Simone Biles Had a Savage Response for This Troll Who Called Her a Bad Role Model

Even a five-time Olympic medalist can’t catch a break when it comes to internet trolls.

Simone Biles, also known as owner of four gold medals in gymnastics, shut down an online heckler who accused her of being a bad role model. After Simone posted a vacation picture on Instagram, the troll commented, "Seems like u have partied non stop for a year #trash #unfollow #suckyassrolemodel."

A post shared by Simone Biles (@simonebiles) on

Simone has been taking time away from the sport, and she's certainly earned it. Her 14 World Championship medals, in addition to her Rio 2016 hardware, were all won before she turned 20—and she's the first and only female gymnast to have ever won three back-to-back World Championships.

So of course, she had to reply to the unwarranted comment and defend her years of dedication to the sport. She wrote, "talk to me when you train for 14 years and earn 5 Olympic Medals. I think kids would say otherwise. My year off is well deserved! Take a couple seats."

Simone also showcased her reply on Twitter, writing, "Comments like this have me shook. I really wanted to blur her name out so she doesn't get attention. but it is what it is..."

Twitter responded with an outpouring of support.

After becoming the most decorated gymnast in American history (and killing it on Dancing With the Stars), Simone should be commended for her hard work and dedication, but also for prioritizing self-care by taking time off when needed.

Laurie Hernandez Shares Her Secret to Smelling Fresh & Talks About What's Next

At 17 years old, Laurie Hernandez is a supremely accomplished teenager. Last summer, she caught global attention as part of the USA women’s gymnastics team at the Olympics, winning a gold medal during the team event and a silver medal for her balance beam routine. As such an active athlete and adolescent, Laurie is all too familiar with the unpleasant odors that accompany being a gymnast—which makes her the perfect spokeswoman for Febreze’s “I Love You, But Sometimes You Stink” campaign. In our exclusive interview, Laurie shares her thoughts on what makes Febreze’s latest OdorClear technology so innovative, how she balances her busy athletic schedule with her education and her plans for the future.

Laurie was five years old when she first became interested in gymnastics. “I was just sitting at home and I saw a gymnast on the TV and I realized that's what I wanted to do,” she recalls. Her parents, Anthony and Wanda, were more than happy to support Laurie’s new interest, and she soon began taking classes in her New Jersey neighborhood.

“I think at that age, if I would have picked gymnastics, soccer—whatever sport or whatever hobby it was—they definitely would have supported me through that, so I’m really grateful to them,” Laurie says.

Growing up in the Hernandez household with two siblings who also participated in sports, Laurie admits there were times when picture frames were accidentally broken and smelly shoes became the norm. Regardless, Laurie’s parents were always supportive of her participation in gymnastics.

“In 2012, I was 12 years old, it was my first time making Elite Nationals and I went, I fell probably four times and I was so disappointed, but my mom looked at me and she said, ‘Don’t look at the fact that you just fell; look at where you are. So many girls would love to compete at nationals.’ She got me ice cream so we could celebrate the moment together, and that moment really stuck with me. It kinda taught me to be grateful for all the competitions,” Laurie recalls.

Given Laurie’s athletic background and her close relationship with her mom, it’s no surprise that Laurie and Wanda joined Febreze’s “I Love You, But Sometimes You Stink” campaign—and they’re the first Latina mother-daughter pair to get involved!

“Personally, as an athlete, I think I can really relate to coming home and being all sweaty from a workout,” Laurie says. “All my equipment really smells and sometimes my sister wouldn’t even want my gym bag in the back of her car because it was so nasty.”

The solution to Laurie’s less-than-sweet smell is Febreze’s new line of products that incorporate OdorClear technology, which is designed to break down odors and leave any surface with a refreshing scent.

“If you wash a gymnast’s equipment, it can get a little bit slippery and it feels a little uncomfortable while you're out there, whether you're tumbling or whether you're on the uneven bars, so thankfully, with Febreze, you can just spray it and it smells good and it doesn't change anything, it just makes it smell a lot better—and that really benefits me as an athlete,” Laurie explains. “It's funny because I am an ambassador for Febreze at Walmart, but before the campaign, before anything, my mom would stash Febreze around the house.”

When Laurie’s not having workout sessions that last for hours, she's also hard at work pursuing her education. Anyone who has experience being a student-athlete knows that it takes plenty of dedication, and Laurie can completely relate to the stress involved in finding time for both.

"It's definitely a little hard at first," she says. "I've been homeschooling since the third grade, and I actually just finished my junior year of high school, so that's pretty exciting. But it means a lot to me, both education and then finding time for practice. Once you can figure out your priorities, balancing your schedule becomes a lot easier."

Since Laurie’s currently on a much-needed break, she has a lot more time to do fun and relaxing things, like getting her nails done, going shopping and binge-watching some of her favorite shows (which include The Blacklist, Law & Order and Riverdale). "I've been taking a little break, both mentally and physically, from gymnastics, but I'll probably ease my way back into it by the end of the summer," she says.

As an accomplished gymnast, best-selling author and winner of Dancing With the Stars, Laurie is excited to tackle a new challenge once she starts college: acting.

"I'm definitely looking forward to acting. I mean, after Dancing with the Stars, it was like every week I had to play a different character. One week it was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the next week, it was Chicago. They're totally different characters, but I loved swapping that fast, so it's something I'm looking forward to."

With Laurie's dedication, enthusiasm and talent, it's safe to say that she'll succeed in the next chapter of her life!

Ivanka Trump Violates Norms by Taking Her Dad's Seat at G20 Summit

On Saturday, Ivanka Trump took her father's place at the Group of 20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, breaking protocol followed by leaders at world summits, according to The Washington Post.

The Post reports that President Donald Trump was originally seated at the table alongside his daughter, but had to step out to attend other meetings.

Former NATO Ambassador Nicholas Burns told the Post that President Trump's actions were a breach of protocols for these summits. Burns said that the G20 summit—as well as similar conferences for world leaders—are meant to showcase who has power in the government, and the secretary of state typically takes the president's place if needed.

“This is a group of the 20 most powerful leaders in the world in the 20 most powerful countries in the world," Burns said. "It conveys that impression and we are a democracy and that’s also important here.”

Since the beginning of his presidency, President Trump has been called out by many Americans because of his controversial mashup of family and government affairs—but this past weekend's action also gained backlash from other G20 world leaders.

The Post reports that a senior European official who wanted to remain anonymous commented, "Yes, it stuck out. The very fact that his daughter is senior adviser smacks of the kind of nepotism not seen since John F. Kennedy named Robert F. Kennedy as attorney general.”

On Monday, Trump tweeted about the situation, saying that Ivanka taking his spot at the conference was "very standard" and that supposedly "Angela M," most likely referring to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the host of this year's G20 conference, agrees.

He also found a way to weave in his two fave topics, the Clintons and fake news.

From the looks of it, President Trump doesn't see anything wrong with blurring the lines between family and politics—and he'll probably keep tweeting about it, too.

Harvard's Elite 'Fox' Final Club Has Revoked Women's Membership

Alumni leaders of the Fox Club, an elite social club at Harvard University, have recently decided to expel nine female members who were temporarily admitted as "provisional members," according to The Boston Globe

Both professors and students have debated whether or not female students should be allowed to participate in the club, which was exclusively male from 1898 until October 2015.

For the past two years, the Harvard community has been debating how much the school can control student-driven clubs. The Fox Club has just missed the beginning of a new penalty to be enforced for the Class of 2021 stating every club should be gender neutral, The Harvard Crimson reports. If students join single-gender clubs, they'll be ineligible for some opportunities, like leadership positions on sports teams and recommendations for scholarships.

According to the Crimson, Daniel T. Skarzynski, former undergraduate president of the Fox Club, previously wrote to club graduate board president Hugh M. Nesbit about re-applying for membership. Nesbit responded saying provisional members—both male and female—were not allowed to re-submit an application.

“For the concerned parties, [Nesbit] also said that if you’d like to be re-considered for membership, you should send an email to that effect…and that the grad board will vote individually,” Skarzynski wrote. “However, he said this invite for reapplication does not apply to female members until such a time as the club votes successfully to add women to its membership.”

Since Harvard has been pressuring many student organizations and elite clubs to adopt gender-neutral policies, the Fox's decision to revoke membership to females is controversial—and, if you ask me, pretty ridiculous.

You Thought Chris Evans’ Dog Was Dead? Surprise: He’s Alive!

Let’s be real: Our dogs are our best friends, and when we have to leave them, it’s awful. The same goes for celebrities and their dogs. Chris Evans tweeted about his doggy BFF, Dodger, over the weekend to express how much he missed his pup.

So cute, right? Well, thinking Chris's dog had died, his followers (including Seth Rogen) were distraught. Tweets flooded in with condolences and questions about what had happened to the pup, which the actor just recently adopted. There were TEARS. Very real tears.

Luckily, though, Chris later clarified that his dog is fine. He was just missing his fur baby while away shooting a film.

I definitely want more pictures of Dodger (with Chris!), but I demand more happy ones that show him actively being the cute dog he is. Maybe Dodger needs his own Twitter account?

A Former Penn State Frat Member's Texts Reveal Disturbing Details About the Death of a 19-Year-Old Pledge

On Monday, 16 Penn State University students and former fraternity brothers of the now-shut-down Beta Theta Pi returned to court to give more details about the death of 19-year-old student Timothy Piazza, who died Feb. 4 after falling down a flight of stairs during a pledge ceremony.

According to ABC News, one of the students charged in connection with the death of Piazza reportedly texted his girlfriend "drink hazing can send me to jail," and "I don't want to go to jail for this."

No videos exist of Piazza's fall down the stairs, but one video shows Piazza's body, with a large bruise, being carried by four fraternity brothers. Prosecutors say the bruise appears to be a spleen injury. ABC News reports that the frat brothers did not call 911 until about 12 hours after he fell in an attempt to cover up the situation.

Tom Kline, the Piazza family's attorney, has seen the video and described it to ABC News as "horrific" and "gruesome," saying, "The young man (was) force-fed alcohol, had his own shoes thrown at him, beer thrown on him, punched, sat on, and then left literally to die."

Pieces of evidence, such as texts and Google searches, are helping prosecutors gain insight as to what happened to Piazza that February night. One of the fraternity members searched “How will nine drinks in an hour affect a 200-pound guy?”, which shows that Piazza was possibly dangerously drunk.

The members at Beta Theta Pi left Piazza without help or medical attention for 12 hours, ABC News reports. The frat members were afraid of facing the consequences and tried to hide any evidence of what happened that night, sending messages like: "Make sure the pledges keep quiet about last night and this situation," "Make sure the pledges clean the basement and get rid of any evidence of alcohol" and "I think we are fucked. Like beyond fucked."

According to USA Today, the grand jury found that Piazza's death was a "direct result of the extremely reckless conduct of members of the Beta fraternity"—and that the Interfraternity Council, the organization that oversees fraternities such as Beta Theta Pi, is also at fault for not doing enough to discourage the kind of behavior that led to his death.

USA Today reports that 18 Penn State students face charges for involuntary manslaughter, hazing, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, but two of those students waived their right to the preliminary hearing on Monday.

The Beta Theta Pi chapter has been permanently shut down by Penn State University. The university also plans to cut back on Greek life and increase control on fraternities and sororities.

The World Health Organization Is Warning that Gonorrhea May Become Untreatable

Last Friday, the World Health Organization announced that gonorrhea, a common sexually transimitted disease (STD), is becoming harder to treat due to antibiotic resistance.

The news release from WHO reports that each year, 78 million people are infected with gonorrhea—and factors such as decreased condom use, increased urbanization and travel, inadequeate or failed treatment, and low rates of detecting infection contribute to the increase in gonorrhea cases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventation, gonorrhea is the "second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States." Symptoms often include pain during discharge or urination but symptoms can often be absent until the disease develops.

In the news release, Human Reproduction Medical Officer Dr. Teodora Wi explains the issue, saying, "The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart. Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them."

The antibiotics that are usually treated for this common STD are ceftriaxone and azithromycin. According to WHO, doctors now recommended giving both antibiotics to patients. But overprescribing the antibiotics could also make the problem a lot worse. WHO explains that ESCs are the now the only antibiotic that has been reported completely successful in treating gonorrhea.

Marc Sprenger, Director of Antimicrobial Resistance at WHO, said, “To control gonorrhea, we need new tools and systems for better prevention, treatment, earlier diagnosis, and more complete tracking and reporting of new infections, antibiotic use, resistance and treatment failures."

USA Today reports that the STD can be transmitted through oral, anal and vaginal sex. Gonorrhea can also be passed onto a baby through vaginal delivery, and if the infection goes untreated, it can lead to other inflammatory diseases or even infertility. In an era of "smart" bacteria, it's now more important than ever to remember to be smart with your sex life and use protection to prevent the spread of STDs.

So Lele Pons Probably Just Lied About Donating Her Hair

I remember little fifth grade me going to get my haircut and thinking it was such a genius idea to donate it to Locks of Love. Who wouldn’t want to help kids while keeping good hair from going to waste?! Not me.

It seems like Lele Pons had the same idea, but couldn’t follow through. Lele posted a picture on Instagram of her new short hair look while her friend held the “cut” ponytail. The post was later deleted when fans noticed something was weird in the picture.

Organizations that take hair donations don't allow treated hair (i.e. blonde or colored in any way). Lele's hair was not only heavily treated, but if you look closely at the pic, her ponytail is totally made up of extensions. So is she lying to get attention? Or did she legitimately try to donate hair and it just didn't work out?

Lele’s heart was (hopefully) in the right place as she took to Twitter to clear things up…kind of.

I mean, she still lied originally, but she did bring attention to a good cause that she cares about. Couldn't she have just not posted anything at all instead of posting something fake?

What To Do If You're Going Crazy At Home This Summer

0
0

It can be a drag to leave your friends and head home for the summer. No more late-night Taco Bell or spontaneous parties without getting yelled at by mom and pops. It's easy to suffer from FOMO while home for the summer and go completely crazy. If that sounds like you, don't worry -- we've got you covered. We've talked to college women around the country who have advice to help you get through this summer at home.

Plan trips

If you can't be at college, and you're tired of sitting around at home, planning trips is the perfect way to escape from a mundane summer. Whether it's a short road trip, or a week-long adventure, a change of scenery is always the perfect refresher.

Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth University, gives us a few great tips. "I would recommend planning on a trip or vacation somewhere -- whether it be somewhere as local as the next state over or traveling to a country abroad," she says. "If that's not possible, try immersing yourself in another culture through different means -- whether it be by learning a new language (e.g. through your local library's resources) or trying a new cuisine out!" This could be a great solution if you can't stand living at home anymore. So, grab some friends and hit the road!

Get a summer job

A summer job is a great way to stay busy during months spent at home while saving money for the school year. You're sure to get antsy sitting at home waiting for the fall semester to come, so working a job can make it fly by and be an opportunity to meet new people.

Kayleen Parra-Padron, a senior at Florida International University, lets us in on her summer plans. "Instead of being home all day, I work full-time all week and take summer classes," she says. "Otherwise, I think I'd go crazy doing nothing. Typical Virgo thing to do!" It's a great way to make use of your spare time, and she makes a good point with summer classes as well.

Take summer classes

If you're anything like us, you'll be taking some summer classes to get ahead (or catch up). If you aren't going to be near campus for the summer, try enrolling in online classes that you can work on while at home. This is a great way to stay productive. Plus, you won't have to ease back into your studies when you return for the fall semester.

Marialexia Hernandez, a senior at the University of Central Florida, notes the benefits of keeping your mind sharp. "Summer classes get you ahead and keep you busy, too," she says. "When you get back in the fall, the transition from fun in the sun to freaking out all fall is not as intense." Loading your summer with productivity is a smart move, and it will make the days fly by. If it's too late to sign up for classes at your college, try reading up on some of your upcoming classes for fall and getting prepared so you'll be ahead. Or, if you haven't registered for fall yet, do some research on the classes you need to be taking for your major/minor.

Spend quality time with your family

Going away to college can help you appreciate having your family around. Your time spent at home for the summer could be a great way to spend more quality time with the family members you miss during the school year.

Elena Pham, a junior at the University of Central Florida, reminds us that time with your family is limited and precious. "My advice is to genuinely cherish and appreciate your time with your family because once you're graduated, that time will only dwindle," she says.

Although spending time with family all summer may not seem that exciting, those are memories you will hold onto once you've plummeted into the real world after college.

Learn a new skill

Spending months at home means you have endless time to adopt a new skill or hobby. Julia Southwick, a junior at the University of Central Florida, says to, "Learn a new skill: cooking, crafting, others." There are tons of possibilites when it comes to picking up a new hobby during summertime. Whether it's learning how to surf, skate, knit, or paint, taking the time to learn a new skill will save you from boredom and have you returning to school sharper than ever.

Spend time with old friends

Like family, we can sometimes take for granted how much time we get to spend with our hometown friends. It's hard when you see your friends at least five days a week during high school and then part ways. Your time spent at home for the summer could be used to catch up on some of those old friendships.

Emily Schmidt, a sophomore at Stanford University, mentions how she enjoys seeing old friends and spending time in her hometown. "Although it's hard for us to get together all at once, I love being able to slide back into our old ways. When I'm not hanging with my friends, I try to participate in local events my town holds. I come from a really small town, so it's a great way to see other people I haven't seen in a while." The summer months are important for reuniting with your friends from childhood and high school.

Volunteer in the community

Spending time at home means you have plenty of time to do something good for the community. Whether it's cleaning up your neighborhood beach, helping out at the local animal shelter, or preparing food for the homeless, volunteering is a great way to make use of the months you'll be home. Instead of just laying around binge-watching Netflix, you can really make a difference and spend time advocating for something that matters to you.

Sites such as https://www.volunteermatch.org/ can provide you with resources regarding all volunteer opportunities: Animals,Advocacy and Human Rights, Arts and Culture, Board Developments, and more.

Your summer months at home don't have to be a drag. There are several ways to effectively fill your summer with fun, productive, and unique activities that can actually make it one of the best summers yet. You earned your time off, so don't spend it smothered in boredom. There are plenty of options to make every summer a great one.

Ashton Kutcher Shut Down This Tabloid's Rumor That He's Cheating on Mila Kunis in the Best Way Possible

0
0

It's a widely-accepted fact that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are basically the cutest celebrity couple of all time - so nobody was buying it when the tabloid Star reported that Ashton was cheating on his wife and former That '70s Show costar.

Obviously, Ashton himself especially wasn't here for it when the tabloid printed a story picturing him hanging out with a "stunning brunette" - and he clapped back at the totally untrue rumor in the best way possible.

"You should have heard how upset Mila was that I spent the day with our cousin," he tweeted along with a photo of the story. "Sorry Aunt Jodie, these magazines lack integrity."

SHUT. DOWN. It does, indeed, turn out that Ashton's "mystery girl" was actually just his cousin Jodie. This isn't the first time he's had to address false cheating rumors either, and he's clearly fed up.

"Character comes when those magazines tear you apart for something you may or may not have done and you gotta go out and perform tomorrow - with everyone looking at you like you might be an adulterer," he said while accepting the Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award back in April.

Lesson learned: don't believe everything you read. Oh, and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are still the absolute cutest couple in Hollywood. The end.

Why I Choose to Follow Donald Trump on Twitter

0
0

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

I follow Donald Trump on Twitter–both his personal and presidential accounts.

When I wake up and check Twitter, I don’t look forward to blithe comments about North Korean missile strikes, false dichotomies between good and evil or even the unnecessary uses of capitalization. Nonetheless, President Trump is our president, and whether you like it or not, he is the face of this nation.

I do not endorse Trump or the majority of his policies, but I strongly believe that it is important to listen to and respect the other side, and also to be informed. I believe that as Americans and as citizens of the world we must endorse free speech in every aspect of its definition. Free speech is a long standing and central American value at the core of many of our identities. But do we truly know what it means?

In my opinion, free speech refers to a person's right to speak one’s mind without fear of repression, oppression and censorship.

According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; yet not everyone receives it. This right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

We need to support viewpoints of diversity, especially on college campuses. We need to promote the diversity of thought and the right of all students to advance their academic and personal convictions, free from intimidation. The popularity of an opinion should not determine whether it is protected or not.

We need to focus on the issues themselves rather than on shaming and stigmatization–and that’s speaking to all sides of the spectrum. Stifling free speech leads to polarization, not progress. The rise of having two strongly opposing sides–both in the political arena and in media–has overwhelmingly grown over the past few decades. According to a study by Vox, this strong divide has been growing ever since the 1970s.

There are few social platforms where polarization is more evident than on Twitter. On Independence Day, there was a post about impeachment next to a tweet entitled #RaisedRight. Also, when NPR tweeted the Declaration of Independence, Trump supporters misinterpreted the content as inciting a revolution. Seem polarizing to you?

Partisanship has become increasingly toxic. Anger is one of the most pervasive and easily contagious emotions, especially on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Quite frankly, this is dangerous for our health–and for the health of our country.

Newspapers and journals such as CNN and The Atlanticare among my favorite websites to peruse, but at the same time, I recognize that they’re incredibly left-leaning. I use Twitter because of the engaging diversity of people, access to breaking news and the ability to track trends over time. I use Twitter because it gives me the chance to absorb as much from other people's tweets as it does to listen to my own thoughts. Along with using Twitter, I sign up for the “Your 1600 Daily,” as well as The Washington Post’s“The Daily 202.”

I also follow Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, Rand Paul and many more politicians from across the spectrum. After all, in each of our country’s discussions on policies and major issues, we need as many viewpoints as possible on the table. Only then can we begin to bridge our divides.

Donald Trump's tweets may not be pleasant or even correct, but we need to be aware of what he's saying so we can be better informed citizens during politcal discourse.

Hilary Duff Re-Created That Disney Channel Wand Promo & My Childhood Is Officially Still Alive

0

There was basically nothing that defined our childhoods more than one of the stars of our favorite Disney Channel shows holding up a wand and tracing that ~iconic~ mouse ears outline and announcing their name and the fact that we were watching Disney Channel. (Duh.) So luckily for us, there is video evidence of an all-grown-up Hilary Duff re-creating hers - and it's actually everything.

The former Lizzie McGuire and current Younger star appeared on Buzzfeed's"Truth or Dare Jenga," and was of course dared to see if she still had it in her. Obvi, she did, although her mouse ears drawing skills seem to have gotten a little less... accurate over the years. Close enough though, right?

The actress then went to clear the air about those behind-the-scenes videos on Twitter that show she was actually less than thrilled to be filming the original thing - and it turns out she was way more okay with it than her teenage self might have looked.

"It’s so ridiculous. It’s so funny though. So we had to do the thing and then they put it in CGI, the mouse ears," she explains in the video. "And then they made us do it like 900 times. And I think I like lost all personality at that point. Plus, I was, like, a pubescent teen - I was like, what are they making me do, this is invisible!"

Of course, she also added that she's now happy she did it, because it's truly hilarious. Girl, I agree entirely. So much nostalgia.

Miley started her vegan journey in 2014 after the passing of her dog, Floyd, inspired her to stop consuming animal products. Now, she has a ton of pets she cares for, and she even got some of them tattooed too. Her boo, Liam Hemsworth, is also vegan which makes me think they’re probably the best dog parents ever. Goals? Goals.

A New Study Has Found That Many Female Scientists of Color Don't Feel Safe at Work

A new study has confirmed what many women of color working in STEM fields already knew to be true: that women of color face particular challenges in the workplace that can contribute to an environment in which they feel unsafe.

Glamour reports that the study, done by the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets looked specifically at female astronomers and planetary scientists - and the results are disheartening to say the least. 40% of the 474 women surveyed said they had previously felt unsafe in the workplace because of their gender, and 28% felt the same way because of their race.

Unfortunately, these feelings end up having very real impacts on women's careers. 18% of the women of color surveyed said that they'd skipped a class, meeting, fieldwork opportunity, or professional event at least once within the past five years due to fears for their safety.

Kathryn Clancy, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois and lead author of the research, told Buzzfeed News "These are all current issues that women of color are facing right now. They’re feeling unsafe today. They’re skipping professional events today."

Of course, in a field that is still extremely male-dominated, it's not exactly hard to understand why many women of color feel this way - not to mention that one of Clancy's previous studies in 2014 found that 71% of 666 female scientists surveyed had experienced harassment at some point while working in the field, and that 26% had been assaulted while on the job.

While even one woman of color feeling unsafe in her workplace because of who is is is too many, numbers this high are simply not okay - and prove that we have a long way to go when it comes to supporting women, and specifically women of color, in math and science-related fields.

When Should You Introduce Your SO to Your Parents?

So first of all, congratulations on not being single. Secondly, congratulations on playing yourself. Relationships are really hard without having to put parents into the mix, but they’ll have to meet eventually, right? So, the real question is WHEN should your SO and parents meet? The answer is difficult. There are so many factors to consider. Thinking about these several conditions will help you determine when the right time will be.

1. It’s been a good deal of time

Your one-night Tinder fling is definitely not bring-home-to-meet-your-dad material. Have you not seen the “She calls me daddy too” memes? Taking some time in the relationship and making sure everything is solid is a pretty good step into having your SO meet your parents. Otherwise, how do you expect to answer all those awkward questions your parents will throw at you about your SO?

Amanda Goecke, a junior at Carthage College, waited until her and her boyfriend were official to have him meet her parents.

“We had talked and hung out and were basically dating for about six months before making it official and my parents were aware of him the whole time, so I personally felt at that time it was appropriate for them to meet,” Amanda says. “I think it ranges from couple to couple but I had been dying for them to meet right away!”

It’s imperative to know that the relationship is meant to last before you take the plunge into having them meet your parents.

2. You feel comfortable with the person

Embarrassing stories from your childhood are sure to ensue. Make sure you and your bae are comfortable with each other enough to handle that story about that one time you pooped your pants during a family trip. (I WAS 3-YEARS-OLD, MOM.)

How do you know when you’re comfortable with your SO? Well, it depends on the person. One way to know is when you do something that others may find embarrassing, yet both of you manage to laugh about it without feeling humiliated. Light saber battles in the middle of Target is the most optimal test.

3. You’re sure it's serious

You can be with a person for months, but at the end, both of you know the relationship probably won’t survive a year. Relationships like these are definitely not the ones you want to show to your parents. If the only connection you have with the person is sex, there’s no way your parents can see what you see in your SO. Choose a person you see spending the rest of your life with, not just a relationship you have during summer semester because all your friends are gone and you feel lonely.

Emily Schmidt, a Stanford University freshman, has been dating her SO for three months, but she hasn’t introduced him to her parents.

“My SO and I have been dating for about three months now and we will be doing long-distance over the summer while he studies abroad in Chile,” she says. “I think I want to introduce him to my parents once I know we can overcome the distance obstacle."

Making sure your SO will be there for you no matter what is super important. The test of distance away from each other is the best variable to see if your SO is meant to stay forever. Emily’s tactic is a sure-fire way to figure out if her SO is parent-meeting material.

3. Things went well when they met your friends

Having your SO meet your friends first is a low-stakes trial run before having them meet your parents. If your bae and friends had an awkward first encounter, expect the same with your parents. However, there are rare cases where the friend meeting didn’t go well, but your SO really hit it off with your parents. If that’s the case, just make sure it wasn’t a one-time deal, and try hanging out with your parents more. See how they’d react to your SO after a certain amount of time together.

Sorry to disappoint, but there’s never a “right” time for your SO to meet the folks. Everyone is different, and they all have their own individual “right time.” You’ll always feel like your parents deserve to meet Prince Harry instead of some guy you just met through OkCupid. But believe me, once you see your bae as your very own Prince Charming, having him meet the parentals will be a breeze.

How to Freshen Up Post-Workout When You Don’t Have Time to Shower

Sometimes, when we say we don't have time to work out, we really mean it. It's not just the time on the treadmill we're talking about—it's the warm-up, the workout, and everything that comes after—a shower, makeup refresh and the like. Well, lack of time won’t be a valid excuse anymore. We talked to both college women and Dr. Elizabeth Hale, a clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University and vice president of the Skin Cancer Foundation, about how to freshen up after a workout when you have no time to shower.

Skin

1. Blot away excess oil

When it comes to cleaning your skin after a workout, you've got options. Blotting pads are a great place to start because they wipe off all the excess sweat and oil on your skin before you wash your face.

2. Clean your skin with salicylic acid

Nothing really beats washing your face with your trusted face wash and a washcloth, but sometimes you might find yourself in a real rush. Easy solution? Face wipes with salicylic acid (like Clearasil pads) will help to keep acne away, according to Dr. Hale.

3. Use face and body wipes

Facial and body wipes are some of most recommended ways college women and Dr. Hale suggest to freshen up quickly. Margeaux Biché, a junior at Barnard College, uses wet facial wipes after she works out. “The wipes (which you can get for really cheap at places like TJ Maxx) make me feel nice and freshened up after getting grimy after exercise or sweating of any kind,” Margeaux says. But you don’t have to limit it to just your face; all-over body wipes (like these) are a total lifesaver too! They can make you feel as refreshed as you would if you had actually taken a shower.

4. #NoMakeupNeeded

Going all-natural at the gym has its perks. “When you’re working out, your skin is primed for absorption,” Dr. Hale says. Because of this, it’s easy for your skin to drink up any foundation or creams you may have put on your face. This is actually really cool, if you make it work for you. Instead of putting on foundation, Dr. Hale uses an antioxidant serum (she recommends Skinceuticals) on her face, which helps to counteract skin damage from the environment. In other words, it detoxes your skin while you're breaking a sweat. But if you don’t want to go all natural, Dr. Hale says waterproof mascara and lipstick are fine to wear while working out.

5. Don’t forget deodorant

As for the rest of the body, deodorant is always a safe bet for beating B.O. On top of that, Women’s Health recommends using baby powder to dry off your skin and changing into a fresh set of clothes if you can’t hop in the shower. Speaking of clean clothes...

6. Get out of your sweaty clothes pronto

Dr. Hale stresses one of the best ways to stay fresh is to immediately change clothes when you’re done working out. Otherwise, the sweat and grime will build up on your skin, causing bacteria. Dr. Hale recommends changing into a cotton shirt because the material is the best when it comes to allowing the skin to breathe.

Hair

1. Dry shampoo is life

We straight up owe our lives to dry shampoo. College women swear by the stuff—because who has time to shampoo, right?

Lexi Hill, a junior at the University of South Carolina, has a whole procedure for this kind of thing. “When I don’t have time to shower after a workout, I normally blow dry my hair by using the cool setting on the blow dryer. And then, once it's dry, I put dry shampoo near my roots and a smoothing product on my ends. After that, I style however I’d like,” she says.

2. Baby powder—yes, you read that right

The real aim here is just to absorb the excess moisture from your scalp and be able to make your hair look clean. Baby powder is great for that reason, and it can do double-duty by working on both your skin and hair. Baby powder sounds like a weird product to use, but Elizabeth Lloyd, a senior at Minnesota State University, Mankato, says it works like a charm. “It sounds weird and scary at first but it works miracles! Sprinkle as much or as little as you need, let it sit a few seconds and work your fingers through your hair. All the white powder goes away and your hair is left fresh!” she says. To get rid of the smell, Elizabeth says she sprays a little perfume over it to diffuse the scent. If you don’t have baby powder, Margeaux says she’s had luck with powder deodorant too, which does essentially the same thing as dry shampoo and baby powder. Just in case you need another option.

3. Own that ponytail, work that updo!

Even if dry shampoo can work miracles, wearing your hair down after a workout doesn't always have you feeling your best. Luckily, styles like buns and braids are perfect for tying your hair back in a pinch while still making it look great. If you need gym hair inspo, we've got you covered.

Obviously there’s nothing that beats a shower after a sweat sesh, but we’re busy women! So if you have to cut time, these options are a great substitute to make you feel fresh and clean sans shower.

Get ready to spend even more time at your beloved Target, because word is, the store's getting a bit of an update. Target's Executive Vice President, Mark Tritton, announced that over the next two years, the mega-retailer will be introducing over a dozen new brands while freshening up the store's appeal for guests. "Everything we do is based not only on our guests’ needs today, but also where we see our brands forging a space tomorrow. To do this, we’re working and thinking differently at Target," Tritton stated. One area the store is rethinking is it's fashion labels. Older brands like Merona and Mossimo that aren't performing up to par will be phased out, while new clothing lines unique to Target will begin taking their place on the racks.

Here's a sneak preview of some of the first exclusive fashion brands Target is launching.
