The Inventor of the Red Solo Cup Has Died at Age 84

Parties and red Solo cups go hand-in-hand, and it's hard to imagine a world without either one in it. Sadly, the inventor of the popular red cup, Robert Leo Huselman, died at age 84 on Dec. 21, according to PEOPLE, leaving behind a legacy no one will forget.

Huselman was the mastermind behind the iconic red cups used at parties across the world, meaning we have him to thank for the useful fill lines within the cup and their ideal cone-shape that makes them perfect for drinking games. He also created the Traveller Lid, which is a product that turns the red solo cup into something you can take on the go (unless it's carrying alcohol, in which case you should probably just stay at the party). Without his work with the Solo company, which began when he was just 18 years old, we probably wouldn't have the classic Toby Keith song "Red Solo Cup."

Beyond his immeasurable contribution to college party culture, his obituary states that Huselman was very philanthropic and had a strong love for music.

Next time you're out celebrating at a party, be sure to pour one out for the man who directly impacted most of your Friday and Saturday nights with his invention of the little red, plastic cup.

The 25 Most Incredible Moments for Women in 2016

$

We often nod our heads in agreement when we hear the phrase no news is good news. Between school shootings, a ridiculously horrible presidential campaign and several soul-sucking instances of sexism and racism, it's tempting to just shut off our phones and hide from the news at all costs. But when you look back at the momentous events that took place in 2016, a pattern emerges: W-o-m-e-n. Women kicking ass. Women making history. And women just plain owning everything they do.

Let’s take a look back at these empowering women who are proving day after day that girls run the world.

1. Women ran the Senate after a winter blizzard

After a blizzard in Washington D.C. last January, female participants were the only ones to show up to the Senate meeting. “As we convene this morning, you look around the chamber, the presiding officer is female. All of our parliamentarians are female. Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female,” said Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

2.  23-year-old Yara Mowafy combatted college homelessness at George Mason University

As a newly minted freshman in 2011, Mowafy addressed an issue overlooked by her university's campus.  Two years of research and proactivity later, Mowafy spearheaded the institution of a food pantry for college students seeking food, employment or housing assistance.

3.  Amara Hajeed challenged the stereotypes of Muslim women in America with the ‘Hijab Project’

Hajeed was interviewed by Good Morning America for a project she began at age 16 that works to challenge Islamophobia. Participants of the Hijab Project wear a hijab for a day and then share their stories on her website. Now a freshman at Brown University, Hajeed works to build a common ground among Muslims and non-Muslims with these Hijab Project stories.

4. The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team filed a wage discrimination suit

Players Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, Becky Sauerbrunn and Megan Rapinoe (all coming off of a World Cup championship) were the force behind the formal complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Appearing on the Today show, these soccer stars decided to stand up for women and their rights both on and off the field.

5. Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna was accepted to eight Ivy League schools

As a daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Augusta set her sights on the ultimate American dream—and she achieved it. Augusta was accepted to not only Harvard, but also Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, Cornell AND the University of Pennsylvania. Talk about a ‘back-up school.'

6. Harriet Tubman was announced as the new face of the $20 bill

While we may have to wait a few decades to officially see the bills in circulation, this event is a historic recognition for not only women, but black Americans as well. Tubman is set to share the bill face (front and back) with our nation’s seventh president, Andrew Jackson.

7. JoLynn Smith instituted a financial literacy program in her high school that spread throughout the Midwest

After overcoming verbal apraxia, this 18-year-old wanted to not only make her voice heard, but have it mean something. So, she transformed her knack for numbers into a full-blown financial literacy program at her high school in Lenexa, Kan. Since its inception, Smith’s program has allowed over 33,000 high schoolers to take courses in finance, wealth building, credit and budgeting.

8. The United State of Women Summit—it happened!

Kerry Washington, Nancy Pelosi and even our nation’s First Lady led discussions on issues of gender equality. A nation of women convened (as well as watched via livestream) at the White House to stand united in the face of violence, unequal pay and unequal education. Cue the round of applause heard around the world.

9. Amelia Gapin became the first transgender woman featured on the cover of Women’s Running magazine

Gapin is an expert long-distance runner and was grateful for the chance to represent the transgender community in such a public light. During Gapin’s transition, running was an outlet—and for that to be featured on a magazine dedicated to women was the ultimate honor.

10. Hillary Clinton became the first woman in history to receive a major political party nomination

When Clinton received her Democratic nomination for the presidency, she claimed to have put the biggest crack in the glass ceiling. While Clinton was unable to secure the oval office, she took a step that historic night in July for women around the world—a step towards hope, progress and equality.

11. Yuriko Koike became the first woman elected governor in the city of Tokyo

Koike didn’t just win the previously male-dominated position—she annihilated her competition. She beat her opponent (without the help of her political party) by over a million votes. This momentous event showed a nation’s need for change regardless of the gender.

12. Women (and men) gathered around the world to Free the Nipple

In August, the streets from Manhattan to Hermanus, South Africa were lined with topless protesters. Over 60 cities participated in the International GoTopless Day—fighting the negative stigmas that surround women’s nudity and its implications of gender inequality.

13.  Rayouf Alhumedi fought Islamophobia with an Apple emoji

After failing to find a representative emoji like her friends, 15-year-old Alhumedi decided to propose her own emoji to Apple featuring her hijab. She presented her research on the importance of Muslim inclusivity to the Unicode Consortium in November and they expect the emoji to be available come 2017. Maybe Alhumedi and Hajeed (#4) should team up!

14.  A 9-year-old in Charlotte spoke out after the shooting of Kieth Lamont Scott

As tensions rose and divisions cemented in Charlotte, the voice of Zianna Oliphant was heard scolding the city leaders for not just one, but continued injustice. Through tears Zianna is heard defending the city’s protesters, “We do this because we need to and have rights.”

15.  Women put an end to Poland’s ban on abortion

Women were outraged over the legislation in Poland banning the right to abort pregnancy unless the mother’s life was threatened. So, they took to the streets with signs and vigor—forcing the government to reconsider the amended legislation. These women showed the (girl) power of peaceful protest.

16. Michelle Obama’s ‘Let the Girls Learn Initiative’ took the form of the ‘We Will Rise’ documentary

The film follows FLOTUS to Morocco and Liberia, where she meets school-aged girls discussing their dreams of education and future careers. The film uncovers the hardships girls in developing countries face to get a proper education—and in turn, We Will Rise imparts useful information onto those girls on how to take control of their future.

17. Minority women were elected to the Senate

In the turmoil that surrounded Donald Trump’s election to the presidency, the Senate was our source of light. In November, Nevada elected the first Latina Senator, Catherine Cortez Masto (D) to the Senate. Two Asian American women, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois (D) and Kamala Harris of California (D), were elected to the Senate. In addition, Oregon elected Kate Brown (D), the Senate’s first openly LGBTQ+ governor. Just add these women to the list of senators who will show up after a blizzard come January!

18. Kellyanne Conway became the first woman to run a Republican presidential campaign—and then she won it!

After growing up in a household run by her mother, her grandmother and two of her mother’s unmarried sisters—it comes as no surprise Conway went on to achieve magna cum laude at Trinity College and then a law degree from George Washington University. Some may call her a magician, others a miracle worker. Here at HC, she’s just Olivia. Pope, that is.

19. Sorority sisters disaffiliated in response to transgender inequality

Kristen Reeves and 46 other members of the Delta chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi at Tufts University deactivated their membership after hearing they could not extend a bid to a transgender woman. It appears that only three National Panhellenic sororities in the U.S. have a transgender protection policy included in their bylaws. It looks like the former members of Tufts’ AOII are looking to redefine the definition of sisterhood.

20. Ashley Graham had her barbie made to measure

At Glamour’s Women of the Year Summit in LA, Graham unveiled a barbie perfectly tailored to the plus-size model’s very own body measurements. Graham said goodbye to the ‘thigh gap’ and hello to loving your curves!

21. Ellen Degeneres received the Presidential Medal of Freedom

In late November, Degeneres was honored with the medal for her ability to lift spirits and bring joy into the lives of her viewers. As one of the last honorees President Obama will ever induct, he said of Degeneres that her individual efforts show us joy, laughter and love can brighten the world as long as “we just keep swimming.”

22. Loyola Marymount students fight tampon’s ‘luxury tax’

It’s hard to imagine that using a tampon to appease your monthly cycle would be considered a luxury—however pads and tampons by law are considered a luxury item. Since luxury items are luxuriously taxed, two women at Loyola Marymount University, Emily Campbell and Maddy Jones, are working to fight the injustice. GoFund their efforts as they help support those who can’t afford this particular luxury.

23. A 9-Year-Old Girl will be featured on National Geographic’s January cover

Avery Jackson will be featured as the magazine’s first transgender cover model. Jackson is a precursor to the magazine’s larger documentary, Gender Revolution. Jackson is quoted on the cover, ““The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to be pretend to be a boy.”

24. 18-year-old Aria Watson spoke out against Trump via art

As a student of Clatsop Community College in Oregon, Watson completed her final project of Intro to Photography by painting the bodies of mostly-nude women with quotes from the president-elect. Watson said the way Trump talks about women made her sick—so she decided to channel her emotions through her art. Watson is partnering with The Outrage to sell merchandise inspired by her art, and 15 percent of its proceeds will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union. In Trump’s name, no less. This is the art that speaks to you.

25. If you need a reminder of the growing number of women making a change—there’s an app for that!

SPARK, an organization created and run by women between the ages of 13 and 22, teamed up with Google last January to create an app called the Field Trip App. Every time you enter a space where a woman did something monumental (like the 24 who now stand before you) it’ll alert you! Girl power, it’s everywhere!

Star Wars Fans Will Miss You, Carrie Fisher

By Jessica Dulaney

Carrie Fisher passed away on Tuesday, and even in a year plagued by unexpected celebrity deaths, this loss is astounding. We have lost not only a princess and a general, but also a funny, fearless, friendly woman who made her corner of the galaxy a brighter place for six decades.

Fisher’s most famous role as Leia Organa in Star Wars is singular, an arresting embodiment of wit, grace, and bravery. Throughout the original trilogy, Fisher fashions a full-fledged heroine in Leia, one who dodges stereotypes to be powerfully complex. While the Walt Disney Company may own the Star Wars franchise today, Leia Organa is no Disney princess. She does not bat her eyelashes or pine for a hero—she holds her own. Her earliest scenes in A New Hope immediately cement the strength of her character. Captured and taken to her enemies’ ship, she not only maintains her composure but also bristles with defiance. She scoffs at Grand Moff Tarkin’s bluster with a raise of her brows and a tone of withering condescension. She looks Darth Vader dead in the eye and defies him. Even after the Empire obliterates her planet and subjects her to torture, she refuses to break. In fact, once Han Solo and Luke Skywalker arrive to rescue her, she helps them escape the Empire as much as they help her. These scenes foreshadow the tone maintained throughout the trilogy, as Fisher stands shoulder-to-shoulder with her male co-stars. Her star power shines undeniably bright.

Fisher’s performance in 2015’s The Force Awakens further underscores her phenomenal talent. Now a general for the Resistance, Leia remains a bastion of warmth, strength, and wisdom. Despite the tremendous personal loss she faces at the hands of the First Order’s toxic regime, she has not lost her spark of hope or her tenacity. Fisher’s return to the iconic role is marked by gravity and grace and poignantly depicts the heroine’s struggle to persevere.

Off-screen, Fisher stole the show with her characteristic charm and brashness, her enthusiasm for her work always at the forefront. With service dog Gary in tow, she appeared on red carpets, daytime television, late night talk shows, and more. In interviews, she spoke candidly about her struggles with addiction and mental illness. She was always in good spirits, cracking jokes about her weight, her metal bikini, and her relationships with the cast and crew. She kept an impish gleam in her eye and a mischievous smile on her face. Online, legions of fans lovingly dubbed her their “space mom” and followed her escapades on social media. Her Twitter account teemed with her random observations, bits of wisdom, and thoughts on current events, usually communicated through her creative use of emojis, a language that even C3PO himself might have trouble deciphering. Fisher lovedStar Wars, but even more, she loved its fans and was clearly overjoyed to play along.

For decades, Carrie Fisher has shined in her role as Leia Organa and as an ambassador for the Star Wars franchise, and she has played a vital part in making those stories ring true for generations of fans around the world. Her legacy will always be linked with a galaxy far, far, away – and it’s unlikely that she would have minded. In her 2008 book Wishful Drinking, she recalls that George Lucas forbade her from wearing underwear because it would be dangerous to wear in space. Amused, Fisher quips that “no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”

As far as I am concerned, so be it. On December 27, 2016, Carrie Fisher, beloved actress, activist, and author, was drowned in moonlight and strangled by her own bra and is now one with the Force.

She will be missed.

Rest in peace, Carrie. Thanks for everything, and may the Force be with you.

5 Things To Do Over Winter Break That Will Make Spring Semester A Breeze

After the final exams, papers and projects of fall semester, we’re all a little burned out. We just want to go home and do absolutely nothing, which obviously means sleeping, watching Netflix and eating home-cooked meals. But once we’ve recovered from a difficult semester and the holidays are over, it’s time to look forward to a new semester, a fresh start if you will.

Spring semester can be an exciting time: the weather eventually gets warmer, campus becomes beautiful with blooming flowers and trees and…we get sucked into the same old cycle of stress and being busy. To ease some of that worry, start preparing for spring semester during winter break. We’ve got five ways you can make spring semester a breeze starting right now.

1. Relax

After the stress of those final tests, papers and projects you had to prepare for, write and create, your brain definitely needs a break! Your body and mind both deserve a little rest right now.

“Read something purely for pleasure, like a magazine or new novel,” says Kelci Lynn Lucier, author of the book College Stress Solutions and previous blogger for "The College Experience" at US News & World Report. “Catch up on sleep. Get some exercise and try to eat a little healthier than you might have at school.”

But don’t relax too much. There are likely some school-related things you shouldn’t put off because those to-dos will just hover over you like schoolwork can during the semester.

“If you have school-related tasks you need to get done, like providing information to the financial aid office, get them done as soon as possible,” Lucier says. “Then you can really relax and not feel the weight of pending tasks all break. If you can't get your to-dos done in advance, however, decide what date you'll get them done so that you can mentally check out until then.”

2. Revive

And we mean both physically and mentally. Not only do you need to rest your body and mind, but you also need to rejuvenate them for the upcoming semester.

“Students can really benefit from a nice mix of activity and rest,” Lucier says. “True, you probably need to catch up on some sleep. But you also probably need some exercise over the next few weeks as well. Aim for a nice balance of rewarding activities, like going for a run or shoveling snow from your neighbor's driveway, that help you relax but still keep you engaged.”

Lucier also points out that streaming movies all day always sounds awesome, but you may not feel so great afterward. Other options include volunteering somewhere local or helping family members with their to-dos.

“Think about what really makes both your heart and mind feel good, and then get started,” Lucier says.

Focusing on something that you value and love will keep your mind stealthy while also giving you a little break. You’ll still be productive while relaxing and enjoying yourself.

3. Think ahead

Winter break is the perfect time to start thinking about and planning ahead for summer internship and job opportunities. Margeaux Biché, a junior at Barnard College, plans to start thinking about her summer opportunities over winter break.

“I'm trying to look into any and all internship opportunities for the summertime over the break,” says Margeaux. “If you don't necessarily apply for them, it will at least be helpful to have all of the dates applications are due and know what other things you need to submit for the applications.”

And if you take the next step and actually get all of the applications done, knowing that you've done all of that and that it won't come back to haunt you late in the semester while you're scrambling to finish up the term will be so worth it.

4. Bond

Both during times of stress and times of relaxation, having supportive people around you can help you to revive and prepare for the upcoming spring semester.

“I'd challenge students to figure out who—family or otherwise—is supportive of you,” Lucier says. “Spending time feeling loved, appreciated and supported is particularly important after you've just finished an undoubtedly long semester.”

We all work so hard and for so long at school that self-care often gets knocked down on our priority list. Lucier reminds us that winter break can be a great time to ensure you get some much-needed TLC.

Related: 15 Signs You're Really Taking Advantage of This Whole Winter Break Thing

5. Prepare

As the end of winter break draws near, it’s important to start preparing academically for the upcoming spring semester. How to do that? “The best way to prepare academically for the upcoming semester is to have an honest conversation with yourself,” Lucier says.

Evaluate your school habits with the following questions: What went well for you last semester? What didn't go well? What might you need to do differently? What do you need to keep consistent? What kind of setup helps you study and perform at your best?

“In order to thrive academically, you need to understand yourself academically,” Lucier says. “Figure out what works for you and then plan to build or keep those systems in place next semester.”

For example, Lucier says if you know you need quiet time and space to really learn class material, then look at your weekly schedule and figure out when, where and how to make that happen. If you have problems with deadlines, work out a schedule for getting things done a little at a time in advance of a due date. Or find a study partner who you know will keep you accountable.

More logistically, Margeaux swears by a tip she learned from a friend.

“I have a friend who swears by writing all of her tests/exams/papers and regular assignments in her planner before the semester starts,” she says. “If you know what your classes are, this is a really great thing to do!”

If you already have your syllabus, you probably also have your book list. Take some time to order all of your books that you'll be renting or buying for the term to save you some stress during those first few weeks of the semester.

It’s easy to say that you’ll do better next semester, but many of us find ourselves caught in the same stressful and busy position semester after semester. Use these tips over winter break to prepare for your best semester yet. Good luck and rest up, collegiettes!

3. Incorporate glitter into EVERYTHING

4. Drunk-text your emotions to people

5. Decide on the most unrealistic New Year's resolutions

6. Drink a disgusting amount of champagne

7. Post a super-emotional status about the past year—on every social media outlet possible

8. Kiss someone you don't like, just because

9. Or kiss your ex when the ball drops, just because

10. Get stupidly shitfaced

11. Stay up 'til midnight when you'd much rather be asleep

12. Drunkenly confess everything to everyone before the year ends

16 Things That Need to Be Left in 2016

2016 had its great moments—the first plus size Barbie was released, Joe Biden memes graced our world, and people are actually starting to believe that climate change is a thing. But, it also wasn’t the greatest year on record. Here are 16 things that need to be left in 2016.

1. Teva x Ugg

No, just no.

2. High-fashion Crocs

Actually, Crocs should have been left in 2002.

3. The presidential election

Don’t even get us started.

4. #TightsAsTops

We don’t even know why this is a thing.

5. Threatening to leave the country when things go wrong

How about staying and facing your problems?

6. Fake news stories

And believing them. Check your sources!

7. Police shootings

This isn’t going to solve anything.

8. Anti-feminism

Let’s be women empowering other women.

9. Body shaming

Like some designers refusing to style plus size model Ashley Graham for her Vogue shoot.

10. Injustice towards sexual assault survivors

Like trying to pay them to withdraw their Title IX complaints. Disgusting.

11. Disturbing hazing rituals

This frat had pledges throwing up on each other. That’s just so wrong.

12. Bra inserts being used as makeup sponges

Bras are for your boobs, not your face.

13. Yik Yak

Anonymous threats aren’t really our thing.

14. Nutella as hair dye

Stop this madness.

15. Wishing for an abortion

You may have heard of Lena Dunham’s comment that she wished she had an abortion... yeah, abortion isn't a joke, no matter where you stand on the issue.

16. Blatant racism

Racism in any form is bad, especially when YouTube star Saleh got kicked off a flight for speaking Arabic

The 8 Best Shows That Came to Netflix in 2016

$

0

As 2016 comes to a close, it's the perfect time to reflect upon the great things the past year has brought us—namely, the best of what came to Netflix this year. Binge-watching these shows is our favorite thing to do... especially in a year when we needed SO much escape from reality.

Here are just a few of our favorite additions from this year:

1. Gilmore Girls: A Day in the Life

We waited most of the year for the release of the Gilmore Girls revival episodes, and it surely didn't disappoint. In November, we were able to follow the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore through four seasonal episodes filled with their usual witty banter and endless cups of coffee. Even though some of us weren't very happy with how things played out (team Jess, anyone?), it was still a magical moment seeing our Gilmore Girls doing their thing again.

2. Stranger Things

Stranger Things has been one of those shows people just can't stop talking about. After the disappearance of 12-year-old Will, we follow the town as they search for him with the help of the psychokinetic Eleven. The first season was released on Netflix in July, and the number one thing we're looking forward to in 2017 is season two.

3. Fuller House

In February, Netflix debuted their Full House revival series, Fuller Houseand it was a major hit! We loved seeing the Tanner family adjust to some major life changes while still using some of the same punchlines and popular phrases we grew up with. Luckily for us, Netflix continued the revival series past season one so we've gotten to enjoy even more moments with the family we've loved for years.

4. Bring It On

What better way to celebrate 2016 than by watching the Bring It On movies? Netflix added the original Bring It On, as well as a few of the later versions so now we can cheer alongside some of our favorite cheerleaders.

5. Sixteen Candles

The classic Sixteen Candles was added last May, making it even easier for us to watch Sam struggle through her sixteenth birthday.

6. A Walk to Remember

What better way to spend a Friday night than watching a classic love story and crying into your pint of ice cream? Netflix finally added A Walk to Remember in June, and we've been watching it since.

7. Mean Girls

The "groolest" movie was released on Netflix in July: Mean Girls. We've probably all seen it a thousand times already, but it just keeps getting better and better each time we watch it.

8. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Andie Anderson is basically goals in every way, and now we can watch her try to ruin her relationship with Ben again and again, since Netflix added this hit in October. We have so much to learn from this movie!

Netflix also released new seasons of some of our favorite shows throughout, including New Girl, House of Cards, Bob's Burgers, Grey's Anatomy and much more. With such an amazing list of new movies and shows released this past year, we can't wait to see what Netflix will bring us in 2017.

12 Things We Lost In 2016

$

0

Are we pregaming for the apocalypse or was 2016 just cursed? Was this year simply a losing game with no chance to win? Whatever the answer we survived it (knock on wood), but not without our losses. Here are 12 things we lost in 2016:

1. Vine

How many laughs did we get out of Vine? So so many. We wouldn’t have the term "on fleek" if it wasn’t for Vine. Still, Twitter decided to shut it down. Even though not many people used the app anymore, a lot are loath to see it go.

2. An Oscar-less Leonardo DiCaprio

The internet lost a great meme that day. When Leo won an Oscar for The Revenant, we all cheered and cracked open a bottle of champagne. But we were secretly sad we couldn’t make fun of him anymore for not having one.

3. Harambe

When the Cincinnati Zoo had to kill a silverback gorilla because a child had fallen into its exhibit, the internet was outraged. While some had actual conversations about what could've been done to avoid the death of the gorilla, others would turn it into an internet meme that would become v relevant. More on that later.

4. Celebrities

So many amazing celebrities. David Bowie. George Michael. Prince. Leonard Cohen. John Glenn. Carrie Fisher. Debbie Reynolds. And many, many more.

5. Britain

Okay so we didn't lose it exactly, but the European Union sure did! In a surprise vote in June, Britain voted to leave the EU in the midst of the biggest refugee crisis since World War II. Then Prime Minister David Cameron subsequently stepped down and Theresa May became the second female PM of Britain following Margaret Thatcher. Wow, that's a lot of change.

6. The magic of Disney

When a two-year-old boy got snatched up by an alligator while he and his family were on vacation at a Disney resort in Florida, shock was one of the first reactions we had when we heard the story. It was easily one of the more heartbreaking moments of 2016.

7. All confidence in our physical abilities thanks to the Olympics

The 2016 Olympics made us want to run to the gym and do a thousand pushups. It wasn’t hard to be inspired by Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, and the fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt.

8. Faith in humanity courtesy the 2016 election

This election was literally the worst. Candidates attacked journalists and pretended they didn’t know understand the term "wiping the server." Some were called deplorables and others answered the call of “nasty woman.” Mostly we just tried to enjoy the SNL material. WikiLeaks documents were dredged up over and over again. Even after the election, pizzagate was actually a thing. Do yourself a solid and check out how crazy some people actually are. Immediate confidence booster. We are actually wondering if the madness was worth all the memes.

9. Common sense

We were totally cringing when we heard Harambe the gorilla had received 15,000 votes. I mean seriously? If it makes you feel any better, this totally isn't true and was fact checked by Politifact. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t make us lose faith in humanity for a while.

10. Trust in the media

With fake news spreading across the internet and a newfound ability to block whoever you disagree with, many felt the media was so biased and bought off that it wasn’t worth listening to anymore. A Gallup poll reports that only 32 percent say they have a “great deal” or a “fair amount” of trust. The media will have a hard time earning back credibility.

11. Sense of safety

In light of the tragedies all over the world, it made it harder and harder to feel safe every day. From the bombing in Brussels to the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, our hearts have gone out to the lost and their loved ones. The only way to fight this hate is with love for one another.

12. Princess Leia

Although we have had many celebrity deaths this year, Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia from the Star Wars franchise) was in a league all her own. She passed away just days ago. Since the first episode of Star Wars in the 70s, Princess turned General Leia has inspired millions with a strong female presence on screen. And while we will all miss her and that amazing hair, her legacy will no doubt continue.

Oh 2016, we are glad to see you go!

As 2016 is coming to a close, it is important that we reflect on all of the wonderful drink creations that Starbucks came out with this year. Remember the amazing rainbow drinks on the secret menu this summer? Not only did we get addicted to that colorful family, but our Insta theme went from 0 to 100 in just a matter of seconds.

From pretty custom secret menu drinks to new holiday items, it's safe to say that Starbs absolutely did not disappoint this year. Thank you, Starbucks, for continuously stealing our hearts with new beverages.

Pink Drink

Hey #pinkdrink wassup hello

A photo posted by Catherine Lowe (@cathclowe) on

When the gorgeous Pink Drink debuted during the summer, everyone in the world obsessed over this delicious drink. The Insta trend #PinkDrink blew up and everyone seemed to post about this pretty pink goodness. To order this amazingness, you ask for a Strawberry Acai Refresher with coconut milk instead of water. In our opinion, this is the best drink Starbucks has ever created. We promise it won't disappoint.

Purple Drink

This Internet sensation appeared after the release of the Pink Drink and everyone fell in love with the colorful drinks. The Purple Drink consists of passion iced tea, soy milk, vanilla syrup, and scoops of blackberries. These colorful drinks are sure to make your Insta theme pop!

Orange Drink

Orange is the new pink! With another addition to the rainbow, this drink consists of orange mango juice, vanilla bean powder and coconut milk. How pretty is this for summertime?

Summer Granitas

Just like the Pink Drink, Purple Drink, and Orange Drink, the secret menu saw the addition of other summer drinks that were definitely worth an Insta post. The frozen Granita drinks cooled customers off by providing delicious slushy goodness in strawberry lemon-limeade, youth berry white tea and caramel espresso flavors. The drinks were available on the Sunset Menu and were available after 3 p.m. We really hope Starbs brings back these cooling drinks next summer!

Cold Brew Iced Coffee

This has to be one of the most delicious iced coffee drinks, ever. When Starbucks introduced this beverage early this year, everyone went crazy ordering this sweetness. The stores create only a small batch of cold brew each day, so make sure to get there early before it's gone!

Frauppula Frappuccino

Just in time for Halloween, Starbucks brought back this signature festive drink for a limited time. To order this delicious drink, you'll want to get mocha sauce on the bottom of the cup, white chocolate sauce, milk and ice blended together, a drizzle of raspberry syrup on the top, and then finish it off with whip cream.

Tuxedo Collection

The Tuxedo Collection was recently released this past week and we can't get enough off of it. The collection is only available for a limited time in 2016 before New Year's, and it consists of The Tuxedo Mocha, Tuxedo Mocha Frappuccino and Tuxedo Hot Chocolate. Definitely try this fancy new collection before it's gone!

Holiday Red Cups

The Starbucks Red Cups did not disappoint this holiday season. With 13 different designs to choose from, Starbucks created custom cups to help you get in the spirit of the holidays. We hope that they keep the same ones next year!

Holiday Spice Flat White

Only available during the winter, this drink combines smooth ristretto shots of Christmas Blend Espresso Roast with amazing steamed microfoam. This drink is a perfect festive version of a classic espresso drink and you NEED to try it while it's still in stores!

4 Reasons Why Graduating in December Doesn't Actually Suck

Everyone knows that being a December graduate is mega awkward! But sometimes (actually, quite often) those 15-credit semesters just don’t add up perfectly, making winter graduation kind of inevitable. So while being a December graduate may feel a little random and even anticlimactic at times, here’s why jumping out of college mid-year is actually really amazing.

1. Graduation is WAY shorter

Not having to hear the name of every single graduating person at your university is by far THE BEST perk of graduating in the winter. This gives you more time to get dinner with family after, or prep for your first night out with the girls as an ~official~ graduate.

2. You have time to get your life together

No, but really. December is notoriously an awkward time of the year to job hunt. Because of that, there’s far less pressure from family and friends to have all the answers post-graduation. If you end up without that prized big-city job, and need to work locally for awhile, you definitely won’t feel the impending doom that a May graduate would. So save up money while living in your college town, apply to graduate school, or work on those passion projects you never got to finish during college. You have time (or a whole semester to be exact), with no pressure included.

3. The job market isn’t quite as flooded

Completely opposite of the spring, the December job market isn’t suddenly flooded with recent grads — which means less competition! So if you found an interesting job or fellowship that you want, you’re more likely to get it more now than ever. Which way better competing tooth and nail for jobs like most May graduates have to do.

4. You get a one month grace period right after—AKA THE HOLIDAYS

But seriously — what’s better than finishing up your last grueling semester and then going home to stuff your face with free food and carbs? If you do end up finding a job, the holidays will be soon, meaning either a) you’ll have more money just in time for the holidays or b) you’ll get lots of days off! What better way to transition into adult mode?

So whether you’re graduating college a semester early or a little later, you did it! December graduation may not be the pumped up summer convocation you were expecting when you first got to college, but it IS your day to shine! So while munching on mom’s home-cooked food this week, remember how lucky you are to be DONE!

These Brands Are Releasing Foundation Shades to Fit More Skin Tones in 2017

The days of mixing multiple foundation shades to match your skin tone are over! According to Bustle, many of our favorite brands are expanding their product lines throughout 2017 to include a wide range of hues that will allow users to narrow their shade down to one product. By diversifying their foundation lines, the companies are becoming much more inclusive–which is a win in my book!

Some of the expanding lines listed were Dior's Diorskin Forever Foundation ($50), Nyx Cosmetics' Total Control Drop Foundation ($14), Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra 24/7 Long Wear Foundation ($47) and Surratt Beauty's Surreal Real Skin Foundation ($67). Each of these will include several light shades and multiple dark shades, and will hopefully allow for an easier match for everyone.

Other popular brands have formulated additional shades for their lines as well, including Too Faced's Born This Way Foundation ($39), which has recently added six new shades. Maybelline has also been amping up its foundation lines by creating several foundations to accommodate different skin types and shades.

The diverse makeup movement has been evident in more than just a wider variety of available products, but in beauty campaigns as well. CoverGirl has been introducing brand ambassadors that are quite different from anything we've ever seen before. Some of their 2016 advertisements included photos of Nura Afia wearing a hijab and featured James Charles, the first male CoverGirl.

With the makeup world quickly diversifying its products, I'm excited to see the amount of inclusivity 2017 will bring us. At least there was some progress this year.

Messages of support have been pouring in all over social media for Billie Lourd following the passing of her mother Carrie Fisher and grandmother Debbie Reynolds within days of one another. Celebrities like Taylor Lautner and her Scream Queens co-star Lea Michele have all posted sweet tributes to Billie after her devastating loss.

Her stepfather Bruce Bozzi, who is married to the 24-year-old actress's father Bryan Lourd, took to Instagram on Thursday to write Billie a touching message, telling her, "The strength of these women live so vibrantly in you," complete with a photo of all three women at her graduation from New York University two years ago.

@praisethelourd it's an honor to be your Stepfather. This day, your NYU grad day we had so much fun! Yankee Stadium your mom and I laughed our asses off, as she kept one fantastic line coming after the other - no less when we all fell asleep the night before in the smaller ceremony because it was so boring. Every time Carrie looked at me she said " how are you still awake"! Your grandmother with our sweet Ava was the kindest most loving. So...as Carrie said to me years ago " I'm a good stepmother" I promise I will always be & the strength of these women live so vibrantly in you. I've been lucky enough to see this for a decade! Many decades to come.....heaven just got a shit load more fun!!!! I love you @praisethelourd xo Bru Thursday 12/29/16

According to ABC News, the date for the funeral has yet to be decided, but Lourd's uncle has confirmed that the funerals for Fisher and Reynolds will be held together. While we can't imagine the heartbreak and pain Billie is experiencing right now, it's reassuring to know she has the support of family and friends while she's grieving.

An Arkansas Teacher Has Resigned After Racist Facebook Posts About the Obamas

A high school teacher has resigned after his racist Facebook comments about the Obamas were discovered by the Malvern School District in Little Rock, Arkansas, his now-former employer.

USA Today reports that Trent Bennett allegedly posted the comments to a local news station's page, writing things like, "Michelle Obummer... America's first chimp," saying he was "glad to see that nasty chimp and her spider monkey hubby gone for good." He also made claims that President Obama was born in Kenya. (Because we haven't heard that one enough already - not.)

According to KATV, a local Little Rock television station, the Malvern School Board met Thursday night and quickly accepted Bennett's resignation. In his statement to the station, Bennett said, "I would like to issue an apology for the outrage and hurt feelings caused by these comments. I acknowledge that they were disrespectful and offensive. I am aware of the impact this has had, and though I negate that I have ever conducted myself in a less than professional manner in regard to my students, I have resigned my teaching position at Malvern High School."

Unfortunately, this isn't the only incident of its kind this year either - a West Virginia official was lost her job back in November after making similar comments about Michelle Obama, referring to her as "an ape in heels." Seriously people, can we please leave the racist and offensive comments about America's first family in 2016 please?

The First-Ever Intersex U.S. Birth Certificate Was Just Issued

The state of New York just made a major step in the right direction for intersex people by issuing the first known non-binary birth certificate to 55-year-old Sara Kelly Keenan on Wednesday.

Born intersex with male genes, female genetalia and mixed reproductive organs, it took 55 years for Keenan's birth certificate to finally reflect her gender. According to Elle, Keenan (who prefers female pronouns) was first labeled as male on her initial birth certificate, but was issued a female birth certificate three weeks after being born. Her new birth certificate simply reads "intersex," and is the first known birth certificate in the United States that allows for a third gender to be used.

Keenan has been working since 2012 to make third sex birth certificates available, and her birth certificate represents a major milestone for rights of intersex people and those who identify as non-binary.

"Not all intersex people will choose to identify legally as intersex,” she told NBC. “And not all parents will choose to have their intersex child identified as intersex on birth documents. But for those who do, the option must exist.”

Keenan celebrated the historic change by posting a photo of herself in a shirt that reads "Intersexxy and perfect," while holding up an "I 'heart' NY" sign, and it's basically impossible not to smile while looking at it. Despite an end to 2016 that has been marked by fear regarding the future of gender rights, we're hoping progress like this will continue to be made into 2017.

After an insanely adorable Christmas together, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have continued spreading holiday cheer by spending an afternoon visiting patients at the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, California.

The visit was part of a collaboration with the Happy Hippie Foundation, an organization started by Miley that aims to fight injustices facing vulnerable populations such as homeless youth and LGBTQ youth. The couple posed for selfies and chatted with patients, and Miley even dressed the colorful, Happy Hippie part in a floral green dress and furry pink jacket. If the adorable Instagrams Miley posted to her account are any indication, it was an amazing experience for both the couple and the patients.

Miley captioned one of her 'grams, "Thank you @radychildrens for your incredible dedication to bettering the lives and health of the beautiful youngins @liamhemsworth and I got to visit today!" According to the hospital's Facebook post, the feeling was mutual. "Today we received a surprise special visit from a couple of people you might recognize! Thank you to Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth and The Happy Hippie Foundation for bringing joy and laughter to our patients!"

Couples spending time contributing to a good cause and giving back together - does it get any cuter than that?
