16 Reasons Having a Lame Social Life is Actually the Best

$

Maybe you think your social life is boring compared to everyone else's because you're not drinking Thursday through Sunday every week or out partying at the club. But the truth? Having a so-called "boring" social life is sometimes actually the best.

1. You never have to wake up with a hangover

If you don't overdo it, then there's nothing to fear in the morning.

2. Low-key drinking > crazy nights out

Literally nothing is better than Netflix and wine with your besties, obviously.

3. Sitting at home with your cat is the best

Nobody else will sit through hours of Gossip Girl reruns with you.

5. You know who your friends are

Best part about not partying with a different crowd every week? You know who your true friends are, and you've got each others' backs.

6. You can actually wake up before 3 p.m. on Saturdays

And you can use that extra time to go the gym, do an art project or get a head start on your final project!

7. You have plenty of "me" time

And nobody is better company, right?

8. Your sleep schedule ROCKS

It's a wonder what not staying out drinking until 5 a.m. can do for you.

9. You're saving a ton of money

You never wake up in the morning, check your bank statement and then cry yourself back into a nap. Because you know what you spend, and you aren't constantly out at bars and restaurants draining the bank.

10. Your friends look to you for go-to shows, books, and movies

While they were out dancing, you were reading five books and finishing several TV series. You know what's good, what sucks and what's in-between, so you're like the media and pop culture guru.

11. You can laugh at your friends' stories without horror flashbacks

Listening to them talk about how Jon threw up in not one, but TWO bathrooms is hilarious, but you didn't have to actually see it!

12. You don't overdo it with any particular alcohol

Unlike your friends, you don't need to religiously avoid Jose Cuervo or Captain Morgan, because you don't drink enough to be scarred by a particular brand.

13. You never have to procrastinate

Boring social life? More like you've got more time to do final projects ahead of time and to actually proofread your essays instead of just saying you did.

14. You can see it all on social media anyway

With Snapchat, you don't even need to attend a party/concert/outing in order to feel like you're there.

15. Extroverted? Introverted? Who cares?

You can be the outgoing introvert you're meant to be because you're not constantly tired from all the party drama. When you're ready to chill, your core group of friends is ready to have a boring-but-fun day with you.

16. You're livin' the Gilmore Girls lifestyle

Night in, watching movies and eating Chinese food with your mom? Sounds like another Friday night.

Maybe other people think the 154th Snapchat of you in your PJs at 10 p.m. on a Saturday drinking champagne, watching The Vampire Diaries and hanging with your cat sounds boring, but to you, that's an ideal night. So let them have their fun because deep down, you know your "boring" social life is actually the best.

Taylor Swift Will Perform 'Reputation' Songs at Two December Concerts

We’re nearly at the one-month countdown till the release of Taylor Swift’s long-awaited album Reputation on November 10. Despite the secrecy with which Swift has handled this album and its singles, fans will soon have a chance for an in-person insight into this new phase of Swift’s career. Cosmopolitan says that the star will perform at two major events before Christmas. In the words of T. Swift herself, I’m so “ready for” this.

Swift is scheduled to perform at the 99.7 Now Poptopia concert on December 2 in San Jose, Calif. If you needed more proof that we’re nearing Swift’s next touring era, she’s set to be the event’s headliner. Audience members can also expect performances from Ed Sheeran, Niall Horan, Fifth Harmony and more.

Swifties' holiday season has the potential to be even better, thanks to Swift's appearance at the B96 Chicago Jingle Bash on December 7. Fifth Harmony is also included in this show's lineup, along with Sabrina Carpenter and the Backstreet Boys.

Given how epic Swift's 1989 tour was, the all-but-unannounced Reputation tour will probably hit an entirely new level, especially with Swift's...interesting new themes. These December performances will likely give a great sneak peek into what that tour will resemble, and some Swift fans clearly can't wait.

I was already looking forward to the Christmas season, but the return of Swift onstage just made me even more eager.

Should You Be Best Friends With Your SO?

In most relationships, it’s pretty normal to be good friends with your SO. From having similar interests to never having a dull moment, most times it’s even expected and it would be weird if you weren’t friends with your love. But do you have to go farther than that? From farting in front of each other to having no other super close friends, is it a must to be best friends with your significant other? We spoke with some experts and collegiettes to figure out the pros and cons of having bae be your BFF.

Pros:

According to Lesli Doares, marriage and relationship coach, it is important to be friends with your significant other because romantic love ebbs and flows. There won’t always be super romantic moments and you want to be able to stay connected on multiple levels and being friends allows for this. How you define “best friend” also matters. You should be able to count on your significant other to have your back and be your support in whatever you are facing, so if that is your definition of a best friend, then yes, your SO should be.

Related: 5 Things That Shouldn’t Matter If You’re With the Right Person

Abby Burns, a senior at The College of New Jersey, also agrees with this. “My boyfriend is definitely one of my best friends, and I think it’s great!” She explains that whether it’s making each other laugh or sharing similar interests, she knows that she can be comfortable around him no matter what. When you are in a relationship, you want to be with someone who you get along with and enjoy.

That’s why for Alaina Leary, a second-year graduate student at Emerson College, she put her friendship with her girlfriend above all. She said because she and her girlfriend “developed a strong foundation of friendship first,” it helped them together through difficult times. Whenever they are fighting, she puts their friendship first, “which may seem like a weird thing to say,” Alaina says, “but when I divorce romance from the equation, it makes it easier for me to see when I'm being silly or inconsiderate and realize that being together is more important than whatever dumb thing we're fighting about.”

Laura L. Ryan, family and relationship therapist, agrees that it’s important to be able to separate the two sides: friendship and love. She believes that we as a society have all of these myths about relationships and we expect our partners to be able to predict our every need, be our soulmate, have all of the same preferences, have an identical sense of humor, have the same sexual desires and understand us in a way that no one else can. In short, we as a society believe that our lovers need to be our best friend all the time. But in reality, while it is important to be best friends in one sense, it is extremely important to have a more sensual relationship as well, otherwise, it could be disastrous for your relationship.

Related: How to Stay Independent While in a Relationship

Cons:

Like Ryan says, being able to have a life outside of your relationship is important. That is why one of the major cons of being best friends with your SO is that you have no one else to turn to if something goes sour. Alaina also agrees with this. She believes that there's a lot of stigma around having your SO be your best friend and you should maintain other relationships outside your dating life. “This is super important to me, as an independent feminist,” she said. Although she loves her girlfriend very much, she never wants her to become her entire life. Being able to maintain other relationships outside of her along with all of the other things she does is crucial to her and her girlfriend’s wellbeing.

Chloe Adams, a senior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, believes there is also a downside to your SO being your BFF, if not done right. “I've definitely noticed that couples who spend 100 percent of their free time together either don't have very healthy relationships or they burn out really fast,” she says. Ryan also agrees. “I think it's important to get many of our needs met through our partner, but also to spread our needs around appropriately,” she says. “So whether that is asking a classmate to help with a problem or talking to your sister instead of your SO, you should be looking at the strengths and weaknesses of your partner and your relationship and adjust your expectations about the level of friendship accordingly.” So although your SO may be your “person,” it’s crucial to maintain other close relationships in order to keep that relationship healthy.

The verdict?

As most people would say, it’s expected that you are best friends with your SO to some extent. You have to trust them, talk to them about your problems, and overall, just enjoy your time with them. But you must never forget that the most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself. And you are not alone in that belief. According to Lindsey Cummins, CEO of Winq — a social app for millennials, 27 percent of users tell their SOs everything, BUT 89 percent say that “me time” is a must, and seeing your SO all the time is unhealthy. So as long as you maintain a healthy balance, there is absolutely nothing wrong with knowing that your SO is your person.

Mike Pence Just Left a NFL Game Because Some Players Knelt During the National Anthem

NFL players have caught the nation's attention the past few weeks for beginning the #TakeaKnee trend, in which football players kneel during the national anthem at their games to reflect on racial discrimination. President Donald Trump and his administration haven't exactly been fans of taking a knee, claiming that the move equates to disrespecting the American flag and the national anthem. Vice President Mike Pence has taken another vocal stance against taking a knee, choosing to leave a Sunday football game when some players knelt during the national anthem, CNN reports.

Alongside his wife, Pence was attending a game between the Indiana Colts and the San Francisco 49ers at Indianapolis's Lucas Oil Stadium. The former governor of Indiana left the stadium after several 49ers players knelt during "The Star-Spangled Banner." Colin Kaepernick, who first brought attention to kneeling during the anthem, was previously a quarterback for the 49ers.

"I left today's Colts game because [President Trump] and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem," Pence posted on Twitter. "At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve, and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us."

"I stand with Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our Flag and our National Anthem," Pence said at the end of his official statement. He then shared a photo of himself and his wife Karen standing during the game's national anthem, but when comparing the photo to a selfie Pence shared earlier, it seems that one of the photos was taken on a different day.

Although Pence implies he acted independently in leaving the game, Trump tweeted a response to the event shortly after, saying, "I asked Pence to leave [the] stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and Karen."

Regardless of the political message Pence emphasized by leaving the game, Colts fans are expected to react negatively to his decision. Sunday's game honored former Colt Peyton Manning, who will be inducted into the team's Ring of Honor and see his jersey number retired during halftime. Fans suggest that Pence leaving the game early overshadowed Manning's moment in the spotlight.

Neither the football teams nor Manning has officially commented on Pence's decision yet.

Hurricane Nate Weakens to a Tropical Storm After Killing 22 in Central America & Hitting the United States

Hurricane Nate has weakened to a tropical depression after hitting Biloxi, Miss., as a Category One hurricane on Saturday night, NBC News reports.

As of 7 a.m. Sunday morning, Nate had reached a sustained wind speed of 45 mph. It hit Louisiana and made a second landfall in Mississippi early Sunday morning. Despite the initial worries of threats from yet another hurricane and four states—Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and certain counties in Florida—declaring a state of emergency, no casualties were reported in Mississippi. The area still faces the possibility of flash flooding and strong winds.

"We are very fortunate this morning and have been blessed," Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said at a press conference. "Some damage has been done particularly to the individual homes that are on the bay and in the areas that the surge caused the primary damage."

Pressure has been lifted in other areas as well. According to ABC News, the National Weather Service has cancelled New Orleans' hurricane warning, and a citywide curfew has been lifted. A notable amount of customers in Mississippi and Alabama are without power, while the latter's Dauphin Island has experienced broken power lines and a road blocked by over four feet of water.

Although it seems that Nate will leave less of an impact on the States, the storm blew through Central America earlier this week, killing a total of 22 people. Seven people are reported dead in Costa Rica and 15 in Nicaragua are dead. 15 Costa Ricans are reportedly also missing.

The storm is expected to move through the Tennessee Valley and Appalachian Mountains by Monday.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump Defends Towel Toss, Nelly Arrested After Rape Allegations & the McVegan Burger

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump Defends His Towel Toss

After getting criticized for the laidback way he tossed out paper towels to victims of Puerto Rico's Hurricane Maria, President Donald Trump is trying to explain himself, which we all know usually doesn't go that well. "They had these beautiful, soft towels. Very good towels,"Trump said in an televised interview with Mike Huckabee. "And I came in and there was a crowd of a lot of people. And they were screaming and they were loving everything. I was having fun. They were having fun."

Of course POTUS had to stay on brand in this explanation, saying, "So next day they said, 'Oh it was so disrespectful to the people...The media is really, I think one of the greatest of all terms I've used in fake."

At this point, I really don't expect much of what Trump says to veer far away from him calling something fake, do you?

Rapper Arrested After Rape Allegations

The rapper Nelly was taken into custody on Saturday after a woman informed police early that morning that he raped her on his tour bus, CNN says. He was arrested on the charge of rape in the second-degree after police investigated the incident, but was released several hours later. Hours after performing at Washington state's White River Amphitheater, Nelly took to Twitter to claim his innocence, saying, "I assure you I will be vindicated."

McDonald's Is Trying to Go Vegan

There are some things we definitely don't need in life. A McDonald's chain in Finland trying out a vegan burger is one of them. The Tampere, Finland, location is selling the soy-based McVegan patty from Oct. 4 to Nov. 21, but there are currently no plans to bring the burger to the United States. The healthier product joins the vegetarian burgers available in several other countries, including Germany and India.

What to look out for...

Sure, today is Columbus Day, but it's also National Kick Butt Day. If you need any motivation to finish a paper, chase down a goal or just live today to its fullest, use today's meaning to inspire you!

7 Signs You’re in Love

$
0
0

For most of us, love is a far-off, abstract concept. Even in a long-term, committed relationship, the existence of love can be difficult to spot. What is the difference between strong feelings and true love? Is love at first sight actually a possibility? The answer to these questions may be different for everyone. It depends on your personality, your relationship style and a multitude of other unique factors. If you have found yourself questioning whether or not you are truly in love, ask yourself if these signs apply to your relationship.

1. You totally trust your partner

All healthy relationships require a high level of trust. Whether it's just a friendship or something more, everyone wants to be able to trust the people that they are closest to in their lives. Jay Hurt, author of The 9 Tenants of a Successful Relationship, says, "Trust is extremely important in any serious relationship and definitely something that people should be aware of before deciding if they are in love or not.”

If you are unable to trust your partner with little, daily things, how can you trust them with your heart? If you are questioning whether or not you are in love, ask yourself if you would be able to really trust your partner with anything and everything. If the answer is yes, you're one step closer to being in love.

2. You and your partner have established an agreement of commitment

In today’s society, the importance of commitment is often overlooked. Hook-up culture is rampant throughout our generation and due to this infatuation, many of us rarely feel a need to settle down or define the relationship. This is totally fine if that is what you want, but it can be hard to be truly in love with someone if you aren’t committed to one another.

One student, Karen Smith*, a sophomore at the University of Florida, says that an establishment of commitment was actually a big part of her realization that she was in love with her boyfriend. “Knowing that my boyfriend was committed to only me and never having to worry about losing him to another person made me feel safe and made it easier to know that I was in love,” she says. This is a common feeling for many collegiettes, especially in an age where commitment is not that popular.

3. There is a high level of intimacy (that isn’t just sexual)

It isn’t uncommon for people to confuse sexual attraction with love. Hurt says that in order to truly have love, you must have a level of intimacy that goes further than just sexual intimacy. This intimacy is something similar to that of what you might have with your closest friends. Hurt describes this intimacy as “something that has grown the relationship even deeper.”

Non-sexual intimacy can come in many forms and thus, can be hard to identify. When you've reached a high level of intimacy with someone, you'll feel truly comfortable with them. Little things like sharing the bed or confiding in them will no longer be uncomfortable but will be a typical part of your day together. True intimacy can be found when you and your partner start to feel like one person, rather than two separate people, unattached from one another.

Related: 7 Love Mistakes to Avoid This Year

4. You find yourself wanting to share experiences with your partner, rather than alone

When you are truly in love, you will find that every experience you go through is enhanced by sharing it with your partner. Good or bad, you feel a strong desire to have them by your side, rather than explaining the event to them later.

Leah Pignataro, a junior at the University of Florida, believes that this concept definitely rings true. She says it is easy to know that you are in love “when you look forward to doing things together instead of doing it alone and telling them about it.”

Wanting to share experiences with your partner doesn’t mean that you will never need alone time — that's totally normal to need, even when you are in love. However, beginning to factor in your partner when thinking of future events and having difficulty imagining going through certain things without them is definitely a sure sign of love.

5. You feel a void when you and your partner are apart

Anyone who has ever been bitten by the love bug has been introduced to a whole new level of missing her partner. Hurt describes this voided feeling as going “beyond missing them.” He says that “you feel like they should be there.”

Realizing that you and your partner have become so close that you feel as though you are missing a part of yourself when you are not together is a sure way to know that you’re  in love.

6. You have no issue being truly selfless when it comes to your relationship

Humans are selfish by nature; it's simply a fact. Even if you do selfless deeds often or strive to make the world a better place, we are designed to put our own needs first. The only thing that can really change this predisposition is the presence of love.

When you fall in love, your partner becomes just as important as yourself. When out of love, people must make sure that their needs are met on their own — no one else is responsible for making sure that you are happy. However, in a real relationship where you are both in love, both partners are getting their needs met because both are making sure that their partner is happy.

7. You seek comfort in each other

While being comfortable with your partner is certainly important, seeking them for comfort goes far beyond that. Rachel Kline, a senior at the University of Florida, says that one way she knew she was in love with her long-term boyfriend was when they both began to seek comfort in each other.

When you fall in love, your partner becomes your go-to person for nearly everything. They're the person you want to talk to when you find out exciting news, the person you want to cuddle up to after a long day and the person you want to talk our all of your problems with.

These signs are certainly not the only ways that someone can know they are in love. Love is a feeling. It's not something rational or easy to explain with facts or examples. More often than not, if you feel that you're in love, you very well are. However, if you find yourself questioning the sincerity of the love, you may want to consider these questions.

Trump Has an Extensive List of Demands for Congress That Could Hinder Any Deal for Dreamers

President Donald Trump provided Congress with an extensive list of demands on Sunday which could seriously hinder any sort of deal with Democrats on protecting young undocumented immigrants, commonly known as Dreamers, in the United States.

Among the list of demands includes the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico, which was a primary focus during Trump’s campaign to increase border security, according to Politico. Last month, Trump announced that he would be ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), created during the Obama administration, starting in March, which has left Congress in a whirlwind to address and remedy DACA and ultimately make it law, Politico reports.

However, this recent demand has left Democratic leaders Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Nancy Pelosi concerned, particularly after Schumer and Pelosi reached a deal with Trump over a “very productive” dinner last month that clearly excluded the building of a border wall, The New York Timesreports.

“We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” Schumer and Pelosi had said in a joint statement.

According to The New York Times, Trump had quickly disputed Schumer and Pelosi’s statement, saying that no deal had actually been reached. After receiving Trump’s demands on Sunday, Schumer and Pelosi released another joint statement, arguing that the demands “went beyond the reasonable border security measures” that the two Congressmembers had agreed to, Politico reports.

“The administration can't be serious about compromise or helping the Dreamers if they begin with a list that is anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans. The list includes the wall, which was explicitly ruled out of the negotiations. If the president was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so,” the two Democrats said.

“The president’s position has been that he’s called on Congress to come up with a permanent solution and a fix to this process,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said last week.

The other demands on Trump’s list consist of the hiring of 10,000 new immigration agents, the halt of federal grants to sanctuary cities and the requirement for employers to use the E-Verify program to ensure that the potential employee is authorized to work, according toThe New York Times. Furthermore, the list demands that tougher laws be put in place for those seeking asylum in the United States, stricter policies in regards to children coming across the border to flee violence in Central America and the prohibition of families sponsoring extended family members (whereas the demands specify that only individuals can only sponsor their spouses and children).

Acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Thomas D. Homan, said a significant increase in the number of agents and other federal resources would allow for a “crackdown on immigration violators that had been difficult in the past,” according to The New York Times.

Trump also wants 370 additional immigration judges, as well as 1,000 additional attorneys at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and more detention space so that children arriving at the border can be held, processed and quickly returned if they do not qualify to stay longer, according to Politico.

“Now is the time for Congress to adopt these immigration priorities,” the president’s legislative director, Marc Short, told reporters on Sunday during a conference call, adding that action must be taken now before illegal immigration increases.

In a letter to Congress, Trump told lawmakers that the list of demands “must be included as part of any legislation addressing” DACA because without them, he said illegal immigration and chain migration, which severely and unfairly burden American workers and taxpayers, will continue without end,” Politco reports.

According to The New York Times, the list of demands was drafted by a few agencies and departments, with Stephen Miller, the president’s top policy adviser, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions among the head officials behind the demands. Miller and Sessions have long called for more aggressive policies regarding illegal immigration and the handling of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

While immigration advocates have criticized Trump’s list of demands and will fight to ensure that Democrats only accept a deal without these demands, they are working under a strict deadlines to assist Dreamers who will begin to lose their protections in March.

Why Indigenous Peoples' Day Should be a Nationally Recognized Holiday

Austin, Texas has recently joined the group of cities that decided to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, according to TIME and it’s pretty clear why. More cities are celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day and rejecting the famed controversial holiday — it's because Christopher Columbus committed genocide and enslaved millions of indigenous people when he came to America.

You might know Columbus Day as being the day that Columbus “discovered” America. However, as many activists and historians are quick to point out, America wasn’t his to discover.

While most Americans are taught that Columbus discovered America, he really didn’t. Seeing as it was already discovered by the Native American people who had already inhabited this country. That’s like Donald Trump thinking that he invented the word “fake,” but in reality others had been using it well before him.

While there are plenty of people who, unfortunately, want to keep Columbus Day around, celebrating an individual who committed genocide, rape and other heinous crimes against countless Native Americans is highly offensive to Native American communities. That’s like having a judge establish a day to celebrate a rapist or murderer (which should go without saying why that’s f*cked up and incredibility insulting).

Taking a day to celebrate Columbus isn’t just offensive to Native American communities—it’s harmful. To put it simple, it demeans everything that they lost just so white people could thrive.

Native American communities have endured atrocities since the conception of the United States, and it’s time for a change. Instead of looking at today as a day off work, take some time to actively celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. After all, there are plenty of ways you can celebrate indigenous people today (and beyond) without being insensitive to Native American cultures.

1. Appreciate (But Never Appropriate) Native American Languages and Culture.

Even if you aren’t a skilled linguist, learning a new language can help you appreciate a new culture. While you won’t find any Native American languages in Rosetta Stone (unfortunately), there are severalapps and websites that will help you learn about certain Native American languages and their respective cultures.

Learning a Native American language can help preserve the language. Some websites even allow you to exchange information with a pen pal.

Otherwise, you can visit a museum owned by Indigenous people or read some books by Indigenous authors in order to better educate yourself about their cultures and support Indigenous businesses.
Taking the steps to unlearn damaging myths (like the ones about Columbus) and to learn about Indigenous cultures can give you the tools to better support the people who are a part of those cultures.

2. Start a dialogue with an activist

Reaching out to an indigenous people and activists involved with those causes will help you learn how you can get involved in local movements (and how to do it respectfully when you aren't a part of a certain culture). Many activists are eager to answer any questions to those who are willing to fight for human rights within Native American communities.

Listen to local and national activists and how you can help remove offensive symbols and mascots that appropriate Native American cultures. Better yet, tweet about why #IndigenousPeopleDay matters and retweet indigenous people who are already sharing their stories.

Talking to people who are actively involved in the Native American communities will not only help you educate yourself about the past and current issues that these communities face, but it will help you learn how to be better allies to them.

3. Donate to an indigenous organization or education fund

You can help celebrate Native American communities by donating to organizations like the Native American Heritage Association or several other organizations and education funds. After all, donating to Native American communities helps these communities grow their resources, so they can continue their fight for representation.

Although the United Nations announced in 1994 that August 9 will serve as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we should devote even more time to celebrate indigenous people in the United States as well. It’s beyond frustrating that not enough United States cities recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a holiday. USA Today explains that in 1992 activists convinced the Berkeley City Council to make October 12 “Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People.” While this was a positive movement to celebrate Native American culture and defame Columbus as a monster, it isn’t enough.

It isn’t enough that a few cities in the U.S. celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, instead there's a solid movement calling for “Columbus Day" to be removed from the calendar and for Indigenous Peoples’ Day to be a nationally recognized holiday. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, the discourse around Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day should at least inspire you to think critically about the holidays we celebrate "just becaue they've always been there" and to consider the effects they might have on marginalized people whose histories are frequently ignored.

How to Build a Quality Wardrobe from Stores like Forever 21 & H&M

We’ve all probably spent our fair share of money at cheaper retailers. It’s just so hard to resist when you’re perusing Forever 21 or and everything seems to be within your budget. But then those ripped jeans you got for a steal rip in the wrong kinds of places and you’re not so shocked that the price was so low. You can still create a quality wardrobe with some pieces from these budget-friendly stores; you just have to know how to shop.

1. Stock up on going-out tops

Let’s be real — there is no need to spend excessive amounts of money on a name-brand crop top for going out. First of all, they’re normally tiny, i.e. not enough fabric to be worth that much moolah. Second, if you live in a normal college town, chances are by the end of the semester that shirt will have seen too much beer spillage and drunk late-night pizza stains to be considered “nice” by any means. For those slinky little tops, stick with stores like H&M and Forever 21, where you can buy them without worrying about the party hazards that are sure to ensue.

Forever 21 Crepe Lace-Up Top, $12.90

H&M V-neck Camisole, $24.99

2. Look for layering pieces

Layering never seems to go out of style. It’s cute and keeps us warm, but the outfits seem to involve like, ten pieces so it can be expensive. Normally a well-layered ensemble involves one or two main statement pieces, like a cute oversize cardigan or edgy leather jacket. Under these elements though, you have to (or at least should) wear something else. For t-shirts, tanks and bralettes that form the base layer of your ensemble, look at places like H&M, Target and Express. You’re barely going to see them after piling on the layers, so no worries getting some basics on the cheap.

Target A New Day Tank, $8

Express One Eleven Lightly Lined Seamless Bralette, $19.90

3. Shop around for starter business wear staples

If I’m looking for a job or working an unpaid internship, what makes you think I can afford to buy a high-end work outfit? With blazers and pants sometimes getting something personally tailored or higher-end might pay off, but as a millennial entering the workforce you might not have the 200+ bucks it takes to buy a work outfit at Banana Republic or a department store. Express offers an incredible selection of workwear basics for way less, especially if you watch the sales. You can create a head-to-toe look there, or just buy the pieces that fit you well. With the money you save you can buy a pair of biz heels that don’t make you want to scream in pain.

Express High Waisted Side Zipper Midi Pencil Skirt, $69.90

Express Slim Fit Long Sleeve Essential Shirt, $39.90

4. Buy oversized tops for what they’re worth

The oversize trend has really been taking off lately, which is fine by me because now when I’m bloated, no one’s the wiser. But honestly, if you’re spending insane amounts of money on huge t-shirts and hoodies, you should check yourself. Check yourself again if you’re buying tees or sweatshirts with holes in them for excessive amounts of cash too. I mean if you’ve got the funds, great—Urban Outfitters appreciates your business. But if you’re really just trying to be comfy and embrace this trend while you can, Etsy has great vintage pieces for low prices and of course Forever 21 has an overwhelming amount of options, even some with those *trendy* holes. UNIQLO also has a sick artist series and the Target men’s section has a lot to offer too. And the H&M and Justin Bieber collection? Oh, heck yeah.

Stadium Merch X H&M Printed Hooded Shirt, $34.99

UNIQLO SPRZ NY Poetry Graphic T-Shirt, $14.90

5. Find your way to the Target shoe aisle

I used to work at Target, and literally all of the trendy shoes are nearly identical to more expensive Steve Madden pairs. Me and my coworkers used to theorize that Target hired the same designer or something, because it’s uncanny. That being said, for shoes that you’re not planning on wearing the sh** out of, Target’s will do just fine. They look like they’re designer for a fraction of the price and give you a reason to go to Target (not that we ever really need one).

Target Merona Margo Pearl Slide Sandals, $24.99

Target Mossimo Reese Nylon Slip On Sneakers, $24.99

6. Buy all the simple dresses you want

For special occasions, spending the extra money will be worth it. But for summer dresses, simple t-shirt silhouettes or plain dresses for under jackets or sweaters you can probably find a perfectly suitable version at H&M, Express, GAP or Target.

H&M T-Shirt Dress, $14.99

Forever 21 Open-Shoulder Sweater Dress, $15.90

7. Accessorize without worry

Spending a lot of money on small pieces of jewelry or accessories just seems nonsensical to me. I highly doubt that a high-end designer plaid scarf and a plaid scarf from Target are all that different, especially to other people. And as far as jewelry you only wear once a month, what’s the point in making sure its 24K gold? The exception would probably be handbags, which are an investment in your well-being honestly, or earrings, because I’ll pay good money so that my ears don’t itch.

Forever 21 Layered Chain Necklace Set, $7.90

H&M scarf, $12.99

Maybe your whole wardrobe shouldn’t be made up of steals and deals from lower-cost stores, but with a college budget your whole wardrobe certainly can’t be all killer designer pieces either. Forever 21 and H&M have their time and place, and if you shop there wisely, you can have a wardrobe full of great options without having to take out a student loan.

People Are Not Happy About This Racially Insensitive Dove Ad

Although Dove is normally a brand that gives us some serious hope as far as diversifying the shapes, sizes and skin tones we see in beauty advertising, tons of women were calling the brand out on social media Monday for an ad that seriously seems to have missed the mark.

As Refinery29 reports, the company posted a GIF to its Facebook page over the weekend featuring a loop of a black woman reaching down and lifting up her shirt to reveal a white woman while a bottle of Dove shower gel is displayed in the lower right corner — which, many said, problematically implied that the black woman was "turning white" after using Dove soap to "clean" herself. Not a good look.

Things look even worse when you consider the fact that, as many Twitter users pointed out, soap ads have a history of being incredibly racist (including those made many years ago by Dove's own parent company, Unilever).

While the damage has already been done, the company apologized after taking down the ad over the weekend. "The visual was intended to convey that Dove body wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong and as a result offended many people," a representative from Dove told Cosmopolitan in a statement. "We are deeply sorry. We have removed the post and have not published any related content. We do not condone any activity or imagery that insults any audience. We are re-evaluating our internal processes for creating and reviewing content."

Apologizing is the first step, but let's be honest — mistakes like these can be prevented when companies with a powerful voice like Dove have women of color contributing to advertising campaigns — and in this instance, they clearly didn't.

This isn't the first time Dove has inspired a social media sh*tshow with attempts to demonstrate diversity — earlier this year, the company released bottles that were meant to be shaped like women's bodies, and it didn't go over too well either.

Taylor Swift Is Promoting Her Upcoming Album by Sliding into Her Fans' DMs

Taylor Swift is officially back: after releasing two new songs as singles for her upcoming album, Reputation, she's promoting it in the most T-Swift way possible — by lurking (hard) on her fans' social media accounts.

According to E! News, Taylor spent most of the weekend joining fans' Instagram Lives, sliding into their DMs and commenting on their photos. Of course, every single fan freaked out and took ample screenshots, because you don't just remain calm when Taylor Swift casually stalks you on Instagram.

She even answered questions about a secret 10-minute version of "All Too Well" and provided us all with the latest updates on her cats since she's been lying low for the last year:

Taylor commented this on @bestpeopleinlifearefree ‘s livestream about the 10 minute version of all too well!

A post shared by Taylor Swift Updates (@taylorswift.updates) on

MY HEART! Even though Taylor is known for doing things like showing up to a fan's wedding and inviting "Swifties" (a.k.a. her most die-hard fans) over to to her NYC apartment to hang with her and her cats, it's been awhile since she's been up to her usual antics.

In other amazing T-Swift news, the singer has also announced that she'll be giving fans not one, but *two* live shows before the end of the year in San Jose, California and Chicago. Oh, and we officially only have T-minus one month until Reputation drops on November 10th — even if she's not sliding into their DMs, Tay's fans still have tons to be excited about.

Beyoncé and Blue Ivy Went to a Friend's Wedding This Weekend and Looked ~Flawless~ Obviously

As if we needed further proof that Blue Ivy and Beyoncé are basically the most stylish mother-daughter duo of all time, the Carter family attended the wedding of some close friends over the weekend, and obviously, Bey and Blue looked nothing short of flawless.

Teen Vogue reports that the Carter fam (sans newborn twins Sir and Rumi, anyways) spent the weekend in New Orleans to attend friends Lawrence "Law" Parker's and Jessica Clemons's wedding, where Beyoncé stunned in an asymmetrical peach gown that made her look like the goddess she is. Meanwhile, as per usual, Blue Ivy wore a dress that's probably (definitely) worth more than me. The 5-year-old looked so many levels of adorable in an embroidered Mischka Aoki dress that retails for around $5,577.50 from the brand, which describes itself as a luxury couture house for children.

A post shared by Lenny S. (@kodaklens) on

This isn't the first time Blue has rocked some designer duds — the stylish toddler has been known to favor Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana looks that match her mom's. (NBD or anything.)

In any case, it looks like the Carter family had tons of fun at the wedding — and this adorable photo of Jay-Z and Blue Ivy on the dance floor is pretty much the only proof you need.

Here is the Salary You Need to be Happy, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

$

Your horoscope can often tell you a lot of things about your life, including whom you’re compatible with and how you make decisions. Why can’t your desired salary be astrologically destined as well?

If you’re stressing about what type of salary you should be aiming for, we’re here to help. Read below and find the right dollar amount to align with your happiness, as the zodiac calendar indicates.

Aries: $100,000

There’s no mistaking it: you Aries women are bold. You identify as go-big-or-go-home women, and that’s a good thing! Thus, you might need a salary that’s on the higher end in order to live the lifestyle that you desire.

Since one of your weaknesses is impatience, you’ll want to climb the corporate ladder as quickly as you can, and you won’t be afraid to negotiate for a higher salary. Sophia Walker, a senior at Bowdoin College, is a proud Aries. "Always optimistic, we can deal with setbacks because we believe in our visions!"

Taurus: $65,000

As a Taurus, your attitude leans towards serious, and this certainly applies to your career. Your job needs to be sturdy and traditional, and you hope to stay at your company of choice for several years.

Your salary should reflect your ambition and independence both in your job and personal life. You strive to “do it all,” so you should have the funds to allow you to achieve your goals.

Gemini: $50,000

Geminis are untraditional and tend to do things more sporadically. Your tendency to have varying personality traits is present in your career choices. As a result, you might make money in more unique ways and hold a couple different jobs at once. You’re also not afraid to make less money in the beginning of your career and adapt to change easily.

Isabel Calkins, a junior at NYU, notes the ability for Geminis to embrace a career straying from the linear path, as she says, "[Geminis] might make money in more untraditional ways, like freelancing or babysitting on top of a normal income."

Cancer: $60,000

Cancers are certainly part of a unique breed. You possess great company loyalty and aren’t afraid of organizational changes; however, you can sometimes be very sensitive when something affects you personally.

A salary that is too low might make you doubt your worth to a company, but one that is too high doesn’t feel right. This is a happy medium that you’re comfortable with.

Leo: $80,000

Leos are larger than life. People gravitate towards you when you walk into a room. You know what you want, and aren’t afraid to ask for it.

When it comes to your career, you like to know that you’re being appreciated for your efforts, especially when it comes to money. That acknowledgement from your boss provides you the greatest happiness of all.

Virgo: $50,000

Virgos tend to be more practical and honest. You know how much money you’ll need in order to be satisfied. You’re smart, and always take your time before considering a job offer, yet due to your passiveness, you likely won’t question a salary too early on.

As a Virgo, you define your success by the type of job you have and the extent to which you're challenged and growing in your role more than your salary. Shelly Adams, a junior at Shenandoah University, finds this true of Virgos as she says, "No matter where we are, we always know we can do better and we go for it!"

Libra: $35,000

Harmony is your middle name. As a Libra, your personality is more kind and gentle, and you always stray from conflict. When it comes to the beginning of your career, you refuse to question the salary first offered to you out of fear of appearing ungrateful.

You’re able to see the big picture when it comes to your career, and you know that with hard work and persistence, the money will eventually come.

Scorpio: $90,000

Scorpios are fierce and ambitious in all of their endeavors. You’re not afraid of a challenge, and your passion for life is undeniable.

While you certainly want a healthy work-life balance, you’re also not ashamed to admit that you’d like a higher salary too. Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds? Sydnee Marie, a second-year graduate student at Florida Atlantic University, identifies with these Scorpio qualities, saying, "I'm extremely passionate about the work I do and being sufficiently rewarded for a job well done."

Sagittarius: $75,000

You are optimistic and enthusiastic about your career, no matter your specific endeavors. You are also very honest with your peers and aren’t afraid to take risks.

You’re also honest with yourself and know that you’d like to make more money than the average person in order to feed your adventurous side. Additionally, you aren’t afraid to ask for that raise when you know that you’ve earned it because it will help you achieve your life goals.

Capricorn: $40,000

Capricorns are known to be practical and responsible. If you have the necessities while being able to do what you’re passionate about, you will be just fine. Iris Goldsztajn, an intern at Cosmopolitan, says that Capricorns are serious and goal-oriented, and feel comfortable knowing when they have the bases covered in terms of finances.

Agreeing very much with this sentiment is Micki Wagner, a student at the University of Missouri, who adds, “Capricorns are workaholics, and our happiness is found in doing a job we love more than in making a ton of money.”

Aquarius: $45,000

You are very caring and open-minded with a creative spirit. As an Aquarius, you want a career that makes an impact, but are fine with sacrificing some dollars in the beginning in order to achieve your goals.

As long as your job allows you to be the great communicator that you are and build strong relationships with your coworkers, you will be good to go.

Pisces: $55,000

Pisces women are very intuitive and sympathetic. You’re easygoing and patient by nature, which might make you gravitate towards a career with steady growth opportunities that allow you to make a direct impact on others, such as in sales.

You don’t demand a high salary, but you appreciate the ability to make performance bonuses and prove your monetary worth to your boss overtime.

Whether you'd like a higher or lower salary, it's clear that your personality traits can help to determine how you should look at your career. Your perfect salary just might be written in the stars!

HC Wake-Up Call: the ACLU Is Suing the Trump Administration Over Birth Control, High School Student Expelled for Sitting During the Pledge of Allegiance & First Lady Drama

3 States & the ACLU Are Suing the Trump Administration for Its New Birth Control Policy

ICYMI, the Trump administration is likely coming for your birth control soon via a policy that would allow employers to opt out of the requirement to cover employees' birth control. In response, the ACLU, along with California, Massachusetts and Washington state, are filing lawsuits against the Trump administration. According to BuzzFeed News, all four lawsuits challenge the new rules, which allow employers with "religious" or "moral" objections to not cover birth control in insurance policies, as discriminatory and violations of the separation of church and state.

In the meantime, 15 other states have signed a letter on Friday saying they were ready to also take action against the Trump administration, and organizations including the National Women's Law Center, the Center for Reproductive Rights and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have also said they plan to sue.

A High School Student Was Expelled After She Sat During the Pledge of Allegiance

17-year-old India Landry, a student at Windfern High School in Houston, Texas, was expelled last Thursday for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. According to Teen Vogue, Landry has been sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance for a year and a half, but Windfern principal Martha Strother told her to leave last week, and "violated her First Amendment right," according to Landry's lawyer.

"I don't think that the flag is what it says it's for, for liberty and justice and all that," Landry told KHOU, a local Houston TV station. "It's not obviously what's going on in America today."

Landry was reportedly told she could come back to school on Friday, but didn't attend due to being uncomfortable following last week's situation. She reportedly plans to return this week.

There's Some Serious Drama Brewing Between Melania and Ivana Trump

Grab some popcorn: President Trump's first wife Ivana Trump, and FLOTUS Melania Trump are involved in a very public feud over the title of "first lady." According to BuzzFeed News, during her appearance on Good Morning America, Ivana Trump said she is, "basically Trump's first wife" and the actual first lady. For reasons that are obvious, this didn't sit too well with Melania, who issued a super sassy statement in response, calling Ivana Trump's comments, "attention seeking and self-serving noise." Ouch.
