Stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie… mmm. Thanksgiving is a wonderful, delicious holiday. Unfortunately, your favorite festive meal can pack a ton of calories, fat and sugar. But never fear! We’ve compiled eight healthy recipes that may become your new Thanksgiving favorites. With vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, you’re sure to find something tasty and good for you.

1. Deep Dish Apple Pie

Recipe from Eating Well

Most piecrusts are chock-full of calories, mostly from shortening and butter. This recipe uses whole-wheat flour for a kick of fiber and replaces some of the butter with canola oil to cut back on saturated fat. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • 1 1/4 cups whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 4 tablespoons ice water

Filling:

  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled McIntosh apples (about 2 pounds)
  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled Granny Smith apples (about 2 pounds)
  • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground allspice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg white, lightly beaten, for brushing

Instructions:

To prepare the crust:

  1. Whisk whole-wheat pastry flour, 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl.
  2. Cut butter into small pieces and, with your fingers, quickly rub them into the dry ingredients until the pieces are smaller but still visible.
  3. Add sour cream and oil; toss with a fork to combine with the dry ingredients.
  4. Sprinkle water over the mixture. Toss with a fork until evenly moist.
  5. Knead the dough with your hands in the bowl a few times—the mixture will still be a little crumbly. Turn out onto a clean surface and knead a few more times, until the dough just holds together.
  6. Divide the dough in half and shape into 5-inch-wide disks. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Next, make the filling:

  1. Combine apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and pinch of salt in a large bowl. Reserving 4 cups, transfer the rest of the apple mixture to a Dutch oven.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the apples are tender and beginning to break down, about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat, stir in the reserved apples and 2 tablespoons flour; let cool for about 30 minutes.

To assemble and bake the pie:

  1. Position a rack in lower third of oven; preheat to 425°F.
  2. Remove the dough from the refrigerator; let stand for five minutes to warm slightly.
  3. Roll one portion between sheets of parchment or wax paper into a 13-inch circle.
  4. Peel off the top sheet and invert the dough into a 9 1/2-inch deep-dish pie pan. Peel off the remaining paper. Scrape the filling into the crust.
  5. Roll the remaining portion of dough between sheets of parchment or wax paper into another 13-inch circle. Peel off the top sheet of paper and invert the dough onto the fruit. Peel off the remaining paper.
  6. Trim the crust so it overhangs evenly. Tuck the top crust under the bottom crust, sealing the two together and making a plump edge. Flute the edge with your fingers.
  7. Combine 1 teaspoon granulated sugar and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Brush the crust with egg white and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar.
  8. Cut six steam vents in the top crust.
  9. Bake the pie on the bottom rack for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 375° and continue baking until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, 25 to 35 minutes more.
  10. Let cool on a wire rack for about 1 1/2 hours before serving.

2. Whole Grain Classic Stuffing

Recipe from A Couple Cooks

This healthy spin on stuffing uses whole grain bread, which has more nutrients and fiber than white bread. And by using olive oil instead of butter, you cut back on saturated fat!

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf whole grain bread
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 leeks
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage leaves (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Fresh ground pepper
  • 3 cups vegetable broth

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cut bread into cubes. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 25 minutes, until browned and toasted.
  2. While the bread is toasting, dice 1 onion and 3 stalks celery.
  3. For the leeks, chop off the dark green stems and the root, then slice them in half lengthwise. Place each leek half cut-side down on the cutting board, then chop it into thin slices (resulting in half-moon shapes). There will be dirt in between each layer of the leeks, so when you’ve finished chopping them, rinse them thoroughly in a colander.
  4. Chop the sage leaves and parsley to make 2 tablespoons each.
  5. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add celery, onion and leeks with a few pinches kosher salt; cook six to eight minutes, stirring frequently, until tender. Remove from the heat and stir in the herbs.
  6. Place the bread cubes and vegetables in a bowl, add 1 teaspoon kosher salt and a generous amount of pepper and mix to combine.
  7. Pour into a 9x13 baking dish. Add 3 cups broth. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake for about 25 minutes, until browned.

3. Quinoa Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

Recipe from Leslie Durso

Quinoa is a superfood, packing in important nutrients like fiber and protein. This recipe also uses olive oil instead of butter and butter substitute, which makes this recipe vegan-friendly with no saturated fat.

Ingredients:

  • 4 sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp butter substitute (like Earth Balance)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cups kale, broken into small pieces
  • ½ cup toasted slivered almonds
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Bake the sweet potatoes on baking sheet at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until fork-tender.
  2. Cook the quinoa in the vegetable broth.
  3. Sauté the onion in the butter substitute and olive oil with a pinch of salt until soft.
  4. Add in the kale, almonds and cranberries and sauté until the kale is soft, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add the finished quinoa to the frying pan and mix together.

4. Gingered Pears and Parsnips

Recipe from Food Network

A delicious late-fall side dish, these pears and parsnips are sweet with a kick. With only a little bit of butter but a ton of flavor from the ginger and lemon, no one will be able to tell that these are so low in calories!

Ingredients:

  • 2 quartered Bosc pears
  • 3 sliced parsnips
  • ½ cup white wine
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • A few slices of ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Pinch of sugar
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Combine Bosc pears and sliced parsnips in a skillet with 1/2 cup each white wine and chicken broth, 2 tablespoons butter, the juice of 1 lemon, a few slices ginger, 1 bay leaf and a pinch each of sugar and red pepper flakes.
  2. Partially cover and boil until the liquid evaporates and the pears brown, about 20 minutes.
  3. Stir in a splash of water.

5. Vegan and Gluten-free Pumpkin Bread

Recipe from The Detoxinista

This bread, perfect for your vegan or gluten-free guests, is sure to please every diet: buckwheat flour adds protein to this dessert, and coconut oil is a great source of healthy fat. Can’t get enough pumpkin? Check out these seven healthy pumpkin recipes for fall!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ cup coconut oil, melted
  • 6 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a standard loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the buckwheat flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking soda, then stir in the pumpkin puree, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla and water.
  3. Finally, add in the apple cider vinegar, which will help the loaf rise when it reacts with the baking soda.
  4. Transfer the batter to the lined loaf pan, and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake at 350 degrees F for 50-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow to cool completely before slicing and serving.

6. Herb-Roasted Turkey Breast

Recipe from Food Network

Turkey, the quintessential Thanksgiving entrée, gets a healthier spin with this flavorful recipe. The dry mustard and herbs provide a mouthwatering flavor. Even dark-meat lovers are sure to love this lighter turkey breast!

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole bone-in turkey breast, 6 1/2 to 7 pounds
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage leaves
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup dry white wine

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the turkey breast skin side up on a rack in a roasting pan.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, mustard, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon juice to make a paste. Loosen the skin from the meat gently with your fingers and smear half of the paste directly on the meat. Spread the remaining paste evenly on the skin. Pour the wine into the bottom of the roasting pan.
  3. Roast the turkey for 1 3/4 to 2 hours, until the skin is golden brown and an instant-read thermometer registers 165 degrees F when inserted into the thickest and meatiest areas of the breast. If the skin is over-browning, cover the breast loosely with aluminum foil. When the turkey is done, cover with foil and allow it to rest at room temperature for 15 minutes. Slice and serve with the pan juices spooned over the turkey.

7. Spicy Parmesan Green Beans and Kale

Recipe from Food Network

Kale, a celebrity of the health foods world, gets paired with mushrooms and green beans for a healthy, spicy side dish that goes perfectly with whole grain stuffing. Simply omitting the Parmesan makes this side vegan-friendly as well.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1/4 pound cremini mushrooms, trimmed and quartered (about 14 mushrooms)
  • 1 1/2 pounds green beans, trimmed and slice into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 bunch kale (1/2 pound), rinsed, stemmed and roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 1/2 a lemon)
  • 3 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan

Instructions:

  1. Warm the olive oil in a large, heavy sauté pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the onions and cook until translucent, about four minutes.
  3. Add the mushrooms, green beans, salt and pepper and cook for two minutes.
  4. Add the wine and continue cooking until the green beans are almost tender, about five minutes.
  5. Add the red pepper flakes and the kale and continue cooking until the kale has wilted, about four to five minutes.
  6. Add the lemon juice and the Parmesan cheese. Toss to coat and serve immediately.

8. Cranberry Cherry Relish

Recipe from Elana’s Pantry

Your traditional cranberry sauce (especially if it comes from a can) is likely full of sugar—but this relish is sweetened with stevia plant extract and orange juice. Paired with cherries, this relish is a fresh spin on your favorite sweet side dish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 8-oz package fresh cranberries
  • 1 10-oz package frozen cherries
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 10 drops liquid stevia

Instructions:

  1. Place cranberries, cherries, orange juice and stevia in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat.
  3. Simmer about 20 minutes, until berries have burst and sauce has thickened.
  4. Transfer to a bowl and serve.

With these delicious, healthier takes on classic Thanksgiving dishes, you can have your pie and eat it too—without compromising taste!

Man Calls Starbucks Barista 'Trash' After Claiming He Was Discriminated Against for Being a White Trump Supporter

The toxicity of this election cycle reared its ugly head again in a Miami Starbucks last week when, according to the Miami News Times, David Sanguesa claimed that he was denied service on Thursday afternoon because he supported Trump.

Sanguesa then started yelling at the Starbucks employee, a black woman. Sanguesa called her “trash” and “garbage,” yelling “I voted for Trump! Trump! You lost, now give me my money back.” The employee denied that she had refused service to Sanguesa. Others said that Sanguesa just got mad because he had to wait for his drink.

Sanguesa also screamed at and threatened to punch customers at the store who tried to step in during the confrontation.

Another customer in the Starbucks, Jorge de Cárdenas, recorded most of the exchange on video and posted it to Twitter.

The Miami Herald reports that Sanguesa has been charged with two DUIs and domestic violence, and has been sending emails to the paper “with rants against Cubans, women, immigrants, gays and lesbians, President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton,” for years prior to last week’s confrontation.

When the Herald talked to Sanguesa about the Starbucks incident, he said he had apologized for what he said to the barista, but continued to assert that he'd been discriminated against. He said he was thinking of suing Starbucks.

Starbucks released a statement to The Washington Post in response to the incident, saying, “embracing diversity and treating each other with respect and dignity is core to Starbucks values and something our partners take great pride in showing. We are committed to providing an inclusive, supportive and safe work environment for everyone."

Many Trump supporters seem to have taken issue with Starbucks lately—several have tried to make a "statement" by ordering their drinks under the name "Trump," allegedly just to see if the barista will say it. The #TrumpCup phenomenon has been referred to as a boycott, but since it involves people giving their money to Starbucks, it doesn't really fit that definition.

Melania & Barron Trump Won't Move to the White House Right Away

Only two First Ladies in United States history have not lived in the White House during their husbands’ presidencies, according to the BBC. And they both had really good excuses: the White House wasn't even built yet when Martha Washington was FLOTUS, and William Henry Harrison's wife, Anna Harrison, hadn't yet moved in when her husband died a month into his term. There are no extenuating circumstances like that for Melania Trump, but she's still planning to be the third FLOTUS not to reside in the White House. President-elect Donald Trump has stated that she and their 10-year-old son Barron will stay in New York so that he can finish the school year at home.

Transition spokesman Jason Miller said that the Trump family was “energized and excited about their new role serving the country,” even though they would be separated, according to CNN.

Melania Trump, who was regularly absent from the campaign trail in order to stay home with her son, has said that her chosen cause as FLOTUS will be helping to stop cyber-bullying. First Ladies’ causes, such as Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move and Let Girls Learn campaigns, aren't required as part of the role. The only official duty of the First Lady is to host functions taking place at the White House.

So who will be filling the role of White House Hostess while Mrs. Trump is still living in New York? Some think Trump's oldest daughter Ivanka, who played a big role in her dad's campaign, may be more of a First Lady than Melania, according to the BBC. Ivanka has said that she wants to focus on her business while her father is in office, but it's hard to believe that statement whe she's already attended a meeting between Trump and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Many presidents have had young First Children—including Chelsea Clinton, who was 12 when her father was elected, and Malia and Sasha Obama, who were 10 and seven when President Obama was elected in 2008—and they've all lived in the White House from day one of their parents' presidencies. While life as a president's kid is never normal, Chelsea described some pretty normal traditions, like eating dinner as a family every night, when she lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Four Police Officers Were Attacked In Separate Shootings On One Day

In a tragic turn of events on Sunday, four police officers were shot in separate incidents that don't appear to be related. One officer was killed in San Antonio, according to NPR, while the other three were injured St. Louis, Sanibel, Fla. and Gladstone, Mo. The officer from St. Louis remains in critical condition.

Detective Benjamin Marconi, 50, was shot in the head and killed while in his patrol car writing a ticket after traffic stop. Police are still searching for his killer, and have released photos of the suspect and his car on Facebook. The Sanibel police officer was also shot during a traffic stop, according to USA Today. The suspect in that case is in custody. The Gladstone officer was shot during a struggle after a traffic stop, and the suspect was later shot and killed, according to the Kansas City Star.

In the St. Louis officer's case, the Associated Press reports that he was shot twice in the face while sitting in his patrol car, when another car pulled up alongside him and shot through the window. Though he is in critical condition, the sergeant is expected to survive. The suspect, who was already wanted on multiple accounts by police, was later killed in a shootout with police.

NPR reports that San Antonio and St. Louis shootings were likely targed attacks on police, while the Sanibel and Gladstone shootings may not have been. The Officer Down Memorial Page reports that 127 police officers have died in the line of duty in 2016, with 58 of those deaths attributable to gunfire. Last year, the page reported 130 deaths, with 39 from gunfire.

If you've seen Drake's new Apple Music commercial, you know he bumps some T. Swift while working out. (If you haven't, watch below. You won't regret it.)

As if that wasn't enough to get us talking, Drake Instagrammed the video with the hashtag #Draylor after the AMAs last night. Excuse me?!

Whether Drake is being serious or not, we can't be sure. But the #Draylor hashtag has fans everywhere freaking out—and for good reason! There have been rumors galore about the two, whether it be a relationship or a musical collaboration.

Is this just a stunt to stir people up (and get them watching the commercial)? Or is Draylor actually a thing? We need more, you guys.

Jared Kushner Probably Got Into Harvard Because His Dad Donated $2.5 Million

$
0
0

The journey of Ivanka Trump's husband, and therefore President-elect Donald Trump's son-in-law, to Harvard University is a little suspicious. Jared Kushner, who may end up working in the White House for his father-in-law, seems to have gotten into Harvard thanks to a small $2.5 million gift his father donated to the school just a few years before his son gained admission.

This isn't a new revelation. In 2006, ProPublica editor Daniel Golden wrote a book called The Price of Admission about how rich people can basically pay to get their kids into elite schools. One of the case studies? Jared Kushner—who now, 10 years later, may end up being one of the most powerful figures in the Trump administration.

Golden reports that administrators at Kushner's high school didn't think he should have gotten in to Harvard.

“There was no way anybody in the administrative office of the school thought he would on the merits get into Harvard,” a former official at the Frisch School in Paramus, N.J. told Golden. “His GPA did not warrant it, his SAT scores did not warrant it. We thought for sure, there was no way this was going to happen. Then, lo and behold, Jared was accepted. It was a little bit disappointing because there were at the time other kids we thought should really get in on the merits, and they did not.”

Of course, Kushner's people denied to ProPublica that money had anything to do with his admission to the best university in the U.S. But in his research, Golden discovered that Kushner's parents were both on a list of major Harvard donors, of which over half had sent children to the university. This high admission rate for a certain population (Harvard admitted only one out of nine regular applicants 10 years ago) gave the impression that Harvard gave preferential treatment to the children of people who donated a lot of money. And Charles Kushner, Jared's father, didn't attend Harvard himself, meaning he wasn't donating millions of dollars just because he loved the college so much. Jared's brother Josh, who's dated Karlie Kloss for four years, also went to Harvard.

It may not be surprising that money can pave the way to acceptance at Harvard. But the way Jared Kushner has used his family, money and connections to potentially secure a powerful top spot in a presidential administration is a stark reminder that we are nowhere near the meritocracy many would like America to be.

7 Things You Should Do Over Thanksgiving Break to Make Exam Week Easier

$
0
0

After fall break, Thanksgiving break is usually the nearest light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not quite the end of the semester, but it’s just close enough to keep you sane when you’re pulling your tenth all-nighter of the semester. Typically, Thanksgiving break involves a lot of time remembering how much you love home-cooked meals and forgetting about how much you are dreading the return to the land of lectures and worse, final exams. Although finals week is a narrative we would very much like to be excluded from, it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. If you take exam week one step at a time, it will be much more manageable than if you attempt to cram a semester’s worth of knowledge the night before. So while we would all rather be preparing Thanksgiving dinner than preparing for finals, try these seven tips to save yourself a whole lot of stress come exam week.

1. Use your travel time wisely

Whether you live ten minutes from campus or ten hours, there is probably at least a little bit of travel time required to get you back home for Thanksgiving. A drive where you are riding passenger seat or a long flight is the perfect opportunity to get started on some exam week material. You can make flash cards for your most difficult class, create a study guide or even just catch up on some reading that you “forgot” (skipped) on the syllabus. You don’t have to spend your entire three-hour flight memorizing flashcards, but if you’re so bored that you’re contemplating reading the in-flight magazine, it might not be such a bad alternative.

“I live in Delaware and my flights are usually three to four hours long,” says Kerry Moore, a junior at the University of South Carolina. “Freshman year, I would just listen to my music and fall asleep for the entire ride but because I was taking harder classes sophomore year I decided to study on the plane. It was one of the best things I could have done to prepare for finals. I didn’t have to miss out on time with my family once I got home, but I still got a great head start.”

And chances are that you will be making the trip a second time to get back to campus (unless of course you’ve somehow managed to convince your parents that you don’t need to take finals). This offers another opportunity to get something done which just might save you an all-night study session or two.

2. Ask your relatives to help you out

It’s great catching up with relatives during the break, but you can only talk for so long before they start in on the relationship questions – cue your exam prep! Your relatives will be so impressed by your dedication to your schoolwork that they won’t even remember that they asked about your love life (or lack thereof).

"Getting a little bit of study time in during Thanksgiving Break isn't hard—especially if you have a large family," says Kaia Thompson, a junior at Ball State University. "Usually, out of everyone at my house I can at least find one person who will quiz me. It's nice because sometimes the material will spark a conversation and then I get some good study time and family time in over the break."

Whether it’s having an aunt quiz you with your flashcards or an older sibling help you out with a study guide, it’s never a bad idea to ask for help, especially when you have so many potential study partners right at your fingertips.

3. Plan out your finals week schedule

If actually committing to getting work done over break seems too overwhelming, try visualizing what your ideal exam week would look like. We don’t mean dropping the 8 a.m. lecture that you hate, but rather mapping out a study schedule that works for you. If you don’t know what dates your finals exams are on or you just don’t have any idea how you are going to dedicate the necessary time to each class, this is your time to develop a game plan. Other important aspects to consider include how much of the course’s overall grade depends on the final, and the material that the exam will actually cover. Believe us, planning everything out is half of the battle.

“I am a huge planner,” says Annie Nguyen, a junior at Indiana University–Purdue University of Indianapolis. “I love to plan everything—except for when it comes to schoolwork. I was never able to make myself sit down and figure out a final exam schedule until last semester. I found an app that made it quick and easy to make a study schedule. It really helps me maintain my focus, especially during finals week.”

Websites like GoConqr are great tools to start figuring out how to tackle exam week.

4. Brainstorm final project ideas

While final projects are often preferred over final exams, getting prepared for them can be just as difficult. First, you have to come up with a topic or idea (which sometimes takes half a semester by itself), then you have to figure out when you can work on it and it’s just all a bit much to handle when you have a million other things going on at the end of the semester. Now we aren’t saying that you can’t come up with a project if you procrastinate and do it at the last minute, we are just saying that it might not be very enjoyable for you.

"Even if you don't end up using or sticking to it, having a plan to fall back on will kind of clear your head and help you avoid that initial time procrastinating," says Margeaux Biché, a junior at Barnard College.

Brainstorming ideas over the break gives you plenty of time to figure out exactly what you want to do and how to execute it.

5. Set aside some time each day for prep time

While it’s definitely a good idea to get a start on exam week as soon as possible, Thanksgiving break is still that—a break. It’s not necessary to lock yourself away to study and only come out to make sure you get at least a slice of your favorite Thanksgiving dessert. Make sure that you take time for yourself and enjoy all the food and family that the holiday has to offer, but also set aside a little bit of time each day to set yourself up for success for finals. Even if it’s just half an hour a day, that time will add up. Remember—quality over quantity.

“I wouldn’t want to spend my whole Thanksgiving break studying, but cutting study sessions into bits and pieces makes it more manageable,” says Thompson. “It definitely pays off because I don’t have to stress as much when I get to my exams which is nice.”

Even if you’re just looking up topics for a final speech or editing a paper, you will thank yourself when you are the only one in your friend group not freaking out during exam week.

6. Complete any study guides

If your professor gives you a study guide for the final exam, it isn't because they want to ruin your life. In fact, it's actually a blessing in diguise. It makes studying and reviewing the material so much easier because you don't have to guess about the material that is going to be on your exam. Thanksgiving break is an ideal time to complete, or at least get a start on, any and all study guides. It's early enough that you won't be frantic if you don't know big pieces of information, but it's close enough to exam time that you have a very good chance of remembering the information for your final.

"One of the first things that I do when I have down time over Thanksgiving break is either make my own study guides or start on study guides that I've been given by professors," says Amanda Hurt, a junior at the University of South Carolina. "It's not the most fun way to spend time over a break, but I feel very accomplished when I finish and more confident about taking on finals week."

Working on study guides in bits and pieces will make them more manageable and you'll be done before you know it!

7. Find and organize your notes

Getting your notes together might seem like a no-brainer during finals week, but it's actually a fairly easy task that you can get started on even earlier. On the off-chance that you didn't keep your notes in perfect order over the course of the semester (okay, this is a very likely chance), this short break is the perfect time to reunite the notes in your notebook with the ones stuffed at the bottom of your bag. In addition to finding your notes, it might be a good idea to find any quizzes, handouts, homework sheets, etc. that would be helpful when studying for your final. Once you find everything, you'll need to figure out the best way to keep it all together—whether it be a folder, a binder or even just a paperclip so your hard work doesn't go to waste. If you're feeling extra ambitious, you can even go through and start higlighting and making note of things that you definitely want to study.

"I like to go through my notes and highlight them or make outlines whenever I'm preparing," says Margeaux. "It might seem like Thanksgiving break is too early to really get into finals study mode, but at least if you do this you will have already started your review and the stuff you've learned since the beginning of the semester will be in the back of your mind when you revisit it in the immediate lead-up to your finals."

When finals week comes around, you're going to be thankful that you don't have to waste a much needed hour or two trying to find your notes.

It might not be easy to swallow the idea of using up some of your well-deserved break for school, but in the long-run (i.e. finals week) you will be glad that you did. Hopefully, these tips will allow you to study and plan rather than cry and cram.

People Need to Give Zayn a Break for His AMA Speech

By Sydney Wess

When Zayn Malik took the stage to receive his AMA award for the best new artist of the year Sunday night, his acceptance speech got One Direction fans across the world talking. Not in a good way.

The first words Zayn spoke after receiving the award were, "Wow. This just has my name on it, right?" Of course, Zayn was joking about his split from One Direction. Clearly out of tune with the rest of the world and thinking the comment was humorous, I let out a quiet chuckle from the comfort of my dorm room when he made the joke.

Apparently no one else saw the light-hearted humor in his jab. Zayn has already received a lot of criticism from the media about his comments. My friends who are self-proclaimed "Directioners” have been calling Zayn petty and inconsiderate for making fun of something “amazing that he killed” when he was supposed to be in a humble position of thanks. Even the audience at the AMAs did not laugh with him, but instead fell silent after his comment, either not catching the joke or thinking he was a total jerk for saying what he did.

I may be a part of the minority, but I don’t think Zayn deserves any of this criticism for his comments. His solo work is completely separate from his work with 1D and represents a new season in his life and in the lives of One Direction’s other members. His comment emphasized how differentiating himself from the boy band was a challenge, as one would assume, considering he broke off from one of the biggest, most successful groups of all time. Zayn presented his thoughts in a quick and light-hearted way. He didn’t spend unnecessary time dwelling on his struggle to be a solo artist. He mentioned it quickly, and gracefully moved on. Though he did come off a little petty in making it the first thing he said in his acceptance speech, I don’t think that his comment was entirely inappropriate.

Much of the criticism towards Zayn is rooted in anger from those who believe that he is the reason One Direction went on hiatus and will most likely split up for good. This anger doesn’t seem fair to me. As an artist, he should have direct reign over his life and how he chooses to create music. Even after just a few months on hiatus, 1D’s other members have already started exploring their potential solo careers. For starters, Harry Stylescommitted to acting in an action movie, Liam Payne is working on solo music, Louis Tomlinson is raising his baby son and Niall just released a single.

It’s understandable that a die-hard 1D fan would look at this situation and blame Zayn for starting what looks like a breakup. It makes even more sense that fans would lash out at Zayn when he makes light of doing so. However, I don’t think Zayn had bad intensions when making the comments; he was just proud of being able to succeed for himself, something we can all empathize with. His feelings just ended up manifesting into what he thought would be a light joke about his past.

Instead of perpetuating disgust due to his misunderstood comments, we should be congratulating Zayn on succeeding on his own and growing as an artist. And, if the other members of 1D want to go solo as well, we should accept that and understand the importance of an artist’s growth and the artist’s power to make his own decisions about how to grow.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that DEAN WAS ACTUALLY THE WORST. From being a whiny lil shit to shamelessly cheating on his wife the first chance he got, here are 21 times Dean—drag, doormat and undeniable douche—drove us absolutely insane.

1. When he admitted to watching Rory without her knowing like a creepy mofo

Because that's not weird at all.

2. When he straight up told Rory she was just "nice to look at"

Because she's a girl so she only needs to be looked at.

3. When all he wanted in life was a woman to cook and clean for him

Because why wouldn't he?

4. When he got irrationally mad at Rory for not saying "I love you" after he gave her a car

Because he's in desperate need of validation.

5. When he GAVE her a CAR

Because he's clearly overcompensating.

6. When he was clingy AF and wouldn't let the poor girl breathe

Because he has nothing else going on in life.

7. When he was jealous AF and wouldn't let the poor girl breathe

Because he's probably insecure about being dull ole Dean.

8. When he tried to pick a fight with Jess out of said jealousy

Because the only thing he's got on Jess is a few inches.

9. When he selfishly infringed on Rory's alone time, even after she gave him explicit instructions not to

Because he REALLY has nothing else going on in life.

10. When he was threatened by Rory's ambition and hated her for wanting to focus on Harvard

Because he has no aspirations of his own and just wants to watch Lord of the Rings.

11. When he made Rory feel small for wanting to go to a school dance

Because he's ~too cool~ for school (dances).

12. When he didn't want to go to Rory's coming out party and complained like there was no tomorrow

Because he couldn't sacrifice a couple hours to eat some free fancy food.

13. When he was mad disrespectful to Rory's grandfather

Because he doesn't know how to respect his elders.

14. When he humiliated Rory by publicly breaking up with her not once but TWICE

Because the first time was not embarrassing enough.

15. When he married a girl for all the wrong reasons and then spent the entire marriage emotionally abusing her

Because he's horrible and reckless.

16. When he CHEATED on his wife with absolutely no hesitation

Because he just doesn't know when to stop.

17. When he was a literal doormat

Because Jess was totally right about him.

18. When Rory tried to encourage him to live up to his potential and he just yelled in her face

Because he really can't handle constructive criticism.

19. When he was lowkey coming in on Lorelai for the entire series

Because Rory's mom has got it goin' on.

20. When he was just a floppy-haired jerk and the whole town knew it

Because even Kirk knows what's up.

21. And lastly, when he dared bring a motherfucking salad into the Gilmore household

Because of course he would.

Lauren Graham is SO Emotional After Watching the 'Gilmore Girls' Revival

We're not the only ones who'll be ugly-crying through the entire Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix when it's released in just. four. days. Lorelai Lauren Graham gave her stamp of approval (which is all the endorsement we need, tbh) and yes, the whole thing made her emotional AF.

According to Vanity Fair, revisiting Stars Hollow nearly a decade after the series finale in 2007 was quite the journey for Graham.

“The biggest difference is all these people are grown-up. There’s still a lot of jokes and light moments, but this time, it has a greater depth,” Graham said of the revival. “There’s death and sadness and more love and emotion. I cried the whole way through the entire script. I thought it was just beautiful and fitting and what I wanted it to be and hoped for.”

Although it will be a reunion for many, the loss of an essential character will be apparent during the four 90-minute episodes. We're still distraught that the Gilmore patriarch won't be gracing our screens this time around; actor Edward Herrmann died from brain cancer in 2014, and a fitting tribute will be made to honor him during the first installment.

But the characters aren’t the only ones returning to Stars Hollow: the fans are, too. In that spirit, leaving us with closure was a significant consideration. Life can often get complicated and unpredictable and the show reflects this inevitable factor.

“There is some closure, but life goes on,” Palladino explained. “So there’s no neat wrap up in anything that we ever write whether it’s Gilmore Girls or any other project because life is ... Messy.” Ain't that the truth.

Catch Gilmore Girls: A Year In Life when it hits Netflix on November 25.

If 2016 wasn't already terrible enough with Brad and Angelina splitting up and, you know, the whole election thing, Glee star Naya Rivera just proved to us that 2016 really was the year that love died.

According to Marie Claire, Rivera has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband Ryan Dorsey. The couple, who first started dating back in 2010 and then broke up for a brief period of time, have only been married for two years and they have a one-year-old son together.

5 Ways to Style Dirty Hair

$

The life of a collegiette is a hectic one, and sometimes we have those days when we sit back and think: have I eaten today? Have I brushed my teeth? Have I showered recently? If the answer is no to the last question, don't sweat it! (Literally, because then you'll definitely have to take a shower). HC is here with the best tips for how to style your hair when you are too busy to hop in the shower.

1. Braids are your friend

What better way to hide your greasy locks than with a creative Katniss-style braided updo? The best thing about braids are that there are so many different styles to try! Our favorite is YouTube vlogger, JD's up-do with two braids. Simply part your hair down the middle, and form a braid on ecah side (Pippy Longstocking style). Then wrap each braid around the back of your head and secure it with a bobby pin.

We love this style because it has you looking put-together and ready to take on the day, even when your life is actually in shambles - and it only takes minutes to complete! Also, this hairstyle doesn't require an extensive use of headache-inducing bobby pins, so you'll be comfortable all day long!

Or, you can go with the classic side braid.

Shelly Adams, a junior at Shenandoah University, swears by this quick fix, "I collect my hair on the side of my head and braid it down tightly on the side, then I pull the braid apart to make it look more natural," she says. "I usually add a hairband to make it look dressy, too!" With either of these options, you can easily fool people into thinking that you put tons of time and effort into your hair that morning, when in reality, it's a dirty, knotty mess. With a braid and a headband, no one will ever know!

Also make sure to check out Riccardo Maggiore's, owner of Riccardo Maggiore Salons in New York City, loose side braid. Riccardo says, "This is perfect for fine hair because it creates the illusion of thickness. Holding the can 2-3 inches away from your head, spray the roots with dry shampoo allowing it to sit one to two minutes to absorb the excess oil. Turn head upside down and tousle or brush out any leftover product and fluff up your hair. Gather hair to one side and loosely braid. Secure with an elastic. The more imperfect your braid looks the better as it gives an effortless and casual vibe.”

2. Go for the top knot

Kaitlin Manion, a grad student at Temple University, says, "I always go for the top knot! Not only does it hide how knotted my hair is, it's a good look for work and class."

The top knot is the perfect hairstyle for when your hair is messy and dirty, but you want people to think it is clean! In order to make the perfect top knot every time, start with a pony-tail where you want the knot to be, split the hair into two parts and wrap one section of the hair around the pony tail loosely, and loop the other section of hair in the opposite direction of the first look. Check out a tutorial from Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins

3. Cover up isn't just a make-up term

If you are really crunched for time and can't even try one of those clever hairstyles, pull a Kate Middleton and hide that 'do under a hat! Sarah Nelson, a junior at the University of Iowa, says, "I go straight for the baseball cap! You can wear one with a cute outfit or sweats - they're pretty versatile!"

Headbands also serve as perfect cover-up material. Abby Piper, a junior at Notre Dame, says, "Half-up, half-down with a headband is one of my favorites. I can't quite pull off the 'fun bun' as one of my guy friends calls it, bit that's how a lot of girls are wearing their hair, half-up, half-down, right down."

So if you can't quite master some of the tricky, creative hairstyles, go simple while also being stylish.

4. Never underestimate the power of dry shampoo

Riccardo Maggiore says that for dirty hair, "The easiest quick fix is to use dry shampoo to freshen up your hair." Riccardo advises that you apply dry shampoo underneath by lifting the top layer of hair and spraying the root. "This will also add texture and volume," he adds.

But be warned, Riccardo says that most importantly, "Stop touching your hair! Even with the use of dry shampoo, you are depoisting more dirt and oils to your locks by continuing to play with your hair."

So while you think you may look cute twirling your hair in class, don't! You may be doing more harm than good!

5. Have several "second day plus" hairstyles in your arsenal

Ricardo encourages you to rock one of these cute hairstyles when you're going on the second day of skipping the hair wash:

Side Swept Chignon: "Apply a small amount of styling cream to your dry ends and twist your hair into a knot below your ear. Secure with a few bobby pins.

Beachy Waves: "Separate hair into small sections and lightly spritz with Sea Salt Texturizing Spray and scrunch and go.

Edgy and Cool Messy Ponytail: Spray texturizer on your roots and ends, comb through. Pull hair back at the nape and secure with an elastic. Wrap a small 1-inch section of hair around the elastic to hide it."

These lazy hairstyles are expert-approved, so the next time you find yourself sleeping in to skip the shower, try one of Riccardo’s tips!

We’re all just pretending to have our stuff together on a daily basis, aren’t we? Why should our hair be any different? Some of us are too busy with homework, group projects, grad school applications, on-campus jobs and internships to take advantage of luxuries like showering. We’re grooming ourselves to take over the world, and sometimes that requires skipping the actual grooming process! Go get ‘em girls!

How to Furnish Your Apartment Secondhand

During college, you probably started collecting odds and ends, like lamps and wall decorations and rugs and end tables, for your dorm or apartment. When you did that, were you thinking about your space in that moment, or were you considering what you might do with it after? A brand new floor rug and side table probably feel really great to purchase when you’re just starting out in college and searching for your own room furnishings, but when you move into your first unfurnished apartment, the last thing you’re going to be able to afford is a home full of brand new furniture and décor. What can you do instead? Fill your new home with new-to-you items by shopping secondhand! Antique stores, flea markets, consignment shops, yard sales and more can get you everything you need, from vintage status to barely used!

Check in with family and friends

Before hitting the shops, you might want to see what you can get from your friends and family for free. Mom and Dad will probably be happy to give you your great-grandmother’s coffee table that’s been gathering dust in the basement if you ask nicely, and when your aunt buys a new set of pots and pans she’d probably be glad to have you take her old ones off her hands! If your friends have an old entertainment center on the curb the next time you visit them, take it!

Rachel Cisto, a reporter at The Chief-Leader in NYC, furnished her first apartment entirely through hand-me-downs from a family friend. “One of my father’s friends said he had some furniture to get rid of, and a few days before I moved, I got a storage unit full of stuff—a coffee table, lamps, side tables, cabinets, a queen-sized bed, and two couches!” she says.

Haleigh Kopinski, Social Media Manager at American Eagle Outfitters for Aerie, also furnished parts of her home with the help of her family. “One of the most under-utilized source for second hand resources is family,” she says. “Our couch is from my dad and our storage stand in our bathroom is from my boyfriend's dad—he was going to throw it out because it was scratched wood with a missing knob.”

Refurbish or repurpose

If that old couch is too boring for you, or you hate the color of your stand, refurbish them! Pick out a new upholstery for the cushions and a fresh shade of paint for the stand to make those hand-me-downs look brand spanking new! “A coat of fresh paint and updated hardware made it a cute statement piece that always gets complimented,” Haleigh says of the stand. “And paint is my best friend, so our TV stand Craigslist find was a paint project as well.”

You can also repurpose old pieces you find into something entirely different! “We created a really chic night stand out of a wooden fruit crate. Thanks, Pinterest!” Haleigh says.

Alexandra Blessing, a PR intern, and her fiancé used two twin size beds that they already had to create a larger bed when they moved in together. “We're trying to spend as little as possible at the moment, and he had two twin size beds with frames, so we combined them,” she says. “There's a very fluffy mattress pad that spans over both beds, so we can't even feel the difference!”

Curbside browsing

When you’ve exhausted your free options, it’s time to hit the streets! You may get lucky right within your own neighborhood thanks to yard or estate sales. When someone down the road decides to do their spring-cleaning, and get rid of the contents of their attic, you never know what you could find, from dishes to a curio cabinet to an armchair! You might find entire room sets at an estate sale, when families are cleaning out their elderly or deceased family members’ homes. You might even find a perfectly good desk on the side of the road, ready to be taken to the dump.

Check Facebook or other apps

You might not even have to leave your house if you use your resources correctly. Thanks to the power of the internet, you might find some great deals on virtual yard sales. “One of the biggest places I find furniture for super cheap and even free are flea market groups on Facebook,” Haleigh says. “You can post what you're looking for, search posts in the group, or just view them as they're posted. It's kind of like Craigslist, but you can directly haggle and ask any questions you have.” Sometimes the sellers are so desperate to get rid of it that they’ll even deliver it to you!

You can also try downloading or visiting letgo, an app that uses your location to allow you to see what others have for sale locally. It shows you how long ago the item was listed, where it’s located and offers options to make offers or ask the seller questions.

Visit flea markets or consignment shops

If you’re ready to venture out to search for your next great piece, consignment shops and flea markets are the place to head to. From Goodwill to little mom-and-pop antique shops to full blown warehouse fairs, you could find anything you need. “Our coffee table was a Goodwill find for $70. It looked brand new and, when I looked online, I found that it was over $300 when bought in store,” Haleigh says.

Rachel Cisto’s town dump has a program called The Trading Post where people can drop off things in good condition that they don’t want. “I got a full set of dishes for a family of four, plus tons of glasses and mugs, a beanbag chair and one of those giant round saucer chairs from there,” she says.

Margeaux Biché, a junior at Barnard College, browses flea markets for furniture for her dorm, which she plans to reuse in her apartment. “You can always find things with great character at flea markets or consignment stores,” she says, “and you can often negotiate the price of items you're interested in! I have gotten some great rugs and pillows and other little decorative trinkets that really make my space my own.”

The things you’ll find if you take your time will make great conversation starters, because they’re so unique. “People always ask me about these items because they don't look anything like what everyone has from Urban Outfitters or other commonly-shopped-at places, so they provide a great story, too,” Margeaux says.

It might take a little bit of time to figure out what you’re looking for and to find something that is the quality you need, but the time spent searching for it will be well worth your while. You never know what kind of hidden treasures you’ll find while searching for second hand furniture, and with the right pieces you’ll always have something to discuss with guests.

Trump's Former Campaign Manager Says the President-Elect Won't Try to Lock Hillary Clinton Up

Remember the “lock her up” chants that rang out during the many of President-Elect Donald Trump’s campaign rallies? This intense call-to-action referred to Trump’s insistence that former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton should serve time for her infamous email scandal. Well, according to Kellyanne Conway, Trump's changed his mind now that he'll soon have a chance to follow through on many of his campaign promises. CNN reports Trump’s former campaign manager has confirmed that Trump no longer plans to take legal action against Clinton.

Though already at the forefront of American media, Trump gained more national attention when he threatened Clinton at the second presidential debate. "If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation,” Trump said at the time. The threat then evolved from a brief soundbite to, as CNN calls it, one of the president-elect’s most significant campaign promises.

Trump’s campaign continued to focus on throwing Clinton in jail. According to Huffington Post, the team criticized FBI Director James Comey for his initial disinterest in pressing charges against Clinton, congratulated him for introducing new evidence in the days leading up to the election, and then called him out for deciding that there was ultimately still no case worth pursuing in a courtroom.

Shortly after winning the election, Trump began to move away from his promise. Although he did tell 60 Minutes he would think about appointing a special Clinton prosecutor, the president-elect was quick to point out that he has more pressing issues to consider.

"I feel I want to focus on jobs. I want to focus on healthcare, I want to focus on the border and immigration and doing a really great immigration bill. And I want to focus on—all of these other things that we've been talking about,” he said in an interview with the program.

Trump now calls Clinton a good person, and Conway told MSNBC’s Morning Joe that “if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that's a good thing to do." Yeah, this feels about as natural as a bully offering to help a kid fix his underwear after giving him an atomic wedgie.

Gigi Hadid Apologizes for Her Melania Trump Impression

Gigi Hadid was met with a swarm of criticism after doing an impression of future First Lady Melania Trump at the American Music Awards. The skit, which featured Hadid attempting Melania's Slovenian accent, was meant to poke fun at the speech Melania plagiarized from current First Lady Michelle Obama. "I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia," Hadid joked, according to Cosmopolitan.

The second the skit was over Trump supporters and internet trolls flooded Gigi's Instagram, calling her every name in the book. Hadid's co-host Jay Pharoah defended her on social media, pointing out that Michelle Obama has long been a target of hatred, but in his words, "Nobody really snaps about it!" Pharoah's impression of President-elect Donald Trump also did not get nearly as much criticism as Hadid's take on Melania.

Hadid, an outspoken Clinton supporter, apologized to anyone she offended via Twitter and noted that the bit was all in good humor. She admitted that she even changed parts of the original script which she felt "took the joke too far."

As Aristotle said, "There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing." In other words, you can't please everybody—even if you are a famous and beautiful supermodel.
