10 Ways to Avoid Sorority Drama

$

Being in a sorority has so many benefits.  It is hard to even know where to begin!  As a member of a chapter, you have gained a very unique support system.  But what happens when you begin to feel a crack in the foundation of this system? When we’re entrenched in the chaos of sorority life, we sometimes find ourselves confronted with conflict.  Her Campus has compiled 10 ways to fend off the drama, and move on to a better sisterhood!

1. Don’t be Passive-Aggressive

girl on laptop

You live in the chapter house and your roommate always comes in late and makes a ton of noise.  What do you do?  Certainly not talk to her about it.  No, you decide that making even more noise is the best way to go.  Right?  Wrong.  Sisters, let’s put an end to the cringe-inducing drama starter that is passive-aggressive behavior.  These kinds of actions may give you a smirk of satisfaction in the moment, but they won’t solve your problem in the long run.“My sorority has a page on Facebook and there are CONSTANTLY girls posting messages to ‘everyone’ when in reality, they're subtly calling a certain person out,” says a collegiette who wishes to remain anonymous. “If you have something important to say or talk with a sister, do it in private and don't put it on Facebook for your entire chapter to see. You may think you're dodging a confrontational bullet by being passive-aggressive, but it only makes things worse.”

2. Put it into Perspective

Drama is like a celebrity.  In the heat of the moment, it gets all the attention.  It is the “it” thing to talk about.  And yet, in a flash it can become old news.  If you find yourself in a spat with a sister that seems especially upsetting, remember this: even if it feels like everyone is talking about or thinking about the drama between you and another person, you probably just need to give it a little time to simmer down.  While you wait, make a conscious effort to be courteous to the people around you.  You can’t change the fact that you’re being talked about, but you do have control over the one-on-one interactions you have with your sisters.

3. Promote Sisterly Bonding

Noticing a lot of tension during chapter?  This doesn’t necessarily mean your sisters aren’t getting along. Perhaps midterms are just around the corner.  There’s an illness going around. Whatever it is, it isn’t anything a good old sisterhood event can’t fix.  If you see someone feeling especially hostile or gloomy, combat it by asking her to hang out.  Going to a movie is a great way to cure this kind of issue.  It will give you and your sisters a chance to sit back and spend an hour or two not worrying about stresses in your lives. Plus, this shared experience will give you positive stuff to discuss instead of the negativity that was making things tense in the first place.

4. Get Out of Greek Town

sororities sisterhood

When you’re a member of a sorority, it can be incredibly easy to get caught up in everything Greek.  This is not always a bad thing.  It’s great to be involved with your organization!  However, it also means that you are around the same people all the time, which means conflict may be brewing.  This isn’t because you aren’t great friends; it’s probably just because you need a change of scenery on occasion. “I live in my sorority house so there can be a lot of estrogen flow sometimes!  I just try and make sure I spend a lot of time out of the house during the day, whether that's at work or in the library or in class,” says Alexa, a junior from James Madison University. “I think it is important to have friends outside of your sorority too, even if they are in another one!”

5. Going Out? Keep Your Lips Sealed

A sorority girl is committing a serious error if she badmouths girls in her chapter (or another chapter) when she is out and about.  It makes your sisterhood look damaged or nonexistent. If word gets out that you were caught doing this, it could have some seriously negative effects when it comes to recruitment next year.  Who would want to be in a sorority that talks trash on each other in a public setting?  Probably not you, and definitely not an incoming freshman who just wants to make friends and find a family away from home.  If you need another reason why this is a bad idea, this also makes you look bad in front of guys.  Say you go out to a fraternity, perhaps looking to get asked out on a date.  If a guy hears you spewing drama, he will run the other way, and fast!

6. Leave Liquor Out of It

Sometimes called “liquid courage,” alcohol has the dangerous property of forcing drama out of people in a negative way.  The important thing here is to know your limits and to address issues before you start drinking. If have an issue with one of your sisters, talk to her about the problem WAY beforehand.  Don’t assume that you will just worry about it the next day, and definitely don’t plan on talking to her about it that night.  If you find yourself drinking with the group, you may also find yourself getting into it with your sister.  With alcohol involved, your attempt at conflict resolution might not even make sense.  You will also have less control over your words and they could come out ten times harsher than you really mean. The worst part of it all?  You just wasted a fun night with your sisters on drama that could’ve been fixed already.

7. Vent to a Third Party

Venting about a problem is normal, but you have to be conscious of your setting and what you are saying.  The chapter house is not the place to vent about another sister.  It turns people associated with her against her, and that’s not fair.  “Whenever I find myself having issues with someone in my house, I call my friend from high school that goes to a different college now,” says Emma, a senior from the University of Missouri, “I’m able to get all of my frustration off of my chest without hurting anyone.”  A non-affiliated third party will be able to give you objective advice about the issue at hand, and she won’t spread it around like gossip to other people.

sorority greek life

8. Start a Convo, Don’t Make a Scene

Just because you’re about to confront someone with a problem doesn’t mean that you have an excuse to attack her.  Starting a huge catfight in the middle of your chapter formal room is definitely out of bounds… that’s just extreme.  But you also shouldn’t have a serious conversation (that could potentially escalate) in any sort of public setting where other sisters could see/join in.  Drop her a text asking to talk over a cup of coffee.  Figuring out a fix to the drama in an isolated place will keep it from getting worse.  When you’re actually talking it out, make sure you’re listening to her side of everything too (even if you don’t necessarily agree with what she’s saying).  Being as diplomatic as possible will increase your chances of fixing your relationship in the future.

9. Kill Them With Kindness

Sometimes, the problem won’t be fixed even after you two sit down for a mature conversaion.  You have on your hands a case of “time heals everything.”  Until then, you’ll still have to see her at every philanthropy event, social, or weekly chapter meeting.  “Whenever I’m in the midst of drama, I remember some advice my mom routinely gives me,” says Rebecca, a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. “Unless you have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.  And if you’re confronted with a bully of some sort, kill them with kindness.”  Catch her throwing a glare in your general direction?  Send a polite smile back and focus on how awesome the rest of your day is going to be.

10. Remember Your Letters

If you ever get to a point where you feel like your sorority is a beehive of drama and chaos, take a minute.  Go for a walk or throw some headphones on and let yourself think.  Everyone has ups and downs, and this may just be one of those down times for your sorority as a whole.  But don’t forget why you all joined in the first place.  You were each hand selected because you have similar values, goals, and even senses of humor.  At one point, you were all united in your love for the letters you wear regularly.  From the minute you were initiated you became sisters and part of that is having each other’s back.  Yes, some drama is going to come your way, but use it to make your sisterhood stronger.  Everyone is going to have some conflict, but help your chapter become the best at growing from it and moving on.  It starts with you, collegiette!

What's In My Makeup Bag?

The collegiettes that contribute to The Beauty School blog for Her Campus are all about hair, makeup and beauty. Since it’s always exciting to get the inside scoop about their favorite products, styles and routines, sneaking a peek inside of their makeup bags can reveal firsthand what products they use to look fabulous and beautiful. All products shown are personal favorites selected by the specific girl of the week, and all opinions expressed are 100% their own.

Like many of the other Beauty School Bloggers, I have bit of an obsession with makeup. To be honest, I don't really have a makeup 'bag' because it wouldn't all fit in a bag. My collection is more like a giant set of drawers:

So, I narrowed it down and picked out some of my favorite and most used products to show you!

Face

After I moisturize, I use my Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion as a base for my foundation. My favorite foundation of all time is Covergirl's Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1. I swear this is the best foundation I have ever used. It's not too heavy, it gives great coverage and it lasts all day! Plus, it's pretty inexpensive, as it is a drugstore brand. What else could you ask for? If I have any redness or imperfections, I use bareMinerals concealer to cover it up. I also use it under my eyes, so I look like I actually had a good night's sleep (which is rare).

I then set my foundation and concealer with Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. This powder is affordable, at around $5.00, and works so well! It keeps my face from getting oily all day. Then, you can't forget the blush and bronzer! I use Rimmel Bronzer in Sun Bronze in the hollows of my cheeks, on my temples and around my jawline. This bronzer gives a natural glow to the skin. I then apply my favorite blush at the moment, e.l.f Baked Blush in Peachy Cheeky to my cheekbones. To give a little extra glow to my skin, I add a Benefit highlighter in Watt's Up! to the top of my cheekbones!

Eyes

The amount of eye shadow that I own is actually insane and I probably have every color of the rainbow, but recently I have just been using my Naked 3 palette by Urban Decay.

Like the other 2 Naked palettes, it has 12 neutral shades that can be worn every day, but can also be built up for a more dramatic look. The Naked 3 has more rosy colors, which I'm loving as we approach spring! I usually wear some combination of the colors in this palette and it's great for a natural daytime look.

After eye shadow, eyeliner is a must. I wear winged liner on my upper lash line basically everyday. To do this, I use Palladio's liquid liner. This eyeliner has a felt tip that makes it easy to apply. I don't always use eyeliner on my lower lash line, but if I do want to go for a more dramatic look, I use Urban Decay's 24/7 glide-on pencil. It's my favorite because it seriously lasts all day and doesn't smudge like some eyeliners tend to do. Then, of course, you can't forget mascara. I have been loving Maybelline's The Falsies Big Eyes mascara. It has 2 sides, one for the upper lashes and one for the bottom. Both sides make your lashes look amazing! It's also waterproof, so it stays on really well.

Lips

While I love all makeup, lipstick definitely has to be my favorite. I own over 50 lipsticks, which is probably insane, but I don't even care. I love wearing bold lips on an every day basis, so picking 3 of my favorites was difficult. However, I really love these three and find myself wearing them often.

The first is Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in Kiss of Life, which I have found to be the perfect matte red lipstick. The next is MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Girl About Town. It is an amazing pink that is perfect for spring. The last is Covergirl Lip Perfection in Smitten. Their lipstick line is one of my favorites from the drugstore. I have several shades from it, but Smitten is a wearable purple lipstick, which I love wearing all the time.

Those are just a few of my favorite things in my makeup bag! I hope you enjoyed getting a look at my everyday routine and favorite products.

Be sure to check out the other blogger's posts to see what's in their makeup bag!

Study Finds Link Between Eating Disorders and Facebook

A new study out of Florida State University has found a link between eating disorders and frequent use of Facebook. The study was peformed by psychology professor Pamela K. Keel, and she studied 960 college women to complete the research.

According to a press release from the university, "Women who placed greater importance on receiving comments and 'likes' on their status updates and were more likely to untag photos of themselves and compare their own photos to friends’ posted photos reported the highest levels of disordered eating."

Keel states that although Facebook is wonderful for staying connected, it also subjects women to more thin body image ideals that may increase their risk for eating disorders. Keel, with her co-authors Annalise G. Mabe and K. Jean Forney, published her work in an article titled "Do You 'Like' My Photo? Facebook Use Maintains Eating Disorder Risk," which can be found in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

"Now it’s not the case that the only place you’re seeing thin and idealized images of women in bathing suits is on magazine covers," Keel says. "Now your friends are posting carefully curated photos of themselves on their Facebook page that you’re being exposed to constantly. It represents a very unique merging of two things that we already knew could increase risk for eating disorders."

Keel goes on to say, “Consider what it is you are pursuing when you post on Facebook. Try to remember that you are a whole person and not an object, so don’t display yourself as a commodity that then can be approved or not approved.”

The 9 Best Mary-Kate & Ashley Movies

$

Ever since their days as Michelle Tanner on Full House, we’ve been obsessed with the Olsen twins. Even though they stepped away from the camera a few years ago to work on their super-successful fashion lines, the glory days of Mary-Kate and Ashley movies are still in our highly nostalgic minds. They may never make another movie (tear), but there are plenty of Olsen-twin films in the archives for us to watch over and over again. Here are our favorites!

1. Winning London

Did anyone else immediately want to join Model UN after watching Chloe and Riley go to London to participate, learn about world politics and kiss really cute boys? Swoon. Side note: we also wanted to legally change our names to Chloe or Riley, which we thought were the coolest names ever.

2. Passport to Paris

Keeping with an international theme, this 1999 movie taught us all about Parisian glamour… and escargot. Though we were kind of grossed out to learn that people ate snails, the views of Paris and the adorable French boys made us want to fly over the Atlantic immediately.

3. Switching Goals

Ahh, yes. Tomboy Mary-Kate and Ashley really “scored” with this one (sorry). Thanks to this movie, we knew never to order pizza on a date for fear of cheese hanging from our chin, and we also looked everywhere for tinted sunglasses (we’re still in the market, if you have any). We're still rooting for the Buzzards.

4. Our Lips Are Sealed

In the Witness Protection Program for witnessing a crime (which would never have resulted in placement in the Witness Protection Program, but we digress), Maddie and Abby get to move to Australia, party on a boat in go-go boots, sport super-cool chunky highlights and (again!) kiss a few Aussies. Livin’ the dream, ladies.

5. New York Minute

This 2004 movie is the most recent in the Olsen franchise, and although the plot is slightly disappointing, the fashion is not. Bonus: a young Jared Padalecki stars as Trey, the movie’s token hottie. Bob Saget also makes a cameo appearance.

6. Billboard Dad

When Tess and Emily decide it’s time for their dad to start dating, they paste his picture up on a billboard. Though the twins have good intentions, things (of course) go awry. Important life lessons learned from this 1998 classic include what a whisk is and that some women really do prefer to go by “Ms.”

7. It Takes Two

Any real MK & A aficionado has seen this vintage (aka 1995) adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper. If you haven’t seen it, we highly recommend it to round out your Olsen film experience.

8. Holiday in the Sun

It’s super cheesy, but Holiday in the Sun is a must-see if you want to see all the Olsen twins’ films. Not to be confused with The Challenge, which also takes place in a tropical setting, Holiday in the Sun follows Madison and Alex as they solve crime and save the world from a man smuggling stolen goods.

9. When in Rome

So many international settings, so little time (which actually is the title of a TV show the Olsen twins did in 2001)! This adventure takes Leila and Charli to a disastrous internship in Rome that is saved by, you guessed it, cute boys! Though the plot isn’t that great, we still love you, Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Their movies are perfect for a girls’ night in or a 2000s throwback party. Let the world know that we love you, Olsen twins. Your movies are classics in our minds.

9 Date-Night Movies He’ll Actually Watch

$

0

It’s date night, and it’s your turn to choose the movie. The pressure is on to choose one that your boyfriend will like too, so we’re here to help! Going behind enemy lines, we asked some college boys which movies they actually don’t mind watching on date night, and some of the titles might surprise you! Make sure to reference this list next time you’re looking for the perfect date-night movie for you and your cutie.

1. Hitch (2005)

A man (Will Smith) who has a flair for flirting with girls (and is a professional “date doctor,” as he likes to call it) helps his less-fortunate client with his flirting techniques so he can get a date. However, in the movie, the “date doctor” cannot seem to get a date with his dream woman, no matter how hard he tries.

The film is cute and romantic, which makes it perfect for cuddles, but it’s hilarious enough to make you laugh with your guy all night!

Why he’ll like it

Will Smith is a man of many talents, and his humor in this movie is fresh and witty. Your guy will like that this movie is funny without being overly romantic and cheesy. Plus, he might pick up some tips for how to romance you!

2. Date Night (2010)

A middle-aged couple (Tina Fey and Steve Carell) decides to spice up their dating life by going on a date, fancy dress and all. What they don’t know is that they’ll be dragged into a crazy night of escaping thieves instead of the calm dinner they expected.

If you’re looking for more of an action movie for your date night, look no further. This movie was made for date night (just look at the title)! It’s funny so you both can enjoy it without him getting bored with clichéd love scenes. Plus, Fey and Carell are both hilarious!

Why he’ll like it

The film is about a date gone wrong, and more than once there are crazy chase scenes and humorous panic from both Fey and Carell. He’ll enjoy that it isn’t full of cheesy, romantic clichés.

3. Say Anything… (1989)

When a guy’s determined to get the prettiest girl at school (Ione Skye), he’ll stop at nothing to do so, especially when he ends up falling in love. Lloyd (John Cusack) wins the affection of a girl and loses it due to her overbearing father, but he refuses to give up, going so far as to create the iconic boom box scene. It’s a movie that gets cuter with every passing minute. It’s great for cuddles on the couch and reminiscing about how your own romance started.

Why he’ll like it

Boys like stories where the boy gets the girl. They also enjoy laughing at terrible ‘80s fashion. So while you get all teary-eyed over how cute Cusack is with the boom box, he can make comments about the ridiculous trench coat Cusack’s wearing.

4. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Benjamin (Matthew McConaughey) is assigned to have a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. Andie (Kate Hudson) is assigned to lose a guy in 10 days. And right after they get these assignments, Benjamin and Andie run into each other, both determined to make their deadlines. Too bad their feelings get in the way…

This film has a simple-to-follow plot, hilarious antics and an aesthetically pleasing cast. It’s definitely one to enjoy on your night in.

Why he’ll like it

Hudson and McConaughey are complete jokesters. Your guy will be laughing until his stomach hurts from the great story these two create.

5. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)

Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) are two friends going in different directions. But in the midst of their lives, they always find time to get back to each other. While they claim that a guy and a girl can be just friends, this movie proves otherwise.

This movie is funny and cute, and it’ll have you getting into the storyline in no time. Crystal and Ryan play such opposites that it’s impossible not to laugh during the film!

Why he’ll like it

Between the scene where Sally fakes an orgasm in a very populated restaurant and the general banter between the two leads, your boy will laugh and have a good time while you coo over the romance.

6. (500) Days of Summer (2009)

Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls in love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel). And while he saw their relationship as perfect (cute and quirky couple moments included), when it all comes crashing down unexpectedly, Tom must reevaluate the 500 days that Summer took up in his life.

This movie is more than some sappy romance you’ve dragged him to see; it’s a tale of a realistic relationship. And Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel get up to some pretty odd shenanigans, which means the two of you will definitely enjoy this movie.

Why he’ll like it

The film has enough sobering moments for him to not see it as a chick flick, which means that it’ll fit his idea of a date-night movie. “I’ve watched this movie about 10 times with my girlfriend and we now both have a copy,” says Ben, a student at the University of Oregon. Your guy will empathize with Tom as he goes through loving and losing a girl, and he’ll probably get some snuggles as the on-screen relationship progresses.

7. Love Actually (2003)

Follow the tale of several people as they experience love. Whether it’s through a man who has just lost his wife, a son who falls in love with his classmate, a man who falls for his best friend’s wife or a Prime Minister who spends a lot of time thinking about his secretary, this movie shows how love is all around us.

Prepare for “aww” moments, because this holiday movie is the absolute cutest. If you enjoy adorable couples, sweet storylines and dry humor, you’ve found the perfect movie for your date night.

Why he’ll like it

This movie is more than just sappy romance, even though that’s what it promotes. It has classic one-liners, an incredibly talented cast, some drama that adds to the overall plot and Rowan Atkinson playing the best store clerk in history, so it’s definitely worth a watch. Your guy will love that this movie has a mix of romance, comedy and quirkiness.

8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

When Scott (Michael Cera) meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), he’s blown away by how fascinated he is with her. But to be able to date her, he must defeat all of her evil exes. And thus begins Scott going on possibly the most challenging date of all time.

This movie is comical, and Cera is a compete goof on screen. The characters are all eccentric and quirky, making for laughs and sprinkles of romance just to remind you two that it’s date night.

Why he’ll like it

The movie is based off the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim, and what boy doesn’t like comics? “I feel like it’s more of a boy movie, but she can enjoy it too, so we can both watch it,” says Eli, a student at the University of Oregon. This movie has lots of action and insanity that will keep him entertained the entire time. Plus, the film is made to look like a comic book too, so he’ll definitely be into that!

9. The Princess Bride (1987)

When your true love is lost at sea and you are betrothed to a man you despise, what happens when you’re kidnapped by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who ends up being your true love? In this movie, a young, sick boy’s grandfather reads him an epic romance story, and this movie takes you along for the ride.

This movie is a classic. It has romance, chivalry, sword fighting, humor, hidden identities and just about anything you could want to watch. It’s perfect for any night, especially one where you want to watch a great movie with your guy.

Why he’ll like it

Like we said, this movie has everything, and he’ll get caught up in the sword fighting, revenge, giants, pirates and humor. And the priest has a hilarious voice, so you know he is going to watch it for that!

When we asked the guys which movies they liked, they all agreed on one thing: if you’re going to watch a movie, it needs to be easy to follow. “If I have to pay attention to the plot, I can’t pay attention to my girl,” says Alex, a student at the University of Oregon. See, collegiettes—he just wants to spend time with you!

Happy date night!

Career: 8 Tips for Emailing Your Way to a Job

$
0
0

Making sure your job or internship application is flawless can be super stressful, especially when you’re submitting it via email. With so many emails and applicants for employers to review, the slightest mistake can ruin your chances of landing the job. But don’t panic—Her Campus collected some awesome tips from the experts to help you go from inbox to interview!

1. Use a short and simple subject line

Unless the job posting specifies otherwise, get straight to the point in your subject line. Heather R. Huhman, an experienced hiring manager and founder and president of Come Recommended, a content marketing and digital PR consultancy company, suggests including the title of the position you are applying for, followed by your first and last name. Although you want to stand out from the crowd, you don’t want to clutter a potential employer’s inbox with borderline obnoxious subject lines (save the creativity for your cover letter!). With a simple and standard subject line, employers will know who you are and what you want without any excess information.

2. Optimize your signature

Your signature is a chance to impress the hiring manger, and a good signature will make it easy for him or her to find more information about you.

If you’re a recent graduate, you don’t want to include titles of internship positions you held in college. Instead, Huhman says to include your full name, email address, phone number and relevant social media links that show what you can offer to the employer. For example, Huhman recommends including your personal website or professional page, such as your LinkedIn profile.

If you’re a current student, Carol Spector, the director of Career Services at Emerson College, advises including your degree and graduation date along with your name. Take advantage of helpful tools such as WiseStamp, where you can create a signature that will work best for you.

3. Greet the hiring manager properly

When beginning your email, be sure to address the hiring manager by his or her last name. For example, “Dear Mr. Smith” is more professional and formal than “Dear John.” If the information is not included in the job posting, Huhman says “you should try very hard to find this information elsewhere.” Don’t be too lazy to conduct a Google search! If you absolutely cannot find his or her name, Huhman says “Dear Hiring Manager” is preferred over “To Whom It May Concern.”

4. Attach your files as PDFs

If you’re including your resume and cover letter as an attachment, “you should always send it as a PDF,” Huhman says. “It keeps the formatting of your document regardless [of] what type of device the hiring manager is using.”

Spector also agrees that PDFs are preferred over Word documents, which may cause technical errors. You don’t want question marks to pop up throughout your resume because the hiring manager is using a different version of Word!

As with your subject line, be as straightforward as possible with your file names. For example, “MelissaJonesResume.pdf” allows the employer to organize his or her files. “This also makes it easier for hiring managers to print [them] out and share [them] with colleagues,” Huhman says.

5. Have the perfect body

Summer isn’t the only time you want to show off your bod! Keep the body of your email short and sweet. Spector says a sentence or two is just enough. Be sure to reiterate the position you’re interested in and why, which documents you’ve attached and your contact information. You should also mention that you look forward to hearing from the employer, Huhman says. You should express your interest with a short introduction and let your cover letter and resume do the rest of the “talking.”

For example, if you’re a photographer applying for an assistant photographer position at Cosmopolitan magazine, the body of your email should look similar to this:

“Dear Mr. Smith,

My name is Susan Freedman, and I am writing to express my interest in the assistant photographer position listed on Ed2010. I have been reading Cosmopolitan since I was a teenager and I would love the opportunity to work for the magazine.

I have attached a copy of my cover letter and resume, which demonstrate my creativity and organization, as well as my ability to handle the pressure of deadlines.

I look forward to hearing from you to discuss in more detail how my background can contribute to the Cosmopolitan team. I can be reached at (732) 555-1234 or myemailaddress@gmail.com.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Susan Freedman”

6. Proofread for errors

If you’ve read over your email a million times and it seems perfect, check it again! You don’t want to click send and realize afterwards that your computer autocorrected “its” to “it’s.” If you want to make sure your email, cover letter and resume are perfect, try printing out a hard copy of each and reading them out loud. This will help you catch errors you might have missed when reading them. If you can, be sure to ask a career counselor at your school to proofread your email and documents as well. A new set of eyes is often extremely helpful!

7. Correct your mistakes

It can be devastating to find a major error in your email after it has been sent (which is why you should proofread, as advised above!). But we are only human, and if you happened to misspell the company name or you included the wrong position title, your best shot is to resend the application.

“If it’s a minor error, such as a misplaced comma or misspelled word, then it’s probably not worth it to resend your resume or cover letter,” Huhman says. “However, if it’s a glaring mistake or a major typo, then it’s a good idea to resend your application.”

With the second email, briefly tell the hiring manager that you’ve updated your information.

8. Be aware of work hours

In college, it’s totally normal to stay up all night cramming for an exam or sending a research paper to your professor at 3 a.m. However, when emailing a job or internship application, it’s best to send it during work hours. Most professionals are out of reach after business hours or on the weekends, so you should try to send your applications between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday—but earlier in the week, if you can! “I always think that emails received at the end of a week—Friday afternoon—somehow get lost in my inbox,” Spector says.

As graduation day approaches, the time to start the dreaded job search is getting closer and closer. By remembering to be concise, keep a formal tone and remove any “fluff” in your emails, employers and hiring managers are sure to notice you—in a good way!

Celeste Buckingham's "I'm Not Sorry" Is the Anthem for International Women's Day

Run Run Run singer Celeste Buckingham — college student and women's advocate — is back with a new single, “I’m Not Sorry.” The powerful song is the anthem for Care.com’s International Women’s Day. We spoke with Celeste about her new video and her involvement in International Women's Day.

Congratulations on your new video! For those who haven’t seen it yet, what is the main message of the video?

Thank you! The video represents the unfair and unjustified treatment of women in many parts of the world. Even with a tough subject matter, we still want to stay positive and encourage women to stand up for themselves and be proud of who they are!

Who were the people in the video with you?

These are women from various countries around the world! Each one is a fascinating person with an equally fascinating story. One woman is Julie Pazderka, a 24-year-old model and student in Prague. She is also the founder of the Brave Hope FB Forum, and has been battling cervical cancer, chemotherapy, and surgeries. There was also a 9-year-old girl in the video who is a 15-time Karate World Champion from the Slovak Republic! We were lucky to have so many women who have faced such hardships, yet have achieved so much! It was so inspiring!

Did you make it specifically for International Women’s Day?

Yes, we planned this video especially for this event. The song was written earlier and on my recent album, "Where I Belong".

How did you get involved with International Women’s Day and Care.com?

The employees at Care.org found out I was very interested in the empowerment of women and girls. They reached out to me! I, of course, was delighted to get involved!

How do you want people to feel from hearing your song “I’m Not Sorry?”

I want them to feel the heaviness of the issue, but also feel inspired to rise and be a part of change! It doesn't matter if you do something big or small. What matters most is uniting to stand up and do the right thing!

How can fans celebrate International Women’s Day with you?

I want fans to be happy and try to make someone else happy! If they could find one other girl or woman, and make them happy for the day, that would be amazing. It’s all about working together!

On an unrelated note, many collegiettes like you are aspiring singers. Is it difficult to balance your college career with your music career?

It is difficult, but not impossible. There are a lot of alternatives for studying, so you can find what is suitable for you and your schedule. It may take longer, but that's okay. I think that the combination of study and work is actually a good one. You can gain the knowledge and learn to use it in a realistic, and sometimes challenging way. It's not easy and I'm often very tired, but it's totally worth it!

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My mom. She's a fighter and a hard working woman. She's got a huge heart, but doesn't give in easily. She's battled her way through life and has been committed to making her kids happy, healthy, and capable. She amazes me everyday!

Any message you want to share with your fans about this day?

I just want to remind my fans that you may feel like you can't do anything to help, but we can all do something, even if it feels so small. Be sure to share your joy, freedom, and happiness!

You can join in the movement with Celeste by writing "I'm Not Sorry" on your arm and sharing a picture on Instagram. You can also post on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #ImNotSorry.

10 Things To Do Right Now To Score Your Dream Summer Internship

$

The marketing world is a place driven by the bottom line. “It’s all a numbers game!” marketing types like to say, sweat beading on their brows, “Just hit up enough people, and eventually, you’ll make a sale!” I’m telling you now that this is not entirely true. And that’s a good thing!

Think of yourself as a commodity and the world of summer internships as the market within which you must be sold. In ways, it is a numbers game; the more places you apply, the greater your odds of securing a “buyer.” But the game isn’t just about volume, it’s about skill and it’s about strategy.

Collegiettes, shoot for Park Place and begin marketing yourself now to secure your dream summer internship. Don’t roll the dice and cross your fingers for lucky number seven. Follow this game plan and leave chance to Monopoly.

1. Meet with the internship coordinator at your school

Your school employs internship coordinators specifically to ensure you internships, so take advantage of them! If someone offers you Free Parking, you move your piece to Free Parking, right? An internship coordinator is around for the sole purpose of providing you access to valuable internship opportunities worth something far beyond the realm of board game riches.

Call the career services office at your school and set up an appointment with your internship coordinator. Remember, however, that these coordinators, while certainly vested in your internship interests, are also providing help to a lot of students. Come prepared for your meeting with a set of questions so you don’t flounder when the focus is on you.

2. Enlist some help from the fam

Who better to speak in your favor than the two people in the world who love you more than Kanye West loves Kanye West? If your mom and dad are anything like my mom and dad, they would start an (insert your name here) fan club if you didn’t put a stop to it. It’s a fact that parents are naturally biased in favor of their own kids, but why not swing this truth to your advantage?

Even if your parents don’t work in the field you want to pursue, they probably have some amazing untapped connections lying within their friend group. Who knows? Maybe your dad’s poker buddy, Rob, is a financial analyst at an impressive consulting firm. Maybe your mom’s book club friend, Beth, is an arts editor at a cool independent magazine.

The exact occupation of your second cousin, Mark, is probably not something you’ve taken special note of since he left Harvard a few years ago but if you’re too modest to ask, you may miss out on an internship at the social media empire (or something like that) he’s created since your family’s last reunion.

3. Network with alumni

Networking among alumni gives you the home-field advantage, and while I don’t know much about sport metaphors, I do know that a player is better positioned for a win on their own pitch, diamond or ball court. Seek out notable alumni from your college succeeding in a field of your interest through your school’s career office or alumni association and get in touch with them. Make a pointed note of your scholarly connection and wait for the team spirit to kick in.

Ashlee, a recent grad of Hollins University, says, “When I got back from my recent internship I started contacting New York area alumni for help. I know I want to do another internship in New York over the summer and who better to contact than alumni in that area?”

Simmone, a junior at Tufts University, agrees: “I look into the companies where alumni work to see if they have internship programs. Alumni at the company can help to secure me a position and often wantto. I find that personal connections are the best route to take.”

Remember to make a personal connection and not just assume that because you paint your face the same colors and scream for the same team, you’re entitled to a piece of somebody’s post-grad success.

4. Create a LinkedIn page
linked in

Google your name. Open up a new tab and do it right now. What comes up? When I Google my name, for example, one of the top results is a local paper’s review of the high school musical I starred in freshman year. It’s interesting, but it doesn’t give a comprehensive sense of who I am as an internship candidate.

Before hiring, potential employers are going to search your name to corroborate the claims on your résumé, (and make sure you aren’t covering up a brief cameo in College Girls Gone Wild Cancun from spring break ’12). They want to know you can sing and dance in the workplace, to be sure, but even your riveting onstage performance as Teen Girl #3 in Bye Bye Birdie five years ago isn’t going to prove it to them. So give the crowd what they want.

Your professional experience is not likely to show up on Google unless you put it there and LinkedIn makes it totally painless. Not having a LinkedIn profile in the career world is like not having Facebook in the social world. Not sure where to start? Check out “The Do’s and Don’ts of LinkedIn Etiquette” (and use that new tab you opened to copy this URL: www.linkedin.com).

5.  Perfect your resume and cover letter

Creating a perfect resume is a delicate and precise art; this is not the place to channel your inner Pollock. Avoid these dastardly resume don’ts, and take to the process of resume-writing as you would a course paper worth 100 percent of your final grade.

Arthur D. Rosenberg, author of The Resume Handbook, advises, “Think of your resume as a special tool with one specific purpose: winning an interview... [It] is a wedge designed to get your foot inside the doors of companies where you might like to work.”

Whether you’re putting together your first, second or hundredth resume it can be easy to get lost in formatting and forget to put the same emphasis on writing the all-important cover letter. The harsh reality is that your resume and cover letter are in competition with hundreds, maybe thousands of others, and to ensure they’re the best make them a dynamic duo to rival Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, themselves.

6. Don’t be afraid to go abroad!

Many collegiettes’ first instincts when scoping out summer internships are to apply for openings that lay close to home, but limiting yourself to a certain mile radius from your locality will also seriously limit your opportunities!

Alexa, a collegiette at James Madison University, can attest to this difficulty: “It is hard because I want something close to home and though I am relatively close to NYC where all the ‘good’ ones are, it's way more expensive to intern there!”

While the prospect may at first seem daunting, consider the possibility of moving your search overseas! Some internships provide stipends for accommodation and the value of experiencing life and work in a foreign country will more than outweigh the cost of missing out on a couple family barbecues-(admit it, your dad always over-sauces the burgers, anyway).

Of course, making the leap (and the lengthy flight), to work abroad will require some seriously detailed additional planning, but if you’re willing to put in the effort, the outcome can only be exotic, educational, and like, everything-you-could-ever-want: an amazing internship in an amazing locale.

7. Prepare for your interview

job interview

So you’ve made it through the rounds of applications and landed an interview. Well done! But now is not the time to fall into a mindset of, “interview, shminterview” and lose all the precious yards you’ve just gained!

This isn’t football; you don’t have four tries to score a touchdown. You have one attempt to nail your interview and if your interviewer is anywhere near as merciless as Tom Brady facing Tim Tebow, you need to arm your defenses well in advance.

Know what to wear and what to bring, and prepare yourself for even the most grueling of interviews with a little game of 20 Questions. Get your roommate to play the role of demanding employer and grill you ahead of time on common interview queries. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Why do you want to intern for this company? Know the answer to these inquiries!

Is your interview taking place over the phone? Do your research ahead of time to ensure you ace it!

8. Stay organized!

It’s a chance higher than an intern making coffee runs that somewhere on your resume or cover letter, you declare supreme organizational skills. As a brilliant collegiette, (and potential intern), prodigious organization is a requisite and expected trait. Put these skills into practice when on the internship hunt to ensure you keep proper track of your progress.

Alexa has the right idea: “I've been hunting all over the place to find an awesome summer internship in fashion PR or magazines! I have a bookmarks folder on my browser where I save every appealing internship [and] I scan my favorite internship listing websites every day (freefashioninternships.com, InternQueen.com, etc.) to see if a new post comes up.”

Create a spreadsheet to track prospects, deadlines, the status of each application, and anything else you can think of that will ease thetedious  (but necessary) process! Google Docs offers a great, easy-to-use spreadsheet format that will ensure your attempt at organization doesn’t end up just complicating the whole operation!

9. Be a face, not just a name

Sometimes it feels hard enough to be a name and not a number, let alone a face, not just a name.

But as Sidney, a student at Hofstra University, knows, giving potential employers a face to a name will secure you an invaluable advantage: “I attend a lot of journalism events on my campus to meet professionals and always emphasize to them that I genuinely know who they are and how much I respect the success and quality of their publications. Putting in the extra effort pays off.”

Kelsey, a collegiette from Boston University, advises meeting potential employers for the first time prior to submitting your bid for an internship: “Set up informational meetings with people you admire ASAP. Not only will you get some great insight into your dream job, but you'll be adding a face to your resume and cover letter.”

Disclaimer: do not interpret this step literally and attach a headshot to the back of your resume- (sure you’re gorgeous, but leave your CV face-free).

10. Just do it!

If Nike says it, it must be true right? Sometimes after all the research, and the applications, and the cover letter writing, and the follow-up phone calls, snagging your dream internship can seem like a road fraught with more obstacles than a 500-meter hurdles race. If you really admire a particular organization or company, it may be worth it to just throw caution to the wind and contact them directly!

Nicole, a student at McGill University, says, “I emailed one of my favorite NGOs asking if I could get involved in any way. I was expecting to get a volunteer opportunity at best, but to my surprise they emailed back asking if I was interested in applying to be a summer intern! An application, cover letter, and Skype interview later, I had scored my dream internship at a literacy nonprofit in New York City!”

They say that where there’s a will there’s a way and if collegiettes have anything, it’s a will to succeed! And hey, even if all that will amounts to a limited response, if you’ve got the willpowerto see an incredibly trying process through to the end, you’re on the right track!

Whereas in Monopoly, you get the lucky break of a Get Out of Jail Free card, in the game of life, you often get only one shot. In the search for that dream internship, the pressure and competition can sometimes make you feel like folding now and saving yourself the trouble of playing your hand. But while it may be easier to spend the summer reading magazines on the hammock in your backyard as opposed to actually interning at one, that’s not the kind of girl you are, is it, collegiettes?

Nickolay Lamm Launches Average Sized Barbie

The classic, yet controversial, Barbie doll has recently gotten a makeover to become "Average Barbie." This design was based on more realistic views for women, and the demand for the doll (not created nor distributed by Mattel) has been high.

The designer of the project, Nickolay Lamm, raised $95,000 through crowd funding in order to share his idea with people who demanded a more realistic Barbie. For years, it has been noted that if a real person had Barbie's proportions, she'd have to walk on all fours and only have half a liver.

The dolls, which will be sold under the name Lammily, differ in many ways from the traditional Barbies. Celebrating "average is beautiful" the doll will feature the proportions of an average 19 year old girl, have brown hair, minimal makeup, the ability to move her wrists, elbows, knees and feet, as well as wear more sensible clothing and accessories.

We love this idea! Donate here to eventually see Average Barbie near you!

11 Things That Are Easier Than Waiting for Spring Break

In college, there's nothing more agonizing than trying to focus on schoolwork when your week of lounging on the beach or vegging out at home is only a few days away. Waiting for spring break makes even these collegiette struggles look easy!

1. Staying awake during your 8 a.m. calculus class.

2. Giving up alcohol.

3. Making it to the gym more than two days in a row.

4. Going vegan.

5. Paying off student loans.

6. Landing a summer internship.

7. Getting drunk and not tweeting about it.

8. Watching only one episode of a show on Netflix.

9. Choosing the most flattering Instagram filter.

10. Writing a 10-page paper... that's single spaced.

11. Getting through the week without wearing sweatpants to class.

Add Inches To Your Ponytail in Seconds

$

The ponytail is the go-to hairstyle for many collegiettes, whether you’re headed back from the gym, out on a date, or just rushing to class, it's a simple and effective way to pull together your look. In this new take on an old classic, we’re going to show you how to add four whole inches of length and tons of extra volume to your everyday pony. The best part? It only takes a few minutes; no extensions, heat styling, or teasing comb required!

Step 1: Start with your hair down (and dry) and divide the entirety of your hair into two sections by making a horizontal part across the back of your head. Make sure the top section is thicker than the bottom.

Step 2: Take the top section and put that hair into a ponytail, securing it with a hair elastic (make sure the ponytail isn’t too low on the back of your head!).

Step 3: Moving the top ponytail out of the way, gather the bottom half of your hair into another mini ponytail, securing it just above the nape of your neck.

Step 4: Arrange the top ponytail so that it blends in with the smaller one, creating the illusion of an extra long and full ponytail.

This trick works best if you have long hair but you can make it work on almost any length, you might just have to move the bottom ponytail up a bit. For added volume you can tease the top ponytail or add some soft curls to blend the top and bottom ponytails together. Maximum effect with minimal effort? Sounds good to us.

Collegiette Eats: Eats in Buenos Aires

$

Sick of eating cereal and ramen for lunch and dinner? Want to spend less money eating out and finally start cooking for yourself? Put down that frozen pizza because HC's Health Editor, Sammie Levin, is here to share her daily eats so you can get ideas for healthy, satisfying meals that are easy enough for any time-strapped collegiette to make. After you read Collegiette Eats, your taste buds, wallet and waistline will thank you.

I traveled through Argentina for spring break, so I thought I'd share my eats along the way. I started my trip in Buenos Aires, where my friend is studying abroad, and I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and wine and the favorable exchange rate. Here are the highlights from day one.

Brunch

I was wiped out from traveling, so we got a late start to the day. Apparently Argentina isn't big on traditional breakfasts, but as Western influence is increasingly spreading, more breakfast and brunch spots are starting to pop up. We went to a cafe right down the street from my friend's homestay house. The place was adorable, like a dollhouse you'd want to have a tea party in. The chairs were lined with floral fabric and it was decorated in such a cute way. We ate outside to enjoy the warm weather (!) and people watch.

We ordered "the Natural," which came with yogurt parfaits, toast with jam, fresh-squeezed orange juice and coffee or tea. I got a cappuccino and it was the best coffee I've had in a while. It came in a huge mug too, which was exactly what I needed. The jams - berry and orange marmalade - were also so good on the thick toast. It came with some cream cheese-like spread that kind of tasted like ricotta cheese and made it even better. I remember in elementary school, I used to eat cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, so this reminded me of a grown-up version of that. But I think my favorite part of the meal was the orange juice because it was so fresh and pulpy. I was sad when I finished it, it was that good.

Dinner

We went out to a nice dinner to celebrate the first night at a restaurant called Astor. If you ever find yourself in Buenos Aires, I highly recommend going to this place; it had a great atmosphere and even better food. To start, we split a bowl of gazpacho. It was made with white tomatoes, which I had never seen before, and it was creamier than most gazpachos I've had. It had a really good, unique flavor. Meat is big in Argentina, but I decided to get fish because it sounded good on the menu and I figured I'd be eating enough steak and other meat throughout the rest of the week that I might as well start light. It was a grilled white fish that came with pesto and sautéed vegetables. It was top-notch, flaky fish grilled to perfection. My friend got veal with polenta and vegetables, which was also incredible. The meat was beyond tender; it tasted like heaven. We also got a bottle of wine, which of course made everything taste even better. And we got all of this - at a really nice restaurant - for less than 20 dollars per person. Unreal!

My eats on the first day weren't traditional Argentine fare, but don't worry - there are plenty of empanadas to come, so stay tuned!

Why did a Malaysia Airlines plane suddenly disappear with 239 people on board? Is Dorian Nakamoto really the founder of Bitcoin? And will South African runner Oscar Pistorius be found guilty in his girlfriend's murder? These are all the unanswered questions that crept up in international news this week, with details that have yet to be uncovered.

Welcome back to NEWSFLASH, giving you the week's biggest stories!

Malaysia Airlines Planes Disappears With 239 On Board

A Malaysia Airlines commercial plane mysteriously vanished on its way to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, leaving crews and government officials in a frenzy over the fate of 239 passengers on board the aircraft.

Flight MH370 fell off the radar on Saturday after departing from Kuala Lumpur. More than half the passengers were Chinese nationals with many foreigners as well based on a released passenger list.

Two of the passengers, however, reported that they did not board the plane because their passports were stolen. Police are reviewing footage of two passengers that could have possibly taken the passports, leading to fears that terrorism could have played a role in MH370’s disappearance.

A multinational team that includes the U.S. began searching the waters near South Vietnam. A Vietnamese crew reported seeing two oil slicks that are characteristic of a plane crash over water, though they have not linked the discovery to MH370.

There are suspicions that the plane may have turned back towards Kuala Lumpur, but no developments in the MH370 case have confirmed the theory.

Bitcoin Inventor Supposedly Revealed

A Newsweek article published this Thursday incited a flurry of Internet activity as L.A. area resident Dorian Nakamoto was unmasked as the supposed founder of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Leah McGrath Goodman’s feature pulled from interviews with Nakamoto’s family members and government databases to identify the 64-year-old Japanese American as Bitcoin’s founder. While Nakamoto himself refused to speak to Goodman, the Newsweek reporter laid out her research so thoroughly that there was almost no doubt in many people’s eyes that Nakamoto truly launched Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was invented in 2009 as a digital, peer-to-peer currency to be used online. It gained newfound popularity in 2013 when the Silk Road website was shut down, an event that made millions more aware of Bitcoin’s existence and function.

Nakamoto denied that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, claiming that he is “no longer involved in that and [he] cannot discuss it.” He claimed to the L.A. Times and the Associated Press that Goodman misconstrued his words, and that he is not the true founder of Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin community was far from thrilled with the Newsweek reveal. Many questioned Goodman’s decision to publish the exposé on Nakamoto’s life when he clearly refused to be identified. Others believe that Goodman has put Nakamoto in a position where his life may be threatened, given the hazy legality of Bitcoin and its lucrative moneymaking potential.

Nakamoto has not followed up with any more statements.

South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’ Murder Trial Begins

South African “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius appeared in court this week to fight a murder charge that sprang from last year’s death of his then-girlfriend.

Pistorius’ neighbors and a former girlfriend were called in to testify and piece together what truly occurred that fateful Valentine’s Day night. Witnesses who lived in Pistorius’ neighborhood claimed that they heard “blood-curling screams” from a woman followed by deliberate gunshots, leaving Pistorius, 27, sobbing and covering his face.

Other witnesses, including Pistorius’ former ex-girlfriend and friend, uncovered the athlete’s love for firearms and his carelessness when in possession of them. Notable incidents included the friend’s testimony that Pistorius accidentally fired off a gun in a restaurant, and then proceeded to blame a family friend for the incident.

Pistorius was arrested last February after an altercation that left his model girlfriend, 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, dead. The Paralympian admitted to shooting Steenkamp, who was hit with four bullets, but claimed that her death was an accident.

The trial is expected to last several weeks, as less than 10 percent of witnesses have been called to take the stand.
