5 Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

$

Push aside those classic autumn oranges and browns in your wardrobe, because October is turning pink! As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, a number of charities are finding more ways to get people talking about breast cancer and raising money for research–and they do it in style. This year, there are more ways than ever to show your support. Whether it’s adding a pink ribbon to your outfit or registering for a road race, here are the best ways to get involved.

1. Wear Pink With Pride

The key to any girl’s heart is the perfect shade of pink. So step it up this month! Buying or wearing pink ribbon merchandise is a great way to start spreading the word about breast cancer awareness. Several charities sell merchandise for which the proceeds go to breast cancer research, so check them out!

The Susan G. Komen online shop is a great source for cute pink products. From workout tees and totes to luggage tags and iPhone cases, you can find all the merchandise you’d ever want.

You can find more pink gear here, here and here. Find your favorite shade and start spreading awareness about breast cancer and supporting survivors!

2. Cheer on Your Favorite NFL Team

For those collegiettes with a sporty side, the NFL offers an easy way to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The NFL’s campaign called “A Crucial Catch” is a partnership with the American Cancer Society that is focused on the importance of annual breast screenings.

For the next month, NFL games will feature players, coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel; on-field pink ribbon stencils; special game balls and pink coins - all to help raise awareness. Then, the apparel worn by players will be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society.

You can also show your support buy getting some NFL Breast Cancer Awareness gear here—part of the proceeds will go towards breast cancer research. These pieces are perfect for a tailgate or a comfy afternoon in your dorm!

3. Get Active

2007 Susan G. Komen St. Louise Race For The Cure

Running or walking a 5K is a great way to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or you rarely leave the couch, having a good cause to motivate you during a run can be the inspiration you need to make it through a race. You can run your hardest or take it easy—it’s the thought that counts.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has locations all over the country during October. Just register for one near you early in the month, get others to sponsor your race, and complete the 3.1-mile course. Every participant receives a Race for the Cure T-shirt. Breast cancer survivors are celebrated during the race and every dollar raised is donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

4. Get Really Active

For the more adventurous go-getters, there are longer-distance events for you! The Susan G. Komen Marathon for the Cure offers runners the chance to join in the fight against breast cancer by running or walking a full or half marathon. There are also various two-day-long walks to raise money for breast cancer research institutes. Avon sponsors a 39-mile (60 km) walk, and a walk in Atlanta offers varying lengths of up to 30 miles.

5. Know the Basics so You Can Be Aware

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 230,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The best way to support the cause is to take step towards better understanding the disease. Visit a website like the National Breast Cancer Foundation or Breastcancer.org, or stop by an information booth while at an event and learn the basic facts, warning signs and treatment.

You could also go to your campus health center and learn how to give yourself a breast self-exam. I AM THE CURE is a breast health program that motivates people to take action steps that may reduce their risk of breast cancer. They encourage everyone to make a “curemitment,” or a commitment, goal or promise to take steps to reduce your risk of breast cancer. Make your own curemitment!

While there are plenty of fall-themed activities out there, add a breast cancer awareness event to your to-do list this October. It’s the perfect time for all collegiettes to get involved. So load up on some adorable pink apparel, sign up for a race nearby and show your support for breast cancer awareness!

You Can Now Have Christmas Dinner at Hogwarts

Anytime the names “Harry Potter” or J.K. Rowling pop up, we automatically lose it at the thought of learning more about our favorite wizarding world, even if we can never really hang out at Hogwarts—or can we?

According to Seventeen, the Warner Brothers Studio in London is hosting a Christmas dinner right in the replica of Hogwarts’ Great Hall, surrounded by the props shown in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Guests will receive their very own complimentary wand at dinner, in addition to dessert served at Platform 9 ¾ and butterbeer at a café. After the grand feast, guests get to have a wizarding world dance party!

Mashable reports that tickets for the December 3rd “Dinner in the Great Hall” cost £230 ($349), but unfortunately they are all sold out (which is, not surprising).

Though this opportunity was missed, those in the states still have the Universal Studios theme parks, with exact representations of the castles, Diagon Alley and the works to fawn over, as well as an exclusive celebration to look forward to in January 2016. Harry Potter fever never really goes away, does it?

Real Live College Guy: Can My Relationship Go the Distance?

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you're stressed about a fling gone wrong, a wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Mark is here to help you navigate the college dating scene!

I have been "dating" this guy from home for about three and a half months. This isn't the first time we have been talking but it is the first time we are serious about it. We say "I love you" and saw each other just about every night all summer. Next week we both go back to college and are five hours apart. We both have cars and if we both make the effort I think it could work. He says he is going to visit and we will still talk, but even at home he isn't great with his phone. I am worried that once we’re at school, communication will lack and he will forget about the amazing summer we had. I am a romantic and totally think that this could work but I'm worried that even if he says he wants to be with me he may not mean it. Do you think a long distance relationship is possible? – Going the Distance

Going the Distance,

Yes, I do believe long distance relationships are capable of working—ONLY if it's a team effort. It wouldn't be fair if you are the only one investing your time in this relationship and he isn't. If he's already bad with his phone now, then it could become worse once he's back at school.

People say a lot of things like they’ll be there for you when they leave or they love you. These can just be temporary for that summer break and when summer’s over, it’s back to reality for them. Clearly you two have tried this "relationship" thing before but only you were giving it 110 percent and being serious about being in it for the long haul. Usually during the summer, people tend to look for a summer fling—someone to have around and get attention from. You should also keep in mind that this can be a lot for him as well. There’s a lot probably going on in his head about how he’s going to make this work long distance and it’s something new for the both of you. I say don’t give up so easily, but don’t stick around if nothing’s changing either.

13 Signs You're a Communications Major

$

Communications is probably one of the most interesting majors (we might be a little biased), and being a Comm major is an amazing experience. You get the best of both worlds—you get an education while studying modern pop culture. Being a Comm major comes with some baggage, though; tons of people misunderstand what the world of Communications is really about. However, what really matters is how you feel about it yourself. If these statements summarize your life, then you're basically meant to be a Comm major.

1. Buzzfeed is your life.

2. You have an account on every social media outlet known to man.

3. You analyze every detail of reality TV shows.

4. Becoming Miranda Priestly is your life goal.

5. Taking math or science classes bores you to the max.

6. Your homework typically involves watching some kind of television show.

7. You’ve spent way too much time explaining to people that “Communications” doesn’t mean pubic speaking.

8. While your friends are writing papers on stem cells and world wars, your papers consist of analyzing the Kardashians or questioning the effects of social media on society.

9. You've had the sender-receiver model drilled into your brain.

10. Your friends always say, “I wish my major was as easy as yours!”

11. When you tell people about your major, you’re often met with some “comforting” responses, such as, “How will that get you a job?”

12. The amount of marketing and outreach organizations that you belong to is insane.

13. You absolutely adore your major!

How it Feels to Be a Broke College Student

$

Times are tough, and as a college student, your money is probably pretty tight.

When you’re out on the town, you always keep your eyes peeled for discounted drinks.

You make sure to pregame (hard)…

…and you always keep your fingers crossed that someone will be feeling inclined to buy you a couple rounds.

Cover charges? You don’t think so!

You’ve noticed that your taste in cuisine is becoming decreasingly sophisticated.

Fancy restaurants aren’t exactly in your budget anymore.

Unless, of course, there’s a special offer involved.

You always go to the campus events that say they’ll provide snacks.

There’s no better way to entice you to attend a meeting than with the promise of food.

Really, anytime “free” stuff is involved, you’re there.

This is your dinner on a normal night:

Unless, of course, you feel like splurging:

When it comes to beauty products, you’re totally done with those brand names.

Shampoo is still shampoo after all, right?

Whenever your friends suggest a shopping trip, you die a little inside.

This is how you feel walking by clothing store windows:

And then there’s the moment when you’re forced to check your bank account balance.

Though most of the time you feel like this could become you at any moment…

…at least you have the comfort of knowing that in college, you’re not alone.

6 Ways to Make Your Ponytail More Interesting

As every hardworking collegiette knows, sometimes all you have time for is a quick pony before you head out the door. Feeling like that ponytail is lacking in the style department? Look no further, ladies—we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to take your updo from drab to fab!

Add a braid

Braids: they're easy to do and adorable to look at. When opting for a low pony, add a braid to one or both sides of your part for an easy touch of sophistication that looks effortless!

Rock a bow

Bows are both adorable and versatile! No matter your personal style, it is guaranteed that you can find a size, pattern or color that best caters to you! They are a stress-free way to dress up any pony in just a matter of seconds.

Break out a bandana

It might've been a while since you last wore a bandana, but it's time to pull it back out! Rock one with your workout attire or your cute fall outfit—either way, you cannot go wrong.

Style a half-Up, half-down bun

Do you have greasy roots, but don't want to wear your hair all the way up? We have a solution that is super trendy right now: the half-up, half-down bun. This style takes five minutes at the most and will have you looking fab all day long.

Throw in a fishtail

Add a fishtail to onlya portion of your pony to give it that little something extra; trust us, you will have heads turning!

Experiment with extra pieces

This unique style is perfect for anyone with long hair who is up for a challenge. Wrap sections of hair around various points of your pony for a truly one-of-a-kind look!

Some days, you just don't have the time or energy to do anything to your hair besides throw it up on. Fortunately, with a little experimentation, you can still make your updo totally chic and fabulous!

The Key to Finding Work-Life Balance

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from The College Girl Daily by Hannah-Beth Floyd, a Her Campus Blogger Network member. Read the full post here.

I’m definitely a workaholic; I've got three jobs and a blog that publishes six times a week. I’ve started treating my blog like a business, which is what I hope for it to be eventually. My problem is there’s always something I could be doing, whether that’s writing a new post or interacting with followers. That means almost every moment of my free time is dedicated to blogging.

So here I am, trying to find a work-life balance, all while I’m so overrun with school work I can't even think about relaxation.

Here are some tips for finding work life balance:

1. Schedule everything

I've been using Google Calendar to keep up with my various shifts at work and the things I want to take care of around the apartment. I'm even color coding to match my planner. For example, I use yellow for my retail job, purple for my internship, green for my newspaper job, pink for my blog and blue for personal stuff. By scheduling everything I make sure to make time for the big stuff, like work, and the small stuff, like posting to Instagram.

2. Make time for fun

I've found it's important to schedule in time to spend with my family and boyfriend. Fun doesn't have to be a big vacation; it can be something as simple as spending the afternoon outside with the people you love.

3. Learn to say no

Don't feel the need to say yes to every single social event you're invited to. If you feel your energy is sapped from spending all day on campus, then it's ok to just go home and veg out. If you know you're already stretched thin, don't offer up your (very) valuable free time.

US Falls Behind in World University Rankings

Many students from around the world choose to come to the U.S. for college in order to get a high-quality education. But before you start feeling good about yourself, consider this bit of information: according to this year's Times Higher Education's annual ranking, the U.S. isn't doing as hot as it used to be when it comes to college.

That's right—Out of the top 200 colleges around the globe on the list, America only claims 63 schools on the list, down from 74 just last year. Meanwhile, countries such as Germany and the Netherlands have gained spots. Rankings editor Phil Baty commented on the U.S.'s fall in the rankings, noting that since the 2008 recession, 47 states have issued some sort of cuts to higher education funding. In other words, America shouldn't get too comfortable with their title as college hotspot of the world.

But just in case you're not totally put off by that revelation, here's a list of the top 10 contenders.

Top 10

The reason for our slip in prestige could have to do with how often students follow this mantra:

But hey, what can we say? Sometimes it just feels like life is too short for class!

We're all guilty of feeling attached to our phones and not wanting to miss anything on social media—but a new study brings our phone obsessions to a whole different level. Phubbing, or phone snubbing, is becoming a serious issue, specifically in relationships.

The results of the study concluded that when people feel snubbed by their partner's phone, which 43.6 percent of people did, it can lead to unhappiness and even depression. Keeping your phone with you at all times or checking it when there's a pause in conversation are habits of phubbers. These actions may not seem like a big deal and may even feel natural, but 22.6 percent of people said it caused problems in their relationship.

You may want to start putting your phone away while you're with people, specifically your SO—Your health may even improve as well! Do an activity together sans-phones and you'll likely feel closer as a result.

Has your relationship been affected by phone snubbing, collegiettes? How did you fix it?

How to Throw the Best Halloween Party This Year

$
0
0

You may have stopped going trick-or-treating when you started middle school, but in college, Halloween is exciting again! Sure, there are theme parties on campus every weekend of the year, but nothing beats an awesome Halloween party. If you're thinking about throwing a soirée of your own but aren't sure how to start planning,

Choose a specific theme

Get creative

Think about the kind of Halloween you and your roommates want to have. Do you want everyone to come dressed as a Disney character or a superhero? Would you prefer something traditionally scary, like having everyone in zombie or vampire costumes? Think about what kind of party you want it to be and that will help you figure out your theme! If your friends are into more nontraditional Halloween costumes, suggest a theme that will let them show their creative sides. Throw a Lady Gaga-themed Monster Ball with everyone wearing their favorite Gaga outfit, or have everyone dress up as characters from a popular TV show or movie. You can still use Halloween decorations and music, but if everyone’s sticking to a common theme, the party will be more cohesive and way more fun!

Or go traditional

If you and your roommates just want to let your guests have total creative freedom, don't assign a costume-based theme—just pick decorations and music that set the mood and really make you excited to celebrate Halloween!

Use decorations to set the mood

No party is complete without decorations, so stock up on fun Halloween supplies.

Don’t forget the basics

Orange and black plates, cups, napkins and cutlery are must-buys, as are some festive tablecloths and streamers.

Add a few extras

Party favors like eyeball erasers and tiny pumpkins make great table decorations. Spider web decorations and skeleton light strings (you can find these and similar pieces at most party supply stores) will take your party to a new level of fun.

It’s not Halloween without plenty of pumpkins

If you don’t know how to or don’t have the time to carve a pumpkin, use acrylic paints to make faces on a few pumpkins to set out around the house (you can buy pumpkins at most grocery stores in the fall).

Use some decorations outside, too

If you’re in a dorm or apartment, this can be a little tricky since you don’t want uninvited guests crashing your party, but even just a few cutout bats, spiders or tombstones will do the trick to get your guests in a party mood before they walk through the front door.

Go for classic activities with fun twists

Host a costume contest, but up the stakes

Have an incentive such as a gift card to your favorite local restaurant as prize—if there’s something to win, people will be more likely to go all out with their costumes. If a gift card seems excessive, a bag of candy will do the trick, too.

Bob for apples… or something else!

If bobbing for apples feels a bit stale, invent a new game, like eating gummy worms or gummy spiders (or any other Halloween candy) without your hands. It will be fun to watch and bring your party guests together.

Make up your own games

If you know your friends would be into a mummifying contest to see who can wrap each other with toilet paper first, go for it! The point of hosting a party is that it’s your own, so don’t be afraid to improvise and come up with your own activity ideas.

No party is complete without food

While you should definitely offer basics like soda and chips, put out some cute, Halloween-themed foods to add more fun to the party.

Choose classic Halloween cookies

We love sugar cookies with orange frosting and black sprinkles, but there are tons of other super easy options to choose from. The Pillsbury sugar cookies printed with ghosts and pumpkins are delicious, and all you have to do is slice and bake them. If you want to get more creative—think bat and cat cookies decorated with licorice and candy corn—Pillsbury has tons of recipes.

Or make your own Halloween cupcakes

Create your own Funfetti dough with Halloween sprinkles to bake festive cookies or cupcakes. Use candy pieces and sprinkles to decorate the cupcakes in Halloween style, like these adorable black cat cupcakes.

Go for tried-and-true Halloween foods like dirt pudding

You loved it when you were younger, and it still tastes just as good. Top chocolate pudding with crushed Oreos and gummy worms, and you’ll have an easy and delicious Halloween treat.

Take the pumpkin theme to a new level

You’re already using pumpkins as decorations, so why not serve pumpkin-themed foods, too? Pumpkin pie is always a safe bet, or be adventurous and use Dreyer’s/Edy’s Pumpkin Ice Cream (about $4 for a carton at most grocery stores) to make Halloween sundaes.

Don’t forget to set out some candy

Reese’s Pieces are a must since they’re Halloween colored, and gummies are festive, too. And, of course, you have to serve plenty of candy corn. Set out a few different options to keep everyone satisfied and add a variety of color to your table.

Don’t forget a killer playlist

If you’re going with a movie theme, you should definitely play a few memorable tracks from the soundtrack, but mix it up with Halloween songs, too. Halloween hits like “Monster Mash” and the Ghostbusters theme are musts, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box. There are tons of ‘80s and ‘90s songs that can be interpreted as Halloween hits—the cheesier, the better. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby. This song is great for an eerie party. Bonus points for the cheesy, faux spooky background noises.
  • “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult. The only prescription for an awesome party is… more cowbell! But seriously, could anything be more fitting of a Halloween party than something with “reaper” in the title?
  • “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon. This song is about werewolves. Need we say more?
  • “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC. This classic track is perfect for a holiday that originated from discussion of souls and the afterlife. “Hell’s Bells” is a great choice, too.
  • “Disturbia” by Rihanna. This is a classic party track with just the right amount of eeriness for a Halloween party.
  • “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. This song has a spooky vibe you can still dance to.
  • “Secret” by The Pierces. Whether or not you watch Pretty Little Liars, this song will send chills down your spine.
  • “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Even without a theme party, this song is a must (for obvious reasons).
  • “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. No Halloween party would be complete without this ‘80s hit. What’s even better than just playing the track? Learn the dance with your friends before the party and impress your guests with your awesome moves.

There you have it, collegiettes—now start planning your own Halloween parties! What are your Halloween plans?

A Coffee Shortage Could Be Coming for Your PSL

$
0
0

Coffee—that unofficial drink of colleges and universities around the world—might no longer be there for us when we have 8 a.m. class.

According to Cosmopolitan, there may be a shortage of coffee in the near future.

Due to the rise in coffee demand, 40 to 50 million extra bags of coffee will have to be produced globally in the next 10 years to prevent a shortage. Climate change has also been cited as a shortage reason, since rising temperatures will affect farms and can destroy almost a quarter of farmers’ output, particularly in Brazil, The Independent reports. In addition, recent coffee prices have been quite low, making it even harder for farmers to grow, produce and sell coffee beans. Climate change will also directly affect Arabica coffee beans, which Starbucks uses.

“Sooner or later, in months or years, we’ll have to make a bold decision about what to do. We don’t know where this coffee will come from,” Andrea Illy, the chairman and CEO of Illycafe told Bloomberg.

Bloomberg reports that solutions to combat the shortage were discussed by producers and government and industry reps at the Global Coffee Forum in Milan this week. And it seems as if farmers are already feeling the impact of increasing temperatures.

“I visit farms quite often, and the farms are always going higher in the mountains, higher in the mountains,” said Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nestle SA’s Nespresso, during a Global Coffee Forum panel. “Warming has a negative impact.”

So, if our GPAs begin to tank within the next year, lack of coffee will be a reasonable excuse, right?

What Your Favorite Drunk Food Says About You

$
0
0

One of the best things about drinking is getting to enjoy a greasy, calorie-laden meal at the end. Food has a way of making everything feel better, no matter how bad your drunken night may have been. Your favorite food choice can reveal a lot about you and we know exactly what it means!

Pizza

You’ve never met a person with more sass than you. People can sense your personality from a mile away and you wouldn’t have it any other way. You’ve been known to be a bit of a wild child, but your heart of gold always keeps you grounded. You’re extremely forward with your feeling, yet you’re away of those around you. You’re the best person to bring to parties or take on a spontaneous road trip because you always bring the fun.

Chocolate

You have a very classic personality and that’s what people love so much about you. You have exquisite taste and enjoy the finer things in life, which makes you the best shopping buddy. You always appear very put together, even though you may actually have two midterms today and only got three hours of sleep last night. You have an artistic flare that you don’t always let people see, but when they do get a glimpse of it they’re amazed at how talented you are. You are the definition of when people say "life goals."

Poutine

You don’t necessarily have to be Canadian to love this treat. You have a bold personality and definitely march to the beat of your own drum. You’re the type of person who doesn’t just follow trends, you set them. You’ve been known to be a bit eccentric, but that’s just because your personality is so electric. Friends always go to you for advice because they know you’ll say it as it is. You’re always up for adventures, no matter how crazy they may be, and that’s what makes you so fun to hang out with.

Burger and Fries

You’re as ambitious as they come. Your dreams are even bigger than the burger you ordered from Five Guys, and you know that nothing is going to stop you from achieving them. You have a traditional Type A personality, which makes you extremely detail-oriented, reliable and efficient. You keep yourself busy with extracurricular activities  and volunteering when you’re not busy studying for your next big exam. With that being said, you value your alone time so you can recharge your batteries in order to tackle your next big project. You’re determined and strong willed, and you know that you’re going places.

Nachos

You’re a social butterfly who can’t wait to share a big plate of nachos with her friends at the end of a long night. You have a very busy social calendar, but it’s only because you take advantage of every opportunity to make memories. You love being in the know about everything going on in your friend circle and are constantly updating your social media with what’s going on with you (including an Instagram pic of those yummy nachos). Everyone knows that you’re the one to invite if they want to have fun—whether that’s hitting the town or catching up on your favorite Netflix series.

Burritos

You know that you’re more of a listener than a talker, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have your own opinions. You’re strong-willed and love a good debate when it’s something your passionate about. You’re too busy with your life to waste time on things (or people) that aren’t worth it. You’re excellent at prioritizing and have no time for nonsense. Since you always listen to what other people have to say, you give the best advice in times of need. You’re wise beyond your years and everyone can’t wait to see how amazing your future turns out to be.

Ice Cream

Just like this treat, you’re sweet to the very last drop. You’re the self-proclaimed "mother" of your friend circle because you’re always watching out for others. You’re sensitive to other people’s emotions, which makes you both caring and friendly. In high school you were that person the teacher always asked to help show the new kid around. You’re dependable, genuine, and very detail-oriented. However, you do know how to let loose sometimes and you know you have the best moves on the dance floor. You’re the perfect combination of relaxed and spontaneous.

Chips

While you don’t get why everyone compares you to Amy Schumer, we totally get it. You’re a complete comedian who can make anyone laugh. Call it childish, but no matter how old we get, we’ll never get tired of crafting! Not only is it fun, but it makes for great (and inexpensive) dorm room décor. With Halloween right around the corner, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find some great DIY crafts to get our apartments and dorm rooms ready for October 31. Whether you want to prep for your own Halloween bash or just love DIY projects, check out these nine easy Halloween crafts you can complete in your dorm!

1. Candy Corn Mason Jars

What you need:

  • Orange, yellow and white spray paint
  • 3 Mason jars
  • Assorted black dyed faux flowers

Start out by spraying the entire Mason jar white. Once dry, spray the middle portion of the jar with the orange spray paint. Finally, spray the bottom of the jar yellow. Repeat on the next two jars. Accent with assorted black dyed flowers.

2. Blinged-Out Pumpkin

What you need:

  • Black spray paint
  • One pumpkin
  • Assorted craft jewels

Trade in the traditional jack-o’-lantern for this glamorous alternative. Simply spray-paint a pumpkin black (or buy a black plastic pumpkin) and add your favorite “bling” for some pizzazz.

3. Boo Jars

What you need:

  • Mini Mason jars
  • Candy corn (or other Halloween candy)
  • Ribbon
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Cardboard letters

Give your roommates a treat (not a trick!) with this cute Halloween favor. Simply fill your mini Mason jars with your favorite Halloween candy and replace the lid with fall-themed scrapbook paper. Accent with orange and black ribbons and cardboard letters that spell out the word “BOO.”

4. Halloween Wine Bottles

What you need:

  • Empty wine bottles (or other assorted glass bottles)
  • Various colors of spray paint
  • Painter’s tape
  • Sharpie marker
  • Mod Podge
  • Black glitter

Start by removing all labels and residue from your bottles. Then, depending on the type of design you want, tape off part of your bottle using painter’s tape. Spray with the color of your choice over the taped-off area. Once dried, remove the tape and decorate with black Sharpie. If desired, add black glitter by mixing it with Mod Podge and painting over the black Sharpie.

5. Halloween Milk Jug Ghosts

What you need:

  • Empty milk jugs
  • Sharpie markers
  • X-Acto knife
  • Mini lights

Light up your hall or living room with these easy-to-make Halloween lanterns. Start by cleaning out the milk jugs and decorating them with spooky faces using a black Sharpie. On the opposite side of the face, cut a small flap (about two inches wide and two inches tall) and string lights through the opening, adding five to seven lights to each jug.

6. Pumpkin Paper Lanterns

What you need:

  • Orange paper lantern
  • Green paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Green and brown pipe cleaners
  • Wire frame

Using the green paper and pipe cleaners, create a leaf and tendrils. Attach the leaf and tendrils to the paper lantern by winding the ends of the pipe cleaner around the wire frame. Create a stem by rolling a few sheets of the green paper together into a tapered shape. Attach the stem to the lantern using glue. Secure by wrapping another pipe cleaner around the base of the stem and securing it to the wire frame.

7. Monogram Pumpkins

What you need:

  • Monogram template
  • Pushpin or needle
  • Pen
  • Linoleum cutter
  • Keyhole saw
  • Candle

Cut a hole in the pumpkin’s base and hollow the pumpkin out. Tape the monogram template to the pumpkin using masking tape. Using pushpins, poke holes to create an outline of the letters. Use these dots as a stencil to carve out the letter, leaving about half the thickness of the translucent flesh of the pumpkin to allow light to show through. Light a candle inside and watch your pumpkin glow!

8. Chevron Pumpkins

What you need:

  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Spray paint (any color)

Using masking tape and scissors, tape a chevron design around the pumpkin. Spray-paint the pumpkin using any color spray paint. Let dry, remove the tape and voilà: a cute and classy Halloween decoration.

9. Burlap Ghost Lights

What you need:

  • Globe string lights
  • Burlap fabric scraps
  • Twill string
  • Sharpie marker

Add some Halloween spirit to your everyday string light décor by wrapping burlap around the globe bulbs. Tie the burlap pieces at the bottom of each globe bulb using twill string and let the remaining fabric hang. Add a ghostly effect by drawing two eyes on each bulb with the Sharpie marker.

Now you just have to grab your DIY box full of Mason jars and spray paint and get crafting! Before you know it, your living space will be covered with just the right amount of Halloween decorations.

10 Apps Guaranteed to Help You Save Money

For college students, checking your bank account balance typically brings on one of two possible reactions: sheer, unadulterated joy (because it’s pay day) or just plain sadness and disappointment (because your bank account has yet to magically recover from the $100 you just dropped on new shoes).

Learning to manage your own money is one of the ultimate exercises in understanding that ancient proverb: “with great power comes great responsibility.” Wait—that actually might be from Spider-Man, but that’s beside the point. Whatever the case, for us collegiettes that great power is our credit card, and the great responsibility is, well, using it wisely. These 10 apps will help you spend smarter, rather than scratching your head and wondering where the heck all your hard-earned cash is going.

1. Mint

Mint is one of the most popular personal finance apps out there, and for good reason. “It is a really resourceful app that allows you to set your own budgets and track your spending,” says Malone Ryan, a junior at John Carroll University. “It's really cool because you can specify what a certain budget is going to be used for—like groceries or rent!”

Mint easily and safely connects to your bank account and is simple and user-friendly, which is perfect for college students learning to manage their own funds for the first time. At the beginning of the month, you can allocate a certain amount of money for each of your anticipated expenses, and you can also set certain financial goals, like saving up for a car. The app will notify you when you’re approaching your budget limit!

2. RetailMeNot

RetailMeNot is a must for any fashion-forward collegiette on a budget. “I use it whenever I go online shopping,” says Janine Eduljee, a junior at Northeastern University. RetailMeNot finds (and verifies the authenticity of) coupons from over 50,000 stores, including Macy’s, Forever 21 and American Eagle, among others. “I use it whenever I go online shopping,” adds Eduljee.

Rather than spending time scouring the internet to see which of your favorite stores is having a sale, RetailMeNot brings the sales to you! It can even tell you the average discount RetailMeNot users get from a particular store. And it’s not just for clothes, either—with coupons available for places like BestBuy, Ticketmaster and even Olive Garden, you can save on just about anything.

3. ShopSavvy

ShopSavvy is the quintessential app for finding savings on, well, just about anything. You can search by brand, specific product or category, and this app will tell you exactly where you can buy whatever it is you’re looking for. It also compares prices between stores offering the same products, so you can be sure you’re getting the best deal, and the app can also alert you to sales and discounts on various products. If you’re looking to download just one app to help you save, this one is probably it.

4. Poshmark

Poshmark is basically the world’s biggest (online) clothing swap. Whether you’re looking to make a few bucks selling clothes you no longer wear, or trying to score some new stuff on the cheap, Poshmark is the place for you. It’s sort of like the eBay of fashion.

Create an account, and you can put together a "closet" filled with clothes and accessories you want to sell; you can price items however you'd like. The app takes 20 percent of what you sell (which is much less than what a standard consignment store would take!), and the rest is yours to either deposit into your bank account, or to use to shop the thousands of other closets in the app. You can search by item type or by brand—there are tons of designer labels available on this app! Though most things are gently used, you’ll be getting them at a steep discount that won’t leave you feeling too guilty about the new Michael Kors bag you just suddenly realized you can’t live without.

5. BIGWORDS

“Don’t buy your textbooks from the campus bookstore!” is one of the first pieces of advice we hear when we start college, and it’s also one of the truest—we all know that the prices bookstores charge are borderline criminal. Even though sites like Amazon are often reliable in getting us a good deal, there might be an even better one out there.

BIGWORDS allows you to enter the title, author or ISBN number of a textbook and then searches the internet for the best possible deal—it even takes sales and shipping costs into consideration.

6. Campus Special/Eat Street

Created by the textbook seller Chegg and powered by the site EatStreet, this app allows you to enter your address to search for the nearest takeout and delivery places, depending on what kind of food you’re in the mood for. The app shares information about minimum cost for delivery, price of delivery, estimated delivery time and the best deal you can get at a particular place. It also offers a rewards program—every time you order takeout (which is bound to happen every once in a while) you can earn coupons and discounts for your next order!

7. Viggle

With this app, you can basically get rewarded for watching TV—yeah, you read that right. When you check into Viggle on your mobile device while watching a show, you earn points (1 minute of TV = 1 point) that you can redeem for gift cards or other rewards from brands like Amazon, Starbucks, Best Buy, iTunes and Barnes & Noble. You can earn even more points by playing in-app games or answering trivia questions. But beware, collegiettes—this app is only useful when used to earn rewards for time you would have spent watching TV anyway—don’t let it become an excuse to watch even more than you already do!

8. Level Money

Level Money’s website describes this app as “kind of like a financial GPS.” Sometimes, it can be more helpful to skip budgeting your expenses by category and just figure out how much money you’re able to spend at a given time. You link the app to your bank account, and then it immediately shows you how much you’re able to spend that day, week or month.

If you’re looking for more in-depth info, tapping the amounts can give you a picture of your past spending habits—you’ll be able to see just how much your daily Starbucks runs are adding up every month. If you’re looking for the simplest possible way of keeping track of your money, this one’s for you.

9. Slice

Ever ordered something online one day, only to find out that it’s gone on sale the next? If so, Slice is your new best friend. The app detects when the price of an item you’ve ordered goes down and helps you get a refund. In addition, it allows you to easily track your packages (no more bothering with tracking numbers!) and gives you easy access to receipts, so you won’t have to worry about losing them in case you need to make a return.

10. Onavo

Even the best of us can’t resist using up cellular data when there’s no WiFi available. Using Onavo, you’ll never have to face data overage charges again. Using compression technology, it runs in the background while you use data in order to find ways to save you from going over your limit. It also can give you a full report, broken down week by week, of how much data you’re using in each app.

Once you use these apps to find the best discounts and deals on whatever you’re looking for, you’ll be amazed at how much more money is left in your balance at the end of the month. If you want to know exactly how much you’ve saved, then it’s a good thing you downloaded those personal finance apps to help you find out!

This Empowering Campaign Celebrates Women Who Support Other Women

Pepperdine graduettes Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson take the issue of bullying seriously. That's why, during their last year of college, the two friends decided to launch the Kind campaign, an internationally recognized non-profit dedicated to preventing girl-on-girl crime in schools. Since 2009, these inspiring women have created a global movement, spoken at schools across the country and even been the subject of a documentary. Their latest project is a collection of charms with positive messages for the KEEP Collective—all under $20. These bars (designed to personalize KEEP bracelets) come in gold, silver and rose and gold, and read "Kind" or "You Can Sit With Us"—so cute! We were lucky enough to talk to Paul and Thompson about this collab and their charity. Check out what they had to say!

Her Campus: How did you guys come up with the idea for the Kind Campaign?

Lauren Paul: The whole project came about when my partner Molly Thompson and I were in our senior year at Pepperdine. The inspiration came from personal experience and growing up in a world where no one was dealing with girl on girl crime—no one was tackling the issue. I had just worked on a documentary and was really inspired by that experience and how it shed light on social issues, so that summer going into senior year, I was talking with Molly and we decided to share our own personal experiences on the issue. We started talking and we got really excited about the issue and decided to make a documentary about it called Finding Kind. To get started we shot local interviews in LA and Orange County—we weren't sure how people would open up, but we found that immediately people were dying to share their stories. We realized this could be more than just a film and it became the start of Kind Campaign—we literally Googled "how to start a non-profit" and that's where we started. Soon after, we launched Kind Campaign on a national scale. We started to connect with people through social media and as we took a road trip to shoot the film, we really developed the idea.

HC: What direct impact have you seen your organization make on young girls around the country?

Molly Thompson: We started doing assemblies around the country and we knew this was what we were supposed to be doing—we could tell the impact it had on the girls. It was during a time when suicides were being reported on the news and we were the only program out there in schools and spreading the word. It's been really amazing to be able to be a part of this conversation and to be able to create so much change in girls' lives and be able to be in schools having this conversations with girls during our assembly programs. Lives have been changed, which is a privilege to us—we feel really lucky to be the ones having this conversation and seeing the change that is being created.

HC: What's the most rewarding thing about the work you do?

LP: Watching a girl stand up at an assembly and say she is sorry to another girl and see the girl appreciate the apology. We have witnessed incredible moments and we've watched changes take place both at the assemblies [and on] social media.

MT: With every tour we go on, we see these girls and how we impact them and we feel re-inspired—there is nothing else in the world we'd rather do than be in schools and tell this message. The campaign as a whole is so rewarding but last spring, on our spring tour, we posted a picture with us and all of the girls from the conference. Afterwards we always look to see what the girls are saying in the comment sections and what people are talking about and there was one comment from a girl who said she came to the assembly and when she got there, she was checked out and not paying attention, and immediately once the film turned on she became so connected and realized she wasnt alone and how important all of this was. She also shared that she had been suicidal and came to school that very day crying and was distraught, but that because of the film and the assembly she realized she needed to open up and she talked to a friend and got perspective and that Kind campaign actually saved her life.

HC: What are some difficulties you have faced in developing the campaign?

LP: Our programs needed funding and we were able to raise enough money to provide these assemblies to schools and kids that couldn't previously afford it, like the inner city and other financially compromised communities. But right now we have free programming for a number of schools thanks to partnerships we have like with KEEP Collective—to freely give kindness is pretty cool.

MT: There were many different points in our journey where we had difficult lessons, a lot of roadblocks can come up and I would say one of the main things early on was funding and figuring out how we were going to be able to offer programming and make it affordable for ALL schools. Now we can offer programing free of charge and it changed the way we work—we weren't sure of where funding was coming from so now that we've raised money we can offer the program to those who couldn't afford it.

HC: What made you want to partner with KEEP Collective?

MT: We get excited about possibilities to collaborate, because it gives us the opportunity to raise money for our programs—but we also love sharing this with brands who align with our mission. We loved being able to utilize our "you can sit with us" slogan in the KEEP Collective jewelry—it's exciting for us. There is so much meaning in that slogan and girls get excited about it and were excited that Keep is a brand that is enthusiastic about positive content and putting positive content on their pieces. We are able to help spread our message on a national scale which furthers our message. We have had so much positive feedback about the collaboration.

HC: How can our readers get involved with the Kind Campaign?

MT: There are a number of ways to get involved! Our assemblies take place in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges—so hosting an assembly at your college is a great way to get involved. We also have a volunteer program that we just recently re-vamped, called Kind Ambassadors, which is perfect for college-aged kids. They bring the message to their own communities by hosting their own assemblies and basically reaching out to spread the word, by being a mentor for their very own Kind Club, a 19-week club that brings the program to the schools as well. For more information on how to get involved, check out our website.

7 Inspiring Celebrity Breast Cancer Survivors

Most of us know these amazing celeb women for their singing, acting and more. But there is much more to look up to them for, because each of these women has fought and survived breast cancer. They've used their inspiring experiences with this disease to not only spread awareness, but to teach women the importance of early detection. In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to highlight the inspiring stories of these women in Hollywood and the efforts they've put toward the fight to end breast cancer.

1. Giuliana Rancic

In 2011, when she was 37 years old, our favorite E! News anchor was diagnosed with an early-stage breast cancer. Her doctors made the discovery while she and her husband Bill were trying to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization. She had a double lumpectomy as treatment for the cancer, and she then made the serious decision to undergo a double mastectomy.

In an interview with the Todayshow during which she revealed her diagnosis, Rancic said, "I wasn't prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I'd been told. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong. I think a lot of us think we're invincible. But we have to start putting ourselves on the to-do list. I just want women out there to know if you can just find it early, you'll be okay. I found it early."

2. Robin Roberts

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was diagnosed with an early-stage breast cancer in 2007. She had surgery, went through eight chemotherapy treatments and then underwent 6 1/2 weeks of radiation treatment. She remains cancer-free today!

In 2011, Roberts spoke to Prevention magazine about her battle with breast cancer. "[Being fit] was part of the reason I almost didn't go public with my diagnosis - I was embarrassed," she said. "I felt, 'Oh, I've always talked about exercising. And I got cancer.' And then I realized it's a great example of showing that cancer can hit anyone at any time."

3. Cynthia Nixon

Widely known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, Cynthia Nixon is a survivor of breast cancer as well as an active spokesperson for breast cancer awareness. She was diagnosed in October 2006 during a routine mammogram and underwent surgery and radiation to treat the cancer.

"I go in for my completely routine mammogram, and then I get a call from my gynecologist,"Nixon told Nightline. "And she says, 'Well, I have some - it's not such great news, but here it is, but it's very small and we're just going to get in there and take it right out, right away, and then you'll probably have radiation.' I felt scared ... [but I thought] if it's going to happen, this is the best way for it to happen, that it's found so early and we can just get right on it."

4. Hoda Kotb

This hilarious cohost of Kathie Lee & Hoda on the Today show has been cancer-free since undergoing an mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in 2007. She is now an advocate for breast cancer awareness. Hoda made the decision to keep her battle in the spotlight when she allowed cameras at Today to record her experience with breast cancer, inspiring viewers with her story.

Kotb told Cosmo, "I'm an optimist, so I think everything can be worked out and fixed. But from having cancer, I learned that even if you're even an optimist, sometimes you just have to face the facts that certain things are broken."

Kotb has said, "If you have a friend or family member with breast cancer, try not to look at her with 'sad eyes.' Treat her like you always did; just show a little extra love."

5. Christina Applegate

The beautiful actress known for Anchorman and SamanthaWho? was diagnosed in 2008 with an early-stage breast cancer in one breast. Because it was found early, it wasn't life-threatening. She made the decision to have a double mastectomy and made a full recovery.

Following her mastectomy in 2008, Applegate opened up to Oprah Winfrey. She said, "It doesn't feel the same, and it's hard to carry your purse. I cry at least once a day about it, because it's hard to overlook it when you're standing there in the mirror. When you look down, it's the first thing you see... So you're reminded constantly of this thing - this cancer that you had. [But] I have taken a very progressive stance in the rest of my life. For that, I'm really grateful. I am a 36-year-old person with breast cancer, and not many people know that that happens to women my age or women in their 20s. This is my opportunity now to go out and fight as hard as I can for early detection."

6. Wanda Sykes

Hilarious comedienne Wanda Sykes was getting a breast reduction when her doctor came across breast cancer in her pathology. She was lucky to find it early enough, and Wanda's doctor gave her the choice of getting regular checkups or having surgery to remove it. Because she had a family history of breast cancer, Wanda decided to have a bilateral mastectomy, and she is now cancer-free.

Wanda went on Ellen to announce her battle with breast cancer. In the interview, she shared, “I have a lot of breast cancer history on my mother's side of the family, which I didn’t know about. That’s important. Talk to your family. It’s not a secret; it’s not anything that you should hide. If you have it, let your family know so they know what to look out for. [I made the decision] to have a bilateral mastectomy. I had both breasts removed, because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer. It sounds scary up front, but what do you want? Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it’s too late?"

7. Sheryl Crow

"Soak Up The Sun" singer Sheryl Crow was diagnosed in 2006 with breast cancer. She had a successful lumpectomy to treat it, followed by radiation therapy. Sheryl is now cancer-free and an advocate for breast cancer awareness.

Crow was on the cover of Bloomingdale's Pink Book in 2011, part of the store's campaign to raise breast cancer awareness in October. She shared in the interview, "Someone like me shouldn't be diagnosed with breast cancer, that's what was going through my mind. I wasn't thinking about a diagnosis. I was just doing what I was supposed to do, which was staying on top of my mammograms. It was a shock."She said to ABC, "People go through challenging moments of losing people and of having their life threatened from illness and real grief. But they get through it. And that's the testament to the human spirit ... we are fragile, but we are also divine."

This October, help support those affected by breast cancer. Visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation's website for more information.
