I Did A Thing: I’m Pregnant & My Family Insists I Live At Home Until My BF Graduates, But I Don’t Want To. Am I Being Selfish?

I Did A Thing is our weekly advice column where the Her Campus editorial team helps you out when you ruin your own life (hey, we've been there). Email advice@hercampus.com for any and everything you need help with. We’ll answer you (anonymously!) on hercampus.com so we can all learn, together. We’ve got your back.

@pregnantandconfused: I am a senior in college and I am pregnant. I will give birth to a baby girl in July. My boyfriend has been super supportive and has decided to stick around and I will be graduating in August with my bachelors degree in political science and psychology. Sounds like we might actually make it work, right? Wrong. My boyfriend still has another two years of school to complete and our families are insisting that I move back home to raise the baby at my mother’s house until he graduates. The problem is, home is an hour away from where he goes to school. We have plans to see each other every weekend but I still don't think that gives him enough time with the baby. My ideal situation would be to move in together and start our lives right when the baby is born, not wait for two years. So tell me, am I being selfish for wanting to move in with him? And how can I keep our relationship strong if we really are separated for two years?

@helpmehc: Being pregnant isn’t easy, and when you also have to factor in being a college student, things can quickly get a 1000000x more complicated. While it’s understandable that you want to be able to live with the father of your baby and not be apart for two years, it may actually be the best idea to move back home and raise the baby at your mom’s house until your boyfriend graduates.

I can already hear you groaning, but here’s the thing: you know the saying it takes a village? Well, that will never ring more true than after you have a baby. Moving in with your boyfriend means you will most likely take on the biggest chunk of time when it comes to caring for your child. Though he’ll be there with you after classes each day, there will be times when he’ll be too focused on getting through his classes in order to graduate and may not pay as much attention to you and the baby as you thought he might. Then you’ll also need to consider the fact that he’ll most likely need to get a job in order to support the three of you, leaving little to no time at home with your and the baby. You’ll start to feel as though you’re carrier the heavier burden when it comes to your child, and it will cause you to resent him.

I say, move back in with your mom. Let her help you as much as she’s willing to so that you can also have a chance at jumpstarting your career—that’s what you went to school for after all, right? Set up a schedule that works for you and your boyfriend to make sure you’re getting adequate amount of time together, ensuring he’s spending as much time as he can (and should) with the baby. Once he’s finished with school, then the two of you can figure out the next steps to building a home together with your little family. But until then, what may be best for you and the baby is to look to your family for support. Trust me, the day-to-day is always tougher on a young mom and you’re going to need all the help, love and support you can get. Right now, your priority should be you and your baby, making sure you become the successful woman I’m sure you hope to be, who doesn’t need to ever rely on any man, because you always have to be prepared for anything.

Three Youtubers Reportedly Died After Falling Over A Waterfall In Canada

Three Canadian YouTube stars died after they fell over a waterfall in Canada.

Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh and Megan Scraper were travel vloggers for the YouTube channel High On Life. Gamble and Lyakh founded the channel with a friend from high school, Parker Heuser, in 2012 to document their explorations of exotic locations while promoting brands and destinations. Scraper was Lyakh’s girlfriend and she participated in some of the group’s projects.

On Tuesday, Gamble, Lyakh, and Scraper were hiking near Squamish, near the top of Shannon Falls. The group decided to go into one of the nearby pools for a swim, when all of a sudden, Scraper lost her footing and fell into the current. Lyakh and Gamble dove into the current to save her but were swept into the current themselves, reports NYMag.

According to BBC, the waterfalls in the Shannon Falls region are among the highest in British Columbia, reaching 1,009ft (335m) at their highest point.

A video from 2014 features the High on Life team performing stunts near a waterfall, while warning their viewers that this stunt should not be attempted by amateurs.

According to CBC News, Lyakh and Gamble had also been sentenced to a week in prison in 2017 for stunts they had pulled at Yosemite, including riding a bicycle outside of the roadway in Death Valley

On Friday, the team behind High On Life released a video statement about the deaths of their colleagues. “There are truly no words that can be said to ease the pain and devastation that we are going through right now. They were three of the warmest, kindest, most driven and outgoing people that you could ever meet and the world has lost a great deal of light with their passing.”

High On Life has over 500,000 subscribers to their channels. Fans and friends of the vloggers shared their condolences online.

In their statement, the team also emphasized that they would continue to document their travel adventures, as Gamble and Lyakh would have wanted, claiming, “They lived every single day to its fullest; they stood for positivity, courage, and living the best life that you can […] As tragic as their loss is, their message lives on through us all and it is now our responsibility to keep that message going.”

A Former Navy SEAL Has Reportedly Died Attempting To Rescue The Group Of Kids Trapped In A Cave

A former Thai Navy SEAL has died after attempting to deliver oxygen tanks to assist in the rescue of 12 young boys and their soccer coach who became trapped in a cave during a heavy flood in Thailand on June 23, The Washington Post reports.

In hopes of buying the rescuers more time, former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Kunan volunteered for a diving expedition to bring oxygen tanks to the cave for divers attempting to bring supplies to the team, but was reportedly unable to complete the mission. While placing the oxygen canisters, Sgt. Kunan lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen and the emergency response team was unable to revive him.

The Guardian reported that Thai Navy SEALs acknowledged the loss early this morning, telling reporters, “His effort and determination will always remain in the hearts of all divers. May you rest in peace and we will accomplish this mission as you had wished.”

According to reports from CNN, rescuers originally believed that conditions in the cave were stable enough that the team would be able to stay there for several weeks —possibly even months — until the floods had subsided and it was safe to rescue them.

However, in a recent announcement, Thai Navy SEAL chief Rear Adm. Aphakorn Yoo-kongkaew told CNN that this was no longer the case, stating, “We can no longer wait for all conditions (to be ready) because of the oppressive situation," referring to how the oxygen levels in the cave were becoming dangerously low, threatening the lives of those trapped.

At this time, rescuers have taken a step back to regroup before continuing their efforts, hoping to quickly develop a plan that will allow them to rescue the trapped team without risking further lives. With over 1,000 volunteers currently aiding the operation, according to the BBC, officials hope that they will be able to execute a safe and successful rescue without experiencing further losses.

How To Use Color Correcting Concealer Like You Actually Know What You're Doing

$

June was LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and Acne Awareness Month, which meant you were probably trying to use rainbow face stickers to conveniently cover up your blemishes. Instead of using stickers and gems to make literal art on your face, you can now use the full range of the color spectrum in your makeup collection to conceal your acne, dark circles and student loans. Well, you can’t hide your student loans (or hide from them for that matter), but your color correcting concealers skills can help you momentarily forget they exist.

Don’t worry. If you’ve been aimlessly following those Insta beauty tutorials on using color correcting products and finding that it just isn’t working for your specific face—because not everyone looks like a flawless Insta model before they start their makeup routine—then we can help walk you through the world of color correcting.

Green color correcting concealer

The only explanation for why Shrek was somehow a pore-less, pimple-free prince in his titular film—despite living in a humid AF swamp that is basically synonymous with frizzy hair and blemished skin—is the fact that his green complexion concealed his acne.

Seeing as opposite colors basically counteract their complementary hues, you don’t have to be an ogre to hid your pimples. Because pimples are typically red from their simultaneous inflammation, green works to cover up that redness and makes your acne virtually undetectable.

And color correcting's not just for acne—if you have redness from rosacea or a birthmark and you want to cover it up, you can also use your amateur artistry skills to cover that redness with a green color correcting concealer.

Yellow color correcting concealer

Yellow and purple are opposite of each other on the color wheel, which means you can use yellow color correcting concealer on top of those old acne and hyperpigmentation marks that have been haunting your face since April.

Because your older pimples are less likely to be engorged with puss and sebum, they’re going to be less red, seeing as the skin around the pimple becomes less swollen and angry as it heals. Since your scarlet skin sores become less scarlet as they heal, a green color concealer might be too noticeable underneath your foundation and other face products.

Cosmopolitan notes that yellow color correcting concealers can also work to cover up any darker shadows, particularly dark under eye circles, on olive and medium skin tones.

Lavender color correcting concealer

It’s only natural that lavender would then work to counterbalance yellow tones. If you have yellow undertones, lavender color correcting products can help your skin look more vibrant, refreshed and naturally awake (even if you haven’t slept because you were preoccupied with a late-night, optional but totally necessary, Netflix bender).

If you have chronic or hereditary dark circles (thanks, Mom), they can make your eyes look older than they actually are, but lavender color correcting concealers can combat this sallowness.

Orange (and variant shades) color correcting concealers

If you have a medium skin tone, you might want a citrus-y namesake to pulp those dark circles. Although orange color correcting concealers are designed to hide dark circles, pink and light peach can have the same effect on lighter skin tones.

If you aren’t sure if you should use a pink vs. a light peach color corrector to conceal your perpetual sleeplessness, check your undertones. If you have light skin and cool undertones, a pink corrector might be best. If you have light skin and warm undertones, then a light peach color corrector would complement your skin.

Whereas, if you have light skin and neutral undertones, then you might gravitate toward the aforementioned yellow color correcting concealer, or you can mix a concoction of pink and light peach color correctors. After all, you can be an innovative, self-proclaimed makeup artist.

If you have a darker skin tone, a dark peach, dark orange or a red will suit your skin tone. Still, the rules of using the perf shade of orange-y color corrector still boils down to what your undertones are.

Though orange-toned color correctors are amazing for dark under-eye circles, you can also use these color correcting concealers to cover your five o’clock shadow. If you have some stray hairs on your lip line, a naturally growing beard or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), orange color correctors can help cover any stray hairs and residual five o’clock shadow.

While you might be tempted to slather the area under your eyes with orange color correcting concealers (or similar hues), you only need to use this dark-circle-exiling formula sparingly. If you apply too much of the orange (or any shade of color correcting concealer), it can be counterproductive and actually further emphasize whatever blemish, tattoo or vein you were trying to conceal. According to Ulta, it’s better to use less product when it comes to color correcting concealers.

Conversely, having an excessive amount of color correcting concealer on your face could make the fullest of full-coverage foundation null—because the color from these corrective products can show through your foundations or actually mix with your foundation to make your face look like a muddied rainbow. Granted, that could be the next look.

Although color correcting products are concealers, avoid applying any of these products in a triangle under your eyes, like you would with your preferred flesh-toned concealers. Nevertheless, different brands have a variety of different shades of each of these main color correcting concealers.

Ready to shop for color correcting concealers? While brands like NYX and LA Cosmetics sell traditional highly-pigmented color correcting concealers, Becca Cosmetics takes a different approach to color correcting concealer options and offers a redder concealer as well as a violet concealer.

5 Things That Don’t Matter on Your College Applications

Your college application should showcase your best qualities as a well-rounded, open-minded student. With that in mind, it might be tempting to crowd your application with everything under the sun that you’ve been involved with. Unfortunately, that strategy is usually counterintuitive. For the best chance at acceptance, you have to prioritize and choose the parts of your life that your prospective college will be the most interested in. We’ve talked to college counselors and collegiettes around the country to bring you a comprehensive listof what not to include on your college applications—as well as some advice on what is appropriate to submit.

1. Don’t include: Anything from before high school

Unless you did something truly exceptional in your formative years, like starting a charity in elementary school or performing at Carnegie Hall in middle school, you don’t need to include any achievements from before high school. An easy way to clean up your college application is to remove outdated information that does not reflect the person you are now, such as old grades or minor awards.

Sarah Duffy, a senior at Trinity College, notes that your most recent activities are the most appealing to colleges. “I was always told not to include activities/experiences that occurred prior to high school, or even before sophomore year,” she says. “Colleges are much more interested in the stuff you’re currently doing!”

Do include:Activities from ninth grade and beyond

Colleges are typically interested with your activities starting with ninth grade. If you started an activity in middle school and continued it through high school, it should be okay to include—as long as it’s still relevant to your life. If you’re not sure about a specific activity, don’t be afraid to shoot your college counselor an email. They are there to answer your questions!

2. Don’t include: Unnecessarily big words

It might be tempting to use fancy words to make yourself look smart, but if you wouldn’t normally use it in writing or conversation, it’s not a good idea. College admissions committees have read thousands of applications—hence, they can tell when you’re faking your image. It’s good to have a large vocabulary that you can use naturally, but if you don’t, make sure you don’t force it.

Anna Ivey, founder of Ivey Admissions Consulting and former Dean of Admissions at University of Chicago Law School, notes that big words don’t benefit you and can even hurt your chances of being admitted. “Big words don’t help you, so use them in moderation, if at all,” she says. “Admissions officers appreciate clear, direct writing. Precision matters, though. Is the word you’re choosing the perfect one for what you’re trying to convey? You’re applying to college, so you’re expected to have a good grasp of vocabulary. There’s no need to get fancy just for the sake of being fancy, though. That usually just makes your writing worse, not better.”

Do include: Concise, accurate wording

Ivey reminds you to choose the right word, not the big word. Keep that in mind when you’re writing your essays.

3. Don’t include: Leisure activities

If you enjoy knitting in your spare time, that’s great. But unless you’ve taken initiative and started a knitting club, or donated your knitted socks to a charity, it’s just not important enough to include on your college application. You need to choose activities that showcase your best qualities, which should include more than simple participation.

Do include: The Core Four

Anna Ivey gives you important criteria on how to pick the activities that matter. “Try to pick activities that demonstrate one or more of the Core Four: Passion, Talent, Initiative, and Impact,” she says. “Just signing up for activities, or just showing up, doesn’t count for much. Continuity helps, too. If it’s an activity you suddenly picked up right before you applied, that’s a bit transparent.”

Keep the Core Four that Ivey mentions in mind when you’re picking activities to include. That way, you’re putting your best foot forward. If you’re applying to a special programat a university, you may need to alter your activities list to fit the qualities that the program is looking for. For example, if it’s a vocal technique program, you don’t want to fill your resume with awards from science fairs. Similarly, if it’s an engineering program, you don’t want to include an audio file of your musical theater performance.

4. Don’t include: Too many personal details

Context is important. If you’re working two part-time jobs while attending high school to help support your family, you might not have as many extracurricular activities as other potential applicants. Colleges need to have that context so they don’t write you off without understanding your circumstances beforehand. Despite that, there is a point where personal detail is simply too much. Unfortunately, a bad break-up can’t excuse you from a lack of extracurriculars or poor grades. You need to determine how much context is too much.

Do include: Appropriate personal information

Ivey shares her tips on deciding how much personal information to include. “It’s fine to include personal and sensitive details in applications if it gives the rest of your application context,” she says. “That includes tricky family situations like illness, divorce, or drug problems and recovery. Everything you submit is confidential, and admissions officers have seen it all. You won’t shock them. Don’t treat your application as therapy, though. The key question is always: does this give my academics, accomplishments, or activities important context? Will an admissions officer be missing an important part of my story without this information? This is about context; you don’t get extra points just because you suffered in some way and someone else didn’t.”

Be mindful of how much sensitive information you include in an application. As Ivey says, don’t do it for “extra points,” but to frame your image and activities with necessary context. If you’re not exactly sure what that means for your personal situation, talk with a guidance counselor at your high school. They can give you an answer that’s tailored to you.

Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth College, notes that your family should not be the star of your application. “While your family may be inspirational and motivating for you, make sure that your college application focuses on you and the image you want yourself to be represented as,” she says. In other words, you can include personal information about your family situation, but be sure that your application always comes back to yourself and what you have done. In this scenario, it’s okay to be selfish!

5. Don’t include: Too many extra materials

Often, college applications will have an area to submit extra materials that you’d like the admissions officers to see. It can be difficult to understand what colleges are looking for in this section. While your first instinct might be to upload every certificate you’ve ever gotten, hold yourself back.

Do include: Extra materials that add depth and value

If you do use the extra materials section, you should have a good reason. Ivey notes that extra materials should showcase talent. “If you’re on the fence about whether to submit extra materials, don’t,” she says. “Extra materials are meant to showcase truly exceptional talents. It can be hard to gauge that when you’re seventeen, so you might need to get an outside opinion (who is not your mom). You’re better off getting honest advice before you submit.”

If you’d like to include your art portfolio in your application, for example, ask your art teacher or another person knowledgeable in the field if your work is qualified enough for the school you’re applying to. In short, only use the extra materials section if you have a talent that’s central to your personal image and that admissions officers need to see to understand you.

Take all these tips to make your college applications as strong as possible. Good luck, collegiettes!

4 Things You Should Know About AP Classes Before You Take Them

If you’re an ambitious student, chances are you’re preparing for college in whatever ways you can. This means reading books, doing research about various majors, discovering what your passions are and, of course, taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes. AP classes are usually designed to help you succeed in a college classroom by imitating college-level coursework with advanced assignments and lectures. It’s difficult to say which specific AP classes you should take, as every school and student is different, but there are a few key factors everyone should consider when making this decision. We talked to current college students to get real input about their experiences taking AP classes so you’ll have a better understanding of what to look for when choosing yours.

1. Your teacher could make or break your experience

Almost all former AP students agree that the teacher makes all the difference in your success. It all comes down to whether or not you feel prepared for the final AP exam at the end of the course. Every student at every school receives the same exam, which may remind you of the ACT or SAT. This is why it’s crucial that your teacher gives you enough time and information to succeed on them, as their students’ scores reflect on their teaching ability, too. AP exams are graded on a 5-point scale, and depending on the college or your desired major, typically scores of 3 or higher are accepted for college credit. This may seem simple enough, but these exams are tough if you don’t put in the effort ahead of time.

Sarah Madaus, a junior at Temple University, says that she took AP Psychology, AP Language & Composition and AP U.S. Government for college credit. “I got to skip out on 3 gen-eds, which is actually pretty good,” she says. “They were definitely worth taking, but make sure your teacher is good, because the tests are super hard and you can't get credit if you don't get at least a 3 (or 4).”

Related: How to Fully Embrace College If You Loved High School & Are Afraid to Move On

Knowing the reputation of your teacher will help you understand what to expect out of the class. The ultimate goal of taking AP classes, besides expanding your knowledge, is usually to get college credit. This goes hand in hand with getting a good score on the exam. Make sure you have a teacher who will help you succeed.

2. Your school might not offer the AP classes you want to take

Every high school is different when it comes to how many AP classes they offer students. Some offer as few as five, while others have over 30.

Even though you may not be able to skip out entirely on certain college classes, getting to take more advanced ones your freshman year will help set you apart from other students, too. Also, if your high school doesn't offer the AP class you want to take, you can still take the exam and potentially get college credit later. You just have to self-study by using workbooks, textbooks and online resources. You could even try to get independent study credit from your high school.

3. The workload may be more than you want to take on

When it comes down to which AP classes are worth your time, it helps to know what you see yourself pursuing in the future. Again, not everyone knows what they want to major in this early on. If you strongly like learning about certain subjects, though, then these advanced classes are for you. If you’re taking them simply with the hopes of skipping ahead in college, you might want to think twice.

Many AP classes require a lot of reading, like AP Lit and AP U.S. History, and they will take up a lot of your time. Samantha Burke, a recent graduate of Siena College, agrees.

“I took AP Environmental and AP U.S. Gov. I almost took AP U.S. History but I dropped out of it because the workload was more than was worth it to me—the amount of reading was insane,” she says. “If you know what your major is going to be, I'd say take APs that actually count towards core credits.”

Nobody wants to spend their time putting that much effort into a subject they have little interest in if they don’t have to. Sometimes sticking to college gen-ed classes is smarter than taking an AP class in high school, especially if you don’t enjoy your teacher or subject matter.

“I felt like AP World History wasn't that useful, mainly because the subject matter wasn't of much interest to me,” says Kristen Adaway, a senior at the University of Georgia. “There was a TON of reading!” Every class is different, and every teacher views homework differently, but AP classes are generally more work than others so factor that in when planning your weekly schedules.

4. Your future college might not give you credit for the class

This is a harsh reality that many students don’t realize until after they’ve taken the AP exam. As stated above, the exam is scored on a 5 point scale and usually scores of 3 or more are accepted for college credit. This is why you want to be sure you have all the tools and guidance you need to succeed on the exam, because your final score matters greatly.

Lexi Hill, a senior at the University of South Carolina, was lucky enough to get college credit for her scores. “I took AP Psych, AP Gov, and AP Art History! I got a 3 or above on them and they all counted toward college credits,” she says.

Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth, had lots of options to choose from and took 14 AP courses. “My school offered 30+ AP classes.” she says. “None of them will allow me to get college credit, but I will be able to take more advanced classes starting in the fall. Most of them were worth it—e.g. AP Econ and AP Lit especially—though some were more busywork.”

If you know which colleges you are considering, you can reach out to an admissions officer or do research online ahead of time to figure out which AP classes they accept. This may be too far in the future for some students, but if you’re one of the rare ones who knows exactly what they want to do with their life, take advantage of the AP classes that will help push you further towards your goal.

Many colleges do recognize the effort it takes to succeed on these exams and are willing to offer college credit, but you may want to do some research before you commit to an AP class. It never hurts to challenge yourself in the classroom, but it’s important to first ask yourself what you wish to get out of the class and then go from there.

AP classes are a great way to experience a taste of college work, and many teachers pride themselves on helping their students receive high AP exam scores, but they do take up your time and effort. It’s difficult to say which classes are worth your time, but it’s important to talk to others at your school who have already taken AP classes to get their input. Just remember, it really depends on the dedication of your teacher, the amount of effort you’re willing to put in and what you plan to achieve by taking AP classes. No matter what, you have to figure out what’s best for you now and what will help you succeed in the future. Cheers!

Kylie Jenner delighted fans by uploading a surprise Q&A video to her YouTube account on Friday. She and BFF Jordyn Woods discussed a range of topics — most notably, Kylie's daughter, Stormi.

The new mother was more candid about Stormi than she has been in the past, especially since she revealed last month that she wasn't planning on posting any photos of her daughter for awhile.

"Stormi, she's my twin," Kylie said in the video, later admitting that as she gets older, she actually looks more like her dad, Travis Scott.

"She has the most perfect lips in the entire world," Kylie said before poking fun at herself. "She didn't get those from me, I think her dad has those."

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Stormi did take after her mother in a few ways, though.

"I prayed and prayed she would have my big eyes and she has the biggest eyes ever," Kylie said. "I have a three head — it only fits three, my fourth finger comes down to my eyebrows, so I have a three-head and she has a three-head too."

In the video, Kylie also discussed her own body post-baby.

"I feel like people think that I bounced back super fast, which I guess I did," she said, adding that "people can get the wrong idea on Instagram sometimes."

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Kylie's still dealing with a number of insecurities, though.

"My boobs are definitely, like, three times the size, which bothers me," she said. "I have, like, stretch marks on my boobs. I feel like, you know, my stomach isn’t the same, my waist isn’t the same, my butt’s bigger, my thighs are bigger. It's just a change, and honestly, I’m finding I have to change my style a little because nothing in my closet fits me from before."

Props to Kylie for her honesty!

ICYMI, Halsey announced on Instagram earlier this week that she and her boyfriend of about a year, G-Eazy, are "taking some time apart." While the mild statement seemed to indicate things were good between the two — she even wished him the best — some of Halsey's fans appear to believe G-Eazy actually cheated on her.

Their evidence? Halsey's own tweets.

According to Cosmopolitan, Halsey first tweeted and a deleted a scissors emoji. Fans seemed to connect this with lyrics from her and G-Eazy's song, "Him & I." In it, G-Eazy raps, "Ever catch me cheating, she would try to cut my d*ck off."

Then, Halsey tweeted "pumpkin eater," which fans connected with the rhyme "cheater, cheater pumpkin eater."

Perhaps the most damning piece of evidence was Halsey apparently liking a tweet that read, "What's actually funny is that ya'll though Halsey would stay with G Eazy after he got caught cheating."

Of course, this is all just a big conspiracy theory until either Halsey or G-Eazy confirms cheating was the reason they actually split.

13 Ways to Get Thicker & Healthier Hair

Not all people are gifted with naturally thick hair, but fortunately there are ways to make it look like you are! Whether it’s what you eat, what you put on your hair, or how you handle your hair, there are plenty of ways to get healthy and thick hair. So here are 13 excellent ways to make it look like you were gifted with a full, healthy head of luscious hair.

1. Colored dry shampoo ($8.99, Ulta)

These colored sprays are great because they help you in two ways. First, when your hair is dirty and oily it tends to flatten out and look thin, but using a spray of dry shampoo gets rid of all the excess oil and help your hair regain some of its natural volume. Second, the fact that this dry shampoo is colored helps you fake full hair even more. The added color hides your scalp by filling in any sparse areas on your head, making your hair appear thicker.

2. Lowlights

If implemented correctly, lowlights can add dimension to your hair and make it look thicker. By adding shades darker than your than your natural hair, you make your hair look rich and deep. It allows your natural hair color to be the star of the show. Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan, who has styled Leighton Meester, is a big fan of lowlights. “When hair has a difference in tone and colour, and is crisp and vibrant, that makes it beautiful,” he says.

3. Moroccan oil ($15, Sephora)

There’s a reason Moroccan oil gets a lot of love. Not only does it give a serious boost of shine, it can also heal any damage your hair may have. There are many options and brands of Moroccan oil to pick from but one of the fan favorites is Moroccanoil’s Moroccanoil Treatment.

4. Keep it short

When your hair gets too long, it gets weighed down and starts to look sloppy and thinned out. To avoid these issues, keep your hair at a shorter length. It is also beneficial to style your hair with layers, according to stylist Jim Shaw. “Wearing hair styles that include layers and bangs can make your hair appear thicker,” he tells us. With a shorter hairstyle, your hair will much look healthier and thicker.

5. Tease

We know, teased hair sounds so 1980’s, but there is a way you can use it to make your hair look thicker without looking retro. Teasing boosts the volume in your hair, making it appear thicker and much fuller. To tease your hair, begin by by sectioning it into a top, middle and bottom section. Next, take the middle section and brush back the hair towards the scalp. Don’t be afraid, it will look like a hot mess at this point. Spritz this section with some hairspray, lay the top layer over it and then smooth it out with a comb. Add a few extra sprays and you’ll have the faux full hair of your dreams.

6. Rinse hair with cold water

A cold shower sounds abnormal and pretty terrible, but no worries, you don’t need to shower entirely with cold water! Cold water is actually great for your hair. It closes the cuticles of your strands, making them shiny and smooth. After washing your hair as you normally would, quickly turn the water to cold and give your hair a rush of cold water.

7. Avocado

Although you may love them in your guacamole and on top of your toast, avocados have numerous benefits for both inside and outside of your body. While they may be healthy to eat, they can also be used for hair care. Avocados are full of healthy oils and fats, which not only moisturize your scalp and hair but also help promote hair growth. Shaw suggests natural oils to avoid hair breakage. “Try using products with natural oils in them, like avocado, olive, mustard, jojoba or almond oils to name a few," he says. "I've seen great results with these products on hair that breaks easily.” You can reap the benefits by mashing an avocado, spreading it throughout your hair, waiting around 15 minutes and then showering it out.

8. Biotin

Biotin (also known as Vitamin B7) is a key player in skin, hair and nail health. One of the causes of hair loss can be a biotin deficiency, so having enough of this vitamin in your diet is essential for healthy hair. Luckily, dermatologist Nicole Rogers, M.D., suggests that our daily diet is enough to supply vitamins like biotin. “Most people living in America receive enough of the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy hair through their diet and daily multivitamins,” she says. She suggests checking with a doctor to see if you have an actual vitamin deficiency before taking a supplement. You can also get biotin naturally by eating foods like egg yolks, nuts and red meat.

9. Honey

You may think that the sticky texture of honey means you should keep it as far away from your hair as possible, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Honey is super moisturizing for your hair and helps out with issues like dry hair and dandruff. Sebastian A.J. Zaat, Ph.D., has seen incredible antibacterial properties of honey himself. He is involved with the research on at the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. "Honey or isolated honey-derived components might be of great value for prevention and treatment of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria," he says. It also comes off easily with water, so don't worry, your hair won't be sticky after using it.

10. Volumizing shampoo ($26, Bumble and bumble.)

There are loads of volumizing shampoos out there. These are the shampoos you should use to get big, thick hair. Volumizing shampoos boost the volume of your hair, making it look much thicker. Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth College, recommends two thickening shampoos. “My favorite volumizing shampoos are Bumble and bumble. Thickening and Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Lemon Sage.” Washing with these will help thin hair keep volume throughout the day.

11. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil stimulates hair growth. It also helps to nourish the roots of your hair and help moisturize the scalp. Massage the oil into your scalp, keep it in for around half an hour and then rinse in the shower. By doing this weekly, your hair will grow thicker and look healthier. Tea tree oil can be found at most drug stores and health supplement shops.

12. Silk pillowcases ($19.99, Amazon)

This sounds unnecessarily luxurious, but it’s actually surprisingly affordable and helpful for keeping your locks thick and healthy. Hair stylist Ali Batista shares that silk allows your hair to slide smoothly. “Silk is a material that will allow hair to slide around more smoothly so you will have less breakage and no more bedhead."  Traditional pillowcases are rough on hair and can cause breakage but silk pillowcases are much better for your hair because they are gentle on the strands of your hair and result in less breakage. Treating your locks to this pillowcase every night will keep them healthy and happy.

13. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar isn’t just great for salad; it also works wonders on your hair. It helps in numerous ways: balancing the pH of your hair, killing bacteria, encouraging hair growth, decreasing frizziness and adding shine, just to name a few. Mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar and apply it to your hair. Keep the mixture in for a few minutes and then rinse it off.

With these tricks, you'll be able to take your hair from thin to thick in no time!

The US Army Is Reportedly Discharging Immigrant Recruits

A number of immigrant U.S. Army reservists and recruits who were promised a path to citizenship upon enlisting in the military are now being discharged, according to a new report from the Associated Press

How many foreign-born recruits have been discharged is currently unknown, but The New York Times reported that there are at least 30. There are also thousands more stuck in "limbo,"— currently enlisted, but unable to serve — at risk of being discharged.

As for those who have been dismissed, the AP described a shared sense of confusion.

"Some of the service members say they were not told why they were being discharged," the report stated. "Others who pressed for answers said the Army informed them they'd been labeled as security risks because they have relatives abroad or because the Defense Department had not completed background checks on them."

One recruit, a Pakistani immigrant who spoke with the NYT under anonymity out of fear of being harmed in Pakistan if he's deported, had previously obtained his security report. It stated that he "has such a deep and longstanding loyalty to the U.S., that he can be expected to resolve any conflict of interest in favor of the U.S."

A month later, he was informed that he was being discharged after failing his security background check.

Another recruit, Private Second Class Lucas Calixto, who's lived in the United States since age 12, was discharged for "personnel security," according to a form. He was never given any additional explanation.

As a result, Calixto sued the Defense Department last week. He claimed the dismissal came with "no warning and no explanation," violated department regulations and "the fundamental requirements of due process."

The dismissals come at the same time that the Army "has been unable to meet its 2018 recruiting goals," the NYT reported. The Pentagon's spokespeople declined to comment due to pending litigation.

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Love Languages’ & How They Can Improve Your Relationship

We have preferences for just about everything in life—pizza toppings, music genres, brands of toothpaste, types of milk—but when it comes to how we want to receive love (aka how we want other people to show they love us), the options may not always seem as crystal clear as skim, soy, cashew or almond.

It’s one thing to talk with our partners about what candies we like on our froyo or which Netflix movies are our favorites, but talking about how we both want to show or receive love isn’t exactly a casual conversation. However, when we don’t talk about the things we wish they’d say or do more often (or less often), the relationship can easily spiral into a passive-aggressive mess.

But, wait—are we supposed to automatically know how we want to be showered with love? Or even give love, for that matter?

The solution? Understanding the different languages for how we all express and receive love. According to relationship expert Gary Chapman, who wrote The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, there are five different “languages” of expressing love to someone. Chapman believes that by discovering which language speaks to you, you can find out what makes you feel the most fulfilled and happy. Additionally, by learning your partner’s love language, you can understand their preferences and better cater to their needs.

If you think you’ve taken every type of personality quiz on the planet (or BuzzFeed), think again. Inspired by Chapman’s book, the Five Love Languages Quiz is a love life game-changer; by filling out the simple questionnaire, you can learn exactly how you understand the language of love, giving you crazy insights into what you want in a relationship. The quiz results rank your love language preferences from strongest to weakest, and a video on the site even illustrates visually how each language can be expressed.

Check out these descriptions of each love language.

Words of Affirmation

For you, it's all about talking the talk. If this is your language, you think it's most meaningful when your loved ones compliment you and tell you not only that they appreciate you, but why they love you and think you're so special. You're also not one to easily forget insults or negative comments.

Acts of Service

You're the kind of person who feels most loved when someone close to you helps out with responsibilities and chores that consume your time and energy. Whether your SO lends a hand with the laundry or helps with a project without being asked, acts of service give you major heart-eyed emoji feels. On the other hand, you'll be pretty crushed if your partner is lazy or backs out of commitments.

Receiving Gifts

For you, receiving a thoughtful gift shows that your partner knows you inside and out. You value gift-giving, as well as any sacrifices that went into the experience of presenting the gift. This also means you value relationship milestones, and you'd have a hard time shaking off a forgotten anniversary, birthday or thoughtless gift.

Quality Time

You're happiest when you and your SO get to spend time together—just the two of you. In your opinion, the ultimate grand gesture is when someone you love carves out time to see you outside of noisy restaurants or bars, crowded gatherings or big parties with other people. And if someone bails on plans or is constantly more interested in their phone than in what you have to say, it's over.

Physical Touch

Hugging, holding hands with someone you love and meaningful touches on your arm, shoulder or face mean the world to you. If this is your language, you feel most loved when you are physically close with your SO. Likewise, you'd be crushed if you felt neglected or ignored by your partner.

These descriptions may sound like they came straight from an overly cheesy anniversary card, or they may just seem obvious. (I mean, who doesn’t want their partner—or anyone else, for that matter—to do the dishes for them?) However, by knowing the love language of you and your partner, you gain insight into how you want to receive love and how you can best show your special someone that you appreciate them.

According to Cosmopolitan, it’s important to address the fact that you receive love in a way that might be different than how your partner receives love, and the Five Love Languages Quiz is a surefire way to confirm your love-receiving preferences.

So, once you know your language, how can you put it to use? We talked to a dating expert and a number of collegiettes who swear by love languages to resolve conflicts and enhance their relationships.

1. You’ll find out what makes your partner happy

Once you know your partner’s love language, you can start making more of an effort to show them affection based on their preferences—and this will undoubtedly bring the two of you closer and show that you care about what makes them happy.

Devin O’Connell, a University of Florida senior, says that she and her boyfriend have been dating for almost two years, and that knowing each other’s love language has enhanced their relationship by allowing them to understand each other’s preferences. “In the very beginning, I told him that 'Quality Time' is my love language,” the 21-year-old says. “Through that, he always makes an effort to spend time with me, even if it’s just seeing each other for 10 minutes a day.”

The act of taking the quiz with your partner, or even suggesting that he or she take the quiz, shows that you are interested in finding the best way to love them—and that is pretty valuable in and of itself.

“If you can find out the best way to love your partner, I think that’s very special and shows that you really care about that person,” Devin says.

If your partner is a “Words of Affirmation" person, you can show them love by complimenting them, telling them you’re proud of them for something they accomplished, or that you love that they’re so passionate about a project they’re working on. If they speak the “Acts of Service” language, you can lend a hand with a task they’re dreading or offer to help with small but meaningful chores; this will really show them that you care about making them feel loved and fulfilled.

2. You can learn a lot from your ‘secondary’ languages

The Five Love Languages Quiz tells you more than just your primary love language; it ranks your other languages from strongest to weakest, which can offer valuable insights into what else you want from your partner and how much or how little each language matters to you when receiving love.

Marla Manes, a University of Florida junior, says that she learned a lot about herself just from discovering her secondary love languages.

“I already knew that my language would be ‘Physical Touch’ going into the quiz because I love hugging and cuddling and holding hands with anybody that I’m close with,” she says. “But the quiz gave me new insight into my secondary languages—the ones that I still value or use but at a lower level. Those results surprised me, but the more I thought about them, the more I considered the results to be true. It showed me my relationships in a new light.”

Marla says that she and her boyfriend have been dating for almost four months, and that taking the quiz side-by-side was a beneficial experience. “By taking it with a partner, you also learn about them and about your relationship,” she says. “We learned about what each of us value so that we can express our love effectively. … All of the languages are valid, and I think it’s just another tool that you can use to strengthen your relationships.”

Love, like any emotion, is not always clear-cut. The love languages concept reflects this notion with the secondary languages, which represent nuances or “dialects” of how you want to be loved.

3. Discussing your love languages as a couple can help the two of you communicate better

Samantha Daniels, author of Matchbook: The Diary of a Modern Day Matchmaker and creator of the dating app The Dating Lounge, says that discussing your love language with your partner is a simple but beneficial exercise that can make it easier to talk about your preferences.

“A lot of people have a hard time telling their partner that they wish they’d say ‘I love you’ more often than they do, or that they wish they’d show their appreciation in a different way because they’re not feeling loved,” Daniels says. “But having these set categories or ‘languages’ makes it easier for people to explain not only what they want from their partner, but how and why they feel connected to that type of language.”

Taking the love langauges quiz can spark an important dialogue between you and your SO and can make it easier to talk about other topics or issues that you may not have been as open to discussing previously.

4. Love languages can benefit other relationships in your life

Love languages are not limited to romantic relationships; discovering your language—and the languages of those around you—can make you a better friend, family member, roommate and team member.

“One night at dinner, a group of my friends took the quiz together and shared our results. It really made us such stronger friends because we’re able to know what the other ones need in order to feel that sense of belonging,” says Jacquelin Sheehan, a sophomore at the University of Florida. “I know one of my best friend’s is ‘Words of Affirmation,’ so I make sure to always tell her things I appreciate about her ... because I know she’ll benefit more from it.”

Telling friends and other loved ones in your life about how you like to receive love—and taking the time to learn about their personalities and preferences—gives you more opportunities to show them that you care about them in a way that best suits their wants and needs.

6 Ways An Internship Will Change Your Life

$

0

Regardless of where you are in your life, you may be panicking about your future. Maybe you don’t know what you want to do when you grow up, or maybe you know what you want to do but don’t know how to get there. Luckily, internships are one route that can help you figure out your future (while also looking totally impressive on a resume).

Being an intern can change the way you do things: manage time, think about your future and prepare you for the working world ahead. As a rule, experience is never a bad thing to have, and internships can be one step on the way to your future career.

We sat down with NYC-based career counselor Allison Cheston to talk about some of the ways an internship can change your life.

1. You can try something new

While internships can help you work on honing the skills you already have, they can also open the door to new experiences you may not have considered.

“This is the ideal time to try out different work experiences to identify strengths and interests," says Cheston. “It’s too early for a college student to be 100 percent be sure about his career choice. This could be an opportunity to try something new—you never know what will spark a new career idea.”

Even if you know exactly what you want to do as a career, having an internship while in college or while job hunting can clue you in to the nuances of your field that you may not be aware of.

You may even land an internship that gets you to consider new career paths, as well as help you out on your way to pursuing your dream career.

Helmi Henkin, a senior at The University of Alabama who’s currently interning with a domestic violence advocacy group, found that her internship was even better than she thought it would be. “It is not a glamorous gig … and time at the office is usually not fast-paced or exciting to any stretch of the imagination," she admits. "Nonetheless, the experiences I have had as an intern have been invaluable; I am able to contribute to work that most people have to undergo years of schooling and training to get near. It is through going through the 'boring' tasks of my job that I learn what it really means to have this job in the future, and gives me plenty to think about as to whether I am meant to pursue this career field in the future.”

2. You’ll learn time management

It’s no secret that there are too few hours in the day. At first, an internship might seem overwhelming because of the added responsibility and time commitment. Though this may be the case at first, adhering to an internship schedule may end up helping you with your time management skills.

”Time management is a lifelong skill to be honed while still in school. The same principles apply between school and work: Figure out your best system for tracking your time and managing your obligations,” says Cheston. “Everyone is different so it's important to find something that works for you. Even if you're not a morning person to begin with, you can become one. Starting early gives you the time you need and creates an oasis of calm when you begin your day.”

Having a regular schedule can kickstart your brain into being more motivated to wake up early like Cheston said. Though time management may be more difficult to grasp, it’s probably one of the most useful skills to have. We all know we shouldn’t wait until the night before to write that important paper—the time management tools you learn in an internship may help you stay ahead of schedule.

3. You’ll be more prepared for future jobs

Internships are the stepping stone on the way to a real life job. Because of this, a lot of the trials and tribulations you’ll experience as part of an internship will prepare you for ones that you’re likely to encounter in a full-time job, such as working in an office all day.

“What I see most is that students have a tough time transitioning to being in an office and at a desk all day. They find it tough to manage their energy. I advocate managing your eating and sleeping, and making sure you exercise regularly,” explains Cheston.

Something like maintaining energy while at a desk job isn’t likely to be at the forefront of your brain when considering future jobs. However, an internship may teach you that you’re not the type of person who can work an office job (or you may find out that it suits you). Regardless, being an intern will allow you to learn more about yourself, and how you work best.

4. You may doubt yourself

It’s clear that internships can be a beneficial experience, but there’s no denying that internships (especially unpaid ones) may cause you to second-guess yourself. If you put all of your time and effort into a job you may not be getting paid for, you’re most likely going to have to reconcile yourself with the fact that you won’t receive monetary compensation for your work.

“Although I've loved the experiences, I've found some unexpected struggles. … Of course, many companies do not offer monetary compensation for their internships, but having seen how much I can contribute to a team, I have become extremely frustrated at the lack of pay,” says Isabela Espadas, a sophomore at The New School who’s currently interning for an Atlanta-based non-profit. “Although I don't regret undergoing this experience at all, it has taught me how valuable my time is, and that there is nothing wrong with being compensated for hard work.”

Though unpaid internships pay not be for everyone, some people prefer them. Having an unpaid internship can definitely be stressful if you feel like you’re pulling a lot of the weight, but they can also be a less stressful way of gaining insight into what your future career may look like.

“To anyone thinking about getting an unpaid internship, I would tell them to definitely go for it. Even if you think your work does not matter, it will give you important insight into the sector in which you work and great practice at skills that will benefit you in any job you get later in life,” says Helmi.

5. You gain experience with the job application process

Oftentimes, internship applications have the same general specifications and require the same documents as if you were applying for a job. Because of this, applying for an internship can give you the extra push you need to perfect your resume or your interview skills. One of the most important (and difficult to perfect) documents you’ll need to gain experience making is your cover letter.

“Most people—of all experience levels—write really bad cover letters. If you can write one that focuses on what you can do for an organization, instead of what it can do for you, you will automatically stand out. Think about three skills you offer and use bullet points separated from the main paragraphs, for ease of reading,” explains Cheston.

Even before you become an intern, the application process will teach you valuable lessons that you can apply to your life as you move forward past your internship (or graduation!) and begin applying for your dream job.

6. You’ll learn to think of coworkers as more than just the people you work with

Interning may be the first time you get to spend time with people in a solely work environment. Though this can be anxiety-inducing, it will ultimately teach you how to adapt to how your coworkers work, as well as give you insight into the bigger picture of where you’re working.

“I have gotten a peek into my coworkers' daily lives and follow their cases from beginning to end at various stages of the support process,” says Helmi.

If you end up interning for somewhere like a university, the experience may also help you get to know school officials that may seem distant.

“As a first-generation college student, I was able to humanize the esteemed heads of college admissions and learn the behind-the-scenes mechanisms,” says Bonnie Lin, a sophomore at Amherst College who interned for the Amherst College Office of Admissions.

Being an intern may seem tough at first. However, you may be able to find your niche and learn more about yourself while doing so. Nobody said interning would be easy, but it will be helpful.

Four Boys Rescued from Thailand Cave As Rescue Mission Continues

After weeks of uncertainty and dangerous weather conditions, four boys trapped inside the Tham Luang Cave in Thailand have successfully been extracted by divers in an hours-long rescue mission.

The first two boys were successfully freed from the cave around 6 p.m. local time on Sunday, with the other two boys rescued shortly after, Narongsak Osatanakorn, the former Chiang Rai governor who has been heading rescue efforts, said at a press conference.

The boys were immediately placed in ambulances and rushed to the hospital in Chiang Rai to be examined and treated.

On Saturday, the “water levels were the lowest they had been,” Osatanakorn said, with most of the cave walkable. However, the boys still had to dive more than a half-mile, along with two divers each guiding them, to get to safety. The boys wore full-faced masks “while hanging on to the bodies of rescue divers,” reported Channel News Asia.

It took divers more than six hours to reach the boys from the command center set up a mile into the cave, according to TIME.

The rescue mission has been put on hold for the time being as supplies, including oxygen, are replenished. Osatanakorn estimated that the rescue would continue in “10 to 20 hours.”

Osatanakorn said the operation was “more successful than [he] expected,” but the race against the clock continues as eight young boys and their 25-year-old soccer coach Ekkapol Chantawong still remain trapped in a dry chamber more than two miles from the entrance of the cave.

Fighting against floodwaters and dropping oxygen levels and racing against the clock of an impending monsoon rainstorm, the rescue mission has been fraught with dangers. On Friday, a volunteer diver succumbed to fatal oxygen deprivation, according to ABC News, underscoring just how dangerous the conditions are, even for trained professionals. To combat rapidly dropping oxygen levels, the rescue team has pumped “pure air” into the chamber and eliminated all nonessential personnel from the area to preserve oxygen, CNN reported.

The Wild Boars soccer team consisting of 12 boys and their coach first went missing on June 23 after entering the cave. Heavy rains flooded part of the cave system, trapping the soccer team inside the cave, according to The Huffington Post. The group had already been trapped for more than a week when they were found by two British volunteer rescue divers on July 2.

Since then, the Thai Navy, along with expert divers, engineers and rescuers from around the world had teamed up to rescue the team and deliver food, water, medicine and oxygen tanks to the trapped soccer team. Divers also taught the boys ― some of whom did not know how to swim ― breathing and diving techniques to prepare them for the journey out of the cave, HuffPost reports.

Thai officials also began collaborating with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to find alternative rescue methods to free the young boys, ABC News reports. Musk wrote on Twitter that his team at SpaceX, his rocket company, is building a “tiny, kid-size submarine” to help the boys escape. Musk also wrote on Twitter that an inflatable nylon tube could be used as a sort of underwater “air tunnel” to rescue the soccer team.

The boys urged their loved ones to not worry about them in letters written to their families, and wrote that they hoped to be able to eat their favorite foods soon.

“Dad, mom don’t worry about me,” wrote 11-year-old Chanin Viboonrungruang to his parents, according to CNN. “I am fine. Please tell Pee Yod [a female relative] to take me to eat fried chicken. Love you all.”

Meghan Markle Sounds Like She Has A Slight British Accent Now & I Can Totally Hear It

Meghan Markle has sure acquired a lot of new things, from a new husband, a new home, a new title, and now it sounds like she may have a new accent.

A Twitter video of Markle greeting the public during her June visit to Cheshire with the Queen has since gone viral, and people are noticing a slight British accent.

While Markle doesn’t say much in the video, there is definitely something different in the way she talks, especially when she says “Oh, did you?” and “Thank you.” It might not be a completely different accent, but perhaps a change in the inflection, as if the new Duchess has adopted more of an English person’s cadence.

See if you can hear the subtle difference in the video below, especially when she says “Yes we all had a great day, I think” and “The sun was shining for us ― oh, very lucky all around.”

According to The Huffington Post, this isn’t the first time that Markle’s speech habits have been scrutinized. During her appearance in Edinburgh in February, a fan thought Markle’s accent had changed when the Duchess said “scone” like the British typically do, which is pronounced like “gone.” Americans, on the other hand, pronounce it more like “bone.”

But considering that she has moved to a new country and is surrounded by British people all day, it’s not surprising that Markle would pick up more of a British lilt.

“Meghan Markle strikes me as someone who is very attentive and someone who has a lot of empathy for others,” voice, speech and dialect coach Patricia Fletcher told HuffPost when explaining why someone in Markle’s shoes might pick up on the speech patterns of those around her.

“If she also has a good ear for music, rhythm and inflection and is now surrounded by British English speakers (especially people she loves) it would not surprise me if her sounds might adjust a bit―perhaps even unconsciously,” Fletcher added.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go practice my British accent for the rest of the day.

Popcorn? Check. Mood lighting? Check. Netflix logged-in and loaded?…Check. Now here comes the hard part—while there are tons of wonderfully romantic movies out there, sometimes you and your partner might want to watch something a little more…risqué than your average romantic film. If you’re searching for a movie that will add some extra oomph to your romantic night in, then look no further. We talked to a few collegiettes and rounded up seven of the steamiest and sexiest movies to heat up your next movie night!

1.The Notebook (2004)

To kick off the list, we’ll start with a popular favorite. Megan Scavo, a junior at the University of Central Florida, says that, “The Notebook, although a classic, is also very steamy at moments and can be a fun, flirty movie to watch with your partner."

When a poor man falls in love with a rich woman, things get complicated. Stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams offer up some serious eye candy, and their hot and heavy whirlwind of a relationship will take you and your partner on a wild, passionate ride.

Ways to watch: Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Video

2.The Blue Lagoon (1980)

Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins star in a 1980s-film adaption of the 1908 novel of the same name and basically live out one of the sexiest (and slightly horrifying) fantasies ever—being stuck on a desert island with your lover.

The movie follows the lives of two children who are shipwrecked on a tropical island. When the two are left to fend for themselves, they mature into young, beautiful adults, unaware of the sexual awakening they will soon encounter.

With their tanned and toned bods, newfound sexual desires and steamy love scenes, characters Emmeline and Richard “will remind you and your partner how it felt when you discovered each other for the first time,” says Leah*, a senior at Carthage College. “Their young love is so innocent, yet sensual at the same time.” The Blue Lagoon is one film that is sure to heat up your summer nights together.

Ways to watch: YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Video

3.Two Moon Junction (1988)

There’s just something about forbidden love that movies love to explore. If you’re looking for something a little steamier than just any old fling, then look no further than Two Moon Junction. “It isn’t necessarily Oscar-worthy but it’s steamy AF,” says Norris Goldflies, a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The film portrays a young Southern debutante named April who falls for a drifter that works at a local carnival. The woman temporarily abandons her upscale lifestyle and semi-arranged marriage to pursue a lustful, erotic fling with the young man. While not the ideal situation for a real-life couple, this film offers some lusty love scenes for you and your partner to enjoy.

4.Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)

A woman with blue hair, a sexually confused high schooler and a roughly seven-minute sex scene are in store for you in the film Blue Is the Warmest Colour. This 2013 film is a coming-of-age erotic romantic drama that tells the story of Adéle, a French teenager who discovers her sexual desire and freedom when she begins a relationship with Emma, a painter with blue hair.

“The film is deeply passionate and an amazing depiction of self-discovery—it’s easily one of the raciest films I’ve ever watched, and it does not disappoint,” says Leah. If you’re looking to dive deeper into the steamier films and experience some LGBTQ+ scenes, then Blue Is the Warmest Colour is definitely for you.

Ways to watch: Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Video

5.Titanic (1997)

As another fan favorite, this option is extremely steamy to say the least. A young aristocrat named Rose falls in love with a poor artist named Jack (does anyone else catch a running theme here?) while aboard the R.M.S. Titanic, and their ill-fated, tragic love story will have you wanting your partner to draw you like one of his French girls. *wink*

“The car scene. That’s all I have to say. If that scene doesn’t define steamy, then I don’t know what does,” says Leah. Oh, and Leonardo DiCaprio of course.

Ways to watch: YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Video

6. Secretary (2002)

Need a movie that'll keep your partner interested? If you and your SO are into sexy roleplay, then Secretary (aka the original Fifty Shades of Grey) is definitely the movie to watch. When a young woman gets released from a mental hospital, she gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer with certain needs—as you can guess, their relationship turns quite sexual.

"Secretary is definitely a movie that's fun for both parties," Leah explains. "Seeing Maggie Gyllenhaal crawling on her hands and knees in a secretary outfit will have your partner jumping at the chance to do a little roleplaying between the two of you." Plus, it's an easy way to drop the hint if roleplaying is something you've been wanting to try!

Ways to watch: YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Video

7. Bang Gang (2015)

Although the topics toward the end of this movie shift to a more serious tone, the first half of the film will leave you and your partner all hot and bothered. The 2015 French film Bang Gang follows a group of young, hot and unsupervised teenagers who create a club to engage in sexual acts and games that get steamier and steamier. An added bonus? The movie is in French, so that in itself is pretty damn sexy.

If you're looking for some teenage angst, boredom and sexual expression to add some steaminess to your night, then Bang Gang is definitely worth a spot on your Netflix queue.

Ways to watch: Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Video

With some popular classics and maybe even a new one for you and your partner to watch, this steamy lineup of films is sure to make your next Netflix and chill a whole lot hotter.

How She Got There: Jill Perilman, Co-Founder & Design Director of Liverpool

Name: Jill Perilman
Job Title and Description: Co-Founder & Design Director of Liverpool
College Name/Major: Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/Fashion Design
Website: liverpooljeans.com
Twitter Handle: @liverpooljeanco
Instagram Handle: @liverpooljeans

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

JP: I currently work as a design director with Liverpool, and there is no such thing as a typical day. I work with my design team to create the collection each season and spend a lot of time researching and finding new fabrications for the line. Once I find fabrics I like, I create a style in my size and I “test-wear” them to ensure I like how they feel and perform. If they pass, I’m confident other women will love them as much as I do. My husband Ron (president of Liverpool) does the same for the men’s collection. I'm also involved in all fittings every day and “cross-fit” on various sizes to ensure our fits reach a variety of shapes and figures. I also work with our e-commerce department going over PR ideas, such as photo shoots and video ideas.

What is the best part of your job?

JP: The best part of my job is when we get positive feedback about the collection. When we hear the buyers and consumers love what we are doing it makes all the hard work worth it. I also enjoy reading all the positive reviews online, it’s fun to hear that what we are doing as a brand makes our customers happy.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

JP: I graduated from FIDM the year of a recession. There were not a lot of jobs on the market, but I was determined and applied to every ad that appeared in Apparel News. I was offered a job as an assistant designer for a junior denim/surf company. After only six months, they needed to lay people off and I was given two weeks notice. That news did not stop me from continuing to work hard and stay late, even if it was for a few more days. When it came time for me to leave, the owner told me he was impressed with my work ethic and offered me another position at the company.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

JP: The most valuable thing I’ve learned in my career is to know when to not force an idea. There has to be a natural progression to design and creating something. If something isn’t working, it’s best to let it go and start on something new. I can be stubborn, so I’ve had to learn that the hard way.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

JP: Discover what you love to do and look for job positions that you are passionate about. The biggest mistakes I made were at the beginning of my career when I would take a job just to have a job. Granted there was a recession and jobs were hard to come by, but it’s important to seek out companies you are passionate about - vision, mission, product - in order to lay a foundation for your career.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

JP: I would have to say now, designing for Liverpool and evolving the brand to what it is today. The design team is given a lot of autonomy to create clothing that we want to wear.  It’s also been surreal for me when a magazine wants to interview me for an article. I don’t think I will ever get used to that.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

JP: I am very impressed when a candidate I'm interviewing interviews me as well. It’s telling when I am asked questions like, “what are your expectations for this position in the first three months” or “how can I exceed those expectations.” It’s a two-way street – I have to think this person will be of value to the company and the person has to think we are worth working for.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

JP: There is immense value in internships, try and secure as many as you can.  Also networking. Never underestimate the relationships you create and how they may play out in the future. And also, that if you do find your ‘dream’ job, don’t take it for granted, but instead leverage the experience to learn and grow, it will only make you more valuable.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

JP: Be as relevant for the job you are applying for as possible. It’s like doing a keyword match and only having the most qualified resumes come to the top. This requires energy researching the job requirements and company, reshaping your resume to meet their needs and then applying. It could mean getting the interview or not.
