Sexual Violence Costs the U.S. Billions of Dollars

$

Gender inequality and sexual violence have been at the forefront of news for some time now—even just on college campuses, the issue is huge. It is no surprise that sexual violence and assaults can devastate a woman’s life and mental health. A recent study now says that it affects our economy, too.

The McKinsey Global Institute, a research firm that focuses on helping leaders in every sector understand how policy issues affect the global economy, released results on Thursday that points to how much sexual assault is really costing the U.S. To be more exact, researchers at the institute found that violence against women in the nation results in $4.9 billion in direct costs—medical expenses, lost productivity and lost earnings. Including indirect costs (i.e. the cost of suffering and decreased quality of life), that number could shoot up to around $500 billion.

Graphic by Bridget Higgins

The study also put out an equally shocking statistic: “More than 39 million women—nearly one-third of the US female population—have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, from slapping to beating.” More than 95 percent of this violence occurs in households with a total income of less than $75,000.

According to Refinery29, about 70 percent of these initial violent incidents happen to young women between the ages of 11 and 24.

The bad news does come with a glimmer of hope, though. If the U.S. addresses the vast gender inequality at least moderately, the about $2.1 trillion could be added to the GDP by 2025—adding over six million jobs to the workforce.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time set up by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to raise public awareness about sexual violence education and prevention. Sexual violence is something this society should never stand for, not only because of economics, but because no woman should ever experience such abuse.

Bill Clinton Argues With Black Lives Matter Protesters Over Superpredator Comment

Hillary Clinton is the democratic front runner in an extremely competitive race for the presidential nomination against Bernie Sanders. Good ol’ Bill, former U.S. President, has been trying to help his wife on the campaign trail. However, he tends toward hurting the campaign more than helping it—which could have well been the case when he decided to address Black Lives Matter protesters this week.

On Thursday, Bill Clinton engaged in a pretty heated exchange with Black Lives Matter protesters in Philadelphia. He not only defended his wife’s presidential bid, but he even went back to talking about his 1994 crime bill—one that intended to crack down on gangs, but managed to overload U.S. prisons, according to CNN.

This didn’t stop Clinton from talking about the 22-year-old bill, though. “Because of [crime] bill, we have a 25-year low in crime, a 30-year low in the murder rate, and…a 46-year low in deaths of lives by gun violence.” He didn’t mention this, but U.S. also has the highest prison population rate in the world.

Another one of Bill’s major issues was with a protester who held a sign saying, “Black youth are not superpredators.” This was in reference to when Hillary used the term in a 1996 speech at Keene State College in New Hampshire when she was supporting her husband’s 1994 Violent Crime Control Act, which disproportionately put people of color in prison. Since then, it's been proven that there's no such thing as a superpredator. Though you wouldn't know that from Bill's retort.

“I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out onto the street to murder other African-American children…Maybe you thought they were good citizens. She didn’t,” Bill said, according to Esquire.

CNN reported that Clinton claimed to “love protesters.” He went on to clarify, saying “Here’s the thing. I like protesters, but the ones that won’t let you answer are afraid of the truth. That’s a simple rule.”

Despite his “love” for protesters, fighting with Black Lives Matter members was not the smartest move. African American support is an ever-important section of the Democratic base for candidates. It's not a given that Bill’s clumsiness would affect Hillary’s favorability among black voters—she won nearly 90 percent of the black voters in Alabama and Arkansas, and more than 80 percent in Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. However, Bill needs to remember one thing: this race is about Hillary, not him.

Police Searching for Person of Interest in Murder of UT Austin Freshman

A video appearing to show a person of interest in the "brutal murder" of an 18-year-old first-year student at the University of Texas at Austin was released on Thursday morning, according to My San Antonio.

The video was taken on Sunday night and shows a man, possibly a 6 ft. tall black male, pushing a red or pink bicycle while wearing a backpack.

On Tuesday morning, the body of Haruka Weiser was found by police, who have come up with a timeline of events surrounding her disappearance. Authorities say that the dance major was last seen on April 3 at around 9:30 p.m. leaving the drama building.

"She had communicated with one of her friends so we were pretty confident that we knew the direction she had traveled and the way she had traveled back to her dormitory," said Troy Gay, assistant chief at the Austin Police Department, according to My San Antonio. "She never made it to her dormitory that night."

By 11:30 the next morning, Weiser's roommates had called and reported her missing. After conducting a search, her body was found in a creek on Tuesday.

"The unthinkable brutality against Haruka is an attack on our entire family," said university President Gregory Fenves at a press conference Thursday. "Law enforcement is fully engaged to do everything to bring the perpetrator who committed this crime to justice."

Weiser's parents also released a statement.

"Haruka, our beloved daughter, sister, and friend was taken from us too soon," it read. "The pain from our sudden and tragic loss is unfathomable...words cannot express the outpouring of love we have received."

Julane Stites, a department head at Weiser's high school, described Weiser as a "dancer in her soul," according to KOIN 6 News. "She was intelligent, spirited and stunningly beautiful and worked hard every day to realize her dreams," Stites said. "She was loved and respected throughout the arts and dance community."

According to The Daily Texan, the number of police vehicles, extra authorities, and van shuttles has increased on campus since Weiser's body was discovered.

Ivy League Lacrosse Coach Fired After Hitting Player

During a game over the weekend, Princeton's men's lacrosse coach elbowed an opposing player as he ran off the field, ESPN reports. Coach Chris Bates was fired earlier this week.

Bates was caught on video elbowing Brown University player John Yozzo-Scaperrotta as he headed off the field toward the substitution box during the game at Brown—which Brown won 19-8—on Saturday, the New York Daily News reports.

"There's more context to the story than what appears in a :5 clip," Bates told the New York Daily News in an email. Just before Bates hit him, Yozzo-Scaperrotta had crashed into a Princeton player during the game, ESPN reports.

The video, however, speaks for itself:

Princeton is now searching to replace Bates. In the meantime, offensive coordinator Matt Madalon will take his place, ESPN reports.

Directioners Have This Crazy Theory That Louis's Baby Isn't Real

We all know that Directioners are an extremely passionate group of fans, but this new theory of theirs is pretty insane. This isn't the first time that 1D fans have perpetuated a certain theory (i.e. the Larry Stylinson bromance). When news first broke that Briana Jungwirth was pregnant with Louis's child, fans had plenty to say. However, their latest claim is kind of absurd (to say the least). According to some Directioners, Louis's baby doesn't even exist IRL!

Lad and Dad

A photo posted by Louis Tomlinson (@louist91) on

Bear with us, as we try to explain this theory as best as we can. To sum it up, fans are basically convinced that Freddie isn't a real baby. Instead, they believe that the photos posted online are all completely staged. Say whaaat?

It all started last year, when someone created a Twitter account called @BrianaFacts. Seems harmless, right? The weird thing is that the account was created just two days before Louis and Briana were first photographed in public. Since then, Directioners began further shaping their bizarre theory.

Remember that time a fake baby was thrown onstage and Louis shook off the situation? Well, fans are convinced that the event was no such coincidence. Aside from that, fans suspect that paparazzi photos of Louis and Briana look way too posed. Were the paps tipped off? Fans say it's a definite yes.

Are you convinced that this theory is true, or is it all just rubbish?

West Virginia Frat Suspended Over Reality TV Audition Tape

Delta Tau Delta at West Virginia University was suspended after posting a sexist and NSFW audition tape for MTV's Real World, Cosmopolitan reports. The video has since been deleted.

MTV held an open casting for the show at WVU last month, theCharleston-Gazette Mail reports, after which fraternity member Stephen Budkey posted a video of himself walking around the Delta Tau Delta house at WVU, explaining his life in the frat. In a clip of the video posted by the Daily Mail, Bukdey talks about "where the magic happens," which for him is apparently "behind a dumpster." He goes on to mention that he has "bitches" who clean his room in the frat house.

The fraternity has been suspended indefinitely for the video that was posted to Budkey's personal YouTube account, the Daily Mail reports. The full video includes references to parties and events not endorsed by the university and which violate the school's Interfraternity Council (the governing body for all university fraternities) regulations, Cosmopolitan reports.

Delta Tau Delta's suspension comes after almost 1,000 members of Greek life at WVU volunteered in the communty last week, according to the Charleston-Gazette Mail.

“That is certainly more indicative of what Greek life is about,” Roy Baker, associate dean of students and director of Greek life at WVU told the Charleston-Gazette Mail.

Budkey told the Daily Mail that he's sorry, and that he was just trying to play the part of an outrageous reality TV star.

"This was an over exaggeration of my personality, in order to stand out among other candidates. I was under the impression that my crude behavior and language was what casting directors were in search of, so I played the part," he said. "I realize my actions have reflected poorly on my own character, and the organizations I affiliate myself with. I only hope that my actions will be forgiven. In the future I will hold myself to the standards at which my peers, family, university and myself expect."

Ashley S. may not have found love on The Bachelor, but it looks like she’s getting her happy ending after all. She and fiancé Austin Brannen took to Instagram yesterday morning to introduce to the world their new bundle of joy. Salter (yes, she does have an actual last name) captioned the sweet family photo, “Long stormy night brings a beautiful angel this morning. Brooks Hartman Brannen 7lbs 2oz 4/7/16”

Salter, who appeared on Bachelor Chris Soules's season as well as spin-off Bachelor in Paradise, announced her pregnancy just two months ago on the television special, The Bachelor at 20: A Celebration of Love.

While Baby Brooks is incredibly cute, the love story leading up to his birth is quite possibly even cuter. Salter and Brannen were actually college sweethearts at Auburn University. There was a falling out of sorts along the way, but that didn’t stop the couple from reuniting last summer shortly after Salter’s appearance on Bachelor in Paradise.

Brannen proposed to Salter in September, and they announced their engagement with an Instagram post jokingly captioned, “12 is better than one #roses.”

Congratulations to Salter and Brannen on the newest addition to their family!

Jennifer Lawrence Calls For a New 'Normal' Body Type

From her public mishaps to her candid remarks, Jennifer Lawrence seems like a normal girl we can all relate to. But in her recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, Lawrence is firing back at people who call her normal—or at least, those who call her body type normal. She speaks on our society's warped perception of body types and says she would "like us to make a new normal-body type."

"Everybody says, 'We love that there is somebody with a normal body!' And I'm like, 'I don't feel like I have a normal body,'" Lawrence explains. "I do Pilates every day. I eat, but I work out a lot more than a normal person."

She continues on to ponder the reason behind the widely-skewed perception of body types: "I think we've gotten so used to underweight that when you are a normal weight it's like, 'Oh, my God, she's curvy.' Which is crazy."

The notion of underweight people being "normal" has been a reoccuring issue in the entertainment industry. Earlier this year, Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson was turned down from a role because she was "too fat"—despite being a size 2!

We can only hope that with more celebrities speaking out about body image, we can dismantle the notion that only skinny bodies are "normal," and we can begin to embrace ALL body types.

Gigi Hadid Asks Fans Not to Wait Outside Her Home For Pictures

Gigi Hadid has quickly become one of the most in-demand models in the industry. Let's face it: At 20 years old, she's accomplished tons, from multiple magazine covers to major fashion shows. Not to mention she's in Taylor Swift's all-powerful girl squad. So yeah, Gigi is basically slaying right now.

With her growing popularity, Gigi has also had to face some less-glamorous aspects of being in the spotlight. We've seen people like Kylie Jenner get mobbed by fans and paparazzi in the past, and Gigi has been experiencing the same issue lately.

Even though Gigi frequently proclaims her love for her loyal fans, there are boundaries that simply shouldn't be crossed. A few days ago, the model took to Twitter, asking fans not to wait outside her NYC home. Apparently, fans have been waiting outside, hoping to snap a photo with Gigi!

In a very classy tweet, Gigi explained her need for some measure of privacy:

While we all would love to take a photo with Gigi, this is just unacceptable. Gigi's home is supposed to be her safe haven, away from the constant attention. Let's hope her fans will comply with her request.

What Lip Color You Should Rock This Weekend, Based On Your Sign

$

When it comes to picking out nail polish colors, we often don’t think twice about branching out of our comfort zone with a daring new shade. However, it’s safe to say that lip color is a whole different game. If you’re having trouble deciding which lip color you should rock when you’re headed out this weekend, look no further than the stars for inspiration.

Red: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Some things just never go out of style. While red may not be the most unusual lip color out there, it hands-down remains the most daring and intense, which is fitting for the fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Not only does red lipstick equip you with an extra boost of confidence, but it shows you’re not afraid to take action. Hesitant to make a move on that guy you’ve been crushing on for weeks? Nervous to be the first one on the dance floor? This fiery shade—Fearless by ELF ($1, eyeslipsface.com)—should do the trick.

If you have a paler skin tone and are worried about pulling off a color so dark and bold, look no further than Taylor Swift herself, who has made deep red lipstick a staple in her make-up routine.

Nude: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

For Earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, less is always more. Even when you’re going out and dressing up, you still like to keep things simple. Nude lip shades are your go-to because they’re natural-looking, practical, and can be paired with a variety of outfits and styles. Whether you’re hitting the bars this weekend or watching Netflix with your SO, you know you’ll be able to pull off this look night after night. Since everyone’s skin tone is different, it’s important to try out a few nude shades before settling on the one that’s best for you. KISSING by Charlotte Tilbury ($32, charlottetilbury.com) is a good place to start.

If you're not a fan of wearing lipstick in general, nude shades can be a great gateway to bolder looks. Since they're so natural-looking, you won't have to worry about standing out too much while you're still learning and experimenting with what shade is best for you. Similar to buying concealer and foundation, look for the color that most closely matches your skin tone and go from there.

Related: 5 Beauty Products You Use, But Probably Shouldn't

Peach: Gemini, Libra, Aquaris

Air signs are known for being thoughtful, social and inspiring, so it’s not surprising that they’re always up to date on the latest fashion and beauty trends. If you’re a Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius looking to make a statement this spring and summer, look no further than one of 2016’s hottest shades: peach. This fun and playful shade will have you turning heads in no time, and makes a perfect pair with your new sundress or bikini. Bronzed Peach by Covergirl ($5.99, CVS) sets the standard.

If you’re looking to take your trendsetting one step further, you could take a chance on another one of this season’s boldest colors: orange. If you’re nervous about trying a color outside of your comfort zone, start with Orange Blossom by Macaron Lippie ($5.99, Ulta). If you try it and decide you're not ready for the color, it won't break your bank, either.

Plum: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces have earned reputations for being the deepest thinkers and the biggest dreamers, so they need an equally deep and daring color to match. While dark purple lipstick may seem hard to pull off at first, it can become a game-changing look when you figure out what shade is best for you—some may seem more red-tinted, while others even look brown or blue-ish. Use your creative thinking, open mind, and don’t be afraid to take a few shades for a test run before a big night out. Try this deep plum shade, Shame from Urban Decay ($22, Urban Decay).

When it comes to lipstick, it’s easy to get stuck in the habit of wearing your same old, go-to shade. However, with summer on the horizon, there’s no better time to try out a new look. Use your new-found astrological inspiration to make a statement when you go out this weekend. Keep on slaying!

5 Things to Do if You Find Yourself in Debt in Your 20s

$
0
0

We know it might feel daunting and even a little scary to be in debt in your 20s. Don’t panic! Rather than bury our heads in the sand, let’s take a deep dive into taking control of your debt.

Get Organized

The first step to any debt management plan is to figure out exactly how much you owe. Grab a piece of paper, open up a spreadsheet, or try out an online account aggregation tool like Mint, Personal Capital, or Tuition.io (for student loans). List the type of debt, lender, current amount you owe (also known as the principal balance), interest rate, and minimum payment for each loan.

Understand Interest

When you take on debt, you agree to repay the original loan amount back over time plus interest, which usually accrues daily. Each time you make a payment on your debt, a portion is used to cover the interest expense that has accrued since your last payment. The remainder pays down your principal balance. Let’s say you have $5,000 in credit card debt at an interest rate of 18%. When you pay your minimum payment of $100 each month, $75 covers the accrued interest and $25 reduces your remaining balance. Now you owe $4,975. As you continue to repay your debt, the portion of your payment that goes to interest will go down and the portion to principal will go up. Why? Because there is less to pay interest on as you pay down the principal balance.

Stop Adding to Your Debt

If you’ve noticed your credit card balance creeping up, you may find it's time to make a change and aim to live more within your means. The best step to taking control of your debt, especially credit card debt, is simply to stop adding to it! Take a hard look at how you’ve been spending. Most of us could find a few instances of mindless or convenience spending that may be easy to cut back on or even eliminate altogether. To resist the temptation to splurge, leave your credit card at home (you can even freeze it in a block of ice if it will help!), and consider adopting an all-cash system. Whatever the strategy, find one that helps you spend within your means and in a way that focuses on the things that you value most.

If You’re a New Grad with Student Loans, Take Advantage of Your Grace Period

You will not be required to make payments on your student loans during your grace period—the time between the end of classes, but before your first student loan payment is due. This period is usually six to nine months, depending on the type of loan. Even though you don’t technically have any payment due, you may want to act like you do. “Pay yourself” your monthly minimum and put this amount in a savings account. Not only will you get used to making room in your budget for this new financial obligation, you will also accumulate a nice little cash cushion along the way.

Pay a Little Extra Whenever You Can

Always pay at least the minimum payment each month in order to stay current, avoid late fees, and keep your credit history in tact. However, it never hurts to pay extra toward your highest interest rate loan if you can—even a little can go a long way. Remember that $5,000 in credit card debt at 18% interest we talked about earlier? Rather than paying the minimum payment of $100 each month, what would happen if you paid $120 per month instead? This seemingly insignificant increase would save you $1,400 in interest and the debt would be paid off two years sooner! Use a loan repayment calculator to see how you can benefit from increasing your own monthly payments.

Debt gets a pretty bad rap and it can feel overwhelming to find yourself in debt in your 20s. The best way to take on a daunting debt situation is to put a strategy in place to help manage it. Once you know all the details of your loans and exactly how interest works, you’ll be armed with the knowledge to tackle your debt head on and get on the road to being debt free.

17 Things You Learn When You Realize You Deserve Better

$
0
0

There is a realization that every woman has at least once in her life that inspires her to learn, grow and love herself -- the realization that she deserves better. Whatever the situation, be it an emotionally unavailable significant other, a fair-weather friend or an internship or job that fails to recognize your worth, the realization that you deserve better is an integral part in your self-happiness. When you realize you deserve better, you learn to forgive, move on, love yourself and find the happiness in your life you’ve been missing.

1. You’ll understand everyone in your life serves a purpose -- the one who made you realize you deserve better was a lesson

So there’s no use in hanging on to “what ifs” and “could have beens." Once you realize you deserve better, you’ll begin to understand the purpose each person plays in your life. Some are meant to stay, and some are meant to teach you valuable lessons and then depart. Its not your choice which ones are which.

2. You’ll learn the importance of self-realization, or realizing for yourself that you deserve better

The first step in attaining self-worth is realizing when you’re in a situation that isn’t advantageous to you in any way. Once you realize you deserve better, you strive for better and attain better.

3. You’ll realize time is the most precious asset you have, don’t waste it on someone who plays games

Your time should be viewed as invaluable, and once you realize you deserve better, you’ll understand the importance of genuinity, getting straight to the point and not wasting your time or mental capacity chasing after someone or something you don’t deserve.

4. You’ll finally understand that sorry doesn’t always mean “it won’t happen again”

Sometimes, it is too late to say sorry.

5. You’ll be confused why you ever put up with certain situations in the first place

Once you realize you deserve better, you’ll look back at all the times you settled for worse.

6. You’ll learn to stop making excuses for people

Because hollow promises and empty excuses just don’t cut it anymore.

7. You’ll learn to stop being petty and start understanding the importance of moving on

Because being petty is a waste of your own mental  energy.

8. You’ll probably remember your friends told you so

They were right, and you probably ignored them, and they’re probably going to tell you “I told you so,” but just know that they mean well.

9. While you’re at it, you’ll probably realize your mom was right

Pro tip: she always is.

10. You’ll learn the importance of letting go of past insecurities

They’ll haunt you if you let them -- just know you are more than your insecurities.

11. You’ll learn to hold yourself to a higher standard

Because you’ll stop settling for less, and won’t ever be satisfied until you get what you truly deserve.

12. You’ll learn that being happy is more important than seeking revenge

Revenge does not equate to happiness because revenge is external and happiness is internal. Once you are truly happy with yourself, you no longer seek revenge, and instead forgive -- for your own sake, because you deserve it.

13. You’ll understand the difference between giving up and moving on

Because there is a difference -- don’t feel as though you need to stay in a situation out of fear of “giving up,” there are no losers or quitters when trying to improve your quality of life.

14. You’ll learn to stop comparing yourself to other people and situations that don’t apply to you

Because when you realize you deserve better, you realize you’re not going to get that “better” by competing and comparing.

15. You’ll understand that everything in life happens for a reason, and what is not meant for you will never be yours

So stop stressing about it, and understand that when you realize you deserve better, and hold yourself to that standard, your life will dramatically improve, and slowly everything will work out in the end.

16. You’ll realize your self-worth does not decrease based on someone else’s inability to see your value

Your past does not define you or your value, and you do not need someone else do validate your worth.

17 You’ll realize no one will ever love you like you love you -- and that’s okay

You’re kind of stuck with yourself forever, may as well love yourself.

Disney Princess Life vs. Real Life

$

Let’s be real, we all wanted to grow up to be Disney Princesses. The beautiful dresses, the huge castles… not to mention a handsome Prince Charming to live happily ever after with! It’s easy to get our hopes up with all of the expectations that Disney sets. Too bad our realities are slightly different from those of animated princesses...

Princess Life: Waking up and getting ready is effortless. Those woodland creatures are just so helpful!

Reality: No number of cute animals will make you on time for your 8 a.m. class or fix your bed head.

Princess Life: Living in a castle with a beautiful, spacious room is a given.

Reality: Gotta love your eight-by-eight square-foot shoebox that you share with a roommate. #dormlife

Princess Life: True love at first sight is a real thing. Happens all the time.

Reality: Does a drunken hookup at a bar count?

Princess Life: Sure, you may have to kiss a frog, but he'll totally turn into the man of your dreams shortly afterwards.

Reality: Five frat bros later, you're starting to believe you're doomed to kissing frogs forever.

Princess Life: Bad hair days never exist because your locks look flawless no matter what the conditions are.

Reality: Thank goodness for dry shampoo because your second-day hair is looking like a greasy hot mess. Hat day anyone?

Princess Life: You lose a shoe? Your prince will use it to find you and marry you.

Reality: You lose a shoe? Girl, go home, you’re drunk.

Princess Life: If you just love someone enough, he or she'll turn from a horrible beast into Prince Charming. People really can change.

Reality: Nope, he’s still an assh*le.

Princess Life: Finding the perfect dress is easy! Then you find a prince at the ball and all your dreams come true.

Reality: It takes hours to find a mediocre outfit that you end up spilling your drink on anyways. Your only true dream is pizza at the end of the night.

Princess Life: Princes will search far and wide, face danger and devote all their time to find their one true love.

Reality: Receiving a text from your crush before 11 p.m. is considered a win.

How & Why to Intern the Summer Before College

By now, you probably understand just how important it is to take advantage of your summers while you’re still in high school. Whether you’re working a part-time job, babysitting every kid on your street or taking an online class, the summer is a great time to get ahead! While everyone else is shopping for their dorm room décor, stand out from the crowd by scoring an internship for the summer between your senior year of high school and freshman year of college!

Internships are a great way to start gaining real-world experience, determine a possible career path for the future and boost your resume. Not to mention, you may even have the opportunity to make some extra cash, if you find a paid internship! We’ve talked to collegiettes and experts alike to get the scoop on what it takes to get an internship early on (and why it’s a good idea).

Why it’s important

Although the word “resume” may be new to your vocabulary, it’s likely that you’ll start building yours as early as your freshman year of college. Being able to include a summer internship on your resume will help you stand out from the crowd and open doors for other job or internship opportunities early in your college career.

“This is your time to explore your interests without the pressure of having to be completely practical,” says Allison Cheston, an internship expert and founder of Career Connector. “It is also the first time that you will be categorized as an undergraduate, which is an important distinction for internships—there are many more opportunities now that you’re [about to become] a college student.” Luckily, you can take advantage of your collegiette status before you’ve even stepped foot on campus by snagging an internship!

Searching for an internship online

When searching for an internship, it’s important to consider what your passions are. While working in a traditional office setting may look good on your resume, the summer will drag on if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing. Instead, decide on a few causes or organizations that you’re eager to become involved with and then research what opportunities they offer.

The Internet can be a great starting place for researching internships. “All of the internship sites are organized by [geographic] location,” says Cheston, who recommends trying YouternInternships.com, FindSpark, andInternMatch.

If you’re passionate about animals, look for internship options at your local animal shelter or veterinary office. If you want to pursue a career in education or love working with kids, there are tons of options for working with elementary and middle school aged kids in the summer, so keep your eyes peeled for those, too!

Networking for an internship

Keep in mind that just because a company or organization doesn’t have a pre-existing internship program, it doesn’t mean that they won’t be willing to offer one. If you’re really eager to intern at a certain organization, start by emailing or visiting them on-site. If you explain your internship goals and availability, they may be able to customize a program to meet your needs.

“In between my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college,” says Dani Kluss, a senior at California Lutheran University, “I interned as an assistant stage manager at my local professional theatre. One of my friends was friends with the director at the theatre and got him to agree to let me job shadow him. After I job shadowed him I sent a follow-up email the next day thanking him for his time and asking him to keep in contact with me if there were any internships available in the summer. A few months later, his assistant contacted me and set me up for the internship!”

Having a connection with a local business or company can one of the best ways to score an internship before college, “I highly recommend students find their internships through teachers, friends, family and others who take a personal interest in the student,” says Cheston. “It’s ideal to create your own internship, but you have to take initiative.”

You can start taking initiative by reaching out to someone in your own school. “[In high school], I was assigned a mentor who was actually our principal,” says Shira Kipnees, a senior at Franklin and Marshall College. “She knew I liked to write, so she suggested I talk to another student’s mom who worked for a local newspaper company. I ended up calling the company directly to see if they had any internships available, and after being recommended by the person I spoke with on the phone, I was offered an interview.”

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take advantage of the resources that your school and community offer. “Ask around your school to see who can help you,” says Shira. “A friend’s parent may be a good resource, or your school may be able to put you in touch with alumni or people involved in the school at a company you’d like to work at someday.” Look for help anywhere!

Making the most of your internship

By interning the summer before college, you can gain real-world experience before your classmates and be on your way to deciding what you really want to study this upcoming year. Talk to your co-workers about their career paths, college experiences and what majors they pursued.

“[My summer internship] was my first experience in the newspaper world,” says Shira, “and it really showed me how much I enjoyed journalism. It was enough to help me get other internships down the line, and I came into college knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my career.”

Although spending your last summer before college in an internship may not sound ideal, the hard work will likely pay off once you’re on campus. “My internship ended up getting me letters of recommendation that I used to get half of my tuition paid for in scholarships,” says Dani. “It really becomes a fantastic networking tool for the rest of your life.” Who wouldn’t love that?

“This is the ideal time to try out different work experiences to identify strengths and interests,” says Cheston. “It’s too early to be 100 percent sure about [your] career choice. This is the time to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t.”

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and take a risk with a company or internship in a field that’s new to you. “Try branching out a bit further and consider doing something a bit unrelated [to your potential field],” says Cheston. “You never know what will spark a new career idea.”

Although pursuing a summer internship while you’re still in high school may sound intimidating, it’s never too early to start the search. Make the most of the upcoming summer and you’ll be able to head off to college in the fall with experience, confidence, and (maybe) even a little extra cash. Best of luck, pre-collegiettes!

Kanye West Jokes That He Hasn't Been Invited to Rob Kardashian's Wedding

According to Kanye West, an invitiation to Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna's wedding hasn't been extended to him yet. After an exciting week in Vail, Colorado, with the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner family, Kanye was spotted in LAX checking in for a flight to the Philippines. Of course the topic of his brother-in-law's surprise engagement came up, and he was asked if he would be attending the wedding.

West's response was, "You know what? I haven't been invited."

A Kardashian wedding without Kanye West in attendance? Say it ain't so!

He was then asked about the rest of the family's feelings toward the controversial union. "You know, Rob is my brother. I love Rob," he said, clapping his hands. "I just roll with it. I love Rob, that's all I can say. I love Rob."

While West seems to be joking about his lack of invite, the rest of the family may not be on board with attending the event. An insider told Us Weekly that they are less than enthused about Rob marrying model-turned makeup artist, Blac Chyna.

We're hoping that the KarJenners can look past the drama and eventually be at peace with Rob's newfound happiness!

Dr. Luke Produced Jennifer Lopez's New Song, But It's Not What You Think

Jennifer Lopez's hot performance of her new single, "Ain't Your Mama," on Thursday night's American Idol finale is under a bit of fire. The song, which is about refusing to deal with a guy who acts like a baby because you're definitely not his mom and you actually have a life, is quite similar to Meghan Trainor's "Dear Future Husband."

And it's no coincidence. Trainor has writing credits on "Ain't Your Mama."

Despite the positive message behind J. Lo's song, however, people were more concerned with the fact that the song was co-produced by Dr. Luke, the pop producer being sued by Kesha for sexual abuse. Dr. Luke has been adamant in maintaining that her allegations are false, claiming that her accusations are only a scheme to get out of their legally binding contract.

We guess it kind of makes sense that Lopez's new song was misconstrued as a subtle endorsement of the troubled producer. After all, it's just plain odd that a singer who oozes female empowerment would work with a producer charged with sexual abuse allegations. The reason for the odd team-up?

According to a source at E! News, Trainor wrote the song years ago and Dr. Luke produced it at the time, long before Kesha's lawsuit was filed. Lopez just returned to Sony-owned, Epic Records, after over five years of working with Universal Music Group's Island Def Jam. Trainor had the song, let Lopez hear it and she ended up loving it. They recorded it in the past two months.

Dr. Luke had no role in the finished production of the song and never worked with Lopez in recording it.

We figured it was all a big misunderstanding and are glad that J. Lo's name has been cleared!
