation. They help to distract from whatever else is running through your mind and get you excited to take on the day:

Or, some strike a pose, take a selfie of their killer outfit, or put on their brightest lipstick to boost their self-esteem!

The wonder woman power pose is a great way to start your day, with your feet shoulder-width apart, your hands on your hips and your chin tilted up. This taking up of space that allows you to feel powerful and confident.

“I don’t really have a specific pose, but I'll definitely check myself out in the mirror after I get dressed as a ‘Hey girl, you look great and you got this’ kind of start to my day!” says Em.

Haley Cahill, a graduate of Appalachian State University, always makes sure to put lipstick on before leaving for work. “Even on days my hair is in a ponytail, my outfit barely matches and I forgot to put on jewelry, I never leave without applying some shade of pink or red lipstick,” she says. “It makes me feel confident and put together even on the most chaotic of days.”

7. Go over affirmations

In keeping with a similar theme, you could shine a little figurative light on your morning by creating lists or reading something inspiring to affirm the good things in life and take a second to forget about the bad.

Sarah likes to read something inspiring every morning. “For me it’s religious,” she says, “but it doesn't have to be for everyone. I also write three affirmations about myself, and three goals I have for the day.”

Autumn Dube, a senior at Emmanuel College, writes down three things she’s thankful for every morning. “Whether it is a great conversation with a friend, a new pair of boots, or an upcoming opportunity, I take about 5 minutes each morning to reflect on them,” she says. “It's said that being able to appreciate the good things in your life will only bring more goodness your way, and I believe in this!”

8. Plan out your schedule

Finally, in order to mentally prepare for the day ahead of you and ensure that you know what you’re in for, it’s important to take a few moments to jot down your intended schedule for the day, so that you can make every effort to get all of your goals accomplished.

Kathleen Rotondo, a graduate of Siena College and software engineer at IBM, even likes to do this the night before so that she can make sure she’s up in time to get ready and go over her schedule once more. “I get up, make a cup of coffee, and write out my list of to-do’s in more detail, so I don't stress about my crazy schedule the night before. This way, I can feel like I start my day with a grip on it,” she says.

Sarah writes a quote to inspire her every day. “It keeps me motivated every time I open my planner,” she says.

If you make time for these few things in the morning, or even throughout your day, you’ll be rocking it all day long. Now go out there and take on life, one morning at a time!

Cara Delevingne Has Her Own Story About Being Harassed by Harvey Weinstein, & It's Terrifying

Cara Delevingne has shared her own story of being sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein, and it's just another nail in the movie producer's coffin. After eight women came forward about Weinstein harassing them, the producer was fired for his misconduct.

Cara added her story to the long list of Weinstein's offenses by posting a photo on Instagram Wednesday of a quote that read, "Don't be ashamed of your story, it will inspire others." In the caption, the actress detailed her interactions with Weinstein, and it's honestly horrifying.

When I first started to work as an actress, i was working on a film and I received a call from‎ Harvey Weinstein asking if I had slept with any of the women I was seen out with in the media. It was a very odd and uncomfortable call....i answered none of his questions and hurried off the phone but before I hung up, he said to me that If I was gay or decided to be with a woman especially in public that I'd never get the role of a straight woman or make it as an actress in Hollywood. A year or two later, I went to a meeting with him in the lobby of a hotel with a director about an upcoming film. The director left the meeting and Harvey asked me to stay and chat with him. As soon as we were alone he began to brag about all the actresses he had slept with and how he had made their careers and spoke about other inappropriate things of a sexual nature. He then invited me to his room. I quickly declined and asked his assistant if my car was outside. She said it wasn't and wouldn't be for a bit and I should go to his room. At that moment I felt very powerless and scared but didn't want to act that way hoping that I was wrong about the situation. When I arrived I was relieved to find another woman in his room and thought immediately I was safe. He asked us to kiss and she began some sort of advances upon his direction. I swiftly got up and asked him if he knew that I could sing. And I began to sing....i thought it would make the situation better....more professional....like an audition....i was so nervous. After singing I said again that I had to leave. He walked me to the door and stood in front of it and tried to kiss me on the lips. I stopped him and managed to get out of the room. I still got the part for the film and always thought that he gave it to me because of what happened. Since then I felt awful that I did the movie. I felt like I didn't deserve the part. I was so hesitant about speaking out....I didn't want to hurt his family. I felt guilty as if I did something wrong. I was also terrified that this sort of thing had happened to so many women I know but no one had said anything because of fear.

A post shared by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne) on

She began by recalling a phone call Weinstein made to ask her if she slept with any of the women she'd been out with in the press. Cara said she "hurried off the phone" because of how uncomfortable it was. A couple years later, when she had a meeting with a director and Weinstein for one of his films, Tulip Fever (which she later appeared in),she was asked to stay and chat with Weinstein after the director left, and eventually Weinstein's assistant encouraged her to go to his hotel room. "At that moment I felt very powerless and scared but didn't want to act that way hoping that I was wrong about the situation," Cara wrote.

Cara said she and Weinstein walked in to find another woman in the hotel room, and it only got worse from there. "He asked us to kiss and she began some sort of advances upon his direction. I still got the part for the film and always thought that he gave it to me because of what happened," she wrote. Cara said being in the movie after the experience felt wrong and she didn't know if she should come forward because of Weinstein's family.

Along with this story, Cara posted another quote: "The devil whispered in my ear, 'you're not strong enough to withstand the storm.' Today I whispered in the devils ear, 'I am the storm.'" In the caption, she expressed how relieved she felt to finally tell her story.

"I want women and girls to know that being harassed or abused or raped is NEVER their fault and not talking about it will always cause more damage than speaking the truth," she wrote. "I am relieved to be able to share this....i actually feel better and I'm proud of the women who are brave enough to speak....this isn't easy but there are strength in our numbers." Cara concluded that in every industry, including Hollywood, men abuse their power and women must come forward to stop it.

Cara's bravery to speak out about this situation is admirable. I can only imagine what all of these women dealt with and am thankful Cara isn't afraid to use her voice to encourage others to do the same.

This Instagram Account Is Basically the New Dr. Pimple Popper, & It's Amazingly Gross

For some wild reason, the internet loves watching pimples and blackheads get squeezed and popped. As someone who faints at even the slightest sight of a pimple, blood, piercing or literally anything to do with the body, this trend is not for me.

Lo and behold, there’s a new trend taking the place of Dr. Pimple Popper, and even though it might be slightly better, i.e. no blood, I still can’t stomach it. But maybe you can! Presenting everyone's favorite new Instagram account, @tweezist.

This anonymous user tweezes her own legs hairs and hairs from a friend’s beard. There are about 150 of these videos where the extremely zoomed-in camera catches the tweezer pulling all sorts of ingrown hairs.

Maybe it’s satisfying, and maybe it's your new obsession...but me? I’m out!

Rose McGowan Was Suspended From Twitter After Speaking Out About Harvey Weinstein & Ben Affleck

Actress Rose McGowan found herself suspended from Twitter Wednesday night for tweets regarding the Harvey Weinstein scandal. McGowan, who was revealed as one of Weinstein's victims in the New York Times article that exposed the producer's decades of harassment, has been vocal about Weinstein since the news broke.

In one of her tweets, she also called out actor Ben Affleck, telling him to "f--k off." McGowan claimed Affleck knew of Weinstein's actions all along. (Affleck has been at the center of his own groping controversy this week.)

McGowan was suspended from Twitter for 12 hours. She took to Instagram after being notified of her suspension. "There are powerful forces at work," she wrote. McGowan also asked her followers to help carry on the message and share their voices.

TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME. THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK. BE MY VOICE. #ROSEARMY #whywomendontreport

A post shared by Rose McGowan (@rosemcgowan) on

Twitter users were outraged over McGowan's suspension, with many wondering why a woman speaking out about sexual harassment was blocked when many users who spew hate speech are not.

On Thursday, the social media platform sent out a tweet explaining that McGowan was suspended for sharing a private phone number in one of her tweets and her account had been unlocked after the tweet was deleted.

McGowan's voice is helpful for women and men in and out of Hollywood that have been victims of sexual assault. More power to Rose for refusing to stay silent.

The Internet Can't Stop Making Fun of What Bella Hadid Said About Sneakers

Bella Hadid appeared in a video for Complex magazine, and the interview was anything but fetch. The supermodel went sneaker shopping for the latest episode of a recurring Complex series, Cosmopolitan reports. She talked her Nike Cortez campaign, her extensive shoe collection, and…homeboys?

To summarize, Bella called just about everything "dope" or "fresh," and pretty much sounded like a middle-aged mother trying to sound cool to her teenage kids.

"For me, I feel like girls look so sexy in tennis shoes. I think it's the dopest thing you could wear," the model said. "Sneakers on a man is definitely the first thing I look at, so if you're going to have a dope shoe both guys and girls can wear, I mean, come on, matching shoes? That's dope."

Bella was then asked about her sneaker turn-offs, and she pointed out specific styles that pique her interest. "If homeboy's coming through with these, it's quiet for him, but if he comes through with these…" She pointed to a Nike Air Max on the wall, "Homeboy's going to, like, get it." Is that a good thing?

Without meaning to, Bella created a new catchphrase, and the internet had a field day in her Twitter mentions.

Many users found the interview to be humorous, but what some saw as awkward, others saw as controversial.

From "undercover cop" to "culture vulture," the responses were overwhelmingly negative. One thing Twitter could agree on is that the interview was cringe-worthy.

But that didn't stop people from stealing the supposed sneakerhead's lingo.

Sorry, Bella, but it looks like your footwear opinions aren't as "dope" as your fashion sense.

Demi Lovato Says She Fell in Love With Joe Jonas During This Moment in 'Camp Rock 2'

Demi Lovato may leave fans wondering about her potential feelings for pal Nick Jonas, but she's not afraid to share the moment that her first JoBro-mance began. While watching scenes from Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2, the singer reminisced on her short-lived love affair with former Disney Channel costar Joe Jonas.

Days before the release of her upcoming documentary, Simply Complicated, the star has blessed YouTube with a series of childhood videos, Cosmopolitan reports. After revisiting her days as a pageant queen, Demi admitted when she first started burnin' up for her famous ex.

Her close friend Matthew Scott asked, “Did you have a crush on him, like, this whole time?”

“Oh, yeah,” Demi said, without a second of hesitation.

Camp Rock fans know that Mitchie Torres fell deeper in love with Shane Gray when he first serenaded her with "Gotta Find You." Turns out, this is also the scene when Demi caught feelings for Joe IRL.

“Oh my God, wait,” she said when Joe and his guitar came on screen. “This moment I frickin’ fell in love with him.” Demi gushed over the pair's first kiss and laughed at their "like a month" long relationship.

She later said that she loves her past, and her friends agree that she has always been the same awesome person. All around it's the perfect preface to her documentary, which premieres Tuesday, Oct. 17, on YouTube.

Nice try, Demi, but this trip down memory lane will not distract your Lovatics. Have you, or have you not, also caught the lovebug for Nick?

Paris Plans to Phase Out Gas & Diesel Cars by 2030

Get excited, inhabitants of planet Earth, because Paris is taking major leaps forward in the effort to cut down on greenhouse gases! According to Business Insider, Paris City Hall announced on Thursday that authorities plan to ban petrol- (gasoline) and diesel-fueled cars by 2030.

Considering that the French capital will be hosting the Olympic Games in the summer of 2024, the urge to end gas-guzzling cars couldn't have come at a better time. The country is aiming to make the switch to electric vehicles, making a positive impact on the reduction of particle pollution in the air. France has even set a target date of 2040 to end cars to dependent on fossil fuels, according to Insider.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases," said Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for transport policy. "Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers...so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030," he told France Info radio, Insider reports.

This is a major step forward in an effort to be kinder to Mother Nature and protect the planet from transport-related pollution. Major props to Paris!

A Bunch of Pro Sports Teams Aren't Staying At Trump Hotels Anymore & It's Kinda Obvious Why

0
0

In the wake of Trump's Twitter beef with Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry and the NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, The Washington Post released findings from a recent survey they conducted across the four major sports leagues in the United States. The conclusion? A majority of these professional sports leagues and teams want nothing to do with Trump's hotels anymore. (*pretends to be shocked*)

In their survey, The Post reached out to 123 teams, received 105 responses and reported that not one team has confirmed its players stay at Trump properties. The Post also reports that out of the 17 teams across the four leagues that have stayed in Trump hotels previous years, a whopping 16 teams (at least) are no longer customers. (Yikes)

It's important to note, however, that NFL teams don't typically stay at luxury hotels, The Post reports. A majority of the professional sports teams that did business with Trump hotels came from the National Basketball Association, spending tens of thousands of dollars mostly at the Trump SoHo location. Their business began to change in June of 2015 when Trump joined the presidential race, striking unease in players due to Trump's blatant issues with immigration, as well as stories of law enforcement's treatment of African Americans circulating the media.

In an interview with The Post this week, Warriors coach Steve Kerr made a comment about the recent trend. "The president has seemingly made a point of dividing us as best he can. He continually offends people, and so people don’t want to stay at his hotel. It’s pretty simple." The Warriors stopped staying at Trump SoHo in 2016, according to the survey.

While some of the teams offered up reasons other than politics for no longer frequenting Trump's hotels, such as travel difficulties, some players have made their own choice to not stay in Trump's hotels in recent years and have even made statements suggesting their reasoning had to do with Trump himself.

"I'm proud to not stay in Trump hotels," said Milwaukee Bucks Jabari Parker to Sporting News last November. "I don't support someone who endorses hate on other people. He ran his campaign on hate. He's attacked everything that I am and believe."

"You can draw your own conclusions," said Los Angeles Dodger's Adrian Gonzalez, who chose not to stay there with his team back in May 2016, to the Los Angeles Times. "They’re probably right."

If there's one conclusion that's for sure, it's that Trump's businesses are losing major buzz and major dollars from what used to be some of his biggest patrons. (And that's not fake news)

'Game of Thrones' Star Jason Momoa Once Made a Disgusting Joke About Raping Women

0
0

Since the news about Harvey Weinstein’s deplorable behavior broke, it seems that stories accusing male celebs of sexual assault, sexual harassment and inappropriate comments have emerged every day. And today was no different. A video of Jason Momoa—who played Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones and will star as Aquaman in the upcoming Justice League—joking about raping women resurfaced.

The footage, which is from a 2011 San Diego Comic-Con panel, shows Momoa answering questions with several of his Game of Thrones costars. In response to a question, Momoa says, “I love [fantasy] because there’s so many things you can do, like rip someone’s tongue out of their throat and…rape beautiful women, and get away with it.” Momoa’s costars had mixed reactions to his disgusting comment; Kit Harrington buried his face in his hands, and Emilia Clarke attempted to laugh it off (while still looking uncomfortable).

Simply put, this is unacceptable. There is never a good reason to joke about rape. Ever. And it is troubling to me that many people, including adult men, still can’t grasp that concept. While Momoa didn’t do anything criminally wrong (that we know of), his words are still disturbing and indicative of a culture in which rape and sexual assault are not always handled with the gravitas they require.

Thankfully, people are taking steps every day, no matter how small, to put an end to this troubling culture. We have to remain strong and stand up to this kind of awful behavior when we see it.

Trump Still Doesn't Seem To Get That Puerto Ricans Are Americans

0
0

President Trump often claims that his priority is putting America first and making America great again, but just how far does that extend? He seems to be forgetting that America is larger than just his base of dedicated voters. Puerto Ricans are Americans too.

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory, which basically means that the US government controls the region but not all of the constitutional protections afforded to Americans are held by Puerto Ricans. Nonetheless, Puerto Ricans are natural-born American citizens with their president being Donald Trump.

It’s an island of over 3.4 million people and over 5 million Puerto Ricans live in the United States. As The Guardian reports, there's a massive food shortage in Puerto Rico due to the devastation Hurricane Maria caused. CNN reports that 83 percent of Puerto Rico is without power, according to the Puerto Rican government.

Over a third of the country lacks drinking water and many are dying from easily preventable illnesses. This is a matter of urgency and an emergency. Now is not the time to be talking about pulling out, instead we should be talking about doing more and doing more effectively, as Senator Dianne Feinstein pointed out.

Puerto Rico doesn’t want FEMA, the military, and First Responders to be there indefinitely either. This is a collaborative effort where we come together to prevent a humanitarian disaster. After the hurricanes that hit Florida and Texas, President Trump promised that he was with them "every single day after to restore, recover, and rebuild."

Trump's response to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria is a stark contrast. It’s time to stop thinking of each other as each other and start thinking of ourselves as what we truly are: We.

This 'Riverdale' Fan Theory Claims Betty's Mom Is a Witch, & It's Actually Not That Far-Fetched

0
0

Hold up: Riverdale's Alice Cooper, Betty Cooper’s mom, is low-key a witch, according to a fan theory. The second season of Riverdale just premiered Wednesday night, and everyone’s already making outlandish speculations. But is this theory really that preposterous?

It might have some truth to it, given that a Sabrina the Teenage Witch spinoff is in the works. Tumblr user betty-and-jughead says that Alice might be related to the Spellmans. After all, Alice’s maiden name in the Archie Comics is Smith, but we don’t know what it is on Riverdale. The Tumblr user also points out that Alice is “constantly using terms like ‘brew’ and ‘banish’ and ‘witching hour’.” Could her vocabulary be related to her witchy past, or is it just a coincidence?

BuzzFeed goes even further by suggesting that Polly Cooper’s baby could be Sabrina Spellman. Say what?

The BuzzFeed video elaborates, “In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina at 16, witches are able to choose between being baptized during a satanic ritual, or skipping out on it to live a life as a mortal.” It says Alice may have chosen to undergo this satanic ritual to remain a witch, but Hal Cooper convinced her to raise Betty and Polly as mortals. Uh, good thing, because I wouldn’t want to see Dark Betty casting any spells.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, Jon Goldwater, the executive producer of Riverdale and the upcoming Sabrina spinoff, told fans at New York Comic Con that they've “started casting for Sabrina the character. You’ll be able to meet her soon.” Maybe a crossover will give a glimpse of the other supernatural aspects of the comics.

After all, Entertainment Weekly has already explained that the new Sabrina show will include more of the occult undertones featured in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic. Executive producer of Riverdale and comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that Sabrina might have a “potential appearance” on Riverdale.

*If* Alice is secretly a witch, does this mean that Betty’s secret, hot AF brother could be a warlock? I mean, he wasn’t raised by the Coopers, so he may have found his spellbinding abilities on his own.

Clearly, we’re going to have to rewatch every episode of Riverdale to thoroughly research this developing theory.

Hillary Clinton Is Giving Harvey Weinstein Campaign Contributions To Charity

0
0

Hillary Clinton recently shared that she plans to give Harvey Weinstein’s contributions to her campaign to charity: “There’s no doubt about it,” she said in a CNN interview earlier today about the decision.

If you aren’t familiar with the Harvey Weinstein scandal, here’s a quick recap: Exactly one week ago, the New York Times released an expose revealing that Hollywood film producer and seven-time Tony Award winner Harvey Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment—not just once, or twice, but countless times—by over a dozen women. Since then, he’s been fired.

According to Bloomberg, Weinstein recently quit the board of the Robin Hood Foundation, New York City's largest poverty-fighting organization. He's also been an active supporter and contributor to the Democratic Party and its recent presidential campaigns. According to Business Insider, Weinstein has contributed over 26,000 dollars to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. It was only on Monday afternoon that Clinton broke her silence about the scandal:

Her initial silence and recent response has drawn criticism and been deemed as inadequate from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Former president Barack Obama, who also received a significant share of campaign contributions from Weinstein (and whose daughter, Malia, interned for Weinstein's company during her gap year), has also not yet spoken out against the Harvey Weinstein revelations.

Many Hollywood celebrities have already spoken out against Harvey Weinstein.

People in positions of power have the responsibility and the ability to speak out for what’s right. Silence is not golden.

A GOP Senator Asked Trump If He Was 'Recanting His Oath' To Protect The First Amendment After His Latest Twitter Tirade Over The Media

0
0

President Donald Trump is known to call any news he doesn’t approve of “fake news.” He uses the term so frequently that he told Mike Huckabee he thinks it’s the greatest term he’s come up with. However, for one GOP senator his latest attack came too close to infringing upon constitutional rights.

Trump's latest attack was aimed at NBC because Trump felt misquoted when discussing the U.S. nuclear arsenal, He, of course, took to Twitter to attack the media, wondering if their "license" should be challenged. (Notably, no one seems to know what license he is talking about.)

The Twitter rant starts out as usual, Trump complaining about how the media treats him unfairly. But then his tweets take a turn that is actually terrifying.

But, yes, to be clear: Trump is talking about trying to silence news stations based on the fact that his feelings are hurt.

And it's because of those tweets that Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican from Nebraska, released a statement calling out the President for this move.

Sasse asked the President, “Are you recanting of the Oath you took on Jan. 20 to preserve, protect, and defend the 1st Amendment?” Affirming that one of the president's primary jobs is to preserve the civil liberties of their people.

This question should’ve been asked a long time ago, when Trump first started attacking the media — like when he didn’t let the New York Times, CNN, BuzzFeed, the BBC and so many more news outlets into an informal briefing with Sean Spicer back in February because he said the media was an “enemy of the American people.” (While allowing outlets that published positive news about him in to the event.)

Sasse is providing a great example of what it means to call out your peers. In this case, it isn’t a Democrat and Republican issue; It’s an American, first amendment issue.

10 Halloween Costumes You Can Create with a Plain White T-Shirt

Trump Has Signed an Executive Order to Move His Own Health Care Plan Forward

Less than a month after the official end of the Graham-Cassidy repeal bill, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on health care on Thursday, The New York Times reports. The executive order includes a layout for less comprehensive plans available through small employers and an increase in short-term medical coverage. These cheaper plans would not cover benefits such as maternity and newborn care and prescription drugs.

Trump’s ideas likely won’t take effect until federal agencies create regulations responding to them, and because of how long this may take, the executive order is expected not to affect insurance coverage until 2019.

At a White House ceremony honoring the signing, Trump said, “With these actions, we are moving toward lower costs and more options in the health care market, and taking crucial steps toward saving the American people from the nightmare of Obamacare. This is going to be something that millions and millions of people will be signing up for, and they’re going to be very happy.”

Trump’s new vision for health care reform seems to have split the opinions of Congress members, including Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. The Times reports that while McConnell sees the new plan as an opportunity to offer “more affordable health insurance options,” Schumer believes that Trump is “using a wrecking ball to single-handedly rip apart our health care system.”

You can also count doctors and state insurance regulators among those unhappy with the proposed changes. Trump’s potential plan could lead to more expensive yet not as helpful insurance, especially for sick people. According to The Washington Post, critical policy experts believe that because young people will choose cheaper association health plans, prices for older, sicker people could drastically rise.

Although Trump’s administration hasn’t made much success in solidifying a health care plan before, this move seems that it will definitely cause some change in the country soon.

Rose McGowan Claims That Harvey Weinstein Raped Her in a New Series of Tweets

Following her brief suspension from Twitter for tweets about the Harvey Weinstein scandal, actress Rose McGowan has returned to the social media site with claims that Weinstein raped her.

PEOPLE reports that once her suspension was lifted, McGowan alleged she was raped in tweets addressed to Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. “I told the head of your studio that [Harvey Weinstein] raped me,” she wrote in her first message. “Over and over I said. He said it hasn’t been proven. I said I was proof.”

McGowan told Bezos that she had sold a script to Amazon Studios, but after sharing about her connection to Weinstein, the company planned to ignore her warnings about him. McGowan suggested in tweets that telling this story to the head of Amazon Studios led to the end of her deal with the company.

“I called my attorney and said I want to get my script back, but before I could, [Amazon] called to say my show was dead,” she said. “I am calling on you to stop funding rapists, alleged pedos and sexual harassers...Be the change you want to see in the world. Stand with truth.”

McGowan has been vocal about Weinstein's history of sexual harassment since the New York Times' initial report revealed that she was part of a 1997 settlement addressing Weinstein's hotel room encounter with an executive producer. She has come forward about her past with Weinstein alongside several other actresses, including Cara Delevingne, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow.

McGowan also retweeted a message promoting women's all-day boycott of Twitter this Friday. #WomenBoycottTwitter has been organized "in protest of women's voices being silenced."

Props to McGowan for helping to lead this fight against sexual harassment in the film industry. It's clear that she won't let anything keep her silent.

Kate Beckinsale Says That Harvey Weinstein Came Onto Her When She Was Only 17

Amidst several actresses coming forward with their experiences of Harvey Weinstein sexually harassing them, PEOPLE reports that actress Kate Beckinsale has added her own story to the mix. The Serendipity star said on her Instagram account that after the famed film producer came on to her when she was only 17 years old, her career suffered.

"I was called to meet Harvey Weinstein at the Savoy Hotel when I was 17," Beckinsale wrote alongside a photo of her young self, explaining that she was sent to his hotel room instead of a conference room. "He opened the door in his bathrobe. I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older, unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him."

I was called to meet Harvey Weinstein at the Savoy Hotel when I was 17. I assumed it would be in a conference room which was very common. When I arrived ,reception told me to go to his room . He opened the door in his bathrobe . I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older ,unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him .After declining alcohol and announcing that I had school in the morning I left ,uneasy but unscathed.A few years later he asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting .I realized he couldn't remember if he had assaulted me or not .I had what I thought were boundaries - I said no to him professionally many times over the years-some of which ended up with him screaming at me calling me a cunt and making threats, some of which made him laughingly tell people oh "Kate lives to say no to me ." It speaks to the status quo in this business that I was aware that standing up for myself and saying no to things, while it did allow me to feel uncompromised in myself, undoubtedly harmed my career and was never something I felt supported by anyone other than my family.I would like to applaud the women who have come forward , and to pledge that we can from this create a new paradigm where producers, managers, executives and assistants and everyone who has in the past shrugged and said " well, that's just Harvey /Mr X/insert name here " will realize that we in numbers can affect real change. For every moment like this there have been thousands where a vulnerable person has confided outrageous unprofessional behavior and found they have no recourse, due to an atmosphere of fear that it seems almost everyone has been living in .I had a male friend who, based on my experience, warned a young actress who said she was going to dinner with Harvey to be careful. He received a phone call the next day saying he would never work in another Miramax film ;the girl was already sleeping with Harvey and had told him that my friend had warned her off.Let's stop allowing our young women to be sexual cannon fodder, and let's remember that Harvey is an emblem of a system that is sick, and that we have work to do.

A post shared by Kate Beckinsale (@katebeckinsale) on

Beckinsale revealed that she turned down Weinstein's offer of alcohol and ultimately left the meeting unharmed. However, when she ran into Weinstein several years later, he didn't even remember what happened between them in his hotel room.

"He asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting," she said. "I realized he couldn't remember if he had assaulted or not. I had what I thought were boundaries. I said no to him professionally many times over the years—some of which ended up with him screaming at me, calling me a c*** and making threats, some of which made him laughingly tell people, 'Oh, Kate lives to say no to me.'"

The haunting story highlights a theme evident in many other women's uncomfortable encounters with Weinstein: a fear of one's career slowing down if she rejected him outright. "It speaks to the status quo in this business," Beckinsale said, "that I was aware that standing up for myself and saying no to things, while it did allow me to feel uncompromised in myself, undoubtedly harmed my career."

Truly emphasizing how actresses come to believe how fragile their status in Hollywood can be, Beckinsale applauded the women who have come forward with their own stories. "Let's stop allowing our young women to be sexual cannon fodder, and let's remember that Harvey is an emblem of a system that is sick and that we have work to do," she said at the end of her statement.

Even though it's becoming more and more difficult to hear actresses' stories of harassment from Weinstein, we need to listen to their voices to ensure that change in the treatment towards women occurs.

White House Chief of Staff Still Has a Job...Or So He Says

In a bizarre press conference on Thursday, Chief of Staff John Kelly clapped back at reports of his unhappiness in the position. "I would just offer to you that although I read it all the time pretty consistently, I'm not quitting today," he said. "And I just talked to the President. I don't think I'm being fired today." Well, it's good to know that someone in the White House is confident in his position.

Trump Plans to End Cost-Sharing Subsidies That Helped Poorer People Get Health Insurance

CNN reports that Trump will end the subsidies that allowed for lower-income Americans to buy health insurance through Obamacare. The announcement follows Trump signing an executive order to move his own health care plan forward. Until now, the subsidies' monthly payments have gone through in the current administration, but the White House will begin evaluating these payments on an individual basis. Changing this system may lead to Obamacare customers paying more for health care coverage.

Head of Amazon Studios Is Suspended After Being Accused of Sexual Harassment

Although he was mentioned in tweets from Rose McGowan claiming that she was raped by Harvey Weinstein, head of Amazon Studios Roy Price was put on a leave of absence after allegedly making obscene comments to a TV producer. CNN says that producer Isa Hackett, who works on the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle, tried to turn down Price when he repeatedly made lewd comments to her in 2015.

Even though the incident was previously reported, Hackett completed an on-the-record interview with a Hollywood Reporter writer about her experience, which obviously caught Amazon's attention. Hackett was inspired to share her story after so many women came forward about their sexual harassment experiences with Weinstein. "I hope we all continue to inspire each other and ultimately create change," she said.

What to look out for...

We may quote it on the daily, but today is officially Treat Yo Self Day! The famous expression was featured in a Parks and Recreation episode that aired on Oct. 13, 2011. Getting to treat yourself on a Friday? Perfect!
