A German Rail Company Wants to Name a Train After Anne Frank, Which Definitely Isn't the Greatest Idea

A German rail company has announced plans to name one of its new high-speed trains after author and Holocaust victim Anne Frank, The New York Times reports, and understandably, many aren't taking the news very well. Seeing as Frank and her family were deported to concentration camps via trains during World War II, naming a locomotive after her is a tad tasteless.

In September, the rail company Deutsche Bahn asked for the public to suggest historical names for its new line of trains, and a jury consisting of company employees and historians selected 25 possibilities. Out of more than 19,000 original submissions, Anne Frank, who was born in Germany before moving to the Netherlands as a child, was one of the most popular names mentioned. The shortlist included other famous Germans such as Beethoven and Einstein. In response to the news, Amsterdam's Anne Frank House, where the Jewish teenager hid with family and friends during the war, released a disapproving statement.

"The proposed naming has caused controversy, and we understand that," the museum team said. "The combination of Anne Frank and a train evokes associations with the persecution of the Jews and the deportations during the Second World War. The combination is painful for the people who experienced these deportations, and causes fresh pain to those who bear the consequences of those times within them."

While the Anne Frank House recognized that the proposed naming was meant as a symbolic honor, it also made an excellent point about Frank's name being used in an everyday, contemporary context. "Anne Frank has great symbolic power, and this has led to a multitude of manifestations, such as the naming of streets, schools and parks, but also Halloween costumes and expressions of antisemitism," the statement said. "This phenomenon is expected to only become stronger...The significance of Anne Frank will increasingly have a contemporary rather than a historical basis."

In its own statement, Deutsche Bahn essentially confirmed the Anne Frank House's point of the name selection being an honor. "It was not our intention to disrespect the memory of Anne Frank in any way whatsoever," it said. "We are very sorry if any feelings were hurt as a result of this decision. All the members of the panels agreed that it was important to honor Anne Frank as an exceptional person...DB of course takes the concerns expressed by the public seriously, and we will address them in internal discussions to follow. Jewish organizations have agreed to provide guidance."

While the general consensus seems to be that naming a train after Frank is wrong, Deutsche Bahn spokesperson Antje Neubauer told BBC News that Frank represents "peaceful co-existence of different cultures." Well, that's one way to look at it.

The new trains are expected to hit rails this December.

6 High School Clubs You Can Continue With in College

As high school winds down, you may be thinking about how much you’ll miss the friends you’ve made and the clubs you’ve gotten to call home. Don’t fret! College is just as amazing and you will most definitely find your friends and the clubs you fit into. Clubs that you may have been a part of in high school also show up in college. Here are six clubs you don’t have to say goodbye to!

1. Yearbook

You might think that college is far too large to have a yearbook to include every student. Often times, the yearbook will feature only seniors or no students at all and just have pictures of clubs, activities and events that happened throughout that school year. “I would definitely recommend getting involved with your college yearbook after doing your high school one,” says Siena College graduate Kristen Perrone. “It would be a great way to know college classmates!”

2. Student government

You may have participated in student government in high school, but in college it’s bigger than ever! “[I think] the student government at our school is pretty impressive,” says Julia*, a student at the University of California Berkeley. “We actually get to make real changes happen on the university level.” Student government in high school may have felt small and confined to just the small spaces of your high school hometown, but in universities student government is enormously influential and can actually change lives.

3. Sports teams

Was lacrosse, basketball, track or another sport your thing in high school? There’s no need to worry because sports are universal! Almost every college is bound to have the familiar sports you played in high school. If you’re not ready to commit to a college-level varsity sport, you can always do club sports or recreational sports.

4. Model UN

Model UN is very well-known across the US in both high schools and colleges. Model UN allows you to role play as a delegate to the United Nations and UN situations. You typically get to represent a country and serve in its committees and act out its unique scenarios. It’s a good extracurricular for people interested in global diplomacy and politics. It’s a great way to express your love for international relations and revel in your high school glory days.

5. Science Olympiad

This fun science competition is present in high schools all over the nation.Although you may not be competing for the gold, you can still help high school students in making their Science Olympiad competitions some of the best memories they’ll have.

“I was able to continue with Science Olympiad in high school and college,” says Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth College. “I wasn't aware that I would be able to do so, but it turned out that my college sponsors an invitational tournament with high school students in the local area and they requested student volunteers to help out, so while I won't be continuing with Science Olympiad as a competitor, I am able to stick with the activity in high school and college.”

6. Volunteer clubs

Maybe in high school, you threw yourself into helping others and volunteering as much as possible. That’s something you’ll definitely be able to continue in college. College is so much larger, and there’s so many more opportunities to volunteer. You also get to pick and choose what kinds of causes you want to volunteer for: homelessness, world hunger, healthcare, academic tutoring, etc. The possibilities to volunteer are endless! There are also fraternities and sororities that make philanthropy a huge part of their organizations. The stereotypes of sororities being all about partying is wrong; it's a great way to create a family and give back to the community.

If none of these fit you, don’t worry! Colleges have hundreds of clubs and activities you can join. You could end up in a club nothing at all like what you did in high school or in a club that you’ve been doing since middle school. That’s the beauty of college! You get to try new things and experiment with your different interests. This list of six clubs is just a fraction of what’s out there waiting for you!

HC Wake-Up Call: Puerto Rico Waste Site's Water Is Safe to Drink, Manafort Discusses Travel History & Reese's Outrageous New Candy Bar

$

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Water From a Puerto Rico Waste Site Is Safe to Drink

With about 18 percent of Puerto Rico's households still without working taps following Hurricane Maria, water pulled from a hazardous waste site's wells was been deemed drinkable on Tuesday. According to CNN, the U.S. Environmental Agency found that the water from the Dorado Groundwater Contamination Site met federal drinking water standards. Seeing as Puerto Ricans were reportedly breaking into the wells for access to water, this is definitely good news for residents still suffering from a lack of basic necessities. However, the safety measure also signifies how fragile life in Puerto Rico still is after the hurricane. The site is part of EPA's Superfund program, which works to clean the country's most contaminated land.

New Details on Manafort & Gates' Hearing Reveal Travel Records & Net Worths

Following former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort turning himself in when facing indictment, a new court filing has revealed that Manafort has three differently numbered passports and has previously filed 10 passport applications. In a hearing alongside Rick Gates, Manafort also revealed that this year alone, he has traveled to Mexico, China and Ecuador with a phone and email account under a fake name. Both men also confirmed frequent travel to Cyprus. Additionally, Gates has "frequently opened and closed bank accounts," reportedly beginning 55 accounts with 13 different institutions. Both men are still under house arrest despite their lawyers asking for a lift of the arrest. They both claim to be not guilty and face possible sentences of more than 10 years if found responsible for all charges.

Reese's Takes Its Candy Bar One Step Further

Halloween may be over, but when you're trolling stores for discounted candy this week, remember that by next year there could be a new must-have candy. Reese's will release a new candy bar next May called Reese's Outrageous, which will contain Reese's Pieces and a peanut butter and caramel core inside its outer layer of standard chocolate. That's a whole lot of delicious goodness for one bar.

What to look out for...

Today begins a brand new month, and while November has the tendency to be a little cold and dull until Thanksgiving comes around, there's actually a reason to celebrate all month long. November is known as Peanut Butter Lovers Month, AKA your early Christmas if PB & J is literally your favorite thing.

My Eating Disorder Was Taking Away from My College Experience, So I Chose Recovery

Content warning: contains discussion of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa and orthorexia

When I started college, I was 18 years old and 2,000 miles away from home. I was also struggling with depression, anxiety, fear of many specific foods, horrible body image, severely low self-esteem and undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). My family and I had no idea that all of these factors put together had a likely ending. We learned soon after that it was anorexia nervosa and orthorexia.

For some context, I had spent the six years prior trying to mold my body into something that other people would approve of. When I was 12 years old, my period started and I went from 90 lbs to 130 lbs in one school year. My body was dramatically different and it felt like it happened overnight. The sudden lack of control took a severe toll on my mental health, which only became more complicated throughout middle and high school. I spent my teenage years trying every fad diet, counting calories, pushing myself to over-exercise and developing very high-functioning, severe, comorbid mental illnesses.

During my first week living in the on-campus dorms, my roommate started to make comments about my weight and my body. I can’t say that I was surprised, because I had been bullied a decent amount in high school, but the situation was inescapable. We lived in the same tiny room. As the school year progressed, friends and neighbors would tell me that she had been talking about me to them, even going as far as to talk about my weight. By the middle of the semester, I had lost 20 pounds. Her criticisms switched to how “sickly” I looked. By the time I went home for winter break, I was 30 pounds lighter.

My hair would come out in clumps when I brushed it. I fainted more times than I can count. I experienced some of the scariest sleep paralysis episodes I could ever imagine. I turned down dinner invitations, skipped out on events that I couldn’t wear oversized clothes to, and watched my classmates have the college experience that I thought that I would have.

It took me three years to choose recovery.

And each year, I felt more and more alone on a campus with thousands of students. I wish that I had known that I wasn’t.

During my junior year, I had an assessment at a treatment center near my school. Seven months of intensive treatment later, I moved home for a semester. What I learned from my experience is that taking a break from school is heartbreaking at the moment that it’s happening, but it is the best thing you will ever do for yourself. Your education will always be waiting for you, and if not at the college you attend, then somewhere else. I will always feel sad that I lost three years of my college experience to my eating disorder. I will never regret sacrificing one year of my college experience for recovery.

To anyone who is currently in a similar situation: Recovery is real.

Related: How I Conquered My Eating Disorder In College

I think that as an eating disorder recovery advocate, it is immensely important to speak my truth on how I genuinely have no issues with my body––or any body––and to educate others about fatphobia.  However, for people with eating disorders whose primary symptoms are fear of weight gain, negative body image, and little to no love for themselves, I cannot get through to them without owning the girl that I used to be. While I may feel completely different now about weight and body expectations, I will never deny the fact that I spent half of my life afraid of weight gain. It is vital that I keep myself from sounding as though any of this was easy, or that I didn’t have to forgive myself over and over again for who I once was, or that unlearning my negative body image didn’t take years. I have been there––I remember the days where I thought that I would absolutely never get better, that all I could do was act like I was better so that people would leave me alone, that there was no reason to try getting better because it was the only life that I knew for so long, and believing that it was truly impossible for my way of living to genuinely change.

I wish that I had gotten help sooner. There are so many moments that I don’t remember, so many photos that were taken with no memory tied to them, so many classes that I gained little to nothing from because all of my mental energy was spent on anorexia, orthorexia, OCD, depression and the belief that if I tried hard enough, I could manipulate my body to become something that it isn’t, and that it would somehow bring me peace.

I am now 22 years old, have no idea how much I weigh, healthily manage my mental illnesses, and have never felt so alive. Since choosing recovery, I have discovered talents and passions that I never knew existed. I have a life to live that I don’t want to lose, and the best part about it is that I nourish my body and have gratitude for it too. I hope that you choose to put your trust in recovery someday, and I hope that day is soon. You deserve to truly live, not just survive.

5 Reasons Why You Might Want to Use Birth Control Even if You've Never Had Sex

$

0

With the recent politicization of reproductive rights and fears about the defunding of Planned Parenthood, words such as “abortion” and even “sex” remain controversial. But these words and their implications should not be taboos—and neither should birth control. The purpose of birth control is often considered as solely preventing pregnancy, but that’s not the only reason why you might be taking the pill. A 2011 study from the Guttmacher Institute shows that 58 percent of pill users use the pill for at least one purpose other than pregnancy prevention, with 31 percent of the 58 percent using birth control methods for cramps or menstrual pain.

Dr. Ana G. Cepin, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University and director at the New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Family Planning Clinic, says that it’s important to know that birth control is not a catch-all term. There are more options than just the Pill. “Birth control has long acting methods, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs), injections, implants, as well as the pill, the patch, and the ring,” she says. “All of these methods have potential benefits outside of just contraception.”

All of these methods also have different frequencies (e.g. while birth control pills must be taken every day, the ring is applied once per month). Regardless of the form, here are a few non-contraceptive reasons why you might want to use birth control.

1. It helps with irregular periods

Dr. Beverly Gray is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center and the director of the Ryan Family Planning Clinic. She finds that the main reasons patients use birth control for non-contraceptive purposes is due to problematic menstrual cycles. “Many women with irregular menstrual cycles may not be ovulating regularly,” she says. “By manipulating their menstrual cycles with hormones, you can normalize cycles.”

While the average menstrual cycle is 28 days long, cycles can range from 21 to 35 days. If your cycle is shorter than 21 days, it is considered to be irregular. “Women who have irregular, heavy, or painful periods might benefit from a hormonal method,” Dr. Cepin says. “These methods all work by stopping ovulation, so you don’t have the cyclic hormonal changes women have, which may be beneficial, for example, for patients with migraines associated with their periods.” If your period is irregular, normalizing it will help to stabilize some of the negative symptoms you experience around that time of month.

Samantha Burke, a graduate of Siena University, has found the pill to be a huge help with her periods. “It brought my period from 7+ days to 3-4, and starting my pack on the right day meant that I never had my period on a weekend!”

During the first month after starting birth control, you may experience some negative side effects, but as long as you’re prepared for them, you should be fine!

2. It can stop your period

You may want to stop your period for a number of reasons. One major patient group that wishes to do so is transgender men (those that were assigned female sex at birth and identify as men). If they don’t wish to have their menstrual periods, they should follow the same methods as cisgender women who wish to stop their periods, temporarily or otherwise.

Dr. Gray cares for transgender male patients who may still be menstruating. “There are times where I will use contraceptives to stop periods for that patient population,” she says. “The birth control methods we typically use to help stop periods are the hormonal IUD, Depo-Provera (contraceptive injection), or taking birth control pills continually (skipping the placebo pills).”

These methods can also be used for a cisgender woman who might want to stop her period. “Women might want to avoid having a cycle for convenience — for instance, going on a trip,” says Dr. Gray. “They may also have significant PMS symptoms or menstrual migraines that could be avoided by skipping cycles.”

A common concern about doing this is that it’ll affect a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Dr. Gray says that that’s not the case. “Birth control pill use does not impact fertility.” So, if you’re interested in suppressing or stopping your period for any reason, however, the first step is reaching out to your doctor.

3. It reduces pain during periods

There can come a time, especially for some women, where dark chocolate and heating pads cannot decrease the debilitating pain they experience during their periods.

Dysmenorrhea, also known as painful periods, is the most common menstrual disorder, with over 50 percent of women experiencing pain during at least 1-2 days of their period, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dysmenorrhea is often caused largely by high levels of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body with hormone-like qualities. As their level increases in the lining of the uterus, pain tends to occur; however, as the lining is shed, the pain decreases. Birth control methods, such as the pill and the IUD, that contain estrogen and progestin hormones can help treat dysmenorrhea.

“The methods that work the best to help with painful periods would stop your period - the hormonal IUD and the injection,” Dr. Cepin says. “With the pill, the patch, and the ring, since your bleeding is lighter, cramping also tends to be lighter. These medicines can be taken in a continuous way where there is no withdrawal bleed - so you may not get your period - if you take that way under the supervision of a physician.”

Birth control pills with low doses of estrogen can help to stabilize your estrogen levels because when one’s estrogen levels fall, migraines can occur. However, the pill has different effects on every user. If you’re finding that your migraines are getting worse, talk to your doctor about switching to a different type of birth control pill.

Your pain may be more severe. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium, a layer of tissue that covers the inside of the uterus, grows outside of the uterus. This leads to pain, especially during menstruation. “For women who have endometriosis or pain with their menstrual cycles due to other reasons, hormonal birth control methods can decrease the amount of menstrual blood and the size of endometriosis implants,” Dr. Gray says. “It [hormonal birth control] decreases the inflammatory process that occurs in menstrual cycles that can increase pain and discomfort.”

Birth control isn’t a cure for endometriosis, but it can help with discomfort, cramping, and pain.

4. It decreases acne and excessive body hair growth

Breakouts are caused by many factors, but changes in your hormones are near the top of the list.

As a result, the birth control pill is great for helping with hormonal acne and body hair growth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, androgens, male sex hormones, can cause acne by triggering oil glands in the skin. “Pills with decreased androgenic activity help decrease the level of androgens in our system, which tends to improve both acne and abnormal hair growth,” says Dr. Cepin.

Not all birth control methods are effective for treating acne, however. “Combined birth control methods can be used as a treatment for abnormal hair growth (hirsutism),” Dr. Gray says. “They increase the sex hormone binding globulin, which binds to the testosterone that circulates in a woman’s bloodstream. This has the effect of decreasing hair growth.” While your hair that’s already there won’t go, it can prevent future hair growth. In fact, according to Dr. Gray, “some birth control pills are used specifically for this purpose: “combination” oral contraceptives, that contain both estrogen and progesterone.”

If you want to get rid of a sudden breakout, getting on birth control might not be your go-to; there are some simpler options.

Emily Schmidt, a sophomore at Stanford University, has been taking the Pill for the past six weeks to treat hormonal acne. “I’ve already seen an improvement,” she says. “I used to get terrible hormonal acne on my chin and T-zone but fewer infections have developed before my last two periods.” However, if you want to treat hormonal acne without birth control, there are plenty of other ways as well that you might consider.

5. It helps treat PCOS, PMS, and PMDD

More serious medical health issues can also be treated by birth control methods. One issue that can be treated is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that’s diagnosed for women with irregular menstrual cycles, a lack of menstrual cycles, or signs of excess male hormones. “If women don’t have any other medical issues that would be causing these issues, they receive a diagnosis of PCOS.”

“PCOS is not something birth control can necessarily treat, but birth control methods can help to manage some of the possible complications,” Dr. Cepin says. “One complication of PCOS is not knowing when or how heavy your period will be. Additionally, if you don’t bleed for a prolonged period of time, an abnormal growth of cells that line the uterus can develop, leading to uterine cancer. Taking methods that help regulate your bleeding is very important for women with PCOS.”

Mood changes from PMS and PMDD, a more extreme version of PMS, are caused by hormonal fluctuations right before or during the placebo week. “All methods that stop ovulation - the pill, the patch, the ring and injections - can help improve PMS symptoms, because your normal cycling of hormones is not occurring,” Dr. Cepin says. “A continuous birth control pill can help skip the side effects. Women who take a birth control with a shorter placebo period have fewer PMS symptoms.”

Birth control has expanded women’s opportunities, providing them with more stability and power in their lives. At times, however, there seems to be a negative connotation associated with birth control. Dr. Cepin believes that it’s less of a stigma and more of misconceptions around a lot of birth control methods.

“Women who are in need of contraception for contraceptive reasons should use it regardless,” she advises. “Women not in need of contraception but who have medical conditions should certainly do so under the advice and management of their physician or care provider.”

Moreover, birth control has different effects on every individual that uses it. The non-contraceptive benefits—a decreased risk of ovarian cancer, more controlled bleeding, reduced risk of period migraines, protection of the uterus—vary from method to person. As always, be sure to consult with your doctor about what’s best for you!

We should support all women’s decisions of whether or not they chose to use birth control. In this multi-factored decision making process, it’s important to be aware of your options and what your choices are—and that these options and choices continue to exist for all women.

Is Lady Gaga Secretly Engaged to Boyfriend Christian Carino?

Lady Gaga has been dating Christian Carino since February, and according to Us Weekly, the couple is secretly engaged! But is it true?

Us claims the 48-year-old talent agent asked Gaga's father for permission before proposing to her over the summer. However, Gossip Cop, a site known for debunking celebrity rumors, says this is false. "We’re exclusively assured it’s simply 'untrue,'" the site reported, adding that they checked in with a representative from Gaga's team.

Based on how long Gaga's previous relationship lasted, I'm not sure how likely it is that she'd get engaged so soon. The pop star was engaged to actor Taylor Kinney and dated him for five years before they broke up in July 2016. Gaga has kept her current relationship under wraps, so it'd be hard to know if she and Carino are even thinking about marriage.

For now, Lady Gaga is focused on her health. The singer suffers from fibromyalgia and had to cancel the European leg of her Joanne World Tour because of severe pain. She also canceled her Rock in Rio performance after being hospitalized with symptoms caused by the chronic disease.

We may not know for sure if Lady Gaga is engaged, but regardless, I wish her the best with her relationship and her health.

Blake Lively's latest movie, All I See Is You, sees her character navigating her complicated marriage after regaining her eyesight. The movie, which was released Oct. 27, has a beautiful soundtrack that Blake actually sang on! If you heard the songs but didn't recognize her voice, take another listen.

The soundtrack was released last week and features Blake on two songs: "In Our Dreams" and "Double Dutch." As if it wasn't hard enough to play a blind woman, Lively also took on the task of going into the studio to sing for director Marc Forster. According to Vanity Fair, "Forster had no idea whether Lively could sing when he cast her and figured, worst case scenario, he could always dub someone else’s voice for the song. That ended up not being necessary." Even Babyface, who owns the studio they recorded in, said Blake didn't need any help with her singing.

Lively also helped incorporate her character's song into the story, making an impact on the movie outside of just acting.

All I See is You is in select theaters now.

The release of Season 2 of Stranger Things had everyone at the edge of their beds, clicking through episode after episode and dreading the suspense. But Niall Horan was…behind his pillow?

"So I started 'stranger things' last night and hid behind a pillow for 55 mins . Jesus that's intense," he tweeted Tuesday.

Fifty-five minutes is a long time, but who's counting, right? I have to admit the show is pretty thrilling. Hawkins has been through it when it comes to supernatural happenings and terrifying events. But come on. It can't be that bad!

Niall's former One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson had a similar thought. He responded to Niall's tweet with a screenshot of an article titled "Is 'Stranger Things' Too Scary for Kids?" He captioned his tweet, "should have read this before hand lad !"

Niall can't be too happy about the over 46,000 retweets of Louis's burn! Who knew Louis was so funny? "Niall is lovely, Zayn has the voice, Harry is cool, Liam gets the crowd going… then there’s me," he told The Guardian in June. Well, there's nothing forgettable about this.

Joining in on the banter, the Stranger Things Twitter account commented with a single GIF to get followers laughing.

Looks like you lost this one, Niall. Spoiler alert: You can still hear what's going on in the show if you cover your face with a pillow.

Eight People Were Arrested At Milo Yiannapoulos' Cal State Talk While Other Students Held Alternative Events & Protests

At least eight people were arrested Tuesday night during small but emotionally and politically charged protests as inflammatory conservative speaker Milo Yiannopoulos spoke at Cal State Fullerton, reportsthe LA Times.

Yiannopoulos' main point throughout the evening was taking aim at college campuses he claimed were suppressing conservative views.

University spokesman Jeff Cook said on Twitter that at least two of the people were arrested when a fight broke out between left-wing protesters and right-wing counter-protesters. Another woman, wearing a black mask and helmet, was also reportedly arrested after shooting pepper spray into the air and allegedly encouraging other protesters to harm Yiannopoulos during his event.

Other protesters stood together holding signs and chanted things like "Black lives matter," and "Cops and the Klan go hand in hand." Meanwhile, a nearby “Unity Block Party” hosted by students was peaceful and featured speakers from the LGBTQ community and immigrants.

College Republicans of Cal State Fullerton hosted the event at the Titan Student Union. It sold out and the audience contained more than 800 people.

Yiannopoulos reportedly began the night by taking the stage to cheering and attendees chanting his name. The first item on his agenda was sexual assault in Hollywood in light of the many allegations that have emerged in recent times. His focus soon shifted to conservative speech on campus, however, and he called for the federal government to withhold funding from universities that, in his opinion, try to shut down conservative speech.

“When it comes to oppressed minorities and marginalized groups, there’s no tribe in America at greater risk — the physical and existential risk — than the campus conservative,” he said.

As the evening went on, shouting broke out while Yiannopoulos spoke. Around 7 p.m., someone threw a water bottle at an attendee wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. The university police were out in full force for the entirety of the event, pulling in extra help from several nearby agencies. They monitored various situations outside using everything from helicopters to officers on horseback. At around 8 p.m. about 150 people in a more disruptive crowd were dispersed after they got close to a university library. Aside from one woman seeking treatment from firefighters, there were no other injuries reported at the event.

While Yiannopoulos is a highly controversial figure, however, the university’s administration stated that they don't have any involvement in deciding which speakers student groups can and cannot invite to campus.

The event Tuesday was Yiannopoulos’ first college-speaking event in the U.S. since his highly-publicized “Berkeley Free Speech Week” fell apart as a result of disorganization. He blamed UC Berkeley officials for trying to stop him from coming to campus. He’s not done in the U.S. by any stretch of the imagination, organizing speaking events across the country that he calls the “Troll Academy Tour.”

Democrats Are Set To File New Articles Of Impeachment Against Trump & They Want To Do It By Thanksgiving

A growing number of Democrats reportedly plan to file articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump before Thanksgiving, Representative Luis Gutierrez told The Hill on Tuesday. Gutierrez is a democratic representative from Illinois whose district includes heavily Hispanic parts of Chicago. And, of course, articles of impeachments are lists of charges brought against a president to begin the lengthy impeachment process.

“It is clear to us that he is unfit to be president of the United States of America,” Gutierrez also told The Hill. He did not provide The Hill with specific details about what the articles of impeachment will include, but he did say that they have plenty of reasons to address. Guitierrez has long been a critic of Trump, as The Chicago Sun Timesnotes, and has consistently criticized the President's tendency to act like a bully.

The specific democrats planning to file the articles of impeachment with Rep. Gutierrez are also unknown. However, It was leaked to The Tennessean that Democratic Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee is a part of the initiative.

According to The Tennessean, Rep. Cohen previously announced plans to file articles of impeachment against Trump over his comments blaming “both sides” after the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. He also told The Tennessean that Trump’s foreign business dealing and firings of former FBI director James Comey could serve as proof of other wrongdoings by the president. These previous comments shed some more light onto who and what may be involved in filing the articles of impeachment.

Many democrats want to wait until the Russian investigations are fully concluded before moving forward in filing any articles of impeachment, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a democrat from California, according to The Hill. They believe that the outcome of the investigation may provide further grounds for impeachment and would better solidify their case.

However, Gutierrez believes that there is no time to wait. He wants more democrats to work together towards substantial articles of impeachment. “I appreciate what single members have done,” Gutierrez told the Hill, but emphasized the importance of taking on impeachment as a group.

It should be an interesting next couple of months as political tensions in Washington, D.C. and across the country continue to grow — particularly if talk of impeachment kicks up before the holidays.

John Kelly Actually Said The Civil War Was About 'A Lack Of Ability To Compromise'& Like WTF

Do any of you remember learning about the Civil War in your American History class? Yes? Then what was the Civil War fought over? If you answered “slavery”, then congratulations! You’re familiar with one of the most basic concepts in American history.

Unfortunately, White House chief of staff John Kelly did not win at this game of “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth-Grader.” On Laura Ingraham’s show Monday night, Kelly stated that, “the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War.” Excuse me, but...what?

Here’s some context: Remember over the summer when cities started removing their Confederate statues and all hell broke loose? A white supremacist rally occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue, and a woman protesting white supremacy was killed. Trump famously responded by saying, “I think there is blame on both side. You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.”

Now, the topic has come back up, and Kelly isn’t doing too hot of a job at reassuring the public that the White House is, in fact, anti-racism. In addition to claiming that the Civil War was due to a “lack of an ability to compromise”, he called Robert E. Lee “an honorable man who gave up his country to fight for his state,” and alleged that “men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand.” Standing where your conscience makes you stand is all well and good on topics that are worthy of debate, but it’s disturbing that he claims that you can be “of good faith” and against the abolition of slavery.

The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah decided to give Kelly a quick history lesson Tuesday night, sarcastically quipping, “You know what? John Kelly is right. There are a lot of despicable things in history that were accepted at that time that we don’t accept today. We can’t change that. Like Crocs. It happened. But not all things in history are equally excusable—like slavery. Because you realize, even at the time, half of America was against slavery. We know this because they fought a war.”

Jokes aside, this is an extremely weighty topic. Many people cite the Civil War as a prime example of the federal government infringing upon states’ rights, and, in that sense, it was fought over a “lack of ability to compromise.” The Confederacy wanted to secede from the Union—that’s also a basic fact from American history. But this doesn’t give us any reason to erect statues honoring Confederate “heroes”, and it especially doesn’t give us reason to ignore the atrocities that occurred in the Old South.

The fact is, the Confederacy wanted to secede because they were against the abolition of slavery. They wanted to continue to own slaves, and if the United States couldn’t “compromise” on whether they could own slaves, they didn’t want to be a part of the United States. So while there’s nothing wrong with advocating for states’ rights, using the Civil War as an example is extremely dangerous because it values the rights of the states over the rights over the rights of the people who were being held as slaves.

When Kelly states that the Civil War was fought over a “lack of ability to compromise”, he implies that the United States should have compromised on slavery instead of fighting a war over it. In today’s racial climate, we should be incredibly careful that we use our words only to promote a culture of love and acceptance. Anything that even borderline justifies slavery is about a million steps backwards. As Bernice King, MLK’s daughter tweeted, “It’s irresponsible & dangerous, especially when white supremacists feel emboldened, to make fighting to maintain slavery sound courageous.”

'This Is Us' Summed Up All of Us in Our 20s, No Matter Who We Are

Although the Halloween episode of This Is Us turned out to be more of a chapter in Rebecca’s story than the Big Three’s (I’m billing Mandy Moore for my new Kleenex budget, btw), “The 20's” proved that regardless of the time period, everyone is totally lost in this decade of life. Leading up to this double flashback episode, I somehow underestimated that the grown kids would be equally consumed by their own adult concerns and their individual feelings left over from the loss of Jack about a decade ago. Such a balance displayed that the life-altering moments of your teens can shape your twenties to the point of feeling stuck in the past when you’re supposed to be molding your future. As Rebecca said, the “middle” part of life can be the hardest.

“The 20's” revealed that in 2008, Randall was anticipating the birth of Tess, Kate was a waitress caught up in a flirtation with a married man, and Kevin’s career was such a mess that he tried to steal his friend’s part in a movie. Although a devout This Is Us fan knows that anxiety-prone Randall was a wreck leading up to his firstborn’s arrival, his siblings seemed to subtly envy his settled life with a wife and a house. Kevin and Kate represented what most of our twenties are filled with: uncertainty, rejection, and a desperation that, on our good days, we can mask as motivation.

While Kate was still somewhat of a novice in romance, Kevin had been married and divorced after what was basically his only serious relationship. We all know the girl who hasn’t had much luck with love and is still struggling to find a good partner in her twenties. Kate summed up this fruitless search with a comment that I could easily apply to any aspect of my twenties, telling her married conquest, “I’m just tired of waiting for things to feel right, and nothing has felt right in a long time.” Girl, preach.

Kate has faced struggle in some way or another throughout her life, but things have come fairly easily to Kevin (based on what we’ve seen—we’ve yet to see his immediate reaction to Jack’s death). In this episode, Kevin was basically the star athlete or popular girl next door who finally left school and realized that they couldn’t use their natural charm to win over the world. It can be a rude awakening to suddenly face an environment that you can’t easily manipulate. As Kate looked for romantic validation, Kevin desperately sought professional success, which, as we saw in a past episode, was the only means of work he had left after he was forced to end his time as an athlete.

For people in their twenties, society emphasizes huge career success and a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love, but as both the 2008 and present-day versions of Kevin and Kate prove, achieving at least one of these is no small feat. Being 28 in 2008, the two reminded young viewers that there is no shame in being this lost so close to the milestone of 30 years old.

However, when Kevin and Kate joined their family to celebrate Tess’s birth, Randall was viewed as the picture of perfect adulthood. They marveled over the size of his house and joked about him having sex “at least once,” as if they wanted to remind themselves that they had more confidence than Randall during childhood. To an outsider, Randall looked like he had all that we aspire toward, but his storyline particularly spoke for those in their twenties who may have settled down early but now face the mature decisions and lifestyles that many people their age may not understand. Randall may have “had it all,” but he also had extreme anxiety about becoming a father, and having neither his biological nor adoptive father in the picture definitely didn’t help his nerves.

Life doesn’t become easier once someone has achieved that trifecta of love, babies and career. Then again, if you didn’t know that after watching this show, you’re clearly missing a big message. Maybe you’re a Kate who wants partnership or a Kevin who wants public recognition. Maybe you’re the Randall, who has always had everything figured out despite how terrifying it is to you. There’s no definite or normal path for your twenties to take, but the common theme that This Is Us emphasized is a kind of wonder about whether things can get better beyond this point.

7 Places to Shop for Affordable Yet Jaw-Droppingly Gorgeous Lingerie

Whether it’s for impressing yourself or for impressing your SO, beautiful lingerie serves as an awesome expression of the beauty of our bodies. So, when we want to up the ante on our lingerie game, we shouldn’t have to spend tons of money to look and feel fierce and fabulous! Here’s our list of the best online and retail shops to find the most expensive-looking yet affordable lingerie pieces:

Victoria's Secret

Victoria’s Secret is probably the first brand that pops into your head when you think of ‘fancy’ lingerie. However, Victoria Secret’s regular prices for lingerie usually range pretty high due to the big brand’s maintenance of high style and quality. But when VS is holding a sale, you can bet you’ll find those same high-quality pieces for a fraction of the price! “For underwear, Victoria’s Secret is honestly not bad, especially when they’re doing 7/27,” says Hannah, a sophomore at the University of Michigan. The store has its fair share of sales, so you can grab those fancy bras at a discount, or have a huge haul from their seven panties for $27 sale!

La Senza

Did you know Victoria’s Secret actually has a more affordable yet still just as cute sister? An originally Canada-based brand, La Senza is a lingerie brand owned by the same company as Victoria’s Secret. La Senza features beautiful pieces at cheaper prices than its family brand, Victoria’s Secret. While La Senza’s lingerie showcases a slightly bolder cut and style even in their simpler pieces, the price difference between them and VS is practically a steal. Ashley, a sophomore at Ohio University, says that “La Senza is a lot like Victoria's Secret, but the lingerie is a little more risque and cheaper so it's a great alternative option”. La Senza’s first retail store in the states is in Columbus, Ohio, but if you don’t live nearby, you can order from them online, with free shipping on all US orders! Major. Steal.

aerie

American Eagle’s aerie brand has some seriously pretty intimates that are super affordable! Their pieces are simple, but with a good hunt through the store and online store, you can find lingerie pieces that have a high-end feel while still being comfortable for everyday wear! Hannah agrees, “When VS doesn’t have a sale, aerie is a little bit cheaper than them and they have really nice stuff!” Aerie’s lingerie comes in simple yet sophisticated styles that will make you feel beautifully put together, without splitting your wallet!

Altur.

Sometimes we just want to channel our inner diva with an especially sexy, high-end looking piece of lingerie. Look no further as this online store, Altur., has got you uncovered with bold and sexy pieces that’ll make you feel like a million bucks! Altur. is an online store that specializes in sexy lingerie, creating pieces with exclusive detailing that mimics what you would get a super high-end boutique. “Their styles are [sometimes] 2 for $20! [Their pieces are] totally in line with this whole new “layering corsets/lingerie” trend,” says Erica, a junior at Hunter College. “It’s kind of intimidating, wearing casual BDSM gear for fashion, but it’s super sexy and anyone can style it. They look great under loose shirts and over tight dresses,” Erica says.  If you’re feeling more adventurous with your lingerie choices or just want something a little more ‘special’ then check out Altur.

Fashion Nova

Online stores like Fashion Nova have changed the intimates game, for sure. Fashion Nova is one of the most affordable options for buying gorgeous lingerie at awesomely low prices. The store has a wide selection of pieces with a variety of styles, making it perfect for anyone with a certain taste for a certain design, cut or fit. Kelisha, a junior at the University of Central Florida, loves the brand’s eye for simplicity. “I like Fashion Nova because the designs are stylish yet simple. They use solid colors instead of using giant logos, and it’s more about how the material looks,” Kelisha says.

Nordstrom Rack

Nordstrom is another brand that we typically think of as ‘high-end,’ but their Nordstrom Rack stores have plenty items that are just as sophisticated as the original Nordstrom’s store’s inventory, their lingerie being no exception! Nordstrom Rack’s sales usually markdown lingerie for as cheap as $15. Their selection is also a lot more diverse than you might think, featuring a mix of everyday intimates and more risqué lingerie sets. Try stopping by a Nordstrom Rack store or checking them out online for lingerie that’s both fierce as well as budget-friendly.

Forever 21

Good ol’ Forever 21 has had our backs for a while when it comes to making fashionable clothes for everyday wear. Cool clothes aren’t the only thing our favorite department has going for it, as their intimates are super trendy as well as super cheap! Forever 21 has a range of pieces that all have a different vibe to them, so we give them props for their diverse collection! When Forever 21 has a sale or a clearance, their cute bras, panties and lingerie sets can be as cheap as $4! With prices that low, you could stock up on a whole collection of fancy lingerie without spending tons of money.

There’s something truly empowering about dressing in elegant lingerie; to feel beautiful in your own body and own your sexuality is a priceless feeling, but that doesn’t mean you have to pay a high price to feel fierce, bold and beautiful!

21 Understandably Insane Thoughts I Had While Watching Season 2 of 'Stranger Things'

$

After more than a year, Netflix has brought Stranger Things back for a second season! Ever since the trailer dropped this summer, I've been pretty much counting down the days until I could find out what happened to Eleven and the gang. Now that it's back, I thought I'd share some of my thoughts and ~musings~ on what the sleepy little town of Hawkins, Indiana is up to. Major spoilers lie ahead—continue at your own risk!

1. Okay, first thought: Will Barb finally get the justice she deserves?

2. How is this show so aesthetically gorgeous?

3. Why are Steve and Nancy still together?

4. I don't care if it's the '80s—mullets and all-jean outfits are never acceptable.

5. Eleven looks good with a shag, though!

6. Is it bad that I want to raid every character's closet?

7. What the heck is in Dustin's trash?

8. Oh no, ew. What even is that thing? A polly what, now?

9. Wow, that new guy is garbage. Can we get the Demogorgon to eat him, too?

10. Is it me, or is Eleven actually a brat?

11. Not even gonna comment on the end of episode four.

12. Nope.

13. Crazy theory: Is Eleven actually the Demogorgon?

14. Another theory: What if…Chief Hopper is Eleven's dad? I know, I know—it's a stretch. But wouldn't that be adorable?

15. I'd honestly just be happy if Joyce and Hopper got together. You know it'd be a perfect match.

16. Because no offense, but her current beau is boooring. Nice, but dull as a plastic knife.

17. Is Will even still Will? I have a bad feeling about this.

18. Thank God Eleven got to meet her mom. I'm not crying, you're crying!

19. Jonathan and Nancy are just so amazing. Takin' on the C.I.A. all by themselves and all that jazz.

20. Also, Joyce Byers is the actual definition of a BAMF. I think we all need to strive to be a little more like Joyce.

21. Well, I have a couple more episodes to go, but so far, it's been a heck of a wild, awesome ride.

Keep Calm, Because Beyoncé Has Joined the Live Action Remake of 'The Lion King'

It's been over a year since Disney confirmed its live action remake of The Lion King, and while the company has since released some casting news (including James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa), the casting announcement of the year has proven any prior info as irrelevant. You my have been excited before about Donald Glover as Simba or Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, but PEOPLE reports that Beyoncé will voice Simba's love interest Nala. Well, The Lion King has already surpassed all of the other Disney remakes, hasn't it?

Walt Disney Studios announced the addition of Beyoncé and other cast members in a tweet on Wednesday, also confirming the film's release on July 19, 2019.

Also just joining the cast of the anticipated remake is Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar. Alfre Woodard as Simba's mother Sarabi, Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon and John Oliver as Zazu had been previously announced.

Following the success of his live action remake of The Jungle Book, Jon Favreau will direct the new film and incorporate the same kind of performance-capture technology to create the animal characters. While we won't actually see Beyoncé and the rest of this incredible cast onscreen, I'm confident that Beyoncé's vocals in a musical number will be well worth an admission price. Obviously, I'm not the only one to think so.

Basically, no matter how grim things may seem, keep this amazing news in mind. As always, Beyoncé has saved the day.

The Suspect in the Manhattan Terror Attack Has Been Charged After Planning the Attack for a Year

Following Tuesday afternoon's vehicular terror attack in Lower Manhattan that killed eight people, the suspect has been charged with federal terrorism offenses, CNN reports. 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov has been charged with "providing material support to ISIS and violence and destruction of motor vehicles."

The attack's official tie to ISIS was discovered when a handwritten note in both Arabic and English was found in the area, saying that the Islamic State would endure. Appearing in federal court on Wednesday, Saipov, an Uber driver, confirmed that the attack was inspired by ISIS videos, 90 of which were found on his cell phone. John Miller, NYPD deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, said of the ISIS influence, "He appears to have followed almost exactly to a 'T' the instructions that ISIS has put out in its social media channels before."

Officials say that the attack had been planned a year in advance, but Saipov decided to utilize a truck only two months ago, following a pattern of vehicular terror attacks seen in Europe this year. According to a federal criminal complaint, he chose to use a truck to "inflict maximum damage against civilians." The decision to act on Halloween was to ensure that more people would be out on the streets. While Saipov presumably acted alone, a fellow Uzbek native believed to be associated with him is currently being questioned about the attack.

Meanwhile, Saipov's victims have been identified as two American men, a Belgian woman and five Argentinian friends celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this horrible time.
