What Your Favorite Disney Princess Says About You

$

0

As young girls, there was probably a time we all dreamed of becoming Disney princesses when we grew up. We had a favorite story, and we watched the VHS (yes, remember that?) over and over again. Now that we’re in college, we actually have a lot in common with our beloved heroines. What does your favorite Disney princess say about you?

1. Snow White

You are generous and trusting, sometimes to a fault. You are gentle and sweet, and you don't like confrontation. You always see the best in people, and you have a soft spot for animals. Your friends would describe you as having a cheerful disposition, because you always know how to make them smile.

2. Cinderella

You’ve endured your fair share of hardships, but you try to always look on the bright side. You are hopeful and a dreamer, but you’re also down-to-earth. You have a creative side, and you can always count on a little help from your friends.

3. Aurora

You are graceful and charming, and you love to sleep. You have a small group of close friends. You may have had a bit of a sheltered childhood, but you are respectful and you carry yourself with elegance.

4. Ariel

You're known as the sassy one in your friend group, but you're also kind and a fierce friend. You can be sarcastic and rebellious, though you know when to be quiet. You love adventure and are curious about the world. Deep down, you're a hopeless romantic.

5. Belle

You love learning, and you're always reading. You are opinionated, strong-willed and independent, but you're also extremely loyal to those you care about. You value your family and friends above all else, and you're willing to make difficult choices in order to protect them.

6. Jasmine

You are feisty and strong, and you’re not afraid to speak your mind. You can sometimes be too stubborn, but it is only because you are so passionate. You love to flirt, you are confident, and you’re great at witty banter.

7. Pocahontas

You see the world in a way that most others do not. You are a free spirit, and you can be mischievous. Your friends come to you for guidance, because they consider you wise beyond your years. You find peace in nature, and you believe it can have a spiritual effect.

8. Mulan

You would do anything for your family. You are awkward and a bit clumsy, but you are a quick learner and you possess grace where it counts. You are strong, brave, determined and bold. People are drawn to you.

9. Tiana

You have big plans and even bigger dreams. You are ambitious, intelligent and resourceful. You take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves. You have talent, but you value hard work above all else.

10. Rapunzel

You are always longing for something more. You believe that there is a great big world out there, just waiting to be explored. You are fun-loving and charismatic, daring and sometimes impulsive. You have a big heart and are easily excited.

11. Merida

You can be a bit of a tomboy. You’re headstrong and outgoing, and you pride yourself on your athletic talents. You have a loud and rebellious nature. You have a big family and you love your siblings.

12. Anna

You tend to act on impulse. You are caring, fearless and funny, and you never give up. You put strong faith in others, but you can definitely fend for yourself. Your relationships are extremely important to you.

13. Elsa

You mean well, but you tend to let your emotions get the best of you. You have a powerful personality, and sometimes you are unaware of the effect you have on others. However, you have learned over time that it is ok to be vulnerable, and to cherish what truly matters.

Live every day like you're a Disney princess, collegiettes.

You Can Now Get Jeans that Charge Your Phone

Stop everything, because you can now buy jeans that will charge your phone. No, this isn’t some elaborate ruse from a 3 a.m. infomercial.

May we introduce you to the #Hello jean from Joe’s Jeans? All you have to do is slide the slim, charged battery into the pocket, connecting it with a power cord. Then, place your iPhone in the secret side pocket and plug it in. For all the doubters who think this setup would make for bulky bottoms, you’ll be glad to hear these bad boys are skinny jeans. They come in four stylish washes and sell for $189—the battery is not included.

It’s a such a simple way to keep your phone from dying that we wish we’d thought of it ourselves. So we’ve rounded up 5 other clothing items we wish would charge our phones!

1. Purse

Wouldn’t it be great if your bag charged your phone while you were in transit?

2. Hat

The larger the hat, the bigger battery, the better the charge. Nobody thought it sounded crazy when Abe Lincoln did it.

3. Jacket

Pockets = the perfect hiding place.

4. Swimsuit

We need our phones at maximum battery power when we’re Instagraming our beach adventures. Of course, we’ll have to figure out how to waterproof our devices first.

5. Bra

Let's be real, our phones spend enough time in our bras to make this a necessity.

Would you buy clothing items to charge your phone with, collegiettes?

How Her Campus Changed My Life

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Broke & Fabulous by Hannah Goldstein, a Her Campus Blogger Network member. Read the full post here—and find out more about how to become a Campus Correspondent for your school!

Unlike most things in life, my experience with Her Campus has exceeded the high hopes I had for it when I first started. I went in knowing the bare minimum about Her Campus: that it is an online magazine for student writers to create and publish original content on. I quickly learned that it's so much more. Her Campus features some of the best student writers I've ever read, writing about everything from goofy zodiac sign articles to serious examinations of mainstream feminism. The content offers something for everyone (whether they be readers or writers), but it doesn't even end there. Her Campus also puts on inspiring and motivational events, such as Her Conference, and provides a space for ambitious high schoolers to get a kickstart on a journalism career. Plus, everything in their store is to die for, and their Instagram account is seriously hilarious.

Her Campus gave me a reason to write again, and the pride I'd forgotten I got upon being published. I had tried to convince myself that writing essays and the occasional journal entry were fulfilling my love of writing, but that was simply not true. There's something much more satisfying in writing about something I was truly interested in, like Beyoncé's involvement with the Ban Bossy campaign, that I'd been missing. There's nothing like being able to write in a fulfilling way in an encouraging and supportive environment.

I also found something in Her Campus that I didn't know I needed until I found it: an amazing group of supportive young women. I'm obsessed with my truly spectacular friends, but my relationships with them are very individually-based. They don't provide me with the group dynamic of being involved in something like Her Campus. I've met some of my favorite people in Her Campus, and I love getting to know them in the group setting of meetings and bonding events.

My involvement in Her Campus has grown to define me. I have gone to every single meeting since joining, and even had the honor of being named one of the Chapter Correspondents when the two wonderful women who started the chapter graduated this winter. It's been just over a year since I joined the Her Campus team, and, in many ways, not much has changed since I joined. At the same time, though, so much has changed because I decided to write for Her Campus, and I couldn't be happier with that.

Read the full post on Broke & Fabulous, and find out how to start a Her Campus chapter at your school!

How to Style Short Hair While You're Growing it Out

Pixie cuts are in, they said. You'll look amazing with a bob, they said. And maybe you did rock that pixie cut, or maybe that bob framed your face perfectly, but whatever the story, it's time for something new, and now you're left to deal with the dreaded growing-out period. What's a girl to do?

First and foremost, we feel your pain. Anytime you try a trend, you risk facing the consequences once you're sick of it, and some changes take longer than others—growing out your hair being one of them. But don't fret! We're here to hold your hand as you transition from pixie to bob and bob to lob—all you need is some creativity and an open mind. With these tips, your shift will be as seamless as possible, we promise.

Slick back your strands

The easiest way to control those short strands? Slick them back! Tons of celebrities have rocked the slicked back look, from Hayden Panettiere to Alicia Keys, so if you're looking for inspiration, be sure to check out their takes on the 'do. Once you're thoroughly inspired, just grab some gel and go.

Stock up on headbands

If you aren't a fan of gel, hair accessories can also achieve a clean, tamed look to uneven strands. We love the idea of trying out a baby bun and hiding all of the strands that can't reach by tucking them into a wide headband. So creative and totally sneaky!

Modify your up-do

Thought you couldn't follow the trends during the awkward grow-out stage? Think again! Top knots are totally in and definitely doable for short-haired gals. They're the perfect way to pull back strands that aren't at equal length with the rest of your cut, and if you don't have enough hair yet for a full knot, you can opt for a baby ponytail—how adorable! A half-up look will keep hair out of your face, making your transition so much less annoying.

Go braid-crazy

You can achieve anything with patience and some bobby pins. Luckily, short hair that can't make an up-do can still handle some braiding and twisting. And because these sorts of looks are purposely messy, your choppy hair is the perfect template.

Try something textured

Styling can help you achieve a desired length without a cut. For example, if your hair is too long for a normal bob but not yet long enough to pull off the chic lob, bring out your curling iron (or allow your natural waves to flow). The wavier your hair, the shorter it looks, so you can personalize your curl for a length that's just right. Even better, the opposite is also true! If your natural, wavy hair is just too short for a look, straighten it to get that extra inch you need.

Go blunt or go home

It's important to ease into a blunt cut when growing out short hair, because if you maintain layers, they'll add too much volume once your locks get longer. This volume can make hair look poofy, which won't be flattering at chin-length or higher.

Opt for the ombre look

Blunt hair can have a harsh edge that cuts off your face in weird places when growing out. To avoid a boxy shape, try an ombre look! The gradual fade can make those edges look less sharp and more layered, framing your face in ways a single shade can't.

Start with the front

If you're starting from a pixie cut, stylists all seem to agree that growing out the front first while keeping the back trimmed is the best way to transition. Why? A longer front and shorter back is easiest to style. You can let your front go completely natural and gel it into place, giving you a rocker-chic look. Or, you can keep your strands pin-straight and let the front become temporary bangs, which you can side-sweep and tuck behind the ear for a classy style. Finally, a longer front can help you transition into an androgynous, shaggy style that's common on global runways. Who doesn't want to look like they walked off a Vogue cover?

Give in to extensions

Of course, if you can't stand to bear the growing out phase, you don't have to at all. Follow J. Law's lead and get some extensions. They can fill your hair out where it's lacking strands, can even up the cut, and can obviously add length. We recommend starting subtle, adding just enough extensions to appear natural and keeping them short enough that your head doesn't look like it sprouted foot-long strands overnight.

Our last word of advice? Keep tabs on your 'do! No matter what transition style you choose, it's always important to make frequent visits to your hair stylist. Because hair grows fast and reaches different stages quickly, consulting a professional to keep your locks trimmed and monitored will ensure as little awkwardness as possible. After all, it's important to keep your strands looking neat and deliberately styled—if you keep your chin up and act like your hair is exactly how you wanted it, you'll be totally believable and pull any look off.

9 Celebs Who've Worn Leggings in Public (& Looked Good Doing It!)

We’ve heard it time and time again: leggings are not acceptable adult wear. But if that were true, then wouldn’t celebrities stick to that rule? They are our ever-so-reliable street style role models, after all. Seeing as they don’t take that responsibility lightly, we’ve rounded up 9 looks to put this argument to rest. Below, you’ll find celebs who have worn leggings in public and looked good doing it!

1. Gigi Hadid

Gigi has perfected that special mix of casual and put-together chic. We can totally see ourselves wearing this during the first week of classes.

2. Julianne Hough

Leather gives your leggings a style upgrade, as Julianne so flawlessly shows. There’s nothing slouchy about this office-ready ensemble.

3. Kristin Cavallari

Long sweaters and leggings go together like PB&J. Adding the leather tote and booties takes this outfit from the couch to the world outside the four walls of your apartment.

4. Kendall Jenner

You could wear a long tee over your favorite pair of stretchy leggings, but Kendall’s crop top makes them unexpectedly cool. The slivers of skin around her ankles and midsection elevate her look completely.

5. Jessica Alba

When we’re feeling a little snazzier, we have to ditch the solids and go for a printed pair like Jessica’s. Her coordination of the tailored jacket and red hot booties with the colors found in the print clearly display her style expertise.

6. Lauren Conrad

Why not go full-on sporty the next time you’re headed to the big game? LC’s jersey, ball cap, and sneaks are just right for trying out the one-of-the-guys trend.

7. Cara Delevingne

Note to self: an all-black ensemble that mimics Grease’s Sandy works in any setting. Cara proves that sometimes style can be found in simplicity.

8. Selena Gomez

You won’t find a messy bun and gym bag when Selena’s out in her leggings. And just tying a knot at the waist of her skin-tight top erases any possibility of boredom with this easy-to-copy outfit.

9. Blake Lively

Blake can do no wrong. Granted, this was for a high-fashion photo shoot, but the next time someone tells you leggings look lazy, pull this out for ultimate shock factor.

Which of these celebrity looks is your favorite, collegiettes?

16 Thoughts You Have When Everyone Around You Starts Getting Engaged

You’re scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed and in between the vacation pictures and inspirational quotes, you see the type of announcement most girls dread: Amanda and Kyle are engaged. Before you do anything else, you screenshot the news and text it to all of your friends, obviously. Though you know should be happy for the soon-to-be newlyweds, by the millionth time this happens, you kind of want to crawl up in a tiny ball and cry over a massive glass (maybe bottle) of wine. If you’re single, you can't help but feel a tiny bit jealous, even though you don't want to admit it. If you’re in a relationship, you wonder if and when you and your SO will take that next step. Here are 16 thoughts we all have when another one of our Facebook friends gets engaged.

1. About time… those two have been dating since junior high.

2. I wonder if I’ll be invited to the wedding. I'd better be.

3. OMG look at that ring—it’s gorgeous!

4. How does she look so flawless? She must have known he was going to propose and/or practiced looking good while crying.

5. Did she seriously get a fresh manicure before posting the picture?

6. He proposed on a holiday? How not original.

7. I hope I get proposed to in a cute way.

8. How can I think about getting engaged when I’m not even dating anyone?

9. Time for a glass of wine.

10. Another engagement?! Make it stop.

11. They’ve only known each other for a month. Isn’t that a little too soon for him to pop the question?

12. OMG look at that ring—it’s hideous.

13. Why is everyone getting engaged?

14. Aren’t we still too young for marriage?

15. How did I become the last single girl in my friend group?

16. Whatever, I’m awesome.

There is NOBODY coming between you, your wine and your cat—and that's okay. Keep on being awesome.

8 Signs You've Been Put in the Bro Zone

$

We always hear guys complain about being put in the friend zone, but rarely do we hear about the roles being reversed. Despite the fact that it is not recognized like the friend zone is, it is certainly still there and more common than you'd think. What do we call this similar catagory that some ladies are placed in amongst their male friends? The Bro Zone. Here are eight signs that you might be one of the bros:

1. You don't have to force anything.

If a guy that you are dating or talking to is into basketball and you aren't, there is usually an underlying obligation to at least watch a game with him and give it a try. Bros, however, know that you have absolutely no interest in sports (unless you are a sports junkie, in which case they love talking about sports with you) and don't try and force it on you. Odds are, you are bros because you already have a ton of other things in common, so there is no need to try and force anything else.

2. You can be completely yourself around him.

You don't have to act a certain way like you might around a guy you are dating. Normally you might be expected to watch a chick flick, you suggest an action flick or comedy that everyone will enjoy. Instead of barely taking up any room on the couch, you can sprawl accross and lay back with the bros. And, you've probably (accidentally) belched in front of him once, and neither of you really cared or noticed.

3. You talk about your relationships (or lack thereof) and vice versa.

You are so far in the bro zone, that they talk to you about who they like, who likes them and you tell them all the same. Guys do not always like sharing emotions with their bros, nor do they like sharing them with other girls, but you are a perfectly platonic combination, so they tell you everything. You do the same and entrust them with everything, because they will always give you genuine and solid advice that is from another guy's perspective.

4. You go on late-night food runs together.

Luckily, bros understand something that a lot of men that you date seem to forget: Women eat and love it just as much as they do. You are their go-to for midnight runs to Taco Bell, and they don't judge that you order just as much, if not more than they do. He might tease you once in a while, but you know that he really doesn't mind.

5. You send each other ugly Snapchats.

Normally, you have a certain set of standards for a Snap that is going to a boy. But, he falls right into your ugly Snapchat circle with your roommate and sibling. You might tone it down a notch or two from the ones you send your best friend, but you no longer let down your hair and look for good lighting. This shows what a deep level of trust you have in one another, because if he screenshots just one of those snaps, he will never let you live it down.

6. You crash on each other's couches (and it isn't weird).

It is assumed that if he or his roommates/neighbors are throwing a party, that you get all access to their couch for the night. In case you didn't know, most guys don't sleep in the same bed during sleepovers, they usual crash on the couch or even on the floor. So naturally because you are one of the bros, it totally isn't weird, and the post-party group breakfast outings the next morning are the best. Plus, if you and your roommate get into a fight, he is always there and the door is always open.

7. You call them by their nickname.

They have a nickname that their bros call them, and obviously that includes you because you are totally a bro. You've accidently called them by their first name once or twice, and it was just weird and uncomfortable. You might even have a nickname, too, or be on the ultimate bro level: they call you by your last name.

8. You tease each other all the time.

You constantly tease each other about anything and everything, and because you two are bros and therefore totally platonic, nothing is off the table and neither one of you has a filter. Although there might be a lot of taunting, it is all done out of love, of course.

It is not always a bad thing to be put in the bro zone. If you are a bro, then that means that they trust you, respect you and feel comfortable around you. You never know, the bro zone (and the friend zone) are never permanent, if you do ever want to get out. But for now, own your status and be the best bro you can be.

How to Have Your Best Semester Yet

$
0
0

You made your Target runs, put the finishing touches on your DIY picture collages and made it through the first days of classes – in other words, your semester is off and running (fast!). The school year is in full swing, and this year you’re determined to have an even better time than last year. It’s not that last year wasn’t totally awesome (because it was), but this year? This is your year.

To make the fall semester more incredible than you ever even thought possible, you don’t have to rent expensive party buses to get to frat formals or bust your butt at the library every single night to score that much-deserved A. Sure, a few of those things here and there are swell, but having an amazing time this fall can be the result of much simpler decisions. Wondering what we mean? Here’s your answer: the best tips for making this semester fantastic (without having to go overboard). We’re talking making the most of every moment, killin’ your classes and making more friends along the way!

1. Decide what really matters

One of the best ways to de-stress your life is to edit your closet. This means keeping the items that you really love and donating the items that are, well, just taking up space on your hangers. This mentality doesn’t only apply to your inherited cashmere sweaters or your favorite riding boots; Committing only to activities, classes and friends you seriously can’t live without will de-stress your life, too.

Did you take a leadership position last semester more out of obligation than a true passion for the role? Then let it go! Wandering through a minor that you’re realizing you don’t have much time for or interest in? Then why are you still doing it? College is one of the few times in your life where you get to focus (mostly) on the things that you want to do. Edit your school life like you’d edit a closet: If you aren’t obsessed with your major or extracurricular activities, then let ‘em go. You’ll give yourself extra time to pursue what’s really important to you, which will, in turn, make you a happier camper. Or poli sci major. Or drum captain.

2. Chill, dude

We get it; you’ve got a lot going on. Running from classes to club meetings to study sessions is just a day in the life for a college gal, but don’t forget that at some point you’re going to have to let off some steam! Scheduling time for constructive relaxation during your week is the key to staying sane when all you can think about is when the heck you’re going to finish that lab write-up.

What exactly do we suggest? Try scraping together an hour for a daily workout (one of the best stress busters out there – and as a bonus, your six pack will start showing!). If breaking a sweat doesn’t suit your fancy, put together an awesome, calming playlist and listen to it while you take a long shower or when you walk to class. It’ll put you in a good state of mind for taking on your classes and other activities!

3. Channel your inner Jim Carrey

We’re talking about Jim Carrey in the admittedly mediocre 2008 movie Yes Man. Though the film itself wasn’t exactly an Oscar-worthy smash, the plot made a point that we’d like to reiterate: Say “yes” to something new! Whether it’s joining a new club, hanging out with a cutie from American lit whom you’re 50/50 on or taking a spontaneous weekend trip, saying “yes” to something you’re not totally sold on can end up being one of your favorite experiences of the year!

Making the most of opportunities you’re given can totally change your college experience. So, the next time your roomies suggest a trip to the beach or the quiet cutie from chem strikes up the courage to ask you out for coffee, say, “Why not?” and get ready for some unexpected fun!

4. Get outta here

As much fun as it is to hang out on campus, sometimes you’ve gotta get out of the university bubble to experience the real world. If your college town has lots to do off campus, take advantage of the awesome shopping, restaurants or museums at your fingertips.

For collegiettes whose schools are a far cry from “urban,” take a Saturday to go hiking, camping or apple picking this fall! Simply getting out of your routine can do wonders for a tired student. Sometimes all you need is a breath of fresh air (literally!).

If you’re super ambitious, you could even consider taking an off-campus internship! Visit your school’s career center and ask which companies in the area are hiring – bonus points if you find a gig that’s paid. Interacting with adults in the workforce will not only help you prepare for post-collegiette life (gasp!), but also give you the chance to collaborate with people who aren’t in your comparative politics course.

“I took a part-time internship near campus during the spring of my junior year,” says Sarah, a senior at the University of Minnesota. “I loved it because it gave me a chance to get off campus and spend some time in downtown Minneapolis during the week. It was only about 10 hours a week, but was just enough to give me a change of scenery and some work experience.”

5. Take astrophysics...

…If you’re a music major. If you’re usually slaving away in chem lab, pick up a theater course. Use the extra slots in your schedule to take a class in a subject you know literally nothing about. Religion, philosophy, sports management… the possibilities are endless.

Sure, college is a time to figure out what you want to pursue as a career, but it’s also a time to experience new things! When’s the next time you’ll have a chance to take music theory from a world-class musician or biology from a highly regarded scientist? That’s right – probably never. Maybe you’ll realize that you’ve fallen absolutely in love with a subject you’d never even considered.

6. Make an older friend (like, wayyy older)

After you’ve established a solid friend group consisting of roommates, classmates and intramural teammates, there’s one last group to conquer: your professors. College professors are a school’s greatest assets, and they’re there to teach and mentor Y-O-U! Teachers are vaults of knowledge. They’re experts in their respective fields, they have years of experience to draw from and they’re, like, networking gold! Not only do they know tons of people in the career field you want to end up in, but they’ll likely be more than happy to connect you with friends or former colleagues who can help you get a job after graduation.

Making connections with your professors will only make your college experience easier and more enjoyable. They are the ones putting your grades in the books, after all! By making sure your Psych 101 lecturer knows your name, the chances it’ll have an “A” next to it by the time finals come around will increase.

7. Learn your school’s fight song

You know those kids in the front row of football games who paint their chests and make it on ESPN? We’re willing to bet that those mega-fans know every bleeping word to their school’s fight song. We’re also willing to bet (some of us from experience) that they’re having a blast! Having school spirit is an awesome way to get involved on campus, make friends and enjoy your college days.

Does that mean you need to strip down to your skivvies in 20-degree weather and paint up to cheer on your football team? Well, if you want to, we won’t hold you back! For you gals who don’t have an undying love of the cold, there are plenty of other ways to show your love for your school. Attending a music or theatrical performance or a debate match to support your fellow classmates are all totally legit ways to show your school spirit. Just don’t start the wave in the middle of Hamlet.

You’re on your way to having the best semester of your life, girl! Just remember to follow your heart and do what feels right for you. After all, who knows you better than yourself?

It's no secret that Jennifer Lawrence shares our love for reality TV, and that the Kardashians have a special place in her heart. But as we learned last night, J.Law takes keeping up with the Kardashians a lot more seriously than we could have imagined.

J.Law, who celebrated her birthday earlier this month, naturally invited the Kardashians to her b-day bash. While we have yet to see that album of selfies that is bound to have happened (well, if Kim showed up, that is), Kris Jenner has gifted us with the greatest photo ever:

Kris's caption has us DYING to know what made the night so memorable, and what exactly it was they were caught doing. Our guess? Jen probably left her own party, because she was feeling like:

And we all know leaving the party early runs in the Kardashian's genes:

Whatever was happening here, it makes sense that the momager extraordinaire and literally everybody's BFF were hanging out. Could they possibly be the new #FriendshipGoals?

How to Nail Winged Eyeliner Once & For All

$
0
0

Like red lipstick, winged eyeliner—also known as the cat eye—is a classic look in the makeup world. It’s simple, chic and adds just the right amount of glamour without being too much. However, without knowing the proper techniques, the task of drawing a cat eye (and applying eyeliner in general) can be a bit difficult for those of us who happen to lack a steady hand. If you've sacrificed a great deal of liquid eyeliner tubes and an even greater number of cotton swabs and tissues in attempts to nail the elusive cat eye look, you're not alone. That's exactly why we’re here to help, thanks to a few hassle- and mistake-free tips that will help you create the fiercest winged look imaginable.

Choose a reliable eyeliner

First, the key to a great set of cat eyes comes down to the eyeliner. While we know that liquid, gel and cream eyeliners can be intimidating to think about, learning how to use them are stepping stones to helping you master the technique.

If you’re having trouble with the idea of switching from a pencil straight to liquid, start off with a felt tip liquid eyeliner like the Milani Eye Tech Perfection Liquid Eyeliner ($8.49). The tube has an unusual, curvy shape, but that’s actually the beauty of it. The L-shaped tool is designed to fit perfectly into your hand, making you feel like you have more control over the eyeliner itself and the way you apply it.

And if you feel more comfortable using a gel or cream eyeliner, just make sure you have an angled eyeliner brush on hand. We recommend using something inexpensive and easy for beginners to adjust to, like Wet N Wild's Mega Eyes Crème Eyeliner ($3.99). Not only is this liner totally affordable, it also lasts all day so you won’t have to worry about smudging! Better yet, this eyeliner can be found at any drugstore.

Find your shape

Ultimately, the shape of your wing is all up to you, but paying attention to your eye shape can help if you can't decide. Some prefer a triangular-shaped wing, while others are more comfortable wearing a curvy wing, shaped a bit like a J. Curvy wings work better for those with smaller eyes, as the curve works to elongate your lash line and make your eyes appear bigger. If you have bigger eyes, opt for a triangular shape instead.

Of course, keep in mind that these rules aren't at all mandatory. These suggestions are simply intended to get you started—only you'll know the shape you love to rock most!

Make sure both angles are even

There's nothing worse than having two wings pointed at completely different angles. To make sure that this doesn't happen to you, try holding any makeup brush up to your face and pointing it toward the edge of your eyebrow. Once you find the angle, gently draw a thin penciled line in place of the brush to serve as a guideline. Then, trace over the line with your liquid or gel liner and you're good to go!

Don't be afraid to cheat a little

A good way to get started with a nicely shaped wing is to simply use tape. The tape method is a total game-changer, thanks to its beginner-friendly ease. All you have to do is take a piece of Scotch tape and place it underneath your lower lash line, making sure the tape is angled toward your temple. Angling the tape in the right direction is especially important, since this is the direction that your wing will follow once you begin to draw it, and how high you want your angle to be is all up to you. Start drawing a line from the inner corner of your eye all the way to the outer corner using short strokes. Then, begin to extend the line to the tape, making sure it begins to thin out as you create more of a wing. The great thing about using tape is that even if you mess up and extend your line too far, any eyeliner that bleeds onto the tape can be removed. When you’re done creating your line, just peel off the tape and you’ll be all set! And for a full tutorial, try this guide.

Get geometric

Creating a wing doesn't have to be as hard as it's made out to be—just use the triangle method! It's exactly what it sounds like: drawing a triangle at the edge of your eyelid. You can start off by applying eyeliner how you normally would if you weren’t attempting to create a wing. Then, draw a triangular shape at the edge of your eyelid, with the tip of the triangle pointing toward the edge of your eyebrow. Once you complete the shape, fill in the gap. If you really want to get creative, you can even fill in your gap with an eyeliner or eyeshadow of a different color. Either way, your wing should look pretty fierce. And if you’re more of a visual learner, you can use this tutorial for reference.

Don't pull your eyes back

You may think you're doing yourself a favor by holding your eyelids as you attempt to draw, but holding your skin actually creates weird lines, making you think that you're drawing your wing the right way when you aren't! Resist the urge and keep your hands away from those lids until you're finished—we promise it's worth the mistake-free finish!

Clean up your mistakes

Creating an uneven line happens to the best of us. If you find that one wing is a little uneven or one line is thicker than the other, don't panic—you don't have to redo your eyes entirely! Make sure you have a few Q-tips on hand to quickly clean up any mistakes you might make. All you have to do is take a Q-tip and dip it into some makeup remover to gently clean up around your eyes, or dab on a little foundation to even out the look.

So if you're like most of us and tend to struggle with getting those wings even, try adding some of these techniques to your daily makeup routine and see which one works best for you. Good luck, collegiettes!

Target is Giving Us Another Reason to Spend More Time There

We already know how dangerous a shopping trip to Target can be. You go in needing toothpaste, and leave with tons of school supplies you never needed, enough new home decor to furnish a new apartment, kitchen gadgets you probably won't actually use, and most of the stuff in the dollar section. After a shopping trip like that, it's no wonder you're always hungry enough for a stop by Target's in-store cafe, where you'll find pizza, hot dogs, nachos and the like...

Until now. Starting this October, Target is replacing those unhealthy fast food options with pressed juices, kale and edamame salads and more. While Pizza Hut will remain (so you can breathe a sigh of relief), the chain will begin serving "artisan" styles including margherita and barbeque chicken. If you're already starting to save up for a trip to Target later this fall, pause for a moment—the new food options are being introduced to a few key markets across 14 stores to begin with. Here's to hoping these customers love their beet and carrot juices and kale salads, because we're thinking these choices sound like the perfect way to top off a weekend trip to Target.

Her Campus has truly shaped my college career thus far and has opened a lot of doors for me as a student, blogger and woman. It's something I have been heavily involved in throughout my college experience, and something I genuinely love being a part of. Members of the Her Campus network have moved on to jobs and internships at SeventeenHarper's BazaarVogue and Vanity Fair, just to name a few!

Her Campus chapters serve as a section on HerCampus.com devoted to each school, so students can have an individualized experience on the website through the five main sections: Features, Blogs, Campus Celebrities, Campus Cuties and Snapshot.

I found out about Her Campus the summer before starting my freshman year of college, and the rest is history!

I was immediately intrigued and made it a point to find out more info about Her Campus, so I went ahead and applied to become a member of my chapter. Over the past two years, I have become more and more involved with Her Campus, not just within my chapter but within the company as a whole, speaking on panels at the Her Conference: High School in 2014 and 2015, attending 2014 and 2015 Boston College Fashion Week events, attending the 2014 and 2015 Her Conferences, held in New York City, and most recently and what I’m most proud of, becoming a Campus Correspondent of the Emerson College Chapter and being a summer intern at their Boston office.

While I didn't begin the Her Campus chapter at Emerson, starting your own chapter is a great way to gain writing experience, participate in marketing campaigns and make network connections with other college journalists online and in person at the annual Her Conference each summer. If there's already a chapter at your school, what are you waiting for? It's time to get involved!

It doesn’t matter if we’re primping, polishing or plucking, we all constantly face beauty struggles in the pursuit of looking ***flawless. Here are 11 annoying things we deal with every day for the sake of beauty.

Just counting the days until those locks grow out...

4. Running mascara

Goodbye flawless lashes, hello raccoon eyes!

5. Frizz

Some things just can’t be tamed.

6. Streaky, orange self-tanner

We went from Casper to Snooki with one bottle of lotion.

7. Cutting ourselves shaving

And being convinced we’re bleeding out.

8. Bikini waxes

Ouch. Just ouch.

9. Eyebrow plucking

There’s a fine line (as in, ONE hair) between perfectly shaped and way over-arched.

10. Failing at doing a cat eye

There goes 20 minutes and a whole bottle of makeup remover.

11.  Getting burned by our straightener/curling iron

Who decided holding a hot piece of metal next to our heads was a good idea?!

Her Story: I Was Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in My 20s

On January 30, 2013, I flew to Miami to celebrate my 28th birthday. Upon waking up the morning after my arrival, I noticed a large bloodstain all down my nightshirt, all over my bed sheets and down my left arm. I looked everywhere on my body to find a scab or even a clot, but I couldn’t find anything.

Since I was on vacation and didn’t want to put myself into a panic, I decided it must have been a nosebleed. For months after, I continuously kept seeing small blood stains on my shirts or bras, but when I looked for a cut or a scab I still couldn’t find a source.

Then on the morning of April 20, I woke up with a feeling that something wasn’t right in my body. I felt fatigued and I had no appetite. I decided the only way to feel better was to take a hot shower and soak up the steam. After standing in the shower for nearly ten minutes I looked down and saw that blood was streaming from my right breast nipple. The bleeding wouldn’t stop, and I was so terrified that I thought I was going to have an anxiety attack. As my mind kept racing, I kept asking myself, “How didn’t I catch this sooner?!” At the same time, a part of me was relieved to find the source after all these weeks of finding blood on my shirts.

Immediately, my boyfriend rushed me to the emergency room, where they ran many blood tests, including on the blood from my breast. They couldn’t find any abnormalities. The next day I saw a breast specialist, and after a negative mammogram and ultra sound the doctor assured me it was a benign growth called a papilloma that was causing the bleeding. Nevertheless, she wanted to be certain and on May 8, 2013, I had surgical biopsy of the right breast nipple.

On May 14, 2013, my boyfriend insisted that he come with me to the doctor’s office for my biopsy results. I told him it would be a quick appointment and that he wouldn’t be necessary, but he wanted to come anyway. I was sitting on the table, all smiles, to show the doctor how well my incisions were healing and how I wasn’t bleeding anymore. However, when she walked in, she wasn’t sharing my enthusiasm; in fact, she seemed to feel the opposite. I don’t remember much of that appointment except hearing the four words that had never occurred to me: You have breast cancer.

After nearly fainting, I couldn’t even grasp those words and identify them with myself. To make matters worse, I live in Los Angeles, and my entire family lives in Pennsylvania. My grandmother had just been diagnosed with Stage 4 lymphoma the week before.

I had a million questions going through my head: How?! I’m healthy. I’m young. It doesn’t run in my family. All of my tests were negative and there was no lump! How do I tell my friends?! More importantly how do I tell my family?! Wait… how do I tell my mom?

I looked up from the table into my boyfriend’s eyes. I could tell he was holding back the tears as his eyes became bloodshot and glossy. His face turned grey and then white. It was like a dagger went through him. I reached for his hand, and he sat quietly being my rock as the tears were rolling down my face. Immediately after I left the hospital, I broke down. My life flashed before my eyes, and all I could think about was whether I was going to survive.

I called my aunt Julie, my mother’s oldest sister, who is like a second mother to me. She beat lymphoma in April, and I needed to talk to someone who could relate to me. My mother called me for my results that same day. My heart stopped when the phone rang. She was still digesting the information that her mother had lymphoma, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her that her only child was now fighting breast cancer. I also needed to make sure I had enough information and a plan of action so I could assure her that I would be all right. A few days later I had an MRI, which showed abnormality throughout the entire breast and my doctor told me I had no choice: I had to have a mastectomy. It was then that I called my mom and told her.

In the meantime, I closed my Facebook account and told only five of my closest friends. I assured them I was going to be fine before they had a chance to react because I was too afraid to see their emotions. It was so hard to wake up and go about my day without thinking about my diagnosis. The longer I kept it to myself to try to come to terms on my own, the harder it was for me to bear. I felt so alone and scared. I didn’t know anyone my age who had been through or was going through cancer. I had no one to relate to, and when I searched online, the stories I read were so depressing that they made me feel worse.

On July 7, 2013, my grandmother lost her battle with lymphoma. My doctors had allowed me to fly back to PA the week before to say good-bye. For four days I sat by her side while she was put on hospice. It was the first time in over a month that I didn’t think about my diagnosis. I had to be strong for her and, at the same time, she was being strong for me.  It was very surreal knowing that we both had gotten diagnosed with cancer around the same time. I cherished every moment up until the day I had to tell her good-bye. It was so hard seeing someone I loved so much losing a battle that I was fighting myself. During our last few minutes she told me how brave I was and how she was so proud of me and that she loved me very much. She then gave me her emerald ring that was on her finger and put it on mine. I knew I had to stay strong and fight for my life.

On July 18, 2013, I underwent a unilateral mastectomy with the removal of three lymph nodes. Immediately after the mastectomy, my reconstruction/plastic surgeon reconstructed my breast with an empty expander, which basically looks like an empty implant. My doctor said that if I had waited any longer this tumor would have reached my lymph nodes and I only would have had a few months to live. My life flashed before my eyes again, and I felt like I dodged the biggest bullet of my life. I stayed in the hospital for five days with two drains under my armpits. The pain was excruciating. My boyfriend was able to sleep at the hospital with me, and my mother was able to fly here and stay with me for a month.

One month after my mastectomy, my drains were removed, and I was able to start getting expanded. When you get expanded, the doctor takes a large syringe filled with saline solution and injects the implant with 20-40cc of the solution at a time. This stretched my skin and pectoral muscle, so it took multiple weeks of injections to achieve the size I wanted. On October 22, 2013, I had my first reconstruction surgery to replace the expander with an implant. I had another surgery January 20, 2014 to augment the left breast so it would look symmetrical and to also recreate the nipple of the new right breast. I wish I could say by now I am finished, but this month, I will be undergoing a final reconstruction surgery to finish the symmetry of the left breast.

I’ve had countless doctor visits, blood tests and scans to figure out why this happened and how to be proactive about reoccurrence. My oncologist referred me to a genetics specialist who ran a DNA gene panel of 18 different genes. In August 2014, I completed one round of IVF to freeze my eggs to prepare for my next step of treatment. My next step is still to be determined because of they found an abnormality within one of my genes that could conflict with treatment and cause another type of cancer. In the meantime, I see my oncologists every three months for blood draws, and I get a mammogram and an MRI every 6 months to check for reoccurrence.

After my diagnosis I was advised to take a medical leave from work and to return when I was fully recovered. When I initially met with my doctors I was told each surgery took two to three months to recover and I would be back to work within nine months after my mastectomy. Were they wrong! It’s been a little over a year and I’m still not able to work. I still have multiple doctor appointments a week. I have chronic fatigue and pain in my upper back that makes it hard for me to function.

In the beginning, I tried keeping an active social life, but unfortunately not a lot of my friends could grasp that I couldn’t go out all night or understand how easily I get tired. Most of them compared my mastectomy to a “boob job,” and it was hurtful that they could be so ignorant. It was like I had nothing in common with any of them anymore. While they were telling me about the crazy night they had or their amazing vacation, I was telling them about my “wild” nights in the hospital. I hated seeing their deer-in-the-headlights face and the disconnection in conversations.

I decided to start focusing on myself. I decided I had to teach myself how to live again and find a new normal. Since January, I’ve completely accepted myself for who I am and what I can and cannot do. My health has become my full time job. I lost interest in most of the things I used to find joy in, but I found a new love for other things such as cooking, yoga and meditation.

Even though I will never be the same after my breast cancer diagnosis, I believe in some ways it was a blessing. I learned a lot about myself, and I appreciate my second chance at life. I learned who my real friends are and also gained new amazing friendships with other breast cancer survivors. It’s the quality, not quantity, of friends that matters. Cancer really took a toll on my emotions and my mind. I had to learn to accept what I couldn’t change and focus on the things I could. I learned a lot about wellness and how important it is to be aware of what I put in and on my body and to be aware of any changes.

My cancer may be gone today, but it will always be in the back of my mind that it could come back tomorrow. Knowing that reality, I’m grateful to wake up every day. I live every day to the fullest, and I don’t sweat the small stuff. I cherish the people in my life and have purged the people who were toxic. My relationship with my boyfriend is stronger than ever, and I’m grateful that he’s been by my side through everything. I’m proud of my scars. They remind me everyday that life is tough, but I’m tougher. I’m happier because I learned what matters, and I stand taller because I’m a survivor.

7 Things 'That’s So Raven' Taught Us About Life

$
0
0

If you were a late 1990s baby, you most definitely watched at least one “That’s So Raven” episode on Disney Channel and emulated teen psychic Raven Baxter as she saw into the future, pursued her dream of becoming a fashion designer and maneuvered her way through so many crazy scenarios. Even though the show has gone off and Disney Channel is no longer included in our DVRs, we still have the memories. But with a possible That’s So Raven reunion coming to fruition, it still shows that Raven is and still teaching us about (and predicting) our lives.

1. Most of the time your parents are right.

We always know that our parents mean well, but often times they sound like a broken record telling us what to do and what not to do. However, there are always comes a time when we wished we could have reversed time and done exactly what our parents told us to, like when we unknowingly accept a prince’s marriage proposal. And even though it was embarrassing, Mrs. Baxter was right in the way she interpreted Romeo and Juliet!

2. Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something.

Raven never let anyone tell her she couldn’t do something and usually went through every trick in the book to find some way to do the impossible. This rang especially true when she fought against a racist clothing store manager or modeled her fashion designs on the stage that tried to tell her she didn’t have “the look.”

3. Never be afraid to break out in song.

Even at the worst times, Raven had a moral obligation to herself to dance whenever she heard "her jam," and by doing so, she gave us one of the first versions of twerking ever seen on national television.

4. Health is incredibly important.

With Chelsea being a vegetarian, she and Raven had a few disagreements over what was the right thing to eat and wear, but they teamed up together to stop the fast food company that took over their cafeteria, showing that a five-foot hot dog may not have been the best thing to put in your mouth.

5. When it comes to friends, it’s about quality not quantity.

Raven, Eddie and Chelsea had their ups and downs, but proved that real friends are the ones that can power through the good and bad times and still come out on top. Because only real friends would search an entire ice cream machine for a ring, pretend to be a statue in place of the one that broke, and take care of a goat together.

6. You can always look to your family for support.

Family is complicated, but when things are rough, they will usually be there (sometimes with an “I told you so”) a solution. Even from the younger sibling you call “a little nasty.”

7. Every collegiette needs a catchphrase.

Finally, Raven had a million little catchphrases that always represented the moment she was in and lightened the mood. From “Oh Snap” to “Ya Nasty,” Raven gave us plenty of phrases to use in any situation, especially the ones she predicted herself being in.

Tell us, collegiettes, what did "That’s So Raven" teach you about life?
