Cengage Is Launching A Service That's Essentially 'Netflix for Textbooks'& It's A Huge Game-Changer

Netflix isn't quite the new kid on the block anymore when it comes to consuming digital media, but there's one solid reason why everyone loves it: it offers unlimited access to tons of television shows, movies and more for one extremely low price. Now, what if I told you that you could find same affordability and accessibility in purchasing textbooks and other course materials?

While this sounds too good to be true, it can certainly be your reality beginning August 2018. Introducing Cengage Unlimited, the "Netflix for textbooks" service that's completely turning the industry upside down—saving you hundreds on course materials in the process!

This one-of-its-kind service isn't messing around when it comes to making education more affordable. According to Cengage's press release, the Boston-based textbook publisher has created Cengage Unlimited to offer students access to more than 20,000 products across 70 disciplines and more than 675 courses, all for $119.99 a semester (or $179.99 for a 12-month subscription). After paying this one-time fee, students will have access to an online dashboard offering unlimited access to Cengage's entire library of digital resources, no matter how many course materials you may need. (Uh, sign me up?!)

Not ready to part with printed books? While Cengage Unlimited boasts their vast digital library, Cengage knows that students seek out a mix of media, including traditional printed textbooks that you can highlight and scribble in as much as your heart desires. Therefore, students using the digital platform will also have access to free print rentals, paying just $7.99 for shipping.

And if that's not enough to get excited about, Cengage has also recently announced their partnership with Chegg, giving Cengage Unlimited subscribers a month of free access to a variety of Chegg's services for students, including tutoring.

"High costs are limiting too many students from being able to access and succeed in their learning," says Michael Hansen, the CEO of Cengage. "Students are either spending hundreds of dollars a year on materials, or else put off buying them altogether because they can’t afford them. And, for many students who do find a way, it's because they're taking on student loan debt that will impact them for years."

Students are "the primary focus" of everything Cengage does, says EVP and Chief Product Officer Fernando Bleichmar, and for low-income students who are burdened with loan debt, this service is an absolute game-changer. Think about it: the textbook industry is so high-cost that it's absolutely detrimental to a student's success in the classroom. According to a Cengage infographic, 72 percent of students have put off buying course materials until after their class has started (raise your hand if you've been there before!), and 45 percent of students have decided not to register for a course due to the cost. That's an incredible amount of student's who have missed out on a huge educational opportunity!

And the implications don't stop there. Over the past 10 years, household income has declined by seven percent while college prices have increased by 45 percent. And I don't mean to scare you, but the reality is this: the average student spends more than $500 a year on course materials, making signing up for classes and buying textbooks an expensive, anxiety-ridden experience. (*cue mic drop*)

"The narrative about improving higher education outcomes has been too focused on the tools and not enough on the learners," says Sharon Loeb, Chief Marketing Officer at Cengage. "The truth is, while quality is critical, affordability is equally important. Students can’t access learning if they can’t afford it."

A quality education and good grades should never be sacrificed due to the inability to afford course materials. Thankfully, Cengage is currently working with its partners at on-campus and off-campus bookstores and online retailers to make this subscription service available to students. Additionally, Cengage is also connecting with professors, as they're ultimately responsible for assigning the course materials. "We work with faculty to convince them what the best technology and what the best content is to teach the students," Hansen tells CNBC Squawk Alley.

This groundbreaking service launches August 2018, so be sure to provide your email address to stay in-the-know! More affordable textbooks and education will soon be yours.

'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Got Renewed For A Fourth & Reportedly Final Season

It’s contract season in the entertainment industry, and that means we get to find out which of our favorite television series will be renewed for upcoming seasons. Thankfully, we didn’t waste any of the time getting emotionally invested in Rebecca Bunch’s musical escapades on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the CW has renewed 10 TV show, including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, for its fourth and last season.

As THR reports, the CW announced their renewal lineup which includes fan favorites like Black Lightning, Jane the Virgin, Supergirl, Supernatural and, of course, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. While we finish our empowering handwritten draft about why the CW should renew Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for another five seasons, THR adds that though the show’s co-creator, Rachel Bloom who also portrays Rebecca Bunch, says the series will end after this new season, the CW hasn’t confirmed this information.

Bloom tweeted the news on Monday, saying, “Just turned on my Wifi on our flight to Chicago found out that #CrazyExGirlfriend has been renewed for a final season.” While the phrase “final season” might seem like a definitive end to the series, the CW hasn’t confirmed these claims.

As we draw closer to May, THR anticipates that the CW will either breakoff our relationship with our favorite ex or continue our relationship with our fave protagonist.

Nevertheless, Bustle notes that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has already had an extraordinary run on the CW—seeing as the series almost never aired. During Bloom’s Golden Globes Speech in 2016, she noted, “We almost didn’t have a show. We made a pilot for another network and they rejected it, and we sent the pilot to every other network in Hollywood and we got six rejections in one day and we felt like crap, but we knew it was good, and Mark Pedowitz from The CW picked it out and he is the one who saved us, and he is the reason that there is a musical comedy on network television right now.”

Known for reclaiming problematic sexist diatribe, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend might not be the perfect show or the most healthy representation of feminism, but we’re glad that we can watch this series for at least another season.

Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Tatum Announced Their Separation In A Devastatingly Bittersweet Statement

While you’re fine-tuning the catering list for your quaint royal wedding party because Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding should be an international holiday, other celebrity couples are ending the era of infatuation in their own relationships. Though we’re still grieving Anna Faris and Chris Pratt’s separation, another unexpected celebrity couple has officially announced their split: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum.

According toPEOPLE, Channing and Jenna issued a statement on Channing's Instagram account yesterday. In the post, the soon-to-be solo duo noted that they wanted to make their decision to divorce public because sharing their private life is just “a consequence of the lives [they’ve] chosen to lead, which [they] also happen to be deeply grateful for."

“We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple.  We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible. We are still a family and will always be loving dedicated parents to Everly. We won’t be commenting beyond this, and we thank you all in advance for respecting our family’s privacy.  Sending lots of love to everyone, Chan&Jenna.” Channing and Jenna added in their post.

According to Fox News, Channing and Jenna have been together for the last 9 years, which might be why the end of their romantic relationship seems so amicable. However, Page Six alleges that the couple actually split around the time of the 2018 Oscars. Page Six reports that Jenna attended Vanity Fair’s Oscars party with her friends instead of Channing. Granted, spending some quality time with the gals doesn’t mean the two were plotting their split at that time.

The Mercury News notes that Channing and Jenna originally met on the set of Step Up back in 2006, which will make it difficult for us to rewatch the film during our bi-weekly movie binge. It feels like our celeb parents are divorcing and we can’t control our emotions. (TBH, I think I cried less when my exes broke up with me.)

As E! News helps us reminisce on Channing and Jenna’s picturesque love story (after all their love story basically apotheosized love itself), we don’t think our emotionally unavailable hearts can handle any more celebrity breakups. (Can we postpone any other potential celeb breakups until March 52, 2019?)

I Tried A Laser Treatment for My Acne Scars & Zits – Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me About This Sooner?

You guys. YOU GUYS. I tried a laser for my acne and my mind is so beyond blown right now, because like, it worked?? Is this real life?

So here's the deal: I'm the resident skincare-obsessed Social Media Editor who you might know from Face Mask & Chill, our weekly Instagram Story (and if you don't, well, go follow us on Instagram because I try a lot of weird stuff there, too, you're welcome). And most recently, I tried the ESPADA from Foreo, aka a little laser for zits. In short? I'm obsessed.

Here's what it is.

Foreo is an extremely cool brand that makes absurdly ~snazzy~ skincare tools, so it's basically a company after my heart. I am, after all, willing to try most things in pursuit of glowing, happy skin. The ESPADA from Foreo is a "blue light acne treatment with laser-precision targeting," which basically means it shines a targeted laser on your face. The process itself is pretty relaxing, and so easy. First, I charged the ESPADA with my laptop, because it's 2018 and that's how skincare works right now. Then, I pressed the little button on its soft little body. Once it's on, a red "x" shape forms, and you hold that right over your zit of the day.

Once it registers your skin, it begins to pulse, and it kind of feels like a vibrator for your face, but in a good way. It delivers a 30 second treatment, and you know it's done when it finishes buzzing.

You can either repeat the treatment up to four times on a single blemish, or continue your trip around your face and grab some other zits.

Here's how it went down.

I had a delightful, nasty pimple on my cheek, so I gave it two zaps and went to bed.

And then it was almost gone???

I honestly didn't think this was going to work. Not that I don't believe in Foreo, but that there are so many skincare gimmicks happening right now. I try a lot of them – some are total flops, or they make my skin freak out and turn red, or they birth a zillion tiny, angry zits. But this actually helped the zit destruction process make some seriously major progress. I didn't expect the ESPADA to make my skin smooth and flawless overnight, but I was beyond thrilled to see that the zit had gone from day one stage to like, week two, and was basically hardly there at all. Instead, there was just a kind of red mark where it once was, which I'll work on healing with my beloved stash of acids and a good face mask or two.

What I love the most about this product is that I don't have to keep buying pieces to replace, or cartridges, or anything like that. I'll just keep it clean and charged and use it forever, which helps me justify the price tag. I'm going to keep trying this on my zits, and I'll report back on Face Mask and Chill on Instagram Stories. But until then, this gets a solid 🙌🙌🙌 in my book.

Urban Decay Is Releasing a Gorgeous Summer 2018 Beached Collection & It's Sure to Make Waves

Summer makeup can be tricky. On one hand, there’s blue eyeshadow, summery glosses, beach waves and ALL the bronzer. But, on the other hand, there's the strong possibility that all of your hard work and makeup will melt off immediately in the summer heat. Lucky for you, Urban Decay’s new Beached Collection may be the perfect solution.

With a collection of bronzed tones and pops of complementary colors, you’ll be able to rock this collection all summer long without the fear that your makeup will end up smudged all over your face (because mascara on your cheeks is never a cute look). Urban Decay is already famous for its cult-faves that are designed to lock your makeup in place all day (and night!) such as the All Nighter Setting Spray ($32 at Urban Decay) and Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($22 at Urban Decay).

The collection was inspired by last year’s launch of the matte Beached Bronzers ($35 at Urban Decay) and the view outside of Urban Decay co-founder Wende’s beach home, Steve Kassajikian, Urban Decay’s global makeup artist, told Cosmopolitan. The entire collection will be available online at Ulta Beauty on May 8 and in-store (at Ulta Beauty and Urban Decay) on May 10. Here’s everything included in the collection, so you can start planning (and saving) in advance.

1. Summer In A Palette

This is the perfect palette for summer. Instead of simply having neutral shades, it has warm-toned reds, which pair perfectly with a bronzer for a glowing look. What makes this palette unique is also the two blue shades, which are classic for the summer and pair nicely with the rest of the colors in this palette. The best part is the small size of the palette, which is low-maintenance enough to travel with!

2. Metallic Liners That Won't Budge

Have you ever tried to do a traditional cat eye during the summer? If you haven’t, I’ll spare you the details. Just know that it's not pretty or fun. Change up your everyday look with these metallic, bronzed pencils that will give your eyes the perfect pop of color without looking overdone.

3. Lipsticks That Last Longer Than Your Summer Fling

That name hits a bit close to home – don’t you think? Kassajikian dished to Cosmopolitan about the meaning behind each of the unique names. "'Tower 1' is named after a lifeguard’s lookout tower on the beach—it's a sheer neutral with pink undertones that has a bronze-golden shimmer to it." Meanwhile, apparently "'Heatwave' has more of a metallic finish to it and leaves your lips with a glossy finish that’s more of a bronze hue, and '100 Degrees' is a gorgeous bright sheer shade that’s almost like a tinted lip balm.”

Let the countdown begin for summer… or summer makeup, at least.

A Guy From Texas Got Accepted To 20 Colleges With Full Rides To All Of Them & He's Your New Academic Inspo

Applying to college is not easy. After you've gathered the letters of rec, scraped together some cash for application fees and slaved over your personal statement for weeks, you still have to deal with the aftermath: potential rejection letters, sky-high tuition and applications to every scholarship you even remotely qualify for.

Luckily, the process is just as exciting as it is nerve-wracking, and for one Texas teen, the excitement was absolutely unreal when he got accepted to not one, but 20 different schools. And here's the kicker: he received full rides to all of them. (*sobbing*)

Chron.com reports that Michael Brown, a 17-year-old senior from Lamar High School in Houston, applied to 20 schools, including Ivy Leagues Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania. Accepted into all 20, he earned a full ride to each school and over $260,000 in scholarships.

With a 4.68 GPA and a list of extracurricular activities including volunteering and the debate team, the only one who seemed to be surprised in this situation was Brown himself. "It’s surprising I was accepted to all of them," said Brown after he received the last few acceptances, according to Chron.

"I’m very grateful, I’m very thankful," Berthinia Rutledge-Brown, Brown's mother, tells ABC News. "I know that he has done an amazing job, and I get to watch him every day. It’s just normal to me."

Brown gives much of the credit to his mother, who inspired the teen to work hard through her actions when she enrolled in Houston Community College to become a counselor when Brown was only eight or nine years old, according to Chron. "After she got divorced, she decided she needed to get a better job," Brown says.

"That’s the first time I understood what going to college might look like," Brown continued. "And seeing how important it was to my mom was important to me. I don’t even think she really knew that I saw, that it had an impact on me—but it did."

Brown, who became really serious about preparing for college at the end of ninth-grade, and plans to study political science or economics, according to his mother. He also wants to become involved with the debate team.

"I got very serious about finding ways to get extra-involved in my community and be prepared for college admissions when I got older," says Brown, who most recently worked on Mayor Sylvester Turner’s election campaign, according to Chron.

ABC News reports that Brown is a part of a program called EMERGE Fellowship, which aims to help and prepare "high-performing students from underserved communities" for getting into and graduating from select colleges and universities.

"He could throw a dart at any of the schools and he’s going to be just fine, so there’s no pressure coming from me," says Norman Clark, an EMERGE academic program director. "He has a track record of making great decisions. Now it’s up to Micheal."

Brown hasn't made a final decision yet, but Chron reports that he has narrowed his decision down to seven schools: Northwestern, Georgetown, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and Stanford. He thinks it'll come down to Harvard and Stanford.

Brown's ultimate goal is to go to law school, and from the looks of his track record, his future will be nothing but bright!

Science Says That You *Have* To Put In Some Serious Hours To Make Friends

Making new friends is a fun and exciting experience, but in the world of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the dynamic has certainly changed. However, a recent, first-of-its-kind study has been released from the University of Kansas according to Teen Vogue, and it reveals a huge factor in making friends. Here's a hint: it's not maintaining a Snapchat streak or tagging each other in memes.

No, unfortunately, interacting on social media is not the secret to making friends. The truth lies in time, and more importantly, time spent together on activities that you both enjoy. The study, which was released by Jeffrey Hall, an associate professor of Communications from the University of Kansas, explores the amount of time not only needed to make a friend, but to also move through the different stages. The study reports that "it takes roughly 50 hours of time together to move from mere acquaintance to casual friend, 90 hours to go from that stage to simple 'friend' status and more than 200 hours before you can consider someone your close friend."

Again, it's important that this time together is spent hanging out and doing fun activities, as Hall's study found that hours spent working together didn't count as much.

"We have to put that time in," Hall says. "You can’t snap your fingers and make a friend. Maintaining close relationships is the most important work we do in our lives—most people on their deathbeds agree."

And for those people out there who have over 2,000 Facebook friends or define themselves by the numbers, Hall also found from previous studies that the brain can only handle about 150 friendships. Hall says that “the amount of time and the type of activity shared with a partner can be thought of as strategic investments toward satiating long-term belongingness needs.”

Teen Vogue reports that Hall compiled this data from 355 responses to an online survey from adults who had moved in the last six months and are currently seeking out new friends. The adults responded to questions analyzing their new relationships and how much time was spent together, asking them to rate their relationships based on four categories: acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend. This helped him estimate the amount of time it took to move through each stage.

The second part of the study, where Hall surveyed 112 KU freshmen who had recently moved to Lawrence, helped reinforce this data. According to the press release, "He asked them about two people they had met since starting school two weeks before. Then he followed up with the respondents four and seven weeks later to see how that relationship had progressed."

The results of both these studies were combined, which concluded an estimate of 40 to 60 hours to establish a casual friendship, 80-100 hours to go to being friends and 200 hours to transition to good friends.

"You can’t make people spend time with you, but you can invite them," says Hall. "Make it a priority to spend time with potential friends. If you are interested in a friendship, switch up the context. If you work together, go to lunch or out for a drink. These things signal to people that you are interested in being friends with them."

The semester isn't over yet, so be bold and reach out to someone you've always wanted to become closer to!

If you’ve ever dreamed of living in Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s (like many of us Stranger Things fans definitely have) you don’t have to wait much longer.

This fall, Universal Studios in Orlando will be unveiling a haunted house maze based off the beloved Netflix series Stranger Things, according to The Orlando Sentinel. The maze will be an authentic recreation of season one, set in the iconic Upside Down, the Byer’s living room, and the sinister laboratory where Eleven was experimented on. It was also include appearances by the Demorgon and, of course, the kids.

Open for 34 select nights during Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights celebration (running from September 14 and November 3), the maze will surely be filling the void left in Stranger Things’ fan’s hearts after the end of season two.

While we wait for season three to premiere on Netflix, the haunted maze will take us back to the beginning — “You’ll faithfully follow the storyline,” of the first season, starting off in the seemingly-normal Hawkins, “and then ending up where things have gone terribly, terribly wrong” says Patrick Braillard (Universal Orlando’s show director).

Universal is working with Netflix and the show’s creators and executive producers the Duffer Brothers to make the show as authentic as possible. But the real question is— will Steve be there to hold our hands and guide us through the maze?

For Stranger Things fanatics, this is something you can’t miss. Watch the announcement video below and get ready to buy your tickets immediately.

What to Do If You Think Your SO May Have Given You an STI

On a list of all the awkward relationship conversations possible, talking to your partner after contracting a sexually transmitted infection might hold the number one spot. Whether it’s at the beginning of a new relationship, or you have been in a committed, exclusive relationship for a while, it’s far from an ideal situation. Not only is it a matter of health, it also opens the door to a lot of issues that you and your partner may not feel like addressing. But, no worries-we’re going to walk you through this stressful situation to help you overcome it in the easiest way possible.

How can I make this any less uncomfortable?

You can ameliorate the awkwardness if such a situation arises by addressing the subject before it actually becomes a problem. Discussing STIs and sexual history is important before entering a sexually active relationship.

“The discussion about STIs should be had with your partner prior to even beginning sexual relations,” advises Dr. Angela Jones, an OBGYN. “There needs to be a discussion about sexual history that includes sexual practices, preferences and any history of STIs.”

It may be uncomfortable to bring up, but it will help your relationship be more open and mature and make things way easier if you ever end up with an STI.

“If you’re not comfortable having this conversation, perhaps you shouldn't be having sex,” says Dr. Jones.

Okay, but what if it becomes reality?

But let’s say that it happens. You think something is going on down there and you’re freaking out. American Girl’s Care and Keeping of You only gave you so much advice. What do you do?

First things first: if you have any suspicion that you might have an STI, see a doctor. And let’s not buy into the stigmas surrounding STI’s either, okay?

“Getting an STD is just a part of life for many of people regardless of if they've engaged in one sexual experience or many,” says Dr. Maria Trent, a Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine, Public Health & Nursing.

And even if you aren’t showing symptoms, getting regularly tested isn’t a bad idea.

“I’ve encountered plenty of college women who assume all STDs show symptoms or that only 'promiscuous' women need to get tested,” explains Dr. Trent. “Women may also perceive that their partner is ‘safe’ because the partner doesn't have symptoms resulting in a decision not to use condoms. None of that is true! Many STDs won’t show symptoms.”

“If you think you’ve got an STI, see your physician and get some closure on that worry,” says April Masini, a relationship advice expert. “Consider waiting to have your doctor’s diagnosis before discussing this issue with your partner.”

While it’s important to discuss with your partner if you have an STI, it might be a good idea to make sure you’re certain before discussing.

“If it turns out you don’t have an STI, you may get both you and your partner worked into a tizzy without cause,” advises Masini.

However, if you have any suspicions about your sexual health, don’t have sexual interactions until you know you’re completely healthy.

Where can I go if I'm too embarrassed to see a doctor?

If you feel too uncomfortable to go see a doctor, there are also telemedicine services available.

“Most women can discreetly speak to a board-certified physician from home via HIPAA compliant video medicine apps on their cell phones or computers,” explains Dr. Cindy Duke of the Nevada Fertility Center. “There is no charge to download the app and cost for the visit is often on par or even less expensive than going to a brick and mortar clinic. Plus, many providers accept insurances.”

Dr. Duke is a member of ROWE (Reliable Online Wellness Experience) and says that telemedicine physicians are able to order testing for common STIs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and hepatitis. Additionally, the telemedicine provider can review safe sex practices and answer any questions you may have but felt afraid to ask her friends or another doctor.

Another great resource is through the American Sexual Health Association’s Yes Means Test campaign. “It features quick-and-easy STD facts, but without a shaming tone, explains Dr. Trent. “Most importantly, individuals can perform a search on the site to find a clinic to access free and confidential testing.”

How do I break the news?

Once you have confirmed that you have an STI and your health care provider has given you treatment instructions, it’s time to have “the talk”.

“You need to discuss this openly and honestly with your partner,” says Heidi McBain, a professional women’s health counselor. “Find a quiet space where you can share what your medical doctor told you. Then give your partner time to process the information and time to speak about what you just disclosed.”

If you’ve been diagnosed and are sexually active with your partner, it’s likely they also need to be tested. Then, you can discuss the potential source of the STI.

“This diagnosis is a good way to broach the subject of how things need to change to avoid putting yourselves in harm’s way when it comes to safe sex,” explains Marsini.

How can our relationship move past this?

Obviously, this situation isn’t ideal, but it doesn’t need to be the end of the relationship.

“Avoid pointing fingers, blaming each other or creating drama,” Marsini continues. “This isn’t a great topic of conversation, but if you’re having sex, you need to be able to discuss these uncomfortable topics.”

Dr. Trent also encourages college women to put the situation in perspective: STD’s are actually very common among college students, and one in two people will get one before the age of 25.

“Nobody who tests positive is really alone,” she says. “Additionally, sharing the news is a proactive and healthy way to take care of her personal health and the health of her partner. It’s better to be up-front and honest.”

Related: 5 Signs it's Time to Define the Relationship

Maybe this discussion leads to the ominous “define the relationship” moment, or maybe it’s the turning point of a long-term relationship, for better or worse. It’s also a chance to discuss exclusivity and where both you and your partner stand.

“This is a time to talk about monogamy or if you agree that you’re not going to be monogamous, protection,” says Marsini. “If you’re not on the same page, this diagnosis is an opportunity to gain some clarity about how you feel, your partner feels and your reactions to each other’s feelings on monogamy.”

At best, you can turn a bad situation into an opportunity for relationship growth. However, ideally, you could reach a point in your relationship where you don’t need a health scare to force you to discuss sexual health and history. To avoid this, discuss barrier methods and use protection to prevent the spread and contraction of STIs.

“A conversation early on, and practicing safe sex by including barrier methods can save a lot of future heartache,” says Dr. Jones.

In the end, it's a matter of both you and your partner's health. So even if it's cringe-worthy for you to even think about, be open with your partner about sexual health, get tested regularly, and if you are one of the 50% who have to deal with an STI, you're definitely not alone.

On Tuesday, Leighton Meester's hair went from Blair Waldorf brunette to Serena Van Der Woodsen blonde. She went completely platinum, and even chopped a few inches off!

"I don’t even feel comfortable saying that I just went blonde. It is a totally different color of hair!” Meester said to People. "But I love it!"

Aura Friedman led the process (which apparently took seven hours!) at Nexxus New York Hair Salon.

"I like to try different things and experiment," Meester said. "So when I wanted to change my hair, I just thought, "I should just completely go for it!'" And after scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, she did!

Props to her for having the courage to make such a bold move. It definitely paid off.

News helps us reminisce on Channing and Jenna’s picturesque love story (after all their love story basically apotheosized love itself), we don’t think our emotionally unavailable hearts can handle any more celebrity breakups. (Can we postpone any other potential celeb breakups until March 52, 2019?)

A Female Gunman Shot & Wounded Three People At YouTube's Headquarters Before Taking Her Own Life

On Tuesday afternoon, a woman allegedly shot and wounded three people before taking her own life at the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California. According to The New York Times, she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The three victims were transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where one of them — a 36-year-old man — was in critical condition. The other two were women, ages 27 and 32.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said the investigation is ongoing, and the shooter's motive is unclear. "We know very, very little right now, and we probably won't know more until tomorrow morning," Barberini said.

However, law enforcement officials told CNN the shooter is believed to have known at least one of the victims.

More than 1,100 people work at the YouTube office where the shooting occurred. Numerous employees took to Twitter during and after the incident.

President Trump also used Twitter, posting a message expressing his thoughts and prayers to those involved.

Additional people, such as politicians and celebrities, sent their condolences to the victims, with some calling for stricter gun control laws. This included a trauma surgeon who treated the victims from Tuesday's shooting.

"To think that after we've seen Las Vegas, Parkland, the Pulse nightclub shooting, that we would see an end to this, but we have not," said Dr. Andre Campbell, an attending trauma surgeon at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

"Gun violence happens every day throughout the United States. It happens here in San Francisco. It happens in the Bay Area. It happens all over the country," Dr. Campbell said, adding that he thinks the media doesn't pay attention to other gun violence.

"I don't have all the answers ... at least we're having a discussion about it nationally," he said. "This is a real problem."

Google, which owns YouTube, released a statement about the shooting on Tuesday evening.

"I know a lot of you are in shock right now," said Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO. "Over the coming days, we will continue to provide support to help everyone in our Google family heal from this unimaginable tragedy."

He added that Google is actively monitoring and working with local authorities and hospitals.

How Much Influence Should Your Parents Have On Your College Choice?

College is supposed to be the best time of your life, right? After visiting school after school, filling out application after application, and writing essay after essay, college better be the best time of your life. We’re sure that your hard work paid off, and you have a variety of colleges to choice from, but there’s one problem: you parents have an opinion of their own. Of course, they want what’s best for you; however, it can be extremely overwhelming to have multiple voices trying to weigh in about one of the most important decisions of your life. If you’re not sure how much to take your parents’ perspectives into account, find out what others have to say about conundrum.

The parental perspective

For a good portion of your life, your parents have made decisions for you. You didn’t get to choose what elementary school you went to, but now that you’ve gone through the college application process, it’s your time to make a life-altering choice about your education. During the application process, your parents may have simply driven you to tours and let you take the reins. Now that decision time has come around, they’ve suddenly become extremely eager to share their opinions.

J.D. Rothman, author of the satirical LA Times bestseller, The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to College Admissions, sarcastically explains that while you have a million different factors to consider, your parents’ opinions are definitely one of the more important ones.

“If you've patented a cure for bunions or sold your app to Google, then you might not have to consider your parents' opinion,” she says. “But if they're writing the check, listen to their musings, especially because they do have a reasonable idea of what will bring you happiness. If you hear them out now, later you can base your decision on whether there's a nearby Chipotle, a chance to paint yourself blue, or a roommate with VIP connections at Coachella.”

Rothman has been through the college application and decision process with her son, so she knows what it’s like to watch a child make one of the most important decisions of their lives. It’s understandable that parents would want to guide their 18-year-old away from mistakes they made at that age. Especially if you’re their first-born or only child, it can be hard to come to terms with the fact that you’re growing up and moving on with your life.

Steven Goodman, an educational consultant, admissions strategist, author and television talk host, thinks it also comes down to parents trying to recreate their own college experiences for their child.

“I think students need to respect the college experience that their parents had,” he advises. “They are talking about where they went to college because that was their college experience. Even if students want to have their own experience, they need to acknowledge their parents’ experiences...to show that they’re taking the [decision] seriously [and] that they’re not just choosing a place based on where their boyfriend or girlfriend goes.”

It’s important to remember that your parents’ perspectives are valid in some way, but in turn, they have to realize the same thing about yours.

The student perspective

If you have a best friend or a close group of friends, chances are you’ve asked for their advice on pretty much every topic under the sun, from how to settle a dispute with your SO to what color of pumps to buy for prom. Your friends are happy to intervene and solve all your life’s problems. However, college decisions can be a tricky topic to discuss because of a multitude of factors including prestige, cost and distance. Even if you’re confident in your friends’ ability to listen and agree with you, it’s optimal to consider both sides of the issue, so we spoke with two collegiettes with two slightly different philosophies

Julie Plummer, a sophomore at Stanford University, believes it’s important to make your own decision but also to respect your parents’ opinions. “I think the decision should be mainly in the hands of the student. Choosing your college is a really exciting time,” she says. “It’s also a great opportunity to evaluate what’s important to you in terms of academics as well as social and physical environment.”

“That being said, I do think parents can have an important role in the college decision of their kids, just in terms of support and advice while students are making their own decisions.”

Maddie*, a sophomore at Penn State University, completely agrees with Julie. “My parents really wanted me to go to their alma mater, but I wanted to stay in state,” she says. “I sat them down and explained calmly that it was my decision to make and that I appreciated their enthusiasm.”

On the other hand, Erin*, a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, believes that her parents’ persistent guidance is the reason for her current happiness and success.

“I remember some of my friends complaining about their parents’ nagging about attending a specific school, but I didn’t say anything in response,” she says. “I have such a strong relationship with my parents that their support for my college decision meant more to me than anything else. Even though I’m thousands of miles away from my home, their pushing me to a school that would challenge me and give me the greatest chance for success is the reason I’m thriving.”

Whether or not you agree with these collegiettes, you know your relationship with the parents best.

The decision

After weighing the perspectives of both experts and students, we want to let you in on a little secret. It’s your decision to choose how much your parents’ opinions mean to your college decision. We can’t deny that it’s pretty #meta, but you have to realize that you know your relationship with your parents best. Will they care if you disregard their input? Will they become angry or disappointed? Will they support any decision you make? Every situation is different, and no matter how many people give you advice, you’re the only who can gauge the outcome of what you decide to do. Whether you’re nervous or confident about your decision, keep the conversation with your parents open and calm. You can’t go wrong with that.

HC Wake-Up Call: President Trump Still Under Investigation But Not A "Criminal Target," Meanwhile He Floated The Idea of Deploying Soldiers To The US-Mexico Border, & Facebook Removed More Russian Accounts

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

President Trump's Lawyers Were Told He's Still Under Investigation, But Is Not A Criminal Target

In what seems to be an attempt to get Trump to sit for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, his team told Trump's lawyers that the president is a subject — but not a target — in the ongoing investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

The Washington Post first reported the news, adding that Mueller is allegedly preparing a report about Trump's actions while in office and potential obstruction of justice.

According to the report, some of Trump's advisors are eager for the interview since his "risk of criminal jeopardy is low." Others are hesitant because an interview could turn him into a target even though he's currently only a subject. The Post explains the difference here.

Facebook Bans More Than 200 New Russian Accounts

The social media network removed a slew of accounts and pages that were "linked to Russian trolls that had attempted to influence U.S. politics around the time of the 2016 election,"The Hill reports. 65 Instagram (which Facebook owns) accounts were also removed.

Though this round of deleted profiles only included a little more than 200, their influence was still large. According to The Hill, "More than one million Facebook users followed at least one of the now deleted pages and 493,000 Instagram users followed at least one of the now deleted accounts." The pages and accounts spent a collective $167,000 on advertising.

The move is the latest in Facebook's continued reckoning with fake news and Russian influencers. Just last month it was revealed that a research firm which worked with President Trump's campaign stole data from 50 million Facebook users

President Trump Wants To Deploy The Military To The U.S.-Mexican Border Until A Wall Is Built

On Tuesday, Trump told reporters, "We are going to be guarding our border with our military. That's a big step." A BuzzFeed News correspondent said that Trump was asked to clarify what he meant, and in response, Trump repeated a "lie that we don't have border laws" and a "vague line that the 'military' will 'secure our borders.'"

It was unclear whether or not Trump knew that both of his predecessors deployed the National Guard on border control missions. Texas governor Rick Perry did too, in 2014.

According to a CBS News reporter, Mexico's U.S. ambassador reached out to the State Department for clarity on Trump's plans for the military at the border.

Despite continued questions from reporters, Trump wouldn't further clarify any specific plans.

New Zealand Singer Robinson Opens Up About Her New Single 'Nothing to Regret' (Exclusive Q&A)

If you’re looking for a new jam to add to your Spotify playlist, check out Robinson’s new single, “Nothing to Regret.” At only 21 years old, Robinson has added yet another uniquely catchy track to her collection that includes “Don’t You Forget About Me” and “Crave You.”

The New Zealand native has been writing music since her teens and had the chance to open for pop singer Meg Mac on her Australian tour this past fall. Her Campus reached out to Robinson to discuss the success of her new single, how she approaches songwriting and where she’d like to see her music career in the future.

Her Campus: Your new single, “Nothing to Regret,” has almost 3 million streams. Did you think it would become so popular so quickly? What has the experience been watching the popularity grow in the last month?

Robinson: It’s been absolutely unreal knowing that so many people have heard the song and I just can’t believe it. I don’t think you can ever anticipate what a song might do, but now it’s out in the world...it’s going on these adventures and reaching parts of the world I’ve never been to yet, and to me, that’s insanely amazing.

HC: We absolutely love the music video for “Nothing to Regret.” What was your favorite part of making the video? Is there anything you didn’t enjoy about the process?

R: The making of the music video of “Nothing To Regret” was so much fun and really pushed me as a person. I absolutely love dancing around the house and letting loose but to do it in front of a film crew was definitely something I was a little bit nervous about. However, before the scene Morgan Gruer (the director) and I hyped the mood and I just went crazy and danced my heart out. One day, I hope we can edit together a blooper reel!

HC: What kind of music did you grow up listening to? Has it influenced your current style in any way?

R: I grew up listening to a lot of different music. Ranging from singer-songwriter folk, disco pop, alternative rock, soul and pop music, of course. I think listening to such a wide variety of music has made me realize in myself, that vulnerability and honesty is the best way to approach music and if I’m not being honest about how I feel, then I don’t really think I’m doing my job properly. Those musicians made me feel! And I want to have that effect on other people also.

HC: What’s the last song you listened to? What’s the song you listen to the most?

R: The last song I listened to was Bon Iver – “Heavenly Father.” The song I listen to most...now that’s hard but I think it would be “All Flowers In Time Bend Towards the Sun” by Jeff Buckley featuring vocals of Liz Fraser...it really takes me to a different planet. I love how raw the recording is, how Liz giggles at the end and acts like she hasn’t just been part of creating the most magical thing.

HC: If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

R: If I could collaborate with anyone dead or alive...it would definitely be Jeff Buckley. I find him so interesting and I would have loved to of just seen him play live...I find him very mysterious and very captivating through his music.

HC: What’s your process for writing a song like?

R: My process for writing a song changes every time I approach it. Sometimes I’ll be walking down the street and have an idea for a melody and if I’ve forgotten my phone to record the idea...it’s a real panic until I get back home to record it. I can’t talk to anyone in case I forget it! Sometimes, it’ll be a lyric or word that inspires me. Perhaps a line that I base the whole story around. Otherwise, it’ll be a melody I get playing the piano...or sometimes it all comes together at once. Just depends on the day.

HC: Where do you imagine yourself in five years? Is there anything you’re dying to accomplish?

R: I just want to be making music I’m really proud of, and to always be super open to change and experimentation. I want to always be learning, to be honest and vulnerable within my music and never shy away from telling my truth. In five years I’d love to be writing albums, playing live shows and to keep traveling the world with my music! To do music as a job makes me feel so, so lucky.

Your favorite red-head isn't just in Riverdale anymore. Fox has reportedly replaced YouTuber Kian Lawley with KJ Apa for the role in The Hate U Give, according to HelloGiggles.

Lawley was fired from his role just a couple months ago, as Entertainment Weekly noted after a video of the influencer surfaced where he was making racist remarks. But, have no fear, KJ Apa is here, and he's ready to step up to the plate.

Since Lawley's firing, he has come out with a video response, which he posted on his personal YouTube channel, apologizing for his past actions. The star also tweeted about his firing, saying that he's "learned a lot."

The movie, based on the book by the same name by Angie Thomas, revolves around a young black female, Starr Carter who witnesses her childhood best friend, Khalil, get shot and killed by a police officer. Carter decides to fight for justice for her late friend. Apa will play Carter's boyfriend, Chris.

Thomas, who previously mentioned how painful the situation surrounding Lawley was, gave Apa a shoutout via Twitter in light of his hiring for the film.

As a fan of Riverdale, I'm excited to see Apa in a different role, not to mention on the big screen. Congrats, Archiekins.

4 Ways Your Body is Telling You You’re Stressed

$

0

Classes, internships, jobs and graduation on top of everything else you have going on can truly put a lot of pressure on any college student. These stress-inducing factors really take a toll on both our mental physical health. You may not always associate stress with physical health, but sometimes your body needs to give you the signal to take care of yourself. Finding these signs are not always easy, and can vary from person to person, but we’re here to help you identify the most common ones.

1. Your body temperature rises during a stressful situation

Have you ever thought about why you break a sweat when giving a speech or preparing to talk to your boss? Jessica Plocher, a psychiatric nurse practitioner who works for Philadelphia Health Services, says that when stressful situations arise, your body can be the first to react.

According to Plocher,“Stressful situations can trigger a multitude of physical responses including sweating, flushing, shaking, dry mouth, restlessness, shortness of breath or tightness in the chest, light-headedness, frequent urination or diarrhea, increased heart rate.”

So if you do find yourself sweating through your blazer before a big presentation or your heart feels like it’s going to come out of your chest during a fight with a friend, it’s your body letting you know you need to calm down.

2. You’ve been losing hair, weight and sleep

When life gets stressful, it can be easy to ignore the signs your body is giving you. In return, our bodies suffer for it. Stress can cause you to stay awake thinking about your problems, reduce your appetite and cause poor nutrition.

“Long-term stress is associated with physical symptoms such as hair loss, gastrointestinal problems, weight gain or loss, sleep disturbance and fatigue,” says Plocher.

Making sure that you address your stress when you see signs of it, especially ones like drastic weight and sleep loss, is important so that it does not turn into a broader problem that may affect your life in different areas.

Related: How to Deal with Stress & Anxiety in Your 20s

3. You just can’t concentrate

"If getting through your calculus homework or focusing on your biology lab has been getting harder each time you have to do it, then your body is definitely trying to tell you there’s something else you need to address before you can study," Plocher says. “Experiencing poor concentration, memory problems, indecision and mood lability is common.”

Mood lability is another term for mood swings, which can affect your ability to focus on what’s important by taking you from drastic highs and ultimate lows in terms of your mood.

When little things like deciding what you want to eat for dinner, or reading a news article seem impossible because your mind is all over the place, then you may be stressed.

4. You’ve been diagnosed with other illnesses

Just like losing weight and hair, your body can give you signs of stress in other ways too. If you’ve been making more frequent trips to the doctor and getting diagnosed with anything from the flu to mood disorders, then it could be your stress affecting your immune system and mental health.

Plocher says, “Chronic stress is also associated with the development of anxiety and mood disorders, increased substance use, frequent illness and cardiovascular disease.”

Being stressed seems like a natural part of life, but ongoing stress can cause major problems for you and your body.

“In my opinion, the signs our bodies give us signaling stress are not so much ignored as misinterpreted,” says Plocher. “Increasing understanding of the relationship between mind and body and the impact of stress on physical and mental health is essential in mitigating stress, relieving symptoms and improving self-care.”

If you see your body exhibiting any of these signs, find out if your school has a counseling center, or mental health support groups for students under stress. If you want help outside of the school environment, apps like “Calm” can walk you through mindful activities to reduce your stress.. As always, check in with your doctor to see how they can help you cope with stress.

In Case 2018 Wasn't Terrifying Enough, Ohio's Got 'Zombie' Raccoons To Deal With

CBS News reported on “zombie-like” raccoons spotted in northeast Ohio that are currently under police investigation. There have been over a dozen reports from citizens over the last 3 weeks about raccoons acting strangely during the day. These nocturnal animals are not usually out during the day, which makes their behavior even stranger.

Robert Coggeshall, an Ohio photographer, told CBS about his experience with the raccoons. The raccoon “would stand up on his hind legs, which I've never seen a raccoon do before, and he would show his teeth and then he would fall over backward and go into almost a comatose condition,” he said.

The police came to euthanize that raccoon and 14 other ones reported to Ohio police, according to CBS. The Ohio Department of natural Resources suspects that the raccoons have been suffering from a viral disease, distemper, that makes them sick and causes them to lose any fear of humans.

Vice noted the similarities between the viral disease the raccoons are facing and traditional theories about zombies. Both viruses are incurable and attack the brain, causing hysteria, with little warning. Hopefully, we wont end up in an episode of The Walking Dead featuring these creepy creatures.
