The 10 Best Halloween Costumes of 2014

$

0

2014 has been quite an eventful year for newsworthy pop culture moments. From Ariana Grande's supposed diva antics to Kim and Kanye's over-the-top wedding, there were plenty of great moments of inspiration for our of-the-moment Halloween costumes. We've rounded up our 11 favorite costumes for 2014 so you can be on trend and pop-culture savvy all Halloweekend long!

1. The ice bucket challenge

The social media trend of the year is actually super easy to recreate on your own. All you need is a bucket labeled "ICE" and some silver tinsel attached to the rim. Add in some silver balloons as "ice cubes" and hold the bucket over your head. Bonus points if you can convince people to donate to the cause!

2. Divergent

This year's Peeta and Katniss had sci-fi fashion down to a science, and we can't wait to recreate Tris's kickass look. All you'll need is a pair of black jeans, some black boots and a black top complete with faux-leather detailing. Throw your hair up into a pony to finish it off.

3. Beyoncé

This was the year of Queen Bey, and her VMAs performance was legendary. To recreate Bey's look, all you need is some fishnet stockings and a leotard you've bedazzled with colorful fake gems. Top it off with some voluminous hair and crazy confidence, and you're good to go!

4. Frozen

We still have "Let It Go" stuck in our heads, so a Frozen costume is perfect. For Anna, rock a dark maxi dress with a cropped pink shawl. Dye one section of your hair white with temporary dye, braid your hair into two braids and finish the look off with some drawn-on freckles. For Ice Queen Elsa, you need an icy-blue maxi dress and a blonde wig braided into a single loose French braid. A purple smokey eye will complete the look.

5. Iggy Azalea

This blonde bombshell made waves on this side of the pond with her single "Fancy," and we fell in love with her sound and style. All you need for Iggy's look is a long, pin-straight blonde wig and crazy-bright pink lipstick. Pair high-waisted shorts or pants with a matching crop top, preferably in neon colors or a bright pattern. You're lookin' fancy!

6. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande has had an amazing year, and her style makes a perfect Halloween costume. Pick out a girly skater-style dress or skirt and pair it with heels to nail the outfit. Create Ariana's signature hair by styling a half-updo and curling all of your hair. Finish the look off with some winged liner.

7. Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and their daughter

While we're slightly depressed that Ryan Gosling is off the market, we can't wait to see his adorable daughter with the gorgeous Eva Mendes. Recruit your boyfriend or a guy friend to be the well-tailored Ryan Gosling and rock your favorite ladylike frock to embody Eva's eternal classiness. Tote around an infant doll to finish off the happy trio!

8. Pharrell and his hat

Pharrell's Smokey-Bear-inspired hat made waves this year, and it might be the simplest costume yet. All you need is a red-and-white striped tracksuit and a huge (and we mean huge) hat. Done!

9. Kendall & Kylie

2014 was the year that Kendall and Kylie and surpassed the other Kardashian sisters as the most pop-culture prominent. For your Kendall costume, part your hair down the middle and straighten it.  Rock a pair of high-waisted dark jeans and pumps paired with a cropped halter top to finish the look. To recreate the youngest Jenner's look, don a slinky white dress and pumps and temporarily dye the tips of your hair blue. Krazy kute!

10. Tinder

To recreate the dating app of the year, all you need is a giant cardborad cutout designed to look like the app! Cut out two squares and walk around with your face in one of the squares. Ask a hottie to take a pic with you to complete the look. Maybe you'll even get some digits!

The Ultimate Pep Talk for Talking to Your Crush

$

0

We get it: There are few things more terrifying than getting up the nerve to talk to your crush. What if he or she is sitting with friends and they start giggling to one another? What if you have food on your face? What if you freeze up and break out in hives?!

But what if none of that happens and it ends up being the start of something amazing?

Collegiettes, there are only a finite number of opportunities you will have to interact with that guy or girl you’ve been crushing on since freshman year, so make the most of them! To help you work up the courage to go talk to your crush, Her Campus is here to give you five reasons you need to hurry up and get your flirt on.

1. Your crush might be thinking the same thing

So you’re sitting there in the dining hall, ogling the hottie on the soccer team at the next table over, trying to convince yourself it’s a good idea to go say “hi.” But what if he or she is thinking the very same thing? Contrary to popular belief, not all guys (or girls) are straightforward when it comes to love, and your crush could be feeling just as nervous and vulnerable as you are.

Unless one of you breaks the stalemate, you could be doomed to googly-eye each other around campus until you graduate. Instead, do yourself a favor and ask your crush how classes are going or how the soccer team is doing this season next time you see him or her. Even if your crush isn’t interested in a relationship, you’ll never have to wonder “What if?”

2. You owe it to yourself to try

You’re a beautiful, smart, strong collegiette, and you deserve to pursue the things you want… right? Chances are if you’re avoiding your crush, you’re doing so because you’re insecure about yourself or about how he or she will react. You know Queen Bey would never think that way, so channel your inner Sasha Fierce and realize what a catch you are!

3. Your crush could think you’re not interested

While pop culture might try to convince you otherwise, guys are sensitive, too! If you never speak to your crush and never approach him, how is he even supposed to know you like him? Even if your crush isn’t into you right now, acting completely disinterested definitely won’t help your case.

A crush is unlikely to make the first move unless you show at least some hint of interest, so muster up the courage to flash your best smile or ask your crush about your history reading. We’re definitely not advocating that you profess your love to your crush in the middle of the quad, but subtle hints that you like him or her as more than just a friend are all it takes to send the message.

4. You have nothing to lose

So let’s say you’re at a party and your friends finally convince you to go say hi to that cutie you’ve been crushing on for a year. Let’s say things don’t go quite as you had hoped, and your witty banter and carefree confidence is replaced by stilted awkwardness and stale beer. Not to worry, because you really haven’t lost anything!

Unless you point-blank ask your crush on a date, chances are he or she will just think you’re being friendly at a party! Guys are typically a little slow to pick up on signals from women, so the “really awkward” thing you said probably didn’t even register with him. Interacting with your crush can actually be super low risk, as long as you stick to friendly topics to gauge his interest rather than overly flirty banter. You’ll not only make your crush feel at ease, but you’ll also minimize any potential embarrassment on your end. And, at the very least, you’ll probably gain a great new friend—and who knows, maybe something will happen down the road!

5. It could be the start of something amazing

Ah, the promise of love. At the end of the day, this will probably be the thing that gets you up off your butt and talking to your crush. While many crushes don’t work out for whatever reason, there are tons of relationships that do! In fact, pretty much every single relationship (from Barack and Michelle Obama to your best friend and her SO) started out as just a crush until someone made a move.

Yes, your crush might not be interested. Yes, he or she could “friend zone” you or turn out to be different than you thought, but your crush could also turn out to be even better than you had imagined. Don’t rule out the possibility of happily ever after just because you’re scared of what might happen if you put yourself out there!

Take a deep breath, channel your inner Yoncé and go talk to that hottie you’ve had your eye on; you have nothing to lose! Now get flirting, girl.

The Top 7 Fall TV Shows You Should Know About

$

0

Transitioning into the school year after a fun summer can be brutal. Thankfully, fall has a lot of perks, especially when it comes to TV. Perhaps even more exciting than the release of the Pumpkin Spice Latte is the release of new TV shows!

So while you’re getting back into the swing of the school year, find some time with your girlfriends to watch the best new TV shows. We’ve rounded up the most promising shows that you should watch, so check them out below.

1. Manhattan Love Story

Who’s in it?: Jake McDorman (Greek and Shameless) and Analeigh Tipton (Crazy, Stupid, Love.) star as the new and awkward couple.

The premise:Manhattan Love Story maps out Dana and Peter’s budding relationship, even before it officially starts. Dana is a New York transplant who sees the city through rose-colored glasses, while Jake is a typically smug player. In this clever comedy, you’ll go inside their heads and hear what they’re thinking (sounds like What Women Want).

Why you should watch: This show is hits the same type of sweet spot you felt when you watched Sex and the City. It will make you feel good, and you’ll probably find yourself relating to many of the situations Dana and Peter get themselves into.

When to catch it: Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c

2. How to Get Away with Murder

Who’s in it?: Viola Davis (The Help) is the main star of this drama, while supporting characters include Matt McGorry (Bennett in Orange Is the New Black) and Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas in Harry Potter).

The premise: Davis plays Annalise Keating, a criminal defense attorney and law professor who sure is one tough cookie. Her students revere her, yet fear her at the same time; she’s a complete mystery. A group of students from her class have done something bad —what that is, we’re not sure yet, but we know it has to do with murder, hence, the title (and a series of flashbacks).

Why you should watch: ABC is on a hot streak with its Thank God It’s Thursday campaign, and it’s all thanks to Shonda Rhimes, whose production company is behind this drama-mystery series. With hits like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, Rhimes has yet to create an ABC series that isn't amazing, so we’re anticipating this show will be just as addicting. If you love the suspense of Pretty Little Liars, check out this series.

When to catch it: Thursdays at 10/9c

3. Gotham

Who’s in it?: Benjamin McKenzie still plays a guy who’s tough like Ryan Atwood from TheO.C., but this time, he’s playing Jim Gordon. Jada Pinkett Smith will also play a supporting role.

The premise: In an angle never fully explored before by the Batman film franchise, Gotham follows young Jim Gordon as he climbs the ranks of the Gotham City Police Department and the comic’s most famed villains and heroes, like Penguin, Catwoman and, of course, Batman.

Why you should watch: You don’t have to be a DC Comics fanatic to be interested in Gotham. In fact, it’d be even better if you weren’t, since DC Comic fans already know the entire history of Batman and the other characters. Also, this is one of the first presentations of the famous fictional city where Batman isn’t the center of the universe.

When to catch it: Mondays at 8/7c

4. Selfie

Who’s in it?: Karen Gillan, best known for her role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, plays leading lady Eliza Dooley. John Cho, best known as Harold from the Harold & Kumar franchise, plays self-image guru Henry Higgs.

The premise: In this modern spinoff George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, Eliza Dooley (nope, not Doolittle) is a social-media virtuoso. She has mastered the art of a Twitter hashtag and is an Instagram pro. Her real-world social life, on the other hand, could use some work. That’s where Higgs comes in to help her re-brand herself.

Why you should watch: Underneath its witty one-liners and comical scenes, Selfie actually addresses a relevant topic in today’s age of being glued to your iPhone. If you find yourself over-obsessed with Instagram and Twitter, maybe you could learn a lesson or two from this show. If you were a fan of the sitcom Suburgatory, you’ll be a fan of Selfie, since the two were both created by Emily Kapnek and are bound to share the same overall flavor.

When to catch it: Tuesdays at 8/7c

5. Bad Judge

Who’s in it?: You’re probably used to seeing Kate Walsh in scrubs from when she starred in Private Practice, but this time, she’s decked out in a judge’s robe. Also, expect to see stand-up comedian Tone Bell.

The premise: In this comedy, Walsh plays Rebecca Wright, a tough criminal court judge by day and a totally reckless teenager by night… except not just night, since her inner wild child comes out the second her robe comes off (even if she does so in her office).

Why you should watch: The show was cocreated by Chris Henchy, a founder of the website Funny or Die, and Will Ferrell is an executive producer, so we are 100 percent confident the show will be hysterical. It resembles the movie Bad Teacher, only better.

When to catch it: Thursdays at 9/8c

6. State of Affairs

Who’s in it? Former Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl.

The premise: Heigl plays top CIA analyst Charleston Tucker on this NBC drama. Her job revolves around advising the president on international security. Sounds like a hard job, right? Well that’s not all, of course. Tucker has a muddy past and tangled personal life that we’re sure will get in the way.

Why you should watch: Katherine Heigl has been out of the spotlight for a while, and since this is her re-entry to network television for the first time since Grey’s, she should have a lot to offer. Interestingly enough, critics have likened Heigl’s role to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, so be on the lookout for similarities! If you’re into shows like Scandal or really any political thriller, State of Affairs is a must-see.

When to catch it: Premieres on Monday, Nov. 17 at 10/9c

7. Red Band Society

Who’s in it?: Octavia Spencer (The Help), Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) and Mandy Moore star as the hospital’s main staff of doctors and nurses.

The premise: What's it like to live and practically grow up in a hospital? Red Band Society’s kids know. Through the narration of a boy in a coma, this show invites us into the lives of a group of kids trying to cope with typical teenage crises while staying in the hospital. There will be moments that make you tear up and moments that make you smile from ear to ear.

Why you should watch:Red Band Society has some really great characters that aren't your typical high school classmates, and it reaches beyond just the pity-filled sagas that involve sick kids. If you like Glee but prefer non-musical TV shows, you’ll love Red Band Society. We’re sure the killer cast of doctors and nurses will add a certain sassiness (Ocatvia, girl, we’re looking at you!). Plus, Dave Annable is very easy on the eyes...

When to catch it: Wednesdays at 9/8c

Between studying for that tricky sociology exam and running for student government, collegiettes have almost no free time to shop for Halloween costumes. Don’t worry—we understand that. That’s why we’ve provided a list of the best Halloween costume sites for you to peruse to get inspired for your killer costume (or costumes!) this year.

1. BuyCostumes.com

Coming in at number one on Top 10 Costumes Sites’ list, BuyCostumes.com received A+s across the board for products, prices and shipping. This site can act as your retail Party City at home, but cheaper. It is the largest costume shop on the Internet with literally more than 10,000 costumes for you to choose from. We’re special fans of the animal suits and the superheroes. Not only are its costume prices reasonable at 10-30 percent off of retail value, but its shipping prices are also just as sensible. If you spend $75—which you and your roommates could easily do—you get free shipping. Before placing an order, make sure to check up on store specials to save some money!

2. CostumeSuperCenter.com

CostumeSuperCenter.com prides itself for its variety of costume selection at low prices. Most costumes you find here will be marked down at least 20 percent from retail prices with no catch or special code needed. We also love their same-day shipping policy: As long as you submit your order by 3 p.m., you are guaranteed shipping on the same day! Check out their cute selection of 1920’s-inspired outfits. Party at Gatsby’s, anyone?

3. Frank Bee Costume Center

If you’re in New York, pop your head into Frank Bee Costume Center’s store. If you’re not in New York, its website provides a wide variety with thousands of costumes to choose from. Top 10 Costumes Sites says that the quality of Frank Bee’s cannot be surpassed. Between that and the great service Top 10 Costumes Sites mentions, Frank Bee Costume Center made our list. This site received an A for shipping because of its $8 UPS flat rate, no matter how big or how small your order is. We’re certainly feelin’ this Lady Gaga costume!

4. Costume Kingdom

Although Costume Kingdom was 10th on Top 10 Costumes Sites’ list, it made our top five because of its unique costumes. It offers “many costumes not found elsewhere,” said Top 10 Costumes Sites. Most of its products are fairly priced, while others are at even more discounted prices. Still, all costumes are marked down from their original retail prices. That’s always good news for collegiettes! We’re also loving their Disney costumes. What more could you want?

What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do With Your Life

“So… what are you going to do with that major?”

It’s the question that that you may not have an answer to, because you may not have totally clear plans for your future yet. Even though talking about your potential career should be exciting, it can also be a source of anxiety when you really have no clue what you want to do.

Every collegiette has questioned her future career plans at least once throughout college. But fret not, undecided collegiettes! Her Campus asked the experts why it’s okay to question your post-college plans and how to find a career path that you love so you can confidently answer when someone asks, “What are you going to do with that?”

Why it’s okay to be undecided

Let’s face it: You may not even know what you’re having for breakfast tomorrow, so how can you expect to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life? College is a time to discover your passions, so don’t be freaked out if you don’t have all the answers just yet. First and foremost, here are some reasons why it’s totally okay to be undecided.

You may have an ambiguous major

In most cases, if you study engineering, you’re likely to become an engineer. If you’re in the nursing school, odds are you’ll end up as a nurse someday. But what if your major doesn’t have an “obvious” career path? What should you do if you love what you’re studying, but you’re not quite sure how it translates into a job?

The collegiettes who most often get the, “What are you going to do with that?” question are the ones studying subjects with more ambiguous career paths, like humanities, English or communications. “Many liberal arts majors, like psychology or sociology, could lead to many different careers,” saysNayelli Perez, career counselor and assistant director of Hofstra University’s Career Center. “That could be a blessing and a curse, because it gives students options but also makes it hard for students to see how their major connects to their future career.”

Just because you might not have a definite career path based on your major doesn’t mean you should switch majors! Oftentimes, these “ambiguous” majors can give you invaluable skills that will help you in any career.

“A liberal arts education can prepare you for a broad range of careers — consulting, marketing, banking, publishing, public relations, etc.,” says Lesley Mitler, president of Priority Candidates, Inc., an organization that provides career coaching to college students and recent grads. “These majors bring certain skills that are desirable in [students’] long-term career advancement — research, critical thinking, analytical reasoning and communication.”

Your major might not have a clear career path, so it’s okay that you’re undecided. Consider your major versatile instead of ambiguous. You may not have a set career path like other fields of study, but you can pursue a ton of different opportunities someday!

You’ll probably change your mind

When you were little, all you wanted to do was become a doctor, a writer or maybe a lawyer. As soon as you got to college, you declared a major that would help you achieve those dreams, only to find out that you absolutely hated the subject after the first few weeks. Now what?

Whether you find yourself not liking your current major or you stumble upon a completely new passion that you may want to pursue, don’t freak out! It’s completely normal to change your mind as you’re exposed to new topics and fields.

Megan Shuffleton, a junior at Emerson College, entered school as a media studies major, which she considers her version of undeclared.  “I chose media studies because it seemed vague and I thought it might be a way to explore a few areas before deciding on anything,” she says. “I changed my major after one week of classes. I didn’t like the department I was in and [switched to marketing]. Don’t worry, so many students switch their majors and change their minds and end up where they want to be!”

Similarly, Elodie Jean-Philippe, a junior at Duke University, changed her mind a couple times about her major and future career plans. “I was never truly undecided, but there was a period of time when I dropped my pre-med and biology and was figuring out what to do,” she says. “It was scary, but I knew it was going to be okay.”

After visiting the career center, Elodie decided on a political science major. “At the time, I was addicted to anything political, but I realized I knew nothing about it, so I went ahead with the major,” she says. “I added two certificates to learn more about markets and economics, and [now I’m interested in] consulting for politics!”

You might even pull a 180, like Rachel Cisto, a senior at the University of Hartford. “My coworkers at the Student Television Network like to laugh about how I got to where I am now,” Rachel says. “I came in as a physics major and joined the TV station because it looked like fun, and I ended up switching my major to journalism because of it!”

College is a time to take a variety of classes and learn a bunch of different things. So instead of being freaked out by being undecided or changing your mind, use it as an opportunity to explore your interests — and have confidence that you’ll find what you love eventually!

Ways to find a career path

So you have an idea of the possible careers you can pursue with your major — now it’s time to narrow it down. There are countless opportunities to discover a possible career path and tons of available resources to guide you. Keep these tips in mind and you should gain a better understanding of what you want to do someday.

Do some research

Something you can do on your own as a first step is researching what possible careers your major could lead to. “An easy way to do this on your own is to go to linkedin.com/alumni,” Perez suggests. “Search for [your school’s] alumni by major to get an idea of what, for example, psychology majors have gone on to do.”

The LinkedIn alumni tool allows you to search alumni by what they studied and find out their current jobs as well as where they currently live. There’s also a feature that allows you to determine the requirements for certain jobs. So, if you find a job you’re interested in, you can add a minor or another major if you need to in order to pursue that field after college.

Another way to do research is to talk to someone with a job! The best way to find out if you’ll like a career is to ask people who are actually working in your desired field. “Speak to people who are doing jobs that you think you might be interested in,” Mitler says. “Attend career fairs and information sessions, and talk to a company representative to find out what certain jobs entail.”

You can also use the LinkedIn alumni tool to connect with professionals for this purpose. By doing some basic research, you may find that you can narrow down your career path by just knowing some of the options out there!

Visit your school’s career center

After you do some research, you should consider visiting your career center. Besides editing your resume or helping you write a cover letter, the counselors there can guide you through the career decision process.

“The people I talked to [in the career center] really helped,” Elodie says. “They asked me a lot of random questions, like what TV shows I watch, to help narrow it down. That’s how I got interested in political science!”

Perez suggests asking if you can take a career assessment test at the career center. “When it comes to students I see for career assessments, some of them are students that are undeclared and some are students that have a major but don't know what to do with it,” she says. “I would recommend that students that fall in the latter category definitely meet with a career counselor on campus to go over resources they can use to explore some career options based on their interests.”

Your career center is a great resource to narrow down your career path options; it’s literally what it’s there for! By talking to a career counselor, you may discover a possible career path you never even considered before.

Apply for an internship

Once you decide you’re interested in specific careers, try to get an internship in those fields. Real-world experience will help you decide if you can actually see yourself in that career someday.

“I explored my publishing interests by acquiring an editorial internship, which allowed me to explore the magazine industry,” Megan says. “And at the beginning of this semester, I acquired a public relations internship. These internships have really secured my interests and helped me gather an even better idea of what I might want to do in the future.”

Websites like Internships.com and CollegeRecruiter.com can be good places to start finding internships in your desired field. You can also ask a counselor at your career center if they have any databases for internships.

Beyond that, reach out to alumni again or use your LinkedIn connections to see if there are any opportunities you’re interested in. Beyond using the LinkedIn alumni tool, your career center probably keeps a record of alumni, which could be a good resource for finding connections for internships.

Internships are great because they give you hands-on experience in the working world, and you can determine what you like (and don’t like) pretty quickly. Whether you do an internship over the summer or during the school year, try out different types of internships to narrow down your career search.

Whether you have no idea what careers your major may lead to or you’ve changed your mind about your dream job, it’s okay to be unsure of what you want to do with your life after college. Don’t freak out; use your college’s career resources and explore your interests inside and outside of the classroom. In no time, you’ll be able to confidently answer, “What are you going to do with that?”

Throwback Thursday: Chokers

Collegiettes: start digging deep into the depths of your wardrobe, because chokers, aka the jewelry staple of the ’90s, are making a comeback. These aren’t just your stretchy, plastic chokers you donned on the first day of your second grade year, either. (Though we still love those!) Chokers are everywhere, in styles ranging from minimalist to edgy to bohemian, proving you don’t have to be the Olsen twins circa 1998 to pull one off. Below, we rounded up six of our favorite styles that update this throwback jewelry piece.

1. Black Choker Necklace (Brandy Melville, $5)

The original black stretch choker is back in all of its ’90s-esque glory. In case you don't (still) have yours, this one from Brandy Melville is just the thing. We love this paired with a chunky knit, oversize sweater to enhance the grunge-inspired look.

2. Big Faux Pearl Choker Necklace (ASOS, $22.85)

Pearls are definitely one of the biggest jewelry trends for fall, and what better way to wear them than on a choker? Go totally girly with a flowy chiffon dress, or go edgy with a graphic tee.

3. Faux Leather Rhinestone Choker (Forever 21, $5.90)

Not a fan of the dainty look? This leather choker is perfect for you. The leather is tough, but its impact is glammed-up by a chic rhinestone center, making it the perfect statement piece for a night out.

4. Double or Nothing Necklace (Nasty Gal, $20)

Minimalists, this one’s for you. This piece may be subtle, but the simple double strands in a clean, gold finish make it look way more expensive that it actually is.

5. ‘Arrow’ Open Choker (Nordstrom, $30)

We love this cool update to the classic choker shape. The arrows add an edge to the piece, but the thin chains make it as subtle as your favorite pendant necklace.

6. Opaque Navette Stone Choker (Topshop, $22)

Shake up your usual colorful statement necklace with this eye-catching statement choker. We love way the bright colors give a bohemian, relaxed vibe to this piece.

What's your favorite way to rock this trend, collegiettes?

11 Throwback Halloween Costumes Every ‘90s Girl Will Love

$

0

Everyone loves a #tbt, and even though Halloween this year is on a Friday, it’s still the perfect chance for an old-school reference as a costume. Here are some Halloween costumes every ‘90s girl will love!

1. Lizzie McGuire

Lizzie McGuire is too classic not to be your Halloween costume! If only your closet was as cool as hers back in the day. All you need are some super-bright, patterned bell-bottom pants and an equally vibrant top. Crimp your hair (if you still own one of those ancient artifacts), throw on a thick headband and you’re good to go. You can even get two friends to join you as Gordo and Miranda, because where would Lizzie be without her awesome sidekicks?

2. The Powerpuff Girls

Sugar, spice and everything nice. These little girls were kicking butt back in the ‘90s and still dealing with all the troubles of being a kid (how old were they actually?).

These costumes couldn’t be easier. All you need are some white tights, some black shoes and a pink, green or blue dress. You can fashion a black belt out of felt, and you’re ready to fight crime and the forces of evil!

3. Rugrats

These babies were the ultimate tight-knit crew and will make the perfect Halloween costume for a group. Just put together some makeshift diapers out of towels or fabric. If you dress up as Chuckie, you’re gonna need to get a wig for his classic hairdo. However, for everyone else, all you really need is a bald cap, a bow or pigtails. You can decorate oversized shirts with felt in the appropriate patterns. You can even bring bottles with you if you so choose. Who run the world? Babies.

4. Saved by the Bell

Going out as the Bayside crew is also a great option. It’s all about bright patterns, big shoulder pads and even bigger hair. Hit up Goodwill for some oversized sweaters, mom jeans and tank tops. The tighter and higher the pants, the better. If you can find an old-school cellphone, you may be in the running for best throwback costume of the weekend.

5. The Rocket Power Gang

If you have a group and are trying to be a total skater bro all night, this is the costume for you. Otto needs some crazy hair, a headband, a yellow shirt and red shorts. Reggie needs a purple wig (or temporary hair dye), a magenta shirt with a yellow rocket decal attached and camo pants. Twister needs a white shirt with a blue tank layered over it and khaki cargo shorts. Squid needs an oversized yellow shirt with a red “N” on it, glasses, jeans and a makeshift shark helmet. Your group is gonna be riding around the streets with the ultimate old-school swag.

6. Mario Kart

This is another fun group costume. You and your friends can dress up as your favorite characters. Overalls, appropriately colored T-shirts, hats and a mustache work for Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Try a pink dress for Princess Peach or a yellow dress for Princess Daisy along with tiaras if you want. And Toad just needs a toadstool hat and a blue shirt. You can basically turn any of the characters into a costume!

Each of you then can paint your own box “car” with balloons attached, and you’re ready to hit the speedways this Halloween.

7. Spice Girls

People of the world, SPICE UP YOUR LIFE… with this Halloween costume! You have your choice between Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice and Posh Spice. Make sure to wear some serious platform shoes. Then, follow each of the girls’ style. Scary Spice requires the signature crazy hair and some sort of animal-print dress. You can’t be Baby Spice without the pigtails. Sporty is the comfiest with her athletic gear (swishy pants and a crop top not optional). Ginger Spice always rocks the Union Jack dress, and Posh should have a tight, short LBD.

8. Britney Spears throughout the ages

It’s Britney, b*tch. The pop princess will give you multiple options for costumes, whether you want to go solo or as a group.

“…Baby One More Time” is always a crowd-pleaser. All you need are braided pigtails, a tied-off cardigan and button down, a schoolgirl skirt, high socks and Mary Janes. If you can somehow find a red latex bodysuit, you’ve got a solid costume for “Oops!... I Did It Again.” Whatever you decide on, don’t forget a fake headset and a lot of sass.

9. Legends of the Hidden Temple

This may actually be the simplest costume ever! We all loved Legends of the Hidden Temple; the only thing we wanted to do more than be on this game show was to get slimed.

For this costume, you need the shirt in the appropriate colors with your chosen symbol stapled on the front. Then, throw on a helmet and some knee and elbow pads. As a refresher, the teams were the Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes. But let’s be real, the Blue Barracudas were the best.

10. Troll Dolls

When’s the last time you saw a Troll doll? Seriously, think back to those naked little dolls that fell somewhere between creepy and cute.

This is such an easy costume; all you need is a nude leotard or dress. Pull your hair up around a water bottle stationed on top of your head. Load up on the hairspray, throw on some temporary hair dye and you’re a troll doll! It’s as simple as that. And when else would you get to parade around looking completely naked? Answer: basically never, unless you’re at a nudist colony.

11. Romy and Michele

This movie was a classic! If you can scrounge up some metallic dresses, you’re seriously so lucky and on your way to costume perfection. Hot-glue a feather boa to the hem of your dress, and you’re ready to take on the ultimate high school reunion this Halloween. Add the most blinged-out jewelry and accessories you can find. A giant cellphone would be a great touch, too.

Whatever you decide, you really can’t go wrong with a throwback costume. Everyone loves a classic, so you’ll be a hit this Halloween!

Real Live College Guy Dale: I’m Falling for My Ex Again

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

I've been hooking up with my ex for quite a while now immediately after we broke up (which I knew was a bad idea). Now I realize my feelings for him are getting a bit too strong even though we established that we wouldn't have feelings for each other. I know I should stop, and I feel like he's the kind of guy who doesn't really care about what I do, but at the same time, one night he told me he kind of had feelings for me. Now what do I do? –Down in the Dumps at Delaware

Pull back, Delaware.

You just admitted that hooking up with an ex was a bad move, and even though I totally understand rebounding, I couldn’t agree with you more. You two broke up for a reason, and no matter what that reason was, I think part of your sudden realization that you have feelings for him is stemming more from you missing a physical connection than anything emotional.

Looking at this from my point of view, I see two red flags on his end. One, according to you, he’s the kind of guy who “doesn’t really care” what you do. Maybe it’s just me, but even the most easygoing boyfriend should care about what his girlfriend is doing. I’m not saying guys should be nosy and paranoid all the time, but, for example, if my girlfriend is going out with her friends for the night, I’d think that shooting her a text asking how everything is going would be good. Doing this is simply a nice gesture; you’re showing you care, but one or two messages isn’t overbearing. Some guys are insecure about letting their partners go out, so they need constant updates. For any guy reading this: Don’t be that guy.

Anyway, according to you, this guy isn’t the type of guy to care about what you’re doing. If he doesn’t care, why should you?

The other issue is that, one night, however long ago, he told you he “kind of had feelings” for you. Kind of.Maybe. That’s bait if I ever saw it, Delaware. That statement is enough to pull a girl in and then keep her there, because he knows you want him (or something along those lines). It’s a trap and – even though it’s not something I’m proud to admit – it’s a trap I’ve put out myself a couple of times before. Why? Because sometimes we aren’t totally sure how we feel about someone, so instead of confronting the issue head-on, we’ll throw out, “I kind of like you,” or, “I’m not sure how I feel about everything yet, but I’m not saying ‘never.’” That kind of statement leaves a girl (or guy, whatever) with hope.

What do you do? You separate yourself from the situation and maybe go a few days or weeks without hooking up with anyone, especially your ex. Not every relationship lasts forever, and that’s fine. Like I said, you two broke up for a reason. Examine why you broke up, examine why you’re hooking up with him and then move on with lessons learned.

The Top 7 Girl-Power Anthems

$

0

There's a reason why we love to belt out our favorite songs performed by female artists: So many of them celebrate girl power! There's nothing better than when powerhouses like Christina Aguilera or Beyoncé reject stereotypical notions about women and declare how society should be. We've rounded up the top seven tunes that best empower us ladies to feel confident, independent and happy, so turn up the volume and check them out!

1. "Run the World (Girls)" - Beyoncé

The title is self-explanatory, but to get the full effect of Queen Bey's message, you need to see the music video. As she declares a tribute to all the women "on [their] grind," she and her army of female dancers bust a move before the swarm of nervous-looking, shield-wielding men standing there. "Who are we? What we run?" It's basically one big cheer, and Beyoncé is the spirit leader.

2. "Can't Hold Us Down" - Christina Aguilera (feat. Lil' Kim)

Though Christina Aguilera is known more for producing sultry, jazzy songs that deal with themes like love, she occasionally comes out with a female-empowering tune like "Can’t Hold Us Down." The hip-hop song is a direct criticism of the double standards women have to deal with in society. By rejecting the notion that “all women should be seen, not heard,” Aguilera proposes that we ladies “shout out loud [and let] them know we’re gonna stand our ground!”

3. "I Am Woman" - Helen Reddy

If you’ve never heard of this song, it’s likely because it was released in 1971, but it was actually a hit at the time because of the women's movement that was going on. Fun fact: the ladies of Sex and the City sing this song karaoke-style in the second film when they’re in Abu Dhabi (so you may have actually heard it!). Reddy, an Australian pop singer, describes the frustration and pride she has felt in relation to her journey as a woman seeking equality. “Yes, I am wise, but it’s wisdom born of pain,” she reflects. “I’ve paid the price, but look how much I gained.”

4. "Try" - Colbie Caillat

Colbie Caillat starts this song with what seems like an order: “Put your makeup on, get your nails done, curl your hair, run the extra mile, keep it slim.” It’s everything that gets implanted into young women’s heads. But Caillat is rejecting these ideas! To prove it, she sheds all of her makeup throughout the music video —fake eyelashes, foundation, metallic eyeliner and all.

5. "One Girl Revolution" - Superchick

Superchick, whose heyday was in the early 2000s, is probably long forgotten in your mind, but their songs sent powerful messages to women. “I’ll be everything that I want to be, I am confidence and insecurity, I am a voice yet waiting to be heard.” This catchy song gets in your face. The ladies of Superchick want you to break free and stand up for your beliefs.

6. "Independent Women" - Destiny's Child

This song focuses on the fact that women shouldn’t need a man to lean on in order to have nice things or be happy. Though you may not have understood what it meant to be an independent woman when this song first came out (likely because we were in elementary school), the song still probably stuck with you. We mean, how awesome is it to listen to this song while strutting down the street?

7. "She Works Hard for the Money" - Donna Summer

Okay, this song isn't exactly current, but this '80s jam still sends a great message. Women everywhere work very hard – some raise kids, some balance multiple jobs, some have to do both – and all of them deserve respect. So, as Summer puts it, “you better treat her right!”

Honestly, songs that promote girl power are the best. They make us happy and all-around proud to be women. Which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

10 Homemade Halloween Costumes You Can Make From Things You Already Have

Halloween is just around the corner, and it seems like every other Facebook notification is an event invitation for a costume party. You might love dressing up, but if you’re running seriously low on cash and can’t drop the big bucks on an expensive costume, each invite can be a huge bummer. That’s why Her Campus found 11 fabulous DIY Halloween costumes for collegiettes on a budget made from items you already have in your closet!

1. '80s Workout Girl

You can’t go wrong with a flashy workout costume from the '80s. Halloween costumes can be so itchy and all around uncomfortable, but in colorful gym clothes, you'll definitely be comfortable! If you have any bright-colored spandex items, this is your chance to wear them. If you don’t own anything like that, have no fear! Just slip on some leggings, throw on an off-the-shoulder top, cozy up in some leg warmers or long socks and tie your hair up in a high ponytail, and you’re good to go!

2. Hippie

Want a Halloween costume that will make you feel groovy? Look no further! This costume can be as simple as a tie-dyed tee and a pair of jeans. If you don’t have a tie-dyed shirt, you can make one without even buying a kit. Follow these instructions to turn an old white T-shirt into a tie-dyed tee using food coloring and vinegar. Straighten your hair and wear it down with a headband or headscarf. Complete your look with a handmade protest sign with a peaceful saying like, “Make Love, Not War.”

3. Waldo

This cute and classic costume is great to wear in a large crowd or at a big party!  All you need to pull it off is a red-and-white striped shirt and hat, circular glasses and a cane (or just a long stick).  You can put a girly twist on this look with a short blue skirt, or keep it comfortable in the chilly fall weather with jeans.

4. Marilyn Monroe

If you’re someone who likes it hot, you can channel the glamour of this classic Hollywood icon with just a simple, sexy white dress; red lipstick; large stud earrings and curled hair.  Though this isn't the warmest attire, a little extra wind will only add to the costume’s effect!

5. Rosie the Riveter

With the gender-equality movement HeForShe gaining popularity, it's a great time to represent feminism through Rosie the Riveter. This costume can be so powerful, yet it requires very little effort to create! Just pair a chambray or denim button-down with a red bandana. For an added touch, apply some red lipstick!

6. Grumpy Cat

If Halloween isn’t really your holiday and you practically have to be dragged out by your friends, channel your lack of spirit by dressing up as Grumpy Cat! As far as clothing, all you really need is a white or tan T-shirt and pants. For your makeup, start by powdering your entire face (white eye shadow works). Next, apply the darkest brown makeup you own, whether it’s eye shadow or bronzer, around your eyes and down your cheeks. For your nose, apply pink blush. Then, use eyeliner or lip pencil for whiskers. Lastly, don’t forget to frown!

7. Old-School Britney

Pay homage to the princess of pop by dressing up like Britney from the “...Baby One More Time” days. All you’ll need is a plaid skirt, a white button-down shirt (knotted in the front to show off your waist) and a grey sweater to complete this look. Put your hair in braided pigtails with ribbons at the ends. Extra credit if you wear knee-high socks. A great group costume would be Britney through the ages – each girl dresses in an iconic Britney outfit!

8. Wednesday Addams

All you need to be Wednesday for Halloween is a white button-down, a black dress or a sweater and pants. Braid your hair in pigtails and finish the look off with heavy, black eye makeup and a dark lip color.

9. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande was one of the most talked-about celebrities this year, so wee have a feeling there will be a bunch of Ariana-Grande-inspired costumes this Halloween. The best part about dressing up as her is that there’s no one look you need to embrace. Just choose an outfit that is sparkly, sexy, girly and chic! A circle skirt would work great, as would a fitted peplum top or a dress with a sweetheart neckline. Just be sure to rock her signature sky-high ponytail, your pair of highest heels and thick, winged eyeliner. Bonus points if you never let anyone see the right side of your face.

10. Minnie Mouse

Dressing like Mickey’s main squeeze for Halloween couldn’t be simpler. All you’ll need is a red dress and black tights. Cut out circles of white felt or paper for polka dots and glue them to your clothes. Make a pair of mouse ears out of cardboard or paper and glue them to a headband. Draw on a mouse nose using black eyeliner, and top off the look with a red bow in your hair.

Beauty-savvy collegiettes are often product junkies who know exactly what they like to use and when to use it. On occasion, we might find ourselves in a situation where we aren’t able to get back to our rooms to grab our own fave products, like when we decide to stay the night at our guy’s place last minute and haven’t stocked up on our essentials.

Even though this can be inconvenient, your beauty regimen doesn’t have to suffer completely. While guy’s products aren’t just like ours, you’d be surprised to learn how many guy products can be useful to collegiettes. Here are a few of our tried and true suggestions.

You Forgot Your: Makeup Remover

Use His: Vaseline or Light Body Lotion

Unless you want your smokey eyes to turn into raccoon eyes in the morning, you need to make sure you remove your makeup before you go to sleep. Vaseline can be an effective makeup remover when you’ve left yours at home. Use a cotton pad to apply a small amount to your eyes and swipe across your eyes to remove any traces of makeup. If your guy doesn’t have any Vaseline, a bit of light, unscented body lotion will do the trick as well.

You Forgot Your: Facial Cleanser

Use His: Dove Body Soap

It’s important to wash your face every night before bed, especially if you have foundation on. A simple bar soap such as one from Dove can be the perfect substitute to your facial cleanser for the evening. It’s gentle and non-irritating, and will be able to clean your face just as thoroughly.

You Forgot Your: Moisturizer

Use His: Face Cream or Light Body Lotion

After you cleanse you face, don’t forget to moisturize! For gals with skincare-savvy boyfriends who have a handle on their skincare routine, you’re in luck, since using his face cream (like this one from J. Paul Skincare) before bed is a must. It most likely contains ingredients that can benefit your skin too, so don't be afraid to reach for the jar. If he doesn't have a face cream, using some of his body lotion (avoid heavy creams!) will also suffice for a night.

You Forgot Your: Razor

Use His: Men's Razor

If you haven't tried a men's razor, you just might need to. Men's razors are known for being highly effective, as they're designed to give a super close shave since they are made to shave faces. Yep—you might find that your legs are just that...much...silkier. We're particularly obsessed with Harry's razors—they're budget-friendly and deliver amazing results (you might end up transitioning to these permanently)!

You Forgot Your: Floral or Fruit-Scented Women’s Deodorant

Use His: Fresh Scent Men’s Deodorant

Would you rather smell like your guy, or...well, much, much worse? That's what we thought. Don't hestitate to reach for his Old Spice in your time of need. And since different fragrances react different based on the oils in your skin, you might end up liking how his deodorant smells on you. And depending on the brand, his deodorant might do a far better job of controlling perspiration and body odor in comparison to women’s deodorants.

We're thankful for the men in our lives, and now we can be thankful for their grooming products too! Next time you find yourself in a situation where you need products when you've forgotten yours, try one of these collegiette-friendly men's products to save face.

7 Easy & Delicious Fall Recipes to Try

The second October rolls around, the only thing that seems to matter is staying cozy, whether it’s by curling up by the fireplace or baking a warm treat. There’s no better feeling than the one you get when you decide to try that delicious-looking apple tart recipe you found on Pinterest. As you begin to skim the ingredients list, you stumble upon “butter churn” —butter churn?! You realize you definitely don’t know what that is, and you definitely don’t have one, so that’s the end of that recipe attempt.

Don’t let complex recipes and cooking utensils spook you out of the kitchen this season, though, because there are plenty of manageable and almost effortless recipes out there! We’ve rounded up seven simple fall recipes that don’t require strange utensils you don’t have or ingredients you’ve never heard of, so check them out!

1. Cinnamon and Spice Sweet Potato Bread

The Best Coed Group Halloween Costumes for 2014

One of the best parts about Halloween is being with your friends. While it might be easier to figure out a solo costume, group costumes are 10 times more fun! They may take a little more time and coordination, but with a great group and the right supplies, you can create some awesome coed group costumes that will sure to be the talk of the party.

1. Frozen

Really wanted to dress up as Elsa solo? Let it go! Being the entire Frozen cast is way more fun—plus, it might inspire you to all build a snowman together in December. Key members of this group include Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Hans and Kristoff.

For Elsa, just think sparkles. Anything blue and sparkly would work. Do your makeup with hints of sparkle as well and rock one French braid down the back of your head. Consider buying a small Styrofoam ball, too. For Anna, stick with dark blues in your outfit and find a pink sweater to tie around your shoulders. Wear your hair in two braids, or even invest in a redhead wig!

While Olaf costumes do exist, they can be pricey. Being Olaf just means dressing in all white, cutting black construction paper for the buttons and painting your nose orange. For Hans, have one of your guy friends wear a blazer or white jacket (if they have one), dress pants and nice shoes. Slicked-back hair and sideburns would be a plus. And for Kristoff, it’s all about the layering. Pair a wintry sweater with a hat and some gloves. Add a leather bag with a carrot, and your guy friend will be good to go! Bonus points if you all break out in song at least once.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Meet the new face of justice: Your group as TMNT for Halloween. This is a great throwback costume for a group, and you can make the outfits yourselves! Start with plain green T-shirts and get some yellow fabric paint. Paint yellow circles on the front and add in some ab lines. Pair your shirts with green shorts (and for the ladies, maybe green tights). Make eye masks from different colored fabric (purple, red, orange and blue) and add a brown fabric belt. To step it up a notch, buy an aluminum roaster pan (you can find them at the grocery store) and spray-paint it green. Attach yarn straps like a backpack, and you have a shell! You’ll be ready to fight crime all Halloween long.  Be sure to stop for pizza!

3. Famous Babies

Let’s face it, celebrity babies are already more popular than we’ll ever be (and they can hardly talk yet…). Why not be them for Halloween? While it’s hard to dress up like a baby, you can use creative plays on words to put together your costumes.

For example, for Blue Ivy Carter, you could dress in blue and buy some fake leaves to wrap around yourself. If you want to be Kimye’s offspring, create a cardboard compass to wear and highlight the northwest point on it. Feeling royal? Rock a crown, staff and sash with Prince George’s full name on it. Or you could also be the unborn royal baby with a crown and a big question mark. If you’re feeling really committed, buy some adult onesies and pacifiers to complete the look.

4. Emojis

Everyone has their go-to emojis (twin dancing girls, anyone?), so why not be them for Halloween? If you want to have a cohesive group costume, consider being the many smiley faces. The best part is you can make these yourself!

Buy some yellow poster board and paint on your desired smiley face. Add accessories like sunglasses or a halo, depending on your face.  Attach some string so you can wear it over your shoulders, and wear all black underneath.

Microsoft CEO Apologizes for Advising Women Not to Ask for Raises

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella apologized Thursday night after receiving heavy criticism for suggesting women shouldn't ask for raises at a celebration for women in computing. When asked what advice he had for women who feel uncomfortable asking for a raise, he said women who don't ask for raises have a "superpower" and gain good karma by trusting the system to eventually give them the right raises in the long run.

"It's not really about asking for the raise," Nadella told the audience of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference, "but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along. And that, I think, might be one of the additional superpowers that, quite frankly, women who don't ask for raises have. Because that's good karma, that'll come back."

Many audience members and online watchers took to Twitter to complain about Nadella's sexist-sounding comments:

The gender gap in the computing industry is unquestionable. Only 26 percent of the computing workforce in the U.S. was made up of women in 2013 (only a one percent increase since 2011), according to the National Center for Women and Information Technology. And on average, women in the workplace only earn about three quarters of the salary that their male counterparts make doing the same job, reports Mashable. Even more troubling is the lack of diversity. In 2013, only 10 percent of computing jobs in the U.S. were held by women of color.

Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference moderator Maria Klawe countered Nadella's sexist advice, politely saying this was one of the few times she disagreed with him. The audience cheered the successful Harvey Mudd president and Microsoft board member on. Klawe explained how she ended up getting $50,000 less than she should have when she was hired as the dean of engineering in Princeton.

Klawe then advised women to not "be stupid like [she was]" by first doing their homework on salaries and the like. She advised them to research the appropriate salary for the job they're being offered. Klawe also suggested role-playing by practicing asking for the salary you really deserve with someone you trust.

Nadella later admitted his mistake, tweeting, "Was inarticulate re how women should ask for raise. Our industry must close gender pay gap so a raise is not needed because of a bias #GHC14" after several audience members and watchers took to Twitter to complain.

He further apologized in a publicized email to Microsoft employees later that night, writing in part, "I answered that question completely wrong. Without a doubt I wholeheartedly support programs at Microsoft and in the industry that bring more women into technology and close the pay gap. I believe men and women should get equal pay for equal work. And when it comes to career advice on getting a raise when you think it’s deserved, Maria’s advice was the right advice. If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask."

Maria Klawe gave some great advice for us on how to ask for a raise. We'd love to hear advice from you as well, collegiettes! Share your thoughts by commenting below!
