Tina Fey & Amy Poehler's Opening Monologue at the Golden Globes

How to Look Like You’re Not Wearing Makeup

We’ve all seen girls overdo it on their beauty routine, slathering on whatever they can find in their makeup bag. But there’s no need to pile on the products for your everyday look! When it comes to wearing makeup, sometimes less is more. If you’re trying to appear put-together without going over the top, follow HC’s tips for how to look au naturel.

Skin

The key to any great look starts with your skin. Instead of resorting to cakey powders and other thick cover-up options, bring out your natural glow instead. If you can’t fathom leaving home without putting on a dab of coverage, don’t worry! You can still look natural and wear a full face of makeup.

Products

Lisa Owens, a Metro-Detroit-area makeup artist and licensed aesthetician, recommends using tinted moisturizer instead of other dense foundations to provide coverage without looking and feeling weighed down.

“It’s a two-for-one: you get your moisturizer and you get sheer coverage,” she says. “It can help reduce redness and smaller problem areas to give you a flawless finish.  You don’t have to cover [tinted moisturizer] with powder, and so it will leave a natural-looking finish to the skin. It looks very under-done, which is nice.”

Clinique’s Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer ($27) or Stila’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer ($32) are perfect products to try out.

For collegiettes with tricky, more pronounced problem areas, such as harsh redness, breakouts or scarring, Owens says using mineral makeup, including light powders, will help you to flawlessly cover problem areas up and achieve a more natural look.

Bare Escentuals is a big one that is recommended, “ she says. “Many drugstore brands carry [mineral-based makeups], too. They are naturally derived mineral pigments that you brush into the skin with a Kabuki brush. By brushing it on, you get a nice, airbrushed finish to the skin. It appears more matte-like compared to the tinted moisturizer, and so it offers more coverage.”

Kelsey Pomeroy, a sophomore at Ohio State University, says she achieves her natural, everyday look with a few key products. “For a really easy, everyday look, I use Garnier BB Cream as a light foundation and finish by brushing Revlon PhotoReady translucent finisher over top. It evens out my complexion, but still looks sheer and natural.”

Matching and application

It can be frustrating to go through beauty product after beauty product and still be left without the right color for your skin tone. But it will pay off when you find a match!  Remember when people used to tell you to dab makeup onto your hand in order to see what looks best? Owens says this trick is a thing of the past, and has new tips for matching foundations and concealers.

“If you are considering a color or two, definitely take a sample of the product before buying,” Owens says. “If it’s a liquid, put a little bit on your fingers and start on your jaw and drag it down onto your neck. You should see no difference [for a match].”

You should also test out the product in natural lighting to see if it’s the right shade for you (and to avoid looking orange once you step outside!). Once you’ve found a flattering, natural-looking color, the next step is the application process.

“If you want a natural look, you need to focus on more targeted applications,” Owens says. “You don’t want to blanket your face in the whole product! Usually, I will focus on correcting under-eye circles, covering blemishes, etc., and so I don’t necessarily put the foundation and concealer on the entire face… that can end up looking mask-y.”

Another quick tip: for liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers, stay away from sponge applicators because they make it harder to blend and your makeup will appear blotchy once finished. Large brushes work wonders to buff the color into your skin evenly.

For your natural look, don’t toss aside your favorite bronzers. You can still look like you’re wearing minimal makeup and have some glowing color.

“As far as bronzing, you want to hit the areas on the face that sun would naturally hit, such as the bridge of your nose, right underneath your cheekbones, on the chin and the center of the forehead,” Owens says. “You don’t really want to go more than a shade and a half to two shades darker than your skin tone if you’re trying to be really natural about it. It’s a great way to get a healthy glow to the skin without looking overly done.”

According to Owens, the tool you use to apply blush and bronzer is just as important as finding the right face makeup color. “If you use a nice, fluffy, dense brush, and you really work the product in and blend it, it’s going to look a lot more natural than if you just swipe it on and skip blending."

Eyes

It’s time to learn to love what you’ve got and play up your natural coloring. Let your eyes do the talking and use shadows that will take a complementary role, not overshadow what’s already there!

First, primer makes a huge difference when trying to achieve a natural eye. “Priming the eyelid is going to be a great step because it’s going to perfect and get rid of any discoloration or redness,” Owens says.  Give Mary Kay’s Eye Primer ($20) a try!

When choosing eye shadow colors, Owens recommends sticking close to your natural skin tone. Depending on your tone, you will look for shades that are creamy and taupe or light bronze and soft charcoal. Too Faced has a perfect neutral shadow palette ($36).

Owens says Urban Decay’s Naked Palette ($52) is versatile for every look. “It’s very easy to work with, and you can take it from a very natural look to a very dramatic look,” she says. “The palette will take you many places!”

If you want to wake up your eyes and make them pop, you can play with subtly highlighting them.  “Once you choose and apply a neutral shade [to the lid], use a darker color in the crease and highlight the inner corner of your eye and underneath your brow bone [with a lighter color] to help accentuate the eye without looking overdone,” Owens says.

We all know girls who draw on eyeliner so thick that you can barely see their eyes. For your everyday look, why not try tightlining instead?

“Line the inner rim of your upper lash line and work it into the lashes themselves,” Owens says. “It can create a lot of definition [and] make your lashes appear darker and fuller without looking like you’ve done dramatic makeup.”

Lips

There are many ways to flaunt bold lip color when the time, outfit and occasion are right. For your everyday makeup look, it’s important to stick with a nude color that’s effortless and flattering. Every collegiette’s nude shade is going to be different, whether it’s a rosy pink, a shade of mauve or a shade of brown.

Lipsticks with beige, peach or pink undertones will be the best options for achieving nude, natural color. For lighter-skinned collegiettes, beige undertones will complement your complexion nicely and prevent a washed-out look. Darker-skinned ladies should look into shades with peach and pink undertones.

If you’d rather skip the lipstick, you can polish off your look with a sheer gloss.

Owens recommends Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer ($5) or CoverGirl’s Jumbo Gloss Balm ($6.89-$6.99) for natural-looking hydration and a glossy finish.

There’s nothing wrong with sporting a fresh face. Pretty soon it’ll be your favorite accessory! We’ve seen everyone from celebs and fashion models to collegiettes tossing aside their normal makeup regimen to go back to an au naturel look. What do you think of this growing beauty trend? Have any tips to share? Comment below!

Collegiette Eats: Seared Ahi Tuna

Sick of eating cereal and ramen for lunch and dinner? Want to spend less money eating out and finally start cooking for yourself? Put down that frozen pizza, because HC’s Health Editor, Sammie Levin, is here to share her daily eats so you can get ideas for healthy, satisfying meals that are easy enough for any time-strapped collegiette to make. After you read Collegiette Eats, your taste buds, wallet and waistline will thank you.

Breakfast

Yesterday was my first day of classes for the semester, so I had to start it off with a good breakfast. I had two pieces of toasted Ezekiel bread with almond butter. I topped one with sliced banana and the other with sliced strawberry and sprinkled both with chia seeds and cinnamon. I popped them in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds so that the almond butter would melt a little. Yummm.

Lunch

For lunch, I sautéed onions, mushrooms, kale and spinach in olive oil and garlic. Then I added a few cherry tomatoes and chunks of avocado and topped it with a fried egg. Simple, but very satisfying.

Dinner

My friend cooked dinner for me and a few friends last night, and he is quite the chef. He made seared ahi tuna and served it with hummus, spicy mayo and tomatoes. Hummus and fish may sound like a weird combo, but it was actually really tasty! He seasoned the tuna with salt and pepper and coated it in sesame seeds, and then seared it by putting it in a pan with olive for just about 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side. Not only does tuna taste good, but it's good for you too, filled with protein, omega-3s and various vitamins and minerals. You can read about the health benefits of tuna here

I want to try making seared tuna myself sometime soon because it was delicious and is ready to eat so quickly! It can be a hassle to wait a half hour to an hour for something to bake in the oven, so if you're in a rush, then seared tuna is a great, healthy dinner option. And it looks really fancy, too, so you can impress your roommates without actually having to do much-especially since when you tell them you're making tuna, they'll probably picture canned tuna, so you'll set the bar pretty low. Sounds like a good deal to me!

5 Tips for Landing an Internship

Today’s job market is more competitive than ever, and joining the real world can be intimidating enough without the added pressures of getting a killer job after graduation. With an internship, you can get valuable experience to enhance your resume and become a competitive candidate for your dream job!

Dream Careers is a global internship program that places students at coveted internships, making internships more accessible and getting rid of the logistical concerns that usually plague the internship process. Dream Careers gives college students access to more than 10,000 internships, 3,800 employers and a wide variety of industries so you can have the opportunity to try out an industry, a city or a specific company. These internships are located in seven major cities in the U.S. and three major cities overseas. In addition to setting you up with an amazing internship, Dream Careers will arrange housing, meals, transportation and career training for you to make your transition even easier.

Ryan Kahn, a former career coach for Dream Careers and star of MTV’s hit show HIRED, says that “the way to your dream career is not always a straight path, but what’s important is that you’re traveling in the right direction. An internship is your first step in that direction.” Read on for Kahn’s five surefire tips for getting an internship!

1. Network Like a Pro

Kahn says that the more relationships you have, the better you set yourself up for referrals and future job connections. Connect with your friends and your parents’ friends to network and score a great internship. If the people around you recognize you as a hard worker and a “go-getter,” they will want you to intern for their companies! Build a great reputation with the people around you and you will be rewarded with more opportunities and referrals when you find an internship you’re really excited about.

2. Hit Up the Career Center

Your campus’s career center can be an excellent resource for discovering internship opportunities and getting your resume and cover letters edited. Career centers often coordinate job fairs for you to get your name out there, talk to some possible employers and explore industries that you might be interested in. Most campus career centers also have on-campus advisers who will take appointments or hold drop-in hours to help you select the right career path as well as the academic path that will help you get there.

Don’t be shy; approach the career center early on in college! Don’t think that your career center is only there to help seniors get full-time jobs. Even when you’re a freshman or sophomore, your career center can be extremely helpful for picking your major and figuring out what you want to do after graduation.

3. Use a Professional Placement Program

Internship programs like Dream Careers have networked with some of the largest companies in the world and have established relationships with them, so they can help you get your foot in the door. Often, the hardest part of internship hunting is getting your foot in the door, so take advantage of programs that will help you do so!

4. Check Out Online Resources

Take matters into your own hands and search online internship listing databases for positions. Websites like Indeed source postings from all over the web to provide a comprehensive list of which internships are available to you. When applying online, you’ll often be competing against a large applicant pool, so make your cover letter and resume shine by highlighting your most relevant experience and qualifications. Put your Internet skills to good use and use them to plan your next career move!

5. Use a Targeted Approach

If you’d like to intern for a specific company, find its website and contact the hiring manager or internship coordinator directly. From there, the company’s representative will point you in the right direction towards internship opportunities. Contacting someone at the company directly will demonstrate your interest and proactive attitude, so don’t be afraid to take a chance and go after the internship you have your sights set on!

Internships are a great opportunity for you to try out an industry and gain experience for your future career. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and seize every opportunity available to you!

10 Conversation Starters for Even the Most Painful First Dates

You can only read the menu so many times before eventually deciding on the lasagna, lowering the wine list, and making grown-up conversation with your date.  For the nights when the witty dialogue you rehearsed in front of the mirror is failing you, pull out these go-to conversation starters to silence the metaphorical crickets.

family

“Tell me about your family. Brothers? Sisters?”

Families are complicated. Everyone has a crazy uncle or a messy divorce or a long-lost twin that they’re not trying to bring up over appetizers. But they also have funny stories that you’ll relate to—who hasn’thad a weird family secret revealed at Thanksgiving after Grandma got a little too tipsy. By asking about his family without prying or probing, you can learn a lot about your date.  And maybe even his equally handsome long-lost twin!

“So are you a movie person or a TV person?”

Warning: Do not ask this question if your taste in either movies or TV shows is incredibly lame. (“Oh you like The Godfather? I’m a huge fan of Stomp The Yard…”) But, if you watch a show you’re not embarrassed to admit you enjoy—generally speaking this excludes all Bravo, TLC, and Oxygen programming—ask away.  And don’t let him get away with worshipping Weeds when everyone knows Breaking Bad is better.

“What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on?”

traveling road trip

You don’t need to have traveled the world to have interesting stories from amazing trips. Don’t hate on your date if he hasn’t been to Milan, but think twice if he can’t stop talking about a sleazy spring break booze cruise.  Maybe he went on an “epic” road trip with the boys, or a family-vacation-turned-awesome—it’ll get you talking!

“Have you ever been on a truly horrible date? I feel like they’re fake, right?! Like out of bad chick flicks.”

As long as his answer isn’t, “Well, I mean, this date is up there,” you’re good to go. Either he hasn’t been on any horrible dates (in which case he’ll admire your perceptive observation) or he has hilarious stories (in which case you can laugh at another girl’s misfortune… oh, relax, no one needs to name names).

“So how’d you pick this place [or activity]? Is there a story there?”

Even if the castle you’re touring isn’t his family’s summer property (it could happen!), chances are there’s a reason he brought you to that particular spot.  Whether there’s a great story behind the linguini with clams or it’s just his favorite restaurant, you’ll spark conversation. And finally find out why he insisted you order the linguini with clams.

“I fully acknowledge that this is a nerdy question, but do you have any good book recommendations? I actually need something new to read.”

Not every guy is a reader, so this question is not meant to be a test whereby you judge his intellectualism and self-worth.  If he’s never read Dostoevsky or Faulkner, that’s OK.  But maybe you’ve both read something recently that you can chat about or recommend.  Don’t turn the date into a book club—at least not without inviting me!—but literature and romance have been known to produce one another.  And it gives you something to talk about.

puppy adorable golden lab

“Are you an animal person? I feel like the world can be separated into animal lovers versus non self-identifying animal lovers.”

Follow-up questions include (but are not limited to): Cats or Dogs? Kittens or Puppies? Best YouTube animal video? Did you have an animal growing up? Oh, you’re allergic to animals and this was a weird thing to ask? Oh, I just came across as a crazy cat lady? Let’s move on…

“OK this is the deal breaker: what was the first CD you bought? No judgment.”

A nice point of entry into the “let’s talk about music and find out we both love the Beatles and then make out” conversation, without being so upfront.  No shame in admitting you saved up three weeks worth of allowance for a Spice Girls CD, because chances are at one point he knew every word to every Blink 182 single.

“What’d you do last summer?”

i know what you did last summer movie

Asking what someone studies is boring. Asking what someone wants to “be when they grow up” puts the person on the spot.  Asking your date what he did last summer (besides being vaguely evocative of the 1997 horror movie) let’s him talk about his life in a concrete, interesting way.  Whether it’s humbly sharing top-secret information from a trendy internship or making you laugh with stories from a dead-end job, this question sets your date up for success.

“Were you a Disney Channel Original Movie guy? One Saturday Morning? No? Just me? You didn’t grow up on Hey Arnold and Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

Nothing bonds two strangers like nostalgic reminiscence. And this is a discerning question to ask because, if he grew up in the United States between the years 1990 and 2000 and doesn’thave fond memories of Boy Meets World, you probably want to end things now.

If you can talk to your grandparent’s friends, you can talk to anyone.  Ask questions, resort to fallback topics, share stories from your own life, and remember that you’re on a date and not a job interview.  So show some cleavage.  Just kidding… kind of. Have fun.

The 2014 Golden Globes aired this past Sunday and with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts, the show was bound to be hilarious. Here are our favorite moments of the 2014 Golden Globes, told in GIFs.

The single most important event of the night happened before the awards even began: Jennifer Lawrence photobombed Taylor Swift.

Jennifer Lawrence was named Amy Poehler’s alter ego and she loved it.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was too cool for everyone in the TV section and Reese Witherspoon.

America’s sweetheart won the first award of the night and had the most adorable reaction ever.

Diddy offered his advice.

And overstayed his welcome on stage.

And pretended that he was friends with Bono.

We learned that they serve hot dogs at the Golden Globes and that Julia Louis-Dreyfus really is the coolest.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin had the worst date night ever.

Tina and Amy won the night with this George Clooney joke.

And Sandy loved it.

Tina Fey introduced her illegitimate son. Who looked for his father.

Emma Thompson became every woman’s hero.

Matt Damon owned being a garbage man.

Amy Poehler got a massage from Bono.

And made out with him when she won. Finally, she won!

Normally dissing Taylor Swift would be like kicking a puppy, but Tina and Amy did it with subtly.

Check out why here!

9 Hot Hollywood Guys You Need to Know About

$
0
0

Sure, we all adore Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (some more than others); however, there's a new slew of actors out there ready to make us swoon. From vampires to superheroes, there’s an untapped pool of actors worthy of your love. Check out these nine new Hollywood hotties to put on your celeb radar!

1. Colton Haynes

Can you hear that? That’s the sound of panties dropping at the very sight of Colton Haynes’ blue eyes.

Colton, previously an Abercrombie & Fitch model (can you say “Abercrombie Abs”?!), got his first major role in MTV’s Teen Wolf as Jackson Whittemore. He currently stars in the television series Arrow, a drama on CW following the DC Comics character Green Arrow. Colton plays Roy Harper, who was Green Arrow’s sidekick Speedy in the comics.

As if being both an actor and model weren’t enough, Haynes sings, too! This Kansas-born triple threat is one to watch in 2014. Luckily, Colton will continue to grace our eyes as a regular character in the second season of Arrow.

2. Jamie Dornan

You’ve been warned: Jamie Dornan is going to take your breath away. This Irish actor will make millions of women around the world swoon and beg in the highly anticipated romantic drama Fifty Shades of Grey.

Playing the iconic fictional character Christian Grey would be a tall order for any male actor. Grey, an alpha-male, self-made billionaire with a need to sexually dominate women, is an intriguingly complex character, and Jamie is up for the challenge.

His time as a Calvin Klein model as well as those liquid chocolate eyes are sure to help him steal the hearts of women around the globe. In the meantime, if you can’t wait until 2015 to see this dreamboat hit the big screen again, you can watch Jamie in the 2006 film Marie Antoinette or the television series Once Upon a Time.

3. Tyler Blackburn

Shoulder-length hair on a man has never looked so good.

Previously a daytime drama regular on Days of Our Lives, Tyler Blackburn is famous for his role as the sensitive bad boy Caleb in Pretty Little Liars. If that crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside role wasn’t enough to win you over, Tyler recently starred in Alloy Entertainment’s web series Wendy, in which he sang his own songs, including the theme song, “Save Me.”

Fans of this California native can continue to pine for him while watching ABC Family’s PLL spin-off, Ravenswood.

4. Beau Mirchoff

Feast your eyes on the most beautiful son of a podiatrist to ever grace the small screen.

Beau Mirchoff may have made his debut as the troubled but dynamic Danny Bolen on the sixth season of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, but he has been making hordes of women weak at the knees ever since.

Now famous for his role as the adorably irresistible Matty McKibben in MTV’s Awkward, Beau, a self-proclaimed goofball, has charmed his way into our hearts once again.

If you didn’t fall for him in Awkward, maybe his real-life soft side will make you swoon. This totes adorbs hottie loves the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally and even reenacted the famous faux orgasm scene in an NYC deli. He’s also picked out his wedding song, “Knot Comes Loose” by My Morning Jacket.

While he’s currently taken (sigh), you can swoon over him from afar in the indie movie Grass Stains, which will come out this year.

5. Charles Michael Davis

Charles Michael Davis is funny and smart as well as sexy. He’s an all-around romantic and a guy’s guy. So where did he come from?!

You might recognize him from his time guest-starring on That’s So Raven, Switched at Birth, The Game and The Vampire Diaries. He now stars in The Vampire Diaries’ spin-off, The Originals, as a vampire ruler in New Orleans.

Charles has even participated in a delightfully cheesy, once-in-a-lifetime wedding proposal video for one of his friends. Highlights from this 27-minute video include him dancing and lip-synching with the rest of his buddies to ‘N Sync’s “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You” and Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love To You.” How many celebs are cool enough to do that?!

While Charles may play a diabolical vampire on-screen, this piece of eye candy is nothing but lovable off-screen.

6. Jake T. Austin

Jake T. Austin is that Disney Channel star who grew up and didn’t go off the deep end.

Rather than asserting his adulthood with leaked nude pictures (Dylan Sprouse? What?) or twerking on Robin Thicke (thank you, Miley), he simply matured… very handsomely.

He is definitely not the mischievous little brother from Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place anymore. Rather, Jake, who speaks fluent Spanish in addition to English, now plays Jesus Foster on ABC Family’s The Fosters, in which he is one of the twins adopted on the show.

This star’s creativity brings all the girls to the yard. Jake writes, directs and acts in shorts for his own YouTube channel “Jakeethekid” and has written and sold his first screenplay for the movie Kings of Suburbia.

While he’s no doubt an attractive actor with many talents to offer, it’s ultimately his heart of gold that is sure to win you over. Jake devotes time to charitable causes, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

7. Dylan O’Brien

Even though he’s 22, Dylan O’Brien has a baby face that cannot be denied.

Famous for his role as Stiles, a goofy sidekick in the MTV series Teen Wolf, Dylan also co-starred in the romantic comedy The First Time and recently appeared in The Internship.

You may also recognize Dylan from an extra special episode of New Girl as “The Guy” to whom Jess lost her virginity. Too bad we can’t all be Zooey Deschanel…

His next big plan is to star as Thomas in the upcoming film The Maze Runner, which is set to come out in 2014. This sci-fi thriller is set in a post-apocalyptic world where Thomas and a larger community of boys are trapped in a maze and must band together to escape.

8. Domhnall Gleeson

Domhnall Gleeson is the hidden gem you have been looking for. Give his fiery red locks a chance, and you will not be disappointed. First notably appearing in the background of the Harry Potter saga as Ron’s older brother Bill Weasley, this Irish actor is a star both on and off screen.

In the recent romantic drama About Time, Domhnall will win your love and affection as Tim, a humble, kindhearted young man who learns on his 21st birthday that he can travel in time. This movie offers a chance for American women to get a glimpse of Domhnall in all his charmingly quirky glory. After witnessing Rachel McAdams fall for him on-screen, you won’t be far behind her.

9. Austin Butler

Austin Butler is the babe of all babes.

Austin became everyone’s crush while working the tween network, guest starring on Hannah Montana, iCarly, Zoey 101 and Wizards of Waverly Place. Everyone wanted a piece of this hottie with the golden locks.

However, Austin has really made a splash as the heartthrob on the Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries. On this CW series, Butler plays Sebastian, a brooding dreamboat attending the same high school as Carrie Bradshaw (played by AnnaSophia Robb).

In addition to his impossibly symmetrical features, Austin will dazzle you with his musical ability. While making an appearance on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, Austin performed a duet with Lucas Grabeel. Feel free to melt at the sound of his voice.

Remember to keep an eye out for these hotties as they continue to make our hearts melt and our knees weak!

The 9 Most WTF Moments of HBO's 'Girls'

$

Girls is grabbing everyone's attention for it's super candid, sexual and WTF humor. Let's take a look at the series' top nine most WTF moments.

1. Hannah’s Opium Pass-Out

Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”

After Hannah is cut off from her parents financially and left to fend for herself in the dog-eat-dog world of New York City, she deals with it in the most Hannah way possible. After drinking some opium tea, Hannah graces her parents with her stoned presence at their nearby hotel, tells them she is “the voice of her generation” and proceeds to pass out on the floor of their hotel room. We aren't really sure why Hannah thought it would be a genius idea to drown her panic with a giant pot of opium tea before visiting her parents, but we surely enjoyed watching it all unfold. Now we know what NOT to do when we're trying to convince our parents to lend us money.

2. “The stuff that gets up around the sides of condoms.”

Season 1, Episode 2: “Vagina Panic”

Hannah and her friends-with-benefits partner, Adam, have a talk, leaving Hannah in a panic when she realizes Adam doesn't always use condoms. We're left with Hannah propped up in her bed, exploring her lady biscuit with a magnifying mirror. To guide her investigation, she uses her all-knowing best friend, Google, searching the most plausible possibilities that could lead to anything out of the ordinary. Her search? “Stuff that gets up around the sides of condoms.”  WTF, Hannah? Okay, we all say WTF, but we secretly love that Hannah touches on something we're all afraid to talk about. Sometimes we have to take matters into our own hands, and we love that she isn't afraid to dive in and check it out.

3. Adam’s Erotic Selfie

Season 1, Episode 4: “Hannah’s Diary”

Adam has proved himself to be the cream of the crop when it comes to really weird sexual partners, but he really went above and beyond with his super creative "dick pic." His good-morning message to Hannah featured his penis staring at the camera phone, wrapped up in the bushy tail of a squirrel skin. Before we even had time to absorb the peculiar picture, he shot her the famous follow-up text: “SRY that wasn’t for you.” Great way to find out your hook-up buddy isn’t just your hook-up buddy. Not many of us will ever experience animal skin and a penis in one picture, but if our boyfriends ever send us a picture of their member wrapped in a coon hat, we now know how to handle it. Thanks, Hannah.

4. Shoshanna’s Crackcident

Season 1, Episode 7: “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident”

Unbeknownst to herself, Shoshanna becomes a crack-smoking rebel at a warehouse party after she smokes a drug she thought was marijuana (hint: it wasn't). Jessa fails as Shosh’s “crack spirit guide” and leaves her alone with Ray, whom she believes to be a rapist. Chaos ensues and Shoshanna takes off in a dead sprint down an alley, pants-less, running from Ray. It turns out the two actually start dating. What a romantic commencement to a budding relationship. We must admit, we loved seeing sweet, innocent little Shosh totally out of her element: high out of her mind and running around without pants on.

5. Marnie’s Not-so-Straight Sex Scene

Season 2, Episode 1: “It’s About Time”

Season two literally started off with a bang, and a very awkward and unexpected one at that. Not only did Marnie have sex with Elijah, Hannah’s gay ex-boyfriend, but it all went down after Elijah had a blowup fight with his boyfriend at Hannah and Marnie’s housewarming party. This one-of-a-kind sex scene is the foundation of the Girls WTF territory. We love Elijah and Marnie, but seeing the two both dressed in pastels and kitchen aprons made us feel like we were watching a pornographic version of The Stepford Wives.

6. Jessa’s Basket of Puppies

Season 2, Episode 2: “I Get Ideas”

After Jessa’s shotgun wedding and honeymoon with tenacious yuppie Thomas-John, he leaves right away to go back to work, leaving her bunked up in an amazing, super-posh apartment and a basket of puppies. We wouldn’t exactly pin Jessa’s character as a lovey-dovey, fuzzy-puppy-loving type, but don’t worry, she redeemed herself with the name choices for her new little pals: Garbage, F*cker and Hanukkah. Now that’s the Jessa we know and love.

7. Hannah and Elijah’s Cocaine Adventure

Season 2, Episode 3: “Bad Friend”

After Hannah's unemployment situation hits rock bottom, she takes it upon herself to begin some imaginative freelance writing.  She befriends Laird, an ex-junkie who lives in the basement of her apartment building, and procures some cocaine to inspire a new article. She and Elijah do the coke together and go club-hopping on a Wednesday night to enhance their experience. One thing leads to another, and Elijah spills the beans about his little sex incident with Marnie. Coked out and angry, Hannah runs home sweaty and braless, where she spends the night with Laird. This was our favorite Hannah WTF moment, mostly because of her famous see-through yellow mesh shirt leaving her boobs flopping in the wind.

8. Marnie’s Encounter With Booth’s Sex Chamber

Season 2, Episode 3: “Bad Friend”

In an effort to explore her sexual side after dating super-vanilla boyfriend Charlie, Marnie goes on a bit of a sexcapade with the trendy conceptual artist Booth Jonathan. Unfortunately, he's disturbingly conceptualized in the bedroom, too. Before even getting Marnie in bed, he showed her his collection of dollhouses smeared with his own blood. Then, he introduced his idea of foreplay, which consisted of locking Marnie in a chamber of TVs, making her watch disturbing video footage. It didn’t end there; he even likes a mannequin to be in the room while they have sex. Um…WTF? We love a little excitement in the bedroom, but this crosses the line from kinky to creepy. Maybe Charlie was super lame, but at least he wasn't a borderline pedophile.

9. Jessa's Lesbian Act of Honor

Season 3, Episode 1: Females Only

After admitting herself to rehab and hating every single minute of it, Jessa finds herself in deep sh*t when she accuses Laura, one of the other addicts, of being a lesbian because she hates sex and is wearing a vest. In an attempt to apologize to Laura, Jessa tells her that she would probably get over her addiction if she was more open about her sexuality. Her way of helping out? Giving Laura intense oral sex, which in exchange gets Jessa kicked out of rehab. As cringe-worthy as it was, we silently smirked, because only Jessa could get kicked out of rehab for giving out sexual favors. Hey, she was just trying to help... right?

5 Mistakes You Made Last Semester & How to Fix Them

As each semester comes to an end, it’s only natural that we have a few regrets about how we spent it. Grades not up to our standards? Maybe we should have worked more (or partied less). Didn’t get to spend enough time with our friends? Maybe the decision to take 18 credits and work part-time was a little too much.

As collegiettes, every semester presents a new opportunity to start fresh. So HC has gathered five common mistakes that many college girls make every semester, along with some advice to make sure they don’t happen again.

The Problem: You weren’t involved enough.

bored girl lazy in bed upset

Every collegiette’s first semester of college is filled with an endless list of things to do: bonding with other students in the dorm, becoming accustomed to the difficulty of college level courses, and more. But once the initial freshman excitement wears off, you might find yourself just… bored! If you decided to take things slow and didn’t join a sorority, apply to join the school newspaper or take on a part-time job, you may begin to feel underwhelmed by the college experience.

The Solution:

There are numerous reasons why getting involved on campus can help you feel more connected with the university as a whole. Joining organizations can help you meet more people, develop career interests, take advantage of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, expand your interests beyond your particular major and—ultimately—just have more fun!

Phillip Smith, director of public relations and social media at Westwood College, suggests that students join clubs to connect with other students. “Participation in clubs can build skills, resumes and contacts. For example, student council builds civics skills, enrollment in honor societies looks great on resumes and participating in degree-related clubs builds relationships with other individuals you may meet again in your line of work,” Smith says.

Not sure where to start looking?

  • Attend your college or university’s club fair.
  • Keep your eyes open when you walk around campus for groups of students promoting organizations or flyers on bulletin boards.
  • Talk to your friends and see what they’re involved in.
  • Visit your school’s website and find a list of all the recognized organizations on campus.

Once you make the decision to join an organization, team or sorority, you’ll be happy that you have more to do than worry about your classes and lounge around the dorm.

The Problem: You were TOO involved.

multitasking girl overwhelmed too much work

Many overachieving collegiettes face problems when they become too involved in on and off campus activities. Erica Avesian, a collegiette from the University of Michigan, has witnessed this problem firsthand.

“I made the mistake of trying to do too much last semester,” Erica says. “I was taking 18 credits, in three student groups, writing for two publications and tutoring athletes. On top of all of this, I was going out two to three times a week. There was no such thing as ‘free time’ in my life.”

The Solution:

Though being involved is great for your resume and your happiness, becomingtooinvolved can negatively affect your mental and physical health. This is how Erica learned that she needed to slow down. “I worked on all of my homework assignments/papers to the point of perfectionism. All of this hard work combined with my responsibilities and busy social life took a toll  on my health. I now know to let some things go next semester and stop trying to be Wonder Woman,” Erica says.

To avoid dealing with the same problem, make sure you prioritize! Creating a good work/life balance now will help you once you graduate from college and get out into the “real world.” So do some internal reflection. Make a list of your commitments and decide which ones you can reasonably drop and which you can’t. If you need to resign from an organization or student publication (or just resign from a leadership position in them), do so.  Remember, like almost everything in life, quality is more important than quantity!

The Problem: You’re pulling too many all-nighters

all nighter tired girl working too hard overworked

We’ve all heard that pulling all-nighters is bad for our health. It can cause stress and lead to serious sleep disorders. But all-nighters also affect our academic performance. A 2010 study at St. Lawrence University in New York, led by professor of psychology Pamela Thatcher, found that students who pull all-nighters have slightly lower GPAs on average.

The Solution:

Many times pulling all-nighters in college can feel unavoidable. But there are certainly steps that you can take to achieve a greater work/sleep balance and ensure that health and academic performance don’t suffer:

  • Schedule everything. Don’t just assume that you’ll get your work done when you have time. Write down everything in your iCal or planner so you’ll know exactly when you can tackle it.
  • Over estimate the amount of time it will take you to complete a task. One of the biggest problems when it comes to all-nighters is that we don’t understand how much time it will take to finish something. If this happens to you, schedule more than enough time to get something done. Don’t assume you can crank that paper out in two hours, plan for five hours.
  • When in doubt, sleep! It’s not realistic to assume that you can work from 7 PM to 7 AM straight to get something done for your 8 AM class. So instead of trying to power through, go to sleep for a few hours and set your alarm. That way, you’ll be somewhat rested and more prepared to tackle your work.

The Problem: You’re ditching too many classes.

Most of us are guilty of doing it: hearing our alarm go off at 7:00 AM on a Monday morning and deciding no Biology 101 class is important enough to pull ourselves out of bed and walk through the rain.

But there are many reasons why you should go. For one, you (or your parents) are spending an arm and a leg on your tuition and two, no amount of office hour appointments or textbook reading are going to make up for the fact that you didn’t show up to class. Professors aren’t really sympathetic about that.

The Solution

Figure out what works and doesn’t work for you and try to schedule your classes with this in mind. Briana, a student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, says she wishes she wouldn’t have scheduled 8 AM classes because she had a hard time getting up for them. “It is good to know your sleeping habits when you create your schedule and be honest with yourself about how often you will attend early classes,” Briana says.

Of course, it’s sometimes impossible to control when you have class. In this case, you may need to suck it up for one semester and imagine how much harder it’s going to be once you have a full-time job and have to be in the office from 8 AM to 5 PM (at least!)  everyday!

pile of homework papers falling behind lots of work

The Problem: You’re falling behind with homework and reading.

We’ve all done it. The first and second weeks of the semester we’re excited about our new classes and eagerly do the readings (while taking detailed notes!). A couple of weeks later, we throw the books on our desk where they sit and collect dust for the rest of the semester while we try to justify our decision to give up on the readings (“The professor isn’t following the book anyway…”).

Unfortunately, this habit can lead to serious problems once midterms or finals come around. It’s completely understandable that you likely have tons of work to get done and little time to complete it, but it’s important that you find a solution to make sure you don’t dig yourself into a hole that you can’t climb out of.

The Solution

Start the semester by making a commitment to yourself that you will stay on top of your work, but do this in your own way. For example, if you know that you’re terrible at keeping up with the reading, decide that you will skim through the reading and take notes on the chapter summaries every week. By making even small changes like these, you will find that you feel more prepared for studying and taking exams.

Another way you can make up for your tendency to fall behind in reading is by actively participating in class sessions. If you fail to do the reading and spend the duration of the class checking out your ex’s Facebook photos, you’ll find yourself even more behind! So pay attention in class and answer questions and you may find that the reading isn’t even necessary!

Ultimately, the best way to make sure you don’t repeat last semester’s mistakes is by realizing what you can do better. Talk to your academic advisor or friends you look up to for advice as to how you can have your best semester yet!

Hypochondria: Do You Have It?

$

Imagine the following scenario: you notice a small, ingrown hair on your leg and pop it. A day later, the pore where the ingrown hair was looks a little puffy. You notice a slight itch, too. You search the Internet for your symptoms, and in 10 seconds you’re sure you have a staph infection. You play it out in your head: maybe it will turn into a really serious staph infection. Maybe it’s the drug-resistant kind.

Or what about this: you have a slight stomachache that has persisted for a few days. It’s not too painful, but you definitely notice it. A few clicks on WebMD and suddenly you’re positive you have pancreatitis. Or toxic shock syndrome. Or stomach cancer. You start taking your temperature hourly, monitoring what you eat and telling everyone who will listen that you might have something serious and you need to see a doctor right away.

Sound familiar? You might have hypochondriasis, a mental disorder in which a person experiences excessive worry or fear about his or her health. But luckily, there are ways to calm down about your health! We talked to clinical psychologist and Psychology Today blogger Dr. Joni Johnston for the lowdown on health anxiety.

What is it?

Hypochondriasis (often referred to as hypochondria, health phobia or health anxiety) is a mental disorder. “Hypochondriasis is essentially the preoccupation with fears of having or the idea that one has a serious disease based on the person’s misinterpretation of bodily symptoms,” Dr. Johnston says.

Hypochondriacs will often seek diagnoses online, from friends and from doctors, but because this anxious behavior is excessive, reassurance from others will typically do nothing. “Essentially, no matter how many doctors the person visits, no matter how many normal tests, etc., the person continues to suffer from these pervasive thoughts and fears—‘Maybe the doctor missed something, maybe it wasn't the right test, maybe I have some form of rare illness that is hard to diagnose,’” Dr. Johnston says.

But just because you’ve been paranoid about your health a few times doesn’t mean you’re a hypochondriac. We’re all guilty of WebMD-ing our symptoms sometimes, but having hypochondria means you have to fit a few other diagnostic requirements. According to Dr. Johnston, as echoed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria for diagnosis, a person must experience this excessive worry for at least six months.

“The main difference between occasional anxiety and hypochondriasis is the duration of the preoccupation, the severity and the interference it causes in other areas of a person's life,” she says.

Occasionally Googling your symptoms and asking friends and family what you should do is normal behavior. However, hypochondriacs will do the same, but then when doctors confirm what they actually have or that they’re healthy, they won’t believe it. “One of the hallmarks of this mental illness is that the fears persist in spite of medical evaluation and reassurance,” Dr. Johnston says.

Emma, a junior at Kenyon College, has experienced hypochondria for as long as she can remember. “I have believed myself to be suffering from anything from tonsillitis to a brain tumor,” she says.  “It's really hard to explain to someone who doesn't experience it themselves, but the best way I can explain it is that even though I know I sound crazy, every time [I think something is wrong, it] is genuinely terrifying.”

Is it related to other forms of anxiety?

Hypochondria is similar to generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder in that hypochondriacs have irrational and often obsessive fears about their body’s health. “In many ways it can be considered a severe form of health anxiety,” Dr. Johnston says.  “The person often [has] pervasive and intrusive thoughts (around health concerns) that she can't seem to shake off.” Like OCD, hypochondria can even have a compulsory feeling. Sufferers may think that they just have to check the Internet or get a doctor’s opinion.

Hypochondria is also comorbid (which means that suffers often have other disorders alongside it) with mental disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, OCD and depression. Additionally, hypochondriacs will sometimes have so much anxiety that the feelings manifest as physical symptoms. Just like some people get stomachaches when they’re nervous, hypochondriacs may develop symptoms such as nausea, stomachache, headache and fatigue simply due to anxiety.

How do you deal with it?

Regardless of if you think you have the mental disorder or if you just experience occasional worrying about your health, there are many techniques you can use to alleviate some of the nerves. However, you should see a doctor first if you think you may struggle with hypochondria.

  • Close your Internet browser. Aches or pains? The Internet is the wrong place to go looking for the answer. “Google is full of diagnoses—plenty of them wrong,” Dr. Johnston says. “Enter a symptom—say, stomach pain—and you'll learn you could have anything from appendicitis to esophageal cancer. People, especially those with a predisposition to health anxiety, find themselves a lot more anxious after checking these sites. Do yourself a favor and don't symptom shop on the net.”
  • Stick with one doctor. Constantly switching doctors until you’re satisfied with a diagnosis is only going to cause a headache, increasing the likelihood for different diagnoses and unnecessary (and expensive) tests. “Find one who you trust, create a good relationship with him/her and don't make a change,” Dr. Johnston says. “Be open and honest about your concerns and struggles.”
  • Don’t self-check. Even if you’re pre-med and convinced you know what you’re doing, avoid constantly checking your temperature, pulse and blood pressure. “Put the at-home medical devices away. Focus on something aside from your body—it's much healthier and more productive,” Dr. Johnston says. Try to distract yourself. Pop in a movie, bake some cookies or do some yoga. Try to remember that the human body is an incredible machine. A random stomachache might actually just be a random stomachache.
  • Join a support group. If you find yourself obsessively worrying about your health, seek the support and help of others. “You can swap knowledge and coping strategies, provide reassurance and answer each other's questions. And it helps to know that you're not alone,” Dr. Johnston says. Not into the group therapy? Set up a one-on-one meeting with a counselor at your student counseling center or talk to your doctor.
  • Be active. Getting up and out may be the best thing for you even if you just want to lie in bed and use the WebMD iPhone app. “Exercising helps ease stress, depression and anxiety,” Dr. Johnston says. “No need for it to be intense, either; walk the dog, go swimming or do some gardening. Stress makes sufferers feel more anxious, and may also exacerbate symptoms they already have.”

Next time you’re feeling a little nervous about a bump or ache, try out a few of these tips. Remember, distraction is key!

What if nothing helps?

Okay, so you tried all of the tricks above and nothing is helping you relax about the rare disease you’re sure you have. Once a doctor or a psychiatrist diagnoses you with hypochondria, there are options, Dr. Johnston says.

Psychologists agree that a form of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective ways of treating hypochondria. CBT is a short-term therapeutic approach where psychologists will help you change the way you think and the way you act through a goal-oriented, step-by-step process.

Your student counseling center may offer this kind of therapy, or you may have to seek out psychologists in your area. Or, you could even use a CBT online program. “New research suggests that internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (check out Online Therapy USER) is as effective and more accessible than face-to-face CBT,” Dr. Johnston says.

If hypochondria is making you excessively anxious, your psychiatrist may also suggest medication, like an anti-anxiety medication or an antidepressant. This is a decision you and your doctor/psychiatrist will make together. Emma sees a psychologist and takes antidepressants to help her cope with her hypochondria. Others find better options for them. Like all mental disorders, hypochondria may mean different treatments for different people.

If anxiety about your health has got you on edge, know that you’re not alone! Distract yourself, stay off the health websites and chat rooms and seek the support to a professional if you need it.

The Top 5 Rules for Staying Friends with Your Ex

$

Whether you’ve said it yourself or heard it from an ex-boyfriend, we have all heard some version of the line, “I think we’re better off as friends.” And while in the moment it sounds like the worst idea you’ve ever heard, later you start to come around. Your ex is someone you care about, and you presumably had great times together, so having him in your life as a friend will be just as fun, right? Right! But there are some rules to follow to ensure your friendship is a success. To help, we have put together a guide to point you in the right direction!

Rule #1: Show Some Respect

hugging couple friends hug saying hello

Regardless of why the two of you broke up, at one point you cared a lot for each other. In order to stay friends, you must honor the relationship you once had. “After my boyfriend of two years and I broke up, I spent a lot of time trashing him to my girl friends,” says Jessie, a student at the University of Missouri. “I was really mad that he didn’t want to be together anymore, and I wanted people to think I had moved on. I said a lot of things that I didn’t mean, and they got back to him. He was so hurt that he didn’t want anything to do with me after that.” You may be thinking that he is the worst person to have ever walked the earth, but keep it to yourself. Someday in the future you may want him back in your life (in any capacity), and that will only happen if you have shown respect for each other after your break-up, which means no trash-talking, no spilling secrets, and no over-sharing of details.

Rule #2: Give It Time

Break-ups are hard, and they generally require a good amount of time to recover from, whether you were the dumper or the dumpee. Before you can be friends, you have to give yourself time to get over him. It’s pointless to be friends if you are actually hoping to get back together, and it will only serve to drive you apart. “My boyfriend and I were together for three years so when we broke up my world fell apart,” says Camille, a student at the University of Kansas. “Even though I still wanted to talk to him everyday, I told him that I needed some time apart to get over him and move on. It took awhile – almost 6 months – before I was ready to be friends. Sometimes those old feelings come back, but I think that time apart really made the difference for me.” While you will always hold a special place in your heart for your ex-boyfriend, it’s best to wait until you have healed from the break-up and really moved on before you move forward into a new type of relationship with him.

Rule #3: Let It Go

couple in a fight upset angry boyfriend girlfriend bad relationship

Yes, there are probably still a few unresolved issues between you and your ex-boyfriend. However, if you want to be friends, you have to let those things go. You are no longer a couple so you can’t act as if you are, despite how badly you might want to. “Every time I saw my ex-boyfriend after we broke up, we would end up getting into a major argument about things that happened during our relationship,” says Sarah, a student at the University of Kentucky. “I would say some snarky comment about something he did, which would result in him throwing something back in my face. Soon enough we were screaming at each other, and I would resolve to never speak to him again. It wasn’t healthy at all, and it ruined any future we may have had as friends.” After a break-up, you need to make peace with yourself about any issues that you and your boyfriend had as a couple. Since that part of your relationship is now over, it’s best that you start over as friends with a clean slate.

Rule #4: Move Forward
holding hands moving on letting go

Another problem that many couples face after a break-up is feelings of remorse. Spending so much time together as ‘friends’ may make you reconsider why you broke up in the first place. However, you have to realize that you broke up for a reason, and those newfound feelings are probably just a result of your changed relationship status. “My ex and I started to hang out more after we broke up than we did when we were together,” says Brooke, a student at the University of Missouri. “We got along great as friends, which made us think we should get back together. That backfired almost instantly, and we went back to fighting on a regular basis. We had to accept that we didn’t work as a couple in order to be friends.” Instead of reminiscing about the good times and doubting your decision to break up, be grateful for a great relationship, even if it is only as friends.

Rule #5: Have Separate Lives

fighting couple upset annoyed

Even if you are completely over each other and happy as friends, it will never be easy to hear about last night’s hook-up, a great date or a budding new relationship. You may think that you can turn to each other about relationship drama because you are now friends, but it probably isn’t a good idea. “My ex would always ask for advice about girls he was hooking up with or interested in dating,” says Hannah, a student at the University of San Diego. “I didn’t think it would bother me, but it absolutely killed me, and I eventually had to tell him that we couldn’t talk about those things. It brought up too many emotions that interfered with my ability to be a good friend. I was really jealous and angry.” You have to realize that while you are friends, you don’t have the same relationship that you do with someone that you have never dated. There are certain boundaries that cannot be crossed, and you need to keep your romantic life private in order to preserve a healthy friendship with your ex.

It’s possible to have a great relationship with your ex even after you break-up so long as you stick to our five rules. Good luck, collegiettes!

11 Pieces of Love Advice From Shoes

$

If we could organize our romantic relationships as well as we organized our shoe collections, we'd be set. It turns out we can learn a thing or two about love from our glitzy stilettos and sleek boots. Afterall, isn't true love the meeting of two soles?

1. The more time you spend with a shoe, the more comfortable the fit will be. First dates can be awkward, but chemistry can improve over time. Be willing to give people a second chance.

2. All shoes go through wear and tear over time. It's your decision to mend them or throw them out. Relationships are ever-changing, so don't become complacent if your relationship has gone into a slump.

3. Just because a shoe looks good doesn't mean it will treat you well. Superficiality will do you no favors for the long haul.

4. Shoes can be enticing, but don't try on a shoe you can't afford to buy. Respect your relationships by only dating if you are ready and able to commit.

5. With some shoes, you can only spend a few hours (or minutes!) with them before your feet start to cry. Don't ignore the warning signs of a harmful relationship!

6. While common interests are a plus in a pair, differences can be a nice complement as well.

7. Some shoes are good for hitting the dance floor. Others will protect you in a storm. Accept that each pair has its own strengths and weaknesses and no one shoe can do it all. However, this doesn't mean you can't find your perfect fit.

8. Don't limit your prospects to a certain "type" of shoe. You'll be surprised at the number of eligible bachelors you overlooked before!

9. While the opinions of your friends and family matter, remember that you are the one wearing the shoes. Your decisions should ultimately be guided by what's best for you (or your feet).

10. When you force a shoe to fit, you will only hurt yourself. Let your relationships progress naturally.

11. Just because one pair hurt you doesn't mean you should live the rest of your life barefoot.

Should You Date an International Student? 7 Things To Consider

$
0

Nothing could be more exciting than a little international love. What could be bad about a fun fling with a foreign campus cutie studying at your American college? However, things can get complicated when that fun fling turns into a real relationship. Is it wise to get romantically involved with an exchange student while knowing that person will only be around for a limited time before returning home? We talked to some experienced collegiettes and came up with seven things to consider before dating a temporary visitor to the States.

1. He’s Different From American Guys

Dating someone from a different country can be a nice departure from the norm. “I dated a guy from Belgium who was studying at my school for the year,” says Krystal, a senior at the University of Michigan. “He was so different than any guy I’d ever dated before… I felt like he was always surprising me, whether it was the things we’d talk about or the fun dates he’d plan. He kept things exciting, just because I never knew what to expect from him.”

Of course, not all American boys are the same, but dating someone from another country can give you a totally unexpected experience. You and your old cutie may have spent every Friday night getting burgers and seeing a movie, but with an international cutie you might spend date night sightseeing, trying out a new restaurant or spending the whole night clubbing. Date night may never be predictable again!

2. You Can Learn About an Entirely New Culture

International students aren’t only different in how they treat a date––they come from an entirely different world than you, full of unfamiliar customs and traditions. “Even though it was only for a few months, one of the best relationships I’ve ever been in will always be with the guy who was studying abroad at my school from Belize,” says Jen, a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “He was a great cook, and he’d make all these incredible meals for me that he’d make at home. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had!”

Whether you get to try out his country’s food, listen to the local music or sharpen up your foreign language skills, dating someone from a different culture can allow you to expand your horizons––even if it is for only a short amount of time.

However, culture clashing can come with challenges as well. For Krystal, she found that her cutie “never wanted to go to my favorite bars with all my friends. He said he couldn’t stand all the American pop music they played there.” You may be open to your international guy’s culture, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be open to embracing yours.

3. An International Guy is a Novelty

Whether we admit it or not, one of the greatest appeals of dating an international student is the reaction you’ll get from everyone else: jealousy. “My friends couldn’t believe it when I started seeing Ken,” said Krystal. “It was so much fun to be able to introduce him to people, like, ‘This is my boyfriend, Ken. Oh, and he’s from Belgium.’”

Of course, dating someone isn’t all about the reaction you’ll get from others. But we can’t pretend it’s not great to snag the foreign hottie every girl on campus has had her eye on!

4. The Relationship Has an Expiration Date

Whether you just got out of a long relationship or you’re just not looking for anything too serious right now, dating an international student is the perfect opportunity for something a little more casual. “I started seeing a guy in my lit class who was studying here from Germany after I broke up with my sophomore-year boyfriend,” says Brittany, a senior at Worcester State University. “It was really exactly what I needed; we both knew he’d be returning home after the end of the semester, and so we just had fun without any expectations of our relationships going anywhere.”

If you’re looking for a fun, casual fling, international students can be your best bet––you go into the relationship knowing they have to leave eventually, and if things end on bad terms, you’ll never have to awkwardly run into them on campus again!

However, if you’re seeking a serious relationship, it’s important to consider whether or not you think things will last once your cutie returns home. “I hadn’t gone into my relationship thinking it would last past the semester, but when it was time for Daniel to return to Dublin, we knew it wasn’t over,” says Kristine from Boston College. “We thought it would be just a limited-time thing, but it has turned out to be so much more.”

Though you may go into a relationship not expecting much more than a fling, be open to the possibility that your international relationship may surpass its expiration date.

5. You Can Have Different Expectations

Dating rituals differ among cultures, and unless you and your international beau explicitly communicate your expectations, some things can become lost in translation. “I had thought things were getting serious between me and a student visiting from England last fall,” says Sarah, a junior from Boston University. “He’d take me out dancing and on dates and call me his ‘American lover.’ Unfortunately, I later discovered that he had a number of American lovers. I was looking for a relationship, while he was apparently just looking to hook up with as many Americans as he could in a year.”

Things can also become more serious than you’re interested in if there’s a cross-cultural miscommunication. “When Ken started telling me about taking me home to meet his family, and then later about me moving to Belgium with him after graduation, that’s when I really started to freak out,” Krystal says.

For Sarah, too, physical expectations weren’t always well communicated. “He moved a lot faster than the American guys I’d been with ever did,” she says. “I felt like I was always asking him if we could take things slower, which led to frustration on both our parts.”

Unless you’re both clear on what you’re looking for, both emotionally and physically, you could end up heartbroken (or running for the hills!).

6. It’s Hard to Keep Up the Relationship After He Leaves

After your lover returns to his home country, it might seem romantic to keep the relationship going transnationally. Unfortunately, this usually ends in more frustration than anything. “We kept up correspondence for a little bit after my boyfriend went back to Belize,” Jen says. “But once he was no longer at the same school as me, we realized how different our lives really were; often, he’d just be heading out for the night as I was going to bed! It just wasn’t the same.”

Long-distance relationships can work, but when the two of you are not only in different time zones, but entirely different countries, keeping a connection becomes especially challenging.

Kristine, however, has been able to make it work with her Irish beau. “We’ve been together for a year and a half, even though we’ve lived in the same country for less than a third of that time,” she says. “I’ve gone to visit him twice, and he’s come to visit me twice. We Skype three times a week and text every day. If it’s worth it, you’ll make it work.”

7. You Could Accidentally Fall for Him

You may go into the relationship with the expectation that’s it’s not going to be too serious… but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to control how you feel once you’re in it.

“Neither me nor Mark was looking for anything more than a fling, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t start to get attached near the end,” Brittany says. “I’d tell my friends, ‘We’re just having fun,’ but really, I’d fallen for him. I cried when he had to go back home, but I was almost relieved… If he had stayed any longer, I really would have been in deep.”

No one can say how hard you’ll fall or how attached you’ll get when you enter a new relationship, even if it’s one that you know you will (probably) need to end at a certain point. When you get involved with someone who lives so far from you, there’s always the chance that he’ll take a little piece of your heart with him. But that can be a good thing, too. “…Falling for Daniel was the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Kristine. “People always ask me, ‘What’s going to happen next?’ but I’m not worried about that. I took a chance and fell in love, and for now, that’s enough.”

Dating an international student can be fun. You get the chance to experience an entirely new type of relationship. But dating someone who is only in the country for a limited time also comes with the risk that you could fall harder than you ever expected.

In the end, you have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself; would you rather wonder “What if?” for the rest of your life, but save yourself the heartbreak? Or would you rather put your heart on the line and know you gave it a shot? It’s for you to decide, collegiettes!

It looks like 2014 will be another year of controversy for Justin Bieber. Throughout the past twelve months, Beliebers everywhere have watched the pop star shed his innocence as he continues to make frequent headlines for everything from his romance to his….retirement? The New Year has just begun, but there’s one thing we’re sure 2014 holds for us: Justin stirring up trouble. Here’s a look at the 10 worst moments Justin had in the past year.

Smokes Pot

On January 2, 2013 Bieber was spotted smoking marijuana at a hotel party, which caused an uproar among beliebers worldwide. TMZ posted photos of Justin and his crew (including good friend Lil' Twist) with marijuana and alcohol inside of a hotel room in Newport Beach.

He addressed his concerned fans in a, ahem, blunt manner by vowing, “to be better”.

Gets Kicked Out of A Club

Justin couldn’t wait to celebrate his birthday in London on March 1, 2013. The party didn’t last long as the (shirtless) pop star was booted out of the popular Cirque Du Soir nightclub, later tweeting that this was his “worst birthday ever.”

According to a club source, Justin was not asked to leave due to bad behavior, but because some members of his crew were under 18 years old. The rep released a public statement saying that, “Justin and his friends are always welcome, as long as the members of the group are legally old enough to enter the club,” reported Hollywood Life

Fights Paparazzi

Bieber’s London drama didn’t stop after his birthday bust. On March 8th, the tatted star was leaving his hotel when he allegedly shoved a paparazzi in order to get to his car. When the pap claimed assault,  Justin jumped out of his van and, according to Hollywood Life, lunged for the man as he screamed “I’ll f*cking beat the f*ck out of you!” before being restrained by his bodyguard.

Tattoos Selena On His Wrist

In April, it seemed that Justin wanted to honor his notoriously rocky relationship with Selena Gomez by getting her face tatted on his wrist. While he has not publicly confirmed that the tattoo is actually of Selena, Us Weekly reported that the tattoo is of a “woman with dark hair, low cut top, and angel wings,” an image very similar to one taken of Selena for the July 2012 issue of Elle Magazine.

Urinates In A Restaurant Mop Bucket

New York City just doesn’t have enough restrooms, right? Apparently Bieber thought so when he decided to urinate in a mop bucket inside of a New York restaurant. In case this wasn’t shocking enough for his beloved fans, he is also heard yelling “F*ck Bill Clinton!” as he sprays a photo of the former President with cleaning liquid in the video posted by TMZ

Loses his…Monkey?

In March 2013, German customs officials took one of Bieb’s most memorable possessions — his monkey, Mally. According to Daily Mail, after Justin failed to produce the proper papers for his unconventional pet, he was detained for a brief period of time.

Visits a Brothel

While on tour in Brazil in November 2013, it seems Justin felt he had to see all that the country had to offer — allegedly including a 3 hour visit to a brothel in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, the star went back to his hotel with two women…both of whom we assume were not on-and-off girlfriend Selena Gomez.

Spray Paints A Building

We all know Justin is an artist, but in November 2013, he added a new form to his repertoire: graffiti.  Rolling Stone reported that just days after he was spotted leaving the brothel, Bieber was officially charged by police in Rio de Janiero for “defacing a building or urban monument by graffiti or other means.”

Retires...Sort of.

Justin embodied his recently released song “heartbreaker” as he sent several fans into panic mode upon his announcement that he planned to leave the music industry. On December 25, 2013  the pop star tweeted to his followers, “My beloved beliebers, I’m officially retiring.”

Keeping fans on an emotional roller coaster, a Bieber source told the New York Daily News that this announcement was “a joke from his end” which supported a later Bieber tweet in which he claimed, “IM HERE FOREVER”.

Eggs A House

Biebs kicks of 2014 making it clear that he’s going to continue to make headlines!  Us Weekly reported that Bieber’s Calabasas home was raided by police on the morning of January 14th as part of investigation of an egging incident at a neighbor’s home earlier in the week.

The trouble didn’t stop there for Bieber — the LA Times reported that during this raid, officers found what was allegedly cocaine in the singer’s home and that, according to Lt. Dave Thompson, the drug was “in plain view of the deputies when they were looking for the other evidence.” The LA Times also reported that while Bieber was not arrested on drug charges, friend Lil Za (real name Xavier Smith) was.

E! News reported that the drug was not actually cocaine, but may have been MDMA (aka “Molly”).
