This is The Top University Both Students & Parents Choose As Their 'Dream' School

$

The most important decisions in a young person’s life often include what to wear on a date, which Starbucks coffee to order, and of course—Which college to choose.

According to NBC News, across the board, the most popular “dream” school chosen by both students and parents is Stanford University. In Princeton Review’s 2016 College Hopes & Worries Survey Report, more than 8,300 college applicants and 2000 parents participated in the study, coming from all U.S. states and 20 other countries abroad. Stanford University topped the list of dream schools in both students' and parents’ picks, with Harvard College ranking number two in both lists as well.

The survey also found that the biggest college worry was student debt, which has been the most fretted-over factor of the college process for the last three years. However, 44 percent of those surveyed said that the most beneficial part of the college degree would be the chance to acquire a "potentially better job and high income," showing that people truly believe a degree is worth the debt they might find themselves in post-graduation.

Despite the range of responses, it's interesting to see that people agree on one thing: Stanford is the place to be.

Belmont Student Sends Mom a Hilarious Life-Size Cutout While Abroad

Studying abroad can leave parents with a sense of excitement, or empty nest syndrome. Dalton Ross, a Belmont University student spending the semester in London, decided to send his mom something to keep her company until he came home.

Most parents are the ones sending the care packages as opposed to receiving them from kids who are frolicking abroad—so no one really expected Dalton to send his mom a life-sized cutout of himself (yes, one very similar to that Niall Horan cutout we know you still have in your bedroom at home).

Ross most likely didn't expect his mom's response to be just as hysterical as his original gift.

Susan Talley, Ross' mom, decided to make sure her "son" didn't miss out on any of the family shenanigans while he was away. She took the cutout to the batting cages, and even set her "son" up on a date.

Talley made sure to upload all of these pictures to Facebook for friends and family to see.

“My mom is funny and out-joked me on this one,” Ross told the Huffington Post.

These two definitely gave us some ideas for how to handle the study abroad separation anxiety with a sense of humor.

Someone Wants to Make Beer From Vaginal Bacteria

Would you drink beer made with vaginal bacteria? Most people probably wouldn't, but that isn't stopping one company from trying to raise 150,000 euros to make it.

Cosmopolitan reports that Order of Yoni has a beer product that is brewed with the lactic acid swabbed from the inside of a woman’s vagina. But, the company insists that this is totally clean, especially since they are only using the vaginal bacteria from a Czech model, allowing men to have their dream woman in one bottle that demonstrates the "essence of her femininity." Yes, we are also extremely skeptical. And grossed out.

The word “yoni” means “vagina” in Sanskrit and serves as the product’s label on the beer bottle and other merchandising items. However, the beer isn’t on sale yet for purchase, as the company needs a LOT more funding on Indiegogo in order to distribute the beer. So far they've raised 821 euros, meaning they're less than 1 percent funded.

So, it's more than a little upsetting that there are people who would pay money to drink the vaginal bacteria of a model they've never met. But hey, the more you know!

Woman Who Confronted a White Man Regarding his Dreadlocks is Not Employee of California School

A woman was recently recorded at San Francisco State University fighting with a man, angered by his dreadlocks because he was caucasian. The video, posted below, shows the woman angrily confronting the man, saying that his hair was from her culture, and not his. He replies to this by telling her that dreadlocks were also worn in Egypt, and says, "Are you Egyptian? Nah."

She continued to harass the man, pulling at him as he tries to leave, and telling him, "You put your hands on me, you’re going to learn.” It's at this point that the woman notices the person filming the entire situation, and tells them to stop.

The video, when originally posted, stated in the title that the woman was an employee of San Fransisco State University, according to The Huffington Post. This, evidently, caused some controversy. This past Tuesday, the university made a public announcement stating that the woman is in fact not an employee of the school.

The man, apparently Cory Goldstein, has responded in a video interview. He says that he doesn't think his dreadlocks are cultural appropriation because dreadlocks are "universal" and that his hairstyle comes from a place of "love and respect."

What do you think, collegiettes? According to the university, no one pressed charges, but should something have been done? Who is in the wrong? Let us know!

Snapchat Has Released Its Greatest Update Yet

You might have forgotten, but Snapchat, along with its photo sharing capabilities, also has a 'chat' feature within the app. For most people, it goes unnoticed, but Snapchat has made a few changes in their recent update to stop its users from only swiping open a text conversation accidentally.

The best improvement made in this new update has to be the stickers. Now, you can send a sticker of an trendy avocado or a squad of cool cats to your BFF. What's better than that? (Hint: nothing.) The list of possibilities is long, so Snapchat even added a keyboard to search keywords for the many stickers you have to choose from!

Along with loads of fun stickers to spice up your snaps, there are also new video and audio call features! These work much like FaceTime and Skype, but they're now convieniently in an app you're already using to send all your selfies and hilarious home movies. Similarly, if you or your friend can't have a full on call at the moment, you can now send video or audio notes. Just hold down the video call button, and you can either record a (10 second long) video or audio blurb that your friend can check out later.

According to Refinery29, Snapchat spoke about the latest update recently, saying that their goal is to have an easy transition between texting, calling and video chatting, so it feels like you're talking in person. We think that that's a great way to view the future of social media. Do you agree, collegiettes? Check out the latest update and let us know if Snapchat is accomplishing their goal.

Happy snapping!

11 Things All Lesbians Are Sick of Hearing

$

To our lesbian collegiettes, we know you’ve heard all of these so many times that you can probably recite this list without even looking at it. Straight people can just be so totally fascinated with you because you’re like special, sparkly unicorns... except unicorns don’t have to answer dumb questions. Here are some of the questions you’ve probably been asked a million times.

1. Does that mean you’re attracted to me?

Being a lesbian doesn’t mean that we’re attracted to every single girl on earth. So, no. Definitely not.

2. Have you ever tried dating a guy?

Have you ever tried dating a girl?

3. So, who’s the guy in your relationship?

Uh… neither of us? Because we’re both girls?

4. I wish I was a lesbian. Dating would be so much easier.

Let’s do some simple math: We have two girls. That means two times the overthinking, stressing and, of course, PMS (which usually happens at the same time when your cycles sync up). Still wish you were a lesbian? Didn’t think so.

5. But you don’t LOOK like a lesbian.

Sorry I left the rainbow flag at home. Will the abundance of Tegan and Sara in my iTunes library do it?

6. You’re too pretty to be a lesbian!

Not only are you inferring that there aren’t any ~*pretty*~ lesbians, but you’re also invalidating my identity. Two points from Gryffindor.

7. Do you just hate men?

If hate means lack of attraction to penises, then sure.

8. My best friend’s roommate/lab partner/sister/etc. is a lesbian, too; do you know her?

The LGBTQ+ community on campus might be small, but it’s not that small. Come on.

9. How are you going to have kids?

Last time we checked, all you needed was a sperm and an egg in order to make a person. Sperm banks exist, so… yeah, we think we’re good.

10. How do you have sex?

We start it off with a bit of “No,” steam it up with a side of “It’s none of your business” and finish it off with a whole lot of “BYE, FELICIA!”

11. Can I watch?

So not only did you just reduce the intimacy between of two partners to objects of your fantasy porno, but you also had the audacity to actually ask this question out loud. K. Good day to you, sir.

1. Everything was always your fault.

2. Your parents gave you higher expectations.

3. You always had to be the good example.

4. Your parents always expected to bring your younger sister along everywhere you went.

5. And if you had friends over she never quit bugging you.

6. But when you actually wanted to hang out with her, she didn’t want to hang out with you.

7. She always want to copy your style.

8. You feel weird when she start to grow up, have crushes, go to parties and even worse...gets a boyfriend!

9. And you start to wish she was still that chubby baby mom brought home from the hospital.

10. Your younger sis is the prettier one.

11. She likes to borrow your stuff without asking.

12. You think your parents totally let her get away with way more than you ever did.

13. She always got stuff way earlier than you like a cell phone.

17 Times Watching 'Friends' Feels Better Than Having Real Friends

In case you've been living under a rock, all 10 seasons of Friends are on Netflix now. Sure, having human contact is nice and necessary or whatever, but sometimes you just need to live vicariously through Ross, Rachel, Monica, Joey, Phoebe and Chandler. There are so many fabulous moments in this series: moments that make you laugh and even cry at times, and these are the moments that have you clicking "Yes" when Netflix asks, "Are you still watching?"

1. The second the opening credits start and you get to sing along with the theme song.

Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA. What a coincidence!

2. When Ross articulates himself in the only way he knows how.

Who can forget the “vulva” dirty-talk incident?

3. Anytime Phoebe sings her heart out about... well, anything.

Her mom and dad. Her grandmother. Who could forget Smelly Cat? No one. Because it is iconic.

4. And Joey turns on the charm with his signature line.

Hearts melt everywhere when we hear those three little words.

5. When Monica’s over-competitiveness touches you on a real level.

You don’t want to admit it, but you really relate.

6. When Chandler is a representative for those of us who are “hopeless and awkward and desperate for love.”

No, really. Chanandler Bong is the everywoman.

7. Whenever Janice shows up and you just wait for the infamous,

It’s Chandler Bing!

8. One word: Flashbacks.

They always added a little something extra to the episode.

9. Two more words: Celebrity cameos.

Team Jen for the rest of our lives.

10. When Ross and Rachel fight and you personally feel the emotional strain on their relationship.

Because it always gives you something to really root for.

11. But then they get back together because they are meant to be.

And there is nothing better than seeing the two characters you’ve been rooting for finally end up happy.

12. And you see beautiful moments like this one.

*~*happy tears*~*

13. Oh, and this one.

Too many happy moments to choose from.

14. When the comedy is spot-on.

Which was always.

15. Any time the guys show us what a true bromance is.

It doesn’t get any better than this.

16. Or when the ladies show us what it means to be true besties for the resties.

The three best friends that anybody could have.

17. But mostly, when the whole group reminds us just how important it is to be surrounded by people you love.

On Netflix, but really in the real world, too.

7 Words That’ll Take Your Resume to the Next Level

$
0
0

There’s nothing worse than sounding boring on a resume. Don’t get us wrong—it’s important to highlight your good qualities and say that you’re “passionate,” but tons of other collegiettes also claim to have that same quality. If you’re looking to replace some of the most overused words on your resume, look no further. We had experts Tom Dezell, author of Networking for the Novice, Nervous, or Naive Job Seeker, and Emily Miethner, president and founder of FindSpark, a career development community for young creatives, weigh in on what words to include on your resume to help you stand out from the crowd.

1. Influenced

You’ve probably put words like “passionate,” “hard-working,” or “driven” on your resume—but these qualities, Dezell says, are ones any employee should have—so putting them on your resume is just a waste of space. Instead, he suggests, “Try using words that really reflect the actions on your resume. For example, ‘Influenced previously inactive students to participate in campus-wide drive, leading to record turnout’ is a great way to show your effort.” A word such as “influence” is a more powerful term that shows that you take action in a professional work environment.

2. Created

Everyone uses the term “creativity” on his or her resume, so try to change it up a bit. Instead of just referring to creativity as a skill, use the term “created” as a verb to describe specific examples of how you are creative. “An example of how to use this word effectively would be, ‘Created the first ever website for the company,’” says Dezell. Next time you are referring to previous job experience, don’t write “showed creativity,” but instead explain that you created something of value or importance.

3. Launched

There are many ways to express that you did something impressive enough to be on your resume, so don’t use boring verbs that a hiring professional has already read a hundred times. “Employers want to see results and the impact you made at each job,” says Miethner. “For example, ‘Launched Instagram profile and gained 2,000+ followers in three months’ sounds better than ‘Started Instagram account.’”

4. Improved

This is a great term to further explain that you have experience in making a positive impact. “Including the term ‘improve’ shows that you have the power to enhance something and make it better,” says Dezell. “You could say something like, ‘Improved sales by X percent in X months.’” Avoid using words like “developed” or “increased” and instead cut right to the word that really makes it a favorable quality.

5. Achieved

Everyone talks about “success” on their resume, so try throwing in a more exciting word. “‘Achieved’ is a great word to express what you have accomplished in the past,” says Dezell. “Try saying something along the lines of ‘Achieved Magna Cum Laude graduation status.’” Not only does “achieved” sound fancier than something like “received,” but it’s more professional, too. Remember: You’re allowed to brag on a resume!

6. Resolved

Problem-solving may be listed under your skills, but including the word “resolve” on your resume will really go deeper into how exactly you solved problems. “Use language that makes you sound proactive rather than passive,” says Dezell. “For example, you could say, ‘Resolved errors to balance company ledgers.’”

7. Managed

You don’t have to hold the job title of manager to use this word on a resume. Instead, think about it in terms of smaller tasks. “For example, ‘Managed 500+ attendee guest list at VIP client event’ better shows that you're able to work in a high pressure environment,” says Miethner.

What word is the most overused on resumes? “Never use the word ‘helped,’” says Miethner. “If you did something, you did it.” Another thing you can do to spice up your resume is including numbers. “I believe in the power of numbers,” says Miethner. “If you have a hard time talking about results, you can use numbers to provide context.”

Before your next big interview, double check that you’ve replaced some of the drab words on your resume with ones that pack a bigger punch. “Rather than simply describing yourself with qualities like ‘creative’ ‘strategic’ ‘excellent writing skills,’ use strong vocabulary to describe things you've done successfully that show you have those qualities,” Dezell says. After all, your resume is the first thing most employers look at, so why not make that great first impression by really showing off what you’re capable of?

Now You Can Relive Your Childhood & PowerPuff Yourself

If you haven't already heard, you can create yourself as a Powerpuff from the hit show Powerpuff Girls. There's no gender limitation on these creations, though, so you can really go wild! Give yourself a pet and colorful hair while you're at it.

Cartoon Network launched the website to promote the reboot of PowerPuff Girls (Monday 6 p.m. ET/PT). It's obviously working, since #PowerpuffYourself was trending on Twitter.

Of course, since the site's launch, it's been a hit for creating celebrity and fictional Powerpuffs. Who wouldn't want to see Beyonce or One Direction as a two-dimensional children's cartoon character?

Entertainment Weekly went ahead and Powerpuffed all the members of One Direction, with adequate apologies because the app doesn't have a hairstyle that accurately matches Harry Styles'.

This is sure to be everyone's latest excuse for not studying.

20 Insane Arguments Every Feminist Has Had With An Anti-Feminist

$

Every feminist has had to have these ridiculous conversations at some point...People, it's 2016. Get on board.

The “No, Not All Feminists Hate Men” Argument.

Feminism is fighting for both men and women’s rights.

The “Yes, The Patriarchy Exists and It’s Still Thriving” Argument.

Unfortunately the patriarchy is still alive and well.

The “No, I’m Not Just a Feminist Because Taylor Swift and Beyoncé Are” Argument.

Although it doesn’t hurt the cause.

The “Being a Feminist Does Not Mean You’re Just Angry” Argument.

The angry-feminist stereotype is absolutely ridiculous and inaccurate.

The “No, Feminism is Not Just a Trend (it’s Actually Been Around for a LONG Time)” Argument.

I’m not just a feminist because it’s trendy.

The “No, Cat-Calling Should Not Be Taken as Flattering” Argument.

If it makes me uncomfortable, then it’s not okay.

The “You Can Totally Be a Feminist and a Girly-Girl” Argument.

There’s nothing anti-feminist about enjoying shopping, makeup, and the color pink!

The “Feminism Isn’t About Making Excuses or Gaining Certain Privileges for Women” Argument.

It’s not just about trying to give women the upper hand.

The “Being a Feminist Does Not Mean You Belong to the LGBTQA Community” Argument.

They are two very distinct things.

The “No, Feminism is Not Reversed Sexism” Argument.

Again feminism is about equality of the genders, not asserting one as better than another.

The “Yes, The Wage Gap is a Very Real Thing” Argument.

And the sooner we all fight for feminism, the sooner the wage gap will disappear.

The “Not All Feminists Agree on or Fight For the Same Things” Argument.

There’s a wide range of beliefs within feminist theory.

The “Of Course Feminism Realizes Men Face Double Standards” Argument.

Women are not the only ones who suffer under the patriarchy.

The “No, I’m Sorry, but Women DO NOT Have Equal Rights As Of Yet” Argument.

There is so much more than just the right to vote.

The “A Woman Comfortable With Her Sexuality Does Not Make Her a Slut” Argument.

Women should be able to celebrate their bodies and express themselves how they want, without fear of society’s double standards.

The “You Can Be Both a Feminist and Stay-At-Home-Mom” Argument.

Feminism is about giving women the choice and opportunity to be whoever they want to be!

The “Yes, Feminism is Fighting For Both Men and Women’s Rights” Argument.

It even says it in the definition of “feminist”.

The “Free The Nipple is About More Then Not Wearing Uncomfortable Bras” Argument.

It’s about the fact that women are expected to wear something as uncomfortable as bras.

The “Yes, Men Can Also Be Feminists” Argument.

Feminism is in no way an all-girls movement.

The “Yes, We Still Need Feminism Even Though It’s 2016” Argument.

Feminism has accomplished a lot, but there’s still a lot of work to be done!

11 Moments of Stress Every Twenty-Something Experiences

$

Sometimes your inner-monologue sounds a lot like, "OH MY GOD, WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE???? I THINK I'M GOING TO JUST GIVE UP AND MOVE TO MEXICO AND PRETEND MY RESPONSIBILITIES DON'T EXIST." Just remember that you're not the only one out there whose brain is telling her that she should just give up. Also remember that you should never give up, because you're awesome.

1. The moment when you're looking for a post-college job and realize you’re incredibly unqualified.

Someone just needs to give you a damn job.

2. The moment that you realize that you have no idea what a 401K is.

You don’t really need one, right?

3. The moment you remember that you have to worry about figuring out your life on top of all of your work.

You just keep repeating your new mantra: “Stress is my friend. Stress is my friend. Stress is my—” *Bursts into tears*

4. The (many) moments you get asked, “So what’s next for you?”

Can we all agree to never ask this question of anyone ever again?

5. The moment you start to realize you can’t eat like you did as a freshman.

But pizza is bae...

6. And the moment that your doctor tells you that your caffeine intake is unhealthy.

“YOU DON’T KNOW MY LIFE!”

7. The moment you realize that you probably don’t have time to binge-watch House of Cards on Netflix, and that your time management is indeed a problem that you’ve created for yourself.

And... now you’re judging yourself. Awesome.

8. When you look at your bank account and see just how poor you are.

How are you going to pay for an apartment? A car? Nutella?!

9. When you promise yourself that your nap will only be 15 minutes... and wake up three hours later having gotten nothing done.

But... But... Why aren’t there more hours in the day?

10. When someone you like asks for a favor but you’re too stressed to even think about agreeing to help them.

*Hops away from responsibility*

11. The moment you take a step back and realize that none of these should be considered problems.

And then you feel guilty because all you really need to worry about is taking a breath and telling yourself that you can do this.

Because you can. #IGotThis

How She Got There: Nondini Naqui, President & CEO of Society of Grownups

$
0
0

Name: Nondini Naqui
Job Title and Description: President & CEO of Society of Grownups
College Name/Major: Anthropology and Spanish double major from Wellesley College; MBA from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in Sustainability and Marketing
Website:www.societyofgrownups.com
Twitter Handle:@societygrownups
Instagram Handle:@societyofgrownups

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

NN: There’s really no such thing as a typical day. Sometimes the roof is leaking and I’m up there trying to help fix it, and that same day might end in an all-staff meeting. Overall, I do spend a lot of time with the team thinking about the business and making sure we’re creating the best possible experience for our Grownups, which is extremely empowering. Although I’m really focused on the business strategy day-to-day, in true startup fashion, I pitch in wherever I’m needed. I have never felt bored.

What was the inspiration behind Society of Grownups?

NN: Society of Grownups is a learning initiative dedicated to fostering financial literacy and is a place where people can go to talk openly about money. One of the biggest things that inspired Society of Grownups is the fact that money is the last taboo. As a society, we actually don’t talk about money—for me, this is something that has persisted throughout my life, both personally and professionally.

When we started to develop this concept, we went out and talked to people in their 20s, 30s and 40s and realized that in a very short period of time, this group is experiencing a lot of major life changes and making financial decisions that have long-term life consequences. Things like getting married, having a child or buying a home. Ultimately, the core insight that inspired Society of Grownups was, “What if we focused on how to engage with people in those moments when they need us the most?”

Our aim is to open up the conversation around money and remove the taboo. It’s a need that I’ve experienced myself, and that I’ve seen among my own peer group and really our country as a whole. That’s what made me feel Society of Grownups was something that absolutely needed to happen.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

NN: We’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way as an organization. You are inevitably going to get some things wrong. We tested out classes that we thought Grownups would be interested in only to learn they didn’t resonate at all. But Society of Grownups is a learning initiative—it’s all about testing and iterating and continuing to learn from our mistakes so that we’re creating the best possible experience for our Grownups.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

NN: It’s been exciting to see the concept of Society of Grownups come to life. You have a vision and a dream for what something is going to be, and then when people actually come in the doors and you see the concept resonating…that is the most surreal moment. The fact that we’ve had a real impact on Grownups’ lives is one the most gratifying parts of everything we’ve done so far.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

NN: There’s a quote by the Dalai Lama that I look at pretty regularly. It says, “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.” It’s extremely powerful.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

NN: When I was 20, I wish someone had said to me, “You feel overwhelmed right now and you’re not sure where you’re going, but have the confidence that you’ll be able to figure it all out.” My advice would be to not be afraid to take chances or step off the path. You have to get more comfortable with experimenting and putting out a hypothesis, and you have to be willing to fail.

10 Times Kanye Actually Made Sense on Twitter

Kanye West has some of the greatest tweets of ALL TIME! Okay, maybe all time would be an exaggeration—but he's had some great tweets over the years. Sure, we all love reading his ridiculous rants, but sometimes he actually has a point. If you put aside his controversial tweets that made you go "WTF??!," you'll realize that he does make sense at times.

Like that time he spoke the absolute TRUTH about how expensvie college textbooks are.

And let's be honest, there ARE some fonts that we simply love more than others.

Admit it, there are some days when you just want an elevator to yourself.

This might not be the most interesting tweet out there, but it IS technically accurate.

We've been wondering the same thing since The Devil Wears Prada came out, TBH.

We all talk about how cool ninjas are, but how many of us have actually seen one IRL?

And this is exactly why clean utensils should be used for ALL meals:

This is basically you, whenever a brilliant idea in your head is lost because someone interrupted you:

When you're having a great hair and makeup day, but there's no one around to snap a photo:

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons we learned from Kanye:

Preach, Kanye.

Like other corporate women, you work a 9-to-5 job but want something more. Whether you have an undeclared passion, an interest that you’ve always wanted to get more involved in, or just need some extra cash, you should consider starting a side hustle to compliment your career.

It might seem like a lot of time spent working, but we spoke with Ryan Robinson, an entrepreneur and writer who teaches people how to create meaningful self-employed careers, to discover how a side hustle can actually benefit your career.

1. You can (safely) test out your business idea

You might have a killer idea for a new app and are considering sending in your two weeks’ notice at your current job in order to develop your product full-time.

But twenty-five percent of new businesses fail within the first year. You’re still paying off student loans, so why quit your job, stop earning income, and deplete your bank account when statistics say that your business has a greater chance of failure than success?

“For those who want to become entrepreneurs, starting with a side business gives you the opportunity to test your idea, build momentum, keep getting feedback on your concept, and work it into a profitable business model—all while keeping your day job (and source of reliable income),” Robinson says.

Robinson would know. His first product—the iStash—sold over 6,000 units in just under four months. A strong start, for sure, but he ended up $6,537 in debt. Even promising start-ups can end up costing you more than they may be worth.

You can and should pursue your passion project, but you shouldn’t completely write off the safety net that an earned income provides.

“While it'll certainly take more time to get traction, starting as a side project gives you the lowest-risk opportunity to test the validity of your business idea, without getting into debt or blowing through all of your savings,” he says.

2. You can build relationships that could lead to new opportunities

Yes, we’re talking networking.

“If nothing else, having a side business that you're actively getting feedback on will force you to regularly reach out and forge new relationships with others in your industry,” Robinson says. “What starts as a guest post, or one-off writing contract, could very easily lead to full-time employment offers. What's even more important, is that you'll be carrying all of your relationships with you into the future.”

When you’re stuck in an office all day, most of the people you see are your co-workers. When you have a side hustle, you’re constantly meeting new people. As you’ll discover, one contact will turn into two, two will turn into three—before you know it, you’ve formed a figurative Rolodex of contacts to take with you throughout your career.

Though the people you meet or the opportunities you pursue may not seem like a big deal at first, every small action will pay off in the long run.

"I started freelance writing and blogging on the side (including at Her Campus) which directly related to my job search," says Kayla Lewkowicz, who currently works at a startup. "Employers were really impressed at my website, blog content, and clips and it made a huge difference getting my foot in the door! The biggest lesson I learned while side hustling is (since I'm still doing it) that a little goes a long way. The efforts I put into [it] were minor from a time perspective but major in payoff; a little writing and networking and editing each day."

3. You can learn new skills

Your day job might be in human resources, but when you have a side hustle, you’ll be the CEO, marketing team, product and development department and sales crew, all in one.

“From learning how to be ruthless with your time and opportunity management since you have such a limited amount of free time to work on your side business, to picking up industry-specific skills like coding, writing, or graphic design, you're constantly investing in yourself by having a side project,” Robinson says.

For example, designing your own website, even if you absolutely hating coding, will help you become a more skilled and well-rounded person.

“There's no wrong move when you're building your own skills and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone,” he says.

Alaina Leary is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Publishing/Writing at Emerson College, and started doing freelance work as an undergraduate student.

"I did a co-op as a junior in college with a marketing and communications agency and I fell in love with working there," she says. "My supervisor hired me on a as a team member, which in this case, meant working freelance (mostly remote, with some in-office meetings) while I was still in school. I loved it. My supervisor gave me the opportunity to write press releases, blog posts, PowerPoint presentations, website content, and to design graphics and videos for her and her clients and get paid doing it."

Since then, Alaina has continued her freelance writing gigs, even while holding down another full-time job. Though she admits that she "kind of fell into" her side hustle, Alaina credits her freelance work as not just providing an additional source of income but helping her build her resume for the gigs that she really wants.

"I still always recommend picking up a side hustle even if it is for the money or the resume line, especially if you're in a competitive career or you're looking to switch careers or gain more experience in an area you don't have it," she says. "A side hustle can be incredible for personal development. Maybe the first full-time job you landed out of college was as a waitress or a bartender and that's not what you want to do forever—that's okay! A side hustle designing graphics for a small company can get you valuable experience as a graphic designer, for example, if that's your end goal. Let your side hustle become a source of professional development for your career and the extra time and effort will seem worthwhile."

4. You can discover your purpose

“As an entrepreneur, when the journey gets difficult (and it definitely will), when you're making painful sacrifices, the one thing you will always need to fall back upon is your 'why',” Robinson says.

Often, your side hustle can help you find your “why”—the thing that you’re passionate about and will sacrifice nearly everything for (including precious commodities like time, money, and sleep) in order to do it.

“Without having a greater purpose—something that's more important than just your own personal wealth or reputation—you're going to have a very difficult time sticking through the challenges,” he says.

We aren’t going to lie to you—keeping up with a side hustle is a lot of work. There will be long days and long nights, but the pay-off is worth it. Operating a side hustle can advance your current and even future career by helping you launch an idea to a business, meet valuable people in your industry, learn new skills, and become the person that you want to be.

We love to hate Mean Girls’ Regina George. We love to hate presidential candidate Donald Trump. The only difference is that Regina George is a fictional character, so it doesn’t really matter what we think of her, at the end of the day. But Trump is a real person, and has a real chance of being America’s next president, which is a thought that keeps some of the voting public up at night.

Trump is a real-life mean girl. The Regina George of the candidates. If some of his statements inspired by debates don’t already prove that…

...then, this video made by Nylon might.

Really, though, this shouldn’t come as a shock. Since the beginning of his campaign, Trump has been playing dirty. Now that he has been exposed as a mean girl, it all makes sense.

9 Hacks for a Healthier Week

With the business of a new semester, it’s easy to overlook all of the different aspects of your well-being, such as your physical, mental and sexual health. However, doing so can be detrimental to your body and end up making life even more stressful than it already is. Don’t worry, though! We have a few easy hacks to make your week a whole lot healthier.

1. Walk to class every day

Walking to class is an easy way to squeeze in some exercise. Dr. Roy Stefanik, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says you should always choose to walk if time, weather and safety permit. “Biking to classes is another option if your campus is bike-friendly,” Dr. Stefanik says.

Choosing to walk could be more beneficial than you think. According to registered nurse Coleen Koralek, walking a mere 20 extra minutes per day on average will burn seven pounds of body fat per year. Additionally, on average, every minute of walking can extend your life by one and a half to two minutes!

“Just make sure you are dressed correctly, and your backpack is fitted correctly and not too heavy!” Dr. Stefanik says. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends that the weight of a backpack should be less than 10 to 15 percent of a person’s body weight. If your backpack is heavier than that, it may injure your muscles and joints and eventually lead to severe back, neck and shoulder pain.

2. Choose your caffeine vice

Although caffeine can serve as a perfect pick-me-up, whether it’s soda, coffee or tea, it’s easy to abuse. Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at California State University, says that excess caffeine can lead to side effects like jitteriness, racing heartbeat, nervousness and insomnia.

So how much is too much? According to the Food and Drug Administration, 600 mg (four to seven cups of coffee) of caffeine or more each day is too much. While this sounds like a lot, when you factor in other caffeinated beverages and even things like chocolate, the total adds up fast. To remain healthy and keep your caffeine fix, make a choice! Koralek says that coffee, soda and tea alone are fine, but you shouldn’t be combining these and other sources of caffeine throughout the day.

As long as you stick to one source, caffeine actually has a multitude of health benefits, like stimulating hair growth and preventing type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. A study done by the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research showed that caffeine also boosts memory consolidation.

3. Carry around a reusable water bottle

The health benefits of drinking water are more than enough reason to up your H2O levels. Some of the many advantages of drinking enough water include mood improvement, prevention of some types of cancer, increased energy, protected joints and cartilage, improved heart health, improved kidney function and more. “Water is always going to be the gold standard – clear, clean and good for you and your body,” Dr. Durvasula says.

Koralek says the adequate daily intake of water for women is about nine cups, debunking what you’ve probably heard about drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. The easiest way to fulfill this recommended amount is to buy a reusable water bottle. For water bottles on the smaller side, to fill it seven to eight times a day, and for larger ones, four to five times.

4. Always have condoms with you

Sex is a healthy part of our lives, so make sure you keep it that way! Contraception is essential for both preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Condoms can do both of these—and the best part is that they’re portable! You should always keep condoms with you, whether in your purse, car, etc., since you never want to be in a situation where you need one but don’t have one.

“Some women may be apprehensive when it comes to keeping condoms on them, whether it’s because they don’t want others to find out and judge them or because they’re simply embarrassed,” Koralek says. However, she encourages us to stray away from this stigma. The possible embarrassment or shame is not worth obtaining an STI or an unwanted pregnancy.

5. Volunteer at least once a week

Melanie Ludwig, owner of Prestige Fitness in Manchester, New Hampshire, and an adjunct faculty member in the exercise science department at Manchester Community College, says that mental health may be the area of health college students ignore the most.

One of the best things you can do to improve this ignored aspect of your health is volunteer! Koralek says that volunteerism is guaranteed to make you feel good. Additionally, a study done by UnitedHealth Group showed that volunteering is linked to not only better mental health, but better physical health as well.

There is a wide variety of causes to choose from. To find specific organizations, you can visit Volunteer.gov for opportunities in your area, or you can talk to student services at your school to find opportunities on campus.

6. Take an exercise class for credit

If you can fit it into your schedule, take a workout class! Most colleges have a variety of options, such as Pilates, yoga, spinning and more. Dr. Durvasula says that these classes are a great option that will force you to exercise and get active!

Typically, these classes range from 50 to 90 minutes long. The American Heart Association recommends you do 30 minutes of exercise a day, five times a week. Whether the class you sign up for meets daily or it meets two or three times a week, work that time in with additional exercise to get the recommended amount!

7. Don’t drink more than seven alcoholic drinks per week

With the amount of drinking that happens on so many college campuses, you should be extra careful about how alcohol affects your health.

“Women don’t metabolize alcohol the same as men, so [you] have to be more careful,” Dr. Stefanik says. This difference is due to women weighing less than men on average and due to all of the empty calories found in most alcoholic beverages, whether it be beer, wine or distilled spirits.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines a standard drink as roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol, which is found in 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits. Keeping this in mind, the NIAAA also says that a woman shouldn’t drink any more than seven drinks per week, and no more than three drinks on a single day.

8. Wash your hands

While this may seem silly to even point out, washing your hands frequently is SO important! When you think about it, we’re constantly using items that others have previously used, like desks and a multitude of other things around campus. We’re also always in close contact with others, especially roommates. Koralek says that simply washing your hands can prevent a large number of illnesses. You can also purchase a mini hand sanitizer bottle and keep it with you—while still making an effort to wash your hands regularly, of course!

9. Pleasure yourself at least once a week

As women, we shouldn’t be afraid of our own bodies. “For most women, masturbation and self-touch are a healthy and normal part of sexual health,” Durvasula says. As long as you’re comfortable with the idea of masturbation, there are actually many health benefits to pleasuring yourself. For example, Koralek says that it can relieve tension and stress and even help you sleep.

In addition to the benefits, sexual health educator Dr. Rachel Born says that masturbation is essential for gaining awareness about your body and its abilities.

“If you have a roommate, you can always masturbate in the shower with a waterproof vibrator,” she says. However, “If you’ve never masturbated, read/watch whatever turns you on first, then feel around for your pleasure spots,” she says.

No matter what you do, it’s important to remember that your sexual health is just as important as your physical and mental health!

At the end of the day, no matter how busy you are, it’s important to prioritize your health. Dr. Stefanik says that prevention is the best medicine, and he’s absolutely right! Taking care of your body mentally and physically is the best way to feel good all around.
