Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most popular shows on television. It’s approaching the end of its 14th season and has already been renewed for a 15th. Hardcore fans of the ABC drama would no doubt want to keep up with the happenings of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital for what seems like forever, but the end could be near.
In a new interview, Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, noted that her time on Grey’s (and more importantly the show itself), could end soon.
“We’re getting there,” Pompeo told US Weekly. “Shonda and I will make that decision together. I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship. You gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people’s flaws and accept your won flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better.”
Over the course of its 14 seasons, characters have come and gone, but one thing has remained constant—Ellen Pompeo, who has been with the series since day one. It’s clear that audiences love Pompeo, and Shonda Rimes apparently loves her too. So much so, that Rimes has reportedly said “that she’d continue working on Grey’s Anatomy as long as Ellen Pompeo wanted.”
But fans don’t have too much to worry about right now. Earlier this year, Variety reported that Pompeo signed a two-year contract extension that also made her a producer on Grey’s. And late last month, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Grey’s would return for a 15th season, meaning we have at least one more year to enjoy Ellen Pompeo and Grey’s Anatomy.
The Grey’s Anatomy season 14 finale airs Thursday, May 17, on ABC.
