20 Signs You're A Proud Vegetarian

You made the decision to quit eating meat, and whether it was last week or ten years ago, you're glad you did it! Here are 20 signs that you take pride in leaving meat off of your plate.

1. You hate getting those pamphlets about animal slaughter.

Yeah, animal farming practices and slaughter methods are awful and inhumane. But I don't need to see the pictures--I know that! That's why I stopped eating meat in the first place!

2. But at the same time, you love that people are spreading the word.

3. You'll never quite stop being annoyed by people asking you about protein all the time.

Yes, it's true. Protein is found in more foods than just meat!

4. You can't help but feel at least a little bit of pride when other people tell you they'd never be able to do what you do.

Aww, shucks. But really, it's not that hard. They should try it!

5. You get super excited when friends tell you they stopped eating meat, too.

Welcome to the club, pal!

6. You'll never stop being amazed by how funny people think they are when they say, "sure, but I have BACON!"

7. You remember the exact date that you stopped eating meat (and for some of you, that's the day you were born)!

8. Sometimes you get nervous that you ordered meat by mistake.

Then you have to make all of your meat-eating friends taste it and figure out if there really is meat in your food.

9. At least a couple times a week, you try to explain all the benefits of vegetarianism to your apathetic friends and family members.

Sadly, though, you're usually unsuccessful in getting them to convert. Well, try again next week!

10. But it's alright, your other vegetarian friends get you.

11. You know how rough it is trying to get your family to agree to go a vegetarian restaurant for dinner.

12.  You're a pro at making food from whatever's already available in your dorm.

The dining hall has nothing vegetarian but week-old tofu tonight? It's cool, time to bust out the top ramen and all those spices you've been saving!

13. Honestly, you don't miss the taste of meat anymore. Tofurkey is life!

14. You can't wait for Meatless Mondays at the dining hall!

Who hates Mondays? Not this girl!

15. You love all the different ways vegetarianism is good not just for your health but for your hair and skin, too!

16. You find it kind of amusing when people think that you can't be a good athlete if you don't eat meat.

17. You find people that much more attractive when you find out they're vegetarians too.

18. You already know exactly what to say to people who will never stop sarcastically asking you why you don't eat meat.

And you're more than happy to explain it to people who are genuinely curious, too!

19. You feel super guilty when you go over to a friend's house and their parents cooked meat for dinner.

Sorry. It's not you, it's me!

20. But in the end, you wouldn't have it any other way.

Whether it's for moral, health-related or religious reasons, you absolutely love your plant-based diet!

How to Project Confidence in Romantic Situations

Nonverbal communication includes everything from where you sit in class to how you text. Your actions and choices say a lot about you before you even say “hello!” We’ve all heard about RBF (resting bitch face), but what else about your actions can you use to your advantage with a crush or an SO? Jesse McCartney is all about body language, and so are we!

But Jesse doesn’t have ALL the answers. We talked to Adam LoDolce, founder of SexyConfidence.com, to get his take on the matter. LoDolce’s mission is to help the 21st century woman create a love life she loves. Sounds good to us!

Be yourself

One of the key aspects of communicating your personality to a love interest is through confidence. If you’re secure in who you are, that will shine through. “Confidence is an emotion and if you FEEL confident, then it will automatically be portrayed in your body language,” LoDolce explains. "Remind yourself that YOU are worthy of that person and continue being social. Before you know it, you’ll be more confident to talk to anyone.”

The important part is to be YOU! You are the most attractive when you are your authentic self. Love yourself and you’ll be the hottest collegiette in the room.

So how do we convey this confidence? Shoulders back, head up and smile! Maybe even do a few power poses before heading out for the night.

Show that you’re interested

It can be hard to even text a guy when you’re totally crushing on him, never mind face-to-face interaction! We’ve all had that awkward foot-in-mouth moment with our crush.

Luckily, LoDolce has us covered for these moments with an awesome acronym: S.E.T.

Smile: “Even if you’re nervous, be sure to smile—ear to ear!”

Touch: “Physical contact is critical for creating an intimate dynamic.”

Eye Contact: “How can he resist your beautiful eyes?”

Next time your words come out like Lindsay Lohan’s in Mean Girls, just think of this acronym and you’ll be SET!

How do you know if they’re interested too?

It can be scary to put yourself out there and make the first move. But, it’s easy to tell if he’s feeling the vibes too. First, LoDolce says, “If you’re talking at a party or bar and the conversation is continuing, then it’s a great sign!” If he’s sticking around, your chances are improving for sure. Plus, “If he’s laughing at even your dumbest jokes,” you probably have won him over. And if he returns the eye contact you remembered with the SET acronym, you’ve totally won him over.

Get out there and flirt, collegiettes! The most important things to keep in mind when you're out on the prowl is just to be authentic and have fun. It's totally not worth it if you're not feeling the vibes with someone. But if you're into it, be yourself and show that you're interested. Chances are, he is too! If you’re at a loss for words, you never know what a subtle hair flip or smile might do! If all else fails, there’s always the bend and snap! (We hear it works every time!)

A Transgender Woman in San Francisco Was Assaulted for the Second Time This Year

San Francisco is known for being an LGBT-friendly city, so it made sense for 25-year-old transgender woman Samantha Hulsey to move there from Georgia in 2013. However, since moving to the West Coast, Hulsey has been assaulted on two separate occasions while out with a partner, according to SFGate—the second just occurred this past Sunday.

After going out to dinner and a movie with her fiancee, Daira Hopwood, the two were walking outside when a couple began hurling transphobic slurs at them. Dewayne Kemp and Rebecca Westover then threw hot coffee in Hulsey’s face and began punching her in the head and face.

"I was in fight-or-flight mode. I had fear for my own life," Hulsey told SFGate about the attack. "The person said, 'Do you want to die?' He threatened to kill me." Thankfully, passersby caught the attention of police officers, who arrested Kemp and Westover on the scene. They are currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail.

Sadly, this is not even the first time Hulsey has been the victim of violence since moving to San Francisco. In January, a man followed her off of a bus before attacking her and stabbing her twice. Her first attacker could face a life sentence if convicted of all charges.

"It's disturbing to me," Hulsey said. "I came here for safety and acceptance. It's not OK for people to do this anywhere — especially here."

Husley's story shows just how much farther we have to go to make the world safe for transgender people.

People Who Text And Drive All Have One Thing in Common

$

Despite the countless PSAs and campaigns against texting while driving, the dangerous habit is still on the rise—in 2014, 2.2 percent of drivers were texting behind the wheel, compared to 1.7 percent in 2013, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. In an effort to better understand why texting and driving occurs, researchers at Penn State conducted a study looking at common characteristics among those who do it. Unsurprisingly, one particular personality trait was present among those who regularly text and drive: impulsiveness.

This was determined by researching the idea of “discounting delayed rewards”—When people have difficulty seeing the value in waiting for something, even if it is positive. For the sake of the study, participants were divided into two groups: those who regularly text and drive and those who don’t.

Participants were asked such questions as: would they rather wait for a period of time (anywhere from a week to 10 years) to receive $1000, or receive a smaller amount immediately? Those who text and drive were much more likely to choose the smaller amount and discount the delayed reward, while those who don’t text behind the wheel most often chose to wait for the larger sum.

It’s not exactly shocking that millennials, particularly ages 16-24, are much more likely to text behind the wheel than any other age group. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a particularly impulsive person, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the temptation to glance down at your phone screen when you’re behind the wheel. Though sending or reading a text takes only a moment, in 2013, 424,000 people were injured in crashes caused by distracted drivers.

Thankfully, where there’s a will, there’s a way app for that—apps like TXTShield shut down your phone’s ability to send or receive texts, and also send an auto-response to anyone trying to reach you letting them know you’re behind the wheel. If you’re losing sight of the delayed reward (which is arriving at your destination safe and sound), don’t be afraid to make use of an app like this!

Georgetown Students Fight Institutional Racism, One Building at a Time

Racism, heartbreakingly and infuriatingly, is not a thing of the past. In light of the appalling recent incidents at the University of Missouri and Yale University, campuses across the nation are joining in solidarity to support students of color throughout the country. Many have shown signs of success at effecting the first steps towards institutional change—with the forced resignation of the president of Mizzou for his failure to address blatant acts of racism making headlines—but there is clearly still work to be done. Today, another university is making headlines for its work towards a safer campus climate for all.

Georgetown University has taken a stand against the institution's historical support of slavery by agreeing to rename two buildings titled after former Georgetown presidents who were prominent slaveholders, and whose slave sales helped sustain Georgetown financially, according to the Huffington Post. Mulledy Hall and McSherry Hall (named after Thomas F. Mulledy and William McSherry, respectively) have been temporarily renamed Freedom Hall and Remembrance Hall, thanks to the efforts of The Working Group on Slavery, Memory and Reconciliation on campus. While it would be ignorant to claim that the renaming of buildings is enough to abolish systematic racism, the action is certainly a step forward—one of many for Georgetown University and other American college campuses.

In addition to the name changes, Georgetown University will be addressing past and present racism on campus through campus-wide conversations. And Georgetown is not alone in their efforts. Other colleges, including Princeton and Yale, have attempted to change building names as well, and colleges across the country are protesting racism on campus.

While combating racism is clearly and unfortunately a daunting task, these movements—led and motivated by our fellow collegiettes—should work to inspire all of us on our own campuses. These acts provide guidance on how we, too, can be agents of change against systematic inequality.

Good News: Study Shows Coffee Can Help You Live Longer

Coffee has always had a kind of love/hate relationship with the medical community. It seems that doctors are constantly changing their mind about coffee's effect on your health. But a new study published in the journal Circulation will have coffee fiends and casual drinkers everywhere jumping for joy.

According to findings by the Harvard School of Public Health, daily coffee drinkers (we're talking less than five cups a day though) were less likely to die early from ailments like heart disease, diabetes and even suicide. The study followed more than 200,000 people over 30 years, checking in every four years to monitor the subjects' coffee consumption levels. While the data doesn't show a definite link between coffee and longevity, it might be cause for further research into the potential perks of coffee.

The study did find that this increase in life span happened for both regular and decaf drinkers, suggesting that caffeine is probably not the key element in the health repercussions, and other contents of coffee beans might be responsible for these perceived benefits.

At any rate, researchers say the study should give people reason to pick up a cup with confidence. As long as you're drinking it in moderation, there's no reason for you to give up coffee as part of your daily routine. So drink up collegiettes, and live long and prosper!

Healthy Fixes for Your Unhealthy Food Cravings

College life can be stressful, and every collegiette ends up pulling an all-nighter at one point or another, which means late-night library sessions, your comfiest sweats and, of course, plenty of snacks. When a midnight study slump hits, so do the munchies, and we tend to reach for snacks to satisfy our cravings.

It’s safe to say that most collegiettes don’t crave healthy snacks, and most of us reach for chips and cookies over carrots. So how do you deal when unhealthy cravings hit? We talked to nutrition experts to find out the best ways to ward off cravings and to provide some healthy alternatives to munch on the next time a craving strikes.

How to ward off cravings

Cravings can be tricky to handle, especially if you’re exhausted or drained, and if left unchecked, they can lead to weight gain. Try these tips next time a craving strikes, and you’ll be surprised at your own willpower!

Recognize what’s causing your cravings

It’s important to recognize that food cravings are more about satisfying your emotions than your nutrient requirements. “Food cravings arise to satisfy emotional needs, such as reducing anxiety,” says Mary Hartley, a registered dietitian.

Joanne Larsen, a registered dietitian, also emphasizes the connection between cravings and emotions. “Cravings are in your head and relate to emotional memories associated with these foods as a reward,” Larsen says. We’ve all binged on Domino’s and downed our fair share of Ben & Jerry’s in times of distress, so it’s no wonder we reach for food to comfort ourselves.

Don’t tempt yourself

It sounds simple, but “if you don’t buy it, food can’t find its way into your mouth!” Larsen says. “Keep your food environment stocked with healthy options like fruit and tree nuts for snacking.”

It’s tempting to keep Easy Mac and junk food in your dorm room for snacking after the dining hall closes, but you’re only making it harder for yourself! Make a habit of heading to the local grocery store or farmer’s market on the weekend to pick up fresh fruits and veggies for the week so your minifridge is fully stocked for when cravings hit.

Eat often (and keep your diet varied!)

Brooke Schantz, a registered dietitian and CEO of Bitchin’ Nutrition, recommends eating at least three meals every day and consuming healthy snacks between meals to keep you full and craving-free. “Consuming a small meal or snack every three to four hours will help prevent cravings and keep your body full and satisfied,” Schantz says.

To make sure your meals and snacks are providing your body with everything it needs, include a good variety in your diet. “Eating a variety of foods from each food group ensures you are getting a wide variety of nutrients you need, and you’re less likely to crave specific foods,” Larsen says. She recommends consuming fruits, veggies, whole grains, dairy, healthy fats and a small amount of lean meat or beans daily to maintain a healthy and balanced diet that isn’t lacking nutrients (which could lead to nasty cravings!).

Get enough sleep

Larsen points out that “you’re more likely to overeat if you stay up late or are sleepy.” She recommends getting at least eight hours of sleep a night to help you avoid falling victim to late-night cravings.

“Avoid using your phone or tablet, as the light will reduce melatonin, which induces sleep,” Larsen adds. You can’t binge on Cheez-Its at midnight if you’re snoozing!

Don’t deprive yourself (or sweat a slipup!)

We’re all human, and we’re definitely all guilty of giving in to a craving every now and then. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you indulge in moderation.

“If you are craving a food, buy a single serving of cake, pie, etc.” Larsen advises. “I've generally found that low-fat, sugar-free versions of the full-fat, sugary food aren’t as satisfying, and you will eat more. Limiting portion size is more important.” That way you can satisfy your craving without being tempted to polish off the entire tub of ice cream.

And even if you do go overboard occasionally, don’t worry too much about that Domino’s order you and your roomie placed last night (even if you did order extra-cheesy breadsticks). “If you do overeat a food you crave, don’t feel guilty! It was just a poor choice,” Larsen says. “Get back on your healthy eating plan!”

Healthy alternatives

We all get cravings, and while it’s okay to indulge every now and then, sometimes you want to satisfy your craving without breaking the calorie bank. Here are some healthy and delicious alternatives for the most common food cravings.

Sugary snacks

For the collegiette with a serious sweet tooth, nothing sounds better than a pack of Oreos and some sour gummy worms. But instead of reaching for snacks loaded with artificial sweeteners and other nasty chemicals, satisfy your sweet tooth with the natural sugars found in fruit.

“Fruit is sweet and can help turn off your appetite,” says Larsen. Fruits like apples and raspberries are particularly good at filling you up."

If finding fresh fruit on campus is tricky, Schantz recommends opting for Greek yogurt to satisfy a sweet tooth.

Red meat

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying some red meat from time to time—just don’t overdo it! Other meats like poultry and seafood will still help balance out your iron levels but don’t contain as many saturated fats as red meat. For the vegetarian collegiette, make sure you’re getting enough iron by filling your diet with beans, dark-green leafy vegetables (like spinach), iron-enriched cereals, seeds and dried fruits (for a full list of the foods highest in iron, check out WebMD).

Chocolate

Good news: Chocolate can actually be good for you! It contains tons of antioxidants and can improve heart health as well as blood pressure. That doesn’t mean you should polish off an entire bag of M&M’s, but you don’t need to deprive yourself either.

Instead of milk chocolate candies, opt for solid dark chocolate that contains at least 70 percent cacao, which is lower in calories than milk chocolate and is richer in antioxidants that can protect you from heart disease.

For a sweet drink, Larsen suggests whipping up some hot cocoa made from dark baker’s chocolate. For an easy recipe, Larsen recommends breaking off about one ounce of chocolate from a dark chocolate bar and heating it up in one cup of skim milk sweetened with your favorite non-calorie sweetener, either in the microwave or on the stove. Enjoy your chocolate, but in moderation!

Salty snacks

Reaching for salty snacks like potato chips is often an indicator ofstress, so don’t be surprised if you experience more salty cravings around finals. Curb your salty cravings with snacks that contain small amounts of salt, like lightly salted almonds.

Larsen also recommends noshing on tree nuts, walnuts, pecans and pistachios. “The healthy fat will keep you satisfied until the next meal,” she says. Create your own trail mix of unsalted nuts and keep it in a container in your room for when a salty craving strikes!

There’s nothing wrong with giving into the occasional craving, but knowing how to resist cravings and what to reach for instead will keep you from going overboard.

Rihanna is Debuting Her Own Line of Marijuana

So that may explain why Rihanna has left us waiting for her upcoming album, Anti, to drop. Rumor has it that the star has been dedicating her time to a new endeavor: Her own line of Marijuana. (Because, obviously.)

Rihanna reportedly announced her new side project while attending the Cannabis Cup in Jamaica last weekend, and the name couldn't possibly be more fitting: MaRihanna. According to Marie Claire, the line will feature three different strains called Karribean Kush, Haitian Haze and Jamaican High Grade, and will be available to anyone living in the states of Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska, where cannabis is currently legal.

Though she has yet to confirm that MaRihanna is actually happening, if the project becomes a reality, Rihanna will be following in the footsteps of another famous celeb stoner Snoop Dogg, who also recently announced his own line, Leafs by Snoop.

Between her role as creative director at Puma, her own line of socks, founding an upcoming beauty agency and now even her own line of cannabis, we're declaring RiRi the queen of celebrity side hustles. We can almost forgive her for making us wait (impatiently!) for Anti(Almost!)

The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year Is...An Emoji?

$

It’s a time-honored tradition. Every year publications have a tradition of marking and honoring the best of the best—People Magazine has the “Sexiest Man Alive,” Glamour has the “Woman of the Year,” GQ has “Men of the Year.” Oxford Dictionary? For obvious reasons, it has the “Word of the Year.”

For the past 11 years, Oxford Dictionaries has named a Word of the Year. The award is given to a word that, according to Oxford, “best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.” Past words of the year have included words such as vape (2014), selfie (2013), GIF (2012) and unfriend (2009).

Keeping up with the theme of digital words, Oxford chose a word for 2015 that isn’t even a word at all. Instead, they chose an emoji, known formally as the “Face with Tears of Joy."

It sounds funny that the word of the year isn’t even a word, but after pairing up with mobile technology business SwiftKey, Oxford University Press discovered that this particular emoji was the most popular in the entire world. It rose in popularity in the U.S. from 9 percent to 17 percent over the past year, while the word "emoji," which has been around since the late ‘90s, tripled in use just this past year alone.

Along with the word of the year, comes a shortlist of those which were considered to win the top honor. These words include the ever so popular phrases "on fleek" and "lumbersexual," as well as words such as refugee, ad blocker, they (singular), Brexit, "Dark Web" and "sharing economy."

The statistics don't lie, but what do you think, collegiettes? Is the tears of joy emoji the most popular in your phone?

The Global Gender Pay Gap Won't Close for 118 Years

Finally! Women will get equal pay to men...118 years from now, that is.

According to the World Economic Forum's 2015 Global Gender Gap Report, an extra quarter of a billion women have entered the workforce since 2006. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it would be a lot more empowering if we were paid equally. The report shows that while the number of women in the workforce has increased, our gender pay gap has widened. In 2006, while the global average annual earning of a man was $11,000, it was $6,000 for the average women; compare this to 2015, where the global average annual earning is $21,000 for a man and $11,000 for a woman.

So finally, women are making the same amount...that men did in 2006. What a shocker.

To make matters worse, the World Economic Forum estimates it will take approximately 118 years for women and men to be paid equally. But why is that?

Well, according to the Guardian, the gender wage gap has hardly improved since the financial crisis of 2008, and many people still subscribe to past ideals of women staying at home while men bring home the bacon—leading to bad parental leave and childcare policies that don't allow women the flexibility they need at work.

However, what doesn't make much sense is that the report indicates a reversal in education, according to the BBC. In 98 countries, more women attend universities than men. And to top it off, 68 countries employ more women than men in skilled positions, such as doctors, lawyers and teachers. Given this, we should definitely be paying women more.

But the impact of the gender pay gap goes beyond just a lack of money. It causes women worldwide to become less motivated and passionate, and feel less supported. And, as the Guardian reports, pay discrimination is not only a loss to women, but also to employers and the world's economy at large.

“It’s the same with all sorts of discrimination, whether it’s of a sexual orientation or whatever,” Willem Adema, senior economist for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, told the Guardian. “If discrimination means people not pursuing individual aspirations to the full … the economy loses out on a lot of talent.”

While the feminist movement is still going strong, we still have a long way to go.

What do you think about the gender pay gap, and how does it affect you?

I'm Pro-Life But I Support Planned Parenthood

I am a feminist. I believe that a woman has the right to decide what she does with her body. I believe that women should have easy access to the various forms of birth control that exist. I believe in the importance of sex education. I believe in all human rights. I believe that everyone deserves a chance to be well educated, to make their own decisions and to have the best that can be given to them. I believe that a human life is precious. It is because of these beliefs that I am pro-life.

And it is because of these beliefs that I am pro-Planned Parenthood.

Saying that a woman has the right to decide what she does with her body is often an argument made for the pro-choice side. However, this statement has many levels. A woman should not be judged for choosing to use birth control. A woman should not be viewed as an object that has to look, act or dress a certain way. That is why I say a woman has a right to decide what she does with her own body. However, as pro-life, I draw the line when those decisions affect another existing human’s life. To me, abortion takes away the right to life that the baby has. Despite being pro-life, I am still pro-Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood is about more than abortions. In fact, according to their 2013-2014 annual report, only 3 percent of all services provided by Planned Parenthood are abortions. The Washington Post confirmed that that percentage is 327,653 abortions out of 10.6 million services. That is a large number of abortions, but it is a small fraction in comparison to all other services Planned Parenthood provides.

Planned Parenthood is a health care provider, educator, and human rights advocate. They focus mainly on reproductive healthcare and women’s healthcare. Planned Parenthood provides cancer screening and prevention such as pap tests and breast exams, STD/STI testing such as HIV tests and STI treatment, contraception, adoption referrals, family practice services and other women’s health services such as pregnancy tests and prenatal services. These other services are crucial, as not all women have access to them except through Planned Parenthood. Defunding Planned Parenthood would have many negative effects, especially on low-income women. One could say that many abortions are able to be avoided because of the services Planned Parenthood provides. Without Planned Parenthood, many women would have no access to birth control. Without Planned Parenthood, there would be less access to sex education. Without Planned Parenthood, there would be few to no options for prenatal care for low-income women or women in difficult circumstances, such as a pregnant, struggling teenage girl.

It should also be noted that defunding Planned Parenthood will not end all abortions; it will end safe abortions. Planned Parenthood abortions are in-clinic procedures performed in a safe environment. These procedures are often cheaper than procedures done in hospitals, which allows low-income women to still have a safe abortion. Of course, most pro-life individuals, such as myself, would prefer adoption to be the first answer to an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy. Planned Parenthood can provide the necessary prenatal care for needed for a woman to have a safe pregnancy. The second option for an unplanned pregnancy is parenting. As mentioned previously, Planned Parenthood can provide the necessary prenatal care which is an extremely important service for single mothers. They can also provide certain helpful services through their Family Planning Benefit Program that care for families and women planning on having children.

Defunding Planned Parenthood is not the answer to ending abortion. Focusing on sex education, easy access to contraceptives, and women’s healthcare is an answer to decreasing abortion. Making abortion illegal could be an answer to ending abortion, especially if other safe and welcoming options—like the ones provided by Planned Parenthood—are available to women with unwanted pregnancies. This is a difficult and sensitive subject. One must remember that there are real humans who are being impacted by the hateful things both the pro-life side and the pro-choice side are saying. Unwanted pregnancy is one of the most life-changing and difficult things a woman can go through, and there is truly no easy or simple answer or solution. Every woman and every circumstance is different.

7 Styles That Look Even Better With Second-Day Hair

We can all appreciate the kind of wash day that leaves hair looking oh so fresh and clean. But has your hair ever looked a little bit too perfect? As it turns out, you might find your favorite up-do not cooperating or your curls not bouncing enough with just-shampooed hair. That's why we're here to show you how second-, third- and even fourth-day hair can serve as the optimal template for styling. Even better, with many stylists advising against daily hair washing, there's no reason not to get more life out of your last shampoo with these approved looks!

1. Super High Top Knot

Do you have shoulder-length or longer hair? And are you looking for a style that can carry you through day four completely worry-free? This is it. Whether you opt for a trendy and messy top bun or something smoother, this look will have you out the door in no time.

Need some quick tips on styling? “I personally like to keep these in a neater state. A little baby hair around the edges or a few fly aways here and there is cool,” says Shaddah Elyse, professional hair artist and owner of The Platinum Studio in Baltimore, MD. And if you need a bit more help forming the bun, try using a bun shaper ($6, Nordstrom) to add more oomph to your likely-flat unwashed hair. “When the bun gets a little roughed up and still has a lot of definition, that’s perfect!” Elyse says.

To achieve this look, gather your hair in a high ponytail, slide on your bun shaper and begin to wrap your hair around. Use bobby pins to secure the ends of your hair and conclude with a finishing spray.

2. Sleek Ponytail

How about we channel our inner Beyoncé with this low and sleek look? Overall, ponytails are an easy, low-maintenance style that can easily take you from casual daywear to a night out on the town, and second-day ponies are no exception.

“This can be worn higher up on the head or lower," says Elyse, but "[m]ake sure the back and edges are sleek and the ponytail is polished.” Here, the natural oils and any product build-up from second-day hair will work to your advantage, giving that shiny, smoothed-down look you're craving.

3. Days-Old Wash-And-Go

A wash-and-go almost always looks better the second day, thanks to lived-in, soft curls with the perfect amount of natural frizz. But how exactly can you make your wash-and-go last without falling flat? “This style is great on the second day because you get to sleep on it and rough it up a bit. This will make the look nice and big as the days continue,” Elyse says. Simply enjoy rocking your huge second-day locks!

4. Flexi Rod Styling

Thought your second-day hair would turn out great, but the exact opposite happened with no time to wash? Using a flexi rod set ($14.49, Target) will have you looking brand new in no time. “This is a style I do for my clients for low maintenance and longevity. This style is cute the first day but way better the second and third day. The style gets a little looser but still has definition. It has a more natural look by the second day instead of looking like neat Shirley Temple curls. We don't like those!” Elyse says.

Start out by de-tangling an old hairstyle, then choose your favorite lightweight hair cream and oil. Next, section off your hair and smooth the products in. Finally, take each section and wrap your hair around the flexi rod toward your face or away from your face—just be sure to keep all curls in the same direction! Overall, this style is very simple and the results will give you the shine and bounce that you need to revamp your second-day hair.

5. Crown Braid

You may act like royalty, but do you look the part? This style is perfect for any French-braiding whiz, and the crown can help hide any oily patches that arise from leaving hair unwashed.

“Create a French braid or cornrow along the perimeter of your head, starting by either ear,” Elyse says. It's as simple as that! And with its regal feel and compliment-worthy finish, this style is one of the best ways to switch your bad hair day into a trendy and dramatic style that will have everyone staring for the right reasons. Best of all, your semi-dingy hair will hold the braid far better than newly-washed locks.

6. Waves

Waves are great when you want to keep your unwashed hair from looking flat. Achieve the look by using a large curling iron, a sea salt spray and the scrunch technique, or by sleeping in two to four braids. No matter what, the style will give your second-day hair a great textured look. “Who doesn’t love a beachy tousled wave or braid out? Everything that gives off a little frizz to it is always good,” Elyse says. And what better way to show off some frizz than with second-day hair? Save yourself from the hassle of using too many hair products by relying on your natural oils to bring out the shine and hold in your hair strands, and leave it to your semi-dirty hair to maintain that loose curl hairspray-free!

7. Fishtail Braid

Channel your inner bohemian princess and rock this sexy over-the-shoulder fishtail. The loose and messy texture is perfect for an effortless look, and imperfect second-day hair just emphasizes the care-free vibe of this braid.

But if you're worried about achieving this more complicated style, we are here to help! First, take all of your hair and pull it to the back or one side of your face. Then, after you secure your hair in a ponytail, start braiding. “Divide hair in two sections. Alternate taking a slither of hair from the outside of both sections. Tease the braid with a comb or pull the sides of the braid to give it a more edgy look,” Elyse says. Still confused? Take a look at this tutorial and remember that the more loose and tousled the braid, the better!

On days without a wash, you can either leave your dirty hair down in all of its glory or take advantage of its versatile texture and try something new! Either way, these hairstyles are sure to spice up second-day hair, leaving you looking styled and sassy (not unclean and undone).

I Tried Living Like a Kardashian For a Week & Here's What Happened

Whether you love the Kardashian women or can’t stand them, there’s one thing we all know to be true… Those ladies look damn good.

Every day, they wake up and put on their best face for the world—with the help of a few professionals, of course. A few weeks back, I set out to make myself up like a Kardashian for one whole week, head to toe. My roommates were all too eager to watch and photograph.

Bad, real bad, Michael Jackson.

I thought maybe I’d get a few weird looks, or a few less-than-subtle stares that said, “Who does that girl think she is?” But, as it turns out, wearing mostly neutrals, baring some cleavage and wearing sunglasses inside in Washington, D.C. isn’t all that shocking.

It didn’t take long to realize that the challenge was actually in taking the perfect picture, not matching the Kardashians’ style. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a huge stretch for me to dress like a Kardashian, as I didn’t need to buy anything new for this experiment. I was able to use clothes and makeup that I already had—mimicking their style wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. It was taking and editing Instagram photos that proved to be tricky. It’s an art, after all.

The Kardashians are masters of “finding the light,” knowing their angles and working the camera in a way that looks absolutely effortless. For me, I found that taking picture after picture was an exercise in confidence more than anything else.

By the end of the week, after taking a few tips from the selfie queens themselves, I learned a few things.

  1. Pictures are never perfect the first time…
  2. And you’ll always take about 40 before you settle on one.
  3. Having a friend on the other side of the camera to make you laugh will change your selfie game. A genuine smile looks good on everyone.
  4. You have a good angle, and finding it just takes practice.

Would I keep living like a Kardashian? Not without a professional team behind me (and I don't think my friends are up for being my full-time glam squad)! But really—even though I can now consider myself a master selfie-taker (almost), that time spent photographing every angle is better spent actually enjoying the scene your photographing... so for now, I'll just be me—just don't be too surprised if you get a few more Snapchat selfies from time to time, though!

6 Pieces of Advice We Always Give But Never Take

$

We’ve all been there. Our friend comes to us with a MAJOR problem, and the next hour is filled with tears, a whole lot of venting and maybe some chocolate. Since we’re such good friends, we sit with her, dry her tears and comfort her with some wise words of wisdom.

Despite being young adults, we like to think we have all the answers to our friends’ problems. Even though we have the best intentions when we give others guidance, more often than not, we never actually take to heart ourselves the advice we dole out. It’s not that we’re hypocritical; it’s just hard to listen to our own advice. Here’s a list of all the pieces of advice we love to give but hate to take.

1. Maaaaybe you shouldn’t hook up with him.

Your friend has been obsessing about this guy she met on Tinder for DAYS. Apparently he’s the perfect combination of charming and carefree, but you can’t seem to get over his muscle-tee profile picture or “Work Hard, Play Harder” tagline. When she sees him at a party Saturday night, it takes all your strength to hold her back and remind her that she deserves better than a guy who routinely calls her “bro.” He may be cute, but let’s have some standards here.

Of course, you totally ignore your bestie’s warnings when you see that guy you used to hook up with freshman year. Sure, he never texted you back and mostly ignores you when you pass him on campus, but he’s smiling at you now and offering you a beer, and you can’t help but want to go full-on make-out right here, right now. It’s not your fault that you’re attracted to guys who play hard to get! The heart wants what it wants. #noregrets

2. For the millionth time, don’t text your ex. I’m begging you.

Part of the moving-on process is that essential 30-minute debate of if you should text your ex. As an outside observer, you’ve talked your friend out of many drunken (and sober) phone calls even though they “were soulmates,” she misses him or, “saying hi isn’t that big of a deal!” No matter how many times you remind her, she still does it anyway, and you’re the one who has to deal with her sobbing into her pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Maybe if she just took your advice, she wouldn’t be listening to Adele. Again.

Then Saturday night rolls around, and your second glass of wine has convinced you that a simple “what’s new” text to your ex shows that you still care, but not too much. It’s not like you’re looking for anything; you just want to make sure he knows that you’re doing fine without him. And really, it’s so casual that it doesn’t even matter, right? It’s just ONE text. You’re totally over it, though. Promise.

3. Well, life isn’t fair, so suck it up.

In the dining hall, your friend, who’s on the verge of tears, says that she didn’t get that leadership position she wanted. She keeps whining about how she’s more qualified than the other candidate, plus it’s just ridiculous that people didn’t like her speech! It just isn’t fair. Why is this happening to her?And even though you feel her pain, her complaining has gone on long enough. No one said life was supposed to be fair, so you tell your friend to put on her big-girl pants and move on.

On the other hand, it’s really unfair that you got rejected from your dream internship or that you got stuck with the worst random roommate ever. How could this happen to you? Bad things shouldn’t happen to awesome people! And because you’re awesome, your hour-long sulking session is totally justified. Sorry you’re not sorry.

4. Stop overthinking this ONE text to your crush. It’s ONE text.

Your friend has drafted and re-drafted a text to that cute guy she met at a party last week. While she continuously agonizes over “Hi” versus “What’s up,” you politely remind her that one emoji won’t really make a difference because he probably won’t respond for hours anyway. Just hit send already. All this overthinking is making you exhausted.

Of course this is totally irrelevant when you’re racking your brain to figure out what your crush REALLY meant by that “see you later” comment the other day on campus. Should you text him? Maybe you should wait until he Snapchats you before you do anything. Or you could always plan a totally-unexpected-but-completely-planned run-in tomorrow on the way to class. It’s not that you’re overthinking things; you’re just choosing to be particularly thoughtful over the important things. That’s all.

5. Cut your roomies some slack. It’s all about living peacefully together, remember?

Every time you come home, one of your roommates complains about how your other roomie always leaves dirty dishes in the sink and it’s grossss. She goes on about how she’s going to tell her off when she gets home, but you take a deep breath and tell your annoyed roomie to choose her battles wisely. Dirty dishes are irritating, but so not worth starting a roommate war over.

Once you’ve mollified your roommate, you realize that the skirt she borrowed last weekend is lying in a crumpled mess on your bedroom floor, reeks of beer and has a huge stain on it! How could she? She KNEW it was your favorite skirt, and you specifically told her to keep it clean! You can’t wait to give her a piece of your mind…

6. Chill out; it’s only one bad grade. It doesn’t even matter.

You could swear it’s the end of the world by the way your friend is talking about getting a C on her paper. Clearly this one grade means that her GPA will drop, which means she probably won’t get a job after graduation, and that will somehow lead to her living at home with her parents forever and owning 12 cats. Your joke about things escalating quickly only gets you death glares. Whatever, you were just trying to help.

But that B- you got on that term paper that you worked on ALL weekend is actually the worst thing that’s ever happened to you. Of COURSE this grade matters. This one B- basically determines if you get into your top grad school, which obviously affects if you get your perfect job and meet the man of your dreams (because you’re going to meet him at work when you’re 25. That’s the plan, duh). You’re not overreacting because this grade ruins everything. Literally EVERYTHING.

No matter what situation our friends are in, we always have the best advice to give them. That’s what friends are for, right? Even though we know we’re helping, sometimes we forget to take that advice ourselves. Maybe we should start taking it to heart more. We clearly are great advice-givers, after all!
