Ever notice that emojis are... all one color? Sure, there are exceptions, like the Japanese Dolls and the Man with Turban but for the most part, if you want to send a high-five, a-ok or thumbs up, it’s going to be with a Caucasian hand.
That will all change with Apple’s next iOS and OS X update for which they’re rolling out a whole new group of emoji people. With the new emojis, users will be able to select their emoji and then will be prompted to choose the skin color they want for that emoji—because princesses, police officers and thumbs down all come in a wide variety of shades.
There will also be emojis added to be inclusive of all different types of families—families with two moms, two dads or a mom and a dad, as well as wider variety of international flags to use.
While not everyone is thrilled with the emoji choices—there have been complaints on Twitter for the yellow skinned emojis being too yellow and the lack of red-headed emojis—this is still progress, as now more people than ever can feel represented in emoji-only conversations.
And never fear, the dancing girls are still there. Phew.
