HC Wake-Up Call: Rep. Tim Murphy Quits After Abortion Controversy, Mr. Monopoly Crashes the Senate & Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milkshakes

0

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

GOP Congressman Who Reportedly Wanted Mistress to Get an Abortion Quits

HuffPost reports that Rep. Tum Murphy plans to resign from Congress after making headlines for reportedly asking his mistress to have an abortion during her pregnancy scare. House Speaker Paul Ryan shared that his resignation will go into effect on Oct. 21.

"It was Dr. Murphy's decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it," Ryan said in a statement. "We thank him for his many years of tireless work on mental health issues here in Congress and his service to the country as a naval reserve officer."

A Senate Hearing Was Crashed by Mr. Monopoly

At a Senate Banking Committee hearing for Equifax on Wednesday, a peaceful protestor chose to dress up as the board game character Mr. Monopoly. Confused? Well, at the hearing discussing Equifax's data breach, protester Amanda Werner of Americans for Financial Reform and Public Citizen, reportedly dressed up to address unfair arbitration causes.

"Arbitration is a rigged game," Werner said in a statement. "Bank lobbyists and their allies in Congress are trying to overturn the...rules so they can continue to rip off consumers with impunity."

I may not exactly understand this reasoning, but kudos to Werner for coming up with a creative way to protest.

Burger King Is Releasing a Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milkshake

Be honest: Burger King has always been inadequate when you compare it to McDonald's or Wendy's. In case a nostalgia-fueled beverage is what would persuade you to pay Burger King a visit, you'll want to know that the chain will soon introduce a Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshake. Burger King has previously experimented with a Lucky Charms milkshake, which was surprisingly successful, so cereal-flavor milkshakes may be the next big thing. Check out your local BK for this $2.99 shake!

What to look out for...

By the time you read this, we'll likely know who has received the Nobel Peace Prize. The winner will be announced in Oslo at the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

These Amazing Before & After Pictures Are Eliminating the Stigma Surrounding Acne

0
0

Let's be honest, there are a lot of before and after pictures floating around on the internet. While many are drastic, most of us are aware that they’re being used to sell us something, generally under the premise that the product will “change our lives.” Call it a healthy dose of skepticism, but I believe very few of the before and after pictures I see. With the ability to use Facetune and Photoshop on just about anything (including your waistline), it's hard to determine what's actually real.

But one must see before-and-after that’s undeniably real? Check out 22-year-old Kali Kushner’s account @myfacestory

Kushner started Accutane in 2015 and documented her journey on her Instagram. Originally, she started the account for herself, as documentation of the drastic changes that were occurring as a result of the treatment. “I honestly didn’t start the account with any idea or goal of getting noticed. I was just trying to keep track of my progress as I went through my six-month prescription of Accutane.” She still appears to be baffled at her success, and the effect that it has had on people. “I used to think it was odd because I really didn’t do anything magical—I just took Accutane and a bunch of selfies, but now I realize that the reason people are so dedicated to following my story is because nobody actually posts stuff like this."

However, the account has turned into more than just a collection of before and after pictures. Kushner is advocating to eliminate the stigma that surrounds acne. “Acne is so hush-hush and shamed in society, and having clear skin is the epitome of beauty, so if you dare have a zit or a breakout—and if you dare to take a picture of it—it’s almost like something’s wrong with you, which is so false." Instead of seeing it for what it is, a disease, many people see it as something that is controllable; which is frustrating to those struggling, who feel as though they have exhausted every opportunity and potential solution. Kushner continues, “People think you have acne because you’re dirty, or you don’t wash your face, or you’re just generally unkempt, but it’s about hormones, blood sugar, and genetics, more than anything else, and yet people look down upon it as if it’s something you’re not trying hard enough to fix, which is what I try to dispel in my Instagram."

Luckily for Kushner, she finally found the method that works for her with Accutane. The medicine didn’t come without some harsh side effects, though. “The only downside was the side effects, which, for me, made me dry literally everywhere, and made me feel achy all over, all day long, every single day. It’d take me ten minutes just to get out of bed in the morning, because my back was so sore.” Joint pain, dryness, numbness, depression, severe blistering and even seizures are all on the long list of potential side effects that come with taking the drug, so it definitely isn’t an easy solution.

Kushner has been off of Accutane for over a year and is currently focusing on reducing the appearance of her acne scars. She has been using vitamin C and a derma roller, and the results have been phenomenal.

11 month update using @banishacnescars These are my 100% untouched results in the same spot and the closest lighting I could get. I'm really pleased with how much of a difference there is in the texture and skin tone. TBH I never thought the little roller thing (aka the banisher) was actually going to work- but it did. Like a dream My skin has smoothed out a lot obviously and the tone is the most even it's EVER been, not even kidding. Again this is using it consistently for 11 months, once every two weeks. These things take time, you can't use it once or twice and expect to see immediately results- for me it took a few months! Persistence is key (Also PSA the only skincare brand I use is Banish! The watermark is now going to be on my monthly before and after because apparently pics of me have been floating around the interwebs on other companies websites- not cool man.)

Congratulations Kali, not only for not giving up hope in finding a solution but for providing a voice to those who don't have your platform!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Just Previewed Their Holiday Collection & We Are Screaming At Its Beauty

Honestly, after becoming a self-proclaimed makeup-addict, I’m unsure whether I get more excited for the holidays, or the months leading up to them when all of the top makeup brands release their limited edition holiday collections. There are times when I’m unsure if Santa or the company that gives the biggest discounts is the one who spoils me the most every Christmas.

What would another holiday be without more Anastasia Beverly Hills products? After a rocky past few months in the wake of negative reviews surrounding their highly-anticipated Subculture Palette, fans were curious to see what the brand’s next move would be. ABH is well know for high-selling, top-rated products like their Modern Renaissance Palette, glow kits and liquid lipsticks. While, in my personal opinion, the Subculture Palette wasn’t a horrible palette, it certainly paled in comparison to the usual high quality the brand puts out.

ABH announced the Prism Palette as part of the collection, and many fans were hopeful that the brand re-evaluated their formula after hearing the backlash from the Subculture Palette. The Prism Palette is a collection of jewel-toned, deep, holiday-themed shades, in the brand’s signature 14-pan style. Five shades are metallic, while the rest are matte, ensuring that you can create a variety of richly pigmented eye looks for the holidays.

Next, the brand is releasing the Sugar Glow Kit. It's obvious that the brand wants to stay on trend, as this palette is perfect for anyone who wants to rock the iridescent highlight trend that has been taken from festival culture right into the mainstream for fall. This palette really reminds me of the Sweets Glow Kit, that was released last summer - while both kits have the same purple packaging and color scheme, the colors are lighter in the Sugar Glow Kit. Both kits include the shades Marshmallow, a pure white shade, and Butterscotch, a classic gold, and now we get Starburst and Gumdrop, two peachy-pink shades.

Finally, and arguably what I’m most excited for out of this collection, is the set of mini liquid lipsticks, in the brand’s best selling formula. The Liquid Lipstick 3-PC Set comes with the shades Dazed, a redwood, and new colors Bittersweet, a Swiss chocolate and Hudson, a deep peach. This collection will be a great way to try out new colors, or simply stock up on a few holiday shades that will be perfect to throw in your clutch on the way to a Christmas party.

Which of these will you be treating yourself to this holiday season?

Happy Fall! A Pumpkin Spice Air Freshener Got This Baltimore HS Evacuated

A Baltimore high school was evacuated Thursday afternoon because of an odd smell, according to USA Today, that ultimately just turned out to be an air freshener carrying the favorite seasonal scent — Pumpkin Spice.

As Cristo Rey Jesuit High School said in a statement on their website, students on the third floor of the building started noticing a funky smell that they weren't familiar with — and they reportedly told officials that it was getting stronger.

Around 2:30 p.m., the high school’s official statement said "Emergency personnel, including the HAZMAT team of the Baltimore City Fire Department, quickly arrived to assess the safety of our students and the building. Emergency medical technicians evaluated several staff members and students, some of whom were treated on the scene."

Local EMTs were in charge of evacuating staff and students, and even took five to the hospital as a precaution. It didn't take much longer for the team to diagnose the problem — realizing the offending smell wasn't coming from anything immediately threatening but instead from a pumpkin spice air freshener.

Obviously, the high school plans to resume classes on Friday.

While it may seem a little silly now, it’s always better to be safe than sorry (and to call 911 if something feels, looks or smells wrong.) Even if that something turns out to be a wayward air freshener

Prepare Yourself Because Barbie Ferreira & Adidas Are Launching a Body Positive Campaign Together

Nothing is hotter than Adidas Originals and Barbie Ferreira right now. Ferreira's been promoting body positivity while modeling for big brands like Aerie, and a world without Stan Smiths is pretty much impossible to imagine.

Prepare yourself, because the two of them are launching a campaign together. In an exclusive interview with Teen Vogue, Barbie discussed everything from her successful modeling career to what makes Adidas Originals so special and popular.

“What I really want to do is make young women feel like they don’t have to change themselves to do what they want to do. Chubby, fat girls can do whatever the hell they want. Fatties run the world.” The message in the short clip is here - Ferreira’s top priority is to ensure that everyone is loved at every size - and Adidas is backing her up.

Language, specifically that surrounding body-image, is something that is brought up a lot. When asked what she thinks about some models preferring to be called “curvy” instead of “plus sized, Ferreira responded, “I'm a model and I happen to model for curvy things, but at the end of the day, I'm still in front of a camera just like anyone else. Why does there have to be an asterisk? I always thought it was silly to put people into boxes. It narrows down a lot of opportunities.” From the video, it seems like the model is comfortable reclaiming words such as “fatty” that have traditionally been insulting. Clearly, she doesn't give AF what anyone thinks.

It's so important to have models of all sizes, but specifically, those who are actively speaking out about inclusivity in the industry, and in large-scale campaigns such as this one. Working with not only a popular brand, but with one of their most popular collections, ensures that Ferreira’s face, body, and message, will be seen by a ton of people.

Ferreira knows she’s making a difference. She says, “Knowing that girls are inspired to not have the burden of self-hate, even if it's a tiny way, makes me happy to no end. It gets me up in the morning and softens a lot of the blows I get. We're in it together.” In the video, Adidas introduced Ferreira as a body positivity activist and a model, ensuring that its known that her message and activism is just as important to them. Not only is Ferreira dedicated to spreading her message, but she’s passionate about her career and fashion. When asked about her upcoming campaign, the model was nothing short of excited. “Modeling for Adidas is a dream I never knew I could achieve. I've had it in my mind to work with such a dope brand and it's so amazing that I get to be a part of a campaign with so many powerful voices.”

4 Times You Shouldn't Apologize at Work

0
0

There are a number of times when we find ourselves apologizing for no good reason, especially at work. It can be hard to differentiate when it’s appropriate to say “sorry” and when it’s not. Most of the time, we apologize as a way of being polite, like saying sorry instead of saying, “Pardon me for interrupting.” But being polite doesn’t mean we have to apologize all the time. So we’ve made this handy little guide with four work situations you should never feel the need to apologize for.

You should never apologize for…

1. Asking for what you want

Whether you’re asking for a raise or a promotion or any number of things, don’t apologize. Why should you? You’re taking the initiative to ask for what you want. So just ask. Chloe Castleberry, a senior at University of Missouri-Columbia, says “Sometimes women may not feel as comfortable as they should asking for a promotion or raise. In this type of situation, women should never apologize or feel like they are doing something wrong if they want to know what they have to do to get ahead in the workplace!” According to Business Keynote Speaker and Executive Career Strategist Cecilia Rose, saying sorry downplays our self-worth and makes us seem weaker than we really are. So be confident! You should never feel bad for asking for what you want and chasing after your dreams.

2. Choices you’ve made

In general, you should be confident about the decisions you make at work, even if they aren’t perfect. Reilly Tuccinard, a junior at the University of South Carolina, says, “Be strong in your decisions. If you make a suggestion that might not be the best fit, don’t apologize for it; just work to make it more applicable…you will be much more respected if you are confident in your decisions.” By apologizing for decisions you’ve made, you don’t come from a place of strength, Rose says. Maybe the decisions you’ve made or ideas you have are different from your co-workers, but don’t apologize for that. Instead of apologizing, Rose says not to say, “Sorry, I have a better idea,” but rather, “I have a different idea.” “It’s now about difference, not apologizing,” she says. You’re voicing your opinion for a reason, so be confident in it.

3. Someone else’s mistake

“There’s no need to say I’m sorry (for someone else’s mistake),” Rose says. Why should you? It’s not your fault, nor your mistake when someone else drops the ball. “It not only makes you look weak, but you’re taking on a responsibility that’s not yours,” Rose says. Just as you wouldn’t have your coworkers apologize for you, don’t apologize for them, for whatever reason. Let them handle their own business.

4. Asking for help

Sometimes when we ask for help, we feel like we’re inconveniencing another person. Maybe we are, maybe we aren’t, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. Because when you need help, you should ask for it unapologetically. But make sure you have a relationship with that person first. Rose suggests the best way to ask for help is to “build weight” with others in the office. To do this, Rose says, start by offering to help coworkers around the office for a while. Then, when you have enough of a relationship with another person, ask if he or she can help you. When you’re asking for help, Rose says to be thoughtful of their time, and put a short list of three to five questions together to give them. This way they can look it over and be able to help you better since you didn’t blindside them with too many questions. Rose stresses the importance of balancing give and take. “We always want an exchange of energy,” she says. So if you need help, just ask for it from someone you have a relationship with. If you never ask, you’ll never be able to grow and become a better employee. Rose says by not apologizing for needing help, you come from a place of strength, not weakness.

The key to apologizing at work is to do it sparingly. “You’re not gonna stop apologizing overnight,” Rose says. “It’s a process, not an event.” According to Rose, by becoming more self-aware, we can catch ourselves before we say something that doesn’t make us seem strong, like unnecessarily saying sorry. When you apologize for things such as asking for a raise or decisions you’ve made, the apology becomes meaningless and makes you seem unsure of yourself. Own the work you’re doing and what you’re asking for, and only say “sorry” when it’s truly necessary.

MILLY Co-Founder, Michelle Smith, Is Empowering Young Women Everywhere–Here’s How She Does It

Female-led brands are thriving more than ever, and this one is perfect for the sensational college woman. MILLY, created by fashion designer Michelle Smith, is weaving a powerful message into her collection by collaborating with Girls Inc.

Her Campus co-founder, Stephanie Kaplan Lewis, spoke with Smith during a Facebook Live at MILLY's SOHO store, where Smith shared her years of wisdom about the fashion. After studying fashion in Pennsylvania, New York and eventually Paris, her passion led her to start MILLY and establish it all over the world. But, it didn't happen right away. "I believe in paying your dues and working for other people first," Smith explained. "There's so much to learn when you want to be a designer, it's not just about sketching beautiful clothes." Although, she does get to do that from time to time. "My earliest memories, I was about four years old sitting on the kitchen floor sketching, drawing ball gowns," she said.

While in school, Smith interned with Hermés, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior Haute Couture, so she's familiar with the hustle it takes to be a career-oriented intern like many other collegiettes today. "There are so many facets to the business that I think working for other companies is a great way to launch, and you know how to build that confidence and knowledge."

While passionate fashionistas may want to get started on their own work right away, Smith wanted to make sure she knew her style and had something unique to contribute before launching a business. Then, she had her "aha" moment. "I said 'oh my god,' I have this unique style, I know I can create a collection that doesn't exist out there right now." And that's exactly what she did.

MILLY is now expanding their message by partnering with Girls Inc. of New York. The "Girl Boss" and "GRL PWR" shirts will benefit the organization by helping to build lasting mentoring relationships with young girls and encouraging them become the powerful women they were meant to be. In addition to proceeds going to Girls Inc., Smith herself will be a mentor at the organization. The brand and lifestyle of MILLY are truly inspiring because of Smith's hard work, and we can't wait to see how they empower women everywhere.

FEMA Removed Puerto Rico Stats On The DL

0

Since Wednesday, FEMA announced that half of Puerto Ricans had access to clean drinking water and only five percent have electricity. Oddly enough, those stats were erased off of FEMA'S website come Thursday morning, according to The Washington Post

Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló still has updates about these stats on his own site, www.status.pr. New information now says under 10 percent of people have electricity and 54.2 percent of people have access to drinking water.

William Booher, a FEMA spokesman said, per the Post: "Our mission is to support the governor and his response priorities through the unified command structure to help Puerto Ricans recover and return to routines. Information on the stats you are specifically looking for are readily available,"

According to the site, nearly 14,000 federal workers are on the ground in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Trump has repeatedly pat himself on the back and has been constantly tweeting about how great of a job he's doing. He noted the death toll to be much smaller than that of Katrina back in 2005, to much criticism.

Puerto Rico, which already had weak power grids and infrastructure before the hurricane, was given generators for hospitals, government buildings, shelters and other important locations. There's still no exact reason available for why FEMA would take down the statistics, but at least we can still keep up with Puerto Rico's progress.

The Way Ryan Gosling Talks About His Late Dog George Will Make You Laugh & Cry

If you watched Saturday Night Live with host Ryan Gosling last weekend (and who didn’t?), you may have noticed that he was rocking a special necklace during his monologue. The necklace made appearances as he continued to attend press events throughout the week to promote his new film, Blade Runner 2049. During a sit-down on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ryan revealed the meaning behind the jewelry. (Fair warning: This may make you tear up.) It's actually the tag that once belonged to his dog, George.

For those who don’t know, George made his television debut back in 2011 on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. His rocker hair, adorable face and, of course, his handsome owner made George the total package. Unfortunately, George passed away last December, no doubt leaving a hole in Ryan’s heart.

Ryan now wears George’s tag as a necklace in memory of his beloved friend. Gosling shared with Ellen that George was his constant companion, keeping him company on almost every film set. Ryan said, “It’s funny to say ‘dog’ because I feel like, there was something about George where I think he felt like being a dog was beneath him.”

The proud dog dad also described how his buddy turned into an "aging rock star" as he got older. "George, as he started to age, started looking like an aging rock star. He was sort of skinny-fat and he had big hair, you know, no teeth, open sores, but still sexy."

We've all had animals touch our lives in special ways, and we certainly feel their absence when they’re gone. It’s nice to see someone as visible as Ryan openly discussing the impact animals have on us.

With that, I need to find a dog to cuddle and cry with!

Gal Gadot's Daughter Couldn't Care Less That Her Mom Is Wonder Woman

If the universe was able to agree on something this summer, it's that Wonder Woman is a fantastic film. And Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman herself, is an incredible person off screen, too. So what’s this about her daughter not being impressed?

Gal is currently in New York City preparing to host this weekend’s Saturday Night Live. She took time out of her busy schedule to stop by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss many important topics, and, of course, play some games.

A post shared by Gal Gadot (@gal_gadot) on

While we gleaned a few important things during her interview (for starters, Gal had never had a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup before), the most interesting thing I learned was that her daughter Alma couldn’t be less impressed that her mother is Wonder Woman!

Gadot said Alma is taking her success in stride. “She’s like, 'Listen, we’ve been to London. It’s been amazing. I was working on set too, but I was four—three, four—so I didn’t do all the takes. It was cold, and they dressed me like a poor girl so I didn’t want to do it [a cameo] because I don’t want to be famous.”

Six-year-old Alma has an interesting perspective on what makes a woman, well, a wonder. According to Gadot, her daughter also said, “But honestly, every woman is a Wonder Woman. My mom is just the biggest one because she does the movie.”

Hearing a young girl acknowledge that every woman is special in her own way is truly heartwarming. It’s nice to know that Gal is fostering this sense of pride in her little girl. Way to go, Alma, and way to go, Gal!

The Trump Administration Might Be Coming For Your Birth Control Next

0
0

The Trump administration is at it again. That target this time? Birth control. The New York Times reports that the trump administration has plans to put new rules in place that would void the federal requirement for employer's to cover birth control in the health insurance plans they provide for employees. No big deal, right? Wrong.

A study by the Obama administration determined that more than 55 million women get free birth control under this federal mandate, the NYT says.

What about the legality of all of this? Since Trump and co. failed to replace Obamacare, people thought birth control was pretty much safe, but the Trump admin argues that Obamacare does not "explicitly require coverage of contraceptives," which it doesn't in the text of the bill actually signed into law. In 2013, through the Federal Register, the Obama admin implemented the rule requiring employers to provide birth control, saying it was essential for protecting women's health.

This is kind of confusing, but basically the 2012 Affordable Care Act had a section (specifically "Sec. 3509. Improving Women's Health") which created committees for, you guessed it, improving women's health. Leaving it up to the committees to determine how this would be accomplished, they thought free birth control was a good idea. The tricky part is now Trump can go through the same process to finalize his new rules.

The NYT reports that one of the rules offers an exemption to employers and insurers that have issues providing free birth control “based on its sincerely held religious beliefs," which basically expands an exemption that already existed within Obama's mandate and the Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. decision by the supreme court.

However there's another rule that offers exemption for companies with “moral convictions” against covering birth control. This huge because that leaves room for companies that don't have any religious affiliation to get out of covering contraception.

Just like with Obama's rules, Trump's policies will probably lead to a host of new court cases, this time from more liberal groups and people. Which means even after the Trump admin puts the rules in place, the issue will be far from over. Yippee.

If The Aliens Come Next Year, Remember That This Guy Warned Us

0

After a night out drunk you might say and do some pretty bizarre stuff, but it's be hard to top this guy who drunkenly claimed that aliens will be coming for us —or at least for Casper, Wyoming—next year.

KTWO-AM reports that police in Casper responded to an intoxicated gentleman named Bryant Johnson who claimed he came from the future, specifically the year 2048, to warn people of an impending alien invasion. He told the police that residences needed to evacuate since the aliens would be there in 2018.

Apparently he was supposed to be go back to the year 2018 and not 2017, because that's the only thing that's wrong in this situation. Naturally, he wanted to speak to the president of the town as well.

Mugshot from Casper Police Department

Given he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, according to KTWO, we're guessing he didn't really come from the future, but was just incredibly wasted.

KTWO also reported that a breathalyzer showed a BAC of .136 — but he blamed the aliens for that. Apparently they filled his body with alcohol so that he could time travel using a "giant pad" too.

Obviously. Next time you go out, you should see if you can time travel! But also maybe not, because Johnson ended up being arrested for public intoxication.

5 Ways to Get Closer to Your Sorority Sisters

0
0

Rushing a sorority is thrilling. You run home to over a hundred new sisters that will become your best friends for the rest of your college life and beyond. However, it can be extremely overwhelming, and it’s hard to get to know every single one of your sisters. Besides the typical grab-a-dates and socials, there are plenty of other ways to bond with your sorority sisters on a daily basis. The more you put into sorority life, the more you get out of it. It is possible to get to know everyone and make those connections that will last a lifetime.

1. Do recruitment

Recruiting new students as sisters includes two weeks of long nights and endless step-clapping. Many people try to get out of doing recruitment, and I will admit, it’s not for everyone. However, recruitment week works wonders in regard to bonding with your sisters. You will eat, sleep, and breath your sorority all week, but at the end of the day, you have your sisters by your side after all the singing, conversing, and stress. Recruiting may even bring you closer to sisters you had never met before or never thought you would become friends with. Trust me, it’s worth it.

2. Go to sisterhood studies

Most sororities have sisterhood studies, or study sessions at the house, where you can go and hang out with your sisters while preparing for an exam or working on assignments. Stephanie Huynh, a sophomore at Lehigh University, mentioned, "We're all trying to succeed in school while maintaining our other commitments, and studying with each other allows you to spend more time with each other while being productive." You can meet other sisters in your field of study that can help you through classes. Sometimes, you’ll be lucky enough to find a sister that has already taken a course you’re in and can help you prepare. Don’t be afraid to ask older sisters about recommended courses and professors.

3. Stay active in group chats

Whether it’s a Facebook page, GroupMe, or WhatsApp group, staying up to date with conversations will ensure that you don’t miss out on an event or opportunity to hang out with your sisters. Ashley Diggins, a sophomore at the Ohio State University, says, “Don't be afraid to talk in your sorority GroupMe/group chat/whatever your sorority has for that even if it's just little things. I one time asked for advice on a cover letter of mine and one girl I had never really talked to messaged me about it, and we got to talking about other things and are now good friends. And if your sorority doesn't have a group chat set one up ASAP.” It’s little things such as making a post in a group chat that can bring you closer with sisters you weren’t close with before.

4. Go on fates

Fates are friend dates, and to be honest, they are the best kind of dates. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone in your sorority and ask them to grab dinner or see a movie, even if you’ve never talked to them before. Think about how happy you would be if someone reached out to you—it’s not weird, it’s flattering. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up meeting your best friend that way.

5. Exercise together

Most campuses have complimentary gym access, so heading to the gym with your sisters is a fun and easy way to not only bond, but also stay in shape. Rhiana Raymundo, a junior at the University of Central Florida, recommends taking group exercising classes together for fun. Yoga, Pilates, and Zumba are great classes to try out with your sisters.

There are plenty of unexpected ways to get the most out of your sisterhood. Don’t be shy, these girls are here to help and guide you through college, and you should do the same for them. Get to know as many sisters as you can, even if it’s uncomfortable at first. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

  2. Wrap one strip at a time snugly around the hot dog. Depending on the size of the hot dog, you may not need all of both strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog exposed for the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog.
  3. Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350º F for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown.
  4. Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes. Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.

  • 40 slivered almonds

  2. Insert 2 sliced almonds about 1 inch from pointed end of strawberry to make the ears on the rat. Repeat with remaining strawberries.
  3. Insert a fork into the wide end of a strawberry. Holding the strawberry on fork, spoon the melted chocolate over the fruit to coat, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off.

  5. Repeat with remaining strawberries, chocolate, almonds and licorice. Chill until firm.

What recipes will you be making this Halloween, collegiettes?

A Women's Advocacy Group Played Trump's 'Grab Them by the Pussy' Tape on Loop for 12 Hours on the National Mall

Today marks a year since then-candidate President Trump's comments about grabbing women "by the pussy" were released in an Access Hollywood tape — and even though he may be president now, one women's advocacy group isn't letting anyone forget the horribly sexist things POTUS once said.

Refinery29 reports that UltraViolet, a women's advocacy group, marked the anniversary of the release of the tape by playing it on loop on Friday near the White House — for 12 hours straight. The giant screen, which played the footage from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, was placed on Constitution Avenue between the National Mall and the White House.

"That man may now sit in the Oval Office, but we will not let him — or anyone else — forget the tape or those comments," Shaunna Thomas, one of UltraViolet's co-founders, told Refinery29. "The Donald Trump on that tape is the same Donald Trump that sits in the Oval Office every day aggressively pursuing an anti-woman agenda, including the active dismantling of legal protections for survivors of sexual assault. That is why we are showing the video on loop in D.C., and that is why it is all the more important that we stand up and 'grab back.'"

According to the Washington Post, UltraViolet also held a protest outside the White House on Friday where sexual assault victims spoke out against the Trump administration's agenda — which so far, has included nixing Obama-era campus sexual assault legislation and attempting to repeal Obamacare.

The tape, which was first released by the Washington Post last year, was from 2005 and featured the now-POTUS bragging to Billy Bush about kissing and groping women. "I’m automatically attracted to beautiful women — I just start kissing them," he says in the tape. "It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."

When the tape was initially released last year, many thought it had ruined Trump's chances in the White House — and even though that wasn't the case, it's important to remember that it doesn't make the president's comments toward women excusable.

5 Key Decisions You’ll Make in High School

0
0

High school may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but there are some key decisions you’ll have to make along the way. Who you spend time with, what teachers you stay in touch with and how you go about applying to colleges are all choices you’ll be faced with during your high school years.

We’ve talked to collegiettes who have been there to let you in on five important decisions you’ll make throughout high school. When you’re prepared, making them will be a breeze!

1. Will you stay true to yourself?

Although this may sound cheesy, staying true to yourself is significant when you’re surrounded by people trying to fit in. High school is the perfect time to explore your interests and figure out what you like, not follow what everyone else is doing.

Micki Wagner, a junior at the University of Missouri-Columbia, says, “I was a theatre kid, which is not necessarily super cool but who cares because I love it. I walked away from my religion at a Catholic high school when I realized it didn't fit me, I created an a capella club at my school with one of my good friends.” When Micki chose to follow her path, she made friends she’s still close with and learned a lot about herself. Staying true to you will prepare you for college life.

2. Who will you hang out with?

Who you spend time with on a day-to-day basis during high school will have a big impact on how you feel and what you spend your time doing. Christine Burney, a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design, says to find “good friends that challenge you.” When your friends support you and push your limits, you’ll grow together—and that’s what high school is all about. If you choose to hang out with people who aren’t there for you or are into things you aren’t, you’re not going to enjoy your high school years as much. If you get in with the “wrong crowd,” there’s potential for you to not be able to live to your fullest.

3. What teachers will you stay in touch with?

It may be tempting to drop your books and run after graduation. However, staying in touch with your teachers who can offer you mentorship in the future can help you in the long run.

Ashley Ortiz, a sophomore at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, did just that! “I stayed in touch with the teachers that basically taught me all the skills (essay writing, public speaking, quick reading, etc.) that I needed for my basic college classes!” she says. When you keep your teachers in the loop about what you’re doing in college, you’ll be in the back of their mind—and you never know when that may come in handy!

If you have a connection with a teacher who was also your coach or wrote you a letter of recommendation, send them an email every once in a while. It only takes a few minutes and it will help later on when you need an internship recommendation or are looking for your first job.

4. What will your passion be?

This may seem like a big decision —but don’t worry, your passion can change over time! High school is the perfect time to try different things to find out what you like.

Christine tried a few different activities during high school to see what was for her. “Try things, like sports, music, languages, try more things; then, in college narrow it down to what you are passionate about,” she says. This is great advice! There's no better way to find out what you want to stick with. Experiment while you can and you’ll find out what you really love.

5. How will you deal with possible college rejection?

There’s no denying it —getting rejected by the college of your dreams is the worst feeling. But, how you deal with possible rejection is up to you.

Ashley turned her rejection into a positive experience. “I got rejected by one university and I felt bad, but at the same time I focused on the ones I did get accepted to and chose the best one for my professional and academic growth,” she says. If you take things to heart, you’re not going to feel any better.

Realizing that you’ll find the right college for you and moving forward will be the best choice you can make. Keep slaying!

Although you shouldn’t stress about every little thing during high school (enjoy it while you can!), there are some key decisions that will come along the way. Staying true to yourself, trying your best and finding out what you’re interested in will all help prepare you for the future. You’ve got this pre-collegiettes —college doesn’t know what’s coming!

Welp, the Creator of 'Friends' Says a Revival Is Never, Ever Happening

Sorry to break it to you, Friends fans — but no matter how much we beg and plead for a revival of Phoebe, Rachel, Joey, Ross, Monica and Chandler (and despite the reboots of other *classics* like Gilmore Girls and Full House), it's looking like a Friends revival is pretty much never going to happen.

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyFriends co-creators David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik were asked about the possibility of a reboot of the show, and the answer is definitely not what we were hoping for. As EW puts it, the question was met with "a swift no."

"We did it, and it’s done, and we did it right," Crane told EW. "You can’t go back," Klarik added. "You sit there and you go, 'Oh my god what happened to him? How did they get so old? And they’re not so funny anymore.'"

Cue the sound of our hearts breaking. While we can understand where they're coming from, we still wish we could be #blessed enough to get one more rendition of "Smelly Cat" from Phoebe, or hear Ross try to tell Rachel, "We were on a BREAK!" just one more time. *Sigh* Welp, guess we'll just go back to streaming all 236 episodes on Netflix over and over again.

We know how hard it is to make important life decisions, but we also know how much we tend to freak out about the tiny ones too. For the girl inside all of us who LOVES to sweat the small stuff, we've compiled a list of things we can all relate to when making daily decisions. So here you go: 15 things only girls who can't make up their damn mind understand.

1. People are always pressuring you to make a decision

2. Which is something you HATE because your worst fear is choosing wrong

3. You recognize that some decisions are life-changing and need to be thought out

4. But sometimes even the most mundane of choices makes you think a little too hard

5. Which means everyone is always telling you to lighten up

6. Oftentimes your mental process looks a lot like this:

7. Picking a restaurant makes you want to crawl into bed and never leave

8. And don’t even get us started on choosing what to order when you get there

9. People often accuse you of being flaky

10. But you know you're just evaluating all your options

11. Choosing a school was one of the hardest things you’ve ever had to do

12. And that was before you had to choose a roomie and a color scheme for your dorm room

13. And it was such a relief when all your Facebook stalking and small talk led you to the best roomie ever

14. You take pride in your careful decision-making

15. But you know you may have to work a little more on going with the flow

The 13 Stages of Picking Out the Perfect Halloween Costume

0
0

October 31 is rapidly approaching. Before we know it, thousands of girls will be using eyeliner to draw cat whiskers across their faces and college students everywhere will be hitting the town for a night of freaky and flirty festivities. That crucial moment has arrived—the moment when you must decide what you’re going to be for Halloween! And this year, it has to be ~perfect~.

Like any major decision, picking out your Halloween costume comes with lots of different emotions. Those of us who have been through this before know the process goes a little something like this.

1. Closet Browsing

You could easily turn that polka-dot dress into a Minnie Mouse costume, but that was so last year. And while your red dress totally slays, the devil look is overdone! Ugh, time to go shopping.

2. Planning

Before you hit the nearest costume shop, some serious brainstorming must be done. You don't want to freeze on your way to parties, but you want to look amazing in case you happen to meet your soulmate or something. But you also need a costume that won't be too uncomfortable, so you can show off your dance moves when the time comes. You weigh your options, and now you totally have a game plan. Sexy (but tasteful!) pumpkin, here you come!

3. The Thrill of the Chase

It's finally time to go shopping! You've gathered up a group of your besties whose opinions you trust dearly, and you enter the store with your goal in mind. But everything goes awry when the abundance of options before you suddenly puts your inner desire to shop 'til you freaking drop into overdrive. Say goodbye to sexy-but-tasteful pumpkin, and say hello to EVERY OPTION EVER. Let the costume parade begin.

4. Dressing Room Overload

You and your friends have rounded up a solid amount of costume options, and your wrists are starting to lose circulation from the hangers digging into your skin. It's time to head to the dressing room. After you shamefully admit to the saleswoman the number of costumes on your arm, you finally get to try them on. This may take a while.

5. Impromptu Fashion Show

Did you really go shopping with your friends if you didn't parade around outside the dressing rooms in the many fabulous outfits you picked out? It just wouldn't be the same! Cue the music because here comes your inner Regina.

6. Trying On the "My Parents Would Disown Me" Costume

As you begin to slip into the various costumes you pulled from the racks, you realize that some work better than others... particularly the ones that don't reveal 90 percent of your skin. These tend to be the "slutty (insert occupation here)" costumes. Who can even wear this without multiple body parts slipping out? You'd like to leave at least something to the imagination! If you have to question whether you're able to wear undergarments with your costume, it's probably safe to pass.

7. Trying On the "I Look Like a Nun, But at Least I'll Be Warm" Costume

On the other end of the costume spectrum are the ones that leave just about everything to the imagination. I'm talking about you, Miss Downton Abbey costume.

8.  Trying On Multiple "Meh" Costumes

The rest of the costumes you try on tend to be somewhere in between. There's the classic witch ensemble, the zombie cheerleader and the overdone witch, angel and hippie costumes. Before you know it, they all start to blend together, and you're ready to be rid of the entire costume-shopping experience. The oh-so-unoriginal cat costume even crosses your tired mind as a good idea at this point.

9. Finding the Perfect Costume!*

You've stepped into and out of so many costumes at this point that trying on just one more is almost painful. But as you pull (likely shimmery and nearly see-through) fabric over your head for one last time, you've finally found it: The perfect costume! You look amazing, you won't freeze, and it's totally original.

10. *Price Tag Regret

There's just one problem. What college student can afford to spend 70 dollars on one little Halloween costume? Do you know how many burritos I could afford with that kind of money? Back to the rack it goes...

11. Process of Elimination

Now that you found out your perfect costume is unattainably expensive, it's time to go back to brainstorming. This calls for a reconsideration of your dressing room contents and some serious down-to-business shopping questions from your girlfriends.

12. Success at Last

After reevaluation with your friends, you finally decide on an affordable costume that is the perfect comination of sexy and cute. You're already coming up with clever Instagram captions in your head for the all the adorable pictures to be taken in your fabulous Halloween future.

13. Party Time!

You did it! You made it through yet another year of stressfully picking out the perfect Halloween costume. Wait, what did you say? There's a whole Halloweekend? You need more than one costume?! Oh well, there's always Karen's go-to.

Happy costume hunting!
