Pete Davidson is speaking out mental health and being bullied online and in public following his split from Ariana Grande. On Monday, the Saturday Night Live star took to Instagram to reveal that he has been “online bullied” since he and Grande called off their engagement, and shared his struggle with mental illness and his efforts to raise awareness about it.
“I’ve kept my mouth shut. Never mentioned any names, never said a word about anyone or anything,” Davidson posted to Instagram in a text post.
“I’m trying to understand how when something happens to a guy the whole entire world just trashes him without any facts of frame of reference. Especially in today’s climate where everyone loves to be offended and upset it truly is mind boggling,” the 25-year-old comedian’s message continued, explaining that this is why he has been so open in the past about his mental health struggles and his experience with Borderline Personality Disorder. “I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months.”
“I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don't want to be on this earth,” Davidson added.
“I just want you guys to know. No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won't,” the comedian admonished his tormentors. “I’m upset I even have to say this. To all those holding me down and seeing this for what it is – I see you and I love you.”
Davidson has been extremely open in the past about his struggles with mental health, and unfortunately, online trolls have tried to use this against him. According to Hello Giggles, some of those trolls even tried to suggest that Davidson shouldn’t date because of his diagnosis. Davidson at the time responded that it was “f*cked up to stigmatize people as crazy.”
According to E! News, a week after Davidson broke up with Grande, he made his first public appearance while co-hosting a comedy show in West Hollywood, where he tried to make light of the situation. “Well, as you could tell, I don't want to be here. There's a lot going on,” Davidson said. “Does anybody have any open rooms? Looking for a roommate?”
Meanwhile, Grande recently channeled their breakup into her new smash hit “Thank U, Next” where she name-drops Davidson, as well as her other famous exes, PopSugarreports.
Grande’s video for the song officially dropped on Friday, and in her “Burn Book” in the music video, Grande features Davidson’s photo next to the statements like “Sry I dipped” and “I love u always.”
At the end of the day, though, no one deserves to be bullied, especially if that person is trying to be open with their feelings and struggles with mental health.
