Purdue Dance Staff Member Quits After Alleged Social Media Threats

On Feb. 15th at Purdue University, Jamie Newman, an accompanist and composer in the school’s dance department, resigned in the wake of controversy regarding comments he was accused of making online regarding a group of pro-life protesters on campus.

The comments Newman has been cited for making have appeared on different pro-life website forums, and threatened to rape those individuals involved in the protest. A user with the handle ‘jamiegnewman’ is reported to have said they “did in fact offer to rape Tom’s wife/daughter/great grandmother. Free of charge, even. I’m generous that way” in a comment on LiveAction.com, a site dedicated to pro-life advocacy.

Newman himself claimed that this story was “‘false and defamatory’ and ‘a complete fabrication,’” but in a letter he later wrote to the university, Newman acknowledged that he made at least some inflammatory comments to the organization’s Facebook page.

Purdue, which is located in Lafayette, Ind., did not fire Newman after first hearing of these alleged comments, citing its reason for doing so as being part of its status as a public university whose staff is protected by First Amendment law. Additionally, a legal representative for Purdue released a statement explaining that, after having the situation reviewed by the police, it was understood that Newman’s supposed comments posed “no real threat to the campus community.”

Latrice Young, a dance student at Purdue, was quoted saying that she did not believe the accusations or that Newman would have said them “‘even in a joking manner,’” according to a local Indiana news site.

Purdue did, however, condemn Newman’s “abhorrent” speech, stating “Mr. Newman’s obnoxious rhetoric is an embarrassment for Purdue” but that no official action or punishment was warranted in this case. Newman, of course, took this action into his own hands when he resigned along with a lengthy statement of his own to his former employer.

"If anything, you owe me an apology—indeed, you should probably be begging my forgiveness—for facilitating the dissemination of fabricated and defamatory statements about me, and for failing to vehemently denounce the effort made of Students For Life to destroy my life and career," he wrote.

What 'Sexy' Means to Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski has an important message for anyone who thinks it's okay to ridicule women's sexuality.

In a powerful new essay called "Baby Woman" published on Lena Dunham's storytelling website, Lenny Letter, the model and actress completely nails what it means to be sexy, adding that women should be allowed to be sexy on their own terms.

"The implication is that to be sexual is to be trashy because being sexy means playing into men's desires," she writes. "To me, sexy is a kind of beauty, a kind of self-expression, one that is to be celebrated, one that is wonderfully female. Why does the implication have to be that sex is a thing men get to take from women and women give up?"

Ratajkowski is definitely no stranger to body-shaming and sexist criticism, with her topless performance in Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" video sparking all types of controversy and media attention. She once referred to her appearance in the video as "the bane of my existence."

The title of Ratajkowski's essay comes from a name that her father used to call her. She mentions in the introduction that her father would call her a "baby woman" because of how developed her body was at such a young age. Throughout the essay, she also describes many adolescent experiences in which family members warned her of her budding sexuality and suggested that she censor herself more.

This essay is definitely empowering and worth the read. You can find the full piece here.

North & Saint West Collaborated on Their Dad's New Album

Is is too early to start a music career at the age of two or even two-months-old? Well, North and Saint West are obviously eager to get their start, since they collaborated (in some capacity) on their father's The Life of Pablo.

When Kanye announced on Twitter that his new music was available, an extensive credits list for the album was also released. That's where Cosmopolitan spotted North and Saint's “creative consultant” credits. #toddlergoals, much?

Regardless of how the siblings landed on the album credits, we know whatever they did to earn those spots will probably leave us in awe—as usual. If this is any indication of how their careers will turn out, we know they both have bright futures ahead of them.

People Transferred A Billion Dollars Over Venmo in January

Venmo, the app you probably use to pay your friends back for alcohol, just announced that last month people transferred over $1 billion through the money app. That's a lot of late-night pizza and rent payments. BuzzFeed reports that after a total of $7.5 billion being transferred in all of 2015, the money app shows no signs of slowing down.

Venmo’s parent company is the ever-popular PayPal, whose chief executive Dan Schulman explains that the growing digital app “really is almost ubiquitous in the under 30 marketplace and it is how they manage and move their money.” If you've ever watched a group of college students deciding how to split up a restaurant bill, you know that's true.

According to Fortune, you'll soon be able to pay for some delivery services and other items through Venmo, which will expand the app even more. Keep your fingers crossed for Chipotle and Starbucks delivery!

8 Inappropriate Interview Questions Only Women Hear (& How to Respond)

$
0
0

While some obvious improvements have been made in the past few years, we still have a long way to go when it comes to making the workplace completely female-friendly and free of gender discrimination. Despite all the progress, interviewers are still asking women some pretty eye roll-worthy questions that they’re definitely not asking male applicants—and we’re tired of it.

1. “Are you married?”

For some reason, many interviewers seem to think that personal details, such as relationship status, are somehow relevant to a woman’s ability to get the job done.

“I was at an interview where the interviewer kept looking at the engagement ring on my left hand,” Kristen Kramer, the content and communication coordinator for Girl Scouts, says. “Then the person asked if I was getting married soon. I was taken aback and didn't know what it had to do with the interview – perhaps they thought I'd be taking off for the wedding? I just answered truthfully and tried to move on.”

Bottom line: It’s you applying for the job, not your SO—meaning your personal life should never be part of the conversation.

How to deal:

Rachel Ritlop, a career and business coach, says that oftentimes, answering a question with a question is the easiest way to subtly remind your interviewer that their question is not okay.

“If she feels uncomfortable, she should advocate for herself, and redirect the conversation by saying things like ‘Before I answer, how would that information help you in the hiring process?’” Ritlop says. “It is illegal for employers to ask you anything that they cannot relate back to the position you are applying for.”

Related: 6 Interview Phrases Employers Are Tired of Hearing

2. “Do you plan to wear that at work?”

As many collegiettes who wear a head covering, such as a hijab, as part of their religious beliefs can attest, this question is seriously so annoying. We’ve made it this far in life covering our hair and we will continue to do so, thank you very much.

If the interviewer is referencing the length of your skirt or dress or the height of your heels? Also totally not appropriate. Unfortunately, like a lot of high schools, many workplaces still have the mentality that a leg-baring look is going to distract the men in the office—ugh!

How to deal:

Counter this question with the straightforward answer of, “Yes I do, though I’m not exactly sure how what I’m wearing affects my ability to do this job to the best of my ability.”

3. “We sometimes make dirty jokes around the office – are you okay with that?”

Newsflash: There are, in fact, men that exist who are also uncomfortable with NSFW jokes or inappropriate conversations in the workplace. Oh, and besides that? It’s often considered sexual harassment.

“In an interview I was once asked by a CEO, ‘Sometimes I make jokes around the office that some of the women around here find inappropriate. How do you think you will handle that?’” Jodie Shaw, the CFO of The Alternative Board says. “My response was, ‘Is that a question or an example?’ Needless to say, I did not get the job.”

How to deal:

Questions like these can serve as an early sign that the company you’re interviewing with may not have a culture that respects women—something that is obviously a huge red flag. In this case, how you decide to respond depends on whether or not you’re okay with working in an office culture that might not always be very female-friendly.

“I remind candidates that interviews are two-way streets,” David Nast, an interview coach, says. “You are learning about them as much as they are learning about you.  If an interviewer made you feel uncomfortable by asking inappropriate questions that should serve as a warning to you, a clue into their corporate culture, and play into your decision-making process, should an offer for employment come your way.”

Bottom line: If you don’t see yourself being able to put up with an office culture that is potentially misogynistic, feel free to give a resounding “No.”

4. “How would you handle a predominantly male team?

If you happen to be going into a typically male-dominated field, be prepared to hear this cringe-worthy question a lot. Um, we’d handle a predominantly male team like we’d handle any other team, because men shouldn’t take issue with having a strong, competent female boss.

This question also implies that your gender is to blame if your “predominantly male team” doesn’t take you seriously, when in actuality, the problem is that your team is treating their boss with disrespect.

How to deal:

In this case, subtly reminding your interviewer that their question is inappropriate isn’t necessarily a bad idea—simply asking, “How exactly will a predominantly male team be different from any team I’ve handled in the past?” should do the trick. You can even keep things short and sweet by responding with, “I’d handle a male team as I would any other team,” and move on to reminding your interviewer why you’re an amazing leader. Nailed it.

5. “You’re a woman?”

Surprise! So, you share the same first name as several members of the opposite sex, and the interviewer clearly thought they would be interviewing a male—but seriously, should it even matter?

“Upon entering an interview I was immediately greeted by the principal of the firm holding my resume who remarked, ‘Oh! I thought you were a man,’” Amy*, an architect whose middle name also happens to be Rene, says. “Apparently, the male version of ‘Rene’ in my name had thrown him off. I smiled and responded, ‘I don't think you are allowed to say that.’”

An interviewer might be surprised by your gender, especially in a typically male-dominated field—but that still gives him no right to embarrass you by acknowledging it.

How to deal:

In this case, it’s entirely possible that the interviewer doesn’t know how inappropriate they’re being. If you suspect this is the case, a friendly, “Yes, I know I’m one of the few!” is the best way to go. Have a feeling the interviewer is trying to be condescending? Steal Amy’s response and directly call him out on the impolite nature of his question.

6. “Have you ever cried in the workplace?”

Last we checked, just because we’re women doesn’t mean we’re any more likely to get upset over a bad day at work. Everyone—no matter their gender—has those days when it feels like nothing is going right. We just can’t believe interviewers still have to be reminded of that. Not to mention that it’s a totally inappropriate invasion of privacy.

How to deal:

Remind your interviewer that what he just asked for is private information. Responding with, “I’d like to keep that information private,” or “That’s personal information,” will allow you to leave the interview with your dignity still intact.

7. “Do you plan to have children?” or “Are you pregnant?”

To be clear, this question is not only obnoxious, but it’s also perfectly illegal. Need we say more?

“I was interviewing for my dream job and I also happened to be nine months pregnant with my first child,” Karin Hurt, the CEO of Let’s Grow Leaders says. “The 50-something, southern guy said, ‘You say you will still be as focused on your career, but many women change their minds. How can we know that won’t be you? What if I wait for you and you don’t come back?’”

How to deal:

Using the “answering a question with a question” technique is best here—simply asking, “In what way is that information relevant to my ability to do the job?” should get the point across.

8. “How do you plan to balance work and family?

How do we plan to balance work and family? The same way a man would, assuming we even decide that we want a family—which also happens to be none of the interviewer’s business. As a very wise woman named Beyoncé once said, “Who run the world? Girls.”

How to deal:

Again, this question is asking for information that is your business, not your potential workplace’s. Whether you’re planning to have a family or not, answer by saying, “How I plan to balance my professional and personal life is information I’d like to keep private. You can be assured that while I am at work, I will be focused on getting the job done.”

The reality is, even the most qualified, strong woman will get asked a question that is totally out of line every now and then—but having a totally #GirlBoss answer prepared will have you ready to make your interviewer realize their major faux pas.

15 Reasons Why The Carb Life Is the Only Life You Want to Live

$

There are few topics in life that everyone can agree on, but one thing is for sure: carbs are great. So many fad diets try to pull us apart from our one true love without realizing that carbs not only keep us full and focused, they're good for the soul. Living without carbs is like painting a rainbow with fifty shades of beige. What kind of life involves zero candy, bagels or hash browns? A sad one! A sad, miserable, tastefully-boring life. If we are what we eat, let's remain vibrant and enjoy the sweeter things in life in proportion. Here are 15 reasons why the carb life is the only life you want to live.

To keep your sanity

Gigi Hadid says, "Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane." We say, "Give us burgers or give us death." Tomato, toh-maw-to.

Kale is the enemy

I'm sorry. I'm not going to pretend like I like kale. In smoothies, on pizza, by itself doused in ranch dressing; it's all the same. Not delicious.

Working out = EARNED IT

If I spend two hours pumping iron in a sweatshop, you best bet I'm dreaming of the twice-baked potato coming my way. I nee incentive to work out. Carbs are incentive. Carbs lead to working out. Boom. Healthy.

Happy people eat carbs

Try walking around campus for five minutes without spotting a student happily living their life, hyped because their Starbs is basically a cup of glorified carbs and they're okay with that.

Coconut oil is great, but butter is important

Any and all questions will be directed to Paula Deen.

Carb-less desserts are.... not dessert

Fat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, flavor-free, food-free, it's actually just paper.

Carbs equal beauty

Carbs will make you feel better, ergo carbs will make you look better, ergo carbs are beauty. If anyone says anything about how much you're eating, eat them, too.

Carbs don't lie to you

Post break-ups, bad interviews, horrible exams; carbs have always been there for me. I'm not about to drop them cold turkey. Make new friends, but keep the carbs.

Escaping carbs is harder than making your eyeliner even

They're in fruits, vegetables, baked goods, pasta - you name it, carbs are all up in there.

Breakfast needs carbs

Have you had pancakes? You have to understand, those are gone without carbs. Buh-bye, fluffy goodness. Nice to know you. Oh, and let's not forget about bacon.

Dinner needs carbs

Remember that thing about breakfast? Whelp, prepare yourself for a hearty serving of ICE. Ice, that's it. We need carbs.

My mood directly correlates to my carb intake

It's like pure, starving angst settles in where all the carbs used to be in my body. Hangry is a real dilemma. Let's start the conversation.

I'm a good hostess

Ain't no party like a carb-filled party. No one wants to come over for tea without tiny, adorble cakes. Don't be stingy. Bring out the carbs. Make tea parties great again.

Carbs bring on the warm-fuzzies

Nothing reminds me of days spent baking with my grandmother like a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie. Anti-carb dieticians, don't take that away from me.

Carbs are love, carbs are life

Going out to dinner with friends, having breakfast in bed, baking with family, late-night snacking with roommates: all of that is basically gone in a life without carbs.

A little bit of everything is fine in moderation. Have that extra piece of pie, rip into a pizza with pals, throw sticks of butter in the air and let the carbs rain down on you! Have fun and keep living the good, carb-filled life.

My Boyfriend and I Celebrated Valentine’s Day with His Mom

Valentine’s Day has always struck me as a weird holiday. I’ve had old high school boyfriends take me out to dinners, order me flowers and maybe even bring some chocolates or a teddy bear…It was all so cliché (I didn’t even like half of the chocolates in a variety pack). The day is filled with expectations and “surprises” that usually don’t live up to any cute gestures in the romantic comedies I love so much.

When this Valentine’s Day was approaching, my current—and pretty awesome—boyfriend and I were trying to come up with ideas for our first V-Day together. We go out to eat fairly often, and he already surprises me with cute, romantic dates all the time. I thought back to my first and favorite valentine: my dad. I used to love when my dad spoiled me on Valentine's Day. It was something that made the holiday special. My boyfriend’s mom was his first valentine, too. Obviously, as we each grew older, V-Day had become more about SOs than about relationships with family, but I thought: Why does it have to be that way?

RELATED: My Girlfriend & I Celebrated Valentine's Day Like a Normal Couple for the First Time

His mom put so much work into being there for her four children over the past few decades and now Valentine’s Day was just another day for her. So I asked my boyfriend, “Why don’t we cook dinner for your mom this year?”

Like any mama’s boy, he answered with a “YES!”

And so the planning began. We picked up pink salmon, fresh strawberries, fancy cheeses and jams, and, of course, chocolate. I set up a huge cheese platter while his mom sat down in her slippers watching The Bachelor Valentine’s Day special. She lovesThe Bachelor, so the timing worked out perfectly. My boyfriend and I jammed out to some music, danced around a bit, and actually had an awesome time cooking up the meal. I handled the sides while he roasted the salmon. His roommate even joined in—at least as far as eating half of the cheese and crackers. His mom was nice enough to make some Pinterest-worthy strawberry cocktails after!

RELATED: I Celebrated Valentine's Day For Me & Here's What Happened

We laughed together eating at the table. His mom complimented the food as if it were from some five-star restaurant. She took care of dinners for more years than I had been alive; it was only right for us to do something for her. There were none of the typical Valentine’s Day expectations of a life-sized teddy bear or two-dozen roses. It was just relaxing, fun, and wholly enjoyable. Honestly, it was the best Valentine’s Day I’ve ever celebrated. Telling from his mom’s text, she had a pretty good time, too!

Your friends should be happy that you have your priorities straight.

15. You’ll go out tomorrow! Maybe.

Here’s the truth about rescinded college acceptances and how you can fight senioritis to make sure your acceptance letter isn’t followed by a warning one.

Having your admission revoked

Unlike the myth that Greek life is one big toga party or that everyone gains the Freshman 15, having your college acceptance revoked before you even arrive due to poor second-semester grades (or other factors!) can actually happen.

Does this mean if your A in AP Spanish slips to a B that you can say hasta la vista to college? Definitely not. However, if you slip more than one or two full letter grades, that’s when colleges start taking notice.

“If you’re an A student, a D or an F could certainly do it,” says Bev Taylor, founder of The Ivy Coach, a college admissions counseling practice. “If you got some Cs, the college would probably just ask you to explain your grades and see if you had a valid reason for their drop.”

Why is your school allowed to revoke your acceptance? Well, if you look at your acceptance letter, Taylor says you’ll likely notice there’s a clause making your acceptance “conditional upon the successful completion of the final year of high school.” Your letter may have that exact phrasing, or it may say something like, “It is our expectation that you remain fully engaged in your studies and other pursuits for the remainder of your secondary school career.”

According to Taylor, that means you have to maintain the image of yourself that you presented in your application, whether you had a 4.0 or a 2.5.

So if you have minor grade slips? Not an issue.

“If you’re a B student and you have a C or two Cs, the same thing goes [as when A students get Bs],” Taylor says. “[The school] would probably never ask you about it.”

Collegiette Allison* says her C- in BC Calculus did not cause her school to revoke her acceptance.

“I got accepted off the waitlist for an Ivy League school, despite [my math grade],” she says. “Because I had maintained good grades in my other classes, and it had been pretty clear from my application that I was in no way going to end up as a math major, my school let it slide.”

However, it doesn’t matter if you’re an A, B or C student or what field you’re interested in. Taylor says in almost any scenario, an F could cause a school to revoke a student’s acceptance.

It’s not just receiving poor grades that can lead to a revoked acceptance. Dropping a course or switching to a less rigorous one—for example, deciding to move from AP Art History to pottery your second semester—is also considered a violation of the “successful senior year completion” clause, Taylor says. Changing one class most likely won’t end with a college revoking your acceptance; however, if you were to drop all of your AP classes for joke electives, that’s a different story!

“After I got in to my school, I decided I didn’t want to stay in my AP Econ and AP Computer Science courses,” says collegiette Kelsey*. “I transferred to basic classes that still fulfilled my high school’s requirements. Then, my college sent me a letter asking me to explain why I wasn’t taking the same courses [with which] I had started the year.”

Taylor says there are two types of letters you can receive for slacking off. The first, in which the admissions team says it has noted your drop in grades or class changes and would like an explanation, is the most common. The second, in which your acceptance is revoked with no warning, is pretty rare and usually reserved for non-grade-related infractions, like getting caught cheating or being arrested.

How to respond

If you get a warning letter, it shouldn’t come as a shock that you should take immediate action to bring up your grades. Talk to your teachers, schedule an appointment with your counselor and establish a study and homework plan—basically, do everything in your power to return your GPA to its former state.

Taylor says you should also reply to the college. Maybe something happened in your personal life that makes your grade change a little more understandable, such as a family illness or death. In those cases, explain what happened, apologize for your lapse and say you’re working to improve your grades.

For example, you could write:

Dear Awesome University,

Thank you for your recent letter inquiring into my grades. Those grades are not an accurate reflection of my work ethic, and I apologize. They have slipped due to circumstances I could not have expected or prepared for. In late December, my mother fell ill, and coping with her illness has made it difficult for me to concentrate on my schoolwork. I am doing my best to raise my grades and want to reassure you that I maintain the commitment to excellence that I had when I applied to your school.

Thank you for your understanding,

Pre-collegiette

However, you might not have mitigating circumstances to point to. While “senioritis” isn’t a valid excuse, you should send a letter to your school acknowledging your missteps and promising to rectify the situation.

It might go without saying, but once you’ve told the school you’re working on bringing up your grades, it’s essential that you actually, you know, work to bring up your grades.

How to stay focused

When it comes to staying focused during your last semester of high school, Taylor recommends keeping your eye on the prize.

“You’ve worked all these years to get into the college of your dreams, and now you’re going to give that all up by stopping before the finish line?” she says. “That makes no sense.”

Remind yourself what you’re (still) working for by printing out a picture of your future campus and pinning it on your bulletin board, wearing your college colors to school or setting your college’s fight song as your ringtone. Seriously, nothing is too corny if it motivates you.

Jaya Powell, a senior at Duke University, recommends trying to stay interested in your courses so you don’t feel like you’re doing busywork.

“I loved reading, so my senior year I took an AP lit class,” she says. “Because I was so interested in the course material, I had no trouble keeping up with my grades.”

You may also want to ask yourself why you’ve worked for good grades in the first place. Was it really just to get into college, or was it because you care about learning and making yourself proud?

“One thing that keeps me going is constantly asking myself, ‘What do you live for? Why do you care?’” pre-collegiette Angela Phung says. “It's a good reminder that my ultimate goal isn't college; it's to get to college to improve and grow more.”

You can also use your membership in honors clubs to keep your focus up. If membership is based on GPA, letting your grades drop means you might not be able to get that special cord or walk with the other students in honors club on graduation day.

“I'm a second-semester senior that has worked so hard over the past four years, and no matter how much I want to, I'm to going to throw all of that away to go to a few more parties and watch a little more Netflix,” says pre-collegiette Nina Brown. “There's only five more months, and it's not worth it to end my last semester of high school with bad grades.”

While it’s hard to keep chugging along after you know you have a twin XL bed ready and waiting for you on your future college campus, keep your motivation going strong by remembering that that twin XL isn’t quite yours yet. If you keep your grades up, you’ll have no reason to fear that letter asking you to explain or worse, gulp, saying your acceptance has been rescinded.

So finish strong, pre-collegiettes! You’ll be collegiettes soon.

Kanye Wants You to Stop Obsessing Over His Feud With Taylor Swift

It seems like there's constantly something new going on in the feud between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. While Kanye was at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, paparazzi tried to add further fuel to the fire by asking him about Swift, particularly if the singer should show him more respect. However, Kanye's reaction was calm, to our surprise, as he simply said he "wants the best for that person."

The feud started when he dropped his seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo, last week. In his song “Famous,” Kanye raps, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous / God damn / I made that bitch famous."

Several days after Kanye's album release, Taylor took her Grammy win for Album of the Year as an opportunity to diss the rapper. “I want to say to all the young women out there — there are going to be people along the way who are going to try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame," the singer said in her acceptance speech in reference to Kanye. "But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going, you'll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there."

While Kanye seems to have no intention of apologizing for the lyrics, he denies animosity between him and Swift. Rather, he thinks the media has blown the feud out of proportion. “It’s like, I want the best for that person, but there’s people going through real issues out here,” the T.L.O.P. rapper stated. “I don’t think people care about me or her in that way. People care about their families, their kids. If you like my music, listen to it. If you like her music, listen to it.”

Does this mark the end of this war of words, or will Taylor fire back at Kanye yet again? We'll have to wait and see.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Author, Harper Lee, Dies at 89

We’ve all probably had to read To Kill a Mockingbird at some point—middle school, high school or even college. It is one of America’s most beloved and influential books on racial injustice. Some of us may even have read Go Set A Watchman, released last year as the sequel to Mockingbird. Harper Lee, the inspiring author of both novels, died Friday in her sleep in Monroeville, Ala. She was 89.

Nelle Harper Lee lived a long life after the commercial success of To Kill a Mockingbird, which won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961.

Lee’s family said in a statement, “Her passing was unexpected. She remained in good basic health until her passing. The family is in mourning and there will be a private funeral service in the upcoming days, as she had requested.”

According toThe New York Times, Lee never expected nor fully accepted her role as a celebrity. In a 1964 radio interview, Lee said, “I was hoping for a quick and merciful death [for the book] at the hands of the reviewers, but, at the same time I sort of hoped someone would like it well enough to give me encouragement.” This led to Lee’s reputation as a literary recluse, rarely showing up for public appearances or awards.

“I am still alive, although very quiet,” Lee once wrote to her book agent 30 years after the release of Mockingbird. A much-anticipated sequel did not appear until 2015, when a manuscript for Go Set a Watchman turned up under suspicious circumstances. Many questioned whether Lee was even aware that the book would be published. The release of the much darker novel, which explored extreme racial tensions in the South and put Atticus's morals into question, brought Lee's published book count to a total of two.

Whether or not she fully wanted to be famous, Harper Lee will remain one of the American literary greats.

University of Arizona Students Target Nearby Mosque with Islamaphobic Behavior

Ever since the attacks in San Bernardino, Calif. in December, Islamophobia has spread like wildfire. According to the The New York Times, a mosque in Tuscon, Arizona has recently become the target of racist slurs, insults and vandalism—perpetrated by none other than college students.

The mosque serves community members as well as Muslim students at the University of Arizona. The Muslim Student Association has an office in the building, and many professors visit regularly. But students that live in the high-rise apartments next to the mosque are less than tolerant.

There have been reports of these students throwing beer cans, bottles and even crushed peanuts on the building on Friday and Saturday nights. Fortunately, nobody has been injured. The taunts began three years ago, but have escalated recently, potentially due to the refugee crisis and the San Bernardino shooting. In December, CNN reported that crimes such as vandalism and harrassment at mosques were at a record high.

The Times reports that multiple meetings with faculty and students have occurred since the beginning of the school year, especially after the racially-charged episodes at the University of Missouri. Efforts to stop the harassment of the mosque-goers have ultimately failed and it remains an issue.

The landlord of the apartments next to the mosque considered closing off the balconies so that the problem wouldn't persist. Multiple neighborhood residents, including a student named Madalyn Lorber, told the Times that the mosque members "keep to themselves" and don't do anything that would prompt hateful remarks and actions.

Hatred and intolerance are never okay, so let's hope that these students quit their gross, drunken escapades and start acting like citizens of the world.

Pope Francis Suggests that Women Can Use Contraception to Avoid Zika Virus

Pope Francis has been in the news quite a bit lately, especially after criticizing Donald Trump. On Thursday, the Pope suggested that women who are at a high risk of contracting the Zika Virus could use articial contraception—a notion that goes against years of Catholic tradition.

Scientists believe that the Zika virus outbreak is linked to the rise in births resulting in microcephaly. Microcephaly is a “neurological condition marked by unusually small heads that can result in developmental problems,” according to Reuters. Researchers have even found evidence that the virus can affect the brains of newborns if women have the gotten the disease while pregnant.

The Catholic Church has stated numerous times that artificial contraception is sinful, since it keeps sex from its “natural purpose” of creating life. According to BuzzFeed News, several bishops in Latin America, where the Zika virus pandemic is occurring, have said that the emergency does not mean that contraception is okay in the eyes of the Church.

However, Pope Francis has suggested that this particular case makes it “clear” that contraception is not an absolute evil. He cited a 1968 encyclical by Pope Paul IV, saying in a press conference, “Paul VI, a great man, in a difficult situation in Africa, permitted nuns to use contraceptives in cases of rape.” Pope Francis maintained that abortion is still banned in the Catholic Church as an “absolute evil.”

Pope Francis’ comments came while on his way back to Vatican after a visit to Mexico. During this press conference, he made headlines again for his comments on GOP candidate Donald Trump. Referring to Trump’s proposed wall between Mexico and the U.S., Pope Francis said, “A person who thinks only about building walls…and not bridges, is not Christian.”

The Pope has the ultimate papal authority in the Church, so Catholic women in the regions affected by the Zika pandemic may use contraception without feeling as though they sinned against their religion. This is an important step for the Church in terms of both women’s health and worldwide reproductive rights.
