Name: Lauren Berger
Job Title and Description: CEO + Founder of InternQueen.com
Website: internqueen.com
Twitter Handle: @internqueen
Instagram Handle:@internqueen
Youtube: @internqueen

What does your current job entail? Is there such thing as a typical day?

Lauren Berger:  My current job changes frequently. I am always either on the road, traveling, speaking, doing appearances, or book signings as the Intern Queen, and getting to interact with the hundreds of thousands of college students in the US. Or, I’m in the office, overseeing the website. We also run a marketing agency called IQ Marketing, which is where we help brands who are looking to engage with college students and we help them find campus ambassadors. So I oversee the website, our campus marketing agency. Of course, it’s my job to kind of be on the cutting edge for anything new that’s happening in the internship or job world.

What inspired you to start Intern Queen?

LB: I created this job, this position, this company, and everything I do today. It's all kind of made up to an extent, which is kind of amusing when you think about it. But I had 15 or 16 internships when I was in college, and every one of the internships—even the ones I wasn’t that excited about—taught me so much about who I wanted to be, both personally and professionally. And as a college graduate, I always felt myself looking for resources and coming up short. I couldn’t find a book on internships; I could hardly find any websites. I really wanted to start a better resource. So I started Intern Queen two years after graduating college, and I’ve been writing it ever since. So internqueen.com is a free website where young people can go to, not only read our internship advice, but they can apply for internship opportunities.

What is the best part of your job?

LB: I would say the best part of my job is that I’m still learning every single day. I haven’t hit a point where I’ve kind of peaked and said, “Oh, I already know how to do everything.” You know today I was on the phone with my web team, learning about a new email platform, something I had no idea how to do. So every day I’m learning something new and meeting new people and learning what their hopes and dreams are.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

LB: I think like a lot of people, I probably got a little too frustrated with rejection. I really just let rejection kind of get in my bones and drive me crazy, and I think I let that rejection hurt my confidence a little bit. I think a lot of college students going through the application process can kind of relate to that. We put too much pressure on one opportunity that we really think is for us. But sometimes that’s just not how it’s going to work out, so it’s important to have a plan B and a plethora of experiences and opportunities you’re going after when you’re applying for internships or jobs. Also, just remember that you have to get rejected to get to where you want to be. Everything successful I have ever done has started with getting rejected, as crazy as that sounds. So nowadays, when I get rejected, it’s a signal that I’m on the right path.

What is one thing that stands out on a resume to you?

LB:  I can usually tell within ten seconds of looking at a resume, maybe even earlier, if the person has tailored their resume for the position they’re applying for. An example is if you’re applying for something in fashion, like Michael Kors, I need to see something fashion on your resume. If I don’t see something fashion-related, I automatically assume you haven’t put any work into this resume, or you aren’t tailoring it for that position. So even if it’s that you did a fashion assignment in school, I want to see that and know that you’re trying really hard to connect the dots for me to show me why you should work for that company.

What do you look for when hiring someone?

LB: I think someone who is prepared, who has researched the company, and someone who has read the job description, as silly as that sounds. Some people don’t even read the job description anymore. And someone who is really keeping the interview focused on why they are the best person for the job. I think it’s really important that everyone has at least one or two questions to ask the employer at the end of the interview. Those questions should really be focused on what the employer is looking for in an intern or an entry-level candidate. You want the employer to leave the interview confident that the person they interviewed really understands the position and what they’re getting into. In 2016, going into 2017, so many people flake. They go into the interview and say they want the position and then they flake out because they don’t know what they signed up for or they just got busy or they applied for a bunch of other things. So I think it’s important for employers for candidates going into interviews that the candidate feels really focused, prepared and really serious about the position.

What advice would you give a 20-something with similar aspirations; someone who wants to be an entrepreneur like you?

LB: I would say that if I’m talking to all of the young entrepreneurs out there, I would say to use your college time to do as much research, prep and planning you can. You can start a business in college or you don’t have to start a business in college; you don’t need to put pressure on yourself to start a business in college. But you can utilize some of that extra time you have in college—and I know a lot of college students are reading this and thinking, “Oh, I don’t have any time.”—but I mean use the weekends, in the morning, late at night because in college you don’t go out until 11 p.m. Use that time you have to plan, to craft, to research. I didn’t really do that so I had to spend time doing that as a young business owner when I could’ve been putting the pedal to the metal moving forward. So I would just reiterate doing research, reading books on the subject you’re interested in and just preparing as much as you can before launching that business.

You Have to See What Kate Middleton Wore on the BAFTAs Red Carpet

When it comes to British royalty, Kate Middleton will always be my favorite. I mean, between her poise, personality, and her ability to give back, she really seems like she would make the perfect best friend. Oh and I also wouldn't mind borrowing her clothes.

In her latest "wow" ensemble, Middleton looked absolutely flawless on the BAFTAs red carpet wearing a black floral gown by Alexander McQueen.

According to Cosmopolitan, there were rumors going around that the royal couple would not attend because the "organizers feared she would detract attention" from the actors and nominees" but luckily for us, that was not the case.

Can you say dress #goals?

The 17 Best Looks From the 2017 Grammy Red Carpet

There were a few standouts from last night; sequins, unexpected cutouts, sheer material and asymetrical dresses. While many of the celebs at the 2017 Grammy Awards had dresses that were similar in nature, everyone was able to let their own personal style shine on the red carpet.

1. Paris Jackson

I love the simple, strappy heel that Jackson paired with this asymmetrical striped dress!

2. Rihanna

Rihanna's mini crop top accentuates her tattoo perfectly, while her floor-length skirt dresses up the look for the red carpet.

3. Carrie Underwood

Take a cue from Carrie, and don’t shy away from some daring cutouts in unexpected places.

4. Demi Lovato

Demi’s stunning hair makes me want to go out and buy some hair extensions ASAP!

5. Kelsea Ballerini

TBH this gown is probably nicer than anything I’ll ever wear in my life.

6. Chrissy Teigen

I can already sense that cutouts are going to be the trend of 2017.

7. Lea Michele

Michele's simple hair and makeup let this stunning dress shine.

8. Kat Graham

Asymmetrical sequined dresses were the real winners of the show tonight.

9. Sophie Beem

A modern twist on a stunning Mother Nature-esque jumpsuit.

10. Taraji P. Henson

I could see myself wearing this for a formal or something?

11. Kristin Cavallari

I'm obsessed with this sheer twist on the classic black slit dress.

12. Cassadee Pope

Pope can’t be ignored in this gorgeous metallic dress.

13. Lady Gaga

From pop princess to heavy metal rockstar, Gaga proves that there's nothing she can’tdo.

14. Nicole Trunfio

I love how Trunfio matched her lipstick shade to her dress, but kept the look classic by keeping her accessories to a minimum.

15. Cee Lo Green

While I can’t bring myself to call this look stylish, there's no doubt that this look brought Green some attention on this red carpet…

16. Beyoncé, Queen

Dressed like the goddess she is.

17. Blue Ivy Carter, Princess

Whaaaat this outfit is the best thing everrrr. Ded.

Adele Had the Best Time After Accidentally Breaking Her Album of the Year Grammy

That Mean Girls scene where Cady Heron breaks her Spring Fling crown and shares the pieces with her classmates is classic. So classic that it seems every major award show references it in some way. With Adele going on and on about how Beyoncé deserved the Album of the Year Grammy more than her, I thought she was leaning toward sharing it with Queen B. She almost did—but not on purpose.

Shortly after finishing up what was the final acceptance speech of the night, Adele accidentally broke her Grammy statue in half. And she seemed to be totally amused by the situation, which is sooo Adele.

It would have been easy to give half to Bey and keep the other half for herself, but it seems The Recording Academy was waiting in the wings with a shiny replacement Grammy.

She could at least give the broken one to Beyoncé…

11 Times I Wished I Was in Beyoncé's Womb During the Grammys

If you ever had any doubt that Beyoncé is a legit QUEEN, the 2017 Grammys should've been enough to prove it, once and for all. Although Bey didn't sweep every category she was nominated in, she still reigned supreme. The truly lucky ones in the room were Beyoncé's twins, though. These 11 moments made me wish I could take their place.

1. When she taught us about mothers

2. When she came out to perform looking like this

3. When she did this chair stunt and wasn't even scared

4. When people were literally bowing down to her

5. When she gave that powerful speech about representation

6. When Blue Ivy cheered for Bey after her Best Urban Contemporary Album win and I was like, "That could be me"

7. When I realized Blue Ivy was dressed like Prince

8. And then she did Carpool Karaoke

Being Bey's kid is the best!

9. When Adele asked if B could be her mother and everyone in the world said, "ME TOO"

10. When a single tear ran down her cheek as Adele lauded her

11. When Beyoncé's friendship with Adele was on full display, giving us all something to live for

Everyone looked great on the red carpet at the 2017 Grammys last night, but did anyone else get the feeling that they had seen some of these looks before?

1. Makeup Brush

Katy Perry's outfit combo reminds me of this stunning rose gold and pink makeup brush that I wish I had in my collection!

2. Vintage Pillow

Solange Knowles' dress could blend right into a 1920s-inspired living room!

3. Ms. Frizzle From The Magic School Bus

Taraji P. Henson looks like she's about to take her class on a magical, educational field trip...

4. Elvis Presley

The queen of comedy, Margaret Cho, stole her look from the king of rock & roll last night.

5. Jessica Rabbit

Charlie XCX's dress could take her straight from the red carpet to a Jessica Rabbit cosplay party.

6. Disco Ball

Heidi Klum was the life of the party in this disco-ball inspired dress.

7. Rapunzel

Elle King could be the real-life double of your favorite Disney princess! Their crowns are identical... and are really encouraging me to go use the Snapchat flower crown filter right now.

8. Glitter Slime

Kaya Jones took the glitter slime trend to a whole new level.

9. Janice From The Muppets

"Mah na mah na" is all I have to say.

The 33 Stages of Spring Break, As Told by Taylor Swift Lyrics

$

Spring break finally arrived, and not a minute too soon. You've been drowning in school work, roommate drama and internship searches, and nothing sounds more perfect than laying on a beach with a fruity cocktail in hand. All of that stuff you've been worrying about? It's time to shake it off.

Your friends are SO jealous that you're going away for the break, but you're too excited to even care.

You couldn't even think about your classes right now if you tried. Your mind is in total Spring Break Mode.

The budget flight you bought is packed and uncomfortable, but you don't care because you'll get there so soon!

When you and your friends finally get to the hotel, you hastily throw your bags into your room and run to the beach.

You take a deep breath and decide you're ready to forget about everything going on at home. Time to party!

One sip of that first daiquiri and everything but happiness just melts away.

You and your friends are ready to meet some guysmaybe even have a fling.

You all swear to each other that you'll be the best wing-women ever.

You give yourself a pep talk as you get ready for a night out at the clubs. It's all about confidence! Channel it!

You put on your absolute hottest outfit, and girl, you look GOOD.

All you want to do is dance your troubles away in celebration of this glorious spring break.

You might even start to show off your moves a little too much after a few drinks, but your friends tell you when to ease up.

And you might take it down a notch, but you're definitely not going to stop dancing.

When you spot a cute guy, you're ready with a flirty, fun line to get his attention.

You're in the middle of a dance floor make-out before you can even introduce yourself.

It's spring break though, so you're just looking for a fling. You tell him that you're not looking for a relationship, obvi.

JK though, you totally can't help yourself.

When you wake up in the morning and remember how you acted last night, you're just like...

Not to mention that intense hangover that greeted you like the insanely bright sunshine outside of your window as soon as you opened your eyes. You feel totally sick.

You friends sit around sharing stories from last night, half-laughing and half-freaking out.

You decide it's time to break up with alcohol.

Your equally hungover friends agreenone of you will never drink again.

Well...At least, you don't drink until your hangover goes away late that afternoon. Then you're back on the Bahama Mama train.

Last night is over. Forget about it! It's a new night!

None of you have a worry in the world, and you're so ready to take on the rest of spring break without a hitch.

Hangovers can't keep you down!

You're feeling like spring break will never end.

You all put on cute outfits and are ready for another night out together (and you get the perfect Insta together before you leave, of course).

Every night of the break feels worry-free, like nothing could go wrong.

You're having too much fun to worry about sleeping, duh.

Then, suddenly, it's your last night, and you remember that you'll have to go home soon.

But you can't even be sad about it, because this spring break has been the absolute best.

You tell all of your friends how much you loved it, and how perfect it was. Goodbye has never been so sweet. Breaks may end, but Facebook albums last forever.

Vanessa from 'The Bachelor' Has Been Keeping a Secret That'll Probably Change Your Mind About Her

If you're the type of casual Bachelor fan who never bothers to learn the contestants' last names, you're probably saving yourself from a few headaches. But this also keeps you from deep-diving into the contestants' pasts and discovering all their dirty laundry, which is honestly one of the best parts of each season.

Known to you as merely Vanessa, this season's Vanessa Grimaldi seems to be winning Nick over week after week, and her zero-gravity, puke-filled one-on-one made us fall in love with her. But Vanessa has been keeping a secret and it's pretty much unforgivable. She's…an…actress.

This weekend an unsuspecting fan spotted Vanessa while watching Blue Mountain State.

Which led others to find her IMDb page. This says it all, folks. Not only did Vanessa play "Girl" in Blue Mountain State, but she had two other roles in Being Human and Ascension

Now, Vanessa hasn't had an IMDb-worthy acting role since 2014 and her career on the show is listed as special education teacher, so it's still possible she really did come on The Bachelor to find love. But who am I kidding? This information is permanently etched in my brain, where it will corrode my perceptions for the remainder of the season.

Yale Will Rename Calhoun College After a Groundbreaking Female Computer Scientiest

Yale University is renaming one of its residential colleges, removing the name of a staunch supporter of slavery and replacing it with the name of a groundbreaking female computer scientist, according to USA Today.

The college, which was built in the 1930s, was named after prominent slave owner John C. Calhoun. Calhoun graduated from Yale in 1804 and went on to serve in several government positions, including as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He vehemently opposed the abolition of slavery, once calling the institution "a positive good."

Obviously, many students didn't like having to live in a building named for a guy who believed people of color were less human than white people. so now the college will be renamed after Grace Murray Hopper, a renowned computer scientist who earned both her master's and PhD from Yale in the 1930 and 1934. She has an annual conference for women and computing named after her.

Protests broke out over the name in 2015, after the mass shooting in Charleston, according to USA Today. But the name has been controversial for decades.

Yale University president Peter Salovey insisted in April that he wouldn't change the name. But in August, he created the Committee to Establish Principles on Renaming, which considered questions of when renaming would be appropriate.

“At that time, as now, I was committed to confronting, not erasing, our history. I was concerned about inviting a series of name changes that would obscure Yale’s past,” Salovey wrote in a post on Yale’s website.

The university’s board of trustees voted to change the college’s name from Calhoun to Hopper on Friday, and students started celebrating immediately. They taped over Calhoun’s name on a sign for the college, writing Hopper’s name on the tape. And they also added another piece of tape to the bottom of the sign, saying, “Victory!!” It feels good to make change happen.

This New Dating App Will Match You With Someone Who Hates the Same Things You Do

$
0
0

Relationships are founded on common interests, right? Usually we take "common interests" to mean liking the same things, but new app Hater will match you based on what you say you hate.

Hater doesn’t have a biographical section for users to fill out, instead asking them to answer whether they like, love, dislike, or hate various topics (the app has over 2,000 of them). After a few minutes, your profile will be made up of your choices, which will then be used to match you to other users.

The idea for the app actually comes from the creator’s idea for a comedy sketch, parodying dating apps. “When I pitched it,” app creator Brendan Alper told The Washington Post about the sketch, “people encouraged me to pursue it as an actual idea.”

The most hated topics since the app launched last Tuesday are the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump, bullies, hangovers, high rent, and those people who walk in front of you on the sidewalk really slowly.

Even though the app is based on things people hate, don’t think that users are hateful people, or that they are allowed to get away with hate speech. If they do, they’ll be reported.

“We want to be edgy, but recognize that it’s all in good fun,” Alper told the Post.

There’s actual science to support the idea behind the app. A 2006 study found that participants would form a closer relationship when they both hated the same person, than they would when they shared a love for something else. That won't be surprising to anyone who's bonded with a new best friend in class over a mutual hatred of your obnoxious group project member.

The timing of the app’s release can’t be a coincidence. For cynical, single people who don’t want to celebrate love (and pink, and hearts) on Valentine’s Day, the Hater app is the perfect alternative. Go forth and hate!

Misty Copeland's New Line for Under Armour Is Perfect for Your Workout

Misty Copeland, the first African-American woman to become a principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater, has launched an amazing line with Under Armour. Her take on activewear sets a very ballet meets badass vibe that you totally need in your life. Misty created this collection in an effort to introduce clothing that will take you from street style to the gym efortlessly.

As Copeland has told Vogue, “I'm not in clothes for very long periods of time, because I literally have something to wear to the studio and then I’m in a leotard and tights for eights hours of the day. So all these pieces fit into my everyday streetwear.”

Her 13-piece line is definitely trendy enough for Misty's high-pressure life, whether she's in the studio or hanging with her friends. Prices range from $45 to $200 and are absolutely justified, considering the cool and wide range of designs the dancer has come up with. From strappy sports bras to (totally wearable) harem joggers in the trendiest colors, Misty's collection screams athleisure—which is so in, btw.

Traditional ballet wear turned cool-girl workout gear is exactly what this collection is all about. So if you're looking for street style pieces that will keep you comfortable and ready for surprise workouts, look no further.

An Open Letter to the Guy Who Loves an Independent Girl

$
0
0

I never understood those girls who just hop from one SO to the next, who simply cannot be alone. I think that’s the main problem with technology. Social media means we never have to be alone. The constant need for attention and co-dependency is granted through “likes” on Instagram and swipes on Tinder. As long as we have a cell phone in our pocket, we never have to feel lonely.

But what about the girls who cherish those moments in between relationships? The ones who define success through self-fulfillment? Who need to feel solely responsible for themselves and their decisions? The girls who believe an SO is not a necessity, but a luxury?

Independent girls are picky girls. I’ve been single for most of my life and am perfectly happy to remain that way. As a result, I don’t take crap from anyone. I’m comfortable being on my own, so I’m not willing to jump into a relationship with someone who doesn’t treat me well. Being independent doesn’t mean I’m anti-relationship, it just means I’ve had time to realize my own worth.

If I do enter into a relationship, it has to be based on mutual understanding. I am my own person, just as you are; we have our own goals and ambitions, and that’s okay. I don’t see what good can come from sacrificing my individual goals for the betterment of the relationship. I don't want to feel guilty about pursuing my dreams. I'm here to support and encourage you, but also challenge you. Just because I love you doesn’t mean I have to agree with everything you say or do.

That’s the No. 1 trick to loving an independent girl: just because she’s in a relationship doesn’t mean she has to stop being independent. She’s going to need some time to herself. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you, that’s just what she’s used to. You don’t have to worry about texting her every second (it would probably just annoy her anyway). She’s perfectly happy taking herself out for dinner or going to the mall alone. And, honestly, boys' night is strongly encouraged. Neediness and clinginess are so foreign that they become frustrating. Remember to take some time apart to live your individual lives.

At times, I may seem so self-reliant and in control that you may wonder whether I even need you in my life. I do. I’m comfortable being alone, but that doesn’t mean I always want to be. I still like lots of affection, and being told how much I’m loved. I still prefer to be the little spoon. I’ll be the handyman if you kill the spiders. No matter how independent I am, there’s nothing wrong with having someone else put a little effort in for me, too.

This Designer Gave His NYFW Show an Epic Feminist Finale

America is in a state of unrest that can make things like award shows and fashion feel frivolous and tone-death. It's in this atmosphere that designer Prabal Gurung presented his new collection at New York Fashion Week. The runway show unfolded like any other, showcasing Gurung's distinctive silhouettes, but ended by making an overt political statement. Models including Bella Hadid and Candice Huffine donned t-shirts whose messages ranged from "The Future Is Female" to "Stronger Than Fear" and "Nevertheless She Persisted," while some of the closing looks were completed by the Planned Parenthood buttons that designers were encouraged to include during NYFW.

How to Style Every T-Shirt You Own

T-shirts are timeless and essential, especially for college students. It takes a lot of effort to put on jeans and a nice top for early morning classes, and frankly, we don’t usually put forth that effort. You’re lucky if you even make it to class on time. T-shirts are comfy and convenient, so why sacrifice comfort to look stylish? Luckily, you don’t have to. Next time you’re tempted to wear your T-shirt with a pair of worn-out sweats, make it a little more chic with these styling tips for every kind of tee you own.

Graphic Tees

Still cold outside? Wear your favorite graphic tee by with a duster coat, high-waisted jeans, and a pair of sleek, heeled boots to stay warm.

A striped tee paired with true-blue skinnies and casual sneakers is a classic outfit; you don’t need to add any jewelry or statement accessories to make this work.

Can’t bring yourself to part with your sweatpants? No problem. A fitted striped tee looks great with plain sweats or even a pair with a muted pattern.

To give off a high-fashion vibe, pair your favorite striped T-shirt with black overalls or skinnies and a statement choker.

Oversized Tees

If you haven't noticed, Donald Trump has a knack for being awkward in certain situations. Whether it's tweeting about the "easy d" or wearing a tie that is too long for his body, he really is just an awkward character. I mean, really awkward.

Although he makes us cringe more often than not, it's kinda hard not to find enjoyment out of his behavior. Especially when it involves him and other world class leaders. Today, after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the two shared a handshake that, at first glance, seemed totally normal.

But after slowing down the footage, the internet discovered that it was anything but normal. In fact, it looks like Trudeau definitely does not want to be shaking Trump's hand at all.

Here are some of the best Tweets to come out of this ~historic~ moment.

Beyoncé is queen, there is no doubt about it. With her voice, her style, and her beauty, no one can argue that she is not amazing in all possible ways. If you need evidence for some weird reason, just look at her performance from this year's Grammy Awards.

I mean, come on, she's flawless. If you are like me and are wondering how you can replicate that perfection for your own, then you are in luck.

When speaking with Cosmopolitan, Bey's makeup artist, Sir John, revealed all of the products that he used on her skin and tbh, we are a bit surprised how affordable they are! In fact, Cosmo reports that everything that went into Beyoncé's makeup look for her performance can be bought at your local drugstore. Yup, that's correct. Even us normal people can ~shine~ like a diamond.

According to TMZ, at least "15 people filed complaints within the past 2 weeks with the Better Business Bureau", claiming that they smelled "chemicals and glue" upon opening Kylie's Royal Peach Eyeshadow Palette. Oh boy.

But apparently, the Better Business Bureau already launched an investigation into the issue and said that it is the packaging, according to Seventeen. Kylie Cosmetics has not yet commented on the issue but hopefully, they will make a change, especially because it was a few weeks ago when the smells started
