The Beauty Tool You Should Be Cleaning Regularly

$
0
0

Beauty experts often stress how important it is to keep makeup brushes clean—and rarely discuss how important it is to keep other tools clean, too. In this case, we’ll tell you just how often you should be cleaning your nail clippers.

Step back, take a second and guess how often they need to be cleaned. Surprisingly enough, you should be washing them before every use, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You might not be thinking about it when you're prepping your nails for a mani, but throughout the day, there's a lot of stuff that collects in your fingernails—germs, dirt, bacteria... you get the idea. And when you're not disinfecting those clippers, all that gunk just... stays there, leaving the potential to cause major infection. Ew.

Fortunately, cleaning them doesn't take long. For a deep clean, soak them in a bowl of boiling hot, soapy water for two minutes. Rinse, and then wipe them down using a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. In between washes—after each use—wipe them down with rubbing alcohol. In all cases, make sure to dry them off with a paper towel so your nail clippers don't rust!

5 Little Ways to Show You’re Into Him

$

0

Imagine this: You meet a cute guy. After talking to him and getting to know him, you realize how much you really like him. How do you make him aware of your feelings without coming out and saying, “I like you”? Dropping hints could be the best way of showing how you feel before you consider asking him out.

You want to set yourself apart from the rest of his girl friends and make sure you don’t fall quickly into the friend zone when hanging out. Show him how you feel with these easy ideas!

1. Send a “good luck” text

We all know how stressful a huge exam can be and how sweet it is to have someone wish you good luck. A good way to get you on his mind early on is shooting him a “Good luck today!” text before a test. It’s a small but effective way of showing you care about him.

“The easiest way I can let a guy know I’m thinking about him is showing that I care about the small stuff,” says Christina Lin, a junior at Providence College. “Even if we don’t text throughout the day, letting him know he’s on my mind in such a subtle way is always a good idea.”

A bonus to texting him is that it sets up opportunity later on for him to text you about how the exam went. It may seem like a small step, but it’s significant enough to slowly get you closer to him.

2. Deliver his favorite coffee order to the library

If at some point in a conversation he told you he’s posting up in the library and getting to work, take advantage of this opportunity to further show you care.

In your conversation, text him and ask if he needs some fuel for studying. Take a pit stop at the coffee place on campus and grab both of you something to drink. Drop by the library and tell him you wanted to drop it off before he got to studying all day so you could see him and say, “Hi!”

3. Invite him on a double date

If you’re too nervous to ask him on a one-on-one date, use your roommate and her SO as a good excuse to go out. Tell him they want to see that new movie that just came out and they invited you along. You didn’t want to go alone and thought he’d be perfect company to ease the third-wheel pain.

Something casual like an on-campus date or movie is the perfect time to show him you like him. While your roomie and her SO are snuggling in the theater, it gives you two time to be alone without the pressure or nerves of a one-on-one date.

4. Show him your favorite show

Show him your favorite things so you can get to know each other better. Invite him over to watch the first episode of your favorite series with you.

Let him know that because he liked The Walking Dead so much, he’d probably like American Horror Story, too. Combining your interests helps you two bond over something new you can talk about.

5. Send him a Spotify playlist

There was nothing cuter than making mix CDs for the guy you liked back in high school. Considering not many people do that anymore, a Spotify playlist of songs you think he’d like is the mix CD of 2015!

“I had a major crush on this music buff guy, and we always talked about [what music] we were loving at the moment,” says Shannon Mooney, a junior at the University of New Hampshire. “I told him to listen to my new favorite band and made him a playlist of their album and some other songs like it.”

Assuming you have known him for a while now, you’ve probably talked about your favorite music before. Not only that, but Spotify lets you see what your friends are listening to, so it’ll give you an even better reason to let him know the playlist is something you think he’d be interested in.

It might be hard to figure out if he’s flirting with you, so making a move to show him you’re into him is the way to go. Use these little ways to show that special guy you like him without putting too much pressure on yourself!

6 Things We Hope Caitlyn Jenner's Upcoming 20/20 Interview Will Address

$

There's no denying that there has been a heavy amount of controversy following Caitlyn Jenner lately, between her being awarded Woman of the Year by Glamour and her "man in a dress" comment in an interview with TIME. Sometime in 2016, she'll be interviewed by 20/20's Diane Sawyer for the second time since coming out as transgender, and these are the 8 things we hope the interview will address.

1. Why don't you want to be a spokesperson for the trans community?

In Cait's TIME interview, she said, "And I am not a spokesperson for the trans community, I am not. The media kind of projects me as being the spokesperson, but from my standpoint, I am not. I am a spokesperson for my story and that’s all I can tell."

We get that—nobody wants to feel like they have to be the authority on the marginalized group they belong to. But we're still wondering why Caitlyn might not want to step up to the plate and use her celebrity status to make the public aware of the multitude of issues faced by the transgender community, including increased violence against trans women of color, lack of access to medical needs for lower-income trans people, and employment discrimination

Caitlyn also said during her interview with TIME, "I want to make a positive impact on this community and on the world, open up this conversation [about the transgender community]."

We agree, and we'd love to see what Caitlyn has to say about using her platform to speak out about these issues. She certainly holds enough media power to get these very real and devastating problems in front of a wide audience.

2. What did you mean by your "man in a dress" comment?

The transgender community and allies spoke out against Caitlyn immediately after her TIME interview was released.

Caitlyn said, "I think it’s much easier for a trans woman or a trans man who authentically kind of looks and plays the role. So what I call my presentation. I try to take that seriously. I think it puts people at ease. If you’re out there and, to be honest with you, if you look like a man in a dress, it makes people uncomfortable."

Quite a few transgender activists were put off by this comment, because it reinforces an idea that trans people have had forced on them for years—that they have to "pass" in order to be accepted by society. It's problematic even for non-transgender people, as well, because many people who don't identify as trans are also presenting their gender in a very non-binary, androgynous way.

We're hoping Cait will address it, because although she issued an apology, it would be great to hear her talk about transphobia, and how transphobia shapes the way transgender people live their lives. Again, she could use her platform to address the issues that transphobia and the strict gender binary cause, both for the trans community and beyond.

3. What do you hope to learn about trans issues this year?

As humans, we're all works in progress, and no matter our identities and the communities we belong to, we can always learn more about what it means to be accepting and inclusive. Caitlyn has said several times that she hopes to "learn more and more."

We'd like to hear what kinds of stories she hasn't heard yet, and what issues she'd like to know more about. Does she want to delve more deeply into the intersections between mental health and transphobia? Does she want to meet transgender people who are homeless or struggling to find employment? Is she interested in transgender sex workers and the struggles they face? Does she want to learn about sex positivity and body confidence in the trans community?

Like Cait has said herself, "There are a lot of ways of being trans," and we're as interested in those diverse experiences as she is.

4. How can the media better address privilege in the trans community?

Caitlyn talked about privilege in her TIME interview, admitting that she benefits from white privilege along with the privilege of having a higher income and celebrity status.

Cait said, "Because of my position in life, maybe I can make a bigger and faster change of thinking in the world than someone who doesn’t have a platform."

That's exactly what we want to hear. We hope the interview will address Cait's privilege, and give her time and space to talk about transgender community members who may not benefit from the same privilege. Because she has such a wide-reaching platform, there's a real opportunity to shed media light on the issues faced by other trans people who aren't benefiting from socioeconomic or white privilege.

We'd love to know what Cait wants to do about that, and what she hopes the media in general will do to cover these topics more often.

5. What can society do to dismantle transphobia and binary gender expectations?

We all know that Caitlyn's comments about passing come from a place of societal transphobia, and she acknowledged this in her apology letter. Given that, we'd love to hear Caitlyn's thoughts about we as a society can do to dismantle problematic ideals about the gender binary that reinforce transphobia—like the idea that women have to wear dresses, while men can't.

When Caitlyn came out, an unfortunate number of media outlets focused on her appearance and her ability to "pass," rather than on her courage or the nuances of coming out as transgender. In this interview, she has the perfect opportunity to address how sexist and transphobic it was for the media to focus on her physical appearance.

With her platform, Cait could suggest something like a widespread change to using gender-neutral pronouns, dismantling gender stereotypes at a young age, moving to gender-neutral bathrooms, and her voice would be heard. Granted, there would be those who disagree, but we're anxious to hear what Caitlyn thinks.

6. Does she support same-sex marriage?

There was quite a controversy when Caitlyn seemed to imply that she didn't support same-sex marriage, especially from members of the LGBTQ+ community who support transgender rights, such as Ellen DeGeneres. Cait has since clarified what she meant in that situation, too, but it would be interesting to see Diane Sawyer and Caitlyn dive deeper into the issue.

Does Cait support same-sex marriage now because her eyes were opened to a wider variety of struggles after she came out? Has she changed her mind on any other social issues? Has coming out as transgender made her more liberal, or have her political views stayed pretty much the same?

It's definitely a topic we'd be really curious to hear her thoughts on, especially as she becomes more aware of a diverse range of transgender experiences.

No matter what the 20/20 issue covers, there's one fact that is certain: instead of turning the blame to Caitlyn for any misguided comments, we should think about the systemic societal issues that these comments are coming from. That's not to say we can't hold her accountable for problematic comments she makes, but once she apologizes and finds a place of understanding, we need to turn our attention to the place those comments came from: transphobia.

Instead of placing the blame entirely on Caitlyn, we need to refocus and think about how we can dismantle discrimination and systemic oppression. Those are the real enemies here, not a woman of celebrity status who is just learning what it means to be a part of the trans community.

The Aftermath of the Miss Universe 2015 Announcement

Last night, nearly five million viewers witnessed one of the most uncomfortable moments in television history. You didn't have to be in Las Vegas to feel the awkward vibe that radiated throughout the room when Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant. Imagine having the world in your hands and then getting crushed by a giant meteor; this might be a less harsh way to describe how Miss Colombia felt as the crown got ripped off of her head and placed onto the head of the true winner, Miss Philippines. For those of you who didn't get to experience this painful moment, here's a little recap:

You may be wondering what went down behind the scenes after this incident and how everybody involved handled it. No, there were no cat fights. In fact, both Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines handled the situation with grace. In a backstage interview after the crowning, Miss Colombia stated that everything happens for a reason and she expressed how thankful she is for all of the support.

Miss Philippines remained humble throughout the situation and proceeded by joking that the occurrence was "so 2015" (maybe hinting at how dramatic our society is nowadays).

Steve Harvey has also apologized again for the mix up via Twitter (and yes, there were some spelling errors). In his defense, humans make mistakes. Even if it be unintentionally humiliating someone in front of the entire world... let's see how long it takes him to live this down. No pressure, Steve.

Since the incident, many humorous pictures have gone viral via sites such as Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook. Because what better way to escape an uncomfortable situation than to laugh it off?

The texting game has officially changed forever. Kimoji is launching today, and this new iPhone keyboard provides you with Kim K’s butt, her infamous ugly crying face, a middle finger, and there’s even a contouring emoji—could this get any better? We can finally have emojis that will perfectly explain everyday life struggles in a nutshell. Did you drop all of your groceries on the floor? Did you fail your test you pulled an all-nighter for? Is your bank account at $0 for the third time this month? Kim K ugly crying face. It’s absolutely perfect.

The new line of Emoji’s was created in her image, and she hasn’t revealed too much about the app other than what we’ve seen on her Instagram account, but we know what she has in store will not leave us disappointed. She did, however, mention that none of her family members will be appearing in the app during a July interview with Rolling Stone. “I don't want any family members in it," Kardashian said. "They'll all want a piece.""But I love a waist trainer, and a Kylie lip.”

Maybe somewhere along the line, we will see a little baby North or Saint, or maybe even a Yeezus Kimoji… but, we can only hope.

So, collegiettes, which Kimoji will be on your frequently used list?

Freed Gang-Rapist Causes Controversy in India

The youngest of six gang rapists in India was just released from prison after serving his three year sentence, according to Al Jazeera. Since he was not yet 18 at the time of the attack, the maximum sentence is three years.

The rape happened in 2012 on a moving Delhi bus. Six men assaulted a 23-year-old physiotherapy student and her male friend. Four of the rapists received death sentences (that have not yet been carried out), and the fifth committed suicide in prison.

The female victim died of injuries 13 days after the brutal attack. The crime caused outrage in India and around the globe.

The Delhi Commission for Women filed a petition against the release of the man, but the Delhi High Court rejected the plea to extend his term. The Supreme Court will hear the petition Monday.

The victim’s mother, Asha Singh, is unhappy with the court’s decision. "Crime has won. We have lost. Our efforts for three years have failed," she said.

Hundreds of people crowded the streets of Delhi on Sunday to protest the release of the man.

"He has been moved to an undisclosed location, where he will be observed," Delhi state government spokesman Nagendar Sharma told CNN. "But technically, he is no longer in custody."

On Wednesday, Asha Singh publicly named her daughter, Jyoti Singh, at the third anniversary commemoration. By law, rape victims are not publicly named in India. Joyti’s mother wanted to end the stigma that the victims of sexual assault face in India. This is not the first time India has made global headlines for such brutal attacks.

We can only hope that the convict serves justice and Jyoti’s family can find peace.

7 Collegiettes on Their Most Confidence-Boosting Clothes

We all have that one special, go-to piece in our closets that we constantly gravitate towards—you know the one—every time you slip it on, it just feels right. While we love a great trendy piece, the best clothes have the power to make us not only look amazing, but feel amazing too. We got the inside scoop from collegiettes on the pieces and outfits that make them feel like conquering the world—here’s what they had to say.

1. Cute to Boot

Mega-babe Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” Rachel Petty, a junior at James Madison University, would definitely agree. “Wearing my booties always makes me feel confident and empowered!” Rachel says. “If I'm looking to take an outfit to the next level, they're always my go-to!”

We’re thinking Marilyn was totally onto something. If super chic ankle boots don’t do it for you, a pair of killer heels or fab flats totally will—oh, and great shoes look amazing on every body type, shape and size.

2. Blast From the Past

Sometimes it’s not the clothes themselves that are special, but the memories of when we felt beautiful wearing them that make them special. For Helmi Henkin, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, her senior prom dress will always have a special place in her closet.

“My favorite outfit is my senior prom dress,” Helmi says. “Senior prom was the most beautiful I have ever felt— getting to wear that gown with my hair and makeup done so elegantly. Sometimes when I am feeling down, all it takes is putting my senior prom dress back on and I am filled with happiness and confidence like I felt that night.”

Even the pieces you may only wear for one special night are still worth holding onto—you never know when you may feel like trying them on and taking a little trip down memory lane!

3. Skirts & Dresses

When in doubt, Donna Amore, a senior at The University of Scranton, likes to show off her killer legs as a confidence booster.

“Ever since I was little I've had a knack for only wearing dresses and skirts,” Donna says. “I’d happily choose either a dress or skirt over sweatpants any day. They never fail to make me feel furiously feminine and comfortable in my own body.”

Whether you’re petite, tall, or somewhere in between, showing a little (or a lot!) of leg via a cute skirt or dress will always look amazing—try the look with a pair of eye-catching tights this winter, and it will pack a punch.

4. Biker Jacket Babe

For Katie O’Hara, a sophomore at Ithaca College, her leather jacket completes every outfit. “I just throw on my leather jacket whenever I want to feel a little extra tough and edgy,” Katie says. “It’s how I make any outfit feel a little more ‘me,’ which instantly boosts my confidence!”

Whether it’s in the form of a jacket, pants or an accessory, there’s no denying that leather anything has the power to make even the girliest of dressers feel a little extra tough.

5. Bright Idea

While we love our neutrals and our all-black outfits, for Alexandra Hehlen, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina, there’s nothing like a pop of color to (literally!) brighten her day.

“I always go for the bright colors, the weird cuts or the fun embellishments because they make me feel unique and enhance my personality,” Alexandra says. “I've got a sunshine yellow leather bag from the Cambridge Satchel Company that I thrifted in New Orleans, and it comes EVERYWHERE with me!”

Not feeling full-on color? Take your cues from Alexandra and add a simple pop of a fun hue to your look—trust us, it will be an instant mood lifter. Get ready for the compliments!

6. Tried & True

For Madison Schreiber, a freshman at the Fashion Institute of Technology, tossing her favorite bomber jacket on is the key to feeling fab. “I have a black bomber jacket that I love to wear, as it adds an extra edge and sophistication to any look and looks like I spent much more time planning out my outfit, even if I just threw it on,” Madison says.

There’s a reason you gravitate to your favorite pair of jeans or jacket even when you’ve worn them three times already that week: they make you feel like you. The easiest way to feel good about yourself? Being yourself, of course. Having a favorite signature piece on hand is always the perfect way to stay true to your killer personal style.

7. #GirlBoss-ing It

Proof that professional clothing doesn’t have to be boring and stuffy: for Alexandra Blessing, a senior at Millersville University, looking like a boss lady makes her feel like a boss. “I love wearing fun professional clothing I buy from New York & Company,” Alexandra says. “I always feel so empowered when I wear them and I feel like I can take on anything and kick butt. I'm petite, so in order to make myself stand out I usually wipe on some red lipstick.”

Even if you’re not one for wearing a full suit and heels, simply adding a sharp, tailored blazer to your look can instantly make you feel put-together and ready to take on the world!

The bottom line: when it comes down to it, looking chic is all about feeling confident and fabulous in clothes you love. When you feel good, you’ll look good—no matter what you wear!

Everything You Need to Know About Bernie Sanders' Campaign

There have been several updates in the Bernie Sanders campaign, between his temporary issue with the DNC and his record-breaking campaign fundraising. Here's our update on everything you need to know about what's been going on with the Sanders campaign lately.

Sanders' Campaign Lost Access to Voter Files

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) cut off Sanders' campaign's access to the nationwide voter file, according to BuzzFeed News.

This happened as a result of a 30-minute technical error that allowed Sanders' campaign access to internal files for other Democratic candidates, including Hilary Clinton. Josh Uretsky, former national data director for the Sanders campaign, made copies of Clinton's files. Uretsky claimed he was doing so in an attempt to show the DNC exactly what type of files were able to be accessed during the technical glitch.

Uretsky was suspended after the data breach, along with two additional staff members, according to Fortune.

The DNC shut off access to the entire system for the Sanders' campaign.

Acceess to the voter database was restored by December 19, according to USA Today. The decision came right before a deadline for the lawsuit Sanders' campaign filed against the DNC, accusing them of trying to undermine his run. There was also massive backlash against the suspension from Sanders' supporters—250,000 signatures were gathered on a MoveOn campaign.

Yahoo! Politics reports that Sanders apologized to Clinton for accessing her campaign data during the Democratic debate Saturday, but ultimately placed the blame on whoever allowed the breach to happen in the first place.

Sanders Reached 2 Million Campaign Contributions

During the DNC controversy, the Sanders campaign made $1 in donations in a single day. The campaign has now reached over 2.3 million contributions as of December 20.

Sanders' campaign now holds the record for the most contributions for a White House bid, which was previously held by President Obama in 2011.

His campaign contributions overwhelmingly come from grassroots contributors, with the average contribution being below $25. TheStreet reports that about three quarters of the donations come from those who contributed less than $200 during the calendar year.

Tina Fey & Amy Poehler’s #Squad Offers More Than Just Band-Aids for Bullet Holes

Truth: T-Swift slayed the music video scene with "Bad Blood," featuring Hollywood’s hottest crew. From Selena Gomez to Gigi Hadid to Grey’s Anatomy’s very own Ellen Pompeo, Taylor proves her squad of starlets is locked, loaded and not one to mess with (but maybe one to become a part of instead).

But she’s not the only one who knows how to round up a band of fierce females. Besties Tina Fey and Amy Poehler brought new meaning to “squad” on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live to show that real friendships stick by you for more than just back stab and betrayal. A true squad isn’t one that offers Band-Aids for bullet holes, ladies—a true squad supports your daily grind. Mammogram technicians, nannies, and the soup lady who knows your order by heart—these are the people that really matter.

You either roll deep or roll out of Amy and Tina’s crew and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be joined by the screen’s favorites—Amy Schumer, Gayle King and Robert Downey Senior, who totally stand behind whatever hair color and black leather ensemble you choose to invest in.

Whether you need backup for boyfriend-stealing-blasphemy or someone to help show off your guns, these ladies prove it takes a village to make it all happen.

Are Men and Women Treated Differently On Campus? 10 College Women Weigh In

$
0
0

In 2015 do college students feel like there is a different between how men and women are treated? We asked 10 college women to weigh in to see if equality exists yet on campus.

“I don't think that men and women are treated differently by the faculty, but I do think that there is still an existing gap of respect and treatment between the two sexes. For example, next semester I am taking 19 credits of very advanced courses and also am involved in some extracurricular activities. Long story short, whenever I am to share my lifestyle and future goals with fellow students, I am told that I am 'very ambitious' or 'too tough on myself', when my male friends not doing half the stuff I do are told that their determination will get them far. Don't treat me differently because I am a female. I can do everything like you, I'm not a fragile flower.”

-Ana, Manhattanville College Class of 2019

“I go to a campus where I don't really see too much inequality among students, including among men and women. Maybe I'm just optimistic. I think this is because of the atmosphere of my campus.

-Jessica, Montclair State University Class of 2017

RELATED: Danny Castellano is Officially Too Anti-Feminist to Tolerate

“Our men's basketball team is treated like gods. People don't go to the women's games or really show a lot of support. The biggest gender gap on campus is definitely sport related.”

-Nancy, Gonzaga University Class of 2018

“This is a fairly broad question, but overall I believe that, yes, men and women are treated differently than one another. Whether consciously or unconsciously, men tend to take up more space than women — literally and figuratively. The men's hockey games are elevated to a campus wide event, gaining precedence over the women's hockey team, which is treated as an after thought. In classroom settings, both male students and professors often dominate the discussion by talking over women or dismissing them before they are finished. Walking through campus, I have received rather confused or dirty looks when I didn't immediately move aside for a man when there was plenty of space for both of us. I feel this phenomenon may be due in part to the fact that Oswego is set in a relatively conservative community. Thus administrators and faculty reinforce gender roles, which ultimately effect the way male and female students interact with one another.”

-Danielle, SUNY Oswego Class of 2016

“I don't think men and women are treated differently on campus. JMU is a very inclusive place, and I haven't found that professors or other students treat women any differently than men. Perhaps since JMU has slightly more females than males, we're able to hold our ground. Girl power!”

-Rachel, James Madison University Class of 2017

Besides the fact that many women I know, including myself, have been raped, sexually assaulted, and sexually harassed on more than one occasion, it is troubling to see the actions the school will take to hide this and to make sure the numbers are low. I cannot name one positive experience that I know someone has had with the school in regards to someone believing them and advocating for their rights as opposed to the assailant's rights.”

-Morgan, Northeastern University Class of 2018

“No, I don’t believe men and women are treated any differently, because this isn't the 1960s; men and women are equal. Liberals only push the 'waah women are oppressed' narrative to get votes.”

-Isabel, UCLA Class of 2016

“I work on campus and am usually pressured to work out in the front instead of in the back with the boys. I also have gotten rude comments about wearing sweatpants in public — boys wear sweatpants and don't get called out for it!”

I'm all for gender equality, but it has to be that: equality.”

“Men and women are definitely treated differently in college, for example in sororities and fraternities. Sororities are held to much higher standard of ethics than the fraternities. It’s ridiculous. I wish I could be a fraternity instead.”

14 Things 'Love Actually' Got Wrong About The Holidays

$

0

Oh, Hollywood and its picteresque holiday movies. Yes we all love 'Love Actually', but no, the holidays are never this simple! Check out what the movie got oh so wrong.

1. The notion that the holiday season is the ~perfect~ time to hit on your best friend's new wife

(That you barely know but have decided you're in love with).

2. ...In a really cute way, giving us totally unrealistic expectations of romance this holiday season

So when is a guy going to show up at my door with scripted cards and Silent Night playing on the boom box?

3. Speaking of love, how has this tiny kid figured it out?!

We are literally three times his age and are dating our cats.

4. And, like, how is he this sophisticated?

Teach us your ways, tiny one.

5. Although this was a pretty accurate sentiment, tbh

Basically.

6. And as always, Colin Firth understands us

Same, Colin.

7. But seriously, 'Love Actually,' harsh much?

At least it sounds better when you say "shag."

8. What kind of holiday messages of love are you even trying to send?

PSA: Not the best way to flirt ^^^^

9. But also can we just say that literally no airport is this jolly during the holiday season?!

...More like thousands of cranky people running around, missing their flights and trying to find their gate, all while running over your toes with their luggage.

10. But back to how everyone has a significant other come Christmas time...

Oh, Hollywood.

11. Like really? Everyone?

Is this a cinematic joke.

12. Realllllllly?

Are there any single people in this entire movie?!

13. Even the kid? LOL okay.

We'll be here crying under our Christmas tree.

14. Basically us during this whole movie:

'Love Actually' we love you, but you've got an unrealistic idea of the holidays!

5 Reasons You May Be Feeling Unsettled in Your Relationship

Being in a relationship comes with many challenges, and sometimes it’s hard to identify where some of those problems stem from. Everyone goes through ups and downs with their SO, but there could be something bigger making you feel uneasy about the status of your relationship. Before you make the decision whether or not to call it quits, consider these reasons you might be feeling unsettled.

1. You don’t see each other enough

Making time for one another is a big part of being in a relationship, but with school and work it can become just another thing you’re trying to balance. It's hard to have a strong relationship when you don't make sacrifices to see one another. “My fiancé and I have a tough time seeing each other even though we literally live 100 steps away from each other,” says Alexandra Blessing, a senior at Millersville University. “As super-involved seniors, we're lucky if we can get more than three hours together. It's very hard to cope with it, but we always reserve one day out of the week where we eat dinner together.” Don’t let a busy schedule ruin your relationship. Instead, plan out date nights that work for both of you.

2. You're having intimacy issues

Being intimate with your SO is a big part of being in a relationship, and it also seems to be one of the earliest signs of trouble when you're feeling unsettled. "My boyfriend and I were not sexually compatable," says Brittney Kane, a junior at Pace University. "I wasn't sexually attracted to him, and even though relationships are more than just physical, it made things really difficult." A lack of intimacy can hurt how close and connected you feel with your SO. It's possible to be in a relationship that fulfills you emotionally, but not physically.

3. You're stuck in the past

If you keep reminiscing and getting caught up in how things used to be that could be another sign that you're feeling unsettled. The beginning of relationships are often referred to as the honeymoon stage, because it only lasts for so long. "As my relationship progressed I felt myself feeling uneasy about things and realized that I was focusing on how things used to be," says Grace Lyons, a sophomore at William Paterson University. Relationships grow and so do the people in them, so if things aren't like they used to be that doesn't necessarily mean things are worse now. If you find yourself looking back to when you first started dating and how happy and in love you were, it might be time to talk things out with your SO.

4.  You don't give each other enough space

While it’s a problem when you and your SO don’t have enough time for each other, it can also be an issue when you spend all your time together. “During my freshman year, my (now ex) boyfriend and I literally did every single thing together and a lot of our issues stemmed from suffocating each other,” says Lauren McClure, a senior at the University of Wyoming. “Now, as a senior, I am finally secure enough to know when I need some space in my current relationship, and both of us let the other person do their own thing for a while.” Spending all your time together can lead you to lose track of who you are without your SO and make you feel unsure about whether or not to stay in the relationship.

5. You're stressed about the future

There are so many different things college students worry about, but a future after graduation is definitely the biggest stressor. “Trying to plan out my future was causing me a lot of stress and anxiety which hurt my relationship,” says Caitlyn Spears, a senior at Oakland University. "When I realized stress was causing me to take out my frustrations in my relationship I was able to openly talk to my boyfriend about our issues.” Being stressed out can lead you down a path of making rash decisions and possibly shutting out the people in your life. If stress is creating a barrier in your life, be aware that it can also create one in your relationship.

No one’s relationship is perfect, and it’s normal to feel unsure about it sometimes. The important thing is that you try and recognize why you’re feeling unsettled. Identifying the problem is the first step and will help you find the right solution!

Are Men & Women Treated Differently On Campus? 10 College Women Weigh In

4 Reasons Why You Aren’t Seeing Fitness Results Yet

$

Summer’s here, which means it’s time to get serious about your fitness routine. Whether you’ve signed up for a 5K race, decided to try out yoga or you’re just looking to get back on track with your health, it’s easy to fall into destructive habits that can take away from your hard work and keep you from getting the results you want. Luckily, we’ve talked to fitness and nutrition experts alike and pinpointed these common fitness pitfalls as well as what you can do to prevent them.

1. You have a bad diet

You may have heard the saying “abs are made in the kitchen” before. While the work that you’re putting in at the gym is important, it can all go to waste quickly if you’re not giving your body the fuel it needs to recover. Protein-rich foods and drinks such as yogurt, chocolate milk and bananas make great recovery snacks post-workout. However, as a collegiette it can be hard to bring these healthy foods into your diet when you’re on the go.

“Late-night pizza, dining hall food, drinking alcohol and not exercising are all factors that can contribute to weight gain in college,” says nutritionist and health expert Justine SanFilippo, who stresses the importance of eating healthy and exercising throughout your college years. “Try to only eat treats in moderation, and keep an overall healthy diet. Not only will this maintain your figure and improve your fitness, but it’ll help you do well in classes and prevent health issues in the future.”

However, eating healthier does not mean eating less. “A bad habit I always see amongst young women is skipping breakfast,” says Melanie Ludwig, a personal trainer and health expert. “Breakfast is so important because it kick starts your metabolism and gives you energy for the day, as well as any exercise you may be doing.”

While it may be tempting to reward yourself with a cookie or two after a hard workout, skip the empty calories and opt for a granola or protein bar instead. “I suggest healthy snacks before and after a workout such as a banana or energy bar,” says Ludwig. Your body will thank you!

2. You’re not getting enough sleep

Between going to class, working, attempting to maintain a social life and everything that comes in between, it’s nearly impossible to get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night as a collegiette. However, hitting the gym and then skipping out on sleep can take a major toll on your body over time.

“Most people require seven to eight hours of sleep a night which can be challenging in college,” says Ludwig. “If your body and mind are not rested, it is hard to have the energy to focus on a good workout. Not to mention, fatigue is also a risk factor for injury as you can lose your balance or trip and get hurt.”

Whether it means sneaking in a power nap after a run or setting a strict bedtime for yourself, do whatever it takes to make sure you’re getting the necessary ZZZs. If you don’t give your body the time to recover, you can’t expect results in return.

3. You’re doing the same workout every time

While it’s easy to fall in love with your favorite running trail or group yoga class, it’s important that you make time for a variety of workouts in your schedule. By doing the same workout every day, your body learns to adapt to the physical stress and over time will benefit less and less—to the point where doing the workout isn’t doing anything for you anymore.

“Doing the same workout every day is a recipe for staleness,” says Ludwig. “I tell my busiest clients to try and move their bodies most days of the week. Strength training is crucial so I recommend focusing on big muscle groups such as your upper body, core, and lower body two to three times a week. Exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, lunges and squats combine many of these muscle groups so you can do more work in less time.”

To avoid getting stuck in a routine, try working out with your friends or family members. Everyone’s preferences are different, and they may be able to introduce you to a new sport or gym routine that will surprise you. Or, sign up for classes you’ve never tried before; the new exercise will push your limits, and you’ll be able to do so in a guided environment. Being willing to step outside of your comfort zone is the key to getting results!

4. You’re only working one part of your body

You may have heard of spot reduction before, or the idea that you can focus on one part of your body where you want to lose weight or strengthen muscles. While the concept sounds ideal in theory, putting so much extra stress on one part of your body can lead to injury in the future. Plus, most spot reduction workouts are just myths.

“Don’t believe everything you see and read when it comes to exercise,” says Ludwig. Exercise is a science that is always evolving. You were born with certain genetics, and you can shape your body to the best of your genes. However, spot reducing or other “magic pill” exercises just aren’t realistic.

“Along with spot reduction, many young women are also under the impression that lifting weights will make you bulk up, but this isn’t true,” says SanFillippo. “Lifting weights can give you that toned look that many women want. It’s best to lift weights first, and then follow it with a cardio routine, because this helps your body burn more fat.”

Instead of buying into “fad” workouts like spot reduction, Ludwig recommends setting realistic goals with the SMART goal setting system. “SMART goals are specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, and timely,” she says. “If you miss a workout, cut yourself some slack. Always pick yourself up and keep your eye on your goals. Make your body a well-tuned machine, and your mind will also benefit.”

Regardless of your workout, make sure you’re paying attention to each part of your body. Lifting weights and using weight machines at the gym is a great way to make sure you’re targeting your lower half, abs, and upper half equally.

Don’t let your precious hours at the gym go to waste! If you’ve been working out regularly for several weeks or months and have yet to see results, take time to evaluate your own fitness routine and look for these common pitfalls that you may be falling into. Knowing your body, paying attention to nutrition as well as exercise and being willing to step outside of your comfort zone are all keys to success when it comes to achieving your goals and getting those results. Best of luck, collegiettes!

9 Queer Role Models All 20-Somethings Should Look Up To

Thanks to a societal shift in attitude, we’re starting to see more and more celebrities and public figures coming out as LGBTQ+. That’s amazing for the queer community and activists everywhere! These nine fabulous openly trans, lesbian and bisexual ladies make excellent queer role models for any 20-something to look up to.

1. Ellen Page

The star of Juno and X-Men came out in 2014 at Time to Thrive, a conference to promote the welfare of LGBTQ+ young people.

"I'm here today because I am gay," Ellen said to the conference audience, "and because maybe I can make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.”

It must be have been terrifying to come out to a crowd like that, but we think Ellen chose the perfect venue. The young LGBTQ+ audience members likely felt truly touched, and a real sense of solidarity with her in that moment.

2. Cara Delevingne

In 2015, everyone’s favorite model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne came out as bisexual, and then shortly after, had to defend her sexuality to the media.

"My sexuality is not a phase," Cara said. "I am who I am."

We love seeing Cara stand up for her bisexuality. All too often, people assume coming out as bisexual is a phase and that everyone has to "choose" eventually between straight and lesbian. As a bonus, Cara's relationship with the talented musician Anne Clark, better known as St. Vincent, is the absolute cutest!

3. Laverne Cox

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox is a transgender woman and activist, and she made history as the first trans person on the cover of TIME. Cox regularly speaks out against sexism and patriarchy, and was awarded the Stephen F. Colzak Award by GLAAD for her transgender activism, which Ellen Page presented her with. Too perfect. She was also the first transgender person to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.

"Ultimately, I'm a storyteller—imagining different ways to tell transgender stories,” said Laverne in an interview with NYLON. “I'm really interested in changing the ways in which we talk with and about transgender people, not only in personal conversation but also how we cover those stories in the media.”

It's so important to include diverse representations of transgender people in the media, and we love that Laverne is taking action in her own acting and storytelling. Laverne has said multiple times she doesn't want to be seen as a role model, but we can't help it. She slays as both an actress and an activist.

4. Raven-Symoné

The titular actress from everyone’s childhood favorite, That’s So Raven, hinted at her sexuality until she finally came out in 2013 because of her excitement over the U.S. Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision.

Raven's resulting tweet was unforgettable and way too relatable: “I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you.”

That's probably the sweetest way to come out and support the marriage equality decision all in one swing. Raven-Symoné took a risk and bravely opened up about her identity just at a time when the nation was divided on the issue. She strongly supported the LGBTQ+ community for quite some time before coming out. She'd previously posed for the NO H8 Campaign and participated in Pride events.

5. Anna Paquin

The True Blood star came out in 2010 during a PSA for the Give a Damn campaign that fights for LGBTQ+ equality, and she’s never been shy about advocating for the often-erased bisexual community.

"Well, I don't think it's a past tense thing," Anna Paquin said on The Larry King Show, about whether or not she was still bisexual because she married a man. "Are you still straight if you are with somebody? If you were to break up with them or if they were to die, it doesn't prevent your sexuality from existing. It doesn't really work like that."

Just like Cara, Anna stood up for the stereotypes that oppress bisexual people. And she does at every opportunity, speaking out about how she's proudly bisexual and married to former co-star Stephen Moyer, who supports her completely. It's so important for young bisexual women to have someone like Anna to look up to and who isn't afraid to take a stance for the community.

6. Evan Rachel Wood

In honor of Bisexual Awareness Week 2015, bisexual actress Evan Rachel Wood spoke out about how the community faces erasure.

"Remember, bisexuality doesn't mean halfway between gay or straight," Evan Rachel tweeted. "It is its own identity. I think in some cases people don't want to be labeled because they are ashamed to be bisexual. And this needs to stop."

It's great to see so many celebrities starting conversations about bisexuality as its own label, because erasure and oppression for the community still exists. We can add Evan Rachel to the list along with Cara and Anna for publically standing up alongside every bisexual person who's been told their sexuality isn't real.

7. Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen is literally the queen of coming out. She famously came out in a 1997 episode of her sitcom “Ellen.” Since then, she’s been one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ public figures in the US, and holds a number of awards. She was named to Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful WomenEntertainment Weekly’s 50 Most Powerful Entertainers, and the Mark Twain Humor Award.

While speaking against homophobic accusations made by US pastor Larry Tomczak, Ellen said, "The only way I'm trying to influence people is to be more kind and compassionate with one another. That is the message I'm sending out. I don't have an agenda. I'm not here to brainwash anyone. Be true to yourself. The most important thing is to be true to yourself."

There are so many homophobic claims about the LGBTQ+ agenda perpetuated by the media, and it's wonderful to see Ellen taking a public stance on the issue. She also spoke out about the use of quotation marks when referring to her as "married," and she made it clear that her marriage to Portia de Rossi is equal to any male/female marriage. Rock on, Ellen!

8. Kristen Stewart

Actress Kristen Stewart has undeservedly been knocked for her role in Twilight, but she’s coming into her own in the years since the series’ release. The actress was outed by her mom when she was dating her assistant, Alicia Cargile, but Kristen refuses to label herself.

“I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight,” said Stewart. “It’s like, just do your thing.”

Well said. She speaks for everyone who isn’t sure of their sexuality, or doesn’t want to choose a label. There’s a reason for the “Q” in LGBTQ+, and many people identify as simply “queer” to avoid putting a label on which gender they date.

9. Jodie Foster

How could we not include Jodie Foster on this list? The acclaimed actress and director came out in 2013 at the Golden Globe Awards, after receiving the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award.

In 2014, Foster married her girlfriend Alexandra Hedison and declined to comment publicly about it. Foster’s been known over the years for not opening her private life to the world, and we respect that so much.

“I hope that you’re not disappointed that there won’t be a big coming out speech tonight,” Foster said when she came out. “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age, those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met.”

Jodie was basically saying that she'd already come out to her friends and family long ago, but she still wanted the world to know she's proud of who she is. In this social media-obsessed age, where everyone knows one another's business, we can’t help but see exactly what she means.

This year, even President Barack Obama became a role model for the LGBTQ+ community as the first standing President to be photographed for a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender publication in Out magazine's Out 100 2015. President Obama was selected as the cover model for his strong alliance with the queer community, and his strong stance in support of LGBTQ+ equal rights. The list of admirable queer community members and allies is only growing, and every year it seems we can add another badass supporter to the list.

6 Things You Didn’t Know About Your Underwear

$

Underpants, panties, knickers, unmentionables… whatever you call them, they seem quite self-explanatory. You just slip on a fresh pair every day; how can there be much more to it than that? While these essential undergarments are pretty straightforward in function, there are a few facts about them you need to get straight, because there actually is more to them than just picking out the cutest ones at Victoria’s Secret!

1. Your panties have a shelf life, even if it’s not clearly defined

You probably have a few favorite pairs of underwear. Maybe you own a couple of sexier-looking, frillier pairs that you spent a bit more on, but let’s be real here—one of your favorites is usually a clearly worn, but super comfy pair that you can’t wait to wear after doing the laundry every week. You know the pair—maybe it’s a little faded, and there might be a few holes here and there, but they’ve still got some life left in them, right?

If you have any underwear that is either frayed, has holes, period stains, overstretched elastic or is a different color from when you bought it, we hate to say it, but it’s time to toss it and buy some new ones. We promise: You’ll find newer and comfier ones again.

2. Cotton is the way to go, for both comfort and health

Almost like sheets with a high thread count, cotton panties are the highest mark of comfort that you should shop for. Not only do they offer a soft feel, but they’re breathable and are usually less expensive than synthetic materials. Cotton is also the optimal underwear material because it’s nicer to our skin and won’t cause the same irritation that might come from a nylon or polyester pair.

3. Thongs and the gym are two things that shouldn’t go together

You don’t even think twice about throwing on a sports bra when you exercise, so why should performance-specific underwear be any different of a choice? Anyone who has tried wearing a regular bra to spin class or on a run probably knows there’s some pretty uncomfortable friction going on, and that can happen just as much with underwear.

You may not want to risk a visible panty line while wearing your favorite lululemon leggings, but a thong isn’t exactly the best solution. Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Stamford Hospital, explains that not only will your skin get irritated because of movement, but you also could be transferring bacteria from the back to front of that region. Luckily, many athletic wear companies now make lightweight, seamless underwear that will keep you dry and comfy while working out. Popular performance wear brands like Nike and Under Armour also make shorts that are already lined with specially made, moisture-wicking undies, which allow you to forego a pair altogether!

4. In general, thongs put you at a higher risk for infections

In order for them to do their job, thongs usually fit pretty snug. When you combine the tight fit with the abrasive material they’re often made of (like lace), you have a pretty good equation that could equal infection. Dr. Ghofrany says frequently wearing them could increase your chances of developing one, especially if you’ve had infections down there before. “Thongs are not the most breathable type of underwear,” she says. “You want underwear that won’t trap moisture because moisture attracts bacteria.”

So while Dr. Ghofrany doesn’t urge everyone to toss their thong collection, she recommends toning it down a bit if they’re your daily go-to. This will give your lady parts a bit of a breather—literally.

5. Fancier undies need to be washed delicately

When it comes to laundering, not all pairs of underwear are created equal. Most cotton types can be machine-washed and tossed in the dryer without any issue, but more delicate pairs need extra love! The first rule of thumb is to always read the label. Regardless of how you are washing these pieces, be sure not to use soaps with powerful chemicals like bleach or chlorine. Use special detergents like Woolite Delicates or the Laundress’ Delicate Wash for these items, since they don’t use harsh ingredients.

If you’re planning on hand-washing your delicates in the sink, you still want to separate colors as you would with a machine load. Soak your underwear for a few minutes in water that is lukewarm, but not hot, before rinsing them with cool water. Wring them out gently, to get rid of most of the water, but not so much that you stretch out the fabric. Line-drying delicate pieces is always a safe bet, but if you choose to use the dryer, avoid high settings.

6. The looser the better

When it comes to the fit of underwear, you obviously don’t want it drooping and falling off, but you should seek a fit that isn’t so tight that it’s leaving uncomfortable marks on your waistline. Aside from discomfort, tight underwear traps moisture, even more so when worn under skinny jeans or leggings—and you want that area to breathe! Dr. Ghofrany also recommends skipping underwear altogether at night. “I don’t advise going commando during the day under tight-fitting clothes, but letting your genital region breathe at night while sleeping can be beneficial,” she says.

It may feel like there are so many details to remember when it comes to your underwear—but all you have to do is keep these tips in mind to ensure comfort, hygiene and convenience!

You have your favorite workout outfit on, a pair of comfortable sneakers and a playlist of beats to get you pumped - what else could you possibly need? Maybe it's time to consider a fitness tracker. As intimidating as that might sound, the fitness tracker could seriously boost your workout routine and your attitude towards exercise. Having a tracker can motivate you to stick to your fitness goals, and the numeric results give you a clear sense of your day-to-day progress.

The Ultimate Accessory

Besides being a snazzy-looking addition to your workout ensembles, the aptly named fitness tracker records data on the number of steps you have taken, distance you've covered, your heart rate, calories consumed and burned, and can even give feedback on quality of sleep. Some, like the FitBit, will sync to your phone and computer so you can store long-term information about how you are working out. Fitness trackers also include independent apps.

"I swear by my FitBit for getting me to be more aware of my movement throughout any given day," says Melanie Ludwig, owner of Prestige Fitness. "I have many clients and students who love their chosen fitness trackers to help them reach their goals."

Melanie also points out that because some fitness trackers encourage you to log your food and exercise information (i.e. MyFitnessPal, Jawbone UP3, Apple Health), using one could lead you to stop making some unhealthy impulse decisions. Knowing that you will be recording information on say, your calorie intake, could lead you to be more aware of what you're eating. And here's where the genius of the fitness tracker comes in - the device provides objective data, but you ultimately decide what to do with that information. The impact of the fitness tracker is therefore equally due to both psychology and technology.

By checking your fitness tracker, you are also suddenly able to appreciate the exercise value of daily activities, such as walking up a few flights of stairs to your room or going to the grocery store. Realizing that these habits can add up to a positive result may lead you to make small, but effective changes to your routine. For example, you might start taking the stairs more often, pace around your apartment to get a quick workout, or get proactive with doing chores. Of course depending on how much you want to challenge yourself, the fitness tracker could lead you to start a fancy new exercise routine. (Interval workouts, anyone?)

Melanie explains that with the right attitude, you don't have to be a fitness guru to get benefits from using a fitness tracker, "Fitness need not be a job, but a positive and healthy lifestyle that can incorporate individual lifestyles."

Types of Fitness Trackers: What's Out There?

If the above reasons have gotten you interested in trying a fitness trackers, then get ready! There are a ton of options out there, from the classic FitBit wristband to phone apps like MyFitnessPal.

FitBit produces a fitness tracker that is sleek, user-friendly, and offers an endless number of applications. It's even earned a place on HC's holiday gift guide! Additionally, FitBit products have adjustable settings that allow you to use its stats not only for running, but also for cardio workouts, cycling and cross-fit exercises. However, among the company's collection of fitness trackers, prices and product complexity can vary. The most student-budget friendly versions are the FitBit Zip and the FitBit Flex - priced below $50 and $100 respectively - which both provide you with information about distance, steps and calories. For fashionistas who want a fitness tracker without compromising personal style, check out Mira, a brand that emphasizes gorgeous design in their trackers.

But if you're not planning on splurging, you can get the same activity tracking services from apps. They are as easy to operate as their wearable counterparts and many are free. For those of you who would rather not sift through the mind-boggling number of choices in the app store, check out  this list by PC Mag of their favorite fitness apps. Among them are Charity Miles, an app that donates to charity for each mile you complete, and MyFitnessPal, which tracks not only your fitness habits, but also foods you consume.

Fitness brands such as FitBit and Nike also created their own apps to integrate their products with technology and promote their brands. Kayla Lewkowicz, a graduate of Colby College says, "I love Nike+ to track my runs since it shows me average pace and splits. It calls it out at each mile so I can stay on pace."

Should You Get A Fitness Tracker?

Whether you're a secret couch potato or a superstar athlete (or anything in between!), you'll be able to find an activity tracker that suits your needs.

Annie Yang, a freshman at New York University, recommends MyFitnessPal and praises its user-friendliness. "MyFitnessPal uses the pedometer built into your phone and converts it directly into calories burned. I never have to worry about keeping track of how many hours I walked and what pace it was." For exercise, Annie doesn't schedule workouts but rather keeps track of her walks around the city and when running errands. Annie also reports that since she has been using the app for a few months, she has been able to avoid the dreaded freshman 15 - and even lose a few pounds by simply keeping track of her meals.

For students who are already used to exercising regularly, fitness trackers are handy tools to help them fulfill their athletic goals. Tahsin Akanda, a college sophomore and former track captain who runs at least twice a week, uses Nike+ Running as a supplement for her training runs so she can receive exact measurements on an interval or speed workout. However, Tahsin's experience with fitness trackers warrants a caveat about getting too obsessed with metrics: "I would apply a lot of pressure on myself for being inefficient with rest days and strove to cut every last second from my average run pace. I became fixed on speed and numbers, but later realized I had nearly burnt myself out in trying to reduce down time." Nevertheless, she still recommends using a fitness tracker as long as you don't become over reliant.

As with everything, the key to being healthy is balance. Tracking your activity and food intake can be addictive, so be aware of how much time and energy you are spending over your fitness tracker. Because while setting and fulfilling your fitness goals everyday is great, nobody needs to be as perfect and systematic as the ideal that technology creates.

McKenna Bulkley, a junior at the University of Missouri, says, "I had a FitBit, but I had to discontinue using it after I became obsessed with tracking everything. It became unhealthy because I was always worried about what the app said and what my 'stats' were."

An anonymous student had a similar concern with fitness trackers. "I also find that on days when I'm less active, FitBit kind of gives me some sort of guilt that I should be more active. It depends on the person - it can either motivate you, or make you feel guilty on less active days."

The Verdict

Fitness trackers provide you with the resources to set realistic goals, track your progress, and get pumped about transforming your daily routines into a productive pseudo-workout. They can work for anyone and everyone, from gals who just want a space where they can chart their eating and exercise habits to athletes who are looking to add structure to their workouts.

Know yourself before you commit to a fitness tracker. While FitBit and activity tracker apps map out a ton of information about your activity levels, they are not worth obsessing over. Numbers will tell you a lot about yourself, but in the end, you know yourself best. With that said, what are you waiting for?
