If you checked your Instagram feed at some point on Wednesday, chances are it was bombarded by the same picture of a model in a red one-piece swimsuit sitting poolside - and while you may have figured out by now that it was a giveaway offering free swimsuits (for those who reposted the photo and paid for shipping and handling), what actually went down? (Hint: It was basically the Fyre Festival of swimsuit giveaways.)
The company, Sunny Co Clothing, which was started by two seniors at the University of Arizona, was overwhelmed by the response (which included hundreds of thousands of reposts and over 100,000 comments on the original photo), BuzzFeed reports.
Upon realizing how big the giveaway had gotten, the company added rules for the giveaway, saying, "due to the viral volume of participants, we reserve the right to cap the promotion," and that there could be delays in shipping. They also released the promo code SUNNY for the free swimsuit on their Instagram page so it was essentially up for grabs by anyone, regardless of whether they reposted the photo - and that's where things turned bad.
Tons of people who used the promo code ended up being charged for the full $77.97 for the swimsuit, instead of only the $12.98 for shipping and handling costs - and as you'd expect, people are pissed.
In response to the situation, the company posted on its Facebook page, "We truly had no idea the response was going to be so overwhelming and we are very sorry for any confusion," they wrote. "We will make our best effort to honor our offer for the first 50,000 orders placed on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. If you accidentally placed an order without using the discount code, we will refund you the price of the swimsuit. However, we will not be able to refund transaction fees."
Naturally, the company has since deleted its Instagram page - and as usual, as when anything happens on the Internet, there were some pretty ~fire~ memes as a result.
