9 Career Resolutions You Should Make in 2015

0
0

Take it from Oprah: another year, another chance for us to get it right. There's no time to stare wistfully at those tall office buildings in New York City or scroll endlessly through your dream company’s website—2015 is the year to take major steps toward realizing your career dreams! First things first: Check out these nine career resolutions to make for the New Year so you can start it off right.

1. Have a heart-to-heart with your career counselor

The career center is quite possibly one of the most underutilized resources on campus. Some students don't step a single foot through the doors during their four years at college, let alone have an actual conversation with their career counselors. They're definitely missing out on some great words of wisdom!

Take initiative this year by setting a goal to get to know your counselor at the career center. If you ever find yourself with nothing to do during a break you or have 10 minutes to spare, consider swinging by your counselor's office for a quick chat about everything from his or her career path to advice for your internship search. Trust us—it'll be worth it.

"Career development and job searching doesn't come naturally to anyone, so it's so important [for students] to get connected with their career centers because we have all this knowledge and experience and advice to give," says Whitney Moore, a career counselor at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

From a casual visit to start your career exploration to a scheduled mock interview, your career counselor has you covered. And the invaluable advice comes without a cost! You won't be able to come by this kind of free counseling so easily after you graduate.

"It's important to tap into those resources while you have them for free, and I think most career counselors in a college campus setting nowadays are really focused on helping students develop skills to be able to do these things on their own once they graduate," Moore says.

So what are you waiting for? Keep this resolution and you'll be on your way to becoming fast friends with an amazing career guru right on your college campus.

2. Add 10 contacts to your professional network

Ever wonder how people earn those engraved, shiny nameplates on their swanky office doors? It probably has a little bit to do with the people they know. You can start reaching for your own dream job by expanding your professional network, and there's no better time to start than now. Shoot to make 10 new professional contacts by the end of the year.

"Go to any event for alums and students on campus and do some intentional networking," says Rachel Cirelli, director of career development at Manhattan College. "Even call your alumni office and see what events are on the calendar for both alums and students. Think about going to these events and maybe talking to a handful of alums and getting their business cards."

Try to learn as much as you can at these events. Who knows, maybe you'll meet people who have your dream careers and you’ll be able to get some great advice from them! One-on-one networking at career fairs isn't just beneficial to upperclassmen, either. Everyone from first-years to soon-to-be-graduates can up their career game through networking.

"It's a great opportunity to ask, 'I might not be ready to intern right now, but I want to in the future with your company; what will you be looking for?'" Moore says.

Instead of just daydreaming about that nameplate, get networking!

3. Do a formal mock interview

Suit up! Another year means more time to perfect your interviewing skills. If you haven't done so already, set up a time to do a formal mock interview with your career counselor, a professor or a career mentor. It'll do wonders for your confidence once a job or internship is actually on the line.

"Go online and find an internship that looks interesting, and utilize someone you trust professionally and … sit with them, get dressed up for the interview and have them ask you some basic interview questions and assess where you're at," Cirelli says.

Whether you plan to interview at the career center or with a friend or family member, practicing your interviewing skills will help you get that much closer to landing your dream internship or job.

"For that first time interviewing, it is really nice to do a practice interview because there's no pressure of a real job or internship on the line and [you] can practice responding to questions," Moore says.

Practice makes perfect, so doing a practice interview is the first step toward nailing a real one.

4. Identify three potential career options that are perfect for you

When people ask you what you want to do after graduation, are you tired of responding with, "I'm not quite sure yet"? Well, 2015 could be the year you finally figure out what you really want to do with your life—with the help of lots of research, of course! Shoot for finding three potential career options you'd like to pursue by the end of the year.

"I find that a lot of students, even after they pick their majors, don't necessarily know how to apply to that major," Moore says. "It's important for students to start doing some research on what companies or industries they might have interest in."

Moore suggests using online resources like Wetfeet, an award-winning website that offers a career test, company research and other career-related information to start exploring your career options. Most career centers also have their own resources tailored to students on campus, like information on what alums with the same major as you have gone on to do.

5. Rock five informational interviews

Become a more knowledgeable you this year by conducting five informational interviews. An informational interview is a meeting in which you seek career advice from someone who works in an industry or has a job that you're interested in. Informational meetings are a great way to learn more about a company or industry and network with experts in a more casual setting.

"If there's a specific industry or company that [students are] interested in, it's great to be able to find someone in that job or working in that company for them to learn more about how they can set themselves up to be good candidates for those positions, what types of experiences they should be gaining and the person's career path, just to gain deeper insight and get firsthand suggestions," Moore says.

Use resources like LinkedIn and your college's alumni database to reach out to people whose work interests you, preferably someone you have a connection to, like a friend of a friend. Once you’ve reached out to that person, check out these great potential questions to ask during your informational interview.

"Talk to the person about their everyday job and see if it's something you would be interested in," Cirelli says. "Do more than just Google and read stuff—go actually speak with someone. Get out of your comfort zone."

6. Create your elevator pitch

A brand new year, a brand new you—which also means creating a new-and-improved elevator pitch, which is a 30-second introduction to yourself and your qualifications that you can give to potential employers and networking contacts. By making a resolution to think through an elevator pitch for yourself, you'll be ready to impress employers in no time.

"I have a 30-second introduction of myself: What do I want employers to know upfront?" Moore says. "Obviously their name, their education, their interests, what skills they may have to offer and always ending that with a question. It's important to make sure that the conversation can be reciprocal."

Your 30-second elevator pitch should aim to leave an impactful impression on potential employers by promoting your strengths, experiences and why you’re a good fit for a position. Besides covering the basic information, make sure to practice, practice, practice! Make your pitch memorable by customizing it to different industries and truly expressing your passion and interests—say your pitch like you mean it!

You'll be thankful you made this resolution when you find yourself having to respond to “Tell me about yourself” at an interview or a career fair.

7. Become a LinkedIn celebrity

This is your year to shine on LinkedIn! Have you been putting off filling out detailed descriptions of your jobs? How about asking former employers for LinkedIn recommendations? When was the last time you updated your profile, anyway? Now’s the time to make your LinkedIn profile stand out.

LinkedIn is a powerful networking and job-searching tool, so put in the effort to keep your profile in tip-top shape at all times. Connect with classmates and professors and really take the time to fill out those work descriptions. Try your best to keep updating your LinkedIn profile with new activities throughout the year, maybe every time you update your resume, so you're always on top of your game.

"Once [students are] thinking about what they want to [add to] their resume, that's a really good thing to then translate to a LinkedIn profile," Moore says. "Once you establish what key experiences you want to highlight on your resume, it helps you think through what you want on your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you're giving off the professional image and communicating the skills and attributes that you have to offer in a professional manner."

Catch the attention of employers on LinkedIn with your rock-star profile!

8. Join a new, career-related extracurricular activity

Getting ahead on your career goals doesn't have to mean being cooped up for hours with your laptop as your only companion. Set yourself a goal to be social and productive by getting involved outside the classroom while gaining valuable career experience!

"So many campuses have student groups now that are related to a field or a major, which can be an added bonus," Moore says. "And a lot of the time those student groups do projects that are related to the student's field of interest. It's just another great way to gain experience outside of the classroom related to what they want to do in the future."

Volunteering is also a great way to gain hands-on experience, especially if you’re able to find volunteering opportunities related to your field of interest. Extracurricular activities can be great experiences to apply to future internships or jobs.

9. Apply to one internship a week

Wait, say that again? Every single week? It seems like a huge commitment, but that's what New Year's resolutions are for. Plus, following through with the other resolutions mentioned above will make achieving this one so much easier.

"If a student is at the point where they're ready to do an internship, take steps to getting that internship," Moore says. "Visit the career center to help them get started."

One campus-specific resource to help you get started on your internship search is your college's job-search database. Other than that, you've already got the first steps covered, from networking at career fairs to practicing your interviewing skills.

Once you've compiled a list of internships you'd like to apply to, make an Excel sheet to order them by application deadline. Then, it's time to start applying! If you make applying to internships part of your weekly routine and treat it like required homework, there's no doubt you'll be making huge headway in your career path this year.

The New Year is a fresh start, and the career-related possibilities are endless! With these practical career goals on your list of New Year's resolutions, this year will be your time to shine.

6 Queer Web Series You Need to Binge-Watch

0
0

Many of us have a slight addiction to binge-watching TV shows, but it doesn’t take long to run out of LGBTQ+-friendly stuff to watch on Netflix. Looking to find something new? Check out a web series!

Each of the shows we’re recommending features at least one LGBTQ+ character and has LGBTQ+ issues as at least one of its central themes—and it treats it in a way actually directed at queer audiences. No token gay characters here. Here are just a few of our favorite web series out there.

1. K&A

Taking place in Boston, K&A is a comedy about two best friends (Karly, straight; and Alex, lesbian) that can be found on YouTube. Too dependent on each other to really find love with anyone else, the two have a bunch of odd adventures, like that time they go to the gynecologist and learn that queer girls can, in fact, get STIs, and the time they attempt a detox. Throughout the five-episode series, they spend time getting weird with each other and, yep, doing a decent amount of drinking.

What really makes this show worth watching is that it manages to embed important topics (STIs and alcoholism in the queer community) within strange conversations and humor. Lines like “My vagina feels like an avenger” will keep you coming back for more.

If you like comedy sketches and strong female characters, K&A is the show for you.

2. Little Horribles

There’s nothing like a show that opens with a lesbian sitting on a toilet with a cookie on her leg and another in her mouth.

Little Horribles is a comical web series that came out in 2013 that chronicles the decisions of a super-awkward, super-imperfect lesbian. She’s the type of woman to sleep with a woman and then call her friend (the ridiculously cool Issa Rae, whom some of you might know from her web series Awkward Black Girl) to tell her that she may have found the woman to mother all of her future children—and then get dumped by her in the morning.

Available on YouTube, the show is totally body-positive and honest in its portrayal of queerness and what it means to be a human in general. The women look like people, coming in all shapes and sizes—you don’t see that often on your TV screen—and everyone feels like a real person just struggling through dates and stilted conversation.

You’ll totally feel for Amy as she talks too much about tulips on first dates and goes to the movies by herself (only to hang—and totally bond—with a bunch of old people).

If you like shows like Girls and other half-drama, half-comedies, you’ll love Little Horribles.

3. F to 7th

Telling the story of an older lesbian and her “descent into pre-middle age,” F to 7th is a comedy that currently consists of two seasons. The show follows Ingrid, who is doing some self-exploration and dealing with her own sexuality after her bisexual girlfriend breaks up with her and her friends tease her for being butch but not wanting to admit to it. But don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a drama. Instead, this show hosts a quiet sort of humor, so you’ll love it if you fawn over shows like Arrested Development.

Since most shows that openly deal with sexuality tend to focus on people in their twenties or younger, this show is a welcome change. In episode two, Ingrid is called “a quiet case amongst dykes” for acting more stereotypically masculine, leading to a humorous discussion about the use of terminology like “butch.” The show even goes as far as to discuss the ability of women to be misogynistic. However, these conversations never feel like they’re going too far or beating you over the head with their messages. Pretty much everyone is too invested in Ingrid’s sex life and gender identity, an issue that is coated in comedy.

This is a good watch for anyone who likes politically correct shows but still has a sense of humor.

4. Carmilla

Carmilla, a modern adaptation of the novella by J. Sheridan LeFanu, tells the story of a queer collegiette and her fellow queer-girl friends, and their realization that their university is more supernatural than it once seemed. The show kicks off when Laura’s roommate disappears overnight. Her new roommate, the semi-sketchy Carmilla, is the roommate from hell. The realization that Carmilla is maybe a little strange occurs when Laura steals Carmilla’s soy milk to retaliate… and blood comes out of the carton.

This show will suck you in (no pun intended) because of the incredible bond between the friends and the way that the characters are so well developed. You can watch all 36 episodes of the first season on YouTube.

An added bonus for those who love to dive headfirst into a new show, Carmilla uses social media to connect with viewers and is active on Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.

This series is a must-see for anyone who has followed other adaptations of Carmilla or who loves mysteries—and some serious unresolved sexual tension.

5. Kelsey

Kelsey, a web series with 14 episodes, is about a totally weird girl and her friends. Fresh out of a long-term relationship, Kelsey is dating around (a lot) and trying to figure out what kind of person she actually wants to be with. Obviously, hilarious mishaps ensue.

The show kicks off with Kelsey failing pretty badly at moving on after her breakup. She makes a miserable attempt at a dating profile, dances alone in her apartment to “Can’t Touch This” and is then dragged to a bar by her hyper-diverse group of friends, where she experiences basically one of the worst kisses in the history of kissing.

A winning Kelsey line? “She’s Cameron Diaz, I’m an ogre and Pixar movies do come true.”

Kelsey is a must-watch for anyone who likes comedies about groups of friends. Each of Kelsey’s friends is quite a character, and you’ll wish you had friends like each of hers to get you through a breakup—even if it means getting set up with someone who would Hoover away at your bottom lip.

6. The 3 Bits

The 3 Bits is unique in that it follows three young siblings—two of whom who are queer—through their separate lives, devoting three episodes to each for a total of nine episodes. With themes like sex, drugs and family woven throughout, it’s sure to be an interesting watch for anyone with a thing for blunt characters with messy histories.

As The 3 Bits creators say, because it’s a web series, the show doesn’t have to bend to the desires of executives or advertisers. They get to “weird out”, which basically means talking about real-life experiences, totally unfiltered.

Mommy blogger Madison will make you laugh out loud—and cringe a little, too—as she challenges everyone who has ever judged a mom for not being good enough to her kid. She is a feminist in her own way, constantly talking about what it means to be a woman versus what it means to be a man.

Roman has recently stopped selling weed to become a gardener. You’ll admire her quiet nature and sweet heart. The moment she gest all dressed up to take her girlfriend on a date, you’ll swoon, and you’ll fall even further when you find out about her messy past—and messy present.

Henry, the third sibling, is introduced with a bang—no pun intended—via an orgy. He and his roommate, who is also queer, are trying to figure out whom to invite to their orgy through a hilarious exchange, considering that neither of them seem to have any idea what they’re doing.

This show is great for the stranger collegiettes who are looking for a show to weird out with.

Now that you’re armed with a new stash of inclusive web series ranging from comedy to supernatural, go grab your laptop and curl up for a few good hours (or days) of LGBTQ+ TV-watching!

5 Things to Do if You Don't Have a New Year’s Kiss

0
0

Picture this: its 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve. You’re rocking the cutest NYE outfit and your makeup is flawless. And then you suddenly realize that you’re stuck in a room full of people who are just waiting for the ball to drop so that they can partake in the age-old midnight kiss… and you’re all alone.

Granted, the midnight kiss is just one moment, but don’t start your New Year off boring! Here are five things to do if you don’t have a New Year’s kiss.

1. Photobomb other couples’ kisses

Whoops, didn’t we just say to start the New Year off right? Oh well. If you don’t have a picture-perfect New Year’s Eve kiss, why should anyone else?

Take this opportunity to master the art of the photobomb! Have another single friend ready, and just before midnight, jump in the background your favorite couple’s kiss. This is a New Year’s Eve kiss that none of you will forget.

2. Start a midnight tradition with your girl friends

Rather then dwelling on the situation, take this opportunity to brighten someone else’s New Year’s. Send your best friends a sappy love text or hug them at the stroke of midnight!

“Every year on New Year’s Eve, my friends and I reinvent the classic idea of Secret Santa,” says Sarah Korbluh, a senior at the University of Delaware. “We like to all write each other gushy love notes with cute little gifts to open up after the ball drops. It’s a great way for us to bring in the New Year—boyfriend or not.”

3. Call your mom (or dad!)

What better way to ring in the New Year than by celebrating with people you love? Mom and Dad are sure to be excited for your call, and it will make their New Year just as special.

“My mom is always my go-to call at midnight,” says Lisa, a University of Delaware senior. “I know how happy it makes her that she’s always first on my list. New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to reflect on how important family is.”

4. Resort to Ryan Gosling

“Hey, girl. It’s me, Ryan, and if I don’t get you through the night, I don't know what will.”

That's right: Ryan. Gosling. When all else fails, kiss Ryan Gosling at midnight. On your TV screen, phone—hey! Even print him out. If he’s not your best New Year’s kiss, well, we can’t help you.

5. Embrace it!

Embrace your kisslessness like a badass. Treat the New Year as a chance to celebrate your independence. Beginning the New Year as a single lady is a great way to start off fresh and focus on the other goals you want to accomplish in 2015!

Take this New Year in stride, and remind yourself that it’s the perfect time to find new ways to tackle your resolutions. Enjoy the holidays as the independent woman that you are!

Your Guide to At-Home Hair Removal

0
0

If there is one thing all girls can agree on, it's that they wish hair could remove itself. Shaving, tweezing, waxing—what they say really is true, beauty is pain.

And sometimes, going to the salon hurts your wallet too. Removing hair at home can be easy, painless and a whole lot cheaper. It is especially time efficient for those days you just can't get out to the salon or spa. In fact, you may never venture out again after you see these techniques!

Shaving

It's a timeless method that every woman knows like the back of her hand. Shaving is probably the most common type of hair removal at home. There are ways, however, that you can fully optimize your shaving experience.

We recommend shaving in the shower, and saving it for last. If the water is hot enough, the hairs will soften after several minutes and will be way easier to remove.

Out of shaving cream? Hair conditioner works just as well. It will leave your legs feeling smoother and more moisturized than usual. We also recommend exfoliating to reduce those in-grown hairs that frequently come with shaving.

The only downside to shaving is that those hairs manage to come back within a day or two. Boo!

Schick Quattro For Women, $9.49

Waxing

Waxing hurts, but the pay-off is often worth it. It's especially great for covering large areas of skin, such as your legs. It also has a more lasting effect than shaving and will keep the hair at bay a little longer, since it reaches under the surface of skin as well.

The most effective way to wax is to apply it in the direction of hair growth, and remove it in the opposite direction. Do not wax the same area more than once—if you have stray hairs, you can tweeze them. And be sure check the temperature of the wax before applying it. (Too cold, won't work; too hot = ouch!)

We also strongly advise you to exfoliate and moisturize, as this method can be quite painful.

Bliss Poetic Waxing At-Home Hair Removal Kit, $48

Tweezing

Have a couple of hairs here and there? Tweezing is the best way to go for the precision you need. It is also the best way to maintain those eyebrows in between waxing or threading. Do your own brows? Be sure to check out our ultimate guide to great eyebrows.

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, $22

Lasers

The pros of using at-home laser treatment? It's in the privacy of your own home, and nearly pain free.

The cons? It's more expensive than most other at-home options (but still cheaper than getting it done professionally). Plus, the cost may be worth it, as laser treatments have been provden to reduce hair growth after just a couple of treatments. Hair will grow back finer, lighter, and easier to remove. Eventually, it will not grow back at all and you can ditch the razor. How great does that sound?

TRIA Hair Removal Laser 4X, $449

Hair removal creams

If you've never tried Nair, just know that it's as close to magic as it gets. You put the cream on, and the hair comes off! We especially recommend this product for your upper lip and chin areas. It's affordable, quick, and easy. What more could you want? That being said, take caution with depilatory creams such as this one. Leaving them on for more than 5 to 10 minutes can result in some serious burning!

Nair Moisturizing Face Cream Hair Remover, $5.49

Have you tried any of these products? Which method works best for you? Let us know!

Pinterest Plans to Put Out More Ads in 2015

0
0

Whether you live, sleep and breathe Pinterest, or you just log on every once in a while to scope out the coolest new DIY projects, expect to see more ads popping up in your feed over the next year as the company plans on expanding its advertising test program.

Unlike advertisements you see on YouTube or Facebook, Pinterest ads won't totally be in your face. The ads will show up in your feed and look exactly like a regular pin, except you'll see a tag that says the pin is sponsored by a certain company.

If you didn't even realize that the company was already testing out a new advertisement program earlier this year, consider Pinterest's venture into native advertising a success. When the test program first began in June, Pinterest limited the number of clients, which included Lululemon, Expedia, Gap and Nestle. Now, Pinterest has opened the gates to any advertiser

Native advertising has become a controversial topic, leading users of many online platforms to feel overwhelmed by the flurry of ads and to even question the integrity of news companies that participate in this form of advertising. But in the case of Pinterest, you log on to find inspiration, discover and share ideas, not read the latest news, so is there any harm in having third party companies suggest recipes for you to try, beauty tricks to test out and places for you to visit?

In case you end up finding the new ads pesky, Pinterest will allow you to filter them out by clicking an "X" in the lower right corner of the pin. You then have the option to learn more about the pin or hide it altogether. If you choose to hide the pin, you can send Pinterest feedback on why you want it removed.

Though the thought of more ads on any platform may irritate you, remember that the main revenue source of these multi-billion dollar companies comes from advertising. So we'll just have to see how much advertising Pinterest puts out over the next year—maybe we won't even know the difference?

Real Live College Guy: He’s Freshly Single, Should I Make a Move?

0
0

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

There is this guy that I really like. Well, he recently broke up with his girlfriend. About a week after they broke up, we made out. However, I don't want to be just a rebound. How long should I wait until I make another move on him? –No Rebound at Ramapo

Ramapo,

Too late.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re already the rebound. Outside of telling him that you’re not okay with being the rebound and calling things off, there’s not much you can do about that. Why? A week after they broke up, he was already trying to find new prospects. To me, that shows that he’s rushing into something new before he’s had time to really comprehend what he just went through.

But let’s move on to your question: After a breakup, how long should someone wait before making a move? The truth is that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to that. Some people move on faster than others, and it really depends on the breakup. Was it amicable? Was it disastrous? Whose heart was broken? It also depends on another factor: How long were they together?

I’ve heard different things, Ramapo. I’ve heard people say it takes half the length of the relationship to truly get over someone, I’ve heard people say it takes twice as long as the length of the relationship… I’ve heard a lot of things, which means that there’s no certain answer. That’s just the way it is.

Now, you might be wondering, “How can I tell if he is or is not over his ex?” For starters, does he talk about her around you? If so, is he saying nice things, or is he bitter? When you’re out together, does he seem distant and unfocused? Is he trying to rush into something physical? In my experience, these are all examples of how guys who aren’t over their exes act.

As for how long should you wait? I’d love to tell you to wait until it seems like he’s ready, but that’s how rebounds happen. Sometimes, people seem ready when they really aren’t. You’re best bet here — if you really like him — is to communicate with him. Your feelings here are just as valid as his. You deserve to be with someone who isn’t just using you as a crutch to get over someone else. I’ve been in that position, and it’s not fun.

Talk to him about it. I think you’ve already fallen into rebound territory, but it’s not too late to get out of it.

Fill out my online form.

What it's Like to Fly Home for the Holidays

0
0

The reason you don't hear about positive travel experiences is because traveling is never actually pleasant. It's the story so depressing, even Dickens couldn't write it: A Tale of Traveling Between Two Cities, if you will.

You wake up in the morning feeling like the opposite of P. Diddy.

But you still grab everything you packed the night before (or the morning of) and head out.

Is your suitcase less than 50 pounds? Probably not.

You somehow talked your roommate into driving you to the airport at 4 in the morning, but let's just say she's not too happy about it.

Nothing a little coffee won't fix.

The airport is hell on wheels this morning because everyone wants to get home for break.

You just suck it up and go to the kiosk to print your boarding pass.

Great... you've got the aisle seat.

Say goodbye to the prime napping position that is the window seat.

Airport security is one of those places that will always make you feel guilty, even if you're doing nothing wrong.

Oh, you need to pat me down? Sure - I've always wanted to be publicly felt up.

But then the security officer takes away your moisturizer because it's too many ounces and you're like,

You need it!

You find a prime seat by your gate and you're just sitting there like,

Because watching everyone rush around is pretty hilarious, and you're ready to get home.

Just kidding, the flight's been delayed due to "bad weather conditions."

The. Worst.

You start to pray that you'll actually get onto your flight soon.

How can you bribe the stewardess to let you onto the plane anyway?

Why does everyone rush to the gate when they call Zone 1?

There is no way all of you people are in Zone 1.

You finally board and shove your carry-on into the overhead compartment.

Which is no easy task.

You sit down next to a man who looks nice enough, but you're so exhausted that you look like this:

And you're still on the lookout for that cutie you spotted going through security.

Oh, no - you didn't put your headphones in fast enough, and now the man is talking to you.

Not that you don't want to socialize, but you don't want to socialize.

Your ears are popping. You can't even hear him, but you'll nod along anyway.

And you wonder why he hasn't gotten the hint.

A few hours later...

You're begging for a nap.

Someone shut up that crying baby.

It's cute and all, but, really?

And while you're at it, that girl in row eight needs to simmer down, too.

Listen, girl: The person next to you doesn't want to hear about your trip to Tanzania. Literally nobody wants to hear about your trip to Tanzania.

Finally you land, and everyone suddenly thinks that just because the plane stopped, it's time to stand up.

We have to wait, people!

You have to awkwardly maneuver your carry-on out of the compartment without hitting anyone.

And it's impossible. There are casualties.

Time to play the "Is Your Luggage Going to Show Up?" game.

It's a game of chance, really.

Somehow your suitcase made it, so you grab that bad boy and run.

Your parents know to leave the car running so you can make your grand exit.

It may have been a long day, but you're home, and there's no place you'd rather be.

Because home is where the food is.

Now just wait until you get to do it all again on the way back.

But until then, enjoy your break!

4 Tips for Surviving Second Semester of Senior Year

0
0

It’s official: Second semester is upon us, and so is your most severe case of senioritis yet. Between trying to make your final college decision, pretending like you still care about your grades and answering incessant questions from curious family members, it can be difficult to stay motivated and focused on the last few months of high school.

Luckily, plenty of collegiettes have been in your shoes before and are here to offer their advice on surviving the second semester of senior year (and thriving)!

1. Try something new

At this point in your high school career, you’ve been around the block a few times, and you’re probably more than used to your same old routine. Combat the inevitable symptoms of senioritis by trying something you’ve never done before, whether it’s auditioning for the spring musical, trying out for the track team or joining a new club. Not only is stepping out of your comfort zone a great way to make new friends, but keeping busy will also help make the last few months of the year pass quickly.

“Deciding to play soccer my senior year was one of the best decisions I’ve made,” says Danielle Hensley, a freshman at Indiana University. “Having practice every day helped me to stay disciplined, and the semester flew by because I was always busy with practice or games. Not only was it a great way to stay fit, but I loved spending the time with new friends.”

Be on the lookout at the beginning of the semester for opportunities to find out more information about athletic teams, academic clubs, musicals and other extracurricular activities. Reach out to club leaders and fellow students to let them know you’re interested in getting involved with their team or organization, and approach them with any questions you may have. How often does the club meet? Are there any membership costs? Is it okay for a senior to join this late in the year? Not to mention, making a friend early in the process will help make the transition to a new club or team much easier and less nerve-wracking.

2. Live in the moment

We get it—after four years stuck in your sleepy little town, you’re ready to move onto bigger and better things! With the excitement of college on the horizon, it may seem nearly impossible to keep your mind fixed on anything but the future. However, don’t become so focused on counting down the days until graduation that you take these precious last weeks for granted.

Although it’s hard to imagine now, these may be some of your final memories with the classmates and teammates you’ve known since kindergarten. Embrace the little things like the late nights with your best friends, the home-cooked meals from your mom and the times you have to drive your little sister around in the car—you just might miss them a year from now!

Are you and one of your best friends headed off to different colleges in the fall? Make the most of your last few months together by doing the things you love. Grab fro-yo at your favorite after-school spot, shop for prom dresses and keep up your Friday-night Netflix tradition.

“During the last few months of high school, I tried to spend as much time with my best friends as I could,” Danielle says. “In the back of my mind, I knew we were all headed off to different colleges and that things would change soon, but I tried not to focus on that. I knew it was important that we all hang out and make the most of our time together while we could.”

3. Steer clear of drama

Your high school days are limited, so don’t spend them stressed out! While the petty fights with friends, the seemingly endless love-life problems and your parents’ strict curfew may seem like the end of the world now, they won’t last as long as you think.

Start the semester off fresh by pledging to gossip less and be more patient with your friends and family (despite the fact that they’ve already asked you 3,000 times what you’re going to major in). After all, you’d hate to look back a year from now and realize you spent your last few months of high school caught up in problems that you couldn’t care less about now.

Instead of resorting to gossiping, address issues with your friends face-to-face. After all, this isn’t middle school, and there are few problems that a mature conversation can’t fix. Is your BFF upset over a rumor that was spread? Are you not getting along with your SO? Before freaking out, take a deep breath and listen to the other person’s side of the story. Imagine the situation from his or her point of view, accept responsibility for what you said or did and offer to make amends as best as you can. More than likely, your friends don’t want to spend their last days of senior year caught up in drama either, so they’ll be willing to move on from little problems, too.

4. Plan ahead

For many pre-collegiettes, the final months of high school are the busiest and most stressful. Between trying to keep your grades up, finding the perfect prom dress, planning the dream spring break trip and making your final college decision, keeping track of everything that’s happening can seem nearly impossible. Do yourself a favor and kick off the new semester by making a conscious effort to become the most organized version of yourself yet. Keep careful notes of due dates and assignments, arrange appointments ahead of time and avoid procrastinating or over-scheduling yourself.

Keeping an assignment notebook is a great way to keep track of projects and test dates as they arise. Even if you’ve never kept track of your assignments before, the end of senior year isn’t too late to start. With all of the exciting events that happen throughout second semester, your calculus homework or the upcoming literature test are probably the last things on your mind. Check your assignment notebook on the daily, and you won’t have to stress about last-minute cramming.

Speaking of exciting events during second semester, prom may be closer than you think! Even if your plans aren’t finalized yet, you can still start looking for a dress or schedule your hair appointment. If you wait until the weeks before the dance to search for a dress, you may have trouble finding one you really like or one that fits you just right. Not to mention, getting a dress hemmed can take a week or two. Avoid any last-minute stress by starting your dress shopping ASAP!

If you’re still in the process of making a college decision, schedule a visit with your school guidance counselor. Even if you’ve never met with him or her one-on-one before, it’s never too late to reach out! Your guidance counselor can help you make lists to weigh the pros and cons of each school you’ve been accepted to.

“I met with a guidance counselor throughout the college process,” says Sarah Dilick, a freshman at New York University. “They definitely helped [me] with staying organized, because they have papers and checklists and binders to help you keep track of all your applications.”

Although the first half of the school year may seem like it dragged on, with second semester comes a serious change of pace. Focus on minimizing stress, getting involved with activities you’re passionate about and taking advantage of these final months with your best friends, because graduation will be here before you know it. Best of luck, pre-collegiettes!

4 Reasons Why New Year's Kisses Are Overrated

0
0

The clock reads 11:59 p.m. and the 10-second countdown begins.

“Ten!” You look over to the cute guy you’ve been talking and sitting with all night.

“Nine!” He looks at you.

“Eight!” Your heart flutters as he turns to you.

“Seven… six… five!” “So…” he says quietly.

“Four… three… two… one!” You both lean in very slowly until your lips touch.

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

And just like that… the kiss is over. He turns away from you to give his boys a bro fist bump to ring in the New Year. It was so short and not all that memorable, and now you’re wishing it never happened in the first place. Was that guy for real?

We’ve all heard that kissing someone on midnight on New Year’s Day will bring you good luck in the relationship department for the upcoming year. However, is the peck to bring dating prosperity worth it at all? Here are a few reasons why it’s probably best to opt out of a midnight make-out during the upcoming New Year’s festivities!

1. A kiss is just a kiss

A lot of people, including our very own Real Live College Guy Dale Lavine, think that there’s no point in a NYE kiss because it’s only a kiss! “For me, a kiss is a kiss,” says Dale. “Whether it's when I get off work or on Christmas morning or when the clock strikes 12, people should find that kiss as magical as any other kiss, especially if it's with someone they love.”

Jasmine Leach, a collegiette at Kean University, agrees with Dale. “If you have been in a relationship for a long time, there is no difference between having a regular kiss with your significant other compared to a New Year's one,” she says.

Dale also says that a kiss on New Year’s is just as silly as Valentine’s Day, saying that you should show your love every day, not just on one day in particular. “Why does this particular kiss represent anything more than your average, everyday kiss should represent?” he said.

He certainly has a point! If you’re fortunate enough to have someone to kiss, kissing that person on New Year’s Day shouldn’t be any different than kissing them on St. Patrick’s Day or on a Tuesday in July.

2. It’s forgettable

You’re out with your friends and enjoying the final hours of the old year to ring in the new one. A few drinks would definitely liven up the party! If you’re all poppin’ bottles to ring in the New Year, tipsiness is inevitable. If you find that special someone to plant a smooch on, do you really think you’ll remember all the details?

New Year’s kisses are forgettable, especially if you plan on celebrating with drinks!

All that alcohol in your system during a normal party can make you forget what you’ve done throughout the night, so the same amount will surely make you forget a midnight kiss that lasts only a few seconds at best. What’s the point of getting so excited about something that is sure to be another flash in the pan within a few weeks? Regardless, make sure you don’t overdo it with the drinks, though—better safe than sorry!

3. A kiss doesn’t lead to anything

You read it here first—New Year’s kisses don’t really lead to anything. They’re just a traditional tease to get all of our hormones in a tizzy!

In some respects, females are like males—we crave much more that kissing. However, when you’re at a populated party and making out with a random guy, that’s really all you’re going to be able to do.

Face it: there are way too many people around for you to get all hot and heavy with your lucky guy, so “getting a room” is off the list. To make matters worse, all that jungle juice in your system will probably bring your friskiness levels to maximum capacity. Ultimate frustration.

Jasmine suggests that kissing someone on NYE can toy with your make-out partner’s emotions. “Kissing stirs up feelings of affection and [a] deep connection. Why would you want to just play with someone's feelings for one night?” she says. “What if the person you decide to kiss really likes you? He would probably have his or her heart broken if they find out you just used them."

However, it may be the best thing that New Year’s kissing doesn’t lead to anything else! There are other opportunities for holiday hook-up sessions, but a populated party is definitely not the place. Taking a step back on New Year’s Eve and just enjoying yourself with good company is the way to go.

4. They’re awkward

From kissing a random guy you’ve never met to watching other people kiss, New Year’s kisses are awkward for everyone involved. Do you really want that drunk guy from your high school to smooch you at your best friend’s party? He’s been throwing out some terribly cheesy pick-up lines all night! Do you want to see your ex making out with a random girl at your party? You want to start the New Year off fresh, not being stuck in a totally awkward situation!

“I would think that the moment would be cute if they’re together as a couple,” says Danielle Gittleman, a senior at Rider University. “But if they are getting really into it, then yeah, I’d feel kind of weird being there!”

It would be best to deflect the awkward this year by just opting out of a kiss on the mouth and trying something new. Maybe give all of your single friends a kiss on the cheek. It’s awkwardness-free and super adorable! You’re never alone when you’re with friends.

New Year’s kisses may be traditional and the idea is pretty adorable, but when you put it all in perspective, they’re so overrated. Maybe when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, 2015, you and your friends can come up with a tradition of your own to do instead. Whether you’re spending a night with your beau or you’re out with your gal pals living up your single girl swag, don’t waste your time worrying about a silly kiss!

Your Ultimate Gym Beauty Routine: Do's & Don'ts

0

With the new year coming up tomorrow, you've probably already resolved to get yourself in shape (again). As you're planning out your new workout routine, don't forget to think about your before-and-after beauty regimen, too—we've got some great tips to keep you looking fabulous from the inside out!

Before you hit the gym

DO drink a glass or two of water. It will keep you hydrated before you begin sweating, and it's great for your skin, since it allows your body to flush out toxins and nourish your cells. Make sure you bring a water bottle with you to the gym as well so you can keep drinking water as needed.

DON'T do your makeup. This will increase your likelihood of breaking out, since foundation and running on the treadmill don't mix well. Plus, who wants to worry about not-so-smokey eyes or smudged lipstick when you're trying to work on your fitness? If you really want to wear something, just opt for a simple lip balm such as one from EOS to keep your lips moisturized.

DO pack a small athletic towel in your bag to wipe your face throughout your workout, if you desire. This can help you keep your skin clear and feel more comfortable.

DON'T wash your face. You'll just be sweating more anyways, so there's no need to wash your skin before you go; wait for this until you get back home.

At the gym

DO continue to drink water throughout your workout. It will give your body the hydration it needs to endure a difficult workout, and will continue to do wonders for your skin.

DON'T worry too much about your appearance while you're rocking it at the gym. You're there to get exercise and improve your health, so remind yourself it's not a beauty pagent and keep doing your thing!

DO freshen up a bit once you've completed your workout. Depending on how long your commute back home is, it just helps you to feel more comfortable. Here are a few items we recommend:

After the gym

DO shower as soon as possible. You'll feel better overall, and it's good to cleanse yourself to wash away sweat and odor before continuing with the rest of your day. This is the time when you should wash your face thoroughly with a gentle cleanser, such as Aveeno's Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser ($7). You can also wash your body with a gentle, nourishing body wash such as the Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash ($5.50) to prevent body acne.

DO continue to drink more water to restore any fluids your body lost while sweating, and to continue to help keep your skin clear.

What is your gym beauty routine, collegiettes? Tell us in the comments!

9 Ways to Stay Healthy at a Desk Job

0
0

Remember when your day used to involve running across campus from classes to office hours to club meetings? Now that you’re at a desk between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., the sudden lack of exercise may be driving you crazy. Don’t get us wrong, office life has its perks, but sitting in a chair for 40+ hours a week can make you feel pretty sluggish.

So how do you avoid this real-world slump? We’ve compiled a great list of ways to stay healthy on the job!

1. Link exercise to your daily routine

This is the number one tip Susan Holmberg, a specialist for behavior change for weight management, has for women who want to work exercise into their day: Hook your “workout” onto something you're going to do anyways!

It’s pretty obvious, but working some exercise into your day in the way that you get yourself to the office is an easy (and free!) way to make sure you’re staying healthy. If your office is way too far to walk to, consider getting off the bus or train a stop or two early so you walk a bit more than you normally would. If you drive to work, consider parking a few blocks away instead of right near your building.

If that’s not realistic for you, try incorporating exercise in other ways. For instance, if you can walk up to your floor instead of riding the elevator, you’re building easy cardio into your routine a few times a day. Stuck on the 20th floor of a high rise? Consider taking the elevator to the 15th floor and walking the last five flights or walking up the escalator instead of standing still.

On ground level? Use a kitchen or bathroom that isn’t close to your desk. “I used to work in an office with several floors,” Holmberg says. “For two years, every time I had to use the bathroom, I walked up two flights of stairs to the other end of the hallway!” It seems silly, but you can create a habit of anything if you do it enough times.

Or, give yourself a reward! There’s nothing wrong with a little self-bribery. “I’m a coffee addict, and I’m just going to have my coffee no matter what,” Holmberg says. “But, in order to get my coffee, I make sure I walk the half a mile to Starbucks each day. I’m doing something that I would do anyways, but turning it into a way to get exercise.”

2. Take walking lunches

If you have a lunch break, consider spending it walking. Eat at your desk while you work, and then spend your actual break elevating your heart rate (in a good way, of course!). Keep your tennis shoes in your desk drawer, throw on your headphones and go for a 20- to 30-minute walk. Walking increases your endorphin and serotonin levels, plus research has proven that a brisk, daily walk is associated with better cholesterol ratios and lower blood pressure.

“I have about 90 seminars related to my work that are downloaded onto my iPhone, and I listen to them as I walk,” Holmberg says. “Because I’m honed in to work-related materials, I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time, and I’m distracted while I’m walking.”

If the point of your lunch is to escape work, listen to NPR, the latest episode of your favorite podcast or a book on tape instead.

If you have a more flexible workday or a longer lunch break, you may even be able to sneak in a full workout. Take advantage of that in-office gym and shower, or consider joining a yoga studio in close proximity to your office.

3. Adjust your monitor

Staring at a screen for too long each day can cause worsening eyesight and computer vision syndrome (CVS)— eye and vision problems directly related to long-term computer use. For those of you glued to a computer all day, try adjusting your monitor settings to avoid straining your pupils more than necessary.

According to Gary Heiting, optometrist and senior editor at All About Vision, the brightness of your screen should match the lighting in your office. To test your settings, look at a blank text document. If it’s glowing, like a source of light, your monitor is too bright. If the white is dull and gray, it’s too dark. Try adjusting your color temperature as well—reducing this setting lowers the blue light emission, which is a short wavelength light that increases eyestrain.

Even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts, the American Optometric Association (AOA) suggests considering asking your optometrist for lenses specifically for computer use, which adjust for glare and reflection. Those who already have eyesight problems are more susceptible to CVS and can request glasses or contact lenses that are tinted or coated for maximum comfort.

4. Give your eyes a break

Even though you’ve optimized your monitor, giving your eyes a break is crucial throughout the day, as it helps your eyes refocus. Heiting says to make sure you’re blinking a lot to keep your eyes moist, as we’re at risk for dry eye when using a computer frequently. Try to take mini breaks at least once every 20 minutes by simply closing your eyes for a few seconds or looking away for a moment. For longer breaks, the AOA recommends a 15-minute break for every two hours of computer use. You can try these two exercises:

  1. Looking far away relaxes the focusing muscle inside the eye. To relax your eyes, simply gaze at a distant object for at least 20 seconds.
  2. Look at a faraway object for 10 to 15 seconds, then focus on something close to you for another 10 to 15 seconds. Repeating this several times reduces the risk of your eyes focusing to lock up.

5. Drink plenty of fluids

We’ve all heard that you’re supposed to drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day. Doctors tend to disagree on whether the eight-by-eight rule is accurate, since you need varying amounts of water based on factors such as your diet, exercise and even the climate you live in. Regardless, it’s easy to forget to drink when you’re sitting immobile for the majority of your day. Make sure you’re staying hydrated by keeping a water bottle at your desk. Plus, drinking more water means walks to the kitchen and extra bathroom breaks—an excellent excuse to get out of your chair!

If drinking lots of water is tough for you, try adding fruit or herbs for flavor (raspberries and mint are great!) or purchasing an insulated water bottle that will keep your drink cold all day so it's that much more appealing.

6. Switch up your workspace

Sitting for too long puts pressure on your spine, and hunching over a keyboard can strain your neck, back and shoulders. If you feel comfortable, consider asking your HR department for an ergonomic workspace—the options range from desk treadmills to standing desks. Or, try propping your computer monitor up and spend periods of the day standing at your desk. Holmberg crafted her own standing desk out of a lap desk with collapsible legs that sits on top of her regular desk.

Where should you put your monitor? The AOA says, “Optimally, the computer screen should be 15 to 20 degrees below eye level (about 4 or 5 inches) as measured from the center of the screen and 20 to 28 inches from the eyes.”

You could also think about swapping out your chair for a giant exercise ball. While sitting on a ball, your body is consistently making tiny adjustments to stay properly perched, working your core muscles, improving your posture and helping with overall balance.

If you’re willing to shell out a little cash, consider an Isokinetics Ball Chair. Worried your coworkers will make fun of you? Consider this balance pad, which mimics the top of an exercise ball, and no one in your office will even notice!

7. Brown-bag it

Though it’s tempting to eat out every day, buying lunch often means you’re consuming food that isn’t as healthy—you don’t really know exactly what you’re putting in your body.

“When you prepare your own lunch every day, you're living with intent,” Holmberg says. “You're already acting before you get to work, or start your week, and that act of intent is helping you to eat healthily and reasonably.”

Leta Stevens, a 2012 graduate of Purdue University, brings all of her meals to her 8-5 (sometimes 8-7!) desk job. “I always bring lunch and two snack-sized meals, one for midmorning and one for midafternoon when I know I get a little hungry,” she says. “It can be a hassle sometimes to have everything prepared ahead of time, but it is truly worth it—I spend less money and overall I feel better because I'm making healthy choices day-in and day-out, without giving myself room for excuses like not having a healthy alternative with me to eat.”

Another easy, calorie-saving tip? “I keep packs of Truvia and stevia drops at my desk so I can sweeten my black coffee,” Leta says. “It makes it easy to avoid artificial sweeteners and creamers!”

8. Walk and work

Getting in your exercise while being productive is the best of both worlds. Holmberg is a huge fan of moving meetings—she often walks with her clients for their hour-long session each week. If you think your coworkers might be interested, suggest taking a walk around your office or a stroll down the street to a coffee shop while talking business. It’s a win-win for everyone!

9. Take mini exercise breaks

If you have your own office, taking mini breaks and squeezing in five-minute workouts is very feasible—all you have to do is close your office door. Holmberg suggests getting an exercise stepper that you can store under your desk or handheld 3- to 5-pound weights. Mini steps are perfect for 60 to 90 seconds of high-intensity exercise, which are ideal for a quick break.

“One minute of high-intensity cardio actually burns more fat post-exercise than anything else you can do!” Holmberg says. “Plus, this type of workout doesn't stress your adrenals or create stress hormones!”

No matter where you work, remember how important it is to consciously stay healthy when you’re cooped up in an office all day!

7 New Year’s Resolutions That Will Save You Money

0
0

As collegiettes, we know exactly what it’s like to be broke. Fortunately, all our penny-pinching and money woes can be avoided with proper planning! The New Year is a time to reflect on our habits over the past year and address those we most wish to change. While in the past you may have pledged to shed a few pounds or take up a new hobby, this year you can promise to change your spending habits!

Looking to save up for a spring break road trip or even just a few pairs of new shoes? Here are some money-saving New Year's resolutions you can make to ensure that you’ll be able splurge come springtime!

1. Use your meal plan to the fullest

Fifteen bucks for a pizza. Eight bucks for Chinese takeout. Two bucks at the vending machine. It all adds up pretty quickly! Before you know it, you've spent more than $100 in one month just on fast food. Yikes!

Meal plans are prepaid, so it’s in your best interest to use them wisely. Next semester, avoid eating out or off campus as much as possible. If you’re over cafeteria food, invest in the basic cooking supplies, go grocery shopping and create tasty, budget-friendly meals in your dorm room or apartment.

2. Brew your own coffee in the morning

Pulling an all-nighter might justify a trip to the local coffee shop, but Ellie Kay, author of The 60-Minute Money Workout, says college students often don’t realize how much money they waste on coffee—particularly blended coffee drinks. “Some students have at least one Frappuccino or latte a day,” she says. “This tends to be where they congregate, but they don’t see where that’s adding up at the end of the month.”

You can save money by brewing your own coffee and sipping it from a reusable mug. This coffee maker from Target is only $19.99. However, the average cost for a single trip to a nationally recognized coffee house is $3.25 (based on the average price of a cup of coffee from Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts). If you purchase once a day five days a week, you will spend $16.25, which means you’ll spend at least $65 every month!

Can’t imagine giving up your daily Starbucks fix? Use baby steps — switch to homemade coffee five times a week and indulge in coffee-shop drinks on the weekends.

3. Shop around for textbooks

Buying new textbooks from the campus bookstore is expensive. Instead, buy and sell your textbooks online through retailers such as Barnes & Noble, or on websites such as Amazon or SlugBooks. SlugBooks even allows you to search for your school, class and professor, and it compares prices from the bookstore, Amazon and Half.com. They also have an option to rent books at a fraction of the cost to buy.

4. Start using a budgeting app

College has a way of making your money disappear. Use the Mint budgeting app to track where your cash is going! Mint lets you connect all of your accounts in one place to track and categorize your spending, pay bills, check your balances and double-check your budget before you make purchases. You can also set up reminders for upcoming payments and receive low account balance notifications. With Mint, you have the option to sync your account with your smartphone, tablet and computer. Best of all, if you lose any of your devices, you can go online and delete your account information easily.

5. Walk to class instead of driving

Sure, it might not be as fast as driving, but walking is the easiest, cheapest way to get around, and it’ll save you a LOT of gas! You can usually walk to just about everywhere on campus. If you’ve ever driven five minutes to class just because you didn’t feel like walking, definitely reconsider—it’ll mean more cash in your pocket in the long run.

Not only will you be saving money, but walking is also a simple way to burn calories without even feeling like you’re exercising!

6. Use your student ID everywhere you go

Everyone needs to unwind after studying, and college towns typically offer all sorts of opportunities for having fun: movie theaters, bars, cafes, arts centers, parks, downtown shopping centers, etc. Ask if any of these places offer student discounts. Sure, your student ID normally gets you into university events for free, but using it off campus can lead to great deals!

7. Stop skipping classes

How many times have you skipped college classes (or plan on skipping once you enroll)? Well, that’s your money (or your parents' money) going down the drain! According to the College Board, public four-year colleges charged, on average, $8,244 in tuition and fees for in-state students in the 2011-12 school year. For out-of-state students, the cost jumps to $20,770. Divide that by how many classes you’re taking this year, and your boring history class will seem a lot more valuable!

Getting up for an 8 a.m. class can be difficult, but brew yourself a cup of coffee with your new inexpensive coffee maker and walk to class. Your teachers are there to educate you, and it’s up to you to soak up as much knowledge as possible. You are paying for it, after all. Read our tips on how to stay awake during class if you need to!

By choosing one of these resolutions, you can set yourself up for a great New Year and a financially fit future. What are your tips for saving money in 2015? Share yours below in the comments and have a Happy New Year!

The Latest Beauty Trend: Eyebrow Extensions

0
0

Not long ago, barely-there brows were all the rage. Ever since then, we've had a love-hate relationship with our tweezers. Unfortunately for those who were overzealous with plucking in high school, the results can’t always be reversed—they can only be masked by eyebrow pencils and gels. That is, until now. Lynn La Palermo, founder and owner of Occhi' Lash & Brow Studio in Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois, gives new meaning to fuller eyebrows through—wait for it—eyebrow extensions!

Thanks to leaders of the bold brow pack, Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins, fuller eyebrows (not to be confused with exaggerated brows, one of the trends we hope we won’t see in 2015) are having a major moment. Now, collegiettes who have fallen victim to over-plucking can relive their days of bolder eyebrows, and those whose brows were initially scraggly can get a taste of the bold brow life. At Occhi', 30-year esthetician and makeup artist Palermo uses Brow Perfect, a technique from the U.K. that adds depth and dimension to eyebrows through the gluing of individual synthetic hairs either directly onto the skin or by attaching them to existing hair. The process for filling in small gaps takes approximately 10 minutes, whereas recreating a new brow takes closer to 45 minutes. What does it cost to recover your eyebrows, you ask? Naturally, a pretty penny—at the least, $45 for 15 minutes and at the most, $150 for an hour and a half.

As for the caveats of Brow Perfect—like all good things, your full brows must come to an end. The extensions can last up to 14 days. To help sustain the two week-life of the extensions, however, you must avoid applying makeup for 24 hours (add that to the Mission: Impossible sequel), avoid wetness and steam (does that mean no showering?) and avoid oily products on your extensions. Lastly, don’t rub, pick or pull on them.

The concept behind eyebrow extensions is somewhat similar to that of eyelash extensions, yet with every beauty trend that emerges so does our dubiousness. So what exactly about Brow Perfect is making us raise our eyebrows? For one, we want to know what, if any, damage the process can do to the skin around our eyebrows. More so, whether the extensions can prevent the growth of future eyebrow hairs. Or worse, can the process eventually lead to total eyebrow extinction?! The answers to our questions have yet to be made explicit, but for now we're all for eyebrow extensions—because you know we’re all about that brow, ‘bout that brow, no plucking.

Would you ever try eyebrow extensions for the sake of fuller brows?

7 Ways to Spice Up Your Relationship

You’re in the prime of your life, young and in love, but your relationship has fallen into a boring routine, a series of events that never really excite either of you anymore. Are you worrying and questioning if it’s time to let go of your SO since your relationship is losing its spark?

Sometimes even the best relationships can hit a rut, but it’s not always an unfixable problem. We understand how relationships can become dull for you and your SO once you’ve been dating for a really long time. From going on adventures to being extra romantic on date nights in, we’ve come up with a list of ways to spice up your relationship so you two can rekindle your fire and remind you why you fell for each other in the first place!

1. Make a scavenger hunt

A super-fun activity for you and your special someone can be to create a scavenger hunt for each other. The list of items can lead to places you both love to go to together or that are sentimental to your relationship. Give your SO clues that lead to your first-date spot or where you first met. Heading back to these meaningful locations will have you both reminiscing about what made you two work so well together in the first place.

Have the hunt finish with your SO meeting you at a new restaurant or spot you’ve never been before for a date where you can make new memories!

2. Cook a new dinner recipe

Another great chance to spend some quality time together is to skip that your typical off-campus restaurant for one weekend and cook dinner together.

You both can research delicious recipes you both love or have been dying to try (Pinterest has the best ideas!) and then shop for the ingredients together. It’ll be fun making something and then enjoying it afterward with each other. The intimacy of staying in as opposed to going to your usual spot can really spice up the night.

3. Go on an adventure

Experiencing something that makes your adrenaline go through the roof with someone you trust and love can be an incredible experience.

Carole Lieberman, M.D., psychiatrist and author, says, “Exploring exciting hobbies together … can be just the thing. Activities like these, where you need to have each other's back, can build trust and intimacy.”

These adventures don’t even need to be as intense as bungee jumping (unless you’re into that!). If you’ve always dreamed of scuba diving, riding in a hot air balloon or even going horseback riding, bring along your SO. These are unique experiences that you can share with the person you can let loose with!

4. Leave each other romantic love notes

If you’re always at your special someone’s house, apartment or dorm, consider leaving cute notes that remind him or her of how much you love each other. Once you both fall into the routine of a long-term relationship, “I love you” can be a phrase used too few times together.

“It can be very difficult to maintain a long-term relationship in college, where there are daily temptations to see what someone new would be like,” Dr. Lieberman says. “The grass always seems greener on the other side.”

Writing down quick, romantic notes can keep you on your SO’s mind all day. Alexandra Churchill, a college graduate from the University of New Hampshire, says that these gestures may seem small, but their sentimental meaning is what supports your relationship. “It was the little gestures that meant the world to me and to [my boyfriend]: He would leave me little sticky notes saying ‘I love you, beautiful’ when I was busy reading for class,” she says.

Reminders of how much you appreciate and care about each other can keep the worry of those temptations away and increase the attachment between the two of you.

5. Start a new hobby together

Picking out an activity that you both can make time for and will enjoy doing is the best way to make sure you get quality time together. Is there an interest you both go nuts over, or a class you two always talk about wanting to try? Check out what’s nearby and sign up!

Lanie Biggar, senior at St. John’s University, says,My boyfriend bought me a bike for my birthday, so we [made] biking our new hobby, which has been really fun. … Every Sunday we explore a different park in New York City.”

It can also be fun to work towards a similar goal. Have either of you wanted to run a 5K, or are you both hikers who always say you’ll climb that huge mountain one day? Train together to complete that common goal! Working hard toward a goal together can strengthen your relationship.

6. Act like high-school sweethearts

We know the pressure of college can really get to all of us at one point or another. Do you feel like the plans you have for after graduation, what internship you’ll have next year or college loans (ugh) make you feel too old for your late teens/early twenties?

The solution: Act like a teenager with the person you like being silly with. Pretend you’re high-schoolers who don’t have the weight of the world (or econ textbooks) on your shoulders. Make each other mix CDs with cheesy love songs, go roller-skating or go to an amusement park and engage in some serious PDA. Forgetting your inhibitions and tapping into those nostalgic activities will make you laugh and forget all the typical nights you two have already done together.

7. Take a trip

Mark in your planner when your next long weekend or break is, and plan a little getaway with your SO. Changing your usual relationship setting can refresh those feelings and make your relationship feel brand-new again. Without your roommates around or piles of studying that needs to get done, the two of you can focus on each other and not have to run on a schedule.

Taylor Zepeda, a senior at the University of California, San Diego, says, “Whether it’s a few weeks away or a month away, [my SO and I] like to plan dates to keep us excited for what’s ahead and to reinstitute those butterfly feelings that can sometimes get lost in a long-term relationship!”

If you’re the outdoorsy type, go camping in the woods or find the closest ski lodge and enjoy the slopes for a few days. Just getting away from the monotony of your current situation can help you both refocus on why you love being together.

After you’ve been dating for a really long time and your relationship gets dull, it’s important to think outside of the box to spice things up with your SO!

The 17 Stages of Winter Break

0
0
If there's one thing we look forward to for the entire first semester, it's going home for winter break. That is, until we realize that all of the places we used to hang out at are now full of middle school kids and the bars in our towns are like unwanted high school reunions.

It's winter break, so bring on the boredom, the overeating in your mom's kitchen and the incessant questions from family members about why you're single! Here's our take on the stages of being home for the holidays.

1. Finals are over, and you have never been more ready to go home.

2. You and your high school friends are already coordinating your first hangout for when you’re all back in town.

3. Best of all, you’re dying for your mom’s home-cooked meals.

4. You and your friends go out to the local bars that you were never old enough to get into until now…

5. ...and happen to run into that annoying girl from high school, that boy who could never fully understand the concept of being friend-zoned, your old babysitter and your parents’ friends.

6. Then you try hanging out at the mall or catching a movie...

7. ...but somehow everywhere you go is flooded with middle school and high school kids.

8. Public places are now a no-go. It’s okay, though, because winter break is also for relaxing, right?

9. You have nothing to do! You’re pretty sure that if you lay in your bed watching Netflix for 48 hours straight, no one would notice or care.

10. In fact, that might be all you can do, seeing as you and your friends are already bored of everything there is to do in your town.

11. Eventually the holiday high sets in, and you have a large to-do list that includes gift shopping and watching Elf at least three times.

12. As fun as it is to spend the holidays with your family, you’re aching to celebrate New Year's with your friends and not your kid sister.

13. By January, you’re drowning in boredom and dreaming of when you can go back to school.

14. Of course you love your parents, but you can’t say you’ll miss having to constantly dodge their questions about why you’re not dating anyone or what your GPA was this past semester.

15. By the time the new semester is drawing near, you and your college friends already have a full agenda of plans to make up for lost time.

16. Saying goodbye to you is never easy for your parents…

17. …but, eh, you’ll be back home to wreak havoc under their roof in May!

How to Recycle Your Holiday Dress

0
Holiday parties are a blast, but what's not a blast is picking out a festive and fabulous outfit for each of your many occasions. On a collegiette's budget, we can't be expected to shop for a brand new outfit every time we get invited to a party, so a girl's gotta recycle the most reliable items from her party wardrobe. Not sure how to re-wear the same piece without looking like a carbon copy of last weekend? Her Campus is here to help. We're showing you how to rock one party dress, this Becky Metallic and Sequin Contrast Shift Dress ($26 at boohoo), three different ways, for three different holiday parties. With the right tweaks, no one will even notice that you're recycling your festive frock!

Casual
Casual Recycle

For a more casual family party, there's no need to go all out with heels, so pair your holiday dress with short and fun boots, like these Dollhouse Perforated Cut-Out Ankle Boots ($29.70 on Amazon), and add a bit of interest by pairing the sequins of your dress with Lace Full Tights ($24.90 at Express). To finish the look, throw on this Christmas Preppy Style Plaid Grain Scarf ($13.30 at Chicnova) to keep you warm and add some festive flair to your outfit. Plus, by covering the sequined sleeves with your scarf, your holiday staple will look like a totally different dress!

Girl's night
Girl's Night

Hitting a night out with your girlfriends is the perfect excuse to rock a bright and bold outfit. Pair your gold dress with colorful accessories, like these hot pink Qupid Virtue-15 Platform Pumps ($29.95 at DSW), but skip the tights for a flirty vibe (you'll be inside anyway). Match your lips to your pumps by rocking the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Stained Gloss in New Wave ($18 at Sephora)... just make sure to keep the rest of your makeup natural! Finish off your fun and trendy look with some gold midi rings, like these Faux Pearl Midi Ring Set ($3.90 at Forever 21). Adding pops of color to your holiday dress will totally transform it!

New Year's Eve

NYE

On New Year's Eve, it's time to let the dress (not a scarf or pair of shoes) take center stage, so build an outfit around your sparkly centerpiece. Feel free to add an accent color (in this case, navy) so long as it doesn't steal the spotlight from the dress. By adding basic Body Shaping Full Tights ($22.90 at Express), some killer navy pumps, like these Almond Toe Hidden Platform Pumps in Navy ($19.79 at Charlotte Russe), will look streamlined and sexy without standing out too much. Skip the bold lips for this look (a midnight kiss could be in your future!) and frame your beautiful face with fabulous drop earrings, like these LEGALISEN Earrings in Navy ($15 at ALDO). We love that the top of these earrings works with the dress while the bottom ties in with the pumps. You're ready to ring in the New Year in style!

Using accessories you already have in your closet, you can turn that trusty holiday dress into the centerpiece for three totally different looks. The key to your fabulously festive wardrobe will be our little secret!
