22 Signs You Grew Up Latina

$

0

We always knew there was something different about our family, and although we may roll our eyes at some of the things they did (and still do), you have to admit that growing up Latina is a pretty amazing experience—a point of pride! If you remember any of following scenarios, you were definitely raised by Latino parents. And are totally proud of it! As you should be!

1. You ask your parents and grandparents for a "bendicion" when you arrive and leave the house or when you talk to them on the phone.

2. Your house always smells like food. Mami has dinner made at 8 a.m. so the kitchen can stay clean all day. That being said, you weren’t allowed in the kitchen.

3. You know the difference between Adobo and Sazon and are surprised when someone says they've never heard of it. Excuse me, but how do you cook exactly?

4. You greet everyone with a kiss on the cheek. Even the people you don’t know, but somehow you’re related to.

5. Watching telenovelas was the best part of your day.

6. Abuela always had Vicks VapoRub and when you were sick you would get drenched in it. We still can’t stand the smell, but it apparently cures everything—cold, flu or broken leg.

7. It's normal to store pots and pans in the oven. Just remember to take them out before you preheat the oven.

8. Fried food is the best kind of food. Tostones, arepas, bacalaito, alcapurias...I mean literally the list just goes on and on.

9. No room is complete without a cross on the wall, a bible open on you bedside table or a photo of la Virgen or Jesus.

10. You've been drinking café con leche since you came out the womb. And that’s why we can’t function without it.

11. You grew up on shows like Primer Impacto and Sabado Gigante.

12. Cleaning the house involved Mami blasting her favorite tunes and dancing as she mopped.

13. Everyone in your family has a weird nickname. Like Beba or Bebo. (This is from personal experience.)

14. You randomly meet cousins you never even knew existed. Turns out you have about 576 (maybe more) of them spread all over the world.

15. You grew up watching cartoons and movies in Español.

16. You know that just because your abuela has a container of butter in the fridge doesn’t mean that there is actually butter in it. Recycling at its best.

17. Bread with butter and a cup of coffee (or Malta) IS a complete breakfast.

18. Your mami always had to meet the parents before you could spend the night at anyone’s house.

19. You celebrate Navidad and Dia de los Reyes. And you’re going to make sure your kids do the same.

20. You started wearing heels since the moment you started to walk, aka you’re a total pro.

21. Everyone in your family calls you “la prieta linda.” Or something really close to that.

22. Selena will always be your idol. Selena as in Selena Quintanilla.

I Based All My Decisions For a Week on What Rory Gilmore Would Do

Growing up, I nearly lived Gilmore Girls. It was just my mom and me for years—my bookworm, introverted self and her, working in a hotel by day while taking care of me at night. I later proved to be a straight-A student, contemplated going to Yale, and became editor of my school newspaper—I was, in all but name, Rory.

At the time, I knew nothing of the show (I know, crazy, right?!). It wasn’t until the first few weeks of my freshman year that I discovered it—thanks to a text from my own Lorelai, of course—and recognized that this show totally reflected my childhood. Now, it may not be a perfect representation, but I loved the show nevertheless. With the upcoming revival on the horizon, a “What Would Rory Do?” challenge was perfect for me.

The Approach

When I took on the challenge of living like Rory for a week, my first step was a plan for how to go about doing so. While this admittedly translated to binge-watching quite a bit of Gilmore Girls, I ultimately decided to tackle it in the ultimate Rory-esque way: I made a list. In fact, I made a list in a special WWRD? notebook, labeled with my ceremonial initials for the upcoming week.

Related: 25 Reasons 'Gilmore Girls' is Still Relevant

Stereotypically type A, some of the Roryisms weren't too far from my own quirks: excessive reading, lots of coffee and a crazy best friendship with my mom. Others seemed like they'd be a challenge: immediate, relevant pop culture references, a never-ending supply of food... and where the heck do I find myself a spare Logan Huntzberger?

Day One

The first day started off shakily when I sleepily shut off my alarm and missed my first class—not my most Yale-bound Rory moment. I quickly reminded myself, though, that even Rory has off days; the important part is rebounding. With that determination to improve, the rest of the day could only go upward.

What more Gilmore way to rebound than with food? My vegan diet altered my choices a bit, but a plate of “bacon” seemed appropriate. A quick Instagram post had people talking about what I titled my Rory Gilmore Challenge, and me thinking yet again: What would Rory do?

Day Two

By this point, my mom had already gotten a bit tired of my ever-increasing amount of phone calls—probably a first for the parent of any college student! We had an entire conversation about tacos, completely embodying the relationship between Rory and Lorelai.

With an obscure documentary, a discussion of George Eliot’s first novel, and a candy-tasting article-writing session, Day Two was intensely Rory-esque. My body was getting used to copious amounts of coffee, and I even found myself more motivated at work.

Day Three

Day Three brought with it an increase in productivity and motivation. With five publications, classwork and personal pieces, writing alone takes up a crazy amount of my time, but the WWRD? idea had taken over any sense of stress I’d otherwise have felt at this point. My first piece on my school’s historical blog was published and I understood how Rory felt as she ran around the Daily News newsroom.

Day Four

The next day, I wrote a fitting piece about the revival, and continued living like a Gilmore girl. As a double major/double minor, I’m sometimes only a step behind Rory’s crazy-packed schedule of 50 classes.

Day Five

Coincidentally enough, this day marked my twentieth birthday! Thanks to some wonderful friends (shout out to my personal Lane and Zach, Shelby and Miquel, and pre-Lucy Marty, Sam!), my day was surrounded by food, friends and all sorts of fun. A crazy amount of carbs and a costume party later, I socialized enough to make Lorelai proud, and successfully had a great time. A friend and I exchanged a Gilmore Girls reference discussing my next celebration—a trip to Atlantic City with my mom, buying 21 things as I turn 21.

Day Six

Halloween arrived and I prepared my Gatsby-style flapper costume, complete with lots of literary references. The real excitement for the evening, however, was my mom and sister’s arrival on campus! There’s little to top Rory and Lorelai when they join forces. Both my birthday celebrations and my Rory Challenge Week were topped over Mexican food and a daiquiri.

Day Seven

Admittedly, I was upset to see my time playing Rory come to an end. How better to finish than curling up with a book?

In the end, I learned a lot from living like Rory. Hopefully the motivation and productivity can remain—if not, I’ll just ask myself, “What would Rory do?”

19 Ways to Prepare for Thanksgiving, as told by Ron Swanson

$

0

Thanksgiving, by definition, is the one day of the year where it is completely acceptable to enter into a food coma (from which you may never return)––not really, but we like to say so, at least!

When preparing for the special day, there are some necessary steps to take in order to ensure you are completely ready to consume the absolute most food possible. Check them out below and get ready for the BEST Thanksgiving of your life!

Warn your family prior to Thanksgiving that you will not be stopped until you can consume no more.

Thanksgiving is a judgment-free zone, y'all!

Deny any tempts to spoil your appetite before dinner is served.

Resist the appetizers we tell you! Resist...

Avoid social interactions and mentally prepare.

The food will be served shortly.

Spot the food... Run to the food.

We recommend adding a little pep to your step in the form of a dance.

When hungry family members get in your way, don't be afraid to use your utensils to fend them off...

We have a fork and we are not afraid to use it.

...If that doesn't work, reach for the nearest piece of furniture!

You gotta do what you gotta do...

Start with small servings to ensure your plate has room for EVERYTHING.

Don't worry, you'll obviously be back for more.

Put the salad down... it's a holiday!

Don't be that person.

Convince yourself (and your body) that you're ready to eat... a lot!!

Be afraid, mashed potatoes, be very afraid.

Take your plate somewhere quiet where no one can ruin your moment.

PSA: Please don't talk to us while we're eating.

Don't even let the TV distract you––focus on the task at hand.

You'll get more accomplished this way.

Eat in intervals, so you can keep coming back for more.

Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Don't pay attention to how much food (or lack thereof) your family is eating.

Eat however much makes you happy––that's all that matters!! So what if you had the five biggest plates of the day?

Seriously, embrace being the turkey-eating champion!

It's honestly whatever.

Don't forget to save room for dessert!

Don't worry about how much you ate for dinner. After all, stressed spelled backwards is desserts...

Ignore the haters who judge you for STILL eating at 10 p.m.

"This is my moment and I will not stop until I can no longer move."

Take home leftovers for when you're hungry again.

Cause it'll be sooner than you expect.

After a long day, when you can't eat another bite, find a place to lay down and die.

It hurts so good...

Wake up the next day with absolutely no regrets about the ten pounds you gained!

There's obviously more to love.

See you soon, Thanksgiving! *wink*

A High Protein Potato Salad Perfect for Thanksgiving (& More!)

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Healthy Helper by Kaila Proulx, a Her Campus Blogger Network member. Read the full post here.

Still putting together your Thanksgiving menu? Be sure to add this high protein take on classic potato salad! This unique recipe is slightly sweet and slightly salty with a delicious mix of flavors and textures. The use of skyr instead of mayo and the addition of steamed lentils amps up the protein while keeping this traditional side dish low in fat. Light yet rich tasting, easy to make, and perfect for your next family get together!

Potatoes are a staple this time of year. From mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving to comforting shepherd’s pie and hearty slow-cooked stews. They’re starchy, filling, and provide a ton of nutrients per serving.

Usually potato salad is more of a summer dish, but I’ve found a unique way to prepare it that makes it perfect for any and all seasons. In fact, the recipe I’m sharing today is the perfect addition to your holiday table this year!

Ingredients (6 servings)

  • 2 1/2 pounds of red potatoes
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 dill pickles, chopped
  • large handful of dill, chopped
  • 1/2 cup steamed lentils
  • 4 oz siggi’s 4% Fig & Lemon Zest Icelandic Style Skyr
  • 4 oz siggi’s 0% Plain Icelandic Style Skyr
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 3 tbsp whole grain dijon mustard

Instructions

Place potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Heat on medium (do not boil) until potatoes can be pierced with a fork (not falling apart). Strain potatoes and place on a cooking sheet to cool for 10 minutes. While potatoes are cooling, place other ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir together. Add potatoes and mix together again. Place in the refrigerator to chill. Serve cold.

I Tried To Sleep Eights Hours a Night For a Week

Getting eight hours of sleep a night should not be difficult. I like my sleep and I don’t believe in pulling all-nighters. However my college is far from home and the long commute means I wake up at 5 a.m. That combined with the fact that my all my modules have assignments due every day (except Thursday) makes me a very stressed student.

For a week, I tried to get eight hours of sleep. These were my results.

Night One (Sunday)

I specifically chose this day to start because this starts my last week on campus. I planned to go to sleep at 9 p.m. but tossed and turned till 9:30 p.m. (that’s thirty minutes earlier than my normal sleep time though so I guess it’s something). I woke up exhausted and considered just not bothering going to sleep early. However, I know from past experience it takes my body three days to adjust to a new sleeping time.

RELATED: 15 Signs You're in a Relationship With Your Bed

Today was the day that I needed to do a test online and hand in a translation assignment. Because I was tired this was all that I did. I tried to take a nap in the afternoon but it only lasted five minutes. I really, really missed my bed. I swear my eyes are closing right now...zzzzz.

Night Two (Monday)

I fell asleep at 9 p.m.! Or a few minutes after, I’m not too sure. Being tired all day definitely worked in my favor. I was incredibly thrilled that a) I slept straight through the night and b) woke up a few seconds before my alarm, feeling totally rested — a first for me.

The assignment due today is the translation I handed in yesterday as well as a Classical Civilization assignment. Unfortunately, these assignments are weekly so once I hand in this week’s assignment, I get another one. So instead of having to have to come in next week when all my lectures end this week, I simply did the assignment today and handed them both in. I also managed to print out all my notes and start on my studying for finals. I feel pretty proud of myself.

Night Three (Tuesday)

Okay so I slept through the night but woke up at 4:45 a.m. So not happy with that. At least all that’s due today is some reading for Classical Civilization. We have a new lecturer who likes to ask questions on the readings as well as have us all sit in the front of the class (tell me I’m not the only person who thinks he’s evil). Since all I had to do was my reading for Classical Civilization, I also read seven chapters of my assigned reading for English. I also had to go print more notes because the lecturers sent them to me last-minute. I sometimes think they secretly enjoy making me work this hard.

Night Four (Wednesday)

I went to bed at the late hour of 9:30 p.m. since I have no classes tomorrow. I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and then went back to bed. Treat yo'self!

Today I completed the last of my online tests for Classical Civilization as well as some Criminology work. I also read 30 pages of Mhudi (my English reading). Can you tell how pleased I am with my new productivity levels? I feel like there’s nothing I can’t do.

Night Five (Thursday)

I don’t want to go to campus tomorrow! It’s a Friday! I know I went to bed at 9 p.m. but I’m pretty sure I tossed and turned for a while. Going to campus on Fridays upsets me since before this semester, I never had to go to campus on a Friday. Oh well.

I woke up with my alarm at 5 a.m. and my eyes seem unable to open. This is not good.

Since today is my last day of campus, I decided to treat myself with some shows. I was halfway through watching Jane The Virgin when I found out that my seminar was cancelled as the tutor’s mother was unwell. (See? Told you the university liked me to work for no reason). Thankfully I was able to go home early. I did nothing productive but I played through several levels of Pet Rescue Saga and I didn’t need a nap.

Night Six (Friday)

Why is there nothing on TV? I went to bed at 9 p.m. Stupid idea since I ended up waking at…yes, you guessed it, 5 a.m. I read for an hour before decided to try and review some of my notes. There is such a thing as too much productivity. I went back to bed at 6:30 a.m…because I could.

Night Seven (Saturday)

I went to bed at 9 p.m. again and woke up at 6 a.m. to get ready for church. I did nothing but I don’t feel bad. I’m on study leave which means you’re supposed to leave your studying alone. Kidding. Sort of.

So that was my week sleeping eight hours. It was incredibly tiring after the first night since it was difficult to adjust to a new sleeping schedule but it was so worth it! I was not as stressed as usual, I got lots of work done and I was not as tired as usual. I think eight hours of sleep a night is going to be something I’m going to do every night.

It seems like it's great for my productivity levels—instead of doing just one assignment a day, I was able to do two or three. I was also able to work in advance on assignments which was a huge advantage since this freed up time for me to start my studying. I suggest that everyone at least try for eight hours of sleep a night. It's healthy, you wake up well-rested and you're able to accomplish more the next day. I guess there's a reason those eight hours of sleep have always been recommended!

13 College Women Get Real About Drugs On Campus

It’s no secret that college is seen by many as a time to experiment. And one main vehicle of experimentation is, of course, drugs.

While there have been many articles, movies and TV shows that discuss drugs on campus, we wanted to know the truth. So we asked 13 college women the real deal with the drug culture on their campuses.

“Drugs are here, but more like marijuana and Adderall. I've never seen someone actually do drugs but know people who do them. Marijuana is the most popular drug; I've yet to hear about any of the harder ones. I have friends who smoke marijuana and I've never felt pressured to try it. I've been offered but my decisions were respected once I declined.”

-Chrismaly, Case Western Reserve University Class of 2018

“There are drugs on my campus but it not like it's crazy noticeable. Drugs do get worst as you get older but it's not like high school where you are around them more. College is much bigger than high school. The biggest drugs ‘on the market’ right now are like rave drugs, so ecstasy, LSD, all those fun ones because they help you stay awake so you can do all the homework and assignments and school stuff.”

-Sarah, University of Arizona Class of 2019

“My friends don’t do any drugs, except for occasionally smoking weed, but there is definitely a culture of students doing cocaine in terms of harder drugs. From what I’ve seen it seems more prevalent amongst wealthier students.”

-Elizabeth, University of Pennsylvania Class of 2016

Related: 11 College Women Get Real About Study Drugs

“I believe that drugs are fairly prevalent on campus. I know a lot of people who use drugs casually and a few who have gotten busted for marijuana possession on campus. Personally, I smoke weed occasionally or take Adderall if I have a big paper or something due the next day and I'm behind. I don't think there's a lot of pressure to try different drugs on campus because there is still a bit of a stigma against them.”

-Kristen, University of Miami Class of 2019

“I’ve been offered cocaine. It’s pretty out of the open – as far as I can see. Most people I know on campus don’t even think of weed as something illegal.”

-Lynn, University of Delaware Class of 2016

“I mostly hear about weed and heroin. I do think there is a pressure on students to try different drugs to fit in. I remember once this one guy kept pressuring my friends and I to take some pills he found and the other four girls took it while I did not.”

-Elizabeth, Humboldt State University Class of 2016

“Marijuana is almost everywhere. And I do feel judged when I mention that I don't like it, nor do I want to be around people who are smoking it. I don't think anyone realizes just how bad it is for you, because the media is like, ‘Oh it's not like cocaine or something’.”

-Nicole, Siena College Class of 2018

Related: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Molly

“Drugs are decently present on my college campus. Weed is the most popular drug, but some other people do cocaine, acid or molly. I definitely see and hear about people doing drugs.”

-Rachel, James Madison University Class of 2017

“Drugs are very prevalent in my campus. Everyday you overhear someone talking about coke or Xanax. I have never touched harder drugs, but if I ever wanted to, I know exactly where to get them. It's easily accessible. I don't think there is much pressure to try harder drugs, but it may be different in sororities and fraternities, considering the people on our campus who sell these drugs are in those organizations.”

-Katie, SUNY Oneonta Class of 2018

“Students do lots of different drugs on campus. The most prevalent is likely marijuana. It can be found throughout dorms, apartments and especially fraternity houses. You see it, hear about it and smell it. The other big drug on campus is probably Adderall, which explodes in popularity at the end of each semester as students study for finals. I don't mind students smoking weed, but the use of Adderall for studying bothers me. It feels like these students are gaining an unfair advantage by taking the pills. The other drugs you find are cocaine, ecstasy and other party drugs along those lines. There was a kid in my dorm my freshman year who used Viagra all the time too, but I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with the little blue pill since.”

-Rebecca, University of Maryland Class of 2017

“Drugs don't have a significant role on my college campus. If you want them, you have to go look for them; they're not easily accessible. The most common drug is marijuana, which I personally partake in and like many, I don't find it a big deal whatsoever.”

-Cheyenne, University of California Santa Barbara Class of 2019

Related: The Weed Files: College Girls and Marijuana

“Students mostly do molly because raves are a very big thing at my school and people like to roll when they're at them. I would say the biggest drug on my campus would be weed over anything else. Everyone smokes weed, it's like an every day thing for a lot of people. Then you have the people who do coke. I know a fair share of people who do coke often.”

-Ally, San Diego State University Class of 2017

“As a freshman, I have noticed that there is a bit more of drug use than I expected. I, thankfully, have never witnessed anyone doing hard drugs, such as cocaine or ecstasy, but I have seen peers smoking marijuana. However, that doesn't go to say that I haven't heard of people talking about the stronger aforementioned drugs; I remember being at a frat party and thinking, ‘What the hell did I just overhear?’ I have heard of people who try different drugs to impress a guy or their friends. Unfortunately, it happens. I'm just thankful I personally don't succumb to that pressure.”

-Gabriella, University of North Carolina at Wilmington Class of 2019

3 Things That Guys Say Make You Girlfriend Material

$
0
0

Sometimes, this crazy thing called love can be a little confusing. It’s as if talking to a new love interest means not appearing to be too available, but still letting them know that we’re interested. When it comes to getting to know a new potential beau, we tend to jump through all kinds of hoops and hurdles just to figure out what would make them want to call back and, more importantly, what makes them actually want to commit. We asked a few real live college guys (and collegiettes) the million dollar question: what makes a girl girlfriend material? Here’s what they came up with.

1. Someone who's supportive

To some people, the key to a relationship is making sure that both partners are supportive of each other's needs and want to better each other. “I would commit to a girl who cares enough to not only want to better herself, but just as equally wants to better me and is vocal about it,” says Dre, a senior at New York University. “Like showing me things and pushing me to do things that are great for me.” What he’s getting at is that being a support system is crucial. According to Dre, knowing how to make your guy feel like a better person is the key to making your relationship successful. The idea is to push him and keep him motivated to be greater.

2. Someone who doesn't play games

In other words, cut the mind games. Seeing a text and purposely waiting a certain amount of time to even think about responding is a little petty and has the potential to put your romance in danger. Playing games and not being clear about your feelings can put you in jeopardy of missing out on learning valuable information about your new crush, not to mention that it can confuse the both of you. Be honest about your intentions.

3. Someone who has confidence

The good news is that there's actually nothing wrong with being a little into yourself. “I’ve always noticed that the most attractive trait a person can have is confidence,” says Alexa Gould, a 2015 graduate of the University of Georgia. “Being attracted to a confident person means being attracted to someone who radiates a positive energy that demonstrates that they’re sure of who they are and what their goals are and that they have a can-do attitude.” As women, we sometimes have a tendency of being overly apologetic and humble in order to appease other peoples’ feelings. But that shouldn’t be the case. There’s a fine line between confidence and cockiness, so realize that it’s perfectly fine to show your new love interest that you’re sure of yourself. Don’t be afraid to hold anything back!

It’s difficult to get inside peoples’ brains, especially when it comes to trying to discover your new beau’s true feelings, and ultimately what it is that will make him commit to you. Everyone is different so in the end, it’s hard to figure out what people want in a relationship. When it comes to being girlfriend material, always remember to be yourself and soon enough, the right person will come along to appreciate it.

5 Hairstyles That Are Easier Than They Look

If you’ve ever found yourself on hair and beauty Pinterest boards while procrastinating, you know how glamourous the styles are. You might look at the hair tutorials and think, “How could I ever do that with my hair?” before hopelessly scrolling to the desserts section.

No longer, collegiettes! We’re here to give you the confidence to master hairstyles you’ve always wanted to try. These five are a lot easier than they look, so get your hair products and accessories ready!

1. Headband Tuck

This boho-chic style is super easy to recreate in less than one minute, so it’s perfect for the days when you’re in a rush to get to class. Treasures & Travels, a Vancouver-based lifestyle blog, created this easy tutorial so you can get the look yourself!

Directions

  1. Place an elastic headband of your choice over the top of your hair.
  2. Gather the ends of your strands together, as if you were getting ready to make a ponytail.
  3. Tuck the ends up into the back of your headband.
  4. Roll all of the hair into your headband until it’s all tightly rolled around.

2. Inside-Out Ponytail

Throwing your strands up into a simple high or low ponytail may be your usual routine, but it’s easy to rock your trusted hairstyle in a new way without much effort. This hairstyle inspo from Bustle will take you less than a minute to master and will up your ponytail game from 0 to 100 in no time. Bonus perk: It’s totally internship and workday appropriate, so feel free to wear this inside-out ponytail the next time you’re headed into the office!

Directions

  1. Pull and tie all of your hair into a low ponytail in the back.
  2. Create a small hole at the base of the ponytail (above the band) with your fingers.
  3. Bring your ponytail through the hole, flipping your strands inside out.

3. Messy Fishtail Braid

Ever since Blake Lively donned a messy fishtail braid to the premiere of Savages in New York City back in 2012, we’ve been obsessed with every possible variation of fishtail braids. If anyone can set a hairstyle trend, it’s the flawless Gossip Girl goddess!

Instead of a traditional fishtail, try the double-braid look featured in the photo above. As tricky as it looks to master, it’s actually pretty simple. Collegiettes with both straight and wavy hair can rock this style, which works best with long hair. Check out this tutorial from PoPular Haircuts and sport this flirty style at your next sorority mixer or girls’ night out.

Directions

  1. Create one small fishtail braid on one side of your hair, whichever side you prefer. Secure with bobby pins and small, clear elastics if needed.
  2. Style a large and loose twisted fishtail braid with the rest of your hair, securing the end with a clear elastic band. For directions on how to create a traditional fishtail braid, check out this video tutorial from Luxy Hair.
  3. Use bobby pins to secure any strands you want to stay put.
  4. Pull a few long pieces of your hair to the front of your look for a boho vibe.

4. The Half-Crown Braid

Another trendy braided hairstyle, this half-crown braid involves braiding two small sections of your hair and then having them meet together behind your head. It’s perfect for when you’re in a rush, but you still need the perfect #IWokeUpLikeThis selfie for Instagram. Christina, the talented blogger behind Hair Romance, shows us how it’s done. Just make sure you have two small clear hair elastics and some bobby pins on hand to secure the style!

Directions

  1. Take a 1-to-2-inch section of your hair on one side, whichever you prefer, above your ear.
  2. Split the section into three parts and braid it.
  3. Angle your braid towards the back of your head, securing the end with one of your clear plastic elastics.
  4. Repeat this process with a section of hair on the opposite side of your head.
  5. Secure the first braid with bobby pins in the back of your head.
  6. Cross your second braid over the first one, tucking the end in behind the first braid.
  7. Secure the entire look in place with additional bobby pins as needed, and spray with a light hair spray if desired.

5. The Bow Bun

This adorable hairstyle isn’t just for your little sister – it’s perfect for collegiettes, too! This feminine and girly hair bow is super easy to create, even though it may look like it’s only for professionals. You’ll be turning heads all night long with this cute style, since it’s a major conversation starter and the perfect finishing touch to an edgy outfit. Kate from Running on Happiness helps you get the look yourself in five simple steps.

Directions

  1. Gather all of your hair into a high ponytail.
  2. Loop your locks through an elastic of your choice, creating a messy top bun. Make sure you leave the ends of the loose strands out and in the front!
  3. Divide the bun in half from the middle.
  4. Gather all of the loose ends into one small section and pull them directly back behind the bun.
  5. Pin the bow together with bobby pins as needed.

All of these hairstyles will have you strutting across campus with confidence; they’re chic, trendy and selfie-worthy. Whether you’re heading out on a date, going to class or hanging out with the girls, give one of these HC-approved looks a shot!
