The CW Is Developing a 'Riverdale' Spinoff About Sabrina the Teenage Witch

We may have just found your new CW  addiction, and trust me—it's going to be good. The CW and WB have a Riverdale spinoff in the works for the 2018-2019 season. The best part? It's about Sabrina the Teenage Witch! I know—I'm freaking out, too.

Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as the executive producer and writer of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The show will focus on Sabrina's life as part-witch, part-human, only it won't be anything like the Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart that we know and love. It "reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft,"TVLine reports.

In case you didn't know, Sabrina is part of the Archie Comics universe, just like Riverdale. Aguirre-Sacasa created the 2014 comics the show will be based on. This spinoff only makes sense, considering Sabrina lives in Greendale, which is near Riverdale and was even mentioned during Jason Blossom's murder investigation. There's been much talk about Sabrina appearing on Riverdale, but clearly The Powers That Be thought her character could play a more central role.

The show is only in development at this point, but I'm hoping it becomes a reality. In the meantime, has anyone reached Dove Cameron?

Chrissy Teigen Gave Ivanka Trump a Savage Vocabulary Lesson

If you follow Chrissy Teigen on Twitter, you know she's notorious for her clapbacks and hilarious tweets. How she's able to make me laugh so hard with 140 characters or less is beyond me, but it's truly impressive.

After Ivanka Trump tweeted a photo with her nephew on Tuesday with a confusing caption, Chrissy—just being Chrissy—decided to clear everything up. "Cuddling my little nephew Luke... the best part of an otherwise incredible day!" Ivanka wrote. Otherwise? What is she trying to say?

Have no fear—Chrissy is here to put Ivanka in her place with the most savage vocabulary lesson I've ever witnessed. Chrissy responded, "'Otherwise' implies you did not like hangin with this baby." What a total legend.

Now you know, Ivanka.

How to Get Over Feeling Intimidated at the Gym

Feeling intimidated at the gym? Don’t let the rows of heavy machinery and herds of people who seem to know all about how to use them like a pro scare you away. The gym may make you feel really out of place, but the truth is that it’s a place for everyone. Here are simple ways to battle feeling intimidated when you really just want to squeeze in a workout.

1. Remember that everyone goes at their own pace

The gym — whether it be the rec center at your school, or a fitness studio near your apartment —is a space meant for people (including you!) to freely work out at their own level. “One of the most important things to remember is that everybody goes to the gym at their own pace,” says Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth College. “There might be people who are running on the ellipticals or treadmills at a high intensity for about an hour's time, and there are people who've never been to the gym before.” There will be a range of skills at the gym, from people who are long-time experts to people who can barely run a mile. Focus on your own growth!

2. Read instructions on the machinery

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The explanations are there for a reason! If you ever see someone using a machine flawlessly, chances are that they’ve read the instructions at one point before. Taking the time to learn about each machine is a foolproof way to make sure you are using them correctly and – most importantly – avoiding any injuries.

3. Go at odd times

If you go to the gym at peak times like when people are getting off work or done with classes for the day, chances are the place will be crowded. If you don’t wanna deal, try to go at times when you wouldn’t expect a ton of people, such as early mornings or late nights.

4. Distract yourself with music

Take yourself out of the gym (mentally) and focus on the music rather than worrying. Music is a great way to stop yourself from thinking about other people surrounding you at the gym, which can cause a lot of intimidation. Invest in a good pair of earbuds that won’t fall out as you exercise and make yourself a great playlist to listen to as you workout!

5. Dress to impress

If you look good, you’ll feel good! Lauryn Higgins, a senior at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, stresses the importance of dressing well to make yourself feel confident. “The one thing that has really elevated my confidence is the clothes I wear. Wearing any outfit that makes you feel confident is the one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, so buy a cute pair of leggings or a tank top, or borrow a friend’s if you're on a tight budget.”. Try places like Lululemon, Athleta, and Forever 21 to find cute workout outfits that are sure to boost your confidence!

6. Bring a friend

Squad up! When you have other people with you, it’ll help you feel less intimidated and more excited to workout with your friends. Marisa Pieper, a sophomore at Arizona State University, always makes sure to bring a friend to the gym. “I usually feel less intimidated when I have a friend with me who either knows what they're doing or is just down to learn and sweat with me!”

7. Have a game plan

Especially if it’s your first time, you may not know where to start. Beat this by coming up with a game plan before you step foot into the gym. Plan out what you want to do and for how long, so that way you know exactly what you’ll be doing when you get there.

With this advice, you’ll be feeling confident at the gym in no time!

This Cosplayer Dressed as Hot Disney Princes for a Whole Week

I definitely blame Disney movies for my unrealistic expectations of love, and just when I thought I moved past dreaming about animated princes, one Instagram user has drawn me back in. Cosmopolitan reports that cosplayer Jonathan Stryker kept busy earlier this month by dressing up as the leading men from everyone’s favorite Disney flicks. Spoiler alert: Disney princes are still hot in real life.

Stryker organized a “Disney Week” on his Instagram account, strykerkun, posting pictures of himself in Disney prince costumes for seven straight days. Although he featured some classic favorites like Aladdin and Prince Eric, he also dressed as some unlikely hunks, like Milo from Atlantis: The Lost Empire (my love for nerdy guys definitely traces back to Milo, tbh).

In an interview with BuzzFeed that he shared via Instagram, the veteran cosplayer explained how his interest in dressing as the Disney princes grew. "I see a lot of princesses but not many princes," he said. "I don't know why guys are so scared of the princes and they were, like, our childhood heroes."

22-year-old Stryker takes a completely DIY approach to his looks, making costumes from scratch and doing his own makeup in a process that can take up to 20 hours. Promoting body positivity in his finished products is also important to him, as he struggled with his weight in the past.

A post shared by J Stryker (@strykerkun) on

Also dressing as Tangled's Flynn RiderThe Emperor's New Groove's Kuzco and The Lion King's Simba, Stryker used his Hercules photo shoot as an opportunity to share how the animated character helped him deal with his own insecurities.

It's Disney Week! Next up, a handsome God, HERCULES! Just finished making this costume and shot it Today is a very special day to me. Exactly one year ago I met someone very special to me that would later help me understand who I truly am, much like Hercules in his quest to become a hero. And like with Megara, I'll forever have a place in my heart for this person Something I really loved about Hercules was the scene when Zeus tells Hercules that he has the chin of a God. In middle school, this kid would make fun of my big chin. I became very insecure about it for much of my life. Thanks to Hercules, I now see it differently: I have the chin of the Gods! SO FUCK YOU PEASANT ASSHOLE FOR MAKING FUN OF ME Final Disney character tomorrow! Who do you think it will be?  #jstryker #disney #waltdisney #disneyworld #waltdisneyworld #hercules #gaymer #gayfit #gaynerd #gaygeek #cosplay #cosplayer #cosplayers #god

Although his Disney week is over, visiting Stryker's Instagram to see his current cosplay looks is totally worth it. Props to him for reminding us that the Disney men deserve a lot of love too!

Trump Mentioned a Non-Existent African Country in a Speech, & Twitter Is Lit With Witty Responses

We all misspeak at important moments every now and then, and President Donald Trump is definitely no exception. In his latest vocal blunder, Trump apparently mentioned a non-existent country while addressing several African leaders during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Huffington Post says. I mean, it could happen to anyone...

"Nambia's health system is increasingly self-sufficient," Trump said in a speech listing some of the continent's recent achievements on Wednesday.

In what was clearly a case of Trump needing a pair of glasses, White House transcripts reveal that he likely mispronounced the name of the southwestern country Namibia.

Although the mistake was minor, the mistake was enough to make the internet graze over the speech's focus on Africa's "tremendous business potential." Instead, the error received so many witty responses that "Nambia" began trending on Twitter.

This was a harmless mistake, but Trump may not be leaving a very strong impression on these leaders. Earlier this week, his 40-minute speech that included threats of "totally destroying" North Korea sparked a popular GIF of the Zimbabwean committee looking pretty uninterested.

However, Trump's point about Africa's business potential is totally valid, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Particularly, Namibia is a huge mineral supplier.

Let's hope a pronunciation guide accompanies Trump's future speeches, just in case!

As A Venezuelan-American, I Struggle With Defining My Identity

Am I Venezuelan-American or American-Venezuelan? I don't think I will ever know which identity will be my first, because I never fully stand on one side of the spectrum.

September 6, 2001: All my toys are in a single luggage, at least all the ones mom allowed me to take with me. There was a woman in black using an odd stick to rummage through my things. Why was she taking out my toys from the luggage? They were mine.

My mom held my hand tightly finger trembling and whispered to me, "Calladita mami."

The woman in black eyed us, her dark brown eyes analyzing our movements, our reactions. She had my toys; my dad and mom bought me those toys. Her mouth moved and a strange sounds emitted. I looked at my mom and her eyes glossed. The woman in black zipped my luggage, filled with my toys and next thing I know mom and I were in a room. Yellow lights buzzed, and there were eight chairs, a desk and a man in black.

"Calladita mami." My mom's hands are still gripping mine, trembling. Time moved slowly. I sat on a chair. My mom talked to people in black. I was restless. Then I finally asked, "Y papá?"

I was six. At six years old, my struggle to find my identity began.

I was born in Venezuela but my life has been in America, and yet I've been told I am not an American. After 16 years of living in a country, I am still considered an outsider, an immigrant, an unwanted American.

Who am I? My mom says I am an American, too American for the people in Venezuela. My mom says I am a Venezuelan, too Hispanic for the people in America.

Something that is not taught in schools is how difficult it is to be a child immigrant. You're expected to act as an American in culture and values, but to remember that you are not an American; you are an immigrant from a foreign country.

I spent years denying I was from Venezuela so I can be deemed an American. Constant lies to others, but often to myself.

"Where are you from?"

America.

"Where were you born?"

America.

"What's your first language?"

American English.

When my younger brother was born, I hated him. He was born in America, so he truly was an American. Not an outsider. Not an immigrant. Not an unwanted American. At eight years old, all I wanted was to be considered a person in the country I lived in.

Being Venezuelan was an insult to my ears and yet it was all I ever was once I passed through the door of my home. At home I spoke Spanish, I said bendicion, I ate arepas, empanadas, cachapas, carne mechada, platanos and everything in between. I oozed Venezuelan culture, but the moment I stepped out of my home, I once again denied that I was even born in Venezuela.

I returned to Venezuela 11 years after I had arrived to America. I was welcomed with open arms to a family I did not remember. To cousins who knew my name but not my face, to homes that had stayed the same after my departure. In Venezuela I was referred as “La Americana” by family members, and people who claimed to have known me. In what was considered my country of origin, my home country, my nationality, I was not welcomed either.

I was too Americanized for Venezuela.

I was too Venezuelan for America.

I did not belong anywhere.

May 17, 2015: I stepped off the plane, my legs throbbed. The words around me were foreign yet I knew exactly what it said. I followed the crowd of drained travelers and join the herd in a massive room with people in black.

It was my turn. I handed over a brown passport and a green card. The man in black looked quickly at my green card and handed it back, “You don’t need this.” I clenched the card in my hand as I watched my brown passport get stamped.

Several days went by and I received the dreaded question.

“Where are you from?”

America.

“Okay, but where were you born?”

America.

“You don’t look American.”

I know, because I am actually from Venezuela.

“Oh? Really?! So you speak Spanish and English?!”

Yes.

“That’s so amazing, I wish I could be from two places.”

What?

It took a single person, a single compliment, a single moment and the glass wall I had put between my two identities shattered. This person was neither American or Hispanic. This person was Japanese and she wished she could have two identities.

As the glass wall laid by my feet, the six-year-old me said, “I am American. I come from the continent of America, I am from Venezuela and American. I am both, not one. Both.”

Identity; the fact of being who.

Who are you? Who am I?

I am a person. I am a girl. I am a girl who was born in Venezuela but lives in America. I am a girl who has an advantage than the average American and the average Venezuelan. I am a girl who is trilingual. I am girl with many dreams and goals. I am a girl who thinks in English but expresses herself with Spanish gestures. I am a girl who got sorted into both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

I am an American-Venezuelan. I am a Venezuelan-American. The order only depends on the language that I vocalize.

In the end my identity is more than a place. My identity is not a single word. My identity is a feeling, a being, a paragraph. I have learned that identity is not where I am but who I am.

A Fifth Grade Teacher Has Been Suspended After Asking Students to Justify the KKK's Actions

A fifth grade teacher in South Carolina is now on administrative leave after asking her students to imagine they were members of the KKK and justify their treatment of African Americans, The New York Times reports.

Teacher Kerri Roberts assigned her fifth graders at Oak Pointe Elementary School a controversial worksheet focusing on the Reconstruction period. Tremain Cooper, the uncle of one of Roberts' students, shared the assignment on Facebook, pointing out the question that asked the children to imagine they were KKK members.

"This is my little 10-year-old nephew's homework assignment today," Cooper wrote, even identifying Roberts in the post. "He's home crying right now...How can she ask a fifth grader to justify the actions of the KKK? We are contacting everybody from the school to the media."

The timing of the homework assignment is particularly unlucky, given the summer's deadly white nationalist march and similar racial incidents reported in elementary and middle schools this year.

School district spokesman Katrina Goggins revealed that Roberts was on leave and that the context of her assignment has led to an "ongoing investigation."

"South Carolina standards for fifth grade require lessons on Reconstruction and discriminatory groups, including the KKK," a statement from the school district read. "We must teach the standard, but we are taking steps to ensure this particular assignment will never be used again in District Five Schools."

Cooper has talked to the media about the issue, revealing in an interview, "I think the conversation needs to continue. The conversation should be elevated but yet go deeper. I think the larger issue of class assignments and curriculums for African-American children that are more culturally sensitive and less offensive is where the conversation should go."

When the homework assignment was discussed on Tuesday's The ViewCooper disapproved of the way the panel handled the topic and sent several Twitter messages to the show's account.

"Why ask a 10-year-old black child to project himself vicariously into an illogical and unscientific ideology to prove hate?" Cooper tweeted. "I would like you all to present the entire picture if addressing such sensitive topics to your audience. This is my family."

Roberts has not commented on the incident.

What You Should Be For Halloween, Based On Your Major

While the beginning of fall brings about thoughts of pumpkin spiced lattes for some and thrills at the leaves turning colors for others, there is one question that almost all of us have in common: What are we going to be for Halloween? There are so many options that can change every day depending on what our mood is; how can we possibly pick the best one? Well, maybe your studies can help you! We’ve compiled a list of costume ideas based on your college major.

Journalism

Those who major in journalism aren’t doing it for fame or money; they do it because someone needs to report on developing news and update the world on anything from politics to entertainment. Journalists love what they do! That’s not to say other majors don’t, but journalists tend to take their love for gathering information to the next level, so if this is your major, you might want to lean towards a costume that’s timely and relevant, like a punny political costume or even your j-crush! Have some fun with it too! Comical j-crushes work as well AKA Ron Burgundy is fair game.

Rory Gilmore is a cute and easy costume to choose, and very timely too! You could always go as a newspaper or be even more creative and be a newsie (take a night off from writing the news to spread the news!).

Business

Business majors are super put-together, extremely professional and don’t half-ass anything. Any costume that makes you look good is right up your alley. Stick with what you know and go with a professional theme. Whether you choose to make it sexy or go the comical route, you will give it your all and rock it!

A cute and hip mobster might be something you'd want to try! Superheroes are also right for you; incorporate the business attire with a hero like Superman/Supergirl or be Bruce Banner before the Green Guy shows up for that added doctor's coat.

History

Every history major has a soft spot for anything remotely history related, and they have a tendency to freak out about the subject as well. While you are sometimes quiet individuals, you love to have fun and are low-key funny and creative! When mixed together, history majors have the best costumes. You can go for a decade-inspired theme or any historical figure under the sun! Basically, anything that looks remotely period-esque is so you! Be careful though; you want people to be able to get or at least guess what you are. Don't go too obscure.

You could go with basically anything decades: a '60s hippy, a Greek goddess or possibly a popular '90s character.

Theater

Theater majors are super outgoing and get super into their craft. Your first or current love is anything Broadway so bring that dramatic flair with something from The Great White Way! Whether vintage or modern, Broadway never fails and neither do the movie remakes. And being a drama major, you’re going to knock it out of the park, possibly with some reenactments in tow.

Broadway has no limit to the amount of amazing characters you could portray and there's a musical/play for every personality. Be a sexy, yet villainous Velma from Chicago, pre- or post-makeover Sandy from Grease or ambitious and lively Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray. And who can't go wrong with the Schuyler Sisters from the ever-popular Hamilton

Pre-Med and Nursing

Anyone on the pre-med track and any nursing major has the ability to juggle 50 things at once while also staying on top of your schoolwork. You also have the patience to share thanks to all the readings you do, tests you take and schooling in general. Anyone on these tracks deserves a night to themselves, partying it up and making the most of a night off (or pushing your responsibilities back just this once). Go for any costume that’s fun, creative and completely different than scrubs.

Love 'em or hate them, the Jersey Shore girls are the epitome of a wild night out. Go out and channel their energy to find a new guido or just fist pump your way through Halloween! If they aren't for you, go with some punny costume like Facebook (write book on your face) or a cereal killer (you should be able to get that one).

Education

Although not all education majors go on to work with younger children, a lot do, so you must be young at heart. With that ability to connect with kids, you definitely have a soft spot for the lighthearted. Education majors would love dressing up as a Disney princess or someone from a popular kid-friendly movie. Trick-or-treating isn’t just for children!

Powerpuff Girls, little yellow minions, and princesses are all fair game. Go with your gut and revisit your childhood faves this year! Everyone will love you if you dress up as Kim Possible or Piglet.

English

English majors can sometimes get too caught up in your books. But like anyone else, you take pride in the work you’ve accomplished and always strive for more! This Halloween, you’re going to want to live out the best part of your major: exploring all those storybook characters! You’re constantly reading, and most likely have from a young age, so live out your dreams and prance around as a Bella or Hermione or even mix it up with a comic book character like Harley Quinn or Black Widow!

We are still in the midst of all the new superhero movies, so anyone from Iron Man to Katana to Spiderman to Black Panther are up for grabs! If Marvel and DC Comics aren't your thing or are too mainstream, any character from a book would work for you! Katniss or Hazel Grace are always good choices.

Political Science

Alright, you poli-sci majors! This is your year! The presidential elections of 2016 are in full swing, whether we like it or not, and you folks definitely do. This is your time to not only show your political prowess but also poke fun at all things you may not like in our government. You can be your favorite candidate, your least favorite candidate or a fictional political character who we wished was real so we could vote for her (or him).

Leslie Knope rules the world (or at least Pawnee). You and your squad could even be the whole Parks and Rec gang because they are active citizens in their local government and they are all iconic. Selina Meyer, the main character of VEEP is another strong female you can show off on Halloween.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

STEM majors are cool. You are smart. Like any other task you’re faced with, Halloween will be an easy ace for you. It’s also not something you’re stressing too much about; you know you’re going to look bomb and have a great time anyway. This year, you’ll want to wear a costume consisting of items you already own; that can mean a jersey or some ears with a matching outfit. Effortless and cool, like you.

Be your favorite athlete, whether it's Lebron James, Jonathan Toews or Christiano Ronaldo. You could also pull a Karen and wear sexy lingerie with some animal ears. Get your friends together with this one and you could recreate the whole Mean Girls cast when they go out on Halloween (duh)!

Halloween is prime time for your fun and creative side to come out! Whether you go out all of Halloweekend or just on All Hallows' Eve, we hope you find the perfect costume for you! And although you can dress however you want, whenever you want, “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress [however she wants] and no other girls can say anything about it.” That’s how the quote goes, right?

HC Wake-Up Call: Puerto Rico's Power Outage, A News Anchor's Total Meltdown & Police Fatally Shoot A Deaf Man

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

All of Puerto Rico Is Powerless After Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico early Wednesday morning, knocking out about 61 percent of the island's electricity. The Huffington Post confirms that the entire island is now without power. The area is still experiencing "ongoing storm conditions," preventing FEMA officials from observing Maria's full effects on Puerto Rico, but the power could be out for months. A government-issued curfew is currently in place until this Saturday in the aftermath of the devastating storm.

A MSNBC Host Summed Up How We All Feel When Technology Turns on Us

In between segments on MSNBC's The Last Word, host Lawrence O'Donnell just couldn't handle it when his earpiece began malfunctioning. Footage was recently released of the August incident showing how O'Donnell freaked over "insanity in my earpiece." The host began cursing up a storm until he finally begged his crew to "stop the hammering."

Of course, the Internet has gotten creative with his breakdown, which you honestly have to see to believe.

A Deaf Man Is Dead After Failing to Hear a Police Order

Despite neighbors telling him that a man was deaf and couldn't hear his orders to drop a metal pipe, an Oklahoma City police officer fatally shot Madgiel Sanchez when responding to a hit-and-run incident outside the victim's home on Tuesday night. Sanchez was holding a two-foot-long pipe when police interacted with him, walking towards the officer with the pipe in tow. A neighboring family ran towards the officer, warning him of Sanchez's disability. However, the officer and his backup allegedly ignored the neighbors, eventually killing Sanchez with several shots.

Neighbors say that Sanchez was never seen without the pipe, using it to shoo away dogs and communicate with people. Why police were targeting Sanchez is unknown. One of the officers is now on paid administrative leave.

What to look out for...

It's hard to focus on the world's goodness lately, but we should all do something to work towards peace today on the International Day of Peace. Smile at a stranger, hold doors open for others and try not to let your news feed bring you down today!

The Fosters' Take on DACA Couldn't Have Aired at a More Vital Time

Freeform's The Fosters is arguably one of the most progressive shows on air. They've covered anything and everything from foster children's likelihood to slip through the cracks, to sexuality and gender identity, to teen steroid and stimulant abuse, to school shootings, to TBIs, to abortion and more, all with respect and without sugarcoating. The show has once again hit it out of the park with their recent, and incredibly well-timed, arc on immigration.

Earlier this month, Donald Trump announced plans to end President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals bill. DACA recipients, sometimes referred to as Dreamers, are undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and were legally permitted to remain in the country. According to NBC, no new individuals are able to apply to receive protection through the program, but current recipients with expiration dates prior to March 5, 2018, will have some leeway—until October 5, they'll be able to apply for a two-year renewal. Trump has apparently advised the Department of Homeland Security that “DACA recipients are not enforcement priorities unless they are criminals, are involved in criminal activity, or are members of a gang," but let's remember that DACA recipients are heavily vetted and paid a nice fee, and that this is all very unlikely. Unfortunately, this hasn't stopped American citizens from launching attacks on DACA recipients.

In light of these recent events, I truly can’t believe how on point the timing of The Fosters' most recent storyline was. Reminiscent of the Milo Yiannopoulos protests at UC Berkeley, we see the arc begin with Callie Adams-Foster and her friend Ximena, an undocumented immigrant protected by DACA, planning to protest Shiloh McCullen, an activist who “spews hate speech,” at an upcoming lecture. While the two are making posters for the protest with Mariana, Callie's adoptive sister, Ximena is noticeably quiet. When Mariana asks her what’s wrong, Ximena tells them that her father is updating their family plan.

Mariana thinks she’s talking about their cell service. In reality, she's talking about her family's plans in the event that one of them gets deported. Given the current political climate, her father is transferring everything to be in Ximena's name and, should he and her mother be deported, Ximena will become her little sister’s legal guardian. As she relays how her parents want the two of them to stay in the U.S., no matter what happens to them, she begins to cry. This is one of many reminders of the humanity behind Dreamers that people often seem to forget. They're not here to break the law, and they're not here to have any effect on you. They're scared. Of losing their families, of returning to a country that they can't even remember, of leaving their friends and losing their educational opportunities. Steph, Callie’s adoptive mom, steps out at the end of this conversation and asks, “Plotting to overthrow the world, are we?” “If that’s what it takes.”

Image may be NSFW.

As the protest begins, students chant anti-hate messages from behind barricades while police in face shields patrol in front of them. Counter-protesters line up on the opposite side of the street. One crosses the barrier, shouting, “Shiloh McCullen’s a patriot! I hope you snowflakes melt in hell!” to which Ximena responds, “Hell is where the haters go...” He tells her to get out of his country, and spits at her before calling her third world trash and starting a “Build the wall!” chant. Sounds familiar, right?

The midseason finale, which shows the end of the protest and its aftermath, aired the same day that the end of DACA was announced. Each side is chanting their own relevant rhetoric, "we teach free speech" versus "immigrants are welcome here," until Ximena stands up with a megaphone. “The real enemies of free speech are flamethrowers like Shiloh McCullen, who seek to normalize hateful ideas that lead to violent actions against vulnerable communities," she begins, addressing the counter-protesters gracefully despite the way they've been speaking to and about her. "I know, I am an undocumented immigrant. And cruel, xenophobic language has taken its toll on me and my family. This is a learning environment, where a student’s humanity should not be challenged as some excuse for free vicious speech.” The same counter-protester yells, “America first! Go back to Mexico!” but she continues, “All over our country, people like me are scared. That is not my America. And you don’t need to be a citizen to recognize that.”

This speech should speak for itself, but what is most telling is that, despite the vitriol being hurled at Ximena, she tries to break through to the other side. She's eloquent. She's not crying, or hiding, or hurling insults back. When somebody attacks her, she continues on as if they hadn't even spoken, and she stands stronger than before. When you harass Dreamers, they don't go crawling back to the country they came from, despite your wishes. They stand up, and they call you out. The harder you push, the harder they, and their supporters, fight.

When Shiloh arrives, the students link arms to block her from entering. A counter-protester throws a small Molotov into the street from the students' side, creating chaos, and Callie tries to convince Ximena and the other protesters near her to leave. When they refuse, she runs anyway. The next time Callie sees Ximena, it’s at prom. Since Callie bailed, she hasn't been answering her phone calls and Callie's afraid that something happened to her. When she apologizes for leaving her, Ximena says, “You know what I’m really mad about? My dad’s got two jobs, and my mom works six days a week for me and Poppy to have opportunities, like going to college. Now these people that say that we take away their jobs? My parents do the jobs that they don’t wanna do. All we want is to be citizens, but with all of these hateful people coming out of the woodwork, if this is what America stands for? Then maybe this country was never great.”

Once again, they've hit the nail on the head. Just another quick reminder: DACA recipients are legally permitted to work in the United States, and unless their parents are working under the table, they are in fact paying taxes. If they took your job, it's because they were the better candidate (or because employers are taking advantage of their status and paying them less than what they deserve, in which case your anger is still misdirected *insert shrugging emoji here*). Hate is not what makes America great, and continuing on this path sure isn't going to make anything any better.

When Callie steps outside for some air, she finds ICE showing Ximena’s picture to prom-goers.

Callie says that she doesn't know her, and runs in to get Steph, a cop, who pretends to arrest Ximena for underage drinking in an attempt to get her past them due to jurisdiction. They tell her that Ximena made threats to the security of the United States during her speech at the protest and that they’ll just pick her up on release. Ximena's entire speech is transcribed above, and none of it sounds particularly threatening to me, but this wouldn't be the first time that an authority figure manipulated a situation to benefit their cause.

Callie overhears ICE's threat, and while Steph is busy with the officers, she grabs Ximena out of the back of the car. She and her ex, AJ, get her into the back of his car and leave the lot, but ICE follows after them. Despite the fact that Ximena has her DACA card and has done nothing worthy of arrest, the summer finale ends with the three just barely making it into a church for sanctuary.

The Fosters may only exist on Freeform, but real people are living this reality. As many as 800,000 could be in the near future, in fact. The timing of this episode made its plot all the more real and all the more important. Ximena could be your classmate, your coworker or your neighbor. She could be your customer, or you could be her client. Whoever she is, she's just as human as you. Please remember that the next time you want to tell her to go back to where she came from.

If you don't watch The Fosters, now would be the perfect time to catch up in preparation for their 2018 return, and if you do, you know how dramatic these arcs can get. I can't even begin to imagine what's going to go down to vindicate Ximena, what might change in light of the end of DACA, or what woke topic they'll tackle next.

It's safe to say that the beauty world has been all about eyes this year. 1. You want to wax your own brows

If you find that you're just too busy to rearrange your schedule to see an esthetician, this tutorial from YouTuber Dolce Candy shows you how to be your own brow bae. 3. You need a couple of pointers for brow basics

In this video for Sephora, celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge shows you how to create the most natural look ever by filling in and defining your brows with just one brow pencil. 4. You want to try out a subtly fuller brow

This is the perfect tutorial to learn how to channel your inner Cara Delevingne and try out a fuller look than you may be used to. If you're looking to amp up the drama in your makeup routine, get ready for your boldest brows ever. Seriously, Kim Kardashian would be jealous of the perfect look Bulgarian beauty blogger Denitslava shows you how to create. A couple of tools you'll want to have at the ready before delving into this tutorial are: an eyebrow spooli (although an old mascara wand that you've cleaned thoroughly works well too!) and liquid concealer with a brush applicator. For the best luck at recreating this look, we recommend the Anastasia Beverly Hills Bold Brow Kit ($36), which has the most tools similar to those Denitslava uses. Bonus: you'll have all the tools to touch up your brows with tutorial #1!

Now you know that no matter your brow needs are, you’re about five minutes away from your perfect arch!

Sean Spicer Claims Trump Was 'Supportive' of His Emmys Appearance

While many (like CNN, The New York Times and Twitter) were critical of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s appearance at the Emmys on Sunday, one person supposedly supported the cameo: President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Spicer talked about his former boss’s reaction to his appearance on television’s biggest night. “He was very supportive,” Spicer said of Trump. “He thought I did a great job. It was very reassuring.”

Many criticized Spicer’s appearance alongside host Stephen Colbert (and in front of Saturday Night Live impersonator Melissa McCarthy), saying the telecast normalized Spicer and aided in his attempt to rehab his image after a turbulent six months working for the Trump administration.

Others found the joke, or at least the audience’s reactions, downright hilarious.

Spicer has been making the media rounds as of late, including an interview with Jimmy Fallon, but he denies that he's trying to help his public image. “I feel very good with my image. I’m very happy with myself,” he said on GMA. “I am able to go out and explain a lot of things now, but I’m not on a tour. I’m out having some fun.”

While Trump may have been “supportive” of Spicer’s appearance at the Emmys, he took to Twitter to bash the award show's ratings.

How to Make Friends In a New City

This article has been syndicated from Written With Love, an InfluenceHer Collective Member. Read the full post here.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from starting fresh in a new city where I knew a grand total of zero people, it’s that making friends as an adult can be tiresome, daunting and at times, just plain awkward. Moving to a new place is one of the most exciting and liberating decisions a person can make, but for some, those initial months of getting settled in prove to be a real struggle. There were many a nights where I’d sit cross-legged on the balcony of my cozy downtown apartment, glass of wine in tow, questioning my life choices. My boyfriend is a social butterfly who has relocated numerous times throughout his life, so naturally, he had no trouble adapting to a new environment. I, on the other hand, am somewhat of an introvert who had just made a cross-country move for the very first time and was still trying to grapple with reality.

What I did eventually realize was that just like anything else in life, friends were not going to show up at your doorstep. You have to put in the effort to find them, nurture them, and perhaps most crucial of all – know exactly where to look. While you’re probably not going to find replacement besties in a few days or even weeks, these tried-and-true methods to make friends in a new city will give you somewhere to start.

Join a club, group or league that meets regularly.

Whether you choose to spend your free time running several miles a day (count me out for cardio) or with your nose buried in a riveting novel, there’s a pretty good chance that there’s a group of people out there with similar hobbies. A weekly fitness class presents the opportunity to be around the same group of people on a consistent basis, making it that much easier to strike up conversations and for friendships to blossom. Meetup is an app dedicated to helping people find like-minded individuals in your area, and in my opinion, is one of the best way to make friends in a new city. A small number of groups require a yearly fee in order to become a member, but the vast majority of them are free. If the idea of meeting with a group of complete strangers sends your anxiety through the roof, opt to partake in a happy hour.

Sift through social media for people with common interests.

I realize how unconventional – and to be quite honest, creepy – that sounds, BUT I have met some truly amazing humans from the plethora of Facebook groups I am a member of. Upon moving to Austin, I joined as many Facebook networking groups as I possibly could. If you’ve never taken the time to search through the ‘groups’ feature on Facebook, you’d be astonished at how many there are. A few months ago, I messaged a girl in a group called Austin Digital Jobs about how cool it was that she had her own freelance business after seeing her post in one of the groups – and yep, you guessed it – we’re friends now!

In another group, Girls New to Austin, I posted an open invitation to a girls-only pool party I was throwing at my apartment to commemorate the beginning of summer. I was a little nervous about blindly hosting an event because I wasn’t sure who would show up – if anyone at all – but when the day finally rolled around, a slew of fabulous ladies showed up and it turned out to be a wonderful time. Yay for friends! Since then, I’ve made a solid group of girlfriends that I can pretty much count on to show up places, especially when brunch is involved (see picture below).

Network. Network. Network.

I can’t stress this one enough. I’ve gone to several networking events put on by local organizations like Texas Young ProfessionalsBossBabes ATX, and Young Women’s Alliance, and I’ve met some really wonderful people throughout the process. I had a stack of about 200 business cards printed up last year when I changed website domains, and each time I go to a networking event, I make it a personal goal to hand out at least 10. Setting a goal like this forces you to break out of your bubble (which I am oh so guilty of) and chat with people you normally wouldn’t otherwise. You can network through your coworkers, through social media, through friends of friends – it doesn’t matter how you do it, just do it!

Kim Kardashian Thought She Had a Miscarriage When She Was Pregnant With North

Dedicated viewers of Keeping Up With the Kardashians know pregnancy wasn’t easy for Kim Kardashian. During both her pregnancies, she experienced placenta accreta, meaning doctors had to remove the placenta by hand because it didn’t detach from the uterine wall. She described the procedure on her blog as “the most painful experience of my life.”

However, fans are about to get the emotional, painful truth of how tough her pregnancy with daughter North really was during Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ 10th Anniversary Special, Refinery29 reports.

Kim knew pregnancy was not going to be easy for her, and she even considered freezing her eggs. According to Kardashian, when she first found out she was pregnant, she was more afraid than excited. "I remember calling [Kanye] and he thought a family member of mine had died, I was so hysterical,” she said. “I thought my life was over, that I was pregnant and [it was going to be] so hard for me."

Throughout her pregnancy with North, Kim endured extreme stomach pain and even thought she'd had a miscarriage. “At one point I thought I had a miscarriage, I was pretty certain about it," she said.

On Thanksgiving, she flew home to see her doctor and was told, "There's no heartbeat. You had a miscarriage." However, the next morning, during a private appointment, they found a heartbeat.

Now, four years later, North West is an adorable big sister to little brother Saint, with another sibling on the way. Although this time, Kim and Kanye opted to use a surrogate.

The KUWTK 10th Anniversary Special includes unaired footage of this turbulent time in Kim's life, so be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.

Are Tobacco Companies Targeting Military Members & People with Mental Illnesses?

We all learn about certain vices both in and out of the classroom —but it’s not until you get older and you realize the scope of things that you brushed off in middle school health class can impact you or someone you love immensely. And yes, that includes smoking. That's why Truth Initiative, a national organization dedicated to smoking prevention, re-launched their campaign to jumpstart their goal of achieving a smoke-free society.

“This generation is always on,“ Jasmin Malone, the managing director of marketing for the Truth Initiative told Her Campus. “They’re always looking up new information and so, there’s no new news.”

Rather than relying on fear-based advertisements intended to scare all away from cigarettes, the campaign uses relatable videos, social media outlets and even dance party tours to advocate for the millennials to become the first nonsmoker generation—something of which has been affirmed by the teen smoking rate which has been at its lowest of 6 percent.

However, the campaign has also started to investigate a new controversy with Big Tobacco (a collective moniker used to refer to the largest tobacco companies in the stock exchange): In a report asking whether "if it is just business or is it exploitation?" the organization assesses how the industry sees members of the military and people with mental illness as the latest targeted group of potential customers.

The Truth campaign recently exposed that Big Tobacco gave free cigarettes to psychiatric facilities, a concerning fact coupled with the statistic that individuals with mental illness or suffering from substance abuse account for 40 percent of the cigarettes that are sold in the United States today.

The advocacy program also found that there are only 92 smoke-free psychiatric facilities in the country, and unfortunately, those who suffer from depression, anxiety or ADHD are more likely to become smokers and have a harder time than most quitting.

“Psychiatric facilities are looking at what’s best for their patient and culturally, there’s no stigma around smoking,” Malone said.

This was a sentiment echoed by rapper Logic, who spoke in the campaign video: “You see that it’s considered normal.” Logic, who suffered from depression and anxiety, even has a song narrating his former addiction to nicotine called “Nikki."

Truth says that many people with mental illness use smoking as a method of easing stress and anxiety, despite the fact that nicotine has been shown to increase heart rates and lower the amount of oxygen being supplied to the brain.

Addiction to nicotine and the traditional cigarette has also affected the military, as Big Tobacco in industry documents, have referred to them as “less educated”, being “part of the wrong crowd”, whilst also holding “limited job prospects” once they return from duty.

According to Truth, Big Tobacco sees the military as a “captive audience” while they are on base. Whether it's free cigarettes sent to them on duty in Saudi Arabia, free merchandise sent from tobacco companies (going to bases under the guise of providing entertainment) or even sending them holiday greeting videos from their family members, Truth finds that their tactics are often used to promote cigarettes with the strong suggestion of marketing their tobacco products.

Big Tobacco’s strategic marketing campaign to the military members on base could also be reflected in that 38 percent of US military smokers who only started smoking after they had enlisted.

The government has started to become more involved in the tobacco industry’s business, aside from limiting how companies advertise cigarettes to the military. Back in July, the FDA announced that they were considering lowering the amount of nicotine allowed to be in a cigarette — something that dramatically lowered tobacco stocks, which rely on the traditional cigarette. Movements in the tobacco industry have also been affected by the introduction of other forms of smoking (i.e. the e-cigarette, menthol cigarettes, and new smokeless cigarettes named the iQos.)

Despite the traditional cigarette starting to be seen as outdated and these newer types of cigarettes being seen as less harmful, Malone still said that substance abuse of any kind can still be detrimental to overall health: “Our position is nicotine in the brain is not a good idea, regardless of the mechanism. It keeps your brain from developing, so the goal is to never have people pick up a cigarette.”

Even with the new ways people are being introduced to cigarettes and the other communities being targeted by tobacco companies (ranging from African-Americans to the LGBTQ communities), Malone argues that the first step to combating the more insidious advertising is to arm young people with education.

“Education is one of the most powerful tools," Malone said. "We ask people to watch our ads and use any social media platform to share it.”

In addition to the Truth Initiative, there are many health organizations advocating smoking prevention and providing tools to help those who want to quit do so, in a healthy and safe manner. So what can smokers and nonsmokers alike do now to learn and become part of the movement? It stars with education and then, as Malone said, they can “Enlist and join to become part of the solution!”

You Have to Watch This Adorable Two-Year-Old Review Fenty Beauty

It seems like the entire world can’t stop talking about Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty. With an impressive 40 shades of foundation to choose from, Rihanna has ensured that there truly is something for everyone in her collection. The line has already gained a substantial fan base, one that includes two-year-old Samia Ali

While most two-year-olds are just learning how to walk and talk, Samia is busy learning to blend and highlight. In the mini-makeup guru’s latest Youtube video, Samia gives her 62 thousand followers a tutorial that includes some fan favorites from the Fenty line, including the foundation, lip gloss and a lot of highlighter.

We’re not the only ones who have taken note of how absolutely adorable the little lady and her genuine love of makeup is. Rihanna herself has dubbed this the “best review yet,” and posted a condensed version of the video to her own personal Instagram, hurdling the baby star right to internet fame.

check out the best review on @fentybeauty yet!!! thanks @samiaslife

A post shared by badgalriri (@badgalriri) on

Lets be honest, we can all relate to Samia. With the ever-changing makeup trends, I also constantly wonder whether it would be easier to just apply highlighter all over my whole face as well. Who hasn’t thought “can I eat it?” at least once when using the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette.

Also, if you’re like me and had the daily battle with your mother of whether you were allowed to wear lipstick to class, you might be wondering how Samia got her hands on this beautiful, designer makeup. Well, her mom is Latoya Forever, a Youtuber who boasts an impressive 1.3 million followers. Latoya recently made a similar video to her daughter’s, and the similarities between this mother-daughter duo are remarkable.

Lets hope that Samia and her mom continue to share their love of makeup and making videos with us!

Emilia Clarke Just Dyed Her Actual Hair Khaleesi Blonde

Game of Thronesfans are obsessing over Emilia Clarke’s new hair… and its not for the reason you may think. Clark recently posted a photo to Instagram featuring her short, bleached bob that's basically identical to the color she rocks while playing the Mother of Dragons.

In her post, Clarke tags the popular show and explains that her new look is created by Kev Alexander and Candice Banks, the duo behind the glorious Khalessi wig and the rest of Dany's iconic hair for the past seven seasons. Banks also posted a photo of the actress in the process of getting her hair done (which is currently the only photo on Banks' Instagram account, so you know it must be important).

And so the process begins.....#kevalexanderhair

A post shared by candice banks (@candicebanks74) on

Fans aren’t just excited that the actress is starting to embody her character in real life. Many are speculating that this look has more to do with the next season of the show, and less to do with Clark’s personal style. As we've come to learn, hair is an important part of Game of Thrones because it often holds symbolic meaning. Sophie Turner recently divulged to Refinery29 that Sansa’s hair is often representative of “people she’s learning from, mimicking or inspired by.” With such a complex plot and story in each episode, this truly shows that each and every detail in Game of Thrones is carefully thought out and filled with meaning.

What do you think? Does Clarke’s hair change signify some interesting future for Dany, or did the actress just realize how good the blonde color looked on her after years of wearing that wig? Only time will tell, but, in the wise words of Damien from Mean Girls, "Her hair is full of secrets."

Trump Announces New Expanded Economic Sanctions on North Korea

Earlier today, President Donald Trump released his latest executive order and, according to The Washington Post, it will allow the Treasury Department to enforce economic sanctions on North Korea and anyone who does business with what he calls the “rogue regime.”

If you’re completely lost (we don’t blame you), check out this quick overview on everything that’s gone down since January. It's a lot.

Trump’s promise to “totally destroy” North Korea in his speech at the UN General Assembly earlier this week, Vox reports, was viewed as “counterproductive” and potentially “dangerous” by researchers. In his speech, he said: “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.”

According to the BBC, North Korea's top diplomat, Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, said Mr Trump's comments were like "the sound of a barking dog." Implying that there might not be much bite behind them.

However, this threat of economic destruction can be considered a threat of total destruction, according to experts. For starters, President Trump and his administration has support in China. Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed Chinese banks to stop conducting business with North Korea as well. Particularly, as Reuters noted, the Trump administration "blacklisted" 16 companies from China, Russia and Signapore for trading with coal, oil and metal entities in North Korea.

Pyongyang’s nuclear program has been advanced through its usage of international finances, reports NPR. Shutting down their money supply is reportedly one way to control and isolate the North Korean regime.

As today is the International Day of Peace, as proposed by the UN. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next — and, of course, wait for Pyongyang’s response.
