Cecile Richards Said Ivanka Trump & Jared Kushner's Attempts To Stop Planned Parenthood From Providing Abortions Felt 'Like A Bribe'

In her new book, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards alleges that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner offered an increase in federal funding to Planned Parenthood if the organization agreed to stop providing abortion services, according to CNN

The offer happened in January of 2017, but it wasn’t until the recent release of Richards’ book, "Make Trouble: Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Finding the Courage to Lead,” that the bribe became public knowledge. People Magazine reported that Kushner told Richards that Planned Parenthood “had made a big mistake by becoming ‘political.’”

CNN detailed what Richard wrote about the incident for her book. Richards said "Jared and Ivanka were there for one reason: to deliver a political win. In their eyes, if they could stop Planned Parenthood from providing abortions, it would confirm their reputation as savvy dealmakers. It was surreal, essentially being asked to barter away women's rights for more money.”

Kushner described his ultimate goal to Richards. The goal, People reported, was “a national headline reading ‘Planned Parenthood Discontinues Abortion Services.’” Richards made it clear in her book that this would’ve never happened, but Richards described what it was like to be faced with this decision. “Honestly, it felt almost like a bribe. I know there are people who will disagree with me, and maybe I shouldn’t have just shut down the conversation, but I did what I thought was best,” Richards said.

Richards said that she met with Trump and Kushner, despite her political leanings, because "even if there was only a sliver of a chance of changing anyone's mind, I owed it to Planned Parenthood patients to at least take the meeting,” according to CNN. Richards has even gone as far to criticize Trump’s role in the administration. Richards said “If (Trump’s) job is to advocate for women, I don't think she's done a very good job. And particularly when it comes to women's rights, we need a strong advocate in this White House.”

The White House hasn't yet made a statement on these claims.

This YouTuber Created a Gorgeous Prom Dress from a $4 Thrift Store Find

The prom years may be behind us, but any extravagant occasion coming our way deserves an equally extravagant dress to wear. But a hefty price tag doesn’t have to come with a beautiful gown according to Amber Scholl, who made her own dress from a thrift store. The 24-year-old YouTuber put up a video tutorial on how she took a $4 dress and upcycled it into the prom dress of her dreams.

Essentially, Scholl bought a plain, short black dress at Good Will, then proceeded to stitch the skirt of the dress for a tighter fit. She then went to town with black feather fabric and crystal overlays (which costs a lot more than $4, so disclaimer: It didn’t actually cost only $4 to make this). The end result was stunning, with a new black dress that had a dramatic feather skirt and train, crystal bodice, and matching crystal neckpiece.

"I knew I could turn [the dress] into something fabulous! I love a blank canvas because I can just see the possibilities so clearly in my head when I look at something," Scholl told Yahoo Lifestyle. Even though the supplies took some serious spending, overall this dress cost significantly less than what you'd pay for something similar at a department store or boutique. The internet couldn't get enough of the DIY masterpiece, with the tweetabout her creation earning more than 130,000 likesand her YouTube tutorial trending worldwide.

The dress was a hit not only for its affordability, but also its customization! You can make something truly unique on your own for less money AND no one will ever have the same dress as you. Scholl certainly changed the fancy gown game and we're excited to see what other amazing pieces can arise when you get budget-friendly and creative with your style choices!

Taylor Swift's Stalker Has Finally Been Sentenced To 10 Years Of Probation

Look what you made her do. Taylor Swift has just put an end to her stalker's antics, who has just received his sentence for threatening the artist and her family, as Teen Vogue notes. This isn't the first time Swift has had to fight off creeps-do I need to bring up the radio host she took to court last year? At least she has one less to deal with now.

Frank Andrew Hoover, the 39-year-old stalker was arrested back in 2016 for stalking the singer and he is now on probation for 10 years. Though it sounds like an easy way off, Hoover has tons of restrictions, TMZ reports. Hoover will be tracked via GPS for the first year of his probation and is required to stay a mile away from Taylor and her family members. He will also have to complete random drug tests, psychological tests and substance abuse classes. He will surrender any firearms and if he violates any of these conditions, he will be immediately hauled off to jail. That will show him not to mess with her.

Hoover plead guilty to his charges, where he not only violated the protection order Swift and her family had against him, but also sent emails to Swift's father saying he would "end" them. Hoover also allegedly followed the Tay to the airport. Scary stuff, if you ask me.

Hopefully T-Swizzle will be sleeping peacefully knowing she doesn't have to worry about him anymore. It's about time.

As Parkland Students Dunked On Clear Backpacks, One Made A Powerful Statement On Period Stigma & The Tampon Tax

Just a few weeks after the “March for Our Lives” protests, the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have returned to classes after spring break. But this doesn’t mean that their political action has come to an end; instead, they’re continuing a fight that trescends the issue of gun violence -- and has even started to concern women’s health rights.

As a response to the shooting on February 14, the students of MSD are now required to bring clear backpacks to school. While this policy attempts to prevent future gun-related tragedy, students have taken to the media, especially Twitter to condone the new rule. Many commented how the new backpacks feel like an invasion of privacy, especially in a school environment with increased security and police presence.

“It feels like being punished,” senior Isabelle Robinson told CNN. “It feels like jail, being checked every time we go to school.”

Sophomore Daniel Bishop commented on his disappointment in the government as legal action, even post-march, seems weak against the prevention of gun violence.

“There’s still that sense of melancholy, because what’s going to happen from this?” Bishop said. “It’s not like there was a magical bill that was passed that fixed all the things after the march. That didn't happen.

“I mean, no one feels safe,” he said. “Who feels safe in Parkland, Florida? No one.”

In the midst of terror, grief, and frustration, one of the students has taken the issue to focus on women’s health. Cameron Kasky, a co-founder of the “March For Our Lives” campaign, filled his backpack with tampons in an effort to demonstrate the pressure of the newly-enforced transparency.

His selfie was followed by a reflective Twitter message illustrating his newfound awareness after attending school with the filled backpack.

Kasky’s efforts have been applauded by female communities, especially concerning the time-old period stigma and the debate on the “tampon tax”, which taxes feminine hygiene products as luxuries rather than the necessities they are.

And while it’s just one backpack in the sea of a school that has been changed forever, we applaud Kasky’s efforts in a time of political inaction and need. Thank you, Cameron.

A Great White Shark Followed Australian Police & It's 100 Percent Nightmare Fuel

Jaws 4, anyone? On Tuesday, Apr. 3, a great white shark began to stalk a recreational fishing boat in Tapley Shoal, a renowned shark habitat less than ten miles from Edithburgh, South Australia.

“Look at the size of this thing that’s come up behind us!” said one of the men on the boat, as Melbourne-based fisherman Mark Oaks reported to ABC Radio Adelaide Breakfast.

The 15-foot long shark continued to circle the recreational boat, which was only a few feet bigger. The men remained still and afraid, unsure of how to safefully leave the shark behind.

“We kind of had thoughts of changing our Bonds [underwear] a couple of times,” Oates said to ABC. “So we powered up and cruised out of there but it just kept following us for 10 minutes.”

Soon, two police approached in an inflatable dinghy. However, they weren’t necessarily there to help; instead, they were simply doing routine operations, “checking registration, licenses and safety equipment along with alcohol and drug testing” according to the SA police on social media.

The shark, later dubbed “Noah” by the light-humored police force, small after the small dinghy before returning to the recreational boat. Worried, Oates told the police to back off as the shark swam closer to their boat. The police remained put: under Australian law, great white sharks and listed as vulnerable and therefore cannot be harmed without permission from the government’s environment minister.

“For probably the next 10 or 15 minutes we just sat around,” Oates said. “There was very little fish caught that day, I can tell you.”

After the recreational boat’s companion refused to leave, the police gave up on their attempts come close to the boat and breath-test its passengers. As for Noah, he was fortunately left “off the hook” as well.

Logan Paul Is In Trouble Again, This Time with the U.S. National Park Service

YouTube star Logan Paul is no stranger to controversy.

In the past, Logan Paul has been criticized for allegedly making racially insensitive remarks and for uploading a video from his visit to the Aokigahara Forest in Japan, infamously known as the "Suicide Forest," where he showed the body of a suicide victim. The video was watched millions of times before it was eventually deleted by Paul. The backlash he received later prompted YouTube to suspend his account for 18 days and Paul, later in a statement on Twitter, said: “I didn’t do it for the views. I get views. I did it because I thought I could make a positive ripple on the internet, not cause a monsoon of negativity. That’s never the intention. I intended to raise awareness for suicide and suicide prevention…”

More than 80,000 people signed an online petition requesting YouTube to delete Paul’s channel after the release of the video, and Paul later apologized for his actions.

It appears that Logan Paul has not learned his lesson. On Monday, The Blast reported that Logan Paul earned a citation from a park ranger in Yosemite National Park for sitting on top of a tent attached to a moving bus. The park ranger on site issued him a fine for his "illegal operation." The ranger claimed the incident "wasn’t the smartest or safest thing to do."

In a video uploaded to his channel earlier this week, Paul admitted to the incident and uploaded footage of another encounter with a park ranger at Yosemite where he was reprimanded for taking up five parking slots while celebrating his birthday with friends. In that incident, Paul was not issued a fine. Teen Vogue reported that the ranger let him go, stating, "It's your birthday? Well I guess that means you don't get a ticket."

Parkland Survivor Anthony Borges Has Been Released From The Hospital

It's been almost two months since the massacre of Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida and the community is still reeling.

However, the community can find solace in the news that Anthony Borges, the last remaining victim wounded during the shooting, has finally left the hospital.

Borges was shot multiple times during the attack while shielding other students from the bullets. According to CNN, Borges had barricaded a doorway with his body in an effort to protect others from getting hurt and was shot through the door. He was lucky that a bullet just missed his liver, but had three bullets in his leg and had a third of his lung removed.

CBS News reports that Borges needed nine surgeries over the course of his hospital stay. Borges doesn't see himself as a hero, however; he just feels lucky to be alive. "I thought I was going to die," he said.

But the fight, now that he's left the hospital, is for justice. Alex Arreaza, Anthony's attorney, said that the Borges family plans to sue Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, and the Broward County Sheriff's Office over the incident.

In discussing in the intent to sue, Arreaza said, "The failure of Broward County Public Schools, and of the Principal and School Resource Officer to adequately protect students, and in particular our client, from life-threatening harm were unreasonable, callous and negligent."

Borges' quick thinking and courageousness helped other students stay alive. Whether he believes it or not, Borges was a hero on a day that his fellow students needed him.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Was Incredibly Honest & Open About His Experiences With Depression

Often, celebrities are viewed as invincible despite being very much the same as us. So really, it’s not very surprising that many celebrities go through the same struggles as us. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently shared his story of his fight with depression, and in doing so reminded us of his humanity. He also, by making the brave choice to share his struggle, reminded others that they are not alone in their fight against depression.

Johnson not only witnessed his family dealing with depression, but also battled with his own. During an interview with “Express,” published on April 1, Johnson explained that his personal experience with depression started with his mom’s depression and suicide attempt. Johnson recalled pulling his mom off of the road after “she got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic.”

The actor also discussed other instances in his life where he struggled with depression. After his then-girlfriend broke up with him and injuries ended Johnson's chances of playing professional football, Johnson found himself in a state of depression.

In sharing his struggles with depression with the world, Johnson showed an amazing amount of strength and courage. People have seemed to react in a heartwarming way. One fan responded to Johnson on Twitter, and the actor responded with love and support.

President Trump Has Signed a Proclamation to Send National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico Border

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Wednesday to deploy National Guard troops to the United States-Mexico border to assist the border patrol along the southern border and cut down on illegal immigration, NPR reports.

Following Trump’s announcement, Kirstjen Nielsen, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), spoke from the White House, saying that it was hoped that troops would be deployed “immediately,” but would not detail the scope or costs of this deployment, ABC News reports. When asked how many troops would be involved in the deployment, Nielsen replied, “As many as is needed to fill the gaps today.”

“Our current border security and immigration laws fail the American people. The system rewards bad behavior. It does not punish lawbreakers. It undermines our nation's economic interests,” Nielsen added.

According to Nielsen, the Department of Defense (DOD) and DHS have been “directed to work together with our governors to deploy the National Guard to our southwest border, to assist the Border Patrol.”

According to NPR, DHS’ Customs and Border Protection reported on Wednesday that concerns of people entering the country illegally through the southern border had increased by 37 percent in March from the February level. It had also jumped by 203 percent from March 2017’s level.

On Tuesday, Trump hinted at wanting to send troops to help secure the border.

“We're going to do some things militarily,” Trump said. “Until we can have a wall and proper security, we're going to be guarding our border with the military.”

“That's a big step. We really haven't done that before, or certainly not very much before,” Trump added.

While the president does have the authority to order active duty military personnel and federal National Guard troops to assist with border security, they are not permitted to carry out law enforcement jobs, such as detaining immigrants that cross the border, ABC News reports.

This move does have several precedents. According to NPR, every president since Ronald Reagan has deployed troops for temporary missions along the border. President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama both sent troops during their administrations to assist with border operations, primarily concerning surveillance, so Customs and Border Protection personnel could focus on enforcement, ABC News reports.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders blamed Congress for its inaction regarding border security, which led the president to his decision to deploy troops to the border.

“The president has been talking about it for years, since he started on the campaign trail,” Sanders said. “He wanted to work through Congress. He asked them to do their jobs. He asked them to pass legislation that actually would close loopholes that would secure our border."

“He is doing what he can to protect the people of this country and he'll continue to do that and look at different measures that he can do it,” Sanders added.

21 Things Only Girls Who Stress About EVERYTHING Understand

The concept of taking a chill pill might be a joke, but at this rate, you’d be thrilled for it to be real so you could take a full prescription. Life is a series of ups and downs, but lately, you’ve had trouble keeping balance and would “very much like to be excluded from this narrative.” Here are some signs that you’re seriously stressed TF out.

1. Hearing “It’s not a big deal” annoys the living crap out of you.

You obviously wouldn’t be stressing this bad if it were a small deal!

2. Your body is sending you some serious danger signals that you keep ignoring.

It’s normal to rotate between fevers, stomach problems and headaches on a weekly basis, right?

3. You can’t remember the last time you slept through the night.

There aren’t enough glasses of wine in the world to get you to knock out peacefully.

4. And the idea of “rest” seems like a foreign concept.

This “relax” that you speak of…how do you go about doing it?

5. You joke about people taking you out of your misery but are actually 100 percent serious.

SEND HELP, A BOX OF CHEEZ-ITS AND SWEATPANTS THAT ARE ACTUALLY CLEAN ENOUGH TO WEAR.

6. Drinking has become a hobby instead of a social activity.

Not sure which is more soothing. Making cocktails or drinking them…

7. You change moods more often than you change outfits.

Today’s look is agitation with a few layers of anxiety, just to add some extra flair.

8. In fact, it doesn’t take much to set you off anymore.

It’s like 24/7 PMS with no relief. The horror.

9. Honestly, the only thing that manages to calm you down anymore is TV.

Netflix and chill…the hell out before you go crazy.

10. Or maybe a good cry because you’ve been doing a lot of that lately.

But you’re as in denial about it as the Grinch was when he asked himself, “Why is my face…leaking?”

11. You have become a pro at emotional eating.

And that means binging on Chinese food and ice cream until your stomach screams, “Please, stop!”

12. Or you haven’t had much of an appetite lately.

You know it’s bad when you’ve gone weeks without pizza.

13. Your friends and family are constantly telling you that you need to slow down.

Chances of listening to them are as nonexistent as your romantic life.

14. You can’t stand when someone tells you to stop being a “control freak” or “perfectionist.”

This is about as effective as those teeth-whitening strips that you used to use.

15. Sometimes you just wish that you could stay in bed indefinitely.

You prefer comfy blankets to human contact.

16. Your sex drive has gone way, way down.

Your mind has too many things to worry about to make room for X-rated thoughts.

17. To-do lists have become a mandatory, painful part of your daily grind.

This is taking “I can’t even” to a whole new level.

18. You have trouble concentrating on the simplest tasks.

Sometimes people ask your name and you blank out for a minute.

19. Your eyes sometimes twitch so bad that people think you’re winking at them.

MUST STOP SENDING SEXY SIGNALS. YOU’RE TOO STRESSED FOR SEXY. NO.

20. Your face is breaking out worse than it ever has.

Welcome to planet acne! On your right, you’ll find a crater that popped in just in time for Monday morning!

21. You’ve considered getting a therapist to help you cope.

Because you know that your self-care is a priority, not an option!

HC Wake-Up Call: White House is Backpedaling on Trump’s Remarks to Withdraw Troops From Syria, China Threatens to Place a 25% Tariff on $50 Billion of U.S. Goods & Apple May Be Releasing An iPhone With a Curved Screen

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

White House is Backpedaling on Trump’s Remarks to Pull Troops Out of Syria

Despite President Trump’s recent calls to remove troops from Syria “very soon,” the White House issued a statement on Wednesday to clarify the president’s statements, but did not actually announce an immediate withdrawal of troops from the region or timeline for withdrawal, ABC News reports.

“The military mission to eradicate ISIS in Syria is coming to a rapid end, with ISIS being almost completely destroyed,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said, adding, “The United States and our partners remain committed to eliminating the small ISIS presence in Syria that our forces have not already eradicated. We will continue to consult with our allies and friends regarding future plans.”

“We expect countries in the region and beyond, plus the United Nations, to work toward peace and ensure that ISIS never re-emerges,” Sanders said.

In a press briefing later that day, Sanders told reporters that the president wasn’t going to put an “arbitrary timeline” on the withdrawal of the troops, ABC News reports.

Last week during a speech on infrastructure in Ohio, however, Trump surprised the crowd and his Cabinet members by announcing that the U.S. planned to remove its troops from Syria “very soon.”

On Tuesday, Trump reiterated his call from withdrawal, remarking that the U.S. will be making a decision “very quickly in coordination with others in the area as to what we'll do,” and that if the countries of the region want the U.S. to remain there, they should pay for it, ABC News reports.

“I want to get out. I want to bring our troops back home. I want to start rebuilding our nation,” Trump said during the press conference. “It's time. We were successful against ISIS. We'll be successful against anybody militarily, but sometimes it's time to come back home — and we're thinking about that very seriously.”

China Threatens to Place a 25% Tariff on $50 Billion of U.S. Goods

Only a day after the United States proposed placing a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion of goods from China, China reciprocated the tariff plan, ABC News reports.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative issued a list on Tuesday, outlining 1,300 Chinese products, including industrial robots and telecommunications equipment, that it would place a tariff on. The tariffs would not take place right away, however; a public comment period would last until May 11, with a hearing on the tariff taking place on May 15. During this time, companies and consumers would be able to express their opinions and lobby for certain products to be removed or added to the list.

According to ABC News, China's Ministry of Commerce released a statement listing 106 U.S. goods — ranging from food to alcohol to aircraft — that it plans to tax.

However, the Ministry of Commerce did not specifically state when it plans to implement this tariff on U.S. goods.

“This measure of the United States clearly violates the relevant rules of the World Trade Organization and seriously violates China's legitimate rights and interests under the rules of the World Trade Organization and threatens China's economic interests and security,” the Ministry of Commerce said in its statement.

“In order to safeguard China's legitimate rights and interests in violation of international obligations of the United States, the Chinese government will rely on laws and regulations of the ‘Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China’ and other basic principles of international law,” the statement said.

Apple May Be Releasing An iPhone With a Curved Screen & I’m Ready to Upgrade

The iPhone X is amazing with all its top-of-the-line features, but Apple may still have some surprises in store. According to HelloGiggles, Apple may be releasing an iPhone with a curved screen in the future. And while it hasn’t exactly been announced yet, I’m totally down for Apple to do this.

According to a report from Bloomberg, future iPhones could be curved inward from top to bottom. But that’s not the only awesome part. Future iPhones might be able to be controlled with gestures. Whaaaaat?

Yeah, you would be able to tell your iPhone what you want it to do by gesturing your fingers in the air, just above the screen. So you wouldn’t even need to actually touch your phone!

According to HelloGiggles, however, this technology probably won’t be available for another two to three years, if this is what Apple decides to do for its future iPhones.

Either way, this sounds like it would be totally awesome, and I’m ready to upgrade whenever Apple is ready with this super cool iPhone. I’m just hoping it also has a longer battery life, because I know I’m going to need it.

C'mon Kids, Please Don't Snort Condoms — Because No Meme Is Worth It

$
0

Since the rise of YouTube monetization, trending fads have been ever-present on our social media streams.  Unlike the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) ice bucket challenge that subsequently raised millions of dollars for research after its viral debut in 2014, not every internet challenge is successful (or safe for that matter). The latest challenge to inoculate YouTubers and amateur memers is the condom-snorting challenge—and yes, it’s as frightening as it sounds.

Like the infamous tide pod challenge, which was initially inspired by seemingly harmless memes, The Washington Post reports that young people are challenging each other to snort condoms. In the condom-snorting challenge, participants, typically young people, insufflate a condom through their nose and pull it out from their mouth. Beyond the initial anti-hygienic factor, this challenge can have deadly ramifications.

While this deceivingly silly dare might not seem like it poses a health risk, inhaling anything—other than air and medically prescribed or recommended nasal spray, through your nasal passageway can pose a serious health risk. (In case putting something that isn’t intended for nasal use in your nose wasn’t enough of a warning already.)

An associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Bruce Lee, notes in his column for Forbes, “The condom could easily get stuck in your nose or your throat, blocking your breathing or causing you to choke.” Condoms are meant to facilitate safer sex; however, condoms won’t protect your airways from suffocation or asphyxiation.

After a foreign object, in this instance a condom, goes through your nostril, it enters the nasal cavity and then the nasopharynx, where it begins its journey down the pharynx. The pharynx is a membranous cavity that connects the nose and mouth; however, it also eventually leads to the trachea (you know, our air tube). Because the pharynx, which is the general area challengers will be retrieving the condoms, is a sensitive structure the condom could easily become lodged in the pharynx. Obviously, if an object obstructs your pharynx, then your ability to breathe and function can be severely hindered—because this leads to suffocation and subsequent asphyxiation.

Ultimately, asphyxiation can cause generalized hypoxia and even brain hypoxia. Brain hypoxia basically occurs when your brain doesn't get enough oxygen, according toHealthline. If left untreated, hypoxia can result in death.

Beyond the risk of dying via suffocation which is a huge risk compared to the momentary internet-fame payoff, inhaling foreign objects, whether from your nose or your mouth, can cause dangerous complications and risks. As The Indian Journal of Chest Disease & Allied Sciences reports, a woman inadvertently inhaled a condom during while performing oral sex. The incident predates the condom-inhaling of today, but the woman suffered from pneumonia and partial lung collapse as a result of the inhalation. (Plus, the study says she had a chronic cough and fever for six months after the event—yikes.)

Nevertheless, this isn’t the first time a condom-snorting challenge has been popularized. According to ABC News, a condom-snorting challenge debuted back in 2007, after a single video started trending. The Washington Postadds that the same condom-themed challenge also surfaced back in 2013. However, the hype around the challenge has been dormant ever since.

If the hype surrounding this new challenge is similar to the tide pod challenge, then the condom-snorting challenge could generate additional problems and inconveniences beyond its potentially lethal side effects.

After the tide pod challenge became YouTube-famous in Jan. 2018, health professionals warned participants about the harmful implications. As the tide pod challenge continued, retailers responded by securing tide pods and similar product behind locked cases. If this latex-snorting debacle ensues, the next “forbidden snack bags” could be condoms, as retailers could barricade them behind glass display cases.

However, the infamous tide pod fad did create a pseudo-resolution for the challenge: a recipe for edible tide pods. If participants continue to inhale condoms through their nose, we might see a comprehensive DIY instructional for nostril-safe condoms.

Regardless of how similar the upcoming condom-snorting challenge its laundry detergent predecessor, you shouldn’t try to inhale condoms. Like, please?

'Charmed' Is Making a Comeback, But It's Not What You Think

Just like any long-running female-led series, Charmed has had a cult following since its pilot debut in 1998 on The WB. If you’ve never heard of this show, it’s completely normal because we’re not really part of its original generation. It chronicles the lives of three sisters who discover they’re witches who must use their power for good and protect innocent people from evil.

Drawing over 7.7 million people in the first episode, the iconic series ran for eight seasons and became a cultural phenomenon; it was so much of an icon that The CW announced this past January a series of the same name and loosely based on the original plot.

While not many details of the new show have been released, the setting and general plot line are known, and there are some major differences. Instead of taking place in San Francisco like the original, the new feminist reboot will be set in an unnamed college town. It is also unclear whether both sets of witches are related to one another, but they have multiple recognizable similarities between them: the alliteration of their first names and their individual powers. Macy, Mel and Madison Pruitt tip their hats to the original Charmed witches—Prue, Piper and Phoebe. The more modern witches have powers of telekinesis, time-freezing and hearing people’s thoughts, respectively. In contrast to Maggie’s ability to read minds, Phoebe has the power of premonition.

As of March, all three witches have been cast. Known for her roles in Into the Badlands and The Tomorrow People, Madeleine Mantock is set to play Macy, the oldest sister and an extremely talented geneticist. Fruitvale Station’s Melonie Diaz will play Mel, the middle sister who’s both a dedicated activist and a lesbian. Finally, Sarah Jeffery, who’s widely known for her role in Disney’s Descendants, will play the youngest sister and first-year college student, Madison. We’re not sure if there will be a half-sister cast down the line like the original, but this lineup is definitely a winner.

Whether fans of the original series will like this reboot is up in the air. What’s for sure is Holly Marie Combs’ disapproval of the upcoming show. Having played Piper Halliwell for all eight seasons of the show, it’s understandable doesn't want the original to be cast aside for a more modern version.

In a tweet from February, she wrote, “Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.”

Despite Combs’ lack of support, we’re just excited for the potential of a new cult following because there’s only so many times we can rewatch Riverdale when it goes off air.

Not having our moms show up for us at a moment’s notice anymore totally makes us miss their advice, their hugs and obviously their cooking because nobody can make dinner like Mom does.

If there’s anything else that living on our own teaches us, it’s that we all inevitably become our mothers someday. These 15 moments are huge signs that you are basically the exact same person as your dear ol' mom.

1. You figure out that your mom’s cleanliness has rubbed off on you

Suddenly you’re screaming at your housemates for leaving dirty dishes in the sink because Mom’s kitchen was always spotless.

2. You ask your friends to text you when they get home safely

How are you supposed to get a good night’s sleep otherwise?!

3. You and your mom buy the same shirt without consulting each other

Just don’t wear it at the same time.

4. You’re both painstakingly early (or embarrassingly late) for events

You and Mom obviously have the same internal clock.

5. You and your mom find the same celebrities attractive

What’s weirder, being a 20-something and crushing on the 36-year-old Bachelor or being over 50 and crushing on the Bachelor?

6. You unintentionally style your hair the same way

Your mom rocks so much more than the typical “mom ‘do.”

7. As you get older, you realize that you make friends with the same kind of people your mom does

She taught you to find people who know how to treat you right.

8. The two of you use the same corny sayings in everyday conversation

Fess up, you totally taught her the meaning of “lit.”

9. One of you starts watching a Netflix series and the other one starts too

I mean, now you have someone to gab about Stranger Things with.

10. You share a downright annoying pet peeve

You text each other in fury whenever you see a dog dressed as a human.

11. You and Mom appreciate the same kind of cocktail or other alcoholic drink

Good taste in liquor runs in the family.

12. You learned everything you know about organization (or lack thereof) from her

She showed you how to color code, and you taught her how to use organization apps.

13. You can get into pretty intense arguments because you’re so similar

You definitely know how to push each other’s buttons.

14. If you answer her phone, her friends think you sound like her

Genetics, man.

15. You don’t deny that the two of you are the same because there’s no one else you’d rather be like

Moms are just the best.

7 Storylines We Seriously Need To See Explored Further On 'Rise'

We are four episodes into NBC’s Rise, and so far, many storylines have been introduced, but few have been explored in depth. And while there is only so much that can be squeezed into one 42-minute episode, it would be nice to delve deeper into certain plot points. Here are seven storylines that definitely deserve further exploration on Rise.

1. Gordy’s Struggle with Addiction

Image from Giphy

Addiction and alcoholism are real problems that people of all ages struggle with. So, Gordy’s struggle with drinking is plot point that has the potential to resonate with many people. However, we haven’t really delved into the root of his problem. We know Gordy’s relationship with his parents is rocky and football is one of his passions, but we still don’t fully understand the root of his struggle. At the end of episode four, Gordy is missing, but we still don’t have a deeper understanding of his addiction.

2. Mr. Mazzu’s Home Life

Image from Giphy

It’s obvious: Mr. Mazzu is super dedicated to his work with the Stanton High musical. But, he also has a home life that includes a wife, three children, and Maashous. But, aside from the Gordy drama, we really don’t have much understanding about his relationship with his wife and children. We see flashes of them in each episode, but none of these moments are expanded on. In the first episode, it looked like sparks were flying between Mr. Mazzu’s daughter and Maashous, but this is never addressed again. Mr. Mazzu and his wife have many moments of tension, but they never escalate, and just seem to disappear. It’s clear that Mr. Mazzu’s home life is full of drama, so why can’t the domestic drama match the drama on stage?

3. Simon and Lilette’s Friendship

Image from Giphy

We know that Simon and Lilette are friends. He encouraged her to try out for the musical and looked out for her at Robbie’s party. Lilette was so mad when Simon announced that he would be transferring schools. They obviously care about each other, so why don’t we see them interacting more on screen? How did they become friends? At this point, I care more about Lilette and Simon’s friendship than the flirtation between Lilette and Robbie.

4. Literally anything about Gwen

Image from Giphy

Gwen’s character had a strong start, as she was reconciling her feelings concerning a) losing the lead role in the musical and b) her father’s affair with Lilette’s mother. Based on these plot points alone, Gwen makes for a really interesting character. It would be nice to see her fleshed out as a foil to Lilette as opposed to an antagonist.

5. Maashous’s Back Story

Image from Giphy

Maashous is the best character on this show. Hands down. I just want more Maashous. In episode three, we learned a little bit about his home life when Mr. Mazzu went to visit Maashous’s foster mom, but we still don’t fully understand how Maashous ended up sleeping in the lighting booth. The more I think about it, why isn’t Maashous the star of this show?

6. The relationships between the students and their parents

Image from Giphy

Most of the drama in this show occurs between parents and children. Lilette and Gwen are dealing with their respective parent’s infidelity. Simon has to reconcile his desire to be in the provocative musical with his parent’s religious beliefs. Robbie is coping with his mother’s illness. Gordy and Mr. Mazzu’s children have to compete with a high school production of Spring Awakening for their father’s attention. Again, 42 minutes is a short time to tackle the stories of so many characters, but it would be nice to explore the parent/child relationships in more depth.

7. What is going on with this musical?!

Image from Giphy

A key storyline in Rise is that the students of Stanton High are rehearsing for the school musical. Yet, most of the show takes place outside of the auditorium. And when we are briefly in the auditorium, it seems like they are always rehearsing the same musical number. Or, if they are singing a new song, it’s only to support the angst that is involved with one individual’s storyline. When will they be ready to perform this for the school? How much time will they devote to the other musical numbers? When will the set be built? I have so many questions.

At this point it’s clear—John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are #relationshipgoals. Between talking about the adorable way they met, or sharing cute stories about their kids, they are hands down one of the best celeb couples out there.

So, as they embark on the press tour for their new film, A Quiet Place, which Krasinski directed and co-wrote, you know we are going to get some more cute moments. Last night Krasinski stopped by The Tonight Show to chat with Jimmy Fallon, and of course he shared another funny story about his relationship with Blunt.

While she was filming Mary Poppins Returns, Krasinski went to London to visit his wife, and he had a run-in with a customs agent. While it was initially a positive experience, when Krasinski moved on to another agent, he could tell that things were about to get rough.

“He said, ‘It says here that you’re an actor. Would I know you from anything?’” Krasinski said. “And I went, ‘You know, we redid the U.K. version of The Office.

This didn’t sit well with the agent, who then asked a follow up question.

“And then he says, ‘Who are you visiting here?’” Krasinski continued. “And I was like, ‘My wife,'” said the star. “He says, ‘Oh, is she an actress? Would I know her?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know man, her name’s Emily Blunt.’ And he goes like this, ‘You? You married Emily Blunt? Go. Just go.'”

It turns out Krasinski shares the customs agent’s shock that he ended up with Emily Blunt, as earlier in the interview he told the audience, “I married up and don't I know it."

A Quiet Place hits theatres April 6.

Last October, a woman named Juli Briskman became Internet famous for giving the middle finger to President Trump’s motorcade while riding her bike nearby. She was then fired from her job in the marketing department of Akima LLC, and is now suing the company for unlawful termination.

Briskman told CNN that she was told she had violated the company's social media policy and that the company then fired her.

On Wednesday, Briskman tweeted that “I was fired from my job for flipping off @realDonaldTrump. Today, I filed suit with @GellerLawyers & @protctdemocracy because what happened to me was unlawful and un-American."

In a statement on Protect Democracy, Briskman’s lawyer, Maria Simon, claimed that Akima’s “forced Juli to resign out of fear of unlawful retaliation by the government” and that in doing so, they “violated the basic tenets of Virginia employment law.”

"Juli's expression of disapproval of the President is fundamental political speech protected by both the United States Constitution and Virginia state law," Simon said.

Police Shot & Killed An Unarmed Black Man In Brooklyn Believing The Metal Pipe He Was Holding Was A Gun

The New York Police Department said that officers fatally shot Saheed Vassell, a 34-year-old unarmed Brooklyn resident, on Wednesday.

NYPD Chief Terence A. Monahan told Buzzfeed that the NYPD received 3 separate 911 calls describing “a black man wearing a brown jacket and pointing ‘a silver firearm’ at people on a Crown Heights street.” Surveillance footage from that day confirms these calls. According to Monahan, it showed “a man brandishing what appears to be a firearm — pointing it at people.”

In reality, this firearm was actually just a silver pipe with a knob at the end.

Five officers arrived on the scene and encountered Vassell at a street corner. "The suspect then took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed an object at the approaching officers," Monahan said. Four of the five officers shot a total of ten rounds at Vassell, killing him.

In response to Vassell’s death, the New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman opened an investigation. Buzzfeed News explains, “As per an executive order, the attorney general has the authority to oversee investigations into incidents where unarmed civilians die during interactions with police, or incidents where there is significant question as to whether the civilian was armed and dangerous.”

"We’re committed to conducting an independent, comprehensive, and fair investigation," Spitalnick, Schneiderman’s spokesperson, told Buzzfeed.

Police told the New York Timesthat Vassell had been arrested before and classified as “an emotionally disturbed person.” Local residents said that Vassell was a familiar figure on the street and never seen as a threat. Many claim that the police knew who he was and should have known better than to shoot him.

7 Skincare Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

They say that your eyes are the windows to your soul. But what about your skin?

Skincare is an increasingly popular segment of the beauty industry, and it seems that everywhere you look there are advertisements for products and practices that will help you get the "perfect" skin. But finding the perfect routine that works for you is a big challenge, especially when many everyday skincare products and typical habits that promote positive results are actually doing the opposite. “It’s extremely important to understand the truth behind what you’re using,” says Lorraine Willwerth, certified aesthetician and owner of Glow Skin Salon in Reading, Massachusetts, “it’s important to be gentle and treat it your skin right.”

We’ve laid out the most common skincare mistakes that are truly more harmful than they seem and will have you rethinking the way you take care of your skin.

1. Not wearing sunscreen every day

Even if you don’t think you’re damaging your skin by not wearing sunscreen, you are. Hyperpigmentation and potentially cancerous cells are just two ways that UV rays can damage your skin, and these can develop more quickly than you think. Plus, if you're on birth control, there’s another risk is the potential for developing melasma, or brown patches on your skin.

Mary McCallum, registered nurse and owner of LeDerm Laser and Medical Aesthetics in Lexington, MA, says it’s usually seen a blotchy, brownish facial pigmentation, usually like a shadowy moustache above the upper lip, but can occur all over the face. “Since there’s no way to get rid of it, you have to prevent it,” says McCallum. Try using the Image Skincare PREVENTION+ Daily Hydrating Moisturizer ($39, Image Skincare).

“I have extra sensitive skin so I try to wear at least face sunscreen everyday. My grandmother always warned me about getting skin cancer growing up and it’s advice I’m thankful for!” says Sierra Clair, a student at LMU.

2. Not washing off your makeup every night

After spending an entire day attracting bacteria, touching your face, and allowing your makeup to clog your pores, it’s important to clean your face every night.

Even using makeup wipes isn’t enough to fully cleanse your skin. McCallum recommends using a hydrating or exfoliating cleanser every night as well. The Image Skincare VITAL C Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a great option ($29, Image Skincare).

3. Forgetting to clean your makeup brushes

If you don’t wash your brushes, you’re just adding germs, germs, and more germs back onto your skin. Bacteria and traces of old makeup, which are left behind on your brushes, can easily clog up your pores and lead to breakouts.
All it takes is a quick wash with mild soap and water or a brush shampoo, like Sephora’s Purifying Brush Shampoo ($7, Sephora), to disinfect your brushes and keep them clean and long-lasting.

4. Using the wrong products for your skin

“Using products that work for someone else is not the best option for you,” says McCallum. You should customize your skincare routine for your personal needs, not what you see advertised online and in magazines or what other people say works for them. If you have problem skin, don’t be afraid to seek help from a professional. It’s not worth it to make mistakes and cause more damage trying to combat it on your own.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on more expensive products; the quality of the ingredients will have you seeing better results more quickly, and prevent you from spending more money trying out lesser-quality products that may damage your skin. One of the best investments you can make is in quality nighttime skin products; overnight is the best seven hours of built-in beauty treatment that you can get.

5. Using products that are too harsh

Most products advertised to clear up acne are more harsh than anyone with normal hormonal skin needs. These products can strip your skin in often irreversible ways––damaging its natural pH balance and ratio of oil––and actually cause your skin to break out even more.

Most breakouts are actually caused by oil and dryness, says Willwerth, which can be easily combated by drinking more water and moisturizing every day instead of using harmful products. Additionally, using water-enhancing products like hyaluronic acid will allow your skin to absorb more water, thus hydrating the skin more effectively and diluting the acne causing oils to prevent breakouts.

6. Picking at your skin

It’s common to pick at your acne, hoping that whatever you do will make it go away. But doing that can actually cause breakouts to become much, much worse. Most of the time, the skin does extremely well healing infections on its own, and if you just leave breakouts alone more often than not they’ll go away without ever coming to a head.

7. Not drinking enough water

The biggest problem for women in college is that we don’t drink enough water, and instead drink too much caffeine. Pair that with too little sleep and too much stress, and you have a skincare nightmare.

It’s common for skin to break out under these conditions, and the best way to combat it is to drink more water, and eat foods high in antioxidants and vitamin A (like fruits and veggies) that will keep your skin healthy.

Avoiding all of these common mistakes are taking your skincare regime seriously is the key to glowing, healthy skin. The importance of being careful about how you treat your skin cannot be overlooked.

“Basic skincare is easy. [Washing] your face, moisturizing daily, using essential oils...eating right, and drinking lots of water - it all goes along with self care. Do what makes you feel good and that'll be reflected in your appearance!” says Autumn Dube, Emmanuel College 2017 graduate.

There ya have it, collegiettes! Glowing skin is only a few steps away.
