11 Weird Things All Roommates Do

$

Being pantsless, stuffing our faces and just generally acting ridiculous are things that we all love to do in the privacy of our own homes. So it's essential that when you have a roommate, she doesn't judge you - and she'll even join in. Keep reading for a list of all the weird yet sort of endearing stuff you and your roommate(s) do together. Deny all you want, but you know its true!

1. Lying on the couch together in comfortable silence for three hours.

Sometimes it's just nice knowing she's there.

2. Checking yourself out in each other's mirrors before you go out.

"Your mirror makes my legs look like Christmas trees" -direct quote from writer's roommate

3. Dancing spontaneously in the living room to any and everything.

~*~ "Get connected, for free, with Education Connection" ~*~

4. Belting songs together in beautiful harmony because you do it so often.

Vanessa Carlton, is that you?

5. Wearing the official apartment uniform of an oversized T-shirt, no pants and a towel turban.

Pants are irrelevant.

6. Yelling at the TV screen in unison when catching up on your favorite shows.

"TURN AROUND! Twisty's right behind you!!"

7. Crying over fitness Instagrams as you’re both opening a jar of Nutella and popping kettle corn.

Hazelnuts and corn... that counts as clean eating, right?

8. Texting each other from your respective beds cause you're too lazy to walk to each other's rooms.

"I love you, just not enough to brave life without my comforter."

9. Ordering each other food without asking because you already know each other's favorite order at every restaurant in your college town.

Tofu pad thai with no bean sprouts and an extra side of peanut sauce? I got you, girl.

10. Peeing with the door open.

The effort required to close a bathroom door is somewhat unreasonable. Plus, the best apartments always have a strict open-door-policy.

11. Exchanging gross personal stories with not a filter in sight.

How can your roommate relationship be real if you never told her about the time you peed your pants while simultaneously throwing up at Disneyland?

College Fashion Week 2014 Ends With a Bang in San Francisco

After College Fashion Week Chicago, our cross-country fashion week headed to the last (but certainly not least) stop on the tour: San Francisco! The west coast greeted the HC team with warmer weather and tons of energy! Thanks to the tons of attendees who came out to the trendy venue, Origin Boutique Nightclub, the west coast proved to be the perfect place to conclude College Fashion Week 2014. Here's a rundown of the spectacular night!

The place was packed! Everyone flooded in and got ready for fabulous fun; attendees got their hair done by TRESemmé (the official hair care sponsor of College Fashion Week), got a mini make-under by bareMinerals (the official beauty sponsor) and checked out the season's hottest pieces, provided by boohoo.com (the official style sponsor).

Once again, Tyler Laswell, the mega-talented editorial hairstylist for TRESemmé, created chic yet doable hairstyles for our amazing models. Here, he's working on the Imperial Half-Up Knotted Loop, which is one of those effortless hairstyles that you can rock anywhere without looking too boring or too busy. This simple hairstyle is seriously so easy to do that it can become your go-to daily look! Here are the steps to achieve this casual perfection:

1. Mist damphairwithTRESemméPlatinumStrengthHeatProtectionSpray to shieldhairfromheatdamage.

2. Apply TRESemméClimateProtectionMousse throughoutlengthsandusea mediumroundbrushtocreate asoft,naturalblow-out.

Primping took place left and right (literally)! bareMinerals provided the fabulous makeup for the night, and even helped match the right shade of foundation for many of the attendees! All attendees were invited to take home a full-sized bareMinerals Original foundation and brush for all their at-home primping needs.

boohoo.com was the brains behind all of the show's hottest clothing for the upcoming season. They even created a fashion closet where attendees got to browse and add to their shopping wishlist. We knew that boohoo.com was one of the U.K.'s best-kept style secrets, so we had a feeling our collegiettes would love the looks. With tees like these ("Always dress as if you're going to see your ex") and on-trend statement pieces, we're not surprised they're taking the U.S. by storm!

While the models got ready backstage, attendees had the chance to strike a pose and get goofy in the popular Bosco GIF booth, provided by Premium Outlets. Check out all the GIFs from the night here!

It isn't a true fashion show without a pile of sky-high, jaw-dropping heels that are waiting to be worn by some very lucky models! Those pointy-toed suede pumps are seriously killer. We're experiencing a serious case of #stylecrave!

This model couldn't be any more on point with the fall-inspired outfit! The whole boohoo.com look – the chunky cable-knit sweater, the wrap skirt and slouchy boots – makes our fashionista hearts proud!

This model sure knows how to own it! It's all about the attitude. But also, can we focus for a minute on how well that plush jacket complements those distressed boyfriend jeans? Perfection.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened! That's our outlook, especially when it comes to as awesome a series of events as College Fashion Week. With new cities and new faces, College Fashion Week 2014 was a whirlwind beyond our wildest dreams. As we look back on the great times we had in Boston, New York City and Chicago, we can't help but think about how big and fab next year's tour will be. See you at College Fashion Week 2015, collegiettes!

Finding a Fall Jacket with Miss Me

It's coat weather!!! I'm so excited!

As soon as the leaves start to change colors, I find myself desperate for it to get cool enough where a coat can be used for both fashionable and practical reasons. I don’t love coats when I’m shivering or when I’m sweating in them as I walk around campus, but when it’s this perfect, cool late October weather, I can’t get enough of short, trendy outerwear.

I've wanted a jacket with black leather sleeves and green canvas for the longest time. Each one I found was missing something, that is until I tried on Miss Me’s new version of the jacket that had the addition I needed: a fluffy inside and fluffy hood! There is nothing more snuggly in the world of fall jackets than that soft fluffiness in your jacket. This is the kind of jacket you could happily fall asleep in—and seriously, what's better than something chic and comfy?

While this jacket is definitely a fashion statement, an outfit requires more than a coat—so I wanted to create a chic layered look that would look great with it. I paired the jacket with a plaid tunic from Miss Me (because really, what says fall more than plaid?) that had subtle studded accents and a scoop back. The top was long enough to peek out of jacket from behind, which I really loved. Plus, the maroon and gold colors on the tunic looked really great against the green canvas colored jacket.

I completed the look with a deep black pair of skinny jeans with a fun Fleur de Lis on the pockets. The jeans were thick, but so soft and comfy. I love black skinny jeans, and these are so dark that I have no fears of the color fading!

All together, the jacket, jeans and plaid top made for an extremely comfortable, trendy and warm fall outfit. Now all I can hope is that it doesn’t start snowing any time soon so I can keep wearing my jacket!

7 Roommate Halloween Costume Ideas

$

Halloween is not only great for candy and themed parties, but it’s also a great way to spend time with your roomie. Looking to take your roommate bonding to a new (and more creative) level? Try one of these roommate Halloween costume ideas!

1. Piper and Alex from Orange Is the New Black

Orange Is the New Black completely exploded this year, so Halloween is the perfect opportunity to go as a prisoner without having to pick that overused pinstriped jail costume. Try this costume from Spirit Halloween. Brownie points if one of you wears a pair of black, thick-rimmed glasses to channel Alex!

2. Hannah and Marnie from Girls

If you’re up on pop culture and want to be two millennials for Halloween, you and your roomie could dress up (and act) like the ever anxiety-ridden Hannah and Marnie from Girls!

For Hannah, dress up in your favorite hipster duds: loafers, colorful prints, a baggy T-shirt and high-waisted pants. For Marnie, channel your most chic and put-together self! Wear a body-hugging dress, heels and your hair slicked back in a clean ponytail.

3. Kim and Kris Kardashian

Dressing up as Hollywood’s biggest divas is a great excuse for you to act sassy and get dressed up in something sexy, especially if you’re going to be Kim. Some key pieces you should definitely include in your costumes are large sunglasses, oversized handbags, at least one item with animal print and high heels. If you’re going as Kim, wear a bodycon dress or really any outfit that hugs your curves. If you’re going as Kris, be sure to wear some big hoop earrings. Kudos if you manage to find a prop to act as baby North (even if it’s just a wrapped-up blanket you can cradle!).

4. Max and Caroline from 2 Broke Girls

Max and Caroline are a great duo to dress up as. You and your roommates may be best friends, just like they are, and you both may also be on a budget! To channel Max and Caroline in their signature diner uniforms, you can either purchase a waitress costume or try and scrounge up one from your closets. An oversized yellow T-shirt or dress paired with a red apron made from a towel would work.

5. Betty and Wilma from The Flintstones

This costume idea is a great excuse to show a little skin while dressing up as a blast from the past! You can make your own costumes from scratch or find outfits for both Betty and Wilma at a costume store.

6. Tina and Louise Belcher from Bob’s Burgers

You don’t have to be siblings to go out as Tina and Louise this Halloween, as long as you both do your best to nail the kooky girls’ mannerisms (Tina’s classic moan!). Louise’s most classic feature is her bunny-ears hat, but she’s best known for her shrill voice. Tina’s outfit is pretty easy to put together – a blue T-shirt and a navy skirt — so that gives you the chance to focus on conveying her awkwardness!

7. Elsa and Anna from Frozen

If you and your roommate experienced (or are still experiencing) Frozen fever, this costume idea is a no-brainer for you two. Whether you want to go all out and match every single part of the duo’s costumes or you just want purchase certain pieces, like a wig or a sparkly dress, don’t worry, because there are plenty of options out there.

Scrunchies, Spice Girls, body glitter... you know where this is headed. We’re taking a trip down memory lane to relive the products of yesteryear that made us the beauty junkies we are today. Keep scrolling for a major #TBT that’s sure to spark some bittersweet memories.

1. Maybelline Great Lash

Sold at nearly every store check out, the pink and green tube of Maybelline mascara ($4) that can be spotted from miles away has been perfecting collegiettes’ fluttery fringes since its debut (try 43 years ago)—life just wouldn't be the same without it.

2. Body Glitter

All who used to slather body glitter on their bodies, raise your hands. Since that’s everyone, allow us to introduce to you an updated version—NYX Cosmetics Roll On Shimmer ($4), which can be used on your eyes, face and body.

3. Sun In

Your ticket to highlights or ombré strands without paying a pretty penny? Sun In’s tropical-scented hair lighteners ($5). Forgo a trip to the salon and pick up a bottle at your local Walgreens or Ulta.

4. Bath & Body Works

Who ever said it was okay to walk around smelling like a mixture of cucumber and melon? Admittedly, most of us. Bath & Body Works’ cucumber melon everythingbody lotion ($11), shower gel ($11) and fragrance mist ($13)—is still going strong since its heyday of the '90s. We won't lie though, we kind of miss the old packaging (and probably have some old bottles lying around from when we used to stock up at the Semi-Annual Sales).

5.  Hard Candy

When matching your nails to your ring was a thing, there was Hard Candy Nail Polish ($3)—and fortunately, there still is. Though they no longer come with a ring (tear), you can pick up a sleek bottle of their funky colors at Walmart.

6. L'Oréal Kids Shampoo

Before a shampoo for every hair type imaginable entered our lives, the neon fish bottle reigned supreme (occasionally filling in for rubber ducky). The next time you’re in the mood for some splish-splashin’ in the bath, head over to Bed Bath & Beyond or Walgreens.

7. Bonne Bell Lip Smackers

We saved the best for last: Dr. Pepper-flavored Lip Smacker ($2) chapstick, because any product that moisturizes lips and satisfies a sweet tooth (sans added sugar) will forever be dear to our hearts. Get any of the yummy chapsticks during your next trip to Target or at drugstore.com

'Fess up, collegiettes—how many of these '90s beauty products did you used to worship? What are some of your other fave '90s beauty goodies?

The 5 Most Wearable Winter Runway Trends

$

For many collegiettes, icy winter weather means cold walks to class – which means the swapping of your favorite ankle booties for snow boots and light trench coats for heavy parks. But the winter blues don’t have to result in the fashion blues, too! In fact, many of winter 2014’s biggest trends will keep you just as toasty as your snow gear. We rounded up the biggest trends for this winter and got advice from the experts about how to style them while still staying warm and snuggly in the most brutal of winter weather.

1. Knockout Knits

Knits and sweaters are staples of every winter, but this winter is going to be knit madness like we’ve never seen it before. The major shape of the season? Chunky, oversize and statement-making. “Knits are huge this fall, literally!” says Elizabeth Kamm, a Boston-based stylist. The Row (pictured above) showed plenty of turtleneck and cowl-neck shapes, and even some pieces that aren’t traditionally knitted, such as skirts and pants. We love the way this trend allows us to walk around feeling like we’re wearing our favorite fuzzy blanket, especially on cold winter mornings when it’s nearly a superhuman feat to get out of bed.

The key to pulling off this trend is to go oversize but still fitted with your sweaters—this means the shoulder seams should still match up with your shoulders, so try on your size and the size above yours. You want to be stylish in your sweater, not swimming in it! Feeling adventurous and want to give the sweater skirt a try? We recommend a simple, loose-fitting shape that lets the fabric do the talking. To style these snuggly knits, Kamm says, “All these styles look great with skinny jeans and ankle boots, or with opaque tights and an A-line mini skirt with a mid-calf-length boot.” Just add a peppermint mocha and you’ll be cozy and comfortable!

2. Warm and Fuzzy

Think fur is reserved for Cruella De Vil and the inside of UGG boots? This winter, designers say to think again. The runways were filled with fur, but not your grandmother’s mink coat. Designers, like in this look from Sacai, used fur as a statement-making accent on the runways this season. Many looks included fur coats with long, shaggy fur in both neutrals and bright pops of color – a refreshing, modern take on the classic textile. For collegiettes who may not want to wear the real thing, there are plenty of faux-fur options in stores this season, too, which are also much more budget-friendly than real fur.

Fur can be one of the more intimidating winter 2014/2015 trends to pull off because it makes such a big statement, but don’t stress, collegiettes! The trick to pulling off any trend is to ease into it. For the fur-phobic, your best bet is to try it in small doses. Denise Caldwell, fashion expert and contributing style editor at Seventeen, says, “I am a huge fan of the faux-fur vest (try belting it to cinch your waist creating a slimming silhouette) or cropped jacket in faux fur. It’s the perfect way to add a touch of drama and warmth.” Still wary? Try one of the many fuzzy-textured cardigans that are everywhere this season, which add a touch of fur that isn’t overwhelming. Ready to go all out with the fur trend? Try a shaggy fur jacket in a cool gray color for a chic, model-off-duty look. An added plus of the fur trend: polar vortex repeat? No problem.

3. Clean and Simple

Even with all the shaggy furs and oversize knits, designers still showed a lot of love to the minimalist look this season. This minimalism is anything but plain or boring. Yes, there was a lot of simple black and white, but designers used other neutral colors (like gray and camel) as well as unusual lines and shapes to keep things interesting. Menswear shapes, like blazers and tailored pants, were especially popular.

Clean and Simple

Simplicity definitely doesn’t have to be boring! The trick to this trend is to think outside the box when it comes to proportions and shapes. Instead of a basic black blazer, try an extra-long, boxy shape paired with a graphic tee and black cigarette pants. Minimalism doesn’t mean anti-prints, either. We’re loving the simple black-and-white grid print lately. Try it in a pair of pants or a skirt paired with your favorite sweater. Minimalism this season is all in the details.

4. It’s a Long Story

Midi skirts (skirts that hit anywhere from below the knee to just above the ankle) ) were all over the runways, like in this look from Rebecca Minkoff, replacing the shorter shapes of previous seasons.

It's A Long Story

A big misconception about this trend is that midi skirts have to be worn with heels, but this shape looks great with flat ankle boots, which are very on trend for winter and will keep you much warmer in snowy weather. Try it with your favorite sweater and a knit beanie and you’ll be ready to brave the cold in, yes, a skirt!

5. All Laced Up

One of winter’s biggest trends is underwear – but it’s not what you think! Many designers sent looks down the runway that were clearly lingerie-inspired – think sheer fabrics, black lace trim and soft, feminine shapes. We love the way this look from Elie Saab uses lace. The sheer fabric and lace makes it sexy, even though it’s a covered-up, long-sleeved maxi dress.

All Laced Up

Lace and sheer fabrics can be tricky to pull off for winter because they aren’t warm. Therefore, it’s important to layer, layer, layer. “A lace cami or even peek-a-boo bra moment can always glam up a casual boyfriend cardigan or cocoon blazer,” Kamm says. Even a lingerie-inspired cami can work for winter’s freezing temperatures if paired with a cardigan and a coat or leather jacket on top. Another trick is to look for pieces with lace trim and accents, which are warmer than the all-lace pieces you might pick for warm weather. Try a skirt with a lace hem paired with your favorite sweater, black tights and ankle booties, and voila—instant winter date outfit with a chic, feminine touch.

If there were ever a time to break your winter style rut, winter 2014 is the season to do it! These effortless trends have you covered so you can stay cozy and warm without sacrificing style. Which of these winter fashion trends do you plan to try this season? Tell us in the comments!

How to Be a Better Ally

$
0
0

It’s 2014, and many college students like to think of themselves as progressive and inclusive. Lots of us know (or are!) members of the LGBTQ+ community: We may be good friends with someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, we may have an LGBTQ+-identifying family member or we may work with someone who identifies. No matter your connection to the community or how you identify, it is really important to know how to be a good ally. Why? Because we never know who identifies as LGBTQ+, and we want to make sure that not only do they feel comfortable coming out to us, but that they know that we 100 percent have their back.

Olivia Guerrieri, a senior student worker in the Gender & LGBTQIA Center at Elon University, helped us come up with tips for how to be a strong ally to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Read on so you can be the best ally you can be!

1. Don’t think you’re exempt

Being an ally doesn’t just go for straight folks. Even those of us who identify as LGBTQ+ may have something to learn about how to be better allies! Ever heard of biphobia or transphobia? Homophobia isn’t the only way that we fail our fellow LGBTQ+ folks.

Make sure that you’re always on the lookout for how you can better support people beyond the gay male. We tend to get so caught up in that narrative (especially in the media) that we forget about everyone else and how much we all need and deserve support.

2. Watch your words

So you walk into a classroom filled with people with long hair and stereotypically girly clothing and say, “Hey, girls!” Maybe you don’t even think about it, but for someone in the room, that gendering may be really uncomfortable.

To be a great ally, try not to make assumptions about preferred gender pronouns. Make it a norm for you to ask people which pronouns they prefer. We know this can be awkward at first—after all, we live in a society that encourages us to look and decide what gender someone is. However, it can be really empowering for people to be able to identify themselves.

Furthermore, be careful about slurs. “Point out when friends say things that could be hurtful—even if you know they're ‘just joking,’ someone else might not,” Olivia says.

Just because you have one gay friend who’s okay with the F-word or a lesbian friend who is okay with the D-word doesn’t mean that all members of the gay or lesbian community are cool with it. Same goes for the T-word.

3. Know your privilege

Straight collegiettes, one of the first things you have to learn is that straight privilege is a very real and very unfortunate thing. Straight privilege is defined by The Gender Equity Resource Center at UC Berkeley as “benefits derived automatically by being (or being perceived as) heterosexual that are denied to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, queers and all other non-heterosexual sexual orientations."

Think about how easily you throw around the word “boyfriend” without flinching. This is something that your bisexual or lesbian friends don’t get to do without stressing out. Same goes for going on dates, engaging in PDA or even just asking someone to formal.

Cisgender collegiettes (meaning those who currently identify with the gender that they were given at birth), one of the first things you have to learn is that cis privilege is real. Recognize the little ways in which we privilege those who do not identify as transgender (meaning those who identify with a gender different than the one they were given at birth). Discrimination is huge for trans people.

“Understand your privilege as an ally, and don't get upset if you feel ‘excluded’ by the community sometimes,” Olivia says. “Remember that people who identify as LGBTQ+ feel excluded everywhere else in society, and that having an exclusive community of people who truly understand these issues can be incredibly beneficial.  You can be the most supportive, involved ally in the world, but you still don't know, and you will never know, what it's like to identify as LGBTQ+.”

4. Vote

Once you recognize your privilege, it’s a good idea to put your new perspective into action. One way to do this is by voting. Go out and get political; vote, and not just for the president! Vote in your local and state elections to keep anti-gay laws off the books. What better way to show your love and support than to make sure that the heterosexist laws in place are taken down in order to make room for a more supportive structure?

Members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve to be safe in their workplaces, in schools and everywhere else. Make sure that the law protects the people you care about. Research what your elected officials’ views are.

5. Respect all identities

Maybe you don’t understand why someone isn’t okay with identifying strictly as a lesbian, or why someone doesn’t feel that the gender they were assigned matches up with how they identify—to be honest, it doesn’t really matter. No one has to explain their gender or sexual identity to anyone. Be careful not to label people unless they’ve labeled themselves in such a way.

As Olivia says, “Don't assume your friend identifies as a lesbian because you saw her on a date with another girl.” For real. Just listen and go with it.

6. Speak up

Being an ally sometimes means stepping forward and putting yourself on the line for the people you care about. So now you know how to be an ally—awesome! Go teach others to do the same. Talk about it. Write about it. It isn’t enough to have inclusive thoughts; you need to take inclusive actions as well.

“Be that obnoxious person who stops conversations to correct offensive language,” Olivia says. Friends don’t let friends get away with throwing around slurs or stereotypes.

Another important point is that it isn’t always easy to be an ally. “The hardest time to be an ally is when you're in spaces outside of the LGBTQ+ community,” Olivia says. “Allies aren't as helpful if they're closeted.  Let everyone know you're an ally!”

7. Know when to step back

Though there will be times when your voice is needed, there are other times when an LGBTQ+ space needs to be an LGBTQ+ space. If you identify as heterosexual, you have to be careful not to speak over the voices of queer folks. If you identify as cisgender, you have to be careful not to speak over the voices of trans folks. If you identify as gay or lesbian, you have to be careful not to speak over the voices of bisexual and pansexual folks—making sense so far?

Basically, know when you are needed, and know when you aren’t. In our culture we like to act like members of the LGBTQ+ community are voiceless, when so often they are speaking and just being ignored or shut down.

For example, if you’re in a situation where you are with queer people and do not identify as queer, don’t be the one talking about the queer experience because, chances are, your LGBTQ+ friends have a better understanding than you do. However, if you are in a space without any openly queer friends, and you want to help educate someone, it’s your time to shine!

Collegiette Sarah says, “Don’t expect some sort of high praises or a space in the LGBTQ+ community. Having allies is great, but I've come across some pretty haughty ones, and there doesn't always seem to be much of a difference between them and non-allies, because they're too busy talking over us and not listening.”

We know that sometimes it’s really hard to be an ally. It’s also difficult to reach out and ask your friends to be better allies. We all want to be good to our friends, and being an ally is a part of that. With these seven tips in mind, you can help shape our culture into one that is more supportive of members of the LGBTQ+ community. If we work together, we can create a culture not only of tolerance and respect, but also of love.

Taylor Swift's Best Looks (And the '1989' Tracks That Match Them!)

$

"1989" has been the number on everyone’s lips lately—it’s the title of reigning queen-of-pop Taylor Swift’s new album. If you haven’t heard it yet, don’t worry—these catchy, fun songs will definitely be following in the footsteps of T-Swift’s other massive hits. In honor of the release of her brand new album, we rounded up Taylor Swift’s 8 best looks, from the street to the red carpet to the stage, and picked the new tunes that go with them.

1. “Welcome to New York”

Taylor’s cute matching crop-top-skirt combo paired with bold accessories goes perfectly to the tune of the opening track on 1989, “Welcome to New York.” Not to mention she wore this look while out for a stroll in one of the most iconic NYC locations: Central Park.

2. “Shake It Off”

Unfortunately, Taylor’s appearance at the 2009 VMA’s was marked by some, ahem, unexpected interruptions. Kanye interruption or no Kanye interruption, Swift looked dazzling in a Kaufman Franco that allowed her to outshine the night’s unexpected events. T-Swift says it best: “the haters gonna hate, hate, hate...”

3. “This Love”

Throwback! We won't ever forget the curly curls and the country-girl chic that Taylor used to embody. Her “Love Story” music video played out every girl’s fairytale fantasy—and it was fitting that she had the gorgeous white Cinderella-esque gown to match. Like the “Love Story” video, “This Love,” is another sweet, haunting track about great, passionate love.

4. “Style”

Swift certainly went out in style in this chic, bright yellow frock at a party in NYC with her close friend, supermodel Karlie Kloss. This is definitely one of Swift’s most fashion-forward looks yet, and as she sings in her new track “Style,” she really has that “red lip classic thing that we like,” going on here.

5. “Out of the Woods”

This gorgeous nude and sparkly red-petaled Jenny Packham dress from the 2012 CMA awards was the perfect choice to coincide with the release of her album Red. Her recent hit “Out of the Woods,” describes an intense and passionate love as bold as the red sparkle on her dress.

6. “I Wish You Would”

In what was probably her most memorable video, Taylor had many looks, and played both the evil cheerleader teen-queen and the shy, awkward underdog who gets the guy—leaving us with tons of laughs and ‘awws.’ We have to admit, we kind of love her geeky look, oversized glasses and all. “I Wish You Would,” is a similar tune about wishing for a love that won’t happen.

7. “Blank Space”

Taylor sparkled in this short, swingy dress she wore for her Sparks Fly tour. We love the way the fringe makes it look as if sparks were actually flying. Like in the sassy tone of the upbeat “Blank Space,” this was Taylor at her strongest and finest.

8. “Wildest Dreams”

Like her new song “Wildest Dreams,” Taylor showed off stunned in a dress any girl would dream of wearing: this gorgeous, sophisticated wine-toned trumpet gown at the 2013 Golden Globe awards. Darker colors are an unexpected pick for her, but she totally works this bold, glammed-up look.

T-Swift definitely has the style-creds to go with her music talent. Do you have a favorite 1989 track, collegiettes?

11 Throwback Halloween Costumes Every ‘90s Girl Will Love

Everyone loves a #tbt, and even though Halloween this year is on a Friday, it’s still the perfect chance for an old-school reference as a costume. Here are some Halloween costumes every ‘90s girl will love!

1. Lizzie McGuire

Lizzie McGuire is too classic not to be your Halloween costume! If only your closet was as cool as hers back in the day. All you need are some super-bright, patterned bell-bottom pants and an equally vibrant top. Crimp your hair (if you still own one of those ancient artifacts), throw on a thick headband and you’re good to go. You can even get two friends to join you as Gordo and Miranda, because where would Lizzie be without her awesome sidekicks?

2. The Powerpuff Girls

Sugar, spice and everything nice. These little girls were kicking butt back in the ‘90s and still dealing with all the troubles of being a kid (how old were they actually?).

These costumes couldn’t be easier. All you need are some white tights, some black shoes and a pink, green or blue dress. You can fashion a black belt out of felt, and you’re ready to fight crime and the forces of evil!

3. Rugrats

These babies were the ultimate tight-knit crew and will make the perfect Halloween costume for a group. Just put together some makeshift diapers out of towels or fabric. If you dress up as Chuckie, you’re gonna need to get a wig for his classic hairdo. However, for everyone else, all you really need is a bald cap, a bow or pigtails. You can decorate oversized shirts with felt in the appropriate patterns. You can even bring bottles with you if you so choose. Who run the world? Babies.

4. Saved by the Bell

Going out as the Bayside crew is also a great option. It’s all about bright patterns, big shoulder pads and even bigger hair. Hit up Goodwill for some oversized sweaters, mom jeans and tank tops. The tighter and higher the pants, the better. If you can find an old-school cellphone, you may be in the running for best throwback costume of the weekend.

5. The Rocket Power Gang

If you have a group and are trying to be a total skater bro all night, this is the costume for you. Otto needs some crazy hair, a headband, a yellow shirt and red shorts. Reggie needs a purple wig (or temporary hair dye), a magenta shirt with a yellow rocket decal attached and camo pants. Twister needs a white shirt with a blue tank layered over it and khaki cargo shorts. Squid needs an oversized yellow shirt with a red “N” on it, glasses, jeans and a makeshift shark helmet. Your group is gonna be riding around the streets with the ultimate old-school swag.

6. Mario Kart

This is another fun group costume. You and your friends can dress up as your favorite characters. Overalls, appropriately colored T-shirts, hats and a mustache work for Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Try a pink dress for Princess Peach or a yellow dress for Princess Daisy along with tiaras if you want. And Toad just needs a toadstool hat and a blue shirt. You can basically turn any of the characters into a costume!

Each of you then can paint your own box “car” with balloons attached, and you’re ready to hit the speedways this Halloween.

7. Spice Girls

People of the world, SPICE UP YOUR LIFE… with this Halloween costume! You have your choice between Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice and Posh Spice. Make sure to wear some serious platform shoes. Then, follow each of the girls’ style. Scary Spice requires the signature crazy hair and some sort of animal-print dress. You can’t be Baby Spice without the pigtails. Sporty is the comfiest with her athletic gear (swishy pants and a crop top not optional). Ginger Spice always rocks the Union Jack dress, and Posh should have a tight, short LBD.

8. Britney Spears throughout the ages

It’s Britney, b*tch. The pop princess will give you multiple options for costumes, whether you want to go solo or as a group.

“…Baby One More Time” is always a crowd-pleaser. All you need are braided pigtails, a tied-off cardigan and button down, a schoolgirl skirt, high socks and Mary Janes. If you can somehow find a red latex bodysuit, you’ve got a solid costume for “Oops!... I Did It Again.” Whatever you decide on, don’t forget a fake headset and a lot of sass.

9. Legends of the Hidden Temple

This may actually be the simplest costume ever! We all loved Legends of the Hidden Temple; the only thing we wanted to do more than be on this game show was to get slimed.

For this costume, you need the shirt in the appropriate colors with your chosen symbol stapled on the front. Then, throw on a helmet and some knee and elbow pads. As a refresher, the teams were the Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes. But let’s be real, the Blue Barracudas were the best.

10. Troll Dolls

When’s the last time you saw a Troll doll? Seriously, think back to those naked little dolls that fell somewhere between creepy and cute.

This is such an easy costume; all you need is a nude leotard or dress. Pull your hair up around a water bottle stationed on top of your head. Load up on the hairspray, throw on some temporary hair dye and you’re a troll doll! It’s as simple as that. And when else would you get to parade around looking completely naked? Answer: basically never, unless you’re at a nudist colony.

11. Romy and Michele

This movie was a classic! If you can scrounge up some metallic dresses, you’re seriously so lucky and on your way to costume perfection. Hot-glue a feather boa to the hem of your dress, and you’re ready to take on the ultimate high school reunion this Halloween. Add the most blinged-out jewelry and accessories you can find. A giant cellphone would be a great touch, too.

Whatever you decide, you really can’t go wrong with a throwback costume. Everyone loves a classic, so you’ll be a hit this Halloween!

Real Live College Guy: Should I Take Back a Cheater?

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

I dated this guy in high school for two years when we ultimately went to different colleges about 600 miles apart. I loved him so much it hurt. We were determined to do long distance, and it sort of worked for a while, but problems built, the distance just became too much and we broke up. I was happy for a while, but in the end, he wasn't treating me like I needed to be treated, despite the distance.

My only problem is that he keeps floating back in my life, and I end up heartbroken in the end. We split about two months ago and I really thought it was the last time, but I find myself missing him a lot. But in the past, he’s hurt me really badly; he lied and cheated and made me not feel confident in myself. All of my family and friends despise him.

And, speak of the devil: He contacted me about a week ago, telling me how much he wants to see me and how much he misses me.

What should I do? Is he just lonely? I don't know if he is worth letting back into my life or not. –Confused in Kansas

You said it yourself, Kansas: In the end, he just wasn’t treating you like you “needed to be treated.”

Moreover, this guy apparently lied to you and cheated on you. Tack on the fact that your family and friends hate him… I mean, I’m sitting here right now scratching my head and asking myself why this is even a question.

Ignore his pleads for attention. It didn’t work out. For whatever reason, things interfered with his ability to stay loyal and honest, and that’s just not a relationship you want to be in. And before you even think about “just being friends,” you really need to consider if being friends with someone who cheated on you is even worth it. I’ll be honest, Kansas, I’m not big on the whole post-relationship friends thing. It’s weird, it can be awkward and, more often than not (from what I’ve seen), it leads to hook-ups and heartbreak.

He may very well be lonely, but don’t take pity on him. He screwed you over, and while it’s totally natural to miss someone, it isn’t your obligation to involve him in your life again. He made his choices, 600 miles of distance separates you two and I think it’s time for you to move on

The 8 Worst Halloween Treats We Got as Trick-or-Treaters

$

0

There’s no doubt that trick-or-treating was one of your most memorable childhood pastimes. For one night out of the entire year, you got to go around town and bang on strangers’ doors demanding candy. By the end of the night you’d have a bucket full of treasures that you would eat from every day until it was all gone. Though most of the goodies you received were mouthwateringly delicious, there were always those few that you were less than thrilled about. Here are the worst “treats” that you probably ended up trading off with someone else or just tossing out.

1. Good & Plenty

This pretty-looking candy was quite deceiving. On the outside they looked cute and bright, but once you popped one in your mouth, you realized this “candy” was the devil (unless black licorice was your thing - but is it anyone's thing, really?). Why would you fool an innocent child into thinking this was a sweet, tasty confection? It might as well be called Bad & No Thank You.

2. Pretzels

Every neighborhood had a few very health-conscious mothers who took their passion to the next level by giving out pretzel packets. You might’ve put on a smile and said thanks to be polite, but you definitely grimaced the second you left and told your friends to skip that house. Pretzels aren’t bad, but you could eat them any day for a snack, so what’s special about having them on the one night you could go sugar crazy?

3. Raisins

There's something about raisins that made you die a little inside whenever you arrived at a house that was giving them out. Unlike Halloween-themed pretzels, these "treats" didn't even try to disguise themselves as being tasty. Their normal packaging basically said, "I'm not candy, but enjoy!" Nothing was worse than receiving this wrinkly dried fruit on the one night it should have stayed home with the rest of its lunch-box friends.

4. Dubble Bubble

Unless you weren’t allowed to chew gum as a kid, there wasn’t anything too momentous about receiving bubble gum. Not only did those Dubble Bubble pieces lose their flavor before you even got the chance to blow a substantial bubble, but they also turned rock solid in a matter of minutes.

5. Fruit Snacks

Part of the fun of Halloween candy was sneaking around your parents to snag a candy bar just before dinner or right after breakfast. With fruit snacks, there was no need for sneaking around because, well, they were good-old, harmless fruit snacks.

6. Dots

Dots are just weird. They come in bright colors, so you expected pops of flavor, but no, you just got a weird plastic-y vibe that only slightly resembled the fruit they're supposed to represent. Even fruit snacks tasted better. What’s worse is that these suckers stuck to your teeth so badly that even you were crying for your dentist’s sake.

7. Heath Bar

It’s not that Heath bars tasted bad, they just didn't seem to cut it. With so many other better chocolate bars to compete with, somehow this was the one that got picked last to be eaten, kind of like when you get picked last for dodgeball. Also, the word "Heath" so closely resembles the word "health" and the wrapper looks like it could be a protein bar, so maybe that’s why we saved it for last (or for never).

8. Necco Wafers

Necco Wafers were never a hit. Maybe it was the fact that their shape and packaging resembled a roll of quarters, or maybe it was that they tasted like flavored chalk. The choice of flavors didn’t really help either. You had your normal ones like orange and lemon, but then you also had clove? Just... no.

The 10 Most Epic College Halloween Celebrations

$

They say that acceptance is the first step to recovery, so we’re just going to say it: we are too old for trick-or-treating. Instead of running around our neighborhoods with bags full of Kit Kat bars and Twizzlers, we have upgraded to dressing up as provocative animals (à la Mean Girls) and partying on frat row. However, some campuses beat most colleges’ Halloween-themed frat parties with some seriously awesome traditions. Don’t believe us? Check out these 10 spooky celebrations, ranked in order of epicness.

10. Harvey Mudd College’s Halloweiner

Imagine if your two favorite holidays—tailgating season (which basically is one holiday) and Halloween—joined forces to create an out-of-this-world celebration. At Harvey Mudd College, that fantasy is a reality. To start off their Halloween festivities with a bang, students barbeque hundreds (yes, hundreds) of pounds of meat for the entire student body. Halloweiner is basically a tailgate for this highly anticipated holiday.

9. SUNY Geneseo’s Halloweekend

Every collegiette knows that Halloween is no longer a one-night extravaganza, but at SUNY Geneseo, Halloweekend is more than a slew of frat parties. The festivities start with students rooting for their school’s hockey team… in costume.

“Freshman year, my guy friends went as Braveheart in full kilts and school-colored face paint a la Mel Gibson,” says Megan Killea, a graduate of SUNY Geneseo. “My girlfriends and I went as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

The celebration continues with a street fair on Geneseo’s Main Street, which includes a Halloween parade as well as cider donuts—be still, our hearts.

“Even the college kids come out to see it,” adds Megan. “They get their daily dose of nostalgia and innocence before they go home and start pregaming in their costumes.” Meshed with a plethora of Halloween–themed parties, what could be better?

8. UNC-Chapel Hill’s Celebration on Franklin Street

Parades are one thing, but not many towns shut down an entire street to celebrate Halloween. Franklin Street, which is right by UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus, is one of the coolest places to be on this frightful night. On Halloween night, the town of Chapel Hill blocks off Franklin Street so college students and residents can roam the empty street. Translation? You and your friends can dress up in crazy costumes and have a few drinks (if you’re of legal age, that is).

“I've heard that it's so popular that other schools in North Carolina send busloads of students to Chapel Hill that night, although I know the police department has tried to discourage that,” says Alex Gladu, a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill and HC’s Life Editor.

According to the town of Chapel Hill’s website, this event attracts anywhere from 30,000 people (in 2013) to a whopping 80,000 attendees (in 2007). Between the large traffic this celebration receives and the ghoulish Halloween spirit, it’s no surprise that authorities have tightened up security. In 2008, Town Manager Roger L. Stancil initiated Homegrown Halloween, which strives to reduce crowd sizes and keep Franklin Street safe.

Since safety comes first and foremost, don’t be surprised if this street-wide celebration closes early or there are a lot of police officers patrolling the area—not just cute frat boys dressed up as cops!

7. Pennsylvania State University’s Pumpkin Festival

From selecting the perfect pumpkin at the patch to sketching out a spooky design to cooking pumpkin seeds, creating a jack-o’-lantern is arguably one of the best parts of Halloween. Penn State recognizes just how important carving a pumpkin is, and has dedicated a weeklong celebration to the cause. Though this event is only two years old, this annual collection of jack-o’-lantern festivities merits a spot on our coveted list.

“It’s nice that Penn State and the surrounding community of State College is offering an alternative way to celebrate the holiday rather than just by drinking,” says Erica Kasan, a senior at Penn State. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 10 or 21, Halloween can still be celebrated by everyone in a safe and fun [manner].”

In addition to refreshments, music and crafts, this school’s pumpkin festival also features a pumpkin carving competition. For a very retro twist, winners are rewarded with old-fashioned ribbons. Festive and nostalgic, a good ole carving competition is impossible to resist.

6. MIT’s Pumpkin Drop

Unless you have a knack for parabolas or physics, your ideal pre-Halloween extravaganza probably doesn’t include solving mathematical equations. But what if we told you that MIT’s highly academic event includes smashing frozen pumpkins? Um, what?

Just a few days before Halloween, students and friends watch a select group of classmates drop pumpkins off of the campus’s Green Building, which is 295 feet high. Participants are required to calculate which conditions would make the biggest splash—pun intended. After considering the height, velocity and other factors, these pumpkin smashers are required to put their calculations to the test. Whether or not you have an aptitude for science, how epic does exploding pumpkins sound?

5. UCLA’s All-Hill Halloween

While Halloween frat parties sound fun, they’re all missing one thing: candy. We may be too old to go door to door and beg for candy, but that doesn’t mean we have to outgrow the trick-or-treating spirit. Every year, more than 2,500 elementary and middle schoolers are invited to trick-to-treat all around UCLA’s campus. Instead of going from house to house, attendees go from dorm to dorm. How cute!

“UCLA has always been big about giving back to the community, and All-Hill Halloween is a great example of that,” says Ekta Partani, a senior at UCLA and a HC Campus Correspondent. “It gives these kids a chance to have a safe and fun Halloween. Plus it's absolutely adorable to see all the kids running around in their costumes!”

And when you’re stocking up on delicious sweets for your trick-or-treaters, grab a bag of Hershey’s Kisses for yourself—you deserve it.

4. Georgetown University’s Healy Howl

“Did you know that [insert movie here] was shot at this school?” asks almost every campus tour guide ever. At this point, we feel like we know it all: tidbits of 21 were filmed at Boston University, Johns Hopkins University made a cameo in The Social Network and The Five-Year Engagement was set at the University of Michigan. But did you know that parts of The Exorcist were filmed at Georgetown University? In fact, collegiettes and collegents gather every Halloween to watch the 1973 film on Copley Lawn or in Gaston Hall.

"Watching The Exorcist in Gaston Hall is something that every Georgetown student should do at least once before they graduate,” says Lacey Henry, a senior at Georgetown University and HC Campus Correspondent. “It will definitely make you think twice before using the infamous Exorcist stairs on your way down to M Street!"

Since the movie ends around midnight, students then go to the campus’s cemetery and howl at the moon when the clock strikes 12. Spooky.

3. Texas A&M’s Wicked Woods Haunted Trail

It sounds like something out of a horror movie: a group of fun-loving collegiettes take a spontaneous trip into the woods… only to discover there’s a crazed killer or supernatural creature on the loose who is out to get them. Texas A&M’s Kappa Sigma chapter is set to recreate this horrifying scene for the eighteenth year. And let’s just say this is more epic than your run-of-the-mill fraternity fundraiser. Texas A&M’s student newspaper, The Battalion, reports that this event takes months of preparation, and more than 4,000 people attend the festivities. As the fifth largest haunted trail/house in Texas, according to the fraternity’s website, this scary walk takes attendees through five acres of backwoods. Can we say scariest 15 minutes of our lives?

But before you chicken out of attending this event, don’t forget that this has a philanthropic motive. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to various charitable organizations. If it’s for charity, perhaps we can charge through this trail!

2. University of Rochester’s Scare Fair

To be perfectly honest, libraries give us the creeps: anxiety-inducing aisles, fluorescent lights and the very slim chance that a secret passageway will open as soon as you grab that book off the shelf all make us a little freaked out. So it makes perfect sense that the University of Rochester hosts its famed Scare Fair at Rush Rhees, the school’s main library. For more than 80 years, Rush Rhees has been transformed into a haunted house, which also features a scavenger hunt. And let’s just say the prize is a lot cooler than a gift card to your favorite on-campus burrito restaurant.

“Winners get to go up the old, usually restricted elevators and take a tour of Rush Rhees tower,” says Katherine Varga, a senior at the University of Rochester. “This includes walking around on the dome that overlooks campus and parts of Rochester, [which is] a big deal [because] the only other time people are allowed up there is during Senior Week.”

If spooky scavenger hunts aren’t your thing, the Scare Fair has also been known to display spiders and snakes from the Seneca Park Zoo, as well as some bands from the university. Spooky, but amazing.

1. Ohio University’s Halloween Block Party

You probably attended several block parties when you were growing up, but Ohio University’s spooky variation puts your cul-de-sac’s soiree to shame (but we’re sure your neighborhood’s version of a block party was just lovely). Located in Athens, Ohio, right by this party school’s campus, this festivity is like a costume party for you and 20,000 of your coolest friends. This year, Athens’s annual event is set to have food and art vendors as well as live music. Though the block party is a great time to get dressed up and hang out with your friends, it can get a little wild.

“Our school paper always reports the number of arrests on the front page of [the next day’s issue], and the majority of them are kids who are visiting from other schools who just wanted to get rowdy,” says Madelyn Gaither, a recent graduate from Ohio University. In 2012, The Athens Messenger reported that 80 attendees were arrested, many for alcohol-related reasons. If you decide to pack your bags and head to Ohio this year, be careful—having a rap sheet is so not collegiette-approved.

5 Halloween-Colored Makeup Trends You Can Still Rock on Campus

$

0

Halloween is a time for bold, colorful makeup that's fun to apply and even more fun to rock, so why limit your statement-making beauty looks to one night a year? With a few tweaks you can sport your favorite spooky beauty trends all fall and winter long!

1. Orange blush

Orange blush can easily look clownish, so the trick is finding the right shade for your skin. If you're pale, a more peachy-coral shade will give you a touch of color without looking too harsh. The darker your skin, the more vibrant you can go with your orange blushes... just make sure to keep the color on the apples of your cheeks and blend, blend, blend! To balance out the orange on your cheeks, apply a sheer coral lip stain to tie it all together. Try shades from the NARS Cosmetics' Orgasm collection ($30).

2. Forest-green eyeliner

This trend is dramatic and alluring all year round, and surprisingly easy to do! Choose a green pencil or gel liner (like Almay's Intense I-Color Defining Liner, $4.99) or even a green powder shadow dampened with a makeup mixing fluid and draw a reasonably thick line from the inner corner to the outer corner of your eye, winging it out slightly. You can leave it there or add a thinner line of black liner right along your lashline to give more definition and make the green pop. Either way, finish off the look with a matte neutral shade blended through the crease and tons of mascara!

3. Midnight blue mascara

Tons of brands now make colored mascaras, but it can be hard to branch out of your usual blacks and browns to try something more adventurous. Midnight blue is a great choice because it's dark enough to provide definition and the color flatters every single eye color. We love Butter London's WINK mascara in Inky Six ($20). To make sure the mascara stands out, avoid any dark shadows or heavy liners and instead cover your lid with a light shimmery shadow, concentrating on the inner corners of your eyes. This will make your eyes appear larger and allow your lashes to be the star of the show.

4. Black nail polish

Dark nails are an autumn and winter staple, but a full-on black can be a bit daunting, not to mention it can easily look grubby and goth. The trick to making this look less costumey and more chic is a high-shine mani. Start by cleaning up your cuticles and cutting and shaping your nails. Use a base coat to keep the dark polish from staining your nails and then apply two coats of a jet black polish, like the Black Holy polish from Floss Gloss ($8). Finish off with a super high-shine top coat for dramatic and sophisticated nails.

5. Ombré vampy lip

The vampy lip is a must for any witch or vampire costume, but it's actually a great option for a statement-making autumn or winter look. Brush a concealer or foundation on your lips to cancel out the natural pinkness and carefully line your lips with a lip liner that matches the lipstick. Using either a deep red, plum or even burgundy lipstick, fill in your lips (matte textures work best for vampy lips!). To create the sexy ombré effect, take a slightly darker lip pencil or lipstick on a brush, and concentrate the darker color around the corners of your mouth and the very top and bottom of your lips to create a multi-dimensional effect. Bite Beauty's Matte Creme Lip Crayon ($24) and the brand's matte Cashmere Lip Cream ($28) pair perfectly together. Pucker up!

We love Halloween, so any excuse to extend the festivous season is more than alright by us! What are your favorite Halloween beauty trends, collegiettes, and how do you make them work for everyday?

Blogger Claire, who also created The Slender Student, a fitness blog about staying fit during the hectic days of college, has adopted The Petite Professional as her new blog persona after graduating college and moving into the business world. Even though her blog name has changed, Claire has promised that all of the recipes and workouts will be just as good as the great recipes from The Slender Student.

One of the reasons these sites are so wonderful is because they demonstrate how great and useful your body really is! Being healthy isn’t just about a number on a scale; it’s about what your body can accomplish and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Whether you’re looking to boost your confidence, get in shape, cook more or just become healthier in general, these health blogs are a great way to help!
