Hearst Announces New Partnership Between 'Seventeen' and 'Cosmopolitan'

The Hearst Corporation announced yesterday that there's a major shake-up going on at Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazines; magazine lovers around the country, take note!

Under this structure change up, Cosmo’s current editor-in-chief, Joanna Coles (pictured below), has been given the title of editorial director of Seventeen, thereby extending her responsibilities to both popular magazines. Similarly, Cosmo’s senior vice president and publishing director, Donna Kalajian Lagani, has been given more territory to oversee, which involves the marketing and publishing departments.

Ann Shoket, Seventeen's editor-in-chief of seven years, has decided to step down, but will still work with Hearst as a consultant on a new venture that has yet to be revealed. No word yet on the next editor-in-chief, but we've got our eyes and ears open!

The reshaping of the two magazines comes under the direction of Hearst Magazines president David Carey, who plans to draw together a new millennial-targeted audience that spans 60 million readers between print and digital platforms, according to Women’s Wear Daily

“I want Seventeen to be the playbook to go to college,” Coles explained to WWD. “I think it gets you up to going to college, and at the end of your first year of college, you start subscribing to Cosmo.”

It only makes sense that the two magazines are creating a bond, since Carey remarks that the typical readers of both magazines overlap in terms of their interests in style, entertainment, independence and equality.

Magazine restructuring has a way of shaking things up a bit, but we're pretty sure this partnership will prove to be positive for both readers and the company. Just take a look at how well Lucky has done since Eva Chen came along!

Colgate University Students Protest Bigotry On Campus

Over 300 students at Colgate University staged a sit-in spanning nearly five days last week in response to the mistreatment of minorities at the small, upstate New York college. It ended Friday afternoon when the university administration agreed to support a plan of action crafted by the students themselves.

The demonstration came as a result of a number of anonymous racist comments made on the social media app Yik Yak and in person to students riding the campus shuttle. To get a sense of the comments that were made, the comment “I chose Colgate for the lack of it's [sic] diversity” was on the very mild end of the spectrum.

Students occupied Colgate’s admissions building in an effort to have the university take action against its lack of diversity. The Colgate University Association of Critical Collegians, the organization that headed this protest, created a movement and coined the hashtags “#CanYouHearUsNow” and “#SoThisIsColgate” to raise awareness about the bigotry students had to endure. The ACC even published multiple YouTube videos promoting the movement and sharing student testimonials.

According to Inside Higher Ed, members of the ACC drafted a plan for the school to adopt that would ease the current tensions and promote better awareness of student diversity. Points in the plan include required faculty participation in diversity training and hiring more minority faculty.

For a better picture of the diversity (or lack thereof) at Colgate, here’s a clear breakdown. During the 2013-2014 academic year, the school had 2,871 students, which at some schools is smaller than the freshman class alone. Of the student body, 67.8 percent were white. 3.4 percent were Asian (which amounts to 98 students), 4.2 percent were African American and 7.9 percent were Hispanic, according to Colgate University’s website.

One thing remains true in relation to the outcome of this protest: the student voice will be heard. Students from the ACC declared they would continue their sit-in for as long as it would take until the university agreed to carry out their plan of action, and that's exactly what's happened with the administration's release of a statement of support.

6 Signs You’re in a Relationship for the Wrong Reasons

You’ve been in a relationship for a while now, and you thought it was working out fine, until one day it hit you – something felt off. You couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was, so you decided to ignore it, but now you’re starting to have serious doubts about your future as a couple. Maybe you find yourself enjoying the security of your relationship more than actually being with your SO, or maybe you’re hanging onto the wrong person for fear of not finding anyone else. To help you decide what to do, here are six signs that say it's time to move on.

1. You want the security

When you’ve been with someone a long time, imagining life without him or her can be terrifying. Perhaps you’ve noticed some signs that your SO isn’t right for you, but you’re afraid of losing a partner and a friend.

Abby, a junior at Columbia College, started dating her best friend her junior year of high school. “We continued to date three years after that,” Abby says. “I realized we weren’t right together when I went away to college and we had to do the long-distance thing. I realized I was hanging onto the relationship more because of the comfortableness of it and security it brought me.”

For Abby, staying with her boyfriend was easier at first. “I felt since I was in a long-term relationship, I was a lot more mature and ready to grow up, and I was scared I would lose that maturity when we broke up,” she says.

Thankfully, it turned out that Abby’s worries were unfounded. “Now that we’re broken up, we’re both much happier and it’s only made me realize more that we weren’t meant to stay together,” she says.

Losing someone who has been so important in your life will not be easy, but if your instinct tells you that something is wrong, you need to trust it, says Carole Lieberman, M.D., a Beverly Hills psychiatrist and author.

“If you keep sensing that the relationship you're in is not right, even if you can't yet put your finger on why, ask your boyfriend for some time off,” Lieberman says. “Then see how you feel when you put some distance between you and can get a better perspective.”

2. You don’t want to be alone

If you’re used to being in a relationship or you’ve been single for a while, you might start to feel lonely. This could lead you to stay with the wrong person for fear of never finding anyone better. “Women often stay in bad relationships for many reasons, such as being afraid of not finding a better boyfriend and being alone,” Lieberman says. “They convince themselves that even a selfish, boring or abusive boyfriend is better than no boyfriend at all.” But even if your SO is perfectly nice, you shouldn't stay with him or her if it doesn't feel right.

Beyond pure loneliness, staying with the wrong person could be a sign of low self-esteem, according to Marla Martenson, a matchmaker, author and speaker. “I have heard women say, 'If I leave, I will never find anyone else,'” Martenson says. “This is so far from the truth, but in the moment, it feels like he is the only guy on the planet that would commit to her.”

Isobel*, a junior at Illinois State University, was once in this situation. “I was in a relationship for a long time [partly] because I didn't think there was anything else out there,” she says. “Even though the relationship was bad and we kept fighting, I didn't want to end it.”

So if you find yourself holding onto someone simply because you’re scared of being alone, remind yourself that you will find the right person eventually. And you can’t do that if you’re with the wrong one.

3. You don’t want to lose your SO’s friends or family

If you got close to your partner's friends or family in the course of your relationship, it can make the idea of breaking up that much harder. This happened to Isobel, who says, “When you break up with someone and you're close to their family, you feel like you're breaking up with 25 people.”

Even if you care about your SO, your affection for the people around him might be delaying an inevitable breakup. “I was recently dating a guy who I liked a lot, but I knew deep down the relationship didn't have long-term potential,” says Allie*, a senior at the University of Michigan. “I stayed with him for longer than I should have because … I loved his family!”

Be honest with yourself: If you know something is wrong, don't stick around just because you love your SO's entourage and don’t want to lose them. “Getting along with my boyfriend's family is so crucial to me, that when I had found someone who had a family I fit in with so well, it made me overlook the signs that he and I weren't meant to be,” Allie says. “I inevitably ended things because he and I didn't have the connection needed to sustain the relationship.”

Even though losing so many people at once will be difficult, nothing can justify staying in a relationship you know isn't meant to be.

4. You’re using your SO

Perhaps your SO brings you something that you wouldn't have without him or her, whether it's help with homework or a higher social status. This is great– unless it becomes the only reason you stay in the relationship.

According to Dana Corey, a relationship expert, girls often worry about losing their social status if they break up with their partners. But you might also be worried about losing other perks that come with being in a relationship, even if you're not fully aware of it.

Lola*, a sophomore at Denison University, dated a guy for two years but realized after one year that she didn't like him anymore. “He was extraordinarily clingy and needy, but I stayed with him an entire year afterwards,” Lola says. “I now realize that I was using him for help with my classes, because he was originally my tutor.”

Although you are probably aware that you are using your SO, you might not admit it to yourself – especially if the benefits seem to outweigh the costs of staying with him or her. However, “at the most basic level, relationships are about give and take,” says Jodi R. R. Smith, president and owner of Mannersmith Consulting. “But as a confident college woman, once you are only enjoying the perks and not the SO, it is time to move onto the next relationship.”

5. You’re scared of breaking up

Maybe you know that your relationship isn't working out, but the thought of breaking up terrifies you. That being said, “the fear of what might happen when you break up is not enough of a reason to stay,” Smith says. “If you simply fear making the other person sad, know that they will be equally sad to find out you do not love them the way they deserve to be loved. If you fear them yelling at you, find a neutral spot where others are about so that he/she will be less likely to yell.”

Lola knew a breakup was much needed, but she found herself delaying it that extra year. “I was scared he would grieve too badly and would need me too much if I wasn't there,” she says. “I was scared that he would hurt himself, or that he would hate me for hurting him.” As soon as a situation like this arises, you should talk to a school counselor about how to get yourself out of this relationship.

Lola’s relationship was a very serious case, but breaking up is never easy. However, “the sooner you address the conversation, the least amount of pain there will be,” Corey says. “Unless breaking up is mutual, there is going to be pain.”

So, yes, breaking up will most likely hurt both you and your SO, but “too many women take this as a sign that they shouldn't break up with someone who really isn't right for them,” Corey says. “Sadness is normal. Feel the grief, and then move on.”

Lola's relationship is proof that delaying a breakup will be harmful to both partners. “The relationship really hurt me because I didn’t want to be in it,” she says. “He brainwashed me into thinking that if I ever broke up with him, he would become a total mess and basically lose his mind.” It took therapy for Lola to build up the courage to break up with her ex, which goes to show just how difficult this situation can be. But if you know that you need to get out of your current relationship, you should take all the necessary measures to do so.

Claire*, a senior at Notre Dame University, would definitely agree. “I stayed with a guy for way too long out of guilt,” she says. “He was always complaining about how girls never liked him and how he would end up alone. The long, drawn-out breakup was awful but necessary!”

6. You think your SO will change

Emily*, a senior at Oklahoma State University, once dated a guy even though he was rude and made fun of the friend who had introduced them originally. “I really didn't like him, but I will give it to him that he was very handsome,” Emily says of first meeting her ex. So when she heard that this guy thought she was cute, she tried flirting with him despite her negative first impression. One thing lead to another, and the two of them started going out a few months later.

Emily had ignored her ex's insensitivity, but sure enough, “he began to be rude and sarcastic” with her, the same way he had acted with her friend. Corey says that “many women feel the inkling of an intuitive 'red flag,' but ignore it out of a mistaken idea that [their SO] will change or that [they are] the one who can change him.”

But, according to Martenson, you could also blame your hormones. “The guy who is sooo cute, sooo sexy, but sooo bad for you is hard to resist,” she warns. “I did it myself – I married the wrong guy because he was gorgeous and French. He treated me like crap, but my common sense flew right out the window when I looked into his green eyes and heard that French accent.”

Aside from showing us that even love experts make mistakes, Martenson's experience taught her the value of respect. “If your guy is respectful of you and accepts you for who you are, he is a gem and someone to hold onto,” she says.

For your SO to behave badly is one thing, but for you to think you can change him or her is another. “You cannot be responsible for someone else's happiness,” Smith says. “The only way the other person is going to change is when he/she is good and ready. You staying will likely perpetuate the bad behavior. By leaving, you change the dynamic and give the person an incentive [to change his/her attitude].”

You can't stay in a bad relationship in the hopes that your SO will change overnight. If you really want him or her to evolve, Smith advises that you recommend counseling or self-help books to him or her—if you are comfortable enough to do so—but sticking around will only make matters worse.

According to Lieberman, “a relationship that's working feels light, easy and fun, like waking up to a bright spring morning with lots of promise in the air.” If you can't relate to her swoon-worthy words or if you recognize yourself in any of the signs we listed, it could be time for you to break off a dead-end relationship. Although breaking up is hard and nobody wants to be alone, keep in mind that in the long run, both of these options will trump staying with the wrong person any day.

7 Reasons Why You'll Fall in Love With 'The Best of Me'

Remember that feeling you had when you watched The Notebook for the first (or thirtieth) time? You know, that feeling that made you just want to yell out, "If you're a bird, I'm a bird!" and throw your arms around some Ryan Gosling lookalike ASAP? Maybe you even attempted to dance to slow jazz in the middle of a deserted road; we wouldn't judge you.

Since we all already know - a little too well - the thoughts that every girl has while watching The Notebook, we can say with certainty that we've found the next tearjerking, heartwarming, all-around romantic movie that will steal your breath away à la Allie and Noah: it's called The Best of Me, and it's based on yet another fab Nicholas Sparks novel!

We went behind the scenes on the set in Louisiana to bring you the inside scoop on our new favorite chick flick - check out all of the reasons why you're about to fall in love with fall's best new blockbuster, in theaters October 17th!

1. The love story is timeless

You never forget your first love, and things aren't any different for Dawson (played by James Marsden and Luke Bracey) and Amanda (played by Michelle Monaghan and Liana Liberato), high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart (Seriously, imagine the sparks flying!). The epic love story shifts from the teenage romance to the modern-day reunion, capturing all of the happiness and heartarche of first true love (and the wrenching choices we face when confronted with those elusive second chances).

"The beauty of their relationship," explains Young Dawson actor Luke Bracey, "I think, is that it takes Amanda convincing [Dawson] that he's worth being loved and loving. You find there [are] some beautiful moments where you do see he gets to laugh and really be free, and you get the sense, I think, it's for the first time in his life, and then that's one of the really special things about their relationship. She gives him his freedom to be himself, to know that it's all right to laugh, and make mistakes, and love, and I think it's a really special relationship."

2. The man candyis gorgeous

We could pretty much have made reason #1 "James Marsden" and called it quits on this list, because what collegiette needs more convincing after hearing those two little words? We think Michelle Monaghan put it best when we met on the set: "James and I have had some really fun great scenes," she told Her Campus. "Look at him," she went on, gesturing at Marsden. "He's standing under the ice cream truck right now. He's so cute! I mean, look at him. Don't you just want to scoop him back [here]?" Um, yes, but we didn't realize that was an option?!

Still, believe it or not, our favorite rom-com actor isn't even the only man candy making this movie worth a watch. Allow us to introduce you to Luke Bracey, the Aussie actor you're going to spend the entirety of the film (and probably your fall semester) swooning over. Known for his previous roles in The November Man and Monte Carlo (we know you remember that beautiful Australian backpacker!), Bracey might just steal the show as Marsden's too-attractive-for-words 18-year-old self.

Twice the man candy, double the viewing pleasure. Seriously, between The Notebook star James Marsden and up-and-coming cutie Luke Bracey, we feel totally torn in our affections. Can't we just love them both equally?! Oh right, they're playing the same guy. So yes, yes we can.

3. The leading ladies are lovely

As busy as we were swooning over those two Hollywood hotties, we made more than enough time to be in awe of leading ladies Michelle Monaghan (of True Detective, Gone Baby Gone and Made of Honor fame) and Liana Liberato (of If I Stay and Stuck in Love). Simply put, Monaghan is one of the loveliest people we've ever met in person, so we have a feeling that her Amanda will definitely give Rachel McAdams' Allie a run for her money.

Plus, newcomer Liberato, who was only 18 when the film was shot, is totally one of us! Collegiettes, she could easily be your BFF roomie, if she wasn't so busy dominating the silver screen. Totally bubbly, totally friendly and 100 percent talented, Liberato is one of the best reasons to fall in love with The Best of Me; come on, it's like watching yourself up on the big screen!

4. The chemistry is undeniable

We know what you're thinking: no chemistry could ever compare to Allie and Noah's in The Notebook, but we beg to differ! Want proof?

"Michelle [Monaghan] and I had about an 11-minute love scene take," explains Marsden (Cut to us swooning yet again). "[Monaghan] is such a joy to work with," Marsden continues. "I'm from the Midwest, and she is too, and it's just good to work with somebody that you actually really do have intimate chemistry with. And she's a sweetheart." When Marsden whisked Monaghan away on set... sigh, they're just too cute.

The chemistry doesn't just stop with Marsden and Monaghan; Bracey and Liberato have their fair share of fireworks on screen, too. "[Dawson and Amanda] bring out parts of each other that I don't think they would have seen if they weren't together," says Liberato. "I think it's because he's so mysterious, and that just draws her in. And he's also handsome! But I think there's something about him that really just intrigues her, and she doesn't know anything about him, so she wants to know more."

Oh, and you know that infamous scene with Noah and Allie kissing in the rain? Get ready for a scene to rival The Notebook's in The Best of Me! As Liberato pointed out, "It just kind of solidifies the fact that you're doing a Nicholas Sparks movie when you're kissing a guy - a really attractive guy - in the rain." Dying to see it!

5. The sets are incredible

Nicholas Sparks books-turned-movies are known for capturing all of the glamour and timelessness of the south, and The Best of Me is no different. When Her Campus went behind the scenes, we were whisked away to a gorgeous plantation an hour outside of New Orleans: the character Amanda's family home, the Collier house. Think large porches, sweeping lawns, shady Spanish moss, a romantic old swing and a stray alligator or two (seriously, one showed up on set!).

Not all of the movie is set in such scenic locales - there's a whole range from the good to the bad to the ugly, since the characters have such ups and downs in life - but trust us, you'll be won over instantly by that sweet southern charm!

6. The soundtrack is AMAZING

No romantic flick is complete without a killer soundtrack, and The Best of Me totally takes the cake. Lady Antebellum wrote "I Did With You" specifically for the movie, and other crooners like Hunter Hayes, Kacey Musgraves, Colbie Caillat and more will play while the action unfolds! If you're a firm believer that country music is the best music, you'll go nuts in the movie theater!

7. Oh, and did we mention Nicholas Sparks wrote the book?

Okay, so we've mentioned it maybe 10 times already, but that doesn't change the fact that Nicholas Sparks must be a GENIUS. Seriously, how does he know the way to all of our hearts?! Between The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Safe Haven, Dear John and all the rest, we're just not sure we can take any more love and heartbreak (just kidding, we totally can).

When we asked Sparks to share his thoughts on the Dawson and Amanda love story (and what collegiettes like us can learn from it), he imparted a little romance master wisdom: "Your parents often don't think it, but it doesn't matter when you first fall in love; it's real. [They think], oh, you're too young to understand. Absolutely not - it is as real as it is. That doesn't necessarily mean that that's the person with whom you should spend your life. But the emotions associated with love, they're real. And this is a great exploration of that because you're going to see young Dawson and Amanda and then 20-years-later Dawson and Amanda. They basically fall in love twice. It's different. There's more maturity in the second version versus this more young intensity. But, the feelings are the same, because [they] always [are]."

Don't miss out when The Best of Me hit theaters on October 17th, collegiettes! Big thanks to Relativity Media for flying us down for the whirlwind trip of a lifetime - next stop, the movie theater!

Best moment ever.

5 Times Kendall Jenner Proved She's a High-Fashion Model in Her Own Right

Kendall Jenner may have risen to fame on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but this 18-year-old beauty has stepped out of the shadow of her older sisters and made a name for herself on the runway. The ambitious E! star announced last month that she was dropping the "Jenner" from her name, simply going by "Kendall" for her modeling career, which has seriously taken off. Kendall's appearances in shows for designers like Marc Jacobs and Chanel are increasingly rising above the din of Kardashian-related news stories, which generally have to deal with Kim's omnipresent cleavage and Kylie's '90s-inspired lips.

Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with Kendall's rise to independent fame, and reports recently surfaced that the other models at New York Fashion Week weren't too happy to have their jobs filled by a reality TV star who they thought didn't deserve to be there. We here at HC have a different perspective on Kendall's rise to modeling fame, and have rounded up five of our favorite looks that showcase Kendall's transformation from Kardashian to top model.

1. Sexy Neutrals

Kendall wowed at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards in this Olcay Gulsen jumpsuit, pairing the halter-top-and-high-waisted-pant ensemble with silver pointy-toe pumps and a metallic clutch. She finished off the slightly futuristic look with sleek strands and a smokey eye. This model clearly knows how to dress for her body, and we couldn't help but draw comparisons between this outfit and that of another top model...

2. Off-Duty Edge

Kendall looked every inch the top model-off-duty strutting around Paris in this edgy, rocker-chic ensemble. From the leather leggings and combat boots to the cropped tee and that to-die-for Givenchy jacket, it looks like Kendall has mastered the art of effortlessly cool Parisian street style.

3. Sophisticated Stripes

Yet another Parisian look, Kendall donned this amazing striped set while out to lunch with mom Kris ahead of Paris Fashion Week. This chic ensemble is a far cry from the over-the-top bodycon outfits we're used to seeing from the Kardashian klan, and this sophisticated and tailored look was a total breath of fresh air (and a testament to Kendall's ability to put together an amazing outfit!).

4. In Vogue... Literally

As another Kardashian knows, you know you've made it once you're in Vogue. This impossibly stylish spread Kendall shot for Vogue Australia is a perfect example of why this young model is here to stay. From the Audrey Hepburn-esque backless dress and fashion-forward shoes to the stunning wide-brimmed hat and Kendall's gorgeous bone structure, everything about this shot is perfection.

5. Chic at Chanel

Kendall showed everyone she's in the same league as the world's top supermodels when she walked alongside them at the Chanel Haute Couture show during Paris Fashion Week recently. Channeling her inner punk and rocking a tweed ensemble that eerily resembled her hairstyle (in the best way), Kendall looked right at home on the catwalk.

Kendall may have grown up in the shadow of reality TV's most influential family, but this superstar has made a career and a name for herself in the modeling industry. Her high-fashion style has proved to us all that Kendall is completely deserving of her meteoric rise to fame. Collegiettes—what do you think of Kendall's model-off-duty and runway looks?

Ask a Collegiette: Dorm Room Essentials

$

Are you a smart and savvy pre-collegiette looking for answers to some of your most personal questions about college? You know, the ones about boys, classes, roommates and parties that your school’s guidance office can’t help you with? Jen is here to answer those questions! Whatever your concern, she’ll do her best to help you so you can make sure you don’t just survive college, but rock it!

What kinds of dorm essentials should I buy?–Jazzmin

Jazzmin,

There are so many dorm essentials to purchase before your first year of college starts, but thankfully, a lot of your appliances and home décor items will last you all four years. However, it’s really hard to remember every little thing you need to pack when you’re already stressing about all of your new adjustments! Luckily, Her Campus has made it easy to prepare for packing for college with our handy Ultimate College Packing List, which includes a giant list of essentials you should bring to college (broken up by category) so you don’t forget to pack anything important!

The following items aren’t absolutely essential, but they’re great to have to make your place feel more like home and allow you to organize your space effectively. Here are a few items I’d make sure you put on your list:

1. Bed risers

If your bed isn’t bunked, use a set of bed risers to prop up your bed frame. In doing so, you’ll create an incredible amount of extra under-bed storage space, which will prove to be helpful due to the small size of your new abode. The more space to stash your things, the better!

2. Wall decorations

Nothing makes a dorm room feel more like home than having decorated walls. Hanging up photographs of your best friends and your family will prevent homesickness and will give you something to talk about when you have friends over. In addition, picking out posters of your favorite actors, movies or causes to hang up will help show your new friends your interests and passions. Maybe you’ll find someone to watch Game of Thrones with!

3. White Christmas lights

A college staple, white Christmas lights are simple, yet inviting and comfortable. These lights work well for movie nights with friends or when you want to read or study, since the harsh lighting from standard dorm-room lights is often way too strong.

4. Microwavable macaroni and cheese and on-the-go snacks

For the nights when you have so many assignments that you can’t even think about leaving your dorm to eat at the dining hall, having a couple cups of macaroni and cheese will be clutch. Some extra little snacks are helpful as well to take with you when you’re on your way to class.

5. Paper towels

Paper towels are great to have on hand when sharing snacks with friends, cleaning your room and painting your nails.

6. Bedrest pillow

A cozy bedrest pillow is a trusted companion for when you want to curl up in your bed to read a magazine without sinking into your mattress. There are so many designs and colors on the market, so you’ll be able to find one that matches your room and personality perfectly. Check out Target or Bed Bath & Beyond for some cute and affordable pillows.

7. Shower caddy

A shower caddy allows you to easily transport all of your necessary toiletries from your room to the bathroom without dropping or losing any of your belongings.

It’s normal to forget to bring an essential or two, especially if you’ve never lived in a dorm before. Even though this is true, don’t worry about it, since you can pick up anything else you realize you need at a Target, Walmart or drugstore near your school. If worse comes to worse, you can also have your parents mail you some necessities in a care package.

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you find you haven’t packed every little thing, since you’ll learn along the way what you truly need and what you don’t need! Then, every year of packing for college gets easier because you begin to pack less and less once you know what your needs are.

20 Dogs In Halloween Costumes

Thinking of creative costumes every year for an entire Halloween weekend is hard enough, but some pet owners manage to impress us with their original costumes for their lovable best friends as well. We all know how hard it is to stand out in a sea of costumes. It takes time and preparation. If you’ve ever managed to whip up an original costume the day before Halloween, we praise you.

Somehow, these dog owners found the time to extend their creativity and use it to not necessarily help them be remembered, but to help their dogs be remembered. These pups managed to catch our attention in everything from adorable superhero outfits to utterly confused identities.

Now this is one race all collegiettes should want to watch: Doggy Phelps vs. Michael Phelps.

9 Pink Beauty Products to Rock This Month

$

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Whether or not you know someone personally who has been affected by breast cancer, it is estimated that one in eight women in the United States will be develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. We here at Her Campus want to do all we can to support the fight against breast cancer, so we're encouraging collegiettes everywhere to rock their favorite pink beauty products throughout the month of October to rally support for the cause. Doing good while looking good? Sounds like a win-win to us!

1. Nail Polish

The classic sophisticated pinky-nude, Essie Nail Polish in Fiji ($8.50 at CVS) works for literally any skin tone and is a chic way to transition from summer brights into fall neutrals while still keeping things feminine—and professional for that internship. Keep your nails shorter and more rounded for added trendiness (and for greater ease when typing essays!).

2. Lipstick

The cult favorite MAC Lipstick in Candy Yum-Yum ($16 at MAC Cosmetics) is a shocking cool-toned pink that really makes a statement. The matte finish looks retro and crazy-cool, or try adding a gloss to tone it down and make this color a bit more wearable for an everyday look. To keep the hue from getting clown-ish, use a lip liner to outline your lips and use a lip brush when applying to keep the lines crisp and precise.

3. Primer

This silky smooth Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer ($10.26 at Rite Aid) has a slight pink tinge to it, helping to even out any discoloration in your skin and add a subtle radiance. Apply a thin layer of this primer underneath your foundation or tinted moisturizer for a smooth and even canvas.

4. Makeup Sponge

Every YouTube beauty guru's best friend, the beautyblender ($19.95 at Sephora) may just look like a pink sponge, but it's so much more than that. When you wet the beautyblender, it expands in size, so dampen it slightly and use the sponge to push your foundation or tinted moisturizer into your skin for a natural look. Pro tip: Use the pointed corner of the sponge to apply concealer in hard-to-reach areas, like the inner corner of your eye!

5. Eye Shadow

The perfect pinky-red shade for fall, MAC Eye Shadow in Cranberry ($16 at MAC Cosmetics) is super on-trend for October, and surprisingly easy to pull off. Sweep this shade across your entire eyelid and run it under your lower lashline for a smokey berry look. Add a smudgy brown liner on your upper lashline and finish off the look with a few coats of dramatic mascara for a wearable autumnal smokey eye.

6. Lip Tar

If Candy Yum-Yum is a little too out there for you, try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Matte Lip Tar in Ophelia ($18 at Sephora) for a more subtle, bubblegum pink lip. A tiny bit of this product goes a long way, so simply dab a bit on the center of your lips and blend outwards for a soft and girly look, no lip liner needed!

7. Highlighter

While matte skin is in for fall, it's always nice to add a bit of shimmer on the tops of the cheekbones for a subtle glow. Benefit Cosmetics High Beam ($26 at Sephora) adds the perfect amount of a soft pink sheen without looking too frosty. Use the applicator to apply this product on the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and on your Cupid's bow to highlight your face in all the right places.

8. Makeup Brush

Finally available in the States, this Real Techniques Stippling Brush ($9.99 at Ulta) is revolutionary. Designed by British YouTube guru Samantha Chapman, this stippling brush is ideal for buffing in foundation to create a flawless finish. Dab your foundation or tinted moisturizer onto your skin and use this brush to stipple the product in, using small circular motions. We promise you'll be hooked!

9. Blush

Beauty bloggers have been raving about the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Dollface ($26 at Sephora) for years, and with good reason. This babydoll pink blush is not only super long-lasting but it also gives such a natural, healthy glow to the skin. Even if you plan on spending this October huddled in the library, this blush will you give you that just-back-from-apple-picking flush!

While the fight against breast cancer is obviously not limited to just the month of October, breaking out your favorite pink products is an easy way to remind yourself and others of a disease that affects almost everyone on this planet in one way or another. Think pink this October, collegiettes, and inspire others to do the same!

The 5 Most Common Makeup Mistakes (& How to Fix Them)

$
0
0

From drawing a fierce pair of cat eyes to applying dark eye shadow without making yourself look like a panda, applying makeup well is a pretty hard skill to master. With so many different kinds of makeup and ways to apply it, it can be a bit of a doozy trying to understand what products we’re putting on our faces and how to apply them correctly. HC has you covered with a few tips to help you avoid making these common mistakes.

1. Wearing the wrong foundation

It’s happened to the best of us. You take a few pictures of yourself (with the flash on) during your girls’ night out and look back at them only to find that your face looks a few shades lighter than your neck and your scalp (or a few shades closer to Snooki status than you had in mind). That could mean you’re using the wrong shade of foundation.

When buying foundation, try testing out two colors that are close to your skin tone on your jawline, and see which one disappears more. Or, you could go to any beauty store (such as Sephora) and ask the store clerks to try some shades out on you. Whatever the case, your foundation should appear natural.

2. Wearing too much foundation

As the base of your makeup, foundation can make or break your entire look. The problem, however, is that sometimes we tend to get a little heavy-handed and go overboard, which can cause our skin to look cakey and fake. Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone, so it should be used in moderation, or only when it’s actually needed.

If you tend to get a little too foundation-happy, find a simpler alternative. “For some people, it’s best to go foundation free!” says aesthetician Alicia Hunter. “Foundation can clog pores and highlight imperfections instead of covering them. Go instead with a tinted moisturizer.”

If you want to wear some makeup but don’t want to go too heavy with foundation, try using Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream ($8.99 at Ulta).

3. Over-drawing your eyebrows

We can all agree the full-eyebrow trend is hot right now. But it seems like every girl is on some sort of quest for perfect brows, and a good amount of them are falling victim to overdone, painted on, harsh-looking eyebrows.

If you’re going to fill in your eyebrows with a pencil, use an actual eyebrow pencil (eyebrow pencils don’t smudge as much as eyeliner pencils). Make sure the color of your pencil is just few shades lighter than the color of your brows, since the goal is to subtly enhance the brows, not draw on new ones!

4. Using dirty brushes

Did you know that you’re actually supposed to wash your makeup brushes and tools regularly? It depends on how often you actually wear makeup, but ideally, you should be washing your brushes at least once a week in order for your makeup to continue to look fresh. Dirt and oils can get trapped in the bristles of your brushes, resulting in dirt and oil being transferred to your face and clogging your pores—even causing breakouts.

Cleaning your brushes is actually pretty easy: All you have to do is to swipe your brushes around in a mixture of olive oil (to keep the brushes moisturized) and any brand of dish soap. YouTube makeup guru Michelle Phan even has a tutorial posted on her channel demonstrating the whole process. Check it out here if you’re more of a visual learner.

5. Wearing the wrong nude lip color

The actual meaning of “nude” is relative to the person wearing the shade. Some women, specifically those with darker skin tones, tend to wear nude lipsticks that don’t match their complexions. If your lips are several shades lighter than your face, your lips will look dry and your entire look will be a little clown-like.

If you want to a nude lipstick, find a color that matches your complexion to the point where it looks like you’re not even wearing any lipstick.

If we’re going to be looking our best, it’s important for us to know how to apply makeup the right way. As long as you remember these tips, applying makeup will be a breeze!

'Girl Code': College Dos & Don'ts From Carly Aquilino

It seems Gretchen Wieners wasn’t too far off when she mentioned that there were “Rules of Feminism.” MTV’s Girl Code is filled with honest explanations, embarrassing stories and hilarious (yet practical) advice tto which we all can relate. The show has helped kickstart the careers of some extremely funny ladies, especially Carly Aquilino. The 23-year-old comedian is known for her vibrant hair and New York accent, but it’s her relevant humor and sarcastic wit that makes fans feel like she’s their BFF. We asked Carly for her insight on college life, girl code style.

Did you always know you wanted to be a comedian, or did you have another career plan originally?

CA: I always I wanted to be a comedian, I always thought it was a really cool job but I didn’t know how to get involved with it. The hardest part was getting out there and trying it out for the first time, but once I did that I realized how much I really loved it. It took me years and years to actually build up the nerve to get on stage for the first time.

How did you get on Girl Code?

CA: I was doing stand-up one day at a club in New York City, and the creator of the show was in the crowd, and I got picked up. I had an audition and tested twice so I could get the vibes from everybody and they could get the vibes from me.

What is your favorite thing about being on the show?

CA: I think my favorite thing is that the show is not scripted, and we can say whatever we want without being afraid that we are going to offend someone. It’s really just giving our own opinion.

What I love about Girl Code is how relatable and honest it is. Fans of the show seem to look at the cast as if they were actually friends with you guys. Do you think that’s what makes the show so successful and likeable?

CA: People can really connect with us, and they feel like we are their friends. We go out and are like, look this stuff happens to all of us, and it happens to the people that you think it doesn’t happen to. There are no rules on what we can and can’t say, and I think that’s what makes the show what it is.

In season one you listed some important questions to ask a potential roommate, including, “Do you drink?” “Do you do drugs?” “Do you share?” and most importantly, “Are you a serial killer?” Do you have any more advice on qualities you would want in a college roommate?

CA: It’s important that your roommate doesn’t eat your food and steal your clothes. I think a big thing for college roommates is when a girl brings creepy guys over. I think that it is so common and so wrong because you could be putting your roommate and yourself in danger.

In a dorm setting, what are your thoughts about sexiling your roommate? Should your roommate be allowed to have her significant other over all the time?

CA: Your roommate should definitely be able to have someone over, as long as it isn’t every night. You should make up some kind of rule. That way you’re not being kept up at night or kicked out of the room. You should have a schedule. I once lived with this guy and his girlfriend was there every single day, and I remember thinking, "This is not right." I know it happens to so many people. Unfortunately that’s the stuff you have to deal with when you’re living with somebody.

Do you think it’s a good idea to room with your best friend?

CA: I feel like it could mess up your friendship, because you may know someone and really like someone but you don’t know if you can actually live with [him or her]. Living with someone is a huge deal, and it’s a big big commitment, so if you’re living with your best friend and you piss each other off, not only will you not be roommates anymore, but also maybe not friends. You can mend that relationship, but now you’ll know you can’t live together.

College is a time where a lot of people might experiment with alcohol for the first time. Do you have any tips for first-timers to avoid being “sloppy” or “that girl” at the party and stay safe?

CA: I think if you're going out and you’re drinking and having fun, there is nothing wrong with it, but make sure you are with a group of friends who are going to look out for you and not let anything bad happen to you. Have fun, but know your limit. I think some people don’t always know their limit, and it may take a while to learn it, but ease into it. Maybe have a drink then wait an hour and spread it out.

Do you think it’s beneficial to be single when you start off college?

CA: I don’t think I would get out of a relationship just to go away to college, but I would not be surprised if it didn’t work out. Not to say a guy would break up with you if you go away to college; in fact, you might want to break up with him. You might meet new people and be really busy. I don’t think there is a wrong or right time to be in a relationship, it just goes by the couple. Some people can do it and some people can’t.

It can be hard if your significant other goes to school farther away. Any advice on how to keep a long-term relationship going?

CA: Stay loyal, don’t lie and make the time to talk to each other. Have FaceTime dates or talk on the phone for an hour and just make the time for one another so that way you both feel appreciated.

What can fans look forward to in the upcoming season of Girl Code?

CA: We have a lot of great sketches, and we get some really great topics. I would just tell you guys to keep a look out because it’s a great season; it’s been my favorite season so far but I think the sketches are the best this season.

Tune in to watch Carly and the rest of the cast on the season 3 premiere of Girl Code Wednesday October 1st at 11pm/10c on MTV!

What Halloween is Like in College

$
0
0

There are few holidays a collegiette loves more than Halloween.

You may be too old for the days of trick-or-treating,

but the new treat has become deciding what you’re going to dress up as each year.

Once October rolls around, you start brainstorming ideas for your costumes.

Halloween used to last for just one night,

but in college, Halloween becomes a weekend-long event, which means several different costumes.

You and your friends might plan some group costume you can all dress up as together…

…or you might find it easier to just come up with some solo costumes.

At first you have trouble coming up with ideas…

…but once you decide on that perfect costume, you become determined to not tell anyone about it until October 31st.

When you first start college, you’re all about making your look as sexy as possible,

even if your outfit is barely an excuse for a costume.

Other people may judge you…

…but you won’t let it faze you.

However, as you grow older, you may start to see the appeal of a more conservative approach.

Maybe you’ll decide you want to have a really clever costume,

or perhaps you’ll decide this year that you don’t even care if your costume makes you look good or not.

As the big weekend approaches, you start making your party plans.

That first night, you pull out all the stops to make sure your costume is flawless.

The only things that could possibly put a damper on your night are having someone not understand your costume…

…and seeing other girls who have the same costume as you.

You may lose half your accessories, but all in all, the first night goes off without a hitch.

As the weekend continues, you get progressively lazier with your costumes…

…and by the end of the weekend, it’s a miracle that you make it out at all.

But somehow you survive Halloweekend!

And then it’s time to start planning your costumes for next year.

5 Ways to Tell if Your Guy is Lying

$
0
0

Whether he’s stringing you along, trying to avoid drama or keeping you in the dark about the other girl he’s seeing, guys lie all the time. We can spend the better part of a day trying to determine if he really was studying last night, like he said he was.

We all know the signs that tell us someone’s lying: he looks to the left, he ruffles his hair, he stutters a lot or he shows other signs of nervousness.  Unfortunately, these are popular misconceptions and may not always mean that your guy is lying. Catching someone in a lie is much more difficult and requires a lot more than being able to tell whether or not his eye just twitched.

But fear not, collegiettes! We spoke with relationship experts and discovered a few strategies to help you tell if he’s being less than truthful.

1. Establish his “baseline”

In the heat of the moment, we may be very focused on figuring out, “Is this guy lying to me?” But before we can determine that, we have to know how he usually responds.

Human behavior and relationship expert Patrick Wanis suggests establishing your guy’s “baseline.” This is how he usually responds in any given setting. When you’re in a relationship with a guy, it’s pretty easy to determine his baseline. You spend a lot of time with him, so you already know how he normally reacts to most situations.

If you need help establishing a guy’s baseline, ask him a few simple questions, and then pay close attention to how he answers. “Listen to the way he responds,” Wanis says. “Listen to his tone of voice. Listen to the pacing in between words – how long does he pause? The questions may have no real significance in terms of the rest of the conversation, but they are important in that you wouldn’t expect him to lie about these things.”

Start with casual questions, like how his classes were that day or what he had for breakfast. This way, when you ask what you really want to know (“Were you with Sally last night?”), you can compare his reaction to his baseline. Did his tone of voice completely shift? Were there any signs of nervousness? Was he extraordinarily adamant when he answered? If so, there’s a good chance he’s lying.

2. Assess his body language

While refusing to make eye contact might not be a dead giveaway that your guy is lying, there are a few signs that should raise your suspicion.

Wanis offers a few examples: “Let’s say that a guy says something untruthful and then straight away rubs his nose. That can mean that he’s lying. Or a guy can say something, but he’s half-covering his mouth with his hand. Why? He’s either withholding something he really wants to tell you, or he’s telling you a half-truth. He doesn’t want all the words to come out. It’s a symbolic gesture. Touching the nose can mean, ‘Even I’m disgusted with what I just said.’”

Be on the lookout for any other behaviors that are unusual or unnatural for your guy, such as fidgeting, running his hands through his hair, tapping his fingers or kicking his legs about. These actions can mean that he’s agitated and wants to get away.

However, keep your guy’s baseline in mind: If he has a habit of rubbing his nose all the time or is a fidgety person by nature, then those things may not be signs of lying for him. Even signs of agitation may not automatically prove that he’s lying.

“Is the agitation because he’s being questioned, or because he’s done something wrong?” Wanis says. “You have to decide that.”

3. Check his story for consistency

You’ve asked your guy why he couldn’t see you last night, and he recounts a list of events explaining why he couldn’t meet up. A quick way to check if he’s lying? Get him to repeat the story, but backwards.

“Some people who are skilled liars will practice or rehearse their lies, but they don’t remember them back to front,” Wanis explains. “The reason it’s hard to establish proper chronology is because it’s not real. If I were to say to you, ‘Tell me now in reverse order what you did today going back to 7 o’clock this morning,’ your mind knows how to do this because it has a timeline. But if you’re trying to make up something, it’s harder because you have to think backwards. That ‘timeline’ doesn’t exist, so you actually have to create more lies, not just one.”

So, what were you doing last night? You stayed home? What time did you go to bed, then? What did you do before that? Ask him to replay his story, from back to front. If he slips up, he’s probably lying.

4. Watch out for defensive/evasive behavior

If your guy is doing anything he can to steer the topic of the conversation away from himself, there’s a good chance that he’s hiding something.

Carole Lieberman, M.D., Beverly Hills psychiatrist and author of Bad Boys: Why We Love Them, How to Live with Them, and When to Leave Them, says that elusive behavior is a glaring sign. “Seriously, if he isn’t looking you in the eye, or if he is trying to kiss you so you can’t keep asking him questions, these are frequently red flags,” she says.

Wanis also suggests being aware if your guy starts to get defensive or turns the situation onto you. At the extreme, he may make statements such as, “You’re being stupid and paranoid,” or, “Why would you say this? You don’t trust me.” Guys who are telling the truth will have no reason to get defensive.

However, be careful of making very harsh accusations against your guy. His defensiveness can simply be a reaction to being accused, especially if he feels he’s about to lose something valuable to him – you.

5. Trust your gut

We’ve all heard about “women’s intuition,” and catching your guy in a lie is one situation when it’s a good idea to listen to your gut.

As a relationship expert, Wanis has worked with hundreds of women, many of whom were victims of cheating. When asked how they knew, several women said they simply had a feeling, only to find out months later that it was true. “If your gut feeling tells you he’s cheated, even if the evidence tells you otherwise, then I guarantee you he has cheated,” Wanis says.

While talking to your guy, listen for the intent behind his message. Does everything seem to add up? Does something strike you as odd or make you uneasy, even if you can’t articulate why? If anything feels just a little bit off, pay attention.

So, what now?

So, your guy has admitted to lying to you – now what?

The first thing you should do is to remain calm; getting upset will only complicate things further. “Don’t react with anger, nagging or pouting when he does tell you the truth,” Lieberman says. “This will discourage him from being truthful in the future.”

Instead, thank him for being honest with you. Talk with him to see why he felt the need to lie, and determine what the two of you can do to prevent it from happening again. “Ask him why he thinks he has to lie to you instead of just telling you the truth,” Lieberman says. “What is he afraid will happen? Tell him that you would much rather know the truth, even if he thinks it will make you sad or angry.”

However, if you’ve tried being honest with your partner and he’s not reciprocating, it may be time to end the relationship. “If your guy lies often – and you have tried to get to the bottom of it and nothing helps – then get out!” Lieberman says. “If he has this little respect for you, the relationship is going nowhere.” If your guy isn’t going to take your feelings into account, then you’re wasting your time.

The 7 Struggles of Being a Sarcastic Person

$

0

You have the best poker face in the world. You often say things you don’t mean to be taken literally, and people just figure out what you really mean half the time. So you’re a sassy, sarcastic betch. That’s your style; it’s what you do. But the rest of the world doesn’t seem to understand the struggles you go through as a naturally sarcastic person.

1. Whenever you’re just trying to be funny, basically no one gets it.

Sarcastic jokes are an acquired taste. And somehow, no one else seems to get that. It’s a joke, people! Can’t they tell you’re kidding? Every time you try to be funny, everyone just stares back at you, wondering how to interpret the situation. Cue the crickets.

2. Sometimes you genuinely cannot help it.

You didn’t ask to be naturally sarcastic; like Lady Gaga said, you were born this way *hey.* There are some moments when you wish you could maybe lay off the sarcasm a little bit, but it is ingrained in you, and you can’t stop won’t stop.

3. People who don’t know you assume you’re a b*tch.

You can come off as a little rude at times, and you’re aware of it. But once people get to know you, they realize it’s just part of your charm. They learn to love your rugged edges. You’re seriously tired of hearing how “intimidating” you were when people first met you. Underneath your sarcastic facade is a heart of gold. Why can’t they understand?

4. You have little patience for people who don’t understand sarcasm.

Seriously, have these people never heard of sarcasm before? It can be downright frustrating constantly having to explain yourself. Sure, sometimes your sarcasm is a little more discreet than others, but when you're laying it on super thick and people still stare at you like you have a third head, you just want to stare right back. It's called sar-cas-m.

5. No one trusts what you say.

The rare moments when you actually try to be serious get lost in confusion because no one knows whether you’re being sarcastic or not. Literally everything you say is questioned. Your friends just stare at you with a raised eyebrow as you try to explain that yes, it is in fact raining outside, and you weren’t just kidding.

6. You’re basically the worst at receiving compliments.

Just like no one trusts you, you're sometimes wary of trusting others. Sarcasm is a hard language to understand, and even though you’re basically fluent in it, the occasional unexpected compliment will throw you off. Does your hair actually look nice, or was that a blatant dig at the fact that you haven’t showered today?

7. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

It is what it is, and if people can’t deal, then that’s their problem. You’ve accepted the fact that your sarcasm is a part of who you are. So maybe the rest of the world may never fully understand. That just makes you a beautiful, unique creature. If being sarcastic is wrong, we don’t want to be right!

Are you the biggest goofball in your group of friends, and want to find an outfit that will show that off? For all those funny girls out there, consider dressing as a pun this Halloween. Yes, that's right - a pun. These costumes might need a little bit of an explanation, but they're guaranteed to produce some chuckles.

There are endless puns in the world, but we've put together a few clever ideas that also make cute costumes! Punny costumes are also great for those of us who tend to be little last-minute in our planning. Most of them can be made from materials you'll find around the house, even if they do require a little bit of crafting to get the costume just right. We'll list all the easy ones first, and then we'll list some more intricate punny costumes for those of us who aren't afraid of a challenge!

Queen of Hearts

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Tiara, craft supplies

How-to: Wear whatever outfit you want, but make it fairly neutral. Then, cut out tons of hearts in a variety of colors and put them all over your outfit. Finish off the look with a tiara or plastic crown and you're done!

Anchorwoman

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Business casual dress, craft supplies, microphone

How-to: Dress in your favorite business casual outfit (bonus points for adorable pencil skirts!), and tape a large cutout anchor to your back. That's it - you're an anchorwoman! Feel free to carry around a microphone to complete the outfit.

Facebook

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Facepaint

How-to: This is one of the easiest costumes out there, so it's perfect for people who know they won't have much time to get ready. Simply paint the word "BOOK" across your face and you're done. Just like that, you've become the website that you spend hours on every day!

Headquarters

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Quarters, headband, hot glue gun

How-to: Although it requires a little bit of crafting, gluing a few quarters onto a headband shouldn't take too long. This is an easy outfit that requires just enough prep so that the glue has time to dry. This outfit is perfect for people who don't love dressing up, and just need to be able to point to their head to prove that they did put a little effort in.

Mixed Greens

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Green clothing, craft supplies

How-to: Dig out all the green clothing in your closet, and don't worry about whether or not it matches! Put it all on, in layers, with mismatched socks and accessories. This one is super easy because if you have enough in your wardrobe you don't even have to make any purchases. By the time you're done, you'll look like your favorite salad! Feel free to add some construction paper cutouts of tomatoes and carrots to complete the veggie-friendly look.

Tic Tac Toes

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Tic Tacs, hot glue, flats

How-to: Get some cheap flats that you don't mind ruining, and hot glue your favorite flavor of Tic Tacs onto them. This is another super easy outfit, and pun enthusiasts can even pair it with something else, like the idea up above for Headquarters!

Well Red

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Red clothing, books

How-to: Dress in an all-red outfit, and carry around your favorite novel - but the more pretentious the title sounds, the better! This one gives you a ton of flexibility, because you can make it as elaborate as you want. Use a permanent marker to write your favorite quotes all over a red t-shirt, or just go crazy with red lipstick and glitter.

Photographic Memory

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Disposable cameras, hat, hot glue gun

How-to: This one requires a little bit of prep, but it shouldn't be too hard to execute. The basic idea is to hot glue a bunch of disposable cameras onto a hat. This one can be really fun later for capturing memories, as you can get some funky bird’s eye photos by taking photos with your hat throughout the night!

Cereal Killer

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Box of cereal, spoon, pajamas

How-to: Dress in your favorite pajamas and pop open your cereal box. Tear off the top third of the box in a jagged line, making it look like an animal tried to rip it open. Carry around the box and the spoon together all night. To really get into the spooky Halloween spirit, carry a fake weapon with this outfit (you are a cereal killer, after all!). Extra points for messy hair that makes it look like you woke up and just couldn't wait to get some breakfast!

Peas Corp Member

Difficulty Level: Difficult

Materials: Peas, craft supplies

How-to: Feel like spreading some peace this Halloween? Become a member of the Peas Corp! Dress in whatever outfit you want, but spend some time making signs with cute sayings on them, like "Love and Peas for Everyone!" March around with your signs all night, and if you want to get really into it, walk around handing out peas as if they were Halloween candy!

Ceiling Fan

Difficulty Level: Difficult

Materials: Craft supplies, pom poms, megaphone, face paint

How-to: Pretend you are the absolute number one fan for your favorite team - the Ceilings! Dress as a cheerleader, and spend some time decorating signs and t-shirts that show off your ceiling pride. This costume lets you get really creative, as you can make up chants, team statistics, or anything else you need to complete the outfit. This is really easy to turn into a group activity, too, as you and your friends can dress as an ultimate ceiling fan group. Talk your guy friends into going shirtless and painting "CEILINGS" on their chests!

What's In My Shower Caddy: Beauty Blogger Rachel

When I was preparing for college last summer, I had no idea how I was going to fit everything in my mom’s minivan, let alone all my products in a shower caddy. However, after a year of college and coming back again this year, I’ve learned that all a shower caddy really needs to be stocked with are the basics—I leave my hair products and makeup in my room. I’ll show you how to keep it simple and effective with my seven shower essentials.

Shampoo

Shampoo is a key shower essential. I love Organix Rejuvenating Cherry Blossom Ginseng Shampoo ($7.99 at Target) because not only is it all-natural, but it also hydrates my curly hair. Organix has a ton of different shampoos and conditioners to choose from, so I like to switch it up every couple of weeks.

Body Wash (and pouf)

I like using body wash more than soap because of its smooth texture and scent variety. Dove Go Fresh Nutrium Moisture Body Wash ($5.47 at Walmart) has a ton of scents and a great moisturizing formula. I like the Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena scent. Rather than using my hands or a washcloth, I like using poufs because they provide exfoliation, an easy lather, and accessibility in the shower (they also dry faster!).

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream is a must-have to provide moisture and avoid knicks (ouch!). I love Skintimate Moisturizing Shave Gel in Raspberry Rain ($2.97 at Walmart). Its smooth formula and yummy scents are perfect for an easy and quick shave.

Razor

A good razor is also vital in ensuring a problem-free shave. I like using disposable razors because as soon as they start to get dull, you just toss them and grab a new one—so easy! I’ve found that BIC Simply Soleil Razors ($7.99 on drugstore.com) provide a close shave and last longer than most other razors do. Pick them up at any local pharmacy or drug store.

Conditioner

Conditioner could very well be my most important shower product. With curly hair, you need a thick, moisturizing conditioner that will untangle your hair while smoothing it out. For this reason I use Organix Rejuvenating Cherry Blossom Ginseng Conditioner ($7.99 at Target).  As I said earlier, I love Organix’s natural formula and scent variety. I'm not steering you wrong with this product!

Face Wash

Face wash is an important shower essential that you just can't glaze over. Water alone is not enough to clean the dirt and bacteria that gathers on your face throughout the day, which is why I usually choose to wash my face in the shower. I love Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser ($6.45 at Target) because it cleans my face while preventing breakouts at the same time (two-in-ones are the best!). Its gentle formula clears your pores while still preventing acne and providing moisture; what could be better?

Toothbrush and Toothpaste

I keep my toothbrush and toothpaste in my shower caddy so I can easily access them in the morning or before going out. I like a gentle, manual toothbrush and whitening toothpaste for clean, healthy teeth. Get brushing, collegiettes!

These products fit right into my Vera Bradley Shower Caddy ($35 on verabradley.com), which is cute and easy to carry. Showering has never been so stylish! With these seven essentials and an adorable bag, you’ll be set for whatever dorm showers try to throw your way...just don’t forget your flip-flops!
