So it’s past midnight and you’re trying (with all your might) to absorb a chapter’s worth of information from a textbook that weighs as much as a baby, but you find yourself getting absolutely nowhere. Multiple glances at a single page leave you questioning what you just read and all you want to do is cry. The good news is: we’ve all been there (on more occasions than we’d like to admit)! On top of that, there’s even more good news—you won’t have to experience it ever again! Why? Well, we now have a solution to your reading woes: McGraw-Hill Education’s SmartBook.

This innovative product, which is the first and only of its kind, will revolutionize how you read and learn by providing an adaptive experience that caters to your individual needs. Say so long to unbearable nights when you want to pull your hair out and awkward classroom moments when you feel unprepared. SmartBook offers e-books for over 90 course areas that will specifically pinpoint which content you need to review and help you retain the material once you’re done reading. Studies have shown that students who use the technology have improved their performance by at least one letter grade! Bye, bye, boring old textbooks (we won’t miss you at all).

The SmartBook experience follows a four-step process. First, you preview each chapter to get a general sense of the material framework. Then as you move onto the Read step, the software will highlight objectives and topics you should focus on. In the Practice step, you answer questions about what you just read. Based on your results, SmartBook gauges which content you need to review and concentrate most on (like that paragraph you read 10 times before understanding!). The Recharge step involves bringing back material you might soon forget, in order to ensure retention.

With SmartBook, you can change a life, literally (and we’re not just talking about you and your own grades). For every SmartBook purchased by December 31st of this year, McGraw-Hill Education will donate a textbook to children in need around the world as part of the company’s Read It Forward program. So not only will you improve your own education, but you will also improve that of others! It’s a win-win.

McGraw-Hill knows collegiettes are operating on budgets, so they’re offering you 15 percent off SmartBook with the promo code FORWARD14 through October 31, 2014! Snag yours at a discount, and change a life when you do!

It’s still early on in the semester, so take advantage and spread the impact of education by getting SmartBook – your GPA will thank you for it!

How She Got There: Danielle Hausberg, Creator of CollegeCookin

Name: Danielle Hausberg
Age: 21
Job Title and Description: Creator of CollegeCookin
College/Major: University of Western Ontario (Canada)/Sociology
Website: www.college-cookin.com
Instagram Handle:@collegecookin

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Danielle Hausberg: This question is funny to me because the answer is simple: I cook for myself and photograph the meals I create.  For the most part, a typical day for me includes cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner, taking pictures of those meals, and posting them to Instagram. While doing this, I am also answering emails and working with clients if I have a product campaign taking place during that time.

I am also in charge of maintaining and keeping up my website, using my other social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest) and also doing the occasional blog post on my website. When I was writing and making recipes for my eBook, that took up the majority of my time. I am full-time student, so this is all taking place around my class schedule.

What is the best part of your job?

DH: The best part about my job is that it allows me to be creative. I am always thinking of new recipes to make or a new project to explore. Creating my eBook was an amazing project that allowed me to learn so much about writing, graphic design and business. Thinking of new ideas and new directions for CollegeCookin to go in only expands the Instagram and attracts new people to the site.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

DH: Because I started the Instagram on my own, my job title has stayed the same from the beginning to the present. I started the account after being convinced by my friend to start uploading pictures of my meals to an Instagram account.

The idea of CollegeCookin unfolded, with the hope of inspiring students to cook and eat healthy on their college budgets. I had no idea that it would ever take off and gain any following. I remember when I had 100 followers I was in shock, now I have over 350,000!

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

DH: I never realized how loyal I would become to my followers. When I first started my page, I was sort of posting for myself. If there were something I liked, it would automatically be up on my site. Now, while I still only post things that I approve of, I am really posting for my followers. I might like a dish a lot, but if I know my followers wouldn’t like it, it won’t go up on my page. I am always taking them into consideration, because the Instagram is for them.

So, what I wish I knew was how much my Instagram account was going to evolve. While it started as a hobby of mine to post food pictures, it has transformed into a business and now I sort of feel like my followers are my clients and I am working for them in a positive and fun way.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

DH: My parents—I can’t pick just one. My parents are not only fans, but have really guided me in the business direction. I was naïve and never really realized that I could someday make money and start a business from what was just a silly hobby when it first began. They called me when I was away at school, constantly giving me advice and telling me new ideas and things to consider. I always ask them their opinion on new business ventures I take because they are the ones that really told me I could do them in the first place.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

DH: My dad once told me that my Instagram account was “the Wild West” and I didn’t really know what that meant. What he explained to me was that there wasn’t necessarily a wrong or right direction this Instagram page could go, so there isn’t a laid out path directing me from step to step.

I found this extremely valuable because it taught me that every decision I make and direction I decide to take is going to lead somewhere new and I will only learn from each experience I have, whether it is a positive or negative one. This advice has allowed me to continue to be creative and explore new ideas because it made me realize that I shouldn’t and don’t have any barriers from stopping me from doing what I want to do.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

DH: When my Instagram hit over 200,000 followers, I started to get a lot of emails from different brands asking me to promote their product. This concept was so new to me so I would really say yes to pretty much all of their requests.

Because I was so excited to finally start making money, at times I lost site of what my account was about. I realized that instead of wanting to make money, I had to be true and honest with my followers and only promote products that I thought would actually benefit them and would remain in line with my message of cooking healthy foods on a budget.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

DH: Finishing my book. It was amazing to watch something I worked so hard on come to life. When I completed it and saw it finished with all of the graphics, I was so happy with the way that it turned out that I didn’t even care if it was purchased or not. I was just happy that I finished something I wanted to finish, which was an accomplishment in itself. I couldn’t believe that somehow I became an author of a book!

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

DH: When hiring someone I look for someone that is creative and is not afraid to share his or her ideas. CollegeCookin is a project that will change along the way, so I try to find people that will come up with new ideas and aren’t afraid to voice them. More importantly though, I always will hire someone whom I find is reliable, responsible and holds himself or herself accountable.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

DH: If you have an idea, go for it! I never would have thought that what appeared to be a silly idea and fun hobby would turn into a successful Instagram, let alone a business. Instead of thinking about all the reasons not to do something, think about all the incentives to do something. You really never know what could come out of an idea until you implement it.

California Now Requires Students on Campus to Mutually Consent Before Sex

California is now the first state to require college students on campus to receive active consent before they can engage in any sexual activity. Governor Jerry Brown announced Sunday night that he signed the affirmative consent bill that defines when "yes means yes" and adopts requirements for colleges to follow when investigating sexual assault reports.

Rather than using definitions of nonconsent such as “no means no,” the bill chooses to define active consent, which is described as “an affirmative, unambiguous and conscious decision” by each party to engage in sexual activity. The law applies to all colleges and universitites accepting state financial aid.

Consent

The passing of the bill comes in light of increasing pressure from students and universitites nationwide who want better ways of handling sexual assault allegations.

The bill, known as SB 967, makes it clear that silence or lack of resistance does not imply mutual consent, although consent can be nonverbal, according to lawmakers. Some universities have outlined examples in their policies such as the nod of a head or moving in closer towards a partner. The new law also says that someone who is drunk, drugged, unconscious or asleep cannot grant consent.

The bill was pushed by Senator Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles, a Democrat. He believes that the legislation will start a "paradigm shift in how college campuses in California prevent and investigate sexual assaults,"reported the Associated Press

“With this measure, we will lead the nation in bringing standards and protocols across the board so we can create an environment that’s healthy, that’s conducive for all students,"said de Leon. "Not just for women, but for young men as well too, so young men can develop healthy patterns and boundaries as they age with the opposite sex."

Victims of sexual assault on campus and women's advocacy groups are hopeful that the bill will provide consistency in handling sexual assault cases and challenge the idea that victims need to have resisted to have valid complaints. They sent petitions to Gov. Brown's office on Sept. 16 pushing him to sign the bill.

Senator De Leon and women's advocacy group

"Every student deserves a learning environment that is safe and healthy," De Leon said in a recent statement. "The State of California will not allow schools to sweep rape cases under the rug. We've shifted the conversation regarding sexual assault to one of prevention, justice and healing."

In addition to defining consent, the new law requires trauma-informed training for faculty handling complaints so that victims are not asked inappropriate questions. The bill also requires colleges and universities to give students access to counseling, healthcare services and other resources.

Many students are excited about the new progressive legislation. "This is amazing,"said UCLA student Savannah Badalich and founder of 7000 in Solidarity, a group that educates students about consent. "It's going to educate an entire new generation of students on what consent is and what consent is not... that the absence of a 'no' is not a 'yes.'"

And yet, some critics believe the bill "is overreaching and will send universities into murky, unfamiliar legal waters," reports USA Today

Some Republicans in the Assembly also questioned whether creating statewide legislation is the right way to go about defining sexual consent. Gordon Finley, an adviser to the National Coalition for Men, wrote an editorial urging Gov. Brown not to sign the bill. He argued that"this campus rape crusade bill" denies the accused rights to due process and makes them already seem guilty.

6 Style-Savvy Ways to Stay Warm This Fall

Gearing up for colder weather has a tendency to freak people out, at least in terms of fashion. A lot of us end up thinking we have to leave our taste at the door just because we have to throw on an outer layer, but that’s so not the case! Forever 21 has come out with a killer new collection of coats to covet called The Outerwear Edit, and it will have your last year’s jackets running for the hills.

It’s fabulous for so many reasons, the first being that no item is over $65—no, that’s not a typo! You’re probably used to seeing outerwear price tags that are well into three digits, so it’s such a relief that Forever 21 has us budget-friendly and style-savvy collegiettes in mind. We’ve handpicked the cutest items from the collection that will keep you stylish and cozy at the same time!

1. Layer up

Shaggy Faux Fur Vest, $39.80

Before it gets to be full-on jacket weather, vests are by far the go-to item. Great for game day, classes and fun fall dates, they’re the best layering tool of the season and actually add a substantial amount of warmth. A faux fur vest like this Shaggy Faux Fur Vest ($39.80) does wonders! Of course it’s super soft, but more importantly, it’s so trendy! As a statement piece, it’s sure to steal the attention away from the rest of your outfit, so flaunt it while you can. This vest would go perfectly with a charcoal waffle knit sweater and a black mini skirt. Cue style swooning!

2. Experiment with texture

Faux Suede Moto Jacket, $57.80

You know how amazing your feet feel in a pair of fluffy slippers? Well, that’s how your whole body will feel in this faux suede number – except you’ll actually look cute and sophisticated while you wear it! This coat is all about the details: the belted waist, asymmetric zipper and über soft faux-fur lining... how can you possibly go wrong? Plus, the loose fit allows room for a few extra layers if it’s a really chilly day.

Trying out pieces with texture doesn’t mean automatically turning to faux fur, though, if you aren’t a fan. Try out a boucle piece like this Wool-Blend Boucle Coat ($47.80), which has an amazing oversized shape for extra warmth and chicness. In case you were wondering what boucle is, it’s a type of yarn with a curly ply, which is what gives this coat a rich quality. Plus, it’ll help you stay warm without making you look like the Abominable Snowman! This classic cut is a safe option to wear over a dress for a fancier occasion, like a fall formal or dinner out in your college town.

3. Try out different lengths

Textured Knit Coat, $44.90

As far as cold weather goes, the longer the length, the warmer you’ll likely be! With this knit coat, you can be super warm without looking like a slob, which will come in handy especially whenever you’re heading to your internship or job. Besides keeping you toasty, the coat’s length adds an extra level of sophistication.

Nonetheless, you can still get away with cropped jackets in the fall; all it takes is finding one in the right fabric! The collection’s Heathered Moto Jacket ($32.90) makes up for its lack of coverage with its soft and sweatshirt-like material. Pair it with high-waisted skinny jeans, add a beanie and you’re good to go!

4. Go mod

Double-Breasted A-Line Coat, $59.80

The mod look from the 60s is re-emerging this fall, and this double-breasted coat is a great piece you can wear to embrace the trend (and stay warm while you do it)! Seriously though, this jacket looks like it could totally have scored its own scene in Mad Men. The double-breasted front flap offers a sophisticated look that can transition you from day to night, plus it’ll keep your upper torso warm even on the windiest of fall days. All you need is a cute skirt; bold, thick-knit tights and some girly oxfords, and voilà! Instant cozy chic.

5. Embrace an edgy look

Hooded Biker Jacket, $42.80

A moto jacket is a classic item that can easily complete any fall-worthy outfit. This faux leather piece takes the typical moto jacket to a new level with the added hood; what better way to stay chic and cozy at the same time?! If you’re looking for a little extra pop of color, opt instead for the Belted Faux Leather Moto Jacket ($22.90); the bold shades and textured shoulder details make it the perfect item to balance out a girly outfit or even to throw on top of a basic top and jeans.

If you’re not quite ready to embrace an edgy look with a bold pop of color or a hood, we suggest opting for a Zippered Faux Leather Bomber ($42.90), which may be a better choice for your comfort zone. With its asymmetrical zipper and silver hardware, the bomber jacket is a safe yet edgy piece that can easily become an everyday staple! No matter what you’re wearing this fall, adding on an extra layer in the form of an on-trend jacket is sure to up your style cred and your warmth factor.

6. Opt for oversized

Shawl Collar Coat, $39.80

You’re probably used to fitted coats that taper at the waist or come with a belt to frame your waist, but once in a while it’s nice to go with the oversized look. This shawl coat makes us feel cozy just by looking at it! The loose fit gives the coat a laid-back look, yet it can still be trendy and sophisticated thanks to the draping lapels. When you’re headed to class on a chilly morning, you can throw on some booties, a wool snood and a fab oversized coat, and you’ll be ready for anything!

The Outerwear Edit collection also features an Oversized Open-Front Blazer ($32.90) that’s just boxy enough to be incredibly on-trend, but not so boxy that you feel like one of the crooks in Home Alone. It comes in black and camel – both must-have colors for fall! You can play this piece to your advantage, whether you’re going shopping and want to nail the effortless street-style look, or looking to channel an old-school preppy vibe.

Forever 21’s Outerwear Edit Collection has so many options —anyone with any type of style can find something chic to wear that will also keep them snug as the temperatures drop this season. Believe it or not, this collection is actually making us even more excited for the chilly weather to come; forget pumpkin spice lattés and fall foliage, just bring on the fab fall fashions!

Brought to you by Forever 21.

George Clooney's New Wife Amal Alamuddin Stole the Show on Their Wedding Weekend

George Clooney wed Amal Alamuddin this weekend in Venice, Italy, and as expected, it was a glamorous, star-studded event we only wish we could’ve snuck into.

Though we don’t know Alamuddin very well, we can tell we already love her (and thus approve of the union!). For starters, she’s a real smarty pants, and we admire that! Alamuddin is an Oxford-educated lawyer who specializes in international law and human rights. Her clients have even included WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange! Secondly, she’s beautiful! Her eyebrows are to die for. Oh, and she also speaks fluent French and Arabic, so no big deal, she’s not a superwoman.

But then there’s also her immaculate fashion sense. George Clooney may be the reason Hollywood is swooning over this wedding and all, but Amal is the one who stole the show leading up to the big day (and not just because she was the bride)!

Though we don’t have any word on the gown she wore to the couple’s actual wedding ceremony (sigh), we have plenty of her pre-nuptial and post-nuptial outfits on which to feast our eyes!

The night before the big day, Alamuddin stepped out with friends and family in a spectacular Alexander McQueen piece. The scarlet red V-neck dress was the perfect combination of edgy and feminine with the long train, capped sleeves and black, feather-like pattern lightly splashed across it. The McQueen dress was actually from the designer’s Resort 2011 collection, so that just goes to show she doesn’t need the latest season’s styles to look amazing!

Earlier in the weekend, she flaunted a stunning black-and-white-striped Dolce & Gabbana empire waist dress. Between her big black shades and the large hat box she toted, Amal seriously looked like Grace Kelly, only brunette.

On Sunday, Amal wore an even more stunning dress (as if that were possible) by Giambattista Valli Couture. The long-sleeved, creamy lace dress had a bubble-like shape, bearing her jealousy-inducing toned legs. Delicate red and purple flowers were embroidered over most of the dress, adding the perfect pop of color for a blushing bride.

If the course of their relationship is any indication of their married life together, Amal and George are going to live happily ever after. The lovebirds are two intelligent class acts (and stylish ones at that), and though we're still sad that we didn't get an invite to the wedding, we wish them all the best!

How to Wear Fall Dresses with Miss Me

$

The beginning of fall means that wonderful time of in-between-weather fashion. For many seasons, this is kind of an annoying time clothing-wise (i.e. when transitioning from winter to spring, you always end up carrying your jacket around). But as we bid farewell to summer and hello to true fall weather, we get to show off our fall clothes without having to hide our last remnants of a summer tan. Excellent!

Enter in one of my favorite combos: boots and a dress. Naturally I was bored of many of my current dress options that work so well with a pair of worn-in boots, so I got two new ones from Miss Me.

The first one I got was the Onyx High-Low Dress ($69). While we usually think of black dresses for night, this dress was fun to dress down for daytime. I paired this dress with ankle booties and carried a cream colored sweater just in case it got cool. The dress looks simple in this photo, but has nice details on the top — a bit of a floral, lace black trim and buttons in the back. But because the embellishments don’t overpower the dress, I could add a chunky necklace to go with it! Plus a great black day-to-night dress like this is perfect for a day of both class and internships, as it transitions well, so it was a win all-around!

The other dress I got was the Embroidered Peasant Dress ($74). This is definitely a day dress, so it was easy to make it work for a sunny day. The dress is super soft and lightweight, so even though it has sleeves, you can still be very comfortable and cool on a warm day. Because this dress is so feminine (the back is lacy along the shoulders), I chose to pair it with studded ankle boots, to just give it a touch more edge.

I Need Coffee... Beauty Products

Happy International Coffee Day!

September 29th is the day that we celebrate the wonderful gift of coffee—really, what would we do without it? Without my daily espresso, I become someone you don't want to see that day—really.

So when you do get your daily joe, how do you take it: black, milk and sugar, or topped with cute coffee art? What about… in your beauty products? As it turns out, starting your day out with coffee isn't just something you need after pulling an all-nighter.

DEPUFF
Morning after? The puffiness in your face, whether you binged on salty fried foods or one too many cocktails, is inevitable, but you don’t have to fight through the day puffy. Caffeine can reduce swelling because of its amazing diuretic effects that stimulate water loss. (Yep, kind of like how you need 10 bathroom breaks after just one cup of coffee.)

TIGHTEN AND SMOOTH
Just as caffeine perks you up, it can also stimulate and tighten up your skin. Pick up a moisturizer for a mini-facelift or a body scrub to help combat your cellulite, and get ready to see the skin transformation!

HAIR-PUCCINO
Coffee stains on your perfect white v-neck or your pearly whites is not so fun, but a glossy coffee finish for you hair could be the perfect treatment between dye jobs. Coffee gives a rich, natural stain for brunettes. Pour some java (not hot!) over your hair, cover your head in plastic wrap or a shower cap, and leave in for at least an hour or so. Why not enjoy an actual cup of joe while you wait?

CALM DOWN
Caffeine might make your hands jittery, but it actually helps contract blood vessels. If you find yourself a little to red, a powder or cream with caffeine can calm everything down, especially any redness.

BRIGHTEN
This is my favorite use for “coffee” beauty products! Unfortunately, my silly teenage hormones left me riddled with acne scars, but caffeine consistently shows up on the ingredients list for products that target discoloration and dark spots. I caffeinate myself in the morning and before bed!

Check out the caffeine and coffee-infused products below and start seeing the beauty benefits of your daily joe!

5 Signs He Wants to Be Your Boyfriend

$
0
0

You made it. You successfully battled through the limbo between friends and potentially something more. You survived the awkward, “Does he like me, or is it just my imagination?” phase. And you’re 97 percent sure that he is seriously digging you, but you can’t tell if he’s ready to take things to the next level and commit to you exclusively. Well, if he is showing any of the following signs, he may be ready to seal the deal and be your boyfriend.

1. He texts you on the reg

Men can be much simpler to decipher than women. Guys don’t waste time on things that are unimportant to them, especially when it comes to texting. Unlike collegiettes who sometimes feel the need to give everyone the time of day, guys don’t put in any more energy than is necessary.

When Brad, a junior at Emory University, wanted to show his now-girlfriend, Caitlin, that he was interested in being with her exclusively, he texted her like he was already in a relationship with her.

“I would text her each morning with a simple, ‘Good morning!’ and then again around dinner and once more before going to bed,” Brad says. “I just wanted her to know that I was thinking about her throughout the day.”

He certainly doesn’t text his friends, “Good morning, beautiful!” or, “I hope you have a good day! Good luck on your history exam!” When he remembers the little details, not only was he thinking about you, but he also genuinely wants you to be happy. By taking the time out to shoot you a quick text, he’s showing you that it’s no trouble at all for him to pause between rounds of Mario Kart to bring a smile to your face. And that’s a big deal.

2. He remembers the little things

He often can’t remember what he ate for dinner last night or even to feed his betta fish before leaving the house each morning, so that makes the fact that he remembered your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt that much more special. And he even added chocolate chips and gummy bears, just the way you like it!

Jasmine, a sophomore at Missouri State University, knew her now-boyfriend was going to stick around once he surprised her with a night full of her favorite things.

“It was perfect,” she says. “He picked me up and took me roller-skating, something I’d said I always wanted to do but had never actually done. And then he bought me my favorite ice cream and took me to where we had our first date. That’s where he asked me to be his girlfriend.”

Because you’re important to him, the little things about you are important to him as well. Your favorite ice cream flavor, the way you like lemon with your water at restaurants and even landmarks where you shared some cool moments together are stored in a special place in his mind. It’s the knowledge he taps into whenever he wants to seem irresistibly thoughtful and cute, and it works every time. Remembering the little things is what sets him apart from the rest.

3. He shows how he feels through body language

Unlike the creep from the bar last night who was too close for comfort, your hunk knows just want to get a little closer to you. His body language says it all. At a crowded party, he slides closer to you almost unperceptively and whispers that you look beautiful. He pulls you into him, welcoming you to lean on his chest while you’re watching a movie. And he puts a little extra oomph into that goodnight kiss, upping the ante every time and making each kiss better than the last.

Sophia knew her boyfriend wanted to be something more because “he was such a cuddler.”  She says, “It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced with a guy before. We would be watching a movie and cuddling, of course. But then the movie would end and the cuddling wouldn’t. We could just lay like that and talk for hours without doing anything else.”

Actions speak louder than words. And often, so does body language. If he’s consistently the one to initiate holding hands or even cuddling on the couch, he likes you. Guys don’t show their lovey-dovey side to just anybody.

4. He slips compliments into typical conversation

Guys don’t usually associate themselves with the word “feelings.” So when they say something that hints at their feelings for you, it’s important.

His feelings could be conveyed in a fleeting compliment as simple as, “You smell nice.” But when you translate that, he’s actually saying, “I like you. Let’s do this thing.”

When he wanted to ask his current girlfriend to go out with him, Derrick, a sophomore at the University of Chicago, wasn’t quite sure how to go about it at first. “I did the only thing I could think of at the time: I would just tell Caroline [his girlfriend] what I liked about her, and it worked,” he says.

Those compliments that you brush off without a second thought? Give them that second thought! He worked up to the courage to compliment the way the sun makes your hair a little more golden and your eyes a little brighter. Take it to heart. He means it and wants you to know he notices the little things that make you sparkle in his eyes.

5. He does things he wouldn’t normally do

He’ll learn to love Bravo and memorize all the shows on that channel. That’s what Abby, a junior at Loyola University Chicago, says her boyfriend did. “I knew he really liked me when he would come over and watch Real Housewives with me,” she says. “And eventually, even though I already knew it was coming, he just came right out and told me how he felt. He was pretty clear about his feelings for me, whether or not he knew it at the time.”

Even if he may think he’s being stealthy about his slick moves to win you over, you know what he’s up to. He’s not walking 20 minutes across campus to study with his friends. He’s not helping his friends move in a million boxes to their new apartments. He’s different with you, and he wants you to realize that he’s different with you.

Whether he’s texting you cute “Good morning!” texts or simply complimenting how particularly nice you look today, he’s showing that he’s into you. And not only that, but he wants to continue letting you know how much he likes you—but in a more committed relationship. He likes it, and he’s going to put a [label] on it.

The 17 Scariest Moments of a Girl's Life

Halloween is just around the corner, but we're not here to talk about that kind of scary. Sometimes the scariest moments in a girl's life aren't the ones that happen while she's watching a horror film, they're the ones that happen when she's least expecting it. Just reliving some of these may be enough to send you into an adrenaline-filled Nutella binge, so beware!

1. The moment you look in a mirror and realize you've had something stuck in your teeth since breakfast.

And you wonder if your friends really care about you at all if they let you walk around this way.

2. Sending a text to the wrong person.

Nothing is scarier than realizing you sent a message that says, "I hate Karen so much" to Karen.

3. Dropping your phone into a pedicure bath.

And your life flashes before your eyes.

4. Sending a booty-call text to your mother.

Not a chance she'll let this one go.

5. Hearing a knock on the door right after you've already taken your bra off for the day.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

6. Remembering that you're wearing Spanx mid-hook-up.

There is no sexy way to remove Spanx.

7. The moment right before you fall over in heels and stumble ungracefully while trying to find your balance.

You can try all you want, but chances are, you're going down.

8. Waking up from a particularly long nap and forgetting where you are and what time it is.

It's even scarier if you wake up and think that you slept through the night.

9. Running into an awkward hook-up on campus.

And you avoid each other like the plague.

10. Being called on in class while you were on Tinder.

Now they all know what you're up to.

11. Forgetting the address on your fake ID.

And now you'll have to wait outside for your friends.

12. Reading your texts from last night.

Simultaneously informational and incredibly terrifying.

13. Or having your friends recount your actions.

And they will laugh at you instead of with you.

14. Realizing that you have an assignment due at midnight... at 11:45 p.m.

And you quickly have to come to terms with the fact that your grade is going down the toilet.

15. The moment you lose your internet connection while taking an online exam.

Cue the crying and frantically emailing your professor.

16. Meeting someone for the first time and revealing something you could have only known from stalking him or her on Facebook.

Oh, you're a competitive water-skiing champ, right?

17. Being asked what you're doing after college.

Why do people think it's okay to ask this?

Pretty horrifying, right? This Halloween, keep in mind that things will get scary, but never as scary as dropping your phone in a pedicure tub. Never.

How to Throw the Best Halloween Party This Year

$

You may have stopped trick-or-treating when you went to middle school, but in college, Halloween is exciting again. Sure, there are theme parties on campus every weekend of the year, but nothing beats an awesome Halloween party! We’re super excited about Halloween here at Her Campus, so check out our tips on throwing an amazing party of your own this time around.

Choose a specific theme.

Go for a pop culture reference. Take a cue from Community and plan a spooky, Pulp Fiction-inspired party, or recreate a scene from your favorite horror movie. You can use children’s toy swords and fake blood (red jelly works too) as props to set up crime scenes.

Or use a traditional Halloween theme. Not into spooky stuff? You could also host a less scary Halloween party with inspiration from classic films like Monsters, Inc. Encourage your friends to dress up as their favorite monster (or just like Boo), and play classic tracks like the “Monster Mash” to set the mood.

Encourage your guests to be creative. If your friends are into more nontraditional Halloween costumes, suggest a theme that will let them show their creative sides. Throw a Lady Gaga-themed Monster Ball with everyone wearing their favorite Gaga outfit, or have everyone dress up as characters from a popular TV show or movie. You can still use Halloween decorations and music, but if everyone’s sticking to a common theme, the party will be more cohesive and way more fun!

Use decorations to set the mood.

No party is complete without decorations, so stock up on fun Halloween supplies.

Don’t forget the basics. Orange and black plates, cups, napkins and cutlery are must-buys, as are some festive tablecloths and streamers.

Get creative with the extras. Party favors like eyeball erasers and tiny pumpkins make great table decorations. Spider web decorations and skeleton light strings (you can find these and similar pieces at most party supply stores) will take your party to a new level of fun.

It’s not Halloween without plenty of pumpkins. If you don’t know how to or don’t have the time to carve a pumpkin, use acrylic paints to make faces on a few pumpkins to set out around the house (you can buy pumpkins at most grocery stores in the fall).

Use some decorations outside, too. If you’re in a dorm or apartment, this can be a little tricky since you don’t want uninvited guests crashing your party, but even just a few cutout bats, spiders or tombstones will do the trick to get your guests in a party mood before they walk through the front door.

Go for classic activities with fun twists.

Host a costume contest, but up the stakes. Have an incentive such as a gift card to your favorite local restaurant as prize—if there’s something to win, people will be more likely to go all out with their costumes. If a gift card seems excessive, a bag of candy will do the trick, too.

Bob for apples… or something else! If bobbing for apples feels a bit stale, invent a new game, like eating gummy worms or gummy spiders (or any other Halloween candy) without your hands. It will be fun to watch and bring your party guests together.

Make up your own games. If you know your friends would be into a mummifying contest to see who can wrap each other with toilet paper first, go for it! The point of hosting a party is that it’s your own, so don’t be afraid to improvise and come up with your own activity ideas.

No party is complete without food.

While you should definitely offer basics like soda and chips, put out some cute, Halloween-themed foods to add more fun to the party.

Choose classic Halloween cookies. We love sugar cookies with orange frosting and black sprinkles, but there are tons of other super easy options to choose from. The Pillsbury sugar cookies printed with ghosts and pumpkins are delicious, and all you have to do is slice and bake them. If you want to get more creative—think bat and cat cookies decorated with licorice and candy corn—Pillsbury has tons of recipes.

Or make your own Halloween cupcakes. Create your own Funfetti dough with Halloween sprinkles to bake festive cookies or cupcakes. Use candy pieces and sprinkles to decorate the cupcakes in Halloween style, like these adorable black cat cupcakes.

Go for tried-and-true Halloween foods like dirt pudding. You loved it when you were younger, and it still tastes just as good. Top chocolate pudding with crushed Oreos and gummy worms, and you’ll have an easy and delicious Halloween treat.

Take the pumpkin theme to a new level. You’re already using pumpkins as decorations, so why not serve pumpkin-themed foods, too? Pumpkin pie is always a safe bet, or be adventurous and use Dreyer’s/Edy’s Pumpkin Ice Cream (about $4 for a carton at most grocery stores) to make Halloween sundaes.

Don’t forget to set out some candy. Reese’s Pieces are a must since they’re Halloween colored, and gummies are festive, too. And, of course, you have to serve plenty of candy corn. Set out a few different options to keep everyone satisfied and add a variety of color to your table.

Don’t forget a killer playlist.

If you’re going with a movie theme, you should definitely play a few memorable tracks from the soundtrack, but mix it up with Halloween songs, too. Halloween hits like “Monster Mash” and the Ghostbusters theme are musts, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box. There are tons of ‘80s and ‘90s songs that can be interpreted as Halloween hits—the cheesier, the better. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby. This song is great for an eerie party. Bonus points for the cheesy, faux spooky background noises.
  • “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult. The only prescription for an awesome party is… more cowbell! But seriously, could anything be more fitting of a Halloween party than something with “reaper” in the title?
  • “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon. This song is about werewolves. Need we say more?
  • “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC. This classic track is perfect for a holiday that originated from discussion of souls and the afterlife. “Hell’s Bells” is a great choice, too.
  • “Disturbia” by Rihanna. This is a classic party track with just the right amount of eeriness for a Halloween party.
  • “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. This song has a spooky vibe you can still dance to.
  • “Secret” by The Pierces. Whether or not you watch Pretty Little Liars, this song will send chills down your spine.
  • “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Even without a theme party, this song is a must (for obvious reasons).
  • “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. No Halloween party would be complete without this ‘80s hit. What’s even better than just playing the track? Learn the dance with your friends before the party and impress your guests with your awesome moves.

What's In My Makeup Bag: Beauty Blogger Nina

No time for your morning cup of coffee? No biggie! No time for makeup? Sound the alarm! For some, the expression “but first, coffee” is a life motto. For me (and most of you beauty-obsessed collegiettes) the mantra to live by is actually, “but first, makeup.” To learn more about which makeup products I can’t start my day without, keep reading!

Face

Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra 24H Liquid Foundation ($46) suits my combination skin perfectly. Its superior coverage never ceases to amaze me—so good, you can skip concealer. And I kid you not, the stuff won’t budge (through sun or snow). On days I want to keep things light, I mix equal parts of MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer ($19) and Lancôme’s Imanance Tinted Day Creme SPF 15 ($55).

The remainder of my face makeup routine goes like this:

  • I apply MAC’s Powder Blush in Well Dressed ($21) onto the apples of my cheek and sweep it up along my cheek bones.
  • Then, I reach for Lancôme’s Star Bronzer Natural Glow Long Lasting Bronzing Powder in Solaire ($35) and apply it onto the hollows of my cheeks.
  • Using MAC’s 224 Tapered Blending Brush ($32), I apply the same bronzer to contour my nose.
  • To top my face off, I dab bareMinerals’ Glimmer in Queen Phyllis ($14) above my cheekbones using my index finger. This multi-purpose shimmery pigment (pictured below) also intensifies a brown and gold smoky eye.

Eyes

My everyday glam consists of mascara and a few dabs of lipstick. I adore daddy-long leg spider lashes and achieving them requires my full focus, which means if anyone interrupts me mid-mascara application, things get ugly. I coat my lashes with Lancôme DÉFINICILS High Definition Mascara ($28) then go over it with L’Oréal’s Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara ($11). The key to a long, faux-like fringe is to start at the root of your lashes and always, always coat both the front and back.

My eyebrows are naturally thick so I usually skip filling them in. When I do, I use MAC’s Eye Brow Pencil in Lingering ($16). I have a full blown obsession with e.l.f.’s Essential Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara ($1) and set my eyebrows with it everyday (whether I’m wearing makeup or not). This wallet-friendly goodie is gold—only $1 and it makes your eyebrows appear as though they're filled in! Products like this are proof that the best makeup isn't always the most expensive.

In the event I'm in the mood for a quick smoky eye, I keep these eye products (pictured above) on hand:

Lips

Hempz’s Ultra Moisturizing Herbal Lip Balm SPF 15 ($9) is my go-to lip balm. For a pop of color, I keep the following lipsticks and lip liners in my bag, from left to right:

Have you tried any of the products I mentioned above? If so, tell me what you think of them! Then give me the scoop on your makeup bag essentials!

5 Myths About Weight Loss, Debunked

$

Nobody does weight loss like Regina George. We mean, come on, remember the all-carb diet and how she couldn't go to Taco Bell? Tragic. Or when she went on the South Beach Fat Flush? Oh, and how could anyone forget the genius idea that was Kalteen bars? We laughed, we cringed and we told ourselves that we would never drink only cranberry juice cocktail for 72 hours in the name of losing three pounds.

But let's be real, we've heard and believed some pretty interesting theories about how to lose weight ourselves, and a lot of them just aren't true. Check out these five myths about weight loss that are about to get debunked!

1. Reducing your fat intake will help you lose weight

The word "fat" is in fats, so it makes sense that fats would make you fat (tongue-twister, anyone?), right? Surprisingly, this isn't necessarily the case. Essential fatty acids are just that—essential to your body. You need them so your body can carry out its everyday functions. There are also "good fats," otherwise known as monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, which can be beneficial to your heart, cholesterol and overall health. They can be found in foods like peanut butter, olives, soy milk, tofu and fatty fish (like tuna and trout).

"Fats hold a very important place in the diet," says Adele Tevlin, an executive weight loss coach. "Good fats to include in your diet are avocado, salmon and nuts and seeds."

Unfortunately, fats get a bad rap because popular media and marketing antics often group all fats into the "bad" category and call it a day. They use sneaky marketing tactics and powerful imagery to take advantage of this misinformation about fats, and it's working. You can't walk down a single aisle in a grocery store without seeing the words "low-fat" or "fat-free" in big, proud letters.

"It's easy for students to get confused by these products and fall into the ‘Fats Make You Fat’ trap,” Tevlin says. “What most people don't know is that these ‘low-fat’ and ‘fat-free’ products are filled with sugars and chemicals to make them palatable, which in turn is actually more fattening than the original product."

So even though low-fat and fat-free products seem enticing, don't get too caught up in the promises of weight loss—they probably won't help you lose weight in a healthy way at all. Instead, go for good fat instead of no fat. While fat intake depends very much on your lifestyle, weight, age and overall health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that the average person keep his or her total fat intake to 20 to 30 percent of calories, while limiting saturated fats to less than 10 percent of your calories and trans fats to 1 percent of your calories.

2. It's all about the calories

For such small numbers, the calorie counts on the nutrition labels sure hold a lot of weight for many people. It's hard to go a day without being reminded by someone or something that wow, food actually has calories. It's no wonder that some people are caught up in counting calories in order to lose weight. This is wishful thinking, though, because losing weight successfully isn't simply about doing the math. Eating fewer calories does not mean weighing less.

In fact, dramatically reducing the calories that you consume can actually lead to loss of muscle mass, low energy and other health problems. Plus, research has shown that there is a correlation between how much you restrict your calorie intake and how poorly you adhere to your diet. What does that mean? If your dieting always leaves you hungry, you're going to want to eat. A lot.

"I think people in general have the wrong impression that losing weight is all about reducing calories as much as possible," says Lisa Prince, nutrition specialist and weight loss coach. "Never eat less than 1,200 calories, and most college women need a lot more than that, especially athletes!"

On the other hand, the kinds of calories you eat do make a difference. When you eat the right kinds of food, losing weight will get easier. Striking a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals is the key to sustaining a healthy body. While fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet, choosing healthy carbs and fiber sources like whole grains helps boost energy. By getting 21 to 38 grams of fiber per day, you can also take advantage of a handful of great health benefits, like lowering your risk for diabetes. Adults should eat at least 0.8 grams of protein per 2.2 pounds of body weight per day and can get the protein from healthy sources like fish, beans, seeds, peas, chicken and soy products.

"With the right foods, women can lose weight in a healthy manner, balance hormones and maintain high-energy levels throughout the day," says Dr. John Salerno, the author of the book Fight Fat With Fat. "A lifestyle with an emphasis on natural, organic fats with plenty of vegetables, physical exercise and stress-free activities [is a good approach]."

So you really don't need to torture yourself by starving in order to lose weight. In fact, counting calories might even backfire on you. If you eat healthy foods and exercise, you'll find that you'll be able to leave the counting to math class.

3. Skipping meals will help you lose weight

You find yourself swamped with all the schoolwork you have to complete and practices and meetings you have to attend. No time to eat? No problem. Skipping meals saves time, and you might even lose a few pounds in the process. Or so the reasoning goes. Despite the seemingly straightforward logic, not eating doesn't equate to more pounds lost.

"A common myth is the less I eat, the more weight I will lose, or it could be framed, ‘If I don’t eat all day, that will help me lose weight because I am consuming less calories!’” Prince says. "Nothing could be further from the truth."

Your body is in itself an efficient fuel-burning machine, but only if you keep feeding it regularly.

"Whenever you skip meals, you also slow down your metabolism and encourage bad eating habits," Dr. Salerno says.

According to Prince, to lose weight, it is helpful to start your metabolism bright and early by eating something healthy, like a banana or a tablespoon of natural peanut butter, within an hour of getting up. Throughout the day, keep eating small, healthy snacks and meals every three to four hours to keep your metabolism humming along.

4. Carbs are the enemy

People also seem to hate on the carbs a lot, but carbs definitely don't deserve all this bad attention. Carbohydrates, which include sugars, starches and fiber, provide energy for the body, especially the brain and the nervous system.

"Young, impressionable women may quickly believe that carbs are the enemy," Tevlin says. "There is a time and place for carbohydrates in the diet, and it's important to know when that is."

According to Tevlin, consuming carbohydrates in the morning might raise your blood sugar too quickly and can cause cravings for sweets later in the day. Tevlin also suggests sticking with mostly protein, fat and vegetables for breakfast, lunch and snacks, and leaving the carbs for dinner. With that being said, healthy carbs like brown rice, millet, quinoa, beans, fruits and vegetables can be incorporated into your diet throughout the day for a boost of long-lasting energy.

And to answer the question that's on everyone's mind: Is butter a carb? If only.

5. Late-night calories will make you gain more weight than daytime calories

Those 1 a.m. food runs really seem to pack on the pounds, but the late-night calories might not necessarily be the culprit. Calories are calories, and they don't discriminate.

"Many girls believe that any calories eaten at night are directly stored as fat when we go to sleep, but this is not [necessarily] the case." Tevlin says. "Calories consumed later in the day are not the problem; it's the behavior surrounding it."

Your body will store any extra calories beyond your daily caloric needs as fat, but this happens regardless of the time of day in which you consume those extra calories. According to Tevlin, late-night eating can lead to weight gain because we tend to have bad habits when it comes to munching and snacking at night. For example, we tend to mindlessly eat or have late-night cravings for hyperpalatable foods, or foods that are high in fat and sugar.

“A combinations of mindless eating in front of the TV and the choices we make lead to weight gain,” Tevlin says.

If you stay within your body's daily caloric needs, however, nighttime eating doesn't actually cause weight gain. So instead of spending quality time with your bags of chips and candy late at night in front of the TV, try stocking your fridge with healthy and fresh foods to combat those midnight cravings. That way, the right choice will be the easy choice, too.

Surprised yet? These myths almost make Regina George's diets seem slightly more reasonable. Almost. If you're trying to lose weight, make sure to do your research first; make a plan; set small, attainable lifestyle changes and develop healthy habits. And, remember that baking a cake once in a while filled with rainbows and smiles that everyone can eat and be happy never hurt anybody.

U-Haul Lesbians: Should You Move in With Your Girlfriend?

$
0
0

So, there’s this girl you can’t shut up about. She totally understands you on a level that no one else seems to, she knows how to console you when you’re upset and, quite frankly, you can’t get enough of her. Suddenly, you’re staying at her apartment all the time (or she’s staying at yours), to the point where you’re basically living together. So you think to yourself, “Why not make it official and move in together?”

We all know the old joke: What do lesbians bring on the second date? A U-Haul. But where does the U-Haul lesbian stereotype come from—and is there any truth to it? We’re here to give you the truth on why you might be so set on moving in with the girl you’re dating, how to handle it and what you should be thinking about before moving in with your new boo.

The science behind the label

When you’re first connecting with someone, it’s only natural that you’re going to want to spend every single second of the day with her. You don’t want to leave her side, and when you do, you’re only thinking about the next time you can both be together again.

Mary Gorham Malia, the founder of Gay Girl Dating Coach, says that a lot of this has to do with how women are made up biologically.

“As women, our number one thing is that we are so much more focused on relationships and connection than men are,” she explains. “Gay men don’t have the U-Haul stereotype because they have different DNA and different hormones.”

Malia goes on to explain that after sex, the female body releases a hormone called oxytocin, which is an attachment hormone that encourages trust, relaxation and psychological stability. That chemical connection makes you want more of the person and makes you not want to let them go.

“The other thing is, you don’t see this play out in heterosexual relationships, because men tend to go slower,” Malia says. “So when you have two women, they both have the urge to create connection, create relationships, and then you add sex on top of it, [and] you have this chemistry experiment catalyzed by orgasm. This is really a false sense of intimacy because when we have sex, we think we are now intimately connected, when [love and lust] are two different things.”

However, sexually active women aren’t the only ones prone to this fake love bug; kissing can also release oxytocin.

It doesn’t matter how old you are; this infatuation hormone is here to stay. Whether we’re in our early 20s or in our late 50s, when we have sex or even just kiss, we feel so wrapped up in the person we’re with that we feel like it must be love. When you have that kind of connection, why wouldn’t you want to live with that lovely lady?

How to handle the urge to merge

If you’re really trying to fight off the burning need you might have to move in with your girlfriend, have no fear; we’re here to help! Relationship specialist Christina Spaccavento, who often works with LGBTQ+ clients, says that you need to take things step-by-step in order to build a strong relationship.

“If couples feel the need to move in together after only a short period of time, it is always helpful to remember that the dating stage is an essential part of building a strong relationship,” she says. “It’s about getting to know each other, organizing fun and exciting dates, learning about each other’s sexuality and falling in love. There is plenty of time to settle down and nest, so take some time to enjoy the dating process.”

You might think that you know your girl well enough that you’re practically mind twins, but trust us, if you’ve been dating for anything less than a year, you still have plenty to find out about each other. Come up with creative ways to create intimacy in other ways, like keeping a couple’s journal.

Still feeling the urge to merge? Try setting a check-in point for another time in the future. Malia suggests waiting six months into the relationship to move in together.

“If it’s really a relationship that can last, six months is not a long time to wait,” she says. “In six months, you don’t have to blow up your whole world over it.”

What to consider before making the move

You might feel like you’re totally ready to take the next step and move right along with the move-in process. You and bae are in it to win it, and you are so ready to pack up and start this new life with her. Good for you! However, there are a few things you should do before you go ahead and call our good friends at U-Haul.

Expect the fireworks to fizzle out

As much as we’d love to tell you that your whole living experience with her will be one huge, sexy slumber party, after a while, the novelty of it all will eventually slip away. The honeymoon phase always ends, especially when you’re seeing your partner almost every waking second of the day. Your life together will become routine, and it won’t have the same thrill as you running out in the middle of the night just to snuggle with her.

“Moving in together is just an everyday experience on how to deal with just the boring stuff of life,” Malia says.

Make sure you’re ready to go from Sex and the City to just another night in about a few weeks flat—and be content with it.

Come up with creative date-night-in ideas

Coming up with creative date ideas that you can do at home is a perfect way to keep the romance flowing throughout your relationship. You’ll probably end up having a lot more of these now that you’re living together, it’s important to keep each other on your toes when it comes to new ideas.

Try to play off of different things you already know that you’re both interested in while still catering to her specific interests. Whether it’s cooking dinner together, having a movie night or even trying out a new hobby together, this will encourage the bonding process and increase spontaneity as you learn to live with each other.

Ask what it means for each of you

People move in together for different reasons, whether it be to advance the relationship or to just test the waters. But do you have a completely different reason for moving in that she does?

Malia says these are things you need to be talking about and considering. Many people get heartbroken because they assume that their partner is just as invested in the relationship as they are.

“In a lot of relationships, one person is more committed than the other,” she says. “So if it [ends], you’re the one who’s really going to be heartbroken, because you’re probably not going to be the one to end it; it’s the other girl. Really be clear on … where you are on the same page and where you’re not on the same page.”

Be prepared to deal with her quirks

You know all of the cute, weird things she does, like the way she fidgets when she’s nervous or how she absentmindedly bites her nails. But those cute things can become really annoying, really quickly.

“Things that you may not know if you just rush to live together are that you might be neat, but she’s a total slob,” Malia says. “It’s going to make you crazy, what are you going to do about things that you don’t know? You might pay your bills on time and she doesn’t. Does she show up late all the time and you’re an on-time person?”

Malia emphasizes that you need to find a way to live your lives in a way that won’t disrupt each other’s flow too much. Make sure you take note of the things that annoy you, and have her do the same. This way, you can both try to work on ways to accommodate each other and make it a lot more bearable to live with each other.

While the U-Haul stereotype continues to plague queer girls everywhere, you should never let it push your relationship in a way you don’t want it to go. You have your whole life ahead of you to test the waters when it comes to living with your significant other. However, if you do feel like it’s the right time to move in with your partner, college is the perfect experimental time to try it out.

Whether you decide to keep your toothbrush or your whole life at her place, we wish you the best in strengthening your relationship on this brand new journey!

11 Ways to Stay Safe at College

For a lot of people, college means one thing: independence. You no longer have to live by Mom and Dad’s rules. You can go anywhere you want, stay out as long as you want and hang out with whomever you want. But with all this new freedom you have, it’s extremely important to take responsibility, especially when it comes to your personal safety.

Whether it’s your first semester away from home or you’re a returning student, keep these crucial tips in mind to stay safe at college, no matter what situation you’re facing!

Going out

1. Stick together

We’re sure you’ve heard of the buddy system, so make sure you actually stick to it the entire night! We’re not saying you should to stay glued to your girlfriends, but keep an eye on them. “Be a good friend,” says SABRE College Safety Program Manager Marisa McKay. “Make a plan with your friends beforehand and don’t leave anyone behind at a party, especially if they’re at a stage where they can’t make the best decisions for themselves.”

2. Make sure your phone is charged

We know cell phone batteries can drain quickly, so make a point of plugging it in while you’re straightening your hair or doing your makeup before you head out. The last thing you want to happen is realizing your phone is dead when you need to make an emergency phone call.

3. Carry emergency cash

These days, we rely on our credit and debit cards to pay for almost everything. At least when you go out at night, bring cash with you, just in case (and we mean more than three dollars!). “Having cash can help get you or a friend out of a bad situation quickly,” McKay says. You don’t want to make the risky decision of walking home simply because you have no money with you.

On your way home

4. Dont stop moving

Unfortunately, an attack can take place anywhere, even on your beautiful college campus, especially when you’re alone and entering your building. Spend as little time as possible lingering outside your residence. As you approach your building, start to take out your keys so you can head right in. Don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk or in front of your building because you need to answer your friend’s text.

You can also call a friend or family member to keep on the phone as you walk home. But be careful; don’t get too wrapped up in a conversation that you don’t realize someone might be following you. “Being engaged in your surroundings is key,” McKay says. “Keep your head up, look around every so often and don’t seem distracted.”

5. Carry pepper spray or pepper gel

“A well-prepared person has a plan,” McKay says, so consider carrying tangible defense mechanisms. SABRE is the worldwide leader in pepper spray and makes various items you can use to ensure your safety.

SABRE makes pepper spray and pepper gel, which are both effective, but in different ways. Both sprays have a 10-foot range so you can protect yourself while at a safe distance from an attacker. The gel provides a greater containment of the substance, which means it will only affect that which it directly contacts. This means that it helps prevent wind blow back and prevents you or others nearby from feeling any irritating effects.  “Our products are 67 times hotter than hot sauce,” McKay explains. “So physically, no one is going to be able to keep their eyes open at that point.” She warns, however, that sprays meant to combat bears or wasps are not interchangeable with pepper sprays and gels meant for humans. Opt for these campus-approved picks instead!

Review your state laws for restrictions on pepper spray and gel. Pepper spray is legal throughout all 50 states in the U.S., but some states have minor size restrictions (and you have to complete a form at purchase in D.C. and New York), so know the rules before you make any purchases! The Campus Safety Pepper Gel meets the size requirements throughout the US.

6. Use a personal alarm

SABRE’s personal alarm key chain, which is the size of a flash drive, easily attaches to your backpack or purse, so you can carry it on you wherever you go. If you feel you are in danger, you separate the device from the chain, and a 100-decibel alarm that can be heard up to 300 feet away will sound. The device even comes in colors like pink and red, which support the National Breast Cancer Foundation and RAINN, respectively!

In your dorm

7. Make a habit of securing windows and doors

We just made a point of telling you how you should enter your residence quickly, so that means you’re 100 percent safe inside, right? Well, the truth is, you’re never fully secure anywhere.

“Just because you’re in your building, doesn’t mean there won’t be anyone threatening present,” McKay says. “Someone threatening can be let in unintentionally, or they might even live in your apartment complex.” It’s easy to leave our doors unlocked or even open when we just want to run across the hall or get the mail, but it’s just not smart. Prevent someone from entering by locking it whenever you leave and whenever you go inside. Any windows that are adjacent to a fire escape should be locked, especially when you leave or go to sleep.

8. Consider an alarm system

We’re not saying you should call ADT and have a security system installed into your apartment – that’s just unrealistic and expensive. Instead, opt for something that’s affordable and simple, like SABRE’s Dorm/Apartment Kit. The package, which retails for only $26.99, includes a doorstop alarm, a window alarm and a personal alarm, like the one we mentioned earlier. The doorstop feature will sound a 120-decibel alarm as well as help prevent the door from opening. The window alarm, which can easily be installed, will not only alert you that someone may be trying to break-in, but also scare off the would-be criminal. Generally, intruders want to take the path of least resistance, so this alarm is perfect for a back window that might face a dark alley or one that is covered by bushes. When the alarm sounds, the intruder won’t want to risk continuing inside!

In general

9. Participate in SABRE’s College Safety Program

Aside from providing its easy-to-use products, SABRE also hosts a program that can come to your school to coach you and your classmates on how to prevent threats and identify dangerous situations. Instructors will also train you to deter an attacker using hands-on drills and real-life simulations. Are you in a sorority? Do you lead a student club? Whatever the case may be, gather your fellow collegiettes and bring SABRE to your school!

10. Be cautious, not paranoid

McKay advises young women to practice what she and the safety-savvy folks at SABRE like to call “relaxed awareness.” When you’re in a relaxed, yet cautious state, you are more capable of distinguishing a dangerous situation from something that might just be in your head. So if you’re walking alone, you don’t need to be turning around after every step you take to make sure you aren’t being followed by someone. Instead, take steps to increase your awareness in your surroundings, which can include things like taking one earbud out if you’re listening to music, or looking ahead of you instead of down at your phone.

11. Dont be afraid to speak up

Whether you’re at a party and someone is getting too close for comfort, or if you’re on the street and you see a man attempting to rob someone, don’t hesitate to say something. “Verbal commands can be incredibly effective,” McKay says. “If you were on the street and saw a man about to grab a girl’s purse, screaming ‘no’ would draw the attention of anyone else in the area.” As a bystander, you have a greater ability to think on your feet and alert others if something is wrong, which could come in handy if you ever find yourself in a tricky situation.

There’s no need to feel scared on your own campus – all you need to feel is prepared! That way, you can have all the fun you like without regrets. Get safety-savvy ASAP this semester!

Finding the right headphones for you can be tricky. You could stick with the ones your smartphone came with, but there's nothing particularly special—or super cute about them. (Plus, they just might break in a few months, or get so tangled in your bag you'll never use them again, or you'll lose them...). When you're on campus, you want durable headphones that deliver great sound, that don't make your ears ache after an hour, and most importantly, are ultra chic! So if you're in need of a headphone makeover, check out our top picks that are super stylish—and then some.

1. Urbanears - Plattan Plus ($69.90)

The Plattan Plus is the perfect everyday pair of headphones to use walking around campus, in the computer lab, or on the bus. Unlike the regular Plattan, these come with a microphone and volume control remote, making the extra $10 worth every penny. The padded headband is lined with a soft mesh fabric for extra comfort!

2. Bose - Freestyle Earbuds (129.95)

Good sound quality doesn’t have to come from headphones that look more like futuristic tech gear than they do wearable accessories. Bose has recently released its Freestyle line of earbuds, which play great quality sound and come in multiple colors and patterns (We personally love the indigo and mint colored combo!). The design of this style enhances durability through the “StayHear” ear tips, which help the buds remain in place, especially when you're on a long run. These are the perfect pair for the exercise freak!

3. Sennheiser - Urbanite On-Ear Headphones ($199.95)

If you consider yourself to be one of those people who has a deep relationship with music—as in, you live for the moment that a beat drops, or you crave a balance between the bass and treble—then this sleek new pair from Sennheiser is for you. The Urbanite headphones offer premium sound (hint: use them to tune out loud neighbors when you're trying to study), through velvet-y soft over-ear coverings that are so comfortable you'll experience headphones in a brand new way. Plus, they're great for collegiettes on the go—fold them up to make them compact enough to fit into any bag!

4. Happy Plugs - In-Ear Rose Gold Earbuds ($39.99)

Who says rose gold is just for jewelry? These headphones are the perfect opportunity to embrace the trend. This set of earbuds features a built-in microphone and remote to ensure accessibility. Plus, they look just like a pretty, delicate necklace when worn.

5. Molami - Bight in Napa black and gold ($150)

If Kanye West were a pair of earbuds, he would be these. Molami's Bight brings together style and comfort and produces a stand out design product. Covered in rich, high-quality leather, the earbuds feature the "EarClick System," which secures the earpiece in two separate places in your ear in order to relieve pressure from your ear canal.

6. Frends - Frends with Benefits 'Layla' ($149.99)

If you are looking the ultimate style-enhancing headphones, look no further than Frends. Known to be loved by the fashion set, each pair has caps that are easily interchangeable so you can customize the look you’re going for. This set is so decked out it almost looks like a piece of jewelry. The volume remote is even bejeweled! While they’re a bit pricey, the freedom to pick and choose which caps you want (and the excellent sound!) makes them totally worth the splurge.

You already love listening to music—why not do so in style?

The 10 Most Epic College Halloween Celebrations

They say that acceptance is the first step to recovery, so we’re just going to say it: we are too old for trick-or-treating. Instead of running around our neighborhoods with bags full of Kit Kat bars and Twizzlers, we have upgraded to dressing up as provocative animals (à la Mean Girls) and partying on frat row. However, some campuses beat most colleges’ Halloween-themed frat parties with some seriously awesome traditions. Don’t believe us? Check out these 10 spooky celebrations, ranked in order of epicness.

10. Harvey Mudd College’s Halloweiner

Imagine if your two favorite holidays—tailgating season (which basically is one holiday) and Halloween—joined forces to create an out-of-this-world celebration. At Harvey Mudd College, that fantasy is a reality. To start off their Halloween festivities with a bang, students barbeque hundreds (yes, hundreds) of pounds of meat for the entire student body. Halloweiner is basically a tailgate for this highly anticipated holiday.

9. SUNY Geneseo’s Halloweekend

Every collegiette knows that Halloween is no longer a one-night extravaganza, but at SUNY Geneseo, Halloweekend is more than a slew of frat parties. The festivities start with students rooting for their school’s hockey team… in costume.

“Freshman year, my guy friends went as Braveheart in full kilts and school-colored face paint a la Mel Gibson,” says Megan Killea, a graduate of SUNY Geneseo. “My girlfriends and I went as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

The celebration continues with a street fair on Geneseo’s Main Street, which includes a Halloween parade as well as cider donuts—be still, our hearts.

“Even the college kids come out to see it,” adds Megan. “They get their daily dose of nostalgia and innocence before they go home and start pregaming in their costumes.” Meshed with a plethora of Halloween–themed parties, what could be better?

8. UNC-Chapel Hill’s Celebration on Franklin Street

Parades are one thing, but not many towns shut down an entire street to celebrate Halloween. Franklin Street, which is right by UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus, is one of the coolest places to be on this frightful night. On Halloween night, the town of Chapel Hill blocks off Franklin Street so college students and residents can roam the empty street. Translation? You and your friends can dress up in crazy costumes and have a few drinks (if you’re of legal age, that is).

“I've heard that it's so popular that other schools in North Carolina send busloads of students to Chapel Hill that night, although I know the police department has tried to discourage that,” says Alex Gladu, a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill and HC’s Life Editor.

According to the town of Chapel Hill’s website, this event attracts anywhere from 30,000 people (in 2013) to a whopping 80,000 attendees (in 2007). Between the large traffic this celebration receives and the ghoulish Halloween spirit, it’s no surprise that authorities have tightened up security. In 2008, Town Manager Roger L. Stancil initiated Homegrown Halloween, which strives to reduce crowd sizes and keep Franklin Street safe.

Since safety comes first and foremost, don’t be surprised if this street-wide celebration closes early or there are a lot of police officers patrolling the area—not just cute frat boys dressed up as cops!

7. Pennsylvania State University’s Pumpkin Festival

From selecting the perfect pumpkin at the patch to sketching out a spooky design to cooking pumpkin seeds, creating a jack-o’-lantern is arguably one of the best parts of Halloween. Penn State recognizes just how important carving a pumpkin is, and has dedicated a weeklong celebration to the cause. Though this event is only two years old, this annual collection of jack-o’-lantern festivities merits a spot on our coveted list.

“It’s nice that Penn State and the surrounding community of State College is offering an alternative way to celebrate the holiday rather than just by drinking,” says Erica Kasan, a senior at Penn State. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 10 or 21, Halloween can still be celebrated by everyone in a safe and fun [manner].”

In addition to refreshments, music and crafts, this school’s pumpkin festival also features a pumpkin carving competition. For a very retro twist, winners are rewarded with old-fashioned ribbons. Festive and nostalgic, a good ole carving competition is impossible to resist.

6. MIT’s Pumpkin Drop

Unless you have a knack for parabolas or physics, your ideal pre-Halloween extravaganza probably doesn’t include solving mathematical equations. But what if we told you that MIT’s highly academic event includes smashing frozen pumpkins? Um, what?

Just a few days before Halloween, students and friends watch a select group of classmates drop pumpkins off of the campus’s Green Building, which is 295 feet high. Participants are required to calculate which conditions would make the biggest splash—pun intended. After considering the height, velocity and other factors, these pumpkin smashers are required to put their calculations to the test. Whether or not you have an aptitude for science, how epic does exploding pumpkins sound?

5. UCLA’s All-Hill Halloween

While Halloween frat parties sound fun, they’re all missing one thing: candy. We may be too old to go door to door and beg for candy, but that doesn’t mean we have to outgrow the trick-or-treating spirit. Every year, more than 2,500 elementary and middle schoolers are invited to trick-to-treat all around UCLA’s campus. Instead of going from house to house, attendees go from dorm to dorm. How cute!

“UCLA has always been big about giving back to the community, and All-Hill Halloween is a great example of that,” says Ekta Partani, a senior at UCLA and a HC Campus Correspondent. “It gives these kids a chance to have a safe and fun Halloween. Plus it's absolutely adorable to see all the kids running around in their costumes!”

And when you’re stocking up on delicious sweets for your trick-or-treaters, grab a bag of Hershey’s Kisses for yourself—you deserve it.

4. Georgetown University’s Healy Howl

“Did you know that [insert movie here] was shot at this school?” asks almost every campus tour guide ever. At this point, we feel like we know it all: tidbits of 21 were filmed at Boston University, Johns Hopkins University made a cameo in The Social Network and The Five-Year Engagement was set at the University of Michigan. But did you know that parts of The Exorcist were filmed at Georgetown University? In fact, collegiettes and collegents gather every Halloween to watch the 1973 film on Copley Lawn or in Gaston Hall.

"Watching The Exorcist in Gaston Hall is something that every Georgetown student should do at least once before they graduate,” says Lacey Henry, a senior at Georgetown University and HC Campus Correspondent. “It will definitely make you think twice before using the infamous Exorcist stairs on your way down to M Street!"

Since the movie ends around midnight, students then go to the campus’s cemetery and howl at the moon when the clock strikes 12. Spooky.

3. Texas A&M’s Wicked Woods Haunted Trail

It sounds like something out of a horror movie: a group of fun-loving collegiettes take a spontaneous trip into the woods… only to discover there’s a crazed killer or supernatural creature on the loose who is out to get them. Texas A&M’s Kappa Sigma chapter is set to recreate this horrifying scene for the eighteenth year. And let’s just say this is more epic than your run-of-the-mill fraternity fundraiser. Texas A&M’s student newspaper, The Battalion, reports that this event takes months of preparation, and more than 4,000 people attend the festivities. As the fifth largest haunted trail/house in Texas, according to the fraternity’s website, this scary walk takes attendees through five acres of backwoods. Can we say scariest 15 minutes of our lives?

But before you chicken out of attending this event, don’t forget that this has a philanthropic motive. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to various charitable organizations. If it’s for charity, perhaps we can charge through this trail!

2. University of Rochester’s Scare Fair

To be perfectly honest, libraries give us the creeps: anxiety-inducing aisles, fluorescent lights and the very slim chance that a secret passageway will open as soon as you grab that book off the shelf all make us a little freaked out. So it makes perfect sense that the University of Rochester hosts its famed Scare Fair at Rush Rhees, the school’s main library. For more than 80 years, Rush Rhees has been transformed into a haunted house, which also features a scavenger hunt. And let’s just say the prize is a lot cooler than a gift card to your favorite on-campus burrito restaurant.

“Winners get to go up the old, usually restricted elevators and take a tour of Rush Rhees tower,” says Katherine Varga, a senior at the University of Rochester. “This includes walking around on the dome that overlooks campus and parts of Rochester, [which is] a big deal [because] the only other time people are allowed up there is during Senior Week.”

If spooky scavenger hunts aren’t your thing, the Scare Fair has also been known to display spiders and snakes from the Seneca Park Zoo, as well as some bands from the university. Spooky, but amazing.

1. Ohio University’s Halloween Block Party

You probably attended several block parties when you were growing up, but Ohio University’s spooky variation puts your cul-de-sac’s soiree to shame (but we’re sure your neighborhood’s version of a block party was just lovely). Located in Athens, Ohio, right by this party school’s campus, this festivity is like a costume party for you and 20,000 of your coolest friends. This year, Athens’s annual event is set to have food and art vendors as well as live music. Though the block party is a great time to get dressed up and hang out with your friends, it can get a little wild.

“Our school paper always reports the number of arrests on the front page of [the next day’s issue], and the majority of them are kids who are visiting from other schools who just wanted to get rowdy,” says Madelyn Gaither, a recent graduate from Ohio University. In 2012, The Athens Messenger reported that 80 attendees were arrested, many for alcohol-related reasons. If you decide to pack your bags and head to Ohio this year, be careful—having a rap sheet is so not collegiette-approved.
