Science Says Your Coffee Addiction May Help You Live Longer After All

To all my fellow coffee-lovers, I have some great news for you. A new study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine found that drinking coffee could increase chances of longer life, even those who drink up to 8 cups a day. It also doesn’t matter the type of coffee or if it is caffeinated or decaf!

The researchers used data from the UK Biobank study that asked a large group of UK adults to complete a health survey, physical examination, and to provide biological samples. The current study looked at 500,000 British adults and compared their coffee intake. They were then asked about their coffee consumption, smoking and drinking habits, health history, and more. In the 10-year follow-up, around 14,200 of those people had died. Those who chugged down multiple cups of coffee each day had a lower risk of death over a ten year period than those who never had some in their life. Those who drank at least 8 cups a day, specifically, saw their death rates cut by nearly 14 percent! According to the UK Food Standards Agency, 8 cups is twice the maximum amount of caffeine recommended. Those who drank seven to six cups a day had lowered their risk by 16 percent. Those who drank one cup per day had an 8 percent lowered risk.

Prior research suggested that coffee consumption could be related to high risks of high blood pressure and heart attack in those who slowly metabolize caffeine. According to NPR, previous studies didn’t look at the overall mortality risk as well. The longevity-boosting effect of decaf coffee and the fact that the speed metabolizing caffeine doesn’t affect longevity suggests that the caffeine in coffee doesn’t extend life.

“Our current understanding of coffee and health is primarily based on findings from observational studies,” said Dr. Erikka Loftfield, the studies lead investigator and research fellow at the National Cancer Institute, to Time

There was no association recognized between any amount of coffee consumed and long-term health risks including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and cancer. But coffee has long beenlinked with combating illnesseslike heart disease, cancer, dementia, diabetes, and depression. Since it is rich in antioxidants that reduces inflammation and boosts lung function and sensitivity to insulin.

“Our study provides further evidence that coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet and offers reassurance to coffee drinkers,” Loftfield said to Time

A GOP Congressman Says He's Being 'Bullied' By Former Student Athletes Who Allege He Ignored Claims Of Sex Abuse At Ohio State

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, is facing accusations from former Ohio State wrestlers who claim that Jordan turned a blind eye to cases of sexual abuse during his tenure as coach more than two decades ago.

In April, Ohio State announced that it was investigating accusations that Dr. Richard Strauss, who died in 2005, abused members of the wrestling team when he was the team doctor from the mid-1970s to late 1990s.

Jordan, who was assistant wrestling coach at the university from 1986 to 1994, stated that he was unaware of any allegations of abuse until former students began speaking out earlier this year. His remarks on this matter have been met with skepticism by former members of the wrestling team.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Jordan’s office would contact Capitol Hill police with regards to an email the congressman from an alleged victim of sexual abuse at Ohio State University. A source told CNN that multiple emails were sent by this person and that Jordan did not respond to any of them because he felt the man was “bullying him.”

The man behind the emails, Michael DiSabato, competed in four seasons between 1987 and 1991, reported CNN. DiSabato claimed that he was 14-years old when he was first inspected by Dr. Strauss and that the abuse occurred over a span of nine years, including during his time as a graduate student.

Speaking to the powerlessness he felt as an alleged victim of sexual abuse, DiSabato said, "If you wanted your meds, if you wanted to stay healthy ... so that you could stay on scholarship, you grinned and beared it, so to speak," he said.

DiSabato holds firm to his belief that Rep. Jordan knew about the alleged abuse. “I considered Jim Jordan a friend,” DiSabato told NBC. “But at the end of the day, he is absolutely lying if he says he doesn’t know what was going on.”

Jordan continues to deny knowledge of the abuse, telling reporters in Ohio, as reported by ThinkProgress, on Wednesday, “We knew of no abuse, never heard of abuse. If we had, we would have reported it. If, in fact, there’s problems, we want justice for the people who were victims, obviously, and as I said, we are happy to talk with the folks who are doing the investigation. But the things they said about me just were flat-out not true.”

Jordan also claimed that he was not contacted by anyone investigating these allegations, though lawyers hired by Ohio State to probe the allegations told The Columbus Dispatch that Jordan was contacted by phone and by email, several times, for an interview request but he never responded.

Stormy Daniels Lawyer Michael Avenatti May Run For President In 2020 Against Trump

Trump just might have an opponent ready to challenge his seat in the Oval Office. Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti said on Wednesday he would run for president in 2020 if Trump sought reelection. There is a catch though. Avenatti said he would run only if he believes no other candidate would successfully be able to run against the President.

“If (big) he seeks re-election, I will run, but only if I think that there is no other candidate in the race that has a REAL chance at beating him,” Avenatti tweeted on Wednesday, after someone asked when he would announce his 2020 run. “We can’t relive 2016. I love this country, our values and our people too much to sit by while they are destroyed. #FightClub #Basta.”

Avenatti is currently battling Trump in the courts on behalf of adult film star Stephanie Clifford (AKA Stormy Daniels), who claims she had an affair with the president in 2006. According to CBS News, Daniels claims that she received $130,000 in hush money from Trump’s previous lawyer Michael Cohen right before the 2016 presidential elections. Later,Daniels filed a suit in California asking to remove the non-disclosure agreement that has prevented her from talking about the alleged scandal. Trump has denied the affairs, according to CNN. Her case also accuses Michael Cohen of defamation.

According to Avenatti’s tweets, he thinks he could be the nontraditional candidate this country needs to beat Trump. “To those that claim that only a tradition politician with ‘experience’ can beat Trump, go back & look at the results from 2016. He beat all 15 of those candidates that he faced (crushed many). If we go down the same path and are not smart, don’t be surprised with the result.”

He appeared on CNN later and hinted at a possible presidential platform focused on breaking down Trump’s immigration policies, raising the US international reputation, and targeting America’s unemployment. The attorney has shown his clear disdain for the president ever since he began representing Daniels. He’s frequently criticized the administration’s policy on separating family at the border. As well, he’s mentioned that other women have claimed to have had affairs with Trump, News Week reports.

Avenatti has previously tweeted that whoever faces Trump in the 2020 elections better be “a take no prisoners street fighter” who is ready for a “brutal campaign”.

Interestingly though, Avenatti has mentioned before having no interest in any type of political career. “I am extremely flatter[ed] by the suggestions that I attempt to become AG or run for the House or Senate but I have ZERO interest in those jobs. None. I don’t want to become a career politician. We have too many as it is,” he tweeted just this weekend.

It seems that he has changed his mind about the position in a matter of days! He also mentioned how he is really only interested in “exposing the truth about Mr. Trump’s conduct and fighting like hell for the principles that matter so the American people can decide what happens next.”

Who knows if Michael Avenatti will actually run for president in 2020 against Trump, but his growing presence in the larger narrative surrounding the Trump presidency remains one to watch.

8 Reasons You Should Stan Evangeline Lilly

$

Ant-man and the Wasp is finally here, and it’s about time because we need a pick-me-up after Avengers: Infinity War (because Thor: Ragnarok can only do so much to numb our post-Thanos woes). Before we see Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) take names and kick ass in theaters, we can’t help but appreciate how Rudd and Lilly have been killing it during their press tour.

When they aren’t making ant-sized feasts, Rudd and Lilly have been talking about some serious topics in their interview barrage. Lilly specifically has been unabashedly discussing body positivity, age positivity, women empowerment and so much more.

While you might already be a Marvel-stan-slut (which is perfectly acceptable and encouraged), you should definitely stan Evangeline Lilly (if you don’t already), and here are just a few reasons why:

1. She’s brutally honest with fan questions

TBH, we’d watch a movie that showcased a team-up between Wasp and Mantis—because we’re pro-insect alliances. Beyond her comical, but truthful, commentary about how empowering women characters are often overlooked in the Marvel fandom (and fandoms in general), Lilly’s comment about Wasp and Mantis could have a hidden message.

After all, Mantis is a highly powerful character in the Marvel comic books, yet her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) counterpart doesn’t seem to have half of her comic self’s skills and abilities.

2. She isn’t afraid to call out the men of MCU

Most of the men’s costumes are glorified jumpsuits. Meanwhile, many of the women of the MCU has to wear suspiciously revealing clothing.

It’s bad enough that Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlett Witch) doesn’t know who her real parents are (i.e. Magda and Magneto), but she also has to protect the world while wearing a corset. Seriously, corsets don’t scream comfortable.

Keep telling them, Evangeline.

3. She empowered herself to use her voice on set

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lilly said that she didn’t shy away from providing her input on the Wasp’s character. “I wanted [Hope] to have a signature style that little girls, like I was when I was a feminine, girly little girl, would be able to fall in love with,” Lilly said. We’re already in love with your attention to detail and the border spectrum of your impact on young women. So, how could we not love Hope (aka the Wasp)?

Ultimately, using her power to speak up both on and off set also indirectly shows young women that they can use their own voices to make progressive change, which can create a ripple effect and continue to inspire women for generations to come. (And how can you ~not~ stan someone inspiring other women to influence even more women?)

4. She got ripped AF for her role—which sets a body-positive message to young women

As Lilly inspires young women with the Wasp’s fighting style, she’s also aiding physically strong women superheroes, like Tessa Thompson, to show viewers that being physically strong is a positive movement.

For reals, comic book women superheroes have been revitalized as petite women, which implies that there are specific beauty and body standards for physically strong women crime-fighters. Yet, there’s no set way a woman superhero should look or act (just like there's no way that a real-life woman should look or act). Bolstering a muscular physique can exemplify to young women that they don’t need to conform to traditional physical appearance. (Because muscles aren’t just an aesthetic—they’re a useful feature, and women should feel empowered to flaunt their bodies regardless of their muscles or lack thereof.)

5. She also gets real about age-positivity

Amid her many memorable moments during the Ant-man and the Wasp press tour, Lilly discussed how her role as Hope helped her challenge her own perspectives on aging, particularly for aging women. In the video, Lilly says that she's elated that the public is finally recognizing that "women are at their most powerful in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. They grow into their power." Experience equals powers, so getting older just means we become more powerful with age.

Honestly, this beautiful outlook on growing older defines how we look at the aging process as a whole. Now, we can't wait until we grow our own "sparklies," so we can harness the power of our gray hairs.

Lilly’s flipping the hackneyed scripts about body positivity, women superheroes and aging. We can’t wait to see what other outdated norms she’ll redefine.

6. She wants a Marvel film entirely made up of women

via GIPHY

Lilly told Comicbook.com that she wants to see an all-women MCU movie. And, she just gets us because we’ve been waiting 10 freaking years for all-women Marvel lineup. This could be a reality, seeing as the Marvel Studios overlord Kevin Feige has hinted that women are the future of the MCU on numerous occasions.

Tessa Thompson, i.e. the living breathing Valkyrie, has already started planting the seeds for an all-women movie and she’s continuously watering the idea so that it eventually blooms. Honestly, we hope that Lilly and Thompson can work on the long-overdue movie together. Danai Gurira could write the script too, seeing as she’s a Tony-nominated screenplay writer and we'd trust her to write anything including our Bumble messages (we also trust her with our lives, but that’s besides the point).

7. Plus, Lilly’s character could eventually lead the Avengers

via GIPHY

That’s right! In the Marvel comics, Janet Van Dyne led the Avengers for a brief period of time. Although Hope isn’t her mother, she could fill Janet’s crucial comic book role moving forward in the MCU.

If you’re going to argue that Hope leading a team of superheroes isn’t canon with the comics, just recognize that not everything in the MCU follows the comic book panels. For good reason, too, seeing as watching Thanos’ creepy courtship with Death herself probably wouldn’t have made a palatable movie or cinematic story arc. (Especially since Death is too good for him anyway.)

So, cinematic creative liberty isn’t absurd or out of the question for Hope’s future as an Avenger.

8. Lilly’s character is the first ever Marvel woman to have her name in the title of a movie

via GIPHY

Hope Van Dyne is the first ever woman superhero to have her name (the Wasp) grace an MCU movie title.  It’s a monumental moment for Marvel, for women and for fans. The Wasp’s titular debut can lead to more prevalent representation for women superheroes in the MCU, which the universe is desperately lacking.

After all, there are 246 days until Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers) not only gets her own solo film— but her character will also have her own titular movie. While Captain Marvel’s inaugural screen time has been in the making for the last few weeks, the Wasp’s title achievement could infest the MCU with even more vital women-led titles.

After all, women shouldn’t be reduced to sidekicks and refrigerator content. As long as Evangeline Lilly continues to inspire women with her brutally badass self and empowering ideology, we can’t help but stan.

There's Footage Of Andy Dick Groping Ivanka Trump On Live TV & It's Really Gross

Earlier this week, comedian Andy Dick was charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of simple battery for making an inappropriate comment to a woman who was walking by him on the street. The victim reported that he touched her as well, and made unwanted advances, according to Variety

The comedian was recently fired in October from the indie film, “Raising Buchanan,” for sexual harassment and misconduct allegations.

In light of his recent charges and long history of sexual harassment, a video from a 2007 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! resurfaced, and Dick can be seen groping Ivanka Trump.

Trump was appearing on the night-time talk show to discuss her father’s reality television series, "The Apprentice," and minutes into the interview Dick began to rub her leg and said to her, “You don’t play up the glitter on your legs?"

Trump immediately laughed it off and brushed his hand away. But for the remainder of the interview she covered her thighs with her hands and Kimmel even interjected at one point by saying, “Andy, don’t, please, don’t touch Ivanka.” Things escalated and he was removed from the interview by security, according to PEOPLE

Dick addressed the interview in December of last year with a long Instagram post and said, “The time I 'groped' Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Her legs were sparkling, and I was trying to see if the glitter would wipe off. I also mistakenly thought she would date me. I was jokingly carried off by security.”

He never apologized for his inappropriate behavior, and went on to address President Donald Trump’s long-standing history of sexual harassment and the double standard that he feels he has been the recipient of.

Regardless, it goes without saying that you should never touch another person without their consent. Period.

Ben Shapiro Is Suing the University of Minnesota After They Moved His Speech To A Smaller Campus

Conservative groups are suing the University of Minnesota, arguing that the school violated their free speech rights by moving Ben Shapiro, a conservative political commentator, to its smaller campus in St. Paul. Shapiro, who is a plaintiff in the lawsuit, was invited to speak by two campus political organizations, Students for a Conservative Voice and the Young America's Foundation.

The students originally wanted to hold the event in a 1,000-seat hall in the main Minneapolis campus in Minneapolis. Shapiro, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire and a self-professed advocate of free speech, has often been met by protestors at his events, so when university officials cited safety concerns, the event was moved to a 400-seat ballroom in St. Paul, reported CBS.

The speech held in February attracted a few dozen protestors but the police were able to block off nearby roads to control the crowd.

The plaintiffs of the lawsuit allege that the university has a "Speech Suppression Policy." When asked to clarify, Tyson Langhofer, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom who is defending Shapiro, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "No university official has the authority to suppress viewpoints simply because of how someone might respond to it. Like all government officials, public university administrators have an obligation to respect free speech rights."

In February, the university released a statement that denounced the allegations. “The assertion that the University of Minnesota has ‘downgraded’ or ‘relegated’ the upcoming event featuring Ben Shapiro based on ideological or any other reasons is patently false[…] The University is committed to free speech.”

Instagram Launched New Camera Effects, So You Can Step-Up Your Thirst Traps Even More

Instagram is really trying to help us sharpen our selfie game. After conceptualizing video chats on the social media platform and rolling out the highly-anticipated IGTV, Instagram outdid its own updates by launching new camera effects (because Insta is the kind of extra we aspire to be).

Bustle reports that Insta basically collaborated with your favorite celebrities, YouTube personalities and influencers to create some new camera effect designs, which essentially means you can support your celeb icons and simultaneously add cute, new effects to your latest pics and videos. After all, we’re always looking for a way to optimize our stan-ships. (Or is the proper term stanning?)

Ariana Grande, Liza Koshy and Baby Ariel are just a few of the accounts that created these star-studded effects. Organizations like BuzzFeed and the NBA also pushed out some designs, according to Elite Daily.

With all the new effects to choose from, we have a few applicable ways to incorporate these effects in your daily selfie routine—because selfies can be a healthy part of our self-care regimen, too.

Liza Koshy’s quirky eyebrow and mustache applique seem like a natural selection for a funny pic of your dog, once you finally bribe him with enough treats to stop moving (it’s okay, Scruffy doesn’t take your social media brand seriously, but we do). However, Koshy’s design could also fit well into your ironic thirst trap photos.

You know what we’re talking about: those thirst traps that you don’t want to come across as blatant thirst traps. But, it’s 2018 and you don’t need a comical hijinks to excuse your seductive photos. If you’re filling yourself and you want your Insta-bae to appreciate your pic, then just take the damn pic.

Once you get over your thirst trap timidness, you can embrace your fullest picture-taking form to produce truly thirst-inducing images—with the help of BuzzFeed’s “Oh Yes!” effects.

It might be branded as a culinary-themed effect, but we’re about pushing boundaries. (That’s what these effects are meant for, right?) And, you don’t need to fake being humble about your sexy pics. You shouldn’t be modest about your thirst trapping ways.

Seriously, Halsey sets thirst traps, and who wouldn’t want to be more like Halsey? You shouldn’t be modest about your thirst baiting ways—just like Instagram shouldn’t be modest about the low-key camera-effect-turned-match-making updates.

With these new effects, Insta is basically a wing woman for single Insta users. (Don’t worry: the Insta AI will be our flower-droid when Aubrey Plaza ~finally~ recognizes our existence and blocks us marries us.)

To avoid thirst trapping burnout (it happens to the best of us), you can use Baby Ariel's adorably soft effect to your selfies. (Because our normal portrait pics need some love as well.)

If you want to test out any of the aforementioned effects or any of the unmentioned effects, just tap the camera icon at the top left corner of your screen, hit the face icon once you’re in the live-photo op screen, then choose your favorite new effect. Granted, if you want to utilize these celebrity-crafted effects, you need to follow the account that created the camera effect. So, you can use Grande’s adorable effect unless you support her (or at least her Instagram ventures).

Forbes notes that there is a loophole that allows you to at least temporarily use the camera effect without following the respective creator of the effect. If you click the “try it” option under the respective username, you can test out the latest camera effect for your latest obligatory food-photo-op and beyond.

Your Guide to Finding the Right Work Environment for You

$

Finding a job can be tough — so sometimes you might apply for many jobs without thinking much about how you’d fit into the company culture or even without thinking about finding a job that is a fit for you.

But Val Nelson, a coach for introverts, strongly recommends thinking about your own personality traits as you search for a job. She learned the hard way that personality should not be overlooked during the job search. Working a job that isn’t a good fit can lead to burnout.

“We [not only] need to consider our strengths and interests when choosing a path but also need to look closely at what kind of environment draws out our strengths and what will hinder that flow,” Nelson says. “Too many women forget to think about the right environment and end up burning out, then blaming themselves when it’s just a bad fit.”

Finding your fit might seem overwhelming, but making it a part of your job search is simpler than you might think.

Understand your personality

Before you identify a work environment that is a good fit for your personality, you first want to gain a better understanding of your personality.

RELATED: 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Accepting A Job Offer

Nelson didn’t know what was causing her to feel drained after work each day until she took the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator and realized she’s an introvert. She says that knowing whether you’re an introvert or extrovert is one of the most important personality traits to understand.

Generally speaking, Nelson says introverts tend to thrive in work environments where they have time to think before speaking, they can work in a quiet environment (cubicles? No thanks!), the team values authenticity, and meetings have a clear purpose.

While introverts might dread participating in tons of teambuilding activities and working in a social, louder environment, extroverts might look for a work environment that emphasizes teambuilding and social interaction.

You could also be an ambivert — someone who is in the middle of the introvert-extrovert spectrum. Nelson says ambiverts should look for work environments that provide both alone time and a collaborative environment.

Another important aspect of your personality to think about when searching for the right work environment is your creativity. If you’re creative, innovative and eager to come up with new ideas, you might consider working at a start-up. However, many types of workplaces value creativity — that’s why it’s important to do your research on the company throughout your job search process.

Learn about the company

Emily Miethner, founder and CEO of FindSpark, stresses that you should learn everything you can about the companies you’re interested in working for.

“My biggest job hunt advice is to spend more time on less applications,” Miethner says. “What you should spend your time doing is reading everything you can about the company, looking across social media channels, looking at other folks who work there, doing that digital research first to get a sense of what other people are saying, what they’re like and just trying to imagine yourself fitting in there.”

If, after you do your research, you think the company could be a fit, you’ll want to ask thoughtful questions during the interview process to see if you think you’d be able to be yourself there, Miethner says.

“When you’re interviewing for a job, you are also trying to figure out if it’s a good fit for you,” she says.

Two questions she suggests asking to help determine if the work environment will be a fit for you are, “How do the teams celebrate wins?” and “What does the company do to facilitate connections between team members?”

Miethner also suggests reaching out to people who work at the company or in the industry you’re interested in to schedule informational interviews. This way, you can learn about the work environment firsthand.

“If you’re really seriously considering a certain company, it’s a really good idea to actually talk to folks who actually work there,” Miethner says.

When reaching out to someone about an informational interview, she recommends reaching out to people who genuinely interest you (i.e. someone whose work you truly love), doing your research about the best way to reach out to them, and not being afraid to follow up if they don’t respond right away.

“Sending one message is like sending no message at all, so don’t be afraid to follow up on a different platform,” Miethner says. “Many people are nervous about following up. They don’t want to come across as annoying but most people will actually appreciate the follow-up.”

Maybe you reached out on LinkedIn but didn’t get a response. It’s OK to follow up via Twitter a week later if you notice the person is very active on Twitter. Email might be the most obvious choice for connecting with someone, Miethner says, but if you can’t find the person’s email address, you can look for other methods to reach out.

Consider the environment

If you’re creative and introverted, you might not love working in a large corporate environment that seems to have a very structured way of doing things. And if planners are your best friend and you love having clear procedures, you might not be a big fan of a work environment that is less set-in-stone and emphasizes always thinking of the next big thing, such as a start-up. However, every company is different, so it’s important to do your digital research, ask questions and try to imagine yourself working there.

It’s also important to think about who you’ll be working with. Miethner points out that making sure your personality meshes well with your boss is especially important. However, this can be hard to gauge before you’re hired — first impressions aren’t always accurate, especially in an interview environment.

For Claudia Dimuro, the team she worked with had a big impact on how she felt about her job.

“My first job out of college, I had a team that was very supportive and open to questions.  They understood I was new to the job, and I worked extremely hard in order to improve my work on a daily basis,” Dimuro says. “After my promotion, however, I was transferred to a team that was the complete opposite: they were demeaning and spoke badly of each other and of me.”

Your work space might also be an important factor. Maybe your personality is well-suited for an open-office environment or cubicles, or maybe you’d prefer to have a space that feels somewhat private.

Get another opinion

As much as we think we know ourselves, sometimes it can be difficult to recognize if a work environment is a good fit, and sometimes we might ignore red flags or aspects that bother us because, hello, we just really want to find a job.

However, Nelson advises that it can be valuable to take self-assessment tests or get a second opinion. If you’re getting a second opinion, make sure that person wants to help you find what’s right for you based on your personality, not your skills alone, she says.

Find your place

Maybe you’ve found a job and based on all of your research, you think it seems like the right fit. Yay!

But what if you start working and begin to feel like maybe the job isn’t the right fit for you?

Miethner suggests making an effort to connect with more people at the company and even reaching out to the human resources department to see if they have any recommendations of people you could meet.

“Especially if you’re at a larger company, maybe you haven’t connected with people yet who you feel very connected with,” she says. “You can then see if it’s really not a culture fit or if you just haven’t found your people yet.”

And if it’s not really a culture fit? That’s not your fault, Nelson says.

“If you find yourself in a job where it’s not working out, don’t blame yourself,” she says. “Over time, you’ll see the red flags more easily.”

When looking for a job, ask yourself, “could I be myself here? Could I thrive in this environment?” On paper, a job might be perfect — but that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect fit for you. Finding your fit — not the job that you think you should want or that other people think you should want — is what’s important.

After A Number Of Scandals, Scott Pruitt Has Resigned As EPA Chief

President Donald Trump announced in a tweet on Thursday that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt was resigning. In his resignation letter, Pruitt cited the "unrelenting attacks" on him and his family, which he admitted have "taken a sizable toll."

Pruitt also praised Trump throughout the letter. "My desire in service to you has always been to bless you as you make important decisions for the American people," he wrote. "I believe you are serving as President today because of God's providence. I believe that same providence brought me into your service. I pray as I have served you that I have blessed you and enabled you to effectively lead the American people."

In his tweet, Trump returned the praise, adding that he'll "always be thankful" for Pruitt's work at the EPA.

Others weren't as pleased with Pruitt's months-long stint as administrator. According to CNN, he's been "embroiled in one ethics controversy after the next,"— the most recent being that he allegedly "held regular meetings to 'scrub,' alter or remove controversial events from his calendar." This prompted two Democratic congressman to call for an investigation into whether Pruitt committed a federal crime.

Pruitt was already facing a number of inquiries or reviews while at the EPA, mostly having to do with his practices — including taxpayer-funded first-class plane travel, a room rented from a lobbyist, and the installation of a $43,000 soundproof booth in his office.

According to The Washington Post, Pruitt was also the subject of reports alleging he "repeatedly enlisted subordinates to help him search for housing, book personal travel and even help search for a six-figure job for his wife."

For now, Pruitt's top deputy Andrew Wheeler will take control of the EPA.

TanaCon Was Such A Disaster, The Company That Organized It Is Facing A Lawsuit

Some fans of YouTuber Tana Mongeau are so upset with the way TanaCon turned out, they're discussing a class-action lawsuit against the event's organizers.

TanaCon was initially created to rival VidCon— the annual convention for YouTube creators and fans — after Mongeau was upset with the limitations VidCon was imposing on her. She partnered with a production company called Good Times, and the two parties eventually set TanaCon on the same street and same weekend as VidCon. The convention advertised Mongeau and a number of appearances from other YouTube creators — and more importantly — free general admission tickets.

But when the day of TanaCon came, everything seemed to be a disaster. Nearly everyone appeared to have the $65 ticket option, causing some to question the validity of the free tickets; people waited in line for five hours in the heat and sun without food or water; the Marriott hotel was not at all big enough for the attendees; and the event was eventually canceled.

Now, YouTuber Anamarie Olson is gathering defendants for a class-action lawsuit against Good Times. According to The Blast, she believes ticket holders should be given full refunds — including travel — and compensation for "mistreatment during the event."

"I started feeling less and less excited about the event because I had a feeling it would be very unorganized, but I hoped for the best," she told The Blast. "After waiting for about 5 hours in the sun, with no shade or water or food, a representative of Good Times made an announcement that the event was canceled for the day but would resume as scheduled Saturday with an additional location."

That never happened, though. As a result, she's currently in talks with the same firms suing Fyre Festival, and claims to have around 200 people in joining her in a lawsuit.

Popular YouTuber Shane Dawson is also unhappy. He was scheduled to make an appearance at the event and after it was canceled he called TanaCon the "worst decision I ever made." He released a documentary series to detail what specifically happened, and eventually revealed that Good Times' CEO signed a contract with a ticketing agent, Veeps, that would ultimately make Good Times responsible for any refunds. Those refunds are now estimated to be around $325,000.

Though the source of the money is currently unknown, the ticketing company announced on July 4 that refunds would be issued to those who reach out to Veeps.

A New York Principal Refused To Let The School's First-Ever Black Valedictorian Speak At Graduation, So The City's Mayor Stepped In

When Jaissan Lovett of Rochester, New York graduated from University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men, he became the first black valedictorian in his school's history. Like every other valedictorian before him, he prepared to give a speech at the commencement ceremony — but the opportunity was quickly shut down by the school's principal, Joseph Munno.

"[Munno] didn’t want to see the speech or what it said, nothing," Lovett said in an interview with The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. "He just said no."

There was one person who wanted to hear what Lovett had to say, though — the mayor of Rochester, Lovely Warren. Lovett was actually an intern for his office, and Warren encouraged him to give his speech at City Hall. Afterwards, she posted it on the city’s YouTube channel and shared it on Facebook and Twitter. The video quickly went viral.

"Unfortunately, Jaisaan’s school did not allow him to give his valedictorian speech," Warren says in the video. "For some reason, his school — in a country where freedom of speech is a constitution right, and the city of Frederick Douglass — turned his moment of triumph into a time of sorrow and pain."

She continued, "Jaisaan will never graduate from high school again. He will never get that moment back. This is not the time to punish a child because you may not like what he has to say."

Warren then gave the mic to Lovett, who took the time to thank his parents, siblings, and teachers for all the support throughout his time at UPrep. He also addressed his principal, who he apparently has clashed with in the past.

"To Mr. Munno, my principal, there’s a whole lot of things I’ve wanted to say to you for a long time… I’m here as the UPrep 2018 valedictorian to tell you that you couldn’t break me. I’m still here, and I’m still here strong."

He continued, "And after all these years, all this anger I’ve had toward you and UPrep as a whole, I realized I had to let that go in order to better myself. And I forgive you for everything I held against you."

After the video made the rounds on the internet, UPrep's Board of Trustees announced that they're looking into the situation with the principal.

According to CBS News, Lovett will attend Clark Atlanta University and study video game design on a full scholarship.

Ariana Grande Responded To Pete Davidson's Recently Resurfaced Manchester Joke

The Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande content continues. Unfortunately, this week's news from the quickly engaged couple isn't exactly as adorable as when Pete got all red in the face talking about Ariana on the Tonight Show, or Ariana dedicating an entire interlude to him on her new album. Instead, the pop singer is responding to a joke Pete made in 2017 about the terrorist attack at her Manchester concert of the same year.

At a stand-up show to benefit Puerto Rico, Pete supposedly joked that Ariana should know how famous she was after Manchester, because "Britney Spears didn't have a terrorist attack at her concert."

One of Ariana's fans expressed her disappointment over the situation on Twitter, prompting her to respond.

"this has been v tough & conflicting on my heart. he uses comedy to help ppl feel better ab how f-ed up things in this world are. we all deal w trauma differently," Grande replied. "I of course didn’t find it funny. it was months ago & his intention wasn’t/ is never malicious but it was unfortunate."

Pete is no stranger to attacks like the one in Manchester, though. His own father was killed in the terrorist attack in New York City on September 11, 2001. He frequently jokes about his situation in his comedy.

The joke about Manchester resurfaced after Charlotte Hodgson, the mother of one of the 22 victims from the terrorist attack, told the Mirror that it was "disgusting."

"We don’t need jokes about it, there have been plenty around, and it’s heartbreaking to hear every day," Hodgson said. "But for someone so famous to be doing it and now to be with Ariana, it’s outrageous. I think she would be horrified too."

6 Things You Need To Do The Summer Before Grad School

$

It might seem like one of the biggest transitions you’ve had to make in your early adult life is going from high school to college, but it’s the transition from undergrad to graduate school that’s the toughest. Whether you took a couple years in between to start working or you only have a summer separating the two, grad school can be a daunting, all-time-consuming feat.

As you anticipate the start of your first fall semester as a grad student, take advantage of the time you have now during the summer to make the transition as seamless as possible. Here are a few tips to get you started and improve both your productivity and wellbeing.

1. Travel while you still can

Summer is the ideal time for anyone to take some time off for a vacation, but it’s especially worthwhile for someone about to enter grad school, which is very demanding of a person’s time.

Treat this period as if it’s a semester abroad—whether you are going overseas or staying in the U.S. Take time for yourself to have fun, try new things in a different city or country and escape for a little while.

Sydney Post, a recent graduate of Emerson College, went straight from undergrad to grad school, so she used her summer in between to travel to the UK and try new hobbies. “I was lucky enough, financially speaking, that my parents told me that I didn't need to get a job that summer, so that helped a lot with having the time to have some fun. But I'd definitely recommend that people try and relax as much as possible, even if they are working, because grad school sucks up your free time in ways that college definitely did not!”

2. Make sure your finances are in check

Just like undergrad, graduate school can be an equally daunting financial undertaking, if not more so. Spend your free time this summer doing everything you can to set yourself up for financial stability.

Set up your financial aid so that you have a plan for paying off your grad school tuition. Put together a monthly budget plan if you don’t have one already, so that money staples like rent and food don’t become an issue for you. Think about ways you can make money, whether that’s during the summer or working as a research assistant for your grad school program.

3. Get organized for school

You might not be taking your annual trip to Staples with your parents like you did when you were young, but it’s still important that you start off the year on a good foot and stress-free.

Pick a workspace that allows you to focus on your assignments, whether that’s at a desk in your room, your favorite coffee shop or the library. Make your physical space clutter-free and stock up on any school supply essentials, including books, to avoid that hassle at the beginning of the year. Also, make sure that your digital devices, such as your laptop and cell phone, are organized so that you don’t have a hundred apps or files scattered across your screen.

Krysta Loftis, a Central Michigan University graduate who starts grad school in the fall, understands the importance of getting organized early. She says, “I know grad school is going to be tough, so I am preparing a space that is going to help me succeed. I think it's really important to go in strong, so you don't fall behind or become overwhelmed.”

4. Enjoy your freedom and relax

Who says that you necessarily have to do anything this summer? While vacations are nice, nothing beats an extended staycation with your family and friends close by.

Take the time to do the things that you truly enjoy, but won’t have much time for once school starts. Have you always wanted to take a class related to a hobby, like cooking or surfing? Ever wanted to binge five Netflix shows in a month? What about some light summer reading? Allowing time for yourself will put you in the headspace to get ready for the commitment that is grad school.

Lauryn Higgins, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, enjoyed her freedom during her last summer before school. “Truly take advantage of the free time you have, because as wonderful as continuing your education is, it’s a massive time commitment. I made a point to make more plans with friends, [and] visit my family who lived three hours away, because I knew I wouldn't be seeing them as much and overall just focused on myself by treating myself."

5. Get a head start on your career

Whether you worked a year or two prior to grad school or are starting immediately after undergrad, the summer prior is the perfect time to take charge of your career goals and start to boost your resume.

A summer internship will allow you to gain experience in your field, develop mentors in your senior coworkers and start to narrow down the aspects of your field that really make you tick. Unless it's a requirement for your master's degree, it's much harder to find time to intern during the year while juggling your course load. You'll likely have a greater chance of finding an appealing internship simply due to the fact that you've already graduated from college.

Additionally, there are endless opportunities during the summer to network with other professionals in your industry. Look up networking events hosted by your dream companies or Q&A's and general events in your field. You can go even more broad and find 20-somethings networking clubs for your city, where you'll meet people in several industries! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and broaden your circles early.

6. Secure your housing

You know where you'll be attending school, but where are you going to live?

Use this time to nail down an apartment, whether there are options for student housing for grad students, or you need to find a place elsewhere in your new city. You can join Facebook groups for your degree program, where people are likely posting leads about finding roommates.

If you are living fairly remote from campus, make sure that you have the tools to make that work. Will you need a car or bike? Are you close enough to public transportation? Can you schedule your day so that you don't have to make frequent trips back and forth from campus and waste time? These are all questions to consider as you decide where to live.

Before entering this new chapter in your life, there are different things you can do to prepare yourself that are both strategic and relaxing. Like with everything in life, it’s important to have balance. By setting yourself up for success and de-stressing at the same time, you will be better equipped to handle the highs and lows that come with grad school.

No official suits have been filed as of yet.

HC Wake-Up Call: Nearly 3,000 Separated Migrant Children In Custody, The Fight For The Next SCOTUS Nominee, & Trump's Montana Rally

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

HHS Reveals Higher-Than-Expected Number Of Migrant Children In Custody & Plans For Reunions

Nearly 3,000 children that have been separated from their parents after crossing the U.S. border are currently being held by the government, according to a new statement from Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. He had previously reported a lower number— 2,047 children — but he said the number is larger because of a court order that requires HHS to reunite all separated migrant children, not just those taken from their parents after the Trump administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect.

Azar also revealed his agency's plan to reunite children with their families: DNA tests. HHS will take a cheek swab of every child and then match them with a parent. The agency has until July 10 to reunite parents separated from children younger than 5, per an order from a federal judge in the Southern District of California. Children ages 5-17 have until July 26. Azar, however, has condemned these deadlines. He called them "extreme."

"We will comply even if those deadlines prevent us from conducting a standard or even a truncated vetting process," he said on Thursday.

President Trump Narrows SCOTUS Picks While Dems Fight For GOP Votes

According to NBC News, Trump has narrowed his list of contenders to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy after he retires. The president is reportedly considering three "serious" candidates: appeals court judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge and Amy Coney Barrett — all conservatives for the most part.

Vice President Pence met with Kavanaugh earlier this week, and sources told The Washington Post the session "went well." However, Trump reportedly has concerns about how his supporters will feel about Kavanaugh's past work for President George W. Bush. Read more about Kavanaugh, Kethledge, and Barrett here

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is still trying to appeal to the president, though. He wants Trump to repeat President Barack Obama's choice and nominate federal judge Merrick Garland, "as a way to unify the country,"a source told CNN. Other Democrats, on the other hand, are focusing less on Trump's pick and more on the senators who will be voting for him or her. GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins have stated their opposition to an anti-abortion nominee, so liberal group Demand Justice is airing ads in their home states, in addition to those of other moderate Republicans.

The president is expected to make the announcement on Monday.

Trump Holds A Campaign-Style Rally In Montana

On Thursday night, Trump traveled to Great Falls, Montana to campaign for Republican state auditor Matt Rosendale, who's running for U.S. senate against Democratic Senator Jon Tester. Though Trump addressed the race — calling a vote for Tester "a vote for Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and the new leader of the Democrat party, Maxine Waters,"— he also spoke about his relationship with Russia, next week's NATO summit, and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump didn't hold back against the press, either — using terms such as "fake news,""bad people," and "so damn dishonest,"— despite a gunman killing five journalists at a Maryland newspaper just one week ago. He also launched attacks against the Justice Department, Hillary Clinton, and George H.W. Bush, among others. "We will say, I will give you $1 million to your favorite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you are an Indian and let's see what she does," Trump said about Senator Elizabeth Warren.

YouTube Star Tiffany Alvord On Her New EP & The Heartbreaking Fan Interaction That Inspired Her Advice Column (Exclusive Q&A)

Singer and songwriter Tiffany Alvord found success posting covers on YouTube at only 15 years old. Her following has since grown to 3.1 million subscribers, with over 642 million views on her channel—and she isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Now 25 years old, Tiffany has released three original albums, starred in the film School Spirits and the AT&T Hello Lab series Guilty Party, and was nominated for “Favorite Viral Music Artist” at the 2017 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Her Campus sat down with Tiffany to talk about her musical inspirations, the importance of connecting with her fans, and her advice for other aspiring artists.

Her Campus: How did you know you wanted to pursue music?

Tiffany: Originally I actually loved acting, and I wanted to be an actress. I found community theater, and growing up I always sang in church and in musicals. When I was 10, I realized one of my biggest passions was writing. I loved writing songs, and to write songs I had to sing songs—but I never really thought of myself as a singer. So, basically, it was a transition where I wanted to do acting, but then I found YouTube and thought, “Hey, I like to sing. I could put my songs up here.” So I more consider myself a songwriter, and singing is just part of it.

HC: What was it like finding so much success singing covers on YouTube, and then finally being able to record and release your own original music?

Tiffany: When I first started on YouTube, I would put covers out so that I could gain a new audience and get more exposure. But after every two or three covers I would upload an original—it would be an acoustic in my room of a song that I had written. After a couple of originals, people would say, “oh I want to buy this” or “oh I want to get this”, and so there was a demand. Which is kind of backwards because usually artists will be like here’s my original music, this is who I am. But I kind of built my fanbase, and then they were the ones that were like, “hey, I want to buy your original music,” which was really cool.

The first album I did I flew back to Ohio and a production company helped put it together. But it was so exciting releasing songs because it was a process start to finish to actually get my originals produced, and it was great for people to be like, “yay! I’ve been listening to this for however long and now I finally get to have a CD.”

HC: What was it like to be so successful on YouTube at such a young age, and have so many people wanting to listen to and buy your music?

Tiffany: It was very surreal because I feel like for so many years, every week, I’d just be in my room by myself uploading a video. So I would be like, okay I’m going to film, and I’m in front of the camera talking to an inanimate object and it’s not responding. But when you upload it’s like, oh cool here are these people, and these comments and these users. But I feel like it didn’t really hit me until I started touring and traveling and I was like, oh wait, these are real people. Online they’re numbers, and I hadn’t met these people, so it didn’t seem real. But then I realized that my music actually makes a difference, and this person was crying when they met me but I didn’t actually know them. It was just a surreal experience. It makes me feel so humbled and honored that people actually listen to my music and care about what I want to say.

HC: It’s so cool to be able to have such an impact on people’s lives. You have your column, “Ask Anny,” where you answer questions from your fans. Can you talk a little bit about that and why it’s so important to be able to have that type of interaction with them, too?

Tiffany: In this day and age there’s such a need for connection and having someone who you trust who can listen and give advice, even if it’s just someone who hears you and listens to what you’re saying. For Ask Anny, early on in my YouTube career, someone had messaged me and said, “I was wanting to commit suicide and I was going to do it. I was going to jump off this bridge, but then I decided to listen to music and one of your songs came on. It made me so happy and I realized I couldn’t do it.”

So realizing that there’s so many issues and so many people going through challenging times, I wanted people to have a place where they could ask a question, be vulnerable, and just be heard. I don't necessarily have all the answers, but I’ve been through enough life experiences where I can give my feedback and my opinion, or at least just be a friend. I think everyone just needs a friend and a listening ear.

HC: Who is your biggest musical influence?

Tiffany: There’s so much good music right now. But I know for my first few albums, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift were my go-tos for who I loved and who I listened to all the time. I always blank on this question because there’s so many people I love and I feel like I just go on Spotify and I’ll do Radio or listen to New Music Friday. And I’ll save all these people to my favorites that I don’t actually know... But more recently, I love Selena Gomez and what’s she’s been doing. And Ella Vos, I love her music. James TW is a really good singer/songwriter, and Sabrina Carpenter and Phoebe Ryan, too.

HC: If you could make the choice, out of your favorite singers, who would you collaborate on a song with?

Tiffany: Sara Bareilles. I’d probably want to collab with her because I think we could write an awesome song, and she’s got the singer/songwriter vibe. I love her style.

HC: What’s next for you with your music, acting or anything else you have planned?

Tiffany: I’m so pumped because I did a web series last year called Guilty Party and it’s going for a second season, so next month I’ll be filming that which I’m super excited about. That’s with YouTube and AT&T Hello Lab.

Then as far as music goes, I’m wrapping up my EP.  I’ll have an EP of five new original songs coming out, so I’ll have new music videos and I’ll be touring. Just working on getting that in motion so I can meet fans and sing new music because it’s been a sec. In the meantime, I’m taking acting classes and trying to keep up with posting YouTube videos and consistently posting content to keep the fans happy.

HC: If you could give a piece of advice to any of your fans that want to pursue music or acting, what would you tell them?

Tiffany: My biggest piece of advice is to know why you’re doing what you do. I think a lot of the time, especially in this day and age, people think they want to be a YouTuber because everyone else is doing it, or they get free stuff, or because they make money. But you have to be passionate about what you’re doing. I think having the “why” behind what you’re doing will help guide you, especially when things get hard. Because it is hard and it is a lot of work, and I think people don’t realize that.

Be happy and enjoy what you’re doing and have fun. I think a lot of the time it’s easy to get caught up in feeling like, “I need to do this because it’s my dream,” instead of really enjoying what you’re doing. Love what you do, have fun, and make sure you’re always doing it because you’re passionate about it. Dream big, but also enjoy it!

Kylie Jenner Had A Luxury House Built For Her Dogs & I'm Jealous

Well, I feel pretty broke right now because Kylie Jenner just showed off the fancy-schmancy house she built for her dogs.

Though all pet lovers can relate to Kylie spoiling her pups like babies, we still can’t help but feel a little bit of envy over the canines’ new crib. In a Snapchat video, the 20-year-old businesswoman narrates her excitement over the near completion of her dogs’ new home. "You guys, my dog house is almost done. How cute,” she says. “It’s like a guest house.”

She gleefully shows viewers the outside of the adorable cottage (which includes a porch!) and gawks over the fact that the dogs' house will include air conditioning and heating amenities.

Kylie’s new doghouse 7/3/18

A post shared by Kylie Jenner (@kyliesnapchat) on

Though Jenner’s generosity to her favorite furry pals does seem a tad overboard, given her past track record when it comes to spending big bucks on the ones she loves (i.e. her daughter Stormi Webster’s whopping $625 Gucci baby carrier), we would not expect anything less from King Kylie, tbh.

Two of Kylie’s dogs (she has seven in total), her greyhounds Norman and Bambi, have actually become pretty famous since first gracing the star’s Instagram in 2016. Kylie has made her affection for her pooches pretty clear over the years, even sharing a pic on Norman and Bambi's IG account, where the dogs are seen clutched to her chest, with the caption "Mom Loves Us."

Considering the house she's built, we can definitely tell.

A UK School's Message For People Who Were Against Their Refugee Scholarship Was A Real Elegant 'Go F-ck Yourself' To Intolerance

The British university, The University of Reading, announced a scholarship for refugees just last month, and they have no time for critics of the program.

According to Mashable, The University of Reading is offering 14 scholarships to local refugees. The university partnered with the Reading Refugee Support Group and Reading University’s Students’ Union to develop and spread awareness about the program.

"The launch of these scholarships is another practical step the University has taken to welcome and integrate all people into our communities, our activities and our culture,” a professor at the university, Robert Van de Noort, said to Mashable

The college told critics of the program to “jog on” via Twitter this week. For those not familiar with British slang,IFLScience said in American English it roughly means “get lost” or "go f-ck yourself." The internet promptly fell in love with this response — and the simple, no nonsense response to intolerance.

Considering the current debates surrounding refugees and immigration, the bold acceptance of refugees at their university is something to applaud.

Jessica Alba Says She's Dealt With Sexual Harassment Since She Was 12 & It's Seriously Distressing

Jessica Alba is opening up about her own #MeToo story in a powerful interview with CNN, where she discussed her interaction with Harvey Weinstein and thoughts on the movement.

“It’s about time,” she told CNN regarding #MeToo, which went viral after allegations against Harvey Weinstein surfaced. “I think things have been imbalanced for way too long."

Alba has interacted with Weinstein in the past—his former studio The Weinstein Company produced her 2005 film Awake—but says she was never assaulted by him because she was “never in a situation where it was just one on one.”

The actress and entrepreneur, who has been in Hollywood for almost 25 years, did reveal that even though she didn't face this with Weinstein, she has experienced her own share of sexual harassment and discrimination along the way. "As a young actress growing up in the business, you just accepted that that’s the way you were going to be treated,” she said. “[There were] lots of different circumstances. I mean, I’ve been doing this since I was 12. Imagine what that’s like.”

Though distressing, this is not at all surprising. According to a survey conducted by Stop Street Harassment earlier this year, most women come face-to-face with sexual harassment during their pre-teen and teen years, with 16 percent experiencing it for the first time between the ages of 11 and 13.

Being that Alba fell within this spectrum herself, she is utilizing her past to teach an important lesson to her daughters. "I've been in lots of different situations and that's why it's important for me to talk to my girls about them, knowing you have control over your body and over situations you want to put yourself in," she said. "There are warning signs and there's that feeling in your stomach and you have to listen to that feeling. It’s probably going to be different talking to my son about that stuff."

Zac Efron Is Showing Off Dreads In His Latest Instagram Pic & I'm Stuck In A State of Facepalm

Zac Efron is like our best friend’s older brother who we secretly crush on. And he's always been America’s collective affable bro—but I had no idea he’d be that kind of bro. Ya know, the kind of dudebro that makes me roll my eyes a little bit.

On Thursday, the 30-year-old actor shared a picture of himself on Instagram with a head full of dreadlocks. That’s right, Zefron has white man dreads. Take a look for yourself...

Just for fun 🤘

A post shared by Zac Efron (@zacefron) on

To quote a fan in the comments, “HIS HEAD IS NOT IN THE GAME.”

So why is this such a big deal? Wearing dreadlocks is most common in the black community- a symbol worn by Kenyan freedom fighters and Rastafarians from Jamaica. The hairstyle is sometimes used as a scapegoat for discrimination against people of color, reclaimed as a source of pride similar to the afro, according to Syreeta McFadden of The Guardian. As Josie Pickens noted in Ebony, it's especially disrespectful of white men to wear dreadlocks because black people who historically wore them fought for freedom from oppression by white men.

Apparently, Zac has been on a beach vacation in Hawaii for the past several weeks. He’s seen with the dreads in another picture from a few weeks ago, but they were noticeably missing in a video posted on the Fourth of July.

Breaks over. Back on the grind.

A post shared by Zac Efron (@zacefron) on

Happy 4th of July everyone 💥 Stay safe 🇺🇸😎🤙

A post shared by Zac Efron (@zacefron) on

It’s unclear whether or not he still has the dreads, but the impact is a little more permanent than hairstyles. Many, including some in the comments of the picture, have been accusing him of cultural appropriation.

Zac isn't the first celebrity to receive backlash for choosing a potentially insensitive hairstyle. Justin Bieber had some white boy dreads of his own back in 2016 and sparked some conversation about dreadlocks not being just a hairstyle. Several members of the Kardashian family have gotten some flack for adopting typically black hairstyles as well—cornrows, bantu knots and others.

Maybe the faux pas was unintentional, as cultural appropriation sometimes can be, but regardless, maybe Zac (and all of us) should be a lot more cautious about what the style choices we make really mean. Here’s hoping our bro can learn a lesson from this.
