Sochi Scoop: 10 Hilarious Tweets from Journalists in Sochi
Athletes, journalists and spectators have been moving into Sochi, Russia, over the past few days. What they've come to find, however, is that Olympic Park and its surrounding areas aren't as ready for the Games as they should be. With more than $50 billion spent on this year's Winter Olympics, journalists covering the Games might expect their hotels' furnishings to be secure or their sink water to be safe. Unfortunatley, that's not the case.
To our amusement, some journalists who are already in Sochi have taken to social media to share their Olympic mishaps and misfortunes. Over the past few days, they've been keeping the Twittersphere updated on their distresses and woes.
While it may seem a little unorganized right now, let's hope that Sochi can pull it together in time for an amazing opening ceremony on February 7! In the meantime, check out these hilarious tweets from some not-so-lucky Sochi visitors.
1. Um, a little unsettling, no?
My hotel has no water. If restored, the front desk says, "do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous."#Sochi2014

2. No, no, no, no.
Water restored, sorta. On the bright side, I now know what very dangerous face water looks like. #Sochi#unfilteredpic.twitter.com/sQWM0vYtyz

3. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
Also on the bright side: I just washed my face with Evian, like I'm a Kardashian or something.

Yet in the end, it's important to look on the bright side.
Folks, lot of people complaining way too much about #Sochi . It has been gorgeous with some glitches, but none more than in small town USA

5 Ways To Get a Valentine's Day Date
Is there anything more frustrating than knowing who you’d like your Valentine to be but not knowing how to snag the date? No matter how many hints you drop, some guys can remain totally clueless. This year, instead of imagining what it would be like if you were out celebrating with your crush, take matters into your hands. Here are 5 ways to do it.
Get a Group Together
Let’s face it — unless you’re in a relationship, Valentine’s Day probably isn’t your favorite holiday. Organize a casual party the weekend before the big day (the holiday falls on a Friday this year). Invite some of your single friends over for chocolate, champagne and pink drinks, and candy hearts — you know, the things about Valentine’s Day that everyone enjoys. This is a great option if you don’t know your crush that well since it feels so casual.
Once you’re at the party, use Lauren from University of Florida’s tip and see what his plans are for the big day. “I always find it easier to talk in a party environment,” says Lauren, who met her current boyfriend after chatting him up at a V-Day party three years ago. “You’re more comfortable around your friends. Ask him what his plans are and if he’d like to hang out on Valentine’s Day. If he says he can’t, you’re around enough people that it’s not awkward.” And around enough chocolate that you won’t even be a bit bummed.
Double Up
Is your crush’s fraternity brother one of your good friends? Or maybe his best bro is dating your roommate? A double date is always fun, especially if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day option that doesn’t feel super serious. Ask your friend if she can suggest a double date to her boyfriend.
Give Him An Offer He Can’t Refuse
This option is perfect if the object of your affection is someone you know really well, like a guy you’ve been seeing casually or your best guy friend who you’ve been crushing on. Purchase tickets to see a band he likes or get a Groupon for a restaurant you know he’s been dying to try (make sure it’s valid on V-Day though as some Groupons exclude this day!). It’s a thoughtful approach, but still way more casual than suggesting a candlelit dinner at a five star restaurant. Kelsey, a senior at Skidmore, purchased two tickets to see Regina Spektor and invited her then-crush to go with her. “Honestly, he was probably more excited for the concert than hanging out with me when I first asked,” said Kelsey. “But we had such an amazing time together and a concert is a pretty romantic environment. It’s a fun first date.”
Currently Seeking: One Cute Crush
Okay, so you know that you want a date on Valentine’s Day, but you don’t know exactly who. How do you go about meeting a cute guy before February 14? A lot of date parties or couples-only parties take place the weekend of Valentine’s Day, so ask your guy friends if they know someone in need of a date. Sure, it’s a risk to go on a blind date, but even if you don’t hit it off romantically with the guy, you can have fun getting dressed up and celebrating the holiday. Diane, a sophomore at University of San Diego, met her current boyfriend when, at the last minute, her friend’s frat brother was out of a date. “I thought it would just be a fun group thing, but we wound up hitting it off,” says Diane. “If I hadn’t offered to be his date, he wouldn’t have been able to go to the party and we never would have met. Guys are looking for dates too!”
Um, JUST ASK
Former Her Campus’s Real Live College Guy Ryan admitted that there’s no super secret trick to snagging a date by Valentine’s Day. “To be honest, if a girl asks me out in any way, shape or form for V-day, I'll be inclined to say ‘no doubt’ and accept,” said Ryan. However, this doesn’t mean you can go up to that hot guy who you have literally never spoken to before and ask him out on a date. Ryan clarified by saying, “This is also assuming that a) we've been flirting and b) we're attracted to each other. With that perfect scenario in mind, I'd really just say that we don't need to be asked out creatively. Last time I checked it's not senior prom.” If you’ve been talking to a guy, don’t be afraid to say, ‘Would you want to get dinner on Tuesday?’
Ask The Girl Who Knows You Best
When it comes to playing matchmaker there’s no one who can do it better than your BFF. If both you and your best friend are single this year, make a pact to set each other up. Try to go into the situation with an open mind. You might not see yourself hitting it off the guy who lived down the hall from your BFF freshman year, but she knows that you two share the same goofy sense of humor. Trust that your friend knows you best and will set you up with a guy who you are truly compatible with (or can at least have a fun night with).
Maybe in a perfect world, the guy you’ve been eyeing would send two white doves to your dorm room with a letter inviting you to a homemade dinner, but that’s not very likely (or convenient — can you imagine trying to get those doves out of your room? Total disaster.). Instead of waiting for Cupid, grab those arrows yourself and use these tried and true tips to fill up February 14 in your planner.

How to Get the Perfect Red Lip for Valentine's Day
Red lips are a bold statement that, as collegiettes, we don't make on an everyday basis. Valentine's Day is the perfect time to rock a red lip and we're going to show you how to make it perfect!
1. Exfoliate
Exfoliating is important because it will get all of the dry skin and flakes off of your lips so the lipstick has a smooth surface to be applied on. Using a lip scrub, scrub your lips until they're smooth. If you don't have a lip scrub, a toothbrush works just as well by softly rubbing it on your lips. Doing this also makes your lips look plumper, which will make your red lip look even better!
2. Moisturize
After you exfoliate, your lips need to be rehydrated. Your lipstick will be easier to apply on smooth lips, so put on your favorite lip balm.
3. Apply Lip Liner
Outline the shape of your lips and then fill them in with the lip liner. A red lip liner that is close in color to your lipstick is best. Using a red lip liner helps if your lipstick starts to wear off, as the lip liner underneath is the same! A lip liner also makes the application of the lipstick easier.
4. Apply Red Lipstick
Now it's finally time to put the lipstick on! Apply the lipstick evenly and generously across your lips. You can apply it straight from the tube or use a lipbrush for extra control, whichever you prefer.
5. Blot and Powder
This trick will ensure that your lipstick will stay all through your Valentine's Day date. To do this, take a tissue and place it on your lips. Then, using a big powder brush, blot loose translucent powder (or baby powder!) over the tissue that is on your lips. This will lock in the lipstick and keep it flawless all night!
Using these tips, you'll definitely have the perfect pout for Valentine's Day!
Stanford Recruit's Awesome Announcement
National Signing Day is an important day for many high school students, as it's the first day they can officially sign a letter of intent to play at a certain college or university. Wednesday was National Signing Day for schools all across the country, and one particularly cool signing happened to be Solomon Thomas' signing to Stanford.
Thomas is one of America's top football recruits in the nation. He is a defensive end from Coppell, Texas, and he had to pick between three schools: University of Arkansas, Stanford and UCLA. In the end, he chose Stanford. According to BuzzFeed he, "pick[ed] Stanford in the most Stanford way possible."
So how exactly did he do this? Instead of announcing his pick in a conventional way (like putting on your future school's hat), Thomas put a tiny Stanford tree on the table where he was sitting and grabbed a pair of nerdy taped glasses.
NBC sports column College Football Talk states, "The clever theatrics aside, Thomas is a significant get for the Cardinal. A Rivals.com four-star recruit, Thomas is rated as the No. 3 end in the country and the No. 4 player in the talent-rich state of Texas. He’s rated as the No. 37 player at any position in the nation."
We at Her Campus want to wish Thomas and all of the other recruits the best of luck as they get started with their college althletic journeys! What were your favorite moments from National Signing Day?
Lauren Conrad's Favorite Position? It's Not What You Think...
Listen up, collegiettes: Lauren Conrad pushed back against sexism in the media with a kickass response to a bafflingly common question (for women, at least): what’s your favorite position? During a radio interview, the former star of MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills” wasted no time before giving her response: CEO.
LC certainly knows about being her own boss, having left reality TV behind in favor of launching her own clothing line, Paper Crown, and a hugely successful, self-titled website (which we love and check religiously). The California beauty's refreshingly candid response highlights the kind of questions we should be asking young women, and why ambition and business savvy need to be recognized and applauded in women as well as men.
Standing up for your right to be a successful entrepreneur and looking fabulous while doing so? You go, girl.
What Guys Want for Valentine’s Day, as Told by a Guy
Unfortunately, I’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day alone this year, but year in and year out, I see girls rushing to the drugstore at the last minute to pick up some kind of gift for their boyfriends (chocolates, gift cards… I even saw a girl pick up flowers for a guy one time). Year in and year out, I find myself thinking the same thing: do girls really think their guys actually want these things?
I’ll be honest, outside of classroom parties and childhood Valentine’s Day cards, I’ve never actually gotten a Valentine’s Day gift… which is weird, because I’m moderately attractive and at least kind of charming, or so I’ve been told. So what do I know about giving gifts on the most loving day of the year? I know that women often have a hard time finding really great things to get men, and I know what guys would like, so I guess that’s all I really need to know.
So what are some awesome things to get your man-friend this year? Well, that depends on how much you want to spend… and I’m only kind of kidding. Valentine’s Day isn’t Christmas, so I wouldn’t spring for anything too expensive. Besides, he should be getting you the nice things, right?
$5 – $19
Has he been ranting and raving about a recent album lately? CDs and movies are great ideas for gifts. Not only are they things he’ll enjoy watching or listening to, they’re also things you can watch or listen to together. My suggestions?
Option A:Mind over Matter ($13.99): Young the Giant’s second studio album was released on January 21, and if your guy enjoys good music, then it’s a safe bet that he would like this album.
Option B: If he’s not a huge fan of Young the Giant, I might suggest Childish Gambino’s new album, Because the Internet ($9.99).
$20 – $39
If your boyfriend is anything like me, he might be looking for a new set of barware. A decent set of cocktail or beer glasses can run between $20 and $30 at a store like Target. If he’s not a drinker (or isn’t of drinking age), I might suggest a good case for his phone. Be warned, though; phone cases and ties are very similar in that guys can be pretty particular about what they look like. Unless you really know his tastes, don’t take the risk. Or, take the risk anyway and give him a gift receipt just in case.
Option A:Threshold Short Tumblers (Set of Four) ($19.99): I saw these at Target before Christmas and made sure to put them on my wish list. These glasses have super heavy bottoms, and they fit perfectly in your hand, which means they’re perfect for a nice post-work drink. Get these and I guarantee he’ll thank you profusely.
Option B:Carbon Case for iPhone 5/5s ($35): What’s sexier than a nice, black phone case? Maybe your guy is constantly dropping his phone, or maybe you want to rid him of a childish case. Either way, this sleek, hard case is a perfect choice for the modern man.
$40 – $50
We’re already looking forward to spring break, so you should start preparing your guy for the soon-to-come sun. Sunglasses are always a good idea, especially if they’re not $5-bargain-bin ones. If you aren’t feeling sunglasses, maybe you’d consider letting him brew his own beer? Hey, you could even make it a couple’s project and brew it together!
Option A:Tommy Hilfiger Aviator Sunglasses ($46.99): Even during the winter, the sun can be utterly blinding. What better way to save your man from eye damage than getting him a super nice pair of classic aviators for Valentine’s Day? All the better to see you with, after all.
Option B:Chocolate Maple Porter Beer Making Kit ($40): What do people get for Valentine’s Day? Chocolate. What do men love? Maple syrup. Take a shot at combining the two and spring for a beer-making kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop. Adult science!
Not everything comes down to monetary value, though. I want to take the time to remind women that we men have feelings as well. Most of us put a fair amount of work into our relationships because we enjoy them, and because we enjoy you. If you can’t afford to buy your guy something, take the time to make something with your own two hands, even if it’s just a silly, crayon-drawn picture. DIY gifts are almost always going to be more appreciated than something you bought him just because you felt like you had to (unless you bought him a PlayStation 4). At the very least, find a way to let him know that you care about him, even if it just means hanging out on the couch with him all day.
You could also bake us cookies, but that’s totally up to you.
