We've found the coolest, most unique jewelty pieces out there that are far from your average jewels—check them out!

Choker Necklace

Asos New Look Chain in Mesh Bar Necklace ($15.14)

Remember those spiral-y black choker necklaces you wore back in the 90s? Well, they're back, and in a better way—modern, chic, luxurious. This chunky, tubular choker is all kinds of cool. The mesh overlay surrounding the inner chain is more or less a shout-out to the ones we wore way back when, but the gold-tone plate is a total ode to today's trends.

Ear Jacket

Bauble Bar Cairo Ear Jacket Set ($38)

The ear jacket is a good way to embrace an edgy look without being too bold. Depending on the size of the jacket, you can achieve a pretty subtle look. This spiky piece is offers a sneaky way of adding an eclectic pop to a simple outfit. At first glance, they look kind of wild, but once they're on, you'll realize that the earlobe-hugging fit is actually very elegant.

Hand Chain

Forever 21 Rhinestone Hand Chain ($6.90)

Part bracelet and part ring, hand chains make arm parties seem... dated. Keep it simple and delicate, like this one from Forever 21, which is dainty with a hint of glam.

Body Chain

Urban Outfitters' Vanessa Mooney Rocksteady Body Chain Harness ($120)

The body chain trend made its way into summer (they look so cute over a bikini at the beach), but just because fall is here doesn't mean you have to put the statement piece away. This version is the perfect accessory to add over a tank and under your cardigan. It's light and simple, but will add a ton of charm.

Ear Wing

Charming Charlie Fly High Ear Wing Set ($12)

Prepare to stun with this small, but ferocious accessory! For a night out on the town, all you honestly need is a cute LBD,  a pair of pumps, and one of these ear wings. No other jewelry necessary. Ear wings are a newer trend that are guaranteed to dazzle whether they wrap around your whole ear or just part of it.

Arm Band

Free People Stretch Upper Arm Band ($28)

The upper arm band is on the rise, so the next time you have a night out with your girlfriends, skip the dangly bangles and opt for a statement piece on your upper arm. This Free People band, gives a perfectly boho vibe to your look, but you can also look for simple gold bands that just exude elegance.

10 Homemade Halloween Costumes You Can Make From Things You Already Have

Halloween is just around the corner, and it seems like every other Facebook notification is an event invitation for a costume party. You might love dressing up, but if you’re running seriously low on cash and can’t drop the big bucks on an expensive costume, each invite can be a huge bummer. That’s why Her Campus found 10 fabulous DIY Halloween costumes for collegiettes on a budget made from items you already have in your closet!

1. '80s Workout Girl

You can’t go wrong with a flashy workout costume from the '80s. Halloween costumes can be so itchy and all around uncomfortable, but in colorful gym clothes, you'll definitely be comfortable! If you have any bright-colored spandex items, this is your chance to wear them. If you don’t own anything like that, have no fear! Just slip on some leggings, throw on an off-the-shoulder top, cozy up in some leg warmers or long socks and tie your hair up in a high ponytail, and you’re good to go!

2. Hippie

Want a Halloween costume that will make you feel groovy? Look no further! This costume can be as simple as a tie-dyed tee and a pair of jeans. If you don’t have a tie-dyed shirt, you can make one without even buying a kit. Follow these instructions to turn an old white T-shirt into a tie-dyed tee using food coloring and vinegar. Straighten your hair and wear it down with a headband or headscarf. Complete your look with a handmade protest sign with a peaceful saying like, “Make Love, Not War.”

3. Waldo

This cute and classic costume is great to wear in a large crowd or at a big party!  All you need to pull it off is a red-and-white striped shirt and hat, circular glasses and a cane (or just a long stick).  You can put a girly twist on this look with a short blue skirt, or keep it comfortable in the chilly fall weather with jeans.

4. Marilyn Monroe

If you’re someone who likes it hot, you can channel the glamour of this classic Hollywood icon with just a simple, sexy white dress; red lipstick; large stud earrings and curled hair.  Though this isn't the warmest attire, a little extra wind will only add to the costume’s effect!

5. Rosie the Riveter

With the gender-equality movement HeForShe gaining popularity, it's a great time to represent feminism through Rosie the Riveter. This costume can be so powerful, yet it requires very little effort to create! Just pair a chambray or denim button-down with a red bandana. For an added touch, apply some red lipstick!

6. Grumpy Cat

If Halloween isn’t really your holiday and you practically have to be dragged out by your friends, channel your lack of spirit by dressing up as Grumpy Cat! As far as clothing, all you really need is a white or tan T-shirt and pants. For your makeup, start by powdering your entire face (white eye shadow works). Next, apply the darkest brown makeup you own, whether it’s eye shadow or bronzer, around your eyes and down your cheeks. For your nose, apply pink blush. Then, use eyeliner or lip pencil for whiskers. Lastly, don’t forget to frown!

7. Old-School Britney

Pay homage to the princess of pop by dressing up like Britney from the “...Baby One More Time” days. All you’ll need is a plaid skirt, a white button-down shirt (knotted in the front to show off your waist) and a grey sweater to complete this look. Put your hair in braided pigtails with ribbons at the ends. Extra credit if you wear knee-high socks. A great group costume would be Britney through the ages – each girl dresses in an iconic Britney outfit!

8. Wednesday Addams

All you need to be Wednesday for Halloween is a white button-down, a black dress or a sweater and pants. Braid your hair in pigtails and finish the look off with heavy, black eye makeup and a dark lip color.

9. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande was one of the most talked-about celebrities this year, so we have a feeling there will be a bunch of Ariana-Grande-inspired costumes this Halloween. The best part about dressing up as her is that there’s no one look you need to embrace. Just choose an outfit that is sparkly, sexy, girly and chic! A circle skirt would work great, as would a fitted peplum top or a dress with a sweetheart neckline. Just be sure to rock her signature sky-high ponytail, your pair of highest heels and thick, winged eyeliner. Bonus points if you never let anyone see the right side of your face.

10. Minnie Mouse

Dressing like Mickey’s main squeeze for Halloween couldn’t be simpler. All you’ll need is a red dress and black tights. Cut out circles of white felt or paper for polka dots and glue them to your clothes. Make a pair of mouse ears out of cardboard or paper and glue them to a headband. Draw on a mouse nose using black eyeliner, and top off the look with a red bow in your hair.

You’ve heard how amazing Birthright is – let’s be honest, your friends just can’t stop talking about it. From their crazy-fabulous stories to their out-of-this-world Facebook albums (filled with breathtaking travel shots and new best friends that came out of nowhere), you can’t help but feel like you’re missing out on a majorly amazing opportunity.

The truth is, you are! But that doesn’t mean you can’t take matters into your own hands and upgrade your winter break ASAP! Taglit-Birthright Israel, a non-profit that offers young Jews between 18 and 26 the gift of a free 10-day trip to Israel, is accepting Winter Trip registrations for ONE MORE WEEK!

While the rest of your friends are at home in the cold or taking winter classes, you’ll travel across the world, experience a thriving culture, float in the Dead Sea, explore high-tech Tel Aviv, shop the open-air markets of Jerusalem, ride camels in the Negev, hang out in waterfalls, raft through the Jordan River and climb to the top of Masada for the most epic sunrise, and that’s just day one! Kidding, that’s like two to three days. Out of 10! Check out the six best reasons to sign up ASAP for your Winter Trip.

1. You get to travel – for free!

“I went on Birthright this past summer, and it was such a unique and fulfilling experience. I floated in the Dead Sea, touched the Western Wall, climbed Masada at sunrise, rode on a camel, spent the night in a Bedouin tent and much more, all in the span of nine days.” – Jamie Kravitz, Emerson College ‘17

“Birthright really makes sure you get to experience the entire country. It’s amazing how much is packed into a 10-day trip.” – Sarah Cahn, Kent State ‘16

“The opportunity to travel is one thing, but the opportunity to travel to a place that I have wanted to go to since I was little was totally different. It was an amazing opportunity, the best trip I've ever been on, and I can't wait to go back. I would do it again in a heartbeat.” – Bari Markowitz, The University of Tampa ‘15

2. You’ll meet new people!

“I was so nervous during the weeks leading up to the trip because I didn't know anyone, but by the time the 10 days were over, it was like I [had] known [those] 40 students my entire life. I met so many new friends. I could honestly say I came back from Israel with 40 close friends and eight Israeli solders that I still keep in contact [with] to this day.”  – Bari

“Before leaving for Israel I only knew one person, but that changed very quickly. I expected everyone to already know each other since almost everyone went to Tulane [and I go to Kent State], but that really wasn't the case. Our first day of the trip we were hiking on Mount Arbel and I was wearing a Chi Omega hat. A girl on my trip noticed the hat and introduced herself to me. She and two other girls [were] Chi Omegas at Tulane!” – Sarah

3. You may find some steamy romance

“No romance for me, but for other girls, YES! Who doesn’t want to have a fling in another country?” – Bari

“It’s pretty common to get cozy with the other people on your trip, or even with the Israeli soldiers. Needless to say, there’s nothing more fun than falling for someone while you’re on such an amazing trip, having the time of your life!” – Lydia, Tufts University ‘14

4. You’ll come back with crazy stories

“I wouldn’t say it was ‘crazy,’ but going out in Jerusalem at night was honestly the coolest thing ever. Jerusalem is one of the holiest cities in Israel, and seeing it in a totally different light at night was amazing.” – Bari

5. You’ll remember it forever

“The friends I made and the amazing places that I saw [are what I’ll remember forever]. I think about Israel every day, and I'm so blessed to say I've gone to Israel (and especially on Birthright).” – Bari

“Starting the day watching the sun rise from the top of Masada and then going straight to the Dead Sea to spend the afternoon floating around in the water - that’s what I’ll always remember. It was amazing. You could basically sit up in the water, so you never wanted to get out, but once you finally did, you got to slather on genuine Dead Sea mud. The pictures of everyone on our trip covered in mud are priceless.” – Quinn Cohane, Bowdoin College ‘13

6. Everyone who’s done it wants YOU to do it, too!

“The entire trip was amazing, and I would do it again if I could. Traveling there helped me learn about Israel and myself, but it can only happen if you actually go.” – Sarah

“YOU NEED TO GO. It’s not like a, ‘You should go’ thing, it’s like a, ‘YOU NEED TO GO NOW’ kind of thing."– Bari

“My advice to anyone considering registering for Birthright is to do it! There are so many trip options - from when you go and [whom] you go with to how you experience Israel while you’re there. I recommend going with your college or another college in your area (which I did). You will come back to school and have a close community of students who were with you on this amazing journey. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s really cool.” – Jamie

Whether you’re going for the chance to travel, make new friends, try exotic foods or experience a different culture, you’ll find everything you’re looking for on your Winter Trip to Israel. Plus, you can choose to go on a trip tailored to your identity or interests, like LGBT or tech-oriented trips! What are you waiting for? Spotted on Shelves: Vita Coco Coconut Oil

By now you've probably heard of the benefits of coconut oil, a favorite of celebs like Miranda Kerr and Emma Stone as well as professionals like Dr. Oz. The Beauty School bloggers were intrigued by this mysterious cure-all product, so I tested out the new Vita Coco Coconut Oil, from the same brand that brings you that delicious Vita Coco Coconut Water you drink after every gym sesh.

The product comes in a cute 16 fl. oz. jar and boasts the fact that this coconut oil is 100% raw, cold-pressed, organic and extra virgin, meaning it's the best, most natural coconut oil you can buy, and it's only $9.99 for 18 fl. oz. on Amazon! I was surprised at the texture of the oil, as it's actually more like a semi-hard wax when you open the jar. The best way to remove product is to take a small spatula or use your fingernail to scrape out a tiny bit of product. When it comes to coconut oil, a little goes a long way—you really only need the smallest amount, and as soon as you warm the product into your hands it melts and dissolves into a rich oil, making it easy to apply to your body. I love how it smells—just like coconuts, and because it's all natural, it wasn't too sweet of a scent. The nutty fragrance is perfect for fall!

While some people eat it raw, coconut oil is super popular among foodies because it's so much better for you than butter or canola oil (it doesn't contain any cholesterol or sodium) and it tastes just as good! There are hundreds of recipes out there using coconut oil in everything from fried chicken to chocolately brownies, and it's an easy (and inexpensive!) way to make your favorite foods a little healtheir.

But since we're beauty obsessives, we decided to see just what we could do with this miracle product in the beauty department. Here are five of our favorite ways to use it:

1. Hand moisturizer

This was my favorite way to use this product. I used the tiniest amount (about the size of a dime) and just worked it together in my hands, letting the warmth of my skin turn it into an oil. Rub the oil into your hands, concentrating on dry areas for added moisture. I keep my Vita Coco on my bedside table and would recommend using it to moisturize your hands every night before bed. Added bonus? Rubbing the oil onto my fingers actually made my mani shinier!

2. Remove makeup

I've used olive oil in the past to remove super stubborn eye makeup (think waterproof mascara or lash glue!) and I thought coconut oil might do the same thing. I shaved off the tiniest bit of product and used my fingers to massage it all over my eyelids and lashes (you will look like a panda, just roll with it). I then took a cotton pad to clean off the oil and makeup. I had to do this process twice on each eye but it did fully remove my makeup and I didn't feel like I had pulled at my skin too much at all.

3. Dry shaving

I had seen a YouTube video on how to use coconut oil in your beauty regimen and one of the tips given was to use coconut oil when you need to shave your legs in a pinch. Sure enough, I found myself in a rush to get out the door but I needed to shave my legs, so I whipped out the coconut oil and massaged a quarter-sized amount into my legs and shaved. I applied a bit more after shaving just to moisturize, though my legs were still pretty soft and a bit oily after shaving. I got a very close shave but unfortunately the next day I had some pretty nasty razor burn on areas that I skimmed over quickly. Bottom line? It works as a last-minute fix, but take your time with the razor and load up on moisturizer after!

4. Deep-conditioner for hair

This trick is perfect for girls with dry hair, especially in the harsh autumn and winter months. I put a few tablespoons of coconut oil in a bowl and microwaved it for about 10 seconds to fully melt and warm the oil. I then applied the coconut oil through the bottom few inches of my hair and brushed it through to distribute it evenly. I flipped my head over and twisted my hair up in a towel and then proceeded to binge watch The Vampire Diaries. After about 30 to 45 minutes, I took my hair down and jumped in the shower, making sure to remove any traces of oil. Do this once a week for shiny, healthy, slightly coconut-y locks!

5. Exfoliation

Rather than spending a ton of money on a fancy exfoliating scrub from the drugstore, why not just make your own with a little coconut oil and brown sugar? Mix together one part coconut oil to two parts brown sugar and apply to your face, arms, elbows, or wherever else you need to slough away dead skin. Brown sugar is less abrasive and more gentle on your skin than white sugar (plus, it smells yummy!). Rinse off or wipe off the exfoliator for smooth and glowing skin! You don't want to exfoliate too often (once a week is good!), as you don't want to over-exfoliate your skin and irritate it.

There are also some people who swear by using coconut oil as a facial moisturizer, but I have combination to oily skin so I found it a bit too rich to use on my face. If you have very dry skin, it might be just what you need to bring dewiness back to your complexion, or if you have normal to combination skin, you can try using it as a night treatment during the colder, dryer months. There are (literally) dozens of other uses for coconut oil, so this is truly a one-size-fits-all kind of product that will address all your beauty needs!

What are your favorite beauty uses for coconut oil, collegiettes?

5 Ways to Make Him Notice You

$

Nervous about making a good first impression on a campus cutie? You’re not alone! To feel prepared, it’s important to know the dos and don’ts of meeting someone new. We spoke to Dr. Patrick Wanis, an expert in human behavior and relationships; Nicole Zasowski, a licensed therapist who specializes in couple’s counseling and young adults; and Jodi RR Smith, the president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, to make sure the advice we give you is only the best! Here are five ways to make sure your first impression is one that will leave any college guy wanting more.

1. Be yourself

You’ll never know if you’re compatible with him if you don’t let your individuality shine! That being said, it’s always a good idea to keep things a bit more short and sweet in the beginning. “Be honest, be truthful, be forthcoming, but you don’t have to reveal your entire life story in the first conversation,” Dr. Wanis says.

We know he’s going to want more after you dazzle him in the first five minutes of conversation, so save some of your stories for later! Smith agrees and encourages us to remember that flirting should be light and fun for the both of you. There’s no need to get too heavy right off the bat. “For first impressions, you want to be your best self. No need to provide an accurate historical retrospective of your life,” she says. Don’t be afraid to let your true colors shine, but save the full rainbow for later!

2. Confidence is key

When meeting new guys, it’s your chance to show off a little! “Confidence is the best accessory at any party,” Zasowski says. She says to remember that by being confident in who you are, you’ll attract the right guy, rather than a random guy. Don’t let yourself get intimidated. He’s lucky to be talking to you!

“I think it’s cool when I can actually have a conversation with a girl,” says Duncan Cummings, a sophomore at Williams College. “A lot of times I think girls can get nervous around guys, but they shouldn’t be! I’m usually just as nervous as she is.”

3. Keep it positive

Never underestimate the power of positivity! While it may sound clichéd, any college guy will feel at ease with a girl who keeps things optimistic and cheerful. There’s no need to be overly enthusiastic, but you should always be aware of the vibe you’re giving off!

Dr. Wanis says one topic to definitely steer clear of is ex-boyfriends. More often than not, talking about your ex will bring back feelings of anger and stress that you don’t want to be reminded of while talking to someone new.

Remembering to ask the guy questions is also an important aspect of the conversation. By doing this, you’re letting him know that you care. Questions will make your confidence come across in a positive way rather than be misconstrued for arrogance.  “Questions naturally reflect that you are interested in getting to know someone’s story,” Zasowski says.

If you’re nervous about having things to talk about, Smith has a few good places to start: “Generally, a question or comment about the venue or event is an easy place to start. Then questions and comments about classes, upcoming breaks and future travel plans all work.”

Remember, the conversation will always be more enjoyable if you’re both contributing equally about things you’re interested in rather than negative past experiences!

4. Know the moves

Nervous you might get caught in the dreaded friend zone with your crush? Here’s the good news – there are subtle ways to let him know you’re interested without being too obvious. “Hold his gaze with a smile for a few seconds, and then look away,” Dr. Wanis says.

Dr. Wanis also recommends casually tossing your hair or stroking your neck or wrist, which are all subtle gestures that will let him know you’re interested.

Smith offers two options depending on what you’re confortable with. “If you are a master flirt, move away from your group – maybe towards the bar – and see if he moves to meet you,” she says. “If you are a more direct kind of gal, if he smiles back at you, simply walk over to say hello.” These mannerisms will give off flirty signals he’s sure to pick up on.

5. Dress for yourself, not him

As stylish college women, we never underestimate the power of a great outfit! There’s no better feeling than strutting your stuff in an amazing new pair of skinny jeans or a chic cashmere sweater. So when you’re meeting a new guy, dress for you, not him—wear what you love, and you’ll feel comfortable and confident!

Will Davino, a sophomore at Colgate University, appreciates individual style. “When I’m talking to a girl, there’s not really an outfit she has to be wearing for me to be interested,” he says. “You can usually tell the vibe of a girl by her outfit, so its awesome if she stays true to her own kind of style.”

Your distinctive style is one of the things that makes you who you are, so show it off!! “The way you dress is a great opportunity to reflect your unique personality and style,” Zasowski says. The outfit you feel the best in is exactly the one you should be wearing.

Your confidence will be immediately boosted if you feel good in what you have on. However, Smith urges us to remember that the outfit comes second; it’s what’s inside that counts! “A college woman with brains and confidence, even in a burlap sack dress with a rope belt, can dazzle any guy with her eye contact, funny stories and smile,” she says.

Still nervous abouttalking to your crush? Don’t be! Use these tips to your advantage. We’ve given you the expert advice, and now it’s your turn to show off! We know there’s a college guy out there for you just waiting to be impressed. Time to shine, ladies!

How to Nail Your College Interview

$

After countless hours of SAT and ACT prep courses, endless drafts of personal essays and tackling the monster that is the Common App, you think you have it all down when it comes to the college admissions process. But then you receive a notice about your admissions interview—now you have to impress someone in person enough to make him or her let you into college.

Never fear, collegiettes! We’ve talked to students all around the country as well as Michelle Podbelsek, a college admissions counselor and co-owner of College Counseling Associates, to answer all of your questions about college interviews.

What are college interviews and why are they important?

College interviews are, unsurprisingly, interviews that you go on to help colleges and universities decide your admission status. They give the colleges another opportunity besides your personal essay and other application supplements to get to know you for you and not just the bullet points on your resume.

Interviews are crucial to making your application sparkle when admissions officers are deciding whether or not to admit you to the school. Make sure you seize this opportunity to show the school your true self!

Where will the interview take place?

Answering this question can be pretty tough because these interviews can happen anywhere from the college’s admissions office to someplace local, like Starbucks or Panera.

“The interview I went on in the admissions house was way scarier than the one I did at the coffee shop,” says Chrissy Brenstein, a freshman at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “I ended up getting into the school that was in the admissions house, though, and waitlisted at the other school, probably because I was almost too relaxed in the coffee shop.”

If your interview is scheduled to take place in an office on the college’s campus, remember to relax and be genuine. If your interview is going to take place someplace local or more casual, remember: You might feel more relaxed and at home, but don’t let that make you forget that you’re having a professional conversation!

Schools typically reach out to you to schedule your interview; once the interview is scheduled, they will let you know where it will be taking place. Some colleges even advertise where they hold their interviews.

Most of the time, the person who will actually interview you depends on the location. Admissions representatives or people who are on location for the school usually hold interviews conducted in admissions offices; interviews that take place at local coffee shops and the like are usually conducted by alumni or regional representatives of the college.

Remember that not all interviews are the same: While one might take place at one location in one fashion, another might be completely different. Make sure you go by what the college tells you and roll with the punches to be successful!

Whom will I be talking to?

Like the location of your interview, the person you’ll be talking to depends on the interview. Some colleges have prospective students talk to admissions representatives; others have prospective students talk to alumni of the school. “Sometimes even a senior in college does the interview,” Podbelsek says. Your interview could be with anyone, so be prepared for anything!

Although your interview can be with anyone, know that the university you’re interviewing with will let you know in advance who your interviewer will be. They will also let you know how to sign up for an interview; this is something you can find on the college’s website or through their application.

“I had one interview with a student and another with an adult representative in admissions,” Chrissy says. “The one with the admissions person was a little bit easier, to be honest, because I knew for sure that I should be sort of formal. With the student I didn’t really know where I stood [in] regards to being formal and being relaxed.”

When a student admissions ambassador conducts your interview, remember not to go over the top while trying to impress him or her—these people are only a few years older than you and could potentially be your peers. You want to make sure that while you’re being formal and presenting yourself in a positive light, you’re also being genuine in order to make a connection with someone your age.

This is also your chance to ask someone for firsthand information about what the college is like. By striking up conversation about the culture on campus or about specific clubs, you will make a more sincere connection.

Remember: As a young adult, you can smell a brown-noser from a mile away. Although you definitely want to be respectful and personable with a student admissions ambassador, know that they will be able to recognize disingenuous students the same way you would be able to.

No matter whom your interview is with, make sure you are putting your best foot forward. Mind your manners, but most importantly, be yourself.

What do I wear?

Ah, one of the most important questions for girls when attending any event: What do I wear? College interviews can be particularly tricky because it can be tough to tell what’s too formal and what’s not formal enough.

“[Dress in] business casual—what you would wear to your grandmother’s birthday party or to a decent restaurant,” says Podbelsek.

Shira Kipnees, a senior at Franklin & Marshall College, did exactly what Podbelsek suggested for her interviews. “I usually wore a dress or really nice shirt and skirt with heels,” she says. “However, I kept everything appropriate, like something I would wear if I were going to services in any place of worship.”

Try to sense the tone of the interview based off of where the interview is going to take place or whom you’re going to be interviewed by. If you’re going to the admissions office, try to keep it dressy; if you’re going to Panera, still keep it classy, but maybe leave your dress pants in the closet and opt for a cute dress instead.

“One [interview of mine] took place at a local Starbucks,” says Gabrielle Hughes, a freshman at Syracuse University. “I seemed way too overdressed, because the young female alum was in a green Free People jacket and jeans.”

Wherever your interview takes place, make sure you make an impression not only with your personality, but with how you look, too. Show your interviewer that you’re a confident and put-together collegiette who will definitely excel at his or her college.

What should I bring?

For admissions interviews, the most important things for you to bring are yourself and your sparkling personality. It’s important to make a good impression using your personality and nothing else; you should show that you have a lot to contribute to the college or university just by being you! That said, pre-collegiettes should also remember a few other things to put in their purses before the meeting.

It’s important to have a resume to give to your interviewer if he or she asks, but don’t shove it down his or her throat! Remember, the college has all of that stuff in your application, so only pull it out if your interviewer asks for it.

“[Students] could also bring a notecard with a few main accomplishments [and] points they want to make,” Podbelsek says. You could also write down a few questions you know you want to ask as well. “When the interviewer asks if they have questions, [the prospective student] can pull out the card with their own questions written down and also see if they forgot to say something they wanted to mention,” Podbelsek says.

Just like giving an oral presentation, it’s not a bad thing to have a few notecards to give you cues. Just need to remember that the interview will be stronger if it’s more like a conversation between yourself and the interviewer, so don’t read directly off of your notecards!

What will the interviewer ask me?

You guessed it: In your interview, you’re going to be asked questions. But what should you expect?

Most interviews are used to find out if you are a good fit for that specific college, so don’t be surprised if they ask you specific questions about you in relation to the college. Many interviewers even ask what they can tell you about the college (see “What should I ask?” below!).

“I remember the hardest question I had to answer was what I wanted to major in,” says Callie Johansson, a junior at Florida State University. “I had literally no idea at the time, so I just started spouting off different academic interests I had. I think the interviewer appreciated that I was still able to come up with something that I was interested in.”

To prepare for the interview, start looking at the different programs and activities the school has to offer and start imagining yourself taking part in them. By prepping yourself with that, you’ll be ready to answer any of the questions your interviewer throws your way.

What should I ask?

You might’ve thought that your interviewer would be asking you all the questions and you’d be giving the answers, right? Wrong. Asking good questions is just as important as giving good answers!

“The best [questions] are ones that are particular to that student in relation to that college,” Podbelsek says. “They should never ask something they can just find on the website, but instead put things into context. Also, if the interviewer went to the school, [the prospective student] should ask about his/her own experiences [and] pros and cons they noticed.”

Make sure that you ask questions that not only show that you’re interested in the school, but also show parts of your personality, too.

“I asked my interviewer very specific questions about clubs, theatre, whether or not to join a sorority and the communications programs,” Gabrielle says.

Should I be nervous?

It’s completely natural to be feeling nervous about an admissions interview—applying to college is a big deal! But is it something to preoccupy your mind day in and day out? Probably not.

Out of the collegiettes we talked to, many got accepted to schools they thought they had great interviews at and rejected from some they thought they nailed, so do your best, but don’t stress!

“I ended up getting rejected from a school where I had a great interview,” says Katherine Varga, a senior at the University of Rochester. “I currently attend (and love!) a school with a humdrum interview. I don't think the interview will make or break your admissions decision, but it's a good way to show that you're interested in the school.”

While the interview process is definitely part of the picture you’re painting for an admissions team, it’s not the whole thing. Don’t let your interview loom over your head—just relax and take this as a chance to supplement the application you’ve already sent in.

How do I make a positive impression?

Even if your interview isn’t the whole thing you’re being judged on, you still want to do your best. Make sure you’re leaving a great impression on your interviewer by being your genuine self. Podbelsek suggests three simple things to concentrate on to make a great and lasting impression; this way, your brain won’t be on overload and you won’t be stressing throughout the whole conversation.

“Look the interviewer in the eyes when talking, sound confident and passionate about [your] answers and always elaborate enough on the answers you give so that you show what an interesting person you really are,” Podbelsek says.

Between those tips and your already awesome personality, you’ll be sure to leave a positive impression on your interviewer!

Should I follow up afterwards?

Between Facebook, LinkedIn and thank-you notes, pre-collegiettes can be a little confused about the best next step to take following an interview.

“Send[ing] an email or written thank-you note within a week or two I think is the best,” Podbelsek says.

When you write your thank-you note (whether it’s handwritten or by email), don’t thank the interviewer only for his or her time. Let him or her know that you had a pleasant time meeting him or her, that you really appreciated a specific nugget of information you learned and that you’re excited to hear from the school again.

We recommend that you do not connect with your interviewer via social media. For starters, LinkedIn is for job networking, and if you even use it as a pre-collegiette, it isn’t quite appropriate for college admissions. Don’t friend your interviewer either; Facebook is too casual of a platform to communicate with someone from a prospective college. Even if your interviewer was a student at the school, social media is still a tad inappropriate at this stage in the game. Stick to email or handwritten thank-you notes!

It seems intuitive that admissions interviews, being a part of the college application process, would be extremely stressful, but they don’t have to be! Focus on relaxing and being the best version of yourself, and you’ll be sure to find the perfect school for you.

What Your Halloween Costume Says About You

Boo! Are you ready for Halloween 2014, collegiettes? Whether your plans include attending a crazy party, hosting a scary movie marathon or participating in your school’s kick-ass Halloween tradition, you’re going to need a costume as awesome as you are.

And what message will your costume convey? You may not realize it, but what you dress up as on Halloween says a lot about you!

1. The Group Costume

You and your besties dress up as a group – how else will everyone know how undyingly devoted you are to one another? The group costume exists to send the message that you freakin’ love your best friends (and you don’t care who knows it!). So you whip out your best ‘90s gear as the Spice Girls, duct-tape yourselves into pseudo-iPhone dresses or go wild as zookeepers and animals.

If you’re going to look ridiculous, the group costume ensures that you don’t look ridiculous alone. You may be an individual on any other given day of the year, but Halloween is not that day.

2. The Pop Culture Icon

Miley Cyrus wearing edible jewelry at the Jeremy Scott show? That is the perfect inspiration for the pop-culture obsessed! You have tabs on everything that goes on in Hollywood. Like, literal tabs. On your computer. At any given time, you have E!, Just Jared, Perez and People up on your screen, perusing the newest and most ridiculous celebrity news. You also host Oscar parties, tweet at Kim Kardashian regularly in hopes that she’ll respond and are genuinely pissed that Brad and Angie didn’t invite you when they tied the knot.

You’ll dress up as Nicki Minaj in her “Anaconda” music video, a preggers Kate Middleton or Justin Bieber in his Calvins… and you’ll rock it!

3. The Really Intricate, Homemade Costume

You literally live for Halloween. Not only does it give you the chance to stretch your creative muscles and concoct a costume that everyone will be envious of, but it also means it’s time for your to start making your signature pumpkin cookies that everyone dies for. You start planning weeks (nay, months) in advance for the holiday, perusing Pinterest boards and selling items through your Etsy shop to raise funds for your endeavor.

Eventually, you decide on a costume. Mother Goose. Hermione Granger. Martha Stewart as Medusa. Each of these options speaks to your true self, the one you feel aligned with during the Halloween season. After knitting your entire outfit and making a few dozen cookies for your friends, you still have some time to spare. So you make another costume. Just in case.

4. The Couples Costume

It’s no surprise that you and your significant other are attached at the hip: You’re veritably obsessed with each other! No matter what party you end up at on Halloween, it’s a good bet that you and your SO will be matching in totally awesome costumes.

The obvious choice is to be Beyoncé and Jay Z à la their “On the Run” tour. Or, wait, a better option may be Kim and Kanye. Don’t like the idea of dressing as celebrities? No problem. Matching costumes are just as cute. How about dressing up as Mickey and Minnie Mouse? Adorable!

Whatever you decide, everyone you run into will know that you and your SO are a C-O-U-P-L-E, and you don’t care who knows it. Even if matching costumes are kind of a punch in the face to your single friends, you don’t care. You and bae look super cute. Plus, there’s a fantastic Facebook profile pic in the works with a couple costume. Just wait; come November first, the likes will start rolling in.

5. The Punny Costume

You’re probably an English major, and you think that playing with words is basically the most hilarious thing ever. You’ll dress up as a “cereal killer” by splashing red paint across a Cheerios box and sticking it to your front, or you’ll cover your body in sponges, claiming to be “self-absorbed.” People usually don’t get your punny costume unless you explain it to them first, but that’s okay. It allows you the chance to show your intellectual superiority and wit.

You’ll go to a party for a total of 45 minutes before growing increasingly annoyed with the silly drunk kids running around like idiots, so after sipping on a glass of white wine at some guy’s cousin’s pregame, you’ll go home to read a book.

6. The Disney Princess

It’s a category all on its own because of its prevalence across college campuses all over the country. Collegiettes love dressing up as princesses (because we basically are royalty… right?), and those of the Disney variety are the crème de la crème.

If you dress up as Cinderella, Pocahontas or Belle, you’re probably an elementary ed major who is having a really hard time letting go of your childhood. Instead of pregaming, you’ll be microwaving chicken nuggets (you’re too scared to use a stove) and sipping on a Capri Sun. Your favorite dance songs are from musicals, obviously, and you count the dolls on your bed among your bestest of friends. You do you, girlfriend – as long as you’re in bed by midnight when the princess magic runs out.

7. The Black Cat

Chances are you’ll see approximately a million pointy-eared felines prowling Halloween parties across campus come October 31. And why shouldn’t you? Black cats strike the perfect balance between kinda eerie and super cute. If a kitty-cat is your purr-fect costume, then you probably like to play it safe when it comes to dressing up. It’s a costume that people are used to seeing, it doesn’t have much of a shock factor and it can be dressed up all sexayyy if you so choose.

You feel like you’re participating in Halloween mostly because, well, it’s what you do in college, isn’t it? Your hesitancy shows through the lack of originality in your outfit choice. While your roomies have been planning their extravagant ensembles since before the semester even started, you started digging through your closet on October 30th, hoping to come across a black dress that you could add ears and whiskers to. It’s okay that you aren’t super stoked about Halloween; just give it a chance and you may find that it’s, like, the best holiday ever. (For what you’ll morph into for next year, refer to #3.)

8. The Legitimately Scary Costume

Your idea of a perfect Halloween costume? Something bloody, gory and actually terrifying. You laugh in the face of those who have commercialized a day meant to inspire fear in the hearts of people everywhere, and you’re doing your part to bring the holiday back to its intended purpose.

You listen to Evanescence unironically, count American Horror Story as one of your favorite TV shows and read Gothic fiction for fun. These sources of inspiration lead you to dress up as a bloody undertaker or mass murderer. You think dressing as Charles Manson is totally appropriate and doesn’t cross any boundaries whatsoever. You also kill insects for fun.

What are you dressing up as for Halloween this year, collegiettes? Did we nail down what your costume says about the true you? Let us know in the comments below!

9 Interview Mistakes & How to Recover From Them

$

There are few experiences more anxiety inducing than the dreaded interview, save final exams or your SO calling to say the two of you “need to talk.” Unfortunately, it’s impossible to get a job, an internship or even admittance into grad school until you can convince an interviewer that you’re qualified.

It’s a high-pressure situation, and no matter how much we prepare for it, something problematic could happen. Because we’re already on edge, we may slip up and flub a question or forget something important. Fortunately, it’s possible to get back on track. HC talked to expert interview coach Barry Drexler to find out how to recover from common interview mistakes.

1. You arrive late.

Maybe there was an accident on the expressway or you rolled out of bed much later than you had planned—either way, you finally make it to your interview. Fifteen minutes late.

“The best thing to do is to be as honest as possible and just own it,” Drexler says. Acknowledge your mistake and apologize for it. Explain your reasoning where applicable. If you were late due to circumstances out of your control (such as traffic or a major accident), then let the interviewer know.

If you’re running late and you know the interviewer’s phone number, it’s a good idea to give him or her a call ahead of time. If you don’t have his or her contact information, you’ll have to deal with the situation after you arrive.

You’re going to want to take a moment before entering the interview space to gather yourself. “You’re going to lose your composure, because you’ll be really uptight about being late,” Drexler says. “You have to, as much as possible, put it behind you.” Dip into the ladies’ room to fix yourself up, or take a few deep breaths just outside the door to get yourself under control.

What to do: Say, “I’m very sorry I was late; there was an accident on the expressway and it slowed me down. It’s not typical of me.” Then move on.

2. You forget the interviewer’s name or call him or her by the wrong one.

A slip of the tongue, a momentary lapse in memory — hey, it happens.

According to Drexler, this happens a lot, so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Be apologetic, but don’t keep saying you’re sorry over and over again. “In other words, don’t give it life,” he says. “You want to get the interviewer off that topic. If you keep talking about it, you’re giving it life when you don’t need to.”

What to do: Say, “Oops, sorry about that!” and steer the conversation away from the incident.

3. Your phone rings.

It’s your worst nightmare: You could have sworn you put your phone on silent, but for some reason Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” is now blaring from your purse.

While you may want to ignore it until it goes away, that’s not the best thing to do. “You want to be honest; you just made a mistake,” Drexler says. “You want to show respect.” Don’t let it continue to ring while the interviewer is talking.

If your phone goes off in the middle of the interview, apologize and turn it off. Don’t put it on silent, but power it down; it’s your safest bet against any more accidental interruptions.

What to do: Say, “I’m so sorry, I thought I put my phone on silent.” Then turn it off, put it in your bag and leave it there.

4. You say something negative.

Frazzled nerves can mess with our filters, and sometimes we say things we never would have voiced aloud otherwise.

Maybe you catch yourself telling a questionable joke, or a dig at your ex-boss slips out when talking about your previous work experiences. As always, you need to address your mistake and make amends.

If you catch yourself being less than positive, Drexler offers a way to turn it into a good thing. “If you look at their expression and you’re getting a sense that you just said something wrong, then it’s a good opportunity to demonstrate self-awareness,” he says. It’s always better to catch yourself than to have your interviewer tell you that you’re being rude. If you’re unsure, Drexler suggests reading the interviewer for signals (narrowed eyes, sudden body tension) that you may have said something off-color.

Once you’ve caught yourself, turn the negative into a positive. For example, if you find yourself speaking badly about your former employer, halt in your tracks and begin elaborating on some of the skills that you learned at that job.

What to do: Say, “I just realized I made a rude joke/spoke negatively about my prior employer. To be honest, I really learned a lot from him/her, such as...”

5. You miss a question because you weren’t paying attention.

Maybe you’re mortified about that rude joke you just made or you still can’t get over the fact that you were late. Whatever the case may be, you suddenly notice the interviewer is staring at you expectantly, and you have no idea what he or she just said.

While the situation may appear awkward in the worst way, Drexler offers a pretty simple fix. “This is where you would simply say, ‘Well, I was just thinking about the prior question.’ That’s a good reply to something like that,” he says. However, remember to stay in the moment from here forward. During your interview, you shouldn’t be thinking about anything else!

What to do: Say, “Oh, I was just thinking about something you said,” and ask him or her to repeat the question.

6. You forget to bring a list of references.

Like slipping up on someone’s name, forgetting to bring your reference list happens quite often as well. Don’t dwell on this one, either; admit that you forgot and take action to correct the mistake.

“Be very matter-of-fact,” Drexler says. “You have to demonstrate an attitude that shows you’re not beating yourself up in front of them.” Tell the interviewer that you will send your references by the end of the day.

What to do: Say, “Oh! My apologies. I will absolutely send them to you by the end of today.”

7. You’re asked to explain an unfamiliar part of your resume.

Drexler works with clients specifically to train them so they don’t make this mistake. “It happens because people do their resumes, and they don’t even bother to look at them,” he says.

This is why you should never have anyone else do your resume for you. Anything on your resume is fair game, so you need to know it like the back of your hand. Still, maybe the point in question was an internship from high school, or a section near the bottom you didn’t think to look over.

“Don’t dwell on what you don’t know,” Drexler suggests. Don’t say that you don’t know or aren’t sure. Do your best to remember what you can about the item and expand on it as much as possible.

What to do: Say, “Well, that was quite a while ago, but what I do know about that situation is…”

8. You’re asked a question you weren’t prepared for.

“What do you think about our company’s recent adoption of open office spaces?” You didn’t check the headlines; you were too busy practicing for this interview!

Unfortunately, you’re not going to be prepared for every question you get. Drexler says, “This is where you have to think on your feet. What is it the person wants to hear when they’re asking me this question?”

He continues, “If you don’t have any clue, you still need to say something.” You may be nervous, but don’t just blurt out any answer. It’s totally okay to take a second to consider the question before you respond. Think about the overall premise of the question, and try to figure out what’s behind it. Say something like, “that’s a great question” to give yourself a bit more time if you need to.

What to do: Say, “That’s a great question. I think open office spaces are a great way to cultivate teamwork and a friendly environment…”

9. You give a less-than-ideal answer.

In an effort to give the right answer, you may accidentally give the wrong one.

Rachael David, a junior at Penn State, had this happen when she was interviewing for her current internship. “She simply asked me on a scale of 1-10 how much I wanted the job, and in fear of appearing too eager, I responded with an eight,” she says.

If you’re still in the interview, don’t be afraid to amend points you think you didn’t answer as well as you could have. If the interview is over, you may still have the chance to fix this mistake. “If you think there were one or two questions you didn’t answer very well, then you want to address that in a thank-you note, briefly,” Drexler says. “You want your note to be constructive and positive.”

Rachael found this solution worked for her. “Immediately when I left the interview, I knew I had made a horrible mistake and was sure to email her as soon as I could, both thanking her for the interview and explaining my mistake,” she says. “I told her that my desire for the job was a solid 10 and apologized for any confusion. She responded back saying how glad she was that I had changed my mind, and I was notified that I got the job a few weeks later.”

It is possible to recover and still get the job. As stated, address the mistake (and correct it!) in a follow-up thank-you email. Keep it brief — no need to overly elaborate.

What to do: Say, “I know you asked me about X, and I want you to know these are my thoughts about that point…”

Interviews can be a stressful ordeal, but Drexler encourages us to remember what they’re for. An interview is all about selling yourself: showing the interviewer that you have the knowledge, skills and experience that he or she wants. In order to do this, Drexler insists that you stay focused. “You have to drop everything else from your mind and stay present, and that ‘everything’ includes the mistake you just made,” he says.

If you make a mistake, own up to it and then give it a positive spin! Giving a silver lining to your mistakes can help demonstrate your accountability, your self-awareness and your ability to not sweat the small stuff. Use those unfortunate mishaps to convince your interviewer you’re qualified for the position!

Cat lovers, rejoice! Today is National Cat Day, and in honor of the most purr-fect holiday ever invented (and because kitties have taken the fashion world by storm—we're looking at you, Choupette!), we wanted to show you how to rock some of our favorite cat-inspired styles. Whether you're the proud owner of a kitty of your own or you just happen to be obsessed (guilty!), here are seven pieces to help you show off your feline fascination.

1. Cozy sweater

Perfect for staying cozy during fall and winter days, this Meow Graphic Sweater ($24.90 at Forever 21) is sassy but still subtle enough to wear to class. Pair it with a slouchy beanie for an effortless vibe, or add dark skinnies and boots for a more sophisticated look.

2. Funky flats

Cats and stripes are two of our favorite things, so we fell head over heels for these Up Your Alley Cat Flat in Stripes ($59.99 at ModCloth). All you need are some black tights and a wool coat and you're good to go (and looking very Jessica Day!).

3. Tank

Spruce up your standard crop top with a flirty message, like this Meow Whiskers Tank ($19.90 at Delia*s). This would look positively purr-fect with a bodycon skirt for a night out or underneath an unbuttoned flannel for the day.

4. Stackable rings

For the girl who loves cats but wants something a little more subtle and sophisticated, the Lovecats ring ($32 at Catbird) is exactly what you're looking for. It's delicate and simple, so you can go for a minimalist look by wearing it on its own—or stack it with tons of gold bands for something that's a little more glamorous.

5. Bold bodycon

A black bodycon dress is a staple for every collegiette, but this Ana Cat Face Bodycon Dress ($20 at boohoo) adds a little something special to the standard. We love the simple white cat face, especially paired with the long sleeves. We would rock this all autumn/winter long, and if you're looking for a low-maintenance Halloween costume, this would definitely do the trick.

6. Trendy tights

Meow is right! If you love the look of thigh-highs but hate tugging them up, these LOVEsick Cat Garter Tights ($10 at Hot Topic) are the perfect solution. Basic black tights are boring but this frisky pair, worn with a casual skirt and sweater or shift dress, is perfect for adding a feline flair to your outfit.

7. Pretty peplum

We may or may not be completely obsessed with this ASOS Shift Dress in Scuba in Cat Print with Peplum Hem ($72.01 at ASOS)... just look at it! Not only is the lilac color gorgeous, but the kittens on it are just adorable. The color may be a bit more spring/summer, but if you pair it with tights (though probably not the cat tights...) and a black or grey cardigan, it would be perfect for the cooler months.

Besides posting one too many pics of our kitties on Instagram, we plan on spending National Cat Day scooping up some of these amazing feline finds. How are you planning on spending the day, cat-loving collegiettes? Meow!

13 Halloween-Inspired Manicure Ideas

With Halloween creeping up (pun intended) around the corner, we’re ready to get into the spooky spirit! While wearing an actual costume is only socially acceptable on the actual day of October 31st, giving yourself a Halloween-inspired manicure is an easy way to celebrate early without looking ridiculous. Here are a bunch of ideas for your Halloween manicure for every nail-art skill level. And don’t worry; they aren’t the typical yellow, white and orange stripes (candy corn nails… groundbreaking).

Tip: Use a base coat for all of these designs so you don’t stain your nails. Also, always use a top coat to seal in your pretty designs and make it chip-resistant for a longer period of time.

1. Plain orange

For the busy girl: one color, no fancy designs and no hassle.

Level of difficulty: Easy

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

Just apply two coats of the orange polish to your fingers for a quick mani. If you want make the color of the orange really pop, start by adding a single coat of white nail polish and let it dry before applying the orange. The white base coat acts as a real “blank canvas” for the orange, so the color comes out truer to the color it is in the bottle. Even if you used your only free 15 minutes of the week to do this, you’ll be super happy whenever you look down at your bright orange nails!

2. Faux claws

For the girl who wants to be fierce every day.

Level of difficulty: Easy

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Put on one coat of the tan nail polish, making sure to keep this layer smooth and even.
  • Once the tan is 100 percent dry, tape off the end of your nails with two pieces of Scotch tape.
  • Place the tape diagonally to form a point that meets at the very tip of your nail, and smooth out any bumps or air bubbles.
  • Apply two coats of the black nail polish onto the uncovered parts of your nails, being careful to not let any color get underneath the tape.
  • When the black is dry, slowly peel back the tape, making sure to not pull off any color from your nails.
  • Your cat will have a new level of respect for you after seeing your “claws.”

3. Orange French

For the subtle Halloween enthusiast.

Level of difficulty: Easy

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Place a piece of tape on each of your nails, leaving a small space at the tips for the orange polish.
  • The top edge of the tape should be where you want the orange to end.
  • Make sure the tape is smoothed down completely before you paint your tips, and then paint the space above the tape with the orange nail polish.
  • Once the orange has dried, carefully remove the tape and apply a thin coat of the sheer polish to your entire nail.
  • You don’t want to alter the color of your tips too much with this color; that’s why you’ll want to use a thin coat here as opposed to a thicker one.
  • Never has your subtle enthusiasm for a holiday looked so good!

4. Ghosts

For all of us who watch Ghost Hunters and swear it’s not staged.

Level of difficulty: Medium

What you’ll need:

  • White nail polish
  • Black nail polish
  • A toothpick

Instructions:

  • Apply two coats of white nail polish and let it dry completely.
  • Dip your toothpick in the bottle of black nail polish about a centimeter deep, just enough to get some color (but not so much that it’ll be dripping everywhere).
  • Make two dots toward the bottom of your nails for the ghost’s eyes.
  • For the ghost’s mouth, make six or seven dots really close together.
  • Lightly run the toothpick over the mouth dots to blend them together and create one large blob.
  • The next time someone says ghosts aren’t real, just flash them your cute manicure.

5. Spooky Eyes

For those girls who enjoy people watching out of their dorm-room window or Facebook stalking.

Level of difficulty: Medium

What you’ll need:

  • Black nail polish
  • White nail polish
  • 2 toothpicks

Instructions:

  • Paint your nails with two coats of the black polish and let them dry fully.
  • Take one of the toothpicks and dip it in the white polish.
  • Make two medium-sized dots on your nail for the eyes, and let those dry completely as well.
  • Once the white is dry, dip the second toothpick in the black and make small dots inside the larger white dots for pupils.
  • Now you won’t have to feel so alone when you’re two years deep into someone’s Facebook profile at 3 a.m.

6. Stitched French

For the classic girl with a little bit of an edgy side.

Level of difficulty: Medium

What you’ll need:

  • Orange nail polish
  • Sheer pink or nude nail polish
  • Black nail polish
  • Scotch tape
  • A toothpick

Instructions:

  • Follow the instructions for the Orange French (see number three on this list).
  • Wait until the sheer polish is dry before painting on the stiches.
  • Get some of the black nail polish on the end of your toothpick and draw a line horizontally across the bottom of the orange tip.
  • Add five or six smaller lines perpendicular to that one to create the look of stitches.
  • Everyone from the classic prepsters to the trendy hipsters will be staring at your mani.

7. Blood Drips

For the girls who have always been, and will always be, Team Edward (or for those who can't decide which Salvatore brother is hotter).

Level of difficulty: Medium

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Paint all your nails with the red polish except for your ring fingers.
  • On your ring fingers, start the design by painting red around your cuticles.
  • If you get nail polish all over your fingers during this step (we’ve all been there), you can go back later with a cotton swab and some nail polish remover.
  • While the red by your cuticles is still wet, take your toothpick dipped in the polish and make 3 dots at various heights across your nail.
  • Going back in with more of the red nail polish on the toothpick, make squiggly lines from the dots to the red base.
  • While this is still pretty wet, take some more red polish on your toothpick and make the lines that connect your dots to the base look more gradual by making them thicker by the bottom and thinning out at the top.
  • You want to make all alterations to your design while the nail polish is still wet to make it easier to blend together and look more uniform.
  • Edward Cullen would definitely approve.

8. Candy Buttons

For the girl who wants to have her candy but maybe not eat it, too.

Level of difficulty: Medium

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Paint all of your nails white to start off and let them dry completely before starting the design.
  • Take a toothpick with some turquoise nail polish on it and make two rows of dots going across your nail.
  • You can do this diagonally (like in the picture) or going horizontally across your nails—whichever one you like better!
  • Next, take the yellow nail polish and a fresh toothpick and do the same thing. Follow this with the pink nail polish.
  • The tricky part about this design is trying to get all the dots to be the same size and also making sure that they are evenly spaced and going in straight lines.
  • If the lines start going crooked or the dots are all different sizes, you could lose the look of candy buttons and start moving towards the direction of just regular ole polka dots.

9. Skeletons

For all of us who went through that phase is middle school when we were obsessed with Hot Topic and boys in skinny jeans.

Level of difficulty: Hard

What you’ll need:

  • White nail polish
  • Black nail polish
  • A toothpick

Instructions:

  • Start off by painting all your nails white and letting them dry.
  • For the actual skull face, begin by making the eyes.
  • Get some black nail polish on the toothpick and make two medium-sized dots about a third of the way up from the bottom.
  • These dots should be close to the sides of your nails (make sure there is enough room in between them for the nose dots).
  • For the nose, make two small black dots in between the eyes, but a little higher up.
  • For the mouth of the skull, start by making a black line about from the middle of the top of your nail about a third of the way down.
  • Make two mirroring lines on either side of the initial line.
  • Finally, to define the shape of the skull’s chin, make a triangle on either side of the black lines you just made.
  • These triangles should start at the bottom of your nail and go about as far down as the three black lines.
  • After the triangles are drawn in, make the inside edge of it a little curved so it mimics the shape of a face instead of just having straight lines.
  • Middle-school you would be raving over your mani if she could see it.

10. Nontraditional candy corn

For the girl who read the first paragraph of this article and was sad to see that the striped candy-corn nail would be missing.

Level of difficulty: Hard

What you’ll need:

  • White nail polish
  • Yellow nail polish
  • Orange nail polish
  • Scotch tape
  • A toothpick

Instructions:

  • Paint your nails white and let them dry all the way.
  • Using the Scotch tape, tape off about two-thirds of the way up your nails.
  • Below the tape, paint your nails with the yellow nail polish.
  • Make sure there are no air bubbles under the tape before doing this.
  • Once the yellow has dried, carefully remove the tape.
  • Using your toothpick, make a lot of small dots that are concentrated where the white and yellow polish meet.
  • Continue making small dots up and down your nail, letting their saturation fade as they get further from the white/yellow division line.
  • See? How much cuter is this than three boring stripes?

11. Glittery Black French

Perfect for the glitzy Halloween partygoer.

Level of difficulty: Hard

What you’ll need:

  • Black nail polish
  • Sheer pink or nude nail polish
  • Orange glitter nail polish
  • Scotch tape

Instructions:

  • Follow the instructions in for the Orange French (number three on this list), except instead of using orange nail polish, use black.
  • Once your French has dried, you can begin to add the glitter.
  • To paint the top of your nails, don’t wipe the excess off the brush on the inside of the bottle.
  • Take the polish-covered brush, turn it so it’s on its side and dab on the glitter over the black on your tips.
  • Repeat this as many times you want to, depending on how thick you want the glitter.
  • Go down the rest of your nail with the glitter, dabbing like you did for the top.
  • Make sure to fade out the amount of glitter you’re applying to create an ombré effect.
  • Don’t be surprised when people at your Halloween party are paying more attention to your nails than to your costume.

12. Jack-o’-Lanterns

For the girl who loves the real thing, but hates the pumpkin guts.

Level of difficulty: Hard

What you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Paint your nails with two coats of the orange nail polish.
  • On top of the orange, add one coat of the glitter nail polish to give the jack-o’-lanterns some depth.
  • With the toothpick and black nail polish, carefully draw little faces onto your nails.
  • You can look online for some inspiration if you’re having a hard time deciding what types of faces to draw.
  • You don’t have to limit yourself to the traditional jack-o’-lantern faces; people get crazy when they carve their pumpkins, so why not go a little crazy with your nails as well?
  • When you’re done, you’ll have 10 little jack-o’-lanterns with you wherever you go!

13. Spiders

For girls who are deathly afraid of spiders, have no fear! These spiders are too cute to be afraid of.

Level of difficulty: Hard

What you’ll need:

  • Orange nail polish
  • Black nail polish
  • White nail polish
  • 2 toothpicks

Instructions:

  • Start off by painting all of your nails orange and allowing them to dry.
  • Next, go in with some black nail polish on your toothpick and make medium-sized dots in the middle of each of your nails to make the bodies of the spiders.
  • Add little L shapes to either side of the bodies for legs and one straight line connecting the body to the top of your nail by the cuticle for a web.
  • Allow the black polish to dry.
  • Go in next with the white nail polish on a new toothpick and make five dots on each of your nails: three on the orange part of your nail for background decoration, and two toward the tops of the spider bodies for eyes.
  • Once the white polish has dried, make two small black dots in the centers of the two white eye dots to add more detail to the eyes and to make the spiders look super cute and friendly.
  • You might even forget about your fear of spiders because of how harmless the ones on your nails look.

5 Last-Minute Beauty Looks That Will Transform Any Halloween Costume

When it comes to planning the perfect Halloween outfit, we couldn’t be more excited (for what other than the IG-worthy selfies to be snapped?). But often, our costume-finding efforts fall to wayside. Luckily, for the procrastinators and lazy alike, there is makeup to transform any haphazard costume from drab to fab. If wearing a pair of cat ears is your idea of a costume, it’s time you upped your trick-or-treat game. Curious? Keep scrolling to see how!

1. Leopard Lids

Make a fierce feline costume out of your favorite LBD with a leopard-inspired eyeshadow look that even the most uninitiated collegiette can recreate. First, swipe a copper eyeshadow (bronze or gold will work too) all over your lid. Extend the color slightly beyond the eyes toward your temples and under your lower lash line. Next, define the crease with a darker shade of bronze. Complete the look by adding four to five dots on your outer crease with a black kohl eyeliner or stick (we recommend NYX’s Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean) and smudge the spots using a clean finger.

2. Ombré Lips

Go ombré or go home—we’re gushing over these futuristic and gilded pouts created with vegan artistry line Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ lip tars. Click here for recipes and step-by-step directions to achieving these vibrant, dual-toned lips from OCC’s founder David Klasfeld. This goes with any costume—something scary and vampy or bright and fun.

3. Color Mascara

For collegiettes who haven’t mastered the cat-eye yet (darn you, unsteady hand) and aren’t willing to go through a handful of Q-tips to get it right on the night of Halloween, color mascara is for you. Hard Candy’s 1,000 Lashes Fiber Mascara ($6) comes in seven eye-popping shades. Use a different color on your top and bottom lashes for an electrifying effect.

4. Temporary Lip Tattoos

Temporary lip tattoos by Violent Lips are the procrastinator’s Halloween-beauty holy grail. Spice up any costume by dressing your pucker in leopard, rainbow, polka dots, glitter and a variety of other patterns. Each lip tattoo last four to eight hours. All lip sizes welcome!

5. Dramatic Cat-Eye

Quick and easy, this kitty cat-eye look only calls for three products: black eyeliner, faux lashes and black lipstick (we love Limecrime’s liquid-to-matte Lipstick in Black Velvet, $20). Add a pair of ears and you’re ready to go!
