Here's How to Make the Most Out of Your College Décor, According to an Art Expert

We understand the struggle: trying to transform a drab and depressing dorm or college apartment room into the space of your dreams can be tough. When you're living in a cramped space with less-than-exciting cream-colored walls and popcorn ceilings that are definitely at least a few decades old, it may feel like a lost cause. But, we promise there's hope — we've got Alix Greenberg, founder and CEO of ArtSugar and art aesthetic expert, to back us up. ArtSugar is a carefully curated online collection of the coolest artwork. Plus, ArtSugar collaborates with non-profit organizations to raise money for their cause through the sale of their incredible artwork (it's a total win-win).

"Sunset Shore" by Jaxon Roberts from ArtSugar

We asked Alix her tips and tricks for decorating your college space, especially when the state of your place may seem impossible to work with:

Her Campus (HC): What's your best advice for decorating in a smaller room or area (i.e. dorm room)? How do you recommend making a space look bigger than it actually is?

Alix Greenberg (AG): Use mirrors wherever you can because they'll bounce light around the room, making it feel more spacious! Additionally, I suggest picking larger art sizes to make the room feel grander in scale — we have great 20 inch by 30 inch framed prints on ArtSugar perfect for this purpose. Lastly, floor lamps are KEY for adding extra light and height to the space.

HC: How do recommend making your dorm or apartment feel like home?

AG: Incorporate mementos and heirlooms that tell stories! They make for great conversation starters and add a personal touch to your space. Also, consider custom artwork — select artists on ArtSugar can create custom family, friend or pet portraits in their unique artistic styles (which make for great gifts too!).

HC: How can a college student shop responsibly for home decor?

AG: Look for décor companies that donate to charity — you can give back while checking off the items you need on your list. ArtSugar donates 5% of proceeds from every purchase to various causes, with partners including City Harvest, ASPCA, Girls Who Code, and God’s Love We Deliver.

HC: How can college students use framed prints to decorate without breaking their university/landlord's rules, such as hammering or nailing them into the wall?

AG: ArtSugar has small 8 inch by 10 inch prints that are perfect for leaning against shelves and desks. You can also use hanging/removable strips for bigger prints — they come off cleanly when you take them off.

HC: Why are framed prints the best decorative accessory for any college dorm or apartment?

AG: Framed prints add a stylish and sophisticated touch to your dorm decor. Everyone has posters — so why not stand out with bold, eye-catching prints!

There's Already an Effort Underway to Unseat Susan Collins in 2020 After Her Kavanaugh Vote

After Senator Susan Collins announced on Friday that she would be voting to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, activists began working to prevent her from re-election in 2020.

Collins doesn't have a solid Democratic challenger yet; however, progressives still raised millions of dollars online to fund the eventual candidate. According to CNN, an Act Blue fundraising account reached more than $3 million — and that was just in the time that Collins was reading her speech about nominating Kavanaugh.

A number of potential candidates were floated on social media, including Susan Rice, the former national security adviser for President Obama. She reportedly has a home in Maine and ties to the state.

She followed up her tweet with, "Many thanks for the encourgement (sic). I'm not making any announcements. Like so many Americans, I am deeply disappointed in Senator Collins' vote for Kavanaugh. Maine and America deserve better."

CNN reported other possible challengers, including Chellie Pingree, the Democrat representing Southern Maine in the US House; Sara Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives; Seth Berry, a former member of the Maine House of Representatives; and Hannah Pingree, a former speaker of the Maine House and Pingree's daughter.

"I would certainly not rule it out," Berry told CNN. "There are others who are equally qualified and I would want to look at the whole field before I make a decision, but clearly Sen. Collins made a choice that did not reflect the people of Maine and our values."

Gideon said she's "considering" running. "I have a very important responsibility from now until November 6 to re-elect a Democratic majority (in the Maine House), so I am laser-focused on that in the next four and a half weeks," she added. "However, this is something I am seriously considering and once we get past November 6 then I will be really laying out everything and making a decision."

She continued, "As a woman, it is absolutely fundamentally tied to my belief about what he will do as a justice on women's reproductive rights, but further than that, when the testimony of Dr. Ford came out, it really did become something different."

No formal announcements were made.

Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino Will Spend 8 Months in Prison for Tax Evasion

Jersey Shore's Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino was sentenced to 8 months in federal prison for tax evasion on Friday. The sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release and 500 hours of community service. Mike was also fined $10,000 and forced to pay $123,000 in restitution.

The reality star pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in January, while his brother, Marc Sorrentino, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding in the preparation of a fraudulent tax return, E! News reported. Marc was sentenced to 24 months in prison and fined $7,500.

According to US prosecutors, the two hid millions of dollars that Mike made while starring on Jersey Shore between 2010 and 2012.

"We are very happy to put this behind us," he wrote on Instagram alongside photos of him, his co-stars, and his fiancee Lauren Pesce at the sentencing hearing. "Thank you so much for all the love [and] support."

Jenni "JWoww" Farley, Ronnie Magro-Ortiz, DJ Pauly D, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Deena Cortese, Vinny Guadagnino and Angelina Pivarnick all attended the hearing in Newark, New Jersey. JWoww and Snooki just attended an engagement party for Mike and Pesce last week.

"Michael accepts the Court's judgment. He is looking forward to marrying his college sweetheart, Lauren Pesce, next month, and moving forward together after he serves his sentence," Mike's lawyer Henry E. Klingeman told E! News.

US Attorney Craig Carpenito released a statement about the brothers' sentencing.

"The law requires all Americans to pay our fair share of taxes," Carpenito said. "These defendants deliberately flouted this requirement, acting as though fame and celebrity status placed them above the law. They are not. Tax fraud is as serious as any other form of theft from the government, and the sentences imposed today should make that abundantly clear."

Mike reportedly has 30 to 60 days to surrender.

4 Ways Location Factors Into Your College Experience

0
0

College is most notably known as the best four years of our lives. It’s almost seen as a weird limbo where you have the freedom to live on your own and be who you want, while still having your parents to come to the rescue if you can’t figure out if that shirt goes in the “whites” pile while doing laundry. In reality, though, college isn’t all fun and games. The imminent stress that comes with higher level education, the pressure to figure out your future life and career and the desire to find your own personal niche can be overwhelming.

We’ve all heard that the college you go to will ultimately determine the course of your life (a little dramatic, I know), but we never really think about how the actual location of the college itself can impact our experience. It’s important to remember that each student is different and the environment that surrounds us can affect our study habits, moods and even our overall success. Here are some factors to take into consideration before you jump into applying to every school you see on the internet:

1. Make sure you can handle the weather

Although it may be a seemingly insignificant factor, it can have a much bigger effect on you than you may think. We know what you’re thinking—if it’s cold, I can just put a jacket on; if it’s hot, you wear shorts. Easy, right? Not always.

Things such as pollen count can also be a huge factor. Places that have a notably higher pollen count might not be ideal for those that are more sensitive to allergies. You don’t want to be the one with a runny nose in class 24/7 and there’s only so much antihistamines can do to save you.

Actual weather is also a huge factor. Some people find rainy, cloudy weather soothing and rely on it to keep focus. For these people, looking for a college that fits this weather description is essential to their successes. On the other hand, if you are someone who loves natural light, sunny weather, clear skies and warmth, move somewhere that doesn’t get a lot of rain. We know, it’s pretty self explanatory right? However, surprisingly this is something most people don’t take into consideration because they get so distracted by the other factors. Nevertheless, weather can have a huge impact on your overall happiness as well as your level of motivation. For people who thrive in sunny, bright environments, rain can have a detrimental effect on their mood.

For Marisa Pieper, a student from Arizona State University, this was the case. “I moved from cold, wet, grey Oregon to sunny, warm, desert Arizona because I would get seasonal depression in Oregon and wanted to get away from that for college,” she explains. “I do so much better in school and on a daily basis so living in the sunshine definitely helped me.”

Weather can affect people in very different ways. Some thrive in the rain because it provides a calming atmosphere, while some find their mood takes a hit because of the gloomy weather. Don’t ignore the kind of atmosphere that’s best for your own success—think about it when you’re doing research about colleges and visiting schools.

2. Do you want to move in-state or go out-of-state?

Depending on what kind of person you are, a school’s distance from home can also be a huge determining factor. Some collegiettes are eager to move hundreds of miles away from home, while others feel as if staying close to home is the best for them. One big thing to consider is whether you would like to stay in the comfort of your home state, or move far away to another state.

Keele Johnson, a student at Collin County Community College, says that going to a local community college might be a good choice for students who aren’t financially or emotionally prepared to go to a university. “I chose to go to a community college close to home for the first couple of years because I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do yet,” she says. “It’s a great way to save money and figure out what I really wanted to start doing before going on to the real deal.” Going to a college in your hometown gives you the ability to stay at home and avoid paying for rent while also being able to enjoy mother’s cooking. Sure, it may not be the “freedom” you’ve hoped for, but there are definitely still benefits. College can be a scary thing, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with easing yourself into the process into adulthood.

If you still want to move a good distance from home but want to escape outrageous out-of-state tuition, you could always move to another city that you aren’t very familiar with within your state. For Doan Nguyen, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, moving to Austin was just the right amount of change she needed. “Moving to Austin was the perfect combination of getting the new experiences I was searching for without having to throw myself into the complete unknown,” she explains. “Austin is definitely a completely different city than my old suburban hometown of Plano so it allowed me to experience a whole different world without moving too far away from home.” Moving to another city can still offer you a completely different environment than the one you have at home even if it is within the same state.

However, if you're someone who can’t wait to go off on your own, maybe a college further away from home is better for you. For you, out-of-state colleges are probably more your cup of tea. For some people, a drastic change is what motivates them and allows them to strive to be their best and moving to a completely different state is just what they need.

If this is you, it’s important to consider that being far from home may mean that you won’t be able to come home for every single holiday. If this is something that’s holding you back, one solution is to look up the percentage of out-of-state students vs. in-state students the college has. If it has a high in-state percentage, there will be a higher possibility that you’ll meet in-state friends that will be in town for the holidays so you won't be as lonely. On the other hand, if there is a high out-of-state percentage you have something in common with most people. It could make meeting people a lot easier knowing that they’re just as lost as you; you just won’t be able to tag along to their family holiday dinners. Both have many pros and cons depending on what you’re looking for. In addition, out-of-state colleges won’t allow you to run home for emergencies or forgotten items. However, if that’s not a big issue, then going out-of-state could be a great new experience.

3. Think about whether you prefer a more urban or rural environment

This is definitely one of the most obvious factors to take into consideration when choosing your ideal college. Many colleges are either in the middle of downtown in a huge city—or in a small town in a more rural area. This can have a huge impact on not only your overall success, but your overall happiness as well.

For college graduate Sojin Kim, the location of the School of the Arts in Chicago was perfect for her because the campus was sprawled across downtown Chicago.

“I visited and loved the city and fast-paced environment,” she says. “I am not someone who likes quiet or slow paced things. I like to get things done quickly and efficiently. The city motivated me to graduate because I couldn’t wait to get a job in the downtown.”

If you’re someone who fast walks everywhere and loves the hustle and bustle of a city, you might enjoy the urban college environment. If you’re the type of person who can’t stand crowded transportation and getting lost because you took the wrong subway, you may want to reconsider.

There are plenty of other people who love quiet, tight-knit college communities. The benefit of being at a smaller college in a more rural or suburban area means that you could bring your car and have more chances to drive around. However, if you’re not bringing your car, you may want to consider if walking long distances is going to be a problem.

Rachna Shah, an incoming freshman at Dartmouth College, said rural life was for her. “In the fall, I'll be attending Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire which is notoriously known for being ‘in the middle of nowhere,’ she says. “I'm really looking forward to engrossing myself in nature and the tight community, though, despite the fact that I've grown up near Chicago.”

Living in a certain type of environment all your life can allow you to realize what kind of surroundings are right for you. Maybe you want to go to school in a location similar to your hometown, or maybe you want the complete opposite.

4. How much of a college town is your town?

There is no doubt that some towns are more school spirited than others. Places like Austin, Texas, have burnt-orange street signs the moment you enter the city because it's where the University of Texas at Austin is. Other towns are not so “hyped” when it comes to college spirit. This is something that most people may not even consider. However, it’s important to remember that you are not only going to school there, but you’ll have to step off the campus every once in a while.

If you’re the type of person that loves school spirit, find a city that loves it, too. Having a city that makes a big deal about football games, basketball games, swim meets, academic decathlons or even just simple school events will allow you to feel connected to your community outside of the campus.

School spirit is definitely not for everyone. However, if it is your cup of tea, find a place that will fill your kettle!

1. The Conjuring

Where to Stream: Netflix

Are you really celebrating Halloween if you don’t watch at least one movie in which an innocent family tries to eradicate a supernatural entity that’s manifested in their house?

2. The Babadook

Where to Stream: Netflix

This movie follows a single mother and her awful son, but shit goes down after she reads her son a pop-up book. Weird stuff just keeps happening, but we don’t want to spoil too much about the film, other than the fact that the son is the real monster in this film—jk, not really. Seriously, this movie is better than birth control.

3. Children of the Corn

Where to Stream: Hulu, Netflix

If you’re a Stephen King fan, then you probably already watch this movie every October (and every month in between). If you aren’t already terrified of children, this movie will solidify your fear.

4. Oculus

Where to Stream: Netflix

Love films about supernatural phenomena with a twist? This is the perfect one for you. It follows two siblings and a possessed mirror while the siblings try to prove the creepy crap the mirror does.

5. Clown

Where to Stream: Netflix

If you need a palette cleanser from the It remake, which was more laughable than scary, Clown is certain to make your irrational fear of clowns resurface. This movie doesn’t involve any sewer clowns. Instead, it follows a loving father who puts on a clown costume for his son’s birthday party. However, the costume begins to fuse with his body, and it just escalates from there.

6. The Haunting in Connecticut

Where to Stream: Amazon

This movie essentially answers what would happen if you moved into an old mortuary. Hint: nothing good. The only thing more frightening than a haunted ex-mortuary turned residential home is the fact that this movie is based on an actual haunted house.

7. Poltergeist

Where to Stream: Amazon

If you haven’t seen this classic scary movie, what are you doing with your life? It's about a poltergeist that kidnaps a child, which is only made creepier by the fact that the production used real human skeletons. Apparently, prop skeletons weren’t good enough? Did we mention several members of the cast also passed away shortly after production of the trilogy? It spawned the theory of the Poltergeist"curse."

8. The Silence of the Lambs

Where to Stream: Amazon, HBO Go

This movie follows an FBI trainee who interrogates an apprehended cannibalistic serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, to catch a similar serial killer (Buffalo Bill). Though the movie might not be family-friendly (unless your family has some liberal opinions about cannibalism), it’s an exceptional adaptation of the Ted Tally novel.

9. 28 Days Later

Where to Stream: Amazon

What happens after a “zombie” outbreak? This film explores the even more frightening parts of human nature during a crisis. After all, what Halloween horror movie marathon would be complete without a zombie flick? And by zombies, I don’t mean those slow-moving corpses on The Walking Dead. I mean real zombies that, you know, run. TWD fans, sorry, not sorry.

10. 28 Weeks Later

Where to Stream: Amazon, Hulu

After all, the first film kind of leaves you wondering what the hell happens next. This sequel to 28 Days Later answers all your questions about what would happen if someone totally and completely effed up quarantining a zombie apocalypse, repopulating the world and understanding overall virus transmission. Because these are the real questions everyone should ask in a post-apocalyptic movie.

11. Jeepers Creepers

Where to Stream: Amazon

If you love watching movies about killer humanoid creatures that treat you like organ farms, this is your ideal Halloween horror movie. Or if you just want to watch Justin Long before his comedy days, here you go! Seriously, the creature in this movie is virtually unstoppable and is bound to make it difficult for you to fall asleep, travel through rural Florida orturn your back on scarecrows ever again.

12. Raw

Where to Stream: Netflix, Amazon

This movie is essentially a warning against college hazing. Seeing as the main character, who starts off as a vegetarian, is coerced into eating a raw rabbit kidney and then develops an insatiable hunger for raw meat. If you get queasy about blood—even fake blood—you might not want to watch this one.

13. Hostel

Where to Stream: Amazon, Showtime

Despite this movie being used as a documentary by every overprotective parent before their child goes on spring break, it depicts a chilling scenario of what could happen to anyone.

14. Carrie

Where to Stream: Amazon

In this ultimate underdog story, a teen develops some supernatural abilities to get revenge on her bullies and abusive mother. We get it—violence is never the answer…except when you have telekinetic powers and everyone around you is a dick. While there was a 2013 remake of the film, the original is the better option if you don’t have the time to read the Stephen King novel.

15. Lights Out

Where to Stream: Amazon

This movie exacerbates nearly everyone’s childhood (and sometimes adulthood) fear: the dark. You could also watch the short film that made the full movie a success. Warning: Do not watch this before bed!

Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed & Sworn In As Supreme Court Justice

Following a vicious confirmation process riddled with sexual misconduct allegations that appeared to possible derail it, the Senate officially confirmed President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh as the next Supreme Court justice on Saturday. Delivering a huge victory for Trump, the final vote to confirm Kavanaugh was, just like his confirmation process, anything but smooth.

With vociferous chants of “Shame! Shame! Shame!” from protesters in the public viewing gallery, divided senators voted 50-48, with one present, to confirm Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who would have voted against Kavanaugh’s confirmation, noted that she would like her vote to be marked “present,” a logistical maneuver that would address the fact Republican Sen. Steve Daines of Montana was unable to attend the confirmation vote because he walked his daughter down the aisle. Murkowski’s present vote, along with Daines’ expected vote in favor of Kavanaugh, ultimately negated each other.

via Senate TV - Reuters

Vice President Mike Pence, who serves as the president of the Senate, had to repeatedly call the sergeant at arms to calm protesters in the gallery during the vote, ABC News reports.

“I do not consent! Where's my representation?” a female protester yelled from the gallery before being removed from the chamber.

Shortly after the vote, Trump congratulated the Senate and his nominee.

“I applaud and congratulate the U.S. Senate for confirming our GREAT NOMINEE, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, to the United States Supreme Court,” Trump tweeted. “Later today, I will sign his Commission of Appointment, and he will be officially sworn in. Very exciting!”

According to CNN, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the president called his Supreme Court nominee while aboard Air Force One to congratulate him while on his way to a campaign rally in Kansas.

Before an enthusiastic crowd at a rally in Topeka, Kansas, Trump applauded Kavanaugh’s confirmation, calling it a “historic night.”

“I stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation, our people and our beloved Constitution,” Trump said, while also dismissing the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh by accusing Democrats of waging a “shameless campaign of political and personal destruction.”

Saturday evening, Kavanaugh and his wife, Ashley Kavanaugh, were seen in a black SUV entering the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh was sworn in by Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose spot he will be taking when the justice retires, and current Justice John Roberts.

The confirmation vote came after weeks of tense political debate, as Kavanaugh defended himself against sexual misconduct allegations. Adding to the uncertainty of his confirmation, the Senate Judiciary Committee requested the FBI conduct a supplemental background investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations waged against Kavanaugh by chief Kavanaugh accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, as well as another accuser, Deborah Ramirez.

His path to being confirmed to the Supreme Court seemed to rest in the hands of a few key wavering senators, but his path ultimately cleared when Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Jeff Flake of Arizona announced that they would vote in favor of the nominee after concluding that Ford’s allegations, voiced by her in an emotional testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, were not corroborated in the supplemental background investigation.

Just hours after the Senate voted 51-49 Friday to end debate and proceed to the confirmation vote, Collins announced during a speech on the Senate floor that she would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, according to CNN.

“This is not a criminal trial, and I do not believe that claims such as these need to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt,” Collins said in her lengthy speech defending her decision to vote in favor of Kavanaugh.

Following Collins’ announcement of support, West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, another key undecided vote, declared in a statement that he, too, would vote “yes,” ensuring the votes needed to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Manchin, a red state Democrat, said that while he had “reservations” regarding the allegations, he did what was “best for West Virginia,” confident that Kavanaugh would “follow the Constitution.”

Ford’s attorneys announced that their client had no regrets in coming forward with her story, ABC News reports.

“I think she feels good about the fact that she came forward and did what she felt strongly was her civic duty to do, which is to provide the information she had to the Judiciary Committee so that they could make a better decision — a more informed decision,” Ford’s attorney, Lisa Banks, told ABC News’ Congressional Correspondent Mary Bruce.

When asked if Ford would ever be able to lead a normal life again, her attorney sounded optimistic.

“She’s going to go back to teaching. She loves being a teacher. She's very good at it,” attorney Debra Katz said. “And she's looking forward to getting back to her family and her friends and her job. And we continue this fight, we continue to look for corroborating evidence against Judge Kavanaugh.”

How to Find a Great Mentor in College

0
0

Growing up, you may have felt like adults were always around to guide you and help you make difficult decisions: teachers in the classroom, coaches on the field and your parents at home. Once you enter college, you’ll face so many new experiences and situations that you may be left asking yourself, “Who’s here to help me now?” Luckily, even in college, you’re still surrounded by adults and experts willing to offer a helping hand, although they may not be as obvious as your earlier sources of guidance. These advisors are often referred to as mentors. Finding the right mentor and developing a relationship with him or her offers many advantages and potential opportunities for a collegiette.

We talked to career experts and a recent graduate to get the low-down on all things mentorship: who mentors are, where to find them and how they can benefit you.

What is a mentor?

A mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable individual acts as a trusted advisor to someone with less experience. The relationship is typically long-term and focused on supporting the growth and development of the mentee.

A mentor-mentee relationship can take place on many levels and in many different situations, but in college it is typically academic- or career-related. A mentor may give you direction when deciding on an academic path in college as well as preparing for post-college plans, such as attending graduate school or finding your first job.

Why should I have a mentor?

A mentor can have an incredible impact on the life of a student, both career-wise and on a personal level. Your mentor has gone through similar stages to those that you are currently going through, so he or she can offer first-hand advice of what worked or what he or she would have done differently. Mentors can offer better perspective when it comes to making career related decisions, such as what summer internship you should apply for or what elective classes would be relevant to you in the future.

“It is invaluable to have access to someone who has insight and hindsight regarding the career path you are pursuing,” says Barbara Zito, a career development specialist for the University Career Services office at Rutgers University. “It’s the closest thing to having a crystal ball to see the future: You have an idea that if you do X and Y, then Z might happen.”

There is no one way a mentorship has to look. Feel free to tailor the mentor/mentee relationship to fit what you specifically want to get out of it. A mentor can be that sounding board, support system, voice of clarity or extra boost of confidence we all need sometimes!

Having one mentor in college can lead to having many mentors down the road as they introduce you to other professionals (and maybe even potential employers!) in the field.

Who should I look for to be my mentor?

Having an abundance of professionals with more experience than you on college campuses, it is important to narrow down your search for the right mentor for you.

“When we help our college women build the confidence they need to network and build powerful relationships we tell them to seek mentors that are powerful, bold and consistently stepping into her personal power,” explains Rachael Bozsik. Bozsik is the CEO and founder of The Brand Girls, a workshop and sisterhood focused on empowering the next generation of women. “There is such power in modeling (mimicking the behavior and the actions of someone you would like to be like someday) you will want to seek a mentor who you admire and want to follow closely in their footsteps.

Thomas Dezell, author and professional career advisor, recommends pursuing a mentorship with “an individual who is established and knowledgeable in a field you want to pursue a career in. Ideally, he or she should be at a supervisory level, having advanced in that field and seen others who have also done so.” With such first- and second- hand experience, the mentor can give insight into what skills or experience are most valued in said field.

What qualities should I look for in a mentor?

In addition to experience, there are certain characteristics that can make someone a good mentor. “Above all, a mentor should be someone with whom you feel comfortable having a conversation,” explains Zito. “If you’re overly intimidated by that person’s job title or experience level, then you’ll feel awkward talking to them, let alone asking important questions about next steps in your career search.”

Try to email or meet with several mentor candidates to feel out if your personalities, values, and ways of interacting are a good match.

Where can I go to find a mentor?

With a schedule full of classes, a job, extracurriculars, weekly errands and, oh yeah, having a social life, adding “find a mentor” to the to-do list can seem daunting. But many potential mentors can be found working at the places you go to every day!

“I made an appointment at my school’s Career and Academic Planning Office to have my resume reviewed. The advisor I met with noticed my psychology major and mentioned she had just talked to a professor starting a research lab the next semester in a field I was interested in pursuing,” said Jenny, a recent graduate from James Madison University. “I probably never would have heard of this opportunity or professor without that meeting, and I ended up working with him for my next three years of college. He assisted in re-defining my passions and opened doors for other experiences down the road.”

Mentors can be found in the classroom in the form of graduate and teacher assistants, or professors who followed a career path you’re interested in pursuing. Many students with on- or off-campus jobs find a mentor in a boss or older co-worker.

In addition, you can join extracurricular activities, professional organizations or school-organized mentorship programs, as well as attend networking events and seminars to meet professionals that you may want to connect with later on.  “Another plus about finding potential mentors through associations is that they can focus on advising you on ways to enhance your career toward your field,” says Dezell, who believes this approach gives a more comprehensive, holistic outlook. “A mentor within the company you work at, while very beneficial, is more likely to advise you on how you can advance your career to the benefit of that company.”

Don’t hesitate to reach out to advisors specific to your major who may be able to guide your search for a mentor by suggesting certain professors to meet with or associations (think your school’s business fraternity, or pre-professional health clubs) to become a member of.

How do I ask someone to be my mentor?

Now that you’ve found someone you’re interested in forming a mentorship with, the big question is how you officially start this relationship.

“You should never formally "ask" someone "Will you be my mentor?" recommends Bozsik. “You want this relationship to feel powerful on both sides not an obligation to the individual.” Instead, the best approach is to ask the potential mentor if they have some time to meet with you and answer a few questions. Bozsik advises asking the individual out to coffee or lunch, and start by learning about their past/current role while showing you’ve done your research and making connections between their path and the path you hope to take. When ending this meeting, it is imperative to “have a call to action - create a plan to meet again or how you will continue the conversation. We tell our college clients at The Brand Girls to create a networking excel document where they track their conversations, dates and notes - you should be in touch with your potential mentors at a minimum of every other month.”

While it may seem intimidating, confusing or just like extra work, college campuses are chockfull of potential mentors and opportunities to meet them. Having a mentor during your college career provides unique guidance and advice when facing those all too important (and sometimes difficult) decisions. You’ll be reaping the benefits of this relationship long after graduation, eventually thanking your college self for putting yourself out there and creating such an important relationship.

Awkwafina, the First Asian Woman to Host 'SNL' in More Than 18 Years, Honors Lucy Liu During Opening Monologue

“Saturday Night Live” host Awkwafina paid a touching tribute to actress Lucy Liu in her opening monologue of the show, thanking Liu, the first Asian woman to ever host the show, for “opening the door.”

Awkwafina shared a memory of standing in line as a young girl, as her “idol,” Liu, was set to host the show that night. The “Crazy Rich Asians” actress, then an 11-year-old named Nora Lum from Queens, had traveled to Manhattan to wait outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza that night, The Huffington Post reports.

“I was a kid, and I didn’t have a ticket, so I knew that I wasn’t getting in,” Awkwafina recalled. “I just wanted to be near the building. I remember how important that episode was for me, and how it totally it changed what I thought was possible for an Asian-American woman.”

The audience cheered, acknowledging the significance of the moment for the visibly moved host.

“Standing here tonight is a dream I never thought would come true,” she continued. “So thank you, Lucy, for opening the door. I wasn’t able to make it into the building back then, but 18 years later, I’m hosting the show.”

Shouting up to the rafters, Awkwafina said, “I love you, Lucy Liu! Be my friend!”

Awkwafina, only the second woman to ever host “SNL,” was also part of another major breakthrough with the hit “Crazy Rich Asians,” the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an almost entirely Asian cast, The Washington Post reports.

The actress said she had cried while viewing the film, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I watched ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ and not even at the sad parts, I cried. And I’ve watched Asian-American kids come out of screenings and they’re crying. We’re out there and we exist.”

During her monologue, Awkwafina proclaimed she was “just your average Asian trumpet player-turned-rapper-turned-actress, very stereotypical,” and joked about people’s assumptions of her, which had more to do with fame rather than race.

“I’m actually from New York. I grew up in Queens. My dad still lives there,” she said. “People assume my dad has an accent — and he does. He sounds like Donald Trump, because they’re both old guys from Queens.”

Her “Crazy Rich Asian” costars applauded her performance, and thanked her for “kicking that door wide open.”

“Thank YOU, @awkwafina, for kicking that door wide open,” Ken Jeong tweeted.

Congratulations to Awkwafina for a great performance on “SNL,” and thank you for helping to further break down the barriers and promote inclusivity in the entertainment industry.

How to Throw the Most Epic Halloween Party

0

The most iconic holiday of the year is finally here! *pumps fist* It’s time to take a break from midterms, pick up a pumpkin spice latte, and start focusing on the only thing worth living for this semester: Halloween. Sure, you might be too old to trick-or-treat and passing out candy in a university town doesn’t really happen, BUT celebrating Halloween during college is a ride.

To get everyone in the spooky spirit, this year we’ve partnered with Charmed to help you host an epic Halloween party in five easy steps. (BTW, you can catch the premiere of the new series Sunday, October 14 at 9/8c on The CW.) From the crazy costumes to the endless supply of chocolate, Halloween parties are all-around Instagram-worthy and sure to be one of the most memorable events in your friend group. Below is everything you need to make your party a hit!

1. Make your apartment festive AF

It’s not a Halloween party without ~atmosphere~, and whether your theme is spooky-cute or just plain spooky, stocking up on decorations is required. While hosting a party in your dorm or apartment might mean space is limited, even just a few pumpkins and string lights can amp up the ambiance.

Here are the most popular decorations found at Halloween soirées (and you can pick or skip depending on your budget and amount of space):

  • Stretchable spider webs
  • Tea-light candles
  • Pumpkins
  • Fall leaves garland
  • Orange and black balloons
  • Black cauldrons
  • Skeletons or miscellaneous bones
  • Hanging bats
  • Tombstones
  • Fog machine
  • Strobe lights
  • Themed tableware and drinkware

2. Bump a Halloween playlist

Now is the time to live your DJ dreams. I mean, how often can you spin the “Monster Mash” IRL and have it be acceptable?

For the best Halloween music lineup, we recommend going with classic, cool songs like “Werewolves in London” and “Thriller” interspersed with pop-culture throwbacks from childhood that all your friends will love to geek out listening to (“This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Ghostbusters theme).

If you don’t have the time to build a playlist yourself, we’ve made one here for your partying pleasure:

3. SNACKS

As a holiday famed for bite-sized Reese’s and those little candy pumpkins everyone secretly loves, snacks are a given at the ultimate Halloween party. You have a few serving routes to choose from here:

  1. Go all in and whip up cute and creative Halloween appetizers and desserts, ranging from hot dog mummies to skeleton cupcakes.
  2. Buy a bunch of candy and chips, and call it a day – because college students will NEVER complain about Doritos.
  3. If you’re working with a small budget, make your party a potluck and require each of your friends to bring a dish to share.

Top off the treat assortment with a themed Halloween cocktail or mocktail, and you’ve got yourself a celebration.

4. Pick a costume theme

It’s a Halloween party – this is the one events where your friends simply CANNOT show up in leggings and a sweatshirt. To elevate your party’s general vibe, ask attendees to wear a costume and fully embrace the mood. The best way to do this is to pick a costume “theme” your guests should adhere to, i.e. 2018-relevant costumes, Disney costumes, masquerade, etc. Not only will this make for a super cute group pic, but it feels way mores spirited than sitting around eating candy corn in the same clothes you wear every day.

5. Organize games and activities

Halloween games aren’t just for kids – there’s a ton of different activities adults can enjoy too, mainly because of the sheer nostalgia factor. Think: bobbing for apples, having a “Monster Mash” dance party, playing scary movie trivia, carving pumpkins – anything your guests can engage with when they’re not chatting or snacking.

Are you feeling inspired? Follow the steps above to host a Halloween party perfect for any college group, pretty soon you’ll have a yearly tradition of throwing the ultimate spooky bash at your place. Don’t forget to tune-in to the series premiere of Charmed on Sunday, October 14 at 9/8c only on The CW to help the creative juices flowing. We can’t wait to see what else you come up with!

How to Turn a Mediocre Job Into the Job of Your Dreams

0
0

It should come as no surprise that most students don't graduate college and immediately land their dream job. Even if you know exactly which field you want to go into and you’re lucky enough to get your foot in the door soon after having graduated, you’re probably not at the level you’d like to be just yet. For others, it might be less about upward mobility and more about shifting between different industries while searching for the perfect fit. The truth is there’s a lot of grunt work that goes into securing your dream job; you might even have to create the role yourself! So, how do you turn a less-than-average job into one that you’re beyond passionate about? We spoke with a few experts who shared their most memorable lessons on the road to success.

1. Abandon those negative thoughts about your job

If you’ve already convinced yourself that your current job is less than mediocre, there’s probably no saving it. You’ll be unmotivated to do a good job and, worse, uninterested in making the most of your situation. Rather than focus on all the ways your job could be better suited for you, try to think of how you could actually make it work in your favor. If it helps, make a list of all the positive things you are already gaining from it, for example, having access to notable connections, making long-lasting friendships or even something as simple as having a short commute. Ngoc Nguyen, a leadership coach at career-coaching company Ama La Vida, says, “You have to want make the situation better for yourself; it won’t happen on its own. Recognize it for what it is, but turn your focus toward what you could still get out of the experience by allowing yourself to see it as a building block to your ultimate career.”

For many, the first job they land out of college is just a starter job but it is far from insignificant. “Not liking it [at first] is normal, what you do with it makes all the difference,” Nguyen adds. This is where you’ll learn some of the most valuable lessons about what it’s really like to be in the workforce and what the day-to-day happenings of someone who works in your field are like. A positive attitude often translates into a positive experience; if you give it your absolute best, soon you’ll find that you enjoy excelling in your new role and your excellent performance won’t go unnoticed forever. Working your way up the ranks to your dream job is not uncommon; in fact, it’s a rite of passage you won’t want to miss out on. If we’ve learned anything from our new favorite show 'The Bold Type,' it’s that the more you enjoy your job (at any level), the more you get out of the experience.

2. Learn more about the things you don’t like to do and why

Sometimes, a job can seem unappealing simply because you don’t understand it or you aren’t confident enough in your abilities to nail it. We tend to favor the things we are naturally good at because we enjoy the sense of instant gratification it brings; it feels good not to have to work too hard at something and still be praised for a job well done.  When things don’t come easy to us, we can have a difficult time mustering up any enthusiasm toward them. Nguyen says, “There will be parts of your job you don’t like but you’ll have to do anyway. Why not commit yourself to learn and understand the task you’re doing instead of focusing on how much you don’t want to do it?” For example, you might think a job in sales isn’t for you because you’ve never been much of a businessperson; but your perception could change once you realize that a sales-oriented job is really more about building relationships than it is about selling products or services.

The more you understand why you’re doing what you’re doing, the more you’ll be inclined to appreciate the process. There’s always more to learn about your job and your company even if you’ve already been there for a while. Make an effort to be more inquisitive about why things are done a certain way at your company and how your seemingly small role plays a part in the larger scheme of things.

3. Be nice to your coworkers without expecting anything in return

Nobody likes to work in a hostile environment. Dread your days at the office (or wherever you work) less by fostering genuinely positive relationships with the people around you. Too often, networking advice focuses on how other people can help you now or later on in your career. The truth is it pays to be nice just for the sake of being nice. Like you, your coworkers may be feeling overwhelmed or uninspired and greeting them with a smile or offering to help out with a large project will boost morale all around. You are more likely to enjoy your job if your environment is a welcoming and supportive one; if it isn’t, don’t be afraid to incite some positive change simply by helping others willingly and often.

4. Find a mentor whose career roadmap looks like one you would enjoy

Once you begin growing your professional network, you’ll probably find yourself drawn to those whose jobs you admire. It’s always a good idea to cultivate relationships with people who’ve been where you are now, not solely for professional gain but also for companionship based on your mutual interests. Brianna McGurran, career and education expert at NerdWallet, says, “Identify someone at your company who is really killing it or who has a role you'd like to work toward and invite her out to coffee or lunch. Prepare thoughtful questions in advance about how she got to where she is, and remember to offer your assistance with any projects that she needs help with and that you can learn from.”

McGurran also recommends taking advantage of any formal mentorship programs at your company or within your industry. If one doesn’t exist, that’s the perfect opportunity for you to start one, she says. Maybe you’d like to break into young adult book publishing; a good idea would be to launch your own YA book club. This way, you’ll get to read more of the books you love while networking with other professionals already in the field. You would be surprised how willing more successful professionals are to share their journeys with you.

5. Seek out your niche and find a way to work it into your daily routine

Some people know by the time they’re six years old that when they grow up, they want to be a pediatric surgeon or a college professor or an actress. For them, a clear path is mapped out: a list of steps they should follow to land themselves right where they need to be. But the answers aren’t always that obvious; sometimes, it takes a few rounds of trial and error to really find your place in the working world. A good way to tell where your true interests lie is to look at what you do in your free time or where your mind wanders off to when you’re not swamped with work.

As you continue to develop your passions, Shea Drake, business analyst at Verizon, recommends finding ways to work them into your day-to-day tasks. Maybe you really enjoy travel photography but you currently work as a marketing representative. Look for opportunities to put your eye for photography to good use, like selecting a few amazing shots for an upcoming newsletter you’re working on. According to Drake, not only will this keep you interested at work but it will also let your supervisors and coworkers know of any hidden talents you have that might be beneficial to your company. Karson Humiston, CEO of Vangst—a leading staffing agency for the cannabis industry—adds, “Your current position may not be your dream job, but there is no reason you can’t bring your ideas and specialties to senior employees [at the appropriate times].” Who knows? Soon, you might become the go-to person for whatever it is you truly love to do!

Working at a job that you don’t love can be mentally draining, but you shouldn’t be too discouraged. Instead, find ways to make it work for you. Mara Hyman, a recent graduate of USC, says that every job is a stepping-stone toward your dream job. “Even if your first job out of college is dull, or worse, something you dread, there is always something good that can come from it,” she says. Perhaps, you’ll learn a new skill that you can add to your resume or that will help you at a more suitable job later on. Perhaps, you’ll find yourself loving your current job more and more as you learn to appreciate all the lessons and opportunities it has to offer. If you're already a diligent worker, all you need now is a little passion. Don’t give up on your dreams, even if they’re constantly evolving and even if they seem far away.

How They Got There: Krystal Vaquerano & Marie Arlet, Co-Founders of Shea Brand

Name: Krystal Vaquerano and Marie Arlet

Job Title & Description: Creative Director, COO

College & Major: Virginia Commonwealth University

Website:SheaBrand.com

Twitter: Sheabrandbk

Instagram:@sheabrand

Whether you care to admit it or not, we're all obsessed with skincare because, well, skincare isn't just about pampering our skin—it can also be an essential part of our self-care routine. However, your witch hazel spray and moisturizer can do more than quench your pores and mental health. Skincare can also become your career. Naturally, we talked to two of Shea Brand's co-founders, Krystal Vaquerano and Marie Arlet, to figure out how we can transition our skincare fascination from our bathroom vanity to our W-4s.

If you aren't familiar with Shea Brand, the company creates eczema-friendly skincare products (which also help soothe psoriasis flare-ups, from personal experience). The only thing more notable about the company is that three friends founded the company: Marie, Krystal and Austin. (Because who says you can mix business and friendship?) Beyond talking about how they start Shea Brand, Krystal and Marie talk about how they started out their professional careers in a completely different industry (which gives us major hope because we're currently majoring in changing our majors).

Her Campus: What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Krystal, Creative Director: My day-to-day consists of waking up to a cup of coffee while reading emails, which tend to deal with factory inquiries regarding production. Depending on the day and the number of orders we have, I’ll be fulfilling orders from our website and getting those shipped out. Once that is all completed, I tend to work on things more directly related to my role as Creative Director. So, that means finishing any label designs and posting on Instagram. My favorite task is designing packaging for new products. Marie and I both look up inspiration and then give our own interpretation of that. I use that as a guide for the final designs. I always keep our Shea Brand aesthetic in mind, of course, when designing to ensure any new product seamlessly aligns with our existing offerings.

That said, each day differs and we’re a very hands-on team. We try to help each other as much as possible, so Marie will help me with design and Austin and I will help her put together large orders. As a small team, we necessitate having all hands on deck at all times.

Marie, COO: My day always starts out with my favorite activity: walking my dog, Milou. He’s a little rescue who loves sleeping in, so I wake him up gently and carry him to the dog park where I watch him play with bigger dogs for about an hour. This quiet time in the morning allows me to ease into the day and bond with Milou, which is incredibly grounding. I then head home to feed Milou (he always comes first), make my morning coffee and read over emails. Recently we’ve been getting a lot of new orders from boutiques all over the US, so managing orders, inventory and fulfillment has been a big part of my everyday routine, but there really isn’t such a thing as a 'typical day.' Some days, I am helping out Krystal with design work, other days I am crunching numbers, doing taxes and finances, or I’ll be testing out some new formulas in our “innovation room.” The work keeps us on our toes because no two days are the same.

HC: What is the best part of your job?

Krystal, Creative Director: I would say the best part of my job is being able to dictate the creative direction of our brand. It has always been a dream of mine to have my own company where I could have the creative liberty to make a beautiful and positive impact. That is what I do with Shea Brand, and I have amazing teammates that trust my vision and ideas. It truly is a blessing. There are moments I forget that this once was a goal of mine and I am here doing it! And that is AMAZING. From time to time, I have to remind myself of that.

Marie, COO: Hands down getting messages from customers who’ve used our products and tell us they’ve helped them. Working for yourself and having a more flexible schedule is great, but knowing that what you are producing is helping people has got to be the most rewarding part of the job. Recently we heard from someone with bad arthritis on their hands. They told us that our product helped ease the pain and that they hadn’t felt that good in years.

HC: What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

Krystal, Creative Director: I went to school for Fashion Design and assumed I would be working in the fashion industry all my life (so naive). My first job was at this contemporary brand called, Tocca. It was an amazing experience; it was a really small team, just 5 of us. The head designer was this super eccentric woman. I learned a lot at that job, I dabbled in things from pattern-making and Photoshop to doing hand illustrations for the team. It was very busy, but it was a great experience, which I believe I found on Craigslist (always worth checking when trying to find a job in any industry).

Marie, COO: My first entry-level job was actually not in the skincare field. Before Shea Brand, I worked in fashion in NYC and I got my first job by walking into the office of one of my favorite fashion brands at the time without an appointment and announcing that I wanted to work there. Everyone in the small office (there was probably only 20 people at the time) stopped what they were doing and stared at me until someone stood up, walked over to me and grabbed my resume. I left feeling excited and incredibly nervous but didn’t hear back from them for two months. I thought for sure I had scared them off and that there was a picture of me with their doorman saying, 'DO NOT LET THIS PERSON IN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES,' but one day I got an email asking me to come in. I was told during the interview process that the move I pulled was bold and that they remembered me when they had an opening. I got offered the job after two interviews and got to negotiate my salary for the first time (always negotiate your salary and don’t be scared to — it’s the right thing to do!).

HC: What words of wisdom (well-known quotes, an anecdote from your boss) do you find most valuable?

Krystal, Creative Director: I would say the best anecdote I was given from a boss was that it is okay to make mistakes and we will continue to make mistakes, that is just a part of the process.

Marie, COO: My old boss at Macy’s would always say, 'Put on your boxing gloves and kill ‘em with kindness.' I love that and use it every day.

HC: What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

Krystal, Creative Director: I would say that the most surreal moment of my career was hearing so many people at our first two trade shows say how much they love our packaging and branding. It was so incredible to hear that in person.

Marie, COO: Having one of our products featured on Buzzfeed. I’m on Buzzfeed quite a lot, so it was a special one!

HC: What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

Krystal, Creative Director: Someone who is willing to learn and doesn’t think they know everything. That is extremely important.

Marie, COO: Someone who is positive, hard-working and aligns with our values.

HC: What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

Krystal, Creative Director: I would say, don’t be too hard on yourself. Give yourself time to be young, and enjoy it. Of course, work hard and find positions that will direct you in the path you would like to be in, but don’t beat yourself up if you're not there right away.

Marie, COO: Go work several jobs and, if possible, in different departments. Ask tons and tons of questions and just be a sponge and then, when the time is right, and you are financially able to do it — do it! Give your business at least 3 years to become something.

HC: What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

Krystal, Creative Director: I love seeing what type of internships people have done, and with who. It’s always so fun seeing where and who people have worked with.

Marie, COO: I love the skills sections. Tell me about what sports you do or if you bake or cook or like going on hikes. I love fun facts about people — have you ever eaten a whole pack of Oreo's under 10 minutes? I want to know!

HC Wake-Up Call: FLOTUS Wraps First Solo Trip, NY Limo Crash Leaves 20 Dead & Israeli PM's Wife on Trial for Fraud

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

First Lady Melania Trump Wraps First Solo Trip to Africa

Melania Trump concluded her first solo international trip as first lady by saying her visit to four African nations was meant to send a message that “we care.”

Mrs. Trump’s trip to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt thrust the usually very private first lady into the international spotlight, away from the bitter and contentious debate over her husband’s Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh.

The first lady’s trip marks a positive point in the Trump administration’s relationship with Africa, which has been negatively impacted by some of the president disparaging remarks about some of the African nations in the past. Trump, in a meeting with with lawmakers in January, grew frustrated over the bipartisan immigration plan, asking why they would want people from Haiti, Africa and other “s---hole countries” coming into the United States, ABC News reports. Mrs. Trump said that her hosts during her visit did not bring up her husband’s comments.

“We care, and we want to show the world that we care, and I’ve partnered and am working with USAID. And that’s what I want to share, that we care,” Trump told reporters at her final stop in Egypt.

The first lady called her trip “unforgettable” and “incredible.”

Mrs. Trump’s trip was largely focused on children in keeping with her “Be Best” initiative, and sought to highlight the positive impact of U.S. foreign aid to the continent.

During her trip, the first lady was welcomed by young girls bearing flowers and the first ladies of each country greeting her as she arrived, ABC News reports.

In Ghana, Mrs. Trump visited mothers and children in a hospital and laid a wreath at the “door of no return” in Cape Coast Castle, where kidnaped Africans were held before being placed onto ships to be sent to the Americas to become slaves. A photo of the first lady holding a baby boy during her hospital visit went viral.

Greeted by a choir of singing students, Mrs. Trump visited a primary school in Malawi that benefits from USAID’s literacy program.

“Thank you for having me here and thank you for a beautiful warm welcome,” she said at the school in Malawi, “I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that the United States is providing to the children. And thank you for educating them to ‘Be Best’ – be their best and to grow up into educated adults for generations to come.”

In Nairobi, Kenya, Mrs. Trump fed baby elephants, where one playfully, but forcefully nudged her, and visited an orphanage.

On her final stop of the tour, Mrs. Trump traveled to Egypt and viewed the pyramids and the Great Sphinx.

Her outfit during her time in Egypt, however, drew lots of attention, including whether she intended to draw attention to gender equality by wearing a tie and pants.

When asked about her fashion choices by a reporter, Mrs. Trump said, “I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear.”

New York Limo Crash Leaves 20 Dead

A picturesque, upstate New York community was left in shock after a “horrific” crash of a limousine left 20 people dead.

State Police spokesman Christopher Fiore said the limousine failed to stop at an intersection in Schoharie, New York, and slammed into a parked SUV. Eighteen people in the limousine, including the driver, and two pedestrians were killed as a result of the accident.

via Tom Heffernan Sr. - AP

“Everyone inside the limousine was killed,” Fiore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said the accident was the biggest U.S. transportation accident since 2009.

The limousine, a 2001 Ford Excursion, ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

According to USA Today, the crash took place next to the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe, which is in an area popular with tourists during the fall season. Owners shared their condolences on Facebook, and said they were open on Sunday to share “hugs” with the community.

“This is a wonderful, small-knit community of people who care about each other,” Liz Gallup, who works at the store and has lived nearby for almost 60 years, told USA TODAY. “People are coming in, they are hugging, they are sharing.”

“As you may be aware, there was a horrific accident in front of our business today,” the Apple Barrel said in a Facebook post. “We hope you will come and share your smiles, love, friendship and hugs with us.”

Israeli Prime Minister’s Wife on Trial for Fraud

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife appeared in court Sunday for the start of her trial over alleged fraud and breach of trust, again drawing attention to the scandals plaguing Israel’s prime minister and his family.

via The Associated Press

Sara Netanyahu, according to ABC News, has been charged with overspending approximately $100,000 on private celebrity chefs at the prime minister’s official residence when there was already a full-time chef on staff.

Transcripts from police investigations leaked to and released by the media disclosed that Mrs. Netanyahu often complains about the quality of the food at the prime minister’s residence and uses expletives to describe the staff. She has long faced allegations of abusive behavior and extravagant spending. According to ABC News, former employees have accused the prime minister’s wife of mistreatment, as well as charging the state for her lavish tastes.

The indictment states that Mrs. Netanyahu acted “to circumvent the rules and conditions” governing the prime minister’s official residence “in order to fraudulently obtain state funding for various expenses for the accused and her family that were not supposed to be financed in this manner.”

Her lawyers have argued that she was oblivious to the regulations and the meals were ordered by an assistant and served to visiting dignitaries.

The prime minister has slammed the indictment, calling the allegations against his wife “baseless and delusional.” The family has denied any sort of wrongdoing and claims to be victims of a political witch hunt by the media.

If convicted, Mrs. Netanyahu could face up to five years in prison.

Israeli police have also recommended indiciting Netanyahu for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in two separate cases.

What to look out for…

5 Things To Consider Before Committing to a New Apartment

0
0

Securing your first apartment has long been considered one of the major milestones of adulthood. And while this big step should be considered fun, between confusing AF rental agreements and an unrealistic idea of what actual apartments look like (thanks, Friends), your apartment hunt can quickly go from heck yeah to oh no

While you may jump forward and start thinking about how you are going to decorate your new space, it’s important to keep your head in the game during your apartment search. You may not be focused on factors like amenities, location or money right now, but three months later, when a problem arises, you could end up in a sticky situation. So, as you search Pinterest for decor ideas, here are five things you should consider before committing to an apartment.

1. Location

Location, location, location is the most important factor in real estate – and there’s a reason for that. Margit Brandt, a Relocation Specialist with Next Step Realty, agrees that location is everything and that you need to decide where you want to be.

“Specifically, in NYC, pick a location that works for you—close to work, close to friends, close to the things you like to do (exercise classes, restaurants, clubs),” Brandt says. “There are a lot of things in life that are hard—do not make where you live hard.  You are where you live a lot of the time so make sure it is a place you enjoy!” This may seem like common sense, but in the midst of an intense apartment search, it becomes easy to forget this simple concept. Finding an apartment in your ideal location can also offer additional benefits related to your commute and transportation.

“Especially for students, [location] is important because finding parking and paying for parking passes can be a hassle,” says Taylor Mickel, a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The bottom line is location is one of the most important things to consider, as it can either complicate or simplify your life.

2. Roommates

Even after leaving campus, many people choose to continue to live with roommates for a variety of reasons. Some like the company, and others like the financial benefit (read: cheaper rent). And even though more people means more fun, it also means more ideas about what constitutes a “good” apartment.

“When apartment hunting with roommates, you have to keep in mind there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen and you have to be flexible in order to find the right spot for everybody,” Brandt says. “After relocating thousands at Next Step over the last five years, we have learned you have to have a list of what your ‘nonnegotiable’ are versus ‘like to have,’ and our job is to get you most of those things.”

Before beginning your search with your roommates, take the time to talk to each other. Each person should make a list of things they absolutely need, as well as things that are deal breakers. If one of you has a car, parking near the apartment is a must have. If you all don’t drive, you’ll need a place close to public transportation or within walking distance. But features like a gym or pool, may not be necessary, especially if you have access to these amenities elsewhere.

Once you have your list, you can negotiate with each other to make a list of everything you need in your apartment. And while this may not be fun, there is a bright side to making it work with your roommate. You should also take time to consider what will happen once you all move into the apartment. Having early discussions about your individual schedules, how chores will be split and what your policy on guests is, will help prevent headaches in the future.

And if having a roommate is starting to sound stressful, make sure to focus on the main benefit. “The benefit here is you have a live-in support system with roommates for your first home,” says Brandt.  What can beat that?

4 Questions To Ask Yourself When Looking For An Apartment

3. Money

If only we could live in a world where money isn’t an issue. But until that happens, you’re always going to have to consider how much this new apartment is going to cost you.

Rent is the big-ticket item here, but additional costs such amenities and utilities can move an apartment from affordable to out of budget very quickly.

And while you may be looking for that perfect, aesthetically pleasing and oh-so fancy abode, Taylor says that just because something is nice, doesn’t make it affordable.

“When looking at what’s included, it’s important to know if a parking pass, water or gas and sewage [are] included in the rent price,” says Taylor.

But inexpensive places can also have hidden costs. Your rent itself may be dirt cheap, but if you add on utilities, maintenance fees, parking and transportation, you may end up paying even more than you would at a more expensive location.

Ask your realtor, broker or landlord to help you evaluate every single cost you may have to pay—no matter how small. Seeing all the numbers in black and white can help you make the decision about whether or not you can truly afford the apartment.

4. Amenities

If you are shelling out money for an apartment, take time to think about what you need to have in a space, whether it is a state-of-the-art gym or a relaxing pool and hot tub.

“The amenities you look for are of course specific to your interests,” says Brandt.  “One popular ask people have when moving to New York is outdoor space either private or shared.  A beautiful roof-deck or a gym would obviously to most be a huge bonus! Some of the luxury buildings in NYC often have pools, sauna steam room (great in winter time), golf simulators, and even Turkish baths.” Apartments that aren’t in major cities may have more practical amenities like a community building for hosting gatherings, a game room or a large outdoor patio that may fit better with the recent grad lifestyle.

And apartment buildings are more than just a residence—they’re a community! So, when you are searching for a place, make sure to think about whether or not the building will give you opportunities to connect with your neighbors. Brandt says that this is a component many buildings are now emphasizing. “Many now are creating community activities such as wine night, sushi tasting night or barbecue night in an effort to get their tenants to meet one another within the community. To find a building that offers this is really great especially in a new city like New York!”

It may seem trivial now but choosing a building that you can turn into a home can make your apartment much nicer.

4 Benefits of Moving Back Home After College

5. Safety

Home sweet home isn’t that sweet if you don’t feel safe in your new residence. Even if an apartment checks off all of the boxes, if you don’t feel 100 percent safe in the building or neighborhood, you may need to continue on with your search.

But many buildings do place an emphasis on safety and security. “Safety is of course important anywhere you are but when moving out on your own for the first time you want it to be a place you are comfortable in and feel safe,” Brandt says. “In New York, a doorman is a common ask people have for their first apartment.”

If you are not looking in a major city, a doorman may not be at the top of your list, but be sure to look at whether or not your apartment is in a gated community, requires key card access to get in the building or limits who can enter the building at different times of day. All of these practices can help make your apartment as safe as possible. Other factors to consider are if there is a private parking garage to protect your car, if there is a security service on call as well as how things like packages and mail will be protected.

Even though you should consider all of these important factors during your apartment search, make sure to have fun. If you approach the process with a clear idea of what you want, you’ll find your dream apartment in no time!

Taylor Swift Breaks Her Reputation For Staying Silent About Politics & Endorses Tennessee Democrats

Pop star phenom, Taylor Swift, made a rare and bold move when she posted a statement on Instagram this weekend denouncing Tennessee Republican candidate, Marsha Blackburn. Swift criticized the candidate's stance on women’s rights, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community and her voting record, CNN reports.

The singer has by her own account been mum on the topic of discussing politics and her political views, but as her posts states, “due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now."

With the mid-term elections just weeks away, Swift’s used her post to not only call out Blackburn but to endorse Democrat Phil Bredesen.

"Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn," she wrote. "Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives."

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Bredesen served as governor of Tennessee, the state where Swift is registered to vote, from 2003 to 2011, and in a tweet he thanked Swift for her “kind words.”

Swift’s lengthy post not only urged young fans to get out and vote but to “educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.” Swift also used the post as an opportunity to call out the “systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color,” and included instructions on how to register to vote.

She wrote, “So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count.”

So call it what you want, but Swift is using her platform and her voice to do some good and call for change.

5 Ways to Get Closer to Your Sorority Sisters

0

Rushing a sorority is thrilling. You run home to over a hundred new sisters that will become your best friends for the rest of your college life and beyond. That being said, it can be extremely overwhelming and hard to get to know every single one of your sisters. However, besides the typical grab-a-dates and socials, there are plenty of other ways to bond with your sorority sisters on a daily basis. The more you put into sorority life, the more you get out of it. It is possible to get to know everyone and make those connections that will last a lifetime.

1. Do recruitment

Recruiting new students as sisters includes two weeks of long nights and endless step-clapping. Many people try to get out of doing recruitment, and I will admit, it’s not for everyone. However, recruitment week works wonders in regard to bonding with your sisters. You will eat, sleep and breath your sorority all week, but at the end of the day, you have your sisters by your side after all the singing, conversing and stress. Recruiting may even bring you closer to sisters you had never met before or never thought you would become friends with. Trust me, it’s worth it.

2. Go to sisterhood studies

Most sororities have sisterhood studies, or study sessions at the house, where you can go and hang out with your sisters while preparing for an exam or working on assignments. Stephanie Huynh, a sophomore at Lehigh University, mentioned, "We're all trying to succeed in school while maintaining our other commitments, and studying with each other allows you to spend more time with each other while being productive." You can meet other sisters in your field of study that can help you through classes. Sometimes, you’ll be lucky enough to find a sister that has already taken a course you’re in and can help you prepare. Don’t be afraid to ask older sisters about recommended courses and professors.

3. Stay active in group chats

Whether it’s a Facebook page, GroupMe or WhatsApp group, staying up to date with conversations will ensure that you don’t miss out on an event or opportunity to hang out with your sisters. Ashley Diggins, a sophomore at the Ohio State University, says, “Don't be afraid to talk in your sorority GroupMe/group chat/whatever your sorority has for that even if it's just little things. I one time asked for advice on a cover letter of mine and one girl I had never really talked to messaged me about it, and we got to talking about other things and are now good friends. And if your sorority doesn't have a group chat set one up ASAP.” It’s the little things such as making a post in a group chat that can bring you closer with sisters you weren’t close with before.

4. Go on fates

Fates are friend dates, and to be honest, they are the best kind of dates. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone in your sorority and ask them to grab dinner or see a movie, even if you’ve never talked to them before. Think about how happy you would be if someone reached out to you—it’s not weird, it’s flattering. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up meeting your best friend that way.

5. Exercise together

Most campuses have complimentary gym access, so heading to the gym with your sisters is a fun and easy way to not only bond, but also stay in shape. Rhiana Raymundo, a junior at the University of Central Florida, recommends taking group exercising classes together for fun. Yoga, Pilates and Zumba are great classes to try out with your sisters.

There are plenty of unexpected ways to get the most out of your sisterhood. Don’t be shy, these girls are here to help and guide you through college, and you should do the same for them. Get to know as many sisters as you can, even if it’s uncomfortable at first. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

How to Make Sure Your Halloween Costume Isn't Racist, Culturally Appropriative Or Insensitive

0
0

Halloween lets people express themselves, be creative, and even be someone else for a night. However, a line exists between fun and appropriate, particularly when we’re talking about respecting other people’s cultures and appearances. In recent years, you’ve probably heard lots of debates, especially during the month of October, about cultural appropriation and the questions it raises about what is okay and what is definitely not. This Halloween, follow a few basic guidelines to make sure your costumes are sensitive to everyone, and avoid any of the calamities that can follow being racist, appropriative, and insensitive.

Pause before you choose your costume.

When you’re thinking about a potential Halloween costume, take a second to think about whether it’s something possibly controversial. USA Today said that “It's an individual choice, but ask yourself if you would feel comfortable wearing it — or having your child wear it — among people from that culture. Would it feel awkward? Would you expect to be called out? Or would it be well received?”

Taking a few moments and empathizing with people who are members of other cultures can prevent misunderstandings or unintentional racism and insensitivity. Part of being sensitive is paying attention and pausing before making a decision.

Realize that every situation is a little different.

Twitter has been divided recently over whether it’s okay for parents to let their children dress up as characters from Moana. Some users believe that no one should dress up in a costume from a culture that isn’t their own. However, other users claim that Halloween costumes for children, when done tactfully, are celebrations of favorite characters rather than an intentional or unintentional mockery of an entire culture. As adults, we need to evaluate our roles and what the intentions and consequences of our costumes can be.

Keep stereotypes in check.

If your costume magnifies or centers around cultural stereotypes and preconceived notions, try something else instead. Your costume should never mimic another culture, or reinforce negative racial, religious, or sexual stereotypes. You’re definitely allowed to be creative and express yourself, but don’t limit someone else’s beliefs or culture by wearing something insensitive.

The 10 Best Halloween Costumes for 2018

0
0

2018, like every year, has produced its own unique collection of pop culture figures that have had everyone talking, from beloved movie characters to now iconic celebrities. And what better way to recall the most talked-about moments of the year than with a clever Halloween costume?

Maybe it’s time to give your well-worn cat ears or witch’s hat a break and opt for something a bit more contemporary. Here are our favorite people, characters and moments of 2018, reimagined as Halloween costumes that will have heads turning at your next spooky party.

1. Meghan Markle

We can’t start off this list without bringing up a truly historic moment: the Royal Wedding, which had us gushing about the Duchess of Sussex for weeks afterward. We couldn’t be more thrilled to see Meghan Markle join the Royal Family.

Meghan is a style icon, but her most recognizable outfit is no doubt the Givenchy wedding dress she donned on the big day. Maybe it received some mixed opinions, but we thought it was beautiful.

If you’re resourceful, try finding an affordable knockoff version of Meghan’s white boatneck gown, or if not, go for another one of Meghan’s polished looks, like this one from her first appearance as Duchess. A pencil skirt is a classic necessity that you probably already have in your closet, and that hat is totally wear-it-twice cute—plus, it’s easy to find a dupe on Amazon! You can use a safety pin to attach her royal coat of arms to your outfit, and you’re good to go—just make sure to practice your royal wave. Bonus points if you can convince your boyfriend to dress up as Prince Harry.

2. Young Donna from Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again

This summer’s Mamma Mia! sequel reminded us of our love for ABBA and reignited our deep-rooted desire to sail away to a remote Greek island and fall in love with three dreamy men. The standout shining star from this staple summer movie was Lily James, who portrayed the young version of inspiring badass Donna.

Donna’s breezy, beautiful looks are the perfect way to celebrate ’70s fashion, and the best part is that you probably already own some Donna-inspired pieces. If not, we recommend splurging on the overalls, which are probably the most recognizable of Donna’s outfits—Meryl Streep wore overalls in the first Mamma Mia! film, after all! You can find a pair pretty easily at a store like Forever 21.

Just remember, costumes don’t just involve your clothes; check out a hair tutorial to get Donna’s beachy curls, and be sure to belt out some ABBA tunes whenever you walk into a room.

3. The women of Ocean’s 8

This all-women reboot of the beloved film made headlines this summer, and we’re all about a girl gang hitting up Halloween with style. Grab your seven partners-in-crime, an all-black outfit (depending on your character, this could range from a full-on evening gown to jeans and a leather jacket, so pick whatever suits your fancy), and a pair of sunglasses. Halloween has never been easier, or cooler.

4. A member of the Dora Milaje from Black Panther

One of the biggest movie moments of this year was the premiere of Black Panther, which introduced us to the technologically advanced nation of Wakanda and Marvel’s first black superhero. As much as we love T’Challa, the undisputed badass babes of the film were definitely the Dora Milaje, AKA a highly trained team of women who serve as warriors to protect their nation. Led by Danai Gurira’s Okoye, they uphold the motto of “Wakanda forever”—and they have some pretty cool armor, too.

If you’re more into DIY-ing, you can make a Dora Milaje costume from a red shirt and thick gold jewelry. Those of you who would rather buy a pre-made costume, however, are in luck: Target sells a Dora Milaje costume. This movie is a huge step forward in representation for black women, making it perfect for a group costume. Grab some friends to wear it with you—you’ll definitely win the prize for best group costume.

5. Rose from Star Wars: The Last Jedi

While the latest installment of the Star Wars movies was technically released in 2017, this is the first Halloween since the film came out, so we’re adding this one to our list. The Last Jedi brought kindhearted maintenance tech Rose Tico, portrayed by Kelly Marie Tran, to the forefront, and cemented her as one of our favorites. After meeting Finn and going on her first big adventure, Rose becomes one of the heroes of the movie, continuing the trend of powerful female Star Wars characters, along with Daisy Ridley’s Rey and of course, Carrie Fisher’s iconic Princess Leia.

Getting Rose’s look is easy enough, since she’s all about the practical—get yourself a brown hoodie underneath a green military jacket to mimic her mechanic outfit. As for hair, tie half of it up in a haphazard ponytail and use a straightener to flip the ends of the rest out; bonus points if you fake some bangs (or already have them!). Rose is usually seen with a suspicious side-eye, too, so just practice that look a bit before you head out for the night.

6. The Carters in the “Apeshit” music video

You may not have the power to shut down the Louvre, but you can still show up looking fly with your SO as Bey and Jay in this iconic music video. All you need are matching, solid suits—one pink and one turquoise. They may not be as high-quality as the threads the Carters are rocking, but you know what they say: confidence is key.

7. Ariana Grande in the “God Is a Woman” music video

This music video was the subject of so much praise, and for good reason: Ariana’s vocals are on point, the visuals are out of this world, and the lyrics are *chef kiss* amazing. Ariana rocked a bunch of different looks in this iconic vid, but the watercolor-ish, purple makeup look is the one that has beauty gurus filming recreation tutorials.

It’s definitely going to require an artistic hand and quite a bit of patience, but you’ll be the center of attention at your Halloween party for sure. If you’re bold, you can wear nude clothing with your look, but a periwinkle or purple leotard and leggings will pass the test, too. Hey, maybe you’ll even find your own Pete Davidson on Halloween night.

8. Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

Peter Kavinsky from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before may have won all of our hearts, but it’s Lana Condor’s Lara Jean that remains the subject of our fashion envy. Anyone who loves a good '90s fashion throwback will be super into all of her looks, but we recommend going for her “first day of school” outfit: a plaid flannel, some tan shorts and high-knee socks are all necessities, but the real scene stealer is the rockin’ pair of combat boots (seriously, how could Gen make fun of those?). Oh, and don’t forget your iconic scrunchie, either! Just make sure your fake boyfriend doesn’t take it from you once you get to your Halloween party, or else you’ll never be seeing that thing again.

9. Edna Mode from The Incredibles 2

It’s been far too long since we’ve seen the return of Edna Mode to the big screen, and boy, are we glad to have her back! Edna may be all about bold fashion, but getting her look is actually quite simple: find a plain black dress, a black bob wig and some round glasses (maybe you have a pair lying around from that time you dressed up as Harry Potter?). Easy-peasy!

10. Rachel from Crazy Rich Asians

You might think it’s hard to emulate the glitz and glamor of Crazy Rich Asians in one costume, and we agree. But if you go for any look, Rachel’s light blue gown at Colin’s wedding is the way to go—and while you may not be crazy rich enough to buy a whole designer gown for Halloween, why not get a plain V-neck dress in the right color and then sew (or safety pin, if it’s a low-effort job) on some extra blue fabric, fake flowers or even tissue paper; whatever you have within reach? To complete the look, put your hair in an elegant updo, and add a rhinestone crown (even though we’re pretty sure the movie used real diamonds).

No matter which costume you choose to rock this Halloween, we have no doubt you’re going to have a blast. Get planning—the spookiest night of the year is just around the corner!
