Trojan Condoms Ranked the Most Sexually Healthy Colleges in America

How accessible are sexual health services on your campus? Trojan Condoms has just published its 10th annual ranking of the most sexually healthy colleges in the U.S., and Oregon State University has taken the top spot for the second year in a row.

Schools are “graded” on a 4.0 scale, like a GPA. 140 schools were surveyed on such categories as quality of sexual health and information resources, contraception availability (and its cost), availability of STI testing, outreach programs, sexual assault resources, hours of operation and allowing walk-in appointments. The average score among all schools surveyed was 3.0—up from 1.9 when the survey first began in 2006. The study found that, overall, schools are making positive progress in improving resources for students.

“With an unparalleled network of enthusiastic student peer groups with interesting and engaging programs, Oregon State University is a leader in campus sexual health resources,” said Bert Sperling, president of Sperling’s BestPlaces, who conducted the survey, said of the top-ranked school. “The school’s dedication to improving its offerings to students allows it to come out on top of the rankings for the second year in a row.”

The school with the biggest jump was the University of Utah, moving up 43 spots from last year to no. 59. While Columbia University dropped to eighth place from the second spot last year, this is its eighth consecutive year in the top ten—the most of any other school surveyed.

You can check out the complete list here. Was your school surveyed? If not, how do you think it would have fared?

High School Principal Writes Extremely Sexist Letter About Dress Codes

Certain dress codes can be sexist or unfair toward women. After editors of MLive.com wrote an editorial adressing this, the principal of Plymouth Christian High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan wrote a surprising response.

Jim Bazen, the principal, states in his letter that schools should enforce a modest dress code for girls in order to prevent boys from sexualizing them.

Bazen explains that men are visual and therefore can't help but treat women as "sex objects." He is placing all the blame on these young women.

"The only way you can help young men not treat young ladies as sex objects is by telling the young ladies to cover up!" he says. Or, you could educate them about the proper way to treat people—which seems like a better idea to us.

After explaining his reasoning, Bazen goes on to say that he doesn't want these young women getting pregnant and losing their virginities.

"We would like them to preserve this wonderful gift (virginity) for their 'one and only,'" he says. Whether Bazen is basing his ideas off his religion or other matters, it's disrespectful for him to think he should have a say in his high school students' sexual lives.

Seventeen reports that his letter has caused backlash among other organizations in Michigan. We aren't surprised.

People.com talked to Lori Carpenter, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, who disagreed with Bazen.

"The best way for young people—male or female—to protect their virginity, is to learn how to set their own boundaries and to respect the boundaries of others," she told the magazine.

Dress code or not, Bazen should reevaluate the way he frames his point. It's not a woman's fault if a guy looks at her as a "sex object"—Respect, education and communication are way more effective than policing what anyone's wearing.

Even Barbie is Quitting Social Media

In a week that has seen quite its fair share of social media scrutiny, Socality Barbie—or Hipster Barbie, as her friends and 1.3 million followers like to call her—has announced she’s leaving that Insta-life behind.

Australian model and Instagram sensation Essena O’Neill earned praise earlier this week when she admitted the fake narrative that dominated her feed, sharing the real circumstances behind some of her most-liked posts. What’s surprising is Socality Barbie gained notoriety for satirizing that exact effortless-on-the-surface, overworked IRL approach to social media. Her account skyrocketed when she arrived on the scene just six months ago, and we’ve been glued to her feed ever since. We mean, have you ever seen anything better than this “nature-inspired” post?

Barbie’s once anonymous puppeteer, Darby Cisneros, has come forward to explain why she decided to shut down the account: “I had never intended on it being a long term project. I wanted to use it as my own outlet to say things about social media that I always wanted to say. I said all I wanted to say with SB.” And though we’ll miss Barbie’s fresh take on the “authentic” side of Instagram, we’ll take this as yet another sign that we should get real or get packing on social media.

Here's the Latest Happenings Among the GOP Candidates

$

With the incredible plethora of candidates in the Presidential primaries, it can be difficult to keep up with what’s happening. Here’s a quick rundown of the latest happenings in GOP land:

Chris Christie, once considered to be one of the nation’s most popular governors and a front runner for the GOP nomination until his fall from grace after the Bridgegate scandal, was having a pretty decent week, the Daily Beast reports. His poll numbers were just starting to go up in New Hampshire after a strong last debate performance, and an emotional video about drug addiction he released through the Huffington Post had just gone viral.

Then, last night, Fox Business dropped the bomb and announced Christie has been cut from appearing in the primetime debate next week because of low poll numbers. He was about half a percent below the required 2.5 percent required.

He will now take the stage at 7 p.m. Nov. 10th, alongside other once-top tier candidates Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and Bobby Jindal. Though it is possible for candidates who start out in the undercard debate to graduate to primetime (a la Carly Fiorina), no candidate who has been demoted has ever gone on to win the GOP nomination.

Meanwhile, Ohio governor, GOP candidate and increasingly notorious sexist John Kasich struck again at a town hall debate in Iowa with a bizarre response to a question from a woman in the audience about government corruption and lobbyists.

"Have you ever been on a diet?" Kasich said to her. "Many times," she responded. He then said: "Well, you're the perfect example."

"Have you ever been on a diet?" Because, obviously, the only way a woman could understand the complexities of government issues is to use a metaphor for one of the many ways in she is reduced to her appearance.

This isn’t the first time Kasich has disrespected a woman during an appearance. Last month, while Kasich was speaking at the University of Richmond, 18-year-old student Kayla Solsbak raised her hand to ask a question. “I'm sorry, I don't have any Taylor Swift concert tickets,” he said to her. Solsbak was not amused, and wrote this awesome op-ed for her school paper, the Collegian, in response.

In response to a request for comment from Mic about the incident in Iowa, Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols gave this statement:

“America's $18 trillion national debt is a serious issue that threatens our nation's future prosperity, and for the young people who read Mic, their share of that debt is $57,000 per person. The governor frequently poses that question to audiences — not to individuals as was inaccurately suggested — to bring home the need for us to stand up and call on the federal government to rein-in its spending. Unless we do that now the opportunities for younger Americans will be negatively impacted. That's not the future he wants for his own teenagers or for any of America's young people."

He totally evaded the issue at hand, which is usually a telltale sign that he has no good explanation at all for such ridiculous behavior.

17 Signs You're a Film & Media Major

$

In this day and age of advanced technology and social media, film and media majors have a reason to celebrate. In case you're not sure you fit the part, here are 17 signs you're a film and media major.

1. Your shoulders are sore from constantly trekking heavy equipment around campus.

Equipment is clunky, chunky and heavy. If you're not the most graceful future cinematographer, expect to take a few tumbles through the quad.

2. You own a trunk of statement scarves and ironic T-shirts alluding to obscure entertainment references.

Everyone has their signature. Allen and his glasses. Varda and her bob. Scorsese and his brows. Until you figure out yours, a stylish scarf should do the trick. Plus, it's great for throwing over your shoulder in a dramatic exit.

3. Your Facebook page is mostly links to your GoFundMe profile.

Ahh, yes. The livelihood of the average college student is built on the kindness of others, but add paying for supplies, software and food on set? Looks like you'll be making some long overdue calls to Aunt Linda and Uncle Jerry.

4. Visible wall space does not exist in your dorm because of all the movie posters.

Creative minds work best in a space that conforms to their thoughts. At least, that's what you tell guests when they get ambushed by retro movie posters falling off your walls and life-size cutouts of famous actors.

5. When awards season rolls around, you invite everyone to your viewing party.

'Tis a joyous day for all, but none more so than you. Pop the champagne, bring on the popcorn and let's get this party started!

6. When your picks for the Oscars and Emmys don't win, you refuse to speak to anyone for 24 hours.

No one beats Meryl. NO ONE. You just need a second, or a day or two weeks to calm down.

7. Your closet has slowly but surely transitioned from a variety of colors to a wave of black, white and neutral tones.

It's all about the now, darling, and right now, you do not need the creative expression of your work being upstaged by some gawdy outfit.

8. Group projects are both the bane of your existence and the best thing to happen to you.

Your vision is the most important thing to you during the creative process. Your group members' execution of said vision will either make or break the project. But when you find a group of collaborators who just get you, those are bonds to last a lifetime.

9. You are the queen of social media. Your Instagram's aesthetic cannot be touched.

Your feed is so cohesive followers instantly recognize one of your posts. Whether it's a boot next to a trash can or some hummus and pretzels, your Instas are ART.

10. When your friends need a new profile picture, you're on it with an extra battery just in case the photo shoot runs overtime.

You're a tiger. A ferocious tiger. Now you're a mermaid in a pool of serenity. Oh, the things you say to get your friends those 100+ likes.

11. Even though you don't speak a word of German or French, you're a regular at the local theatre's weekly international film night.

Subtitles or not, if the cinematography is timeless, all you need to understand is how the director of photography achieved such a sweet hair light.

12. People who don't know you think you're artsy and mysterious, but your friends realize that you're an absolute goofball.

You like to play it cool and be taken seriously as an artist, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. You may be a fan of the classics, but nothing is better than a Spongebob marathon.

13. You fear that people will find your childhood Youtube page.

Things happened in middle school that you would rather forget. Your "early work" may not have been the best.

14. No one is stung like you when great TV shows are canceled or end on Netflix.

It's just not fair when quality work is not appreciated. Yet, somehow, Toddlers & Tiaras is still a thing.

15. You often go missing for hours until your roommate realizes that you're in the studio editing on Final Cut.

When you need to escape to work on a project, human contact may be out of the question for hours on end.

16. Nothing grinds your gears like when a new movie or TV show is released and you swear you had that idea first.

You totally had a student film about a professor having to turn to drugs in order to sustain his family. Walter White was yours.

17. You have a looming fear of what's in store for your future, but it doesn't come close to the overwhelming knowledge that you will be successful in this industry.

Being a film and media major is extremely rewarding, challenging and uncertain. But one thing is clear: you do the work, you will succeed.

Bathroom Fears Block Anti-Discrimination Ordinance in Houston

$
0
0

The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance was supposed to prevent wide-spread discrimination based on race, age, military status, sexual orientation and gender identity, but the majority of Houstonians voted against this ordinance to “protect women.”

This ordinance did not include religious institutions, but that did not prevent from Houston pastors from condemning this ordinance

“It opens up our city and in short order all of the metropolitan area of Houston to something that I think is absolutely godless,” Ed Young, a pastor in Houston, said about the ordinance. “It is totally deceptive, and it is deadly."

Although the word “bathroom” is not mentioned a single time in the ordinance even in the public accommodations section, people were concerned that this bill would allow men to use the women’s restroom, which could result in assault or danger for women. This fear was placed into the Houstonians' head from the smear campaign that was plastered all over Houston. The campaign effectively transformed this ordinance of protection against discrimination for many different classes of people through transphobic propaganda.

"If I understand, part is about picking the restroom you want," Sharome Robinson, a police officer in Houston, told Buzzfeed. "I am a police officer, so males entering the restrooms, that does not sit well with me. It’s not legal now, but it still happens. People follow kids into bathrooms and assault them today. But if this passes, who would have the authority to stop them? If there is no longer any rule against it, who can question that person?”

The dialogue about this bill focused on the absurd claim that this ordinance will somehow result in pedophiles being in women’s restrooms. Opponents of the ordinances used fear mongering to support their agenda, while ironically asserting that the mayor of Houston, Annise Parker who is the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city, is trying to pass this ordinance to support “the gay agenda.” But maybe gay agenda is some people’s version of equal rights?

The ordinance was named the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, or HERO for short, but opponents of this ordinance named it “The Bathroom Ordinance.” Signs were plastered all over Houston that read “NO Men in Women’s Bathrooms!”

There was even an advertisement that was sponsored by the Campaign for Houston in which a young girl was cornered by a creepy man in a bathroom stall while a narrator says “protect women’s privacy, prevent danger.” This ad ran on Houston TV stations.

The ad opens up by saying that "any man, any time" could enter into the women's restroom just because the person claims to be a woman on that particular day. In reality, nowhere in this bill was it said that men were allowed to enter the women’s restroom.

The video then goes on to say that registered sex offenders could follow women and young girls into the restroom, and "if a business tries to stop them, they'd be fined." Again, wrong. Going into a bathroom with the intent to harass or assault women would still be illegal.

As a result,  61 percent of Houstonian voters opposed the bill, which makes Houston, the fourth-largest city in the U.S., one of the largest cities to not have an ordinance that protects against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The tactic that the anti-HERO campaign was based off of is the bathroom myth. This myth perpetuates the idea that letting transgender people use the bathroom that they identify with is somehow dangerous. Carlos Maza from Media Matters has disprooven that trans-inclusive bathrooms result in sexual predators' access to the women's bathroom

Because the anti-LGBTQ+ group has no other grounds to oppose the ordinance other than their own ignorance, the bathroom myth will unfortunately likely remain as a last hope to block anti-discrimination ordinances like this one from passing.

Pia Mia's Music Video Was Worth the Wait

Following the the rave reviews Pia Mia received with Chris Brown and Tyga on their pop hit “Do it Again” over the summer, we are happy to report that the songstress has returned to impress everyone again with her new single “Touch.” This time around, she is appearing solo, which is something we could get used to, if we’re being honest.

Just yesterday, we were treated to the release of the music video and it was certainly worth the wait. While the pop singer struts and dances throughout the three-and-a-half-minute music video, we also get to see a softer side of her with lyrics such as “Every now and then I get a little lonely” and “I can hold myself but no its not the same thing.”

Check out the catchy tune below!

How to Make Your Own Personalized Mug

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Freckles & Olives by Hannah & Anastasia, Her Campus Blogger Network members. Read the full post here.

Even if you don't drink coffee, mugs are still awesome. They always give you that sense of peace and comfort... especially on those mornings you're up too early after a late night out. When you're half asleep, sipping from a personalized mug is good start to the day. These DIY mugs are super easy (and cheap!) to make—plus, they make meaningful gifts so it's a win-win. Here's how to make your own.

You will need:

  • Sharpie paint pens (make sure they're oil based)
  • A mug—cheaper ones work best because their surface is more malleable
  • A pencil and a fine point Sharpie (optional but recommended)
  • Tape (optional)

Step One: Wash & dry your mug. Pick the design you want on your mug and apply tape if necessary.

Step Two: Trace your design onto your mug if it includes lines, words, or a certain image. Pro-tip: If pencils aren't working for you use a fine point regular Sharpie so it shows up.

Step Three: Grab your paint pens and draw in your designs (remove tape if applicable). Be wary of smudging. You can use toothpicks to get rid of your mistakes and create sharper lines. Add accent colors (if you want).

Rachel Dolezal Finally Admitted She Was Born White

Do you remember that huge scandal from earlier this year when it was revealed that Rachel Dolezal, president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP, is actually white? After her estranged biological parents (who are white) outed her true identity, she revealed in an interview with Matt Lauer on Today that she has identified as black since she was five years old.

"I was drawing self-portraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon, and black curly hair," she said. Dolezal always evaded questions about her background and birth family.

Now, she’s finally speaking out again and admitting she was “born white.” In an appearance on the talk show The Real—hosted by five women of color—Dolezal said: "I acknowledge that I was biologically born white to white parents, but I identify as Black."

Granted, we all knew this the whole time, but this is the first time she herself has outright admitted it.  There was apparent tension between Dolezal and the hosts, who pointed out that she took opportunities away from black women by claiming a black identity.

The story has spurred a lot of interesting discussion about the identity we’re born with versus how we self-identify. Many believe that Dolezal’s claiming to be African American is a form of blackface, and that she does not understand the true struggles of growing up as a minority in America. Others have been left wondering whether it is possible to be transracial. What do you think?

The Price of Girl Scout Cookies is Increasing

Girl Scout cookie lovers, we have some bad news—The price of each box may be going up by $1.

According to CBS News, Girl Scout chapters in Massachusetts, California and Hawaii are the first chapters to accounce the price increase in the cookies—Boxes are now $5 each. The price increase is due to increased production costs of the cookies.

The raise in prices would allow chapters to make about 30 cents more profit per box than before, Cosmopolitan reports

Although some people said they wouldn't buy the cookies if they were $5 a box, others said they'd still remain loyal. Luckily, only three states have announced an increase in price so far.

Would you support the Girl Scouts by buying $5 boxes of cookies? Is getting your Thin Mints worth it?

Your Go-To Guide to Great Eyebrows

$
0
0

What do Lucy Hale, Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins have in common? Gorgeous eyebrows! Ask any makeup artist: brows can make or break your face. Read on for grooming tips and how to deal with too-thin or overly bushy eyebrows. We talked to Baltimore-based makeup artist Rachel Lew for the lowdown on eyebrows.

1. Pick a shape

What’s the coolest, chicest way to do eyebrows these days? Keep them natural! “Most women tend to match best with their natural eyebrow shape, which is usually along the lines of naturally full and slightly arched,” Lew says. Translation: don’t fight your eyebrows! Where the hair tends to grow is probably a good look.

But, depending on your face shape, you may find a different shape looks better. “If you have a rounder face, you can get away with a stronger arch,” Lew says. “If you have a square face shape, stick with a softer arch. If you have an oval face, a medium arch will suit you.”

Not sure what shape your face is? Stand in front of a mirror, comb your hair back and get a good look at your hairline. Then, check out this guide to properly determine your face shape. When in doubt, though, keep what nature gave you and don’t worry too much about calculating exactly where the perfect arch should be.

2. Tweeze them

Feel free to cancel your waxing appointment. Unless you’re on Frida Kahlo’s level, quality tweezers will do just fine, since you’re just going to clean up what you already have.

“It's important to invest in a good quality tweezer; otherwise, you risk getting dull ends that make it difficult to pinpoint and pull out specific brow hairs,” Lew says. Lew recommends Tweezerman tweezers—their basic slant tweezer is $22 at Sephora.

Start by pulling out the hairs that are very obviously straying from the others far above or below your natural shape, as well as those and between your eyebrows (to avoid a unibrow). Then, go in and pluck around your natural shape. You probably already have an arch, but if you want to make it more defined, a good frame of reference is to put the arch above where the iris of your eye ends.

“Keep the shape clean, but don't over-tweeze them!” Lew warns. You’ll know you’ve over-tweezed if your brow hairs are sparse and you can see a lot of skin between hairs. To avoid this, Lew recommends not getting too close to the mirror. “Look at your entire face from time to time while you're tweezing,” she says. “If you're overdone it, no worries! You can fake it with a brow pencil until it grows back.”

3. Trim them (if you need to)

Super-bushy eyebrows may benefit from a slight trim. Lew recommends starting with a “spooley,” which is the word for the makeup brush that looks like a mascara wand, just without the mascara. Brush your brows upward toward your forehead. Then, if you see any hairs that extend far past the top of your eyebrow, trim them slightly with a pair of hair or eyebrow scissors.

This should be a last resort, though. Only trim if it’s absolutely necessary! “If you over-trim, your eyebrows can easily look uneven,” Lew says. Prevent this by just snipping off the tips of hairs that extend far past the spooley when you comb them toward your forehead.

4. Fill them in

This step definitely applies to those with naturally sparser eyebrows, but even girls with thick eyebrows can up the ante by filling theirs in a bit. That’s the key to the Cara look! First, “set your brows with a clear brow gel (or clear mascara!), which keeps your brow hairs in place,” Lew says. Lew suggests Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel ($22 at Sephora).

The next step you take depends on your natural eyebrow thickness. Girls with thin eyebrows, take note: Filling in your brows can either look super unnatural or very polished, so take caution. “The trick is to fill them in to make them look as natural as possible by using your existing eyebrow,” Lew says. “A brow powder is your best bet if you want natural-looking brows, but if you're looking for more definition, a pencil or brow gel will get the job done.”

Try Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow ($22 at Sephora) for a brow gel that’s super easy to apply since it has a built-in brush you can use directly on your brows. For brow pencils, Lew suggests tarte EmphasEYES High Definition Eyebrow Pencil ($20 at Sephora) for its precise tip. For thicker, more intensely colored brows, Lew recommends Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW Pomade ($18 at Sephora). Apply it in light, feathery strokes.

Lew suggests picking a gel or pencil color that’s slightly lighter than your natural hair or eyebrow color. “For example, if you have dark brown hair, you want to use taupe or a medium brown to fill in your brows,” she says. If you decide to keep it super subtle, use a powder and then “use thin, feathery strokes with a brow brush (find one a with a fine tip) to fill in your brows,” Lew says. Want to be a bit darker and dramatic à la Lily Collins? Pick a pencil or gel and use the same motion—thin, feathery strokes. The last thing you want is to look like you just colored in the lines with a crayon! Finish your look with some eyeliner to complement your bold brows.

Cool, sexy brows take a bit more work than going completely au naturel, but if you keep them in shape and fill them in a bit, you might be surprised by how much your eyebrows define and brighten your face!

So, you just got back to your apartment and are getting ready for a night out—and it's not until you need shaving cream that you remember you ran out last week. Oops. So what do you do?

Fortunately, most of our beauty essentials can be replaced by other products when you're stuck in a rut. The beauty hacks below will show you how to get away with looking your best, even when you've run out of your favorite products!

You're Out Of: Blush or Cheek Stain
Try: Lipstick

A quality lipstick is a fabulous asset to your cosmetic bag and works in multiple ways. Make your own cream blush by applying it to the back of your hand, then warming it up with your finger before dabbing it onto the apples of your cheeks. Use a different finger to blend the product upward for an even, natural-looking finish.

You're Out Of: Shaving Cream
Try: Hair Conditioner

When you find yourself out of shaving cream last minute, solve the problem quickly by applying some of your hair conditioner to the area that needs attention for the perfect substitute. Hair conditioner can dull the blade of your razor a bit sooner than traditional shaving cream, so be aware of this if you plan on permanently using hair conditioner as a shaving cream substitute. On the bright side, its thick, rich texture will help protect your skin and makes your hair softer.

You're Out Of: Makeup Remover
Try: Olive Oil

Just like olive oil is good for your body, it's excellent for your skin as well. The healthy fats it contains helps to plumps and moisturizes your skin, while the antioxidants will assist in fighting free radicals, which will slow the aging process of your complexion. Plus, it's eco-friendly and budget-friendly. Score!

You're Out Of: Leave-In Conditioner
Try: DIY Leave-In Conditioner (Using Conditioner & Water)

Having a bottle of pre-packaged, name brand leave-in conditioner is clutch, but sometimes the product runs out at the worst timepossible. Fix your problem quickly by combining some of your regular conditioner with water in a spray bottle, and spray the product onto your ends as desired.

You're Out Of: Toner
Try: Apple Cider Vinegar

Using toner after cleansing your skin and before moisturizing works wonders for absorbing any excess oil your skin may have produced. It also helps to clarify your skin and clear off anything you may have missed when rinsing your face clean. Apple cider vinegar is an awesome purifying agent that works as an astringent, so use it as a toner, especially along your T-zone if you're prone to acne to help prevent breakouts.

You're Out Of: Blotting Papers
Try: Coffee Filters

Since they're made with similar ingredients as packaged blotting papers, coffee filters are an easy way to absorb any excess oil from your skin to reduce shine. While traveling, you can also use the disposable toilet seat covers some public restrooms provide, as they're another on-the-go blotting paper substitute.

We all mourned when we heard that America's Next Top Model was going off the air. After all, we pretty much grew up with the show—we were there for every Ty-over, all of Miss J's memorable moments and of course, the epic episode where Tyra schooled Tiffany. But it looks like all hope is not lost—America's Next Top Model might make it back to the top of our queues again.

We're going to assume this is (at least in part) Tyra's doing—after all, she's not the type to take no for an answer. According to DeadlineTop Model is being pitched to cable and streaming platforms—and seeing as re-runs on TV as well as season on Netflix and Hulu have reportedly performed well, this certainly isn't a bad move. Here's to hoping this actually happens—we're not sure we're ready to say goodbye to Tyra's fierceness just yet.
