What To Do To Feel Less Bloated

Being bloated, unfortunately, is not fun. You often feel heavy, lazy and reluctant to wear tight-fitting clothes when your belly is distended. Thankfully, bloating can be reduced with careful diet changes. We’ve collaborated with an expert on nutrition to give you tips to cure that bloat that keeps following you around. Read on to find out andkeep yourself healthy and happy.

1. Identify the irritant and reduce your intake

The first thing you should do is find out what’s making you feel bloated. If you’re feeling the bloat in your upper stomach, it’s most likely something you ate. Susan L. Holmberg, a certified nutrition specialist, says that it’s not always obvious. “It might not be what you ate now – it could be what you ate two days ago,” she says. “Honestly, people don’t remember what they eat. Keeping a food diary is a great idea to keep track of possible irritants. The most common causes of bloat include gluten, berry, soy, egg, peanuts, artificial sweeteners and sugar.”

Grains and gluten are often the cause of bloating. If you constantly feel bloated, try reducing your grain intake and see whether it goes away. Most importantly, avoid processed foods with high sugar content

Constipation and PMS can also cause bloating of the lower stomach. Make sure you’re going to the bathroom at least once a day. It’s important to keep your digestive system moving so there’s nothing backed up. While some of the bloating that results from PMS is unavoidable, follow the same tips below to lessen its effects.

2. Drink lots of water

As your mom always said, water is the cure to everything! As soon as you feel bloated, increase your water intake. While it might make you feel more bloated at first, the water will keep your digestive tract moving and your stool soft – which in turn will reduce your bloat in the long-term.

Monica Perez, a sophomore at Florida Atlantic University, reminds you that retaining water will exacerbate your bloat as well. “As for bloating, cut down on your salt intake because you retain more water when you eat salty foods,” she says. Great advice! Skip that bag of potato chips and head for a bottle of water instead.

3. Eat foods with probiotics — and not unwanted sweeteners

Probiotics are popular nowadays for their digestive benefits – and for good reason. Your body contains many kinds of bacteria that must remain in balance to keep your stomach healthy and happy. Unfortunately, stress and the things we eat can disrupt our bacteria, causing bloating and other maladaptive digestive problems. Probiotics restore the good bacteria that’s necessary for your body and can definitely lessen your bloat.

While yogurt is a great source of probiotics, it can often come with unnecessary sugars. Those same sugars can, unfortunately, make you bloat. If you’re feeling a little heavy in the stomach, maybe skip that strawberry yogurt you eat every morning and take an unsweetened variety.

Holmberg also gives an alternative to yogurt. “Eat fermented foods,” she says. “They could be kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi – anything that is naturally fermented.” Kombucha is a great example of a fermented drink as well – and is readily available at your nearby supermarket. She notes that you can take probiotics in supplements, but it’s better to find them naturally. “If you would like to take supplements, it’s best to find a professional brand that needs to be refrigerated and has at least ten to fourteen different types of bacteria,” she says.

Besides eating probiotics themselves, you can also eat foods that help your body create its own probiotics. These foods, which contain prebiotic fibers, include vegetables like jicama, radishes, onions, and carrots.

4. Take a digestive enzyme

If you find a certain food is causing you to bloat whenever you eat it, you might not have the enzyme that breaks down that food in your body. For example, lactose intolerance is quite common — and sometimes, people don’t even know they have it.

“Many people become lactose intolerant over the course of their life,” Holmberg says. “When people are lactose intolerant, they don’t have the lactase enzyme, which dissolves the sugar in milk.” If you’re bloating often because of dairy products, you can start drinking milk with the lactase enzyme added — that way, your body can degrade the sugars in the milk. It’s harmless and inexpensive to see if you’re intolerant to a certain food. Speak with your doctor if you suspect you’re intolerant and they’ll definitely provide you with specific enzymes that can help cure your bloat when you eat that food.

5. Don’t neglect your workout routine when you’re bloated

Working out is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re bloated, but it can help more than you think. “During my worst PMS, I went to the gym anyway,” Holmberg says. “I’ve had some of the most memorably good workouts when I had PMS. Movement at all will help mediate the symptoms of bloat.” Even if you feel like curling up and staying in bed when your stomach is heavy, get out and keep moving. In turn, it will help keep your digestive system moving as well.

Unfortunately, many of these methods take a while to implement. If there’s that party you’ve been looking forward to tonight and you really want to feel better within a day, Holmberg gives you a simple trick. “Drop all the starch and carbs out of your diet and take a walk,” she says. “Natural diuretics like watermelon and asparagus will help as well.” By losing all these heavy foods and getting your body moving, you’ll begin to feel better immediately. Over the long-term, take a look back at the previous steps to eliminate bloat permanently. Good luck, collegiettes!

This is not a drill: singer and songwriter Harry Styles will soon be playing new songs for an entire week on "The Late Late Show with James Corden." According to a video that was posted by James on Tuesday, Harry is going to play one new song on each show during the week of May 15th. It's perfect timing for the performances because Harry's new album will be released May 12.

It doesn't stop there, collegiettes: Harry will also make appearances in other segments on the show that week. Since he is trying to get some more press for his solo career, the performances couldn't have come at a better time. According to an article from Refinery 29, the singer is trying to shy away from his One Direction image so the public can focus on his solo music.

There's no doubt that there's a friendship blooming between the two Brits, which gives me hope that these segements will actually be amazing, and I definitely will be tuning in May 15 to see all of this go down. Check out the video below for a preview of what will probably be the best week ever.

Selena Gomez Just Cut Her Hair Shorter Than Ever & It Looks SO Good

While we've grown to know Selena Gomez for her signature long, shiny dark locks, we're all in need of a dramatic beauty change from time to time - and the singer, actress and producer just made a major one that we're so on board with.

On Tuesday, Selena took to Instagram to show off her new 'do: a chin-length cool-girl cut with edgy layers, which she styled with a deep side part - and it's making me totally rethink being afraid to head to the hairstylist for a bob of my own. Selena has dabbled in the lob (or long bob, for the uninitiated), before rocking long, mermaid-esque hair extensions in more recent months, but this is definitely the shortest she's ever gone. And with over 2 million Instagram likes, her fans clearly approve.

Her 'gram had no caption, and therefore no way to know the stylist responsible for her new look - but that's definitely not stopping us from taking this photo to our own salons ASAP.

The Starbucks Dragon Frappuccino Is Here to Make You Forget All About Unicorns

If you didn't get your hands on an Internet-famous Unicorn Frappuccino this weekend, don't freak - while the drink's limited edition availability is officially over, the Dragon Frappuccino is here to save your Insta feed.

What exactly is this Dragon Frappucino, you ask? While you won't find it on the menu, you can order it by asking for a green tea frapp with vanilla bean powder and berry swirl, according to PopSugar. This recipe leads to a green and purple swirl that's, dare we say it, even prettier than its unicorn counterpart - plus, all of the drink's ingredients are available year-round.

Apparently, baristas started making the creation after running out of several of the ingredients for the Unicorn Frappuccino - and according to much of the Internet, it tastes better too. Your caffeine addiction also doesn't have to suffer, since the Dragon Frapp contains caffeine via the green tea. (I mean, we are college students after all, and it's not like I can get by on pure sugar and unicorn magic alone.)

This College Now Has a Vending Machine for Plan B and Contraceptives

It isn't exactly a secret that a lot of college students are sexually active - and along with that, comes the responsiblity to protect you and your partner from STI's and pregnancy. It sounds simple enough, but contraceptives and condoms can also be difficult to get ahold of. However, one UC Davis student's idea might change that for good.

Refinery29 reports that UC Davis students returned from spring break to find that the school had installed a vending machine that stocks Plan B, condoms, pregnancy tests, feminine products, lube and over-the-counter medications. It's aptly named the Wellness-To-Go machine, and the idea actually came from a UC Davis student.

Senior Parteek Singh apparently got the idea for the machine after his friend had difficulty finding emergency contraception on campus, and he's been working for two years to make it a reality. While the school's campus health center stocks emergency contraception, it is only open until 5 p.m. on weekdays, and the machine allows for anonymity, which might make some students more comfortable.

"I think these are just basic resources that students need on campuses,” Singh told the Sacramento Bee. “Most college students are sexually active … and these resources should be provided to them.”

While the machine is currently only on UC Davis's campus at the moment, Singh has also said that he's spoken to other universities about getting Wellness-To-Go machines of their own - because seriously, how did someone not think of this before?

Ivanka Trump Was on 'Gossip Girl' Once & You Probably Totally Forgot About It

There are plenty of celebrity cameos in Gossip Girl (Karlie Kloss, anyone?!), and considering her father wasn't the President of the United States yet, it's likely that when you watched the show the first time, you totally shurgged off a quick appearance by, get ready: Ivanka Trump. But it happened, and the Internet is totally shook remembering that it did.

Twitter user @mawwgie was binge-watching the show (as one does), and made sure no one forgot Ivanka's and her husband Jared Kushner's cameo ever again.

The couple appears in the season four, episode six, 'Easy J,' as attendees of a New York Observer party. To jog your memory, it's during the scene in which Serena's boyfriend at the time, Colin, is accepting his Bachelor of the Year award - and Jared is stepping down as the previous winner. The camera cuts briefly to Ivanka who looks on approvingly, and we never imagined such a brief moment from Gossip Girl would be so relevant in 2017 TBH.

While it was totally NBD back in 2010, considering the somewhat problematic role she plays in current events now, we're kinda freaking out over the fact that we're just now realizing this. Talk about a #tbt, am I right?

So you thought Pretty Little Liars was going to dial back the crazy after last week’s premiere? Think again. Just look at all the crap the Liars had to deal with in “These Boots Were Made for Stalking.”

Alison-in-training Addison tried to peg Emily as a predator

Step back, little girl. You don’t know the crowd you’re playing with here.

Aria started questioning her relationship with Ezra

A snoopy reporter and an article about Ezra and Nicole’s reunion were enough to launch Aria into a frenzy. Good thing her pal Holden was around to keep her in check.

Spencer hasn’t found Mary Drake

And she’s still dealing with the fallout of learning about her birth parents.

Jenna told the cops Noel was trying to kill her too

Jenna played the victim, but the Liars weren’t buying it.

The Hastings are selling their house

Not the house! Spencer tried to act like she didn’t care, but you could tell she SO did.

Jenna showed up wearing a copycat of one of Hanna’s dress designs

She’s obviously toying with Hanna on A.D.’s behalf, but why?

Hanna was trapped in a cobbler’s cage

Apparently that’s a thing—still waiting for an actual cobbler to confirm. Shout-out to Caleb for saving Hanna! #Haleb forever

Emily used A.D.’s board game to blackmail Addison

And just like that the puzzle is starting to resemble a map. Hmm…

7 Things High School Students Should Know Before Considering A Gap Year

Everyone knows the first year of college is the hardest. You're completely on your own for the first time--not to mention trying to pick the right classes, figuring out what you want to major in, dealing with new room-mates, and meeting new people outside your friend group from high school. It’s different and scary.

But, what if you can delay this hellish time for 365 more days? Gap years are usually taken by incoming college freshmen before starting their first semester. During a year off, students can use their break from school to travel, relax and mature before starting undergrad. Here are some things you need to know before considering a gap year:

1.You’ll be graduating later than the rest of your friends

There is nothing more anxiety inducing than watching your friends from college graduate before you do. Scrolling through pictures on Instagram of everyone in their caps and gowns will make you feel like you're not going fast enough. This feeling can cause you to make rash decisions that lead to taking 24 credits at the same time to catch up.

Alexa Hill, a junior at University of South Carolina, has never personally done a gap year, but knows some friends who have. “I've learned from them that not having a 10-year plan isn't the end of the world,” she says.

Make sure you’re okay with graduating slower than you expected. Don’t worry, at the end of the day the only thing that matters is graduating regardless of how fast you’re going.

2. A gap year can turn into years

If you're not focused enough once those 365 days are over, you might want to continue traveling or binge watching Netflix shows rather than focusing on applying for the next available term. Taking a break can turn into a slippery slope of never wanting to go back to class. Make sure you have a plan, or confirm you're enrolled in the right semester once the year is over.

Taking a long break from something will always demotivate you to continue. Think of it like this –you’re on a diet for two days. You see a donut and decide to have a cheat day just after starting. Eventually, you’ll think more cheat days okay. Now you’re sobbing over a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and regretting all your life decisions.

3.You’ll have more time to choose your major

Some freshmen jump into their dream majors as soon as they start college classes. Sometimes though, you may graduate with a major completely different than you originally planned--or worse, you may regret choosing your major after years of working through it.

Taking the year off before school can solidify or even inspire what you choose to major in. Vanessa Cuadros, a recent graduate from Florida International University, used credits towards her old pre-med major when she realized she wanted to major in communications. Although Vanessa strongly disagrees with taking a year off, she suggests riding the tide and seeing what you like while actively taking classes. By being inspired by friends and professors, Vanessa was able to choose her major without taking the year off.

4. Taking time off may affect your financial aid

Depending on when you applied, scholarships are spread throughout the semester. If you start a year after you planned, that scholarship may be given to someone else. In some cases, if there are some financial changes within your household in that year, your FAFSA can also be affected as well.

Amy Donaldson, an advisor for the school of journalism at Florida International University, explains the difference, “For a scholarship I think it’s a little bit different where you have to accept it by a given time, if not they’re not going to fund it,” Donaldson says.

Donaldson also clarified the differences between scholarships and financial aid. “For financial aid, that’s different because that’s government money that you’re applying for based on your financial status.” she adds. Make sure you sit down with your parents and discuss how taking a gap year may or may not affect your financial aid in the future.

5.The mental health break may work in your favor

The worst is over: The standardized tests and the stress of applying for college. If you really need the mental break to just relax and do absolutely nothing, Treat yo’self. It may be a whole year, but you can use the time to blow off steam.

You deserve a break before you're back in school. Over-heating and bombarding yourself with too much course work will not do you any good in the end, no matter how bad you want to graduate.

6. Applying to a gap year program is the best option

It's really easy to sit home and do nothing all year long, but what if you can join a program that will help you travel with a group of new friends? Gap year programs like Outward Bound help students engage in fun activities while also going through valuable learning experiences.

Although some programs may be expensive, these initiatives are often recommended by deans or college advisors. By doing these programs, you’re avoiding the potential gap years’ curse and falling into a routine of doing nothing with your year off.

7. Volunteer, work and travel while you can

If the gap year program is too expensive, other alternatives that can keep you busy during your year off can be volunteering for what you're passionate about, taking up a part-time job to help your parents pay your way through school and traveling a bit while staying on budget. Taking small road trips with friends can be fun without breaking bank. Try finding fun things to do on weekends a couple of hours away from your hometown.

Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State University, took a gap semester following her freshman year because of a unique experience offered to her as an illustrator for an archaeological excavation. “I think gap years/semester can be incredibly beneficial, because you can use them to supplement your college experience as you can use that time to get professional experience,” she says. Whether it’s working or traveling, you’re sure to grow and mature as a person throughout the year.

Doing something productive on your year off can be beneficial not only for you, but your resume as well.

Taking a gap year has its pros and cons. It’s important to know that you're absolutely positive you're making the right decision in taking a break. Try avoiding unnecessary stress by planning and organizing as much as you can before you start your new semester as a freshman.

9 Things You Definitely Didn’t Know About Your Boobs

$

We all can’t help but love to discuss our boobs—but, how much do you really know about your set? Believe it or not, your breasts are full of surprises that far exceed what you may or may not have learned in your high school health class. Want to know more? We’ve consulted with Catherine McGinty, a Certified Nurse Practitioner at the Rittenhouse Women's Wellness Center in Philadelphia, and learned the nine set-secrets you need to know:

1. Breasts can get fat (and this fat often causes sagginess)

While we all dream of having a perfectly shaped chest, we know this is not really possible for most women. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., breasts are made up of fat cells called adipose tissue, lobes and milk ducts.. As you age, more and more fat cells are produced. Rather than causing you to go up in bra size, these fat cells normally end up setting your chest further down (a.k.a. sagging). Don’t stress, collegiettes––this is a naturally process and there is little that can be done to stop it.

2. Extra nipples are not that uncommon

The presence of an extra nipple, properly known as a supernumerary nipple, is actually fairly common. This bonus nipple is usually just a variation in your body’s natural development, or the result of genetics. "The most common abnormality of breast development [from birth], which can be seen in both boys and girls, is an accessory nipple," Catherine says. "Ectopic nipple tissue may occur at any point along the milk stream from the [armpit] to the groin."

If you think you have a supernumerary nipple, don’t feel strange! About 1 in 50 women have a third nipple, according to HealthResearchFunding.org. In most cases, these nipples are falsely identified as moles (or other skin conditions).

However, Catherine says it is still important to be examined by a medical professional. "They have been associated with an increased risk of genitourinary abnormalities and other developmental abnormalities." These nipples can yield more than cosmetic concerns.

3. It is best to get checked the week after your period

So, when is the best time to get your breasts checked out by a doctor? Three to 5 days after your period. During this time, your boobs will be least tender and swollen, making it easiest for your doctor to detect any abnormalities.

"The best time to perform a breast exam is about one week after your menstrual period ends, when the breasts are least lumpy," Catherine says. Although, she notes that not all expert groups recommend having regular breast exams. "'False positive' findings on breast exams (lumps that are not cancers) may lead to unnecessary breast biopsies and associated anxiety," she says.

While Catherine does not necessarily recommend performing breast self-exams, she does say they are a good a way to identify any changes in your own breasts. However, you should still continue to get regular mammograms.

4. You should always opt for a sturdy sports bra––no matter your cup size

We all know the pain and discomfort associated with a shitty sports bra––unnecessary movement is definitely not our friend during a cardio session! The breast has no muscle (a fact that many women fail to realize), so buying the correct sports bra for your chest is absolutely essential in order to avoid sagging.

Wearing a sports bra reduces up to a massive 74 percent of chest movement, according to Sports Injury Clinic. What are some tips for purchasing the perfect one? One band measurement from underneath the breasts and a cup size that fully covers your chest––without spillage.

5. Your set doesn't necessarily come from your mother

Are you flat-chested, but your mom fills out a C-cup naturally? You may want to look to your dad’s side of the family. While your weight affects the size of your breasts, it is genetics that plays the biggest role in determining how big or small your chest will be. However, Catherine says that there is not a lot of information available on how much breast tissue results from your maternal side versus your paternal side.

6. You are most likely wearing the wrong bra size

Wait, WTF!? It is a vicious cycle of customers purchasing the wrong size, and in turn, retailers resupplying the wrong size. If your bra is uncomfortable in any way, it is probably the wrong size. Your bra should make you feel awesome, not constricted! Take the time to get properly fitted––and we don’t just mean running to your local Victoria’s Secret.

7. Breast size fluctuates throughout your lifetime

Many things attribute to changes in the size of your breasts from your age, to your weight, to your menstrual cycle. While these changes may go unnoticed by some women, for others, the experience is no fun.

For Anna*, a junior at The University of Massachusetts Amherst, the constant change in the weight of her breasts often causes her trouble. “I went from an A to a C in eighth grade, then from a C to a double-D once I went on birth control in tenth grade, ” she says. “They can get pretty heavy and I honestly can’t walk around without a bra and not have back pains.”

Anna adds, “Also, kind of weird, but when I eat [junk food] some weeks, all of the weight goes into my boobs, which is totally a pain for wearing the right bra size.” Fluctuating breast size is something that many collegiettes, especially ones who have a larger chest, have to deal with.

8. Nipple-gasms are a real thing

We know it sounds crazy, but it’s true! According to Dr. Justin Lehmiller and a brain research study published by the Journal of Sexual Medicine, nipple stimulation and genital stimulation are processed the same way inside a woman’s brain. Some women can get so turned on that they actually reach orgasm from nipple stimulation alone!

"Women vary in the intensity, type, and duration of stimulation required for orgasm," Catherine says. "Stimulation of other erotically stimulated areas (breast or nipple stimulation) may trigger orgasm." While it is understandable that this will not hold true for every collegiette, it is surprisingly more common than we all thought.

9. Your left is most likely larger than your right

Like most things in life, no two boobs are the same––even when they are a part of the same chest. Whether it is noticeable to you or not, your left breast is most likely bigger than your right.

"Asymmetry may be more pronounced when the breast is developing, but often improves by full maturity," Catherine says. "Despite this, 25 percent of adult women have some degree of breast asymmetry." Previous trauma, injury or infection can also lead to size differences between your breasts.

Just when you thought you had heard it all when it came to your boobs, you’ve been stumped! Maybe it is time to appreciate your breast friends for just how extraordinary they are. Honestly, they are one-of-a-kind!

See-through is definitely in right now, especially when it comes to bags and—unfortunately—shoes. They're cute and all but if you try wearing see-through heels, chances are your feet will sweat and it will get mad uncomfortable (not to mention gross). Always one to jump on the trend train, Topshop created some ~unusual~ pants made entirely of see-through plastic. The brand admitted that the pants aren't ideal for everyday wear. Oh, really? I wonder why. According to Cosmopolitan, Topshop claims that the pants would be perfect "as a statement piece for a festival or costume party." The brand continued by recommending to "take the look to the extreme with a bikini and sequin jacket or dress [them] down, layered under an oversized jumper or asymmetric hem dress." Hey Topshop, do you know how hot it is in a crowd? I would probably take these pants off in the middle of the festival.

In case you're debating whether or not to buy these pants, you will be happy to hear that they are in fact machine-washable, which is unexpected. Also, the "jeans" come in Topshop's MOTO cut, meaning that they're the perfect straight leg, cropped just above the ankle. #fashion

15 Rules of Email Etiquette to Know Before You Hit Send

$
0
0

A good email mantra to abide by is: never send something in an email that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of the paper. It’s short, sweet and pretty self-explanatory.

Still, there’s a lot to consider before hitting send on a work email, like the internal anxiety attack and threatening nausea that the mere thought commands, for example. To help with that, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you perfect your email etiquette.

1. Choose your email address wisely

Fact: true embarrassment lies in your first email address. Marketing manager, Kari Beaulieu, confesses, “My email address in high school was bubblychick860@yahoo.com.” Sadly, she says, “I still get emails from college-aged professionals who are using email addresses just like this.” Her advice: “If you’re interacting with a potential employer, use your school email address or create a Gmail account that’s as plain as possible—think just your first and last name. If that’s not available, try changing the order or throwing in your middle name.”

Your email address is more than likely the first thing your recipient reads, especially if this is a first-time interaction. Think of your email address in this situation as your interview suit: there’s no doubt that you’d want to make a memorable and professional first impression at a job interview, so you—of course—dress the part. Make sure your email address does the same. Besides, using the format that Beaulieu suggests gives you the added bonus of ensuring that your recipient knows your name right away—and that’s a major key.

2. Create a concise subject line

Most professionals, if not all, decide whether or not an email is worth their time based on the subject line alone. That’s because most people already spend way too much time checking their email. The Huffington Post reports that the amount of time we spend checking email per week is actually equivalent to the number of hours it would take us to binge-watch the entire first season of Orange is the New Black (really, which would you rather do?).

When it comes to the subject line, keep it brief and keep it relevant (absolutely no one likes click bait!). Use logical key words that pertain directly to the content of your email. If this is an urgent message, indicate that in the subject line but avoid using all caps.

Every email should have a subject line! Amanda Augustine, career advice expert, told Business Insider, “An email with a blank subject line will likely go unread or get lost in a cluttered inbox. Write the subject line before the email so you know it’s taken care of.”

Not only is this important for obvious professional reasons, but it’s also a tremendous help when you (or your recipient) are searching through your inbox for a very specific email. If you included a subject line—and it was relevant—chances are that a quick key word search will generate the email you’re looking for.

3. Address your recipient by name

Be honest, you’ve probably sent an email addressed To Whom It May Concern at some point in your life. Though it might have saved you the trouble of having to call and ask for the appropriate contact (because, let’s face it, we’re all deathly afraid of actual phone conversations), this greeting comes across as lazy and impersonal. Even if you’re cold emailing a company for a job or some other business inquiry, it’s always a good idea to identify a direct and appropriate contact. If you’re having a hard time pinning down a name, try a LinkedIn search for the company to connect you to some of their employees.

Keep it formal, especially if this is your first encounter with the recipient. Refer to the person as Ms., Mr. or Dr. in your initial email—especially when referring to a superior. Ellen Yin, PR director at Ledbetter Inc., recommends letting the other person set the tone of the email. If they sign off with a first name or nickname in their reply, address them by this name in your follow-up emails. For example, if your recipient signs off as Alex, she may find it a little weird if you keep addressing her as Alexandra in your emails.

4. Introduce yourself

Yin adds that it’s important to introduce yourself briefly at the beginning of your email. “Don’t assume they know or remember you. If you’ve met before, remind them of the encounter. For example, after my greeting, I say, ‘It was great meeting you last fall at OSU’s college career fair. I enjoyed speaking with you about Ledbetter’s new interactive workout program and recently had a chance to try the Forever Fit Guide myself.’”

If you’ve never met them before, include an introductory line that clearly states your name and your position before writing anything else. An email relationship is not all that different from an in-person relationship. Be professional, but personable.

5. Be courteous

Avoid excessive or aggressive punctuation, like exclamation points. These can be misinterpreted in an email because the recipient cannot see your facial expressions or body language, and they cannot hear your intended tone of voice. The same goes for typing in all caps.

Jodi Adler, author of How Dare You? Helpful Hints for Staying Sane in an Insane World, adds that in an email, “snark and sarcasm often lose their meaning, so unless you know a coworker well, leave the snark for happy hour.”

6. Be respectful of others’ time

You know all those sayings about time—how it’s fleeting and waits for no one, blah blah blah (time is obviously very obnoxious and a little self-indulgent)? Well, they’re true. So keep emails brief and to the point since most people receive dozens of them daily. A long, unorganized email is likely to be deleted without ever having been read.

Also, be mindful of other commitments your recipient may have when requesting urgent responses. It’s best to give them 48 hours to respond before following up if the situation is urgent; a week if it is not. Lastly, it is your responsibility to express gratitude for your recipient’s time and to respond to them in just as timely a manner.

7. Pay attention to grammar and spelling

Relationship and etiquette expert April Masini says, “The attention you pay to an email translates to the attention you’ll pay to a relationship, whether it’s career-related or personal.”

Make sure you spell check—multiple times if it's an especially important email. Masini’s golden rule is: “If you’re sloppy with your spelling, you’re going to be sloppy elsewhere in life.” She also warns against emojis and text lingo: “Use words. It shows your ability to communicate.”

8. Don’t send emails while you're angry or emotional

“Just. Don’t,” says Janet Kornblum, a media training coach. “We’ve all done it: sent that ranting email. It felt great to get it off your chest. And then you thought about it or it came back to bite you.” Instead, she says, “If you need to write it, do it but don’t fill in the recipient line, lest you send it accidentally—angry emails only beget angrier responses.”

It’s kind of like that episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians when Kourtney’s therapist suggested that she compose her not-so-pleasant emails and text messages to ex-beau, Scott Disick, without actually sending them, as some type of cathartic release. Except, Kim accidentally sent one and ruined everything. Don’t be Kim.

9. Minimize calls to action

One email should have one call to action, that is, one request you are making of the recipient. CEO and Publicist, Erika Taylor Montgomery, says it’s important to make it clear if you need information from the recipient. “Because they can’t see you or read your body language, it’s important to try to reduce misunderstandings. Try ending the email by reiterating the question and a time by which you need a response, like ‘Can you please send me those details by Wednesday at 3 p.m.?’” Specifying a deadline, if applicable, will help your colleague prioritize their time—and is more likely to get you a timely response without the need to follow up regularly.

Unless necessary, avoid asking for too much per email; details may get lost and it can be overwhelming to see five different requests in an email.

10. Know when to use “Reply All”

This is a tricky one.

PR expert, Meredith Frazier, warns, “If there are multiple people looped in on an email, please, please, please make sure you hit ‘reply all’ on all correspondence. If people get cut out of email chains, even if it’s unintentional, it can cause some major headaches. If someone took the time to add people to an email, please hit reply all and keep ’em on there!”

But! Always pay attention to the list of people included in the email before replying all. Sometimes, office managers or other administrative personnel will send out mass emails requesting personal information in return (like your home address or office passwords, for example). This is definitely not the kind of information you want email blasted to every single person in your company.

11. CC with care

Marketing and social media expert, R.E. Beck, shares this memorable tidbit about copying others in an email, and we agree: “Remember the ‘three-way calling attack’ scene in Mean Girls? It applies to office email, too. Say you're having an email discussion with a coworker, and after a few messages you think it makes sense to loop in your boss. Before you add your boss' email to the CC line, give your coworker a chance to veto the idea. She was having a conversation with you—don’t unexpectedly share that conversation with a third party.”

12. To BCC or not to BCC—that is the question

BCC-ing someone on an email allows you to include that person in the recipient list, without other recipients knowing. It is especially helpful when sending mass emails to guest lists or college student bodies—situations in which it’s best to keep everyone’s email addresses confidential.

That being said, BCC is sometimes seen as the office equivalent of shade. As in the case of “Reply All,” use with caution and only when appropriate.

13. Attach the document

No, really. Nothing is worse than sending an email referring to an attachment—that you forgot to attach. Ok, we lied. There is something worse: the follow-up email you’re forced to send, explaining your error.

Luckily, some email servers will alert you if there’s no attachment to an email in which you mentioned, “see attached.” Either way, always double check!

14. Sign off respectfully

There are lots of ways you can close a professional email. Any of the following will work just fine: “Best regards,” “Sincerely,” “Thank you,” or “Looking forward to hearing from you.” Your sign-off should reflect the organizational culture of your office. For example, in a more laid back or casual office, “Best Regards” might sound oddly formal. Simply “Best” or even, “Thanks,” might be sufficient.

Also, once you’ve emailed back and forth a few times (or if the conversation is ongoing), you may not need to sign off formally moving forward. If this is true of your situation, you can close the email by typing your first name or preferred nickname.

15. Make sure your email signature is precise and professional

Career coach and social media expert, Carlota Zimmerman, says, “When I get emails from potential clients telling me they’re having a hard time finding a job, and under their signature are GIFs of '90s movies, three phone numbers, a backup email like catpersonxxx@gmail.com, and for good measure, an Ayn Rand quote, my immediate response is ‘Oh, ya think?’”

Ideally, your email signature should include your full name, job title, company’s name and website, office and cell numbers, and office location. If applicable (and professional), you may also include social media links, but only if the linked profiles are relevant to your job.

Note that your company may already have a standard signature format. If one is not provided during your onboarding process, ask your supervisor or peers for advice. The standard signature is often customizable; you can adjust your contact numbers (which is especially useful if you rely more on your mobile phone than on an office phone), and sometimes even the social media links. It’s advisable to check with your supervisor before making any changes to the standard signature, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Better to be safe than sorry.

The art of the professional email is complicated. There’s a lot to consider—like tone, language and timing—and different industries call for different levels of professionalism. But just like it’s better to be overdressed than undressed, it’s better to err on the side of formality when you’re uncertain about an email. Your recipient will respect that you took the time to compose a concise and considerate message.

Chrissy Teigen & John Legend Acted Out 'The Devil Wears Prada' On Snapchat & I'm Dying It's So Perfect

And your daily dose of Snapchat entertainment is brought to you by comedic legends Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. Last year, Legend admitted to Outtake that he and Teigen "repeat-watch" The Devil Wears Prada. Rather than watching the film for the umpteenth time, the stars decided to recreate it themselves. And lucky for us, they recorded it all on Snapchat for our viewing pleasure.

Teigen did an amazing Miranda Priestly impersonation, flaunting only a white towel and some sassy accessories. We're assuming her hubby did most of the filming, except during his perfect take on Andy and Nate's heated breakup scene. The pair even "cast" extras to play the other roles. Yes, they took it that seriously.

Without further ado, we present to you John and Chrissy's The Devil Wears Prada.

This Doritos Bag Plays the 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Soundtrack (Yes, Really)

We all know the inside of a bag of chips is usually half chips, half air, and that's one of the most annoying things ever. Apparently someone found a solution to the problem: Doritos' latest promotion is part chips, part… cassette tape? The Doritos bag features a built-in cassette player that plays the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack, Refinery29 reports.

Purchasing the bag of Doritos gives buyers access to the film's entire tracklist, which was released by Marvel last week. It sounds insane, but listeners can plug their headphones into the vintage cassette deck within the bag. Not only that, but the high-tech addition allows for charging, so fans can repeat the Parliament, Cheap Trick and Fleetwood Mac songs (just to name a few) as many times as they want. Doritos has basically turned their bag of chips into an iPod. And it's marketing gold.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters May 5, but eager fans can purchase these limited-edition chips from Amazon starting April 28 to hold them over.

A Giant Rabbit Mysteriously Died on a United Flight

Looks like United Airlines’ PR Director will be working double time yet again this week. After dragging a paying customer off one of their planes earlier this month, United Airlines now may have contributed to the death of a perfectly healthy rabbit. Say it ain’t so!

According to The Washington Post, Annette Edwards, who breeds Continental Giant rabbits, was traveling with her 10-month-old rabbit, Simon, on April 19. Edwards was taking Simon from Worcestershire, England to his new family in the U.S. However, she made the necessary precautions to get Simon a veterinary check-up.

Edwards told The Sun, “Simon had a vet’s check-up three hours before the flight and was fit as a fiddle.” Just three hours before the flight the rabbit was healthy and happy, yet somehow he passed away during the plane ride.

According to Fox News, it was predicted that Simon would grow to be the largest rabbit in the world. Once Edwards’ plane landed at O’Hare airport in Chicago, she discovered that Simon had passed away.

Edwards explained to The Sun, “I’ve sent rabbits all around the world and nothing like this has happened before.”

Fox News mentions that United Airlines might also have impending legal actions from Edwards and Simon’s new owner. I don’t blame either party for taking legal action. A healthy animal is extremely unlikely to experience medical complications during a flight, especially when the animal had a vet check-up mere hours before takeoff.

Kevin Johnston, a United Airlines spokesperson, told The New York Times in an email that “the safety and well-being of all the animals that travel with us is of the utmost importance to United Airlines and our PetSafe team.”

Yet, this isn’t an isolated incident of healthy animals inexplicably dying during, or shortly after, a United Airlines flight. The Los Angeles Times reports that in 2016, United had the worst pet record of any airline, with nine pet deaths and 14 injuries during the year (they transported over 100,000 pets).

According to The Sun, United Airlines is currently "reviewing the matter." Hopefully Simon, Edwards and his new owner receive justice for his unexplained death during the flight.

This Undocumented Student Was Just Surprised With a Full College Scholarship

On Tuesday, Yesica Calderon was astonished to learn that she would receive a full scholarship to Regis College. Because who wouldn’t be ecstatic to go to college for free?

Calderon is a child of undocumented immigrants, which makes her a 'DREAMer.' Under the DREAM Act, DREAMers are undocumented minors who are protected from deportation and have been given legal status to attend school in the United States. After all, everyone should have the right to a good education.

According to The Boston Globe, Calderon’s teacher sent her a text message that told her to meet her in the library’s study space dedicated to student athletes. When Calderon entered the study space, WCVB Channel 5 captured the moment when she was surprised by her friends and family, who looked on as she received her scholarship.

The East Boston High School student had wanted to go to college, but her options were limited. Though Calderon has a 4.8 GPA, she isn’t eligible for federal financial aid under the DREAM Act. Her mother is a factory worker and couldn't afford the price of college tuition at Regis College. I mean, the cost of a 4-year degree can often surpass the cost of an average home.

The studious high school athlete, who was the captain of the girls’ soccer team as a junior and senior, was awarded a full $156,000 scholarship at Regis College in Massachusetts.

Without this generous scholarship, Calderon may not have been able to attend college. “There are nights where I would cry, not knowing what I would do with my future,” Calderon told WCVB Channel 5 Boston.

As Calderon cried tears of joy, she gave an empowering speech to students in similar situations. “Don’t give up, you can do it. You have a purpose in life and you should not feel down. Don’t feel less just because you don’t have the same opportunities,” Calderon told WCVB Channel 5 Boston.

Yesica, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Nobody should give up on their dreams, even if those aspirations seem unobtainable at the time.

Amy Schumer & Jennifer Lawrence Are Still Making a Movie Together

No need to panic: Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence are still making a movie together, and it’s going to be worth the wait. Though the two badass ladies have been talking about making a film for quite some time (It's been more like two years, but whatever), we can rest assured the film is on the horizon, thanks to a little update from our girl Amy.

J. Law said in 2015 that the two were almost done with the script, but Amy just gave us a better idea of the film's timeline. “I hope we do it in the next year and a half,” the comedian told HelloGiggles. “It’s the kind of movie that we can film at any time. If we make it, it’s gonna be like the light at the end of the tunnel.” Well I sure hope so because after waiting this long, it better be damn good.

Just to refresh your memory, Amy and Jennifer will play sisters—Schumer is the one with her life in order, dreaming of a job as a flight attendant, and Lawrence is just “a mess." Given the actresses' past work, I definitely thought it would be the other way around, but either way, I know they’re going to crush it. I’ll probably leave the theater with stomach pains from laughing so hard.

Though I’m getting a little impatient, as long as I know the movie is still happening, I’ll be able to hold on a little longer.

Dolce & Gabbana's New Sneakers Literally Have a Body-Shaming Message Written All Over Them

It's no secret that the fashion world can often be a body-shaming environment, and many models have battled with extreme cases of eating disorders because of it. Recently, designers have been trying to combat this weight-focused stigma, and make their runways and collections more inclusive of all body types. Well, except for some.

Dolce & Gabbana recently released a new collection that features a $973 sneaker aimed to hit their millennial demographic. To really set this sneaker apart from the rest, it has little messages doodled across the shoe. One phrase has really sparked outraged on social media because of its implicit negativity towards different body shapes. The message on the shoe reads, "I'm thin and gorgeous."

A post shared by stefanogabbana (@stefanogabbana) on

Even though the design has brought many social media users to comment their disgust with this comment—including one reading, "You don’t have to be thin to be Gorgeous!and thin?! I’m disappointed!”—the designer Stefano Gabbana has not apologized. He even went so far as to reply to a few commenters, calling them "idiots" and "stupid." One particularly disgusting reply from the designer reads "n u think is better to be fat full of hamburger???" There are no words.

Even though these sneakers are a stark contrast to the inclusivity the fashion world has been trying to push towards lately, it's really no surprise to see these actions from Gabbana. In the past, he's directly body-shamed Lady Gaga despite the fact that she has admitted her struggles with an eating disorder. He apologized for that incident, but has yet to admit to the harmful nature of the "thin and gorgeous" message.

Dolce & Gabbana, you can do much better than this!

These New Details About Chris Soules' Car Crash Are Absolutely Devastating

911 audio has surfaced following the arrest of former Bachelor star Chris Soules, who has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash that occurred around 8 p.m. on Monday, People reports. An emotional Soules can be heard in the 911 call, originally released by TMZ, explaining the situation to the dispatcher and checking the victim's pulse before he left the scene.

Soules rear-ended a tractor with his truck, plunging the tractor and the driver, 66-year-old Kenneth Mosher, into a ditch. "He's not conscious," Soules tells the dispatcher.

The call then continues for several minutes, and a very distraught Soules can be heard asking people nearby if they know how to do CPR. He then proceeds to check whether Mosher still has a pulse. The audio ends with Soules asking if he can call the dispatcher back.

Soules allegedly left the scene at around 8:20 p.m. and was later found in his hometown, where he was arrested at 1:16 a.m. on Tuesday, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to People. It is not yet apparent why Soules left the scene.

Even more devastating, it appears that Soules knew the man that was killed in the accident, Us Weekly reports. "Everyone around here is in shock," said Richard Roepke, a relative of Mosher. "He knew them, they're neighbors. We're feeling very sad, everyone knows Chris' family."

This is understandably a very difficult time for both families involved.

Sony Cuts Ties With Dr. Luke Amid Kesha Legal Battle

Sony Music has dropped Dr. Luke amid his ongoing legal battle with Kesha, Cosmopolitan reports. Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke's legal name) will no longer be the CEO of Kemosabe Records, a label that he founded at Sony back in 2011, and "does not have the authority to act on its behalf,"court papers from April 21 state.

Dr. Luke has been under fire since Kesha first filed a lawsuit against him in 2014, accusing the music producer of rape and emotional abuse. Kesha added Sony to the lawsuit, alleging that the company had knowledge of Dr. Luke's abusive treatment toward other female entertainers under his label as well as Kesha. Kesha was unsuccessful in getting out of her contract with Sony.

While Dr. Luke being removed from Sony (he still has some production obligations to complete before he'll truly be gone) seems like a step forward for the "Free Kesha" movement, The Hollywood Reporter claims this could create problems with Kesha's original lawsuit, as she would no longer have Sony as a "go-between" if they are completely out of the picture.

We wish Kesha all the best as this legal battle continues.
