A 24-year-old woman from Texas has pleaded guilty to engaging in a sexual relationship with one of her students. According to ABC13 News, the former middle school teacher will face a maximum sentence of five years for the aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Alexandria Vera was an English teacher at Stovall Middle School. Last summer, Vera taught an 8th grade English class. ABC13 reports that she started a sexual relationship with a male student who was just 13 years old. Court documents indicate that the student’s parents were both aware of the relationship and accepting of Vera’s role as their son’s girlfriend.
In addition to this, the court documents detail Vera’s alleged pregnancy. They state that she became pregnant with her student’s child in January 2016. Although the boy’s family expressed excitement over the baby, Vera chose to terminate her pregnancy after Child Protective Services arrived unexpectedly at her school in February to find out more about her relationship with him.
According to KTLA, Vera initially refused to admit to any wrongdoing. Police were able to find evidence of the relationship via Vera’s cell phone, so, in April, school officials placed her on administrative leave. A warrant for Vera’s arrest was issued the following month.
Vera surrendered and plead guilty, a move that reduced her maximum sentence by 20 years. The student has been placed in foster care.
