16 Things Only People Who Leave Everything Until the Last Minute Understand

$

0

While the start of a new year is a great time to create new goals, if you're someone who tends to put off your responsibilities, it's probably safe to say that shit gets old real quick. No matter how hard you try (let's be honest, most of the time it's not that hard), you always seem to find yourself back in the same place. Here are 17 things only the responsibility-deflecting, die-hard procrastinators will understand.

1. You're always excited about new opportunities to get your shit together

2. When your bad habit becomes harmful to your success, you do everything in your power to make sure it doesn't happen again

3. You concoct the most elaborate of plans in order to get back on schedule

4. Despite your efforts, you can't help but revert back to old habits

5. Making seemingly legitimate but actually bullshit excuses is kind of your thing

6. Your friends have learned by now that "On my way!" really means "Still in bed"

7. You have at least three different alarms in the morning to ensure that you eventually get out of bed

8. You have mastered the art of staying up all night to finish something you should've had done a long time ago

9. You've also perfected the art of rolling out of bed and going straight to class or work

10. You've probably felt a great deal of anxiety about all the things you have to do

11. Which is ultimately worsened by your compulsion to act as if they don't exist

12. Your procrastination methods have gotten really creative over the years

13. You could have literally minutes to spare before a responsibility needs to be completed and somehow you still find time to procrastinate

14. You're pretty good at talking your way through homework you totally ignored and didn't do

15. When you do make moves to get ahead, you're a little over indulgent with rewarding yourself

16. Nothing comforts you more than knowing someone else is in the same struggle boat

New year, new us, fam.

Ryan Gosling Put His Love for Eva Mendes on Full Display in His Golden Globes Speech

Ryan Gosling doesn’t need to do much for me to love him, but he still made me swoon all over when he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in La La Land. What was becoming a true fangirl moment turned out to be a little more emotional when Ryan began his heartfelt acceptance speech (after making a Ryan Reynolds joke, as you do).

Ryan and his partner Eva Mendes are pretty private for a celebrity couple, so when Ryan delivered a speech entirely focused on Eva and their two daughters, it was an interesting surprise for everyone. “When I was singing and dancing and playing piano,” Ryan explained of his award-winning role, “my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother with his battle with cancer.”

“If she hadn’t taken all that on so I could have this experience [someone else would be up here],” Ryan shared. “Sweetheart, thank you.”

Hear that? That’s a million people around the nation weeping at this sign of true love.

If that admiration for Eva wasn’t enough to make the mood at the Globes turn poignant, Ryan signed off by dedicating the award to Eva’s brother Juan Carlos Mendes, who eventually died of cancer this past April, People reports.

Here’s to Eva for being an incredible mother, sister and girlfriend from behind the scenes, and props to Ryan for recognizing just how strong his lady is. Totally an award-worthy couple.

Meryl Streep Dropped Some Serious Knowledge in Her Golden Globes Speech

Meryl Streep was honored with this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Golden Globes, and her speech was arguably the best part of the night. Her moving, powerful and extremely relevant delivery called out President-Elect Donald Trump, highlighted the diverse backgrounds of Hollywood stars and quoted the late Carrie Fisher—all of this when her voice was nearly gone from laryngitis.

“Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press,” Streep began. “You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it: Hollywood, foreigners and the press. But who are we, and what is Hollywood, anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places.” Streep stressed the importance of the arts, and the fact that without this diverse group of people from all over the world, we would be stuck watching football and mixed martial arts (which, as she pointed out, are not the arts).

Streep then spoke out against Donald Trump for his mockery of disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski. “There was one performance this year that stunned me,” she said. “Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it.” She explained that this real life humiliation gave others permission to do the same thing. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

Streep moved next to discussing the importance of the press and their responsibility to hold Trump (and others) accountable. “We’re going to need them going forward,” she said. “And they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”

She concluded her speech by reminding herself and her peers of the privilege and responsibility they have as actors. “As my friend the dear departed Princess Leia said to me,” Streep said, “Take your broken heart. Make it into art.” Streep has won eight Golden Globes and has amassed 29 nominations. She can now add this speech to her list of iconic performances.

Ryan Reynolds Kissed Andrew Garfield After Losing at the Golden Globes & The Internet Loved It

Stars have to turn to someone for comfort when they lose at an awards show. But it’s safe to say that no one watching the Golden Globes was expecting this blink-and-you-missed-it kiss between Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield when Ryan Gosling walked past them to accept his award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, a category in which Reynolds was also nominated.

We had no idea this bromance was a thing, but Blake Lively certainly seems to approve. Do you think she's cheering for Gosling or her husband's makeout skills?

Twitter blew up with this viral moment, coming up with the best idea ever: a Deadpool and Spiderman flick?! Yes please.

Forget all those other celebrity couples. We're just hoping this moment of brotherly love is the start (or even the continuation!) of a beautiful friendship.

How She Got There: Amy Wicks, Senior Fashion Editor at Polyvore

Name: Amy Wicks
Job Title and Description: Senior Fashion Editor, Polyvore
College Name/Major: University of Washington, Journalism
Twitter Handle:@amywicks01
Instagram Handle:@arwicks7

What does your current job entail? Is there such thing as a typical day?

Amy Wicks: I do so many different things! On site, I create and curate fashion, beauty and celebrity content. I also write fresh content for our emails and push notifications. I work with our community team to help delight our members and with our PR team to tell the Polyvore story. Recently, I've been hosting more events for Polyvore (we've had some fun ones with Versace, Rebecca Minkoff and Matt Bernson) and also acting as Polyvore's spokesperson on TV, including Good Morning America. I also work on partnering with brands we love, like Allure and Cosmopolitan, to help introduce Polyvore to new people.

What is the best part of your job?

AW: The freedom to try new things! During my time at Polyvore, I don't think anyone has ever said that I couldn't at least try something new. If it didn't work, I would learn from it and move on. The ability to try new things keeps this job fresh for me.

What was your first entry level job in your field and how did you get it?

AW: My first job was as an editorial assistant at Washington CEO magazine, in Seattle. It was the best job! Since it was a small staff, I got to write so many stories each month, ranging from interviews to spa reviews. It was such a blast! My first editor at Washington CEO and I have stayed in touch and he officiated my wedding last year in Tulum.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

AW: How important it is to know the major (and minor) players in media and fashion. It's not enough to read WWD, Vogue, the Fashion & Style section of The New York Times, read the occasional fashion book, etc. I would have had more confidence going into my first interview in NYC if I had done all my homework and showed up totally prepared.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

AW: Jim Fallon, my editor at WWD. I learned so much about fashion, media and how to craft a good story under Jim. I grew up so much during my time at WWD, as a writer and reporter. While there, I wrote a daily media column that would often lead to angry calls from the people I wrote about and he always had my back. That meant a lot to me.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

AW: I wrote an earnings story once and got a figure wrong. It was really embarrassing and we had to run a correction. I learned that you need to double and triple check your work.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

AW: I have had so many "pinch me" moments throughout my career. One that comes to mind is the first time I attended the White House Correspondents Dinner. There were so many people in that room I admired and I remember walking up to the area where President Obama was sitting and taking a selfie with him in the background. I still look at that photo and smile.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

AW: I'm all about passion. I think it's so important to work with people who love what they do.

What advice would you give a 20-something with similar aspirations?

AW: It's all about hustle. I have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, for a few reasons, and I think that's a good thing. Keep your head down, do your best work, and good things will come. There is no such thing as a small task. Be willing to do anything. And, be nice to everyone. Relationships are everything in this business and it's a small world. You never know who you'll work with again down the line.

Donald Trump Fires Back at Meryl Streep After Her Golden Globes Speech

$

As soon as Meryl Streep took aim at Donald Trump in her Golden Globes speech last night, we knew Trump would not stay silent. After all, since winning the presidential election, he has shared his opinions on everything from Alec Baldwin's SNL impression of him to Arnold Schwarzenegger's Celebrity Apprentice ratings. How could he not respond to this? (Very simple, he could've just not, but details…)

Trump took to his fave social media platform to address Meryl's comments about his mocking of a disabled reporter. He started off by calling her "over-rated" (if you could at least spell it right, that'd be great) and a "Hillary flunky who lost big." All Meryl has done since birth is WIN, so idk what he's talking about.

I doubt a few rambling tweets from Trump will slow Meryl down. I, for one, will be bowing down to this queen and her fantastic speech for years to come.

White Celebs Kept Confusing 'Hidden Figures'&'Fences' at the Golden Globes & That's Problematic

$

During the Golden Globe Awards last night, more than just La La Land and Meryl Streep caught people's attention. On more than one occassion, white celebs confused the titles of two predominantly black films, Fences and Hidden Figures.

Fences, starring Viola Davis and Denzel Washington, is the movie version of a play by August Wilson. Hidden Figures, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, tells the story of three black women that were integral to NASA in the 1960s.

Today Show host Jenna Bush-Hager first confused the two movies when interviewing Pharrell about his nomination for Best Original Score for Hidden Figures. His reaction was priceless, but also upsetting, because you can visibly see his disappointment. The video went viral over multiple social media platforms, and #HiddenFences began trending on Twitter.

Later actor Michael Keaton mixed up the films as he read the nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Since this seems like an honest mistake anyone could make (the titles are very similar, after all), you might be wondering why it caused such an uproar. Refinery29 writer Sesali Bowen believes that the "Hidden Fences" flub is another example of white privilege. She writes, "Make no mistake about it, there is really nothing funny about the fact that two very different Black films are so easily reduced to unidentifiable versions of the same thing. This kind of microaggression is an erasure."

While there might not have been any racist intent behind Keaton and Bush-Hager's confusion, it's clear that we need to take more notice of diverse projects in Hollywood and pay attention to the details, big or small. Fences and Hidden Figures are two extraordinary films and should be recognized separately, not sloppily lumped together with other black films. Hollywood, do better.

Andrew Garfield Gave Emma Stone A Standing Ovation After Her Golden Globes Win

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are living proof that even when a couple decides to split, things don't have to be awkward between them. The pair broke up over a year ago, but Garfield showed at the Golden Globes that they still support each other 100 percent.

Stone has been nominated for a Globe three times, but last night marked her first win at the awards show, taking home the statue for Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical. As she walked towards the stage to accept her award, Garfield, who was nominated for his film, Hacksaw Ridge, could be spotted giving his ex a standing ovation. AWWW!

Even better, this probably won't be the last time Emma and Andrew cross paths during award season. They are both nominated for SAG Awards, and we're crossing our fingers they get Oscar nods, too. We ~live~ for moments like this.

Emma Stone Went In for a Hug at the Golden Globes & Things Got Hilariously Awkward

While winning your first Golden Globe marks a career milestone in the entertainment industry, Emma Stone went viral on social media for an entirely different reason last night.

The actress had good intentions when she attempted to congratulate writer-director Damien Chazelle with a hug after his win for Best Screenplay for the critically-acclaimed La La Land. Unfortunately, her execution was a little off.

When Chazelle got up to accept his award, Ryan Gosling hugged him first. Then the director used his free arm to embrace his girlfriend, Olivia Hamilton. Stone simultaneously approached Chazelle with a hug, and the situation somehow turned into a double hug. In the most adorably awkward way possible, Emma recovered.

Ever since it happened, we’ve been replaying the amazingly weird moment over and over again. While some of us may still be laughing, we feel for Emma because we’ve all been in her shoes before—just maybe not on such a public stage. With her stellar sense of humor, we imagine the actress laughed it off as soon as it happened.

Paris Police Have Arrested 17 People in Connection to Kim Kardashian's Robbery

Early Monday morning, 17 people were arrested and detained by Paris police in connection to the robbery of Kim Kardashian that occurred in October. Their ages range from 23 to 73, but most are in their 50s. An older group insinuates that they were experienced robbers.

During the Oct. 3 raid, thiefs came into Kim's apartment dressed as policemen, held her at gunpoint, tied her up, locked her in the bathroom and stole at least $10.5 million in jewelry. Kim was not harmed, but she was left badly shaken and terrified. We don't blame her.

BBC reports that they were able to find the suspects because of scant amounts of DNA that had been left on the $28,000 pendant they dropped on their way out of the hotel and on the material they used to tie up Kim K. Police searched throughout the city of Paris as well as in the suburbs of Raincy and Vincenne, and found that one of the gang members had a history of robbery and other criminal offenses.

After they discovered the DNA, police tapped into the suspects' phones and tracked a meeting between one of the suspects and a potential jewelry buyer. They now have 96 hours to question the detainees. Cosmopolitan reports that Kim will be required to be involved with identifying suspects, but it's not known if she will have to return to Paris.

This comes just after Kim made her reappearance on social media, posting a photo of herself, Kanye and their two children and captioning it "family." We wish her and her family the best as they work towards justice.

Add Glitter to Your Makeup Bag With This New Bedazzled Makeup Sponge

Hold onto your makeup bags, because everything is about to get a lot more sparkly. Remember the Silisponge that had the beauty community polarized in 2016? Enter the Evie Blender, a new take on the crazy-popular silicone-based applicator. Created by makeup artist Angie Johnson, the Evie Blender is now being advertised on Kickstarter as "the world's first perfect beauty blender."

Johnson took inspiration from noticing what herself and fellow MUAs were doing with their beauty sponges, stating "I got so frustrated that I would use them once and then they would look stained so quickly. I’d see artists throwing them away and I thought about how much waste that created.”  She goes on to explain, "I make prosthetics too and had different silicones to play with, so I thought, ‘what if I could make a textured sponge?’ I knew it would solve all the problems I was having, but the right texture and softness was essential to blend makeup perfectly." After five different designs, she came up with the "magic combo" of the perfect silicone with the shape made famous by the original Beauty Blender. Check it out in action.

Although the sponge is still in the early stages of fundraising, it has already prompted thousands of dollars in donations, which will probably make it a reality. Would you add this to your makeup collection, collegiettes?

Leighton Meester & Adam Brody Looked Hot AF at This Golden Globes After-Party

When two actors who portrayed some of your favorite characters in television history get married IRL, you expect to continue living inside their world. But that has never been the case with Leighton Meester and Adam Brody. In the time since the pair first met in 2010, they've gotten married in a secret ceremony and had a baby girl, Arlo Day, together. They've also remained very reclusive, only appearing at public events every once in a while.

But last night, Leighton and Adam surprised us all by attending the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes after-party—and there's a super-chic pic to prove it.

How gorgeous do they look? Ugh, give. us. more.

Us Weekly reports that Blake Lively and hubby Ryan Reynolds were at the same shindig, but there are no confirmed reports that B and S had any interaction.

We see you, Target. Ever expanding its beauty section, the store is kicking off 2017 by bringing a special collection of South Korean beauty and skin care products curated by Peach & Lily creator, Alicia Yoon. Target isn't the first major chain to introduce a Korean section; Ulta and Sephora have already launched wildly successful K-Beauty collections, but nevertheless, we're excited the brand is expanding its horizons. Just a few years ago, hardly anyone knew about K-Beauty—now, thanks to Yoon and others like her, the beauty world is becoming a lot smaller (in a good way)!

Along with toners, lipsticks, and even snail-mucus eye cream, some of the products you can expect to see soon are:

Caolion Pore Glowing Moisture Stick ($16.00 at Target)

Mizon Soothing Mask ($3.50 at Target)

The collection is set to launch online and in select stores January 22.

Women Ruled the Golden Globes This Year

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards was a victory night for women. Not only did the ladies take home numerous awards, but there were many unforgettable moments last night that completely changed the game for women everywhere. We just can't get over how inspiring these ladies actually are. Take a look at the most memorable girl power moments from last night:

Meryl Streep won the prestigious Cecil B. Demille Award

Meryl Streep is a QUEEN. Last night during the Golden Globes, Meryl delivered a speech that left everyone speechless. The internet went crazy, stars applauded her amazing words and viewers were shown how much of a wonderful woman she is. "We have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight," she said in closing. "As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, take your broken heart, make it into art."

Viola Davis's speech

We all were brought to tears with Viola Davis's introduction for Meryl Streep. She described Streep as an "artist which makes us feel less alone." Crediting her as a successful and inspiring actress, Viola had nothing but the kindest words for her friend. We're pretty sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

"You make me proud to be an artist. You make me feel that what I have in me—my body, my face, my age—is enough," she said. "You encapsulate that great Emile Zola quote that if you ask me as an artist what I came into this world to do, I as an artist would say, I came to live out loud."

Emma Stone, "Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy"

If you haven't seen La La Land then you need to go ASAP so you can see the gorgeous and talented Emma Stone completely slay the musical. Last night, she was awarded "Best Actress in a Musical Comedy" for her role. Amazing job Emma! We can't wait to see all of the things you continue to accomplish in your career.

Sarah Paulson, "Best Actress in a Limited Series"

American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson killed it on the red carpet and at the awards show last night. Because of her work as prosecuter Marsha Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Sarah won the award for "Best Actress in a Limited Series." Yes, yes, yes!

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Tribute

We cried so many tears over this. During the show, host Jimmy Fallon introduced a special video tribute to late mother-daughter actresses Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. In his introduction, Jimmy pointed out that with this loss, we've all lost family. We sure did, Jimmy. These two ladies will always be remembered for their talent and love.

"Sometimes we forget it's actually a community. A community of families," he said. "This past year, we lost so many legends and icons. But a few weeks ago, we lost a mother and a daughter within just a couple of days. It was a terrible loss that we all felt. Tonight, we would like to pay tribute to Carrie fisher and Debbie Reynolds."

Tracee Ellis Ross's Speech

First black woman to win "Best Actress in a Comedy" since 1983? Um, yes! Her empowering speech had us feeling all the feels.

"This is for all the women, women of color, and colorful people," she declared. "Whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. But I want you to know that I see you; we see you. It is an honor to be on this show, Black-ish. To continue expanding the way we are seen and known. And to show the magic and the beauty and the sameness of a story and stories that are outside of where the industry usually looks."

The Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooter Has Been Charged & May Face the Death Penalty

Esteban Santiago, 26, the suspect taken into custody by authorities following the fatal Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting on Friday, had his first court hearing on Monday after being charged with committing an act of violence at an airport. He is possibly facing the death penalty for his brutal attack.

Santiago also faces charges for using a firearm in a crime of violence and causing death with a firearm, the Huffington Post reports.

According to The Guardian, authorities interviewed roughly 175 people after the attack, including Santiago, an Iraq war veteran from Alaska. Santiago admitted to planning the attack and then buying a one-way ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport with the purpose of carrying it out. The attack killed five people and left eight injured.

Authorities are still searching for a motive and are looking at terrorism as a possibility. However, it is still unclear why Santiago chose to carry out his attack in Fort Lauderdale when he has no evident connection to South Florida, Fox News reports.

According to his relatives, Santiago has a history of mental health problems and was receiving treatment for them in his home state of Alaska. Those close to Santiago, including his mother, Elizabeth Santiago, say that the war veteran’s mind wasn't right when he came home from Iraq. Elizabeth told the Daily Mail that her son is mentally ill, not evil, and that she is pleading with authorities for her son’s life.

“Esteban served to protect this country. He has mental health problems and he should receive the proper treatment. The death penalty isn’t the right solution to his problems,” Elizabeth, 56, told the Daily Mail.

Santiago’s aunt, Maria Ruiz Rivera, spoke similarly about her nephew. According to the Guardian, Rivera said Santiago “had visions all the time” and “seemed normal at times but other times he seemed lost.”

This isn’t the first time the authorities are hearing about Santiago’s mental health problems. In November, Santiago told agents at an FBI field office that he thought the government was using mind control and that he was being chased and controlled by the CIA, CBS News reports. After being evaluated for four days, the FBI decided not to follow up on Santiago’s paranoid thoughts and released him.

“The FBI failed there. We’re not talking about someone who emerged from anonymity to do something like this,” Santiago’s brother, Bryan Santiago, told the Associated Press.

Santiago’s trial is only just beginning, and has a ways to go before the Justice Departments decides whether or not to pursue the death penalty. If Santiago decides to plead insanity, he has a long uphill battle ahead of him.

9 Common Study Abroad Mistakes & What To Do Instead

$

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to study abroad in college, take it. From traveling across Europe to exploring the “land down under,” there are so many adventures to be had around the world. And what better time to immerse yourself in different cultures than college? You’re already expanding your knowledge and learning more about you who are, studying abroad will help you to do this in an even more unique way.

We spoke with a variety of collegiettes about their study abroad experiences, but more importantly, their mistakes. They shared their insights about certain mistakes they made as well as advice on what to do instead. Basically, they told us what you can do to make your time abroad even better!

1. Not taking the time to do things on your own

Traveling alone can be intimidating. New people, new faces and little knowledge about where you are is a turnoff for many collegiettes. Alanna O’Connell, a senior at Marist College, shares why she believes it’s important to venture out of your comfort zone to truly immerse yourself in new things.

“As fun as it is to do everything with friends, it’s also nice to take time to do things on your own,” she says. “Go on a run at the city’s riverside, visit a museum, walk to that hidden sandwich shop you once saw. Doing things like this alone gives you a new appreciation for the country you’re living in and time to reflect on your adventure. At the end of the day, this is your time abroad, so do what you want when you want!”

Who doesn’t want to be an independent woman? As long as you’re safe in your explorations, don’t be afraid to try new things alone!

2. Overpacking

This is something most ladies can relate to, on any trip we take. It’s easy to think you’ll need every cute clothing item you own, but in reality you should focus on the necessities. Alysson Aquaviva, a senior at Southern New Hampshire University, made this mistake her first time abroad. “For some reason I thought I would need ten clubbing dresses and one pair of jeans and no winter jacket," she says. "I also thought bringing two pairs of four-inch heels to a cobblestone city was smart. Let’s just say those lasted one night only. Also, I didn’t save any space for when I was coming home so I spent about two days trying to figure out how to stuff things accumulated over four months into two suitcases.”

One of the worst things is having to leave behind some of your belongings because they won’t fit in your suitcase. This is where owning a lot of basics can come in handy. You can pack the essentials and spend your money on fun accessories abroad, which take up less room and keep you looking stylish.

3. Not keeping a journal

Journaling, or even blogging, is a great way to help you remember specifics about your trips. While abroad you’ll usually travel to other cities or even countries. You do so much that it becomes a blur, but keeping a journal can help you revisit special moments.

“I really wish I put in the effort to even jot down some of my feelings and experiences that I had,” Alysson says. “Being able to look back at a certain day and remember how I was feeling or what was going on at that time would have been nice.” Alysson suggests taking a lot of photos if you’re not one who enjoys writing. “I will always be able to cherish them,” she says.

We say do both! Start a blog or write in a journal, but definitely take lots of pictures! These are all great ways to revisit certain memories years later.

4. Not exploring your host city

No matter where you study, it’s important to take the time to get to know the area you’re living in. Many people get wrapped up in the idea of travel, which is wonderful, but if you have the opportunity to learn more about your host city, don’t pass it up. Alysson shares her regrets from studying abroad her first time around.

“Not taking the opportunity to appreciate and explore my surroundings as much was a very big mistake,” she says. “As amazing as it was to travel around to nine other countries during my stay, I feel as if I did not have the chance to really get to know the area that I lived in.” This resulted in not making as many connections with locals or fully indulging in the food and social culture of that area.

It’s easy to get swept up in the thought of travel, but it can be even more rewarding to truly get to know the area you’re living in. Plus, you can always return to explore different places another time!

5. Not doing research on the places you visit

Spontaneous travel is no doubt exciting, but sometimes researching places before you go to them will allow you to fully make the most of it. Juliet Goulet, a senior at Bishop's University, talks about wishing she knew more about events before they happened.

“Partying is fun, and I spent a lot of my time doing it, but I missed out on so many things because I didn’t spend the time to research them. Every so often I would stumble on something, like a Christmas market, and be wowed by the intricacy, quality and atmosphere. And I would want more, and curse my terrible luck that I didn’t know about them sooner.”

Although there is always plenty to do and partying abroad seems to be a must, researching ahead of time might help you discover more culturally rich things to do or places to visit.

Doing research can also save you money. Erin Lovett, a senior at Lasell College, says, "A lot of people don't check all of their options when it comes to booking flights and hostels. I have learned that it is best to do your research and look through all of your options. Whether this means taking a bus instead of a plane or staying in a hostel a little outside of the city to save money, it's worth it." Be sure to take the extra time to compare prices and find the best options for your journeys before you finalize your plans.

6. Saying no

Similar to exploring alone, trying new things can be nerve racking. This usually leads to you saying “no” due to the fear of going out of your comfort zone. Juliet shares why you have to give yourself the chance to try new things, even if your natural instinct is to say no.

“Whether it’s trying food you’ve never eaten before, hanging out with classmates you don’t know very well yet or taking an impromptu trip across the country, you should be able to finish your exchange experience with a long list of things that you said 'yes' to,” she says.

“On the very first night I met my new roommates, one of them had the idea to go to a pub. I was tired, jet-lagged and hadn’t even unpacked yet, but found myself ordering a 1£ beer and having one of the best nights of my four months there.”

Her memorable night never would've happened if she had said no. Don’t be scared to try new things and branch out to meet new people. Clearly, it can be very rewarding.

7. Not bringing enough money

It’s no secret that traveling can be expensive. Being a full-time college student doesn’t make this any easier, either. Making sure to go abroad with a budgeted amount of money is important because it will allow you to do more things.

“I worked two jobs the summer before I left and made enough money for my semester abroad that I literally lived like a Florentine princess,” Maria Rago, a senior at Emmanuel College says. “I shopped. I went on trips almost every weekend and I never said no, unlike some of my friends. There is no 'next time' so take advantage of the trip you’re on. Get lost, make friends, cry happy tears, but never turn something down because of money.” We love this mindset, but realize every situation is different. Don’t be afraid to budget for the more important things you want but never turn down the chance to indulge. You’re only abroad once, so enjoy yourself!

8. Over-planning

There is a definite comfort that comes with plans. You know what to expect and this can be necessary in some cases, but what’s the fun in that?

Juliet, a planner herself, tells why she wishes she was a tad more spontaneous during her time abroad. “You never know the adventures you can have when you just decide to go. Instead of worrying about sticking to a plan you get to enjoy the world around you,” she says. “Once, I was taken on a surprise trip to Bath. I knew nothing about the trip, which albeit scary was also exhilarating. It was the most spontaneous thing I did that semester, and I loved every minute of the adventure.”

Spontaneity always seems to lead to the best stories. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

9. Getting hung up on the things you didn’t get to do

The sad thing about studying abroad is that it usually only lasts for a semester. This means your time is limited, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If anything, it makes your time more valuable so you can truly focus on the things you want to do. Juliet shares why you shouldn’t dwell on the things you missed.

“You’ll never have the chance to do everything," she says. "You’re only one person in a big foreign country, and you’d need an entire lifetime to experience everything. You should leave your time abroad thinking of all the positive experiences you had, not stuck on the things you never did.”

This thought is true in all aspects of life. Why focus on the negatives or dwell on the things you missed when there is so much else to smile about? Realize your time is precious and plan your adventures abroad accordingly.

No matter where you go or who you travel with, keeping a positive mindset and an open heart is a must. Trying things out of your comfort zone can help you discover a lot about who you are, or better yet, who you want to be. Be sure to take time to explore safely on your own and never turn down an opportunity to be adventurous. This world has a lot to offer, and hopefully with these tips you will make the most of your travels!

Men Don't Want to Do Women's Work, Even if it Means They Don't Work At All

It’s time to face the facts from recent studies about men in the "pink-collar" workforce—most importantly, that men don't want to enter primarily female fields, according to The New York Times, even if they could earn more and have more job security.

Caregivers, therapists and nurse practitioners are on the up-and-up according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. These fields are some of the fastest growing pink-collar jobs, each boasting female populations of over 80 percent. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the greatest decline in two male-dominated occupations come 2024—locomotive firers and vehicle electronics installers and repairers. Each of these jobs are expected to shrink by at least 50 percent.

Pink seems to be replacing blue, and not everyone is happy about it. Tracy Dawson, a 53-year-old unemployed welder, told the Times, “I ain’t gonna be a nurse; I don’t have the tolerance for people.” On the topic of gender, he says, “I’ve always seen a woman in the position of a nurse or some kind of health care worker. I see it as more of a woman’s touch.” Dawson's living on disability insurance for rheumatoid arthritis.

What exactly is the basis for these views that men don't belong in women's work, and vice-versa? Well, let’s refer to a poster campaign established in the early 2000s that served to recruit men to the nursing field. The “Are You Man Enough?” campaign. Cue the eye rolls.

This poster, and another one that compares nursing with the adrenaline rush of mountain climbing, provide a source of comic relief. They're just so ridiculously gendered. Aren't we supposed to be past all that by now? But as the numbers show, we're not. Men still really don't want to work in fields they see as being dominated by women, even though, according to the Times, men in female-dominated fields end up getting promoted faster—the "glass elevator" at work. Dudes would rather be unemployed than work in a 'womanly' field where they'll literally get an easy ride to the top.

The specter of gender is ever present, even when it comes to women working high-powered jobs. While it seems like we've made a ton of progress in that department, stigma and stereotypes still linger. In recent interviews with candidates for the White House’s Cabinet positions, Trump campaign leader Kellyanne Conway raised her concerns about being a mother and working in the White House, and said she tries to get male applicants to put themselves in a woman's role. She said, “I do politely mention to them that the question isn’t ‘Would you take the job?’—the male sitting across from me who’s about to take a big role in the White House—but ‘Would you want your wife to?’ And you really see their entire visage change.”

It’s not a matter of can women assume these high-powered roles. It’s a matter of have they? Hillary Clinton talked a great deal in her presidential campaign about breaking the glass ceiling and establishing a place for women in society on the biggest male-dominated stage. With Trump’s ultimate triumph, it's hard not to wonder if the preservation of the glass ceiling means another four years of snowboarding nurses seeking an adrenaline rush.

But with “female” occupations on the rise, you boys better watch out—we’re looking at a little bit of pink on those collars of yours.

Forget the mom of the friend group. Sometimes you find yourself acting like the actual mom of your siblings. Driving them around? Teaching them how to do life? Critiquing their manners? It's a big task, but someone's got to be the big sister/mom. These are 26 signs your siblings have actually become your children.

1. You drive them everywhere.

In a minivan, of course.

2. You try to give them advice they don't want.

Listen, bud…

3. You tell them the honest truth about life.

Even if they don't want to hear it.

4. You told them not to do something, and they did it anyway.

Don't. Touch. The. Boat.

5. You somehow end up cleaning their messes.

Why did you do this?

6. You're always on hair duty.

Homecoming, anyone?

7. You correct their bad habits.

Don't bite your nails!

8. You have the honor of teaching them about fashion.

Put that away!

9. And you teach your little bros about women.

Let's talk about how to be a gentleman and treat your girlfriend like Beyoncé.

10. You're basically a glorified (unpaid) babysitter.

It's worth it though.

11. But you feel super proud when you watch their recitals and see their report cards.

*sheds a tear*

12. Your siblings ask you really weird questions.

Do I have to answer this?

13. Let's face it, you're like a soccer mom.

14. You help them with their math homework…

If you can even remember how to do algebra.

15. …and then with college applications.

Because parents are useless.

16. You find yourself being the comforter more often than the comfortee.

But nothing is better than a sibling hug.

17. You try to impress your siblings' friends.

It's hard to top the lives of 14-year-olds nowadays, though.

18. Your siblings embarrass you in public.

After all, you trained these kids.

19. You relate more to Lorelai than Rory.

20. This is your life motto:

21. You didn't cause mischief together.

You're not as close as Monica and Ross, apparently.

22. Sometimes you're a little too critical of them…

This is when you go into full mom mode.

23. …and get disappointed when they let you down.

How could they do this?!

24. You actually GOT the jokes in Bad Moms

Can this be me?!

25. You also need a break from your siblings once in a while.

A girl can dream.

26. But you love them like they're your own kids.
