4 Must-Haves for Every Road Trip

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Sweetly Sally, an InfluenceHer Collective member. Read the full post here.

This is my last week of school before I head off to spring break in Florida! A bunch of my girlfriends and I are headed to my house in South Florida—we are so beyond ready and excited!

For the road trip down to Florida, we have about a 12-hour drive… Yeah. Talk about a serious road trip. We are leaving Friday morning really early to get a head-start on the day. I am riding with a few friends in the car and we are going to have so much fun! For the car ride itself, we are prepared with snacks and music. Whenever I’m on a road trip, I always have some essentials that I need to survive the long day.

Food

This one is a given for anyone, but for road trips especially, I love the snacky food like popcorn, carrots, or animal crackers. There’s really no way to eat healthy on the road (at least not in my book), so why not just go all out, yeah?

Water

While I don’t like to drink tons of water on the car ride, I do like to have some to keep hydrated. Drinking too much water means bathroom breaks, which means more stops, so drinking water is kept to a minimum unfortunately.

Music

love listening to some nice throwback music in the car. I love me some Hannah Montana, High School Musical, old Avril Lavigne, you know… The usual… I think that music really helps the time go by fast. If I didn’t have music, I really don’t know what I would occupy my time with.

24 Million People or More Could Lose Their Insurance if the GOP's Obamacare Replacement Passes

$
0
0

New estimates from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) place the number of people who would lose coverage under the American Health Care Act at 26 million by 2026. The OMB’s number is a full 2 million more than the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) original estimate of 24 million, and it’s left the Trump administration in a bit of an uncomfortable spot, Politico reports.

On Monday, the CBO released its analysis of the Republican attempt at replacing the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. The news that there would be a total of 54 million uninsured Americans in 10 years, with nearly 14 million losing coverage in the first year, was a blow for an already unpopular bill. Democrats were quick to point to these numbers as proof that the American Health Care Act was bad news. "Trumpcare would be a nightmare for the American people," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a press conference. On the other hand, a number of conservative Republicans felt that the new proposal did not go far enough to cut spending or entitlements, with some even calling it "Obamacare Lite" or “Obamacare 2.0.”

The White House was quick to dismiss the CBO’s numbers. According to BuzzFeed News, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said the projections of uninsured people rising are “virtually impossible.” He went on to say that “We disagree strenuously with the report.” So it was confusing when the White House’s own projections turned out even more concerning numbers. But, apparently, the OMB’s projection of 26 million people losing insurance isn’t actually the White House's own analysis of the bill's merits. “This is not an analysis of the bill in any way whatsoever,” White House Communications Director Michael Dubke told Politico. “This is OMB trying to project what CBO’s score will be using CBO’s methodology."

Even before the CBO and OMB did the math, the Republican proposal was causing concern for many Americans. It eliminates the Obamacare mandate that everyone must have coverage or face a fine. It also charges older Americans more for their premiums, particularly those with lower incomes, and places the burden of Medicaid on the states by cutting down on the amount of federal money allotted to the program. Over the next decade, the new plan saves the government around $337 billion. But it’s seen opposition from numerous major healthcare groups, including the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, and AARP. Are the government savings worth it if millions of people are hurt in the process?

President Trump has been largely silent on the American Health Care Act, though he has pledged to sign it if it crosses his desk. Getting it through Congress will be the next challenge for the bill’s advocates, including House Majority Leader Paul Ryan. Republicans have already begun pointing to the CBO’s inaccurate prediction about how many people would sign up for Obamacare to undermine the office's importance. Still, many are concerned that the first major attempt to replace the 44th president’s signature policy initiative will fail. "It's awful. It has to be a concern," Sen. Bill Cassidy, of Lousiana, said of the budget office findings. "President Trump said he wanted as many people covered as under Obamacare." Clearly, that’s not likely to happen.

A Kansas State Senator Compared Planned Parenthood to a Nazi Concentration Camp

Kansas State Sen. Steve Fitzgerald is under fire for comparing Planned Parenthood to the Nazi death camp Dachau, but he’s choosing to stand by his comments. According to The Associated Press, he’s actually taking it one step further by saying, “I think the Nazis ought to be incensed by the comparison.”

Fitzgerald is a well-known opponent of abortion, having supported legislation like a 2013 fetal personhood bill that defined life as beginning at fertilization, and required doctors to give patients false information about the dangers of abortion. One of his constituents, Ali Weinel of Prairie Village, Kansas, decided to channel her frustration about his politics into a good deed by donating $25 in her Fitzgerald's name to a local Planned Parenthood chapter. “I just was so angry and knew that the only way I could be less angry was if I made a difference. So that’s what I did,” she told The Kansas City Star.

The senator was less than pleased to receive news of a donation in his name and decided to send a letter to express his anger. “It was either send them that or ignore it,” Fitzgerald said in an interview with The Star. “I figured, I don’t want my name associated as a donation to Planned Parenthood, in my name, to go on undenounced by me.” The letter stated that “this as bad—or worse—than having one’s name associated with Dachau.” Approximately 28,000 people died in Dachau, the first of the Nazis’ concentration camps. It was also the site of many of their most gruesome medical experiments.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, was quick to condemn the senator’s language, telling The Star, “It’s this kind of inflammatory language that condones the type of behavior we see sometimes outside of women’s health centers...It’s really disturbing to me that this kind of rhetoric and language is considered acceptable.” Fortunately, Fitzgerald’s words may have backfired: Planned Parenthood Great Plains has already seen multiple new donations in his name.

Butt Hair: Everything You Want to Know But Were Afraid to Ask

$

Although it’s less talked about than the hair on other parts of the bikini area, butt hair is a pain in the derrière. If you’re wondering what the scientific reason behind butt hair is, you can pretty much thank puberty. The butt area is a normal place where hair could grow. Body hair is meant to help protect from infection and foreign particlesBut no stress—removing hair on your body is totally common and safe if you do it correctly.

At the end of the day, it’s your body, and obviously it’s completely up to you—and not anyone else—whether you want to leave the hairs be, or wave (more like wax) them goodbye. But if you are looking to deal with the hair on your behind, we have the go-to guide for everything you could ever want to know about the hair down there.

We talked to Sharon Acheson, the Head Esthetician and Manager of Bare Wax Bar, which is home to Vancouver’s Brazilian Waxing Experts. She gave us the inside scoop on dealing with butt hair. The process can be pretty similar to removing hair on other parts of your body, but make sure to be extra careful since that’s probably one of the (if not the) last places you’d want razor burn or a cut.

Professional waxing:

Waxing is one of the best ways to remove hair in the bikini area—and that includes your butt. It’s quick and efficient. Acheson recommends waxing, but says it’s best to leave it to the professionals. “Get it professionally done because your hair grows in all different directions and it’s awkward to wax back there and do it yourself. You can also break the hair and then ingrown hairs can grow and it’s hard to treat them back in that area,” she says.

If you’re worried about pain, here’s some reassurance—when compared to a bikini wax, Acheson says that, “It doesn’t hurt as much there. The hair there isn’t as coarse as everywhere else and the nerve endings are more insensitive, so the skin is able to get waxed and not feel uncomfortable.” Amber*, a college student, prefers Brazilian waxing and says it actually doesn't hurt as much as people would think. "It's really quick and the pain goes away quickly. It's simpler and it lasts longer. It depends on the person though. My sister doesn't like it." So if you're used to getting bikini waxes, the butt area will hurt even less! But if you thought a bikini wax was way too painful or you have a low pain tolerance, you definitely want to factor that into your decision. If you're worried about pain but still want to wax, try sugaring or hard wax—those are the less painful waxing methods.

Different types of body wax:

Sugaring

This is best if you have sensitive skin because it only removes dead skin cells. It’s all organic and made just with sugar, water, and lemon. “It works on any skin condition, such as eczema, and will not upset the area,” says Acheson. “It is a medium temperature and not hot, so there is no risk of burning.” The downside? It's not as effective in removing short hairs.

Hard wax

This is similar to sugaring and it’s also great for sensitive skin or anyone prone to irritation. It's a relatively less painful method of waxing. However, hard wax can leave you with some tiny hairs because it's not as effective as wax strips in removing short hairs.

Wax strips

These are quick and efficient because they get all the teeny tiny hairs. With this method, Acheson says you won’t be left with any short hairs, which can sometimes happen with sugaring and hard wax.

If you’re going in for a professional bikini wax, Acheson says you can usually get the butt area included, depending on the wax package.

Waxing at home:

If you are going to wax at home, the most effective method is to apply it in the direction of hair growth and remove in the opposite direction. Try Parissa’s Wax Strips for Face & Bikini ($9.99 at Ulta).

Before you wax, make sure the hair is around 1/4 of an inch or else hair removal might not be effective. Also exfoliate and clean the area with some body wash or soap beforehand. Test a bit of the wax on your skin to make sure the temperature isn't too hot or cold. The temperature of the wax needs to be just right to be effective. If it's too cold the wax won't work properly and if it's too hot, you could burn yourself. When waxing, Acheson says that "You need a good firm pull on the skin"—so try to hold your skin taut.

After your wax, you can easily remove any wax residue and moisturize your skin with baby oil or soak a cotton pad in olive oil.

Aftercare:

After your wax, Acheson recommends using a dry bikini brush on the skin the day after because it helps to get rid of any dead skin cells. Try Merben’s Jute Bikini Brush ($16 at Merben), which helps exfoliate, prevent ingrown hairs and remove dead skin cells. You can even take steps to prevent ingrown hair in the future! Try Anthony's Ingrown Hair Treatment ($32 at Sephora). It removes dead skin, calms the skin and frees the hair before it becomes ingrown, preventing future ingrown hair irritation.

Shaving:

If you want, shaving is also an option—but it’s not necessarily the best one. It can be much harder to reach certain areas on your behind, so use a mirror to help. Wash the area with soap and exfoliate before you reach for the razor. Be extra cautious as you obviously don’t want a cut or nick there. Be sure to check out our guide on shaving down there for additional tips. But beware! “You can get a shaving rash from it because obviously that area is quite sensitive and moisture changes. If you cut yourself, you can be quite sore and irritated,” says Acheson. For Taylor*, a college student, shaving down there can be super itchy if not done right.  “Shaving can itch like crazy—and tons of my friends agree. It can rash, it can itch, and I’ve had times when it was irritated for days." Taylor's advice? "Use lots of shaving cream and you want the razor to be good quality. As long as you’re careful, you probably won’t get a lot of itching by using shaving cream and getting a sharp razor." Also make sure to shave in the direction of hair growth.

Alex*, another college student, recommends adding lotion (any kind that you'd usually use on your body) to the area after shaving. "I always put lotion down there right after shaving so that it doesn't get irritated. It also helps keep it hygenic. I'd say do it two to three times the first day after shaving." You can also try Bliss's Ingrown Hair Eliminating Pads ($38 at Ulta), which soothes and helps prevent post shaving ingrown hairs. Exfoliating can help prevent ingrown hairs as well.

Another thing to consider? Shaving will only last a day or two. "At first shaving doesn’t come back for a while, but then it ends up being a day or two", says Taylor. "You have to shave more frequently as time goes by. Shaving is sort of tedious and it’s sort of difficult to just have to do it so frequently."

But there are pros! Or else why would so many people continue to reach for the razor? Some of the benefits of shaving include that it's budget-friendly, easy to do at home and can be convenient once you do get the hang of it. So if you think the pros outweigh the cons, go for it! But as we've said, be extremely cautious and generous with the shaving cream.

You can always try using a tweezer to remove hairs you missed with the razor, but this can be a lot more difficult to navigate when you're dealing with your behind.

Laser Hair Removal:

If you want a more permanent option, consider laser hair removal. Laser treatments reduce hair growth to non-existent, so you’ll never have to worry about butt hair removal again! However, it is on the costly side and requires more of a commitment to sessions. “I used to be a laser therapist and it’s very stubborn for that area,” says Acheson. "It can be a bit painful and the hair doesn’t go as well as it should. Laser is expensive." According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, on average, laser hair removal is a whooping $235 per session—and keep in mind it usually takes at least an average of three to seven sessions to be permanent.

If and how you want to remove hair is up to you and you alone, so choose the method that makes you most comfortable! There are so many different ways to remove hair, so if one method doesn't work for you, no worries—there are others out there and you have the tools to find the one that helps you feel your best.

21 Things Only Pisces Girls Understand

$
0
0

If you're a Pisces, you don't need a psychic to give you the scoop on your best personality traits (being compassionate and creative) or worst habits (ghosting and eating your feelings). Aside from being ruled by planet Neptune and other things, like food, emotions and being a killer friend, here are some other ways you can relate if you're characterized by the fish.

1. You’re constantly being told you’re too “emotional.”

You might as well list “crying” as a skill on your resume.

2. You tend to get lost in your thoughts at the most random times.

Let’s spend 40 minutes in the shower imagining what it’d be like to be a mermaid!

3. You cannot make decisions to save your life.

You spend an unhealthy amount of time contemplating whether you want ramen noodles or nuggets…before you end up indulging in both.

4. You can be pretty selfless and end up getting taken advantage of because of it.

You’d literally give your friends the clothes off your back, if you hadn’t turned into Chewbacca over the winter.

5. You’re incredibly moody…and you know it.

You change moods more often than you change underwear. It’s that serious.

6. But your energy still attracts all kinds of people that can’t get enough of you.

If you hadn’t doused your hair in so much dry shampoo today, you’d be flipping it right now.

7. You soak in vibes and are very intuitive, which makes it easy for you to connect with strangers.

You’ve made BFFs in so many clubs and house party bathrooms, you’ve lost count.

8. So being labeled as “shy” when you simply don’t feel like talking annoys the crap out of you.

You’re not quiet; you’d just rather people-watch than people-interact sometimes.

9. As much as you enjoy being social, you truly cherish your alone time.

Nothing like being able to eat, read, masturbate, sleep, Netflix, write and relax in peace!

10. You get into your loner phases and end up ghosting your friends more often than you’d like to admit.

You’re the queen of reading a text and forgetting to reply to it for the next three days.

11. You’re incredibly sensitive, so you hate and actively avoid confrontations.

You’d rather have an armpit rash than deal with someone you love being mad at you.

12. But you can easily redeem yourself with a good apology, joke or promise of a fun adventure.

There’s nothing that a girls' night of wine, rom-coms and heart-to-hearts can’t fix.

13. You’re really ambitious but sometimes have trouble putting your goals into action.

You love the idea of completing a marathon, but when it comes to training…you’d rather plan how many miles you want to run…while eating a bag of potato chips.

14. However, you’re happiest when you’re expressing yourself, through writing, dance, music or fashion.

Or stress-eating, cry-venting and lip-syncing to old Mariah Carey songs.

15. You think love is beautiful but also can’t get enough of the single life.

Nothing satisfies you like being in a relationship…with food.

16. You alternate between being super clingy but also needing your space.

You need affection, but you also need a full bed to sleep and freely fart in.

17. The holidays make you super sentimental.

You’re either really happy or really depressed, depending on how many Christmas cookies you’ve eaten.

18. You have a killer memory, which is why you tend to hold grudges.

You’ll never forgive your mom for telling you that vitamins were candy that would give you superpowers when you were five. Never.

19. You’re a great listener, and everyone comes to you with their problems.

You’d make a killer therapist if you weren’t so emotionally unstable!

20. Which makes you feel great because you love helping others in any way you can.

It makes you feel as warm and gooey inside as a freshly-baked donut, which you've been craving for the last half hour.

21. You care so much about everyone else—and forget to give yourself the same amount of care too.

Don’t forget to save some love for yourself, girl! You deserve it.

Rachel Maddow is Claiming to Have President Trump's Tax Returns

$

President Trump's refusal to release his tax returns has been a point of contention since the presidential election - but it turns out that we might be getting some answers tonight.

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow said on Tuesday night that she has obtained Trump's tax returns - and plans to release them at 9 p.m. on her show Tuesday evening.

In a later tweet, the anchor clarified that the specific documents obtained by MSNBC were from 2005 - the same year, according to the New York Post, that Trump founded the controversial, now-defunct Trump University.

Apparently, Daily Beast writer and investigative journalist David Cay Johnson is behind the findings, and he announced that he'd be appearing on Maddow's show to "break a big story about Trump and his taxes."

Considering the president's notorious avoidance of the subject of his tax returns, this is likely about to be HUGE.

The Internet is Absolutely Losing It Over These Topshop Jeans

Generally speaking, Topshop is one of our go-to's when it comes to jeans - the brand offers tons of lengths for those of us on the shorter or taller side, and Topshop's "mom jean" style is basically universally-flattering. However, it turns out that the Internet is, erm, questioning the brand's judgement over its latest denim style.

You see, Topshop decided to create a variation on its much-loved mom jean style via the addition of some clear plastic panels that show off your... knees? Yeah I'm not really sure either.

The "Moto Clear Patent Mom Jeans," as Topshop has dubbed them, retail on the site and at Nordstrom for $95 - where they have garnered some (probably sarcastic) five star reviews, including one from a reviewer who said, "I'm so glad I finally found pants that allow my knees to see the world! My knees are so beautiful but I get cold in the winter so this is the perfect solution to show them off!"

In case Nordstrom's 22-and-counting reviews weren't already hilarious enough, the Internet also has some serious ~feelings~ about them.

And then there was Team Clear Knee Mom Jeans who were totally here for the whole entire thing:

TBH, I feel like you could potentially tell a lot about a person depending which camp they fall into when it comes to clear knee mom jeans - the Internet probably hasn't been this divided over an article of clothing since the whole "What color is the dress?" fiasco.

2 Pages of Trump's 2005 Tax Returns Have Been Made Public

Two pages of President Donald Trump’s 2005 tax return were released Tuesday night, marking only the second time that any of Trump’s tax returns have been made public despite significant pressure to release them. Investigative journalist David Cay Johnston of DCReport.org received the pages in the mail. He then went on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow to explain the documents.

The two pages show that Trump made $150 million in income and paid $38 million in taxes in 2005—a 25 percent tax rate.

The White House released a statement with information about the returns minutes before the MSNBC show aired.

“You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,” the White House statement read. “Before being elected President, Mr. Trump was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required.”

In October, The New York Times received a page from Trump’s 1995 tax returns that showed a reported loss of over $900 million. Experts said that Trump could have used the loss to avoid paying income tax for 18 years, but these 2005 returns show that he did pay taxes, at least that year.

So who sent the returns? Johnston speculated that Trump himself may have sent them. “Donald creates his own reality,” Johnston said, explaining that Trump may have leaked the returns if he believed it would serve his self-interest.

As NBC reports, Trump is the first president since Richard Nixon not to release his tax returns.

According to Cara, the book is a coming-of-age story about four sixteen-year-olds, "who are all trying to figure out who they are and navigate the minefield of school and relationships. Until it all changes one day..." Maybe she was inspired by working with young adult novelist John Green via her role as Margot in the movie adaptation Paper Towns?

Delevingne said that the book will drop in October, adding that the process of writing it has been life-changing for her. You can pre-order Mirror, Mirror here - which we definitely will be doing ASAP.

6 Things to Do Instead of Stressing About Acceptance Letters

So, you’ve submitted all your college applications, sent out your reference letters, wrote your admissions essays, and paid your application fees. Now, all you can do is wait, and that’s just as stressful as completing all your materials on time — if not more.

But once you’re done applying, there are still a few things you can do to make sure you’re ready for the next step in your education and your life. Here are six things you should do instead of stressing about those acceptance letters.

1. Visit campuses

Most colleges have on-campus events for accepted students or enhanced visits for those who want a more in-depth look at the school. These are great to attend to narrow down your short list if you’re still not entirely sure which school is your top pick.

Before you go to one of these events, you should write down all the questions you have so that you’ll remember when it comes time to speak with students, take tours or meet with faculty. That way, you’re not kicking yourself for forgetting that question you kept meaning to ask.

2. Focus on your last semester

Graduation time is coming and senioritis might start to kick in, but it’s important to end off on a high note. Since the college hunt and application process are over, it might seem like this is a good time to ease up on the studying a little bit, but that’s not a good idea.

“Remember, your current academics matter!” says Chris Helvajian, assitant director of admissions at Chapman University. “Continue to perform at the best of your abilities in the classroom and excel academically.”

Even after you’re accepted, colleges still watch and make sure that their prospective students are performing at the level they expect. You don’t want to do all that hard work to get accepted just for the offer to be rescinded after a case of senioritis.

3. Line up a summer job

Being accepted to school is great, but so is having a way to make money during the summer months — especially heading into college. If you’re going to be a residential student, it’s even more important to have some money saved for all the things you’ll need for your new dorm room. Not to mention all the books and supplies you’ll need for classes.

Getting a summer job is also a great way to beef up your resume if you plan on getting a job at school, or even for internship applications down the road. Some great jobs for the summer are camp counseling, lifeguarding, nannying, or tutoring. Or, if you’re more career-minded, you could always ask a family member if there are any opportunities for students at their workplace.

“I worked at a summer camp the summer between my last year of high school and first year of college,” says Abby*, another student at New Haven. “It was a really great decision for me because I got to have some fun and be outdoors as well as make some money. Looking back on it now, it was also a great stress reliever. I was really nervous before leaving for college.”

The best time to start applying for those summer jobs is right now, so look around and see what’s available in your area!

4. Complete scholarship applications

Unless you win a full ride to that school you’re waiting for an acceptance letter from, you’ll have to find a way to pay the tuition. Scholarships are one of the best ways to earn the money to do that.

Luckily, for students like us, there are thousands of scholarships out there that you can potentially win. “Apply for everything,” says Krystal Meijas, a senior at the University of New Haven, “There are so many obscure scholarships out there that you’re bound to find something.”

From writing essays, to getting a little more creative, various scholarships ask you to showcase a wide variety of skills. There will be a few that you’ll have a good shot at winning, and if you don’t know where to start, there are tons of scholarship databases out there that you can start looking at, like Scholarship Points, Chegg Scholarships, and Cappex. These sites offer thousands of different scholarships, and they even match you with the ones that you should apply for based on your race, gender, sexual orientation and potential major.

5. Complete your FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form that every prospective or current college student should fill out, because it determines how much money in aid you can receive from the federal government, to grants, to low-interest loans.

You never know what kind of aid the government will give you, so this is super important to complete! Make sure you sit down with a parent so they can help you, especially with all the household income questions.

6. And of course, just relax!

Stressing won’t change the results or how quickly you get them, so the best thing you can do is relax and focus on things that you can control for now.

“A lot of my teachers and advisors emphasized that this wasn’t something that could be changed by thinking about it,” Krystal says. “They encouraged me to just live life as normal because stressing while waiting was only going to make it worse.”

Hurting and applying for colleges are both super stressful in and of themselves. You’ve already gotten through all of that, so you should be proud of yourself!

We all have to go through the dreadful waiting process, but once you get that letter in the mail, it will definitely be worth it. Good luck, collegiettes!

An Open Letter To My Permanent Best Friend

High school friendships are usually short-lived, mostly fair-weather and always complicated. What even are the odds of remaining friends after graduation? It’s like high school is the ocean, graduation is the shore and the friends you make are the life rafts: they help you survive while you’re in the water but it’s hard to see the point once you make it to land.

You were more like my lighthouse. Always one step ahead with your feet planted firmly on the ground, you lit my way through the final years of high school and gave me a view from above when I forgot where I came from. You are as much a part of my shoreline as you were my ocean, my permanent best friend in this life of ephemerality.

I don’t mean permanent in the way people might think. We haven’t known each other since we were five. We didn’t always go to the same schools. We met each other late and we’ve been separated more than we’ve been together—but despite everything, you’ve stayed. You are permanent to me because no matter how far away I drift, you remain.

You’re real with me even when I don’t want you to be and I think that’s what I love most about you. There are people that I go to when I want the kind of advice that just feeds into what I wanted to hear, and then there's you. I go to you when I can’t ignore the truth anymore, and you’re always there to tell it to me. But even if you tell me the same thing a million times and I never listen, you still support me when I ask you to say it just once more. And that’s the real money. Real friendship. You’re not afraid to tell me when I’m being stupid, but you love me enough to let me continue until I’m ready to stop.

You make the hard things in life just a little less hard. Because at the end of the day, even if I lose everything else, I always know that I’ll have you. Yes, we met in high school but we aren’t "friends from high school." We’re four hour Facetime calls and "which pic should I post on Insta?" We’re hating everybody and complaining when they don’t love us. We’re nine-hour time differences and two years apart. We’re moon tattoos and a Caribbean cruise. We’re opposite sides of the planet and just plain opposite. We are so much more than just friends from high school, we’re friends for life.

The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Getting the Perfect Manicure

Oh no, it happened. What was once a flawless, shiny, beautiful manicure is now chipped to the point of no return. It’s time to re-do your nails, but who has the time for three coats plus drying time? That’s why we’ve made you this must-have guide to getting salon-worthy nails quickly and without too much effort.

Setting the Stage

Ghost of Nail Polish’s Past:

RIP chipped mani, it’s been real. But that was the old you. Now it’s time for an update. Before you can get updated though, you must remove the polish that is holding you back. If it’s speed you’re looking for, then go for an acetone based remover. If not, then go for the non-acetone based remover since it’s better for your nails.

And that tricky glitter polish? We got a neat little hack from Danielle Stohl at Glow Salon & Spa in St. Louis for getting it off without too much fuss. Take a cotton pad doused with acetone-based nail polish remover and leave it on the nail for a few seconds. Then rub off whatever you can with the cotton pad. For what’s left over, use a buffer or nail file and gently buffer over the nail. That’s what they do at the salon, according to Stohl.

If you’re out of nail polish remover, there is another solution. Painting any wet nail polish over the remnants of your last manicure will wipe off the leftover polish. Stohl says to use a toothpick to help get any remnants off. No nail polish remover required.

Don’t Soak!

Even if that’s how manicurists do it at salons, it’s 1) unnecessary and 2) not all that great for your nails because it makes it trickier for the new polish to stick, causing premature chipping. No bueno. We say no need to waste time, just skip it all together.

Show Time

Polished—A Love Story:

We are #blessed to live in a world that offers us a ton of variation on what kinds of nail polishes we can choose from. We can go the classic route and use good old-fashioned regular nail polish. Or, we can go the modern route and use gel polish. It’s totally justified if you don’t know the difference; we've broken it down for you.

Regular nail polish: We’re talking a straight up nail lacquer. Along with a base coat and a top coat, this type normally requires two coats to get the full effect—but not always. Like Brianne James, a junior at Ryerson University, says, “I like any nail polish that only needs one coat because the color is so rich. I’m so lazy and any nail polish that requires more than two coats MAX makes me want to cry.” She suggests the H&M beauty polishes. It is important to note, though, that putting on one thick, gloopy coat will take forever to dry. So sometimes going for two thin coats is worth the effort and will be a time saver in the long run.

But, a nail polish line like Sephora’s Formula X is perfect for when you only want to apply one coat. It’s “super pigmented and long-lasting,” according to Brianna Barker, an employee at Sephora. In terms of color, though, metallic nail polishes consistently only need one coat, as do most glitter polishes.

Gel polish: This could be the lazy girl’s new “it” beauty product. It’s fast, easy to use, and stays on for two weeks without dulling or chipping. Lucy Freitag, a sophomore at Southeast Missouri State, says, “If you have even 20 minutes you can have nails that last a long time.” Sounds good to us. So what brands should you go for? Freitag suggests Sally Hansen Miracle Gel and Jen Morgan, a senior at Messiah College, says, “Wet n’ Wild just came out with 1-step gel polishes that apply like a dream!”

Truthfully, whichever nail polish you choose will be beautiful, but it is worth it to buy quality nail polish. Bridget Higgins, a junior at University of Massachussetts-Amherst, says, “Investing in decent nail polish is SO important. Bad brands will just chip off, looking cheap in a matter of a day or two. I use a good clear coat, Essie nail polish… it works like magic.”

To prevent polish from getting all over the skin around your nail, you can put Vaseline around the nail to keep the skin clean! Just make sure not to get the product on your nail, otherwise the polish won’t stay on. Just wipe the Vaseline off with a Q-tip when your nails are dry!

Encore

Make it Quick!

If you opt for the regular nail polish, you have a couple options to make it dry quickly. One option is to use drying drops, like Essie Quick-e. These drops can be used after the top coat to set the whole manicure quickly. Another option is nail polish drying spray. “There's a crazy good nail polish drying spray you can get at Target—the kind that you use and then can make your bed 2 minutes later. The plain old Target/Up&Up brand is really good!” suggests Margeaux Biché, a sophomore at Barnard College. If you’re putting on multiple coats, it's worth it to give the polish a minute to dry before applying the next coat. Your overall drying time will be shorter!

Fixer-Upper:

Smudges could be what makes doing your nails take the longest, if you’re someone who feels compelled to fix it. The good news is that we can help. One of the most effective ways to fix a smudge is to lick it, and then gently smooth it over with your finger. Don’t lick it while it’s wet, but when it’s in that tacky phase between full-on wet and full-on dry. Also, there is an important distinction between licking it and eating it. Don’t eat it; it’s not edible.

If you’re concerned about putting your mouth anywhere near nail polish, another technique is to use nail polish remover. Put a dab of nail polish remover on a Q-tip and go over the smudged nail carefully, just to make it even again. Then go back over the nail with the polish you used before.

In the end, though, the best thing to do is to not fidget. Set aside some time when you don’t have to use your fingers so much, that way you can avoid smudging while they are drying. After all, the quickest way to fix a smudge is to avoid having one.

And they said we couldn’t be lazy and look good? Please. We’re not lazy, we’re efficient.

Nick Viall Says He Doesn't Want to Be Famous, But Vanessa Grimaldi Is Already Hinting at Another Reality Show

Bachelor Nation was pretty shocked when special education teacher Vanessa Grimaldi, who seemed to be, ahem, “here for the right reasons,” turned out to have an IMDb page. And Nick Viall already had Dancing with the Stars lined up before his stint as the Bachelor was even over. (Shocker! Not.) So do we really expect Vanessa and Nick to be stepping out of the spotlight anytime soon? Let’s be real, probs not.

Nick claims he doesn’t want to be famous, but Vanessa, his new fiancée, says the couple are open to future reality TV opportunities. Hmm, something isn’t adding up here… Even though we have had enough of seeing Nick on TV, we doubt that he feels the same. This was his fourth time on the Bachelor franchise after all.

On Saturday, former Bachelor Chris Soules told ET that Nick loves fame. “He loves being famous. He loves the spotlight, he really, truly does,” Soules said. “If he wouldn't admit that, he's lying.” Also, is Chris Soules even relevant anymore?

In response, Viall told ET on Tuesday that he doesn’t want to be in the spotlight. "Actually, no [I don't want to be famous]," he said. "It's funny, because the opportunities I've been given in The Bachelor world, quite honestly, other than Andi's season, those were opportunities that were presented to me, and I certainly was open to them. It was the right decision."

Yet on the very same day, his fiancée gave a pretty opposite response. According to Refinery29, during a press conference Tuesday, when asked about the couple’s future in the reality TV world, Grimaldi responded, "Never say never!" So she's not exactly closing the door on being reality TV stars again, but she did add, "Right now, we're just focusing on our relationship."

So the guy who’s been on the Bachelor franchise four times and is set to compete on Dancing with the Stars doesn’t want to be famous? And his former wannabe actress fiancée who's open to appearing on other reality shows doesn't either? Yep, that sounds accurate…

Nick will be on Dancing with the Stars for the next three months, so tbh, let’s see if they even last that long. And PLEASE no more spin-off shows like Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After?
