I love The Princess DiariesThe Prince & Me and even A Royal Christmas (that one Hallmark movie with Gretchen Wieners). I recently read The Royal We and am effectively ruined for life. This Coffee Shop Made Lattes in Avocado Skins & People Actually Wanted Them

$

We've seen some pretty ridiculous inventions lately. Just last week, a company planning to make rompers for dudes raised well over $350,000 on kickstarter. But here's one new invention that's probably never crossed your mind—a latte served in the hollowed-out skin of an avocado.

An Australian coffee shop in Melbourne called Truman Cafe originally created this Frankenstein's monster as a joke, but now internet users from all over the globe are planning trips to the cafe to try it out, according to The Telegraph. This proves that you can add avocado to literally anything, and people will want it.

Jaydin Nathan, a barista at the Truman Cafe, told News.com.au, "It was actually just a joke. We weren't actually selling them but then someone came in today and wanted one."

This kind of seems like it could be a good way to cut down on waste—but there are obviously major issues with it. Avocado mixed with coffee sounds really gross, for one, and you would have to leave some of the avocado in the skin in order for it to hold its shape as a cup for your latte. #Avolatte strugs, amirite?

But who knows—maybe by this time next year we'll all be drinking our coffee out of avocados. After all, we're living in a post-Unicorn Frappuccino world where Donald Trump is the president of the United States. Anything's possible!

How to Make One Blazer Last All Week at Your Internship

$

0

When you’re working as an intern (which often means working for free), your office outfit budget only stretches so far. As it turns out, you don’t have to buy an entire new wardrobe full of blazers, pencil skirts and tailored pants for your new gig—you can actually get away with buying one blazer and wearing it all week. Yes, seriously! Below, we break it down for you—here’s how to make the same jacket work Monday through Friday.

Our blazer pick: Essential Structured Blazer ($39.99 at Mango)

1. Monday

Mango Blazer 1

Mondays are enough of a struggle already without having to pick out a complicated outfit. Keep things simple with a super comfy shirtdress that looks a lot more dressed up than it feels. Flats are a great choice for a Monday, but the pointed toe on this pair makes them still feel work-appropriate. Add tassel earrings for a fun but subtle detail.

2. Tuesday

Mango Blazer 2

The midi skirt trend is basically every intern’s dream—it’s the easiest way to look chic while still staying covered up enough for the office. Pair an on-trend button-front version with a classic striped button-down shirt. Wedges can totally work for the office, and your feet won’t be killing you by the end of the day—just make sure to pick a platform-less pair for 9-to-5 wear. When it comes to purses, every intern learns quickly that a giant bag for stuffing in all your essentials is a must-have. This faux leather pick looks polished, even if it’s holding your laptop, flats for commuting and your lunch.

3. Wednesday

Mango Blazer 3

Try a twist on the classic suit by wearing pastel pink pants with your blazer, which makes for a super chic update on typical office wear. Add a feminine edge to the menswear vibes of this outfit with a tie-neck blouse. Nude heels are the perfect pair of shoes for letting the blush hues on your pants do the talking.

4. Thursday

Mango Blazer 4

If you thought you couldn’t rock a jumpsuit at work, think again: a minimal wrap-style jumpsuit with a blazer to top it off keeps you completely covered up. Heeled mules are one of fashion’s favorite shoes this summer, and we like the intern-friendly chunky heels on this Steve Madden pair. (Read: no sprained ankles if you’re running around all day.) A classic gray messenger bag is the perfect way to transition from your usual campus backpack.

5. Friday

Mango Blazer 5

Culottes are the office-approved pants you never knew you needed. With a cropped length and a loose silhouette, they’re ideal for wearing to the office in the middle of the hot summer weather. Dress them up with a luxe satin blouse peeking out from underneath your blazer. Chunky heeled boots add height (a must when wearing boxy culottes), without sacrificing comfort.

With a little bit of styling creativity, it’s easy to stretch one essential investment piece from 9 to 5, five days a week—so you can save your wardrobe funds for when it really counts (aka your off-duty days).

Trigger warning: depression, eating disorders, OCD

By Vaneza Paredes

As a child, I loved eating hot dogs. Only, I was extremely meticulous about my hot dog-eating ritual. See, the hot dog had to be boiled to perfection—not cooked on the grill. It had to be cut up into tiny slices, which I did myself using my green plastic knife and fork. Then I needed a side of ketchup, only it couldn’t touch the hot dog, as I liked to be in control of how much ketchup would be carefully smothered over each hot dog slice. And once everything was perfectly set, my napkin carefully folded once over my lap, my fork set at just the right angle, the cup of juice on my left-hand side, then I was ready to finally eat my hot dog in peace. Little did I know, that these were the very beginning stages of my obsessive-compulsive disorder revealing itself at the young age of five.

For most of my life, I had no idea that so many small quirks of mine were actually OCD compulsions, or things you feel compelled to do. Didn’t everyone have to fix all the shampoo bottles to have their labels facing forward before they could take a shower? Didn’t everyone double-check to make sure their front door was locked or the lights in their bedroom were turned off seven times before they left the house? Didn’t everyone make their bed before leaving their house, because if they didn’t it would bother them all day? Surely they did! It took nearly 20 years before a therapist pointed out that perhaps these small tasks I felt I had to do were actually symptoms of OCD.

Hope everyone's okay :)

A post shared by Mental Health Daily (@mentalhealthdaily_) on

After graduating high school, I was set on my way with a full scholarship to a college up North. Thrilled to start anew and find out who I truly was, I was ready to go weeks in advance with my new dorm accessories and a brand new wardrobe. Only, at school, I found myself crippled with homesickness and an intense and overwhelming depression. I missed my friends, my home, and my family. Despite my efforts to make new friends, force myself out on Friday nights, take on two jobs that I genuinely enjoyed, and seek out a therapist at the therapy center on campus, nothing I did could fill the gaping hole I felt in my chest. Getting through each hour of the day was my goal, and I tried my hardest to convince myself that I would be okay. This was my first introduction to another mental illness: depression.

That same year, as I battled depression, I tried to seek relief through exercise. Unfortunately, my half-hour workout sessions rapidly became one-hour sessions. Then two hours. And instead of five days a week, it became seven days a week. And when that wasn’t enough to make me feel better, I began to restrict my food intake. I restricted so much that I quickly began to lose weight. Each time my jeans felt looser, or my collarbone stuck out a little bit more, I congratulated myself. I had fallen victim to yet another mental illness: anorexia nervosa. And as my anorexia slowly spiraled out of control, I finally sought help and entered a rehabilitation center near my house. I moved back home, took a semester off from school, and for the very first time in my life, found out who I really was.

It was during my time at the rehab center that I discovered I am extremely prone to addiction problems and mental illnesses. Knowing that, I was able to learn how to cope with my mental illnesses—in a healthy way. I learned that journaling can truly go a very long way in terms of recovery and self-healing. I learned that visualizing and meditation are excellent ways to help calm my anxious brain. I have learned the importance of eating, and keeping my body healthy. It took a while, and I am still learning and practicing my techniques every day, but I am determined to not let my mental health destroy me like it almost did.

In November of this past year, my father passed away unexpectedly. Once again I found myself ready to restrict, utterly depressed, and meticulously re-doing and perfecting my homework assignments (another type of OCD compulsion). I finally went to a psychiatrist and confessed my intrusive thoughts, and the behaviors I felt I needed to do to get through the day. She prescribed me an antidepressant, and I am grateful that I was able to get the help I truly needed for so long. Taking medication doesn’t make me weak. It doesn’t make me a failure. It makes me strong for taking control of my mental health, and doing what is best for me.

I am not ashamed of my mental illnesses. They do not define who I am. My weight is not an indication of my worth. My compulsions will not control my life. And when I feel depressed, I turn to writing and I find my inner peace and happiness. I know who I am now: I am a young woman who is in charge of her mental health for the very first time.

This Video of a Girl Being Pulled Into the Water By a Sea Lion Is a Terrifying Reminder Not to Mess With Wild Animals

$

It's already becoming a meme, but this video of a sea lion dragging a little girl into the water is actually pretty scary.

The incident occurred in Steveston, a small community in West Canada. A video shows a California sea lion inching closer to the docks as witnesses throw food at the animal and talk about how cute it is. A little girl can be seen watching the sea lion, and eventually sitting down on the edge of the dock to look at it. Within seconds, the sea lion grabs the girl by her dress and drags her down to the water. A man immediately jumps in to save her, and both are pulled to safety by onlookers. Although no one was hurt, the incident did scare everyone present.

Michael Fujiwara filmed the experience and posted it on Youtube, gaining over a million views, according to The Washington Post

"They were pretty shaken up," Fujiwara told CBC News. "Her family was just in shock."

Andrew Tites, director of The Marine Mammal Research Unit at The University of British Columbia, told CBC, "My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect," he criticized. "they are not circus performers. they are not trained to be next to people."

Queen Vanessa Hudgens Crowned Herself With Butterflies at the BBMAs

Vanessa Hudgens is the queen of accessories—I mean, have you seen her Coachella looks? She knows how to be trendy while creating her own looks and, let's be honest, we all totally follow.

Last night at the Billboard Music Awards, Vanessa did it again. Co-hosting alongside Ludacris, the actress crowned her head with a butterfly crown for her third outfit of the night. It’s like a real-life Snapchat filter! The crown topped off a gorgeous cream-colored dress with a deep V-neck and long flowy sleeves, wrapped around the waist with black stripes to accentuate Vanessa's waistline.

Vanessa cut her long locks into a short bob just in time for the music award show. Her hairstylist Nikki Lee told Teen Vogue,“We cut a good 10 inches of length off, but kept her extensions in for fullness. It's a great way to get the most use out of your extensions before removing them.” Basically, it was the perfect style for hosting butterflies.

Although we don't know for sure, there's a good chance these beautiful accessories are from Free People. The brand has been serving up butterfly looks all season! Check out some of my faves.

Drake Called Nicki Minaj the Love of His Life, & Hearts Everywhere Melted

Drake broke records at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, but his back and forth with Nicki Minaj may have been the highlight of the night.

Accepting 13 awards means spending a lot of time giving speeches. While accepting the Top Billboard 200 Album Award, Drake looked at host Vanessa Hudgens and said, “I wanna say that, Vanessa Hudgens, you look incredible tonight.” The audience cheered, but Nicki wasn't having it, as the camera cut to her jokingly shouting, “What about me?”

Drake made sure not to forget Nicki later, though. “I'm so glad we found our way back because I love you, and I could never, ever, ever see it any other way,” he said.

When he went up to accept the Top Artist Award later that evening, Nicki, Lil Wayne and other collaborators joined him on stage. During his speech, Drake called a beaming Nicki “the love of my life.”

We'd lost all hope that these two could be friends again after the Drake-Meek Mill feud, but it's really happening. We can't wait to see what they do together next.

Demi Lovato Says She's Proud of Miley Cyrus for Getting Sober

We love an old school Disney reunion as much as the next person, but it’s even better to see two former Disney Channel stars supporting each other in their journeys to sobriety.

Demi Lovato, who celebrated being sober for five years in March, recently commended newly sober Miley Cyrus. “I am really proud of Miley," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think that it helps people to know that there are people in the spotlight that have challenges, that are faced with very stressful lives. I think it helps to know that recovery is possible and it’s something that is so important to certain people like myself."

According to an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1 Radio, Miley hasn’t smoked marijuana in 10 weeks, and she’s given up drinking alcohol, too.

Although Lovato sought professional treatment, Cyrus explained that she quit on her own. "A lot of people have reached out to me and they're like, 'You know, if you want help or if you want to go to these meetings...' and I'm like, 'No, when I want something, I can do it,'" Miley said. "Anything that I want to do—if I want to stop or start something, I can do anything. I just decided not to anymore and now it's easy for me."

Demi’s sobriety helped relaunch her career, and Miley seems to be headed toward the next stage of her career as well. Here’s to these women supporting one another despite their rocky past.

I'm Worried About the Future of the Free Press

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

By Florencia Miguez

President Trump is known for his infamous Twitter outbursts–which touch on everything from Katy Perry’s marriage to Arianna Huffington’s looks. But in between some of his ridiculous statements we can find some which are downright scary. The President frequently uses his Twitter account to express his discontent with the way the media is covering his administration: sometimes he simply discredits outlets by calling them part of the fake news media, sometimes he refers to the media as the enemy of the American people. On particularly rough days he combines both types of attacks into a single tweet.

Obviously, we could all take comfort in the fact that those tweets are just words and that the President is not taking action to stop the free press. But words can be dangerous. As Carl Bernstein (of Watergate fame) argued, “Donald Trump is demonstrating an authoritarian attitude and inclination that shows no understanding of the role of the free press.” The role of the free press in a democracy is crucial: it is often called the fourth branch of government, because, like Congress and the Courts, it can check and balance the power of the Executive Branch: it can hold the President accountable to his campaign promises, and more importantly it can report if the President is abusing his power.

But any sense of comfort disappears when we realize that President’s Trump fight against the free press is not limited to angry words and tweets. According to The Guardian, Trump asked former FBI director James Comey to go after journalists who use classified information as part of their reporting or even if they cite non-classified information coming from White House sources. It is common for journalists to report this kind of information, particularly the latter (sometimes White House officials will even leak information to gauge public opinion on certain proposals), and they haven’t dealt with the threat of prosecution in the past. And while The Guardian reports that the Espionage Act, the statute that the White House would use to prosecute journalists, is unconstitutional, I think the threat of a lawsuit could be enough deter journalistic investigations: it would take a lot of money and time to fight back.

Other Presidents, from Jefferson to Nixon, have had a contentious relationship with the press, but they tended to voice their concerns in private to allies and advisers. They recognized that they needed the press if they wanted their message to get to the American public, which relied on TV and newspapers to get news about what was happening in Washington. President Bush told Ellen DeGeneres that the relationship between the Presidency and the media is a "symbiotic" one: the media needs the President to write stories and the President needs the media to communicate with the electorate. However, President Trump thinks he doesn’t need the media because he can simply send a tweet to communicate with his base, and that has altered the way the Executive Branch and the press deal with each other.

This new dynamic can hurt the free press: knowing that he has nothing to lose, President Trump might break precedent and sue a journalist. It is safe to assume that any court would acquit a journalist because of the protections provided by the First Amendment. But the threat of prosecution can deter journalists from investigations, because nobody wants to go through a trial, especially an unfair one. For that reason I worry about the future of the free press, and more importantly about the future of democracy if dissent is punished and power isn’t checked by an active fourth branch.

It’s wedding season, and let’s be honest, weddings make everybody feel sentimental. The romance, the family, the music, the dancing—everything is so heartwarming.

Pippa Middleton decided to up the level of sentiment on her big day by wearing the same earrings she wore to her sister Kate Middleton’s wedding. Using the accessory as her “Something Old” was such a sweet way to commemorate the bond between her and her sister, especially on their wedding days!

Here’s Pippa wearing the earrings at Kate’s wedding:

And here’s Pippa wearing them at her own wedding:

What? I’m not crying! So gorgeous. I'm just waiting for the day I'll be allowed to attend a royal(ish) wedding.

Kris Jenner Is Willing to Be Kim Kardashian's Surrogate

After carrying six kids, you'd think Kris Jenner would be a pregnancy pro, and I guess you'd be right. During Sunday night's episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the 61-year-old offered to be daughter Kim Kardashian's surrogate. Kim has been exploring the idea of surrogacy so that she could have a third child with husband Kanye West.

Kris's fertility was a main topic of the episode, during which she talked about donating her eggs. Because of her age, a fertility doctor told Kris her eggs were no longer viable, but the doctor did say she would be able to be a surrogate for someone else.

After hearing that news, Kourtney suggested that Kris carry Kim's baby. "If I really thought that I could carry it for you and it would be born okay, I would do it in two seconds," Kris said. "I really would."

The 5 Hottest Hair Trends for Summer, According to Celebrity Stylist Kim Vo

$

When it comes to hairstyling, Kim Vo is a fixture. The colorist has worked with Britney Spears and Katherine Heigl, among many other big names, to create some of their most iconic looks. Not only that, but the charismatic Vo has been featured on a number of reality TV shows, including Khloé Kardashian's Revenge Body. To celebrate the launch of his brand new blow dry salon in Beverly Hills, the stylist shared the top hairstyles on his radar for the summer with Her Campus. Read on for #hairgoals inspo, and for tips from the master himself.

1. Rose Gold Hair

Rose gold is the go-to shade for just about everything these days, from your iPhone to your sneakers. Like with pretty much every trend in 2017, it has transpired into people's hair—and Vo is not immune to the pull of this hair color. "To keep your rose gold color fresh, wash your hair with cold water and use a color protecting shampoo," he says. "You can also use a dry shampoo—the less you wash your hair, the better! This type of color is not recommended to try at home. If you are going to make the [jump] to Rose Gold Hair, be sure to go to a professional and prepare yourself to be at the salon for a few hours."

2. Unicorn Braid

A little #UnicornBraid for my favorite Unicorn @ninadobrev #901girl

A post shared by Riawna Capri | Hairstylist (@riawna) on

No, this look doesn't involve an array of pastel colors (although it can if you want it to). "This is a french braid along the center part," Vo says. "You can do this look with the hair up, or with the hair down. This is an edgy twist on a classic French braid that I have noticed has been highly requested lately—so runway chic!"

3. Sleek & Straight With High Ponytail

Although Ariana Grande's signature look is a-dorable, it's no secret that using too much heat can damage your hair. "Always make sure to use a heat protector before flat ironing your hair," Vo advises. "This is a great way to keep your hair out of your face this summer, but still look chic. You can also finish the look by wrapping a section of hair around the ponytail for a sleek, polished look."

4. Pin Straight With Middle Part

Proof that sometimes, less is more. "For this look your hair cut must be on point," Vo warns us. "This works best with a blunt, above the shoulder cut. I recommend using the Kim Vo straightening Balm before styling the hair to keep your hair perfectly straight and smooth all day."

5. Half Up Bun

This look is so cute, and looks good on just about everyone with mid-length or long hair. "The half up bun has been everywhere," Vo says. "It's the easiest way to make your hair look like you have actually done something to it, when all you really have to do it put half of it up into a bun! You can also incorporate braids and twists to jazz it up a bit!"

Selena Gomez & The Weeknd Might Be Collaborating on a Song, & I'm Freaking Out

If you weren’t already freaking out about Selena Gomez and The Weeknd, get ready because all our dreams are about to come true. The adorable couple might be dropping a duet soon, and I’m FREAKING out.

Though it’s not official just yet, ELLE found a major reason to believe a collab is in the works, and it’s all because of a Wikipedia page. Hmmm.

After some snooping on songwriter Max Martin’s Wikipedia page, the mag found Sel’s not-yet-released track “In Her Element” is listed as "featuring The Weeknd." Whoa, baby—what a find!

Though this seems very real, it might not be legit since anyone can edit a Wikipedia page. Who knows where this info came from? Maybe from a troll who wants us to panic over nothing.

I guess the best we can do is wait and see. If this song is real, I might pass out. Can you imagine The Weeknd’s voice on a Selena track? Because the thought alone is enough to make me sweat. Let’s hope we know more soon.

Fyre Festival Is Being Investigated By the Federal Government

$

0

You all remember Fyre Festival, right? You know, the festival that was hyped up by Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner as the festival of the year, but ended up most resembling Scott Disick: a drunken mess. While we all had a great time following the drama on Twitter and Instagram, the festival caused a lot of real pain, and its organizers—Ja Rule and Billy McFarland—have been hit with as many as a dozen lawsuits. In addition to the festival’s $100 million lawsuit, Fyre Festival is now under FBI Investigation, according to The New York Times. Uh oh.

According to the Times, the FBI is investigating accusations of mail, wire and security fraud. There are literally thousands of people who have fallen victim to the Fyre Festival’s alleged fraud. You know, all of the attendees who paid at least $1,200 for the festival’s tickets, according to Business Insider. And even Fyre Festival employees have been duped by the festival’s organizers.

According to VICE, McFarland revealed in a leaked tape that the festival’s employees would not get paid. Apparently, they could continue to work at Fyre Media as unpaid employees, which is a bit of a contradiction. After all, the definition of an employee is someone who received wages or a salary. I feel like the word McFarland is looking for is "volunteers," though granted, volunteers aren’t typically hired as paid employees and then told they won’t be getting paid.

Regardless, Ja Rule and McFarland still seem unfazed by the severity of the investigation, telling the Times, “The whole world knows Fyre’s name now.” Yeah, everyone knows Fyre Festival’s name now, just like everyone knows Ted Bundy’s name. But nobody trusts or likes Ted Bundy.

While Ja Rule and McFarland seem calm and collected despite being under fire (fyre?), there is such a thing as bad publicity. Even if Fyre Media manages to survive multiple lawsuits and the current FBI investigation, it probably won’t be able to swing a successful festival.

19 Legging Brands That Are Just as Good as Lululemon

$

I love lululemon, but not only is it expensive, it also sometimes feels like the only available option when it comes to workout leggings. On a mission to right this wrong, I asked Her Campus contributors what their favorite leggings brands are, scoured the internet for product reviews, and tried a few alternatives myself. Behold the results of my groundbreaking research.

Adidas

$34.99 at SIX:02

For such a popular brand, Adidas' leggings are surprisingly affordable. These cute pants consistently receive 4.5 to 5 stars on Zappos and Amazon, so you know it's real.

Alo Yoga

$114 at Alo Yoga

"Better than lulu," says Her Campus contributor Elana Golub.

Asics

$50 at Asics

"I love my Asics leggings!!!" says HC contributor Abby Piper. "They're super high quality, have a cool design just like lulu and I got mine on sale so they were a way better price."

Athleta

$79 at Athleta

HC contributor Lexi Hill highly recommends Athleta leggings.

Bandier

$110 at Bandier

Now-cult brand Bandier is another favorite of Lexi's.

BELOFORTE

$132 at BELOFORTE

Recommended by yours truly, these babies just keep everything in place and are super breathable.

Booty by Brabants

$75 at Booty by Brabants

HC staffer Maggie Scenna is obsessed with this indie brand.

Carbon38

$196 at Carbon38

Maggie also loves Carbon38 for working out.

Express

$39.90 at Express

"I got a pair from express that are fab TBH," says HC staffer Sammi Burke.

Forever 21

$19.90 at Forever 21

It doesn't get much more affordable than Forever 21. Although you can't expect them to match the quality of lululemon, they come pretty close.

Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective made waves when they offered free leggings for the price of shipping (for real though—*cough cough* Sunny Co. Clothing), and have since garnered quite a few fans, including HC editor Katie Naymon.

Ivy Park

$40 at SIX:02

"I honestly think Ivy Park is actually really good quality and it's stylish!" says HC blogger Savanna Tavakoli.

Koral

$125 at SIX:02

I own this pair and, like, *insert peach emoji*

Mott50

$72+ at Mott50

Mott50's clothes protect you from the sun with UPF 50, compared to UPF 5 for most regular clothing. That's pretty cool, if you ask me.

Nuyu

$70 at Nuyu

Does lulu have collegiate collections? Didn't think so.

SoulCycle

$88 at SoulCycle

If you're a Soul addict, these are pretty much a must.

Target

$34.99 at Target

"Honestly great for the price," Abby says.

Victoria Sport

$62.50 at Victoria Sport

"I'm obsessed with the Knockout leggings from Victoria's Secret!" says HC blogger and Cal Poly member Taylor Petschl. I own these too, and I adore them—I got mine as part of a promotion, which included a pair of leggings and a sports bra for $55!

VS Pink

$59.95 at VS Pink

Not to be confused with Victoria Sport, VS Pink also carries a collection of cute workout leggings at the fraction of the price of lulus.

You get good grades, work hard and have a laundry list of extracurricular activities to fill your resume. However, in today’s growing job market, relevant work experience is crucial, and that’s where having a summer internship comes in handy. Through an internship, you gain valuable hands-on experience and get real world exposure, while having the liberty to learn along the way. However, don’t let this incredible opportunity go to waste. Know what role you’re stepping into and what is expected of you. Here are five things your summer internship boss wishes you knew before you started your internship.

1. Be prepared

It may seem like a no-brainer, but treat the first day of your internship like it’s the first day of a new job. Learn the company’s history, know the professional background of your boss and bring your best self to the table. This includes not only your work ethic, but also your attitude. Don’t bring problems to your boss, until you have at least one solution to offer. And above all else, use this opportunity as a chance to sharpen your networking and communication skills.

2. Communication is important

Being the new girl anywhere can be hard. You’re not sure if you’re asking too many questions or not enough. However, to learn, you have to make mistakes, and learning to communicate with those around you will only help you grow. Kristen Perrone, a senior at Siena College, was fortunate enough to have an internship at a company that encouraged communicated. “I was lucky to work in a very friendly and casual office setting. My boss was always checking in on me to make sure I had enough to do and that I was comfortable working there! I definitely wish I would have known that there was no reason to freak out about working with older and more experienced people because they were there to help me and make this experience as worthwhile as possible!” Don’t feel afraid to speak up and ask for help. Communication is the backbone of any good relationship.

3. Don’t make excuses

While speaking up when you’re not sure of what to do is important, don’t make excuses for your mistakes. You’re learning and your internship boss is aware of that. Morgan Mock, an assurance staff member and internship advisor at Ernest & Young, says, “Many interns, myself included when I was an intern, feel that they need to perform every task perfectly. When we review their work, they end up taking our comments personally when really we're just trying to coach them and help them understand the process. Basically, interns need to realize they won't be perfect and that it's oftentimes better for their development if they make mistakes and ask questions.” Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes but own up to them. In the end, your humility will help you stand out.

4. It might be summer, but this is not a vacation

While, you may start to develop some serious FOMO as your girlfriends start posting their perfectly filtered beach selfies, remember why you’re here. This summer internship is your chance to help you get a head start on your post-college plans and above all else, give you an edge on the competition in the job market. Remain professional and show up every day with the same excitement and fervor you had on the first day.

5. Take charge when you can

It may be easy to get hung up on the fact that you’re simply an intern, but no boss will ever complain about you putting in extra work. When the opportunity presents itself, take advantage of the extra hours. Hannah Herman, intern advisor and content and social media associate at Workato, says, “I wish they’d known before taking the role that interns are just as capable as anyone. Most people, I think, have this idea that an internship is mostly scut work -- data entry, fetching coffee and such. But the truth is that -- at least where I work -- interns are expected to contribute. And they do; they make a lot of invaluable contributions, because we trust them enough to give them real responsibilities. If you treat interns as capable adults, they'll step up to the plate and be...well, capable adults.”

By using your summer vacation as an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, you’re already showing your internship boss your level of drive and determination. Take that same work ethic you had when you applied for the position, and apply it to the internship. And as always, good luck collegiettes!

The Wedding Toast I Want to Give My Newlywed Friends

I’m a writer.

As in, I write everything down. My grocery list, my to-do list, my schedule for each day, and any words or phrases that I like.  My handbag houses three notebooks at all times, while countless memos fill my phone and sticky notes with chicken scratch have made permanent residence on my desk. This very article began in a red moleskin journal tucked between the beginnings of a social media calendar and a recipe for blueberry pancakes.

And often when I’m waiting for coffee or attempting to avoid small talk in the check-out line, I’ll pull out a notebook or begin to scroll through my memos and read through the things I’ve written down.

Most recently I found myself waiting in the Chicago airport during a thirty-minute layover, and a memo from New Year’s Eve 2016 caught my eye. It read, “Marriage is not hard. Life is hard.”

As I read the words over, my mind immediately flashed back to that night. To those words. My three college roommates and I found ourselves standing around my kitchen, eating spinach dip straight out of the pan, drinking beers and catching up on life.

Sherridan, the most fearless of the group, was telling us about her final semester of occupational therapy school, and her hopes to travel abroad for the summer. Courtney had just gotten engaged to her boyfriend of three years and as good friends do, we bombarded her with the usual questions, and we admired the new hardware that had made a home on her left hand. And Ciara brought us up to date with all the things newly-wed life had taught her. Ciara is soft spoken, but when she speaks, you listen, because it’s gold.

I found a window to get a word in and blurted out, “So, what’s the hardest thing about marriage?”

Without missing a beat, Ciara glanced across the room at her husband Austin, and simply said, “Marriage isn’t hard. Life is hard.” And as normal as I try to be in social settings, I threw my social graces out the window and frantically began to search for my phone. I jotted down those words into a new memo, enjoyed the rest of my evening and rang in 2017 surrounded by my favorite people.

I’m 24, so weddings are as frequent as hangovers for me. Some are equally painful.  I buy expensive placemats, put on a dress, and listen as my friends read their Hallmark vows about killing spiders and taking out the trash in the pouring rain, in exchange for eternal love. I clap along. I even laugh. But there is still so much I want to say to all my newlywed friends.

I want to say, first and foremost, you’re brave. You put your broken and bruised heart on a rusted platter and offered it to someone. And in return you accepted their equally tarnished life. That’s brave. That’s beautiful. That’s what I’m here to celebrate.

I want to say, there’s a reason they say today is the best day of your life. Because today, the real world wasn’t given an invitation. The real world wasn’t allowed to sit at your table, and the real world wasn’t allowed to bring reality as their plus one.

The real world is cancer, debt, unfaithfulness, weight gain and miscarriages.

The real world does not care how much you spent on flower arrangements or appetizers. The real-world quite frankly, sucks. On the best day of your life, I genuinely hope that the person you are walking up the aisle with, is the same person you can walk through the real world with.

I want to say, I hope you know your wedding is not the finish line, it’s the starting line. It’s the culmination of years of preparation for this day, despite the countless setbacks, but gracefully toeing the line, because the opportunity to run the race, is worth more than not trying at all.

I hope you know I’m standing on the sideline rooting for you.

I want to say, I hope you know the odds are stacked against you. Speaking strictly numbers, half of our friends who read those Hallmark vows, won’t keep them.  I hope you know marriage doesn’t equal success, and divorce doesn’t equal failure. I hope you know you’ll be in good company in whatever category you find yourself in years down the road.

And I hope you know marriage is not hard. Ciara can speak from experience. Marriage is an incredible gift that allows us to brave the real world with someone who knows our weaknesses. It’s the privilege of sharing our worst self with someone, every single day. And it’s the privilege that so many people, never get, and so many people are not even allowed. I hope you honor this gift and I hope you never take it for granted.

And despite all of this, despite what the real world will throw at you, I hope you damn well know, you’re still the protagonist of your life. You get to be invested in your story, because it is yours.  I will always be invested in your story and I so desperately cannot wait to turn the page, and see what you do next.

Cheers, love.

The newest season of The Bachelorette is about to drop, and we couldn't be more psyched about Rachel Lindsey's search for Mr. Right. It's easy to get caught up in the magical, champagne-doused world ABC has crafted—there are few better things in life than watching impeccably dressed, impossibly attractive men vie for the heart of an equally attractive woman. But the wildly popular TV show becomes all the more enjoyable when you're able to appreciate its supreme goofiness, shameless objectification and nonsensical setups. Here are 18 weird things to keep an eye out for on The Bachelorette.

1. Strange first impressions

Remember when Luke rode in on a unicorn? And how it actually (kind of) worked?

2. Annoyingly symmetrical muscly dudes…

Is it me or do they all start to blur together after a while?

Is it me or do they all start to blur together after a while?

3. With totally legit professions…

Part-time Canadian, full-time pancake enthusiast.

4. And whose shirts come off so easily

Maybe it's because they apply so much oil to their bodies?

This picture is from the Australian version of the show, but still.

5. Everyone is buff from a strict exercise regimen, which they are all too eager to show off

Seriously?! This is not real life.

6. The dates can be awkward AF

Tantric yoga? Anger-gasms?

7. Like really, super awkward

Nothing more normal than two adult men sumo wrestling each other on national television for the affections of a woman.

8. Forcing-your-suitors-to-dance-for-money awkward

I guess it shows how flexible they are?

9. JoJo literally watching a guy make out with a horse

I don't even know what to say.

10. Synchronized. Dancing.

Every group of guys is just a boy band waiting to happen.

11. When the Bachelorette simply cannot decide on a dude

Clearly she's having trouble distinguishing them because the audience sure is.

12. The show encourages people to, ahem, "spend the night" in the infamous "fantasy suite"

Wrong on so many levels.

13. Six to eight weeks is a reasonable amount of time to meet someone, fall in love and decide to spend the rest of your lives together

14. The contestants are extremely mature

15. In their defense, they are cooped up in a house with no access to the outside world

A very luxurious prison of sorts.

16. If everyone seems irrational, it's not like producers are pulling strings behind the scenes

*cough unreal cough*

17. Or plying everyone with tons of alcohol

Champagne problems, y'all.

18. TFW one of your baes proposes to you, but you picked someone else so you have to reject him

Whoops.

This behemoth of a franchise is beloved in spite of, or perhaps because of, the 18 reasons listed above. Even though numerous tropes are inevitable, there are always a few delightful surprises too. Don't miss the premiere of Season 13 on Monday, May 22 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
