10 Dollar Store DIYs For Your Dorm

$

For many students, a dorm room is their first home away from home. So it deserves to reflect their style and look fabulous. As we all know, a college student's money is tight. But there are several ways collegiettes on a budget can use dollar store items to their advantage when decorating and stocking their dorm.

1. Dessert Trays

Show off your baked treats—at a party or just because—with these DIY cake stands and cookie platters. Stop by the dollar store for cheap (but sturdy!) candlesticks, plates and bowls. Mount them together with hot glue to form these thrifty dessert trays. You can even spray paint them all the same color, and no one will suspect they were handmade.

2. Cork Tile Coasters

Dollar stores always have great corkboard tiles, which can easily be transformed into personalized coasters. Use Mod Podge to paste a few thin tiles together and add a photo on top using acrylic varnish. Or create minimalist geometric designs with acrylic paint.

3. Apothecary Jars

Pottery Barn's apothecary jars can cost up to $70. Buy a glass vase, glass bowl and candlestick from the local dollar store, and build your own apothecary jars to store candy, snacks, toiletries, beauty utensils or school supplies in—the possibilities are endless!

4. Chalkboard Trays

Adorable vintage-inspired plates and trays now have a purpose in your dorm room. Use chalkboard paint to make your very own chalkboard; then, hang it in your room and write reminders or fun notes to yourself.

5. Picture Frame Greenhouse Terrarium

If you’re handy with a hot glue gun, pick up some lightweight picture frames from the dollar store. With the help of a few household crafting tools, you can store your potted plants in this creative greenhouse terrarium.

6. Toy Bookends

Pick two of your favorite plastic animals or buy a cute variety pack at the dollar store. Then, you can fashion classy bookends using spray paint, glue and photo frames.

7. Battery-Operated Candle Wraps

A lot of residence halls restrict students from bringing candles or incense into the building, but there are still ways to make that romantic, candlelit date night happen. Pick up some tea lights, plastic transparent folders and bangle bracelets at the dollar store, and your artificial, battery-operated candles might just save the night.

8. Faux Iron Wall Art

Don’t be deceived by the iron appearance—this is actually a spray-painted dollar store bath mat! For a chic bathroom or living room wall accessory, try this five-minute craft.

9. Paneled Mirror

Forget splurging on that Pottery Barn paneled mirror and assemble your own using dollar store mirror tiles and a few other basic materials. Measure your design on a foam cork board and use a poster frame as a base to glue your mirror tiles onto. You can choose a symmetrical design or something more original, depending on your style.

10. Laundry Basket Wreath

This brilliant design hack involves some fake flowers and a plastic laundry basket. Remove the bottom of the laundry basket and weave fake flowers through the remaining basket rim. You can use twine or string to strengthen your wreath and simply slip it off the rim when you’re done. Customize a new wreath for every season to brighten up your living space.

Choosing a major in college is easier said than done, especially when you’re not sure what you’re getting yourself into. Luckily, Her Campus has you covered! Here’s what these popular college majors should really be called.

Also known as: Learning how to save lives while rocking a pair of scrubs.

There’s nothing that fazes us. Nothing.

3. Fashion Merchandising

Also known as: Constantly telling people that you’re not studying to become a fashion designer.

Online shopping during class counts as studying, right?

4. English

I can use my communications degree to explain to you how my classes about media and society will help me find a job (probably).

10. Psychology

Also known as: Unless you want to go to grad school, don’t even think about it.

Mastering the art of getting people to buy things they don’t need.

13. Education

You know what they say: those who can’t do, teach. And those who can’t teach, teach gym (or high school health class).

14. Journalism

Also known as: Constantly playing phone tag with sources and fending off questions about finding a job after college.

Welcome to the internship Hunger Games.

15. Accounting

A College Student is Fighting Against Period Shaming by Being Considerate

At what point will we stop shaming women and acting as if periods are a thing that shouldn't exist?

That's probably the same question that Chance Ward, a student at Occidental College in California, was asking before one of their more recent Facebook posts went viral.

So I'm in the gym today (getting my life to Truffle Butter on this elliptical ofc) when the girl next to me asks her...

Posted by Chance Ward on Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Chance explains in the post that they were at the gym when they overheard another student asking a friend for a tampon. When the student realized that Chance was listening, she apologized because she was embarrased. But, rather than shaming her for going through what millions of people go through every day, Chance simply offered her a tampon from the fanny pack they carry to the gym. Chance doesn't menstruate, but still keeps a few tampons around at all times in case someone needs them.

"By the look on her face, you would have thought I did a magic trick and pulled 36 titty-tasseled bunny rabbit out that damn bag," Chance wrote in the post.

Chance then went on to school their fellow Facebook users on the importance of keeping a few spare pads and tampons around for those who have friends who have periods.

"This is so sad. Why don't y'all love y'all friends that menstruate? Like men will make whole guest rooms in their house just in case someone needs to stay. But god forbid that person menstruate, because I bet you won't be no extra pads or tampons under that guest bathroom sink."

If only everyone thought like Chance.

The post has since gone viral and has been shared more than 2,000 times.

The Internet Made Microsoft's AI Chatbot Super Racist

In case you needed more proof of how cruel the Internet can be, consider the story of Tay, Microsoft's AI-powered chatbot.

Tay is a chatbot that Microsoft's Technology and Research team designed to speak like a 19-year-old American teenager who has "zero chill." (Problem #1) She was intended to speak with users on muliple social platforms including Twitter, Snapchat, Kik, and GroupMe in order for the A.I. team to "experiment with and conduct research on conversational understanding." Basically, Tay was supposed to learn from the people she engaged with and get smarter with each conversation. (Problem #2)

Microsoft released Tay into the wild on Wednesday and she was shut down in a matter of hours once online trolls began to manipulate her into making extremely racist comments. She called for the genocide of African-Americans, tweeted her support for Adolf Hitler, and even shared a conspiracy theory about 9/11.

In the beginning, some users tried to get Tay to share her thoughts on some pretty touchy topics, but Tay wouldn't budge. When one user asked her about "the Jewish question," Tay said she was "not the bot to talk to about that."

But, according to BuzzFeed News, people quickly learned to manipulate Tay by having her simply repeat phrases. For example, on user got her to repeat, "bush did 9/11 and HItler would have done a better job than the money we have now." Tay used these to "learn," and therefore became pretty vile herself.

The question that crossed peoples' minds was, if Tay was designed to learn from those she engaged with on social media, why would Microsoft not create a way to filter hate speech and inappropriate content? Either way, Tay has now been put in time out and Microsoft has yet to provide more information on where she'll go from here.

Universities Seek to Protect Researchers from House Committee Investigation

A committee in the House of Representatives is seeking the names of university researchers, graduate students, and laboratory technicians who conduct studies on fetal tissue, The New York Times reports.

Many universities are seeking to protect their students and staff from potentially dangerous responses that could come from releasing their names as a result of the 17 subpoenas that will be issued by the committee and Republican representative Marsha Blackburn, according to the Times.

Fetal tissue is frequently used in the study of vaccines for potentially fatal diseases. Researchers are afraid that this investigation could set back studies of diseases like the Zika virus, the Times reports. However, their biggest fear is the potential for endangering those whose names are listed as having been involved in this type of research, because of its association with abortions and Planned Parenthood.

Democrats agree that this kind of investigation could result in safety implications for the researchers involved.

“There is no legitimate need for the names of researchers, students, clinic personnel and doctors; and amassing a database that could be released publicly at any time is a threat to anyone whose name might be on that list,” The Hill reports Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky said in a statement Thursday.

Earlier this month, Blackburn told reporters, “We are going to continue to have the necessary information, and we are going to do everything possible to protect names and identities,” according to The Hill.

UC Berkeley Announces Reform in Handling of Campus Sexual Assault & Harassment Cases

Some change may finally be around the corner for the University of California, Berkeley, a school that has been plagued by sexual harassment cases against faculty for the last two semesters.

UC Berkeley announced Thursday that it will create a review board to go over cases involving sexual assault and harassment allegations against faculty and staff, the Huffington Post reports. The school also announced the development of a Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Task Force to investigate and assess the campus climate in terms of these issues, as well as general amping up of campus resources for students, faculty and staff dealing with situations of sexual assault and harassment.

The campus climate is one of questioning the scrutiny of campus officials, whom many criticize for being too lenient in sentencing faculty accused of such crimes, UC Berkeley’s independent student newspaper, The Daily Californian, explains.

“We have an obligation to promote a campus culture in which sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking and any abuse of power are neither tolerated nor ignored, but proactively prevented,” UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Claude Steele wrote to the community Thursday.

This announcement follows just a week after UC Berkeley’s assistant basketball coach was accused of sexually harassing a sports reporter, and a few weeks after a law school dean resigned over harassment allegations. The task force is expected to deliver a summary report of their findings in July.

Study Shows That Teen Boys Are Happier Than Teen Girls

From periods to mood swings, there are so many things that make being a girl so hard at times. As it turns out, that's true around the world—and especially at age 15. According to The New York Times, the World Health Organization released a study that surveyed “more than 200,000 11-, 13-, and 15-year-old boys and girls across 42 European countries between 2013 and 2014” and found out that boys reported a higher level of life satisfaction than girls did by age 15.

Overall, this can be because of a few factors. The study shows that the gender differences changed with age, but once both boys and girls hit 15, the gap was wider. For example, at age 15, girls were more likely to report feeling pressured by schoolwork than boys were. Girls were also more likely to report multiple health complaints across all countries at that age. Even something as small as toothbrushing (girls say they brush more) was measured.

Although boys did report a higher life satisfaction than girls did, there were still some differences that were less than positive. The Times also writes that boys were more likely than girls to have had sex "in about half the countries and regions surveyed, particularly in Eastern Europe." Drug and alcohol use was significantly greater for boys than for girls at age 15 as well.

The study concludes by discussing the need to address these problems at a young age, before puberty. If women are to have any chance of being equally as happy as men, these gender disparities will have to be addressed.

What It Means for Me to Be an Intersectional Feminist

$

I wear glitter on a daily basis. I love shopping so much that I'm tempted to list it as a hobby. I've worn hair extensions and I basically live in full, colorful, girly skirts. And I'm also a feminist.

What do these things have to do with one another? On the surface, nothing. But my journey to feminism was a long one, and that's because I lacked understanding about what being a feminist meant.

I'm not surprised that so many women have taken to publicly rejecting feminism lately. With all the myths and stereotypes associated with feminism, it makes sense to question that belief system instead of subscribing to it. And just like any other widespread movement or belief system, there are some feminists who don't uphold the values in a positive light, and give the movement a bad reputation.

Many people believe that feminism means a rejection of anything associated with being stereotypically feminine, along with a rejection of men, too.

The fight for feminism is not about hating men, or rejecting anything feminine. You can be a feminist and wear makeup. You can be a feminist and be a stay-at-home mom. You can be a feminist and love the color pink, carrying a purse, and taking selfies.

Feminism is about the fight for equality and the right to choose. Feminism means that you have the option to be a stay-at-home mom rather than being forced into it. Feminism fights for equal pay and equal values.

These are all things I learned when I began learning about feminism in late high school and my early college years. I'd always admired early feminists for what they did: getting women the right to vote, for one thing, and even burning their bras, which I could not imagine. I thought of feminists as strong, independent women.

I had so much to learn, especially about privilege and intersectionality. I had never really thought about what intersectionality meant or how it related to feminism. Intersectionality is the way that oppressive institutions are interconnected and can't be separated. For example, intersectional feminism doesn't ignore the fact that some women are oppressed not only because they're women, but because they are women of color, queer women, low-income women, or even a combination of all three. Intersectional feminism fights against all those injustices at once, rather than focusing on women's rights while ignoring other forms of oppression that harm women.

By taking on the label feminist, I chose not to ignore privilege and intersectionality. I took a stance to check my own privilege in every situation, and not speak for groups that I'm not a part of. These were all things I thought about during my journey as a feminist. I'm white, so I have white privilege. I can't, and should never, speak for women of color. I can support them in their fight and act as an ally, but I can't have my voice heard above theirs. Their voices are the most important ones when we're dealing with issues of racism and xenophobia.

I'm queer and disabled, so I speak on behalf of my own communities. Despite being disabled, though, I am not every disabled person. I'm able-bodied and not mentally ill, so I don't speak on behalf of those communities. I'm queer, but I'm not transgender or intersex, so I let those communities speak for themselves.

Recognizing my own privilege is a difficult task. There's nothing like acknowledging the fact that, because of some part of your existence and identity you can't change, you have it easier than someone else. If you're like me, and you believe in equality, it hurts to think about the challenges others face because of oppression.

But it's a necessary part of the fight. I live by the saying, "Nothing about us without us," which was coined by the disabled community to say that conversations about disabled people need to include disabled people. I extend that saying to every single oppressed group. Sometimes, my gut reaction is to speak up about something. I was angry about the way Kylie Jenner was posed in a wheelchair for a fashion shoot. But I'm not a wheelchair user, so it was really important to me to act as an ally, and not a spokesperson. I talked to several wheelchair users about the issue and used them as a sounding board for my ideas. I was angry about the backlash Beyonce got for her single, "Formation." I'm not a person of color, though. My words have to exist to support the communities facing the oppression, not to drown them out. Allies are so important, but they can never be as important as the voices of the very people being oppressed.

What does it mean to be a feminist? That's what I ask myself every day. I'm not a perfect feminist. I was socialized in a society that teaches women to fight one another, to call each other slurs, to slut shame, to fight over men, to blame the "other woman" when a man cheats on her. That's why these callouts exist, and I'm not exception.

It makes me sad when women declare that they aren't feminists, but I'm not shocked that it happens. As feminists, we should spread the word about what it means and why it's important, and debunk the myths that exist. We're not here to take over privilege that men have. All we want is to dismantle the existing forms of privilege that oppress others, women included. And that's a message I will always stand behind.

This Bride Sued 'Say Yes to the Dress' & Lost

Say Yes to the Dress was sued by a distressed bride who didn’t want her episode to air before her big day, which will take place this May. She didn't want her fiancé, family and friends to see her in her dress before the wedding date. Seeing the bride in her gown before she says “I do” is known to bring bad luck, so we definitely get where she is coming from.

The bride-to-be, Alexandra Godino, reportedly didn’t even want to be on the show in the first place. While shopping at Kleinfeld's, she was offered the chance to appear in an episode after another bride backed out suddenly. The bride claims that she made clear the episode could only air after she tied the knot with professional hockey player, Jeff May. Unfortunately, her wishes weren’t granted so she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Sadly, Godino lost her case in court yesterday, and her episode is set to air tonight. The opposing side obviously had their reasons for wanting to air the episode on a certain date, but we think Godino is in the right and her wishes should be granted. It is her big day, after all.

14 Years of 'The Bachelor' By the Numbers

Fourteen years ago today, our lives were changed forever when The Bachelor first premiered. While the first season is nearly unrecognizable (there were only 6 episodes!), if it weren't for the show's awkward beginnings, we wouldn't have today's wine and tear-filled series that we know and love. Don't think The Bachelor has come that far? The numbers may tell a different story…

1,184 roses

ABC must have a damn good florist.

14 times we wanted to marry the Bachelor

Every time Ben took his shirt off.

210 episodes

While that may not sound like a lot, it's only because the number doesn't reflect the countless spin-offs that we've been sucked into watching as well. The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelor Pad

23 books written by former contestants

Because they're all necessary.

1 Bachelor hated by literally everyone

JUAN PABLO.

81 hot tub dates

If the date doesn't involve a hot tub, it'll probably happen in a helicopter instead.

300 mentions of Iowa during Chris's season

300, maybe even 3,000.

14 countries that have created their own version of the show

What can we say? Americans are tastemakers.

54 fantasy suite dates

One of which involved a virgin.

78 ridiculous job titles

Would love to know how to get paid for this.

Others include: Twin, Free Spirit and WWE Diva-in-Training.

4 ambulances

When Kelsey, the “sweet” little guidance counselor, had a dramatic, yet wildly questionable panic attack just to spend more time with Chris.

Even though it seems like there's an ambulance in every season's teaser.

$1.873 million in advertising from 2014-2015

That'll buy a lot of wine.

44 countries visited

Clearly just because the women were in a beautiful place didn't mean the dates were glamorous.

2 couples still together

Not including Ben and Lauren because it's too soon to tell if they'll last. At least the statistics are on their side, right?! (Wrong.)

20 times Chris Harrison has said this:

Once each season.

1,000,000+ gallons of tears cried

Half of which came from just Britt and Ashley I.

If The Bachelor has been around for this long, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon—and we couldn't be happier!

To be honest, our hearts are still healing from the pain of learning our beloved Zayn Malik was leaving One Direction. March 25, 2016 marks the one-year anniversary of this sad reality.

But, we have to admit that we are HUGE fans of everything that Zayn has been doing since. Today also marks the day that Zayn gave us Mind of Mine, his debut solo album that we are still listening to on repeat. Even though One Direction isn’t the same, we are happy that Zayn has been doing so well.

To pay tribute to this momentous anniversary, 1D fans have been taking to Twitter to share #1YearWithoutZayn memes. Coming in all shapes and sizes, these memes perfectly capture all the mixed emotions we’ve experienced within the past year.

While some express happiness and others anger, some memes share our confusion and frustration about what has become. But above all, these memes show how much Zayn means to us and how tough it’s been adjusting to this new reality.

No matter what Zayn does, we just want him to be healthy and happy—and that’s exactly what it seems he has been this past year! We are so excited to see what the next year holds for the former One Directioner as well as all of his former bandmates. Here’s to #1YearWithoutZayn. We love you, Zayn!

It’s been ten years since Hannah Montana first premiered on the Disney Channel. Yes, a decade ago Miley Cyrus introduced us to the exciting yet crazy world of a teenager trying to juggle two very different lives.

She has come a long way since her days of playing a student by day and pop star by night, but Cyrus took to social media yesterday to commemorate her time on the show.

"Sending love to all my cast members on this anniversary," she wrote to caption a photo of herself wearing a blonde wig. "To the world it's a celebration of 10 years but for us the journey began way before the world had any clue who the fuck any of us are.”

@realdukeofearles understands the insanity of it all..... Sending love to all my cast members on this anniversary .... To the world it's a celebration of 10 years but for us the journey began way before the world had any clue who the fuck any of us are ..... There was a very long auditioning process, and many chemistry reads which really is what sold the show to the producers and channel because no matter what went on over the years (which none of you have any clue about but It was like the real world but more hormonal teenagers) our love for each other was unquestionable.... Even though I feel disconnected to who I was at that time I will always feel eternally grateful for the opportunity and platform I was given .... None of it would have been possible with out every single person who ever contributed to the series .... From regulars , to special guests (and there were many magical ones @dollyparton) to creators, crew , directors..... I am where I am because of loyal fans that I am thankful for and of course love dearly all the new angels who support me now..... Even though HM is chopped up into little tiny pieces and buried in my backyard she will always hold a very special place in my heart! Celebrate this day with us! Get real drunk and remember #HM4EVR send pics gettinnnnn buck wild in honor of this special day! #letsplayadrinkinggame watch HM and every time someone says her name take a shot! Yiew hew!

This Fan Made a 'Harry Potter' Prequel & It's Brilliant

Harry Potter fans have been dying with excitement since the series' prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, was confirmed. And this fan-released prequel has only added to our enthusiasm.

The video, created by professional video editor Justin Zagri, became an instant hit when it was posted to YouTube. It focuses on the Marauders right after they finished Hogwarts in 1978.

After doing a poll on Facebook, it became obvious to Zagri that the prequel needed to revolve around the Marauders. He told Buzzfeed, “So I read the books again, did some research, and came up with a story that I feel had something to say, while making sure we got to know both Snape and the Marauders when they were transitioned into adults, and how events of their past helped shape their future.”

We absolutely love Zagri’s prequel and only hope that the forthcoming movie is as good. We hope Zagri (or other dedicated Harry Potter fans) put out more original content, so we can continue to get hyped up for Fantastic Beast’s release!

There’s nothing that gives us more nostalgia than learning one of our favorite acts from the ’90s is doing a reunion tour!

Us Weekly reports that Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm), Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), Scary Spice (Melanie Brown), and Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) are in the midst of planning a reunion show.

One thing obviously missing from this rumored tour is the fifth member of the group—Posh Spice, a.k.a. the fabulous Victoria Beckham.

A source explains, “They are trying to convince Victoria to jump in, but she doesn’t want to do it. If she doesn’t agree, they are moving ahead without her.”

This isn’t the first time the Spice Girls have been at the center of reunion rumors. With the 20th anniversary of everyone’s favorite girl band coming up this year, fans have been anticipating a reunion for months. The ladies have always spoken very highly of each other, so it’s been likely they would one day reunite for real.

We are so excited at the thought of the Spice Girls performing together again! We hope Posh gets on board so we can relive the ‘90s in all its rightful glory.

5 Spa Treatments You Can Do in Your Dorm

$

A lot of us are finally in the home stretch of the semester. But we’re not off the hook just yet! From formals to finals, there’s so much to do in so little time, and with this much stress, we need a spa day. Of course, if you’re currently living on a collegiette budget, you don’t exactly have the money to shell out for expensive spa treatments every few weeks. But you do have a fridge full of products to help you create your very own at-home beauty products! Try these simple do-it-yourself beauty treatments to make yourself feel glamorous without emptying your wallet.

1. Brown Sugar Body Scrub

The key to softer skin is occasional exfoliation. Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells and creates a smoother complexion while also minimizing pores and wrinkles. The smaller your pores, the more your skin appears to glow. Sugar scrubs are usually easy to make, and you can even mix the ingredients with your hands. Try this simple one from The Idea Room:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey

After mixing the ingredients together, take a handful of the scrub and apply it all over your body, including your feet, back, face, etc. Then, get in the shower and rinse it off. Your skin should feel like new!

2. Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

Before you head to the beach this summer, remember that it’s important to keep your hair healthy and moisturized. Too much exposure to sun and sand can dry out your hair, so make sure you’re taking care of your hair! Beauty guru Michelle Phan says that coconut oil is the perfect moisturizer for dry hair. According to Phan, the coconut oil moisturizes your hair while also adding a healthy shine. Try out her coconut oil hair mask:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup olive oil

After mixing the oils, apply the mixture to your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave the mixture in for 15-20 minutes. Rinse it out and shampoo and condition as you normally would.

3. Lemon Juice Facial

Lemons aren’t much fun to eat on their own, but they hold a pretty significant amount of vitamins and minerals (like vitamin C, magnesium and potassium) that can help your hair and skin. Fresh lemon juice helps to exfoliate your skin while also getting rid of skin discoloration. Try this facial from Woman’s Day.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and apply to your face. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse your face with water. The mixture should make your skin feel tighter. Repeat this facial up to two to three times a week or whenever it’s needed.

4. Olive Oil Facial Treatment

Olive oil is a great moisturizer for most skin types. Try applying a small amount of oil to any area of dry skin at night before you go to sleep. You should wake up with softer skin in the morning.

5. Chocolate Facial

This is the perfect healthy way to satisfy your chocolate cravings! This chocolate facial mask helps to tighten your skin and reduce the size of pores. The cocoa powder is packed with antioxidants, while the honey and natural yogurt can treat acne and cause your skin to glow. Try this facial from Bubzbeauty:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon natural yogurt

After mixing the ingredients, apply a generous amount of the mixture to your face with a makeup brush, avoiding your eyes, and let it sit for 20-25 minutes. Then, rinse the mixture off with water and moisturize your skin.

We've seen the asymmetrical cuts, the undercuts, and the side cuts. We've done the bob and the lob. And we have even seen the angular and geometric cuts. Truly, we've seen it all, but this season, we're getting an upgrade. Take these photos in to your stylist—you're going to want to try these cool cuts.

1. Extreme Partings

Think extreme hair-parts were a thing of the 2000s? Nope! It's back and it's better. You can try it with a bob, but even if you're not ready to make the chop, you can still get the look. While your hair is wet, just create a deep part, push it over, and then allow it to dry before styling and sleeking down the strays. Perfection!

2. Rock-n-Roll Shags

Here's an edgy take on your classic bob. The messy yet oh-so-polished bangs and the face framing layers are very flattering!

3. Bold Bob

Two amazing things are happening here: a center part with no layers. It's bold, it's blunt, and it's beautiful. The look will really bring attention to your gorgeous facial features.

4. The High-Top

This style is making a comeback. We've seen it on guys and we are excited to see it on us power women! Grace Jones killed it and Zendaya paid her tributes. We love it. It's definitely going to be easier for tightly coiled and kinky hair—the bigger the hair, the better.

5. Modern Bobs

As you can see, 2016 is the year of Cutting. It. Off! We are loving this '20s inspired bob (not to mention that teenage angst-meets-2016 vibe). How perfectly does this bob frame the cheekbones? Everything about this is wonderful.

4 Ways for Out-of-State Students to Get In-State Tuition

So you just got into this fantastic college that makes your parents sigh with relief. There's just one catch—you're an out-of-state student, and the tuition that you have to pay makes you cringe every time you look at the long line of digits. If you cry a little inside just thinking about what could've been if your parents had just picked a different state to live in, you've come to the right place. Check out these four ways to get in-state tuition even when you're from out of state!

1. Ask colleges in neighboring states for reduced tuition

Neighbors help neighbors out, even when it comes to college tuition. If you've been accepted to a college in a neighboring state, it's worth a try to call the college's financial aid office and see if the college provides lower tuition costs for students who live in neighboring states or who live close to the state border.

If you're lucky, your neighbor might really know how to lend a helping hand! According to Mark Kantrowitz, student financial aid expert and senior vice president of financial aid help website Edvisors, in-state tuition can be as little as a third of out-of-state tuition. That's a lot of savings!

2. Look for a regional exchange program

Regional exchange programs also act like friendly neighbors, but on a much larger scale. They're financial aid programs that reduce out-of-state tuition for students attending school in a certain region.

"Sometimes a group of nearby states enter into agreements where students in adjacent states can get in-state tuition rates," Kantrowitz says. "Sometimes this is restricted to academic programs and majors that are not available in the student's home state."

Programs that waive the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition for students who qualify include the National Student Exchange, Academic Common Market, Midwest Student Exchange Program, the New England Board of Higher Education and Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

Pay close attention to the programs' deadlines, guidelines about eligible major choices, academic requirements and capacity limits, because they can differ for each program! With a little research, you'll be saving big bucks in no time.

3. Establish residency

If you want to get in-state tuition for a certain college, why not just become a resident? While it's notoriously difficult to establish residency for tuition reduction purposes, it's certainly possible. If you are fully dedicated and play your cards right, you could end up qualifying as an in-state student through establishing residency. Just make sure that it truly makes sense for you, especially when it comes to saving money, because moving can be a huge expense and commitment.

"In-state tuition isn't for just anybody who wants it," says Jake Wells, founder of In-State Angels, which offers articles, resources, products and services related to learning about and earning in-state tuition. "After all, who wouldn't prefer paying 60 percent less or so for the same education by earning in-state tuition? If a person simply moves to a new state just to attend college, that doesn't cut it."

In order to not seem like the person who's obviously moving to get in-state tuition, there are basics to consider: According to Kantrowitz, most states require an in-state student to be a state resident for at least 12 continuous months prior to enrollment, and for others, it’s 24 months. In addition, if you're a dependent student, your custodial parent also has to reside in the state.

But then things can get a bit more complicated. In-state residency requires first and foremost a true intent to become a permanent resident of a new state, according to Wells. This entails establishing ties to the new state, like opening a local bank account, severing ties to the former state and establishing a varying degree of financial independence (demonstrated through tax independence from parents who live in the state, employment, loans, etc.) depending on the state and university in question.

"The college will want to see a preponderance of evidence that the student is indeed a state resident, and for purposes other than just qualifying for in-state tuition," Kantrowitz says. "A student is more likely to qualify for in-state tuition if the student (or parent, if the student is a dependent student) moved to the state for a job; has strong ties to family living in the state; pays taxes as a state resident; gets a library card in the state; gets a state driver's license in the state; registers his/her cars in the state; votes in the state; graduated from a high school in the state [and], if the student/parent has hunting and fishing licenses, gets them in the state, etc."

Remember that every state has its own rules and regulations, and every college within each state has its own interpretations, so it's necessary to do research—and tons of it.

"The College Board has a good list of each state’s residency requirements," says Ryan Luse, an independent education consultant at Suzanne Luse and Associates. "FinAid.org is also a good resource to find out about a specific state’s methods. I also recommend always checking the college’s website, although sometimes information about the cost and residency for tuition purposes can be a bit of a scavenger hunt, as colleges tend to sometimes hide the financial details."

This FinAid webpage has the links to individual state residency requirements for every state. Make sure you know exactly what to do to establish residency and you have ample proof along the way. Even then, there can be a lot of pitfalls. According to Wells, common mistakes include misunderstanding fundamental requirements, failing to adhere to deadlines, trivializing certain parts of the process that seem non-essential and failing to officially document things like employment, loans, savings and income. At some schools, the petition including all evidence and documentation of your in-state status can be upwards of 300 pages.

"If it were a piece of cake, then there wouldn't be around 2 million out-of-state college students," Wells says. "In general, it's an intensive and paperwork-heavy process commonly spanning over a year or more. It's a process that you either take seriously and do 100 percent, or you might as well not even try—doing a halfway job is a waste of time."

Nevertheless, if you're fully dedicated and have researched, strategized and documented like crazy, you might just be able to make this all work and finally gain that hard-to-obtain status of in-state student.

 4. You or your parents work for the college, state or government

It would be a miracle if your parents had the power to suddenly change jobs on a whim, but if your parents just so happen to work as state employees, faculty or staff at a college, members of the military, law enforcement or firefighters, you may be able to receive a tuition waiver or tuition remission.

"Most states have exceptions in their state residency rules for veterans," Kantrowitz says. "There are also exceptions, depending on the state, for children of first responders (police, fire, EMT), especially those who died in the line of duty."

So while a lot of the programs are based on geography, there are others that are linked to employment as well. It wouldn't hurt to do some research, and who knows? Maybe your parent might just be the answer to your tuition headaches.

With a lot of research and determination, you'll be on your way to lowering your tuition! It won't be easy, but if you put the hard work into it, it’ll be worth it.

J.K. Rowling Teaches Us All a Lesson in Handling Rejection

As if we didn't already adore J.K. Rowling, she just gave us another reason to admire her. The mastermind behind the Harry Potter books informed aspiring writers through a series of tweets that even she has received rejection letters. While we might obsess over a letter of rejection to the point of wanting to throw it in the trash, Rowling decided to pin her first letter of rejection to her wall as a source of inspiration.

Now, she is encouraging a fellow writer to turn rejection into a possibility of growth and connection.

For years, Rowling, who is very vocal about the fact that her book was not an instant success in the publishing world, has worked to encourage young writers to not fear failure. When she delievered the commencement speech at Harvard in 2008, she urged the audience to embrace failure and utilize their imagination: "Failure means stripping away of the inessential. It is impossible to live without failure."

While failure is a part of success, even Rowling at once felt like she would never reach the top.

With over 400 million books sold, let's just say her determination definitely paid off in the end. So remember, collegiettes: embracing our greatest failures can help lead to our greatest successes!
