At least three people were killed when a truck drove into a crowd of pedestrians on a busy street in the center of Stockholm, Sweden on Friday afternoon.
Many more pedestrians were injured in the attack, which occurred on a street popular with tourists and shoppers. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven believes it was a terror attack, BuzzFeed News reports. “Sweden has been attacked,” Löfven said. “Everything indicates this a terror attack.”
The truck used in the attack is owned by a local brewery, and was hijacked during a delivery, according to BuzzFeed News. “Someone jumped into the driver’s cabin and drove off with the vehicle while the driver was unloading,” a brewery spokesperson said.
The driver of the truck is currently not in custody, but the Swedish authorities have started looking for the suspect. The Swedish Security Service is also looking into whether more people were involved in the attack, according to CNN. Police have released a blurry photo of a man who is a person of interest.
The area, including Parliament and the Stockholm subway, were on lockdown and train services were halted.
An eyewitness, Veronica Durango, told CNN that the driver “put his foot on the gas and ran through the crowd.” “It was like he was driving through paper,” Durango said. “It’s like it was nothing. I can’t even believe how a person could do such a thing. And then he just kept on going. I was in shock.”
Former Swedish Prime Minster Carl Bildt responded to the attack on Twitter, noting a trend in terrorist attacks.
Steal a lorry or a car and then drive it into a crowd. That seems to be the latest terrorist method. Berlin. London. Now Stockholm.
