The Depressing Reason Serena Williams Gives for Not Being Considered the Greatest Athlete Ever

There isn't much not to love about Serena Williams. Not only does she kill it on the court (setting records no other tennis player has achieved, nonetheless), but off the court, she's majorly vocal when it comes to speaking up for women and people of color - and her recent interview for ESPN's "The Undefeated" was no exception.

During the interview with the rapper Common, Williams discussed the reason she believes she's still (somehow!) not considered the best athlete of all time - and while it kind of bums us out, it only reinforces why women should continue speaking up for equality.

"I think if I were a man, I would have been in that conversation a long time ago," she says. "I think being a woman is just a whole new set of problems from society that you have to deal with, as well as being black, so it's a lot to deal with, and especially lately."

It's super depressing reasoning - but it's also something that any woman who's ever been paid less, interrupted by a man or told "we don't need feminism anymore," can understand completely.

This isn't the first time Williams has spoken out against the blatant sexism she has to deal with as a female athlete - earlier this year, she slammed Indian Wells Tennis Garden CEO Raymond Moore after he said male tennis players like Roger Federer and Rafal Nadal "have carried the sport." (Yikes.) It's no wonder she's tired of not being recognized as the amazing, record-breaking athlete she is.
